LITERARY LUNCHES

AT PITTLEWORTH MANOR

T

here was a moment, a couple of weeks ago, when I knew that Pittleworth literary lunches were really doing what I had hoped they would do. As everyone got up to leave at the end of the day, one guest said that she was longing to read The Little White Horse (this was after our children’s literature day) and immediately another guest leant her her her own copy. That is what I wanted: people going away excited to read books, rather than arriving cursing internally because of the hours they had to waste on someone else’s idea of a good book. And yes, you can have fun and fascinating discussions about literature without having to do homework before hand; I give a short talk and we read extracts on the day and comment on them. It is hard to believe that it is nearly nine months since my first brave volunteers rolled up for a day here at Pittleworth to road test the idea of literary lunches — discussing country house novels in a country house setting — and I am even more grateful to them now than I was then. I also know now what I guessed at then; so many of us are fascinated by the country houses in novels. Manderley, Pemberley, Thornfield Hall and all the rest of them are the core of so many favourite reads and, talking of favourite reads, there really are a lot of us Rebecca aficionados out there, aren’t there! It has been a real joy to welcome so many people to Pittleworth, especially when new faces start to become familiar faces. We’ve held days based round varied themes in country house novels, including the gothic and the country house, women and the country house and children’s books and the country house. We’ve read bits of everything from The Mysteries of Udolpho to Just William by way of Middlemarch. As I think back over the days held so far, the thing I remember most is the laughter. ‘There are gusts of laughter coming from

the dining room whenever I go past’ another member of the household commented. Sometimes the veneer of gracious living at Pittleworth has cracked a little. Occasionally, as we talk, a spirited re-enactment of the charge of the Light Brigade seems to be taking place almost overhead — and I know that the children are home from toddler group— and more than once our Newfoundland dog has attempted to put in an appearance (perhaps she wants to offer up her thoughts on Pilot, the Newfoundland in Jane Eyre). I have learned so much from my guests’ insights and the experiences they bring to the novels. When I started to think about events based around ‘country house novels’, novels where the country house is not simply a setting but virtually a character in its own right, I did wondered if there would be enough novels and enough themes. Now I feel spoilt for choice and will be spending the summer break reading my way through some of the recommendations people have given me. And this Autumn we will have haunted country houses (in retrospect, rereading The Woman in Black at 2 o’clock in the morning in a dark panelled room was a bad decision). There will be exquisitely furnished (and not so exquisite) country houses, when we look at the interiors of country houses and how novelists create them. And if you think that a Pittleworth literary lunch might be for you but aren’t sure, why not come along on October 4th? How often do you get to help your local church by being read aloud to? The Interior of the Country House

The Haunted Country House

Novels to consider include: Rebecca, Jane Eyre, The Portrait of a Lady.

Novels to consider include: The Portrait of a Lady, The Woman in Black, The Little Stranger.

The rooms inside literary country houses create some of the most memorable images in literature.

What (in literary terms!) are ghosts and how do novelists use them? What extra dimension does the country house bring to the subject of the supernatural?

How do authors tackle the task of describing the interiors of country houses? How do those interiors reflect and affect the characters? And why are we as readers so effected by these imaginary rooms and the things within them? This subject will enable us to consider the things in literature a little more widely: what do the histories of objects bring to the novel?

Pittleworth itself used to be considered a haunted house: giving us an opportunity to consider how the practicalities of living in a country house contributed to the idea of the haunted house.

Children of the Country House

The Country House Party

Novels to consider include: The Pursuit of Love, Moondial, The Turn of the Screw, Little Lord Fauntleroy.

Novels to consider include: The Pursuit of Love, The Rising Tide, Mansfield Park, The Shooting Party.

The children who lived in country houses, both in novels and in reality, can be a very ‘unchildlike’ lot: precocious, tragic, frightening or sickmakingly angelic. This is unsurprising, given the strange lives that they led, growing up surrounded by pampered veneration, (benign?) neglect, or almost sadistic treatment, among other experiences. Unsurprisingly, their situation has proved a gift to novelists. When are they victims and when tormentors? How much do they know about the adults around them? How are these young characters affected by their often extraordinary lives in country houses?

Really one wonders why anyone accepts an invitation to a country house party: at least if they read novels. The high possibility of being seduced, ruined financially or socially, robbed or murdered seem rather a high price to pay for the glamour (hopefully), the grandeur and the chance to participate in the upper class ritual par excellence. Yet still, like lambs to the slaughter, some of the best-loved characters in literature go and, judging by the interest in the coming festivities at Downton Abbey, we follow them greedily through the pages. Why? Come and discuss over the champagne …

4/10/2019 ‘A Handful of Readings’ This is an evening event at Pittleworth Manor to raise funds for the churches of St Mary’s, Broughton and St James’s, Bossington. Enjoy listening to a selection of short readings on the theme of ‘The English Country House in Literature’, next to the fire with a glass of something warming, followed by a light buffet supper. There will be an opportunity to view Pittleworth’s historic Tudor murals. All proceeds to the churches. Tickets £32.50 each, or £55 for two. Places strictly limited due to space, please email info@pittleworthmamor.co.uk to book a space and arrange payment.

Why not invite friends who are not lucky enough to live in Hampshire to come and join in the fun? The festival is organised and run entirely by a small group of enthusiastic volunteers who all give up their time for free. We are grateful to them and to the many businesses, organisations and individuals for their goodwill and generosity, particularly our lead sponsor, Winchester College for its ongoing support and for opening its doors to so many wonderful events this year. The festival’s future, however, depends on being able to meet its running costs. We are delighted to announce that Professor Martin Biddle will host our special fundraising event on the eve of the festival with a talk Why did the Anglo-Saxons build a church in the middle of a ruined Roman City? ALRESFORD SHOW

TICHBORNE PARK, ALRESFORD

A

lifetime of visiting the Alresford Agricultural Show has taught me that there are two ways to enjoy a day out at Hampshire’s – and possibly England’s – finest farming show. The first is to enjoy an all action day: turn up at the stunning Tichborne Park on the first Saturday in September and go flat out, hell-for-leather, and do as much as you can. Enjoy a session on the climbing wall, get stuck into the circus workshop (with fire show!), cuddle a beagle, and cheer on the Donkey Derby and the Pony Club relays. You can eat and drink your way round the many refreshment stands – perfect for a refuel before you head out for a boogie to the music, brought to you this year once again by the superb Alresford Uke Jam and the Thomas Lord Old Gits (who have solemnly promised to keep the noise down this year). And when (and ONLY when) your food has gone down a bit, round things off with a turn on the bungee trampoline, and then treat yourself to a 99 flake on the way out. The second way to enjoy the Show is more sedate: yes, you arrive early at Tichborne Park, but you stroll in a more leisurely fashion round the ground. You drop in on a stand, shake a few hands, have a cup of something, exchange a

friendly insult or two (or ten), and move on to the next one, shaking more hands on the way. Drool over the farm machinery that the dealers have brought – at huge effort and expense - from far and wide. Enjoy the fantastic range of farm produce on show: the livestock (both mundane and exotic), and the arable produce. There’s food and drink to suit a slow day, too, with cheeses, honey, breads and charcuteries, and a huge range of wines and exotic spirits to match. Never forget the inner peace to be found during a session in the horticultural tent, or from maxing your credit card in the craft marquee. Oh, and even a slow day deserves a 99 flake on the way home. Do it either way – it’s up to you. But make sure you’re here to join us farmers as we welcome you all into our world on September 7th at Tichborne Park. We might join you for a boogie or an ice cream – but we'll give the bungee trampoline a miss, if that’s OK with you. Tickets available on-line, www.alresfordshow.co.uk, or from Six West, Alresford, Mole Country Stores, Winchester Ticket Prices: Adults £15, Senior £13, Children 11-16 £5. Buy before 31st August and save £2 per ticket.

WINCHESTER AUTO FEST – A NEW CHARITY MOTORING AND MUSIC EVENT FOR THE TEST VALLEY

Sutton Scotney. We hope that Auto Fest will be back next year and become an annual event for the community and motoring enthusiasts in aid of a great cause.”

Over five hundred locals, classic car fans and their families partied the night away at Winchester Auto Barn on Saturday 13th July at their inaugural Winchester Auto Fest. Motoring enthusiasts came to enjoy the eclectic array of classic and interesting sports cars on display at the countryside garage, including a rare 1972 Lamborghini Muira SV, a 1967 275 GTB/4 Ferrari, a De Lorean, a 1966 Mustang, a 1943 Dodge Truck and a MacLaren 650S to name just a few. Gemma Rolfe, Fundraising Manager at Naomi House, said “Thank you so much to everyone at Auto Barn especially for the hard work and Saturday’s events in aid of Naomi House & Jacksplace and for allowing us to be part of the evening.”

Held at the new-look Army Flying Museum on 12th September, this year’s Gala Dinner & Awards Ceremony marks a milestone 15 years of celebrating local business excellence; seeing up to 200 local business representatives gather together to find out who of the 18 finalists will be crowned the 2019 winners! With ample opportunities to network, the Gala Dinner & Awards Ceremony will also see local caterers, Michelin award-winning McCrimmon & Reid, serve up a sumptuous 3 course meal with free welcome drink provided on arrival. The 2019 Gala Dinner & Awards Ceremony is supported by Special Sponsors Barratt Homes - Britain’s biggest housebuilder by volume. Jon Green, managing director of Barratt Homes, commented: “Supporting the communities we operate in is very important to us and we’re delighted to sponsor the Test Valley Business Awards. We have seen firsthand some of the exciting and innovative work being done by firms in the region and we look forward to celebrating their successes on the awards evening.”

There were performances throughout the evening on the stage under the stars from Rock band The Reason, Blues Band The 663 Squadron and Acoustic guitar virtuoso Jake Morley. Guests were treated to tastings of some of Burgundy’s fine wines and artisan French cheeses. Whilst the younger visitors enjoyed the Boaz Project’s Angry Birds stall and free face painting. Niall Holden, garage owner said “I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our first Winchester Auto Fest at the weekend. We couldn’t have asked for a better day for it and the turnout, tunes and atmosphere were first class. The event was launched to celebrate our first year at the garage and we are delighted to be able to donate a substantial amount raised on the night to Naomi House and Jacksplace in

Following the announcement of finalists on 19th July, seeing over 200 entrants whittled down to a shortlist of just 18 hopefuls over 6 categories, tickets are now on sale for the Test Valley Business Awards 2019 Gala Dinner & Awards Ceremony.

During the event, there will be a presentation from, and collection for, Jane Scarth House as Charity of the Year. Winchester Auto Barn holds regular classic car breakfast meetings and also offers MOTs and servicing at competitive rates for all types of modern and classic vehicles. Their next meet is on Saturday 17th August from 9am12pm. Tel: 01962 677776 www.winchesterautobarn.com Winchester Auto Barn Sutton Scotney, Winchester, SO21 3NS

THE ECO WORRIER “Y ou shouldn’t leave your engine running – it’s bad for the environment.” A silver-haired, diminutive woman thrust her face closer and cocked her head towards the parked car.

True enough, her car was still burbling away. Between the radio’s jolly offering and the fan heater blasting warmth over her chilly passenger, she’d not noticed the engine noise when she hopped out and run into the shop to buy a paper. The car usually switched itself off as soon as she put it into neutral and took her foot off the clutch. Somewhat wrong-footed, she struggled to explain the failure of her vehicle’s environmentally friendly (if occasionally irritating) feature to the elderly lady currently fixing her with a dubious eye. There was probably some techno-reason why the car hadn’t done its eco-thing, but the accusation of being less than environmentally friendly made her review her own planet-saving impact. For one, she assiduously went through her rubbish to separate out the recyclables to be deposited in the brown bin, trooping to the bottle bank with her washed glassware too.

When she remembered, which was most of the time, she shopped using her own bags ‘for life’. Although she anti-bac-ed them regularly as she’d read somewhere they could harbour deadly bacteria and, really, bags ‘for death’ didn’t have quite the same jaunty ring.. Deliberately not buying cheap, virtually disposable clothing, she preferred to spend her money in charity shops and car boot sales when her

wardrobe needed a makeover; surely something of a win-win for everyone? But truthfully, as just a well-meaning, ordinary human, she found trying to be less of a blight on Mother Earth something of a minefield. Here’s one - Old Car versus New Car. An ‘Old Car’ might not be so clean to run, but scrapping it or trading it in for a ‘New Car’ that used goodness only knows how much energy and raw materials to manufacture. Which car takes the chequered eco-friendly flag? And here’s another - plastic bags versus paper ones. Did she read somewhere that one supermarket was going to offer paper grocery bags? But didn’t she also read that the production and transportation of paper bags contributes more to global warming than plastic ones? Where had she seen that – and was it true? Reaching for her ‘phone she jabbed and scrolled feverishly, searching. And if some plastic bags were bio-degradable, she wondered, why weren’t they all? Surely then there’d be a chance they’d naturally disintegrate before reaching the oceans where turtles and whales could eat them. Then there was palm oil. A viral advert last Christmas rather poignantly highlighted the deforestation caused by palm oil plantations. That supermarket had vowed to ban palm oil from their own brand and she’d vowed to shop there as a consequence. Now she was disappointed in herself that she hadn’t done it more often. And what about her beloved wood burner? Was she harbouring a soon-to-be-banned polluting monster in her sitting room? If a betting person, she’d have put good money on it being healthier for our planet than burning oil or gas forcibly extracted from the depths of the earth and transported hundreds, if not thousands of miles. Ditto electric heating. Wasn’t most electricity made by some process that involved… burning fossil fuels or using nuclear power with its accompanying toxic waste? And where did this leave the debate on electric cars? They might be clean to run, but the power to charge them up had to come from somewhere, didn’t it? She was no eco warrior – just concerned about doing the right thing. Wouldn’t it be great if she didn’t have to worry so much about her choices? What if only the right choices were available? Like her car. It made the right decision when it switched itself off – at least it did most of the time. She hoped it was the right decision anyway. As she didn’t actually sit stationary in traffic for long periods, she sometimes wondered if all this repeated re-starting didn’t in fact burn MORE fuel and release MORE pollutants into the atmosphere. Should look that up, along with every other thing she wasn’t sure about. AAAGGHHHH… the list was endless and it was, to coin a phrase, doin’ her head in. Neither a ‘chuck-it-all-in-the-same-bin’ barbarian, nor a ‘go-plasticfree’ paragon, it dawned on her she was that middle-ground creature someone who does a bit to save the planet, whilst fretting a lot about the state of the planet. She’d become an Eco-Worrier. And worrying, as everyone knew, was pointless, achieved nothing – she needed to know more, do more, try harder. And that feisty lady in the shop was quite right. She really shouldn’t have left her engine running… © Lucia Foster-Found 2019 www.luciafosterfound.com

HOOKED G

olden, late September sunlight slanted through the beech branches overhanging the road, and the lingering morning mist was swiftly departing as she turned down a lane with a halfhidden entrance. In a wooden cabin by a lake, a welcome, a cup of coffee and a bacon sandwich awaited amongst the assorted fisher-folk who too had bought a ticket - and presumably a rod licence - to fish that day. After brushing the breadcrumbs from her coat, she was led to a bench by the waterside and the lesson began with tying something called a half-blood knot. Applying herself diligently, she attached the recommended ‘green montana’ to her fishing line. Pleased with her achievement, she sucked her bleeding thumb gently as she observed the next step; casting. Well, that looked easy. And then again looks can be deceptive. That thrashing thing she was doing with her rod, line and fly? - it in no way resembled that effortless thing everyone else was doing. As she, yet again, disengaged her montana from the waterside sedge (and then from her thumb), it was patiently explained that she was not a coachman, the rod not a whip, and the water not a team of reluctant horses. No, it seemed that she should move the rod firmly back and forth as if it were hands on a clockface from ten until two. Tick.Tock.To and fro. Although alien and awkward, this method improved proceedings mightily and her fly actually landed in the water more than two feet from the bank! A little more practice of letting the line out with each forward ‘tick’ and the fly was travelling farther towards the middle of the limpid pool. Pulling the line back, she varied the speed, twitching the fly as if it were a living (although floundering and hopefully soon-to-be-consumed) insect. Totally absorbing. Time ceased to have meaning and the unheeded autumnal sun reaching its zenith warmed her back, as she cast and retrieved and cast again. “No luck yet? Try a different fly – fish might fancy something else from the menu, so to speak.” The helpful advice gave her the opportunity to choose something colourful and attractive from the tin. A red, black and white striped affair with a gleam of silver tempted her. Utterly dissimilar from the little drab thing she’d snipped from her line with the titchy scissors, she attached it after a couple of attempts and a bit more thumb sucking.

A half decent cast – the furthest yet - and there was a wondrous great ripple of water as her cheery fly was snatched from beneath. The line streaked away and the reel let out a genteel scream. Suddenly, instruction was forthcoming from all quarters; “Keep your tip up and your rod’ll act like a spring.” “Keep the line tight.” “Give it line.” “Reel it in…” And she learned to give and to take, to let the fish swim and then to reel it back towards her. Slowly, slowly, she allowed the fish to tire, let it swim away less and brought it back towards her more, until she was able to use a proffered net to land it. With an audience, she dispatched the four pound trout using a weighted antler ‘priest’ and removed the fly from its mouth with forceps, thankfully no thumb sucking required. Something primeval within her stirred and her inner hunter-gatherer was elated. Much later, as dusk deepened and the air turned damp and cool with the returning mist, she sat in a deckchair, sipping hot tea, reflecting upon the day. The evening rise had yielded a three pound brown trout. She’d bake this one in the oven with butter, silky fronds of dill and slices of lemon – to be eaten with hollandaise, baby potatoes and peas, mmn… For the earlier, larger rainbow she had other designs; given the number of a local smokery, she planned to enjoy that catch for longer. It had been an exciting, extraordinary day. A day of firsts: First fish caught, something she’d dreamed about as a child – literally. In the bizarre way of dreams she’d fished at a swimming pool and caught a sturgeon. She supposed she might have been a strange kid. With her barbecued steak lunch, a first slice of giant puffball fried in olive oil. Delicious – who knew? And the most surprising first; akin to some tropical serpent, a grass snake seen swimming across the lake, lazy, sinuous. A double-take, a look around. Still England. Driving home in the dark, favouring her tender thumb, she planned a tetanus booster and added fly fishing kit to her virtual Christmas list. Along with the trout, it seemed that she too was hooked… © Lucia Foster-Found 2019 www.luciafosterfound.com
