It’s traditionally a quiet month in London, with the crowds heading for the beaches. And with more space to breathe, I can’t help appreciating our Capital all the more. Our cover girl, Game of Thrones star Gemma Whelan is also feeling warm and fuzzy about the city, as she reveals how she makes the most of summer days off. She’d certainly be wise to enjoy some me-time, as come September she’ll be hearing the pitter patter of tiny feet. We suggest she checks out our advice on chic interiors for littlies before making any decisions about the nursery. Finally, if you’re one of those Londoners heading for a beach and you’re yet to book your break, take inspiration from our reviewer’s adventures in Andalucia. And if that inspires you to seek a more permanent holiday base, you might enjoy a snoop around one of Ibiza’s coolest holiday homes. Until next time, adios!

The hot list What to see and where to go this month
Painting of a Chinese Puzzle Ball, Piers Secunda (2010)
EXHIBITION
IN R ES I D EN C E UNTIL 25 AUG GRIFFIN GALLERY, W11
Celebrating the world of paint – and all the weird and wonderful things you can do with it – this enchanting group exhibition showcases the work of 18 emerging international artists who’ve each benefited from a residency at this Notting Hill gallery. With access to studio space, materials from leading paint brands, and even advice and expertise from on-site chemists, this talented bunch really have come up with the goods: Mike Ballard explodes paint cans onto canvasses, Bea Haines uses ashes to make pigment, while Piers Secunda creates super-intricate sculptures from nothing but industrial floor paint. Prepare to be wowed.

A night of peace and music is promised at this unique event held at one of the Capital’s most intriguing venues. Musical neighbours – albeit centuries apart – the lives and works of both Handel and Hendrix are celebrated in the flanking Georgian Mayfair townhouses they once inhabited. Marking the date of Hendrix’s notorious headline performance in 1969, this Woodstock party – chez Jimi – looks set to sparkle with live performances, DJs spinning vintage vinyl, ’60s costumes and a pop-up cocktail bar.

LONDI NI UM UNTIL 29 OCT VARIOUS VENUES
Looking for imaginative ways to entertain the kids this summer holiday? You won’t need to go far to dig out a host of activities exploring the Capital’s hidden Roman heritage – providing a history lesson they’ll love. This comprehensive season of walks, talks, exhibitions and special events is, in fact, for everyone, and promises a truly fascinating delve into the secrets of yesteryear that lie beneath the city. Including an art and archeology fun day, in which future archeologists are encouraged to discover genuine Roman artifacts, write a Roman mystery with author Caroline Lawrence, learn to fight like gladiators, and hone their Roman crafting skills with mosaic, pottery and drawing workshops.
Thanks to the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery, The Royal Parks Foundation have launched Mission: Invertebrate to get a better understanding of the invertebrates that make their home in the grasslands of the Capital’s Royal Parks. Invertebrates include beasties such as bees, butterflies, spiders and worms, all of which we’d struggle to survive without. They provide us with vital services, from pollinating plants to providing food for other animals – and so the work the charity is doing really is crucial. To discover more about these amazing creatures, join The Royal Parks for a free family day out this summer. The Mission: Invertebrate team are hitting the road with their Giant Snail Tour, which promises storytelling, bug trails, creative crafting and invertebrate missions galore. Look out for the Giant Snail Caravan packed with things for all the family to do. Events are taking place in a variety of locations between now and October. For more information, visit royalparks.org.uk/ missioninvertebrate. The Royal Parks is a charity created to fundraise for and manage 5,000 acres of Royal parkland across London. Every year 77 million visitors enjoy London’s eight amazing Royal Parks and the unparalleled opportunities they offer for exploration and healthy living in the heart of our Capital. INTERVIEW
There are some jobs so huge that the appeal of the character or the requirements of the audition barely register. Such was the case when Gemma Whelan was asked to a slightly unorthodox audition (you probably saw her talking about it on The Graham Norton Show, and if not, there’s always Google): “you just champ at the bit for a role on something like Game of Thrones, really, and hope that you are right for it,” she explains. Fortuitously, Yara Greyjoy’s character had much to recommend it. “I recognised her strengths, and certain qualities she has. You know, integrity and family values, and a real view of what she wants and how to get it. And of course, the writing was so fantastic. The whole job appealed to me hugely, but I never dreamed that I would get it.” Five years on, with season 7 currently screening in the UK, she is still pinching herself. Can she tell us anything about what’s in store? Absolutely, categorically not, aside from the fact that it will be “bigger and better than ever before,” she laughs. “I’m not allowed to say a thing about it, and I don’t think that anybody would want me to!” In fact, she knows very little, aside from her own storylines – there’s a code of secrecy amongst cast and crew, who, other than the one episode shown at the premier in L.A, will be watching all of it on television for the first time, along with fans, this summer. Gemma, “a massive attention-seeker” by her own admission, once dallied with the idea of nursing, but soon realised that a fear of blood (“not the fake stuff, which is enormous fun, obviously”) would put paid to ambitions of that nature. She recalls a childhood spent “prancing about” at ballet and tap lessons, and corralling cousins into Christmas Day dramatic renditions of Just William, in which she starred as Violet Elizabeth Bott – “terrible, terrible affairs
that nobody else wanted to be in.” It was obvious that a creative future beckoned, and fortunately Gemma’s parents spotted bossiness and talent in equal measure: “I was very lucky to have really supportive parents who were not pushy. They were very sensible about money and getting qualifications and stuff as well, but no wings were clipped and they were very encouraging. So it always felt as if I had permission to, and I was able to do it.” Thanks to those childhood ballet lessons, Gemma first made a name for herself as a dancer. In the late Noughties she appeared as a 1920s-style showgirl with the Beaux Belles dance troupe. But while dancing may have opened doors for her, she no longer performs professionally. “I dance often, with my husband, at the flat, but no, I don’t perform anymore. I mean I’m not averse to it if a role comes up that requires dancing, I mean, I’ve still got it,” she laughs. In fact, dancing is just one of the skills on Gemma’s CV. In 2010 she received a Funny Woman Award for her comedy alias Chastity Butterworth. The “potty-mouthed Mary Poppins” went on to appear at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2013, in Chastity Butterworth and the Spanish Hamster, and hosted her own comedy chat show on Radio Four earlier this year, and Gemma assures me that radio fans have not heard the last of Chastity. But comedy was a far cry from one of Gemma’s latest performances, in Moorside, in which she played Karen Matthews (yes, that really was Gemma). The BBC’s dramatisation of the kidnapping of Shannon Matthews met with resounding critical acclaim, and fans were left speechless by Gemma’s unnervingly accurate portrayal of the kidnap victim’s mother. It is little wonder she considers it to be one of her biggest achievements to date. “I may be deluded but it seemed to go down quite well and I am very proud of having been part of that storytelling,” she explains. So what next? As far as aspirations go, Gemma is hoping to perfect a somewhat different skill this autumn. “I am currently pregnant – and I suppose I aspire to being a very good mummy,” she reveals, shyly, adding: “that sort of cancels out any kind of ideas about, ‘one day I would like to be in a Hollywood movie’. I think I would like to be a good mummy and see what follows.” That something will follow, career-wise, is not in doubt. “There are jobs on the horizon beyond September, but that do give me a good bit of time to get my bearings… I know myself – I’m a workaholic. We are going to have to compromise! The nice thing is that the industry is much more open to that now.” Right now though, with the most serendipitous of timing, she’s got some time off to enjoy being at home in London before the baby arrives, and she intends to make the most of it. Swimming in the ladies’ pond on Hampstead Heath (“quite magical”), wandering through the manicured splendour of Regent’s Park, de-stressing with a yoga class at TriYoga in Camden, enjoying a veggie feast with friends at Mildred’s in Soho… she could wax lyrical all day. “There are not many places that I am not happy in London, actually. We are very lucky,” she grins. But more than that, Gemma loves her neighbours. “There is so much love in London, I find, anyway. I feel like we are very united, and I like the camaraderie, that I certainly feel. I love the openness, and the joy. I enjoy my fellow Londoners very much and all of the variety and diversity that there is here,” she gushes, adding, “I may be in a sort of yogic, pregnancy bubble of joy…” If that’s her excuse, I’m not sure what mine is. Food&drink Lee Andrews at Gabeto’s...
C HOR IZO SCOTC H E GG W I TH S M ASHED AVO C A DO Fans of Chiltern Firehouse will be excited to hear that chef Lee Andrews is now cooking up a storm at NW1’s newest brasserie, Gabeto (Spanish for ‘our house’). Housed in Camden Market’s historic stable block, the exciting new venue features casual and formal eating areas, a cocktail bar, and a large heated terrace that will host a series of street food pop ups. The main brasserie menu promises to mix carefully sourced British ingredients with a hint of Latin flavour. We’ve fallen for the signature scotch egg. Nobody makes it better than Lee, but with his secret recipe we’re willing to give it a go. Perfect picnic fodder… Camden Market, via Stables Gate, Chalk Farm Road, NW1 (020 7424 0692; gabeto.co.uk) 1 Place the egg, still in its shell, in a pan of cold salted water. 2 Bring to the boil over a high heat, then reduce to a simmer for exactly nine minutes. 3 Drain and cool the egg under cold running water, then peel. 4 Mix the sausage and chorizo meat with the parsley and season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 5 Roll sausage and chorizo meat into a ball and press between cling film until flat. 6 Roll the egg in the seasoned flour until coated. 7 Place the egg on top of the sausage meat, then wrap, ensuring the coating completely covers the egg.
INGREDIENTS For the egg 1 large free-range egg 50g quality sausage meat 50g chorizo, chopped 2g chopped fresh parsley salt and freshly ground black pepper 30g plain flour, seasoned with salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 free-range egg, beaten 30g panko breadcrumbs vegetable oil, for deep frying For the guacamole half a mashed avocado sprinkle of chilli flakes squeeze of lime
8 Dip the sausage meat-coated egg in the beaten egg, rolling to coat completely, then dip and roll into the panko breadcrumbs until covered. 9 Heat the oil in a deep heavy-bottomed pan until a breadcrumb sizzles and turns brown when dropped into it. 10 Carefully place the scotch egg into the hot oil and deep-fry for 8-10 minutes, until golden and crisp and the sausage meat is completely cooked. 11 Carefully remove from the oil with a slotted spoon and drain on kitchen paper. 12 Mash the avocado with a fork and sprinkle with chilli flakes and a squeeze of lime before placing scotch egg on top to serve.
E N J OY THE RIDE Not familiar with Carousel? Where have you been? Opened in 2014, the threestorey building on Marylebone’s Blandford Street features a first floor gallery and event space, along with a ground floor restaurant and courtyard terrace. Lunch service is led by head chef, co-founder and Young British Foodie finalist Ollie Templeton and his team, who offer a weeklychanging, seasonally-inspired menu. And come the evening, a programme of ongoing collaborations showcase culinary talent from around the world. We’re excited about this month’s residency from north London girl Olia Hercules. Celebrating the release of her second book, Kaukasis The Cookbook, her menu will offer a taste of Azerbaijan, Georgia and beyond, with inventive twists on authentic dishes such as Khachapuri, a Georgian cheese-filled bread, and Dyushbara, a dish of traditional Azerbaijani dumplings. 71 Blandford Street, W1U (020 7487 5564; carousel-london.com)

JOZEF YOUSSEF Chef at Kitchen Theory
When I was a child I wanted to be… Richard Branson. I was about five when he was hot air ballooning around the world and we were tracking his progress on a map at school. I was totally hooked! The first thing I cooked was… rice. I’m mad about the stuff in all of its glorious forms and learnt how to cook it properly from a young age.
Burn fuel with flavour Sourcing your wood is as important as sourcing your meat. Different woods offer different flavours, but also different levels of heat and burn time. We use kiln-dried English oak but beech, birch, chestnut and apple offer equally great results.
My kitchen heroes are… Ferran Adrià, for blowing open the doors to creativity and kickstarting this golden age of gastronomic experimentalism we are currently enjoying; and the legendary Fernand Point, whose book, Ma Gastronomie is one of my favourites and a must read for any chef.
Use a water pan Smoking is a long, dry process. Adding a water/drip pan allows you to create a moist environment, resulting in more succulent dishes.
For the ultimate dinner party… I cheat by getting guests to roll their own sushi, adding some fried gyoza to the mix and a quick seaweed salad. This generally goes down a treat – it’s lots of fun and even the kids can get involved.
Cook with indirect heat Be patient and let gentle heat cook the meat. Light your fire in one side of the barbecue and place your meat on the opposite end. Keep the lid down with a low, gentle fire. The smoke will do the work but it needs time.
Manage airflow When smoking you want to keep a steady flow of smoke and oxygen through the barbecue. It’s important to have a good air intake and a good exhaust (a chimney or smokestack) to draw the smoke out the other end.
C H E F ’ S TA B L E Ever wondered why you spent so much money creating a dream kitchen that you never use? Blessed as we are with so many wonderful restaurants, Londoners are increasingly choosing to eat out rather than entertain at home. But it’s a trend that restaurateur Tetsuro Hama hopes to reverse, with his new private dining platform Eho Chef. Whether you choose to
host an informal barbecue or a five-course haute cuisine dinner, imagine a chef arriving ahead of your guests to prepare, serve and then clean up afterwards, leaving your kitchen just as they found it. With a huge variety of chefs available, representing 23 nationalities and numerous cuisines, and including the likes of Anton Edelmann, of Savoy Hotel fame, there’s something to
suit every taste and budget. Budding home chefs can even book their own cookery masterclass. Time to polish up that neglected silverware. Menus start at £30 per head for three courses, with secure payment through Stripe. For more information and to book your chef, see ehochef.com
My last meal on earth would be… with my family, at Disfrutar in Barcelona. We’ve eaten there before, and to date it is one of my (and my five-year-old son’s) most memorable meals ever! When I feel down I cook… nothing. Unfortunately I’m one of those people who completely loses their appetite when not feeling all that great. My favourite London restaurant is… Ten Ten Tei in Soho, for its honest, well-priced Japanese food. As an experience it reminds me of the quick easy meals you eat while out and about in Tokyo. My ultimate London day consists of… a picnic lunch of olives, bread and ibérico ham at Somerset House while my son plays in the fountains, followed by a quick siesta. Later on, drinks at The Gibson, then a dinner with friends at Sushi Samba (I love the view). Kitchen Theory, Unit 9a Alston Works, Falkland Road, EN5 (gastrophysics.co.uk)

Travel Name of the game FLY SOUTH FOR THE WINTER While you might still be preoccupied with thoughts of the beach, now’s the time to start planning those winter trips, not least because time is of the essence if you want to take advantage of this rather special offering from White Desert. Their luxury Whichaway Camp in Antarctica underwent a stunning refurbishment last year, and is now in such high demand that there are only a few spots left on trips this year. To add to the appeal, this coming season sees the introduction of a completely carbon neutral private jet service from Cape Town, South Africa to Antarctica. Run in line with strict ecological guidelines, the first departure is scheduled for November.
A Gulfstream jet will fly guests 4,000 km over the incredible icepack of the Southern Ocean before passing into 24 hours of continuous sunshine. On-board catering will come in the form of a selection of delicacies including sushi and Wagyu beef tartare, while cocktails will be garnished with thousand-year-old glacial ice from Antarctica. With one of the most iconic mountains on Earth as the backdrop – named Wolf’s Fang – guests will land on a specially prepared blue ice runway. The fitting start to a holiday of a lifetime. Prices from $32,000 per person for the 4-day Ice and Mountains adventure. For details and to book, see white-desert.com
Adventurous travellers seeking the very best game viewing need look no further than a brand new camp on the Selous Game Reserve in Southern Tanzania. This month sees the opening of Asilia Africa’s Roho ya Selous. The Swahili word ‘roho’ translates as ‘heart’, and the camp certainly lives up to its name, with an unparalled location right in the heart of the reserve. Eight stretch canvas bedroom tents provide luxurious accommodation. There is also an inside bar and seating area under stretch canvas, and an outside dining area in the shade of the trees with a fire-pit. Experiences on offer include boat safaris and catchand-release fishing trips, as well as traditional game drives and guided walking safaris, with night drives (post-sundowner/pre-dinner) providing an opportunity for leopard spotting, too. Roho Ya Selous is bookable through Timbuktu, with prices from £695 per person, per night. Stays can be built into any of Timbuktu’s customisable itineraries. 300 jets. Routes to Ibiza and Cannes have already launched, with Zurich, Luxembourg, Munich and Milan coming next month. With
space for just eight passengers on each flight, a very personal service is assured. Add to that a private terminal with valet parking, and members can be certain that there will be no mixing with the hoi polloi. TRAVEL REVIEW
Flights from London to Jerez, Seville or Gibraltar. Rates at Royal Hideaway Sancti Petri start from €144 per room, based on two people sharing on a B&B basis (barcelo.com)
Determined to avoid an early morning schlep to Stansted, our game of hide-and-seek – to discover the aptly named Royal Hideaway Sancti Petri – begins with a far more civilised afternoon flight from Gatwick to Gibraltar. We’ve come the scenic route but a stop-off in Little Britain is a must if you’re yet to experience the terrifying near wing-dip into water as you circumvent the notorious Rock. Roller coasters have nothing on this and we know now we’re in for an adventure. It’s late and the border’s closed to traffic. We have to walk into Spain. Still laughing at the familiar beeps of the British traffic lights (but look, there’s Africa!), we don’t immediately spot the open door to the right of the abandoned ePassport gates. So that’s how we go through with a small child... Brits abroad, eh? It turns out we’re the only ones on the other side and the blunt contrast between the two cultures – through one silly but seemingly magical room – really is remarkable. Tarifa is our first stop and we bed down close to Valdevaqueros beach – our first of three, because there are serious sandcastles to be built. It’s known as one of Spain’s last wild beaches with its 5 km stretch of white sand, turquoise choppy sea and huge dunes. Predictably, the money men are closing in and we’re glad we’re experiencing it now before it turns full Torremolinos. Next is a visit to the old town of Cádiz, via an air-
conditioned drive through the baked-but-beautiful countryside along the Costa de la Luz. Here, we fill up on authentic tapas and city sights. The golden tiles of the cathedral dome twinkle majestically in this light. And we’re able to catch the sun going down over the impossibly blue waters of the marina before we head for more beach action the following day – only this time it’s packed – and we concede we’ve packed an awful lot in. Exhausted, we’re ready to find our sanctuary. You can’t miss Sancti Petri’s terracotta glow in the bright sun as you approach the sprawling hillside hotel. A charmingly higgledy-piggledy village in its own right, we check in on floor 4 but must descend a few storeys to find our elegant suite, where it becomes clear we’ve R E Vlucked IEW out and are, in fact, perfectly positioned overlooking both the inviting pools and the sparkling sea below. More than ready to dive in, the dilemma hits hard: pool or beach? It’s a tough one. Inevitably the kids’ pool, with its enticing water slide, wins out, but of course, we’ve plenty of time to experience every corner of sun-drenched luxury – and that’s the beauty of simply being here: it’s impossible not to relax with it all so tangibly close at hand. And when we’re not in sea, sand, or sun lounger, we’re finding even deeper levels of relaxation (if that were possible) at the Royal Hideaway’s sumptuous U-spa: a blissful signature massage for me, a restorative hydrotherapy circuit for him. But swimming and lounging and being pampered comatose is hungry work and by dinnertime our appetites are muy grande. So too are our eager eyes as we’re led to our table past the most extravagant buffet spread imaginable. We’re feeling suitably smug having plumped for half board at the Almadraba restaurant. Serving up an ever-changing variety of Mediterranean and international cuisine courtesy of chef Alejandro García, the choice is deliciously endless, even for the veggie of the party – a rare feat in this part of the world. Sadly our eyes prove bigger than stomachs and we finally admit defeat in the knowledge we’ll be back for breakfast. And after one last go on the enchanting chocolate fountain – there’s always room for that – we head back to the beach before bed and to our amazement, witness a trail of horses silhouetted by the glorious golden semi-circle behind them. We stop to drink it all in and smile. Yes, Andalucian sunsets are alright. FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

But with some design-led finds of their very own, and advice on how to stay stylish – despite the flying fromage frais – achieving a beautiful home really can be child’s play WO R DS A L I H OWA R D

The collection will feature furniture pieces, toys and accessories, all carefully selected with the needs of both parent and child in mind. Here’s hoping they’ll leave with a love of minimalism. 86 Marylebone High Street, W1U (020 7935 2077; skandium.com) L IT T LE P RINTS CH A R M I N G Ottoline, an online interiors boutique for pattern and print, takes inspiration from large geometric urban shapes and architecture as well as the works of world-renowned artists. Beautifully bright and colourful, their funky furnishings are perfect for cool kids who don’t subscribe to pink and blue gender norms. And with names like Space Out, Sky Candy and Homework, they’re stylish and fun all the way. (ottoline.nl) B O UTIQUE BABY Another online shop whose carefully curated collection remains refreshingly gender neutral is The Modern Nursery. Sommer Pyne, owner of House Curious and mum to Lyla and Indy, gives her top tips on how to keep a stylish home with small children 1. SMART STORAGE
4. FIND THE RIGHT
Whether you’re doing a renovation or simply redecorating, it’s worth investing in built-in storage. A good carpenter should be able to knock something bespoke up for half the price of a branded cupboard or wardrobe.
FLOORING
If you’re redecorating, consider flooring carefully. Carpet may not be the smartest idea. In our house we have concrete and wooden floors so no matter how many accidents we have, they’re easy to clean.
2. A CASE FOR BASKETS
Baskets not only look great but can also hide a mountain of things. Buy a decorative basket, put a sheet inside and fill it with all your child’s toys. Place a lovely woollen blanket or throw on top. This makes for a great decorative piece. 3. DON’T COMPROMISE ON STYLE
My house probably doesn’t seem that kidfriendly – I still have velvet and fabric sofas – but it is in so many ways. Make sure you have a large throw or sheet to hand for messy moments (it can be easily stored under the sofa).
5. KEEP IT CLUTTER-FREE
Simplify your space with just the essentials and decorative pieces you absolutely love. In our family room there’s no coffee table in the middle. This way my daughter can run around freely without bumping her head on sharp edges. The other alternative is to have a soft ottoman. 6. ZONE IT
We have areas that are no-go zones for kids. We have a great family room and Lyla’s bedroom for her many toys, but there are certain rooms that are out of bounds. Sommer is an ambassador for Tommee Tippee (tommeetippee. co.uk; housecurious.co.uk)

Entertaining is evidently the main concern – that much is in the very design. From the outdoor bar and barbecue area with its built-in pizza oven, to the large inviting dining spaces (one slightly more formal than its country kitchen style counterpart) Ibiza’a playful spirit is perfectly captured in the villa’s laid-back boho feel. It’s an aesthetic that’s endlessly fascinating with a curated collection of furniture pieces that each have a story to tell – testament to Godrich’s tailored approach. “A lot of the furniture we bought was reclaimed and then re-upholstered or repaired,” Tim explains when asked how he worked with Godrich to personalise the property. “We love it! Bespoke upholstered armchairs; a huge daybed and cushions by Violet & George; the highly sought after Tropicalia chairs by Patricia Urquiola for Moroso; a pair of multi-coloured Pumpkin chairs; patterned armchairs by Andrew Martin… And the stunning gold and orange pendant lights by Zenza complete this modern picture of Balearic bliss.” (cantikiibiza.com; godrichinteriors.com)

Clockwise from top: exteriors are bright, white and contemporary; midcentury pieces add vintage appeal; the view from the pool
Godrich Interiors-owned images
When he’s not at his St. John’s Wood home, Tim spends his leisure time at his beautifully eclectic Ibizan villa, Can Tiki, which he describes as “a lovely private hideaway surrounded by woodland and mature garden.” It really is the perfect bolthole, positioned in the middle of the island, close to the quaint, diminutive village of Santa Gertrudis. Designed by Holland Park’s Godrich Interiors – whose trademark fearlessness makes for super-interesting abodes that don’t look interior designed at all – the property successfully mixes old world Balearic charm with bucket-loads of contemporary sass. And that’s not the only contradiction here: the villa’s retro rustic appeal is countered with full-on luxury: a large outdoor pool boasts space for over 16 sunbeds while a separate guest house features a super-king master suite complete with a raindrop shower, huge stone bath, and a walk-in dressing room. There’s a TV room with a 64” plasma screen, too, as well as an enviable choice of terraces upon which to grab a glass of sangria and unwind. The design brief? “Retro cool meets ethnic chic,” Tim reveals, “chock-full of bright colours and intriguing art and deco, all the while retaining original elements of rustic, Ibicenco charm. We wanted to add an injection of quirky personality and style, sitting alongside some statement pieces such as the bar, which was created entirely from reclaimed church fittings.” Delightfully sacrilegious, the wayward Catholic iconography continues with a collection of vintage Playboy covers in the shape of a cross, “courtesy of London art warehouse Signed and Original,” Tim enthuses. “Naughty, but very, very nice!” As much a party pad as it is utterly homely (another dichotomy) Can Tiki and its glorious surroundings offer a lifestyle that’s both irresistible and immediate. “We loved the fact that you can enjoy the peace and tranquility of the island but also enjoy the party scene if you want to,” says Tim. “This was particularly appealing to our three grown-up children. We knew we could guarantee one week with each of them if we bought on the island.”

HIGHGATE
Georgian architecture, leafy streets and abundant green space lend Highgate a quaint, rural charm, while a zone three tube station and the breathtaking skyline views offered from its lofty vantage point serve as a reminder of its unrivalled location. Blue plaques aplenty, celebrating the likes of Sir John Betjeman, Mary Kingsley and J.B. Priestley, attest to the area’s unwavering popularity. Today’s loyal locals love the bustling high street and the strong community spirit, while visitors come from far and wide to visit Hampstead Heath’s wild acres and the atmospheric Victorian cemetery, in which the Communist philosopher Karl Marx is buried P H OTO GRAP HY KATHY A N N E LI M
Coleridge’s Xanadu The poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge moved here in 1816, hoping to cure his opium habit with the help of a Dr James Gilman, who lived on Pond Square. In 1823, with his addiction under control, he moved to
a house on The Grove, where he wrote many of his later poems. He once compared the view from his bedroom window, taking in the upper woods of Hampstead Heath and Kenwood House, to his own sacred kingdom of Kubla Khan.

LOCAL HEROES HIGHGATE WCD INTERIORS N6 The home of Walter Castellazzo Design, this Highgate boutique offers a diverse mix of homewares, from vintage furniture pieces to stylish ceramics, home fragrance to luxury textiles. Having started life in Camden Market, the quirky shop has been a Highgate staple since 1996 and is a go-to for local residents looking for unique design pieces. Mark Sumray from Benham & Reeves says: “Walter has an eclectic assortment of handmade furniture and other gifts, which are ideal if you are looking for something a little different. He has been a valuable source for dinner party and occasion gifts for me.” 84 Highgate High Street, N6 (020 8340 3001; wcdinteriors.com)
Little black book Musician Mark Nevin shares his favourite local haunts. “I’ve been in Highgate for 17 years and it really is home now. I’ve made so many friends here, mostly from being a parent of children at St. Michael’s School, so a walk through the village is always a social affair. I can often be found starting the day with my laptop at Côte, where I have the vegetarian breakfast. I try to go via Waterlow Park wherever I’m heading – I love how green Highgate is. On Sundays the family enjoys the excellent roasts at The Gatehouse and I also like The Duke’s Head with its pop-up kitchens and excellent selection of craft beers – without a crusty old pub feeling about it. That said, The Boogaloo remains my local, not only because it has the best Guinness in London, but, if you’re lucky, you can stumble across some world class live music in there.” marknevin.com
THE FLASK N6 There are many reasons to love The Flask: whether it’s the architecture – this imposing period gastropub is Grade II listed; its fascinating history – it’s said that highwayman Dick Turpin would hide from the law in the stables here; its grisly past – look out for the ghost of a Spanish barmaid who hanged herself in the cellar; or today’s delectable menu with its thoroughly modern take on traditional pub grub. For Shaun Cunningham from Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward, it’s all of the above and then some: “Outstanding food, beer and ales with a delightful beer garden. It’s a must visit when coming to Highgate.” 77 Highgate West Hill, N6 (020 8348 7346 ; theflaskhighgate.com)

Schools A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD What do politician David Miliband, Channel 4 newsreader Jon Snow and comedian Sarah Millican have in common? They all had A-level results that fell short of the mark. But while failing to get top grades clearly hasn’t held these public figures back, it can still be a blow for someone who has spent months studying. Fortunately, there’s support out there to help your child decide his or her next move. And you don’t need to wait until 17 August to access it. The UCAS Customer Experience Centre, which supports people in applying for universities, was receiving calls in June from parents preparing for plan B. “Results day can be so stressful and full of mixed emotions,” says customer experience partner Jo Wallace. “So it’s good for the parent to be informed, and have options available to support their children at what can be a difficult time.” One of those options is using ‘Clearing’ to find a place at university or college. “Clearing is really positive as it allows students to showcase their abilities direct to the universities,” says Jo. “We have top universities offering places through the system. And last year, one in eight people that got accepted to university got their place that way.”
If your child needs broader advice, or isn’t sure university is still the right thing for them, the Department for Education’s Exam Results Helpline can help. Open for two weeks from 17 August, its advisors are trained to give specific careers advice to applicants. That means they can discuss options such as re-sitting exams, taking a gap year or doing something different altogether, like a traineeship or internship. So whatever path your child decides to take, not getting the right grades needn’t be the end of the world. But if he or she is still set on university, Jo says it pays to think carefully about which course to do and where. “Three years is a long time to study something,” she says. “So doing a complete U-turn just to get a place might not be sensible.” UCAS Customer Experience Centre: 0371 468 0 468; Exam Results Helpline: 0808 100 8000

What attracted you to the school? A combination of calm purpose, kindness and phenomenal potential. I could see that all the ingredients for an exceptional educational experience were right here. How would you sum up the school in a sentence? We only need three words: girls enjoying success.
BARBARA ELLIOTT Channing School
What makes your school different? We’re tolerant and inclusive, respectful
and supportive, and quietly ambitious. Because of this ethos, girls enjoy far greater success here than they would in any other school (in my humble opinion). How would you describe the school’s atmosphere? Focused. Aspirational. Optimistic. Calm. Which extra-curricular activities are you proud of? Our Duke of Edinburgh programme; an astonishingly high standard of music;
increasingly good sporting achievement; and drama, which will have a new home in our Performing Arts Building on Highgate Hill.
Channing School, The Bank, N6 (020 8340 2328; channing.co.uk)
How do you balance these with the academic side? All work and no play makes for dull human beings! We value the development of teamwork, resilience, stamina, flexibility and creativity as much as academic endeavour. That’s what future employers will be crying out for.

C O M I N G T O C O L I N DA L E A major new £1 billion development is coming to north west London with a construction programme stretching over the next 12 years. Colindale Gardens is set to provide much-needed homes for the Capital’s families, first-time buyers and young professionals alike
The regeneration scheme, which spans an impressive 49 acres, is transforming the disused 1960s tower blocks and surrounding land once known as the Peel Centre – the former Metropolitan Police training college – into a vibrant new community. Once completed, this mixed-use project will comprise a whopping 2,900 one-, two-, three-, and four-bed homes, nine acres of public green space, a shopping plaza and a school. Colindale has been designated a Housing Growth Zone by the Mayor of London, and this ambitious new development will complement the £4 billion investment in the regeneration of the Brent Cross and Cricklewood areas, providing vital homes for London as its key phases are completed over the next 12 years – with the first homes completed this winter. The overall philosophy set out by leading developer, Redrow, is to create a thriving and vibrant new community designed for freedom and convenience. Colindale Gardens aims to offer something for every demographic, at every stage of life – from young professionals looking to buy their first home, to families looking to settle, with the perfect combination of local amenities and parkland on their
doorstep. The scheme will also connect existing neighbourhoods in the area with a network of streets, paths and attractive rural spaces. Retail and commercial space is also proposed – 100,000 sq ft, in fact – allowing residents and locals alike to shop, eat, work and relax here. Meanwhile, a new primary school will provide places for 600 pupils and will benefit from sports fields and open spaces, capturing the ethos of Colindale Gardens with community as its central focus. The development is set to offer homes for everyone, with a variety of tenures providing high quality new abodes that are not only affordable for first-time buyers keen to get on the property ladder, but also for those not yet in a position to purchase, but who want to live in a thriving community with easy access to central London. The high quality homes have been designed to suit modern lifestyles and will be completed to a high specification. Interiors include contemporary kitchens with integrated Siemens appliances, and all apartments will benefit from private outdoor space. Landscaping is integral to the design, with the aim to create an attractive,
verdant environment for residents, and all buildings have been purposefully positioned to ensure that green space is always easily accessible at any part of the development. Designed to encourage residents to take advantage of its picturesque surroundings, Colindale Gardens will feature cycle paths and walkways linked to the wider area. Fitness trails will run throughout the development, complemented by an outdoor gym, inspiring a healthy, active lifestyle for residents young and old. Colindale Gardens boasts unrivalled transport links into central London, with direct 24-hour access at weekends to King’s Cross, Tottenham Court Road, Charing Cross and Waterloo via the Northern line service from Colindale, conveniently located adjacent to the development. Redrow is also investing £11 million into transport around the new homes, which will include enhancements to Colindale station as well as bus routes around the local area.
