Get set to sparkle

Liz Skone James, Editor

After presents come parties; if you’ve finished your Christmas shopping, you can now concentrate on the fun bits. With that in mind, our focus this issue is on festive fashions, from a gorgeous Studio 54-themed shoot to tempt you away from the usual little black dress options, to make-up and quick fix beauty solutions that will ensure you spend more time partying than preparing to party. And our Lust List focuses on dressing the tree, with a round up of the best baubles known to branches. For those of you who haven’t quite finished the Christmas prep, we’ve also included a few last minute present and food ideas. And, of course, we’ve rounded up the best things to do in the Capital this month – not all of them Christmassy, if that’s not your thing… That’s us done for the year; see you for a fresh start in January.

What to see and do this month | words by Ali Howard

MUSICAL

Caroline, or Change

Until 6 April | Playhouse Theatre Following a sell-out run at Hampstead, this infectiously joyous musical sees its welldeserved West End transfer. Indeed, it brags impressive credentials: the Olivier award-winning musical, written by Tony Kushner (Angels in America) with an inspirational score from Tony award-winner Jeanine Tesori, gives protagonist Sharon D. Clarke a platform on which to shine from the soul. Set in 1963 Louisiana, with revolution in the air, a poorly paid maid toils endlessly in the sweltering basement of the Gellman household. But with the power of a few extra dollars in her pocket, possibility beckons. Not to be missed. Northumberland Avenue, WC2 (0844 871 7631; carolineorchange.co.uk)

CABARET

A Gatsby Christmas

Until 22 December | Bloomsbury Ballroom While we’re yet to ring in the roaring ’20s (mark two), 2019 is just around the corner and that’s reason enough to celebrate. The London Cabaret Club knows how to throw one heck of a lavish party and this glitzy affair looks set to outdo even their impossibly glamorous standards. Expect a magical winter wonderland – West Egg style – filled with glittering gold and feathers, along with aerial artists, gangsters and molls, and more Champagne than you can shake a cocktail stick at. Of course, the club is fully immersive with the Capital’s most beautiful there as much to be seen as to see. You’d be wise to take a leaf out of Daisy Buchanan’s book and dress to dazzle.

EXHIBITION

Vincent Darré

Until 5 January | 18 Davies Street Gallery Where furniture meets sculpture, this is a fascinating snoop into Vincent Darré’s creative mind as he reimagines his luxurious Parisian home in the heart of Mayfair. The self-proclaimed dandy designed for Yves Saint Laurent, Prada and Fendi before launching his career as a creator of furniture and decorative objects. Here, we’ll see Darré at his most daring, with pieces including a gilded blown-glass dragonfly lamp and a flamboyant bronze velour couch. “The moment I accepted the gallery’s invitation,” he says, “I imagined the trip as a permanent relocation. In a flash, the concept was born: a duplex in London with my office and living room to greet my friends. From Christmasthemed walking tours, holiday magic at Winter Wonderland and festive family activities, there’s something for everyone. Be sure to look beyond Central London. In Richmond, Bushy and Greenwich Parks you can buy a Christmas tree, or take a festive horsedrawn carriage ride every weekend, starting 24 November in Richmond Park.

Small Is Beautiful XXXVI

Until 5 January | Flowers Gallery For the love of little things, this popular exhibition celebrates the art world’s diminutive works and invites collectors on a budget to purchase more affordable, bite-sized pieces. Dating back to 1974, it is now in its 36th edition. This year’s highlights include works by the late British painter Jack Smith, who represented Britain in the Venice Biennale in 1956; Derek Boshier, renowned for his contributions to British Pop Art in the 1960s; and London artist Nathan Cohen, whose intricate paintings play on optical illusion and colourful eye-popping geometrics. 21 Cork Street, W1S

Robin Ince: Nine Lessons and Carols for Curious People

14, 15, 19, 20 December | Kings Place While there are full-on festivities (and rightly so) at Kings Place this silly season, there’s also a series of events billed for those running and screaming in the opposite direction. If you’re more Ebenezer than Elf, you’ll appreciate Robin Ince’s merry mix of science, songs and comedy across four special performances. Fans of Ince’s podcast The Infinite Monkey Cage, which he co-hosts with Professor Brian Cox, will be well versed on the comedian’s unique take on life, the universe and everything. Expect an otherworldly line-up of special guests, too, from the realms of physics and poetry, music and of course, stand-up. Timothy Ginn ©Trunkman Productions

STYLE& WELLBEING

Style& wellbeing Workouts for wrinkles When was the last time you properly exercised the 40-plus muscles in your face (and did you even realise there were that many)? Don’t wait for New Year’s resolutions, while you’re putting on your party face, now’s the time to put your skin through some drill sessions. Taking New York and London by storm, FaceGym is the first ever gym studio for the face, and it has found a brand new home right on our doorstep in St. John’s Wood. The sleek new studio follows the same formula as the existing sites on the King’s Road and in Selfridges, offering an effective alternative to invasive treatments. A workout for the face, from warm up to cardio, sculpting to cool down, signature muscle manipulation techniques are combined with hi-tech tools to lift, sculpt, tone and tighten. And the results are immediately visible. So, whether you’re preparing for a big event, or trying to eliminate the evidence of too many late nights, FaceGym couldn’t have come to north London at a better time. 41 St. John’s Wood High Street, NW8 (020 7586 5568; facegym.com)

We love: Aveda Speed of Light Blow Dry Accelerator

Bookmark this: bombpetite.com

Want to cut your party prep time, or hit an extra snooze on your morning alarm? We bring utterly life-enhancing news. And no, we’re not exaggerating, even slightly. Brand new to Aveda, Speed of Light is a revolutionary primer that promises to reduce blow dry time by half. The silicone-free formula uses lactic acid from sugar beets to lower the pH of hair – a higher pH has been found to swell the hair shaft, leading to frizz and tangling. The formula also helps to seal the cuticle which separates the hair strands, increasing airflow around them and resulting in speedier styling, not to mention leaving hair smooth, soft and static-free. Blow dry bliss. £21 (aveda.co.uk)

Finding fashion that fits can be a problem, particularly for those not blessed in the height department. But fashion insider Jenny Liu wants to change that: Bomb Petite started life as an online destination for petite style advice and inspiration. An in-house capsule collection followed, and now Jenny is offering a bespoke service, just in time for party season. Whether you’re looking to emulate a look you’ve seen on the catwalk or create something personal from a special piece of fabric, Jenny can create a made-to-measure piece to your own very unique requirements. The process takes around four weeks and involves three or four face-to-face consultations with Jenny. Prepare for your moment in the spotlight… Prices from £595, not including fabric

Psst…

We love: The Cake Studio If you haven’t made your Christmas cake by now, you’ve probably missed the boat, but that doesn’t mean it’s too late for a slice of festive flavour… This year we’re eschewing the traditional fruitcake for a gorgeous creation by local baker Victoria Finkel of The Cake Studio. Victoria uses delicate Korean buttercream to create exquisite works of art, and her Christmas designs look seriously too good to eat (but do, we urge you, her signature honey cake is the best we’ve ever eaten). And if you still like the idea of creating your own, Victoria offers one-to-one classes and group workshops in professional cake decorating. Prices from £80 for a small cake, and £200 for a one-day group class. For more details, see thecakestudio.co

Who says you have to break up your festive shopping with lunch eaten on the go? Since opening in Selfridges late last month, Brasserie of Light is here to save us from sandwiches. The latest in the Caprice Holdings folio, it offers all-day dining in a chic, Art Deco styled setting. The dramatic space, created in consultation with renowned architect Martin Brudnizki, is bold, colourful and light-filled, with a staggering 24ft by 30ft crystal encrusted statue by Damien Hirst at its centre. With a kitchen headed up by Emanuel Machado (formerly of Balthazar), the menu offers an eclectic mix of classic British and internationally inspired dishes throughout the day, and brunch at weekends; while the bar offers a classic cocktail selection. To say we’re excited is an understatement. Selfridges, 400 Oxford Street, W1A (020 3940 9600; brasserie-of-light. co.uk)

LO N D O N F O O D I E

Joel Gazdar Executive chef Wild Food Café

When I was a child I wanted to be… a stunt man, briefly, and then an architect. But I came to the realisation that my real interest was in how the internal architecture of our bodies interconnects with our external environment. My kitchen hero is… my Parsi grandma, who has left me with some incredible food memories. In particular her fragrant chicken tikka and Indian fish cutlets. Even though I am vegan, I have been able to integrate her flavours into many dishes.

H OT TA B L E

Flat Iron, King’s Cross I’m married to a man who is unmoved by the vegan movement. He’s the old-fashioned type for whom a meal is not a meal without meat: give him steak and he’s very happy indeed. It means we’re intimately familiar with the Capital’s various steak joints, but curiously we have never eaten at Flat Iron. Upon hearing the news that the restaurant is opening in north London, we feel this should be rectified. The 110-cover site on Caledonian Road is the sixth for Charlie Carroll, the self-taught butcher who launched his first pop-up back in 2012. But though the capacity may be large, the restaurant feels welcoming and intimate on a busy Saturday evening; with tables arranged in such a way that they do not feel crowded in. The aesthetic is dark wood, exposed brick walls and industrial light fittings, set against neon slogan lights and plenty of leafy greenery. We order a DIY Bloody Mary box, which comes packed with bottles of house-made chestnut smoked vodka, beef tea, freshly grated horseradish root, and classic Bloody Mary spices to be mixed into tomato juice. It’s a fun way to start the meal, and the perfect accompaniment to the beef dripping popcorn that arrives to whet our appetites. To eat, we both opt for the eponymous Flat Iron steaks – a feather blade cut that Charlie has championed – with fries cooked in Wagyu fat (a new addition to the menu) and creamed spinach. Everything is exquisite; the steak in particular is tender, richly flavoured and wonderfully juicy. The quality is quite unbelievable, given its £11 price tag. We can see ice cream being made to order on the frozen marble slabs at the centre of the restaurant, and decide it would be churlish not to order some. Like the Bloody Mary, it’s a DIY affair, coming with a tray of Madagascan vanilla Chantilly cream, Amarena cherry syrup, and shavings of Congolese Cru Virunga chocolate. We drizzle and sprinkle to our hearts content. It is a winning formula and we will almost certainly be back. Welcome to the neighbourhood, Flat Iron. LSJ 47–51 Caledonian Road, N1 (flatironsteak.co.uk)

My fail-safe dinner party menu is… fresh, local fruit as a starter, or a green juice cocktail. Followed by a roast heritage squash; served with freshly blended sprouted chickpea hummus; a seasonal pesto of green leaves; quinoa flatbreads; a big seasonal salad; marinated artichoke hearts and some onion sautéed with wild mushrooms. I’d finish with a lush creamy cacao drink for dessert. Though usually it’s my incredible wife and business partner who creates this sort of seasonal sharing feast. My favourite London restaurant… is PickyWops, the vegan pizza place. My ultimate London day consists of… a sunrise walk on the Heath with my beloved. Or a picnic there with friends. Then we’d head off for an adventure in town, perhaps going to Porchester Spa (the oldest public bath house in London) for a good steam and a cold plunge. TRAVEL NEWS

Travel news Safari, so good... Who says a weekend break should be focused on city sightseeing? Certainly not the Hemingways Collection, who have just launched their ‘Safari for the Weekend’ package. As madcap as it sounds, thanks to a manageable time difference and some well-timed British Airways flights, you can fly out on a Friday and be back at your desk, full of tales of Kenyan adventure, on Tuesday morning. Start the weekend with a night of luxury in Hemingways Nairobi, before flying 45 minutes west over the vast African plains to the heart of the Mara Naboisho Conservancy, home to Ol Seki Hemingways Mara. A private enclave of just 10 luxury safari tents, with breathtaking views, unforgettable wildlife and the warmest Kenyan hospitality, it offers the most memorable of safari experiences. With one of the highest densities of lions in Africa, as well as an impressive population of giraffe and elephant; Naboisho is the ideal place to tick off the big five on a limited schedule. As well as daily game drives, horseback safaris, guided wilderness walks and community visits are all on offer. On the final day, you’ll return to Nairobi, where you can treat yourself to a relaxing swim, spa treatment and a delicious three course meal at the hotel, before making your way to the airport for the flight home. The three night package costs from $2,375 (approx £1,827) per person (hemingways-collection.com)

Peak performance Looking to slope off somewhere special this season? Chalet Fourmiliere is a longstanding favourite in Morzine. Now under new ownership, it has just reopened following an exquisite refurb. The Chalet offers 3,500 sq ft of accommodation, including a stunning double height dining room, relaxing mezzanine library, cosy sitting room with comfy sofas and a fabulous open fire, a games room with pool table, and six luxuriously decorated en suite bedrooms. Along with daily housekeeping, lucky guests enjoy the services of a professional chef six days a week, an all-inclusive drinks

service (including that all-important Champagne), a 24-hour concierge and an in-resort driver. But perhaps our favourite bit is the in-house perfumer, who has created a range of signature toiletries and scented candles – there’s not many places can boast the same. All that, and you’re smack bang in the middle of some of the best skiing the French Alps has to offer. Or, if skiing’s not for you, why not try ski jeering, paragliding, speed riding, ski touring, snowshoeing or snowmobiling. Or simply choose to divide your time between the Chalet’s hot tub and treatment room. Decisions, decisions… Prices from €13,200 per night for exclusive use (chaletfourmiliere.com)

REVIEW

Room with a view Looking for the ultimate getaway? Discover a unique coastal escape, where the minimalist interiors are as starkly captivating as the views. Dungeness, on Kent’s coast, may just be paradise on earth WO R DS KATI E HUTL E Y

T

here aren’t many views that could absorb me so completely as to prevent me picking up a muchanticipated book (Transcription by Kate Atkinson, since you ask), but I am transfixed. The majestic swoop of birds buffeted by air currents, the otherworldly lunar landscape feel and – on the day I arrive – the autumn sun warming the crisp blue skies, all leave me breathtaken. “Where is this paradise on earth?”, I hear you cry, “I must book a flight immediately!”. Friends, I am the bearer of good, if unlikely, news: this place is Dungeness on the Kent coast, of nuclear power station fame, and just an hour and a half’s drive from London. Let us backtrack. I am staying in the Fog Signal Building, one of a handful of what have become iconic RIBA award-winning homes, converted from their original purpose, dotted along this coastline – the largest stretch of shingle in Europe, and home to one third of all of Britain’s plant species as well as rare waterbirds. The property is a work of art. Never having been one of the minimalist bent, I didn’t expect to fall so utterly in love, but that just goes to show why Fiona Naylor is an extremely talented architect and I am not. The simplicity (haute luxe simplicity, of course) of the interior is the perfect frame for the outdoors, which, in this setting, is all-encompassing. It is hard to describe what exactly it is about Dungeness that I found so bewitching; perhaps, after a long, hot, stressful summer, it was simply the degree of solitude on offer? But I am not alone: famously, Derek Jarman, the seminal arthouse film-maker, kept a house (and

Above: a former foghorn testing station, the building comes complete with steel tower Right: inside, modern furniture complements industrial design

its much admired garden) here, and, following my visit and the somewhat gushing posting online of my photos, it turns out all the people with the best taste have been in on the secret for years. Surprised, well into the autumn, to find the weather so glorious, I immediately dump my bags and head out for a run, following the line of the beach, passing lighthouses, a small art gallery and The Snack Shack, where visitors are tucking into a tempting array of fisherman’s rolls and the like, heading up to nosey around Derek Jarman’s garden (while keeping a respectful distance), all the while with the power station thrumming in the backdrop. It is surreal. It is exhilarating. After a soak in the Japanese ‘onsen’ inspired wooden bath, the rest of the day is passed with the doors flung wide open, breathing in the salty air, and with my book eschewed for a podcast, just… looking. Feeling lucky to be alive. “This is my absolutely perfect day,” I think, “and I don’t want it to end.” But end it must. After a deep, uninterrupted sleep, the weather the next day is more what I was expecting; moody, glowering, heavy. More perfection. I drive back to London, all the while plotting my return and pining for my new Favourite Place On Earth.

On design

Fewer, Better Things, £20 (bloomsbury.com)

Just like honey

Design leap Artisans of Devizes have added inspired new colourways to their Lily Pad collection. The encaustic cement tiles, hexagonal in shape, offer more than a hint of Deco elegance, whether arranged in a star-like pattern underfoot, or set in dazzling diamonds on a feature wall. In Eden, Plum, or Blush Rose – three muted shades informed by Mother Nature – their glory is in their beautifully understated glamour. £3.96 per tile (artisansofdevizes.com)

Continuing the soft metals trend, London lighting brand Pooky release the Beehive, a sculptural pendant whose subtlety is its strength. Created from fine sheets of hammered brass and riveted at the seams, the shade has the unlikely appearance of delicate gold satin stitched together. Whether as a stand-alone statement or twinned for effect, it omits a warming glow that puts paid to the starkness of its industrial predecessors. £170 (pooky.com)

Ahead of the curve Named after the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, whose 1951 build Casa das Canoas created buzz with its curves, this refined new edition of the Niemeyer chair comes in beautifully natural pure wool and oak. The statement piece may be a woolly hug in an armchair but its strong modernist lines compensate the cosy – and therein lies its design triumph. £2,500 +VAT (insidherland.com)

Think pink If Wes Anderson did kitchen design... The Rise collection is a delectable collaboration between John Lewis of Hungerford and London interior designers 2LG Studio. Bespoke curved cabinetry rebelliously toys with the notion of negative space while the use of fluted glass throws back to the larder doors of the 1950s; add to that futuristic strip lighting, striking symmetry and a curated colour palette of ice cream shades and the result is positively dream-like. On repeat There’s a new mood in wallcoverings and soft furnishings for autumn/winter. An appetite for bold prints and daring colourways replaces neutral schemes, while Mid-century-inspired motifs add retro charm. When it comes to pattern and print this season, fortune favours the brave

58

fabricmagazine.co.uk

SCREEN PRINTED As patterned carpets are enjoying a renaissance, film buffs with an eye for design can take the woven geometrics trend a step further (if they dare). Lifted from Stanley Kubrick’s seminal horror The Shining, Film and Furniture presents an officially licensed reproduction of David Hicks’ iconic carpet, which contributed hugely to the movie’s disquieting visual style. The custom-made hand-tufted rug features a maze of interlocking hexagonals in red, orange and brown – just like those in the corridors of the Overlook Hotel – and is a thing of modernist beauty, even if it may strike fear into the hearts of your house guests. Approx £2,500 (filmandfurniture.com)

INTERIORS

GRAPHIC DESIGN The name Donna Wilson is synonymous with bold geometric pattern. The designer’s long-running residency at SCP cements her as our go-to for cushions, pouffes and throws with a cool, Midcentury aesthetic. In her newest textile collection for the brand, the Field Day cushion in Black Forest is charmingly retro but unmistakably contemporary in today’s craft-driven context. Made with 100 per cent single-ply wool, and using a traditional double-cloth weaving technique, the cushion is inspired by nature, featuring abstract tree motifs and graphic criss-crossing lines with a palette of muted forest greens on black. Just right for cosy winter nights in. £75 (scp.co.uk)

LOUNGE DELUXE With its clean, elegant lines, tubular skilegs and luxuriously wide form, Content by Terence Conran’s Aspen armchair pays homage to the laid-back glamour of the 1970s lounge chair. Upholstered in Romo’s Nesma Briar Rose, its Mid-century design roots are palpable. The jacquard weave fabric is, in fact, influenced by the textiles of the Navajo. Its chevron stripes intricately zig-zag together to create an optical illusion, giving the fabric a threedimensional effect that belies the chair’s modernist dimensions, while its soft colour palette of dusky pink and grey keeps it contemporary. It is the very definition of a statement piece. From £1,379 (contentbyterenceconran.com)

TUBE CUBES A nostalgic take on Mid-century styling, particularly for us Londoners, the London Transport Museum has released their Moquette collection of hinged storage cubes upholstered in some very familiar fabrics. Originally mass produced for heavy use on the Capital’s tubes and buses, the material, predominately wool in makeup, dates back to the 1920s and will be instantly recognisable to seasoned commuters. Whether the blue and white dotted diamonds of Victoria Line; the orange and brown stacked rectangles of District; or the tartan-like lines of Routemaster, these funky geometrics are highly covetable, and an enchanting take-home of London’s transport history. £314.99 (ltmuseumshop.co.uk)

EYE-POPPING PAPER MINDTHEGAP’s Eyes and Circles wallpaper throws back to ’60s pop art and forms part of a comprehensive collection of bold wallcoverings suited to the most daring décor. Made with FSC grade substrate from sustainable and managed forests, and surface printed with eco-friendly inks, this dotty design is green in more ways than one. As its Mary Quant-like eyes follow you around the room, a deconstructed repeat pattern of full-, quarter- and semicircles makes it instantly iconic. Paper a feature wall for big impact and it’ll make the perfect backdrop to that Mid-century sideboard you’ve got your eye on. £150 per box of three rolls/£32.26 per sq m (banbayu.com) fabricmagazine.co.uk

surveyors and designers, can make it happen. From securing planning through to handing over the keys, their comprehensive service gives buyers the framework to see their perfect home become a reality. John Pope, Director of Octagon’s Bespoke team, comments: “As the temperature drops outside, some choose to spend the evening in front of the TV, whilst others are busy hosting extravagant Christmas parties. Through our Bespoke service, we can add the personal touches that elevate any home into something truly special, whatever the occasion. “In recent projects, we have installed swimming pools whereby the cover doubles up as a ballroom dancefloor with the click of a switch, and dedicated cinema rooms with private bars and cigar rooms. There are few limits to what our Bespoke team can deliver, promising truly memorable future Christmases for both our clients and their guests.” Octagon’s Bespoke service has expanded over the past couple of years, with high demand tripling the number of projects undertaken. Not only working on new builds, the team also complete extensions to satisfy those looking to improve, not move. So, whether you

Lighting is hugely important to the success of the interior. Each room has been individually considered What’s changed? We refurbished the property from a two-bed, one-bathroom flat into a three-bed, three-bathroom property with two open courtyard spaces. We took the entire apartment back to a shell and went about altering the structure of the entire building to create a layout that easily flowed from front to back, rather than the inefficient carved-up layout of the original configuration. That sounds like a lot of structural work Yes! We lowered the floors to create better floorto-ceiling heights and integrated three redundant vaults into the layout to provide a cloakroom and an additional bedroom with curved ceilings. We also removed the rear wall to create full-height sliding doors to the master bedroom, whilst extending the apartment to create a new living space, also with fullheight doors opening into the timber-lined courtyard. 64

fabricmagazine.co.uk

When were you able to move in? We’ve owned the property for around four years but moved in 18 months ago, following the refurbishment. This is the family home, which I share with my wife Jess, Ralphie (3) and Bertie (4 months) – I also have two older boys, Alex and Benjy, who frequently come and stay – and not to mention Mr. Purrkins the family cat. Can you describe the success of the new design? It’s transformed the space into a fluid layout, which has a generosity of space – liberated from the previous small rooms by removing structural walls to provide a flexibility that embraces its length. The interior adopts clean lines with exposed brick and an abundance of timber floors, walls and ceilings to provide warmth, a softness to the space and a common thematic palette. How have you maximised on light? Lighting is hugely important to the success of the interior. Each room has been individually considered with a series of different light sources and settings, curated to provide the visual impression of accent lighting when actually, it provides the ambient source to each space. The kitchen is lit by a bespoke series of

blade fittings that were specifically crafted into the flush ceiling, whilst the low-level lighting behind the floating timber walls lights the hall. Natural light is maximized with the use of glass roofs and full-height windows and doors. Describe your interiors style In my work, each completed project adds to an eclectic portfolio as it dictates and deserves a unique response to the brief. That said, the binding characteristic of each of our projects – which has definitely manifested itself into our own home – is a pursuit of quality craftsmanship and materials. In terms of favourite brands, we are never too far away from iGuzzini light fittings, Catalano sanitaryware and Gaggenau appliances. Which room is your favourite? The garden room is my favourite space within the apartment. It’s where all aspects of the home come together through materials and light. This can be experienced either through the layered framed vista that takes on the overall length of the apartment, or the intimate rustling of the bamboo in the court. spparcstudio.com

HIGHGATE’S VILLAGE VIBE

Surrounded by greenery, with quaint winding streets and a close-knit community, this sought-after neighbourhood feels more rural than urban Originally part of the Bishop of London’s vast hunting estate, Highgate has been a village since the 1500s. It was a stopping off point for travellers on their way into and out of London – which accounts for the large number of inns and pubs that locals can still enjoy today. Thanks to its lofty position – it’s the highest point in London – in the 1800s it became a retreat for the gentry escaping from the crowds and pollution of the city. Over the centuries, Highgate has been home to notable names from the world of science, politics and the arts. Famous residents have included Christina Rossetti, T.S. Eliot, Michael Faraday and Karl Marx, who is buried in the East Cemetery. Today, this quiet enclave of north London is popular with celebrities looking to escape the glare of the paparazzi – Kate

Moss, Jude Law and Jamie Oliver have all succumbed to the area’s considerable charms. Once settled in Highgate, residents tend to be reluctant to move. And it’s not hard to see why. With Highgate Wood, Hampstead Heath and Waterlow Park on the doorstep, there’s an abundance of green space, not to mention breathtaking views of the city. But if you miss the Capital’s buzz, you can hop on the Tube and be in the West End in just 17 minutes and in the

City in just over 20 minutes. The centre of the village is still dominated by Georgian architecture – few parts of London are this well preserved. But history has not got in the way of progress; there’s a fantastic range of independent shops alongside high street names, and a wide choice of places to eat and drink. Highgate is particularly well-served with historic pubs, including The Flask, The Bull (which has its own microbrewery) and The Duke’s Head. There’s a vibrant cultural scene, too – Highgate has its own theatre, Jacksons Lane (Matt Lucas and David Walliams performed their first double act there), and a thriving music venue, The Boogaloo. Kenwood House, with its world-famous

art collection, is a few minutes’ walk away on the edge of Hampstead Heath. Highgate has long been popular with young families looking for more outdoor space and good schools. Highgate School and Channing School are highly regarded independent schools, and there are excellent state options too. Nestled amongst this historic village is Bellway’s boutique scheme, Highgate Court. A collection of contemporary two and three bedroom apartments, where only a few properties remain for sale. Some of the homes come styled and furnished – all are ready to move into, in time for Christmas.

Area guide Highgate Perched at London’s highest natural point, Highgate offers an escape to village life while still boasting a London postcode. Virtually untouched by modern development, its Georgian architecture and 900 acres of parkland have been soughtafter for hundreds of years. The famous and picturesque Highgate Cemetery can attest to its unwavering popularity among the Capital’s elite, counting the likes of George Eliot, Douglas Adams and even Karl Marx amongst its residents. Lucky locals can hop on the Northern Line for a quick jaunt into the centre of town, though with a thriving high street of their own, they’d be forgiven for wanting to stay closer to home. Add to that a close-knit and active community, and you can see why, for so many, Highgate truly feels like home Words by Lily Edwards Photography by Kathy Anne Lim

From the agents... “Highgate is a highly sought after area, best known for its mix of Georgian townhouses and Art Deco buildings. Two-bed flats typically fetch around £550,000 with period family homes starting at £1.5 million, depending on their proximity to Hampstead Heath and desirable schools.” Shaun Cunningham, Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward

68

fabricmagazine.co.uk

“With its strong sense of community spirit, Highgate is home to some highly respected schools, meaning many buyers are typically up-sizers or downsizers who already live here and love it. Prices are strong and we expect them to remain stable over the next year, before increasing in around three to five years’ time.” Mark Sumray, Dexters

Local heroes THE FLASK, N6 Every village needs a historic pub, and Highgate is no different. Not only teeming with history, The Flask offers an incredible menu with a modern take on traditional pub grub, making loyal customers of locals and sightseers alike. For Glentree’s Trevor Abrahmsohn, it is one of the area’s main pulls. He tells us: “As I sup my delicious pint of hand-drawn real ale, I’m more than aware that this historic place dates back to the early 18th century.” 77 Highgate West Hill, N6 (020 8348 7346; theflaskhighgate.com)

THE DUKE’S HEAD, N6 With around 10 different real ales, 10 craft beers and several interesting ciders on tap, The Duke’s Head is a must for beer lovers. Keeping it local with a rotating kitchen of street food chefs, it’s a draw for local foodies, too. Nick Walker of Goldschmidt & Howland perfectly summarises its charm: “Craft beers from independent breweries, the Sacred Gin Bar and street food pop-ups, in a cosy wood-panelled pub in the heart of Highgate.” 16 Highgate High Street, N6 (020 8341 1310; thedukesheadhighgate.co.uk)

LAUDERDALE HOUSE, N6 Whether you’re looking to take a Pilates class, listen to live jazz, or hire out a beautiful building for a private event, you can’t go wrong here. This historic arts and education centre offers a picturesque café and terrace, too, ideal for enjoying some winter sun. Ivan Hrissimov of Benham and Reeves Residential Lettings says: “If you’re looking for a friendly café with scenic views to enjoy a relaxing beverage then look no further!” Waterlow Park, Highgate Hill, N6 (020 8348 8716; lauderdalehouse. org.uk)

THE GROVE

Just a few moments’ walk from the high street are the incredible period homes of The Grove, the epitome of Highgate’s quaint beauty

“I’m lucky that my husband has lived in Highgate for over 40 years now, so he’s been my shortcut to all the little secrets and hidden gems. On the way to work in the morning, when the weather is good, I’ll nip up part of the Parkland Walk with Ziggy, our rascal of a dog. Then I’ll let him guard our health and beauty shop (Ikse), while I help my husband out at Pond Square Dental (his first business) until about 10am. Afterwards, I’ll sneak into The Highgate Pantry to pick up one of their lovely pastries, which I will share only with myself, and enjoy with a cup of lemon tea while I set up at the shop. I love a little wander around Pond Square, and I have a lovely view of people rushing around, checking their phones for directions, or groups on a guided tour (no doubt being told about Sir Frances Bacon and his chicken freezing escapades). The eponymous Grazyna always has the best gossip and she sells such wonderful clothes too. If I get a chance, I’ll take Ziggy down to Waterlow Park and soak in the dreamy views, or I’ll go to say hi to Alex Dudnic at Kalendar, on Swain’s Lane, as I head for Parliament Hill. On the way home we may drop by the Boogaloo for a drink, it’s great, and dog-friendly too. (ikselife.co.uk; pondsquaredental.co.uk)

CREATIVE BEGINNINGS With exciting new facilities, Hampstead Fine Arts College continues to offer students an informal, collaborative environment in which to fully realise their academic and artistic potential

writers and actors in their own right. And facilities at the college rival those at leading universities; this year saw the opening of a cutting edge new home for the Fashion and Textiles, and Media and Film Studies departments in a former interiors shop on England’s Lane. Classes are kept small, and the teaching atmosphere is informal and collaborative. It’s this open, energising atmosphere, believes Cave, which inspires a love of learning that extends well beyond formal exams and into adult life. Tucked away behind wrought iron gates in a quiet corner of Belsize Park, Fine Arts College has an enviable reputation as a school that draws out students’ individual talents in an atmosphere that one parent has described as “industrious informality”. Alongside a full academic curriculum, it offers an exceptional range of art-based subjects – including fine art, textiles, film, photography and graphic design – with students’ work in these disciplines being recognised by institutions such as the Royal Academy of Arts. Unusually, there is no restriction on subject combinations, so students are free to create a study programme that is tailored to their strengths. An original vision Principal Candida Cave, a graduate of the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford, founded the Fine Arts College in 1978 with fellow artist Nicholas Cochrane. It started life as a specialist sixth form college for art and art history with just 20 pupils; numbers grew and in 1982 a

full arts and humanities A Level curriculum was added. By the early 1990s, a GCSE programme was in place, and the college was thrilled to welcome its first Year 9 pupils this September – a natural entry point to prepare for GCSEs. Fine Arts College also offers a Portfolio course, aimed at preparing students for Art Foundation. Its founders always saw the college as a bridge between school and university, a place that encouraged self-discipline and self-motivation, and this distinctive philosophy is still very much in evidence today. As Cave points out: “The informal nature of relationships between staff and students strengthens high expectations and encourages a rigorous approach to work.” Outstanding teaching and facilities The students at Fine Arts College are fortunate to be taught by staff who, as well as being highly experienced educators, are often distinguished musicians, artists, filmmakers,

A unique ethos Entry to the College is based on academic and creative potential, rather than prior academic performance. The process varies slightly at GCSE, A Level and Portfolio stage, but references from previous schools and an informal interview play an important part. The College’s ethos is rooted in the belief that, with the right encouragement, students can flourish academically and creatively. The school prides itself on being able to identify and nurture talent that may have been overlooked in other school environments. Small class sizes, outstanding teaching and excellent pastoral care make this possible. And it is reflected in the impressive results achieved: this summer, students celebrated a nine per cent year-on-year improvement on A level results. Leavers have gone on to a wide range of prestigious destinations, including Russell Group and US universities and elite art colleges such as Central Saint Martins and Parsons School of Design in New York.

No Brexit for books We may be about to leave the European Union, but our love affair with children’s fiction from the continent doesn’t have to end. Here are five all-time classics (and possible stocking fillers) from across the Channel. Bonne lecture!

The Adventures of Asterix René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, France/Belgium Asterix is a plucky Gaul who, with his boar-hunting, menhircarrying mate Obelix and some potent magic potion, takes on the Roman occupiers in 50BC. With its tongue-in-cheek names (think Getafix the druid and Unhygienix the fishmonger) and gentle application of national stereotypes, this 37-volume comic series has been making children and adults laugh since 1959.

Emil and the Detectives Erich Kästner, Germany Emil Tischbein’s mother sends him to Berlin with money for his grandmother. But he falls asleep on the train, and when he wakes up, both the money and the dodgy fellow in his carriage have gone. Will Emil and his motley crew track down the perp? And will the adults believe Herr Grundeis is guilty?

The Moomins Tove Jansson, Finland/Sweden The official website describes Moomins as “white and roundish trolls with large snouts”. But being a bit funny-looking hasn’t prevented them from building up a devoted global fan base for their books, or becoming a €700m-a-year brand. Oh, and they’ve got a theme park too.

How would you sum up the school in a sentence? We once dreamed up the phrase: ‘A jump-out-of-bed school’. We liked the idea that teenagers, insofar as they jump out of bed to do anything, would be happy and excited about coming to school. That feels true of Highgate. How would you describe the atmosphere? Energetic, lively, playful, questioning, anti-pompous, hard-working, aspirational, outward-looking.

Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales Hans Christian Andersen, Denmark He may have written plays, novels and poems, but it’s for his 168 fairy tales that Hans Christian Andersen is best known. From Thumbelina to The Ugly Duckling, his stories have delighted adults and children for 150 years. And in doing so, they’ve become part of our shared cultural consciousness.

Pippi Longstocking Astrid Lindgren, Sweden What’s a superhumanly strong nine-year-old girl to do when her father (and only living parent) vanishes at sea? Go and live in a house with just a pet monkey, a pet horse and a suitcase full of gold, of course. Pippi’s skewed take on life and defiant attitude have made her an enduring character – not to mention a poster child for the feminist movement. Girl power!

The Shortlist Whitehall Park School State co-ed day school for pupils aged 4 to 11 (020 7561 0113; white hallparkschool.co.uk) Highgate School Co-ed independent day school for pupils aged 3 to 18 years (020 8340 1524; highgateschool.org. uk)

Ladybird Montessori School Co-ed nursery for children aged 2 to 5 years – mornings only (020 8348 3054; montessoriladybird.co.uk) Channing School Independent day school for girls aged 4 to 18 years (020 8340 2328; channing.co.uk)

Avenue Nursery & Pre-Preparatory School Co-ed nursery and pre-prep school for children aged 2.5 to 7 years (020 8348 6815; avenuenursery. com)

What’s your personal educational ethos? Children are born curious with an insatiable thirst for knowing stuff and for asking questions. Those instincts need nurturing so that young adults are still as excited about knowledge and discovery as they were when they were setting out at school. How can you help pupils to transition to the next stage of their lives? We’re blessed with excellent links to work experience and employability schemes, as well as to many leading universities. We also have a Careers and Employability specialist, recruited from Sky, to help our pupils grow into employable young adults. How do you look after the wellbeing of your pupils? We have a ‘five-a-day’ for our pupils’ wellbeing, which we underpin with strong pastoral care and responsive promotion of good mental health. It’s all overseen by a Director of Wellbeing who is there for pupils, parents and teachers alike. Highgate School, North Road, N6 (020 8340 1524; highgateschool.org.uk)
