Make your OLD kitchen a NEW kitchen for a fraction of the cost of buying a new kitchen Our kitchen and utility room have been transformed and we are totally happy! Having spent far too long deliberating over a new kitchen it was a relief when Ben visited us at home. He understood immediately what we were trying to achieve and gave us excellent practical advice and good ideas to refine and improve our plans. His 'can do', energetic and professional approach is brilliant and he made the whole process easy and straightforward. His team of craftsmen, in particular Dan, are wonderful. Courteous, friendly and professional, their workmanship, knowledge and attention to detail is amazing. Everything (and more!) was done within the time frames given. I just wish we'd given Ben the job years ago! Sue & Rob Harris Happy Kitchens are quite unique as we are able to offer top quality products, available in any size, fitted by the best professionals in the business. WINCHESTER FESTIVAL
T
5TH - 13TH JULY
he Winchester Festival returns with a packed programme of talks that will take us from Charles Spencer’s account of Charles II evading capture by Cromwell’s army to Andrew Marr’s history of modern Britain to Simon Schama’s contemporary reflections on the arts, politics and food. The concerts will bring you sacred vocal music from the Sistine Chapel, Renaissance repertoire from Spain, Portugal and the New World and a quintessentially English evening of Elgar and Vaughan Williams in the Cathedral. John Keats, who wrote Ode to Autumn while in Winchester, is remembered in a dramatic presentation and in actor walks and the talented young musicians of Winchester will once again be delighting audiences in the lunchtime series.

Since the Festival started in 1998 there has been an extraordinary increase in the number of concerts and talks happening in Winchester so that every week - almost every day - there are wonderful performances across the city. Winchester now has a wealth of music and literature throughout the year and we have decided, with a great deal of deliberation and a lot of sadness, that this will be the final Winchester Festival. We hope you will find many events to interest you in this year’s programme and that our last Festival will be one to remember. We are hugely grateful and indebted to everyone who has been involved with the Festival over the last twenty two years – the sponsors, individual donors and patrons, Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council, the local performers and the performers who come to us from much further afield, the staff and volunteers, and, most of all, the audiences – indeed everyone who has made the Festival so inspiring and rewarding to be involved with. We very much look forward to seeing you at some of the events in July for this, the final, Winchester Festival. Carol Butler, Festival Director Ginny Sherriff, Literature Consultant The twenty-second Winchester Festival showcases music, talks, drama, visual arts and guided walks in nine days of events in venues across the city.

LITERARY DAYS
AT PITTLEWORTH MANOR
W
hat is it about the English country house that fascinates? Beauty? The desire to understand a different life? but most of all, surely, it is stories: extraordinary stories of real country houses and their occupants and the stories that they have inspired. Pemberley, Manderley,Thornfield, Brideshead: these houses are not backdrops but central characters in some of the most famous novels of English literature. When I was six years old, I came to live at Pittleworth Manor, small but ancient, in the heart of the Test Valley. The old house (full of its own stories) shaped much of my reading. I read Jane Eyre and absolutely refused to go up to the attics alone after dark until my teens. I read Alison Uttley’s A Traveller in Time and never quite lost the hope that I might open a door in Pittleworth and be confronted with a scene from the house’s past. And, of course, I learned the thrill and fear of lying in bed at night and hearing the creak that might be a step on the stair. A Manor of Reading, was born from this sense of thrill: the realisation that reading novels about country houses within a country house could set your imagination and your understanding spinning. I wanted to create an immersive reading experience. What can we learn about atmosphere? What aspects of country house life do we tend to overlook in more conventional and academic readings of novels? I read History at Oxford and did graduate work in English literature at King’s, London and the University of Southampton, where I gained my PhD. I had the wonderful experience of teaching undergraduates. (I would have loved to pursue academic life but I am also a farmer and a mother: something had to give). One of the things that was giving was reading time and I missed the excitement of discussion in seminars. I know I am not alone; there are so many of us who love reading, yet have less and less
time to read, let alone discuss books. Was it possible to create a day of literary discussion in which one could learn, laugh and rediscover without setting homework or reading lists? I reckoned it was. So, last November, eleven brave volunteers gathered around my dining room table to test the theory. I thought it might be more realistic for busy bookworms to take one day out, ‘me time’, occasionally, to discuss old favourites and discover a few new books, rather than daily devoting an hour or so they didn’t have to someone else’s reading list. And, because it was ‘me time’, it must feel like a treat. I love conferences and seminars but not coffee tasting like weedkiller, wine simultaneously threatening to bore through tooth enamel and plastic cup, or suspicious-looking sandwiches. It’s hard to get into the frame of mind to discuss gothic fiction under the glare of strip lighting. So literary days at Pittleworth would be based around good books, good food and good conversation. The fire would roar, except in summer when, if the sun is shining, we might sit out under the yew tree with a glass of pimms. That first literary day, we talked, we argued, we read aloud, shared stories (and, much to the chagrin of my children, we ate all the chocolate meringues). The day was exactly what I hoped it would be.There will be more.Would you be interested? You need bring nothing but enthusiasm for books (though all battered copies of old favourites are welcome), also an enthusiasm for chocolate meringues and their ilk would be helpful. ‘I will have but one mistress here and no master’ Queen Elizabeth the First. What does it mean to be mistress of a country house? How do heroines in novels adapt to this demanding role? In novels, the ‘mistress’ of the country house is as likely to be bullied, bypassed or manipulated, as she is to enjoy her position. She must negotiate her delicate position with the ‘Master’ of the house. And what of that power behind the throne: the housekeeper?
‘I should warn you that this is a very strange house, even I know very little about it.’ Professor Kirk, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, C. S. Lewis. How many of us first discovered the magic and mysteries of the literary country house through children’s books? They were new worlds in their own right and, sometimes, the portal to worlds even further away. They could be beautiful, menacing, life-affirming and very funny. Enjoy a nostalgic day rereading extracts from some old favourites and pondering relationships between the country houses in children’s novels and those in novels for ‘grown-ups’.

MUSIC DIRECTOR LEAVES CHOIR ON A HIGH NOTE
Romsey Choral Society takes a step into a new phase following the end of six transformative years under the baton of Jamie W. Hall. At 29 years old Jamie was already enjoying a fine career as a baritone with the BBC Singers when he took up the role of RCS Musical Director. It was instantly apparent to this young singer that this would be a role that would stretch him, but during the intervening period Jamie has markedly improved the RCS sound both technically and musically, and as word spread his reputation has been instrumental in nearly doubling the number of singers.
FRIDAY 14 JUNE 2019 SHOPLIFTERS (15) After one of their shoplifting sessions, Osamu and his son come across a little girl in the freezing cold. At first reluctant to shelter the girl, Osamu’s wife agrees to take care of her after learning of the hardships she faces. Although the family is poor, barely making enough money to survive through petty crime, they seem to live happily together until an unforeseen incident reveals hidden secrets, testing the bonds that unite them.[In Japanese with English subtitles] Showing at Stockbridge Town Hall SO20 6HE at 7.30pm. Sarah O’Rorke of Hampshire art consultancy, Forton Fine Art, is collaborating with Mayfair Gallery’s Tiffany Panter and Matthew Hall of Panter & Hall, to put on a Summer Exhibition. The Wessex Art Fair will be on from Friday 7th to Sunday 16th June in Hurstbourne Priors. With years of working in the art world, the organisers understand all too well how a piece of art can be transformative to a home. Too often, artwork is the final instalment and yet it can make an impact on a room, it can provide a private corner to stop and reflect, it can bring a room together, it can give a traditional space a contemporary feel or it can be used to make a home welcoming and warm.

To quote Jamie - “Since being appointed to the role in 2013, it’s been that process of examining exactly what it is I want the choir to achieve with each passing programme that has made my work with RCS so rewarding. ”
Tim Hooper. Tim is a versatile, seasoned and well-respected freelance conductor, the longstanding Musical Director of Bournemouth Bach Choir along with many other music appointments.
“In fact, I believe RCS has been central to my own development these past years and I wouldn’t be the musician I am now without them. As I prepare now to move on, to focus more completely on my singing work, I will remember fondly the many wonderful concerts that the choir and I have shared together. There’s a photograph of me during Verdi’s Requiem that expresses more eloquently than I ever could just how much I have loved sharing amazing music with this amazing choir and our ever-appreciated audience. I very much look forward to seeing RCS thrive under their new Musical Director. I have no doubt that there are exciting times ahead for RCS.”
It is with much pride and pleasure that RCS marks the end of Jamie’s time with RCS by inviting him back to sing the role of Elijah. Jamie’s wonderful voice will more than do justice to a work of intense dramatic imagery and remarkable theatrical flair. The actions of the prophet and his interaction with the people around him are the driving force of the piece.
RCS is currently recruiting Jamie’s replacement, and in the meantime the choir will perform Mendelssohn’s Elijah on 6 July in Romsey Abbey with guest conductor
Make time on Saturday 6 July to enjoy this popular oratorio with RCS, Jamie W. Hall, guest conductor Tim Hooper and the City of Southampton Orchestra in Romsey Abbey, where the ancient architecture and wonderful acoustic provides a superb location for this dramatic and emotional tale. A very ‘English’ book by contrast is Lanny by Max Porter. Firmly situated in the English landscape, Porter’s unrivalled imagination gives life to the ancient character of the ‘green-man’, Dead Papa Toothwort, a panlike, tramp-like, shape-shifting essence of nature, and Porter’s joyful use of vocabulary throughout this tale is inspiring. For many lucky children (and grown-ups) the summer could mean a visit to Giffords Circus. Nell Gifford, the founder, has her first children’s picture book out, and Nell & the Circus of Dreams is a richly colourful story of the imagination, with characters recognisable from the real live show. A major upcoming live event sees Winchester-based author Claire Fuller celebrating her most recent book, the dark and mysterious Bitter Orange, with a talk about her work at Stockbridge Town Hall on Wednesday 5th June. Fuller has been described as ‘a latter-day Daphne du Maurier’! Tickets (3 for the price of two for book club members), and her previous books Our Endless Numbered Days (winner of the Desmond Elliott Prize for best debut novel) and Swimming Lessons, can be purchased from The Bookmark in Stockbridge. Happy June reading from The Bookmark. www.thebookmarkstockbridge.co.uk
DENNIS POTTER CLASSIC IN STOCKBRIDGE THIS SUMMER Stockbridge Amateur Dramatic Society will be performing a classic from the 1970s for this summer’s outdoor production. ‘Blue Remembered Hills’ was first performed as a BBC “Play for Today” in 1979 with a cast that included Colin Welland and a young Helen Mirren. All the characters are children played by adult actors. It is set in the Forest of Dean during the Second World War and follows their story for a brief period on one summer day. Funny, profound and deeply disturbing, it has become an accepted classic and part of the GCSE drama syllabus. Most of the action is in the forest which makes it very suitable for an outdoor performance. The performance will be in the beautiful garden of the Burrow in Longstock on July 11th to 13th and will be preceded by live music. Tickets will be on sale by the end of May. For more details go to www.stockbridgeamdrams.org.uk.

THE FORUM’S BEAUTY EDITOR TALKS TO AWARD WINNING BEAUTY THERAPIST DORTHE THOMAS ABOUT THE BEST TREATMENTS TO HAVE BEFORE HITTING THE BEACH. You may be one of those rare women who’s perfectly groomed at all stages of the year and requires nothing more than a spritz of summer perfume before heading on holiday. If not, you've come to the right place. Wintry feet will need more than a lick of paint to sort themselves out for summer. This most abused body part needs love and attention far further in advance than anywhere else - three months before you go away is when you should treat yourself to a pedicure. As for the paint job, a Gel polish always lasts longer, so book this a few days before you go. If you plan to go for a facial before your holiday, now is the time. 'It's good to have a facial containing microdermabrasion before a holiday,' explains Dorthe. 'The pores are thoroughly cleaned and massage drains any excess fluid, aiding circulation and leaving the skin firm, radiant and glowing with no dead

skin. A great base to start with before your nice, even holiday tan.' The least glamorous and most painful part of anyone’s beauty prep – Hair Removal - should be saved for at least three days before you go. “Ensure you hop on the treatment couch 72 hours before you jet off ” advises Dorthe. If you’re planning a spray tan, it’s important to save that for afterwards. 'Don’t set foot in the tanning booth until at least 24 hours after your wax as the pores will still be open, and don’t forget that freshly waxed skin tans more evenly too.' Two days before - get a manicure... ‘It's best to have a manicure a couple of days before your holiday as this will ensure it lasts for the duration,’ says Dorthe. A Gel polish will give you shiny colour for at least two weeks and is perfect to have before a holiday. 'Lash extensions are the best way to streamline your summer holiday make-up. They are waterproof and look great all day long – you can swim in them, party in them, and don’t need to remove them before bed. We recommend getting your lashes and brows done just a few days before you go, so as to ensure they look great for the duration of your holiday.' Dorthe is offering Forum readers a Gel Manicure and Pedicure for just £50 this June. Call 01264 748300 or email info@ dorthethomasspa.com.

TRANSFORMATIONAL HEALTHCARE Hello, my name is Dr Nina Fuller-Shavel and I am the director of Synthesis Clinic, a Functional and Integrative medicine practice opening in Kings Somborne. As an NHS doctor, I found that our current model of medicine works well for acute problems, but it may be poorly designed to turn the rising tide of chronic disease that is overwhelming the NHS with a drug bill in the billions of pounds. I knew from my degrees in science and nutrition that there is more to health than ‘a pill for every symptom’ method. In my own clinical practice, every day I could see the incredible impact of using root-cause non-pharmaceutical approaches in transforming my clients’ health. Our new clinic is based on the Functional and Integrative Medicine model. This is a unique approach to healthcare that combines conventional medicine with lifestyle-based approaches and evidenceinformed complementary healthcare. Our multidisciplinary team includes integrative and functional medicine doctors and psychology, nutrition, acupuncture, physiotherapy, movement, yoga and mindfulness experts. We are all not only immensely passionate about health but also about truly listening to our clients and working together to motivate and inspire. If you or your family are struggling with your health, please contact us to see how we can help. Tel: 020 3051 6471 email: hello@synthesisclinic.co.uk synthesisclinic.co.uk
TAKE THAT’S MARK OWEN BACKS RELEASE OF CHARITY SINGLE HELPING SALISBURY HOSPICE One of Take That’s most popular live hits is being re-released as a fundraising tribute to the mum of it’s cowriter - and their huge fanbase is being encouraged to support it. Hold Up A Light has long been a fans’ favourite at the band’s gigs - and next month a reworked version comes out as a single to support the hospice that cared for Linda Brown who died from cancer last year. Her son Jamie first penned the track with TT’s Mark Owen, Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, Jason Orange and fellow writer Ben Mark. Now Mark and Jamie Norton have recorded a stripped-back update of Hold Up A Light, alongside pupils from Grasmere Primary in North London including Jamie’s sons Ned, nine, and Miller, six. All profits are being split evenly between the Salisbury Hospice Charity, and the Stoke Newington school’s FROGS appeal to build an outdoor play space. Take That’s Mark said “When my good friend and collaborator, Jamie Norton, asked me to be involved in rerecording ‘Hold Up A Light’ to raise money for the hospice where his mum spent her final weeks, I absolutely wanted to help in any way that I could. Since then this project has grown and grown and I’d like to wish him the best of luck with his first marathon run, and hope the project raises lots of pennies for the associated charities.” 'Hold Up A Light' will be available from Friday April 26 on all download and streaming services. With the hospice relying on charitable donations in order to be able to operate, it’s a cause that’s both deeply personal to Jamie, and vitally important to numerous families. www.salisburyhospicecharity.org.uk

Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects timecarpets it takes to clean working around furniture, ratherMASONRY than moving it. • PAINT JOBS Have anythe three That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning and your three under it and replacing it back into piece position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is PLASTERING moving large pieces of freshened furniture likeup bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured • FENCE BUILDING suite for to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the PATIO WORK just £167! situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices.•3. WALLPAPER HANGING Are there any ‘hidden’ extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual FURNITURE ASSEMBLY prices you will pay.

NEW FOREST SHOW TO DONATE ALL REVENUE FROM CHILD TICKET SALES TO THE SAMANTHA AND FLORENCE BAILEY BURSARY The New Forest and Hampshire County Show is donating all proceeds from child ticket sales at the 2019 Show to the Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary. The bursary was established in 2018 in memory of Samantha Bailey and her unborn daughter Florence both of whom passed away unexpectedly in January 2018. Samantha had been heavily involved with the Cattle Section of the New Forest Show for many years. The 2019 New Forest Show is taking place on 30th, 31st July and 1st August 2019 at New Park, Brockenhurst. Tickets are available to purchase online now from the New Forest Show website. Sam was a young farmer and estate agent living in Tiptoe, Sway. Following in the footsteps of her grandparents and mother she led a wonderful life breeding and showing the Sandlea herd of Charolais cattle. At just 34 years of age Sam tragically fell ill on 16th January 2018 and died eight days after losing their daughter Florence late in the pregnancy. Sam was also a longstanding member of the New Forest Show’s Cattle Committee. The New Forest Agricultural Show Society set up a bursary in their memory. The Samantha and Florence Bailey Bursary aims to support young people in agricultural education, with two main aims: • Fund students attending agricultural college, allowing them to begin a career in agriculture. • Pay for applicants to attend short courses that will benefit their career in agriculture The bursary is supported and administered by The New Forest Agricultural Show Society. The amount of subsidy provided will depend on the money raised throughout the year. All children aged 5-15 can enter the 2019 New Forest Show for just £1. Children aged 4 and under can enter for free. All adult and senior tickets purchased online via the New Forest Show website before 23rd July will receive a 15% advance ticket discount. New Forest Show tickets are also available to purchase in person at three locations: Pot Pourri in Brockenhurst, Christchurch Information Centre and Ringwood Town Council. Tickets for the New Forest and Hampshire County Show are available to buy online now from the New Forest Show website. All adult and senior tickets purchased online before 23rd July will receive a 15% advance ticket discount https://www.newforestshow.co.uk/tickets/ More information about the Samantha and Florence Bailey bursary including ways to donate can be found on the New Forest Show website https://www.newforestshow.co.uk/samantha-and-florencebailey/

Founders, artist-designer couple, Michael and Lucy Vaughan, have always been united by a collective passion for art and antiques.Together, they bring their artistic eye, discerning sense of style and meticulous attention to detail to the heart of the company. Michael and Lucy drive Vaughan’s vision and artist-led philosophy, providing direction and guidance to their in-house design team, where every product is designed exclusively. Traditional and authentic manufacturing methods are central to Vaughan’s designs, and products are made, assembled, or finished in Britain. Using the very finest materials, such as solid cast brass as the lamps’ base substance (even when plating with nickel), ensures that Vaughan’s products have a special depth and richness of finish. Although Vaughan takes its inspiration from a wealth of styles and eras, from Regency to Modernism, almost every piece contains their signature aesthetic. Clean lines, natural materials and a purity of form make up their renowned design philosophy, and allow their products to stand the test of time. www.vaughandesigns.com Vaughan House, Moorside Road,Winchester, SO23 7SA Find us on Instagram, Houzz, Pintrest, Facebook and Twitter
