November 2020
The definitive guide to London living Editor’s letter Liz Skone James I write this on a bright, cold Sunday; the sun is streaming through my window and the view outside is of gloriously golden autumn leaves. It’s the sort of day that I love, and one that would usually fill me with excitement at the thought of the coming months – undoubtedly my favourite time. This year, of course, is a little more uncertain – there definitely won’t be any big fireworks events this month, and as for festive celebrations in the coming weeks, nobody knows… but there are still things to look forward to, I promise! Starting with a highly anticipated new series of Netflix favourite, The Crown; we caught up with cover star Tom to find out about his role playing a young Prince Andrew. If you prefer your culture live, we bring news of the performances, exhibitions and film screenings that are still being scheduled across the Capital. And, even at this time, new restaurants are opening, including one that we’ve been looking forward to for months – from the team behind Pick & Cheese, early indications show that The Cheese Barge is going to be Gouda (sorry). And interiors-wise, we’re looking to our bathrooms, where sleek and minimal are out and opulent luxury is in. Until next month, look after yourselves.

Emma Haworth: Human Seasons
From 14 November, Rebecca Hossack Far be it for us to ever take for granted the Capital’s Royal Parks and green open spaces but we’ll admit, this year, they have proved to be a vital lifeline we didn’t know we’d need. This is a timely exhibition that pulls at our nature-loving heartstrings, combining city and park life in all its quirky detail. British artist Haworth explores the changing of the seasons through a series of scenic paintings. In fine, meticulous brushstrokes, she captures these magical places where the social and natural worlds merge, whilst setting a firm reminder that this autumn/winter we must get out and enjoy our beloved verdant bits of London, whatever the weather. 2a Conway Street, Fitzroy Square, W1T (020 7436 4899; rebeccahossack.com)
THEATRE
Living Newspaper: A Counter Narrative From 12 November, Royal Court Theatre
While London’s theatre scene is still on the long road to recovery, a few tentative creative projects are now emerging thanks to a radical re-think – and nobody does radical better than the Royal Court. Taking its historical cue from a US arts programme designed to mobilise unemployed actors and theatre professionals during the Great Depression, the Living Newspaper series is a wonderfully hopeful endeavour for theatre-goers and workers alike. Led by writers, and with freelance artists at the fore, the six weekly editions will include headlines, satire of the week’s events, think pieces and even dating columns – a newspaper come to life and performed in the spaces around this eminent arts hub. BOOK
Life Meets Art By Sam Lubell
If lockdown turned us into a nation of snoopers (who didn’t love seeing inside the homes of everyone from news reporters to The Rolling Stones?), this is one pertinent publication for our pandemic-ridden times. Life Meets Art is a voyeuristic coffee table tome showing us the interior spaces of some of the world’s most creative movers and shakers. It acts as a fascinating historical document, too, profiling the room sets of anyone who’s anyone from da Vinci to Dickens, Diane von Furstenberg to David Bowie… Be prepared for some serious house envy. £39.95, hardback (phaidon.com)
EXHIBITION
Margaret Calvert: Woman at Work Until 10 January, Design Museum
Even if you don’t know the name Margaret Calvert, you’ll undoubtedly know her work: alongside Jock Kinneir, the British graphic designer and typographer is responsible for much of Britain’s road signing system. This exhibition explores the designer’s incredible six decade spanning career and offers a deep dive into the design processes behind the signs, from early drawings to latter day commissions – including the brilliantly subversive ‘Woman at Work’ print for Jealous Gallery. And while you may think this one’s a bit nerdy and niche, we beg to differ: Calvert’s signage is so ubiquitous, that here we have an important artist hiding in plain sight. Hers are everyday icons that helped to shape the nation’s visual identity. 224-238 Kensington High Street, W8 (020 3862 5900; designmuseum.org)

FABRIC PROMOTION
Treasure hunters
The life of an auctioneer is never predictable, says auctioneer and valuer, Harrison Goldman, one of the specialist team at Dawsons Auctioneers & Valuers who travel all over London and beyond, advising clients on anything from a silver tea set to a house full of antique furniture “We were recently called to attend a large detached property situated in one of Hampstead’s most premium addresses,” Harrison tells us. “The family required a market valuation for the entire contents and subsequent sale at auction. As we operate a ‘no stone unturned policy’, I spent a whole day exploring every cupboard and attic. It was a fruitful search – a pair of sterling silver Tiffany & Co serving dishes found behind the sink later sold at auction for £550, a 1930s bronze Menorah by Benno Elkan sold for £4,200 and an abstract unsigned bronze sculpture, found within overgrown foliage in the garden, sold for £3,100. Amazingly, all of these items had been missed by another auction house who had previously carried out a probate valuation when the former resident passed away.”
“After the careful collection and removal of the saleable contents, I arranged for the remaining low-value contents of the five-bedroom house to be donated to local charities, anything unsuitable for donation (including, on this occasion, a decomposing car!) was then removed by our in house clearance team. Because I always remain on site to check that nothing of value is left behind accidentally, I managed to rescue several albums of family photographs that were believed to be long lost… These sentimental treasures were returned to a grateful family.”
“We can’t recommend Dawsons highly enough. We have worked closely with Harrison Goldman, who is professional, friendly and knowledgeable, and has helped many of our clients at often very sensitive times during probate. His knowledge and expertise has been of great value.” Philip Green, Goldschmidt and Howland
Speaking to Harrison about his work, it is clear that this is just one example of the many instances where the Dawsons team have not only discovered previously overlooked items of value, but more importantly saved them from being lost forever. Harrison tells me a story involving a client who had inherited a London home from a deceased relative. “They contacted a local ‘man in a van’ to value and remove its contents. After receiving a valuation of £550 for the entire contents, they were ready to sell. Fortunately, an inquisitive relative spied an ‘interesting chair or two’ and then sought an expert opinion from us. Much to the family’s delight, our team of specialists valued and sold the collection for an impressive £86,000!”
Dawsons Auctioneers & Valuers are an established antiques and fine art auction house with offices in London and Berkshire. The team are experts in providing valuations and advice across the country, whether it be for auction, insurance or probate purposes. They provide a ‘turn-key’ solution to their customers, inclusive of the initial valuation, subsequent collection, sale of items at auction, logistics and clearance. Covering the whole of the UK, they specialise in selling antiques and collectables, including furniture, paintings, jewellery, watches, classic cars and much more. Dawsons hold a monthly fine art and antiques auction, streaming all of their auctions live online to a huge global audience; ensuring that they achieve maximum worth in respect of any items that they auction. Their team of specialists take care of everything, ensuring that all items are carefully researched, catalogued, and marketed to prospective buyers across the globe. To arrange a free valuation you can send photographs to info@dawsonsauctions.co.uk or arrange an appointment at Dawsons’ London office in Hampstead. TOM
For Tom Byrne, a part in The Crown presents the most exciting of career opportunities. We talk working on the show and his aspirations for the future INTERVIEW
fabricmagazine.co.uk
Tom Byrne’s face may not be one you can immediately place, but that’s set to change later this month when he makes his debut as a young Prince Andrew in the new series of The Crown. Having been streamed in 73 million homes worldwide, the multi-award-winning drama from Netflix is one of the most-watched shows on the planet, so it goes without saying that this is a dream role for any actor, established or otherwise. “It was so remarkable to be told that I’d got the part,” he recalls. “I felt so fortunate.” All the more remarkable, in fact, because, for a time, it appeared he hadn’t been successful. “It was quite the story actually,” he explains. “I auditioned back in – I think it would’ve been May 2019 – and my first audition went really well. The feedback I was getting suggested that I might be a shoo-in for it, that I was what they were looking for. But I did the recall, and I don’t really know what happened… I was stressed and uptight and I found that I completely got in my own way. And the next day I heard that they were probably going to look in a different direction.” It was devastating news, but Tom made his peace with it, going on to get a part in A Discovery of Witches. And then, eight weeks later, he received a call from his agent, telling him that they wanted to see him again. “I was like, oh my God, yes! But also, no! Because it was brilliant news, but it was resurrecting this thing that was so exciting, but at the same time had so much dread attached to it,” he tells me. Actually, Tom was given the part without ever having to re-audition. “It was a complete 180 out of nowhere,” he grins. It is, undoubtedly, an interesting time to be playing the Queen’s middle son, but Tom won’t be drawn on that, acknowledging simply, that: “it most certainly is.” This fourth series is expected to cover events between 1979 and 1990, long before the Epstein story became public, but I wonder whether the story has meant he’s had more attention since the casting was announced earlier this year. “The attention has mainly come from my mum telling me about how excited her friends are, which has been lovely,” he smiles. “Obviously COVID has happened, so I have spent most of my time very much indoors, not seeing a great many people, so it has been relatively muted. I did have about 10 new people follow me on Twitter, which was quite exciting,” he laughs, “but the flurry ended after a few days, so I had to go back to normality and accept my 300 followers or whatever it is and carry on.” It was “a totally joyous project” to work on, he tells me. “There was such a lovely atmosphere on set. It is such a big machine that when you go into it for the first time, you worry that it is going to be a bit overwhelming. But it was such a positive and relaxed atmosphere the whole time.” Credit for much of this goes to Olivia Colman, he believes. “She was wonderful to work with,” Tom recalls. “She was incredibly open and warm and friendly. And given that I had never done anything on that scale before, it just kind of settled me and made me remember how much fun the job can be. She was wonderful and I just loved being around her and watching the way that she was.” Filming for screen is a very different experience to performing on stage, something Tom has had much more experience of to date. “They are so, so different. Obviously with stage work, you get immediate feedback and
there is an extra adrenalising effect of knowing that every moment is totally precious and real and happening right now,” he explains. “But what I love about film is the sense that you are in a constant state of becoming. It is like a constant rehearsal. There’s no finished product that you are trying to re-emulate every time that you do it. There’s this constant feeling of moulding. And because so much is done for you – the fact that you are literally sitting in a palace or a stately home when you are filming these scenes – you don’t have to imagine or energetically push, you can just inhabit the scene in such a unique way.” Acting has been part of Tom’s life plan for almost as long as he can remember. “At age eight I played a part called Inspector Secticide in a school production,” he recalls. “I was a posh detective and I just really threw myself into it. I put on a ridiculous voice and it seemed to go down really well. So, from the age of eight, my head was turned. I think I realised, maybe this is how I get attention. I then did some stuff with the local am dram group and the progression began from there.” With the support and encouragement of his parents, he went on to study at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School at age 19. “I guess what I love about acting – and it’s quite hard to reduce it down to a pithy sentence – is that I have always found it a really great tool to empathise with unusual people,” he explains. “Getting my mind to think as another person – I think my favourite moments as an actor are when I find myself having thoughts that I never would’ve synthesised myself were it not for the part I was playing.” So, whose mind would he most like to inhabit, I wonder. “I have always loved The Doors, T-Rex and Bowie… I’d absolutely love to do a biopic of one of those 70s frontmen. Iggy Pop, that kind of person. It’d be amazing to get inside their heads,” he grins. As a creative outlet, music is also close to Tom’s heart. “I play the piano,” he tells me. “I started when I was nine or 10. I did my grades and earned a bit of money playing soft jazzy music in cafés in Cambridge when I was younger. It has always been a passion of mine,” he reveals. “Actually, lockdown has been great in terms of having time to do things – I have been able to write a couple of songs with my pal, which we have been developing and mixing and stuff.” It has taken his mind off the fact that, for now, there’s not much lined up in the way of future work. “I have been out of drama school for four years, and I have had periods of six, seven, eight, nine months where there hasn’t been a job. I think most actors are pretty good at dealing with that state of not being employed, but I guess because it is such a unique time at the moment, it is a bit more worrying than it would be usually,” he ponders. “But knowing that this fantastic thing that I have been able to be a part of is coming out in November has settled my nerves a little on that front. I know that I am in an incredibly fortunate position to have something like this coming out.” It is true, as opportunities come, they don’t get much bigger than this. Expect to see much more of Tom’s face over the next few years. The Crown streams on Netflix later this month

No compromises: SANTE + WADE make beautiful shoes for women with larger feet
Look good, feel better FASHION
SANTE + WADE x Solace We’re long-time fans of footwear label SANTE + WADE, who make beautiful shoes in sizes 38-46, in standard and wide fittings, for women with larger feet who may have traditionally been forced to compromise on fit, comfort and style. Channelling serious 80s chic, their new Coco boot is made of buttery soft Nappa leather: calf length with a pointed toe, it features a comfortable kitten heel and slouchy silhouette and we love everything about it. Not least the news that they are donating 25 per cent of proceeds to London charity Solace. Working with survivors of all forms of violence and abuse, Solace deliver a range of empowering services that support women and children, from the point of crisis to recovery and independence. Their services are holistic and trauma-informed, responding to individual needs. With female empowerment at the heart of SANTE + WADE, this initiative is especially important to founders Shola Asante, Agnès Cushnie and Marcy Oni. £250 (santewade.com; solacewomensaid.org)
SELF-CARE
Mist opportunity How are your hands faring with all the extra washing and sanitising now that the central heating has kicked in? Holistic skincare brand AMLY are offering a kinder way to purify, protect and prevent this winter. Their new Purifying Hand Mist is a potent pocket-sized sanitiser that has been formulated to care for the skin, too. Formulated with a 62 per cent alcohol content (60 per cent is recommended by the World Health Organisation) and comprising the reassuring scents of thyme, rosemary, juniper, ylang ylang and cedarwood, this mighty mist combats bacteria and germs with immediate effect, while calming chamomile is kind to the skin. For the ultimate protective package, team it with one of AMLY’s gorgeous Liberty print triple-layer face masks, lined in beautifully soft silk crêpe de chine to help avoid crease marks or micro-friction against the skin. The natural fibre’s temperature-regulating properties also benefit the complexion.

Lux Lights at STIL Salon
BEAUTY
Hand care with heart
I came out of spring’s lockdown vowing to make changes to the way I lived; some big, some more superficial. My hair fell on the latter list: unsurprisingly, my signature highlights did not weather months of neglect well. Much as I longed to get them redone when salons reopened, part of me hesitated, wondering if there might come a time when visits to the hairdresser were off the agenda again. A low maintenance, natural look was clearly key. And I wasn’t the only one feeling this way – Christel Barron-Hough, influential colourist and founder of Notting Hill’s STIL has designed a whole new colouring technique to reflect this new desire. She describes Lux Lights as a ‘twinning technique’ that builds a beautiful halo of light throughout the hair, perfectly mirroring its natural colour. It’s been designed to be low maintenance, with seamless, barelythere re-growth. Just what I’m looking for. Chic, airy and modern, the salon feels welcoming even with the COVID restrictions
Tom Daxon fans, listen up: over two years in the making, the perfumer has applied the principles used to create his fine fragrances to produce Gloved, a hydrating handwash and instantly absorbed hand cream duo. The cedarwood, lime and juniper scented, dermatologically tested formulas are made using the same quality essential oils as his fragrances, meaning they smell as good as your signature scent. Cedarwood has been chosen not just for its irresistible fragrance, but also it anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties – and it’s a super scent-neutraliser, obliterating nasty odours like garlic and onion. One hundred per cent vegan and packaged in glass bottles with reusable pumps – the £1 charged for each pump goes directly to Surfers Against Sewage – you can be assured that these hero products care for the planet as much as they do your hands.
in place. There are just six styling stations, and with only one other customer in during my visit, social distancing is easy. I describe the look I’d like to achieve to my stylist Anna, and after going through some images, we settle on a suitable style. I’ve been wondering if wearing masks will make the whole process feel awkward, but we’re soon chatting away as if nothing were different. Foils applied, I’m left to enjoy a latte and to catch up on some emails. When it comes to time for my wash, I’m offered a hydrating treatment using TIGI Copyright Care products, and a glorious head massage, complete with essential oils. I have so missed these little indulgences and they are so very welcome. One blow dry later and I’m a new woman. Me, but lighter, brighter and ready to face the new normal. LSJ

Feast your eyes on this month’s finest RECIPE
Ollie’s roast potatoes
SERVES 6
Exciting news from a Heath-side favourite: Ollie Pudney and Joe Swiers of The Bull & Last have produced a book revealing the secrets behind dishes like their killer Scotch eggs. Much more than simply a cookbook, though, it also tells the stories of the pub’s loyal customers and four-legged friends, explores the history of the Heath and shares anecdotes from staff. To celebrate its release, we asked the boys to share one of their favourite recipes: they’ve chosen their classic roasties. Ollie says: “Serve these crispy little numbers with our roast beef or roast chicken, or with something Middle Eastern, perhaps our lamb ribs. I find that a very heavy castiron oven tray produces the best roasties, but if you don’t have one, just use your heaviest roasting tin. Leave out the pistachios and chilli if you want more traditional roasts.”
INGREDIENTS 2kg Maris Piper potatoes, peeled and cut into even-sized chunks | 5–6 tbsp light rapeseed oil | 20g unsalted butter, diced | 10g thyme leaves, roughly chopped | 50g unsalted pistachios, roughly chopped | 1 red chilli, finely chopped (or 2, if you want the potatoes to have a proper kick) | sea salt
METHOD Preheat the oven to 200°C. Place the potato chunks in a large saucepan and cover with cold water. Add a good pinch of salt. Bring the water to the boil and cook the potatoes for 10–15 minutes, or until you can push a knife into the centre of a piece of potato without too much resistance (you want them par-cooked, not fully cooked). Drain through a colander and ruffle them a little, being careful not to break them up. Pour the rapeseed oil into a heavy cast-iron oven tray (or non-stick roasting tin) – you want enough to cover the base of the tray – and place it in the oven to heat up for 5 minutes. When the oil is very hot, remove the tray and carefully tip the boiled potatoes into the tray. Baste the potatoes in the oil then return the tray to the oven. Leave them to roast for about 20 minutes, then remove the tray and turn the potatoes. Return to the oven and continue to turn them every 15–20 minutes, until they are crisp and golden on all sides – they will need about 1 hour in the oven. Remove from the oven when the potatoes are ready, and while they’re still in the tray season with salt, and add the butter and the thyme. I love this moment – it makes a few crackles and pops! Move the spuds around in the tray so they all get that buttery crust, tip in the pistachios and chilli and toss again. Remove from the roasting tray and serve. Chef’s Note: If you want to get ahead, par-cook the potatoes the day before you want to serve them, ruffle them as above, then lay them out on a tray, cool then chill in the fridge overnight. This will help them dry out and can actually improve them when roasted. The Bull & Last by Ollie Pudney and Joe Swiers, £30. Published November 5 (thebullandlast.co.uk)

FOOD&DRINK NEW OPENING
All aboard for cheese LONDON FOODIE
Adrian Martin
Chef and owner, Wildflower What’s your signature dish? It changes quite a bit, but at the moment as we’ve recently reopened the restaurant, I’ve been cooking one of the vegetarian dishes from our menu a lot. It’s called ‘braised hen of the woods’ – salt baked celeriac, beer onions and truffle. We grate the truffle at the table to the customers’ liking so they can really get a good whack of the fresh truffle!
Exciting news for fans of Pick & Cheese and The Cheese Bar this month: founder Mathew Carver will finally be launching his new restaurant, The Cheese Barge. Originally scheduled to open in the spring, the double decker barge has spent the last six months self-isolating in Somerset and is now ready to permanently moor on the Grand Union Canal at Paddington Central. Designed by Adam Richards Architects, the boat features a beautiful copper ‘veil’ acting as an awning for the 40 cover lower deck dining room. Championing small producer British cheese, highlights of the menu include Windrush Goats’ Curd with lamb scrumpets and pickled walnuts; Cropwell Bishop Stilton ‘Devils on Horseback’ – medjool dates stuffed with Stilton and wrapped in bacon; and Maida Vale, a washed rind cheese from Village Maid, served on treacle soda bread with smoked mackerel and green sauce. Mathew says: “Our excitement for this project has never waned, and myself and the team couldn’t be more excited to share this INCREDIBLE vessel with everyone. British cheese on a boat, what’s not to love?” Our sentiments exactly. The Cheese Barge is due to open early this month at Sheldon Square, Paddington Central, W2 (thecheesebar.com/paddington/)
What do you cook on your days off? As I’m cooking all the time, and often quite elaborate tasting menu style cooking, when I’m switched off I always go for the simple dishes – nostalgic things like a simple carbonara, roast dinners or a good curry.
Head cheesemonger Sam Wilkin will be curating a rotating list of seasonal British cheeses
Best meal you’ve ever eaten? This is such a tough one, but it’s probably the dinner I had at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay. I just thought the food and the experience were incredible, and I’m not sure I’ve had anything quite like it since. Guilty food pleasure? Biscuits. I’m obsessed with Kerrygold shortbread biscuits. My grandmother nicknamed me ‘biscuit face’ years ago and it stuck. If you could cook for anyone, who? My girlfriend Hannah, always. What should no kitchen be without? Sharp knives. They make your life so much easier, and everything so much quicker. Definitely worth investing in.
Adrian’s debut restaurant is Camden High Street’s only fine dining restaurant, and the first in London inside a shipping container. It originally opened in March this year and reopened in July. Camden (Buck Street) Market, Camden High Street, NW1 (07799 357396; wildflowerrestaurant. co.uk)
RECIPE BOXES
Laura Jackson x Restaurant Kits There’s much to be thankful for right now – hear us out… In a year when businesses were forced to close, or open with restrictions, many have been thinking outside the box. Some savvy sorts have even seized the opportunity to launch new ventures, like Restaurant Kits, which specialises in delivering signature dish kits from the UK’s most loved independent restaurants and chefs. And, excitingly, they’ve just announced a partnership with Laura Jackson of Hoste London. In the absence of real life supperclubs, the ‘Make a meal of it’ Hoste boxes take inspiration from Laura’s #makeamealofit movement that took Instagram by storm during lockdown.

On the tiles
Bert & May are perhaps best known for their intricate and heavily patterned tiles inspired by the cool, Mediterranean floors of yesteryear. Their latest launch, however, celebrates graphic simplicity and we are swooning over this paredback modernist look. Taking a design cue from graph paper, four complementary tiles, Grid 01, Grid 04, Grid Line and Linear, form the collection. And while each design is a standalone statement, the tiles can also be combined to playfully produce infinite layouts and personalised patterns. Permission to get creative. From £150 per sq m or £6 per tile (bertandmay.com)
In a nutshell
“Sustainability isn’t just about where the materials come from, or the manufacturing process,” says Joe Lyster, designer-maker and founder of Lumo Lights. “It’s about what happens after our products are purchased and installed in the home.” The brand, launched in 2016, offers a collection of beautifully hand-crafted pendants and lamps with clean, contemporary silhouettes. The lights are made from reclaimed materials and importantly, are designed to be lit and loved for years to come. Take it from us, the Nut Husk pendant is a keeper. £175 (lumolights.co.uk)
Hounds at home
For architectural photographer Nicole England, her favourite interior shots are the ones in which the family pooch has wandered into frame, suddenly bringing the property’s décor to life in the homeliest of ways. Published this month, Resident Dog (Volume 2) celebrates just that – proud pups from around the world showing off their beautiful pads. With more than 25 properties featured, from London to Sydney to Mexico City, we’re guided – by the most important members of the family – through some of the globe’s most stunning residences. £30, hardback,

THE LUXE FACTOR
Contemporary bathroom design often borrows from hotel-level luxury: season upon season we’ve seen opulent textures and gilded accessories ornament our bathing spaces. This autumn/ winter, we’re upping the luxury even further to create stylish at-home sanctuaries WORDS by ALI HOWARD
The metallics trend is one that sees no sign of fading. A few gold, bronze or copper accents are all that’s needed to elevate our bathroom décor from drab to dazzling. In this luxurious bathing space, a statement gold bath is accented with DelightFULL’s Hendrix wall sconces. Inspired by the form of a record player, the lights are hand-made in brass with a gold-plated finish and boast a trio of symmetrical light sources. These allow the softly diffused light to bounce around the bathroom beautifully, creating the perfect atmosphere in which to lie back, relax and listen to our favourite tracks. €390 (delightfull.eu)
Rich visual textures in walls, floors and splashbacks can provide a mood-lifting dose of glamour – think stylish hotel bathrooms clad floor-to-ceiling in cool marble. Created in collaboration with British illustrator Julie Ingham, the range celebrates colour and pattern, reimagining retro ceramics for today. Owen has made a name for himself restoring fireplaces – anything from the 16th century to the present day
At home with
OWEN PACEY
With a clientele that includes Naomi Campbell, this fireplace and antiques specialist is in high demand. Suitably, his own apartment is A-list glamorous WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by GRAHAM ATKINS HUGHES
As the founder of Renaissance London, a dealer of fireplaces and other eclectic salvaged artefacts, it’s entirely fitting that Owen’s property is, in itself, a repurposed one. The east London building was once a thriving public house before being converted into offices. Now it combines a luxurious apartment with commodious showroom space below for Renaissance. The company specialises in antique fireplaces, but beyond that, the shop is a veritable treasure trove of pre-loved furniture, sculpture and vintage homewares. “It hasn’t been a pub since the 1970s,” Owen tells me. “I got very lucky! We basically converted it into a massive apartment upstairs – we have three double bedrooms with en suites. And we have a large basement as well as an old printworks next door, so there’s a huge warehouse.” Naturally, the flat, which Owen shares with his girlfriend, is filled with art and antiques. Even the sleek contemporary kitchen is not without a huge brass horse sculpture ornamenting the worktop. I wonder if, given that he has a wealth of incredible antique finds at his fingertips, Owen isn’t ever tempted to over-furnish. How does he know when it’s the right time to step back and award the pieces the light and space they deserve? “I just play around with things,” he explains, simply. “I mean, luckily I’ve got the shop so I can try something out and obviously, if I don’t like it, I can change it.” I suggest that Owen must be a natural when it comes to interior design and putting a room together. “I think with interiors it’s just common sense really,” he laughs. “But my granny always used to say to me that common sense isn’t that common… I suppose it does come naturally, just because I’ve been doing it for so long. I mean, I’ll often go onto a site and I’ll say to someone, ‘do that, that and that, and it’ll work,’ and they’ll be like, ‘oh I didn’t think of that!’ – so yeah, I suppose it does. Maybe I should charge for it!”

Get Owen onto the subject of sustainability and he lights up quicker than one of his reclaimed fireplaces: “I have a huge bee in my bonnet with stoves at the moment,” he tells me, “because stoves have become very popular in the last ten years and they’re the most unsustainable product on the market. They all burn logs. I just don’t get it!” For him, the antiques industry was always about sustainability, long before sustainability became a buzzword. “We’ve been in the business of recycling for 30 years. It’s always been about restoration and bringing something back to life again,” he says. Early adopters, indeed. He explains to me some of the processes behind installing a reclaimed fireplace and recalls one particular job that was quite an undertaking: “We fitted a fireplace in Marylebone, in a mews house, and it took us a week where the average fireplace takes half a day. But you could walk inside this one. It was a massive Italian fireplace out of a castle. This lady had knocked two mews houses together and taken a floor out, so she’s got this incredible double-height mews.” I wonder how and where his career restoring fireplaces started, and sure enough, Owen has a beguiling backstory. He tells me that he was “at a bit of a loss, really” and that he had “lost everything in the crash when Thatcher was around.”

AT HOME WITH From an imposing light fitting on the stairway to the huge brass horse on the kitchen counter and the Louis XVI bed, everything in Owen’s home tells a story
It transpires that, as a younger man, Owen was in fact homeless, before he got a job stripping pine furniture. “I was earning 20 quid a day and I was happy with that, living in a squat in King’s Cross and staying out of trouble,” he explains. “But I couldn’t believe that you could just put something in a caustic tank and for it to come out without the paint on. We started doing a few fireplaces in the tank and it went on from there, really. This was about 27 years ago,” he says. “I mean, trust me, I’ve earned my stripes.” Anyone with a passion for the pre-loved is enthralled by the stories behind the pieces and, to form, Owen has quite a few. That his showroom flooring is reclaimed from the Sadler’s Wells stage is just one of them. I’m more than intrigued. “That was in the days when you could literally walk onto a building site and ask them if there’s any salvage,” he says. “Sadler’s Wells is just up the road and I remember, we’d just got hold of the shop and were gutting it and I went past and I just asked. The builder pointed to the floor and said, ‘yep, all that’s coming up,’ and I said ‘how much?’ I think we gave him a tenner a bag. I had about 40 bags off him. You couldn’t do that now. It’s illegal!” He goes on to tell me about his amazing gilded Louis XVI bed: “It’s quite a bed, isn’t it! We bought it off friends of ours, La Maison London.” And the vintage Gucci dressing room mirrors: “They were from a guy who’d had them in storage for about 30 years. He was a sort of high-end shop fitter and he had the job of refurbishing Gucci in the early ’90s.” For Owen, the apartment’s luxurious living room, with its imposing stone fireplace, its blue velvet cocktail chairs, and its enormous golden starburst chandelier, is his favourite place to relax. “I just like staring at those books,” he reveals. “I often stare at those and wonder about all the knowledge in them. But I’ve hardly read any of them. They came out of a convent in Hertfordshire.” renaissancelondon.com

“Marylebone has been enjoying a renaissance since the mid ’90s. We’ve been working in the area from those early beginnings right through to its current heady success and popularity. As the oldest established agents in Marylebone, we feel impeccably qualified to lead you through this remarkable area.”
“Situated between Regent’s Park and Hyde Park, Marylebone is a chic little area with lots of personality. My day officially starts around 7:30am, when I arrive at my clinic. However, before I get down to any work, I pop to Kiss the Hippo on Margaret Street for a black Americano to kickstart the day. I spend most of the day treating patients. As an osteopath I get to treat a real mix of different patients: I see people suffering from all sorts of different injuries and muscular skeletal problems, so making sure I know exactly what I’m dealing with in each individual patient’s situation is paramount. By the time lunchtime arrives,
I’m usually starving and in need of something healthy and nutritious to fuel me for a busy afternoon ahead. My go-to is By Chloe at Oxford Circus. The food is all plant based and they have a wide range of delicious salads to choose from – which all taste amazing! After lunch, its back to see more patients. Over the last few years I’ve built up a network of high-profile patients – including Rita Ora, Ryan Giggs and Bradley Simmonds – which is really exciting and adds even more variety to my job and the broad mix of people I treat. I love staying fit and working out to release some endorphins, especially at the start of the week
when I know I’ve got some manic days ahead; I’m a big fan of Psycle. And on the odd occasion that I have a quiet afternoon, I love treating myself to a manicure and blow dry at DryBy. To switch off after work, I often head to either the Riding House Café or Mortimer Street Kitchen. Both offer delicious food, so I’m always spoilt for choice. If I’m going for a drink, you’ll almost certainly find me on the rooftop at Madera within the Treehouse Hotel on Langham Place. The views are breathtaking!”

“My favourite road in Marylebone has to be Spanish Place. It’s only a short road off Manchester Street, which mainly consists of elegant Georgian townhouses that side onto the Wallace Collection. There’s also a very desirable small red brick mansion block called Spanish Place Mansions – the flats seldom come to the market.”

While it offers significantly better value and sense of community than nearby Mayfair, it’s equally desirable for downsizers moving from large homes in north west London, who are attracted by a more vibrant urban lifestyle.”

Marylebone locals can treat themselves to a little Viennese escape by way of this stylish eatery on the High Street. Say what?
Your home, your life
“There is nowhere in the world quite like Marylebone,” says Alex Bourne from Beauchamp Estates. “My favourite village in the city spoils for choice in so many ways, but one of the places I regularly return to, to feed my soul, is the Wallace Collection.” We couldn’t agree more. The Manchester Square museum, set in the magnificent former residence of the Seymour family, Marquesses of Hertford, offers a matchless collection of French 18th century treasures in particular, from pictures to porcelain to furniture pieces. It really is a world away from the bustle of the West End.
Have you noticed that Marylebone is one of London’s smallest and most unassuming rail terminals? In the planning stages, the Great Central Railway’s proposed route ran close to Lord’s Cricket Ground and was strongly opposed by club members, who did their best to prevent progress. Such huge sums were spent fighting their campaign that there was very little left for the station building itself! 64

Estate agents are notoriously sharp dressers, so when there’s a local menswear boutique to be recommended, take heed. Winkworth’s Jason Borrows says of this hidden gem on St Christopher’s Place: “I’ve been stopping by whenever I’m nearby for years – even just for a drink and catch up with the chaps in-store. It’s a British brand but they make everything in Italy and strike the balance well between good quality and great design. Every time I visit, they seem to have something new and interesting, so more often than not I’ll leave with something.”

Food for Thought
A touch of kindness, a smidgen of curiosity, a dollop of respect, a sprinkle of inspiration and a dusting of forgiveness: the recipe for success at one north London school
A
happy, healthy environment and an academically challenging curriculum combine at St Anthony’s School for Girls. Located at Ivy House, adjacent to Golders Hill Park, the school is a short bus ride from its sister school, St Anthony’s Boys in Hampstead. Recently buoyed by an outstanding set of 11+ results, it celebrated its first year 6 class receiving offers from some of the best academic north London schools: including Highgate, Channing, South Hampstead High, Haberdasher’s School for Girls, Francis Holland Girls, City of London, North London Collegiate and Mill Hill, and further afield Queenswood, Wycombe Abbey and St Swithun’s. The school attributes its success to committed pupils, ambitious teachers and supportive parents, all of whom embrace the recipe for success which has been established at the school. A recipe that imbues pupils with a sense of mutual respect, an awareness of self and a determination to excel in all areas. A touch of kindness never goes amiss at St Anthony’s, where it is seen as fundamental to a happy school experience. Adults model and engage in mutually respectful exchanges, which the children in turn role-play as best practice in
their relationships. It is not unusual to observe a year 6 girl taking time out from her friends at playtime to sit with a year 1 girl who is in need of some quiet solace. The girls at St Anthony’s are curious: asking big questions at Talk Time assemblies leads to robust discussions on the eternal questions. Discussions on what it means to be thoughtful, why is it difficult to share and why leaves fall from the trees are the norm. In this environment of curiosity, the girls grow in courage and confidence and can verbalise complex thoughts and feelings. Respect is witnessed at St Anthony’s in many ways, built upon the children developing a confident respect for themselves as unique, valuable individuals. All adults – from parents and teachers, to bus drivers and the chef who prepares lunch – are valued as equals in the eyes of the girls. In this way a sense of community is strengthened. And, of course, being respectful of their world and the need to be guardians for future generations, ensures that the girls are quick to respond to global and community causes: from launching an appeal to raise money for the koala bears who lost their precious habitats during last year’s devastating Australian fires, to rallying a team of litter pickers to remove the casually dropped litter from the streets surrounding St Anthony’s. Being inspired to embrace new challenges is at the heart of the school’s teaching. Enriching activities from forest school, to specialist music and drama, and Mandarin and French, to rhythmic gymnastics, ballet and sports are interwoven into the timetable, allowing the girls to develop their imaginations. From creative teaching comes a perfect blend of original and individualised responses. The clubs schedule further embeds this, with girls choosing from languages, yoga, Magic Maths, Environmental Club, debating, philosophy, Minnie Vinnies, Robotics Gymnastics, Irish dancing, football, karate and mindfulness. St Anthony’s Girls take responsibility for their actions, accepting praise, being willing to give compliments to others and understanding that at times, saying sorry is important. Sincerity and fairness matter hugely to the girls, allowing for happy confident relationships to develop at the school. This recipe for success makes St Anthony’s a very special place. All of the girls are given time to prove and gradually rise. For all at the school, the icing on the cake is to see the senior girls depart, ripe and ready for secondary school, with the ingredients for a happy and successful life securely placed in their backpacks. St Anthony’s invites you to visit and witness a school where girls are educated, enriched and empowered. Personalised tours with the Headteacher and Deputy Head are available daily. THOUGHT
Environmental science Top-quality teaching is obviously a big part of a pupil’s success, but physical environment also plays an important role. One study of UK primary schools found that seven factors of physical design accounted for 16 per cent of the total variation in pupils’ progress. The factors included light, temperature, air quality and colour. The results resonate with Alison Melrose, headmistress of Prince’s Gardens Preparatory School in Kensington. “Many academic studies show that light, airy, peaceful spaces help productivity, stimulate better results and reduce sickness absence,” she says. Her school’s new building, which opens to children in January 2021, has large windows that let in lots of natural light, along with fresh air from the square and gardens. The temperature is comfortable, and the overall environment is like a home from home. “We have cushions and carpets, which feel homely, as well as preventing sounds from bouncing off the walls,” says Alison. “There are also quiet reading huts in the library, and we just held a competition for teachers to build the best one in their classroom. We’ve had a tepee, a World War II bunker, and one of the Reception teachers brought in a boat!” Prince’s Gardens also aims to become the UK’s first fully ‘biophilic’ school, by creating a healthy, nature-filled environment that inspires a love of the outside world. This ethos is reflected in everything from the wallpaper to the house crests, which embrace themes, shapes, materials and colours from nature. There’s also lots of outdoor learning in the garden, which has a mud kitchen, sandpit and AstroTurf area.
EIFA International School How would you sum up the school in a sentence? EIFA is a truly bilingual school. We do not teach two languages; we teach IN two languages. What makes it different? We start with a bilingual programme as early as 21 months. This enables pupils to pursue a fully immersed bilingual education from a very young age up to 18 years old. How would you describe the atmosphere? With a ratio of one adult for five children, the teaching staff can dedicate every possible resource to the pupils. It creates a truly personalised educational experience.
“Many academic studies show that light, airy, peaceful spaces help productivity, stimulate better results and reduce sickness absence”
It’s a great tonic for a generation of children that plays outdoors less than any other. But not every learning environment offers such strong connections to nature. As a parent, how can you help to close the gap? “Get outside at weekends, so your children have access to nature, even if it’s just the local park,” advises Alison. “Ask them how many types of leaves they can find, or conkers they can count. And encourage younger children to use the swings and climbing frames. It’ll help them build the upper-body strength they’ll need to start writing.” princesgardensprep.co.uk

What about your personal educational ethos? My ethos meets that of the school. Our mission is enabling young children to become capable citizens of the world, with a high level of educational, physical, intellectual, emotional and ethical development. What sort of extra-curricular activities do you offer? We run a wide variety of after-school clubs from 3.30pm to 6pm. Activities include arts, languages, cultural and sporting activities. How do you look after the wellbeing of your pupils? Our classes average 15 pupils. Our pastoral coordinators organise workshops on pupils’ concerns and their wellbeing. The teaching and safeguarding teams monitor individual cases. How are you helping pupils settle back into school life after months away? The school was ready to switch to online teaching from day one of the lockdown, which allowed pupils to fulfil the curriculum as normally as possible: they were fully prepared to restart school. North London’s newest school takes a freeing approach to educating our future generation during a pandemic
A
s parents continue to navigate the new academic year around COVID-19, eager to see their children back in school and learning but fearful of the underlying threat, north London’s brand-new Nursery and PrePrep School is thriving despite the uncertain circumstances. This September, the highly successful North Bridge House School extended its unique, specialist offering to families in West Hampstead, with its sixth campus taking teaching and learning way beyond the four walls of the classroom and into a safe, progressive and enriching space. North Bridge House Nursery and Pre-Prep West Hampstead has been innovatively designed to allow continuous provision of the curriculum outdoors, using sustainable products wherever possible and combining 3D technology with a multi-sensory play space to transform the children’s learning environment. The ‘Imaginarium’ is an immersive space that transports children to the very place they are learning about – whether that be a tropical rainforest or a railway station, for example. While this state-of-the-art facility contextualises children’s studies and inspires a genuine love of learning from the outset of their education, the outdoor play area is a huge asset as both a teaching and learning environment – today more so than ever. Outdoor learning may have

been embedded into the curriculum at North Bridge House long before the current pandemic, however, it comes with a newfound appreciation since the Government outlined how transmission of the Coronavirus is significantly lower in outdoor spaces. “Whilst we have always shaped our provision around the outdoors being fundamental to growth and development in the Early Years – running everything from science and minibeast clubs to an annual petting zoo in our playgrounds – staff have embraced being able to collapse the timetable and take any lesson outside with the sheltered extension directly over the threshold of the Reception classroom,” says Executive Headteacher, Christine McLelland. Having made the NBH group’s longstanding Nursery and Pre-Prep Schools popular and high-achieving north London destinations, Christine has designed the new West Hampstead campus around inspiration taken from the Far and Middle East. “We are learning from schools in countries like Denmark, Finland and New Zealand who have pioneered outdoor learning, whilst drawing upon our own global connections. Being part of the worldwide Cognita Schools group has allowed me to visit and take influence from sister schools in Singapore, where outdoor learning is vital in the process of children developing the resilience to thrive in a globalised environment,” says the

The new school’s aim is to take children beyond the conventional and now physical constraints of the classroom and into the natural environment, where they are stimulated through all kinds of sensory, practical, and social experiences. “They are developing key social and motor skills come rain or shine, investigating, experimenting and discovering through everything from gardening and sand sifting to tending to school pets,” says Head of School Eilish Sleator. “We want to be as organic as possible and to provide the children with as many unique opportunities as possible in this central London location, including growing their own vegetables and looking after the chickens in our chicken run,” she continues. In addition to teachers being able to develop more practical methods of learning with the children, the mental health benefits of the outdoor area are huge during these formative years of education – reducing anxiety, initiating friendships, enhancing self-confidence and developing overall cognition in our youngest generation. Inside, the school facilitates not just the academic achievement of its pupils, but their all-important personal development, too, using multi-functional creative spaces for music, dance, and theatre workshops. Adopting a holistic, child centric approach to pupils’ learning and
progression, NBH Nursery and Pre-Prep West Hampstead comes with a wellbeing dog, Albert, and further enhances the growth and wellbeing of its pupils through initiatives like Philosophy for Children (P4C) and Forest School. The attainment enhancing P4C programme – already successfully practised at the NBH Nursery and Pre-Prep Schools in Hampstead – results in two-month’s additional progress in reading and maths over the course of the year, according to the Education Endowment Foundation, and sees a positive influence on wider outcomes such as pupils’ articulation, listening skills and self-esteem. It is these same outcomes that are brought to life in the 96-acre site at Cuffley Camp, where all pupils attend Forest School and are immersed in teamwork, resilience, and self-confidence building activities. “Parents have seen the impact of having their children being confined indoors, subject to greater screen time, and while our immersive technology offers something I know our competitors cannot, we want to create a healthy balance between a forward-thinking curriculum and the great outdoors. Our Forest School at Cuffley develops lifelong critical skills, connecting the mind to nature and the wider world, which is increasingly important in our diverse and cosmopolitan society. In preparing pupils for the sought after NBH Prep School – where I’m very proud to have my own son attend – without the stress of entrance exams, we have the time and resource to offer this on a bi-weekly basis,” concludes the Head of School. As the North Bridge House group grows from strength to strength; celebrating results well above the national average at every stage of its academically non-selective, independent education for ages 2 to 18; its thriving Nursery and Pre-Prep provision proves that outdoor learning is limitless and fundamental to the skills upon which children’s future successes are built.

This month’s dream homes FOR SALE Dunstable Mews, W1G
Set in a cobbled street in the heart of Marylebone Village is this perfectly pretty period mews house. While the exterior has been largely untouched – save for a fresh lick of paint and a smart, modern front door – inside you’ll find an exquisite contemporary refurbishment that makes the most of the property’s light and space. Arranged over ground and first floors, with a dramatic spiral staircase connecting the two, the two bed house boasts a pleasing symmetry and flow, with much of the ground floor kept openplan – perfect for entertaining. £2.25 million, Dexters (020 7224 5544; dexters.co.uk)
FOR SALE Oldbury Place, W1U
Marylebone is home to some beautiful period mews houses, but perhaps most impressive are the architecturally enhanced ones that are sympathetic to the original building, yet wildly creative in their contemporary expansions. This is a prime example. Deceptively spacious, this four bed, three bath residence is arranged over five floors and boasts a whopping near 3,000 sq ft of chic and modern living space at every turn. The pièce de résistance? Its doubleheight light well that floods the property with sunshine. £5.95 million, Aston Chase (020 3944 4808; astonchase.com)
FOR SALE Portland Place, W1B
You might think an asking price that’s pushing £7 million is a little steep, even for a London flat, but trust us, this is no ordinary apartment. Set over two floors, and situated in one of the Capital’s most wanted blocks, the four bed, four bath property is nothing short of spectacular. Newly refurbished and finished to the nines, the apartment boasts high ceilings and light-loving double aspect living spaces. The principle bedroom comes complete with a luxurious dressing room and en suite, while a private sauna and steam room further adds to the desirability. £6.95 million, Knight Frank (020 3435 6441; knightfrank.com)

“Boasting independent shops and boutiques, designer fashion and interiors, restaurants and cafés, Marylebone is one of central London’s most fashionable addresses. Housing stock ranges from Georgian townhouses through to cutting-edge new developments. It is the perfect neighbourhood for those who want a more relaxed way of living, without being far from the hustle and bustle.”

“Many buyers have found themselves reassessing their lifestyle during this extraordinary time, and this shift in perspective has caused a surge in demand for apartments as near as possible to green spaces like Regent’s Park. Marylebone ticks the box for those looking for a good rental investment, where walking distance to a park and restaurants is a high priority.”
“Marylebone is popular with young families wanting to be close to the schools – including the excellent Wetherby Prep School – as well as professionals wanting to enjoy all that the West End has to offer. There are also a number of doctors working in and around Harley Street who are keen to buy here to be close to their practices.”

PROPERTY Happy birthday, TK!... Twenty-two years ago, David Beckham saw World Cup red for kicking Argentina’s Diego Simeone; Spice Girl Geri Halliwell’s iconic Union Jack dress sold at Sotheby’s for over £41,000; while over the pond, Bill Clinton was busy getting impeached. In quieter news, it was in that same year that Fabric agents TK International found their forever home in Hampstead Village. Here’s to the next 22 years of history-making success! (t-k.co.uk)
Property news
Market insight from our agents ON THE MARKET
A glass act While London property shouldn’t really be about superlatives – it’s an emotive subject, these are family homes – please allow us a moment of indulgence as we swoon over this one. Reported to be Mayfair’s most expensive ever new build, this £50 million glass mansion has just been unveiled in Down Street Mews. Inspired by the famed 1930s-built Maison de Verre in Paris, it is an architectural triumph, both contrasting with, and complementing its period neighbours. In fact, the building consists of two imposing glass houses, which can be easily configured into one – for property seekers with extra deep pockets,
that is. The mansion boasts a wealth of super-luxe features, as you’d imagine: cinema, private spa with swimming pool, 1,251 sq ft roof garden… we could go on. Gary Hersham, of joint sole agents Beauchamp Estates says: “These magnificent glass houses allow the buyer to completely control access to their home and living environment in a private and secure address which is hidden off Down Street and protected by two sets of entry gates. The clear and frosted glass façades, and the floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights allow light to cascade into the living spaces, providing an extremely bright and airy ambience.” (020 7499 7722; beauchamp.com)

It’s certainly contributed to the overall strength of the housing market since it re-opened in May, but it hasn’t been the only factor. While the potential £15,000 savings to a home buyer are significant, pent-up demand since 2016, combined with lockdown-induced lifestyle changes have been the main drivers. Assuming the stamp duty holiday ends in March, we expect to see a spike in transactions in Q1 2021. But the outlook for the housing market is dependent on more than a stamp duty holiday alone.
