Though she may be young, actor Molly Windsor is no newcomer in the world of drama, she discusses the roles that shaped her career, and what attracted her to her newest project, Alibi’s Traces Words Liz Skone James

Molly Windsor might be just 22 years old, but she has already been named as both a BAFTA ‘Breakthrough Brit’ and a 2016 Star of Tomorrow, and her work was recognised with a BAFTA Best Actress award last year. It is hard to believe that she was never really into drama at school, describing it as: “the showy off kids showing off again.” When a friend started attending a local drama group in Nottingham, now known as the Talent 1st Organisation, Molly was talked into going along to support them, and what began as a duty became an obsession. “It was looking at TV and film and it was about communicating with each other, and people’s reactions to things, and I did just find that fascinating – the psychology of it,” she explains. “And I stayed there because I loved it… And then I got cast in Samantha Morton’s directing debut.” That role, at the age of 11, undoubtedly had a huge impact on her future career path. The Channel 4 film, called The Unloved, shone a light on the care system for orphans and children in danger. Molly starred opposite Robert Carlyle as abused child Lucy. “That experience of being on a set was unlike anything else, and I really took to it,” she tells me. “I cared about the story… I just had that blind faith that one day I would get to go back on

set again, and that it was going to be great.” She did, and it was. A role as Margaret’s daughter Rachel in the 2011 film, Oranges and Sunshine led to her BAFTA Best Actress-winning performance as Holly Winshaw in Three Girls. And she hasn’t looked back. The devastating BBC mini-series about the horrifying true story of the Rochdale grooming scandal – for which nine men were convicted in 2012 – explores how so many people turned a blind eye when the girls involved tried to speak out. In the central role of Holly, Molly plays a 15-year-old from a loving home who befriends teenage sisters, Amber and Ruby, who in turn introduce her to their ‘friends’ and ‘boyfriends’ – older Asian men who run a local takeaway and give the girls free food and alcohol. When friendship turns to terrifying sexual violence, the girls are powerless to escape. Highly acclaimed both critically and by the viewing public, Molly considers the series to be her greatest achievement to date. “It was never just a job to me,” she explains, seriously. “For Three Girls to have that recognition absolutely meant the world to the whole team. It was such a responsibility, and I feel very proud of what we achieved with it, and that those stories were told, and those voices were heard.” With a raft of hard-hitting projects under her belt, I ask if she actively looks for roles that will make people think. “I have always been led by the script, and if I am fascinated by the story and by the characters,” she nods. But that’s not to say that light-hearted is off the agenda. “It is just a case of waiting for the stars to align with the right people and the right script. And I feel confident that it will come. I don’t know what sort of role that might be, because I think it is really important that you don’t go ‘these are the roles that I want’, because then they will never come around…” In the meantime, more serious stuff: up next, a role in crime thriller Traces, opposite Line of Duty’s Martin Compston. Exploring the world of forensic science, the series, which airs on UKTV’s Alibi this month, is written by Amelia Bullmore, based on an original idea by best-selling crime writer Val McDermid. Set in the Scottish city of Dundee, it follows three women who join forces to uncover the truth about an unsolved murder case. “I play Emma Hedges, who was originally born in Dundee in Scotland but moved away when she was very young,” Molly tells me. “Traces starts with Emma travelling back to Dundee to take up a job as a lab technician. And she gets enlisted on this online course as part of her job. And there are certain circumstances that make her think that they are using her mum as a case study, so then her personal life and work life fall together, and it all gets a bit complicated. The drama spirals from there,” she explains.
“AMELIA JUST STARTED TALKING TO US ABOUT THE STORY, AND NOBODY BREATHED FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES…”
It was a role that captivated Molly from the first reading. “I think when I read the first three episodes, I could really see it. I could see Emma and I could see this world that Amelia had made,” she tells me excitedly. “And then I went and met Amelia and the rest of the team, and she just started talking to us about the story, and nobody breathed for about 20 minutes. It is really rare to go into a meeting and to not be talking about acting, or filming or anything like that, but to just talk about the story. And to hear about this project that we were all hooked on, because it is such a compelling story… I think you can only go with your gut instinct and I was very clear in my mind that this was the job that I wanted to do next.” Molly is now hoping that the finished series will appeal to the public as much as those initial scripts did to her. “I have really learnt that it is a big game of trust,” she explains. “Being an actor and trusting that things are going to be ok… But it is good to come away at the end of shooting and know that your job is done. And then beyond that, it is out of your control.” Of course, when everything comes together in the right way, it is very special. “There is a film that I did called Make Up that premiered at the London Film Festival this autumn,” she tells me. The independent feature also stars Stefanie Martini and is set on a remote caravan park in Cornwall. It tells the story of 19-year-old Ruth (played by Molly) who is forced to question her sexuality when she is stalked by another woman. “That was one that we really committed to,” she explains. “And we had a fantastic time shooting and it really meant a lot to us, and at the first screening it was such a wonderful feeling of all of us going: ‘that is the film that we thought we were making’.” Any other projects on the horizon? Not right now, or at least nothing she can talk about. Molly says she is: “waiting on the next job to be set in stone. There’s a job in particular floating around at the moment and I’m going ‘I really want to do that!’ But then at the same time, if it doesn’t go my way, I have to go ‘ok, that’s fine: I didn’t want it anyway. On to the next!’,” she laughs. Molly tells me that she has adopted a coping mechanism for auditions. “When I was at the drama group, Martin Arrowsmith, the man who leads it, gave me great advice that really shaped me as an actor. He would always, always call an audition a meeting – just something that simple. His advice was that when you go into a meeting, you are testing whether you want to work with them as much as they are testing whether they want to work with you. And it is not about going to impress them, it is more about going to open the communication, and that is something that has really stuck with me,” she explains. While she waits on that elusive next job, Molly is using the time to catch up with TV, “because you do not get to watch stuff when you are shooting,” she explains. “I have recently binge watched Fleabag – quite late to the party, but really, really loved that. And I’m really bad for spending an evening with my family and sticking on something mindless like Gogglebox.” The simple life is very important to Molly. “I’ve got a golden retriever, so we go on lots of walks,” she reveals. “And I think it’s important to take time to be with family when you are at home. So, lots of walks, lots of cake, all the good stuff…” Who could disagree?

Samantha Cusick Samantha Cusick wants our experience of going to the hairdresser to be fun, and that starts with the salon itself. I love it so much I want to move in then and there. Not least because of the awesome location just off Portobello Road (next door to that blue door, no less). Neon word art lights up the space, tropical wallpaper adorns the walls, the styling stations are hewn from cool Carrera marble and there are golden pineapples everywhere – but what makes me smile the most is the edible golden glitter sprinkled over my latte. Oh, and Samantha’s British Bulldog Sidney, who wanders around looking perpetually forlorn and has become an institution in the salon (he even has his own title – VP of client relations, natch – and an Instagram page with over 10,000 followers). The team here are experts in balayage and ‘invisible’ tape hair extensions by The London Hair Lab, but ultimately, their goal is to create wearable, workable styles that are inspired by their clients rather than by contrived, forecasted trends. I tell Samantha that I’m looking for low maintenance, and have considered giving up the fight and letting my greys have their way, but she’s horrified by the idea and tells me that with less than 30 per cent grey coverage, I’m a way off needing to do this (hallelujah!). Instead she treats me to a warm autumnal look, in her signature balayage style, that works perfectly with both my skin tone and my lifestyle. StylSmile It’s been a few years since I fell for Tom Pellereau’s StylPro (a nifty wash and blow dry system for make-up brushes) and it’s no gimmick – I’m still obsessed with spinning the grime from my tools now. So, I need no persuasion when it comes to trying The Apprentice 2011 finalist’s latest gizmo, an at home tooth whitening system that works without the use of hydrogen peroxide or abrasive cleansers.
The StylSmile, which is dentistapproved and promises your money back if you don’t have whiter teeth in four weeks, consists of a sonic blue light toothbrush, special toothpaste containing a whitening ingredient called phthalimido-peroxy-hexanoic acid (PAP) that is activated by blue light and a blue light accelerator and mouth tray. I’m excited to unbox my kit when it arrives, and even more excited to get brushing – that’s definitely a first. With an impressive 32,000 sonic vibrations per minute the brush certainly feels like it’s doing something. Every thirty seconds a pulse reminds me to move to a different section of my mouth, and throughout, my teeth are exposed to the blue light that beams through the bristles. The toothpaste tastes pleasant and leaves my mouth feeling fresh. Alongside brushing morning and evening, the instructions advise using the accelerator and mouth tray twice a week for 15 minutes. I squeeze toothpaste into the tray, insert over my teeth and turn on the activating blue accelerator light that plugs into my mouth (hoping all the while that nobody bursts in to find me looking like this). It’s not dignified, but it does seem to work. A month in and I’m a StylSmile convert. My teeth have that “just been to the hygienist” feel daily and they are perceptibly whiter. Impressive stuff. O
ur table wasn’t ready when we arrived, and this was a good thing. Our upgrade, size-wise, could barely contain the spread of dishes recommended. Sri Lankan food is as much about the relishes, condiments, chutneys and sambols (intense side salads) as the mains, and it’s all meant for sharing. Fortunately, I was dining with my son, and as such there was no standing on ceremony and a lot of elbowing aside for the last succulent chunk of Vaira’s jaggery beef, a slow cooked marinated short rib that melted in the mouth. Our other main, the monkfish poached in coconut milk and turmeric, held its own with a subtler note amid the bold big dishes. We had started with the hot butter cuttlefish. It packed a powerful chili punch but was deemed delicious by the boy brought up with a central London palate. Culinary heritage is the backbone of Sri Lankan cooking. Sweet, spicy, hot and sour intermingle on a menu that references the family and friends whose recipes have inspired this new
Soho eatery. Kumar’s pineapple and aubergine was the side of the moment, though the unattributed cashew nuts fried with green capsicum were a close second. Flash-fried green beans with grated coconut were unexpectedly crunchy, with texture jostling for attention alongside colour and spice. The cocktail list made ample use of traditional flavours such as pineapple, jackfruit and jaggery; the Bentota Bittersweet gin and ginger combo brought a welcome hint of beachside sundowner to autumnal London. Less holiday, more every day, hoppers are a big deal in Sri Lanka and Kolamba is keen to make them a thing in London. Traditionally street food, these edible bowl-shaped rice flour and coconut milk pancakes are designed to be filled with whatever your heart desires. Ours had a soft cooked egg nestled in the bottom, and a spicy red onion relish on the side: break, tear, share, were our instructions. A milky sweet hopper made an appearance for pudding – a creamy coconut and
lime sorbet with a refreshing hint of zing, and crunchy caramelised pineapple with silk smooth vanilla ice cream. Aunty Nalini’s rum-spiced ice coffee was a dessert in itself. And if Nalini is a regular at the stove in any Sri Lankan kitchen, she deserves to put her feet up with just this kind of booze-laced caffeine. Hats off to her. Whole roast lamb shoulder tacos with Pico de Gallo and green sauce While Mum’s favourite frozen food emporium might like to think they’ve got festive finger food covered, we prefer something made with a little more love. The team at independent butcher shop chain Provenance suggests this delicious and fun taco recipe (provenancebutcher.com) INGREDIENTS Serves 4-6 1 whole bone in lamb shoulder (around 2kg) | 500ml white wine | 1 bulb of garlic | 1 pack of tortillas or fresh corn tacos | 1 large bunch of coriander | 2 limes | 1 red onion | 1 red chilli | 300g cherry tomatoes | salt and pepper to taste | 1 tsp cumin seed | 1 tsp fennel seed | ½ tsp Szechuan peppercorns
METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 200 °C, put the lamb shoulder in a deep roasting tray and season well. Place in the oven and cook for 10-15 mins to get some
colour on the shoulder. Remove from the oven and add the white wine and garlic bulb to the tray (hold back 2 large cloves for the green sauce), cover with foil and turn oven down to 150 °C. Cook the lamb for 3-4 hours until meat is falling off the bone. 2. For the Pico de Gallo (fresh salsa), roughly chop the tomatoes; finely dice the red onion, chilli and a small amount of coriander. Season with salt and pepper and mix with the juice of one of the limes. 3. For the green sauce, place the rest of the coriander, garlic, lime
juice, salt and pepper into a blender and blitz until smooth. 4. In a pestle and mortar bash the cumin, fennel and Szechuan pepper. Mix with 1 tsp of salt and ½ tsp of pepper and set to one side. 5. To serve, shred the shoulder of lamb and season generously with the spice mixture and some of the juices from the roasting tray. Assemble the tacos with some of the lamb, a spoonful of the fresh tomato salsa and a nice dollop of the green sauce. Or lay it on the table for your guests to build their own.
Helping homeless people If you’re lucky enough to be eating out, spare a thought for those for whom eating out means queuing up at a food bank. Once again this month, StreetSmart have teamed up with some of the Capital’s best restaurants to raise money for homeless and vulnerable people.
Since it was established in 1998, the charity has raised over £9.5 million by asking diners to add a voluntary donation of £1 to their bill. All money raised goes directly to reputable charities helping homeless people in the local area. There are loads of restaurants participating this
year, but some of our favourites include Angela Hartnett’s Murano and Café Murano; Ollie Dabbous’ Hide; and Nobu at the Metropolitan Hotel. Look out for tablecards promoting the initiative, or discover the full list of participating venues at streetsmart.org.uk.
My kitchen heroes are… Spanish chef Karlos Arguiñano: I watched his programme on TV every day as a child. I loved it because he was clean, professional and well organised. He made cooking an easy-going experience, and he inspired me to make cooking a pleasure and not an obligation. My fail-safe dinner party menu is… tuna tartare with avocado cream and garlic crostini as a starter; roasted duck breast with sauté Savoy cabbage, celeriac purée and cherry sauce for mains; ending with chocolate mousse with pistachio. My last meal on earth would be… chicken liver with caramelised onion. When I feel down, I cook… fresh pasta. My favourite London restaurant is… Aksular. It’s a Turkish restaurant with a great selection of Mediterranean food. It offers high quality and caring service, and the ambience is nicely relaxed. The staff are also very friendly. My ultimate London day consists of… spending time at home, enjoying quality time with my family. Lapland usually conjures up cosy images of Santa’s grotto, but a new hotel opening in the village of Levi this month promises to offer something a little different. The largest hotel venture in the Arctic region, Design Hotel Levi is the result of a £10 million build. Architect Pave Mikkonen has combined Arctic nature into his design in a unique way: materials used include locally sourced wood, natural stone and copper. The ‘hip’ roof blends into the highland fell landscape with the exterior built of greying Lapland pinewood and a reception area of natural stone. Inside, Finnish design and artwork is championed: sculptures from Essi Korva and giant, abstract photography by Kaisa Sirén used as murals, partitions and shower walls. The hotel is located at the foot of the Levi ski resort slopes, in the heart of the village, offering guests access to the very best of the region. With 230 kms of maintained cross country tracks, 886 kms of snowmobile trails, 20 kms of winter walking and biking routes and 40 pistes for downhill skiers and snowboarders of all levels including total beginners. Not as popular with tourists as Brussels and Bruges, Ghent might just be Belgium’s best kept secret: the perfect size to feel both welcoming and vibrant, with enough historical, cultural and culinary attractions to satisfy the most intrepid of travellers. This is the perfect time to visit. To get a feel for the place, I recommend spending some time exploring Patershol, a bohemian neighbourhood full of independent shops, restaurants and traditional architecture. Visitors in December will want to explore the Christmas market on the Korenmarkt – an enchanted wonderland just opposite the hotel. Stop off for lunch at Roots Ghent, a hidden gem that comes highly recommended: service is friendly, and the cooking is really creative. Lovers of contemporary art can’t miss the S.M.A.K. (Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art) – in a city known for its rebelliousness, the art on show here is every bit as unconventional and this is considered to be the most important collection of contemporary art in Flanders. Traditionalists will find the Museum of Fine Arts just opposite. Though it is always worth a visit, next February will see the opening of the highly anticipated Van Eyck, An Optical Revolution. Set to be the exhibition of the year in Ghent, the world of Van Eyck and his revolutionary gaze will be brought to life in the biggest exhibition of his work ever. Start your evening at The Cobbler, the hotel’s very own, award-winning cocktail bar, before heading out to dinner at Taxi’s. FINDING BLISS IN BALLYMENA
A short hop from Belfast, luxury, fine food and a warm welcome in glorious rural surroundings await at Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort by Becky Pomfret
T
he best kind of mini-break involves the shortest of journeys combined with the feeling that time has stretched in an altogether different way. Belfast is just an hour’s flight from London and it seems to take just minutes from stepping off the plane to us jumping into our rental car (via the friendliest service ever from Avis). We’re seeking a couple of nights away from the stress of, well, everyday life, and are heading to Galgorm Spa & Golf Resort, less than an hour’s drive from Belfast. We stop on the way in Antrim, to eat a huge meal at the welcoming Top of the Town Bar & Grill, and then drive on through the rain to the warmest of welcomes at the hotel. The moment the door opens, Maurice the concierge shakes us by the hand and ushers us in to stand in front of the roaring fire – we feel like we’ve come home. If we lived on a beautiful country estate, that is… We spot two different brides while we wait to check in (we’re told there are up to three weddings at a time here, and with scenery so beautiful, it’s easy to see why). Apparently, the wedding planners are adept at keeping the brides apart – it goes without saying that this

is one day you do not want to be upstaged by somebody else in a white dress! Our room boasts the biggest of beds and the swishest of bathrooms, with views of the stunning River Maine rushing past, and the resort’s Thermal Village and Spa, where we can see steam drifting from the private hot tubs. It’s a tempting sight, so we don our swimsuits to head over and investigate. The Spa and Thermal Village are a big draw here (the first of their kind in Northern Ireland), so we don’t feel out of place wandering over in our bathrobes. It doesn’t feel over-busy though; our hot tub by the river is very private and heated by a wood burner, it’s basically a perfectly warm and deep bath with the most picturesque of views. We sip on chilled Prosecco whilst marvelling that the sun has decided to make a rare appearance (it has been raining non-stop for days, we are told). Half an hour later, refreshed after our journey, we feel ready for dinner. The resort has recently taken over a restaurant by the local golf course called The Castle Kitchen + Bar, and the team run guests the five minutes down the road to it in one of their

fleet of BMWs. We tuck into enormous burgers and enjoy the rolling green views of the golf course and the eclectic décor. The atmosphere is buzzy and friendly, and we don’t want the night to end when we get back to the hotel. Luckily there are no early nights here… Tucked away is the resort’s very own pub, Bar + Grill at Gillies. On the entertainment bill for the evening are a line-up of Irish and Scottish fiddlers and singers, playing a mixture of traditional folk with pop and rock covers thrown in too (we hear Pink Floyd in a whole new light!). We peruse the enormous gin list and sample some that are new to us. Northern Irish gin Shortcross becomes a firm favourite and we make a note to look out for a bottle in duty free at the airport. The next day sees more sunshine, and after a delicious Irish breakfast we set off on a Game of Thrones pilgrimage. Many scenes from the cult show were filmed around here and we use the location map that we picked up from the airport, along with Google Maps, to guide us.
The scenery is breathtakingly beautiful and we take endless photographs. As we dive off down quiet country roads it really is just us and the sheep. Word to the wise though – don’t entirely trust Google Maps to take you down actual roads. At one point we confidently set off up a
road that peters out to nothing, and we endure a worrying few minutes thinking we won’t be able to turn around to get back to civilisation. For those in the know, we recommend Dark Hedges (although be prepared to have a lot of company: coach-loads were arriving as we left). From here we drive up to the Giant’s Causeway, though we quickly realise that a good half a day is needed to really do it justice. We’re short on time now, as a planned gin tasting session back at Galgorm beckons, but it is just another reason to book a return visit. The tasting is run by expert Ryan in the gin library. Sessions run daily and cost £25 per person. Sitting back and getting comfortable with a French 75 in hand, we listen as Ryan guides us through some of the gins in the resort’s huge gin library (over 400 currently, but the number is ever increasing). As we sip, we learn about the history of gin in a fun and very interactive way. Well-oiled by this experience, we make our way through to the River Room for our dinner. It is one of only four restaurants in Northern Ireland to be awarded three AA Rosettes for culinary excellence. Head Chef Chris Rees creates dishes that are true to the ingredients, showcasing local artisan producers with menus that change daily. We eat like royalty and head back to Gillies for a nightcap. The next morning the drizzle is back, but we really don’t mind. After another fine breakfast we head back to the Spa and detox in the beautiful sauna, marvelling at the floor to ceiling window on one side that offers a spectacular view of the river. A very quick and cold visit to the snow room follows and then it’s time to reluctantly check out of our room. We decide against driving into Belfast city centre for a spot of sight-seeing – considering we’ve come away for a relaxing break it has been a pretty full on itinerary – and instead sit in the cosy lobby area, reading our books and editing our Instagram photos. Feeling as though we have been away for much longer than we have, we declare that it has been the very best of minibreaks, and we determine to come back and visit again very soon. Tell me about the house itself It’s a four bedroom property with two bathrooms, two reception rooms and a kitchen. The house is an unusual shape with turrets on the side and it actually looks a little bit like Bowser’s Castle in Super Mario Bros! Due to the style of the property we have a series of rooms that are all interesting shapes and sizes – I think there are only two square rooms in the whole house.
Have you made any changes to the layout? At the rear of the house we had

a small study, the kitchen and a conservatorystyle room. Each room was small and it felt cramped, so I decided to remove the walls (not structurally) and changed the conservatory-style windows into doors leading to the garden. This
has made a huge difference and we now have a much larger kitchen, dining room and even a space with chairs to sit and relax by the garden.
What are your non-negotiables when buying a home? Totally random, but I like to live on the main road. I like to feel connected to the world and I’ve always liked the bustle of people and the benefit of good transport links. Beyond that, I like a house with potential and often look for a doer-upper. When it comes to decorating, I love for my interiors to evolve as time and funds allow.
Describe your interiors style I’m a natural maximalist so I definitely subscribe to the “more is more, less is a bore” mindset. I’ve been collecting items for my home since the age of 19 – I love things that can tell a story or two and evoke memories. I also love quirky items that make me smile; interiors for me are not all about how they look, it’s how they make you feel.
How important is character to you? I love a period feature; I would always favour an older house with character over a new build or modern house.

Tell me about the use of colour and texture I tend to go for block colour on the walls but then add colour and texture to my interiors with the use of lighting and accessories. I have a lot of metal lamps that create shadows and atmosphere in the room at night, gold detailing on the ceiling in two rooms of the house, and tin tiles on the kitchen ceiling. These details create texture and drama, and they bounce light back into the room. For colour, I like to add in accessories: rugs, artwork, cushions and throws, to introduce a pop of colour and pattern to the space.
Aside from Rockett St George, which interiors brands are your favourites? Ikea is great for all the practical things like
kitchenware and accessories. I love Quirky Interiors for furniture, brass kitchens and antiques. And Pure White Lines for their fabulous vintage finds.
What was your best thrifty find for the house? And the most extravagant? Too many... I am an eBay addict! I’ve bought a bargain fridge, dining tables and a few Victorian beds. And for the most extravagant, I have a Rockett St George black leather Chesterfield sofa – it’s amazing!
Which room is your favourite? I love my kitchen; we’ve had so many good times here and it’s where we all congregate with family and friends.

If you’re whisking your family away for Christmas or New Year, you’ll already have felt the impact of peak-travel prices on your pocket. But while parents in the independent school sector can request term-time holidays, stateschool parents who flout the rules face a fine of £60 or more. What’s more, taking your children out of school mid-term still doesn’t solve the problem of who’s going to look after them during the long school holidays. After all, most of us have six weeks’ leave at most – not 13-17. Head teacher Jane Smalley has rolled out a radical solution: the school she owns and runs, Shrewsbury Prepatoria, has ditched traditional school holidays altogether. Instead, it’s open all year round (except for a week at Christmas and Easter, plus bank holidays). Parents can take up to a recommended maximum of 30 days’ ‘leave’ whenever it suits them, though Jane says most take two weeks. They can even ask for a day off on Monday morning if their child’s tired after a busy weekend. The system saves parents having to juggle childcare arrangements from their desks. They can also avoid huge crowds at places like Legoland. But Jane says the children also get a more rounded education. “While they’re at
