How to stay mentally sharp after retirement

If asked to describe how they envision retirement, many professionals might reference travel, time spent with grandchildren and various recreational pursuits. Few, if any, would mention cognitive decline. However, cognitive decline poses a significant threat to aging men and women, especially during retirement. Researchers have long since recognized that certain cognitive abilities begin to decline with advanced age, even among elderly individuals who are healthy. However, despite that decline, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that dementias like Alzheimer’s disease are not an inevitable part of aging. In fact, the CDC estimates that as many as 40 percent of dementia cases may be prevented or delayed. In addition, the CDC reports that it’s not uncommon for routine memory, skills and knowledge to stabilize or even improve as the brain ages. That’s good news for retirees who want to spend their post-work life

pursuing their passions and hobbies. Individuals also can embrace some strategies to stay mentally sharp in retirement.

• Consider delaying retirement. Even if early retirement is a dream, it might be better to work a little longer than you had

planned. A 2021 study published in the journal SSM - Population Health found that postponed retirement is beneficial to cognitive function for all genders, races/ethnicities, educational levels, and professional status. The study reported that

How to talk to an elderly

Do you have an elderly family member whose driving has become dangerous? If so, telling them you fear for their safety can be difficult. Here are a few tips to help you broach this sensitive subject.

Give examples

Prepare a list of your relative’s risky driving activities. For example, not coming to a complete stop at an intersection or driving the wrong way down a one-way street. You can use these examples to gently question your loved one and determine whether

they’ve forgotten the rules of the road or if their vision, hearing or reflexes have deteriorated with age. If needed, you can suggest they consult their doctor.

Be compassionate

Losing the ability to drive can be frightening for someone who’s been doing so for decades. Therefore, approach the subject gently, and choose your words carefully. You don’t want to infantilize your loved one. Above all, be empathetic when expressing your concerns.

individuals who waited until age 67 to retire experienced less cognitive decline than those who retired prior to turning 67.

• Make exercise part of your retirement routine. A lack of structure may seem enticing to individuals who have spent decades

working. However, many retirees find that little structure loses its appeal quickly after calling it quits. When creating a new routine in retirement, include regular exercise. According to the Mayo Clinic, studies indicate that people who are physically

active are less likely to experience a decline in their mental function. So daily exercise not only gives retirees something to do, but also benefits their brains.

• Enroll in an adult education course. A 2014 study published in the journal JAMA Neurology examined the association between lifetime intellectual enrichment and cognitive decline in the older population. The study’s authors found that higher levels of latelife cognitive activity were associated with higher levels of cognition. The study’s authors concluded that lifetime intellectual enrichment might delay the onset of cognitive impairment. Retirees can look into adult learning programs at local colleges and universities to see if anything piques their interest. Retirement can be everything professionals hope it will be, especially for those who make a concerted effort to maintain optimal cognitive function after they call it a career.

relative about their driving

Offer solutions

Instead of telling your loved one they must stop driving immediately, suggest ways they can get behind the wheel more safely. For example, ask them to avoid driving in poor weather conditions or stressful situations like rush hour. This will help them maintain some of their independence.

If your relative is in complete denial and their driving is out of control, you may want to consider anonymously reporting them to your local driving authority.

4 ways to celebrate Mother’s Day with your grandmother

When it comes to elderly loved ones, a little extra attention in the form of a simple visit goes a long way. This is especially true if they have limited mobility or their social lives have diminished over the years. Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to show your grandmother how much you love her. Here are four ways to give her some joy.

1. Dust off old board games

Many elderly people grew up playing classic board games. Therefore, why not spend an afternoon challenging your grandma

to a friendly game of Scrabble or backgammon?

2. Flip through photo albums

Although less prevalent in the digital age, physical photo albums are a treasure trove of memories. Flip through a few pictures with your grandma to reminisce about days past and learn about your family’s history.

3. Offer a personalized gift

Personalized items make a great gift for grandmothers. For example, you can create a calendar featuring

family photos. This is a fun and functional gift your grandma will cherish.

4. Go bargain hunting

Many grandmothers enjoy visiting boutiques, thrift shops and bazaars to sniff out rare finds. Therefore, why not plan an outing with your grandma? You never know what hidden gems you’ll discover in your neighborhood. Grandmothers are an essential part of the family and play a significant role in the lives of their grandchildren.

Self-care Tips to be an Effective Caregiver

An American author and public speaker Jim Rohn once wrote, “One person caring for another represents life’s greatest value.” This value is instilled within many individuals who are responsible for caring for a loved one with a terminal diagnosis.

For many, it may feel like a privilege and a reward to be entrusted with such great responsibilities, and simultaneously feel overwhelming and exhausting. To be successful as a caregiver, it’s crucial to recognize the importance of self-care. Self-care means something different to each individual. For caregivers, selfcare involves physical, emotional and mental care. For some, this may mean indulging like treating yourself to a massage or manicure while for others, it may mean self-discipline, such as organizing finances, meal planning or getting up early when you want to sleep in.

The goal of self-care for caregivers is to reduce caregiver stress that can lead to burnout. With that in mind, the following tips for self-care may help caregivers achieve balance and be better equipped for the challenges of caring for their loved ones:

1. Take a Break.

As a caregiver, it’s important to take time for yourself to nourish your mind, body and soul. Whether it’s a relaxing massage or simply enjoying a cup of coffee and conversation with a dear friend, find time to take a break. Even if you can only manage a

short time away, be sure to create some space for yourself to relax and do what brings you joy. This may include:

• Take a quick nap. Ten to 20 minutes can reduce your sleep debt.

• Turn your phone off and disconnect for a bit

• Meditate

• Read a book or journal

• Go for a walk or do simple stretching to get your body moving

• Take yourself out on a date by going to a movie or treating yourself to a little pampering

2. Be Organized. Finding the time to take a break might be an obstacle. By being more organized, you may feel less stressed or be able to

find the time you need to relax and refresh. Some ideas for organization may include:

• Place important documents, such as health care directives and medical insurance information, in a safe place that others have access to when they assist you.

• Use and share a calendar for scheduled appointments or pharmacy/medication refill schedules. An electronic calendar can also send you automatic reminders to take or refill medications, or for upcoming appointments.

• Keep a list of what you need help with, so when friends and family ask how they can help you can give them something

tangible to do right away. Ideas may include: shovel the driveway, mow the lawn, grocery shop, make a meal or simply visit with your loved one so you can get out of the house.

• Meal plan, including utilizing online grocery orders and having your groceries delivered to you.

3. Identify Your Personal Support Network.

You don’t have to do this alone. A support network may include family, friends, fellow church members or privately hired caregivers. Also consider utilizing support groups to connect with those who may be assisting their loved one in navigating a similar illness.

Research what other options are available; you may contact AARP, Meals on Wheels, senior services or other community resources. Take time to learn about palliative care options and hospice care, and how it could best help your family, before you’re in a crisis situation.

5. Be Kind to Yourself.

Caregiving is hard work, and we are often the hardest on ourselves. Know that you are doing the best you can— pouring as much love and assistance as you are able to into your loved one’s care. Allow yourself some grace, time to recoup and have the courage to ask others for help.

Caregiving for a loved one through a terminal illness is a final act of love. It can be incredibly challenging and stressful, but the journey can also be filled with many beautiful moments and gratitude as you help usher your loved one through this delicate time.

Examples of organizations that offer such groups are Alzheimer’s Association, Muscular Sclerosis (MS) Association and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association. Tell your doctor that you are a caregiver and schedule regular check-ups. You may experience physical symptoms of stress that your doctor can help you manage.

4. Research Options for Additional Care.

You can do anything, not everything. There may come a time when you need help, are physically exhausted, or simply cannot perform a task your loved one needs.

If you’re caring for a critically ill loved one, we may be able to help. Learn more at hrrv.org or call 800-237-4629.

Safety upgrades for seniors’ homes

Many seniors want to spend as long as possible residing in the comforts of their own homes.

According to AARP’s 2021 “Home and Community Preferences Survey,” more than three-quarters of U.S. adults age 50 and older prefer living at home. But getting older often comes with certain deficits that may not make current living situations the safest for seniors.

Retirement Living reports that an older person is treated in an emergency room for a fall-related injury nearly once every 10 seconds. Falls cause millions of injuries and 32,000 deaths a year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Seniors may be affected by low vision,

mobility limitations, cognitive decline, balance issues, and loss of muscle strength. Certain adaptations may be necessary if seniors want to stay in their homes, particularly in older homes that have not

recently been renovated.

Change knobs to levers

This is an easy modification. Levers are much easier for individuals with arthritis or persons who lack dexterity in their

hands. Everything from doorknobs to faucet knobs can be replaced with levers.

Create zero-threshold entryways

Zero-threshold entryways, also known as flush entries, do not require crossing a lip or any raised barrier. They can appear on doorways and showers and make it easy for people who have mobility issues, as well as those using scooters, walkers and wheelchairs, to move about unencumbered.

Clear clutter/move obstructions

One inexpensive modification is to remove extraneous furniture and accessories. Such a change widens walking spaces in a

TowersatBeth

Assisted Living

room and accommodates walkers and wheelchairs. In addition, furniture can be pushed to the room’s perimeter to make moving around easier. It’s also important to remove area rugs, as they’re often tripping hazards.

Install grab rails and supports

Minimizing falls could come down to providing support in key rooms of a home. Adding grab rails in the bathroom near the toilet and in the shower can help a person use those facilities without assistance. Install a grab rail close to seating in the kitchen to add support.

Consider smart lighting

Motion-activated or darkness-activated lighting switches and

fixtures can automatically turn on lights, thereby improving visibility. Also, rocker light switches are easier to maneuver than standard toggles.

Invest in a stairlift

Single-story homes are preferable for growing older gracefully, but many seniors live in multi-story homes. A stairlift makes a multi-floor home more accessible, according to Elder, an eldercare service provider. Stairlifts make it easier to traverse staircases and reduce the risk for falls. These suggestions are just a few of the many home modifications that can help seniors safely age in place.

How to celebrate National Nurses Month

May is National Nurses Month.

The theme of this year’s celebration is Nurses Make a Difference. The spotlight is on the diversity of roles nurses play in improving people’s lives, raising awareness about the importance of nurses to the well-being of society.

To celebrate National Nurses Month, think about the impact of nurses in your life and those you love. Use social media to share pictures, stories and expressions of thanks to nurses. Every week in May will have a different area of focus:

• Week one highlights self-care. This week focuses on promoting mental and physical well-being. Challenge yourself, colleagues and friends to engage in healthier activities.

• Week two highlights recognition. This week aims to honor nurses’ critical work in hospitals and community settings.

• Week three highlights professional development. This week is centered around helping nurses excel in their profession. Think about how you can lead in your nursing career or inspire others in their professional nursing journey.

• Week four highlights community engagement. This week focuses on how you can promote nurses’ invaluable contributions by educating your community on what nurses do and by encouraging future nurses.

Moreover, the American Nurses Association (ANA) has created a free Nurses Month Toolkit, which can be downloaded on nursesmonth.org. The ANA will also host a live event entitled YOU Make a Difference on May 18 to celebrate nursing through storytelling. Follow the ANA on social media to keep up to date on nursing, including National Nurses Month.

How Memorial Day and Veterans Day are different

Both Memorial Day and Veterans Day pay tribute to the military community. However, these patriotic holidays are often confused with one another. To better honor each day’s true meaning, here’s what you should know.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is observed to honor soldiers who died in military service protecting and serving their country. Its origins date back to after the Civil War. In 1866, residents of Waterloo, New York started decorating graves of soldiers with spring flowers. In fact, Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day.

Veterans Day

Veterans Day pays tribute to Americans who served or currently serve their country. The holiday is held every year on November 11, marking the anniversary of the end of World War I. Initially called Armistice Day, the federal government changed the name of the event to Veterans Day in 1954.

Ways to celebrate Memorial Day

Many Americans celebrate the beginning of summer on Memorial Day with parties and barbecues. However, to honor the day’s

true meaning, you could:

• Hang a flag outside your house

• Attend a Memorial Day parade

• Observe a moment of silence at 3 p.m.

• Visit a military gravesite

• Watch the National Memorial Day Concert Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday in May. This year

the holiday takes place on May 30.

Did you know?

Memorial Day has its own flag etiquette. At sunrise, flags should be raised quickly to full-staff, then slowly lowered to half-staff. This is to honor soldiers who fell in the line of duty. At noon, the flag should be raised to full-staff. This is to salute all who once served.

Summer fun for active seniors

Seniors may have more time for leisure and recreation than working adults, and the summer months provide ample opportunities to get active. After months of chilly temperatures, seniors in various parts of the country may be eager to get outdoors and enjoy some fun in the sun.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults age 65 and older get at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic activity each week. There are plenty of ways for active seniors to meet this exercise goal and have some fun along the way. The following are some good starting points.

• Join or start a walking club. Walking is a great

way to stay in shape and work the mind as well. View new sights along the way by changing the route each time you go. Walking with friends can pass

the time and provide the motivation to keep going.

• Catch a sporting event. Attending a sporting event can be an entertaining way to

spend several hours, and that includes amateur and recreational sports. Catch a grandchild’s swim meet or a baseball game for an action-packed way to connect with loved ones and get out.

• Take a fishing charter. Casting a rod from a dock or pier is perfectly acceptable, but securing a spot on a fishing charter is a great way to spend hours out on the water enjoying the scenery and the sport of fishing. Plus, there’s the added benefit of enjoying the fruits of your labors by cooking the day’s catch for dinner once you arrive home.

• Be a tourist. Many cities and towns have their own tourism boards and showcase interesting spots that have historical

significance or appeal to other interests. Be a tourist for the day - even in an area with which you are familiar. Hop on a trolley or sightseeing bus to view the town as an outsider.

• Spend time swimming. Swimming is a low-impact activity that can work the body in many different ways. Devote time to doing a few laps in the pool. Or make a day of going to a lake or another body of water to wade out and enjoy some strokes in nature. Stick to swimming areas that are monitored by lifeguards for optimal safety.

• Tend to a garden. Gardening is a great form of light exercise that can produce rewarding results. If you don’t have a garden or enough space

for one at home, many neighborhoods have community gardens in which you can secure a plot.

• Visit a fair or farmer’s market. The warm weather months are a peak time for outdoor activities, including various community fairs and farmer’s markets. Chances are you can find a farmer’s market nearby most days of the week, but especially on the weekend. A town market or state fair is a great way to get out and walk, play games of chance or enjoy some live entertainment. Check your community calendar for local events. Active seniors can embrace long, warm summer days to enjoy plenty of time away from home.

Spring Cleaning Safety Tips for Seniors

In the spring, not much beats the feeling of deep cleaning from floor to ceiling.

But as we age, certain medical conditions or physical limitations might change just how much we can put into our regular springcleaning routine.

Chores like climbing ladders to clean the gutters, getting down on the floor to scrub some grout, or even pulling weeds in the garden can result in shortand long-term injury if we’re not careful or if we don’t ask for help.

When to ask for help

Maybe you’re just completely over doing these kinds of tasks around the house, and you’d rather just hire help or a trusted friend or relative to come over and do the work for you. That’s great! You’ve embraced retirement life to the fullest!

(Way to #GrowBolder!)

Or maybe you do have a health concern that has you feeling a little uneasy about using a ladder this year. Some common medical concerns that may limit our abilities to do heavy chores are:

1. Heart conditions

2. Dizziness

3. Balance issues

4. Memory concerns

5. Poor hearing or vision

6. Certain diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s

7. Common issues like arthritis, osteoporosis and orthostatic hypotension

Just because we are older than we once were doesn’t mean we can’t participate in spring cleaning activities! We’re not just older, but also wiser, which means we know that hiring or asking for assistance is the first step in creating a safe springcleaning routine.

Here are spring cleaning safety tips for those of us who still want to participate in the seasonal activities but may not be as physically capable as we once were.

Lighten the load

First off, there’s a difference between light housework and the heavy-duty chores we often embark upon as part of our spring-cleaning rituals. Cleaning out gutters, removing storm windows, scrubbing grout are all heavy housework that, as we get older, become more challenging.

What’s considered light housework?

Indoors

• De-junking a junk drawer

• Dusting easy-to-reach shelves and cabinets

• Sweeping laminate flooring

• Scrubbing out sinks

• Cleaning the refrigerator and microwave

Outdoors

• Sweeping walkways

• Planting flowers in raised garden beds

• Refilling bird seed containers

• Watering shrubs

What’s considered heavy housework?

Indoors

• Scrubbing floors and grout

• Dusting hard-to-reach areas like the top of ceiling fans or shelving

• Painting walls

• Hanging decorations

• Rearranging furniture

Outdoors

• Raking and bagging leaves

• Cleaning gutters

• Washing exterior windows

• Repairing lawn equipment

• Most yard work

Just having a better idea of what’s considered light work and heavy work is helpful to know before you create that “honey do” list.

Need extra help?

For some of us, asking family or friends for help isn’t so easy. Even though it’s not a sign of weakness or failure to ask an adult child or younger friend to come over and unclog the gutters for you, it can certainly feel like it.

One way to make it feel a little more comfortable is to follow up the chore with a favorite activity you share with the person, like watching a sports game or going out for a beer.

Sometimes, if you have the money, it can be more comfortable to hire out help for the heavy-duty chores. Common services we recommend include:

Taskrabbit – This service allows you to reserve handymen/ women to come to your house to do home repairs, assemble furniture and even install things like TV wall mounts. Like reserving an Uber ride, you are

charged after you’ve received the service from your task rabbit.

Angi – This is an online service that pairs you with a local handyman/woman or contractor that will come to your home and take care of whatever you might need. Angi will also gather quotes for you, so you know ahead of time what the cost is going to be. If the idea of inviting a stranger into your home makes you nervous, the next best advice is to ask your friends and neighbors for recommendations on handymen they might hire to do similar chores at their homes.

Ready to put spring cleaning behind you?

Maybe it’s time to #GrowBolder in style (without the housework). Eventide’s Senior Living Communities offer excellent chore-free living! Schedule a tour today.

How seniors can deter thieves and prevent muggings

Some criminals target seniors. Even if your reflexes aren’t as sharp as they used to be, the following tips can help limit your risk of being mugged.

1. Maintain good posture

When you’re running errands, make sure you exude selfconfidence. Stand up straight, look forward and try to walk at the same pace as other people.

2. Remain aware of your surroundings

To help you spot potential threats and avoid them, it’s important to be mindful of your surroundings. It’s a good

idea to briefly make eye contact with the people you pass. This will prevent potential attackers from catching you off guard. Additionally, stick to well-lit and busy areas.

3. Ensure your valuables are hidden

Keep your bags, purse and wallet close to your body, and avoid wearing jewelry, expensive watches and high-end clothing. This will make you a less attractive target for thieves.

4. Keep your distance

If someone makes an aggressive move and demands

that you give them your money, don’t try to resist. If possible, throw the thief the requested object and stay far away to protect yourself.

If a physical confrontation is unavoidable, use whatever you can to defend yourself, like your car keys, purse or cane. Aim for weak points such as the eyes, nose and knees. Moreover, make as much noise as possible by shouting or screaming.

Are you interested in learning self-defense techniques? If so, look for senior friendly courses in your area.

Grief Doesn’t Take a Holiday

Grief specialist with Hospice of the Red River Valley

Grief never takes a break—no matter the time of year or special occasion. Once grief is a part of your life, it’s a constant companion. Grief takes the holidays we’ve enjoyed for years and shapes a whole new perspective for us— one that can be mixed with both sadness and fond memories. On that note, grief has the capability and capacity to “take” a holiday. Stories from those who are grieving help us understand the rawness of the holidays when you’ve faced a loss. The same stories illustrate the collective resilience of the human spirit during difficult times, like grief:

• Grief “takes” New Year’s Eve and makes it into another passage of time instead of a new start. He’s no longer here to watch the ball drop, make his famous eggnog or

toast to midnight with our friends. I’m reminded of another holiday where he is missing; another season has passed without him. But on the other hand, grief also reminds me of all the new starts we celebrated together. Together was so good. It reminds me that grief honors the love we shared and the love that still embraces my heart.

• Grief “takes” Easter and shows me all the photos of my mom and all the frilly Easter dresses and bonnets she would sew for all the little girls. I look at my grown-up daughters and see them once again as six- and four-year-olds hunting eggs in mom and dad’s yard dressed in those frills and lace. My arms ache to feel my mom’s hug as we came through the door on Easter morning to the smells of baking ham and scalloped potatoes. Then, my 30-something daughter is throwing her arms around me as they enter my lasagnascented kitchen, and I am

reminded that my mom’s legacy is alive and well in my daughters and me.

• Grief “takes” Thanksgiving and tells me I’m alone now. I sit in a house filled with family— all people I love dearly— and grief reminds me that you, my life partner, are missing. I feel alone even though I’m physically not. There’s love all around me, a hug, a smile, a story shared about you with smiles and tears.

I’m grateful for another Thanksgiving.

• Grief “takes” Christmas – oh, how it takes Christmas! Finding the perfect gift was your gift. Your gift-finding was thought-filled and legendary. Your gifts weren’t the most expensive or wrapped in the prettiest paper, but they were the most anticipated and treasured. I miss your many gifts, dear sister. But then, here in the glow of the tree is your grandson who is so much like you. He hands me a handmade

gift he chose just for me, and you are looking at me through his eyes. Once again, you’ve given me the perfect gift!

These stories tell the tales of grief “taking” a holiday. At the same time, they tell the tales of hearts retrieving and shaping, and making the holidays something new within the old, something whole among the broken pieces, something beautiful right beside what might be seen as ugly.

Grief doesn’t take a break, a sabbatical or a vacation from broken hearts. Its intensity lessens over time as the memories quietly change from hurtful to healing. Grief becomes part of who we are, even during holidays. Our loved one’s memory and spirit lives on through every family member and friend. Each one holds a part of our loved ones inside of themselves. We get to choose how we honor that memory—with sadness or with celebration for a life

well-lived. We get to choose how we claim the life that was and the memories we still hold.

It’s true that holidays and traditions can be difficult amid grief. Sometimes, we need to find new traditions, not to replace the old, but to make the old traditions even richer. New traditions can honor our special person, not by forgetting who they were, but by remembering their impact on our lives.

So, allow grief to “take” a holiday and make it something even better, more tender, special and full of renewed celebration. Old traditions and new memories intermingled can be refreshing and wonderful.

4 tips for assisting an elderly relative from a distance

Caring for an elderly relative can be demanding at the best of times. However, if you live far away, it can make things even more difficult. Whether your loved one resides in a different city or country, here are a few strategies for taking care of them from afar.

1. Develop a network of contacts

Build a network of people who can help your elderly relative when you’re not around. For example, you could ask a trustworthy friend or family member to regularly check in on them. Additionally, you can hire a

health-care professional to conduct visits. Make sure you give your loved one a list of people they can contact if they can’t reach you.

2. Make the most of your visits

During your visits, assist your loved one with as many of their immediate and future needs as possible. For example, you could help them stock up on groceries, prepare meals, sort medication and schedule appointments.

3. Check in regularly

Frequently checking in with your loved one allows

you to stay on top of their health and habits. On top of face-to-face visits, you can call, email or video chat to keep in touch.

4. Prepare financial resources

If you’ll need to travel or take time off work to accompany your loved one to a medical appointment, it’s a good idea to make room in your budget for this expense. Additionally, some nonprofit organizations offer friendly calls or visits to seniors. Find out if a service like this is available in your loved one’s region.

3 good reasons to play golf this summer

Do you feel like trying something new or rekindling an old hobby to keep you busy this summer? Here are three great reasons to choose golf.

1. Stay healthy

Although golf may not seem like a demanding sport, it has many physical and psychological benefits. For example, walking from hole to hole is good for your heart. You also exercise your brain because you must be focused when visualizing the ball’s trajectory. This can help slow neurological aging. Finally, golf is a great way to de-stress since it’s played outside. Spending time outdoors can also improve your sleep quality.

2. Socialize

Golf is a great way to spend time with family and friends. For example, there’s ample time between holes to chat and have fun. Additionally, this sport can be played at almost any age. The clubhouse is also a great place to meet people who have at least one thing in common with you.

3. Have fun

Although golf is a technical sport, it’s all about having fun. If you enjoy challenging yourself and being outdoors, this sport is for you. Plus, the feeling of satisfaction you get from making the perfect shot is unbeatable. Lastly, if you accept that mistakes are part of the game, you can enjoy hours of fun.

Finally, Hassle-Free Home Ownership

The Village Cooperative of Fargo is Coming Soon

The Village Cooperative that is coming soon to Fargo is designed to provide a maintenance-free home ownership option to active adults (62+)— working or retired—in an independent, pleasant and secure living environment. With over 60% of the homes already sold, construction is planned to start soon.

Owner-members can select from a variety of one bedroom, two bedroom and two bedroom with den homes with no steps within in a three-story building built over secure underground parking. Those who reserve now will also be able to choose their home’s interior finishes. This community includes

many amenities including a club room, reading areas, community area with kitchen, hobby shop, guest suite, garden plots, while-you’re-away services, underground heated parking with a car wash bay—all wrapped up in a fully secure building. The homes are equipped with all appliances including a washer and dryer, in-home storage, walk-in closets and individually controlled heating and cooling.

Because of the building design, style of management, ownership structure and prevailing attitude of the members, this senior housing option provides a lifestyle that lives very different from a single-family house, townhouse, condominium, senior apartment, or assisted living facility. The cooperative lifestyle gives each owner a standard of living, an involvement with others and a degree

of comfort and security not found in other types of housing—all for a fraction of the price of a patio- or ranch-style home. Probably the greatest

difference between life in cooperative housing and living in other housing options is the pride of ownership and community. Their attitudes reflect a

sense of belonging and the underlying awareness of pleasant and secure living, reminiscent of the neighborhood where they lived and raised

their families. For more information about cooperative living or the Village Cooperative of Fargo, please contact Steve at (701) 997-2900.

Trust A Novel

Hardcover | $25.20

May 3, 2022 | 416 Pages

An unparalleled novel about money, power, intimacy, and perception.

Even through the roar and effervescence of the 1920s, everyone in New York has heard of Benjamin

This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose but also my voice in a world that didn’t always see me.

As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. We are forced to reinvent them to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world. So I wrote this for anyone running through life untethered, desperate and clawing

and Helen Rask. He is a legendary Wall Street tycoon; she is the daughter of eccentric aristocrats. Together, they have risen to the very top of a world of seemingly endless wealth—all as a decade of excess and speculation draws to an end. But at what cost have they acquired their immense fortune? This is the mystery at the center of Bonds, a successful 1937 novel that all of New York seems to have read. Yet there are other versions of this tale of privilege and deceit.

Hernan Diaz’s TRUST elegantly puts these competing

their way through murky memories, trying to get to some form of self-love. For anyone who needs reminding that a life worth living can only be born from radical honesty and the courage to shed facades and be . . . you.

Finding Me is a deep reflection, a promise, and a love letter of sorts to self. My hope is that my story will inspire you to light up your own life with creative expression and rediscover who you were before the world put a label on you.

narratives into conversation with one another—and in tension with the perspective of one woman bent on disentangling fact from fiction. The result is a novel that spans over a century and becomes more exhilarating with each new revelation.

At once an immersive story and a brilliant literary puzzle, TRUST engages the reader in a quest for the truth while confronting the deceptions that often live at the heart of personal relationships, the reality-warping force of capital, and the ease with which power can manipulate facts.

3 tips for finding love after you retire

Have you recently retired? Are you looking for someone to share your life with? Fortunately, falling in love has no age limit. Here are three tips to help you find that special someone.

1. Adjust your expectations

As you get older, love can manifest in unanticipated ways. Indeed, what you want and value in a relationship is likely to change. Therefore, make sure you adjust your expectations. Your new relationship is likely to be different from prior ones.

2. Keep an open mind

Whether you live alone or in a retirement home, the key to

finding a romantic partner is to stay open to meeting new people. For instance, when running errands, be willing to strike up a conversation with a stranger.

3. Step outside your comfort zone

Don’t be afraid to use a dating site, consult a marriage agency or attend organized activities and outings for people in your age group. This will make it easier to find a potential partner who shares the same passions and interests as you.

To take the first steps toward finding love, look for seniors’ events in your area.
