OVER WALLOP

From the beginning of 2021 the residential property market in the Test Valley has experienced unprecedented demand for village property. For example, one property we recently offered for sale had sixteen viewings in the first two weeks and fifteen of the potential buyers were ‘ready to go’, either in rented or with nothing to sell. It is a strong market and during the last three months we have sold properties ranging from £400,000 to £2.65 million. Residential properties in the Test Valley are required to satisfy this demand and if you are thinking of selling, or would like any property advice please contact either David Smith or Alexis Northam. If you would like our advice on a valuation or are thinking of selling please contact us.

Cattle Lane Beef T here is a quietly run family enterprise in Abbotts Ann which has grown over the past 10 years into a familiar local Beef Herd roaming the pastures of the Test Valley. Cattle Lane Beef is headed up by Stephen Wilson assisted by sons William and Robert. The Wilsons, in the last 5 years, have been offering their locally reared, slow grown, Hampshire Downland Grass Fed Beef on a monthly basis to the local community. The feedback to the Beef Boxes is overwhelmingly positive; "Delicious meat and a friendly experience would highly recommend if looking for local, quality produce”. ‘Modern’ farming and food production has led us to a point where most consumers eat meat that is produced in an un-natural way. Cattle Lane Beef are proudly ‘old fashioned’ in their approach to both animal husbandry and farming. Their happy cattle are seen grazing around Andover and neighbouring villages. Cows with young calves suckling at foot can be seen from May onwards grazing amongst fields full of wildflowers or standing in a chalk stream. Cattle between 1 to 3 years old are found chomping their way around Anton Lakes and up on Harewood. But Abbotts Ann is their true home, and they are grazed here at most times of the year. They forage and munch on the multitude of naturally growing meadow grasses that imbue the meat with its unique depth of flavour. Cattle Lane Beef’s story is not uncommon in the UK. The quality of beef these farmers produce needs to be sought out; it is grown more slowly than the product on the supermarket shelf, with little or no input other “I am passionate about the meat I eat. It has to come from a reliable source that cares for the animals and than grass. There are it has to taste great. The beef from Cattle Lane is no un-natural carbs amongst the best I’ve eaten”. Juanita Hennessey or sugars used in the Chef, food writer and MasterChef favourite fattening of their cattle, as it is a natural process over time. As a result, there is a higher content of vitamins and minerals in their grass reared beef. As a member of the

4

nationally renowned Red Tractor Scheme, which monitors animal welfare, good livestock husbandry and ensures good practices, their animals are reared to the highest of standard. Meticulous record keeping and health management planning is all monitored on regular farm inspections, before the Red Tractor standards mark can be put above the Farmers door. Two quality Pedigree Bulls graze in the smaller fields and these two bulls serve the growing herd every spring. ‘Charcoal Burner’ the larger Aberdeen Angus was bought in from the top Pedigree AA Breeder of the renowned Gaston Wood Herd in the Bourne Valley, a gentle giant weighing in at well over 1000kg. ‘Horatio’, the traditional Hereford Bull was brought into the Herd as he has a slightly smaller frame and generally spends his time with the younger heifers and cows, before they run with the Dark and ominous looking big softy Charcoal Burner. The Herd grow to maturity slowly. Very little modern farming technology is involved in the way the Wilsons Farm. If you find yourself leaning on a gate talking to nosey cattle, note the last six ear tag digits, as you may be sniffed and licked by a bigger version of the same animal in the following years. Beef is available to order only a few days every month and is sold by the box of approximately 10kg. A typical beef box contains; two or three roasting joints, a variety of steaks in packs of two, some minute steaks, good quality bags of stewing steak and beef mince. There is the option of adding Beef Burgers, these are generally ground from pure brisket joints and are not your average burger! If you care about sourcing your natural, mineral-rich meat from a sustainable and local family business then please pre-order here: bit.ly/Pre-Order-Beef-Box and we can notify you of the next collection date. Or simply phone and ask Stephen whatever it is you wish to know about his beloved herd. Valuable Tips for Creating Beautiful Garden Landscapes

W

hen you bring a new plant from a nursery to plant in your garden you become a designer who designs the garden landscape that you have. If you want to be a great designer, you need to be aware of certain aspects so that you can have the best landscape. You may have noticed that some gardens have an organized look while others, having the finest plant collection, look haphazard. The basic reason for this is because the owner or the landscape designer has not planned the future of the garden properly. The following tips will help you to have among the best garden landscapes that can be had. The following good tips will help you to have a garden which will stand out from other gardens and will also keep you from the headache of knowing what to do. Plan the garden properly The landscape of the garden must be planned in such a manner that it looks beautiful now while also having the future in mind. You will find it is best to plant your precious collection of plants in such a manner that there is enough space when in the future you require a mower, or the stump grinder, to enter for building projects for your porch or the patio. If this planning is not done now, then in the future you may have to throw away your precious plants in order to have space for allowing movement of such equipment. Have a focal point The focal point of your garden must be such that it attracts people and engages their attention when roaming in your garden. It should be different than others but not out-of-place. You can have an antique garden bench as the focal point but don't use an object which is not related to the garden. A water body or an oak tree can be a great focal point that will give the garden landscape a new dimension. Curves must be checked It is good to have curved pathways or flower beds in a garden, but you must not overdo them. It must be kept simple so that the geometric design that you have incorporated in the landscaping stands out. If you use those shapes too often it will become common and no one will notice them. Have movement in the garden A garden landscape that does not have movement is like a painting. Paintings are good on the walls but in a garden, you must have movement so that you can bring life and create interest in your garden. You may be wondering how to have movement. It is quite easy to have such

6

movement in your garden by adding swaying ornamental grass or flowers which attract birds and butterflies and this will help to have the desired movement in your garden. Think completely differently When you are designing the landscaping of your garden you must think completely differently from the one that you now have. For example, if you have overgrown shrubbery don't think that you have to keep it like that. By removing it you may be astonished to find a sunny sport that can be ideal for a rose bed. So, don't plan your landscaping according to the present situation but think differently and you will find new possibilities to have an even better landscape. Choose plants according to locations When you select a plant base for a particular spot in your garden, consider the growth rate and the final size it will be. If you do not base your plant selection on these considerations, then the money you spend will not lead to overall beautification but, in the end, you will have to spend more money for adjustments. If you think that by having a cheap plant that grows fast you are gaining much you are thinking wrongly. The money you will spend later for pruning and other maintenance will eat up your initial savings. So, have a purposeful selection of garden trees and place them properly. Let the garden show the way The design of the garden should lead visitors to your house. You don't want visitors losing their way so the garden must show the way to the house. The curved pathway or the big pots that you place need to say, "Hi, this is the way that you need to go." A limited number of species If you have a garden don't feel pressured to have every plant species that are available. Select those species which will help you to have a garden that is easier to maintain and gives it a uniform look. Select the species according to seasons so that you can have flowers in your garden throughout the year and also add to the biodiversity that you have in your garden. Space plants properly This is of utmost importance because it determines how your beloved garden will survive. Having proper spacing of plants ensures having the right airflow required for the survival of the plants and avoids having fungal insect infections. You may feel that there are vacant places in the garden. Yes, there will be and you can easily fill those spaces by the proper use, and positioning, of annuals.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Savoury Hot Cross Buns A delicious savoury alternative to the traditional Hot Cross Bun, with the same spicy-sweet taste we enjoy. With mature cheddar, sage and bacon glazed with maple syrup, what more could you want as a replacement for the traditional Sunday morning breakfast. Ingredients

55g salted butter, cubed, at room temperature 460g bread flour 1 tsp salt 40ml soft brown sugar 1 tsp mixed spices 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp mixed peel (optional) 11g Instant dry yeast 1 large egg, beaten 200ml warm water ½ cup raisins or sultanas (optional) 230g mature cheddar, grated 250g streaky bacon halved lengthways 60ml maple syrup, for brushing 30g fresh thyme sprigs, to garnish icing sugar

Method

Grease and line a deep roasting tray. Rub the butter into the flour and add in salt, sugar, spices and then mix. Add the yeast and mix again. Beat the egg and warm water together and add to the dough. Mix the ingredients to form a soft dough then knead for 10 minutes until you get a smooth and elastic result. Mix in the raisins or sultanas, if you are using them. Split the dough up into 12 equal amounts and roll into balls. Roll each ball in the grated cheddar cheese then wrap two slices of bacon over the top of the dough to form a cross. Place the dough balls in the tray and loosely cover with cling wrap and allow to prove until roughly doubled in size.

12

Preheat the oven to 180 °C (160 °C for fan-forced). Brush the bacon with maple syrup and sprinkle some thyme leaves over the buns. Bake in a preheated oven for 30-40 minutes until golden brown. Test the buns are cooked correctly but tapping them, they should make a hollow sound when tapped. Serve warm with loads of butter for spreading.

Enjoy!

WELLBEING How to keep your immune system dynamic - Long Covid and chronic stress or injury sufferers, this is for you!

Top tips and a lymphatic boosting exercise routine As I write, the sun is shining, it's early March and there is a feeling of hopefulness and newness blooming! There is a lovely positive energy in the air and I am feeling a little lift in my mood. I want to tap into this vibe for this article and look at ways of supporting that lift and positivity. Last month we did a deep dive into sleep and I hope you have all benefited from some of the top tips and already felt the rise in energy a good nights sleep can bring. As well as sleep, it is also crucial that we have excellent circulation and drainage throughout the body, in our arteries, veins, lymphatics and around and within our organs. Stress, illness, poor nutrition and no exercise causes tissues to become inflamed and congested. Inflammation is literally like glue to the body, it is sticky and reduces the natural slide and glide between the tissue layers. The body begins to feel heavy and sluggish and our physical and mental energy deteriorates, leaving us feeling foggy-headed, tired, bloated, constipated, slow to heal and prone to infection. To generate freedom of movement within the fluids of the body we must generate freedom of movement outside of the body, both by what we are putting in our

New Hampshire History Trust reveals exciting plans for the future The organisers of Winchester’s successful Heritage Open Days programme announce the formation of Hampshire History Trust, a brand new Charitable Incorporated Organisation. The primary role of the new Trust will be to run Winchester Heritage Open Days, to develop a Winchester History Festival and to run other community projects such as a Blue Plaque Scheme and Hampshire HistBites, Hampshire’s very own history podcast channel. Nicky Gottlieb and Becky Brown, two of the three founding Trustees, said they were delighted that the new charity had been approved by the Charity Commission, especially as they got the news on the close of last year’s Heritage Open Days. “This is the start of an exciting journey for us ,” Nicky said. “Five years ago when I first re-launched Heritage Open Days here in Winchester I always dreamed that it would develop onto a wider history festival to celebrate Winchester’s incredibly rich history and heritage. Becoming a CIO in our own right is a crucial and exciting first step in realising our ambitions to bring Hampshire's rich history and heritage to a wider audience. ”

14

mouths and by how we move, stretch, relax and unwind each day. Diets low in beige, processed food and high in whole grains, lean organic meat protein, pulses, green leafy veg, pre and probiotic rich foods and plenty of water actually improve the motility of the gut by making it work hard to digest your food. Relaxation and stress reduction is vital in reducing inflammation. Taking the time for regular breathing, mindfulness, yoga or mediation practices can make all the difference to your mental health and energy, and help promote vitality, healing and fluid flow throughout the body. Taking lots of movement breaks throughout the day is so important in keeping the circulation flowing, especially to the brain, to help keep you focussed and productive. Our immunity also suffers when our bodies are congested. The immune system relies on an efficient lymphatic system, but unlike the circulation of the blood, it doesn’t have a big heart pump, but relies on body movement to be the pump. The lymph system has areas of nodes, which are like little filters for the white blood cells, mainly found in the neck, armpits, chest and groin. Interestingly, the areas for most of the nodes are situated near a joint – an area of maximal movement. Or should be an area of maximal movement! But of course, what happens, in reality, is with lots of working, driving, sitting and sedentary time, these nodes don’t get enough stimulation and the lymphatic and immune system become compromised. So, lovely peeps, I bring you a node-squishing-releasing exercise routine designed exclusively to target mobilising the joints where the nodes are most abundant. If this doesn’t help your lymphatics find their flow, I don’t know what will! Oh, actually a good power walk will also do the trick. But for instant, at home/office sloth relief, go to our website to find this blog and click the link there to take you to the dynamic 6 minute lymphatic flow exercise routine. Here’s to moving onwards, upwards and finally outwards into Spring, energy and good health. Emma Wightman Stockbridge Osteopathic Practice - www.the-sop.com

Becky paid tribute to the City of Winchester Trust and to Bruce Winton at Community First and all the organisations, sponsors and volunteers who have been involved in Winchester Heritage Open Days since 2016. “We wouldn't be here without their support and encouragement ', she said.” And we hope our partnerships with the City of Winchester Trust, Hampshire Cultural Trust, Winchester College, Hampshire County Council, Winchester BID, and the University of Winchester will continue to grow as we build on the success of Winchester Heritage Open Days to develop a Winchester History Festival and hold more outreach activities and events for schools .” The proposal is for the Winchester History Festival to take place in late September, immediately following on from Heritage Open Days to ensure that the Trust continues to offer a diverse range of events that are accessible to the whole community. The general public can discover more about the Trust and its plans by visiting the website www.hampshirehistorytrust.com , or by listening to Episode One of Season Three of Hampshire HistBites released on Wednesday 3rd March and available via Spotify, Apple Tunes and Google Podcasts.

EDUCATION Godolphin’s Spring Term 2021

Students have adapted well to wearing face masks in class and Godolphin’s dedicated parents have joined the medical team to provide regular Covid testing across the School. The boarding houses have been full of laughter while the girls have been reunited with their friends. Now more than ever Godolphin’s flexible boarding offering is really popular and is helping to meet the demands of family life during this time.

Godolphin Spring Term Godolphin has come alive again this month as students were welcomed back into School after lockdown. Head Emma Hattersley said “it’s so good to be back. During the first few weeks, the emphasis has been on reintegrating the students into School and allowing them to spend time with their friends. It’s been wonderful to see the whole

school community reunited and together again.“ Action-packed days in the Spring sunshine have really helped to lift our spirits and students have embraced all the activities on offer. From team building sessions, lacrosse and netball, fitness and tennis, football and Combined Cadet Force, there’s been so much going on.

E = Explain - Explain your evidence. L = Link - Link it back to the question.

Use pictures Pictures are a great aid too. You’ve undoubtedly heard the phrase ‘every picture tells a story’, well that couldn’t be more true. Whether they be drawings or photos, images can help everyone’s reading comprehension from age two to 22! Choose an image and ask the following questions:

Celebrate books When you can, gather around those little tables in book shops and get excited about new book releases. Read those weekly email reviews about books and get excited about ordering a new book.

What happened before? What will happen next? What impression do you get of the character? (discuss character traits)

I love books with a passion. Reading was part of my upbringing. It was my hobby in the same way that rugby might be someone’s hobby. But children don’t always engage with reading. So how can you support and encourage reluctant readers or help your child progress with their reading? Here are a number of simple but tried and tested ways! Explore sequencing This is a great activity to do with younger

children. Muddle up a favourite story using pictures or pictures and simple words and trying to reorder them together.

What is happening?

Sheina Wright, Head of Prep School, Embley, shares some invaluable tips to help children to develop their reading skills.

Godolphin’s strong pastoral focus continues with the health and wellbeing of its students being a priority. Last month the School launched a telephone helpline talk@ godolphin.org and last week an invitation to join a new Wellbeing hub was extended to the whole school community.

What is their name? How are they feeling? (this is great for developing empathy) What is the setting? Try ‘PEEL’ Another useful technique is ‘PEEL’. Use this when answering tricky comprehension questions. P = Point - What is the question asking? Identify question words. Consider characters mentioned. E = Evidence - Find evidence from the text to back your thoughts and answers.

Choose wisely Follow your child’s interests and be aware of their fluency. Select books which are pitched to their abilities so there is a level of fluency rather than frustration. Like most things, if the narrative you give your child (of reading) is a positive one then their relationship with books and literature is more likely to be a positive one too. Be a reading role model We are all readers. Whenever you can, try and be a reading role model. Whatever you’re reading gives the message to your child that reading is something to be valued and enjoyed. Happy reading! COMMUNITY 2021 New Forest and Hampshire County Show cancelled to due COVID-19 concerns

pandemic. The New Forest & Hampshire County Show will be returning to New Park in 2022 on 26th, 27th and 28th July. All stakeholders involved with the New Forest Show will be contacted personally within the next couple of days. The cancellation of two subsequent New Forest Shows has only happened once before in the Show’s 100-year history. No Shows were held between 1940 and 1945 during World War 2. The 2020 event which was also cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic would have marked one hundred years since the very first New Forest Show in 1920.

Following a review of the current pandemic and the Government roadmap the board members of the New Forest Agricultural Show Society (NFASS), organisers of the New Forest and Hampshire County Show have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 event that was due to take place on the 27th, 28th & 29th July at New Park, Brockenhurst. Following the Prime Minister’s announcement on 22nd February 2021, board members held a digital meeting to discuss the 2021 New Forest Show and unanimously agreed they had no option but to cancel the 2021 event due to ongoing uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19

26

Martin Stewart Chairman commented, ‘We are all extremely saddened to have come to this decision, but the Society is a Charity and the Show costs well in excess of a million pounds to lay on annually. Whilst we believe we are slowly coming out of lockdown there are still too many things that could delay matters. The final date of the 21st June is the earliest the final restrictions could be lifted; it could be delayed. If the Society were to go ahead and for whatever reason the Show was cancelled (even with 3 months to go) it would bankrupt the Society. The Board unanimously agreed that it was better to protect the long-term survival of the Society than to risk everything in what is still very uncertain times. We know what the show means to the community, exhibitors, competitors, sponsors, stewards, members and indeed the whole team at the

Following recent Government guidance and the road map out of lockdown, Andover BID is working closely with businesses in the town to ensure that they are ready for re-opening.

Here is just one of the businesses that has benefited recently from the support that Andover BID has provided.

As a part of Andover BID’s business support package is to ensure a wide range of support is available, so that businesses are ready to adapt to the changing environment, challenges and opportunities for the rest of 2021 and 2022.

Steve Godwin, Andover BID manager say’s ‘We have been operating throughout the lockdown period and supporting businesses in a number of different ways depending on their particular sector. Inevitably, most businesses have found it tough and we have supported

Steph, owner of the SP Bar says “ It has been a tough time for us and for all businesses that rely on footfall and customers. We have used the lockdown time wisely and as a relatively new business to Andover with an exciting and new concept for the town. Steve & Andy have been extremely helpful and their marketing support invaluable. We also benefit from Pubwatch, the radio system and the recently introduced Shopwatch App and have been pleased with the Premises Improvement Grant Scheme enabling us to make improvements to our building”.

Showground. We are very disappointed but will be back with a vengeance in 2022’. In a response to requests from Society supporters, the NFASS has created a Centenary fund. Anyone who would like to help secure the future of the New Forest Show is encouraged to do so by donating to the Centenary fund. Donations can be made online via the New Forest Show website. Denis Dooley, Chief Executive commented “This was a very difficult decision to make and I am sorry we cannot hold the New Forest & Hampshire County Show this year. The fragile nature of the roadmap alongside the uncertainly over regulations for large events this Summer made planning for the 2021 Show impossible. When coming to the decision the Board were unanimous in their aim to prioritise the long term success of the Show and the safety of all those involved. These are both unprecedented and challenging times for the Society and I would encourage anyone who wants to demonstrate their support to contribute towards our Centenary Fund”. The Society are delighted to be launching their new education program this year with the aim to connect people with nature through the formation of an education hub at New Park. The project will consist of six areas and more information can be found at www.newparkfarm.org. For more information about the New Forest and Hampshire County Show visit www. newforestshow.co.uk

Andover is fortunate to be a relatively safe, easy & enjoyable place to visit and with easy access, low-cost car parking and over 100 town centre independent businesses, we have much to be proud of. We are looking forward to welcoming people back to the town in line with the government opening up again. To coincide with the spring weather, the new and very attractive town centre Riverside park reopening, Andover BID will launch a PR campaign to promote all that is good about the town. Reasons to remortgage  Remortgaging is the process of getting a new mortgage on your existing home either  with your current or new lender.

More often than not, the main reason to remortgage is to lower your monthly repayments and save yourself some money, but it’s not the only one. 1. To switch to a fixed rate product: if you currently have a variable rate product and feel that interest rates will rise in the next few years, then remortgaging to a fixed rate product is something to consider. 2. More payment flexibility: your current mortgage may not allow you to make overpayments or underpayments. If you feel this kind of flexibility would be useful then remortgaging to a more flexible product may be advantageous. 3. Better mortgage terms: when you first took out your current mortgage you may recently become self-employed or had a poor credit score leading to you being offered a more expensive product. If your financial circumstances have improved, remortgaging could get you a mortgage with lower monthly payments.

4. Accessing equity: if your property has increased in value, or your mortgage has decreased, you can release some of the equity by remortgaging. You may want to remortgage to release equity to carry out home improvements which could increase the value of your property, especially if it is an extension or loft conversion. If you’d like to talk to a qualified mortgage adviser about your options, contact us today. Telephone and mortgage appointments are available. Andover branch; 35 High Street, Andover, SP10 1LJ.
