March 2021
The definitive guide to London living Editor’s letter Liz Skone James With Storm Darcy’s snow swirling down outside my window, it’s hard to imagine that when this issue is printed, spring will be well and truly on its way. Though, with the first daffodils and crocuses poking their heads through the blanket of white in the garden, the signs are all there (it’s those brave buds that have inspired our floral-themed Wish List this month). And with the vaccination programme in full swing now, the first shoots of hope for the return of a more normal life are apparent across the Capital, too. While writing this issue, we caught up with some of the team coordinating delivering jabs to the folk of Hampstead Garden Suburb, to talk about their invaluable work – see what they had to say in our Local Love feature. Cover star Taj Atwal is also feeling positive about the outlook over the next few months. If you can’t quite say the same just yet, she’s hopeful that her latest role, in Kay Mellor’s The Syndicate, should raise a smile or two, and take collective minds off the current situation. We’re hoping our kitchen feature might do the same – if you’re dreaming of hosting family and friends again, where better to do it than in a brand new kitchen? It never hurts to dream big!

ART APP
Zebra One Gallery If, like us, you’ve missed gallery-going, there’s a tech solution that promises to be the next best thing. Hampstead’s Zebra One has launched a free augmented reality app, designed to allow the Capital’s contemporary art lovers to try out its shop range at home. Gallery director Gabrielle Du Plooy says that “during these difficult times we have had to take steps to reach a stay at home audience. We’re delighted with the way things have turned out. The app allows you to view our artists’ work on your own walls and try before you buy, it’s a fantastic tool for both the gallery and clients.” Ever wondered how Terry O’Neill’s portrait of a bodystockinged Kate Moss would sit above your dining room mantelpiece? Or how Banksy’s Choose Your Weapon, with its bright magenta background, might liven up the living room? Now you can find out. FILM
Against the Tides From 1 March
Like all the best stories of human triumph over adversity, Stefan Stuckert’s latest feature-length documentary tugs at the heartstrings – and it dares us to dream big. The award-winning film follows British ultra-marathon swimmer Beth French as she attempts the Oceans Seven, an extreme challenge to swim seven of the world’s most perilous sea channels. It’s the definitive test for long distance swimmers and none have completed it within a year. But this former ME sufferer and single mum of an autistic boy is determined to do just that. As her journey unfolds, Beth is met with hypothermia, sharks, jellyfish, wild weather and of course, paralysing fatigue. A visceral, uplifting and emotional tale of love, hope and dogged determination. Available on demand from iTunes, Amazon Prime, Google Play and others (againstthetidesfilm.com)

BOOK
500 Walks with Writers, Artists & Musicians By Kath Stathers
In a timely publication that marries global travel with the arts – both of which are sadly in short supply – Kath Stathers invites us to follow the footsteps of some of our greatest creatives. From epic pilgrimages to small village meanders, there’s a whole world to delve into. Visit Leonard Cohen’s beloved hometown of Montreal, discover Jules Verne’s centre of the earth (AKA Iceland’s Snæfellsjökull volcano), or take in Gustav Klimt’s breath-taking summer retreat, Lake Attersee in Salzkammergut. Of course, there are equally fascinating London jaunts to enjoy, too – and now. But this is a book to keep close at hand for when the world really does open up again.
ONLINE THEATRE
Good Grief Until 15 April
Starring Sian Clifford, best known as Fleabag’s hilariously neurotic sister Claire, and Nikesh Patel, who audiences will recognise as Foaly in Kenneth Branagh’s Artemis Fowl, this is an innovative production for our strange times, billed as a hybrid of theatre and film. A romantic comedy about grief, the play, written by Lorien Haynes and directed by Natalie Abrahami, is a funny, brutal, irreverent, and quintessentially British affair. Rehearsed over Zoom and produced under strict Covid guidelines, Good Grief is born out of serious limitations – but that’s also its triumph. Indeed, an entirely new theatrical format has emerged. Not to be missed.

INTERVIEW
41
fabricmagazine.co.uk
Life isn’t exactly going swimmingly for Taj Atwal’s latest character, Roxy. Having spent her life believing that she is unable to have children, she finds herself pregnant, only to be told by her long-term boyfriend that he no longer wants to be with her. As if that weren’t stressful enough, her lottery syndicate believes it has been robbed of a winning ticket. Nevertheless, Taj thinks that this latest series of Kay Mellor’s The Syndicate is pure entertainment – in fact, the perfect antidote to lockdown lows. “I know that the way I am describing it sounds heavy, but the way that Kay writes is so salt of the earth,” she explains. “There are so many poignant, so many funny moments in this whole thing. And at the heart of it is this set of characters who absolutely stick by each other through thick and thin. There is just so much fun in this journey. I am hoping that after this lockdown, people are just going to be looking for something exactly like that.” Taj first worked with Kay when she played nervous young mum Jasmin in comedy-drama In the Club. Knowing how she worked, the writer approached Taj about playing this part when the scripts were still in development. “She sent them to me and said, ‘Look, there’s this character Roxy, and I really want you to play her… Have a read of the scripts’,” she recalls. “I think that as an actress it is always flattering to be given the choice of whether you want to do a job or not. That is what I strive for at least, to have that choice.” This was, of course, pre-Covid, but Taj believes that some sixth sense was responsible for her accepting the part. “I was also asked to go back to Line of Duty [she played PC Tatleen Sohota in series five of the cult hit], so I had a couple of options. I feel like subconsciously I knew that
Your home, your life
something was going to happen though, because I wanted to do a project that was really warm, loving, wholesome…” she explains. “I loved the script. I think it was just what my soul needed at the time.” It was, Taj says, everything that she thought it would be and more, despite being a distinctly unusual filming experience. “We were meant to start when the first lockdown happened, so we just delayed the shoot. Then we started as soon as lockdown was lifted. But we were filming in Leeds, which went into its own local lockdown the first week that we were there,” she recalls. “We didn’t see any of our family and friends pretty much for four months straight, on top of the previous lockdown. But weirdly, it was just the most amazing experience that I have had. I think we knew subconsciously that we had to make it work. You just have to find the joy in it – and we all tried that bit harder to do that. And when we went to work it just felt incredible because we were at work and we were so grateful to be working, and luckily, we all got on,” she laughs. The events of the last year have hit those in the arts sector hard, but Taj has been lucky to have worked pretty much throughout. “To me, it has felt like I have always been working, because if I was not acting, I would be writing, and if I wasn’t writing I was doing a voiceover. So, I am thankful that there is always something that I can put my mind to,” she explains. The writing in question is a film, but at this time Taj isn’t really able to reveal too much about it. “I haven’t got the full green light yet,” she apologises. “But I am working with some fantastic people, and I am hoping that it will go ahead, and then hopefully I would like to write a series for it as well.”
42
Though she loves writing, she admits that it does not come as naturally as acting. “Writing is kind of a love/hate thing. A labour of love for me – I have to try and force myself. Acting feels way easier. As soon as I am in that world it just feels like home and it is so natural. Writing is a bit more of a practice, but I will get there.” While work has been happening, social distancing and restrictions have meant that physical auditions haven’t. “It has been so long since I have been in the room now, because of Covid, that I will probably be terrified when I go back,” she admits. “I always used to be, but there was this interview that Bryan Cranston gave, and he said that you should go into the room prepared, but prepared to work. It is a working environment; you are there to work the script and discuss. And I can’t remember exactly what he said, but it was something like that, and it made me chill out so much more, and realise that it is a two-way situation, and that there is nothing to be scared of, you are just going in there to explore the character. And that really took the pressure off a bit.” That first, post-Covid audition can wait a little longer, though, as Taj already has her next project lined up, a cross-cultural rom com directed by Shekhar Kapur. “It’s a film called What’s Love Got to Do with It? with Lily James and Emma Thompson and Shazad Latif, and it is an absolute joy,” she tells me. “It is another really uplifting story that I cannot wait for people to see. I am all about the uplifting stuff at the moment.” While filming of The Syndicate was postponed during the first national lockdown, the industry has now found ways to operate within the restrictions, and work is just beginning on What’s Love Got to Do with It?. “I got to meet the cast

INTERVIEW
“There is just so much fun in this journey. I am hoping that after this lockdown, people are just going to be looking for something exactly like that” playing my family the other day – we got to do a photoshoot – and, again, I feel like everyone is just so grateful to be working, and it is just such an amazing, positive, loving environment – minus the million virus tests a week,” Taj jokes. “I am having four this week, tomorrow will be my fourth; I’m not sure that I have got any nose tissue left. When I first started having them, the swab was excruciating, but now they put it straight in, and it goes right up, and it comes out and I don’t even feel it!” All the tests in the world will not bring theatre back just yet, though, and this is something particularly close to Taj’s heart, as she is patron of Theatre@41, a creative hub and performing arts centre found in the heart of York (where she went to college). “Theatre is an integral part of communities,” she tells me, explaining why she became involved, “and especially the theatre that I am a patron of, because it is for the people – for people with disabilities, for people from backgrounds where you wouldn’t normally be able to get into theatre, so to speak. And I just think it is such an integral part of each community and area, and I think it is essential to have something like that. As an outlet.” So, what are her thoughts on the current closures? “It is so tricky,” she sighs. “I always like to live in the end, and I always have high hopes for pretty much everything, and I see there being a silver lining. It is nigh on impossible that there won’t be. People want stories, and they want theatre, and we will have to open up again, and we just have to stay committed to that. Being vocal about it.” This positive mental attitude seems to be serving Taj well – indeed the only things currently keeping her awake at night are the naughty London foxes who have burrowed under her garden and are up to mischief at ungodly hours of the morning. “They are so noisy. They start at like four in the morning. Like, wow! Do it at a decent time, at least!” she laughs. Her happiness is infectious. “Sometimes the world can be difficult, and finding some happiness is a big achievement, especially this year,” she tells me. “God there’s been days I have wanted to give up, and just not doing that and having the courage to carry on, that’s a big achievement.” So, what helps her to carry on? “Maybe just finding the small joys in things,” she explains. “Starting small – a beautiful flower. Or some days I will come across a stranger who has just been so loving and kind. Or having a little sing song in the bath. It’s the really small, mundane things like that that make me really happy,” she grins. This happiness undoubtedly comes from feeling secure in herself, and for that, Taj credits inspirational writer and speaker Abraham Hicks. “The crux of what she speaks about is law of attraction, but really it is about your inner guidance,” she explains. “Coming home to yourself, and trusting that you are always supported and loved, universally. That you always have an inner love. And I always, always, always
turn to her YouTube videos any time I need any kind of guidance, or anything like that. I would say that she really inspires me. If you ever feel that you need a little bit of a positive boost, watch some of her stuff on YouTube. She is just absolutely amazing, and I have transformed my life listening to her. She is someone that I would love to meet one day,” she smiles. Right now, what would make Taj even happier, she says, is a sunny picnic with a big group friends – and no requirement for any kind of social distancing. “I love nothing more than going for a picnic,” she exclaims. “The amount of picnic baskets that I have got that I’ve never even used. That I bought before this all happened… I just want to go for a picnic with loads of friends, and drink loads of Champagne, and get pissed in a London park – we are lucky to have so many green spaces.” Taj really does feel fortunate to live here. “Luckily, with life and work, I have travelled pretty much everywhere, and I always come back to
45
London,” she reveals. “Even now, there is always something going on. There is always some place that I haven’t been, or that is new to discover. And I have been here for so, so long, and there are still places where I’m like, ‘oh, I haven’t been there before’, or ‘that’s new’.” Picnic aside, how would she spend a perfect unrestricted day in London? “There are so many gorgeous boutique local coffee shops, so supporting a little business like that, getting a coffee and a croissant; going to one of the many markets; going to a museum; walking along the South Bank; seeing a play; just sitting out on one of our green spaces…” she sighs. “So simple. We’ll be able to do all of those things again soon, I can feel it. We will!” Taj’s positive attitude must be rubbing off, because I’m starting to feel it too. Better times are coming. The Syndicate is on BBC1 and will be available for catch up on the iPlayer.

eSalons bespoke home hair-colouring service This past year we’ve learnt a lot from being at home; we’ve mastered the banana bread, tackled those DIY jobs and upped our game on the home fitness front, so what next? There’s no denying that the lockdown has left us all longing for our next hair colour appointment. So many have been booked, cancelled and rescheduled, just to be cancelled again… we’ve all been there. Frustrated to be left in the lurch once again, and with roots that desperately needed attention, I decided to take matters into my own hands, sans salon. Unlike anything you can grab off the shelves, eSalon, which launched 10 years ago, is an online made-to-order custom home hair colour service. What makes it most unique is that eSalon boasts a team of licensed experts, ready to work with you to create a completely personalised colour, mixed to cater to your every need (not to mention those of your locks). Meaning you can achieve salon quality hair in the comfort of your home, at a fraction of the salon price, very easily. After creating an online colour profile detailing my hair’s history and revealing my ultimate hair colour goal (this is no quick task, but completely necessary), I had an extremely helpful email conversation with an eSalon colour expert to make sure I was happy and to double check my colour choices before continuing with my order. A few days later, a beautiful bespoke package arrived with everything I needed to complete my new look, along with some specific but easy to follow personalised instructions. Feeling a little sceptical at first, I began to work the unique-to-me colour smoothly through my hair. I needn’t have worried, there was plenty to go around and the formula wasn’t at all drippy or messy, nor the smell overpowering. The whole process took about 40 minutes and was seamless from start to finish. The resultant colour is gorgeous – it is exactly what I had pictured, and I am truly happy with it. I feel pampered and I don’t think my hair has ever been left looking so shiny after a colour. Home colour kits work best if you’re looking for basic upkeep – if you’re hankering for a drastic change, they advise leaving it to the professionals – but this method, eSalon assures me, is perfect for minimal maintenance and helps to keep that salon quality feel for longer. Back on Zoom, the compliments flow; the eSalon team has delivered on its promise. PC

Your home, your life
How are you coping with the stresses of another extraordinary year? While keeping active is key to maintaining mental health, it’s also really important to know how to do absolutely nothing and totally switch off. But, as crazy as it sounds, finding that perfect Shavasana moment can be harder than kicking off that Couch to 5K challenge. If, like us, you find forced relaxation tricky, this clever eye mask might hold the key to helping you find Zen and fully give yourself to the
46
moment. The new Luna Eyes self-heating mask from Sensory Retreats is a warming, lavender scented single use eye mask that is the perfect accessory to help you power down, recharge and reset your mental batteries. Using patented air activated technology, the velvety soft masks are activated by oxygen molecules in the atmosphere, immediately starting to emit a soft, safe and soothing heat as soon as you open the packet and place them over your eyes. That heat, combined
with a luxurious lavender aroma, naturally triggers the brain to switch into ‘downtime’ mode. Along with the mask, Sensory Retreats also provides two soundtracks designed to help guide you in a micro or macro meditation. It’s time to relish in relaxation, rather than resisting it. Available individually (£3.95), in a pack of seven (£21) or as a subscription where you’ll receive 10 masks for the price of seven (£21), (sensoryretreats.com)

WELLBEING
All White on the Night Is it summer yet? We’re impatient, to say the least; even if things don’t turn out to be quite as free as hoped – there’s something about feeling the sun on our faces that makes everything seem that bit better. In the absence of guaranteed sunshine, we’re turning to a new vitamin IV concierge service – available in the comfort of our own homes, no less – to help us thrive. Intravenous vitamin therapy efficiently provides the body and cells with the vitamins, minerals and amino acids it needs, all delivered directly into the bloodstream. And because White Night’s very own team of ‘White Knights’ are also qualified medical professionals, they can still come riding to the rescue (in full PPE, naturally) during lockdown. Their consummate professionalism means that the whole process is utterly stress-free, even for those who feel slightly wobbly around needles. The B12 Booster Shot is our favourite little ray of sunshine, giving an instant dose of vitamin B12, to strengthen, energise and restore, leaving us feeling ready to face the day, refreshed and whole. And there are a host of other options available, too, from The Mother of All Antioxidants, a treatment fuelled by glutathione, our protector and guardian of cells, to The Recovery IV Drip, an instant dose of hydration made from a clever blend of vitamins and amino acids. The perfect rescue remedy.
The ultimate self care ritual, helping you to relax and recover in the comfort of your own home

Simon Rogan at Home What are your pandemic silver linings? For me, one of the things that has made the last 12 months bearable has been the opportunity to enjoy top class food at home in my PJs (though I am longing to get my glad rags on and get back out to my favourite restaurants). When the Capital’s restaurateurs were forced to close their doors, they quickly adapted to offer delivery services across the city and beyond. And, excitingly, vice versa, too, with chefs from afar offering delivery to London addresses. As a fan of Simon Rogan’s restaurant Aulis London, a trip to L’Enclume and Rogan & Co in the Lake District has been on the bucket list for a while. Travel plans are obviously on hold, but a nationwide delivery service launched last year has offered the opportunity to sample what’s usually on offer there, and, with a special occasion to celebrate, I jump at the chance. Weekly-changing menus have been designed to showcase seasonal twists on signature dishes. Available for nationwide delivery from Friday to Sunday, each menu uses produce from Simon’s very own farm, located in the Cartmel Valley, as well as his favourite regional suppliers. Our beautifully packaged food is delivered by courier. The simple instructions explain what everything is, and what to do with it. There’s even a QR code linking directly to step-by-step videos explaining how to cook and plate the food. With preparation time for each course of less than 10 minutes, it looks deliciously simple. And it is. We start with warm sourdough bread and tarn butter (so good that I lick the ramekin clean – a clear advantage of being at home). Next up, crushed saltbaked celeriac, dulse, trout roe and buttermilk sauce, which is divine and, with on-line tutelage from one of Simon’s team, looks the part, too. The belly pork takes moments to finish off and is a melt in the mouth treat, perfectly complemented by a cider and mustard sauce, vegetable hot pot and king oyster mushrooms. It’s a little while before we have room for the apple and chestnut Eton mess, but there lies the beauty of the eat at home feast – we retire to watch our latest box set in front of the open fire while we digest our mains, before finishing it off with a nightcap later. It is the perfect night in.
Feast your eyes on this month’s finest
Priced at £45 per person plus £10 delivery. A three-course delivery option is also available throughout zones 1-3 from Aulis London. For details of both offerings, see simonroganathome.co.uk

And, to round off the meal, there are a range of delicious vegan desserts to choose from – we love the Coco-nuts, made with creamy coconut heart between nut grains in espresso coffee, cocoa roasted hazelnuts and a vegan

That’s what you call a parenting win.
INGREDIENTS 120g brown rice flour | 80g almond flour | 3g cinnamon | 2g ginger | 2g bicarbonate of soda |1 egg | 90g butter/coconut oil (60g + 30g) | 120g honey (90g + 30g) | 1 and a half lemons | 3g sunflower seeds | 50g cashew nuts | 1 tsp vanilla essence | 5g dried marigold flowers | 3g turmeric
METHOD Preheat the oven to 170c (180c non fan assisted/ gas mark 4). Sieve the brown rice flour, almond flour, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger and bicarbonate of soda into a large mixing bowl, mix it together and make a hole in the middle ready for the wet ingredients. Whisk the egg and pour it into the hole you made in the dry ingredients. Melt 60g butter or coconut oil and add it to the dry ingredients with 90g honey. Carefully grate the skin of your lemons and add it to the bowl of ingredients. Then add the sunflower seeds and stir thoroughly. Use a spoon or your hand to make 15-20 small
balls with the mix and pop them on a baking tray lined with parchment. Slightly flatten them and make sure they aren’t touching because they expand when they cook! Bake for 15 mins until slightly golden. While they are cooking, make your icing by whizzing the cashews in a blender until they are the consistency of flour, with no lumps. Melt 30g butter or coconut oil and mix it with the cashew flour, 30g honey, 20 ml lemon juice and 1 tsp vanilla essence in a small bowl and then pop it in the fridge to thicken (10-15 mins). Next, carefully remove the yellow petals from your dried flowers and place into a small bowl, making sure no green stems remain. When your biscuits are ready, allow them to cool fully before spreading 1 tsp of icing onto each and then decorating with your petals. Store in the fridge for up to 5 days. Little Cooks Co recipe kits are priced at £12.99 a month. For details and to order, see littlecooksco.co.uk
What’s your signature dish? That’s a very difficult question to answer because for me, creativity never stops. I love to do so many different things; to make the ordinary extraordinary. I would have to say my petit gateau and my afternoon tea collections, although these are always evolving and changing. What do you cook on your days off? I cook so many things… Yesterday I made Chinese hot pot. I love to create experiences whereby we can eat and share together. I also made fresh bao with slow cooked pulled pork, soya sauce, sesame and ginger. To finish, I created Kueh Lapis, which is a delicious traditional South East Asian baked layered cake. Best meal you’ve ever eaten? My mum’s home cooked food, her chilli crab is the best. I really enjoy a meal together with my brother and sisters, our family rule is no mobile phone or any gadget on the dining table, so we can really appreciate the moment of being together. Guilty food pleasure? Champagne paired with lots of different cheeses and charcuterie. If you could cook for anyone, who? I would like to cook for Her Majesty one day, not just to bake a cake, but to cook a meal for her and her family – it’d be a true honour. What should no kitchen be without? A ruler of course. Precision skills and a thermometer are key, too. WELLNESS RETREAT
A world of pampering STAYCATION
It might be a while before we can hop on a plane and head overseas, but we’ve found just the tonic to temper the travel longing. For those seeking a little TLC after a truly difficult year, Sopwell House is offering the ultimate global spa experience at their Cottonmill Spa, with a selection of the world’s best experiences and treatments all under one roof (and just 20 minutes from Kings Cross). From Alpine infinity pools and German thermal baths, to Himalayan wellness retreats and Moroccan riads, Cottonmill has taken inspiration from around the world to create a world class facility that combines relaxation, connection with nature and restoration of the senses. Take the Panoramic Sauna, with its floorto-ceiling windows and geometric lines it was inspired by trips to the Tyrolean Alps, where mountain-top vantage points connect guests to the surrounding trees and landscape beyond. Meanwhile, the Deep Relaxation Room was inspired by high-tech Japanese sleep pods. A darkened, sensuous space with cocoon-like feels, it has been kitted out with six softly-vibrating Four Senses loungers, which change colour and play relaxing music. And the Spa Garden, with its lush greenery, tinkling water features, cosy cabanas and private hot tubs will transport you to blissful Bali. You know you deserve it.

RURAL ESCAPE
Back to nature
Forgive us if you’ve heard us mention this one before, but we’ve been looking forward to this opening for the best part of a year, so we’ve got everything crossed that it is able go ahead as planned this month. Set in a former glass blowing factory in the pretty Norfolk village of Langham, The Harper has embraced its history with bespoke glass features. Located in the heart of North Norfolk’s tranquil countryside, but close to the sea, we think that the 32-bedroom boutique hotel is the perfect place to recharge. Guests can curl up in front of the log burner, hang out playing board games or pool in The Den, enjoy sunny days and eat al fresco
in The Yard, or simply kick back and relax at the on-site spa, with indoor pool, steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and menu of stress-melting treatments. Meanwhile, those looking to explore the glorious setting can grab one of the hotel’s bikes or head off on one of the pre-planned rambling trails, before returning for a hearty feast to refuel. Food at The Harper honours the seasons and celebrates the hotel’s location where land meets sea – think cosmopolitan with a Norfolk twist. Sounds divine. Rooms start at £175 per night (theharper.co.uk)

We may have been advised against booking a foreign holiday, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take a break from our own four walls – we’re planning a little staycation right here in London as soon as it’s safe to do so. This spring sees the opening of Montcalm East, the latest hotel in the Autograph Collection. Occupying a prime Shoreditch position, with its striking, Op-Art inspired futuristic façade, it’s clear that what’s on offer here is a little bit different. The cultural offering, is a big part of the hotel’s appeal. Montcalm has worked with art curators CULTURE A to commission a selection of thought-provoking artwork, with a focus on local East London and emerging talent. And a partnership with Proud Galleries will see the Mezzanine level adorned with works by legendary photographers who continue to capture the most iconic people, moments and trends defining pop culture. The hotel even has its own photo lab, enabling guests to capture their own moments on film and then develop them. Say cheese. Opening rates from £199 on a B&B basis. 151-157 City Road, ECIV (marriott.co.uk)

Earth kind design
Outdoor Poetry, Ferm Living’s new garden collection, evokes the serenity of spring. Mixing patio pieces with smaller accessories, the designs come in a pleasing palette of warm earthy tones while materials focus on sustainability. Recalling an Egyptian clay pitcher, the Liba watering can is a sculptural affair made from 100 per cent recycled plastic; the modernist desert lounge chair and the handbraided Path hammock offer ultimate outdoor relaxation despite their unusual makeup of post-consumer plastic bottles, while the simple, stylish Peka bench is crafted from FSC-certified Accoya-treated pine. Spotlight on: NUDE
With smoked glassware enjoying a renaissance, our attention turns to NUDE, an Istanbul-based brand whose ethos is simple, considered design in a world of too much noise. Specialising in handmade, pure crystalline glass, the brand marries centuries-old artisanal techniques with wildly creative, cutting edge design. NUDE’s international talent pool of designers includes Sebastian Herkner, whose playful beret storage box is a thing of modern beauty. Medium beret
Emma Christmas’ new stoneware botanist pots for Poetware are full of the joys of spring. Handmade and each one unique, the smiley ceramics feature two separated vessels that can be filled with water to create a floral display that’s packed with personality – go wild with sticks, sprigs and blooms from the back garden and they’ll come to life. Beautifully craft-driven and highly covetable, you’ll have a little family before you know it. They may be best loved for their large scale retro refrigerators, but this month, Smeg are going small. KITCHEN RETHINK
LOCKDOWN HAS SEEN HOMEOWNERS HANKERING FOR MORE SPACE, PUTTING OPEN-PLAN KITCHEN EXTENSIONS BACK IN THE SPOTLIGHT. IF YOU’RE LOOKING TO EXPAND YOUR IMMEDIATE HORIZONS, HERE ARE SOME PROJECTS TO INSPIRE
WORDS by ALI HOWARD
LIGHT FANTASTIC Part of a complete renovation of what was described as a “dark and cluttered terrace house”, this contemporary kitchen extension not only opens up the rear of the property, but allows natural light to flood through the whole of the ground floor. With the use of Crittall-style doors and a simple glazed side return, the eye is drawn from the living room through to the open-plan kitchen/diner, and straight out into the entertainment-focused garden. A huge pivot door opens up onto the patio, which lies perfectly flush with the floor tiles, while oversized glazing, complete with a window seat, further adds to the kitchen’s abundant feel of light and space.
applied.studio
“Careful use of large-format glass meant that we could really open up the space and create an evident relationship between the main house and the outbuilding, which makes for a property where the client can embrace indoor-outdoor living year-round. We have worked hard to create something which will bring the homeowners happiness for many years to come.” Patrick Abrams, Applied Studio

INSIDE OUT Unusually, this modern kitchen doesn’t open up at the rear but at the side of the property. Nevertheless, the back wall is fully glazed and becomes the main feature with its eye-catching suspended metal shelving adorned with rustic earthenware and trailing house plants. While this is a trick that playfully blurs the boundaries between inside and outside space, the use of nature’s palette doesn’t end there. Industrial faux concrete is offset with a homely American walnut in the cabinets, while surfaces are crafted from a rich, visually textured stone. And while electrical lighting comes courtesy of a trio of arresting pendants above the island, this kitchen enjoys three-way natural light. eggersmanndesign.com
“The clients wanted a light and airy space which retained views into the garden on all three sides of the kitchen. The solution was to suspend metal shelves, worktops and slender drawers on metal frames to keep the space functional yet light. The window behind the hob was also perfectly specified to have the kitchen cabinets frame this view” Gary Singer, Eggersmann Design

Right and below: Forest green cabinetry gives the perfect contrast to this otherwise light and bright bespoke Scandiinspired kitchen
SCANDI URBAN This bespoke kitchen project mixes Scandi design influences with a cool utilitarian edge and the result is a truly inviting family space that looks every bit lived in and loved. With a generous floorplan to work with, the room is zoned into three distinct areas; kitchen, dining and living space, while huge patio doors and an exposed ceiling ensure it is kept light and bright – with plenty of height. In a creative use of materials, raw plywood combines with steel and concrete, while the pale fixtures are contrasted with an expanse of deep forest green cabinetry and a painted accent wall. With a cosy log burner and a laid-back dining table set-up, this kitchen is commodious but altogether homely. maincompany.com
Bottom: Sleek and streamlined, with its double height sliding glass doors, this kitchen has a gallery-like aesthetic
“The kitchen was designed to embrace its urban surroundings, we wanted to create a modern yet quirky space, full of character. To do this we chose to experiment with expressive materials: raw plywood adds freshness to the space while the use of steel and concrete adds a more industrial, urban edge.” Alex Main, The Main Company
A GLASS ACT When it comes to kitchen projects on a truly ambitious scale, it pays to look up as well as out. This stunning double height extension features slim-framed sliding glass doors designed to maximise on daylight. But the towering glazing does so much more than flood the rear of the property with sunshine. It also brings a dramatic, gallery-like aesthetic to the open-plan kitchen/living space – and that’s echoed in the oversized contemporary artwork on one wall and the vast expanse of exposed brick on the other. The kitchen itself is suitably streamlined, with a sleek, stone island and a slimline midcentury dining table meeting the minimalist lines of the three panes. iqglassuk.com
“We designed and installed an impressive set of double height sliding doors as part of the rear renovation to this London family house. The homeowners opted for a fully glazed double-height façade to create a welcoming, light-filled kitchen space that functions as the new heart of the home, while providing seamless access to the rest of the indoor and outdoor living spaces.” Lucy Thompson, IQ Glass

CARINE OTTOU When restrictions allow, this Cameroonian chef runs lively cookery classes and supper clubs from her Victorian terrace. Designer Yoko Kloeden has reimagined the property, putting the concept of a ‘cook’s kitchen’ at the heart of the home WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by CATHY PYLE

here’s nothing like 12 months of confinement to test out the liveability of a newly renovated family home. For Carine, who’s been locked down for much of the past year with her husband and their two girls aged seven and two, the property is everything she’d hoped it would be – even when it’s stretched to social limits. “It is simple,” she says. “The whole family can work and study in different rooms and meet at lunch or dinnertime for a beautiful get-together meal. We are still very much happy to see each other. It is an accomplishment.” This, of course, has everything to do with the property’s considered design, the handiwork of Japanese architect and interior designer Yoko Kloeden, whose residential projects are famed for their mood-enhancing qualities. The conversion included a comprehensive ground floor extension that has opened up the rear of the house, making room for an openplan and streamlined kitchen/dining space. The pièce de résistance? A kitchen island on castors, designed to be wheeled directly outside and onto a decked barbecue area, ready for an alfresco feast in which the chef takes centre stage. It is perfect for Carine. “I needed a space that would combine family life with my food activities,” she explains. “I wanted an inside-out kitchen and to have extended use of the outdoor space. I wanted my guests to see me cook and to interact while I’m busy… I wanted an open space that would do that.” The idea came about during the project’s early design phase when Carine and Yoko imagined one continuous table that went from dining room to kitchen to garden – and when the eye is drawn down the centre of these three open spaces you can visualise just that. Describing the project as a collaborative process, Carine says of Yoko, “she understood the deal breakers for us as a family – not to mention that we had serious budget limitations. These specifics dictated how the structural designs and building constraints would have to be ingeniously creative to meet our expectations.” Transforming a modestly sized dining room into one that accommodates 12 guests is just one example of how Yoko has made deft use of every inch of the property – originally a tight 1,030 sq ft. Here, the designer has teamed an extendable wooden dining table with a custom-made, built-in bench that not only reaches the full length of the room, adding a cosy, casual seating area, but which doubles as a nifty storage unit, too. Yoko wanted this room to be an indoor version of Carine’s outdoor entertaining space, creating a seamless, year-round experience that doesn’t allow a little bit of rain to spoil the party. In a pleasing symmetry the padded bench, complete with luxurious scatter cushions, mimics its outdoor counterpart, while industrial hanging shelves with trailing house plants sit in front of a dramatic wall of exposed brick, bringing the garden inside. In an arresting mix of materials that echoes Carine’s ‘straight from nature’ culinary ethos, Yoko has used vintage oak, Belgian lime paint, zinc, concrete and brass, and the result is invitingly homely. “I am a massive fan of all things natural and I love to feel texture,” Carine says. “This was something Yoko was able to capture gracefully in the brief.” Born in Cameroon and brought up in France, the chef was also keen to draw on her rich cultural heritage and the attention to detail is to be admired: antique pendant lights were acquired in brocantes in France, while decorative masks and mudcloth cushions were sourced directly from West Africa.

The nature-inspired aesthetic continues throughout the property with an earthy colour palette that offers a calming sense of continuity. Carine’s living room is a sanctuary with its Scandi-inspired furniture, its raw and rustic wooden pieces and its wholly inviting stone grey window seat – installed by Yoko to give her client a peaceful spot in which to relax and unwind after a busy day in the kitchen. Though the house is predominately neutral in tone, there are a few arresting colour pops: the master ensuite boasts beautiful glazed Zellige tiles in mixed, muted hues of green and grey. Handcrafted and perfectly imperfect, the tiles complement a vanity unit crafted from raw wood, further adding to the earthy, textured look. And in Carine’s home office space, a powdery blue-grey paint is used to bring a soothing sense of tranquillity while careful consideration has been given to the position of the desk. Look away from the screen and your eyes are met with a view of the garden’s lush living wall. With spring around the corner, and an end to lockdown in sight, Carine is looking forward to making the most of her modern family home with its convivial, culinary heart. “I feel the look of the house is the image of what I envisioned in my wildest dreams,” she says. “It is the indoor-outdoor kitchen that has won me over – to see my kids run around it. These are priceless moments.” Instagram @inspiringchefs and @mariemingle (yokokloeden.com)

Successful scholars
Happy children make better learners, says Catherine Arslan, Deputy Head, Pastoral at north London’s St. Anthony’s School for Boys. She tells us how the school achieves this
With pupil wellbeing at the heart of everything they do, St. Anthony’s School for Boys is known for the exceptionally high quality of its pastoral care. Everybody at the school firmly believes that happy children are best placed to be successful learners and engaged members of the school community. The first port of call for St. Anthony’s boys or parents when it comes to pastoral matters is usually the form tutor. Working alongside them to ensure closely monitored and tailor-made pastoral care is Head of Pastoral, Catherine Arslan. “At St Anthony’s we take pride in the fact that we know every pupil: our small class sizes and the expertise of our staff ensure that each and every one of our boys is known and valued as an individual,”
says Catherine. “It matters to us very much that our pupils are happy. And resilient and self-aware enough to recognise when they are not, and to ask for help. Our carefully structured pastoral care system, and the dedicated and highly skilled staff with key pastoral responsibilities, mean that pupil wellbeing and welfare is always top of our priority list.” A rewards system celebrates the boys’ achievements and encourages them to continuously strengthen the attitudes, skills and behaviours which underpin their educational achievement and personal development. “We reward hard work, perseverance, initiative, progress in learning, achievement (academic, practical, athletic, creative), good conduct, kindness and consideration of others. Our boys succeed when they persevere in the face of challenges, use their initiative, take responsibility for their own learning and behaviour, help each other to learn, and contribute to the respectful, purposeful and responsible ethos of St. Anthony’s School for Boys,” Catherine explains. A School Council, consisting of pupils from Years 4 and 8, enables boys to experience positions of responsibility and gives them the
opportunity to really contribute to school matters. School Councillors are elected by their class at the beginning of each academic year: candidates are asked to ‘pitch’ to their classmates, giving an account of why they believe they would make a good representative. Two children from each class are elected, a Form Captain and a Vice Captain. The representatives then have the task of gathering views and ideas from their class and presenting them in meetings with the Head Boy team and Deputy Head, Pastoral. “School Council meetings are spirited gatherings full of great ideas, fun and much debate!” reveals Catherine. So far this year, ideas brought to the Headmaster’s office have ranged from the quirky school vending machines to additional table tennis tables and a ‘Capturing Nature’ photography competition. “Certain topics always prompt great discussion: food (something the children have plenty of ideas
about!); clubs (some great ideas are put forward) and charity ideas (it is always pleasing to hear that the children are engaged with the needs of others),” Catherine adds. School Council meetings are minuted and ideas and views are shared with the relevant staff member or department for consideration. Often ideas are added to the agenda for discussion in the weekly Senior Leadership Team meetings. In conclusion, Catherine tells us: “We are passionate about providing our pupils with the academic skills needed for the challenges ahead, but we are equally aware that this needs to be balanced by the raising of emotionally aware, resilient young men, who display the humility, empathy and emotional intelligence which complement academic success.” For admissions enquiries, call 020 7435 3597. HAMPSTEAD GARDEN SUBURB
Back in the early 1900s, philanthropist Henrietta Barnett might have set out to build a utopian community of homes for “all classes of society and standards of income”, but today, the perfectly preserved Arts and Crafts homes here are, understandably, some of the most expensive in the Capital – though many have passed down through generations of the same family PHOTOGRAPHY by EMMANUELLE PERI

COMMENTS
From our agents...
Mark Winship, Benham & Reeves
“Properties range from neat terraces to opulent mansions, but typical homes are detached houses with large gardens. Average house prices in Hampstead Garden Suburb top £1.3 million and can even exceed £23 million for a mega-mansion near Kenwood. The secluded atmosphere and proximity to Hampstead and Highgate not only attracts families, but also famous residents, such as Harry Styles.”
Ian Godfrey, Godfrey & Barr
“Despite the devastation caused by the pandemic, the market has remained buoyant. When we reopened our offices after the first lockdown ended, there was a sudden surge of activity across all price ranges. Buyers were desperate to resume their search for homes, keen to escape small apartments and houses in central London, coupled with a strong desire to find property with outside space.”
Cobi Aboody, Goldschmidt & Howland
“Hampstead Garden Suburb is widely recognised for its charming architecture, set within the open spaces of the Heath Extension. Home to some 13,000 people, the Suburb is a tranquil setting for families with excellent local schools and fashionable shops, cafés and restaurants nearby at Temple Fortune.”

AN ODE TO HGS
Mark Pollack Aston Chase
Aston Chase’s Mark Pollack on what makes the leafy corner of London he calls home so special I moved to Hampstead Garden Suburb from Little Venice shortly after my wife and I married some 30 years ago. I aspired to live here largely due to the close proximity of the green open spaces: the Heath Extension, Hampstead Heath, Kenwood, and Golders Hill Park – not to mention the numerous other open spaces and recreational areas. It’s the perfect place to raise a young family, offering a sense of living in the country, while being less than 20 minutes by car from Baker Street. Most of Hampstead Garden Suburb is a Conservation Area and is effectively governed by The Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust who, like English Heritage, can sometimes thwart property owners’ ambitions, but the legacy is a wonderfully unspoilt area with soft green borders and architecture that’s largely unchanged from Henrietta Barnett’s original vision, namely a model community with beautiful houses in a verdant landscape representing the best of English domestic architecture of the early twentieth century. Genuinely my favourite street in the Suburb is the one I’m fortunate enough to live on, Wildwood Road. It snakes around the Heath Extension with houses directly facing the Heath and others backing onto it – with some houses also benefitting from views over Hampstead Golf Course to the rear. We have a few celebrity neighbours and past residents include Elizabeth Taylor, who publicly stated that the happiest days of her youth were spent running through the woods and on the Heath opposite her home on Wildwood Road. For some, the absence of shops and transport facilities on the south side of Hampstead Garden Suburb is a shortcoming, but I love the fact that it’s largely unspoilt and the recent lockdowns have only highlighted what a privilege it is to live here. I never tire of walking on the Heath Extension – historically with our kids and beloved Miniature Schnauzers, and in more recent times, with my daughter’s French Bulldog. But my favourite location is at the foot of Heathgate, just beyond The Great Wall, from where the Heath Extension rises ahead of you for as far as you can see, and it is so easy to get lost in the beauty of nature and appreciate the views, which have barely changed over the past 125 years or so.

MEET THE LOCALS
Debra Kacher Owner, dk Interiors
Living and working in Hampstead Garden Suburb has major benefits. A quiet conservation area surrounded by beautiful green spaces, it provides fantastic opportunities to experience nature, at the same time as offering wonderful local amenities as well as easy access to those in the centre of town. We’re also close to the north circular and the M25, which is so helpful when it comes to getting to our many clients spread across London and beyond! Being an interior designer, no two days are the same. Depending on the demands and status of each project, we can be on site one day, designing in the studio the next, sourcing materials or meeting clients after that… I normally start the day with a little exercise, either at Pilates by the Green, based in the Market Place, or walking my beloved dog on the Heath Extension, or at Bigwood, Kenwood or on Hampstead Heath itself. It’s a good opportunity for some quiet time to gather my thoughts, plan the week ahead or just mull over current projects, envisaging our design direction and finding inspiration. We are so lucky to be surrounded by such beautiful natural green spaces all maintained to the highest standards. The Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust’s objective is to maintain and preserve the architecture and character of the area, so we often need to consult with them on planning applications. We have a huge appreciation for the local architecture and draw a great deal of inspiration from the surroundings we live and work in. Errands get fitted in before work starts or at the end of the day, whether that’s dropping off the dry cleaning at Jacksons in Temple Fortune or food shopping at Waitrose and M&S.
Say what?
Your home, your life
We’re really lucky to have shops like BEKEM’S for specialty food items, Sherrads for delicious baked treats and Amber Rose for flowers. Supporting local businesses, especially small independent ones, is vital. I’m also a regular at the local post office in the Market Place on Lyttelton Road. I pop in regularly to send out samples to clients and suppliers and the friendly service there is so welcome. But one of my most frequented local businesses has to be Medivet, which is also in the Market Place – our dog is their best customer! Sourcing for our projects can take us all over London and beyond, so my Mini is like a second office and maintenance is key – I’m a frequent customer at Grays Tyres in Temple Fortune. Some of our most tried, tested and talented suppliers are right on our doorstep, though. Our directory includes Parquet Flooring in Temple Fortune, which supplies a huge range of wood flooring finishes and colours. We also have a great relationship with the guys at Topps Tiles, for whom nothing is ever too much trouble. My background was in fashion before a career change 15 years ago led me to interior design, and clothes are still high on my priority list, so a detour to Paulie and Genevieve in Temple Fortune counts as major retail therapy! I spend most of the day with clients or the team at meetings, site meetings on the various projects, sourcing for existing and new projects or tied to my desk with admin. All of which means going out for lunch is a rare occurrence, but when I get the opportunity, I do love sushi from Atari-Ya, and Totally Espresso or Piacere do great salads. I switch off after work over a local dinner and drinks with friends at The Coffee Cup in Hampstead, which is a very old favourite and just a stone’s throw from the Suburb. I’m also a fan of The Bull and Bush pub and The Everyman Cinema. dkinteriors.uk.com
Back in the early days of the Suburb, it wasn’t unusual to spot elephants grazing on the land just off Denham Drive, which now contains Big and Little Wood. Circus proprietor George Sanger owned the land and used it for housing his animals over the winter.

BEKEM’S Food Store, NW11
The very definition of a local convenience store, BEKEM’S is handily located on Market Place and offers quality and widely sourced foodstuffs, including kosher and vegan, organic and gluten free. It’s also a one-stop shop for toiletries and household necessities. “This mini supermarket is a treasure trove of goodies,” says Vivienne Harris from Heathgate. “From the usual food and homewares, to a great variety of fruit and veg that’s not often seen in the smaller shops... I think they stock everything one could need and they’re a pleasure to shop from.”

Sherrards, NW11
If you’re looking for a sweet treat, this family run bakery and café more than satisfies. Dating back to 1952, Sherrards is a much-loved establishment that offers an array of handmade cakes, biscuits and pretty pastries. “Sherrards is one of the reasons why Hampstead Garden Suburb is so popular,” says Chris Cooper from Dexters. “It’s a great place to pick up a coffee and a slice of cake, and it’s perfect for a weekend treat.” And while the colourful patisserie counter is guaranteed to make your mouth water, there’s a full menu of delicious savoury lunch offerings to be had, too.
Daniels Bakery, NW11
Serving up some of the best bagels in north west London is this traditional kosher bakery on Hallswelle Parade near Golders Green. Litchfields’ Charles Bobroff is a fan, telling us that Daniels has “a wide variety of the freshest bakery items, from homemade breads to rolls, pastries and cakes.” While the delicious smell of baked goods is likely the thing that draws you in, there’s freshly cooked traditional dishes, quiches, salads and much more to tempt your tastebuds, too. Why not treat yourself to a slap-up takeaway lunch?

PHGH Doctors, NW11
Glentree’s Trevor Abrahmsohn nominates GP partners Dr Leora Harverd and Dr Karen Grossmark as his local heroes, wishing to “shine a beacon on the excellent work they are doing for the community, as the unsung heroes of the day.” When the doctors signed the contract to become the First Vaccination Covid Hub in Barnet they were filled with a sense of commitment and excitement. They collaborated with Drs Sherry Taylor and Luisa Pettigrew and within a matter of days, got the show off the ground. There was so much to plan in so little time. “It’s like organising a wedding for 1,000 guests, week in week out, for nine months – but without the canapés!” says Dr Harverd. “But we are blessed with the most committed team of volunteers to help navigate the flow of people and retired GPs and dentists along with Hatzola, the paramedics who are vaccinating hundreds each shift. There is such an upbeat atmosphere during the 12 hour shift that it takes to vaccinate 1,200 people. Patients are so grateful, as receiving their first vaccine has given them hope to think about getting back to some sort of normality.” 23 Temple Fortune Lane, NW11 (020 8209 2400; phgh.co.uk)

A new era in education
In today’s uncertain landscape, online schooling offers stability and security for pupils, especially for those preparing to sit crucial exams
W
hile schools were forced to move their teaching online in 2020, for some educators, the decision to do this has been made consciously, with the acknowledgement that this style of learning has its benefits. Online schooling can reach pupils wherever they are and give them the flexibility to fit learning around their lives. Personalising learning to individuals is incredibly powerful too – pupils can be stretched where possible and supported when required. Pupils
at a well-designed online school can thrive academically while developing the skills and mindset to become better independent learners. And the sector is expected to continue growing as more pupils discover the benefits and flexibility of online learning. Introducing Harrow School Online One new school choosing this style of education is Harrow School Online. The first of its kind, it is a fully online sixth form offering a world leading independent British education. It brings together the heritage of a Harrow School
education with leading online learning technology and teaching practices. Careful design has gone in to how to make the most of the online delivery, and the school opened its virtual doors to the first cohort of A-level pupils in September 2020. Online education done well can be as effective as classroom-based teaching. Every environment has its advantages, and virtual schooling should be organised to make the most of its innate strengths. Flipping the classroom Online teaching works particularly effectively with a ‘flipped classroom’ teaching methodology, something pupils can expect from Harrow School Online. This involves pupils working through interactive self-study materials to develop an understanding of subject content, and then having targeted lessons in a virtual classroom where teachers explore their understanding of that
material. Class sizes are small – a maximum of ten pupils – so teachers get to know their pupils well. Lessons are interactive and teachers use tools like polling, interactive whiteboards, and break out rooms where pupils work with their peers. Providing pastoral care When staff and pupils are physically distant from one another, pastoral care is especially important. Harrow School Online ensures that all pupils are safe and happy through regular meetings with a Success Coach, and a house system forms the backbone of the school community, providing an opportunity for peer support. The school’s Success Coach, Dale Krause, has 20 years’ experience of supporting high-achieving pupils and co-ordinating support for pupils who require additional assistance. “From day one I coach pupils on university selection and provide tailored career planning,”
he explains. “In one-to-one coaching sessions and small group workshops I provide students with guidance on how to become effective independent learners.” Principal Heather Rhodes (above) adds: “Harrow School Online offers a unique opportunity for bright girls and boys to develop their shared love of learning in a carefully designed, globally connected school. The school is setting out to revolutionise education. We’d love you to join us.” Harrow School Online runs virtual events throughout the school year for prospective families to access the information and resources they need in order to make an informed decision about applying to the school. Schools WORDS by ALI HOWARD
THE HEAD
Donal Brenan
St. Anthony’s School for Girls How would you sum up St. Anthony’s? An ambitious school. What’s your educational ethos? The school is proud of its mindful approach to educating the girls within a happy, healthy and academically challenging environment.
THOUGHT
The virtual classroom While lockdown has unquestionably had an effect on our children – and in ways we’re yet to fully uncover – it has provided a taster for online learning, something many see as the future of education. So what are some of the benefits of a virtual classroom? For learners aged 16 and up, the flexibility of online study is a major plus point. In giving students the freedom to set their own study routines we’re also handing them a very grown-up slice of responsibility – along with an invaluable life skill. When it comes to that first graduate job application, those who’ve studied remotely can confidently tick the “self-starter” box, for example. Without the confines of geography, online learners are able to study alongside, and interact with, peers from anywhere in the world. By expanding their horizons, albeit virtually, we can equip students with a global outlook and the communication skills needed for the international world of work. Online study can provide a relaxed approach to learning that will appeal to our tech-loving teens. In breaking down the formality of the classroom, pupils are able to work at their own pace, pausing videos to
take notes when needed, or skipping through the topics they’re fully au fait with while concentrating on more challenging ones. Pupils at Harrow School Online, a new, fully online sixth form school, have embraced the virtual classroom. Alongside a bespoke syllabus of A Levels, they’re also offered the school’s Super-Curriculum programme, which explores areas of scholarship above and beyond their A Level courses – as well as a rich timetable of extra-curricular activities from Musical Ensemble to Science Society to Film Club. A typical day might see a rigorous morning of Physics and Number Theory, followed by an afternoon of Chess Club and Music Ensemble. “I would never have been able to do it if it wasn’t online,” says pupil Chalya Rodrigo. “This is just like the next stage in education.” For Muhammed Berikuly, online learning hits the just right balance: “It’s comfortable and easy to learn, while also challenging you at the same time,” he says. While Jasmine Velani enthuses that enrolling at Harrow School Online was “Probably the best thing I ever did, honestly.” harrowschoolonline.org

How would you describe the atmosphere? A respectful, peaceful place that inspires and motivates children to explore and develop to their fullest capacity, where individual temperament, learning style, strengths and areas for development are all valued, igniting the thirst for learning in all the children. Teachers bring a calm, caring presence to their bright airy classrooms; through repeated encounters with mindful teachers, the children learn to trust the value of their insights and opinions. They grow in courage and confidence, able to verbalise complex thoughts and feelings when they are met with an attitude of respect and interest. How do you look after the wellbeing of your pupils? On the doorstep of Golders Hill Park, St. Anthony’s understands the benefits of the natural world. Wellbeing Wednesdays is an initiative inspired by deputy head Raffaella Merolla; it’s an opportunity for the school community to take part in walks through Golders Hill Park and it aligns directly with the spiritual and moral vision for the school – to nurture a curious mind we must nurture our body and soul. Which extra-curricular activities are on offer? A comprehensive extra-curricular programme is provided. Activities include cross country running, football, dodgeball, rhythmic gymnastics, and fitness. Debating, philosophy, Magic Maths, reading club and science club are also popular. Our clubs with a community focus include environmental club, Mini Vinnies and our School Council. Drama, Irish dancing and singing complete the schedule. 13 % – the
average drop in rents in prime Central London
Market insight from our agents ADVICE
Prime time According to the latest research from Knight Frank, the prime Central London rental market is enjoying a flurry – despite headlines of a rural exodus in response to the pandemic. This is largely thanks to average rental prices in these hot spots reaching their lowest levels in a decade. Indeed, average rents fell by 13 per cent in prime Central London in the year to January, taking them back to levels last seen at the end of 2009. As a result, these relatively affordable lets are drawing some property seekers back into the big smoke. “There has always been a group of people living on the periphery of central London who couldn’t afford to go in any further,” says David Mumby, head of prime Central London lettings at Knight Frank. “That has changed and we’re seeing movement from areas including Wandsworth and as far away as Croydon into Chelsea and South Kensington...” Proof that when the property gods close a door, they open a window.
Finished to the highest standard, this characterful two-bed apartment offers loft-style living in the heart of Fitzrovia. £923 pw, Knight Frank (020 3435 6446; knightfrank.co.uk)

Heathgate Years in the business? More than I care to remember, but 40+ spring to mind! I love London… for its vibrancy, multinational atmosphere and exciting energy. Specifically, I love working in Hampstead. I could wax lyrical forever. It’s the best place ever. First London home? A small cottage style house in Hampstead Garden Suburb, which I bought unmodernised. It took me ages to get it into good order, but once completed it really
was a home I was super proud of. I absolutely loved that house. Favourite London Street? Carnaby Street as it’s part of my (groovy) youth culture and is still a lovely small pedestrianised street with independent and interesting shops. Favourite haunts? For shopping, I’m a big fan of Selfridges as they have everything in one place and it’s easy for me to get there. As for a favourite restaurant, my local Turkish place, Baran in Temple
Fortune, where I’ve been going for the past 20 years. The staff are so wonderful, the food is great and it’s like home to me. For green space it has to be Golders Hill Park with its children’s zoo and butterfly house, plus it leads directly onto Hampstead Heath, which is great if I’m looking for a more taxing walk. But the real reason (don’t tell anyone) is that just outside the entrance is an ice cream van.
environment with lakes, manicured gardens, heathland terrain and the wonderful Kenwood House for a snack and tea after a bracing walk?
Take one person, dead, alive or fictional, out in London – who and where? I would take the Queen (she would have to be incognito) to my local restaurant so she could have an evening away from being Queen and enjoy a quiet meal Where do you and a good chat. go for head On the flip side I space in the city? could have a peep Kenwood and around the palace. Hampstead Heath. Who knows, Where better than maybe she’s this gorgeous rural thinking of selling?

How has the stamp duty holiday impacted your business and what are your market predictions for when it’s over? “It has worked wonders for the economy as the spin off from the housing market helps everyone – buyers, sellers, builders, decorators and of course, the Treasury. It has provided a fillip to those upgrading to bigger properties and a real boost to those on the early steps of the property ladder. While the current Stamp Duty holiday is planned to end in March, we do not expect this to impact on the market greatly as springtime is the start of the busiest time of the year for home movers. Also, at the higher levels of the market the amounts being saved are minimal when compared to the 12 to 15 per cent rates payable over £1.5 million.” Mark Sumray, Dexters fabricmagazine.co.uk
