Mayors Meeting September 2, 2016

Integration Strategies In the past year, more than 300 Austrian mayors attended four network meetings by the Alpbach Forum to look for common solutions to tackle the integration of refugees. Several mayors recounted in their own words how they succeeded in admitting refugees in their communities. In a participative and moderated process, they exchanged know-how and ideas and co-created an extensive handbook available at www.alpbach.org. On September 2 a fifth mayors meeting will examine successful strategies for long-term integration. Integrationsstrategien Mehr als 300 B端rgermeisterinnen und B端rgermeister tauschten im vergangenen Jahr bei vier Vernetzungstreffen des Forums Alpbach ihr Wissen und ihre Erfahrungen rund um die Integration von Asylsuchenden aus. In einem partizipativen und moderierten Prozess entstand ein Handbuch, das weiteren Gemeinden bei der Fl端chtlingsarbeit hilft (Download unter: www.alpbach.org). Am 02. September 2016 widmet sich nun das f端nfte Treffen dieser Art den langfristigen Integrationsstrategien in Gemeinden.

Standing Committee & Forum Alpbach Network The time at the European Forum Alpbach often connects scholarship holders for their whole lives. The visible expression of their sustained engagement can be seen in the now 30 alumni networks from 19 different countries, which also pull off very successful scholarship programmes. During the European Forum Alpbach, several of them will be on hand with help and advice for the participating scholarship holders in the “Standing Committee”. They organise the International Evening, fireside talks with exciting speakers and various side events. This year, the Club Alpbach Lower Austria will take the reins of the Standing Committee. Die Zeit beim Europäischen Forum Alpbach verbindet Stipendiatinnen und Stipendiaten oft ein ganzes Leben. Sichtbarer Ausdruck ihres nachhaltigen Engagements sind mittlerweile 30 Alumni-Vereine aus 19 verschiedenen Ländern, die auch sehr erfolgreiche Stipendienprogramme auf die Beine stellen. In what must be the highest lying “Fab Lab” in Europe, the Happylab invites you to test out the emancipatory potential of digital tools such as laser cutters and 3D printers in do-ityourself workshops. Dive into the world of self-sufficiency and do-it-yourself and meet the pioneers from around the world creating alternatives to the throw-away society. Erfinden funktionierte noch nie nach Rezept. “Tools of Enlightenment” Students of the two photography classes at the University of Applied Arts Vienna have worked over one semester on the theme of “New Enlightenment”, producing works of art especially for Alpbach. “Feel Dementia.” An Artistic Intervention „Feel Dementia.“ Eine künstlerische Intervention In Europe, about 10 million people are currently suffering from dementia; by 2050 it will be twice as many. Using changes to visual and auditory perception, the artistic intervention in public space gives healthy people the opportunity to experience disorientation, uncertainty and overstimulation. In Europa sind derzeit ca. 10 Millionen Menschen an Demenz erkrankt, 2050 werden es doppelt so viele sein. Rimini Protokoll, a theatre collective from Germany and Switzerland, finds and creates productions not just for the theatre. In this project, the abstract idea of Europe is brought into people's homes - and for the first time into a small Alpine village! 15 people are part of each production, in which individuals' stories are woven together with the machinery of politics. Das schweizerisch-deutsche Theater-Kollektiv findet und erfindet Inszenierungen nicht nur für das Theater. Mit diesem Projekt bringt es die abstrakte Idee Europa in private Haushalte - erstmals auch in ein Bergdorf! “The Great Sun, an Unleashed Horse” „Die riesige Sonne, ein entfesseltes Pferd“ Enlightment stands for tolerance in encountering the alien and unknown. Nevertheless, the idea of Islam as an enemy has taken over the common mind. The performance gambles with such concepts, leads to Bosnia and Srebrenica, to Sufi-ecstasy and the adrenaline-rush of illegal graffiti. As a vivid, accelerating canon this multimedia composition combines literature, voice and music. Aufklärung bedeutet Toleranz in Begegnung mit dem scheinbar Fremden und Anderen. Wie sehr aber in Feindbildern gedacht wird, zeigt sich im gegenwärtigen Umgang mit dem Islam. Die Performance spielt mit derartiger Propaganda, führt nach Bosnien und Srebrenica, in Sufi-Ekstase und in den Adrenalin-Kick illegaler Graffitis. This smartness is closely related to the soaring availability of computing power and the broad possibilities of digital real-time interconnection. To systematically develop, manage, control and optimise these systems, a deep understanding in systems theory and cybernetics is indispensable. Experts discuss the role of cybernetics as a driving force in the development of advanced manufacturing and energy systems. Wir leben in einer Zeit, in der Maschinen, Produktionsanlagen und Elektrizitätsnetze zunehmend „intelligenter“ werden. Complexity and the New Enlightenment Komplexität und die neue Aufklärung Humanity is increasingly interconnected and the planet is becoming ever harder to maintain as a stable place for our species. Increased complexity offers both tremendous potential and threat to our survival. Does this mean that we are heading for a new era of self-inflicted immaturity? In this panel we want to discuss if science can offer strategies to avoid new dangers and what science can contribute to the “New Enlightenment”. “The Walk of Our Life” “The Walk of Our Life” took Simon Niggli (Switzerland) and Christoph Obmascher (Alpbach) on foot from St. Christoph to China. Together they covered a distance of more than 7,000 km. In a talk with journalist Hanna Molden they report on their experiences and show pictures from their exceptional journey. „The Walk of Our Life“ führte den Schweizer Simon Niggli und den Alpbacher Christoph Obmascher von St. Christoph aus zu Fuss bis nach China. Mehr als 7.000 km legten die beiden zurück. Im Gespräch mit der Journalistin Hanna Molden berichten sie von ihren Erfahrungen und zeigen Videoausschnitte von ihrer außergewöhnlichen Reise. KAL BAND Rock’n’Roma Kal (meaning “black” in Romani) is a world music Romani band from Serbia. They play a mix of traditional Balkan Roma music featuring elements of tango and influences from Middle Eastern, Turkish and even Jamaican music. The band is also politically and socially engaged, fighting prejudice and anti-Roma sentiment. Kal („schwarz“ in Romanes) ist eine serbische Roma-Band. “Judgment in Hungary” In 2008 and 2009, a group of Hungarian right-wing extremists committed a series of attacks on random members of the Roma community. Six people were killed and another five were injured. The trial of the four suspects lasted two-and-a-half years. The 167 days of interrogations were documented by Eszter Hajdú as the only filmmaker in the courtroom. Will the Hungarian state protect the Roma? Can they trust in the Hungarian justice system? Eszter Hajdú not only filmed the trial but created a memorial to the victims. 2008 und 2009 attakierte eine Gruppe rechtsextremistischer Ungarn Mitglieder der Roma-Community. Sechs Personen wurden ermordet und fünf weitere verletzt. Der Prozess gegen die Verdächtigen dauerte 2,5 Jahre. Eszter Hajdú begleitete als einzige Filmemmacherin im Gerichtssaal die 167 Tage der Einvernahme. Wird der ungarische Staat die Roma schützen? Können diese dem ungarischen Rechtssystem vertrauen? The access badge received upon registration entitles you to participate in the events of the European Forum Alpbach 2016 during the indicated period. The badge has to be carried visibly and is not transferable. Please return the badge to the registration desk upon your departure, so that we can ensure its environmentally-friendly re-use. ALPBACH BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT

From and to Alpbach there is a daily public bus line (bus line 4074), as well as a free shuttle service (from Wörgl via Alpbach to Inneralpbach). In addition, there is a free night shuttle from Böglerhof bus-stop to Inneralpbach-Reith-Brixlegg-Kramsach. The shuttle service is offered free of charge thanks to the support of our partner ÖBB-Postbus GmbH. Upon registration at your accommodation you will receive the “Alpbachtal Seenland Card” which enables you to use the public bus free of charge during the entire duration of the Forum. The Alpbach cab company Taxi Moser offers special rates to the participants of the European Forum Alpbach. We offer professional childcare for children from the age of 2 to 14 whose parents are registered participants in the European Forum Alpbach. The plenary sessions take place in the Congress Centrum Alpbach. The breakout sessions are held in the Alpbach Secondary School (Hauptschule) and in different hotels. For further information regarding the venues, please observe the current programmes mentioned above. Most plenary sessions taking place in the Erwin-Schrödinger-Saal, Elisabeth-Herz-Kremenak-Saal and the Liechtenstein-Hayek-Saal are translated simultaneously into English and German. Earphones and receivers can be obtained at the door – please hand them back after the plenary session. Our special thanks go to the interpreters who, out of their affinity to the Forum, kindly forego their usual fee and instead translate for a small daily compensation.
