How to Help Someone Who is Grieving
PROVIDED BY HOSPICE OF THE RED RIVER VALLEY
When a friend loses a loved one through death, we struggle to know what to do. We want to say the right thing, and hope that in so doing, we will be able to “take the pain away.” However, that’s not reality with grief. There are no “right words,” and the pain cannot “go away.” People must experience and travel through grief, which is a difficult journey for both the grieving person and his or her friends who watch.
First, we must understand that grief is a normal and natural response to loss, whether it involves the death of a loved one, job loss, divorce, loss of a home, a move or any of the other losses we inevitably experience in life.
Working through grief involves accepting the loss, experiencing the pain of that loss, and creating a different bond or relationship with the person you have lost. For example, while your father may not be physically present in your life, your relationship continues on different levels.
How to Help Someone Who is Grieving
• Give your friend permission to grieve. Emotionally, grief work is the hardest work you will ever do. In our society, we often rush people through their grief. One of the greatest gifts you can give to a grieving friend is to sit silently by his or her side and listen to “the story.” For someone who is grieving, the need to tell the story of what happened is intense and very healing. Sitting silently does not mean
listening without interest, but it does mean listening without rushing the person through a story you may have already heard. The value in telling the story is not to inform the listener of something; the value is to the storyteller. In sharing the story, the storyteller affirms what has happened and gives voice to his or her emotions.
• Accept the person’s feelings. No feelings are wrong, they simply are. Feelings of grief can sometimes overwhelm the person. Feelings of anger, guilt, sadness and loneliness can frighten both you and the grieving person, and sometimes makes grieving people wonder if they are going crazy. One of the important messages to convey is that these feelings are normal, and that the person is not alone in his or her experience. Remind the grieving
person of your support and willingness to listen to his or her feelings.
• Encourage the person to accept help from others. He or she doesn’t need to do this alone. We pride ourselves in being self-sufficient, but remind the person that we all need help from time to time. This is especially true during a time of loss.
• Do something for the grieving friend. Mow the lawn, shovel the walk or bring over a meal. Instead of a broad offer of help, a better approach is to offer a specific errand or task you can do. Instead of saying, “call me if you need anything,” say “I’d like to bring a meal over, would tonight work for you?”
Remember that the person is flooded with emotions and practical things to be done. His or her ability to prioritize and reach out may be stretched to the limit.
• Encourage the grieving person to pray, talk to the person who has died, and verbalize his or her feelings. Writing letters to the deceased, journaling or visiting the grave are all ways to allow feelings to have a voice. That voice is healing in the grief process.
• Don’t worry about saying the right thing. There are no magic answers or words. You can’t take the pain away or keep the person from suffering. However, you can keep him or her from suffering alone. Ira Byock, M.D., author of the book “Dying Well,” says that 80 percent is just showing up, so simply show up.
• Listen without judgment. Remember that every loss is unique, and the experience is based on a variety of factors. Who died, how, what the relationship was with the deceased, religious and cultural background, gender, other stresses in the grieving person’s life—all of these factors will influence the grief experience, and may be unknown to you. Listen without judgment and criticism. No one needs a critic; we all need a friend.
• Avoid clichés. The intent of most clichés is to suppress the grief response. “Big boys don’t cry” and “It was God’s will” do not encourage people to continue voicing their feelings. Without a voice, grief work is delayed. Instead, offer reality. If you feel helpless, admit you don’t have the answers, “I’m not sure what to say or do, but I want you to know that I am here and I care about you.”
• Encourage the person to reminisce. Sharing stories and memories is very healing, and encourages the grief process.
• Remember the value of presence. You may leave the house of a friend feeling like you said and did very little, but your presence spoke volumes. Remember—be there.
For those interested in learning more about common grief reactions and how to support someone who is grieving, Hospice of the Red River Valley is hosting a Lunch and Learn event on January 14, 2025. Led by Jennifer Messelt, LMSW, LGSW, a Grief Specialist with Hospice of the Red River Valley, the session is titled "How to Help Someone Who is Grieving." The event is free and open to the public, with 1 CEU credit available for North Dakota social workers. To register for this virtual event, visit: https://bit.ly/4iPYTzI. A HOSPITAL DESIGNED FOR RECOVERY
Would you like to live in an intergenerational home?
Today, buying a home is becoming increasingly difficult. As many people are giving up on their dream of owning a home, others are coming up with creative strategies to make it work. This is particularly true of families choosing to buy or build intergenerational or bigenerational homes.
It's a win-win situation
Sharing a property—and a mortgage—has many advantages. The first is obviously financial, an aspect that benefits grandparents, parents and children alike.
Living closely creates a sense of security. Knowing that your loved ones are only a knock on the door away is incredibly
reassuring. In an intergenerational home, you get to strengthen your bonds every day. Grandparents can watch their grandchildren grow, play with them and be there for them whenever they need.
Finally, living with several people under the same roof means everyone can contribute based on their strengths and abilities. For example, one family member could take care of the yard, another could handle renovations and another could do the grocery shopping.
In short, despite its challenges, this lifestyle offers a fantastic chance to save time and money while enhancing everyone’s overall well-being.
Are you taking care of your heart health?
Did you know that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States? One person dies every 33 seconds from a heart condition. In honor of Heart Month this February, take the time to remember the importance of taking care of your heart every single day.
What are the signs to look out for?
Many signs can indicate that you may be suffering from heart disease or at risk of a heart attack. Some of the most common signs include:
• Tightness, sharp pain or a feeling of heaviness in the chest
• Discomfort in other parts of the upper body, like the neck, jaw, shoulders, arms and back
• Shortness of breath
• Profuse sweating
• Nausea
• Dizziness
It’s important to note that the signs may be more subtle in women. For example,
women may also feel fatigued, have trouble sleeping, experience chest discomfort similar to heartburn and deal with heightened anxiety.
How to reduce the risks
Regular medical check-ups are crucial for your overall well-being. Managing health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol early on can significantly lower your risk of heart disease.
Healthy lifestyle habits are also crucial to tipping the odds in your favor. For example, you should:
• Learn to manage stress
• Get enough sleep
• Be physically active
• Limit alcohol consumption
• Eat healthy and avoid ultraprocessed foods
• Quit smoking
Do you think you may be suffering from heart disease? Make an appointment with your doctor today.
Are you an older adult? Take good care of your feet!
Did you know that, according to the the American Geriatrics Society, one-third of older adults have foot pain, stiffness or aching feet? Discover why foot health becomes even more crucial as you age.
Age-related changes
As you age, it’s common to encounter challenges like arthritis, decreased mobility and fragile skin, all of which can impact the health of your feet. Dealing with foot pain can make it tough to maintain proper hygiene and limit your ability to stay active. If you can’t manage your foot care on your own, it’s important to seek professional help.
Care options
If you’re an older adult, you can visit several health professionals for support.
For example, podiatrists specialize in treating foot diseases and can perform surgical procedures to alleviate discomfort. Additionally, orthotist-prosthetists create custom devices tailored to the unique needs of older individuals, whether it’s to address orthopedic issues or replace a missing limb.
Older adults can also benefit from the expertise of a specially trained nurse who can provide professional podiatric care. They can clean and trim nails, correct their curvature to prevent ingrown toenails and provide other therapeutic care. These services are essential for maintaining optimal foot health, especially for seniors.
Do you need to consult a professional? Talk to your family doctor or call your local health line to find the appropriate resources.

Take care of your dog this winter
Are you a proud dog owner or considering bringing an adorable pup into your family?
The winter weather demands that you take certain precautions to protect your pet’s health and well-being. Keep these essential tips in mind to help your pet stay safe and sound during the cold season.
Cold hardiness
Before braving sub-zero temperatures with your pooch, you must consider your dog’s breed, age and health. For example, a robust four-year-old Samoyed can often handle the cold, but a little 16-year-old Chihuahua with heart disease is a different story. If you have a dog that may struggle in the cold, it’s best to limit its time outdoors or avoid taking it out altogether.
Does your dog have short hair? A warm coat is a must for comfort. Talk to your vet if you have any questions about your faithful friend’s cold hardiness.
Toxic substances
In winter, your dog risks stepping in toxic de-icing salts or antifreeze, which can be harmful or even fatal if ingested. One way to keep your pet safe is by using dog boots or washing its paws as soon as you get home.
Metal posts
Many dogs find the metal posts of fences androad signs irresistible, but licking them can be dangerous. Your dog’s tongue could stick to the metal and suffer injury. Keep your pet on a leash and steer clear of metal structures to keep it safe and happy.
Have a great winter with your furry friend!
Is it too cold to take Fido for a walk? Make sure your dog can run around and expend excess energy indoors. Visit a local pet store to find toys to keep your pet stimulated and entertained for hours!

The Cure for Women: Dr. Mary Putnam
Jacobi and the Challenge to Victorian Medicine That Changed Women's Lives Forever
by Lydia Reeder
PRODUCT DETAILS
Hardcover | $24.11
December 3, 2024 | 336 Pages
How Victorian male doctors used false science to argue that women were unfit for anything but motherhood―and the brilliant doctor who defied them
After Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to graduate from medical school, more women demanded a chance to study medicine. Barred entrance to universities like Harvard, women built their own first-rate medical schools and hospitals. Their success spurred a chilling backlash from elite, white male physicians who were obsessed with eugenics and the propagation of the white race.
Distorting Darwin’s evolution theory, these haughty physicians proclaimed in bestselling books that women should never be allowed to attend college or enter a profession because their menstrual cycles made them perpetually sick. Motherhood was their constitution and duty.
CABIN: Off the Grid Adventures with a Clueless Craftsman
by Patrick Hutchinson PRODUCT DETAILS
Hardcover | $20.30
December 3, 2024 | 304 Pages
A memoir of the author's journey from an office job to restoring a cabin in the Pacific Northwest, based on his wildly popular Outside Magazine piece.
Wit’s End isn’t just a state of mind. It’s the name of a gravel road, the address of a run-down off-the-grid cabin, 120 shabby square feet of fixerupper Patrick Hutchison purchased on a whim in the mossy woods of the Cascade Mountains in Washington state.
To say Hutchison didn’t know what he was getting into is no more an exaggeration than to say he’s a man with nearly zero carpentry skills. Well, used to be. You can learn a lot over six years of renovations.
CABIN is the story of those renovations, but it's also a love story; of a place, of possibilities, and of the process of construction, of seeing what could be instead of what is. It is a book for those who know what it’s like to bite off more than you can chew, or who desperately wish to.

Family businesses are not immune to challenges
In every industry, small and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs) are adapting to meet the many challenges of today’s business landscape. Family businesses are no exception to this trend. In fact, they face unique challenges due to the close relationships among their managers, whether they’re partners or family members.
Resistance to change
Young professionals often have fresh ideas and want to modernize long-standing business practices. This can lead to heated discussions. Although this generational clash isn’t exclusive to family-run businesses, it does add an extra layer of emotion to the mix.
For this reason, everyone involved in running a family business must show empathy, openness and patience. These qualities ensure the company can change and adapt.
Interpersonal conflicts
In family businesses, personal issues between family members like brothers and sisters, mothers and sons or spouses can spill over into business operations. This can affect productivity and success. Avoiding conflicts over succession or power struggles requires a leadership style that recognizes everyone’s strengths and promotes consensus-building.
Similarly, balancing work and family life while running a business can be a challenge. It’s often hard to keep these two aspects of life separate on a day-to-day basis.
To keep a family business profitable and prosperous, hiring talented individuals from outside the family is essential. Their professionalism, skills and outside perspective can help keep the family dynamics in balance.
Are you in a situation where someone is asking you to be their co-signer for a bank loan? It’s common for people to turn to family members for this kind of support. Take the following considerations into account before deciding whether to cosign for a loved one:
• Co-signing a loan for someone else can impact your finances. Until the loan is fully repaid, it may be harder for you to get credit for yourself.
• If the family member you’re endorsing falls behind on payments, your credit
rating is affected just as if you were solely responsible for the debt.
• If payments continue to fall behind or the person declares bankruptcy, you could be held accountable for repaying the entire loan.
What should you do? Before agreeing to endorse a family member, find out about the potential penalties associated with the loan. Above all, make sure that the person you’re dealing with is serious and financially responsible.
Talk to an expert for more advice.
Black female leaders who will inspire you
February is Black History Month. It’s the perfect opportunity to honor the remarkable contributions of Black women who are paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable America. Here are five leaders making waves today:
1. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson is the first Black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, appointed in 2022. An advocate for justice and equality, she has become a trailblazer in American
law and given a powerful voice to underrepresented communities.
2. Ijeoma Oluo is a celebrated American writer and the author of So You Want to Talk About Race, a New York Times best seller. Her work sparks crucial conversations on dismantling racial inequality and has helped many confront and understand systemic racism.
3. Cori Bush is a former nurse and activist who has served on the U.S. House of
Representatives. She is a vocal advocate for policies on police reform, healthcare reform and affordable housing. Bush is dedicated to serving marginalized communities and advancing social justice through policy.
4. Dr. Sharon Knight is a race and social justice activist with expertise in culturally responsible leadership. Her work emphasizes the importance of inclusivity and equity in educational spaces and leadership roles.
5. Maya Manus is a community organizer and social justice advocate. She aims to promote policies that address housing, healthcare and racial equity. Manus is focused on amplifying the voices of marginalized communities and pushing for systemic changes.
This Black History Month, celebrating these leaders is an excellent reminder of the ongoing work for equality and the power of representation in creating a more just society.

Pottery: find your inner peace
Are you looking for an activity that improves your dexterity and reduces stress? Pottery classes have been gaining popularity, and for good reason. Find out why.
Mindfulness practice
Pottery involves shaping clay into functional or decorative objects, often using a potter’s wheel. This process requires focus and attention to detail, making it an ideal mindfulness activity. Research has shown that pottery can help combat anxiety and depression, offering a therapeutic escape from everyday stress.
Sense of accomplishment
The beauty of pottery lies in its tangible results. After shaping, drying and firing,
your creation comes to life as an object you can use. The sense of accomplishment that follows not only boosts your mood but also contributes to your overall well-being.
Accessible to all
The great thing about pottery is that it’s suitable for everyone, whether you’re a child, adult, beginner or seasoned pro. It’s even suitable for expectant mothers and parents of young children, offering a soothing and rewarding experience.
Do you want to get started? Sign up for an individual, group or family pottery class and enjoy this Zen-like experience all year round.
Seniors: A visit to the museum is good for your health
NEWSPAPER TOOLBOX
Healthy aging isn’t just about eating right and exercising. It’s about embracing a full and enriching lifestyle. From staying active and socializing to getting a good night’s sleep, every aspect counts. And let’s not forget the joy of visiting an art museum. The benefits of this cultural activity are so numerous that some doctors even prescribe it to their senior patients.
Tangible benefits
Wandering through an art museum, whether in person or virtually, to admire the creations of talented artists is truly uplifting. This activity is especially beneficial for older adults dealing with chronic illnesses, such as hypertension, diabetes, neurological issues, cognitive impairment or mental health challenges.
The World Health Organization (WHO) published a report revealing the positive
impact of artistic and cultural activities on health and well-being. In fact, extensive research conducted in England found that individuals who frequently visit cultural venues like museums have a lower risk of developing dementia and depression by half.
Exploring art in a museum has been shown to have a calming effect on older individuals, leading to reduced blood pressure, lower heart rate and decreased stress levels. In other words, visiting a museum can help relax your body and mind.
Whether you’re browsing the halls of a museum on your own or with your loved ones, whether in person or from the comfort of your home on a computer or tablet, you’ve got everything to gain by immersing yourself in the world of art. When’s your next museum visit?
Is loneliness getting you down?
Feeling lonely? It’s not just about being physically alone. You can feel lonely even when surrounded by others. This emotion can be caused by a recent breakup, the loss of someone important in your life or simply a sense of being out of place in a social group.
Winning strategies
If loneliness is getting the better of you, you may be better able to cope by trying these strategies:
• Avoid comparing yourself to others, especially the people you see on social media
• Be patient during times of change, such as moving to a new place or starting a new job
• Embrace your alone time by picking up a new hobby you enjoy
• Work on building your social connections, maybe by joining a club or group
If you need help dealing with feelings of loneliness, don’t hesitate to seek help from mental health professionals and resources. You’re not alone in this!
