October Events October 14th
We are delighted to announce the launch of Somborne Community Cinema, which screens its first film on Thursday 14th October. Run on a voluntary basis by a team of local cinema enthusiasts, the venture has been set up to take advantage of the impressive new audio-visual system in Kings Somborne village hall, and to bring the cinema experience into the heart of the village. A diverse range of films will be screened on the second Thursday of each month at the Village Hall, Recreation Ground, Romsey Road, Kings Somborne SO20 6PP. Doors will open at 7:15pm and films start at 8:00pm. Before the film there will be a bar serving beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks. Tickets cost £6.00 (this includes a booking fee) and are available from the cinema’s website at www.sombornecommunitycinema.co.uk You can also sign-up on the website to receive the cinema’s email newsletter. Stockbridge Music The Gesualdo Six
From 7.30pm at St Mary’s Church ,Stockbridge - The Gesualdo Six have emerged from a crowded field as one of the most exciting vocal ensembles specialising in Renaissance polyphony. We are delighted to welcome them back to Stockbridge celebrating the 500th anniversary of the hugely influential French Renaissance composer Josquin des Prez ( c. 1450 – 1521) the greatest composer of his age. Their programme highlights some of the ‘ jewels in the crown ‘ of this period of Italian Renaissance repertoire by chasing themes of pedagogy and patronage in Northern Italy over 150 years featuring works by Brumel. Weyhill Electronic Organ Society (WEOS)
Coming Back – With Music For Everyone. After a delay of some twenty months, the Weyhill Electronic Organ Society is set to resume monthly concerts on Thursday 21 October 2021, when the guest performer will be Phil Brown from Derby. Phil has played as supporting act with the late Joe Loss and his Orchestra, as well as with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, at the Derby Assembly Rooms. In addition to performing on electronic keyboard, he is also a very accomplished pianist, having achieved various qualifications and diplomas. He has performed in the USA and Spain as well as at festivals in Germany. The concert is being staged at the Fairground Hall in Weyhill, commencing at 7.30 p.m., with doors opening at 7.00 p.m. Tickets priced at £6.00 can be purchased at the door and interval refreshments are available. Everyone who enjoys melodic, easy listening live music is urged to attend and to demonstrate that there is still a demand for the quality entertainment provided by the Club. utumn arrives with a flurry of leaves and the hint of a chill. Done picking the blackberries, we’ll wait for the sloes to be frosted, before we introduce them to the gin that waits for them too. In orchards, apples no longer aloft languish in long grass beneath rapidly balding boughs. On warmer days in slanting sunlight, sleepy wasps buzz about their bruised, browning flesh. The nights draw in, suddenly it seems. We retreat into our home, close the doors and pull together the curtains. We shut out the gathering gloom and allay all thoughts of oncoming winter. And Halloween comes, when it’s said the veils that separate the world of the living from that of the dead become thin and porous. Traditionally, we’d light candles to guide our departed loved ones back to us and set them a place at the table. Turnips and pumpkins would be carved into grotesque faces to ward off evil - and offerings of food were left on the doorstep to placate malevolent spirits. It was and still is, a time for feasting, dressing up in costumes, games and storytelling. And these might be my Halloween tales to tell. I last heard this first one many years ago; the teller is no longer with us, so sadly I can’t ask them to tell it to me afresh. I believe it took place in the ’70s and this is how I remember it… Parked up one night outside Beaulieu Abbey Domus, a woman sits in the car and waits for her husband. He’s there after-hours on some business and she’s come along for the ride. Sat there alone in the darkness, I suspect that time trickles by slowly for her. By and by her husband returns to the car, together with a staff member who apologises for keeping him so long. She says it’s alright, that she’s been listening to the recording of the monks singing, like they do. Must have been playing from somewhere inside the ruins, for the tourists she supposes..? Excellent, logical explanation in theory, but apparently anything visitor-related had long since been

switched off for the day. The chanting of the Monks that she thought she’d heard? Whatever it was, it was no recording. Postscript: And it seems she hasn’t been the only one to hear the chants - others have reported similar experiences. Here is another tale, one such as might be shared of a Halloween night, autumnal gusts rattling the letter box and rain thrashing wetly at the windows. This one is mine. It was a Saturday morning and I had some tasks to finish off at the office. I didn’t usually work weekends and I wasn’t planning on being there long, so my husband came with me. We were going on from there once I was done – shopping I think. Sat at my desk, I saw a movement to my left at the far end of the open-plan space. We were alone in the building and the doors were locked, so assuming it was my beloved with that promised cup of coffee, I looked up expectantly. A tall, slim figure wearing what I’d describe as a beige boiler suit was just disappearing around the corner and out of my field of vision. He most definitely was not my shorter, stockier, jeans-clad husband. Startled, confused, I sat for a moment then got up from my desk, just as my husband came rushing out of the kitchen towards me. “I’ve just seen some bloke walk past. I think he’s gone into the loos.” He exclaimed, looking as startled and confused as I felt. “I saw him too. Wearing overalls?” He nodded “Yes, biscuit-coloured.” We both went and searched the toilets, which were located down a dead-end corridor. Although we can’t explain why, neither of us were the least bit surprised that no-one was there. I should mention here that the office was located in a brick-walled Nissen hut. It was situated on the periphery of an airfield; both RAF and USAAF squadrons had used it as a base during WW2. And the beige overalls? Can’t be sure of course, but they looked very much like a flying suit.

EDUCATION questions and understand key vocabulary is a key requirement in all subjects. For example in History, a tower in the inner part of a castle where stores were usually kept and where defenders would retreat as a last resort was called…? This is a literal question which requires a one-word answer. However, if children don’t understand ‘defenders’, ‘retreat’ or ‘resort’ then they can’t answer the question.
Closing the vocabulary gap
In Maths, children can come across the same issue in problem solving. These can be vocabulary rich multi-step problems which rely on an ability to break down a question before applying maths skills.
Language excites me, writes Embley’s Head of Prep, Sheina Wright. From refusing to get out the car when I was reaching the end of The Twits to excitedly scribbling notes about the symbolism of weather in my copy of Wuthering Heights. Books and reading make me happy. My dad adores books and passed that love on to me. Vocabulary, therefore, was prioritised and part of my world from a very young age at home as well as beyond the school gates. Vocabulary is learned implicitly and incidentally as well as explicitly and the vocabulary gap can appear from a young age. Unless addressed it begins to widen, and in turn, so does the attainment gap. Literacy is everyone’s responsibility. Being word poor can impact on a child’s learning across the curriculum. An ability to break down
So how do we improve this vocabulary deficit as teachers? Across the subjects we make sure that vocabulary is taught not just caught. It is planned in and explicitly taught. We use diverse vocabulary in our talk. We value it and use a structured approach and academic language. Alongside this we encourage independent reading of quality texts, so that children can experience more sophisticated sentence structure and more complex vocabulary. The explicit teaching of vocabulary helps to offer children strategies so that they can increasingly unlock more challenging texts and therefore gain pleasure from reading texts which will make them word rich. So next time your child is studying a subject at school or you are hard at work, consider the language of your subject, discuss it with those around you or when you get home. WELLBEING And breathe - September health plan kick start
I have always found the Autumn is a much better time to kickstart a new health plan than January. As the light changes and temperatures lower, and we return to school or work, a change in tempo feels genuinely appealing too. For many, this has been a summer of indulgences, which is not surprising, given the challenging year we have been through. There is nothing wrong with dropping the regular exercise or having a few more treats, drinks or late nights than is ideal, and I would actively encourage it for short periods, but the start of Autumn feels like the perfect time to reset and boost our bodies in preparation for Winter. I have loved the long days, late evenings and having all my kids, their friends, and friends of friends… buzzing around, and it has been a very happy chaotic summer, but I am now in need of catching my breath and refocussing. I am sitting writing this in our new-old caravan now parked on the drive, still feeling the wonderful holiday vibes it has brought us. There is a sense of calm and relaxation in this space, and it prompts me to think about how to best start that process of resetting, and I realise I have already written the words. I need to catch my breath. “How well we breathe can determine the quality of our life” says author and presenter Dr Rangan Chatterjee. Author of ‘Breath’, James Nestor writes “No matter what you eat, how much you exercise, how skinny, young or wise you are, none of it matters if you’re not breathing correctly” These are wise words and a great starting point to improve our health simply by breathing well. I always come back to movement as the source of healing and health, but when it comes to breathing it is often a form of movement that is overlooked. Breathing is far more than gaseous exchange! Correct breathing has the power to: 1. Reduce your stress: - try 3 minutes of slow breathing to flip your nervous system out of fight/flight and into its flow state 2. Reduce indigestion, bloating, wind and IBS symptoms: - deepen your breath into your lower ribs and diaphragm for an internal gut massage effect (see my Instagram account for an incredible moving MRI clip beautifully demonstrating this) 3. Improve cardio-vascular fitness: - try nasal breathing the next time you’re out for a walk or run

4. Improve pelvic floor symptoms like leaking and prolapse: - connect your breath with your pelvic floor exercises 5. Improve your sleep: - focus on the sound and feeling of the breath through the nose and chest to help calm your thoughts 6. Strengthen your core: - link your breath to your movements, yoga or Pilates style 7. Reduce neck and shoulder tension: - avoid breathing into your upper chest and focus the breath to your lower chest and diaphragm 8. Reduce swelling, inflammation and oedema by improving circulation and drainage. Your diaphragm acts like a pump and siphon: - combine breath work with lying with your legs up the wall. Test Valley supports Afghan refugees Test Valley Borough Council is working alongside local partners to help refugees from Afghanistan who fled the country following the recent crisis. The authority, along with colleagues from Hampshire County Council and the NHS, is providing hands-on support to eight families currently staying on a short-term basis in the borough, while plans are made for their futures in the UK. Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Phil North, said: “Like you all, I’ve watched in horror at the recent situation in Afghanistan and despite the harrowing stories that we’ve heard from families that have arrived in the borough - the situation these refugees have been in is something none of us can truly begin to comprehend. I’m, therefore, proud that Test Valley is currently pulling out all the stops to support them.” “Alongside partners and charities, our officers are working constantly to provide the essential items that these refugees need for the coming days and weeks. Helping them with food, clothes, medical appointments and other needs.” “Many people have contacted me in recent weeks asking about the support Test Valley is giving Afghan refugees – and I’m pleased to confirm that we will continue to do everything we can to help. It’s my sincere hope that with all of our support they can feel safe and begin to look forward to a better future.” Whilst the council is grateful for donations that have recently been made via the Unity collection point, Test Valley is not currently seeking any further items. Note: Due to the sensitivity of the situation and to respect the privacy of the those being supported, we are unable to provide further information on exactly where families are staying.

Curried Pumpkin Soup Don't waste your pumpkins this Halloween. Make a delicious pumpkin Soup, packed with goodness of pumpkin, carrot and apple flavoured with whole spices and a dash of curry powder. 1 onion, chopped 1 medium sized pumpkin, peeled, deseeded and cubed 2 carrots, peeled and chopped 1 apple, peeled and cut into cubes 4 - 5 garlic cloves, chopped Salt and black pepper as per taste 2 tbsp olive oil 1 litre vegetable stock 1/4 tsp Curry Powder

Method
In a saucepan heat some olive oil over medium heat. Add whole spices and saute until aroma is released. Add onion and garlic, saute until translucent but not brown. Now add carrot, saute for 4 - 5 minutes followed by pumpkin and apple. Season with salt and pepper, as per taste. Mix nicely. Add curry powder and hot vegetable stock. Bring the soup to rapid boil once and then reduce the flame to low. Let it simmer over medium heat until liquid is reduced to half and vegetables are tender. Remove whole spices from the soup. Puree the soup to smooth consistency in blender. While serving finish with tsp of cream, olive oil, sprinkle melon seeds and chili flakes on top. Serve hot with a little fresh cream stirred in and a sprinkle of chilli flakes if you like a bit more spice!

A new programme of Test Valley Creative Events is set to take place throughout October, providing a varied schedule of talks and workshops for those in the arts and culture sector. Aimed at people living and working in Test Valley, all of the scheduled events are free to attend and will take place in person or online. The extensive new programme aims to give attendees the chance to reconnect with others in the art world and has been devised to provide opportunities to share ideas, learn, network and collaborate with peers. The first event will take place on Monday 4 October offering creative business guidance to start-ups and those thinking about building a creative business. Other events taking place throughout the month will see experts offering valuable advice on a range of subjects, such as how to apply for an Arts Council National Lottery Project Grant, top tips for successful bid writing, and an insight into marketing and social media. Interactive sessions are also planned including a Walk and Draw morning on 19 October, where participants can enjoy trying out some fun drawing exercises in Romsey. There will be the chance to explore environmental art at Mottisfont Abbey and join conversations about the arts and wellbeing at the Sir Harold Hillier Gardens. Individual artists, musicians, writers and performers, as well as established businesses, start-ups, community and cultural organisations are welcome to attend every session and are encouraged to book tickets in advance as places are limited. HOME / EDUCATION Girls only sixth form: outdated notion or catalyst for success? ‘It’s not the real world’ and ‘girls won’t cope when they go to university if they haven’t been to school with boys’ are the frequent reactions I hear to the idea of an all-girls sixth form. Having worked in all-girls’ schools for over twenty years, I can assure you that both my own experience and scientific research prove that these views are far from the truth. In fact, being in an all-girls learning environment gives young women the best possible chance of flourishing in the world beyond school. Let’s first consider the real world. In spite of some significant steps towards equality, girls and young women are under greater pressure than ever to conform to social stereotypes. From gender reveal parties where the unborn child is greeted with gendered paraphernalia such as pink or blue balloons, to clichés about not liking competition or having neat handwriting, young women continue to be channelled towards, and judged against, outdated notions of the female ideal. Humans are undeniably social creatures who like to fit in. The effect of stereotypes, therefore, is that many young people end up feeling they have to conform. At school this means girls avoiding so-called ‘male’ subjects, activities which are ‘non-feminine’ and roles which might lead to them being criticised as ‘bossy’ or ‘shrill’. Even as young as six, many children have internalised stereotypes such as that maths is for boys. Depressing as that is, the plasticity of our brains means that there is always time to help our pupils escape the constraints of gender stereotyping. In girls-only sixth forms, young women have the space and encouragement to test and develop their own interests. Research shows the success of this model in many areas such as developing greater levels of self-confidence and facilitating the study of STEM subjects. In fact, girls educated in single-sex school are just as self-confident as boys educated in boys’ schools and significantly more likely to study subjects such as physics than girls in co-educational schools. In addition, girls in single-sex schools are more inclined to carry on playing sport until 18 benefitting from the resulting positive effects on physical and mental health. Indeed, a Bristol University study found that single-sex schools encourage

“improved self-esteem, psychological and social wellbeing in adolescent girls”. Moreover, every pupil leadership role is occupied by a young woman who is starting to learn about the positive impact that she can have on the world around her. As a 2018 article pointed out, in a girls’ school, girls are intentionally “equipped with the knowledge and skills required to overcome social and cultural gender biases and in doing so actively break the stereotypical norms that define women in society.” This brings us to the second question about to what extent an allgirls sixth form prepares young women for university. At St Swithun’s around 25% of our leavers go on to study STEM-related subjects at top universities in the UK and overseas and will enter careers that still tend to be male-dominated. Our pupils have many opportunities outside the classroom to interact with young people from a range of other schools in drama and music productions such as our celebrated St Swithun’s Live rock concert, at competitions such as national debating challenges or Model United Nations and at social events. They are perfectly placed to enjoy good relationships with all kinds of people when they leave our sixth form having developed a quiet self-confidence and a genuine interest in others. A recent poll of our leavers from the past two decades revealed overwhelmingly that they formed healthy and happy relationships with male students precisely because they approached them as equals. Far from being an old-fashioned model of education, an all girls sixth form prepares young women to create and seize opportunities in the modern world. All you need to know about Retirement Interest-Only (RIO) mortgages It’s been over a decade since the financial crash wiped billions off the value of the UK’s biggest companies. As a result, borrowing became more difficult for those heading into their later years with many lenders lowering their maximum lending age limit and reducing the provision of interest-only mortgages. However, since the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) recently improved access to mortgage borrowing for those in retirement, the door finally reopened for everyone seeking finance; no matter their age. What is a RIO mortgage? RIO mortgages – short for Retirement Interest-Only – allow borrowers to pay a monthly interest payment with no set end date as it will run until a ‘significant life event’, such as the homeowner moving into long-term care or dying. It is at this point the mortgage is repaid by the sale of the mortgaged property. Who eligible for a Newbury Building Society RIO mortgage?
