Watching The Detectives © LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND 2022

“You there?” Himself called from the study. “In the kitchen, cooking dinner and watching the detectives.” She replied. “Line of Duty?” she heard the interested tone in his voice; a bit of a fan, he had the complete box set. “Aussie Gold Hunters.” “Is that new? What’s the plot?” his curiosity piqued, he appeared in the doorway. “People in the Australian outback, metal detecting for nuggets of gold. Or, as they often call them, ‘little rippers’.” “Good grief.” He sounded horrified. “Out there with all those snakes, spiders and sun! And actually, they’re called ‘detectorists’, not ‘detectives’.” He paused and continued. “Um, do you like the programme? You know, them going out with their metal detectors and finding stuff ?” He was watching her closely, keenly. She sensed an ambush. “You’ve bought one, haven’t you?” she surmised. Himself looked momentarily wrong footed, but countered with “I thought it might make a good birthday present.” “Who for? Not me, I hope,” remembering her disappointment when an uncle bought her an airfix glider kit for her twelfth birthday, then locked himself away all day making it. Before crashing it on its maiden flight. “No. It’s for me.” He admitted. “From the dogs.” He added, as something of an afterthought. The spaniels looked up at the mention of the word ‘dogs’ and thumped their tails on the floor. “They do look happy with their purchase and actually, I think it would be fun. But won’t we need permission to roam about randomly digging holes on people’s land.” Himself’s face lit up “Indeed – but not on some beaches! I thought we could do a little detecting when we take the dogs to the coast for a walk.” (More enthusiastic tail thumping.) So the following weekend found them at the sea side, where the detector did just what it said on the box. When it located something metallic in the sand, it beeped. And Himself did something similar. “*Beep* rubbish, *Beep* waste of effort” he muttered as he examined the bottle top/tent peg/battery he’d just laboriously dug up. Every so often, someone would

4

approach and ask “Found any gold?” Himself would shake his head morosely and carry on, as they wished him luck. A sit on the sand and a coffee break, then the detecting reconvened with a 2p piece and a fishing weight. Until, finally.. “Good signal?” Himself’s body language told her that this one was different. He looked up with the light of fanaticism in his eyes, before they both dropped to their knees to dig. Spotting them, the spaniels returned from the surf. Determined to help, they stuck their snouts in the hole before shaking seawater in every direction. “Listen,” Himself wiped his glasses and paused in his shovelling. Failing to dodge a sandy canine kiss he whispered “if it’s something really valuable, we shouldn’t draw attention to ourselves. You’ve seen how people watch us when we’re just digging up rubbish. If they see we’ve found gold, when we come back next time, we won’t be able to move for other detectorists!” He said dramatically. She looked furtively around, expecting an audience of onlookers. No-one was paying the slightest attention to them. “OK..” She’d been mentally choreographing her ‘gold dance’, but shelving that, she imagined hordes of people marching up and down the beach. Like lockdown, but with more digging. And disappointment. “So, we need to act nonchalantly - and we ought to have a code.” He was smiling the smile that indicated his inner child had surfaced. “If it’s a gold coin, we say ‘Jack Sparrow’. And if it’s a gold watch, we say ‘White Rabbit.” Bonkers. She liked it. Joining in, her inner Tolkien surfaced “And if it’s a gold ring, we say ‘my precious’. And don’t forget that nuggets are ‘little rippers’.” The ring they eventually extracted from the deep, water and spaniel-nose-filled hole generated a moment of excitement and a passably creepy Gollum impersonation. Closer inspection revealed it was just gold plated non-precious metal. They sighed and kicked sand back into their excavations, consoled that they’d all had plenty of exercise and fresh air. Later, back at home, two tired dogs in their bed – their paws twitching in slumber, sand still clinging to their fur. “You there?” Himself called from the study. “In the kitchen, cooking dinner and watching the detectives.” She replied. “Aussie Gold Hunters?” she heard the interested tone in his voice and smiled. No, she thought, been there, done that. “Line of Duty...”

COMMUNITY / EDUCATION Over 600 students to attended EBP South’s Get Inspired Test Valley at the end March EBP South returned to the Army Flying Museum, Stockbridge, for their Get Inspired Test Valley event on the 24th March 2022. Get Inspired gives young people a chance to meet businesses from their local area and learn about the different career options available to them by taking part interactive activities which capture their imagination and give them a chance to develop their skills. Jen Laidlaw, Project Manager at EBP South said, "This event provides an exciting opportunity for students to gain an experience of what it could be like to work in different industries. It gives young people the chance to speak directly to business professionals and gain a real insight into the career options in their area.”

people about opportunities available working with local companies. The event, which was sponsored by Test Valley Borough Council, featured 13 businesses providing activities which offer a hands on way for young people to develop an understanding of the different career options in the Test Valley area. Leader of Test Valley Borough Council, Councillor Phil North, said: “We’re were really pleased to support this event, and it’s fantastic to see it return after the pandemic. Events such as these are invaluable in inspiring young people into areas of employment that can be evolving, interesting and fast-paced. These events help to support our local economy, reach our communities and support the growth and employment in Test Valley, which is why we’re proud to be a sponsor.” Young people are often not fully aware of the different job roles and career paths available to them. The event allows businesses to connect with pupils in their local area and educate them about the careers that are on their doorstep. At 2021 Get Inspired Test Valley (which was held virtually) 100% of businesses who attended said that they were given an opportunity to inform young people about their area of work and promote the opportunities within their organisation.

Over 600 Year 8 to 11 students from secondary schools across the Test Valley area attended the event which aims to inspire young

Godolphin School Students Step-Up to Fashion Project Salisbury is not normally associated with luxury fashion, but some young students from Salisbury are challenging this. Godolphin’s art students designed bespoke boots, after being inspired by an art project. Godolphin is passionate about bringing education to life. Most people struggle to learn effectively, when forced to study abstract concepts within a classroom setting. Therefore, Godolphin looks for every opportunity for students to apply their learning in real-world situations. With this in mind, Sharon Duggan, Deputy Head of Department and lead in textiles, was determined to make last year’s art project as interactive as possible. Mrs Duggan first took students on a trip to Salisbury Museum, where they made sketches of historical textile items. This was followed by a trip to the Wallace Collection in London, to experience the “An Enquiring mind” exhibition, produced by the international shoe designer, Manolo Blahnik. The 10 rooms, each with a particular theme in relation to the designer’s work, proved inspirational. When the students returned to the classroom, Mrs Duggan tasked students to design an item for a contemporary fashion line and they

10

unanimously chose to create boots. The girls then spent many hours developing concepts, producing larger pieces of fabric and making design choices. The result was the class produced an incredible range of boots, which combined classic techniques with contemporary tastes. One student, Olivia, used inlay felting techniques and machine embroidery to capture the quality of the vintage artifacts on display at the museum fusing them with more modern influences, by using vibrant colours. Another student, Lexie, took a different approach. Lexie was inspired by the delicate lacework on the costumes at Salisbury Museum. Using heat transfer techniques, lace and dissolvable fabric to impose them on her materials. Their teacher, Mrs Duggan, said: “When I’m teaching, I want it to be exciting. I want to push the boundaries all the time and challenge the girls to keep them on their toes – inspiring them to go that step further, to hunt ideas out themselves and to want to know more. “When I’m with my GCSE or A-level students, I teach them in exactly the same way I have taught first, second or third year degree students in the past. Because only then can they show their true potential and immerse themselves in a world of design and textiles and beauty. If you challenge and inspire your pupils in equal measures, I believe the sky’s the limit!” For more information on Godolphin School visit: www.godolphin.org

EDUCATION Sleep for Early Years: Routine, reassurance, soothe

Routine A night-time routine is a must. Between 1-2 hours before bed, make sure that you create a winding down system such as bath time, milky drink and snuggle time. Follow this with a calming 30 minutes in their bedroom to settle them. Having this routine establishes comfort and the awareness that it is time to settle each day. Reassurance In the 30 minutes before bed, your child may have lots of questions, especially around the ages of Reception to Year 1. Use this time to reassure them that it is normal to have worries and remind them that they are safe at home in their room, far away from harm.

A good sleeping routine enables the development of young minds and has a direct effect on happiness, alertness, and attention, says Kate Rodgers, Embley’s School Counsellor. Lack of sleep in children has been linked to issues with immune system, anxiety and depression. The recommended amount of sleep, including naps, for children up to age 5 is: • Age 4 to 12 months: 12–16 hours of sleep • Age 1 to 2 years: 11–14 hours • Age 3 to 5 years: 10–13 hours Children often voice their worries before bed, as this is a time when they are in thought and with the person they trust, and it is important that parents know the best ways to help when their child is struggling at bedtime. Kate has put together these tips to help.

Whittling, Wattling, Mud and Magic at Salisbury Cathedral School More than 150 children and their families attended Salisbury Cathedral School’s free community outdoor event behind the lake in the school grounds on Saturday 12 March 2022. Attendees participated in arts and crafts, trialled whittling and wattling, and practised survival and bushcraft skills. Younger visitors made ‘cakes’ in the mud kitchen and wands out of sticks, feathers and wool, and everyone had a turn at cooking over the campfire and creating clay faces to decorate the school’s trees. ‘It was so uplifting to see so many new faces enjoying oldfashioned outdoor fun in our school grounds. What’s better than a mud kitchen and a (well supervised) campfire for children aged between 3 and 11?’ said Clive Marriott, Head Master, Salisbury Cathedral School. ‘After all the restrictions of the pandemic, we are delighted to be able to share our hidden natural haven with so many visitors once again’.

12

Soothe Children that are left for too long to cry can develop attachment issues, and during periods of change they may need a little more soothing than they did previously. It is ok to hold, cuddle and snuggle with them if they are asking for it – make the most of it, before you know it, they’ll be older and won’t want to anymore! Other tips • Keep a regular bedtime • Use blackout blinds if seasonal changes affect sleep • Keep the bedroom quiet or use white noise to mask sounds We hope these tips were useful and remember, a well slept child is a happier, more settled one. Embley is an independent day and boarding school for girls and boys up the age of 18. Embley’s Nursery is open from 08:00-18:00, 48 weeks a year, and is based in the school’s self-contained Early Years Department, with the Prep School next door. For further information, please visit www.embley.org.uk

The day was divided into two events. Younger children, aged between 3 and 7 years, attended in the morning for a Woodland Adventure. After lunch it was the turn of 6-10 year olds for survival and bushcraft skills. Camps were created, hot dogs cooked over an open fire and a whole new fence built by the ancient method of wattling. Hosted by school staff and Wiltshire Wildlife, the day was welcoming, informative and fun. ‘It is so important for children to spend time outside in nature. They love to learn new things and if that can happen in the fresh air then so much the better!’ commented Will Frost, Head of Outdoor Learning, Salisbury Cathedral School. The activities took place in ‘Conservation Corner’, an area of the school grounds behind the lake which the school is pro-actively wilding to boost biodiversity. So far the pupils have planted more than 2,500 spring bulbs and a new orchard to support wilding. Grass in this area is only mown annually and next term will see the installation of new habitat boxes to encourage more wildlife to make a home at the school. COMMUNITY The ‘Bus of Many Things’. For the past 8 years Test Valley Arts Foundation has been the proud owner of a vintage ex-Wiltshire county council mobile library bus. It was bought at the request of artists and community groups across the Test Valley to use as a venue for mobile workshops and as a focus at outdoor events. It’s unique history, look and style drew the public to it, for them to be presented with artistic wonders and excitement from within! Over the years the bus has spent time at festivals and events as well as towns and villages all over the Test Valley and beyond. Most recently it has been an important venue for Chapel Arts Studios who used it on many occasions as key part of their operation in getting communities involved in creativity and the arts. As the years went on we held our breath when each MOT crept up only to find that this ancient beast kept going. Sadly, and for obvious reasons, the last two years has seen the beast remain stationary in a car park and its latest annual inspection revealed costs that made it prohibitive for TVAF to keep it on the road. So very sadly, we have had to let it go. No doubt you may see it on the road in future years all lively and restored and being used in a new way, but for now, we celebrate and reflect on its successes at bringing art to the communities of the Test Valley.

Andover Choral Society Andover Choral Society welcomes you once more to an evening of glorious music. This time, we're singing Mendelssohn's verse to one of history's greatest characters, Saint Paul. Rarely performed, and with a huge spectrum of choral challenge, ACS will provide you with an evening of pure joy at St Mary's Church, Andover, on Saturday 7th May from 7.30pm. Our Musical Director, Peter Ford, has adapted an otherwise lengthy and imposing work into one more suited to everyday enjoyment. With a specially commissioned orchestra, Westminster Chamber Orchestra, and professional soloists, this reduced adaptation will encourage other, particularly smaller, choirs to bring Mendelssohn's fabulous oratorio into their scope.

Public art to celebrate the platinum jubilee

The performance combines operatic drama with romantic idealism, at the same time revering past masters such as Bach and Handel. This Oratorio of Saint Paul is so well renowned it has been described as utter perfection and how music, drama and art can all come together to create a perfect balance of intrigue and beauty. ACS will provide you with precisely that. We welcome new members to join us rehearsing at Rookwood School on Wednesdays from 7.30 to 9.30pm and aim to produce two concerts annually.

Artists are being encouraged to apply for Test Valley Borough Council’s platinum jubilee public art commissions ahead of the deadline next week.

Check out our website: www.andoverchoralsociety.org.uk or contact our chairman, Frances Lynn, on lynncf35@gmail.com.

As part of the celebrations marking the 70 years’ service of Her Majesty The Queen, TVBC, along with partner organisations, is running a number of events up and down the borough throughout the year, leading up the jubilee weekend in June. As well as the celebrations, the authority has launched commissions for public artwork in public locations, yet to be determined, in both Andover and Romsey. The closure for applications is fast approaching, with a deadline of March 30. The artworks will celebrate the theme of seventy years of service to the people of the United Kingdom, the Realms and the Commonwealth and the Queen’s connections to the Test Valley. “I'm very keen to encourage anyone who is interested to apply for these commissions. These new public artworks will form an important part of our jubilee celebrations here in Test Valley. They will serve as a clear and present reminder of what Her Majesty has accomplished throughout her decades of service to the Nation. “These public artworks will feature in central locations in both towns, and are a real opportunity to pay gratitude to one of the most remarkable and longest serving monarchs in our history.”

14

Interested artists should send their applications in to the Arts Officer no later than the 30 March. Full details of the requirements and how to apply can be found in the artist brief which can be found on the council website, or by contacting the arts officer Faye Perkins fperkins@testvalley.gov.uk.

“Enjoy!” Chocolate Test Valley’s Best Kept Secret? Based in Andover, Enjoy! Chocolate is the chocolate manufacturer you have probably never heard of! It was founded in 2014 by Chris Crutchley, who wanted to open up the joy of eating fabulous chocolate to as many people as possible, regardless of dietary needs. Great-tasting free-from chocolate without compromise. Chris thinks that being able to enjoy chocolate is one of life’s greatest pleasures and should never be compromised. Unable to eat mainstream confectionery for most of his adult life due to dairy, soya and refined sugar intolerances, and finding the freefrom chocolate on the market unpalatable, Chris decided to make his own.

Free From: Chris likes to say that his chocolate is free-from everything but great taste! All Enjoy!’s product recipes and their factory are free from the 14 main allergens including nuts, dairy and gluten. They use coconut sugar in their chocolate, which Chris found he could tolerate far better than refined sugar. Chris’ own experience of food intolerances showed that sensitivities can develop in response to eating any food stuff, so he is meticulous about ingredient selection and how they’re used in the recipes. Each product contains just a few pure, natural ingredients, which minimises possible reactions whilst maximising great taste. Furthermore, making all products in their dedicated facility helps them control allergens and cross-contamination risks. Vegan: All Enjoy! products are completely plant-based and registered with the Vegan Society. Organic: Being 100% Organic is important to Enjoy! because it’s a sustainable way of sourcing ingredients. They are certified Organic by the Soil Association.

Enjoy!’s philosophy is to keep things simple. They believe chocolate tastes significantly better when simply made, with just a few organic ingredients and no hidden nasties.

Exciting range: Enjoy! started out making solid bars in different flavours, but they have since expanded their range to include filled chocolate bars, giant filled buttons, boxes of Salted Caramel chocolates and chocolate fudge. The bars are great as a self-treat, whilst their boxes of buttons, Salted Caramel chocolates and chocolate fudge come attractively packaged and are perfect as gifts.

As an engineer, Chris approached the challenge methodically, analysing ingredients and processes. In 2014, after months of wreaking havoc experimenting in the home kitchen (and near divorce according to wife Steph!), he finally created a greattasting dark chocolate bar his body could tolerate. Even better, when tested on friends and family, everyone liked it- regardless of whether they had dietary requirements or not.

Come and try for yourself! If you’re local, Enjoy!’s shop, situated at Unit 102, The Commercial Centre, Picket Piece, Andover SP11 6RU, is open for business Monday to Friday. Chris and wife Steph are happy for customers to stop by and try the chocolate for themselves! If you mention “Test Valley Forum” they’ll also give you 20% off your order. Alternatively, you can order from Enjoy!’s website with 20% off joyofenjoy.com using the voucher code:TVF20.

After discovering his talent for chocolate alchemy, Chris sought investment and Enjoy! was born. Enjoy! moved from kitchen top to their own allergen-free facility in Andover in 2015. Although their scale changed, their principles didn’t.

20

Joy For All: Enjoy!’s mission is to create indulgent treats for everyone: from the most discerning chocoholic, to eco champions, to those with tricky food needs.

You can also find Enjoy!’s products online on Amazon, or in many independent shops, supermarkets, and Holland & Barrett. joyofenjoy.com

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Earl Grey and Clementine Easter Hot Cross Bun Trifle One of my favorite Easter treats, Michelin chef Heston Blumethal’s Earl Grey and clementine hot cross buns, delicious toasted and topped with lashings of butter. Bursting with the same flavour combo of tangy clementines and smoky bergamot from the tea, and with sweet Madeira to add a touch of class, my ultimate Easter trifle is both delicious and sophisticated and is the perfect way to end your holiday feast.

For the trifle

A glass footed trifle bowl is best showing off all of the yummy layers of buns, fruit, custard, curd and cream.

Ingredients

100ml boiling water 3 Earl Grey teabags 100ml of sweet Madeira wine 5 hot cross buns gently toasted and torn roughly into one inch cubes 50g blanched, roasted and roughly chopped 600ml double cream 500ml ready-made custard

For the candied clementines

200gms caster sugar 2 clementines ( make sure the skins are tight and the fruit fresh) halved and cut into thin rounds.

For the clementine and lemon curd 130gms unsalted butter cut into cubes Grated zest and juice of three clementines Grated zest and juice of two small lemons 120gms caster sugar 1 medium free range egg, plus two yolks.

22

Method

1 Infuse the tea bags in the boiling water and add the Madeira. Leave to infuse for one hour. Make the candied oranges. This is easier to do than you might think and the result is an intense syrupy flavoured clementine for the trifle and the topping. Pour 300ml water into a pan with the caster sugar and bring to the boil. Add the clementine slices, then turn down to a medium heat and simmer for 50 minutes until softened and syrupy. Leave to cool. 2 Make the fruit curd. Heat 30g of the butter until bubbling, golden and smelling nutty. Remove from the heat, quickly adding the rest of the butter with the clementine and lemon juice and sugar. Whisk until smooth. Add the egg and the yolks and beat well. Return the pan to low heat and whisk continuously for ten minutes until you have a thick, creamy curd. Stir in the zests and leave to cool. 3 Layering the trifle…..this is the fun part! Remove the tea bags from the Madeira and water and discard. Add the syrup from the candied clementines, leaving a little remaining with the fruit. Put the buns in the base of the trifle dish spooning over all the infused liquid. Arrange over top most of the clementine slices. Meanwhile using either electric mixer or balloon whisk, whip the cream to soft holding peaks. Layer the curd over the buns and clementines and then top with the custard and finally the cream. Sprinkle the top with the toasted hazlenuts and the remaining clementine slices with the syrup.

WELLBEING Stress solutions April is Stress Awareness month, and when barely a day goes by without a sense of worry, stress, pressure or anxiety at the moment, I felt this was a timely topic to write about. We have evolved to exist primarily in the ‘thrive, rest and digest’ state, but we are being exposed to constant stressors. Our bodies cannot cope with long-term, chronic, micro-doses of stress, constantly putting us in the ‘fight or flight’ state. The barrage of information we receive, the environmental, physical, emotional and dietary loads on our body, and the pace of life we now lead is not conducive to a long, healthy and content life. There are 8 main effects of chronic stress on the body: 1 Increases whole-body inflammation 2 Biggest hormone disruptor (cortisol ‘steals’ all other hormones) • Infertility, irregular periods, early menopause, PMS 3 Wipes out gut microbiome, causes IBS, constipation and diarrhoea 4 Lowers immunity and increases risk of auto-immune conditions 5 Increases risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes 6 Increases insulin resistance leading to obesity 7 Insomnia 8 Mental health disorders, such as anxiety and depression I would also add a 9th effect: 9 The more stress you experience, the more sensitive to new stressors you become As you can see, stress is not simply tense shoulders, headaches or a grumbly tummy, it is a whole-body, physical and mental, experience. We must therefore learn how to actively manage stress, build time into the day, and prioritise stress busting solutions. The body cannot coexist in its thrive state and in its fight/flight state, they are on opposite ends of a see-saw. When the fight/flight is activated, the thrive (rest/digest) is suppressed. There are many ways to stimulate the thrive state and suppress the fight/flight, but for most people it takes a conscious decision and diarised action. I have created a table for my Womo women’s health courses, and I will share it with you here. It covers many ways to support your body into relaxation mode and enable it to fully rest, digest and thrive. I suggest picking one activity from each column and committing to doing it daily. If you’d like any more clarification on these activities or help managing your stress, please do get in touch. The next Womo course runs in June in the

Changing Gear with My Little Sudocrem Developed in Dublin all the way back in 1931, our favourite hero cream has been soothing families for 90 years. And now for all of us choosing two wheels over four wheels, My Little Sudocrem is a portable 22g size pot, to sootheon-the-go. The pandemic has seen a 45% leap in bicycle sales totalling a whopping £1 billion, according to Forbes*. An extra 1 million adults hit the cycle lane and this gear-shift trend is set to continue as with the UK’s new-found love of the outdoors. The UK has also been inspired to jump into the saddle by the amazing achievements of our most successful female Paralympian, Dame Sarah Storey, who says, “Cycling with my family brings me so much joy and I’d really love for more families to benefit from the thrill of being out on bikes together. Cycling is such an amazing feeling and it’s a really fun way of getting around. Apart from the obvious health benefits of getting out in the fresh air and being physically active, cycling is a great way to build resilience and promote independence.” My Little Sudocrem joined the family in 2018 and is ready to jump into any cycling kit to soothe the cyclist’s exposed skin. It’s been specifically designed by Sudocrem for soothing and preventative use. Its clinically-proven formulation soothes and protects delicate skin, forming a barrier against irritants and allowing the skin to maintain its natural and healthy condition. It’s ready to help calm red or irritated areas of skin, to soothe dry patches, cuts and scrapes. It’s discreet and travel-friendly because while the traditional grey 400g pot is iconic and a

26

staple in any household cabinet, we’re not going to be strapping it to the handlebars! Nick Lang, Head of UK & IE OTC marketing at Sudocrem says, “We’ve noticed that My Little Sudocrem has become popular amongst cyclists, especially to soothe ‘cyclist’s bum’. Cycling is a healthy activity that the whole family can enjoy from riding on the back of mum or dad’s bike, to stabilisers, all the way through to adulthood.” It is recommended that My Little Sudocrem is applied as frequently as required, to make the most of its soothing and healing properties, which includes zinc oxide which helps to reduce loss of fluid from the skin and protects against irritants and dry skin. Lanolin helps to soften the skin, along with lavender extract, which is renowned for its calming and restorative properties.

So, with the great British summer fast approaching, it’s time to get on yer bike and take your little pot of Sudocrem on your next big adventure! * Forbes April 21 2021 – The Bicycle Association Building On The Boom: The UK Cycling Market in 2020 and Beyond Report

Andover Trees United From Diamond Jubilee to Platinum Jubilee: Andover Trees celebrates 10 Years of Harmony Woods On Monday 7th March 2022, Andover: Local environmental organisation, Andover Trees United, celebrated a decade of tree planting at Harmony Woods, the new community woodland it initiated in the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee back in 2012. The organisation has now accomplished its founding aim to enable 10,000 children to plant 10,000 trees in 10 years and will be celebrating this achievement in the year of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Celebrations began on Thursday 17th March 2022 with an ‘End of the decade’ ceremony at Harmony Woods. Children and teachers from participating schools and community volunteers were joined by the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Nigel Atkinson Esq., and Test Valley Mayor, Mark Cooper, in a procession through the wood with flag waving and story-telling. The children planted their final trees and the proceedings culminated with the planting of an Oak tree to mark the Queen’s Platinum jubilee.

in the ground 10 years later! The children who attended will act as ambassadors for the 10,000 children who have planted over the last decade.”

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who has been part of the journey and there will be lots of opportunities over the coming months for everyone to join in the celebrations of this milestone.” Throughout the remainder of the year the organisation is delivering various projects that align with the 10 year celebrations including an exhibition at Chapel Art Studios (25 June - 23 July) of their One Ash project https://www.andovertrees.org.uk/one-ash which focuses on sustainable forestry and celebrates our wonderful Ash trees, now suffering the devastating effect of the Ash dieback disease. Wendy explains: “When we began back in 2012 the planting of Ash trees was prohibited in the UK due to the spread of dieback disease. More is now known about how the disease is spread and the moratorium has been lifted so we are delighted that, as part of our celebration on the 17th, we will be adding to the wood young Ash trees grown by volunteers from seed gathered from a single Ash tree in Glastonbury. Ash Trees have a particular significance to our town as the name Andover is derived from its pre-saxon name Anderferas or place by the Ash Tree Waters.” The organisation will be announcing further details on celebratory projects in the next few weeks.

The ceremony replicated that of the first Oak tree planted in Harmony Woods by the then Mayor of Test Valley Dorothy Baverstoke, on Monday 26th November 2012. Children from participating schools all planted their trees alongside this oak in what was then a muddy field with the majority of the houses which now make up the Augusta estate yet to be built. Wendy Davis, founder and project leader said: “We are thrilled that children are coming together once more to put the last of their trees

30

Tree planting and maintenance of the wider Diamond Wood will be ongoing but the area set aside for the children is now complete. The organisation is now launching its next phase where it will be working closely with TVBC and other landowners to find new sites where the children of Andover can continue to gift trees to their community. If you have land suitable for tree planting and would like to help Andover Trees United to continue tree planting with local school children, please get in touch. Adventures in retirement: why borrow later in life? Over 180,000 mortgages were taken out by people aged 55 and over in 2021; the highest number since records began in 2014, says UK Finance’s latest quarterly report. The average retirement age in the UK is slowly creeping upwards as many people work into their late 60s. With fewer of us paying off our mortgages ahead of retirement, it’s clear that borrowing later in life will remain a vital need for some time to come. Whether you’re on the cusp of wrapping up your career or already enjoying the fruits of your labour, the reasons for needing to borrow in retirement can be myriad. Just some of these might include: • • • • •

Purchasing your dream home Funding home or garden improvements such as a loft extension or new kitchen Helping loved ones to get onto, or move up, the property ladder Switching to a new lender or new product with different terms Relocating or downsizing
