Are you building a new wooden deck? Do you want to rejuvenate the one you already have with a few brush strokes? If you’re undecided between painting and staining, this information could help you make the right decision.
⊲ STAIN
Stain preserves the natural appearance of the wood, regardless of its level of opacity. Plus,
you can choose from a variety of different colors. The more transparent the stain, the more pronounced the knots and wood grain patterns. If you go for a milkier option, you can hide some imperfections. Stain doesn’t flake, but it can change shade over time.
⊲ PAINT
Paint is ideal if you like bold colors. You can easily choose a hue that works perfectly with
your decor. Latex paint comes in particularly rich, vibrant shades. Be aware that some paints require you to use a primer to seal the wood.
Ultimately, the choice between stain and paint comes down to a question of preference. Consider the results you hope to achieve, and then find out which techniques will help you get the best outcome from your selected product.
Deck trends IN 2023
Warmer days are around the corner. Are you dreaming of renovating or decorating your deck? Here are five trends that may inspire you.
1. Indoor furniture. Outdoor furniture is becoming increasingly similar to what you’d find in your home. The main difference is its ability to withstand the elements.
2. Fun textiles. Decorate with various fabrics and textiles, using cushions, rugs, sunshades, throws and hammocks to optimize your comfort.
3. Plants, plants, plants. Bring your deck to life with greenery. Choose hardy plants that will beautify your yard — and make you feel like you’re on a tropical holiday.
4. Eco-responsible materials. Recycled and environmentally sustainable fabrics, wood and other building materials are definitely in this year.
5. Modular furniture. Many garden furniture retailers sell sofas and tables that you can configure in multiple ways, so you can readily adapt your deck to your needs and desires.
Finally, neutral colors, like gray, black and brown, remain a winning choice for outdoor materials and furniture. Add personality to your deck with accessories like lanterns and LED lights.
Before building a deck, don’t forget to find out whether you need a permit from your municipality.

Do natural stones make your eyes light up and get you envisioning ways to include them in your landscape? Here are five sure-fire ideas for incorporating them into your space.
1. Create a trail. Flat stones, whether of varying sizes or straight cut, are perfect for creating paths that combine esthetics and function.
2. Build a low wall. Low walls break the monotony of your landscape while outlining specific zones like a garden or flower bed.
3. Install steps. Durable and elegant, stone steps give your entire landscape
a touch of charm while making certain areas more accessible.
4. Add a decorative feature. Large stones can add a rustic look to a rock garden or flower bed. Crushed stone can also serve as a decorative mulch.
5. Grace your terrace. Complement your patio furniture with the warm aspect of natural stones. This improvement will make the perfect sitting area to spend a summer evening.
Do you see a major project on your horizon? Trust the know-how of a specialized landscaping contractor to help you bring it to life.

5 CRITERIA TO MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE
Are you looking for the perfect patio set? To make the best choice for your needs, consider the following criteria when purchasing your furniture and accessories.
1. Use. Determine how you’ll use your patio set. For example, a comfortable armchair is a must if you want a spot to read and sunbathe, but you probably don’t need a large table. Ensure your setup has some side tables, chests or ottomans where you can put down a book or glass.
2. Comfort. Don’t hesitate to try out the chairs in the store. The presence or absence of armrests, the height of the chairs relative to the table, the number of possible adjustments and the depth of the seat are all characteristics that’ll influence your comfort level.
3. Available space. If your patio is small, choose chairs that can slide under the table or be folded or
stacked. Multi-functional furniture, such as a storage bench or table with an extension leaf, is also a good choice.
4. Quality. Choose high-quality pieces that can withstand the whims of Mother Nature. For instance, ensure the cushions are UV and mold resistant. Looking for a set with an umbrella? Make sure the base won’t get carried away by the wind.
5. Materials. Wrought iron, aluminum, steel, wood, composite, synthetic rattan –the list goes on. Find out the advantages and disadvantages of each to make an informed decision. Weight, durability, style, maintenance, cost and weather resistance are some of the factors to consider.
Happy shopping!
Recipe
BARBECUE GRILLE D SWEET CORN
Do you usually boil your corn on the cob and slather it with butter and salt? Dare to think outside the box at your next barbecue with this recipe.
Ingredients
• 6 ears of fresh sweet corn with husks
• 1/2 cup sour cream
• 1/2 cup mayonnaise
• 1 clove of garlic, minced
• Salt and pepper, to taste
• 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese, for garnish
• 1 teaspoon paprika, for garnish
• 1 bunch of fresh coriander, chopped, for garnish
Directions
Preheat the barbecue on high.
Soak the cobs for about 10 minutes in a bowl of cold water. Keep the husks on. Drain.
Grill the cobs for 12 minutes or until the husks are charred. Peel the cobs and continue cooking until they’re toasted in some places. Turn the cobs often to prevent them from burning. Remove from the grill and allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.
In a bowl, combine sour cream, mayonnaise and garlic. Add salt and pepper. Brush the ears with this mixture. Sprinkle with feta cheese, paprika and cilantro.
