Taormina, Sicily B E L M O N D G R A N D H OT E L T I M E O, B E L M O N D V I L L A S A N T ’A N D R E A f you’ve ever found a place so completely devoid of charm, beauty or plain old ‘stuff to do’, I’d put it to you that Taormina got that poor province’s share. When God or, erm, UNESCO was doling out tourist attractions, this mountainside Sicilian town definitely landed more than its quota. Honestly, its creds read like a ‘dream Italian holiday’ checklist. Beautiful scenery? Check. Specifically, sea views, sweeping valleys, terraced gardens and winding coastal roads? Check. History? Check. Ancient history? Check; a medieval town and BC-built amphitheatre. Natural history? Check; right next to Etna. Celebrity guest list? Check; beloved of everyone from Goethe and Churchill to Elton John. Lively town? Check. Fabulous food? Check (this is Sicily). Beach access? Check. Beach weather? Check. Luxury hotels? Check and check.

It is, of course, unsurprising that blessed Taormina is Sicily’s top tourist spot. People come here. Lots. But while the fringes of high season take the heat off madding crowd control, if you’re safe in the haven of an incredible hotel, it could be Sicilian mafia vs. Roman Legion outside and you wouldn’t worry. I find my five-star sanctuary, first, in the Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo. In the midst of Taormina proper, practically in the Greek Theatre, its very walls ooze Golden Age glamour. It also lays claim to the single most spectacular view this side of Olympus. And the other side. This remarkable panorama along the coast to smouldering Etna beautifies every outlook from the Baroque-style hotel – from the balcony of my deluxe double to each poolside lounger, garden hideaway and terrace table. My two-day stint at the Timeo is mostly spent lapping up this vision of Italian perfection from these vantage points – usually with a glass in hand. There are trips to town, in which I find charming lace shops, cool little bars, endless antipasto plates and five-euro litres of wine, but I’m also perfectly placed to pop back for a swim, siesta or aimless sit. And you’ll forgive me if I choose not to take dinner in one of Taormina’s many lovely restaurants – not when the Timeo’s has that view, and traditional Sicilian-meets-modernMediterranean dishes like blue potato gnocchi with clams, wafer-thin grilled Sicilian beef and fish so fresh you probably saw it swimming at lunchtime. Plus naughty desserts. Plus a serious cheeseboard. PLUS a rather good wine list. Oh, and they do a fine line on breakfast, too – enjoyed, again, on the terrace, in the sunshine, dropping poached eggs down my dress, being too occupied by the scenery to effectively eat. The thing, though, with looking lovingly at the sea all day is that you develop a hankering to get in it. Which is why it’s clever that blessed Taormina’s blessed Timeo also has a seafront sister: the Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea, a former aristocratic family home set in subtropical gardens, with its own private beach. Guests of either enjoy free shuttles between hotels, but I’m staying over for a holiday from my holiday. Because, despite being ten minutes apart, and in equally exquisite surrounds, there is an atmospheric shift. Where Timeo is grand down to its very name, Sant’Andrea has a smart seaside vibe – a little more ‘white linen’ – encouraging even more time spent lounging by the pool, and even more time sitting aimlessly with glass. From here you can take boat trips
Honestly, this mountainside Sicilian town’s creds read like a ‘dream Italian holiday’ checklist
out to the grottos that dot the coast, snorkelling as you go, or simply lie on the beach with a cocktail, swanning in and out of the sea – which I duly do. There is more swanning to be done in my vast suite, complete with sunny terrace practically in the sea, and then, lo, it’s dinner time again, this with stunning views over the Calabrian Coast from Sant’Andrea’s Restaurant Oliviero. This proves as fine a dining experience as its hilltop sister – utter bliss from aperitif to pud – but, being that bit closer to the sea, my fresh fish may still have been swimming circa sundown. Di colpo, after a last beautiful breakfast of dribbled eggs, my Italian idyll is over. I’ve felt like Caesar himself (less assassination inconvenience), seen so much beauty my eyes are quite ruined, and basically taken two trips in one. I guess when God or, like, Mrs Smith was doling out holidays, I scored far more than my quota, too. CG

Celebrated Swiss chef Daniel Humm is coming home to Zurich later this month, when he will hold an exciting residency at Baur au Lac. Daniel, who earned his first Michelin star at the age of just 24, spent some of
his formative years cooking at the hotel, before moving on to New York. He is now chef and owner of The NoMad Restaurant and Bar at The NoMad Hotel, and the three Michelinstarred Eleven Madison Park. He describes his award-winning fare as having been inspired by his roots, with an emphasis on simplicity and purity, so this homecoming is fitting. On 28 September he will treat passersby in the city centre with the launch of his famous ‘Humm Dog’, and from 29 September to 3 October he will present a special 12-course menu to guests at the hotel’s Pavilion restaurant.
