Looking back, it was interesting that throughout recent election years, in debate after debate, the most impactful asset we have—our cities—has not been a topic on any candidate’s agenda. On the other hand, at the CEO’s for Cities conference held in Boston, Ed Glaeser, professor of economics at Harvard, gave an amazing talk about the impact of cities on the development of human capital, our most optimistic driver of innovation, and ultimately our economic destiny. There seems to be no learning substitute for bumping into one another and sharing what we know. Density does matter, and clearly the greater the density, the more opportunities for innovation. As a landscape architect and urban designer, this is where I live. I see the role of cities as the ultimate convener, the reason why and how people from all walks of life come together and collectively share their experiences, and achieve great things. Still I wonder where is nature in this equation? It seems so short sighted to skip the ‘Motherof-all-mentors’. I would argue that the density or connectivity to nature, is just as much a catalyst of innovation as human density (and then some!). Innovation is not just a human-to-human benefit. There is as much, if not more, to learn from interaction with the natural systems in our cities and nature’s 3.8 billion years of managing complexity.

What came out of the session was the profound realization that we can be doing so much more to leverage synergies, optimize the complex systems instead of maximizing them, and better integrate our work into the natural genius of the place. All it took was just a slight shift in perspective to open a world of new opportunities for this project and our client. Our work with Bimimicry 3.8 has taught us that we have it all right here at our fingertips. We have these amazing places, our cities. We have access to incredible information about them. And we have 3.8 billion years of nature’s wisdom in solving the very same challenges that we face. So we’ve set our sights to achieve a new level of urbanism that recognizes both the benefits of human interaction, as well as the incredible benefits of nature’s genius. The solutions to building great cities are right here, all around us.

Today, we are embracing the notion of a “creative lab” – a space that can serve as a lively forum for discussion and knowledgesharing as well as an intensive, researchbased lab. Creative labs are, by their very nature, innovative and adaptable. They assemble groups of like-minded scientists, academics, healthcare providers, and anyone else who has a stake in a positive research and exploratory outcome. They prize individual creative freedom without sacrificing the best traits of collaboration. Creative labs aren’t merely the product of space planning and design. They are, rather, the result of a broader cultural shift. Employers are recognizing that focused, individual pursuits must still happen within increasingly collaborative environments. As we anticipate a more diverse labor force with multiple workstyles, the creative lab model can help us strike a balance between cooperation and concentration.
As demographics of office workers skew younger and the baby boom generation is exiting the workplace, new models for cooperation have emerged. Private offices have given way to “benching” in partitionfree environments. Cubicle walls have been lowered to enable open communication. And density per square foot has increased.

Forum Studio is reinventing itself — and rethinking its workplace in the process. The firm’s 20,000 square foot floor plate in the historic Jewelers Building in downtown Chicago is a departure from typical, monolithic office space, offering a patchwork of “vignettes” designed to nurture individuality, enable innovation, and retain the best talent. A series of informal collision zones facilitate serendipitous encounters among colleagues not only in Chicago but, through a constantlyactivated digital “windows,” to the firm’s St. Louis office. The live windows provide low-pressure places for team collaboration and impromptu meetings. A central gathering place, inspired by a kitchen, lends to a sense of comfort and community. Bringing together disparate workplaces and vignettes is an installation that, winding throughout the space, supplies thematic unity. A leaflike structure, designed and fabricated by Forum Studio out of more than 1,500 individual pieces, introduces the reception area, hovers over common spaces, and weaves through the building core. As visitors pass underneath the leaves, the installation expands and dips in response to specific pressure points. At the extremities of the installation, leaves gradually dissipate. The design and custom fabrication of the piece sets the tone for Forum Studio’s culture of hands-on innovation and progressive design aesthetic.

Express Scripts Technology & Innovation Center

The project was delivered with an integrated design and construction approach under a single design-build contract. The entire design and construction process was expedited, with complete design, construction, and occupancy of the space in eight short months.
LOCATION ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI SIZE 230,000 SF 2 STORIES SERVICES PROVIDED PLANNING ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN INTERIOR DESIGN
The Pharmacy Technology and Innovation Center houses office space and a complex pharmaceutical production plant for Express Scripts. The center also serves as a tour center for the prescription drug manufacturer, exhibiting their safe and efficient practices to current and potential clients. The high-volume production space is capable of filling 110,000 individual prescriptions per day, at a rate of 500,000 pills per hour. Forum Studio designers were faced with a unique challenge with this facility. A custom two-story piece of manufacturing equipment was in production, but was designed specifically for a site in a different state. Designers had to quickly execute a footprint for the St. Louis facility that would accommodate this equipment while allowing flexibility for adjoining office space. The Pharmacy Technology and Innovation Center is comprised of 190,000 SF of production space and 40,000 SF of office space, which includes an executive conference area, a customer service center, and staff support space. The project achieved LEED Silver certification.

Roundarch Isobar TENANT IMPROVEMENT
The space was designed to accommodate private offices at the interior core, while utilizing all glass façades to maintain the outstanding views of the Chicago skyline.

Teaming up with Clayco, Forum Studio recently finished tenant improvements of a 16,392-square-foot, previously unoccupied office space on the 40th floor of 300 E. Randolph in Chicago. The buildout provided the headquarters for Roundarch, Inc., a web design company specializing in digital experiences for some of the world’s largest companies. To provide a team environment, over 60 percent of the work areas are open work stations located in neighborhoods dedicated to specific clients and projects. This open office environment allows the team sizes to “ebb and flow” as projects dictate. The space also includes multiple state-of-the-art audio-visual components and furniture and writable surface walls to promote collaboration within the team. In addition to the technological features of the office space, the high-floor location offers outstanding views of Chicago’s Millennium Park, Navy Pier, and the Chicago skyline.

The value-driven facility consolidates existing administrative office functions currently spread across BJC’s Kingshighway Campus. The architecture complements the vision and mission of the Cortex Research Park Master Plan with active street level uses and expressive and contextual building architecture. The five-story, steel-framed building features load-bearing, architectural concrete walls through the fourth floor, with the fifth floor and the entire west elevation of the building featuring curtainwall. Curtainwall has been used strategically to highlight skyline views. The concrete walls create visual interest through horizontal and vertical shifts of colored bands creating an illusion of woven materials.

This 7,000 square feet floor-to-ceiling renovation, features Haworth’s Integrated Palette, Master Series, Suite casegoods and the Haworth Collection. While the space is designed to portray what we all know and love about Haworth, it’s unique from other Haworth showrooms in how it also portrays true Texas style with large glassy private offices and plenty of wood finishes throughout, along with the award-winning Bluescape technology display wall.
