That said, I’m feeling fairly positive about the prospect of the further easing of restrictions this month. Making a joyous return to the physical art scene is this annual group show, which promises a riot of colour and form. In highly anticipated new show The Irregulars, Netflix revisits the stories of Sherlock Holmes, but fans are in for a surprise, because this series depicts a very different world to that which we’ve seen in previous adaptations. The focus is the Baker Street Irregulars, a group of street kids who featured in three of Conan Doyle’s novels, employed by the detective to help him source information he couldn’t access himself. Royce Pierreson, who plays John Watson, tells me, “It’s a kind of flipped version of Sherlock Holmes. Based in his world, but focusing on this group of street kids who are working for him… It has this brilliant energy to it, and it is totally different to any Sherlock you may have read, or seen, or listened to.” In his adaptation, creator Tom Bidwell reimagines the young gang of boys from the books as a group of teens who must race against time to stop a supernatural darkness from descending on London. “I think it will catch people off guard,” Royce says. “Old fans, even those who don’t really know the universe at all, will maybe have a perception of it, but they are going to be really surprised. It is genuinely dark – I couldn’t sleep after filming one of the episodes,” he laughs. “Tom balances it all so well though. It is very dark, really scary, but it is also funny

and energetic – it has this brilliant energy to it. I think it is a really good mix. I’m excited for people to see it.” It was a part Royce just couldn’t say no to, he explains. “I have always wanted to play John Watson, I know that sounds convenient, but it’s true. My mum has all of the Penguin Classics, so I have been reading them for a long time, and I love the world. And I love Conan Doyle’s writing – I think it is the most brilliant storytelling there is. So, when I got the audition, it was a shock for a long time.” Perhaps unsurprisingly, Royce plays a very different Watson to the modest, patient and sensitive observer who we know so well. “I wanted to do him my way,” he reveals. “He is a voice of reason, he is the dogsbody, he is the sidekick… I wanted to flip it on its head. I think there is a real darkness to him, as you will see as the series goes on. I don’t want to give too much away, but there is much to unravel. I wanted to create this version of Watson who is haggard and tired. I spoke to the make-up artist and I said: ‘You have to make this a real, real character: dark and mysterious.’ So, we made him kind of sallow and wrinkled and old before his time. He is a very troubled man, with a lot of secrets, and I really wanted to bring that out.”

The series, which began streaming at the end of March, has been a long time coming. Filming was due to wrap around this time last year, but with only weeks left on the schedule, everything ground to a halt when the country was thrown into the first lockdown. “We were so close, we were so, so close to wrapping,” Royce recalls. “I think we were about two weeks away from that, and then everything shut down. So, we had six months away from it, and started working again in the summer.” “The end of it was the accumulation of all of the hard work that we had done – we were emerging in this new reality to finish the show. So, there is a lot of emotion in that last bit, for many reasons,” Royce tells me. “It was a surreal way to work, but I am super proud of everybody, because of what we got done with all of the regulations we had to work under, and having to be away from family, and all of these things happening… you see the results, you see how much energy people brought to those last few weeks and it is a real testament to everybody that we got it in the bag. It was really tough, I am not going to lie. For me it wasn’t a nice way to work, in that weird reality. But coming back, and seeing everybody was great, and we got through it and the results are amazing, and I am really excited to share it,” he smiles.

As difficult as it is, this new way of working is something that Royce has had to get used to. Filming was supposed to start in spring last year on the second series of The Witcher, the Netflix fantasy series based on the books of Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski in which Royce plays sorcerer Istredd. “I would’ve had about five days break between finishing The Irregulars and starting on that,” he recalls. Actually, filming only started towards the end of last year, and is ongoing. “It is another amazing achievement in the middle of all of this,” Royce tells me. “Netflix have been unbelievable; just to see the precautions and the safety that they have put in place for everybody day to day. So, I feel very lucky to get to work there. It is all happening because of their hard work. It is easy to take for granted. You know, you come in and you get tested three times a week. And you realise that that is not the reality for a lot of people. That you are lucky to be able to do your job without any worries. It has been an amazingly weird but brilliant year in terms of work.” Alongside these jobs, Royce has been busy with some more personal projects. “I run a production company called Another Method Productions, and we have just signed a really exciting deal,” he tells me, enthusiastically. “I can’t talk about it much right now, but we have a plan to make a TV series that I think is going to

be a real game changer. It explores issues of race. It is really exciting and we’re in the pre-production stages of that right now. And I am doing a lot of writing as well. I have just produced my first short film, with Georgina Campbell, who I worked with on Murdered by my Boyfriend. It’s a two hander, with me and her, written by my sister actually, Tyler Pierreson – she is a wonderful creator and writer. It was shot in a day and a half and it is some of the best work. It looks fantastic. That is wrapped up. And I have a few other projects on the go, so I am very busy with all of that. It is fantastic.” Having worked in the industry for the past 10 years, Royce’s is a familiar face. The actor is probably most recognisable for having played Reece in the BAFTA award-winning BBC 3 drama Murdered by my Boyfriend, and Jamie Desford in the fourth season of Line of Duty. Recalling how he came to acting, he tells me: “I remember watching A Streetcar Named Desire when I was about 15, and I didn’t know anything about the industry, or who Brando was and the impact he had had. After an hour and a half watching it, I was just like, ‘I want to be Marlon Brando – let me do that!’,” he laughs. “I started reading Shakespeare and just fell in love with texts, and I guess, internally performing,” he explains. “You hear actors say they are actually very shy and reserved, and I

think it is true for a lot of us, definitely me. I used to have massive stage fright. In my head I always knew that I could act, if the circumstances were right. So, I had to teach myself to be okay with feeling uncomfortable, to being exposed, and, you know, fucking up. I realised I could give myself a choice. I could be like, okay, I’ve tried it, and there is absolutely no way I want that feeling again, or yeah, I can live with that and I can use that feeling to become a better actor. So, I kept coming back to it, and I gained a lot of confidence through doing that. Luckily, I got into drama school first time. And I set my sights on signing with an agency and moved to London.” Royce is proud of the work he has done since those early days. “I look at my CV, and I think these are people that I wanted to work with and characters I wanted to play at that time. And it is a really lovely thing to see that thought process through your CV,” he tells me. “Everything that I have on there is absolutely what I wanted to do; there is never going to be anything on my CV that I look at and go, ‘ah somebody told me to do that, and I didn’t want to’ – these are my decisions.” “So much of being an actor is being able to say yes and no. And the more your profile builds, the more you can say yes or no to. Financially, as well, it becomes easier to say no,” he explains. “Even when you first start as actor, you can still do that, but so many actors give that away, saying, ‘I’ll do anything, I’ll do anything’.

And then you build your reputation on that, and you get to a certain level, and realise that you have given up that yes and no. So, for me, I hold on to that, absolutely. I love my CV and I love the progression.” Being proud of his choices doesn’t mean that he believes he has played every role perfectly, though. “Some of them work, some of them don’t work, bits of some work…” he admits. But however he feels about the outcome, Royce says that he makes a point of watching everything. “By watching yourself, you get to see your progression, which is an amazing thing. You know, from first job to twentieth job, you can see how you’ve developed, and you look at what worked and what didn’t work. You see what you don’t think is truthful right now, or what you really believe in. It’s my work, you know what I mean? I feel like, whatever decision I made on the day of filming, was exactly the decision I wanted to make at that point. That is exactly what I was feeling on that day, so that is exactly what I put into the character. Whatever comes out, comes out – that’s the truth. I feel like, if you don’t watch yourself, it is like if you cook a meal and you do not try it – you go, ‘no, I don’t taste my food, I don’t like it’. You would never do that, you know!” On the subject of cooking, Royce tells me that he briefly considered being a chef, before pursuing his career in acting. “I always wanted

to do something where you are creating something from different components – I have always been drawn to things like that. I still enjoy cooking, but it’s usually very obscure stuff. I do it by taste. So, when I cook for my fiancée, she is very wary, because I put in so much stuff. And I’m like, ‘please, just try it, I swear to you it tastes good!’ And most of it does taste good, but there is a certain per cent that you really don’t want to go there!” he laughs. Up close and personal If you’ve been taking things easy over lockdown, the thought of getting back to regular exercise might be daunting. With gyms reopening this month, we asked Haydn Elliott, head trainer and co-owner of F45 Oxford Circus and F45 Soho for his advice on re-finding your feet with fitness. Here are his top tips:

you must focus on getting good quality sleep, at least 7-9 hours a night. As mentioned, your body is going to really feel the effects of this increased intensity, so you need to give yourself time to recover. As well as sleep, you must ensure that you are properly hydrating, with several litres of water throughout the day, and nourishing your body with an adequate protein intake.

Up your movement – It is important to start getting up and about again and be a bit more active. People have been a lot more sedentary for longer periods of time than they would have usually. Yes, a short 20-25 minute workout is good, but I think right now it’s more about getting the body moving more frequently than adding in long sessions of intense training. Choose walking, mobility, stretching or anything else that will help your body ease away from the fairly restricted movement patterns we have been accustomed to for months. Ease yourself into your workout – It is important to remember that we’ve spent the past 3-4 months in lockdown, so we would advise initially holding off from giving your workouts the full 100 per cent, particularly in the first week, as your body is going to really feel it. Focus on recovery – Be conscious of your recovery during this initial period. It’s something that is always extremely important, but when coming back to more intense training structure

I would give exactly the same advice to people who have never worked out before. Right now, people have been fairly inactive for the past 3-4 months, so it is like everyone is starting their own journey again. Now is the time to leave your pride at the door and try to enjoy the process rather than getting too focused on aesthetics. On the house While we miss meals out, we love that the events of the past year have encouraged restaurateurs to get creative with their offering. Take Highbury’s neighbourhood restaurant and wine shop, Top Cuvée, which took its natural wine offering online with Shop Cuvée during the first lockdown. The demand was so huge that within a matter of weeks, delivery was being offered nationwide, and by the beginning of 2021 the team had sold enough bottles of natural wine to fill 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools!

With the Top Cuvée dining room out of action for a little longer, the team have just launched House Wine – working with their favourite makers to select wines that are at their peak seasonally. Co-owner Brodie Meah says, ‘we’ve been looking to implement this idea since we opened the restaurant in 2019. People were always asking if they could get bottles of our house wine to take away… we saw now as the perfect time to do it!’ Wines are purchased in kegs, straight from the producer, and then

bottled and labelled in-house to keep environmental impacts low. METHOD Heat the oil and butter in a frying or saute pan and cook the pigeon breast fillets on a medium heat for about 3 minutes on each side, turning once. Remove and set aside to rest (keep warm). Fry the bacon in the pan until

crunchy. Remove and set aside. Add the red wine to the pan and sizzle for a minute, then add the stock, honey and redcurrant jelly. Bubble for a few minutes until the mixture is syrupy. Place the pigeon on top of the salad leaves. Top with bacon, pine nuts, crumbled cheese and grapes. Drizzle with the sauce and serve immediately. With the news that we’ll be able to meet with friends and family outdoors this month, we’ve been researching posh picnics – we might not be able to get back to our favourite restaurants just yet, but that doesn’t mean we can’t socialise in style. What do you cook on your days off? Normally I don’t cook at home, unless my family requests a special dish that they find difficult to make for themselves! What’s the best meal you’ve ever eaten? In Japan, at Ginza Kojyu where the grilled freshwater eel was outstanding. In London, I loved The Clove Club – their menu is similar in style to Kaiseki, a traditional multicourse Japanese dinner. If you could cook for anyone, who would it be? I’d love to cook for my parents, who live in Japan. I haven’t been able to go back and see them

since February 2019. I would make them Sukiyaki, a traditional Japanese hot-pot style dish, with Wagyu beef, as it’s their favourite meal. Guilty food pleasure? After a long shift, I love nothing more than tucking into a steaming bowl of ramen noodles at midnight. What should no kitchen be without? Good knives and passion. home cinema has always been a desirable commodity but the pandemic has pushed the concept from luxury into the realms of necessity. Our lockdown weeks have been punctuated with at-home movie nights complete with drinks and popcorn, and in an otherwise stark social calendar, they’ve proved a sanity-saver. It’s little wonder, then, that media rooms are having a moment – and according to those in the know, from interior design to tech, they’re here to stay. “Home cinema rooms are incredibly popular at the moment – we’re all looking for some escapism,” says Helen Westlake, creative director at Marylebone-based architecture and interiors studio, Millier. “A dedicated entertainment room for movies and games, fully kitted out with sumptuous furnishings, low lighting and seamlessly integrated technology and acoustics offers a cocoon from the world. They’re also a truly flexible space for multi-generational family living and entertainment, which I think adds to their enduring desirability.” millierlondon.com

Space is naturally a concern if you’re looking to incorporate a big screen into your home, but you don’t necessarily need a spare room to achieve a cinematic experience. The beauty of a home cinema set-up is that it can be as simple, or as elaborate, as your floorplan dictates. Just as we’ve turned our bedroom into a home gym and flipped our kitchen into a classroom over the past year, our living space can transform into a makeshift movie theatre in an instant with the addition of a projector, a pull down screen and a few cosy beanbags to sink ourselves into – cocktail in hand. “Main considerations when designing such a space include acoustic separation from adjacent spaces, plenty of soft furnishings to absorb sounds, and the careful setting out of speakers and seating for the optimum viewing experience,” says Helen. “Loose furnishings such as movable side tables are key for snacks and drinks, as is a well-appointed refreshments area for popcorn and drinks top-ups. Comfort is hugely important, too. Think about using lots of throws and blankets. And it’s worth investing in reclining chairs with extra-deep seating”. When it comes to furniture choices in a home cinema room, comfort and glamour top our list of priorities. Here, modular seating comes into its own, especially if you have a large family to entertain (or, indeed, when the time comes for inviting friends over). Alternatively, take a design cue from some of the Capital’s best indie picture houses and mix vintage armchairs with velvet loveseats and battered leather sofas to recreate that bespoke, laid-back look. “You’d be forgiven for thinking home cinemas can look rather standard from a design perspective,” says Massimiliano Gritti, co-founder of fashion and interiors destination, Bombinate. “They are, after all, attempting to emulate the real thing: dark, velvety spaces where we can enjoy the best cinema has to offer. It’s important to remember though, when recreating a cinema at home, that you can stray from tradition. This is an opportunity to explore the dark side of design – colours you might not feel brave enough to commit to in other parts of the house: think deep Bordeaux, inky blacks and midnight purples.” Interior designer Fiona Barratt-Campbell headed up the ambitious residential project on the opening pages of this feature, which saw a utilitarian cellar transformed into a sumptuous home cinema room, and it recalls the best of old Hollywood glamour. “Our brief on this project was to create a comfortable family home with a more traditional aesthetic,” she explains. “We converted the cellar into a cinema, adding wooden panelling to the walls and linen to the beautiful

arched ceiling. The small windows, originally used to keep sunlight out to protect the food and wine stored there, are now an advantage in a room used to watch movies and spend time together as a family.” Avoiding mid-movie trips to the kitchen, Fiona also incorporated a bespoke drinks cabinet from her sister company, FBC London. fionabarrattinteriors.com

s a writer, Joanna isn’t a fan of the overused ‘eclectic’ but concedes that it is, perhaps, the most appropriate word to describe her style. Her London home is, after all, filled with a mix of vintage finds, mid-century design classics, and quirky contemporary artwork. “I favour real, lived-in, imperfect spaces over anything immaculately designed and perfectly co-ordinated,” she explains. “I’m quite more-is-more, though despite my interiors looking pretty busy at first glance, I’m super organised and have to have everything in its place. I find mess stressful, though, conversely, spaces which are too sparse make me feel anxious, so it’s a constant balancing act!” Aligning stress and anxiety – or a lack thereof – with the way our homes function is a pertinent area of interest for Joanna, who this month releases her fourth interiors tome,

The New Mindful Home. The book encourages us all to slow down and embrace a more considered way of living, whether that’s by bringing nature indoors, adopting responsible consumer habits, or discovering our buried passion for patchwork quilting. “At the start of the first lockdown, I redecorated our spare room to become a very calming, tranquil space to use for meditation and yoga, but to my surprise I found its relative emptiness somewhat stifling,” she says. “So I ended up filling it with colourful artworks and a giant pinboard full of my favourite art postcards and prints. Often people equate a mindful space with a minimal design, but it’s a very personal thing. For me, being surrounded by loads of things I love is actually more relaxing than a monastic-style space.” Joanna’s home is demonstrably lived in and loved, and that comes through in every thoughtfully placed furniture piece and curated object with a story behind it. When it comes to her preferred architectural style it’s little wonder she plumps for period, every time. “Character is super important to me: that tangible connection to the past is such an intrinsic part of being human, and in an older property you can really get a sense of that, with all its quirks and imperfections,” she says. The house was a buy-to-let property before Joanna and Paul moved in, and she describes it as the perfect doer-upper – one that needed a top-to-toe overhaul, but not a total house of horrors. “Everything in it was cheap and falling apart, yet it was perfectly liveable while we slowly worked our way around replacing everything.” In the process of the makeover, Joanna unearthed a few hidden gems, the kind you’d only find in a property of a certain age, and these have been lovingly incorporated into the current décor. “I was overjoyed to discover a hidden wood-panelled wall in our dining room, and during our kitchen renovation, our builders found loads of old beer bottles, pickle jars and newspapers under the floorboards, dating back around a century. I was so enamoured with them we installed an additional shelf to display them all on, much to the builders’ bemusement.” She also goes on to describe the swathes of original wallpaper hidden behind the offending ’70s woodchip, some of which she was able to salvage. “A lot was very badly damaged, but I decided to retain a feature panel as I couldn’t

bear to cover it back over. It’s not to everyone’s taste, but for me, it’s an integral part of our home and I love taking a pause to think about how it would have looked in all its original glory.” Collecting interesting accessories, soft furnishings and larger furniture pieces is second nature to Joanna, whose keen eye for colour and pattern is evident throughout her home, from the William Morris-clad wingback to the bright vintage tea tins holding dried hydrangeas. “The look and style of my home tends to gradually evolve, as needs change or I decide I’d like to use the space a little differently,” she says. “I favour decorating with pieces which either hold sentimental value, such as hand-me-downs, or items procured on holidays or special trips, alongside lots of vintage and handmade pieces: everything tends to have a similar vibe about it and it all just sort of works.” Joanna’s best thrifty find is a Victorian wooden sign, believed to be an old theatre prop. “A downstairs neighbour was throwing it out and I spotted it out of my window and ran down to ask if I could have it,” she says. Her most extravagant? The Ercol Originals loveseat, which she bought new in the knowledge that it would eventually become an heirloom. “It felt like more of an investment than a purchase,” she justifies. My life is equally dedicated to two seemingly disparate worlds: those of music production and dog training. I’m also an absolute foodie; and being a resident of Kensington means I’m fortunate to have a plethora of venues on the doorstep, at which to slake the thirst of both my indoor and outdoor pursuits. I spend most days exercising my dog Rocky, or meeting canine clients in either Holland Park or Kensington Gardens. Both of these parks are an absolute joy to walk and train in, not to mention being great for kids: Holland Park, with its peacocks and the adventure playground (which health and safety regulations tamed and sanitised many moons ago, but was historically the location of much fun during my ’70s childhood, not to mention the source of most of my cuts and bruises), and Kensington Gardens, with its ornamental lake and the Diana Memorial playground. There’s nothing quite like a post walk pint at the very dog friendly The Mitre pub, which also serves a fantastic Sunday roast. As I mentioned, the foodie in me has much to be grateful to the Royal Borough for, and my partner and I often eat at our local pubs. The Windsor Castle on Campden Hill Road being where we headed with some haste for a first cold pint in their lovely garden after the first lockdown ended. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the crispy belly

of pork is also fantastic there! Another firm favourite is The Churchill Arms on Kensington Church Street, which is a charming little pub that also just happens to serve some of the best Thai grub in London. Now I’m not saying that my world is actually ruled by my stomach (ahem), but one of my favourite local places to shop is the wonderful Supermarket of Dreams on Holland Park Avenue; a source of Comfort & Joy (quite literally), fresh fish, amazing meat and a multitude of sweet treats. And the famous Lidgates on the same road, a purveyor of fine meat, is my butcher of choice. A weekend stroll down Portobello Road is still great fun and my daughter absolutely loves a bit of vintage clothes shopping, although I smile to myself at the realisation that at 50 years old I now feel a little more ‘vintage’ than most of the items on offer. For more modern fare you really can’t do much better than Kensington High Street. If it’s night life you’re after, Kensington High Street has a wonderful piano bar, or for a more energetic night out, you could do a lot worse than join me for a post lockdown boogie at Notting Hill Arts Club, where my love of good music is often sated at one of their regular nights, a favourite being Restless Funk. The whole team at Bective recommend W8 Café for its “great bacon sandwiches as well as healthier options at reasonable prices for Kensington.” Tucked away just off Kensington High Street, you’d be forgiven for missing this unassuming but award-winning establishment – for those in the know, it is a neighbourhood staple. The café is just one part of the business, however, and W8 Catering will deliver delectable food for everything from private gatherings up to large corporate events. Expect a comprehensive menu of baguettes, sandwich platters, canapés, finger food and ready-made meals.

For Chestertons’ Daniel Taylor, this bakery/ deli is a local gem, not just for its excellent food offering, but its responsible practices, too. “The deli showcases sustainability at its core,” he says. “They tackle food waste from the outset, by taking fish or meat trimmings that may be unsuitable for their menus, or any excess vegetables, salads and herbs, and turning them into delicious staff meals. The team also donate unsold breads and pastries to charities such as The Felix Project and Dads House, both of which collect and distribute the excess food to those in need.”

The pandemic has led us to reassess all aspects of life, inspiring us to initiate positive change amid the uncertainty. In particular, it has caused a seismic shift in education; with a move to more online learning, new methods of assessment and greater focus on certain subjects, the last 12 months have given us an opportunity to rethink how schooling can and should work better. In line with that, new research published by leading independent education provider Fulham School indicates that the traditional A level style education may be falling out of favour with parents. The survey of over 1,000 UK parents (of children aged 18 and under) was carried out on behalf of the school by YouGov. When asked which skills and attributes the ideal education programme should help develop, there was widespread agreement

that parents would like their children’s school to focus on confidence, critical thinking and taking responsibility. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma offers just such a focus for sixth form students. Based on the philosophy that students should apply critical thinking skills to their experiences and learn to assess the world around them, the course encourages the development of academic, social, emotional, and physical wellbeing, and prepares students to participate in a truly global society. Survey responses suggested strong support for this style of education, where the curriculum is made up of six subject groups – each one assessed on theory of knowledge, creativity, independent research, community service and an extended essay.

However, the survey also found that nearly half of parents had not heard of the IB programme before, and of those who had, a quarter had not yet considered enrolling their children in it. Commenting on the findings, Chris Cockerill, Head of Fulham Senior School and Sixth Form, where the IB will be taught from September, said: “The IB is education’s best kept secret. These findings clearly show that parents are looking for an education programme that is going to help their children leave traditional education at the age of 18 as enquiring, principled and global thinkers.
