The definitive guide to London living Editor’s letter Liz Skone James If the last year has taught me anything, it’s to set my expectations low in order to avoid disappointment! That said, I’m feeling fairly positive about the prospect of the further easing of restrictions this month. With the promise of picnics with friends, small beer garden gatherings, a much-needed return to the gym, and, of course, the long awaited hair appointment (hallelujah!), it feels like life is slowly returning to normal. This issue is a celebration of all that, and more – we’ve even got real-life exhibitions to talk about on our culture pages, and our travel section explores local-ish options for adventuring. Of course, things don’t always go to plan, so should you find yourself at home for a little longer, you’ll be pleased to see all of the usual interiorsfocused content, designed to help you make the most of your four walls. On that front, with cinemas not due to open until at least next month, we’ve put together a guide to creating the ultimate media room. First on the watch list for that at-home big screen and sound system should be cover star Royce Pierreson’s latest project, a darkly thrilling take on the world of Sherlock Holmes – read all about it in our interview. Until next month, stay safe.

ART
Royal Society of British Artists Annual Exhibition 15-24 April, Mall Galleries
Making a joyous return to the physical art scene is this annual group show, which promises a riot of colour and form. Visitors can expect to see a diverse collection of over 400 works with some reflecting on our experiences of the past year – whether that’s in a moving or a humorous way. Excitingly, artworks from the society’s open call will sit alongside those of its members, namely some of the UK’s top painters, sculptors and printmakers. The exhibition provides an opportunity for green and seasoned collectors alike to browse and buy, but for those of us still shielding, there’s a virtual tour on offer, too, which will give us a glimpse around the gallery from our armchairs. CULTURE EXHIBITION
Sneakers Unboxed: Studio to Street
From 18 May, book now, Design Museum In the world of art and design it’s not often we’re invited to look down for inspiration, but this exhibition asks us to do just that. The Secret Life of the Modern House By Dominic Bradbury
The last year has seen our homes adapt to incredible changes in the way we live. Home offices have come to the fore, we’ve upped the cosy in many areas, creating a safe sanctuary for our families, and we’ve gone big on home entertainment with unapologetic escapism a common theme. But history tells us that properties have always responded to our changing lifestyles, global pandemic or not. In a timely publication, design and architecture writer Bradbury takes us on a tour of over 90 houses from the last 150 years, to show us just how dramatic these changes have been. From the Victorian ideal of reception rooms, a dining room and a back-of-house space, to our modern day obsession with open plan living and a fluid approach to inside-outside space… you won’t look at your four walls in the same way again.
While we’re still craving real life conversations with friends, particularly those of the wonderfully discursive pub variety, our love of conversational podcasts continues. Anthony Collias and Jacob Wedderburn-Day (AKA Ant and Jake) are friends and business partners who’ve gone from sharing a dorm at Oxford to the heady heights of Forbes’ 30 Under 30 British entrepreneurs. Here, the former roommates share their lunch hour discussions and explore the hottest topics of the day – all with a philosophical spin. Are premiership footballers overpaid? Should billionaires exist? Are you really a bad person if you work for Facebook? Funny and fascinating in equal measure. podcasts.apple.com

Talking Gods Premieres 5-9 April
This is an innovative digital festival that takes five classic Greek tales and reimagines them for today. With a focus on contemporary themes such as climate change, mental health, artificial intelligence and gender identity, the award-winning Arrows & Traps theatre company, who are not short of industry accolades, presents Persephone, Orpheus, Pygmalion, Aphrodite and Icarus. One play will premiere each night of the Monday to Friday programme and

will be followed by a live Q&A session on Zoom. Writer Ross McGregor says, “We thought it would be an interesting time to look back to where drama first began – with the Greek myths. We have reimagined them so that they’re not just a testament to where we came from, but a look to where we’re going.” Unmissable drama for our strange times. For tickets, visit arrowsandtraps.com

INTERVIEW
In highly anticipated new show The Irregulars, Netflix revisits the stories of Sherlock Holmes, but fans are in for a surprise, because this series depicts a very different world to that which we’ve seen in previous adaptations. The focus is the Baker Street Irregulars, a group of street kids who featured in three of Conan Doyle’s novels, employed by the detective to help him source information he couldn’t access himself. Royce Pierreson, who plays John Watson, tells me, “It’s a kind of flipped version of Sherlock Holmes. Based in his world, but focusing on this group of street kids who are working for him… It has this brilliant energy to it, and it is totally different to any Sherlock you may have read, or seen, or listened to.” In his adaptation, creator Tom Bidwell reimagines the young gang of boys from the books as a group of teens who must race against time to stop a supernatural darkness from descending on London. “I think it will catch people off guard,” Royce says. “Old fans, even those who don’t really know the universe at all, will maybe have a perception of it, but they are going to be really surprised. It is genuinely dark – I couldn’t sleep after filming one of the episodes,” he laughs. “Tom balances it all so well though. It is very dark, really scary, but it is also funny
and energetic – it has this brilliant energy to it. I think it is a really good mix. I’m excited for people to see it.” It was a part Royce just couldn’t say no to, he explains. “I have always wanted to play John Watson, I know that sounds convenient, but it’s true. My mum has all of the Penguin Classics, so I have been reading them for a long time, and I love the world. And I love Conan Doyle’s writing – I think it is the most brilliant storytelling there is. So, when I got the audition, it was a shock for a long time.” Perhaps unsurprisingly, Royce plays a very different Watson to the modest, patient and sensitive observer who we know so well. “I wanted to do him my way,” he reveals. “He is a voice of reason, he is the dogsbody, he is the sidekick… I wanted to flip it on its head. I think there is a real darkness to him, as you will see as the series goes on. I don’t want to give too much away, but there is much to unravel. I wanted to create this version of Watson who is haggard and tired. I spoke to the make-up artist and I said: ‘You have to make this a real, real character: dark and mysterious.’ So, we made him kind of sallow and wrinkled and old before his time. He is a very troubled man, with a lot of secrets, and I really wanted to bring that out.”

The series, which began streaming at the end of March, has been a long time coming. Filming was due to wrap around this time last year, but with only weeks left on the schedule, everything ground to a halt when the country was thrown into the first lockdown. “We were so close, we were so, so close to wrapping,” Royce recalls. “I think we were about two weeks away from that, and then everything shut down. So, we had six months away from it, and started working again in the summer.” “The end of it was the accumulation of all of the hard work that we had done – we were emerging in this new reality to finish the show. So, there is a lot of emotion in that last bit, for many reasons,” Royce tells me. “It was a surreal way to work, but I am super proud of everybody, because of what we got done with all of the regulations we had to work under, and having to be away from family, and all of these things happening… you see the results, you see how much energy people brought to those last few weeks and it is a real testament to everybody that we got it in the bag. It was really tough, I am not going to lie. For me it wasn’t a nice way to work, in that weird reality. But coming back, and seeing everybody was great, and we got through it and the results are amazing, and I am really excited to share it,” he smiles.
As difficult as it is, this new way of working is something that Royce has had to get used to. Filming was supposed to start in spring last year on the second series of The Witcher, the Netflix fantasy series based on the books of Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski in which Royce plays sorcerer Istredd. “I would’ve had about five days break between finishing The Irregulars and starting on that,” he recalls. Actually, filming only started towards the end of last year, and is ongoing. “It is another amazing achievement in the middle of all of this,” Royce tells me. “Netflix have been unbelievable; just to see the precautions and the safety that they have put in place for everybody day to day. So, I feel very lucky to get to work there. It is all happening because of their hard work. It is easy to take for granted. You know, you come in and you get tested three times a week. And you realise that that is not the reality for a lot of people. That you are lucky to be able to do your job without any worries. It has been an amazingly weird but brilliant year in terms of work.” Alongside these jobs, Royce has been busy with some more personal projects. “I run a production company called Another Method Productions, and we have just signed a really exciting deal,” he tells me, enthusiastically. “I can’t talk about it much right now, but we have a plan to make a TV series that I think is going to
be a real game changer. It explores issues of race. It is really exciting and we’re in the pre-production stages of that right now. And I am doing a lot of writing as well. I have just produced my first short film, with Georgina Campbell, who I worked with on Murdered by my Boyfriend. It’s a two hander, with me and her, written by my sister actually, Tyler Pierreson – she is a wonderful creator and writer. It was shot in a day and a half and it is some of the best work. It looks fantastic. That is wrapped up. And I have a few other projects on the go, so I am very busy with all of that. It is fantastic.” Having worked in the industry for the past 10 years, Royce’s is a familiar face. The actor is probably most recognisable for having played Reece in the BAFTA award-winning BBC 3 drama Murdered by my Boyfriend, and Jamie Desford in the fourth season of Line of Duty. Recalling how he came to acting, he tells me: “I remember watching A Streetcar Named Desire when I was about 15, and I didn’t know anything about the industry, or who Brando was and the impact he had had. After an hour and a half watching it, I was just like, ‘I want to be Marlon Brando – let me do that!’,” he laughs. “I started reading Shakespeare and just fell in love with texts, and I guess, internally performing,” he explains. “You hear actors say they are actually very shy and reserved, and I

think it is true for a lot of us, definitely me. I used to have massive stage fright. In my head I always knew that I could act, if the circumstances were right. So, I had to teach myself to be okay with feeling uncomfortable, to being exposed, and, you know, fucking up. I realised I could give myself a choice. I could be like, okay, I’ve tried it, and there is absolutely no way I want that feeling again, or yeah, I can live with that and I can use that feeling to become a better actor. So, I kept coming back to it, and I gained a lot of confidence through doing that. Luckily, I got into drama school first time. And I set my sights on signing with an agency and moved to London.” Royce is proud of the work he has done since those early days. “I look at my CV, and I think these are people that I wanted to work with and characters I wanted to play at that time. And it is a really lovely thing to see that thought process through your CV,” he tells me. “Everything that I have on there is absolutely what I wanted to do; there is never going to be anything on my CV that I look at and go, ‘ah somebody told me to do that, and I didn’t want to’ – these are my decisions.” “So much of being an actor is being able to say yes and no. And the more your profile builds, the more you can say yes or no to. Financially, as well, it becomes easier to say no,” he explains. “Even when you first start as actor, you can still do that, but so many actors give that away, saying, ‘I’ll do anything, I’ll do anything’.
And then you build your reputation on that, and you get to a certain level, and realise that you have given up that yes and no. So, for me, I hold on to that, absolutely. I love my CV and I love the progression.” Being proud of his choices doesn’t mean that he believes he has played every role perfectly, though. “Some of them work, some of them don’t work, bits of some work…” he admits. But however he feels about the outcome, Royce says that he makes a point of watching everything. “By watching yourself, you get to see your progression, which is an amazing thing. You know, from first job to twentieth job, you can see how you’ve developed, and you look at what worked and what didn’t work. You see what you don’t think is truthful right now, or what you really believe in. It’s my work, you know what I mean? I feel like, whatever decision I made on the day of filming, was exactly the decision I wanted to make at that point. That is exactly what I was feeling on that day, so that is exactly what I put into the character. Whatever comes out, comes out – that’s the truth. I feel like, if you don’t watch yourself, it is like if you cook a meal and you do not try it – you go, ‘no, I don’t taste my food, I don’t like it’. You would never do that, you know!” On the subject of cooking, Royce tells me that he briefly considered being a chef, before pursuing his career in acting. “I always wanted
41
to do something where you are creating something from different components – I have always been drawn to things like that. I still enjoy cooking, but it’s usually very obscure stuff. I do it by taste. So, when I cook for my fiancée, she is very wary, because I put in so much stuff. And I’m like, ‘please, just try it, I swear to you it tastes good!’ And most of it does taste good, but there is a certain per cent that you really don’t want to go there!” he laughs. It sounds like he made the right decision – I’ll take his word on the food. The Irregulars is available to stream now on Netflix

STYLE&WELLBEING These are slightly more expensive than their metal equivalent, but being tooth-coloured makes them far more discreet – dentistry so good you hardly know it’s there. Clients at elleven see experts specialised in different areas of dentistry at each step, rather than generalised practitioners, so my next appointment was with Dr Shivani Patel, elleven Dental’s multi-award-winning orthodontic consulant, who would fit and adjust my braces in the many months to come. Her friendly, passionate and attentive approach put me instantly at ease from the moment I walked into her room – an important thing to consider when you will be seeing this person every 4-6 weeks over the next 1-2 years (treatment times vary depending on case). The expert fitting was pain free, but the first couple of weeks with my new brace still took a lot of getting used to. My teeth felt tender and foods that I had eaten for years suddenly became off limits in order not to discolour or break my brace. The good news is this struggle was just temporary and, after an initial two weeks, I hardly experienced any discomfort, except for the couple of days after every adjustment, which is to be expected. I started seeing promising results after just a couple of months, and after the full 14 months (most of this spent at home due to COVID-19) Dr Shivani declared my smile complete. The results are incredible. A few months on, I’ve never been happier, and the whole experience has been truly transformative. I’m confident in my smile, knowing that it’s not only wide, straight and healthy, but that it’s also insured for life – the best investment I’ve ever made. PC

ECO BEAUTY
The grass is always greener
We’re big fans of Evolve’s small-batch natural skincare products, which are made right here in the UK, and with brand new, more sustainable packaging, the brand’s already glowing ecocredentials are set to get even better this month, just in time for Earth Day. The existing FSC certified and 100 per cent recyclable cardboard
45
boxes were already pretty environmentally sound, but the new Grass Paper boxes take things to a whole new level. Created using 40 per cent natural grass fibres, they are significantly more sustainable to produce – using 99.9 per cent less water compared to traditional wood pulp, and 97 per cent less energy, they also generate
75 per cent less CO2 emissions. Not just good for the planet, they look gorgeous, too, and have a subtle scent of fresh cut grass. Founder, Laura Rudoe tells us, “I’m so excited to be one of the first beauty brands to use Grass Paper packaging, which is much kinder to our planet.” evolvebeauty.co.uk

STYLE&WELLBEING FITNESS
Up close and personal If you’ve been taking things easy over lockdown, the thought of getting back to regular exercise might be daunting. With gyms reopening this month, we asked Haydn Elliott, head trainer and co-owner of F45 Oxford Circus and F45 Soho for his advice on re-finding your feet with fitness. Here are his top tips:
you must focus on getting good quality sleep, at least 7-9 hours a night. As mentioned, your body is going to really feel the effects of this increased intensity, so you need to give yourself time to recover. As well as sleep, you must ensure that you are properly hydrating, with several litres of water throughout the day, and nourishing your body with an adequate protein intake.
Up your movement – It is important to start getting up and about again and be a bit more active. People have been a lot more sedentary for longer periods of time than they would have usually. Yes, a short 20-25 minute workout is good, but I think right now it’s more about getting the body moving more frequently than adding in long sessions of intense training. Choose walking, mobility, stretching or anything else that will help your body ease away from the fairly restricted movement patterns we have been accustomed to for months. Ease yourself into your workout – It is important to remember that we’ve spent the past 3-4 months in lockdown, so we would advise initially holding off from giving your workouts the full 100 per cent, particularly in the first week, as your body is going to really feel it. Focus on recovery – Be conscious of your recovery during this initial period. It’s something that is always extremely important, but when coming back to more intense training structure
I would give exactly the same advice to people who have never worked out before. Right now, people have been fairly inactive for the past 3-4 months, so it is like everyone is starting their own journey again. Now is the time to leave your pride at the door and try to enjoy the process rather than getting too focused on aesthetics. Food &drink
Feast your eyes on this month’s finest
ON TRIAL
Bring home the bacon Though I’m longing to get back to the office for many reasons, one thing I am going to miss about homeworking life is the time it’s given me to indulge in a leisurely weekday breakfast. Gone are the days of a hastily inhaled croissant on the 07.26, now you’ll find me starting the day over a civilised spread, with plenty of time to linger over a coffee and the morning headlines. And I’m taking every opportunity to enjoy this new luxury before it gets rudely usurped by the return of the morning commute. In search of the ultimate breakfast, I’ve recently discovered Le Swine’s DIY bacon butty boxes – and they’re so good that thank goodness I didn’t find them any earlier in the pandemic (there’s a danger I would’ve needed a whole new work wardrobe if I had). The Butty Box is a one-of-a-kind make-it-at-home kit contain everything you need to rustle up a killer sarnie: bacon sourced from a small, passionate, family-run butcher (100 per cent British and outdoor reared, each pig is hand-selected for its middle bacon, combining the streaky and back sections for ultimate bacon goodness); lightly toasted milk and caramelised onion buns; bacon butter and Le Swine’s insanely good homemade chipotle and mushroom ketchups. For the ultimate weekend upgrade, the brunch boxes contain Le Swine’s signature recipe Virgin Mary mix, simply add a splash of vodka for even more punch. Guaranteed to get the day off to a great start. LSJ From £14 for The Butty Box for 2. To order, see leswine.co.uk
FINE WINE
On the house While we miss meals out, we love that the events of the past year have encouraged restaurateurs to get creative with their offering. Take Highbury’s neighbourhood restaurant and wine shop, Top Cuvée, which took its natural wine offering online with Shop Cuvée during the first lockdown. The demand was so huge that within a matter of weeks, delivery was being offered nationwide, and by the beginning of 2021 the team had sold enough bottles of natural wine to fill 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools!
With the Top Cuvée dining room out of action for a little longer, the team have just launched House Wine – working with their favourite makers to select wines that are at their peak seasonally. Co-owner Brodie Meah says, ‘we’ve been looking to implement this idea since we opened the restaurant in 2019. People were always asking if they could get bottles of our house wine to take away… we saw now as the perfect time to do it!’ Wines are purchased in kegs, straight from the producer, and then
49
bottled and labelled in-house to keep environmental impacts low. Locals can return their empties for money off their next purchase – not only encouraging reusing over recycling, but also providing an opportunity to discover more of the wonderful wines on rotation. The selection will change regularly, with a focus on low intervention, sustainable wines, with good vibes guaranteed. Prices vary. With the news that we’ll be able to meet with friends and family outdoors this month, we’ve been researching posh picnics – we might not be able to get back to our favourite restaurants just yet, but that doesn’t mean we can’t socialise in style. Take the latest offering from Bocca di Lupo: delivered to doorsteps across London in time for lunch, the new picnic feasts include all of the essential ingredients for a truly special al fresco Italian experience. The feasts arrive chilled, ready to grab and take to the nearest park, stuffed with a generous selection of classic Italian snacks and plates. Food is inspired by founder Jacob Kenedy’s travels in the country, think wafer-thin Pane Carasau (Sardinian flatbreads) served with a pecorino cream for dipping; freshly sliced prosciutto di San Daniele; grilled aubergines marinated with roast tomatoes, chilli and mint; and, for the sweet toothed, Bocca di Lupo’s house-made marbled ricotta and chocolate cake. A bottle of Gelupo’s very own Prosecco, mineral water, and eco-friendly cutlery, glasses and napkins complete the offering. Jacob says: “There is no better way to enjoy one another’s company than over plates of good food and with good wine. We hope to give you the chance to have both, and so created the perfect Italian picnic for you to enjoy outside. The only thing we can’t guarantee is the weather!” We’re so excited about seeing loved ones again, we’re even willing to overlook an April shower. Priced at £86, including delivery, Bocca di Lupo At Home’s picnic feast is available to order online (boccadilupoathome.com)
What do you cook on your days off? Normally I don’t cook at home, unless my family requests a special dish that they find difficult to make for themselves! What’s the best meal you’ve ever eaten? In Japan, at Ginza Kojyu where the grilled freshwater eel was outstanding. In London, I loved The Clove Club – their menu is similar in style to Kaiseki, a traditional multicourse Japanese dinner. CULTURAL BREAKS
Sent to Coventry
allows families to try a new country pursuit such as archery and clay pigeon shooting, explore the estate on borrowed bikes, enjoy a woodland walk and get competitive on the croquet lawns and tennis courts. Guests can also order picnic hampers filled with seasonal gourmet fare to be enjoyed within the grounds, indulge in al fresco cream teas and barbecues, or tuck into delicious meals from The Brasserie, which will be open for outside dining. And if that all sounds like too much for a single day, why not take a look at the hotel’s luxurious self-catering cottages, which will be reopening this month.
With New York out of reach for the time being, and Devon booked up until 2022, we’ve been scrabbling for short break options. A search that has led to Coventry… It might not offer rural views or coastal air, and it isn’t the usual mini break choice, but as UK City of Culture 2021, this diverse city does have lots to offer. And there’s a programme of events planned to show it off to the full – all organised to allow for any guidelines that may be in place at the time. From storytelling to music, and activism to theatrical arts, there’s something for everyone. The perfect base for exploring comes in the form of the Telegraph Hotel, due to open imminently. The iconic Telegraph building was home to the city’s newspaper for more than 50 years. It has been given a luxurious makeover that celebrates the cool mid-century style of the building. All of the 88 uniquely styled bedrooms are stunning, but we’re eyeing up the Lord Iliffe Suite (named after the founder of the newspaper), which includes its own hot tub and terrace.
Days out are available Wed–Sun from 12 April to 16 May, priced from £170 pp. For further information, see lucknampark.co.uk/explore/whats-on/

RURAL PURSUITS
Escape to the country Much as we love our corner of the Capital, we’re now longing for a change of scenery. The current stay at home advice has felt interminable, but all being well, we’ll finally be able to exercise that wanderlust this month. While overnight accommodation in hotels isn’t scheduled to reopen just yet, the clever folk at Lucknam Park have designed a series of restorative day packages that make the most of the hotel’s 500-acre Wiltshire estate. Set in Colerne, just outside Chippenham, it’s far enough away from home to feel like an escape, but still manageable for a special outing. And there’s something to appeal to the whole family, from Saddle & Spa, which includes a one-hour hack through the estate, a two-course lunch and decompression time in the spa, to the Sunday Family Day Out, that
STAYCATION
Home from home
We’re looking forward to catching up with friends and family after long months apart, but while overnight stays are still off the cards, catching up with far flung loved ones is tricky. With selfcatering accommodation due to open this month, we’re planning to put our loved ones up close by, facilitating day trips and al fresco meals right here in London. Of course, only the best will do, and that’s where Domus Stay comes in. A brand-new, short-term rental brand, it offers access to some of London’s most extraordinary homes. With chic, design-led properties located in the most vibrant neighbourhoods, Domus presents the ultimate, envy-

Guests also benefit from having a personal assistant on call 24-hours a day, dedicated to fulfilling every request – whether that be providing business and travel assistance, organising cultural experiences or simply assisting with housekeeping. With a background in luxury hotels, we think the team are on to a winning formula. We’re even tempted to book a few nights for ourselves – a way to rediscover our city and escape these four walls. domusstay.com

THAT’S ENTERTAI WHETHER YOU HAVE DESIGNS ON A DEDICATED MEDIA ROOM OR A FLEXIBLE HOME CINEMA SET-UP IN THE LOUNGE, MAKE SURE IT’S OSCAR-WORTHY
A
WORDS by ALI HOWARD
home cinema has always been a desirable commodity but the pandemic has pushed the concept from luxury into the realms of necessity. Our lockdown weeks have been punctuated with at-home movie nights complete with drinks and popcorn, and in an otherwise stark social calendar, they’ve proved a sanity-saver. It’s little wonder, then, that media rooms are having a moment – and according to those in the know, from interior design to tech, they’re here to stay. “Home cinema rooms are incredibly popular at the moment – we’re all looking for some escapism,” says Helen Westlake, creative director at Marylebone-based architecture and interiors studio, Millier. “A dedicated entertainment room for movies and games, fully kitted out with sumptuous furnishings, low lighting and seamlessly integrated technology and acoustics offers a cocoon from the world. They’re also a truly flexible space for multi-generational family living and entertainment, which I think adds to their enduring desirability.” millierlondon.com
Your home, your life
Space is naturally a concern if you’re looking to incorporate a big screen into your home, but you don’t necessarily need a spare room to achieve a cinematic experience. The beauty of a home cinema set-up is that it can be as simple, or as elaborate, as your floorplan dictates. Just as we’ve turned our bedroom into a home gym and flipped our kitchen into a classroom over the past year, our living space can transform into a makeshift movie theatre in an instant with the addition of a projector, a pull down screen and a few cosy beanbags to sink ourselves into – cocktail in hand. BenQ have recently launched two UHD ultra-short throw 3,000 lumen laser projectors with high-tech features to create the perfect home cinema in the living room – and beyond. V6050 and V6000, from £3,999 (benq.co.uk)
But of course, a separate, large-scale media room is the ultimate indulgence for dedicated film buffs. From an interior design perspective, form and function must go hand in hand, and that very much starts at the planning stage.

“Main considerations when designing such a space include acoustic separation from adjacent spaces, plenty of soft furnishings to absorb sounds, and the careful setting out of speakers and seating for the optimum viewing experience,” says Helen. “Loose furnishings such as movable side tables are key for snacks and drinks, as is a well-appointed refreshments area for popcorn and drinks top-ups. Comfort is hugely important, too. Think about using lots of throws and blankets. And it’s worth investing in reclining chairs with extra-deep seating”. When it comes to furniture choices in a home cinema room, comfort and glamour top our list of priorities. Here, modular seating comes into its own, especially if you have a large family to entertain (or, indeed, when the time comes for inviting friends over). flexible media room: create a cosy settee with spare modules to put your feet up, or build a sprawling corner unit to spread out on in style. Alternatively, take a design cue from some of the Capital’s best indie picture houses and mix vintage armchairs with velvet loveseats and battered leather sofas to recreate that bespoke, laid-back look. “You’d be forgiven for thinking home cinemas can look rather standard from a design perspective,” says Massimiliano Gritti, co-founder of fashion and interiors destination, Bombinate. “They are, after all, attempting to emulate the real thing: dark, velvety spaces where we can enjoy the best cinema has to offer. It’s important to remember though, when recreating a cinema at home, that you can stray from tradition. This is an opportunity to explore the dark side of design – colours you might not feel brave enough to commit to in other parts of the house: think deep Bordeaux, inky blacks and midnight purples.” Interior designer Fiona Barratt-Campbell headed up the ambitious residential project on the opening pages of this feature, which saw a utilitarian cellar transformed into a sumptuous home cinema room, and it recalls the best of old Hollywood glamour. “Our brief on this project was to create a comfortable family home with a more traditional aesthetic,” she explains. “We converted the cellar into a cinema, adding wooden panelling to the walls and linen to the beautiful
arched ceiling. The small windows, originally used to keep sunlight out to protect the food and wine stored there, are now an advantage in a room used to watch movies and spend time together as a family.” Avoiding mid-movie trips to the kitchen, Fiona also incorporated a bespoke drinks cabinet from her sister company, FBC London. fionabarrattinteriors.com
Above and left: Helen Westlake of Millier uses sumptuous furnishings, low lighting and seamlessly integrated technology to create the ultimate cocoon
A successful media room doesn’t allow technology to upset the aesthetic – and that goes for a home cinema set-up of any shape or size. The best designers will go above and beyond in finding nifty solutions to disguise big screens and incorporate cutting edge surround sound. Philip Dowds, managing director at OKTO Technologies says “Our high net worth clients approach purchasing a screen in the same way they would a piece of furniture or artwork, it needs to fit in with their often professionally designed homes. Popular products at the moment include TVs that look like a piece of artwork when not in use, rollable screens, and bespoke technology that’s been designed with luxurious fabrics in a wide range of colours and textures, all tailored to go hand in hand with the client’s surroundings.” oktotechnologies.co.uk So dim the lights, sink into your sumptuous velvety seat and enjoy the thrill of that 20th Century Fox intro – all from the comfort of your own, tastefully designed, home cinema.

JOANNA THORNHILL
This interiors stylist and writer shares her two bed Victorian terrace with fiancé Paul and their Romanian rescue dog, Stella. While the property may be small in footprint, with Joanna’s creative input, it is undeniably big on character WORDS by ALI HOWARD
A

s a writer, Joanna isn’t a fan of the overused ‘eclectic’ but concedes that it is, perhaps, the most appropriate word to describe her style. Her London home is, after all, filled with a mix of vintage finds, mid-century design classics, and quirky contemporary artwork. “I favour real, lived-in, imperfect spaces over anything immaculately designed and perfectly co-ordinated,” she explains. “I’m quite more-is-more, though despite my interiors looking pretty busy at first glance, I’m super organised and have to have everything in its place. I find mess stressful, though, conversely, spaces which are too sparse make me feel anxious, so it’s a constant balancing act!” Aligning stress and anxiety – or a lack thereof – with the way our homes function is a pertinent area of interest for Joanna, who this month releases her fourth interiors tome,
The New Mindful Home. The book encourages us all to slow down and embrace a more considered way of living, whether that’s by bringing nature indoors, adopting responsible consumer habits, or discovering our buried passion for patchwork quilting. “At the start of the first lockdown, I redecorated our spare room to become a very calming, tranquil space to use for meditation and yoga, but to my surprise I found its relative emptiness somewhat stifling,” she says. “So I ended up filling it with colourful artworks and a giant pinboard full of my favourite art postcards and prints. Often people equate a mindful space with a minimal design, but it’s a very personal thing. For me, being surrounded by loads of things I love is actually more relaxing than a monastic-style space.” Joanna’s home is demonstrably lived in and loved, and that comes through in every thoughtfully placed furniture piece and curated object with a story behind it. When it comes to her preferred architectural style it’s little wonder she plumps for period, every time. “Character is super important to me: that tangible connection to the past is such an intrinsic part of being human, and in an older property you can really get a sense of that, with all its quirks and imperfections,” she says. The house was a buy-to-let property before Joanna and Paul moved in, and she describes it as the perfect doer-upper – one that needed a top-to-toe overhaul, but not a total house of horrors. “Everything in it was cheap and falling apart, yet it was perfectly liveable while we slowly worked our way around replacing everything.” In the process of the makeover, Joanna unearthed a few hidden gems, the kind you’d only find in a property of a certain age, and these have been lovingly incorporated into the current décor. “I was overjoyed to discover a hidden wood-panelled wall in our dining room, and during our kitchen renovation, our builders found loads of old beer bottles, pickle jars and newspapers under the floorboards, dating back around a century. I was so enamoured with them we installed an additional shelf to display them all on, much to the builders’ bemusement.” She also goes on to describe the swathes of original wallpaper hidden behind the offending ’70s woodchip, some of which she was able to salvage. “A lot was very badly damaged, but I decided to retain a feature panel as I couldn’t

bear to cover it back over. It’s not to everyone’s taste, but for me, it’s an integral part of our home and I love taking a pause to think about how it would have looked in all its original glory.” Collecting interesting accessories, soft furnishings and larger furniture pieces is second nature to Joanna, whose keen eye for colour and pattern is evident throughout her home, from the William Morris-clad wingback to the bright vintage tea tins holding dried hydrangeas. “The look and style of my home tends to gradually evolve, as needs change or I decide I’d like to use the space a little differently,” she says. “I favour decorating with pieces which either hold sentimental value, such as hand-me-downs, or items procured on holidays or special trips, alongside lots of vintage and handmade pieces: everything tends to have a similar vibe about it and it all just sort of works.” Joanna’s best thrifty find is a Victorian wooden sign, believed to be an old theatre prop. “A downstairs neighbour was throwing it out and I spotted it out of my window and ran down to ask if I could have it,” she says. Her most extravagant? The Ercol Originals loveseat, which she bought new in the knowledge that it would eventually become an heirloom. “It felt like more of an investment than a purchase,” she justifies. One thing’s for certain, nobody will love it more than its current owner. The New Mindful Home: And How to Make it Yours by Joanna Thornhill, £14.99, published 15 April (laurenceking.com)

Peter Bevan Head of Residential, Savills Kensington
I’ve been selling prime properties in London now for 20 years after stumbling into the career slightly by accident - in truth, I needed to buy a car. But I quickly found it addictive. Having joined Savills last April, I’m grateful to have a deeply knowledgeable team working with me. Kensington attracts a broad demographic of buyers looking to lay down roots. Not only is it full of family houses and green spaces but the community, which ranges from established old world families to tech billionaires, is unfailingly accommodating and multi-cultural. They are also infectiously loyal to the area. Buying a house - especially a family house - is an emotional step, not a one-dimensional investment. As an agent, this is one of the best aspects of a job. Having the opportunity to get to know the clients and understand their requirements to then seeing them settled into their new home is immensely satisfying. “One of my favourite parts of Kensington, tucked just behind St Mary Abbots Church, is Kensington Church Walk, a quaint pedestrian street with beautiful independent stores. Take a stroll to the top and you will find The Elephant and Castle, a welcoming, cosy pub in a picturesque location, perfect for enjoying a drink outside on a summer’s day.”

“As an area we are blessed with some of the finest and most varied types of housing, as well as two of London’s finest parks, a royal palace, two tube stations, an excellent high street in revival mode, and easy access to the countryside. So it’s no wonder that as a residential destination we have an exceptionally strong domestic and overseas market.”
Bradley Evans Music producer and dog trainer
My life is equally dedicated to two seemingly disparate worlds: those of music production and dog training. I’m also an absolute foodie; and being a resident of Kensington means I’m fortunate to have a plethora of venues on the doorstep, at which to slake the thirst of both my indoor and outdoor pursuits. I spend most days exercising my dog Rocky, or meeting canine clients in either Holland Park or Kensington Gardens. Both of these parks are an absolute joy to walk and train in, not to mention being great for kids: Holland Park, with its peacocks and the adventure playground (which health and safety regulations tamed and sanitised many moons ago, but was historically the location of much fun during my ’70s childhood, not to mention the source of most of my cuts and bruises), and Kensington Gardens, with its ornamental lake and the Diana Memorial playground. There’s nothing quite like a post walk pint at the very dog friendly The Mitre pub, which also serves a fantastic Sunday roast. As I mentioned, the foodie in me has much to be grateful to the Royal Borough for, and my partner and I often eat at our local pubs. The Windsor Castle on Campden Hill Road being where we headed with some haste for a first cold pint in their lovely garden after the first lockdown ended. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the crispy belly
of pork is also fantastic there! Another firm favourite is The Churchill Arms on Kensington Church Street, which is a charming little pub that also just happens to serve some of the best Thai grub in London. Now I’m not saying that my world is actually ruled by my stomach (ahem), but one of my favourite local places to shop is the wonderful Supermarket of Dreams on Holland Park Avenue; a source of Comfort & Joy (quite literally), fresh fish, amazing meat and a multitude of sweet treats. And the famous Lidgates on the same road, a purveyor of fine meat, is my butcher of choice. A weekend stroll down Portobello Road is still great fun and my daughter absolutely loves a bit of vintage clothes shopping, although I smile to myself at the realisation that at 50 years old I now feel a little more ‘vintage’ than most of the items on offer. For more modern fare you really can’t do much better than Kensington High Street. If it’s night life you’re after, Kensington High Street has a wonderful piano bar, or for a more energetic night out, you could do a lot worse than join me for a post lockdown boogie at Notting Hill Arts Club, where my love of good music is often sated at one of their regular nights, a favourite being Restless Funk. Benham & Reeves’ Brett Boyd singles out a remarkable group who have really made a difference during lockdown – the team at Dads House, which was set up in 2008 to help single dads with the practicalities of raising their children alone. “The staff and volunteers have been amazing in the way they’ve promptly added a food bank to their services,” he tells us. “Showing true community spirit, the West Brompton based team ensure that no-one who seeks help goes away emptyhanded and they readily arrange deliveries to those who are vulnerable or shielding.”
The whole team at Bective recommend W8 Café for its “great bacon sandwiches as well as healthier options at reasonable prices for Kensington.” Tucked away just off Kensington High Street, you’d be forgiven for missing this unassuming but award-winning establishment – for those in the know, it is a neighbourhood staple. The café is just one part of the business, however, and W8 Catering will deliver delectable food for everything from private gatherings up to large corporate events. Expect a comprehensive menu of baguettes, sandwich platters, canapés, finger food and ready-made meals.
For Chestertons’ Daniel Taylor, this bakery/ deli is a local gem, not just for its excellent food offering, but its responsible practices, too. “The deli showcases sustainability at its core,” he says. “They tackle food waste from the outset, by taking fish or meat trimmings that may be unsuitable for their menus, or any excess vegetables, salads and herbs, and turning them into delicious staff meals. The team also donate unsold breads and pastries to charities such as The Felix Project and Dads House, both of which collect and distribute the excess food to those in need.”

Now a charming and highly sought after cobbled mews, Pottery Lane took its name from the brickfields at its northern end, where high-quality clay was dug in the early 1800s. The holes resulting from digging often filled with rubbish and effluent, forming stinking, stagnant pools. In 1850 Charles Dickens described the area as “a plague spot scarcely equalled for its insalubrity by any other in London.” 68

Online schooling – the next big thing? We meet the staff of Harrow School Online, to discover why online schools are growing in popularity
Benefits of online schools In today’s uncertain landscape, online schooling offers stability and security for pupils – something which is particularly important during those school years when they are preparing for crucial exams. Online schooling can reach students wherever they are located and give them the flexibility to fit learning around their lives. The ability to personalise learning to individuals is incredibly powerful too – pupils can be stretched where possible and supported when required. Students at a well-designed online school can thrive academically while developing the skills and mindset to become better independent learners, which they will need in order to excel at university. In recent years the sector has grown hugely, and it is expected that it will continue growing as more students discover the benefits and flexibility of online learning. Introducing Harrow School Online Harrow School Online is the first of its kind – a fully online sixth form school offering a world leading independent British education. It brings together the richness and heritage of a Harrow School education with leading online learning technology and teaching practices. Heather Rhodes, Principal, tells us: “Planning for the school began several years ago and we opened our virtual doors to the first cohort of
A Level pupils in September 2020. We believe that online education done well can be as effective as classroom-based teaching, but that the key is not to try and translate what works in a traditional bricks and mortar school directly into an online environment. Each environment has its advantages, and virtual schooling should be organised to make the most of its innate strengths.” Flipping the classroom Online teaching works particularly effectively with a ‘flipped classroom’ teaching methodology. This involves students working through interactive self-study materials to develop an understanding of subject content, and then having targeted lessons in a virtual classroom where teachers explore their understanding of that material. Class sizes are small – no more than ten pupils – so teachers get to know their pupils well. Lessons are highly interactive, and teachers make use of tools like polling, interactive whiteboards, and break out rooms where pupils work with their peers. Laurie Phippard, Mathematics and Further Mathematics teacher explains how it works in practice: “One of the fantastic benefits of studying maths at Harrow School Online is that you can access the mathematics content at your own pace. You can revisit it as many times as you wish. Your tutor will also support you with topics
that you might find daunting, but in addition, enrich or extend as needed for other topics, and of course provide encouragement.” Pastoral care Alongside this focus on academic excellence, through regular meetings with a Success Coach, the school ensures that all pupils are safe, happy, involved and able to perform to their potential. Additionally, a House system forms the backbone of the school community, providing the chance for peer support and encouragement. The school’s Success Coach Dale Krause brings a wealth of experience of supporting high achieving pupils and co-ordinating support for pupils who require additional assistance. He tells us: “From day one, I coach pupils on university selection and provide carefully tailored career planning. I develop in them the skills and mindset for success, both at our school and beyond. In fortnightly one-to-one coaching sessions, and small group workshops, I provide students with careful guidance on how to become effective independent learners.” Prospective pupils and parents can learn more about Harrow School Online and get a flavour for what the sixth form experience is like by watching an On Demand Open Event, which provides the opportunity to hear from the teachers and pupils at the school. A personalised learning approach What does a personalised online education really mean for students? Pearson Online Academy explains Introducing Pearson Online Academy UK Global Pearson Online Academy UK Global is a high-quality personalised online private school delivering Pearson Edexcel International GCSEs and A Levels for students aged 14–18 that can be accessed virtually anywhere. It is designed to inspire and empower students to achieve academic excellence through affordable online education that prepares them for brilliant futures. One of the biggest benefits of online schooling is the ability to personalise each student’s learning, but what does that actually mean? And how can it be achieved online? Mickey Revenaugh, Vice President, Business Development, Pearson
Global Online Learning explains: “To personalise is to design or produce something to meet an individual’s requirements. Personalising a student’s learning isn’t a one-time process, it is ongoing with students, Success Coaches, parents, and teachers working together to set, review and adjust individualised learning goals and determine a timeline for accomplishing these throughout the school years.” Personalised Performance Learning At Pearson Online Academy UK Global, a Personalised Performance Learning approach gives every student the best chance to flourish. Every student receives the one-on-
one, tailored attention they deserve, and it starts from the point at which successful applications are made. As students enter the school, they discuss their strengths, skills, and previous school performance with their teachers, Success Coaches and parents to help inform and guide the best teaching and personalised online learning approach. These conversations, along with assessments and other data, are used to identify and evaluate a student’s strengths, weaknesses and talents, to help select courses and create a learning plan based on the student’s individual needs. In this way, skills that may need improvement are uncovered and staff are able to look for ways to enhance the student’s learning potential – a practice that continues throughout the school, where subject testing is used to identify areas of strength and weakness, measure progress, and establish learning goals. Regular communication schedules and adjustments to learning plans and timetables, as well as electives, means teachers, Success Coaches and students can collectively ensure individual needs are met. 20 years of experience Underpinning this Personalised Performance Learning approach is over 20 years of experience supporting online schools to engage and flourish. Pearson have specifically created educational programmes for online learning to ensure that every student is fully engaged in their learning and that teachers are equipped to bring out the very best in them. Within the structure of a complete school programme, students use the online

learning platform to study from home, joining ‘LiveLesson’ sessions to deepen their understanding with expert teachers and their fellow students across the world. This ‘flipped classroom’ has been proven to increase student engagement and encourage critical thinking, whilst working alongside peers from other countries helps to broaden their understanding of different cultures and build an international network of friends. Online learning platforms Pearson’s online learning platforms are currently being used by over 105,000 students to power their learning. Students follow an individual learning pathway, working through high quality, interactive, self-paced study materials, with teachers using LiveLesson sessions, office hours, and other contact time to stretch them where possible and offer more support when needed. The flexibility of self-paced learning combined with the extracurricular activities and a Success Coach helps students stay on track to meet their personal targets and allows them to thrive with their education. By building and managing their own timetables, students receive a personalised experience that gives them control over their learning and fosters independence and self-discipline. This approach sets the school apart from the rest and ensures each and every student is able to achieve their potential. A global education
Hawkesdown House School How would you sum up the school? Hawkesdown House School is an outstanding school, full of fun, purpose and success, inspiring and challenging the mind and the imagination of each pupil.
The pandemic has led us to reassess all aspects of life, inspiring us to initiate positive change amid the uncertainty. In particular, it has caused a seismic shift in education; with a move to more online learning, new methods of assessment and greater focus on certain subjects, the last 12 months have given us an opportunity to rethink how schooling can and should work better. In line with that, new research published by leading independent education provider Fulham School indicates that the traditional A level style education may be falling out of favour with parents. The survey of over 1,000 UK parents (of children aged 18 and under) was carried out on behalf of the school by YouGov. When asked which skills and attributes the ideal education programme should help develop, there was widespread agreement
that parents would like their children’s school to focus on confidence, critical thinking and taking responsibility. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma offers just such a focus for sixth form students. Based on the philosophy that students should apply critical thinking skills to their experiences and learn to assess the world around them, the course encourages the development of academic, social, emotional, and physical wellbeing, and prepares students to participate in a truly global society. Survey responses suggested strong support for this style of education, where the curriculum is made up of six subject groups – each one assessed on theory of knowledge, creativity, independent research, community service and an extended essay.
However, the survey also found that nearly half of parents had not heard of the IB programme before, and of those who had, a quarter had not yet considered enrolling their children in it. Commenting on the findings, Chris Cockerill, Head of Fulham Senior School and Sixth Form, where the IB will be taught from September, said: “The IB is education’s best kept secret. These findings clearly show that parents are looking for an education programme that is going to help their children leave traditional education at the age of 18 as enquiring, principled and global thinkers. Parents know what they want for their children – they just don’t realise yet that this is exactly what the IB delivers. It’s a global education for a global world.” (fulham.school; inspirededu.com)

What makes it different? Parents value the individual attention their children get – it gives the school its strong family feel. We achieve superbly well at 7+ and 8+, with children moving on to some of the best schools in London and the Home Counties. Ultimately, what makes us different is that we have an adventurous soul and spirit, a strong voice and a desire to be individual. We want our pupils to feel treasured and nurtured, yet also to have the desire to want to do well. What is the atmosphere like? I would describe it as ‘buzzing’. Our curriculum is awash with excitement, adventure and the joy of success. We have a very nurturing environment, which enables young minds to make the most of all the opportunities on offer – and there are a great deal of them. How do you look after the wellbeing of your pupils? The whole ethos is of kindness. Happiness, confidence, having a sense of autonomy over one’s life, developing resilience and forming good relationships are all fostered at Hawkesdown. We ensure emotional wellbeing and resilience is carefully nurtured. In a fast-paced world this is crucial to growing happy, healthy minds and bodies. Happy pupils perform better in school and in life! How do you balance the academic side? Our curriculum delivers the academic subjects in a broad and strong programme, but throughout, we develop creative and original thinking to allow pupils to explore, question, make connections and discoveries. Education as an adventure helps academic excellence and initiative. 27 Edge Street, W8 (020 7727 9090; hawkesdown.co.uk)

CHARITY
Challenge Alex Savills’ development director, Alex Soskin, has completed the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge – AKA ‘the world’s toughest row’ – and raised a whopping £100,000 for charity. Alex and his team, Oardacity, finished the race after an exhausting 40 days, 6 hours and 35 minutes at sea. He tells us, “The race itself was a battle with mother nature. This was a physical challenge but the mental challenge was far greater. Our mental resilience was fully put to the test and I couldn’t be prouder to have shared this incredible journey alongside three great mates, Harry Hearn, Ed Batchelor and Tom Phillips… a bond we will have for life!” Thanks to the team’s sterling efforts, the money raised will be split between mental health charity MIND and the Christina Noble Children’s Foundation, an international NGO, dedicated to serving the world’s oppressed and marginalised children.
