April 2020
The definitive guide to London living 40
Editor’s letter Liz Skone James I’m delighted to introduce cover star Alice Eve, who is here to brighten up the April issue with her gorgeous shoot and thoughtful interview. When we talked, she pointed out that “it’s not the easiest time in the world right now,” and we couldn’t agree more. While we can’t sort out all of life’s problems, we are here to take your mind off them for a short while at least, starting with said interview. We caught up to chat everything from acting to zeitgeist, but with a focus very much on her role in Julian Fellowes’ much anticipated new period drama, Belgravia, which looks set to provide the ultimate Sunday night escapism. Couple that with self-care ideas in our style pages and chocolatey treats in the food section and you’ve got yourself the perfect night in. Meanwhile, if you’re having to cancel travel plans right now, cheer yourself up with dreams of future adventures – we discover escapes at home and abroad designed to help you to restore and reset. Finally, it seems strangely fitting at a time when we’re all retreating to our homes, that our focus this month is on front doors; batten down the hatches and shut out the world in style.

ou can never predict success,” Alice Eve tells me when we sit down to chat about her latest role. “It is zeitgeist, isn’t it? I certainly hope we entertain, because I believe that my role as an actor is to entertain. I hope we give an escape, because it is not the easiest time in the world…” Belgravia is no Downton Abbey, though. “I think it inhabits a slightly darker universe. There is definitely more scandal,” Alice explains. Set in the upper echelons of 19th century London, it weaves a tale of secrets, focusing on the Trenchards – a family who have worked their way into aristocratic circles – and a scandal they’re keeping secret. Alice plays a Trenchard. “Susan is the daughter of a wealthy merchant who marries into the family,” she tells me. “She is faced with navigating quite a difficult group of characters and ends up making some quite out there decisions in order to keep her marriage going and to navigate the problems she faces. I think she is quite divisive as a character, which I liked.” It was, says Alice, an interesting proposition. “I feel like she’s a modern woman in a Victorian drama, she sort of has the balls of a modern woman, and makes the choices that we are all encouraging each other to make at the moment – bold choices,” she affirms. “Julian Fellowes is one of the greatest TV writers of our time, if not in Britain the greatest one. I think being able to play one of his characters, certainly one of his women, was a real honour. He writes so well for women, and that was really appealing,” she explains. I wonder whether, as the child of acting stalwarts Trevor Eve and Sharon Maughan, it was inevitable that she would end up acting. “No,” she’s quick to respond. “But I think that it is an advantage for the child of any professional to go into that profession, because the chat around that job is in the house and in their DNA,” she adds. “I tried to do other things, but really, you go where you are wanted in life. I was welcomed at the start of my career into acting, and I was grateful for the reception and I was grateful to be given a job. I could’ve tried to pursue other things; I went to university thinking I would, but in the end I went where I was wanted.” Though Alice may have felt welcomed at the start of her career, her very first steps into the world of acting were not trouble free. She recalls the horror of her first ever audition.

“I think I peed my pants,” she laughs. “I decided at 12 that I wanted to act, and I think I did an audition for The Secret Garden, and I literally peed my pants before I went into the audition. I still went in. It was my first feeling of, I don’t know, almost a separation between the body and the mind. I was like, oh that must mean I’m scared, but I won’t be registering that until later…” she admits. Things have got a little easier since then, but there will, she says, always be a sense of apprehension around an audition. “They can be crushing,” she explains. “As we all know, being tested is hard…” Though her earliest roles were on the stage, Alice has been doing much more screen work in recent years. “It’s funny; my relationship with theatre has changed since I started,” she tells me. “Back then, I loved it. And I’m not sure I love it now. I suspect that I will love it again in my future, but it is certainly not for me right now. I know that when I was at school, I did Antony and Cleopatra, and I vowed at 17 that I would play her, so I think when I’ve got the right outlook, and I am in the right place mentally, I think I would like to play Cleopatra. But it would take a large chunk out of my life, so I had better be ready for it,” she laughs. What about on screen? Any dream roles? “Any role that suits the current stage of my life,” she ponders. “There’s a kind of weird synchronicity with acting, in that you live through some kind of pain, and then somebody brings along a story that kind of mirrors it in some way. Or echoes it. Or you’re doing a role and you think, oh my God, this is happening to me in real life! So as long as art and life kind of match in some way, you can bring truth to it, and you understand it. Then there is almost a sense of release, a catharsis, like a therapy to the job.” That’s professionally, but how does she find release outside of work? She has, she tells me, enrolled with the Samaritans. “That does sort of feel like a joke thing to say, but as we move out of our welfare state, or out of our completely secure welfare state, I do feel that philanthropy is going to become increasingly more important in our country,” she explains. “I think that if everybody takes on a bit of a philanthropic role, whether that be buying a cup of tea for a homeless person, or volunteering, or donating money, or whatever they can do, I think that is really important, because the world is changing so fast, and we have to change with it.”
Aside from the voluntary work, release comes, she believes, from being able to wind down successfully. “I am a great fan of the confluence of all of the schools that we have access to, whether that be Buddhism or meditation or acupuncture. Any of the doctrines that history has taught us; I engage in all and anything that is kind and gentle to the body and the soul. I am quite open to things like that,” she tells me. Which is not to say that she is entirely Zen 100 per cent of the time – she admits to being susceptible to the usual distractions. “The screen versus the book is a relationship I am struggling with at the moment,” she nods. “I will watch the bloody Instagram scroll for an hour and I could’ve read a whole book in that time. You really have to instil discipline in yourself.” Something that does help to instil discipline is her dog. “He helps me to relax,” she reveals. “He is here with me now, farting away. He’s called Buddy. I love to walk him; we have got great parks – Holland and Hyde. And he likes the coffee shop where they give him biscuits. I miss him when I’m away for work. It’s difficult…” He is not the only thing she misses about London when she’s not here. “I miss the people,” she declares, “because people in England, and London especially are so diverse and so aware and so open, I find. And so informed that it can be a very stimulating place to live. There is always something to do here. I just finished the latest issue of the New Statesman, which told me to go and see the Steve McQueen at the Tate Modern and the Tom Stoppard play, Leopoldstadt, and I am going to do both of those. Mostly I like to just find myself in somewhere like the Serpentine Gallery. And I guess I like the river, I like tracking the river, walking it.” Having spent quite a few years in America she is now very happy to be back in London. “I am renovating a house at the moment, in Holland Park,” she reveals, excitedly. “I am looking forward to moving back into that. We are hoping that it will be done by mid June. It is going to be very French, very rich, sumptuous fabrics and colours. It should be cosy.” Is she constantly on Instagram looking for ideas, I wonder. “No, I am so terrible at it,” she laughs, “that’s why I need help! So that I don’t need to look at ideas; and it would just be another excuse to look at the screen!” Belgravia is now showing on Sunday evenings on ITV

Ready to wear WELLBEING
Friends and former fashion buyers, Rosie Poole and Canan Hesselballe, have launched Rowley Hesselballe, an exciting new online label, just in time for wedding season. Traditionally, buying bridal wear involves multiple in-store fitting appointments, along with long wait-times, Rosie says: “We set out to create a stress-free shopping experience for women looking for beautiful and affordable pieces without the current 4-8 week wait-time.” Bringing modern and affordable luxury bridal, bridesmaid and evening wear designs online, the site offers next day delivery across the UK. Designed by Charis Charalambous – who honed her skills working with Mary Katrantzou and Erdem – with real women in mind, the collection features drapes and soft pleating in silks, lace, crepes and chiffon. The perfectly cut dresses and jumpsuits have been created to be easily altered and come in a palette of bridal white, red, navy, emerald and nude.
Wax lyrical With stress levels at an all-time high, we’re all about the self-care Sundays: the perfect way to wind down at the end of a busy weekend and prepare for the week ahead. A newly discovered ritual is Skin Alchemists’ gorgeous Midnight’s Serenade Intensive Skin Treatment. Simply light the candle and allow the wax to melt for 10 to 15 minutes while the relaxing scent of jasmine, rose de mai and sweet orange calms your mind. After blowing the candle out, leave to cool for a couple of moments before tipping the melted wax into your palm and using the therapeutic oils to treat yourself to a thorough hand and foot massage. Intensively moisturising and deeply relaxing, it’s the ultimate treat, and particularly therapeutic for those poor souls (or should that be soles?) in the depths of marathon training.

Whether you’re training for the marathon this month or just hitting the gym hard, we’ve found just the antidote to high impact training. Yin Yoga, Core Collective’s slowmoving new class encourages participants to hold deep stretches for up to five minutes, releasing tension throughout the body and helping to increase flexibility. In Taoist tradition, the theory goes that our bodies are made up of yang and yin tissues. Yang muscles are strengthened through repetitive movement that creates heat, whereas static holds enable us

to access yin tissue – fascia and connective tissue. We need the combination of yang and yin to keep the joints healthy. A 55-minute class will help to melt away stresses and leave you standing tall and feeling deliciously refreshed. It’s being offered on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons at the St. John’s Wood studio and we can’t get enough of it. The BYONIK treatment repairs skin at a cellular level and helps to lock in hydration
ON TRIAL
BYONIK I’ve tried many an unusual treatment in the line of work, but a laser facial that’s triggered by my heartbeat is a new one. It’s been developed in conjunction with NASA scientists and is being offered at the ultra-slick Cosmesurge clinic on Harley Street, though, so I’m reassured that it’s not just a gimmick. BYONIK is laser technology that is used with hyaluronic acid
wavelengths with the heartbeat – this is significant because skin cells have been shown to be more receptive to the osmosis process just before the heart beats. The pulse-triggered technology means that the cells are able to much more effectively absorb the hyaluronic acid and antioxidants used during the treatment. Don’t be put off by all the tech talk though, this might be science, but it feels more spa-like. The pulse oximeter finger probe is attached and I’m settled onto a comfortable bed and wrapped up in a blanket. My face is thoroughly cleansed to remove all traces of dirt and oils, and a very mild peel is applied. Next up, the laser. Hyaluronic acid is massaged into my skin and the probes are passed over my face. It is warming and thoroughly relaxing. I don’t want the treatment to end, but all too soon it does. I’m desperate to see the results, which are as impressive as I’d been promised: my skin is plumper and my complexion clearer. I look fresh faced and healthy. LSJ
gels to stimulate cell metabolism and improve cellular function – effectively reversing the signs of ageing at a cellular level. Each treatment is personalised to the individual’s skin goals – whether that be reversing sun damage, hydrating dry skin, improving the appearance of fine lines or minimising the appearance of scarring. And all of this with no downtime. My therapist explains that as every body is unique, each cell differs in its absorption capacity and behaviour. This new technology synchronises dual laser
Treatment times are 45-60 minutes depending on skin type. Cosmesurge, 51 Harley Street, W1G (020 7436 1300; cosmesurge.co.uk; byonik.net/en)
JEWELLERY
Garden of delights
As spring continues to blossom, our sartorial choices are increasingly inspired by all things botanical. It seems we’re not the only ones: London jeweller Annoushka, whose eponymous brand celebrates its tenth anniversary this year, has just launched her Garden Party collection. Taking its cue from the shapes of trees in her garden, it melds the surreal magic of Alice in Wonderland with the graphic lines of ’70s jewellery. “My garden is a mix of oversized topiary, unexpected stonework, concealed paths and hedges,” she says, “our very own wonderland and a place I love to hold parties. I wanted to make a collection that reflects the surreal shapes and shadows cast by the graphic topiary and the joy of the garden in summer.” Bold geometric pieces that move fluidly; real statement jewellery. Feast your eyes on this month’s finest Gizzi’s menu mingles experimental ingredients with nostalgic dishes
plays it safe with a refreshing Breton Fizz of rhubarb puree and Pet Nat. Early signs are promising. Our waitress, clad in Gizzi’s own leopard print designed trousers for trendy kitchenwear brand PolkaPants, leads us to our table and gives us a quick introduction to the menu, which encompasses French, American and English cuisine, giving experimental twists to nostalgic dishes. Starters are quick to appear, hand-dived scallops for me, seared and served in the shell, swimming in a sea of garlicky butter. They are delicious but I can’t help coveting the steak tartare my husband has chosen. Served with beef dripping, atop a brioche spread with Marmite and finished off with a miso-soy cured egg yolk it is triumphantly rich and moreish. My roast chicken main is crispy skinned and moist, served with crunchy shoestring fries and lashings of bread sauce. The ultimate comfort food done extremely well. As is the case with the gloriously garlicky Toulouse sausage and Puy lentils. Both plates are licked clean. We share the lemon meringue pie for dessert, a favourite from childhood, this has been given the Gizzi treatment: tart with a sherbet kick, it rounds the meal off in the perfect playful fashion. LSJ
HOT TABLE
Nitery With her trademark beehive hairstyle, winged eyeliner and penchant for animal print, celebrity chef and food writer Gizzi Erskine is a big character, and that exuberance is very much evident in the décor of her new restaurant pop up at St Martins Lane London. The dark blue walls are lined with eclectic artwork curated especially for the space by Cob Gallery artists, including original pieces by Noel Fielding, David Remfry and Paige Perkins. Dramatic moon-shaped lamps hang from the ceiling and the furniture is boldly mismatched.
We’re told that Gizzi’s concept channels Parisian ‘niteries’ – hedonistic, bohemian clubs that were frequented by creative types in the early 20th century, so it feels fitting that we visit on a Friday evening when Soho types are letting their hair down for the weekend. The music is pumping and the atmosphere is buzzing, so we decide to stop at the bar for pre-dinner cocktails before heading to the table. I opt for the Afterlight, a dangeroussounding-but-divine concoction of gin and absinthe with cucumber, apple juice, gomme syrup, lemon and egg whites, while my partner

FOOD&DRINK RECIPE
Mich Turner’s Chocolate Marbled Easter Eggs
MAKES 2 EGGS
Celebrity baker and founder of the Little Venice Cake Company, Mich Turner has just released her new book and we think it’s more than a little bit special. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced baker, Everyday Bakes to Showstopper Cakes (£20, White Lion Publishing) brings together a collection of 80 recipes that will transform your creations from simple to showstopper. Here, Mich shares a favourite Easter recipe from the book: “There is nothing more charming and thoughtful than taking the time to make homemade Easter eggs. It’s a tradition I introduced with my boys who each made one for the other, loading them with their favourite sweet treats. This ‘Rocky Road’ version is stuffed with marshmallows, honeycomb and chocolate covered mini eggs. Now, where is that Easter Bunny?”
METHOD To make the Easter egg Start by brushing 2 large plastic Easter egg moulds (165 x 110mm/6½ x 4¼ inch) with a little sunflower oil and place them in the refrigerator to chill. Place the butter, syrup and chocolate in a large saucepan and melt together gently over a medium–low heat. Leave to cool. Measure the remaining dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Pour over the melted chocolate liquid (reserving 3–4 tablespoons) and stir until fully coated. Fill a piping bag with the melted white chocolate and swizzle over the base and sides of the mould. Return to the refrigerator until the chocolate has set. Brush the moulds with a little of the reserved melted chocolate syrup. Spoon the chocolate biscuit mixture into each egg until packed full but not overloaded. Spoon the remaining chocolate liquid over the back of the eggs to help level and fill any spaces. Cover and wrap each egg mould with cling film pressing down flat. Refrigerate until firm – this can take 2 hours, but they can be kept in the fridge until required for up to 14 days.
INGREDIENTS Sunflower oil, for brushing | 275g (10oz) unsalted butter | 150g (5oz) golden syrup | 225g (8oz) dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids) | 130g (4¼oz) Maltesers | 100g (3½oz) mini chocolate eggs | 40g (1½oz) mini marshmallows | 100g (3½oz) broken Rich Tea biscuits | 100g (3½oz) broken digestive biscuits | 25g (1oz) melted white chocolate
To finish Simply remove the egg from the refrigerator and allow to stand at room temperature for 5 minutes. Remove the cling film and carefully but firmly press the mould to release the suction and the egg will easily drop out. Best served chilled.

MASTERCLASS
Perfect pasta
Lello Favuzzi, head chef at Mortimer House Kitchen knows a thing or two about pasta. Born in Sassari, Sardinia, he grew up there with his Sicilian mother and Puglian father, learning to cook as a youngster under the expert eye of his grandmother. His stellar culinary career has seen him working in La Gritta restaurant in Palau, Italy; and since moving to London, Franco’s; The Wolseley; and Corbin & King’s St Alban. He’s been overseeing the restaurant at Mortimer House for just over a year now, winning over members, guests and critics with his Mediterranean-based menu.
And now he’s offering to share some of his secrets in a series of pasta making masterclasses. Taking place in the intimate surrounds of the Kitchen Table, a home-inspired kitchen and dining space on the first floor of Mortimer House, each hands-on cooking class tackles the making of a classic pasta dish under Lello’s expert guidance – this month, on Tuesday 28th, is the turn of eggless pasta, Sicilian ‘Norma’ style, and Tuscanstyle Panzanella. After learning to cook the dish, guests will feast on it, cooked by the Mortimer House Kitchen team, as well as being able to take what they’ve created home.
When I was a child… I was always cooking, but it wasn’t an all-consuming passion. I left uni with a degree in classical literature and failed to get onto a graduate scheme as a manager in KFC (a real low point), then I thought screw it I’m going to get a job in a kitchen and do something I’m really interested in. I’ve not looked back… My fail-safe dinner party menu is… biryani loaded with crispy shallots and saffron. I always think that’s a proper occasion dish. Can’t say I get much time for dinner parties though, truthfully. My last meal on earth would be… my Nan’s roast chicken – easy. Emphasis on the gravy and the bread sauce. It can’t be beaten.

ETHICAL FOOD
Meat the butcher Undecided about the traditional lamb roast this Easter? Take a look at The Ethical Butcher, a new online premium butchery service for a new generation of meat eaters. Founded with the goal of being regenerative rather than simply sustainable, it champions producers whose low intensity, organic farming methods are kinder to both the animals and the environment, helping to rebuild ecosystems and locking carbon back into the earth. In this way they produce healthier meat that tastes better. And as part of the commitment to being as ethical as possible, all packaging materials are recyclable, down to the vacuum packs which are fully compostable – the first of their kind to be used in Europe. Definitely a cut above the rest.
When I feel down, I cook… cacio e pepe pasta. It’s a real comfort food for me. It was a staple at university because you only need a few ingredients to make something incredible. My favourite London restaurant is… almost impossible to pin down! In terms of consistency, value and sheer satisfaction it has to be the famous kebab house, Mangal 1 in Stoke Newington. There is serious contention about which is the best now there are three sites – in my opinion it’s the one down an alley on Arcola Street. It’s an institution! Along with Jack Croft, Will began a fourmonth residency at pop-up restaurant site, 10 Heddon Street last month. The chefs, formerly of Dinner by Heston, have designed a pared-down small plate offering with a weekly changing menu of ‘root to stem’ and ‘nose to tail’ dishes. 10 Heddon Street, W1B (07785 937900; fallowrestaurant.com)

NEW OPENING
A breath of fresh air Norfolk’s newest boutique hotel has just opened its doors and we couldn’t be more excited. North Norfolk, known for big skies and one of the country’s most unspoilt coastlines, is still, in parts, an undiscovered gem, but The Harper looks set to change that. Located in
a former glass blowing factory in the pretty village of Langham, the hotel has embraced its history with bespoke glass features and natural materials in its artfully mismatched yet harmonious design. The food on offer celebrates the hotel’s location where land meets sea. Think local produce but cosmopolitan menus, with a distinctive Norfolk twist. Guests can curl up in front of the woodburner; hang out playing board games or pool in The Den; enjoy sunny days in The Yard; and recharge with a spa treatment or
enjoy the indoor pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room facilities. Those looking to explore can borrow bikes or set out on one of a series of Harper Hikes – taking in the best of North Norfolk’s tranquil countryside. And if that all sounds too strenuous there is always The Harper’s very own pub crawl – being ferried from one pub to the next in the hotel’s Land Rover, with a designated driver provided, of course. Sounds idyllic. From £175 per night (theharper.co.uk)

Berlin fashion There’s still time to catch a very special exhibition of portraits of Karl Lagerfeld at the Hotel de Rome, a Rocco Forte Hotel in Berlin. The exhibition opened in February to coincide with the first anniversary of the designer’s death and will run until 20 May. Hotel de Rome has become a popular venue for out-of-the-ordinary art exhibitions, and this one is particularly special as Lagerfeld was a regular guest, attracted by
the hotel’s unique combination of contemporary design and protected historical architecture, coupled with its passion for fashion, art and style. Talking about his favourite Berlin hotel back in 2012, Lagerfeld said: “I like its style very much...” The expressive portraits on display were shot by photographer and Berlin resident Daniel Biskup nearly 20 years ago and show the designer in atmospheric locations around the city. Not to be missed. Admission free, for details, see roccofortehotels.com/hotels-andresorts/hotel-de-rome

Sip a cup of local coffee and tuck into freshly baked croissants at Iniala’s rooftop restaurant while watching the yachts sail out of Valletta’s famous Grand Harbour – the perfect start to a summer day – then head out to explore. Discover the authentic culture and rich history of the Maltese islands by visiting some of the city’s many historical landmarks, including the famous St. John’s Co-Cathedral or the less known, yet absolutely remarkable, Casa Rocca Piccola. Stop for lunch at Michelinstarred Noni, which serves delicious reinterpretations of local food. After an active day, pamper your skin at the Iniala Spa and then get ready to savour some cocktails at Alchemy cocktail bar on Valletta’s renowned Strait Street. The following day, enjoy a lazy morning at Iniala Malta before taking a stroll up the bastions to Valletta’s Upper Barrakka Gardens, where you can witness the canons go off at midday – a long-standing tradition that pays homage to Malta’s past. This also serves as a cue to locals: it’s time to indulge in a traditional Ftira from The Submarine. This delicious sandwich of tuna, capers and tomato paste is made with arguably the best bread in the world – il-oba Maltija, or Maltese bread. Wash this down with a pint of our local beer, Isk. Next it’s time to experience some local shopping. A visit to the atelier of Carla Grima, one of Malta’s most talented designers, will give you the opportunity to get the perfect outfit tailor-made for the next exciting event on your calendar. Iniala Malta opens next month with room rates starting from £302 (€350) per night, including breakfast. For more information, visit iniala.com/malta

An adults-only hotel in the peaceful Mallorcan village of Sant Llorenç provides the ultimate escape from everyday life, whatever the weather
WORDS by BECKY POMFRET
W
e leave a sunny London to arrive in a rainlashed Mallorca. In fact, it is raining so hard that the airport closes temporarily and our plane is forced to circle until it can land safely. We gaze forlornly out as we do eventually touch down, willing the weather to improve. But we are en route to Son Penya Petit Hotel and Spa, an adults-only boutique hotel set just a few miles from the rural village of Sant Llorenç, and as we drive out into the countryside, even the rain can’t keep our spirits down for long. Seeking time out from work and family commitments, we’ve been told that this hotel is the perfect place to recharge; we are very much looking forward to unpacking both our literal and metaphorical luggage. And on first impressions Son Penya does not disappoint. As we pull up in the pretty courtyard the sun comes out and we feel our hunched shoulders relaxing. It is gloriously peaceful: there are no other guests in sight as we make our way to reception to check in. Design-wise, the hotel, which has recently been renovated, is a striking example of pared-back elegance, incorporating natural elements of wood and stone. It is

contemporary, but in a soothing and comfortable way. Our room is situated just off the peaceful reception area (scented wonderfully with a fig-oil diffuser) and its simple, almost monastic design is minimalist, featuring bright white linen bedding, stone floors and Hessian mats. The bathroom is stocked with lovely, environmentally friendly amenities and a Jacuzzi bath, and there is a sunny private terrace. It is practically perfect in every way. After an early start and a long journey we’ve worked up an appetite, so we head to the restaurant, which is situated in a beautifully converted old barn. The hotel is low-rise and set into the natural landscape, and offers incredible views of neighbouring agricultural land. The spacious estate boasts five separate buildings housing twelve unique bedrooms. As we sip our first cerveza of the trip all we can hear is the tinkling of bells on sheep grazing nearby, and we breathe in the sweet scent of the orange and lemon trees that surround us. An outdoor pool, bar and barbecue area blend seamlessly into the natural landscape, and there is plenty of al fresco restaurant seating. The staff are both friendly and professional, offering lots of recommendations about what

to eat and drink. This evening is barbecue night, although with further showers threatening, the cooking happens indoors. On offer is a fine array of locally sourced meats and fish. We order the tuna and rib eye steak and push the boat out with three different types of potato side dish (never intimidated by carbs, we valiantly finish the lot). We turn down dessert, but our rather cheeky waiter decides we should try some anyway, and a very tasty apple tart and a chocolate brownie make a not altogether unwelcome appearance on our table. There is a good selection of Mallorcan wines on the menu, too, which probably don’t help our willpower very much. The short stagger back to our room is made memorable by a spectacular thunder storm, which thankfully clears the air for some proper sunshine the next day. We awake to the seductive scent of rosemary and lavender emanating from the rain-soaked and verdant hotel grounds. Breakfast calls: a plentiful menu of hot options alongside a cold buffet, consisting of locally-inspired patisserie and cute jars of granola and yoghurt. Some exercise is called
for after all of this indulgence. We discover that there are bikes available for guests to borrow, or even electric BMWs for those less comfortable on two wheels, but we choose to set off on foot instead. Lost in the scenery and the natural surroundings, our explorations lead us to a busy road, and we begin to wish that perhaps we had opted for the wheeled options after all. We potter back and plonk ourselves down on one of the comfortable loungers by the pool for a lazy afternoon. There is pool service, so the biggest effort we need make is pressing a button to summon chilled drinks. We do take a look at the well-equipped gym, situated next to the indoor pool, but that’s pretty much the extent of our exertions. We are here to relax, after all. More fine food awaits in the form of bowls of fish poke for lunch and then, for dinner, some incredible culinary mastery from the chef, who we decide must be a magician in his spare time. Tuna served in a box full of smoke is just one of his impressive dishes. We round off with a digestif enjoyed under the stars – the perfect end to a much-needed break. Son Penya has been the perfect spot to recharge our batteries; a true panacea for modern life and we think we’ll make it an annual pilgrimage.
A one night stay with breakfast costs from £175 (€200) per room per night based on two sharing. Hire of the electric BMW costs €59 per day. For reservations, call 0034 971 599 751 (sonpenya.com)

PERFECT PEACE
Escape the madding crowd and make the most of your precious days off at one of the country’s most high-tech spas WORDS by PENNY CLEMENTS
S
ometimes we all need to pause, take stock and recharge – to escape the stresses of modern living. Which is why I find myself booking a few days at Ye Olde Bell Hotel & Spa, in Nottinghamshire, where quality rest and relaxation at the multi-million pound spa, fine dining and total peace and quiet are promised. And, located as it is on the borders of Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, the hotel is perfect for those wishing to explore. Just a short train ride from central London, it feels a world away; tucked within the rural village of Barnby Moor, it’s moments away from the A1 but is set in over an acre of picturesque gardens. Steeped in history, Ye Olde Bell has a long history of hospitality, having been built as a coaching inn in the late 17th century. Following sensitive modernisation by the owners, local couple Paul and Hilary Levack, it now holds four AA Rosettes. There are 59 individually styled boutique rooms and suites, but despite its size the hotel feels cosy and intimate. Oak panelling, leaded windows, antique furniture and velvet draped curtains and bed canopies lend it the air of a Tudor manor house – albeit one that caters to every modern whim, naturally. We dine in on our first evening at Restaurant Bar 1650, where the creative menu focuses on fresh local produce. The setting is pretty special – beautifully elegant with original oak panelling and sparkling antique chandeliers. And a striking Art Deco bar takes centre stage. Having been awarded a coveted AA Rosette, it is no surprise that the food is gourmet and full of flavour. I tuck into steamed mussels, crisp pork belly and tarte tatin with rhubarb custard ice cream, and everything is excellent. Afterwards, we retreat to the drawing room with an after dinner drink and settle into a comfy sofa in front of the roaring fire, feeling very much like lord and lady of the manor.
While the food is good, it is the spa that has brought us – and most of the other guests – here. Built across two floors it was built a few years ago and provides the ultimate state of the art thermal spa retreat and has been awarded five bubbles by the Good Spa Guide. There’s a Turkish Rasul, a soul-soothing Sabbia Med sunshine therapy beach (where a vista of Cannes is painted on the walls and warm sun drenched sand covers the floor) as well as a 10m indoor-outdoor vitality pool. The six treatment rooms offer a menu of all the old favourites – super-soothing massages, age-defying facials, hydrating body wraps, manicures, pedicures and so much more. It really is a one-stop, fix-all retreat – just right for putting us weary city folk to rights. Swimsuits on and robed up, we are soon in total relaxation mode, thanks in no small part to the dedicated team of spa butlers who are on hand to cater to our every whim. With 10 different hot and cold experiences to explore, the Herbal Laconium is where the fun starts. Warmed to a comfortable 40-60°C it has been designed to gently relax the muscles and mind. Next, we step into the Stonebath room, one of only three in the country, where theatrical clouds of hydrating

steam are released as hot mineral coals hit a bubbling cauldron of cold water. The slightly humid atmosphere is said to promote better breathing, flush out toxins and increase blood flow. We take our time working our way through the various areas: from the Arctic snow storm, into the Alpine sauna and on through the shower experience (which offers both warm tropical storm and cold mist functions), finishing with an ice bucket shower (which we are not quite brave enough to see through). A Turkishstyle steam bath and a salt inhalation all add to this once in a lifetime experience. We check out at the end of our stay feeling utterly relaxed and rejuvenated, wishing that work and real life were not calling… Spa and stay packages from £149 per person, including full spa access, two course lunch, overnight stay and breakfast (01777 705121; yeoldebell-hotel.co.uk)

Retro revival
Online interiors boutique Rose & Grey have teamed up with Polish furniture makers 366 Concept to create a collection of mid-century inspired seating in retro fabrics. With a focus on texture, the Marble range comprises a chenille material with an irregular weave, while the Coco boasts a bouclé texture most commonly found in fashion. In earthy tones of cream, beige, mustard and taupe, Granny’s angular easy chair never looked so chic. From £630 (roseandgrey.co.uk)

Style-savvy city dwellers will love the new Cove Collection by Vênoor. Offering a cool, Scandi aesthetic, the furniture range features nifty space-saving pieces from coat racks to hanging shelves and sturdy storage ladders, all compact and slender, designed with a minimalist approach. The pieces are crafted from sustainably grown wood and finished with a water-based, nontoxic lacquer, making the collection both eco-friendly and economical on floor space. From £45 (venoor.com)
With our thoughts (tentatively) turning to outdoor dining this spring, The Conran Shop have launched their SS20 offering with a fresh, global perspective. INTERIORS Choosing a colour for your front door is quite the commitment. Jet black is austere but stately and will immediately add an air of sophistication to your home – just look to the iconic 10 Downing Street for imposing grandeur. Lipstick red is another classic with a striking presence that screams “London” and works across any architectural property style. But if you prefer a subtler approach, luxury paint brands such as Little Greene offer a range of exterior tonal shades inspired by nature. In Celestial Blue, the inviting front door in our opening image works beautifully against the earthy brickwork. And it recalls the clearest blue skies, whatever the weather. From £32 for 1 litre (littlegreene.com) For a truly unique entrance to your home, consider a reclaimed front door and the world is your oyster on the design front. A salvaged door can offer otherworldly charm, especially if it has come straight from the dusty roads of Marrakech, or the entrance of an ornate Indian village temple. Look for hardwoods like oak and mahogany, which age well and make a stylish statement with their vintage appeal. And be sure to measure up with precision. While the Capital’s antique emporia can be a joy to delve into, you can find your perfect reclaimed door online, too. We love this rustic pair of teak doors from English Salvage. (englishsalvage.co.uk) If your home boasts one of London’s enviable addresses, say it loud and proud with a door number that really stands out. Unless they’re particularly decorative in design, most fanlights offer a plain rectangular pane that makes the perfect canvas for those all-important digits. Window film specialists, Purlfrost have a comprehensive range of bespoke door number options, from the Art Deco-inspired to the clean-lined and contemporary. Finishing a period
front door with striking contemporary graphics can make a heady contrast – as in this arresting entrance in a stylish shock of pink. From £45 per sq m (purlfrost.com)
While mixing and matching styles can make for an attractive contrast, some of the smartest London homes feature reproduction front doors that have been thoughtfully designed to complement the building’s period architecture. Whether you’re going for an elaborate entrance to your Edwardian townhouse, complete with stained glass panelling, or a smart utilitarian door with a single glass pane for your ’30s semi, make sure your choice is a sympathetic one. Bringing frontages to life with bespoke, handcrafted front doors, The London Door Company specialises in finding the perfect fit for your property – from the sleek and ultramodern to the ornate and distinctly Victorian. (londondoor.co.uk) High-end door furniture is well worth the investment if you want to make a good first impression. Like shiny house jewels, a smart letter plate, bell push or knocker can make all the difference to your front door’s appearance. These characterful finishing touches, whether in aged brass, distressed gold or polished nickel, bring personality to your exterior and can offer a warm and welcoming accent to an otherwise sombre front door. Beardmore is a longestablished London-based brand that knows architectural ironmongery inside and out. Their huge range of luxury door furniture will have your property’s entrance positively gleaming. (beardmore.co.uk)

AIVEEN DALY Upholsterer
It’s little wonder Aiveen’s elegant home is full of sumptuous textures. The London-based designer specialises in luxury textile interior commissions, and is known for her distinctive handcrafted work WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by JAMES MERRELL

aly’s four-bed Edwardian house is situated, she says, in “arguably the friendliest street in London”. She lives with husband Conrad and daughters Agnes and Valentina – as well as a soon to turn three cockapoo named Baci (“the girls have been planning her birthday for weeks!”). Like anyone with a penchant for period property, she fell in love with the high ceilings, noting “good light” on her list of non-negotiables. But for Aiveen, getting to know the people she shares her vicinity with is just as important. “I always go and knock on the door of the neighbours to introduce myself before buying a property,” she explains. “You get some good insights and it’s good to know who you are going to be sharing your street with.” The family moved in five years ago but not before this truly ambitious renovation project was realised. “We gutted the entire house,” Aiveen says. “You could see right through three storeys into the loft from the ground floor. We had new plumbing, electrics, sash windows, everything! All of the original moulding had been ripped out but our lovely neighbours let us nose around so we could reinstate something similar to what was originally there. The good thing about starting from scratch is that everything works. We were also able to put in amazing insulation, which is transformative in so many ways.” Aiveen studied traditional upholstery at London’s Met University where her love of fine craftsmanship was nurtured – her work typically features intricate beading, pleating and complex fabric manipulation techniques, whether that’s with pearls, silk or butter soft leather. Naturally, luxurious fabrics feature heavily in every room here: “I love using antique textiles as a starting point for colour,” she explains. “In our living room I had some 1920s Indian saris, which I mixed with a tobacco linen dusty blue, sage and soft pink. And I bring in a lot of pieces from my work. I like testing how they operate in a real life setting to make sure they stand the test of time.” The use of fine fabrics brings an undeniable softness and homely warmth to Aiveen’s modern glamour aesthetic. And beyond the sumptuous curtains, cushions and pouffes, this soft touch can be found in unexpected places, too: large-scale artworks and furniture pieces protrude with tactile materials. Even Aiveen’s elegant sideboard is finished in a soft creamy leather. “Texture gives such warmth to a space,” she enthuses. “We’ve used tapestries, rugs and woven lampshades, as well as some of my sculptural suede wall hangings.” With a passion for mixing old and new, the house, while finished to the nines, still looks lived in and loved, and much
Your home, your life
of that is thanks to Aiveen’s interiors shopping habits. She namechecks Hermès for fabric, Atelier Mériguet-Carrère for paint, Marrakech Design for tiles and Atelier Areti for lighting as her favourite brands. “But I also buy a lot of vintage and antique pieces from Kempton Market and abroad,” she reveals. The look, it transpires, has grown organically, with Aiveen incorporating thoughtfully selected pieces over the years. “It’s been a very gradual, loving process,” she says. “We’re still adding artworks, ceramics from holidays in Italy... and I love getting family photographs printed. I don’t have particular schemes in my head but I do have a desire for a welcoming energy and calming colours.” While her creative eye for putting a room together is to be revered, her application is somewhat more relatable. “Whilst I admire the rigour and processes used by interior designers, my own home has been a series of fits and starts,” she admits. “I get obsessive for a while and then back off completely for several months. The house will never be finished but I guess that is part of the fun.” So what does the year ahead hold for the upholsterer extraordinaire and her creative team? “We’re working on a lot of textile artistry commissions using hand painted leather and wire to sculpt shapes such as butterflies and flowers,” she says. “Other, more abstract commissions include pleated silk, lacquer and leather. We’re trying to focus on sustainability to see how we can use up small offcuts of leather, for example. And we’re trying to encourage clients to bring pieces to us to be luxe-cycled, where we add some of our beautiful embellishments to their existing furniture to reimagine it, rather than throwing it away or buying something new.” aiveendaly.com

AREA FOCUS MEET THE LOCALS
Debbie Wiseman OBE, Composer Being on the Highgate/ Hampstead border and at the junction of three boroughs, there are always plenty of things to see and do. If it’s a bright, clear morning I like to start my day early with a walk in Waterlow Park or at Kenwood – depending on my mood and how much time I’ve got before I need to start work at the piano. Birdsong inspired the French composer Olivier Messiaen and it does the same for me, so it’s nice if the birds are in full flow! Then, maybe a mint tea and something
tasty from Le Pain Quotidien or GAIL’s, and if necessary a swift pit stop at one of the lovely food shops on the high street to pick up anything my husband may have forgotten to get… Côte is great for lunch, whether for business or pleasure, as is The Spaniards Inn across the border in Hampstead, and slightly further afield is Sherrards, where they sell fantastic cupcakes, among many other delicious things. I used to take my niece and nephew to the Highgate Pizza Express when they were
little; and now they’re older they occasionally take me! If there’s time after lunch there’s the bookshop and the stationery shop next door to each other, which suits me as I like books about great music figures in history, and I’m also an incurable stationery nut – I like nothing better than a blank pad on which I can write some music notes. Debbie’s album The Mythos Suite with Stephen Fry is out now on Decca Records (debbiewiseman.co.uk)

Street hearts Fitzroy Park
A pretty private thoroughfare linking the village to the Heath. No two houses are the same on this popular road. You’ll find everything from rambling period detached houses to architecturally striking modern glass homes.
Pond Square
Though the pond is long gone, we still love this pretty square set right in the historic heart of Highgate. Surrounded by attractive Georgian properties, many of them listed, this has to be one of our favourite Highgate hotspots.
Hillway 1. Ben Sloane Aston Chase
“Highgate is a picturesque, serene and village-like area, where a slower pace of life is on offer, making it perfect for couples and families. It’s oozing with history, culture and beautiful 18th century architecture, not to mention plenty of green spaces and charming gastropubs.”
2. Giselle Harrison Litchfields
3. Mark Sumray
“It’s never been a better time to come and live in Highgate. The lovely green spaces, excellent schools and historic associations keep the village alive. The area continues to be amongst north London’s hotspots and property prices hold up well as demand is always healthy, whichever general market conditions prevail.”
75
Dexters
“Highgate remains one of the last ‘villages’ in London and houses here are in tremendous demand. The market has been incredibly active so far this year with lots of buyers chasing very few properties. As a result we have had a number of competitive bidding situations enabling us to achieve premium prices for our clients.”
Running through the centre of the exclusive Holly Lodge Estate, linking Dartmouth Park with Highgate Village, and with easy access to the Heath, the detached mock Tudor houses on this quiet road are highly sought after family homes.

This historic pub dates back to 1663 when Highgate, without its enviable transport links, was a mere village on the outskirts of the Capital. But despite being able to catch the Northern line to the city in a flash, locals still appreciate Highgate’s village vibe, and that’s thanks in no small part to The Flask. “It’s a firm favourite,” says Benham & Reeves’ Ivan Hrissimov. “Here you can enjoy a quiet drink or a delicious threecourse meal – Sunday lunch being a particular treat! And Highgate’s long-term locals will tell you that you can’t go wrong with this inviting gastropub on the tree-lined North Road. “If I had to recommend anywhere it would be this pub,” says Jeremy Karpel from TK International. “Fantastic food (the best fried chicken wings in London), a great bar, excellent vibe and a good selection of games and books to while away those rainy April Sunday afternoons.” 25 North Road, N6 (020 8340 1780; theredlionandsun.com)

Greens of Highgate, N6
Tom Hadley from Chestertons recommends this award-winning, family-run greengrocers and flower shop as his Highgate hero, and it’s easy to see why. A visual feast awaits you on the high street with its cheery façade half-hidden in beautiful blooms. But where there’s flowers there’s also hearty foodstuffs on offer. Inside you’ll find an abundance of colourful fruit and veg. Greens is well worth a visit on foot, but local residents have a free delivery service, too. Here, there’s really no excuse not to get your five-a-day. 3 Highgate High Street, N6 (020 8340 0985; greensofhighgate.com)
The Highgate Hill cable tramway opened in May 1884, running along the route of Archway Road. The first cable line tramway in Europe, it featured five double decker cars with capacity for over 50 passengers. Running at 6.5 miles per hour, it cost 2d to go up and 1d to come down. Not a financial success, service stopped between 1892 and 1897 after an accident, and terminated permanently in 1909. 76

THE HEAD year. Learn in whichever way works for you, then test, test and test yourself again, using past papers and mark schemes to really familiarise yourself with the overall exam style and requirements. Use tech that supports your learning style. If you’re a visual learner, use mind map apps or YouTube videos. If you learn by listening, play relevant podcasts, or record yourself and play it as you go about your day. And if writing makes things stick for you, try drafting plays or speeches around a topic. Write cheat sheets now, with all the key facts for each topic – they’re really useful, and you’re likely to get stressed if you leave them until later.
LET’S TALK
From egg hunts to eggheads
For many children, the Easter break is about eating their body weight in chocolate. But for those preparing for GCSEs or A Levels, it can mark the start of pre-exam panic. “Easter is when many students consolidate their knowledge and work out their strengths and weaknesses,” says Jenna Gayle, a tutor at the Londonbased agency Young Giants Tutoring. “This means they can begin to feel overwhelmed – especially if they’ve left the hardest things to last.” Here are Jenna’s tips for getting exam ready without piling on the pressure. For students “Learn, test, revise”: for maths and science subjects, practising exam questions is the best thing you can do at this stage. For the humanities, essay planning will be more helpful, as the exam questions tend to be similar every
For parents The more involved you are, the better – it makes the task feel less insurmountable. For example, encourage your child to spend the last half hour of a revision session chatting to you about what they’ve learnt. Avoid giving ultimatums or offering rewards around grades. It’s hard to change a grade at this stage, and extrinsic motivation can backfire. Your support and interest will have a greater impact on your child’s motivation. Be aware of your child’s limits: they can’t revise for eight hours straight a day. Regular breaks are important for staying focused and productive. Remind your child of why they’re doing the exam. It helps them to divorce the exam itself from how the qualification will help them to achieve their ambitions. younggiants.co.uk

A DREAM HOME
T H E U LT I M AT E DESIGN
Anna and Jake had a long-term plan to build their dream house on the River Thames. But it took some time to find the plot, acquire planning permission to knock down an existing dwelling to then build a new home to their exact specification
BUILD
F
ive years ago, they found the perfect location – a 2/3 acre plot with uninterrupted views of a pleasant stretch of the Thames, complete with its own pontoon. The couple and their two children moved into the existing property there and started to think about creating their new dream home. Working with Exedra Architects, they drew up initial plans with firm, clear cut ideas about living areas, leisure and most essential, touches of unexpected drama. One of the biggest challenges was finding the right company to translate their blueprint plans into magnificent reality, and after checking the credentials of half a dozen top end housebuilders, they selected Octagon Bespoke. Anna comments, “With over 40 years’ continuous experience in the luxury property market, along with reassurances from friends who owned Octagon homes, we felt we could entrust our lifelong dream of building the perfect house to the Octagon team, a decision we have never regretted from day one.” The front of the house has all the classical good looks expected for an imposing house flanking the Thames. Set well back from the road behind period style iron railings, the white rendered exterior walls, large sash windows, elegant portico entrance, and resin gravelled drive emit a timeless quality, paying deference to the original villas nearby.

FABRIC PROMOTION
At Octagon, we have 40 years experience and an unrivalled reputation for building spectacular, one-of-a kind homes to the highest standard of luxury.
Walking through the front door, after taking in a most dramatic trompe l’oeil decorated entrance hall, visitors discover a contemporary, light flooded open plan interior. A specially commissioned digital mural extends from the front door, around the vast swathe of walls, and descends via a circular sweep of marble stairs to the lower ground leisure and fitness suites. “We fell in love with mural artist Adam Ellis’ style after discovering some of his earlier work at The Ivy in Richmond. He creates bold, colour rich wall coverings to order, and will incorporate features that have a special significance for the client. For us, it was important to include the flora and fauna we grew up with, and because my husband is passionate about Greek mythology, ancient temples and figures were woven into the brief. Adam and his artists install the mural, and then embellish on site with their own palettes and paintbrushes.” On the first floor are five substantial double bedrooms, three en-suites plus a separate family bathroom, and Anna’s own study, with rough-hewn African rosewood ‘work bench’ facing out of a wide internal window into the lower living levels of the house – the perfect matriarch look out post. The second floor is devoted to the master suite. The family are passionate about the river, and love relaxing in their new waterside summer house. They are also seriously into sport, enjoying regular kayaking trips on the Thames and making the most of their own indoor leisure and fitness facilities. The home is finished with a gym of gargantuan proportions and a playroom with full size pool table, cinema screen wall, and long 90-degree angle cocktail bar. Anna concludes; “We were ambitious with our vision for design and specification and our team of architects, suppliers, and not least Octagon have been there every step of the way. We all absolutely love our new home, so it has been worth it, and if we had to do it all over again, we would – as long as Octagon was at the helm.”
Our discreet bespoke service takes clients on a journey from planning stages through to handing over the keys, with our in-house experts on hand every step of the way. Octagon Bespoke can help you transform your vision into something truly unique. Bespoke projects start from £1m.
