December 2020
The definitive guide to London living Editor’s letter Liz Skone James With the country currently in lockdown for the second time, it seems highly likely that this Christmas will be a little different, even if the current stay at home restrictions are lifted before the big day. Whereas in the past we’d have been out and about every evening in December, this year we’ll be bringing the festivities home with a virtual wreath making workshop and settling down on the sofa for a live-streamed performance of A Christmas Carol. Our gift guide has a home focus, too, and everything is available online as well as in store. If all else fails, a handmade gift never fails to impress: you’ll find the recipe for a signature sweet treat from Daylesford on our food pages – wrap up prettily et voilà. And while parties might not be on the cards, intimate family celebrations are very much on. We’ll be making them extra special with a suitably sparkly tablescape – we show you how to get the look at home. Finally, cover star Antonia Thomas fills us in on her plans for a very different Christmas, which will mostly be spent in quarantine. We caught up to talk about her part in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series of films. Available on the BBC iPlayer now, we highly recommend checking it out. Here’s wishing you health, happiness and better times ahead in 2021…

Sheldon Avenue is situated directly opposite the vast open acres of Kenwood House and the Iveagh Bequest with both Hampstead Heath and Parliament Hill beyond. A Christmas Carol
12-24 December, The Old Vic
As the pandemic threatens to spoil our festivities in a way that even Ebenezer Scrooge couldn’t contrive, it seems apt that, this December, we revisit Dickens’ Christmas classic. Starring Andrew Lincoln as the aforementioned seasonal villain, Jack Thorne’s A Christmas Carol will be live streamed from the famed Waterloo stage as part of its OLD VIC: IN CAMERA initiative. We’re told to expect a full-scale show complete with 18 performers, live musicians, theatrical lighting, set and costumes – and in true 2020 style, an empty (read fittingly eerie) auditorium. But let’s not forget that at the heart of Dickens’ wintry tale is charity. This production offers free tickets for those in care homes plus vital support to the London-based FoodCycle. Sustainable wreath workshop
Conrad Jon Godly: Nevertheless
3, 10, 17 December, via Zoom
Until 9 January, JD Malat
This is a Zoom workshop for nimble fingers – and one that promises to spark our creativity. Renowned London-based floral designer Shilpa Reddy will host remote wreath-making sessions throughout December, enabling us to create a stunning front door display in time for Christmas. Workshoppers will receive a comprehensive kit containing a wire wreath ring, sustainable and naturally scented decorations (think dried fruit, cinnamon sticks, conifer fronds, berries and pine cones), plus floristry wire. “We want people to keep their creative spirit burning during lockdown, so we’ve transformed our in-person workshops into webinar kits,” says Shilpa. We’ll get the mulled wine on!
This Swiss artist is known for his striking, snowy mountainscapes, which combine the ambience of the hyperreal and the concept of abstraction. Indeed, Godly works as a photographer alongside his painting practice and it’s this interplay of disciplines and shrewd attention to detail that proves fascinating in his work. This timely exhibition not only
offers a visually appealing wintry scene in the heart of Mayfair, but it also promises a moment of calm in the current madness. We can almost feel that restorative, fresh Alpine air. 30 Davies Street, W1K (020 3746 6830; jdmalat.com)

The Haunting of Alice Bowles
3 December-16 January, Hampstead Theatre After a devastating year for theatre, things are finally afoot. Hampstead Theatre has relaunched its open script submissions alongside its year-long writers’ group, Inspire. This coincides with a free multilingual youth theatre course. Further to that, live theatre is happening – albeit in a pared back fashion. Alice Hamilton’s 60th anniversary production of Pinter’s beloved one-act, two character play stars Alec Newman and Shane Zaza. Hamilton, says: “The past months have brought a strange new resonance to this classic and I’m excited to be exploring it now with these two brilliant actors.”

STYLING by MICHELLE ADDISON HAIR by TANYA BECKER MAKE-UP by NADIA HOECKLIN
T
o say that Antonia Thomas is excited to be appearing in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series is an understatement; it is, she confirms, a dream. “I have always been a huge fan of Steve’s work,” she tells me, enthusiastically. “His has been the name that I have been citing since I started working, as one of the directors that I would want to work with in an ideal career situation. Just the fact that his work does not shy away from honesty. It is brutally honest, but at the same time beautiful and artistic. And he is a black British voice. It was a conversation that I have had with my agents over the years: ‘If anything ever comes up with Steve McQueen, please can we try for it?’,” she explains. Academy Award, Bafta and Golden Globe-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen’s series of five individual films for the BBC is set between the late 1960s and the mid-1980s. Each film tells the true story of different members of London’s West Indian community whose lives have been shaped by their own force of will, despite rampant racism and discrimination. Though decades old, the stories are as timely now as ever, particularly in the light of events across the globe this year. “It’s funny, they are important stories about black British culture that always deserved to finally be told, and they would have been relevant. But obviously over the last six or seven months, with the terrible death of George Floyd, and the uptake of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the sudden public consciousness of it, it kind of couldn’t be more perfectly timed to have something like this coming out,” Antonia observes. She appears in the third film, Red, White and Blue, which tells the true story of Leroy Logan (played by John Boyega), a young forensic scientist with a yearning to do more than his solitary laboratory work. When he witnesses his father being assaulted by two policemen, he finds himself revisiting a childhood ambition to join the force – an ambition borne from the naïve hope of wanting to change racist attitudes from

within. “I play his wife Gretl, who, I propose, within the piece and their lives, just acts as a real support and a sounding board for Leroy,” Antonia says. “There are several junctures where he is faced with these decisions, and instead of putting him off, Gretl really supports him. Throughout his time in the police, all the ups and downs that he goes through, and that they are put through as a family, she steadfastly stands by him.” Having viewed an advance screener, Antonia is delighted with the outcome. “I think John is absolutely incredible in it, and it is everything that I hoped it would be,” she grins. “It is Steve McQueen all over. Just so beautiful in the artistic details and the stories are told clearly and cleanly; and the way that it pays homage to all of the cultural references – he really takes time to let the viewer understand. I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of this really, to be honest.” That she was able to be part of it is something Antonia will be forever grateful for. Having a recurring role as Dr Claire Browne in The Good Doctor, she spends up to half the year living in Canada, where the series is filmed. “This was a project that we had been hearing about for two or three years, but I had been in Vancouver across that time doing The Good Doctor, so when it finally sounded like it was going ahead, and casting began, I was just resigned to the fact that I wouldn’t even be able to audition, because of being here,” she explains. At the last minute, an opportunity arose for her to submit a self-tape. “I was filming 15 hour days and they were like, ‘Can you turn this tape around by British time 9am?’, so I had this tiny window, and almost wasn’t going to do it, because it felt impossible. Funnily, it was my make-up artist who was like ‘How much do you want to work with Steve McQueen?’ and I said, ‘Like it’s a dream’. And she was like, ‘Well get up at 5am and make the tape then, just do it’. So, I did. And it worked out. I am over the moon.”

INTERVIEW
Being on the other side of the Atlantic obviously raised scheduling issues, but nothing that couldn’t be worked around. “The Good Doctor guys, being extremely generous, helped me out. I mean I think they even slightly took me out of one of the storylines so that I could get over for the two weeks to film it,” she explains. “So, I’m exceptionally grateful to them, as well, for making that work for me.” With its fourth season now in production, The Good Doctor is another piece of work that Antonia is particularly proud of. “It has been an incredible journey for me, being able to step into the American side of the industry,” she tells me. “Up until the point of doing this, all of my work had been UK based. So, it was a huge move for me to come over to this side of the world and start filming an American series.” Not least because the role required her to speak with an accent. “As a British actor, you sort of feel like an American accent is one of the things you have got to have under your belt,” she tells me. “Growing up watching Hollywood films, it is a sound that we are familiar with. But it’s one thing thinking you can do an American accent, and another thing being in an American show, surrounded by Americans,” she laughs. She perfected Claire’s Stateside sound with help from an accent coach provided by the production team. “She was brilliant, and I would go through my scripts with her before filming. Now, four seasons in, I hope that it comes out easily. It feels much more natural. And it is just a part of the character.” As much as Antonia loves working on the show, being away from home for such long stretches is, she admits, difficult. “It definitely has its challenges,” she sighs. “The first couple of years it was really quite tough. Because it is such a long period of filming, so you are sort of living here. I would fly back and forward when I could – I would get chunks of days off around holidays and Thanksgiving and stuff, but yeah, it’s not easy. You miss family and friends dearly,” she explains. Throw in a global pandemic, and the logistics of splitting your life across two continents get even more complicated. “I don’t think I’ve been back for over a year,” she reveals. “I actually ended up locking down over here, because we had literally just finished filming the third series and I thought that I may as well stay in my apartment in Canada because the numbers were so much better here. I think, weirdly, COVID has taken the edge off the homesickness, because even if I were
in London, I wouldn’t be able to see my mum and dad,” she says, thoughtfully. “In a way, I feel more connected than ever through the pandemic. That has been the sort of silver lining for me, because we are all constantly on Zoom, or FaceTime, or whatever, keeping up with one another.” That’s not to say that she isn’t longing to come back. “I miss London so much,” she tells me. “Vancouver is a beautiful city, and I don’t want to do it down in any way, but I really miss the culture of London. I really miss the theatre and going to see live performances – music and theatre and dance. Hopefully it will be up and running again soon… The plan is to return home for Christmas, which will be nice. But I don’t know that I am going to be able to get out and about in London anyway, because I am going to be quarantining for Christmas and sort of seeing my family from a distance, and then coming back to Canada and quarantining here for two weeks, so it is going to be a bit of a weird trip, but I haven’t seen my family for so long that I really do need to go back.” While it might be weird, it is almost certain that Antonia will not be alone in celebrating this year's festivities in slightly unusual style. All of the Small Axe films are now available on the BBC iplayer. Seasons 1 and 2 of The Good Doctor are available on Now TV

Fabric recommends: Patrizia Manias
Patrizia Manias’ new Covent Garden salon brings a touch of Italian style to Central London
Italian hairdresser Patrizia Manias has picked a tricky time for her West End opening. Covent Garden is eerily empty when I visit shortly before the second lockdown. And I am the only client in the salon, which does have the advantage of making it feel extra exclusive and indulgent. Low lit and elegantly designed with dark marble counters and large floating mirrors, the space oozes Italian style. After settling me in a stylish orange leather seat, my stylist Giorgia offers me a small dish containing a divinely scented hot towel for my hands – it certainly beats alcohol gel. The vibe is more intimate cocktail bar than a hair salon; it’s 10am, and a little early for cocktails, but a cup of authentically strong Italian coffee is equally welcome and promptly served.
Originally from Milan, Patrizia and her team are known for their signature cutting style; I’m keen to see what the fuss is about. After a quick consultation to discuss what I’d like to achieve, I’m led to the wash station, where the reclining chair is exceedingly comfortable and the head massage outrageously good. The Philip Martin’s products smell gorgeous, too. The Patrizia Manias cut involves parting the hair into 14 sections, allowing for true precision. Though every cut is tailored to suit individual needs, face shape and personality, texture and volume are always introduced through the top sections, while the bottom sections are given a blunt cut to add a sense of weight to
the hairline. As she sets to work sectioning my hair in preparation to cut, it’s clear that I am in safe hands with Giorgia. She works quickly but precisely, and in no time is treating me to a spectacular blow dry. My hair has been transformed, and consequently my mood, too. Here’s hoping this month allows the salon to reopen and start attracting the business it deserves. LSJ Wash, cut and blow-dry from £80. 20-22 Shelton Street, WC2H (020 3474 5295; patriziamanias.com)

WELLBEING
On Trial: Renata Nunes I’ve been suffering from a general sense of malaise, a feeling of dissatisfaction… I’ve been getting stress headaches, not to mention achy shoulders from hunching over the laptop at the kitchen table. And I’m tired all
the time; struggling to fall asleep and then resetting my alarm rather than going for a run in the mornings. I’m generally feeling a bit meh, and I know I’m not alone in that. If ever there was a time for self-care it is now, but who to call?
Renata Nunes comes highly recommended. A rare and wonderful being, she is not only a qualified physiotherapist, but also an acupuncturist and massage therapist with over 20 years of experience. One session with her combines the
three therapies and promises multiple benefits. And best of all, she offers at-home treatments across London, even during lockdown (perfectly legitimately due to the fact that her physio qualification classifies her as a medical practitioner). We chat in some detail about my health and mental state and Renata is gentle and reassuring. She settles me on my bed to begin the treatment, first applying needles to various carefully selected points, then moving on to gloriously relaxing massage. She uses cups on my back, to help to relieve tension and improve circulation. All too soon an hour is over, and Renata gently rouses me. That night sleep comes more easily than it has done in months, and I wake feeling refreshed with a clear head, and shoulders that no longer niggle. It seems certain that I will need Renata’s magic in the coming months; indeed, she is now permanently on speed-dial. LSJ £150 for 60 minutes, £185 for 75 minutes and £225 for 90 minutes. Peace, love and Liberty One of the beautiful limited edition silk scarf designs

Earlier this year, while working in isolation at home, Liberty’s design director conceived a series of four hand painted designs symbolising love, loss, joy and happiness through the use of motifs and words from the Liberty archives. Gloriously eclectic, historic 18th century etchings clash with psychedelic artworks reminiscent of Carnaby Street in the 1960s in breathtaking designs that have now been incorporated into a series of limited-edition silk scarves. A diamond proposal If you’re planning to pop the question this Christmas, stop looking for the perfect ring. Allow your beloved to pick their own with jeweller Lottie Leigh’s RingVolution. The ultimate proposal package begins with choosing a fitting diamond with a little help from Charlotte – either in person, or over Zoom, as guidelines allow. At a Diamond Discovery Meeting you’ll learn about carat size, colour grades and clarity, and how different cuts can influence the stone’s character. Your chosen GIA certified diamond will then be presented in a jewellery box to be opened on the big day. After the proposal: design. Charlotte will work with you both to create a bespoke ring of dreams. Excitingly, your loved one will even get a model of the ring to try on, to ensure that it is absolutely perfect, before the final piece is created. That’s a big yes from us. Lottie Leigh offers a full range of bespoke jewellery options, as well as a remodelling service for unloved items, and jewellery gift vouchers are available. For details, see lottieleigh.com
the compelling artworks have even shaped the iconic store’s Christmas theme, with the illustrations used across the famous windows. Visual concept manager Lisa Clemenger says: “This Christmas needed to evoke emotion, strength and happiness… we wanted to share the emotion of these artworks with our community.” Each scarf design comes in a limited edition of just 100 pieces. £75 (libertylondon.com)

F
undamentally, women need to try things on. Fact.” Charlotte tells me when we sit down to chat about all things jewellery. “Sometimes we think we like the look of something, but when we put it on, we realise it is not right for us. We also change our minds – which, as they say, is a woman’s prerogative!” Charlotte explains that she came to this realisation after having problems with her own bespoke jewellery commissions. She knew that there had to be a better way of doing things. “Time has moved on, as has technology, and after retraining as a jewellery designer, I decided to look for a way of providing my clients with a service that would guarantee that their final pieces would exceed expectations.” Charlotte does this by incorporating Computer Aided Design (CAD) into the process, allowing clients to see a 3D image of their jewellery before it has been made. The next stage, to really ensure that everything is perfect, is printing a 3D model of the jewellery for the client to try on. “This is a crucial step in the process as it gives the client clarity as to what the final piece could look like,” she tells me. For really special pieces, such as engagement rings, Charlotte is able to take her design service one step further. “I make a replica of the piece in a non-precious metal and set it with cubic zirconias, in this way the client can wear it and check that it is comfortable before committing to having it made,” she explains. “This also removes the uncertainty for those wishing to choose a ring before proposing – if the intended really doesn’t like it, it’s possible to start again.”
Charlotte has also found the use of CAD to be incredibly useful when it comes to jewellery remodelling, another big part of the work she does. “It is terrible to think that there are pieces of jewellery containing diamonds and other precious gems that aren’t being worn,” she tells me. “There is nothing I love more than transforming a piece that is nice and turning it into something spectacular. CAD works really well in these jobs as I am able to 3D scan the existing stones and design a new piece based around them.” Of course, Charlotte’s work is not entirely reliant on CAD. “There is always a place for traditional goldsmithing methods, which I still incorporate into the process – but CAD is an excellent way of ensuring that the client has a say in every single detail. This process, together with working with the best industry craftsmen, means that clients end up with jewellery that they adore and can’t stop admiring!” she smiles. “After our homes and cars, jewellery is often our next biggest investment – so it should be absolutely perfect.” This year has seen Charlotte further adapting the way she works. “I haven’t let lockdown get in the way of designing fabulous jewellery,” she assures me. “Although I would rather see clients face to face, where this is not possible, I am able to work very effectively utilising Zoom and Royal Mail.” If you’d like to have a unique, bespoke piece of jewellery made, or to remodel an existing unworn piece, call Charlotte on 020 7112 8532 (lottieleigh.com; @lottieleighfinejewellery)

Eat out to really help out with StreetSmart
450 restaurants have agreed to take part – including campaign stalwarts Lemonia, Ottolenghi, Moro, Westerns Laundry and St. JOHN, as well as newcomers Orasay (pictured). Glenn Pougnet, CEO of StreetSmart says: “The support this year is humbling. So many restaurateurs are keen to do their bit even though times are so uncertain and obstacles keep being thrown at them. Their commitment means we can raise vital funds at a time when they’ll be needed most” Through adding a voluntary £1 to diners’ bills during the festive months, StreetSmart raises funds for charitable projects that help those living on the streets and in unsuitable accommodation. Last year’s campaign raised a whopping £760,000 (making the total raised since the charity launched in 1998 an incredible £10.3 million). Through the support of property industry charity LandAid, 100 per cent of donations go directly to beneficiaries including Glassdoor, the largest provider of open-access winter shelters and homeless support services in the country. Michelin-starred chef Clare Smyth of Core is also participating. She says: “StreetSmart is a fantastic charity helping so many vulnerable people, who need our support now more than ever. It is good to know that we can help those in need by simply donating £1 each time we dine out.”
It goes without saying that the Capital’s restaurants need our business more than ever, but should you need an extra incentive to get out and eat in the run up to Christmas, take note: this year’s StreetSmart campaign has just launched. Daylesford’s Ginger Millionaire Slice
MAKES 25-30 BITES
If this year has made you reassess your priorities and you’re hankering for a simpler, more handmade Christmas, say it with homecooked foodie gifts. We asked the folk at Daylesford for recipe inspiration and they’ve suggested these naughty but nice sweet treats, which will make just as good a gift to self if you can’t bring yourself to share! They say: “With a thick, lightly salted date caramel and a textured nutty base of almonds and ginger biscuits, this ginger millionaire slice is the perfect festive treat to have with a cup of tea or an ideal homemade gift when presented in a box or brown paper bag tied with string.” daylesford.com
INGREDIENTS
METHOD For the base, pulse the ginger biscuits in a food processor to small chunks. Add the remaining ingredients and lightly pulse until incorporated. Grease and line a brownie tin with baking parchment and pour in the mixture. Spread it around the tray and press into the edges until even and smooth, then place in the fridge to set. Place all of the ingredients for the caramel in a high-speed blender and blend until you have a thick, smooth paste.
To make the base: 250g ginger biscuits, crushed | 240g skinned almonds, roughly chopped | 50g shelled pistachios | 50g candied ginger | grated zest of 1 orange | 200g unsalted butter, melted To make the caramel: 250g pitted Medjool dates | 100g smooth almond butter | 1 tsp vanilla extract | 1 tsp ground ginger | pinch of ground cloves | 1/4 tsp sea salt | 100g unsalted butter To make the topping: 250g dark chocolate
AT HOME FEASTING
Unwrap the ultimate Christmas feast It seems guaranteed that we’ll be making compromises of some description this festive season. Guest lists might be limited, but we’re not going to let that stand in the way of the traditional merry making. And Monty Clevely of Full Monty Events has teamed up with chef Anna Humphreys to help on that front – they’ll be delivering Christmas in a box directly to the door, with a one-of-a-kind hamper bursting with top quality produce and oven-ready festive dishes. Think high-welfare free-range turkey, sourced from a small, family farm in West Horsley, handpicked vegetables from New Covent Garden

Remove the tray from the fridge and spread over your layer of caramel, using a palette knife dipped in hot water to smooth the top, returning the tray to the fridge once more. Melt the chocolate by placing it in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water (do not allow the base of the bowl to touch the water). Pour the melted chocolate over the caramel and return the tray to the fridge to set for 1-2 hours. Once set, cut into neat slices or chunks to serve or gift.

Seasonal settings This year may be a little quieter than Christmases past but we’re determined to keep up the traditions – not least when it comes to laying a beautiful festive table WORDS by ALI HOWARD
Don’t be afraid to move away from traditional colours when it comes to your Christmas table. All that’s needed is an additional bit of sparkle, in silver or gold, to turn your yearround favourite pieces festive. In the relaxed set-up below, Rockett St George’s rose pink and gold Champagne coupes are teamed with a muted, dusky pink linen tablecloth, while gold decorations and ditsy starburst fairy lights reflect the glassware’s metallic accents. This is a look that’s all about understated glamour, and while it’s largely contemporary in feel, it offers a nod to art deco elegance. £21.95 for a set of two
glasses (rockettstgeorge.co.uk)
No Christmas table is complete without a beautiful centrepiece to bring it all together. Think florals and candles for a traditional look, or borrow bright decorations from the tree to create sculptural interest that’s both quirky and contemporary. As part of the brand’s comprehensive festive home styling service, Kitten Grayson Flowers provides magnificent table decorations – as well as wild and whimsical large-scale installations.
In using dried flowers, the creations are both everlasting, adhering to Kitten Grayson’s commitment to sustainability, and they offer high fashion faded glamour. The full festive home styling service starts at £1,000 +VAT (kittengrayson. com)
The art of tablescaping is enjoying quite a moment and there’s no better time of year than Christmas to get creative with our crockery – alongside our glassware, cutlery, candles and found wintry foliage. A table decorated with sculptural layers in perfect symmetry is a wholly inviting one – and that’s before you’ve presented the roast goose. In the image on the next page, Burleigh’s Palisade and Hibiscus plates are stacked for textural interest, while the classic blue and cream colourway is echoed in the roses, glassware and candle holders. We love the addition of the blue velvet cutlery bows, elevating this table setting into a regal affair. Plates from £16 (burleigh.co.uk)
Napkin folding is a universe in itself – and that’s particularly pertinent when it comes to dressing the Christmas table. It’s one way to bring individual place settings to life, personalising our plates with a finishing flourish. ALISON CORK
This TV presenter, author and entrepreneur eats, sleeps and breathes interiors. Naturally, her London townhouse is a masterclass in quirky glamorous décor WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by RAHIL AHMAD
Can you tell us a little bit about the property itself? From the outside my home is fairly typical of central London – it’s a tall, midterrace late Georgian townhouse with sash windows. It used to be called Dolphin House when it was built and, amazingly, still has the original (extremely heavy) solid brass dolphin door knocker. Can you imagine, people have been using that to knock on the door for almost 200 years! Inside the house, the six floors are linked by a never ending wooden staircase with beautiful barley twist spindles. There are many original features including cornicing, tiled floors, old doors, fireplaces and even original wallpaper that must be 100 years old. I’ve kept all the period detail – it’s what gives the house its character.
61
How long have you lived here? We’ve been here now for 12 years. I absolutely love the neighbourhood, which is very central, but still a real community with local shops and people I see and chat to every day. The church opposite is a real plus as it is so beautiful to look at – one of the finest Victorian churches in London. Until recently we were a family of four – my husband and two sons, but my elder son has just started uni, so it feels just a little bit quiet at the moment. What are your non-negotiables when buying a home? A combination of location and potential. The former is essential for protecting the value of your investment – and in London that will be a significant investment. The latter is about putting your

stamp on a house. I simply couldn’t buy a turn key. Interiors for me are about creating a reflection of your personality, and that is unique. How important is character to you? Period features, a sense of history? I’ve always loved heritage and history. Sublime period architecture makes me go weak at the knees. I’m an absolute sucker for an English country house in a bucolic landscape. However, as time has gone on, I’ve also come to appreciate some modern architecture and I wouldn’t be averse to living in a modern home – so long as I had a period back up in the country! Parallel to this I’ve also developed a love of modern art. Maybe it’s to do with growing older.
Colourful and eclectic, Alison describes her interiors style as elegant, a bit quirky and with a strong hint of heritage
How would you describe your interiors style? I’ve focused a lot on colour. It is so evocative of mood and personality. Again, I couldn’t live in a monochrome house. That’s too one dimensional for me. I would say my style is elegant, a bit quirky and with a strong hint of heritage. You’ll find gold dodo tealight holders next to giant wire ‘ghost’ chandeliers in my house. furniture and I asked an artist friend to paint it flamingo pink gloss on the inside and gold on the outside, with a cartoon dalmatian for good measure. It gives me joy every time I walk past it, and surely that’s the best compliment one could pay to a piece of furniture! It’s also seen a fair few cracking parties. How did the look come about? It was a pent up explosion of creativity! We’d been renting for several years and I was desperate to have my own home. When we moved in I had a hundred and one ideas as to what to do with the house, and to be honest, it just all came out in one big creative splurge. I knew I wanted it to be luxurious, quirky, warm, personal and colourful, and I think it’s all of those things. I’m happy to mix new with old, expensive with skip finds, and I am a very spontaneous shopper – I know it when I see it.
Talk us through the use of colour and texture Every area has its own colour scheme – that may sound a bit of a dog’s dinner, but I think it works! The front door is a dramatic squid ink, to give a hint of what’s inside. The entrance hall is a slightly moody shade of stormy green-grey to complement one of my favourite paintings. The kitchen is bright white to maximise on space, while the sitting room is tarragon green with a gold wash, punctuated with pink and grape coloured velvets and lots of burnished gold. My bedroom is a murky lilac, which I’ve nicknamed slutty mauve! And the master bathroom is in cool greys and whites with a black rubber floor and toning wall mosaic. And lighting – how do you create a homely atmosphere? I love a bit of drama and so have a couple of standout chandeliers – one in the light well, which is a ‘ghost’ made of
white wire, and a more traditional 15 bulb crystal chandelier in the dining room. But I rely much more on side lights, candles (both LED and real) and other light sources such as the pre-lit mercury glass ornaments from my QVC range, which are lovely to look at beyond providing light. It’s all about soft light and mood lighting, as opposed to harsh overhead lights. All of my lights are on dimmers. Which interiors brands are your favourites? In truth, I’m not very brand-led. It’s more about character and fit. That said, I’ll always invest in a good sofa and highly rate Collins & Hayes. I also love Paint & Paper Library, the Design Centre, Chelsea Harbour is a constant inspiration, and shops like Nina Campbell and Joanna Wood always have something interesting. But you’d be missing out if you didn’t also take a look at the high street

interiors offerings from H&M and Primark – they’ve totally changed the affordable interiors landscape. What’s next for you and Alison at Home? There’s a lot on the horizon, I’m pleased to say in these challenging times. I love working on my Alison at Home range for QVC and am absolutely delighted to be launching in America in 2021. The thought of taking the aesthetic to QVC Stateside is really thrilling. My own online collection will also be growing next year, with a lot more garden furniture. And outside of interiors, I’m the Ambassador for the British Library Business & IP Centre and I’m passionate about promoting start-ups, never more important than now. I also run my not for profit Make it Your Business and we’re planning a national event next year for female-led businesses. Life is full! But you have to keep working at it. alisonathome.com

COMMENTS
From our agents...
Liberty Venn Founder of the Children’s Book Project
1. Toby Simmonds Dexters
“Notting Hill is world famous for its colourful houses. Here, one-bed apartments start from £600,000, and two to three beds from £800,000. Small mews houses typically sell from £1 million with three to four bedroomed mews houses selling from £3 million. Larger houses with five bedrooms or more start selling from £4 million.”
“My day usually starts with a run around Holland Park – I don’t go far because it’s a bit hilly, though there’s usually lots of distractions to alleviate the pain. Afterwards, I’ve earned a coffee. The best locally is from Fabrique Bakery on Portobello Road (and their cinnamon buns are insanely good). I get takeout and walk to Colville Square or back up towards Notting Hill Gate. Another favourite stroll is to Meanwhile Gardens, off Kensal Road. There’s a beautiful wilderness garden; many years ago our kids used to hunt for tadpoles in the pond there. A little further away, Wormwood Scrubs is great for a wander. The sky feels so big there, particularly
this summer when there were fewer people around. Come lunchtime, I regularly treat myself to Merguez and lentils from the final Moroccan stand on Golborne Road (outside Café O’Porto). For something a bit different, if you’re early enough to find a seat, Books for Cooks do a great value fixed lunch menu (I challenge you to leave without buying a cookbook). I spend a lot of time (in observational mode only!) at BAYSIXTY6 Skate Park under the Westway, and on those days I’ll grab lunch at the market. Shopping-wise, there’s nothing you can’t get locally: from bric a brac on Golborne Road to completely the other end
of the spectrum in the designer boutiques on Westbourne Grove. For books, I usually go to Lutyens & Rubinstein: the staff are incredibly friendly and know everything there is to know about their brilliant stock. Alternatively, a walk up to Daunt Books on Holland Park Road via Clarendon Road is always a treat. In the evening, you might find me tucking into The Cow’s pint of prawns or enjoying dinner at JOY at Portobello Dock.

“Selling property for a living as well as buying and renovating my first home has left me completely obsessed with interiors and home design. My favourite Notting Hill spot would have to be Golborne Road. I can spend hours wandering into the various antique stores, appreciating and slowly curating individual treasures to place into my home.”

“Interest levels are holding out with people still looking to take advantage of the stamp duty holiday. First time buyers and investors are particularly keen, helping to stimulate the rest of the market. Looking forward, although viewing levels may be lower, we do not anticipate any decrease in agreed sales; buyers are still highly motivated.”

Local heroes Authentic local eateries
While Notting Hill is renowned for its colourful houses and vibrant market, the area’s rich cultural heritage, and specifically its food offering, is embedded into the neighbourhood, says Chestertons’ Zara Wright. For the estate agent, a number of authentic local eateries deserve a shout out here. “Many small businesses continue to keep the area alive,” she says, “from Garcia’s Spanish market and Makan café, both located on Portobello Road, to Jay Dee’s Caribbean street food takeaway on Lancaster Road, and Persian restaurant Hafez on Hereford Road… all display the rich diversity of the area.”

“The eponymous film may have given this unique quarter of London global exposure and fame, but for locals there has always been nowhere quite like Notting Hill – and there’s nowhere quite like Ottolenghi,” says Rosy Khalastchy from Beauchamp Estates. “It’s always bright and fresh, in both appearance and taste! It’s one of my favourite foodie destinations, ever: always a pick-me up, whether eating in or taking home for a sumptuous supper.” With its delectable lunch menu and to-diefor daily cake selection, we couldn’t argue with that.
Say what?
This imposing Grade II listed former church is one of Notting Hill’s most iconic buildings. Now a much-loved cultural hub, it serves as an entertainment venue, art gallery, bar and kitchen, and even a music studio for local talent. Di Gong of Benham & Reeves tells us it has proved a lifeline for W11 residents, especially during the pandemic. “It’s a great place to relax and enjoy great food and drink,” he says, “and the garden courtyard is a real bonus, providing ample room for social distancing.” Here’s to seeing The Tabernacle back to full buzz soon.
The Notting Hill Carnival attracts crowds of 2 million plus, making it Europe’s largest street festival and 11 times the size of Glastonbury Festival. Annually it contributes around £93 million to the Capital’s economy – pretty impressive when you consider that the first carnival was organised by activist Rhaune Laslett in 1966 as a local fête to bring different cultures from the local community together. 69

THOUGHT
Peace of mind While the primary purpose of school might be the provision of an education, there is an increasing awareness that it is useful to cultivate a broader range of emotional skills during the formative years. This year, more than ever before, the mental health of our children has been at the forefront of our minds, but it isn’t a new issue. According to Young Minds, the UK’s leading children’s and young people’s mental health charity, 1 in 8 children have a diagnosable mental health disorder – that’s roughly 3 children in every classroom – and 1 in 3 adult mental health conditions relate directly to adverse childhood experiences. So how can positive early experiences help? There is now a wealth of research to show the links between mindfulness, stress reduction and positive psychological outcomes. Dr Amy Fancourt, Head of Psychology at Queen Anne’s School, Caversham, explains: “We know that a child’s brain is undergoing development and these developments continue well into adolescence. In practice, the changes happening in the adolescent brain mean that our teenagers experience heightened emotional responses but do not yet have the ability to regulate and control such powerful emotions.” The school use mindfulness practice to ensure that children are better able to reflect upon and begin to regulate these emotional responses, something that has been particularly helpful this year. “Pupils need a safe space in which they can pause, reflect and spend time learning how to respond to their emotions. Mindfulness training provides that safe psychological space in an otherwise hectic 24-hour digital world,” Amy concludes Richard Berlie, headteacher at St. Anthony’s Prep School for Boys agrees. “Our motto is that ‘happy children learn best’,” he explains. “To cultivate a love of learning children must first be confident and feel good about themselves. Being still in the moment allows for mental
“Pupils need a safe space in which they can pause, reflect and spend time learning how to respond to their emotions” and physical repose. The Catholic ethos of St Anthony’s allows for a spiritual enrichment quite distinct from most other schools. A schedule punctuated by time for quiet reflection helps fuel the busy-ness of the working day. Our boys are learning to see things in perspective and to distinguish the things that matter from those that don’t. So, in this way, they are being educated for life well beyond school.” As well as encouraging mindfulness, there are other ways to support your child’s mental health at home, too. The NHS Every Mind Matters service has these tips: Be there to listen Regularly ask how they’re doing so they get used

to talking about their feelings and know there’s always someone to listen if they want it. Support them through difficulties It’s not always easy when faced with challenging behaviour, but try to help them understand what they’re feeling and why. Stay involved in their life Showing interest in their life not only helps them value who they are, but also makes it easier for you to spot problems. Encourage their interests Being active or creative, learning new things and being a part of a team help connect us with others and are important ways we can all help our mental health. Take what they say seriously Listening to and valuing what they say, without judging, in turn makes them feel valued. A new era in education
In today’s uncertain landscape, online schooling offers stability and security for pupils, especially for those preparing to sit crucial exams
W
hile schools were forced to move their teaching online earlier this year, for some educators, the decision to do this has been made consciously, with the acknowledgement that this style of learning has its benefits. Online schooling can reach students wherever they are and give them the flexibility to fit learning around their lives. Personalising learning to individuals is incredibly powerful too – pupils can be stretched where possible and supported when
required. Students at a well-designed online school can thrive academically while developing the skills and mindset to become better independent learners. And the sector is expected to continue growing as more students discover the benefits and flexibility of online learning. Introducing Harrow School Online One new school choosing this style of education is Harrow School Online. The first of its kind, it is a fully online sixth form offering a world leading independent British education. It brings together
the heritage of a Harrow School education with leading online learning technology and teaching practices. Careful design has gone in to how to make the most of the online delivery, and the school opened its virtual doors to the first cohort of A-level pupils in September 2020. Online education done well can be as effective as classroom-based teaching. Every environment has its advantages, and virtual schooling should be organised to make the most of its innate strengths. Flipping the classroom Online teaching works particularly effectively with a ‘flipped classroom’ teaching methodology, something students can expect from Harrow School Online. This involves students working through interactive self-study materials to develop an understanding of subject content, and then having targeted lessons in a virtual classroom where teachers explore
their understanding of that material. Class sizes are small – a maximum of ten pupils – so teachers get to know their pupils well. Lessons are interactive and teachers use tools like polling, interactive whiteboards, and break out rooms where pupils work with their peers. Providing pastoral care When staff and pupils are physically distant from one another, pastoral care is especially important. Harrow School Online ensures that all pupils are safe and happy through regular meetings with a Success Coach, and a house system forms the backbone of the school community, providing an opportunity for peer support. The school’s Success Coach, Dale Krause, has 20 years’ experience of supporting high-achieving pupils and co-ordinating support for pupils who require additional assistance. “From day one I coach pupils on university selection and
provide tailored career planning,” he explains. “In one-to-one coaching sessions and small group workshops I provide students with guidance on how to become effective independent learners.” Principal Heather Rhodes (above) adds: “Harrow School Online offers a unique opportunity for bright girls and boys to develop their shared love of learning in a carefully designed, globally connected school. The school is setting out to revolutionise education. We’d love you to join us.” Harrow School Online runs virtual events throughout the school year for prospective families to access the information and resources they need in order to make an informed decision about applying to the school. Pet appeal If we were a nation of dog lovers pre-pandemic, 2020 saw our canine obsession go through the kennel roof. But where many homeowners across the Capital
indulged in a new puppy or kitten during lockdown, some city-dwellers – namely an army of renters – felt left out. Online searches for pet-friendly rental properties have seen the highest level since records began in 2004, while research by the Dogs Trust found that a whopping 78 per cent of pet owners have experienced difficulty finding a pet-friendly rental. Indeed, house-hunting dog lovers can take up to seven times longer to rent a home. Enter Lets with Pets, a site that, reassuringly, finds willing landlords and letting agents for those with four-legged family members we simply cannot live without. How has the pandemic changed our property priorities?
Glentree Years in the business? 23 I love London because… it’s my hometown and it’s the most vibrant and exciting city in the world. First London home? A one-bed Edwardian apartment in Finchley, which I transformed into a two-bed bachelor pad!
If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… a food critic. I definitely have the palate and appetite to match. Favourite London street? Hoop Lane in Golders Green, the home to Glentree, of course! Favourite shops/ eateries? Selfridges and Harrods for some retail therapy, followed by a ribeye and a glass
Your home, your life
of Malbec at Goodman. Favourite place to grab a coffee? My friend Amin at Medi on Golders Green Road serves up the best coffee and cannoli in London. What’s your hidden talent? Making perfect paper aeroplanes for my two boys, Sam and Rafi. Period property or new-build?
Simon Hedley, Druce
Period for the character and new-build for the design. Take one person, dead, alive or fictional, out in London – who and where? John Lennon for a session at the Abbey Road studios. Aliens attack – which London landmark would you save? Big Ben, as I named my first – and last – goldfish after it.

One noticeable trend is that people do enjoy outdoor space. For so long, buyers have assumed that in areas like W1, that’s almost impossible. But it is possible to find little gems. One great example is a duplex we’re selling on Marylebone High Street. It has a magnificent roof terrace, giving 360 degree views from the centre of Marylebone. Another trend is home improvement. If you’re looking for a project to pass the time during COVID-19, we have a penthouse of over 2,400 sq ft. Subject to permission, you could build a huge terrace on the flat roof.
