Happy Kitchens were recommended to us by neighbours & within a few minutes of meeting Ben we knew that we wanted him & his team to work on our Kitchen. Ben visited us on 2 occasions so we could view the potential options in both daylight and also at night to ensure the colour scheme worked for us. Ben offered his expert advice without once feeling pressured and was more than happy to accommodate us when we wanted to change our mind on a few final touches. A pleasent surprise was that they fitted all our new appliances without any additional charge. The team who completed the job were a pleasure to deal with & worked exceptionally hard ensuring the kitchen was completed on schedule, the whole team treated our home with the utmost respect & we cannot be more pleased with the result.

ROMSEY MAKE YOUR MARK PANEL FINDS PERMANENT HOME AT KING JOHN’S HOUSE
PICTURED WITH THE PANEL ARE, L TO R: MARK UDALL, GENERAL MANAGER, KING JOHN’S HOUSE; RUTH FACEY, ARTIST; YINNON EZRA, MBE, MA, FRSA, CHAIR TVAF
The Romsey Make Your Mark panel created at the Romsey Show by members of the public has now found its permanent home at King John’s House and this was formally unveiled on Thursday 30 May by Yinnon Ezra, Chair Test Valley Arts Foundation, Ruth Facey – artist behind the project and Mark Udall, General Manager of King John’s House and Museum. Ruth Facey, local artist had the original idea to provide a participatory community art event and lasting record to commemorate TVAF’s 25 years of activity. Ruth produced small panels

of recycled copper and also assembled the necessary tools for mark making: a variety of hammers and steel blocks. The activity was open to anyone in the vicinity of The Bus of Many Things at the Romsey Show, Mottisfont Abbey and the Andover Festival of Motoring to come along and have a go. Overall more than 200 people, aged between 3 and 80 did just that to produce their individual textured panels. These were then assembled to form 3 panels, one for each event.
Mark Udall, General Manager, King John’s House said “King John’s House and Museum was delighted to receive one of the “Make Your Mark” panels on 30th May 2019 from the Test Valley Arts Foundation (TVAF) for permanent display. It is very appropriate that the panel finds its home at the House. King John’s House is re-imagining itself as a well established focal point for Heritage, the Arts, Culture and Education (HACE) in Romsey and the surrounding area and so it is a natural location for this celebration of a very successful community arts project. Acronym lovers might recognise hace as the Spanish verb ‘to make’. Another good reason for “Make Your Mark’ to reside at the House.” King John’s House has a unique feature, which draws visitors from all over the world. Etched into its original medieval plaster are heraldic and other graffiti left by the entourage of King Edward I, who visited the Abbess of Romsey Abbey in 1306, and may have lodged at what we now call King John’s House. One reason people leave graffiti is a cry of “I was here”. Literally they “Make their Mark” for posterity. Community contributors to the “Make your Mark” project have made their claim of “I was here” and now a celebration of their marks sits in our collection alongside an example of their 700 year old precursors. www.testvalleyarts.org

LITERARY DAYS
AT PITTLEWORTH MANOR
W
hat is it about the English country house that fascinates? Beauty? The desire to understand a different life? but most of all, surely, it is stories: extraordinary stories of real country houses and their occupants and the stories that they have inspired. Pemberley, Manderley,Thornfield, Brideshead: these houses are not backdrops but central characters in some of the most famous novels of English literature. When I was six years old, I came to live at Pittleworth Manor, small but ancient, in the heart of the Test Valley. The old house (full of its own stories) shaped much of my reading. I read Jane Eyre and absolutely refused to go up to the attics alone after dark until my teens. I read Alison Uttley’s A Traveller in Time and never quite lost the hope that I might open a door in Pittleworth and be confronted with a scene from the house’s past. And, of course, I learned the thrill and fear of lying in bed at night and hearing the creak that might be a step on the stair. A Manor of Reading, was born from this sense of thrill: the realisation that reading novels about country houses within a country house could set your imagination and your understanding spinning. I wanted to create an immersive reading experience. What can we learn about atmosphere? What aspects of country house life do we tend to overlook in more conventional and academic readings of novels? I read History at Oxford and did graduate work in English literature at King’s, London and the University of Southampton, where I gained my PhD. I had the wonderful experience of teaching undergraduates. (I would have loved to pursue academic life but I am also a farmer and a mother: something had to give). One of the things that was giving was reading time and I missed the excitement of discussion in seminars. I know I am not alone; there are so many of us who love reading, yet have less and less
time to read, let alone discuss books. Was it possible to create a day of literary discussion in which one could learn, laugh and rediscover without setting homework or reading lists? I reckoned it was. So, last November, eleven brave volunteers gathered around my dining room table to test the theory. I thought it might be more realistic for busy bookworms to take one day out, ‘me time’, occasionally, to discuss old favourites and discover a few new books, rather than daily devoting an hour or so they didn’t have to someone else’s reading list. And, because it was ‘me time’, it must feel like a treat. I love conferences and seminars but not coffee tasting like weedkiller, wine simultaneously threatening to bore through tooth enamel and plastic cup, or suspicious-looking sandwiches. It’s hard to get into the frame of mind to discuss gothic fiction under the glare of strip lighting. So literary days at Pittleworth would be based around good books, good food and good conversation. The fire would roar, except in summer when, if the sun is shining, we might sit out under the yew tree with a glass of pimms. That first literary day, we talked, we argued, we read aloud, shared stories (and, much to the chagrin of my children, we ate all the chocolate meringues). The day was exactly what I hoped it would be.There will be more.Would you be interested? You need bring nothing but enthusiasm for books (though all battered copies of old favourites are welcome), also an enthusiasm for chocolate meringues and their ilk would be helpful. Friday Literary Lunch: Secret Gardens, Secret Worlds: The Country House in Children's Books
The Interior of the Country House
Books to discuss include: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, The Secret Garden, The Just William series, The Little White Horse ‘I should warn you that this is a very strange house, even I know very little about it.’ Professor Kirk, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, C. S. Lewis. How many of us first discovered the magic and mysteries of the literary country house through children’s books? They were new worlds in their own right and, sometimes, the portal to worlds even further away. They could be beautiful, menacing, life-affirming and very funny. Enjoy a nostalgic day rereading extracts from some old favourites and pondering relationships between the country houses in children’s novels and those in novels for ‘grown-ups’.
Novels to consider include: Rebecca, Jane Eyre, The Portrait of a Lady. The rooms inside literary country houses create some of the most memorable images in literature. How do authors tackle the task of describing the interiors of country houses? How do those interiors reflect and affect the characters? And why are we as readers so effected by these imaginary rooms and the things within them? This subject will enable us to consider the things in literature a little more widely: what do the histories of objects bring to the novel?

HENDY WESSEX HEARTBEAT CYCLE SPORTIVE - SUNDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER Hendy Group is urging people across the region to switch from engine to pedal power later this year as it backs a popular cycling event. The company has signed up as the official sponsor of the Hendy Wessex Heartbeat Cycle Sportive, which takes place in the Test Valley in September. The event, which is now in its fourth year, aims to raise thousands of pounds for Wessex Heartbeat. The Hendy Wessex Heartbeat Cycle Sportive will take place on September 8th and feature a 70-mile and 40-mile route. For the first time ever, the event will also feature a 10mile ride, which is suitable for families and individuals. 10-mile distance was a big draw for Hendy to support the event. “We’re huge supporters of the sport of cycling and anything that encourages more people to get into it is a great thing,” he said. “A 10 mile is a great option for those who are taking part in their first cycling event and we hope it inspires them to take part in many more.” Hendy has even enlisted the help of Olympic gold medallist Dani Rowe MBE to back the event. Dani, who has a long association with Hendy Group as one of her sponsors, said: “Cycling is such a fantastic sport and I’m so pleased to see Hendy and Wessex Heartbeat putting on an event that will allow local people to enjoy it while raising money for a worthy cause. The message is clear – get on your bike and get involved!”
The Sportive route takes the cyclists through Romsey over to Winchester, Stockbridge and Broughton where the 70 and 40-mile routes split. The longer route travels over to Salisbury and the shorter 40-mile route travels back to Romsey via East Tytherley. The 10-mile route weaves around the quiet lanes of Wellow and Sherfield English. The route will be arrowed and marshalled, with support from Cycle World along the route, as well as refreshment stops with support from Hildon Water and Asda’s Totton branch. John concluded: “With the support of so many local companies, it’s set to be a great event and we’d urge cyclists to sign up quickly to ensure they get a place.” Hendy’s move to support the cycling event is part of its partnership with Wessex Heartbeat, which has been extended for 2019. their bold move to allow nature to take the reins has been hugely successful in reversing the cataclysmic decline in certain flora and fauna species once common in the British landscape. It is a hopeful story of the restoration of the land and its wildlife.
We find ourselves in a state of Global Climate Emergency, with the natural world under threat from melting ice caps to the mass extinction of pollinating bees and insects, from global warming to rising sea levels. But still with millions of human mouths to feed, how can we reconcile the sometimes polar needs and demands of agriculture on the one hand, with the sustainable ecological solutions posed on the other? Can they indeed come together and work in unison to create a stable world for our future? How can agricultural conventions adapt to the emerging realisation that the old ways are unsustainable, and is re-wilding the answer - a workable solution to counteract the decades of chemical over-use, intensive mono-cultural farming and de-forestation? Isabella Tree will open the discussion with an illustrated talk on the re-wilding project undertaken by her and her husband Charlie Burrell, at their home on the Knepp Estate in East Sussex, nearly twenty years ago. OSTEOPATHY AND WOMEN'S HEALTH
To achieve a permanent improvement you have to change your patterns of movement. This is achieved through body awareness.
“I sometimes leak a little when I pick up the kids, exercise or sneeze, but my friends do too, so that’s normal and to be expected, right?” Pelvic pain and dysfunction is very common, but it’s not normal. It should never be accepted as part of a women’s journey through life, be that during puberty, pregnancy or the menopause.
HERE ARE A HANDFUL OF TIPS TO GET YOU THINKING OUTSIDE THE PELVIS:
Leaking urine, painful sex, prolapse, abdominal muscle separation, recurrent infection, period pains, irregular cycles, infertility, mood swings, low energy, bloating, reduced libido, haemorrhoids and irritable bowel can affect women at any stage in their lives as a result of poor movement patterns, hormonal imbalances, sport or fitness training, childbirth, trauma or surgery. At best these issues are often treated using basic, temporary fixes, sometimes creating long term problems. At worst, they are dismissed entirely. To fully address pelvic dysfunction we must consider the ‘when’, ‘why’ and ‘how’, not just the ‘what’. To do this we have to apply a total-body approach rather than just recommending a single corrective exercise, such as the Kegel, or focusing on a single area.
WINCHESTER HAT FAIR CELEBRATES 45 YEARS!
PHOTO BY ADRIENNE PHOTOGRAPHY (QUATUOR STOMP AT HAT FAIR 2017)
This year’s Hat Fair, the UK’s longest continually running Outdoor Arts Festival, takes place in Winchester from Friday 5 July to Sunday 7 July 2019. Celebrating 45 years this year and taking its name from its busking heritage, the free three-day festival brings the very best in international street performance,
• Pelvic Floor Exercises aren’t Enough The chances are, that if you have only ever done just Pelvic Floor (PF) exercises, you are still experiencing symptoms. Learn new ways to effectively strengthen your PF. • Educate yourself The PF is part of your core; continuous with your abdominal muscles, diaphragm, spinal muscles and sacrum. Therefore exercise needs to target the core (and more) to influence the PF. • Breathe Easy Learning how to breathe into the lower ribs, relax the shoulders and fully utilise the diaphragm improves the pressure within the abdomen and off-loads the PF. • Don’t slouch Don’t sit in a C-shaped curve, sit up and off your tailbone. This allows the tailbone to move backwards, creating space and improved tone in the PF. • Feel the Bulge in the Basement All muscles need to be long and strong to be healthy, including the PF. A short, tight theatre, dance and circus-inspired events to the city. Hat Fair will run throughout the city centre on Friday and Saturday with Sunday’s festivities taking place at the North Walls Recreation Ground, a short walk from the High Street. The festival kicks off in style at noon on Friday 5 July as hundreds of school children parade through the streets in the Hat Fair Carnival, so come along to join in the fun! Local acts will pop up throughout the city centre on Saturday and will take to the People’s Stage at the North Walls Recreation Ground on Sunday. Performing companies from the University of Winchester will battle it out in the Top Hat Competition to win mentoring with Andrew Loretto, Hat Fair Director, and a prized slot in the programme of Hat Fair 2020. Last year’s
PF is weak, so it is vital to learn how to relax it too. As you inhale, allow the PF to relax and gently bulge, like lowering the PF beyond the ‘ground floor’ and into the ‘basement’. As you exhale engage and lift the PF.
• Stay Active Finding activities that engage the core and the glute (buttock) muscles are key. Try brisk walking with gradients and a variety of terrains, and regain the lost art of squatting. Begin with low impact movement and progress from there. • Avoid Straining and Constipation Chronic coughing, constipation and being overweight all increases the pressure on the PF. Check your nutrition and general health. Not all women need to strengthen their pelvic floor. Most need the opposite, as they’ve been gripping, lifting and bracing for so long, but until you are fully assessed, it’s just guesswork. You are how you eat, sleep, move and relax. By taking back control and responsibility of all these areas in your life, you can learn how to heal your pelvic dysfunction now and for your future. MEET THE TEST VALLEY BUSINESS AWARDS 2019 SILVER SPONSORS
WYKEHAM GALLERY - YOUNG ART PROJECT This schools art project that the Wykeham runs was a great success last year and is now in its second year, having expanded to two more schools in the area.
LEFT TO RIGHT - ANDREW BULPITT (BULPITT PRINT), NEIL RAYNSFORD (LANGDOWNS DFK), DAVID SMITH (MYDDELTON & MAJOR)
With judging in full swing and the Gold Sponsors busily considering more 200 entries across 6 categories, now is the time to meet the Awards’ Silver Sponsors. These generous businesses represent a cross-section of some of Test Valley's most established and inspiring companies from right across the borough. Bringing businesses together to celebrate their achievements through Test Valley Business Awards is made possible only by the support of our fantastic and longstanding supporters. The Test Valley Business Awards 2019 Silver Sponsors are: • Bulpitt Print Ltd. • Langdowns DFK • Myddelton & Major
Last year Gerald Dodson chose a piece of artwork from the two local schools. Farleigh School last year was a very impressive sculpture of an Eagle which the student chose to do having been inspired by one of the gallery artist’s Karl Martens. The other piece from a student at Test Valley School was a beautifully executed architectural painting which was bought by a client of the gallery. The student was elated and this moment we are sure will be a lasting memory for him. This is exactly what Gerald wanted, which is to prove that the possibilities are infinite. This year we will be showing two pieces of artwork from Farleigh and Test Valley School again, which will feature in our Stockbridge High Street windows during the first week of our Summer Show, 19th July – 26th July and we are also delighted to announce two newcomers to the gallery art project who are Peter Symonds College and Cheam School, who will be showing their chosen pieces from 26th July – 3rd August 2019. Please come and see what these young budding artists of tomorrow are creating. www.wykehamgallery.co.uk
David Smith of Myddelton & Major said of their support of the Test Valley Business Awards: "Myddelton & Major have been Silver Sponsors of the Test Valley Business Awards for several years now, and are delighted to be supporting the Awards during their 15th year of celebrating business excellence. "Local business, and supporting local businesses to achieve their goals, is important to us and an ethos we're proud to share with TVBAwards."

It is a great way of shining a light particularly on the many new and small businesses in the region, all doing interesting and valuable work, but often out of sight. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance delivers an advanced Critical Care Team to sick and injured people in our region when they need it most. Available both day and night, 365 days a year, the Air Ambulance Critical Care Team is called out many times a day to attend road traffic collisions, sporting accidents, collapses and many other incidents. Highly skilled crews of doctors, paramedics and pilots can be at the scene of an incident within minutes, ready to deliver the same level of care that you would expect from a hospital emergency department.
Davina's has the largest up-to-date selection of high quality designer wear and ladies fashion clothing, if you are looking for a Mother of the Bride/Groom outfit, special occasion wear, cruise wear, prom dresses, or simply an addition to your seasonal wardrobe, then Davina's is for you.
Musical director Bruce Randall explains the connection: “One of our singers is a trustee of HIOWAA and she mentioned that it costs £15,000 a day to keep the service operational. What surprised us is that the Charity relies entirely upon the generosity of individuals and organisations to help save lives. Our concert is a broad mixture of sacred and secular music and there should be something for everyone. All the proceeds will go to HIOWAA. Let’s all help keep the service going.”

Maintenance
Here’s a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say ‘carpet’ what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don’t quibble if the areas are a little larger - it’s all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects timecarpets it takes to clean working around furniture, ratherMASONRY than moving it. • PAINT JOBS Have anythe three That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning and your three under it and replacing it back into piece position. What we don’t price into the job at these discount prices is PLASTERING moving large pieces of freshened furniture likeup bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured • FENCE BUILDING suite for to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tvs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the PATIO WORK just £167! situation and inevitable we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices.•3.
