Europe between conflict and cooperation Now more than ever, we recognise the importance of holding our conflicts in a civilised way and designing our cooperations fairly. Both form the basis for expanding peace, prosperity, democracy and sustainability. We’re seeing cooperation becoming stronger on many levels, but at the same time political, social and ecological conflicts are intensifying. The European Forum Alpbach 2017 focuses on these tensions. How can we live with conflicts? How can they be resolved? Do we need a new culture of contention? What kinds of cooperation strengthen society and what kinds weaken it? Growing Ideas for the Europe of Tomorrow The European Forum Alpbach brings together people from all countries, generations and disciplines who are hungry for knowledge. In amongst them are over seven hundred young scholarship holders from over 80 countries – who come to Alpbach to bring in their perspective and return home with suitcases bursting with constructive ideas. Together with international partners, the European Forum Alpbach Foundation provides scholarships for hundreds of outstanding young people from all over the world to attend the programme for three weeks. You can ﬁnd the names of our partners in the sponsorship section on page 128. A full scholarship of EUR 1,500 covers participation, accommodation and pocket money. Die Zeit beim Europäischen Forum Alpbach verbindet Stipendiatinnen und Stipendiaten oft ein ganzes Leben. Standing Committee & Forum Alpbach Network The time at the European Forum Alpbach often connects scholarship holders for their whole lives. The visible expression of their sustained engagement can be seen in the now 32 alumni networks from 23 different countries, which also pull off very successful scholarship programmes. During the European Forum Alpbach, several of them will be on hand with help and advice for the participating scholarship holders in the “Standing Committee”. They organise the International Evening, ﬁreside talks with exciting speakers and various side events. This year, the Initiative Group Alpbach Vienna will take the reins of the Standing Committee.

The Summit of Emerging Leaders – Alpbach in Motion Alpbach in Motion connects committed people from various business backgrounds – from start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises, social enterprises and the creative industries – to impart knowledge of structural problems and to spark new ideas. As an incubator for new leadership, Alpbach in Motion aims to encourage its young leaders to bring change and new ways of acting into their industries and networks. Join members of the Alpbach in Motion group for an Alpbach hike on the topic “Resources – from Conﬂict Potential to Potential Innovation” on August 31, 2017, early morning. „Alpbach in Motion“ verbindet zwischen 28. und 30. August 2017 aufstrebende Menschen aus allen Bereichen der Wirtschaft – von GründerInnen und KleinunternehmerInnen der Kreativwirtschaft bis zu MitarbeiterInnen großer Konzerne – um Wissen über ökonomische Herausforderungen auszutauschen und neue Ideen zu entwickeln. Im Mittelpunkt stehen Fragen zur Zukunft von Management und Leadership. „Alpbach in Motion“ vermittelt Kompetenzen und Erfahrungen, um Innovation und Wandel im eigenen Unternehmen einleiten zu können. Arbeitstreffen im Herzen der Alpen Das Europäische Forum Alpbach vernetzt Menschen, die in Wissenschaft, Politik, Wirtschaft und Zivilgesellschaft die Zukunft Europas gestalten. Zahlreiche internationale Organisationen nützen daher die informelle und interdisziplinäre Atmosphäre Alpbachs für Arbeitstreffen und Retreats. Darüber hinaus organisiert das Europäische Forum Alpbach erstmals ein Netzwerktreffen zu „Social Impact Investing“ während der Alpbacher Finanzmarktgespräche. Die Arbeitstreffen ﬁnden in geschlossenem Rahmen statt. Schlussfolgerungen und Ergebnisse werden im Konferenzprogramm vorgestellt und diskutiert. High-Level Retreats in the Heart of the Alps The European Forum Alpbach aims to build new and inspiring networks between those who shape politics, the economy and society in Europe and beyond. Our international partners use the informal and interdisciplinary atmosphere in Alpbach for working retreats in order to find solutions to the main challenges they are facing. For the first time, the European Forum Alpbach also organised a networking meeting on “Social Impact Investing” during the Financial Market Symposium. While the working groups are by invitation only, the conclusions of the gatherings form an integral part of the conference programme. Corporate ethical action for the common good Ethik & Wirtschaft: Wie Unternehmen für das Gemeinwohl handeln können In 2017, Alpbach welcomes Ethics in Action, an initiative that brings together a selected group of religious leaders, academics, civil society representatives, and practitioners to reflect on the moral and ethical dimensions of current social problems. In this plenary, the results of this meeting are presented on the question how to induce responsibility among big international corporations, what actions are already being taken to that effect and where do the problems lie. 2017 heißt Alpbach die Initiative Ethics in Action willkommen. In this way, certain neural functions can be controlled remotely and highly complex neural circuits and processes in the brain such as thoughts, perceptions or feelings can be explored. Gravitational waves / Gravitationswellen In 2015, for the ﬁrst time researchers were able to measure a gravitational wave. The fusion of two black holes had hurled huge amounts of energy into space. All accelerated masses produce gravitational waves. The European GEO Collaboration will develop new detector technologies to further track these waves, creating completely new possibilities for space exploration. Im September 2015 konnte erstmals eine Gravitationswelle gemessen werden. Die Fusion zweier schwarzer Löcher hatte riesige Energiemengen ins Weltall geschleudert. Gravitationswellen produzieren alle beschleunigten Massen. Director Peter Wagner erects an artistic memorial for the refugees with the play “71, or The Curse of the Prime Number” – with texts by 21 authors. The European Forum Alpbach invited him to create a paraphrase of the play for the opening of the Political Symposium. Am 27. August jährt sich die Flüchtlingskatastrophe von Parndorf zum zweiten Mal. Mit dem Theaterstück „71 oder Der Fluch der Primzahl“ hat Regisseur Peter Wagner – nach Texten von 21 AutorInnen – den zu Tode gekommenen Flüchtlingen ein immaterielles Mahnmal gesetzt.
