COMMUNITY PLAYGROUND PROJECT NEEDS FURTHER £40,000

STOCKBRIDGE AMATEUR DRAMATIC SOCIETY PLAYHOUSE CREATURES Stockbridge Amateur Dramatic Society’s next production will be Playhouse Creatures by April De Angelis. First performed in 1993, this wickedly funny and deeply moving play about the first English actresses has become a modern classic. It is 1669, London. The theatres have reopened after seventeen years of suppression under Cromwell’s puritan government. For the first time in England, female parts are played by women. But it is not easy for this first generation of English actresses. Considered fair game by the gentlemen of the court – including the King – these women, whilst recognising that having a wealthy patron and lover was a potential escape from poverty, they also knew it made them vulnerable to manipulation and abuse.

and Nell Gwyn. The restoration playwright, Thomas Otway, makes an appearance, and Doll Common, a fictional character, provides insight and a sharp wit to the developing dramas around her. The result is a rich mixture of bawdy comedy, heart-rending tragedy and a fascinating insight into the period. Mark Frank, the director, said: “We have a very strong cast and are hugely enjoying the challenge of this extraordinary play with its wonderful inventiveness and theatricality. Although set 350 years ago, the battle for these women to be recognised for their talent and not their sexual availability, continues to this day.” ‘Playhouse Creatures’ is being performed at Stockbridge Town Hall on the 4th, 5th and 6th April.

The play records the precarious lives of four of the most famous of these actresses: Mary Betterton, Elizabeth Farley, Rebecca Marshall

Tickets are available online at www.stockbridgeamdrams.org.uk and from John Robinsons and Garden Inn in Stockbridge and King’s Somborne Post Office.

After a parcel of land was gifted to Lockerley Parish Council it was agreed the ideal use for it would be as a playground for the children of Lockerley and East Dean who currently do not have their own play space. Since then the Lockerley and East Dean Playground Community have been working hard to raise the necessary funds. The good news is that so far they have raised £59,600 through grants, donations and fundraisers with £16,000 just since October (which includes £10,000 from the National Lottery Community Fund, £300 from Waitrose Leckford, and proceeds from the monthly cake sale, a Christmas concert and selling Christmas cards)! However, new quotes for groundworks on the land have come in much higher than expected, and mean even more money is now needed than originally thought – with the groundwork now estimated to cost £50,000 the playground committee will need to raise a further £40,000 to buy the necessary equipment. “Unfortunately the nature of the plot means greater costs for levelling and fencing, which means we aren't quite as close to completion as we had hoped! However, we have raised over £50,000 in the last year and we plan to keep going with the same force and determination so we can hopefully have it ready in 2020!” said Anna Standen. The Lockerley and East Dean Playground Committee will be announcing their fundraising programme for 2019 in April. ROMSEY CHORAL SOCIETY SPRING CONCERT: THE SILVER SWAN

Vinci envisioning the thoughts in his brain as he heard the call of the air, and the challenge to make a machine that would take a human being into mastery of the air.

You don’t have to be an enthusiastic ornithologist to enjoy Romsey Choral Society’s bird-themed concert on Sunday April 7th at 19:30 at the Church of St Cross, Winchester. Birds have inspired composers for centuries with their birdsong, appearance, and for their ability to fly.

Other pieces have been inspired by both familiar and legendary birds. Birds familiar to country dwellers like the sparrow, turtle dove, owl, lark, nightingale and swallow are represented in compositions by Mozart, Vaughan Williams, Elgar, Richard Rodney Bennett and Holst. Birds of status like the swan and the bluebird are commemorated by Gibbons and Villiers Stanford in their respective songs ‘The Silver Swan’ and the evocative ‘The Blue Bird’.

The concert includes wide-ranging musical styles - from the Tudor-Jacobean composer Orlando Gibbons to composers of the twentieth and twenty first centuries. RCS is including a new composition ‘Soul’s Flight’ by their talented musical director Jamie W. Hall, which touches on the potency of song to uplift and unite, and a work by the Grammywinning choral superstar Eric Whitacre. ‘Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine’ is inspired by Renaissance genius Leonardo da

LITERARY DAYS

AT PITTLEWORTH MANOR

W

hat is it about the English country house that fascinates? Beauty? The desire to understand a different life? but most of all, surely, it is stories: extraordinary stories of real country houses and their occupants and the stories that they have inspired. Pemberley, Manderley,Thornfield, Brideshead: these houses are not backdrops but central characters in some of the most famous novels of English literature. When I was six years old, I came to live at Pittleworth Manor, small but ancient, in the heart of the Test Valley. The old house (full of its own stories) shaped much of my reading. I read Jane Eyre and absolutely refused to go up to the attics alone after dark until my teens. I read Alison Uttley’s A Traveller in Time and never quite lost the hope that I might open a door in Pittleworth and be confronted with a scene from the house’s past. And, of course, I learned the thrill and fear of lying in bed at night and hearing the creak that might be a step on the stair. A Manor of Reading, was born from this sense of thrill: the realisation that reading novels about country houses within a country house could set your imagination and your understanding spinning. I wanted to create an immersive reading experience. What can we learn about atmosphere? What aspects of country house life do we tend to overlook in more conventional and academic readings of novels? I read History at Oxford and did graduate work in English literature at King’s, London and the University of Southampton, where I gained my PhD. I had the wonderful experience of teaching undergraduates. (I would have loved to pursue academic life but I am also a farmer and a mother: something had to give). One of the things that was giving was reading time and I missed the excitement of discussion in seminars. I know I am not alone; there are so many of us who love reading, yet have less and less

time to read, let alone discuss books. Was it possible to create a day of literary discussion in which one could learn, laugh and rediscover without setting homework or reading lists? I reckoned it was. So, last November, eleven brave volunteers gathered around my dining room table to test the theory. I thought it might be more realistic for busy bookworms to take one day out, ‘me time’, occasionally, to discuss old favourites and discover a few new books, rather than daily devoting an hour or so they didn’t have to someone else’s reading list. And, because it was ‘me time’, it must feel like a treat. I love conferences and seminars but not coffee tasting like weedkiller, wine simultaneously threatening to bore through tooth enamel and plastic cup, or suspicious-looking sandwiches. It’s hard to get into the frame of mind to discuss gothic fiction under the glare of strip lighting. So literary days at Pittleworth would be based around good books, good food and good conversation. The fire would roar, except in summer when, if the sun is shining, we might sit out under the yew tree with a glass of pimms. That first literary day, we talked, we argued, we read aloud, shared stories (and, much to the chagrin of my children, we ate all the chocolate meringues). The day was exactly what I hoped it would be.There will be more.Would you be interested? You need bring nothing but enthusiasm for books (though all battered copies of old favourites are welcome), also an enthusiasm for chocolate meringues and their ilk would be helpful. COMMUNITY Our MOT rate is £48.50 but any pre 1980 car is reduced to £28.50. We have done this as the law now states that cars built 40 years ago don’t need an MOT but we think it’s sensible if they do so we have reduced the rate to encourage people to get an MOT. We are keen to get established and believe our service rates are very competitive so please give us a chance and call us for an estimate.

1980’s. Most importantly we will endeavour to carry high quality stock of affordable classics but with a genuine no issues history.

The Winchester Auto Barn and Drivers’ Club is a new company that has been formed specifically to create a local hub and destination for all motorists who need a service, repairs or just an MOT, and also for classic car owners and enthusiasts. We want to form a community for people to basically come and show off their pride and joy, meet kindred spirits, source their next purchase/ parts or just ‘hang’ and talk car.

All of the hugely experienced staff (from Hill Farm Garage, the previous business on the site) have been kept on and are continuing to service, repair and MOT modern vehicles such as Mercedes Benz, Range Rover, Audi, BMW etc... We do specialise particularly in Mercedes Benz and we are an Approved Independent Mercedes Benz Service Agent utilising their latest service software. At the Winchester Auto Barn we aim to provide good value without compromising the quality that we want to deliver – a good reputation is very important to us.

On the sales side the idea is to specialise in vehicles from the 1960’s through to the

Hampshire Medical Fund: for your Hampshire Hospitals Hannah Fensome, Head of Fundraising, tells us more move into the charity sector, and in 2018 I was contacted by a friend about the Head of Fundraising role at the Medical Fund. I was immediately struck by the charity’s mission – we all have personal NHS experiences, I know I do - and I was absolutely thrilled to be offered the position so that now, through our work at the Hampshire Medical Fund, I am able to give back to this incredible organisation, the NHS, which we are so very fortunate to have in this country. How do you fundraise? On the one hand we put on fantastic events throughout the year; this year we are holding a private view of the Christian Dior exhibition at the V&A, we have a Clay Pigeon Shoot, a Classic Car Rally, a Golf Day, a Cycle Sportive, a Medical Careers Seminar for students interested in pursuing a career in medicine, a Cross Country Fun Ride and more. We are also fortunate to be the beneficiary of the Hampshire Country & Garden Festival which is held in Whitchurch in June. In addition to our events, we have built up our ‘200 Club’, loyal supporters of the Medical Fund who donate £200 per year, our ‘500 Club’ who are our corporate supporters, generously donating £500 per year, and we are working hard to increase the numbers of both clubs – needless to say new members are always very much welcome! With the launch of our rebranded website, we are also launching our ‘Hampshire Heroes Club’, for regular giving and community fundraising. As every charity would say, we always need more individual and corporate support to help us deliver our mission. Tell us about the Hampshire Medical Fund The charity – originally named the ‘North Hampshire Medical Fund’ - was founded by the late Earl of Carnarvon in 1981; we raise funds to provide Hampshire hospitals with the latest cutting edge medical equipment which their NHS budget cannot cover; in 2019 we have rebranded to the Hampshire Medical Fund to reflect the work we do – fundraising to purchase equipment for all three Hampshire hospitals within the Hampshire NHS Trust: Andover War Memorial Hospital, Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester, and Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospital. We are all well aware of the financial constraints on the NHS and they’re ever increasing, and so the Hampshire Medical Fund’s work is increasingly necessary to help ensure that our Hampshire hospitals are able to provide the best possible care for patients, and our Hampshire NHS Trust can be at the forefront of clinical excellence with access to the latest medical technology, retaining the highest quality of health workers to care for our community.

Why should people support the Hampshire Medical Fund? The question should be ‘why wouldn’t you support the Hampshire Medical Fund’? Our focus is to engage with and recruit both individuals and businesses across Hampshire to support the charity; we all pay into the NHS through our taxes, but do we know where that money goes? No. By supporting the Hampshire Medical Fund you know with 100% surety that your donation, fundraising efforts or your company’s sponsorship of an event go directly towards buying essential equipment to help your doctors, nurses and therapists provide the best care at your NHS hospitals here in Hampshire. What has been the highlight of your time at the Hampshire Medical Fund so far? I have been consistently and profoundly touched by people’s generosity. It really is quite something.

Our Trustees are all local to Hampshire, including three consultants from the Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, one of whom is the Chief Medical Officer of the Trust. I have a small dedicated team working out of Basingstoke Hospital. How long have you been with the Hampshire Medical Fund? Four and a half months. I was working for many years in digital advertising in London, but for some time I had wanted to make the

WELLBEING

7 REASONS WHY MASSAGES REALLY DO KEEP YOU HEALTHY!

1. It’s Relaxing - When the body is tense and under stress it produces unhealthy levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which can contribute to weight gain, sleeplessness, digestive problems and headaches. Massage therapy has been shown to decrease cortisol levels in the body. This enables the body to enter a recovery mode and also triggers lasting feelings of relaxation and improved mood. 2. It Reduces Stress - Not only can massage therapy help with stress relief, but regular massage sessions over a prolonged period of time can boost energy levels, reduce pain, and stimulate individuals on physical as well as emotional levels. 3. It Can Help Lower Blood Pressure - Regular massage sessions have been found to reduce blood pressure. Consistent massage sessions can also reduce trigger sources for anxiety, hostility, tension, and depression. In turn, lower blood pressure levels can also reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and/or kidney failure, as well as many other health issues.

WHAT IS HYPNOSIS, AND HOW CAN IT HELP? Despite decades of scientific evidence of its therapeutic effectiveness, hypnosis is still thought of as a mysterious form of mind control, whereby a hypnotist exerts power over someone else and directs his or her actions. Movies and fiction wildly misrepresent the procedures and possibilities of hypnosis, generating some strange fears and fantasies about what it is and how it works. And this is especially ironic, as giving people more control over their fears and fantasies is what hypnosis does best. Forget the clichés: the swinging watch, the intoned “Look into my eyes…” These are remnants of old-fashioned ways to help someone focus their attention, by giving them something to fix their gaze upon. You can do it yourself: keep staring up at a single point on the ceiling, or fixedly at your thumbnail, until you feel your mind subtly shift into another gear. This detached awareness, as though suspended in time, is a light state of hypnosis. Forget the idea that to be able to do this readily is weak-willed or will put you in anyone’s power. On the contrary, it requires co-operation and concentration; and if you are not too hot on those, it has been shown that hypnotic ability improves with practice. Forget any fears of being brainwashed into doing something ridiculous, or of falling unconscious, or of having no memory afterwards of what has happened. We do these things to ourselves regularly – spending more than we mean to in the supermarket, sitting in a trance in front of a television or computer screen, drinking too much – but hypnosis cannot make you do any of them. What hypnosis does is direct your attention inwards. The process combines simple routines, such as closing the eyes and relaxing the body, with paying more attention than usual to your inner experiences and sensations. The real mystery about hypnosis is the mystery of the

4. It Promotes Muscle Relaxation - Eliminating tense muscles and increasing flexibility provides relaxation to the affected muscles as well as the body as a whole. The increased activity to the affected sites can also reduce stiffness and oedema (swelling) in the muscles and joints helping reduce pain. 5. It Can Help Improve Circulation - The long-term benefits of massage include improved circulation. Circulation brings damaged, stiff and tense muscles the rich blood supply they need to promote healing and helps remove metabolic waste products away from internal organs and muscles. 6. It Can Help Improve Posture - Massage can help get the body back into proper alignment as it allows the body to relax and loosen the muscles made tense and sore via bad posture. In turn, this allows greater freedom in the muscles and joints improving flexibility and range of motion therefore allowing the body to position itself in its organic and pain-free posture. 7. It Can Help Strengthen the Body’s Immune System - It is a wellknown fact that individuals who experience high levels of stress are more vulnerable to illness and injury. When stress is combined with sleep disturbances and poor nutrition, the impact is directed at the body’s immune system. Studies have indicated that regular massage sessions not only help reduce stress but can also boost the immune system’s capacity and enhance the body’s ability to deliver nourishment. She is in the practice every Thursday. To book an appointment either call 01264 810028 or book online via our website www.the-sop.com brain itself: its flexible and ingenious power to join the dots, see things differently, and change its own mind. In spite of, or perhaps thanks to its long history of controversy and its ambiguous reputation, hypnosis has been rigorously studied, changes in brain activity scanned, professional standards established, benefits officially recognised. Southampton University has been offering hypnotherapy to students since 2016, with a reported reduction in anxiety of 60% (The Times, 26/12/2018). New generations will take for granted approaches to mental and physical well-being that were regarded with suspicion and superstition in the past: what stands the test of time is what still works in time of need. PROMISE OF SPRING

At this time of year our gardens are full of the promise of future delights. Low spring sun filters through the bare branches of trees and shrubs, spotlighting fresh new leaves and jewel-like delicate blooms. First off in mid February and lasting well into March are wonderful drifts of snowdrops, so characteristic of an early English spring. To my mind they are best enjoyed en masse although the detail of the three petalled flowers is also a delight. The winter aconite, Eranthis hyemalis, can be found in swathes in the dry inhospitable spaces under trees. Their neat little globular golden flowers are surrounded by a smart green ruff, giving them a jolly appearance.

COVER IMAGE: CHRIS WILLIAM ART I’m a self-taught, mixed media artist based in Alresford. Although I did study art for GCSE, I first started painting for myself in my spare time whilst at Vet School ten years ago, where I mainly enjoyed painting race horses. Since then, my style has evolved into the colourful and slightly abstract style wildlife which I enjoy painting today. I love capturing the the movement and emotion of the wildlife which I paint and enjoy experimenting with more unusual colours and the paint splatters to achieve this, in my preferred medium of acrylic paint. My favourite animals to paint are ones which are more exotic and unusual, such as the big cats, although I am also inspired by the wildlife we see around Hampshire and those I treat in my work as a local vet. I enjoy spending time visiting galleries and find inspiration from artists such as Hubert de Watrigant, Christian Hook and brothers Chris and Steve Rocks for their unusual use of colour and abstract style. I have always been inspired by wildlife and from a young age wanted to work with animals. This interest was sparked by time spent with my family on a farm in Devon, where I spent many hours working with the various farm animals and still visit now. When I’m not painting (or working as a vet), I can be found walking my dog Lenny in the local countryside and visiting some of our many local pubs. I also enjoy some of the more adrenaline filled outdoor pursuits, particularly surfing and skiing when I have the time. This year, I’m planning on selling my work at various local events such as the Watercress Festival and the Alresford Show. I have also entered a number of national competitions, which is an exciting process and also scary process! As well as selling prints and originals, I also undertake commissions. I enjoy thinking of my paintings hanging in peoples homes around the world and have sold some of my paintings as far afield as Hawaii and Costa Rica! You can buy prints online through Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/uk/ shop/Chriswilliamart For originals and commissions, you can email me at chriswilliamart@ gmail.com All of my artwork can be viewed on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chriswilliamart/

The apparently fragile Crocus tommasinianus is one of my favourite flowers. I love its simplicity and winsome habit of naturalising and spreading in short grass. It is the earliest crocus to flower and has soft silvery mauve petals on translucent white stems. As it flowers so early the leaves have usually died back conveniently before you need to mow the lawn. Many early spring flowerers are woodlanders, taking advantage of the light afforded by the bare branches of deciduous trees. Among these are the dainty windflowers, Anenome nemorosa. They are well named as they always seem to be fluttering in the March wind. A garden anemone, Anenome blanda, lacks the dancing grace of the native windflower but has more significant flowers, creating a wonderful sea of blue. The first wild primroses appear now but not yet in full carpeting mode. The flower most associated with March, Mother’s Day, equinoctial gales and spring showers is the daffodil. Also known as the Lent lily, Narcissus pseudo-narcissus, is a dainty bloom but its fragile appearance is belied by its ability to dance through showers and gales, sparkling in spring sunshine. Some of my favourite garden daffodils are cultivars of narcissus species, such as N. “Thalia” and N. “Jack Snipe”. Their relatively small stature means that the dying foliage is easily obscured by the fresh new leaves of early summer plants. Written by Catherine Thomas

HOW TO RENOVATE YOUR LAWN AFTER A CHALLENGING SUMMER fewer lawn seeds and is much more economical. Top-dressing creates the ideal environment for the new seed to establish and will greatly aid the recovery of your lawn. We recommend 5kg per square meter. It’s back-breaking work but well worth the investment.

L

ast year was particularly challenging for lawns. We suffered a late, wet and cold spring which was soon followed by many weeks of high temperatures and drought. Lawns died back and I am now seeing many that have still not recovered. If growth has not returned by now then your lawn will need some work to restore it. Spring is a great time to renovate your lawn. As professional lawn care specialists, we have the necessary knowledge and skills to turn even the most unattractive patch of grass back to a beautiful green, lush lawn again. Read on to learn how. WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO RESTORE YOUR LAWN? Lawns took a beating over the dry, hot summer months. The warm and wet weather which will return soon creates the ideal conditions for your lawn to recover quickly from spring renovations. Grass needs warmth, moisture and good levels of light in order to grow well. These conditions begin to return in early spring, making now the ideal time to improve your lawn. If your lawn is suffering with bare patches or weak grass growth in certain areas, understanding the cause of these problems is the first step to correcting them. Bare patches and weak growth are often symptoms of compaction, where the soil lacks air pockets which restricts root development. Grass growing on compacted soil is more susceptible to disease and is less drought tolerant. The compacted soil drains poorly due to the lack of air gaps so you see stunted growth and weak grass. THE SOLUTION? PROFESSIONAL LAWN CARE Aerate your lawn before introducing new grass plants by overseeding. Before you think about over-seeding you may want to consider whether your lawn needs a good raking, or for larger lawns, mechanical scarification. Not all lawns need scarification but if they do it’s really important to do it now before the dry summer weather returns. Both scarification and aeration create the best conditions for overseeding. Unlike re-seeding, over-seeding works with the existing lawn and blends in with existing grass. It’s also far less labour intensive, uses

Most lawns have a lot of new weeds and moss following last summer when grass died back in the drought allowing moss and weeds to germinate. Newly germinated grass seed can be killed by the treatments used to kill lawn weeds. Older, existing lawn grasses are robust enough to withstand these treatments. Getting timing and quantities right is essential to success. Remember that once germination begins your new grass seeds need moisture to survive. They won’t be able to manage times without water until they have well established roots. If it doesn’t rain then you need to remember to keep them watered for the first few weeks. WHAT ELSE DOES PROFESSIONAL LAWN CARE OFFER? Grass is just like every other plant, it needs the right nutrition to survive.Your soil type will affect the availability of nutrients in the soil to feed and sustain your restored lawn. As an independent lawn care company we can offer you a free lawn survey to properly assess the absolute best type of lawn care regime for your specific lawn. Any nutritional issues should be addressed before over-seeding and lawn renovation works begin. WETTING AGENTS How do lawn wetting agents work and why use them? Prolonged hot dry weather affects the soil’s ability to absorb and retain water (this is called hydrophobic soil). Wetting agents encourage water to remain in the soil next to the root-zone of your grass which means less water wastage through better water retention. Shrekfeet Lawn and Garden Services is proud to be the local independent lawn care specialist in your area. Lawn recovery is extremely labour intensive work and many of the specialist treatments are not available through DIY chains or on the internet. PLEASE ACT NOW We genuinely do have a limit on the number of treatment slots we can offer due to the amount of work involved in successful lawn recovery work, so please get in touch now and book your free lawn survey. FOOD & DRINK had the opportunity to sit with the judges to gain insight into what makes a good entry. Level one student, Brooke Savage, reflected on the competition: “I have learnt a lot and now understand the amount of work that goes into making a quality sausage. They judge it in so much detail, looking at the texture and the skin. Being involved has definitely given me tips I’ll be able to use when I make my own sausages.”

THE GREAT HAMPSHIRE SAUSAGE AND PIE COMPETITION In February a panel of expert judges from across the UK gathered at Eastleigh College to participate in The Great Hampshire Sausage and Pie Competition 2019 organised by local food group Hampshire Fare. There were twelve categories in the competition including Traditional Pork Sausage, Hampshire Sausage, Speciality Sausage, Beef and Lamb Sausage, Cold-eating Pie, Hot-eating Pie, Charcuterie,Young Sausage Maker and Black Pudding. Thirteen judges assessed the entries against strict criteria including appearance, filling,

Judges were particularly impressed by the quality of the entries and also the unique flavour combinations. Claire Holland, Chief Judge, commented: “Overall the standard of the entries has definitely risen compared to last year, particularly in the Young Sausage Maker category. Competitions such as this are an invaluable way for butchers to access the expert opinion of experienced and knowledgeable people within the industry.” Hospitality and Catering students from Eastleigh College assisted at the competition under the guidance of tutor Greg Cheeseman. FEATURE

A BAGGY DOG STORY T

he gadget that Lord and Master (LaM) had stuck in her ear registered a whopping 104. She dragged herself off to the bedroom and LaM thoughtfully switched on the TV for her; “Look Sweetings, it’s that depressing musical you like – the one where Wolverine sings.” And so, lying in bed, a little delirious, she’s idly watching the cast of Les Mis skipping out of the screen and reappearing on the duvet, to prance over the ridges made by her legs. During her recent bout of glandular fever, she imagined she saw Cher and Meryl Streep cavorting over the sitting room rug. Here we go again, she thinks. A little later, the water glass is empty on her bedside table and she’s relieved to hear the back door slam. Heralding the return of LaM from his obligatory dog walk, usually her domain, along with most of the domestic tasks, LaM has manfully stepped into the breach caused by her inconvenient dose of the ‘flu. Quite what obscure strain it must be that’s laid her low she can’t imagine, having trotted off to the supermarket pharmacy for their jabs this and every winter, for years. “Darling, please..” she croaks as he explodes into the bedroom, bellowing; “DOG POO! Quite honestly, I think the world’s gone mad! I flicked it with a stick, away from the path and right underneath a patch of brambles that I’m fairly convinced no family will be picnicking under anytime soon. But no! That, apparently, is not good enough! I’m to gather it into a plastic bag, so that it can go to a landfill and take millions of years to break down! I thought that the idea was to cut back on plastics. At least my way, the elements can do their thing – in a few days it’ll be gone.” He took a breath. “Thirsty – please…” feebly she pointed at the bedside table. “Shouting at me, they were. Said they’d got it on their shoes, they did. But it wasn’t our dog’s poo – it must have been some other dog’s poo.” LaM seized the glass and stomped off downstairs to the kitchen, returning with it full to the brim of cold water. She gulped it all down. It was, quite possibly, the most delicious drink of her entire life. He continued as if there’d been no pause; “And on the way back to the car park, I came across a bush festooned with these bags,

bulging with their noxious loads. Like some dystopian Christmas tree. How can that be an improvement on what I did – I ask you?” Even in her sickly state, she thought of the rolls of biodegradable poo bags that she had in various colours, in various coat pockets. Never without them. But she didn’t have the strength to speak on the subject. In a couple of days’ time, she’d be well enough to debate it. Probably tell dear old LaM that his method was very à la Forestry Commission and quite de rigueur at some National Trust properties. But in the meantime she just wanted to put her hot dry cheek against her cool smooth pillow and sleep. Ordinarily a huge fan, she also wished Hugh Jackman would take his troupe and troop off back into the television. Awaking from her nap she found LaM perched on the edge of the bed, fresh glass of water in one hand and two paracetamol in the other. He helped her sit up and a damp flannel he must have placed whilst she slept, fell from her forehead. The dog had also sneaked into the bedroom, sliding from the floor and up onto the bed with remarkable skill, almost defying the laws of physics. Stroking her spaniel’s silky head with one hand, whilst the other was stroked by LaM was both soothing and gratifying by turn. “I’ve ordered your favourite curry. Now, I know that you probably haven’t much appetite, but I read somewhere that spices are extremely good for colds and ‘flu. You should try to eat a little bit when I bring it back. I’ll leave the dog up here as she seems very concerned about you. As am I, Sweetings. Sorry about my rant earlier. I’ve found the poo bags and I’ll make sure that I’m armed with them for the morning walk. You’re not to worry about a thing.” She wasn’t worried and, actually, the thought of a curry didn’t fill her with disgust. But somewhat removed from reality, she slid down her pillows as the dog sighed and snuggled up to her. LaM departed. Jean Valjean et al continued their performance on her bed, only now, she observed with slight detachment, they had tiny poo bags in their little hands.. But the dog was taking no notice of them and neither, in her pleasant delirium she decided, would she. © 2019 Lucia Foster-Found

MONTEVERDI’S 1610 VESPERS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN AT WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL Southampton Philharmonic Choir present this jewel of the early Baroque in the magnificent setting of Winchester Cathedral on Saturday 23 March at 7.30pm. Performing alongside them are the Southampton University Philharmonic Choir, The Pilgrims' School Chamber Choir, soloists sopranos Charlotte Ashley, Lucinda Cox; tenors Peter Davoren, James Robinson; baritones Edmund Saddington and Simon Gallear and the Corporation of Musick, a cornett and sackbut ensemble dedicated to recreating the sounds and styles of the music once heard in the royal courts, churches and streets of Renaissance and Baroque Europe.Vespers, or evening prayers, are part of the Hours of the Divine Office, a set of daily prayers of the Catholic Church, which have remained structurally unchanged for hundreds of years. Monteverdi’s Vespers of the Blessed Virgin are based around several biblical texts traditionally part of the liturgy for several Marian Feasts. This piece is regarded as one of the most ambitious works of religious music before Bach, because of its huge scale, including multiple vocal parts and seven soloists. Although much of the rich choral music is traditional by the standards of the day, the Vespers was ground breaking in its introduction of brass, wind and string instruments, but also of the very florid solo lines associated with the new techniques of Opera. The Vespers is very much a transitional piece, introducing new Baroque features with dramatic expressiveness of vocal virtuosity but retaining many of the glories of 16th Century polyphony. That potent cocktail is part of the great ongoing appeal of the work. For more information visit www.southamptonphil.org or call the Cathedral Box Office 01962 857 275 to get your tickets.

EXTRAORDINARILY GOOD WORK The inaugural Farleigh School Art Competition was adjudicated by Josie Eastwood of Josie Eastwood Fine Art in Longstock and by Fr Simon Everson, Headmaster of Farleigh School. Commenting on the standard of the art on display, Josie said, “I very much enjoyed judging the Farleigh art prizes. It was not an easy task given the consistently high standard of work and the great variety. It is good to see that each child is encouraged to develop and to find their own style. The winning pieces showed not only talent, but originality, and importantly also, ‘soul’.We could have awarded many more prizes, so it was a tough task. As ever, Farleigh’s Art Department is a flourishing hive of creativity and extraordinarily good work.” Years 4 to 8 were asked to produce pieces on the theme of 'Farleigh' in different media - mono printing, pointillism, mosaics, paintings inspired by Monet, and lino cuts. A final category of ‘self-entries’ comprised pupils who entered something entirely different from the rest of their year group, a notable example being the skirt and bodice made out of newspaper with the bodice block printed with the Farleigh tree. Jo Maw, Head of Art at Farleigh and herself an artist, added, “I am so pleased that every child entered the Art Competition; I so enjoyed seeing how they interpreted the brief in their own way and put their emotions and personalities into the pieces.” Josie Eastwood, has over 30 years’ experience working in the art world through building and establishing her own business but also through time spent working alongside two major dealers in London and at Sotheby's auction house. In addition, her academic background in History of Art but also as a painter gives her the fluency to work closely with both artists and patrons. Josie Eastwood Fine Art has been established since 1991 and is one of Hampshire's leading contemporary private art galleries. The new gallery in Longstock stages five exhibitions a year with a mixed programme of contemporary painting, ceramics and sculpture, celebrating and supporting both established and emerging artists. www.josieeastwood.com
