like. Now when you think about it, you’re getting 95% of what you would with a new kitchen, it is exception value, just read our reviews to see what our customers think. Will it look like a new kitchen? Yes, if you give your kitchen a full makeover it will, and the quality is probably a better finish than what you might get from national retailers.
A kitchen makeover can be as much or as little as you want it to be, from just swapping the cupboard doors and hinges, all the way up to changing everything other than the units. Here are some of our most frequently asked questions that should help you understand what can be achieved, why replace it when you can reface it!
Ben Reid - Director
Our doors are not a standard size is this a problem? No problem at all, our doors are all made to order here in the UK, so we can have them made in any size. Will the colour of the units change? Yes, we can reface any units that are on show such as sides of tall units or units either side of the hob. We can even change the colour of the front edge of your units. Will a makeover stop us from changing the layout? No, in fact most makeovers we do involve some form of a change in layout, our most common being installing a tall oven housing for an eye level oven.
Do you use your own fitters? Yes indeed we do, and our Master Craftsmen have a background in the Super Yacht industry, so you are in safe hands.
So give us a call for a free, no obligation quotation today to discover what we can do with your kitchen, and with 3 customer service awards from the world’s largest home improvement App HOUZZ you are in safe hands. *40% off kitchen furniture & Labour only, does not apply to appliances or specialist items. How long does a makeover take? A hard question to answer as this does depend on how much we are doing, but on average a makeover takes 5 days, and if you are just changing your doors 1 day is usually enough.

I found Happy Kitchens on Houzz, and I decided to go with them as the reviews were encouraging and I liked that they were a small, local company. From the outset, Ben was extremely professional and understands exactly what the client wants. The Happy Kitchen team were all fantastic; punctual, hardworking, incredibly tidy and most importantly they really cared about the quality of their work. We are really thrilled with our new kitchen and it has totally exceeded our expectations. Joanne McCarthy

DANEBURY VINEYARDS CELLAR DOOR DAY
JODY SCHECKTER ACCEPTS THE CHALLENGE Former Formula One world champion turned farmer, Jody Scheckter, has this week confirmed that he will accept the challenge from Italy to settle the debate about who makes the best mozzarella.
An opportunity to visit the long established Hampshire vineyard not normally open to the public. The tour starts at 2pm with a walk and tutored talk in the vineyard, followed by a tasting of two Danebury still white wines in our traditional tasting room, with a visit to our cellar and an opportunity to purchase the wines tasted.
The invitation to a taste-off was made by Pier Maria Saccani, the head of the consortium of buffalo mozzarella producers in Campania, when Jody Scheckter claimed to make buffalo mozzarella that is at least as good as the Italian stuff on his Hampshire farm, as reported in The Daily Telegraph in February.
Note :- Parking in field. Please wear appropriate footwear for walking on grass and gravel. Dress accordingly for weather. Walking distance between outside areas is a few hundred yards. Standing room mainly in tasting room, some chairs. Two flights of 6 steps to cellar. Toilets. Card or cash for purchases.
This fighting talk surfaced in light of discussions about which UK producers stand to benefit from a possible no-deal Brexit. Keen to prove to the world that you can make the best mozzarella here in England, Mr Scheckter is taking the challenge seriously:
This event takes place on Friday 10th may from 2pm - 4pm. At Danebury Vineyards, Nether Wallop, Stockbridge, SO20 6JX
“I stand by my claims that our Hampshire-made mozzarella is at least as good as Italian mozzarella. We get it to the retailers the same day that it is made, whereas it takes up to five days for Italian mozzarella to reach its destination. “Our buffalo spend most of the time in the field whereas in Italy most are kept inside. We have worked hard over the last four years to get our quality consistently good. I am confident in the quality of our product, but it is not going to be easy as they have been making it for hundreds of years in Italy learning from each other, at worst we may learn something.”
£11.25 per ticket, available from www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ danebury-vineyards-cellar-door-day-vineyard-visit-tasting-tickets57605877731?aff=erellivmlt
Join us every Friday Night from 6pm for Fish & Chips You’ll find cod & haddock on the menu, plus a chef’s special which might range from crumbed monkfish cheeks to Cornish grilled sardines.
Forty years ago this year, Jody was celebrating winning on the track when he was crowned Formula One World Champion with Ferrari. He commented on this anniversary: “Forty years ago it was cars and now it is mozzarella. I like to win but hate to lose. Preparation is key and I will be putting as much thought and focus into this cheese prix as I did my racing.” Arrangements are yet to be confirmed for the location and date of the cheese prix but Jody Scheckter hinted at it possibly happening before Brexit. www.hampshirefare.co.uk Image credit: Adrian Dennis

CONTEMPORARY ART AT STOCKBRIDGE THE STILWELL ART GROUP EXHIBITION STOCKBRIDGE TOWN HALL, HAMPSHIRE APRIL 27TH – MAY 5TH The Stilwell Art Group work together under the inspirational teaching of Anthea Stilwell. This exciting collective exhibition at the Stockbridge Town Hall shows the range and diversity of work produced over the last two years by fourteen dynamic and contemporary artists from the group. “There is a unique buzz when we meet to paint together, it takes courage to ‘let go’ and to trust yourself – that comes from Anthea’s teaching, but the group is supportive and we learn a lot from each other too – and that makes you brave, take risks and the results are most exciting and rewarding!” says Jenny HillNorton who co-founded and co-ordinates the group. “We are all different in what we bring to the group but we are linked by our passion to paint for the joy of it – and I think that is evident in what we create together. This exhibition is a celebration of us growing as artists.” The group is energetic and meets regularly throughout the year in Hampshire and other

Within the last two years the group has met and drawn together at RHS Wisley Gardens, The Moscow City Ballet company rehearsals at Chichester Festival Theatre, St Michael’s Mount Cornwall and many other venues. Subject matter is varied and diverse including figures, landscapes and still lifes. The creative process starts with drawing and ideas are then explored expressively in a wide range of media including oils, acrylics, watercolours, charcoal, collage and mixed media. “Anthea has great experience and originality as a teacher (having taught at Harrow School) but she never tells you directly what to do, rather pulling it out of us – which is really challenging but we all respond and produce the most exciting and fascinating results!” This exhibition encapsulates the energy and diversity of the group. It is their fifth collective show. All work on display is for sale and new work will be hung during the show, which runs from April 27th to May 5th at Stockbridge Town Hall. THE BOOKMARK OPENED ITS DOORS ON HIGH STREET STOCKBRIDGE LAST APRIL, AND IS CURRENTLY IN CELEBRATION MODE!
Over the last year they’ve welcomed a great many people to the shop – both Test Valley residents and visitors from all over. All were excited to have a bookshop in the village for the very first time in its history, and have become loyal returning customers – happy to find a local, independent and eclectic place to discover new titles and revisit old ones. Everyone remarks on the wide range of unusual books, as well as on the lovely ‘bookish’ feel of the place, and even on the ‘scent’ of books’ they encounter when walking through the door. Over the last year The Bookmark also been getting involved with the cultural life of Stockbridge. It has sponsored or participated in events featuring nature writer Tim Dee, children’s writer Jim Eldridge, and mystery writer Elizabeth Moore. In addition, they’ve partnered with the team at Books in the Barn from Andover and helped sell books for visiting authors Frank Gardner and Andrew Roberts, among others. A new book club was formed by local residents who were introduced to each other through The Bookmark, and at last report it was thriving. The shop also collaborated with the Stockbridge Cinema Club on two film events, On Chesil Beach and Journey’s End, by bringing to town the filmmakers who translated those books to the screen. All in all, it’s been a busy, happy first year – and things are just getting started! There will be more author events this summer, and other surprises along the way. June 15-22 will be Independent Bookshop Week nationwide, so hopefully this will help grow the popularity and recognition of this year-old shop. Do drop in and have a browse. NOW FELIX KEEP ON WALKING Before ‘Keep calm and carry on,’ there was Felix the Cat. From my mother I inherited the last surviving little plate of a 1920s doll’s tea set. Over the caption “Now Felix keep on walking,” Felix staunchly keeps going despite the frenzy of dogs barking and other cats panicking. Mind you, Felix looks strapping enough to handle any setback; but the kind of resilience you need to take difficulties in your stride is more to do with size of attitude than physique. If you believe that you have, or can find, the resources you need to handle a situation, it becomes manageable. And every difficulty you deal with increases your ability to rise to the next challenge. Conversely, every upset, shock or pressure that you don’t feel able to cope with will knock your confidence and deplete your energy, until just keeping up with day to day living can become overwhelming. And then any trivial setback tends to swell out of all proportion, while your well-being and self-respect become harder to maintain.
do not prepare you to cope better when difficulties arise, as they inevitably will. Many people mistakenly feel safer dwelling on what could go wrong, than imagining a happy outcome; as if worrying in advance might somehow avert disaster, or as if expecting the worst will save you from being disappointed. But when you lack confidence, you can’t deal assertively with the problems that are always snapping at our heels. Keeping going will bring you through a situation and to another place. It means not letting yourself be daunted or side-tracked by the growling of your own regrets or resentments, or frightened by uncertainties. Confidence means ‘with trust’. This is not the kind of trust that shuts its eyes and crosses its fingers, like the ‘peril-sensitive’ sunglasses in The Hitch-hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy that go black in the presence of danger, so that you can’t see what you don’t want to. It is not the kind of trust that depends for its peace of mind on locks and alarms, belt and braces, insurance schemes and guarantees; or on rosy-tinted wishful thinking, either. What you can trust is the extraordinary capacity we all have to regenerate, change, come up with new possibilities. You can trust that (like everyone else) you will make wrong decisions and be disappointed, ashamed, frustrated, like everyone else; but keep walking, and your view will change as you walk.
But confidence can be learned. It is not a matter of temperament, but a way of thinking. Disheartening thoughts disempower you. They

RECYCLE MORE WITH TVBC Test Valley Borough Council is encouraging more residents to carry on recycling after seeing a three per cent rise in the waste that was recycled over the past year. In Test Valley, 94 per cent of waste is either recycled or turned into electricity, with only six per cent going to landfill. As part of the Hampshire Waste Partnership, the council is working with other local authorities to review the waste collection service, with aspirations to recycle thin plastics and glass in brown bins.
Back in February, Test Valley Borough Council's contractor, Forest Traffic Services, commenced its annual clean-up of the A303 and A34 verges, laybys and slip roads within the borough. It took around three weeks to complete the work, with 634 bags of litter collected amounting to nearly 3 tonnes of litter and other roadside debris. The work is carried out between January and March each year, as the vegetation has died back, allowing for easier retrieval of litter. Environment Portfolio Holder, councillor Graham Stallard, said “Now the clean-up is complete, the difference is staggering. You can clearly see the improvements we have made from our before and after photos. I find it horrendous that in just one year, so much litter has been discarded along these two roads. “The most common items we’ve collected are drinks related such as bottles and cups. They can only have been thrown out of vehicle windows with such disregard for the local environment. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure the area they live in is treated with respect. I would urge everyone to dispose of their litter in the correct way. Just take it home and put it in your bin!” For more information on its Love Where You Live initiative, including clean-up campaigns and educational visits, go to www.testvalley.gov. uk/love or www.facebook.com/lovewhereyoulivetestvalley.
The council’s recycling team helped to achieve an improved recycling rate in 2018 through a range of activities, including promoting various information about what can be recycled in the borough. The authority also uses the Recycling Stars initiative, which sees officers visiting schools and educating youngsters on the benefits of recycling. After seeing a rise in the amount of waste that was recycled in the borough over the past 12 months, the council’s environmental portfolio holder is encouraging more residents to get involved. Environmental portfolio holder, councillor Graham Stallard, said: “Recycling is important to our residents and the council, and we are constantly reviewing recycling options within the borough. So far, residents have done a fantastic job recycling more waste, which has brought the council another step closer to achieving a higher recycling rate across the borough. “Over the past year, TVBC’s environmental service have taken a number of brilliant steps to improve the council’s recycling rates. Using the Recycling Stars campaign has enabled the team to reach out to the next generation, raising awareness of the importance of recycling and showing just how simple it can be!” Residents are able to recycle items that are not eligible for kerbside collection at their nearest Local Waste Recycling Centre. WELLBEING has no downtime and delivers immediate results that will help to create a more youthful complexion. Dorthe explains; “A clear complexion is desired by many but it can be very difficult to achieve and maintain even with a set skincare regime. The Carbon Facial is often known as The Charcoal Facial or The Black Faced Doll Facial and creates a porcelain dolls complexion. It is one of the most advanced treatments for minor skin imperfections and promotes a smooth and glowing complexion.”
THE FORUM’S BEAUTY EDITOR TESTS OUT THE NEW CARBON FACIAL AT DORTHE THOMAS SPA It’s always exciting to discover a new MediSpa treatment and today Dorthe Thomas doesn’t disappoint with the new Carbon Facial. This facial is apparently the gold standard for acne, pigmentation and wrinkle reduction and is one of the very latest non-invasive rejuvenation treatments on the market. I popped into Dorthe’s Award Winning Spa in my lunchbreak to try out this treatment which I’m told takes just 30 minutes,
Our Award Winning treatments include your everyday beauty and wellbeing essentials; Facials, Waxing, Threading, Massage, Reflexology, Eyelash Extensions, Manicures, Pedicures and Spray Tan. We also specialise in advanced MediSpa treatments; IPL Hair Removal & Skin Rejuvenation, Dermaplaning, Medik8 Skin Peels, Derma Pen, Microblading, Lip Filler, Tattoo Removal, Vit B12 Injections, Profhilo and LipoContrast.
After cleansing the skin, Dorthe applies Carbon Paste to my face, then high intensity pulses of light are delivered from the laser which destroys debris clogged in the pores. This state of the art laser treatment helps refine enlarged pores which reduce oil secretion and helps remove blackheads and whiteheads. The treatment stimulates the face to produce more collagen which helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment isn’t painful and is over before I know it. I’m delighted with the results - my skin feels silky smooth, looks glowing and is plumped up. Some of the enlarged pores on my T-Zone look smaller and my complexion is clearer and brighter. I’m happy to leave the Spa make up free but before I go I book myself in for a repeat treatment in 4 weeks’ time. Dorthe is offering Forum readers 20% off the Carbon Facial in April – quote Forum4 at time of booking. Call 01264 748300 or email info@dorthethomasspa.com to find out more. www. dorthethomasspa.com

GARDEN
LAWNS ARE HUNGRY FEEDERS; LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT THEY NEED TO REMAIN HEALTHY THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
F
ar too few gardeners understand what goes into the perfect lawn. Most think it is okay to pick up a bag of weed & feed, sprinkle it liberally on the lawn and all will be okay.Your lawn has a complex relationship with nutrition, which changes throughout the growing season and these things need to be taken into consideration if you want a healthy, attractive, disease free lawn.
You may be thinking that surely it can’t be that complicated. Let’s try to explain the basics. When it comes to lawn nutrition there are really three main things to think about; fertiliser composition, timing and application methods.
that as the days warm and the plant needs more nutrition it is gradually made available. It tends to be more expensive but it certainly is effective, provides professional results and gradual grass growth, rather than a sudden burst of growth resulting in excess mowing requirements. SO WE HAVE COVERED COMPOSITION AND ALSO TIMING OF APPLICATION. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT APPLICATION METHODS Most home owners who buy their lawn feed from the garden centre will have a choice between granular or liquid feeds. As we mentioned earlier, ideally you want a product that releases its nutrients into your lawn slowly, as required, over time. There are two downsides to cheaper liquid feeding. The first is that it tends to be immediate.Your lawn gets an instant food hit then nothing. The other issue is that liquid feeding can be very time consuming and it’s difficult to get the application rates right. We do use liquid, foliar feeds later in the season when we can mix a complex combination of micro-nutrients, amino acids and soil conditioners in a flow release formula that more appropriate for professional use.
Fertilisation is important as it influences the colour of your lawn, its ability to cope with the stresses of drought, mowing and extremes of temperature and to fight against disease and weed infiltration. Choosing the right fertiliser and applying it correctly really is the key to success. Chemical and organic fertilisers display the nutrient content by way of three different numbers. These three numbers represent the compounds Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium (or Potash). Often displayed as N-P-K. The numbers correspond to the percentage of each of these compounds in the fertiliser inside the pack. That’s the easy bit! What each of these compounds does for the plant is probably the most important part. Nitrogen helps leaf growth. Phosphorus helps the growth of roots and flowers, and Potassium is important for the overall health of the plant. When to promote leaf or root growth is really the key to successful lawn nutrition. You want healthy leaf growth in the growing season to encourage a stronger grass plant, but you don’t want to go into winter with too much leaf that can be damaged by the bad weather. High nitrogen fertilisers encourage quick leaf growth but potentially make the plant more susceptible to the attacks of pests and diseases. Phosphorus is important going into winter to encourage healthy and robust roots to support your lawn throughout the challenging months ahead. Another important factor in selecting the right lawn fertiliser is the type of nitrogen actually in the product. Nitrogen fertiliser may consist of fastrelease or controlled-release nitrogen. For lawns, fertilisers containing controlled-release nitrogen sources are best. Lawn care professionals tend to use coated granular product. The coating is formulated to break down gradually over time, therefore providing a slow release of fertiliser as the plants require it. Cheaper fertilisers break down with moisture. We use a technical fertiliser which activates as the temperature increases, ensuring
Controlled-release granular feed is by far the best choice for amateur use. Most gardeners will attempt to apply this themselves and this can create issues. Application by hand is almost impossible to get right. The granules slip through your fingers easily and distribution is uneven. Apply too much to one area and you scorch the grass, often blackening or killing it in patches. Uneven application results in uneven grass growth. Ideally use is a broadcast spreader consisting of a hopper holding the fertiliser and releasing a controlled amount onto a rotating disk, powered by the forward movement of the wheels, distributing the granules in a controlled and even manner. The amount of fertiliser released is controlled by adjusting holes in the base. Getting the quantities right is important and you must calibrate the spreader before you use it, based on the flow rate of the fertiliser, the granule size, the application rate required and the size of the hopper holes. It’s important not to miss any of the lawn or to overlap as you make each pass with the spreader to avoid stripes. I’ve tried to make things as simple as possible but lawn nutrition, product selection and application rates can be relatively complicated. By the time you have bought the product, the right applicator and factored in the time it takes to carry out the work, you can usually save money by asking a lawn care professional to help look after this part of your garden for you. After all, if you want professional results then a professional is usually the person to ask. Ian Kenyon runs Shrekfeet Lawn and Garden Services. HAMPSHIRE COLLEGIATE PREP SCHOOL INVESTORS TAKE ON THE CITY A unique initiative is underway at Hampshire Collegiate Prep School with the launch of a Stock Market Investment Club, the first of its kind in the UK. With access to live London Stock Exchange data, Prep School children aged between 9 and 11 are developing their financial literacy skills by applying their mathematical and computer knowledge in a real-world application. They are exploring new topics such as the impact of Brexit on investments, economics, world news, risk management and ethical investment. Guiding the enthusiastic young investors through the complexities of investing in stocks and shares is financial expert Simon Brooks, previously Senior Fund Manager at Liverpool Asset Management. Divided into small groups, each team has a Lead Manager, a Deputy Fund Manager and two Research Analysts. Club members have finalised their investment choices and they are making real purchases of stocks and shares. The school has recently accepted a donation to their investment pot from regional law firm Thrings to invest on the Stock Market. The club is part of the school’s ambitious plans to expand its fields of study and engage pupils in a broad range of real life experiences beyond the curriculum. Since September, club members have pondered investment terminology; considered the ethics of investing in different sectors such as pharmaceuticals, oil and food production; explored the mysteries of the Financial Times; and experimented with different forms of statistical analysis. “In a world where there is much talk of preparation, we are engaging pupils with authentic learning experiences in a safe and controlled environment; nothing quite so much tests your principles as backing them in a competitive market. The club introduces the children to a variety of complex multi-layered problem-solving experiences, building their competencies, their confidence and their understanding of the wider world,” said Cliff Canning, Headmaster, Hampshire Collegiate School. HOME sources claiming as many as 13,000 ex-service personnel are living rough. David Wood said, ‘We’ve had a number of problems with TVBC, in particular, because they have refused to get a veteran into accommodation. It’s so bad that after 6 months dealing with TVBC, this veteran is now being housed by Wiltshire Council.’
STANDING UP FOR OUR VETERANS Local Andover Alliance campaigners have come out in protest over the poor treatment of our Armed Forces Veterans, both locally and nationally. Mrs Irene Williams said ‘As the Stepmother of a veteran of at least eight tours of duty who’s suffering with PTSD and still battling with the Government, I fully support this campaign.’ Despite Andover being the Home of the British Army HQ and with nearby Middle Wallop (Army Aviation) and many other military facilities, TVBC was recently called the worst Council in the UK to help with veterans affairs, by David Wood, Legislation Officer for national charity Help 4 Homeless Veterans. Andover has a large number of veterans in our community and can often have issues being housed after they leave the forces, especially those suffering from physical and mental health issues, who are unable to work.Veterans homelessness is a problem across the UK, with some
More than just housing is needed; timely and specialist mental health is desperately required. In 2018, 78 serving military personnel and veterans took their own lives following mental health struggles, exceeding the number of battlefield fatalities in 11 of the 13 years that British troops were in Afghanistan. Jordan Wylie, Army veteran and star of Channel 4’s reality show Hunted, saw several friends killed while serving with the King’s Royal Hussars and was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Jordan said, ‘For me, we are failing our own people. We are failing the British troops that have served this great nation. It is an absolute tragedy that veteran suicides are happening.’ David Coole, Army veteran and Andover Alliance spokesperson said ‘Given our local military history, TVBC should be the best Council in the UK for supporting our veterans, not the worst. The Andover Alliance is committed to supporting those who served in times of war, military conflict and peace and will provide the leadership for veterans affairs where all levels of local and national government have failed those who have served our country.’ In their Manifesto the Andover Alliance wants to introduce a Veterans Officer (VO) as a paid role within TVBC who will be an advocate for any veteran presenting an issue, will ensure veterans receive the top housing priority and will support both community and work based programmes that improve greater community integration and employment opportunities. www.andoveralliance.co.uk

COMMUNITY
HOME “We’ve also changed the layout of some sections to allow easier access to some of the most popular items. “This refurbishment forms part of our investment in libraries across Hampshire, modernising these important public facilities so that they not only reflect the needs of the communities in which they are located, but are effectively maintained and sustained in the long term.”
ALL WELCOME AT ANDOVER LIBRARY – DOORS OFFICIALLY OPEN AFTER REFURBISHMENT Andover Library is ready and waiting to welcome residents to experience the range of improvements made at the branch as part of a £325,000 refurbishment by Hampshire County Council. The County Council’s Executive Member for Recreation and Heritage, Councillor Seán Woodward, visited the branch on 21 March to officially open the branch alongside staff and visitors. Councillor Woodward said: “I’m delighted to officially open the doors of the newly improved Andover Library. It really does offer a great space for customers to meet, read, learn and play in. “There’s a new community room available to groups and organisations, and a larger children’s library, meaning we can accommodate more customers and encourage more young readers.
WORK COMPLETED BETWEEN OCTOBER 2018 & FEBRUARY 2019 • A larger children’s area to accommodate more activities • A new community room for hire • An accessible toilet • Flexible spaces for new partners • Upgraded, movable furniture to allow flexibility for events and activities • General redecoration, including energy efficient LED lighting • Improvements to the customer entrance and reception area Councillor Woodward added: “I would encourage everyone in the area to come and visit, and to get the most out of your local library.” Plans are in place for the Andover Registration Office to be colocated with the library from summer 2019. www.hants.gov.uk/news/21marchAndoverLibrary
