EDUCATION Reception ready – starting school with a smile Starting school is a very exciting time! New adventures, new friends and connecting with fabulous teaching staff who will be important role models in your child’s life. Everyone involved in the transition from pre-school to Reception will undoubtedly want to ensure that the start of school is a fun time and school staff will be on hand to help with any nerves which may arise from both parents and children alike. Sheina Wright, Head of Prep at Embley, provides some top tips to help you and your child start school with a smile: Help to develop independence As parents we want to help our children as much as possible, but we sometimes forget that there are things that they can be doing for themselves: they are often more capable than we realise. Support your child before school starts by helping them do some things independently: getting dressed, packing their book bag, putting on their shoes, blowing their nose, going to the loo. It all takes time at first but with practise it is amazing what they can achieve! Get to know staff Nothing quite beats meeting the people you are going to be taught by, seeing your child’s classroom and exploring their new surroundings ahead of the start of school. Try and do this in the summer term before your child starts school so they get to know their teacher, teaching assistant and classmates, and so parents get to know the staff. It’s ok to have a little cry Much as it is an exciting time, it is a real milestone and can be (and often is) more challenging for grown-ups than it is for children. Try

to be brave at drop off time, but after that it is perfectly normal to feel emotional about this next step for you as a parent. It is a big deal and school staff will understand that. Do also try and be positive about school when chatting to your child – they take their cues from you and it is important to model that positivity. No question is a silly question It can feel like information overload when your child first starts school. Uniform, books, planners, snacks, PE...There are so many new things to think about and that’s before you throw work and organisation of siblings into the mix! Health and Wellness are important at all stages of life As a School, Godolphin recognises that good mental health and wellness is significant at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood. We realise it is our responsibility to provide up to date, thought-provoking and informative sessions for parents and pupils alike. Talking Mental Health and Wellness seeks to do exactly this. Every member of our community exists on the continuum of mental health which affects our emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing and therefore how we think, act, and feel, how we relate to others, react to stress, and make choices. Our aim is to promote positive mental health which allows our community to realise their full potential and make meaningful contributions, as well as equip our students with the resilience, positive emotions and practices they can use beyond their school years. On Friday 5 November 2021, Godolphin will host the Third annual Mental Health and Wellness Conference. This year, we focus on mental health and wellness as we return to school and how as parents, we can best support our young people after 18 months of uncertainty. Keynote speakers include Dr Nick Baylis and Natasha Devon MBE. Both are inspirational speakers, and I am sure will offer some no-nonsense much needed guidance for us all. As with last year’s

conference, the knowledge and expertise of our speakers is both diverse and relevant. Other speakers include Alicia Drummond from Teen Tips who will give us practical strategies to help our children fulfil their potential, Dr Nihara Krause, a specialist in eating disorders and Fiona Spargo-Mabbs whose personal experience has shaped the charity which she set up. We will also be hearing from Tasha Lawton, who has developed her own comprehensive series of curriculumaligned resources, covering alcohol, drugs, eating disorders, genderbased violence, periods, sex, sexuality and suicide and self-harm. John Perry has spoken to pupils and staff and returns to share his wisdom on imposter syndrome and Jo Reeves from Barefoot Coaching, will be addressing the emotional needs of children. We also look forward to hearing what Dr Emma Ross has to say on how to use sport and exercise as a vehicle to reframe attitudes towards the female body. Tickets available via www.godolphin.org

Three creative projects, co-ordinated by Test Valley Arts Foundation with funding from the Arts Council National Lottery Project Grants, will reach their conclusion over the next few weeks. Initially devised as part of the Borough of Culture festival ,which had planned to run throughout 2020, the aim of these projects was reach people who might otherwise face barriers to participating in creative experiences, and to create legacy projects which have a lasting impact in our communities.

Test Valley Tales An illustrated book and associated podcast includes 10 short stories set in real locations around the Test Valley, inspired by local folklore and legends. The project was devised and led by Andover based storyteller Amanda Kane Smith, in collaboration with local artists Maija Liepins and Susan Merrick and musician Paul Sartin. The book is a limited edition of 200 hardback copies. The podcast is a free online resource. The project has included live storytelling events at Romsey Festival, Andover’s Four Fun Fridays, Andover Rocks and Eastleigh Mela as well as at Romsey and Andover Libraries. Test Valley Tales has created a valuable resource for schools, incorporating themes of local geography, history and English. Two pilot schools workshops were delivered through the project so far.

Devised and led by Romsey based artist and educator Elizabeth Hammond, the aim of the project was to explore and learn how we can communicate through being creative together. The workshops were about enjoying the process of being creative, being less rigid in expectations of ourselves and our output. This is hugely beneficial as it builds confidence which is far reaching beyond the project. The culmination of the project was a month long exhibition at The Lights in Andover, together with an all age community workshop which replicated some of the activities enjoyed during the workshops.

Finding Friends A research project set up to gain an understanding the key needs, challenges, and opportunities with relation to the integration and representation of local ethnic minority groups in Test Valley’s cultural offering. Following a series of interviews and consultations with local people, the findings presented by project leads, 21 Artists, will be shared with Test Valley communities and organisations to encourage a move towards more inclusive thinking and activity in future.

Restoring Tradition

lmost exactly two years ago, in September 2019, our feature for this publication was titled ‘Restoring Former Glory’. Little did anyone know what lay ahead of us, and our eventful journey since we announced our ambitious plans back then, to upgrade and refurbish the interior and exterior of The Grosvenor, is something no one will forget in a hurry! Despite all that has been thrown at us, we are well on the way to achieving our original objectives and more, and are looking forward to restoring some wonderful traditions which have been sorely missed in the last tumultuous months. Some areas of the hotel are unrecognisable since the programme of alterations was begun. The accommodation to the rear of the hotel, which in 2019 was ‘to become luxury rooms complete with private outdoor space and a view over the gardens’, is now a set of exquisitely comfortable Garden Rooms. The gardens, which were ‘soon to be undergoing their own metamorphosis under the expert eye of local interior and garden designer Lottie Keith’ have indeed been transformed by Lottie into an oasis of colourful calm, with a new al fresco dining area, The Terrace. La Hutte, our alpine refuge, an ever-present reminder of the outdoor rule of 6, is open for the winter season on 9th December, serving raclette and fondue. Party goers, hold onto your ski hats, La Hutte is set to become the ‘après’ venue of the winter, open for lunch and supper and private parties till 31st March 2022. The ‘crucial phase of restoration to include the reconfiguration of the bar area, Hatch and Market rooms,

including the installation of a baby grand piano’ is almost complete and live music is now top of the menu! Katherine Rockhill, our professional pianist, arrived with the grand piano; when she is not performing in the West End or touring with Katherine Jenkins, she plays for our evening diners. Lucy Wroe, a talented singer/songwriter, can be heard on Saturday nights, her mellow voice and mix of own songs and well-known favourites are sure to delight. When Christmas 2020 was still on the cards, we remodelled The Danebury Room to allow residents to sink into deep sofas whilst enjoying their tea and cake over the festive period. With hopes of a normal Christmas dashed, we saved the thought, and are now delighted that the age-old tradition of Afternoon Tea is restored in the cosy wood-panelled Danebury Room. What better way to spend

a wintry afternoon than in front of an Afternoon Tea to rival that at the Ritz, accompanied by a glass or two of locally made Coates and Seely champagne?

COMMUNITY / WELLBEING New Community Cinema launches in Kings Somborne

We are delighted to announce the launch of Somborne Community Cinema, which screens its first film on Thursday 14th October. Run on a voluntary basis by a team of local cinema enthusiasts, the venture has been set up to take advantage of the impressive new audio-visual system in Kings Somborne village hall, and to bring the cinema experience into the heart of the village. A diverse range of films will be screened on the second Thursday of each month at the Village Hall, Recreation Ground, Romsey Road, Kings Somborne SO20 6PP. Doors will open at 7:15pm and films start at 8:00pm. Before the film there will be a bar serving beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks. This British period drama boasts sumptuous visuals along with some stirring performances. The story has a strong social consciousness which is still very relevant today.

Pelvic floor under pressure? Women’s health and the Pelvic Floor Leaking urine when lifting, jumping, sneezing, walking and running is a sign of leaking pressure. The body has 4 containers with different pressure systems, and maintaining the correct pressures in these areas is fundamental to the function of the organs within them. • • • •

The container of the head is maintained at a negative pressure to lift the brain in the skull allowing for its motility, circulation and drainage. The container of the chest is also maintained at a negative pressure in order to aid the suspension of the heart and lungs, and provide space for their movement. The container of the abdomen is slightly positive, as it needs a little pressure to aid digestion and excretion. The container of the pelvis is negative, to aid the suspension of the pelvic organs and reduce the downward pressure on the pelvic floor.

However, when the demands of our lifestyle outstrip our ability to adapt to it, these pressure systems are affected. Altered movement patterns, uneven loading through the body, poor posture and sedentary lifestyles contribute to increasing the pressure from above. If the head is sitting forward of the body and the shoulders are rolling forward, the upper chest becomes depressed, the upper back rounds, and the pressure rises in the thorax. The lower ribs then flare, and the belly pooches out. If the balance of the head on the neck is lost, the control of the pressure system throughout the whole body is lost. The only place for the displaced pressure to go is downwards, and it will find the weak points to ‘leak’, such as the abdominal wall or pelvic floor. Some symptoms of altered pressure gradients in the body range from stress incontinence, varicosities, congestion and hemorrhoids, to diastasis recti (abdominal wall separation) pelvic pain, painful sex, infection and infertility. So when we consider the influence of one pressure container on another, we can see that in order to treat pelvic health dysfunction, it is vital to work from the top to lighten the load going down. To do this, treatment, exercise and education must focus on the balance of the head on the thorax, the thorax on the pelvis and the even distribution of load to the hips. The diaphragm is the crossroads between the containers and its function is also critical to the organ health above and below. Therefore to stop ‘leaking pressure’ and feel strong and in control, it is vital to reestablish the pressure gradients by relearning efficient whole body movement patterns, improving breathing mechanics, improving bowel health, addressing loading imbalances and improve tone and function of the muscles of the pelvis. Only when we move away from just performing Kegel’s (pelvic floor exercises) and consider the bigger picture, is it possible to really help women long term with their pelvic health. On Wednesday 20th October 2021 Chapel Arts Studios (CAS) is opening its doors to its most ambitious exhibition yet. ‘Opening The Aviary’ takes the visitor on a multi-sensory journey of discovery, exploring the inner workings of the artist's mind as expressed externally in form and narrative. The exhibition and associated talk confront important issues of mental health and neurodivergence, exploring the art process as a way of expressing what lies deep within, both memory and imagination.

Jon Adams, Kate MccGwire, Prudence Maltby and Rosa Beiroa are the four artists exhibiting at Chapel Arts Studios. The show will be a multimedia exhibition, inspired initially by a set of drawings created by Jon Adams over the COVID lockdown. Adams’ work as a neurodivergent artist, draws on an internal dialogue, expressed in his breathtaking drawings of mythical bird-like creatures, his Covid Corvids. The work on display also features Kate MccGwire’s powerful visceral sculpture, equally subversive and seductive but thankfully, safely encased. Also Prudence Maltby, who’s drawings, inspired by deep memory, compliment the other artists' contributions thoughtfully. A short animation by Rosa Beiroa introduces us to all of the works on show, articulating the words of William Kentridge which make tangible the creative process for all. Susan Francis, curator at Chapel Arts Studios, said: ‘CAS is excited to bring together a group of artists whose output probes the workings of the artist's mind, giving form and expression to otherwise hidden or deeply subversive thoughts and imaginings.’ As part of the show, Jon Adams will be holding an interactive talk with Q & A on ‘Neurodivergence in Art’, broadcasted online and streamed live at St Mary’s Church, Andover on Tuesday 2nd November between 5.30 and 7.00 pm. n lockdown, the spare room had quietly morphed into the store room. With the annual retreat indoors for the darker, colder months under way, she decided it was time for a de-clutter. It was good for the psyche - any number of books and programmes said so. She’d sell some bits on social media; it was simple and fun. Allegedly. And it was simple. A few photos, a couple of sentences and ‘bingo’. Or rather ‘ping-go’; her phone immediately made an entirely new sound and a message from someone appeared. “Is this still available?” She typed feverishly in reply “Yes it is” and excitedly awaited a response. Nothing.. A short while later.. Ping. “Is this still available?” Same question, different item, different someone. Again she replied in the affirmative and “Would you take £20?” came the swift rejoinder. It was a bit less than she’d listed it for. And whoever it was hadn’t yet clapped eyes on it, but, well, she did want it gone.. “Yes, OK” she messaged and waited. And waited. Internet tumbleweed.. Over the next week, various enquiries ensued. Some got as far as “Please give your full address and postcode”. One even arranged a time to collect something and asked for her mobile number. She waited about. They never turned up. “It is simple, but I’m not feeling the fun” she complained to Himself. He shrugged his shoulders. “P’raps it’s a case of horses for courses. Personally, I’m in favour of a good old car boot sale for a good old clear out. People come, they look, they buy stuff. Or they don’t.. Very black and white.” Good point, well made. So Sunday morning found them in a chilly, dewy field before the sun had even risen. The last car boot of the season. With a flask of hot coffee and some sustaining bacon sandwiches, they parked and Himself opened the tailgate. A horde emerged from the gloom, brandishing torches and pushing forward, hands in the boxes, peering into the bags. “Got any records mate?” “Old tools?” “Anything military?” “Designer labels?” Himself was trying to fend off the arms reaching past him, whilst answering their questions: “Wait a minute… I’ll have a look… Yes, I

think so…. No… Now put that back…. STOP!!!!” Himself finally lost it. Sheepishly, the chastised horde rediscovered their manners, retreated to a safe distance and waited whilst he put up a table and she unpacked some boxes. The morning dragged on and not without incident. Two dealers fought over an old teddy bear; a black eye was given. A couple of things were pinched. Money changed hands – usually less than they’d asked for and no-one had the correct change or their own bags. There was also some slight confusion over Himself’s favourite camping chair: “How much is the chair mate?” “The chair I’m sitting on?” “Yes.” “It’s not for sale.” “Why not?” “Because I’m sitting on it…?” There were mutterings as the chap wandered off. But Himself, a veteran of many a boot sale had come prepared for most eventualities and was largely un-phased. And undeniably, the car was going to be pretty empty going home. She’d just waved goodbye to a large mirror, when her phone pinged. The now-familiar message “Is this still available?” appeared. Coincidentally, it was for the self-same mirror, but before she could respond with a ‘No’, the virtual clamouring came thick and fast. “Will you take £15?” “What’s your postcode.” “Give me your mobile.” “Can I collect tomorrow?” Panicking, she opened the app and swiftly marked it as ‘SOLD’. By midday they’d sold a lot and had enough. The coffee and sandwiches were a distant memory and the footfall had tailed off. It didn’t take long to pack up and leave with their jar of loot. “Go back via the recycling centre shall we?” Himself raised his eyebrows and glanced sideways at her. She nodded wearily. But one thing made it home with them; a small reproduction chest of drawers, much too nice to dump. Although she’d reduced the price from a score, to a tenner, to a fiver, there’d been no takers at the car boot. Her sales banter of “would look great if you chalk paint it” cut no mustard. She gave it one last chance on the internet. That afternoon a lady messaged her who did not beat her down on price. Who offered her own mobile number and arranged a time to collect. Who arrived promptly, declared herself delighted and paid £25 with the correct notes. In response to Himself’s questioning look as she returned indoors, she said. “You’re right. Different selling arenas suit different things.” She waved the cash triumphantly. “It really is a question of horses for courses. I sold it for a pony!”

A Charity Auction in aid of the new Sports Pavilion in Broughton was huge success raising almost £15,000 thanks to lots gifted by local residents and businesses. Simple Yellow Lentil Dhal A nice winter warmer lentil dhal. In India, dal is the term used for all dried legumes, but it has also come to refer to a simple, filling stew-like preparation served with rice or flat bread. This yellow lentil dal recipe can be made with any type of lentil, just increase the cooking time 10 to 15 minutes if using black or green lentils. (serves 6)

Ingredients 2 1 3 2

tablespoons of rapeseed oil medium onion finely chopped teaspoons of ground cumin teaspoons of red chilli flakes (alternatively 1 red fresh red chilli) de-seed for less heat

2 cloves of garlic 1 teaspoon of salt 200g of rinsed yellow lentils 375ml of vegetable stock 1 teaspoon of ground tumeric

Method

Heat oil in saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir in cumin and chilli, and sauté for 1 minute. Add onion, garlic, and salt, and sauté 2 minutes more. Add lentils, vegetable broth, 2 cups water, and turmeric. Cover, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer 25 minutes, or until all the liquid has been absorbed.

Blick Mead: Exploring the First Place in the Stonehenge Landscape by Dr David Jacques

Stonehenge can justly claim to be one of the most famous prehistoric sites in the world, but much about its origins remain a mystery. Although recent archaeological investigations have revealed stunning details of the monuments that sprang up during the 4th and 3rd millennia BC less is known of the area’s ‘back story’. Since 2005, David Jacques, Senior Research Fellow in Archaeology at University of Buckingham, Fellow of the Society of the Antiquaries, has led a dig exploring a site about a mile from Stonehenge beside an ancient spring known as Blick Mead. The discovery of a Mesolithic occupation area and surface at Blick Mead about 2.5 km from Stonehenge that has well preserved and substantial Mesolithic deposits, potentially transforms our understanding of the pre-Stonehenge landscape, and its later ritual landscape. Radiocarbon dating of the remains reveals that animals were being eaten at the site between 6650-4722 BC. David’s talk will outline the latest discoveries at Blick Mead from the 2021 dig, concluding with a review of the site and its wider significance.

7 February 2022 A life of Service to Queen, comrades and country by Lieutenant General Sir Freddie Viggers KCB CMG MBE DL Lieutenant General Sir Freddie Viggers had a professional career in Germany, Northern Ireland, Bosnia-Herzegovina and was deployed to Baghdad in 2003 as the most senior British Officer on the ground following the fall of Iraq. His evidence at the Chilcott enquiry in 2009 was highly critical of the Government's strategic handling of the situation after the Regime collapsed. Sir Freddie was Adjutant General (2005-8) and often locked horns with the Ministry of Defence over resources to improve the lot of the

Soldier and their families, appealing for improved accommodation, pay and conditions and better compensation for the wounded. He also oversaw the Court Martial of 7 soldiers charged with the murder of Baha Mousa in southern Iraq. After retiring in 2009, Freddie assumed the role of Black Rod. The very public role Black Rod plays in the Palace of Westminster is well known, but the ceremonial and security responsibilities may not. Freddie was forced to retire one year later after a life-changing stroke. Freddie's talk will draw out how his life’s lessons, across a fascinating career, prepared him for both the anticipated and unanticipated events in his life.
