Hat Fair is the UK’s longest running festival of outdoor arts. Founded in 1974 by Jonathan Kay, Hat Fair inspires and is inspired by the people, heritage and public spaces within the city of Winchester. Their aim is to shine a light on the city, transforming the everyday into the extraordinary.
The festival takes place every year during the first weekend of July across the historic city of Winchester. There’s something for everyone to enjoy at each year’s festival, and best of all, it’s absolutely free to attend! Initially conceived as a busking festival, Hat Fair takes its name from the tradition of the audience showing their appreciation by putting money in the hat at the end of the show.
In 2013 Hat Fair became part of Live Theatre Winchester Trust, which also runs the Theatre Royal Winchester. Bringing together a historic theatre and an outdoor arts programme in creative collaboration has allowed us to develop our artistic ambitions, relishing the opportunities this presents for encouraging talent and championing quality arts. This years hat fair will be held from Friday 5 to Sunday 7th July - Entry is free. For more information visit: www.hatfair.co.uk
Gifting money to your loved ones could make a big difference to their financial security. It could also be more effective for inheritance tax (IHT) planning purposes to gift money while you’re still alive than to pass it on when you die.
Understanding how lifetime gifts are taxed is crucial. The rules can be complex, and you could end up passing on a smaller legacy than you intended.
Some gifts are fully exempt from IHT, such as gifts between spouses or civil partners, and to charities and political parties.
Other gifts may also be exempt including:
• Annual exemption of up to £3,000 each tax year
• Weddings/civil partnerships – gifts up to £5,000 for a child, £2,500 for a grandchild, £1,000 for others
• Gifts from regular income
• Small gifts of up to £250 per person per tax year
• Gifts may include personal items (such as jewellery), property, or some shares.
You can gift up to £3,000 per tax year without it impacting on your estate’s value. This £3,000 can go to one person or be split between several people.
Any unused annual exemption can be carried forward. For example, if you used £2,000 in the last tax year, you could carry forward £1,000 to the current tax year.
For larger gifts, for example paying your grandchild’s university tuition or helping them onto the property ladder, you must survive for at least seven years for it to be tax free.
These potentially exempt transfers may reduce your IHT ‘nil-rate band’ – this is the amount you can pass on to your beneficiaries tax-free (currently £325,000). So, if you gave your child £200,000 and died within seven years, you would only be able to pass on £125,000 of your estate tax free after your death.
If you gave away more than £325,000 in the seven years before you died, anyone who received a gift above this threshold would also have to pay IHT. The rate of tax depends on the number of years between the date of the gift and your death (ranging from 8-40%)
If gifting £500,000 and dying two years later, for example, the recipient would pay £70,000 in IHT (40% of £175,000).
It’s important to keep a record of any gifts you make. This will help your estate’s executor work out what gifts you made in the seven years before you died.
Rules around lifetime gifting are complex and it’s important to seek expert advice. A financial adviser can help you pass on your wealth efficiently, taking into account your unique needs.
We live and work local to you. We would be delighted to help you and your family achieve financial clarity and stability.

Asian Hornets
I wrote an article on these pests a few years ago. It would seem that the problem is not going away, and as gardeners we should be very aware of this invasive species and the harm the can do to our wildlife, and what we should do if we come across one. Asian Hornets Are Destructive to Honey Bees with a single one being able to destroy 60 of our native bees a day. The number of confirmed nests has increased significantly over the last few years, especial in Kent and the Southern Counties. To read the full report on this please click on the link. https://ngs.org.uk/seen-an-asian-hornet-report-it/ The more people who are aware of this problem the better chance we have of at least decreasing the numbers. Doing nothing should not be an option. To this end, please pass this information on to all your and family and friends. An Asian Hornet can be identified by its very distinct markings – they’re a similar size to a European Hornet, which is two or three times the size of a common wasp, and are black with distinct yellow lower leg. Visit our Website to report sightings.
Now to something far more appealing - a chance to visit a couple of gardens during June.
Firstly the chance to enjoy four village gardens for one price.
Stockbridge Gardens
Stockbridge, SO20 6EX - Opening: Thursday 13th & Sunday 16th June from 2pm to 5pm. Admission: £10.00, children free, cashless Payments available. Four gardens will open this year in Stockbridge, offering a variety of styles and character. Trout Cottage is a small walled garden, inspiring those with small spaces and little time to achieve tranquillity and beauty. The Old Rectory has a partially walled garden with formal pond, fountain and planting near the house (not open) with a stream-side walk under trees. Shepherds House on Winton Hill with herbaceous borders, a kitchen garden and a belvedere overlooking the pond. New this year, Fishmore House is a 6 yr old garden on a ¾ acre plot. The key elements of design being planting, water and a borrowed landscape. Designed for accessibility incorporating bound gravel paths and no steps.
If you care to travel to the North of our County, we have a fabulous garden in Sherborne St John. This garden boasts a fully working restored/rebuilt water wheel which provides the electricity for the house.
Mill House
Vyne Road, Sherborne St John, RG24 9HU - Opening: Thursday 27th & Sunday 30th June 2pm to 6pm. Admission: £5.00, children free, cashless payments available. Refreshments: Home-made teas. Open views, set with mature trees and livestock, give a tranquil sense of space, with moving and static water framed in an undulating landscape.
I hope there is something here that appeals to you.
Best Wishes to you all

Long established Alresford Jewellers
D. Barker & Son is celebrating 20 years in business. Owners Damon and Liz Barker have fond memories of opening the door to their shop in West Street that first sunny morning on 1st June 2004.
‘Back then’ says Damon ‘the world really was a different place. We specialised in antique silver and jewellery and I distinctly remember our first customers bought a pair of Georgian silver candlesticks. We no longer deal in such things but I am glad to say that those first customers still come and see us regularly and, like so many of our regular visitors, they have become much valued and treasured friends.’
Much has changed. The internet has had a huge effect on retail generally but as Liz says ‘our website shows much of what we stock here but we are still very traditional. We are lucky to keep some very beautiful things and there is no substitute for seeing these with your own eyes – no matter how good your website, you can never quite catch the true beauty of nature’s wonders. And of course, specialist knowledge and expertise coupled with good customer service matter just as they always have, so in a way, not much has changed at all!
From tiny acorns mighty oaks do grow. Nowadays, with respected Gemmologist and Diamond Grader Damon always on hand to give advice, D. Barker & Son is regarded as one of the leading fine jewellers in the region with an unrivalled collection of quality diamond and coloured gemstone jewellery including many exotic gemstones & wonders sourced from across the globe including varieties not stocked anywhere else. ‘We often say that you really can see the World in on our windows’ adds Liz.
Damon says ‘It has been said by many before, I know, but Alresford really is a very special place. It is still very much an oasis in a desert of retail mediocrity – a wonderful mix of independently owned shops, each one run by passionate and respected specialists. That really is something to treasure. We’re immensely proud to have been part of this wonderful community for so long and we look forward to being a fixture here for many years to come.’
As their birthday gift to you, for every £100 spent throughout June, D. Barker & Son will gift you a £20 voucher to be spent against a future purchase.

St Swithun’s School has continued to mark their 140th anniversary with a prestigious award nomination. The school has been shortlisted for the TES Awards 2024 in the Best Use of Technology category. This recognition highlights their innovative work with Jane Portas OBE, providing comprehensive financial education to sixth-form students.
Over the last year, the Sixth Form, led by head of sixth form Nick Fyfe, participated in the development of an innovative, online financial education platform, to provide young people with a comprehensive financial life and fairness education.
St Swithun’s is passionate about developing strong, independent women with the confidence to take risks in the real world. The platform helps to equip students with
the financial capability to enable them to secure their financial wellbeing.
This exciting news comes as the school’s 140th anniversary celebrations continued with a grand 140th birthday lunch on 3 May, followed by the school dance and singing with the Prep School in Harvey Hall. Themed ‘Through the Ages, 18842024’, students and staff donned costumes representing different eras from their rich history.
Adding to the fun, a 140th Anniversary House Photo Competition encouraged students to recreate scenes from the photographic archives. These activities not only celebrated their past but also inspired a sense of community and school spirit.
Reflecting on the success of the occasion, Headmistress Jane Gandee, remarked, “The entire day reminded us of why we are proud to be at St Swithun’s as our school
community celebrated our rich heritage and our pioneering and philanthropic ethos. It was heartening to see students and staff alike embrace the fancy-dress theme and immerse themselves in the festivities. We look forward to continuing our anniversary celebrations and creating many more memories in the years to come.”

New and expectant parents were among the crowds who snapped up bargain top-quality baby and toddler clothes, toys and equipment at the NCT Winchester & District Nearly New Sale at the Badger Farm Community Centre in Winchester on Sunday 21 April, kindly sponsored by Dybles Estate Agents, Baby Squids and Liz Knowles Women’s Health & Fitness Physio.
Saving money on high street prices, as well as shopping in a more sustainable way, was the theme of the event. Parents were selling their pre-owned baby essentials to savvy shoppers wanting a cheaper alternative to paying for expensive baby products, as well as those looking to protect the environment. Over 5000 items were up for grabs
Good Festival supports The Hampshire Medical Fund Charity to purchase cutting-edge medical equipment for our local NHS hospitals.
To donate now, please text HMFGF10 (£10) or HMFGF20 (£20)
and, with a footfall over 200 shoppers, nearly £6000 worth of items were sold.
NCT Nearly New Sales are not like other secondhand children’s sales: the items are all of ‘nearly new’ quality and are carefully checked by volunteers on the day. The vast array of items are also arranged into accessible categories, enabling buyers to easily navigate through the sale while enjoying a hassle-free, department store-style shopping experience.
A small committee and a large team of 40 on-the-day volunteers worked together to set up the event. Sarah Crisp, Sale Coordinator at NCT Winchester & District, said: “We’re delighted that our Nearly New Sale was such a huge success. Local families snapped up some real bargains while supporting NCT’s vital charity work in Winchester and surrounding areas. Our volunteers made it a great event and it was also a fantastic opportunity to meet other parents from the area.”
The income generated from NCT Nearly New Sales makes a huge difference and helps the charity to support parents, fund helplines and offer local services such as baby first aid courses, breastfeeding support, a reusable nappy library and baby bundles for local parents in need.
The next sale will be held on Sunday 13 October 2024, 13:00–15:00 at Badger Farm Community Centre, Winchester. NCT members have early access to the sale at 12:45. In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare technology, perhaps no area has seen more dramatic progress in recent years than the field of hearing aids. Thanks to advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative engineering, modern hearing aids are not just amplifiers, but sophisticated devices that adapt to the complexities of everyday life.
One of the most significant developments in hearing aid technology is the integration of AI. AI algorithms continually assess various listening situations and make real-time adaptations to optimize sound quality. This means that wearers can seamlessly transition from quiet conversations to bustling city streets without missing a beat.
Furthermore, the introduction of a small chip inside the hearing aid, boasting ten times more memory than its predecessors, has revolutionized the user experience. These miniature marvels now contain sensors that detect head and body movements, allowing the microphones to function more efficiently. Imagine walking through a crowded market, and your hearing aids intuitively adjust to focus on the conversation you're having, filtering out distracting background noise.
But perhaps the most remarkable leap forward is the incorporation of "brain technology" into hearing aids. This groundbreaking approach mimics the brain's natural processes, enabling the hearing aid to process sound in noisy environments much like our own auditory system would. By leveraging AI to emulate the brain's ability to discern speech from noise, these devices provide wearers with unparalleled clarity and comprehension, even in challenging acoustic environments.
At Alresford Hearing Studio, we are dedicated to staying at the forefront of these technological advancements. By partnering with leading manufacturers and investing in ongoing training for our staff, we ensure that our patients have access to the latest innovations in hearing aid technology.
But behind every technological breakthrough, there are real people whose lives are being positively impacted. Take, for example, one of our patients who graciously shared his story. ‘Insert both Patient Reviews if possible in here’.
As we look to the future, the possibilities are truly exciting. With AI continuing to drive innovation in the field of hearing aids, we can expect even greater advancements in the years to come. From enhanced speech recognition to personalized soundscapes tailored to individual preferences, the future of hearing aid technology promises to be nothing short of revolutionary.
In conclusion, the advancements in hearing aid technology represent a new era of sound— one where individuals with hearing loss can experience the world with clarity, confidence, and connection. At Alresford Hearing Studio, we are proud to be part of this journey, empowering our patients to rediscover the joy of hearing.

Garden weed control can be challenging, let’s understand why
When I first began studying plant science I remember a tutor asking me; ‘Kenyon, when is a daffodil a weed’? The answer it seemed was simpler than I knew at the time. Weeds can be described as any plant growing in an area where it is not wanted. If that daffodil is in your rose-bed it might be considered a weed. If your lawn grass is in your flower-bed it most certainly is a weed. You must hold a suitable qualification as a paid professional applying pesticides to control weeds. If you ask your regular gardener to do it, and she doesn’t hold a licence, then you are both breaking the law. The general code of practice covering the use of pesticides states that you should attempt other forms of control before you start to use pesticides to control a weed issue.
Weeds can be relatively small, like clover, or large like thistles. They are typically fast growing and spread rapidly, impacting on plant growth in and around them. Weeds are characterised as narrow leafed, like grasses, broad-leafed, like dandelions or woody, like brambles. Large weeds can often be removed by hand, but removing smaller weeds from your lawn may require an effective pesticide.
Pesticides used for treating weeds are often called herbicides. There are two types of herbicides; selective herbicides control only certain types of weeds, typically either broad-leafed or grass-like weeds. Non-selective herbicides control and kill all plant types with which they come into contact. The application of a broad-leaf herbicide will affect and control the growth of broad-leaf plants. As such, this herbicide can usually be applied to existing lawns, but will control only broad-leaf weeds. A grass herbicide controls the growth of grass type plants. Grass herbicides can safely be applied to flower beds and will have no impact on broadleaf plants, but will control and impact grasses.
Everything we use in your garden is safe for everything that uses your garden – bees too! Some weed killers work by disrupting the fine balance of biochemical processes that occur within the plant. Often causing uncontrolled growth, twisting, thickening, elongation, and eventually death. The weed literally grows itself to death. Others target photosynthesis, the process where plants produce energy from sunlight. Blocking photosynthesis is only part of the story. When photosynthesis is blocked, highly toxic oxygen and other compounds form within the plant. These compounds rapidly destroy cell membranes, causing the weed to die.
Many selective herbicides target enzymes within plant cells. Enzymes allow complex chemical reactions to occur. When herbicide targets an enzyme it disrupts the sequence of complex chemical reactions, producing highly toxic compounds in the plant and killing
the weed. So why don’t selective herbicides kill the useful plants we are trying to grow? The main reason is because the useful plants are able to metabolise (break down) the herbicide more rapidly than the weeds, allowing them to survive.
Herbicides are most effective on actively growing plants, as the active ingredient is carried by the sap of the plant. The faster the plant is growing, the quicker the solution will be moved through the plant. Application during less active growth periods are also effective, however the results will take longer.
Weed plants fall into different families. Much like sprouts and cabbage are different plants but within the same group of plants, some weeds are in the same family group and some in different groups. Certain plant groups are susceptible to certain herbicides that other groups might not be affected by. Identifying what weed you need to kill, understanding which plant group it is in and what pesticide needs to be used to treat that specific group is the key to weed killing success. All herbicides have application rates. Much like medication you take at home has a recommended dose. Exceed the dose and you may cause issues, take too little and there may be no effect. Getting the dose right isn’t just about how much you pour out of the bottle, it’s also about how much water you add to the mix and how much of the mix is applied to the weed.
If you select the correct herbicide for the weed you aim to kill, use the correct dose rate and apply at the right time then often one application is enough. However, some weed varieties are more resilient than others. Some have thick leaf coatings or hairs that reduce the contact of the droplets of pesticide that have been sprayed on the weeds. Some weeds are persistent and are not controlled after only one application and several, consecutive applications are recommended. Applications may be necessary throughout the growing season and should continue until the weeds have been successfully controlled. Failing to do so may increase the weed’s resistance to the type of pesticide used – much like the risks of not finishing a course of antibiotics. Often additives can be used along with the pesticide to increase the efficacy of the chemicals present.
Remember, weeds are fast growing and quick to set and disperse seed. These seeds germinate to form new weeds, so regular herbicide applications are essential. It’s relatively complex, which is why you need to study for an exam to carry a licence to use pesticides. All the products we use in the garden are safe for pets and wildlife. For effective lawn weed control speak to a lawn care professional.

Red Squirrels may have passed leprosy onto humans in medieval times, according to a new study co-authored by academics from the University of Winchester. However, the cute tufty-tailed mammals do not pose a risk to modern day humans say health experts. The new study, published in Current Biology, was based on examining remains found by Winchester archaeologists at the site of a medieval leprosy hospital excavated at Magdalen Hill which has proved fertile ground for research.
Researchers analysed DNA from 25 human and 12 squirrel bone samples from the site of the hospital and a nearby pit used by furriers. The leprosy strain recovered from the medieval red squirrel bones is closer to the medieval human strains than it is to those found in the modern-day rodents, says the new study. It is the first time a link has been made between leprosy and any animal in the medieval period.
Transmission may have taken place when furriers were handling the skins of the animals. Squirrel fur was often used to line and trim clothing in the medieval period.
The report, published earlier this month, numbers among its authors Simon Roffey, Phil Marter and Heidi Dawson-Hobbis from the University of Winchester School of History, Archaeology and Philosophy alongside academics from the Institute Evolutionary Medicine at the University of Zurich, the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Basel, the Science Museum, the School of Oriental and African Studies, the Department of Archaeology at Cambridge University, the School of Archaeology at the University of Leicester, and the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology at Colorado State University.
“This is the first time that we found an animal host of leprosy in the archaeological record, which is really exciting,” said Dr Sarah Inskip from the University of Leicester, told The Guardian.
She said there would need to be more investigations into how the diseases passed between human and animals and she did not rule out the possibility that it was people who had infected squirrels in the first instance and transmission then ‘ping ponged’ back and forth.
Public Health England says that although some red squirrels do carry leprosy today there has never been a reported case of humans catching the disease from the animals and the chances of infection are very low.
The UK’s red squirrel population (around 160,000) is now far smaller than it would have been in England in the 10th and 11th centuries.
of the tranquil Upper Farm gardens, the plant fair brought a mouth-watering selection of specialist plant growers from Hampshire offering a huge choice of herbaceous plants, shrubs with particular emphasis on colour and shape, climbers, roses and herbs. Organised by Winchester Go LD’s fundraising committee, the event is a key fundraiser for the charity that enables adults with learning disabilities in the Winchester area.
The fair was opened by the charity’s patron, Lady Portal (Louisa) MBE DL. There were talks and gardening tips by expert gardener Gillian Taylor including: More colour for less work, Perfect plants for sustainable gardening and Let’s talk about Roses.
“We were thrilled with the huge turn out and an even greater selection of stalls this year,”
It's the site that keeps on giving... Simon Roffey: “It’s amazing to see how far we have come from launching the project in 2007 as a small geophysics exercise for our students, then seven years of excavation on the hospital site and countless dissertations and even a PhD.
“Now the site and the work of our staff and students is internationally recognised. We have featured on international news, TV and popular books and have, in our skeletal material, one of the most extensive collections for the study of ancient disease anywhere in the country.
“We’ve come a long way and what excites me is that our archaeological research is still continuing both on the bones and artefacts but also through our current training excavations exploring the broader sites and landscape of Morne Hill.
“It’s also wonderful, and fairly unique I would say, that all of this has involved our students at every level.”
Digs on the site began in 2008 and formed the context for the training of archaeology undergraduate students at the University in excavation and recording. Over seven years the excavations revealed evidence for more than 100 burials as well as a chapel, infirmary and almshouses. Dating of the burials and associated artefacts on the site revealed that the hospital was the earliest scientifically dated hospital in the UK and it has become one of the most comprehensively excavated leprosy hospitals in Europe.
Broadcaster Alice Roberts, presenter of TV’s Digging for Britain devoted a whole chapter to the site in her recently published book Crypt: Life, Death and Disease in the Middle Ages and Beyond.
says organiser and Chair of the fundraising Committee, Ros Nell, “with 6 plant nurseries and over 40 stall holders. We were delighted that we had well in excess of 600 people attending.
Betty Chadwick, CEO explains “We work with our members, their families and the whole community to find better and more inclusive ways of doing things and the day is a lovely example of community engagement.”

The view over the forest was breathtaking. Heathery slopes curved down the valley, and needle-strewn pine groves marched up the rising ground beyond.
It was June – the warmer, longer days had lured walkers out in numbers. Dogs of many hues and assorted breeds quartered the ground below her. With their wagging tails and wide-open panting (she liked to think ‘laughing’) mouths, they were the embodiment of boundless joy. Following their noses through the undergrowth and running, running, running… She wondered how many ticks they’d gathered, and sighed.
A man stood close by talking into his phone, as his dog ran up the path to greet him. He bent to clip a lead onto the harness. “No, I’m at the office. Got the window open, that’s why it sounds blowy..”
He winked conspiratorially up at her and went on. “Anyway, this project – yeah - just like déjà vu all over again. And meeting the deadline is a challenge,” he looked up and winked at her once more, “but we’ll swim under that hurdle when we come to it.”
She paused, wondering if she were expected to wink back. Instead, she smiled uncertainly at him and, calling her canine motley crew, she turned for home.
Later, as she started to prepare dinner, she reported her dog-walking episode to Himself. “At the office, indeed! The déjà vu thing was odd, but ‘swimming under the hurdle’ didn’t sound quite right either.”
“Maybe it’s a 21st Century evolution of ‘climbing over hurdles’ and ‘crossing that bridge when we come to it’ - with a trendy wild swimming vibe.” He remarked.
“Mmn.” She wrinkled her nose. With all the recent news about sewage in the river, she said, half to herself, “talking of that, p’raps I should wash the dogs after they’ve been wild swimming – in case there’s poo..”
Himself snatched his hand away from the dog he was stroking, a horrified look on his face.
“Poo-oor quality water, I mean..” she finished lamely.
To distract him, she announced cheerily, “I’m doing a spicy bean stew, to go with these,” and waved a packet of sausages in the air. Instantly diverted, he looked over her shoulder with interest, watching her unwrap the sausages and put them in the frying pan.
Pork products; they never failed to side-track him. Bless. She winked conspiratorially at the dogs and mentally promised them a bath.
To steer the conversation away from any further unpleasantness, she continued with their previous topic.
“I suppose our sayings, proverbs and such, will evolve, must evolve – it’s only natural. Someone on the telly was saying ‘scraping the bottom of the pot’. I can’t remember what about. Politics, probably. Anyway, it should have been ‘barrel’ not ‘pot’, but honestly - barrels? ‘Pot’ is, frankly, so much more relatable.”
Himself was washing his hands vigorously in the sink. Above the sound of running water, he said loudly, “In the village shop the other day, I overheard ‘skeletons in the cupboard’. Hardly surprising; who uses the word closet anymore?” He shrugged, dried his hands and wombled off to fill up the birdbath.
When he reappeared in the kitchen a little later, she was energetically attacking her decades-old, blue le Creuset with a wooden spoon. At his questioning look, she said breathlessly, “So now I’m quite literally scraping the bottom of the pot. And, I’ll have you know, ‘a watched pot never boils’ is a lie. I watched it AND it boiled - and now the beans are cemented to the bottom.”
“Where did the sausages go?” Himself was looking around.
“Out of the frying pan and into the air fryer. That’s a natural 21st Century evolution, because who really cooks on a fire? With a pan, I mean.” She pre-empted any claim that his throwing a burger on a BBQ three times a year was really cooking.
“They were spitting,” she added.
“Mad?” He queried.
Shaking her head she responded, “Not even slightly peeved,” and smiled back at him, dishing up dinner.
Later, when the sausages had been consumed, Himself pushed back his chair and peered into the fridge, asking hopefully, “Any pudding – did I see some in here?”
“You looking for proof? No, it’s all gone. But you can have your last bit of birthday cake..,” she offered.
“And eat it too?” He asked, just as his phone rang. Smiling, he walked out of the back door and paced around the patio for a couple of minutes before coming back into the room, still talking into his mobile. “Yes, well, it’s a challenge,” Himself gave her a wink, “but we’ll swim under that hurdle when we come to it.”
Having a flashback, she laughed - it really was like déjà vu all over again..
