Christmas is coming…
Speaking from bitter experience, December is no time for Christmas shopping. Not only are the shops intolerably busy, but once those advent doors start opening, the feeling of panic well and truly sets in. Seize the moment and get going now, with a little inspiration from our gift guide, which is full of beautiful objets – a celebration of unique design. While we’re on the subject of Christmas, now is the time to think about your decorations. We’re eschewing tinsel for trend-led pieces, and if you fancy following suit, we’ve sought out some expert advice and unearthed the best of this year’s decs. Don’t worry though, this issue isn’t all about Christmas; if all this chat is making you feel antsy, you might want to check out our travel pages, where there are several ideas to help you escape the festive frenzy. Come back soon though…

16 NOV-8 FEB NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY, WC2H Open to everyone, from talented amateurs through to famous photographers, the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize has grown from an art-world award to an essential diary date for culturally literate Londoners. And this year there’s a twist: digital submissions have been invited for the very first time, widening the range of people who are eligible to enter. From documentary-style stills to perfectly posed shots, one thing is clear: whether in digital or analogue, the uncanny sense of a sitter’s eyes staring back at you remains undimmed.

OU T OF DA R KN E SS
Sculpture meets painting in this new interdisciplinary art show by Louise de Lima and Paul Vanstone. The show’s title – Out of Darkness – has been interpreted differently by each artist: for Louise, it’s about the light of hope appearing in seemingly hopeless situations, whereas Paul compares it to the way his pieces emerge out of the shadows as they are carved. Whatever the inspiration, the result is a rich mix of chocolate hues and organic textures, with a depth that comes from combining 3D works with hanging canvasses. We love.

And yet, could it be that your little one has simply never had the chance to enjoy a concert first-hand? Offering a baby-friendly environment, Bach to Baby recitals are the brainchild of concert pianist Miaomiao Yu and are designed to eliminate those disapproving looks if your child has a mid-performance meltdown. This month’s programme celebrates the timeless melodies of Broadway. Now that’s entertainment.

There are manicures, and then there’s the Gold Kissed manicure from Mayfair go-to Nails & Brows. The boutique salon has been firmly in our Little Black Book since it opened in 2014, not just because its location means it is the perfect pit stop on shopping trips to town, but also because the service is always second to none, and the results are brilliant – quite literally, in the case of their newest manicure. It uses 24-carat gold leaf to accent Shellac in the colour of your choice. I’ve found the perfect LBD for a big party, booked to have my hair done and new nails are to be the finishing touch. Usually the understated type (ahem), I’m a bit apprehensive about the idea of going for gold. And nail art isn’t typically my thing. But my therapist, Claire, assures me that this is a very grown-up look, and can be as subtle, or as bling-tastic as I want. Reassured, I settle in and let her work her magic. Before getting creative with the precious metal, Claire spends time filing, buffing and getting my cuticles into shape, while I peruse the colours. I’m tempted by a very light pink, which Claire says has been very popular since the treatment launched, but at this time of year it feels wrong to go for anything other than fully festive in rich berry red. Once the colour coat is done, the tiniest flecks of gold are applied in a fading pattern on the tips of the ring and middle fingers of both my hands. Afterwards, I can’t stop admiring my shiny nails – it turns out I am the nail art type, after all. And I manage to pick up a few Christmas gifts at the same time. Not just a talented manicurist, but a great salesperson, too, Claire talks me into buying some lovely products from the salon’s own brow enhancing collection, Beauty Edit Mayfair, plus a rather brilliant pawpaw-infused Gentle Healing Balm from The Gentle Label and a gift card with a package of six treatments, which includes six complementary mini treatments. I haven’t quite decided who gets what, and I can’t guarantee that everything will make it out of my now sparkly grasp… LSJ The Gold Kissed manicure, £66. 31 Berkeley Street, W1J (020 7499 5245; nailsandbrows.me)

STYLE & WELLBEING
Get set to sparkle If you’re looking for a gift they’ll love long after the last of the unloved Quality Streets have been consumed, jewellery is always a good option. Diamonds are forever, as they say. But with such a personal gift, it’s not always easy to get it right. Step up VASHI, Piccadilly’s new diamond store, complete with its own on-site diamond lab, where customers are encouraged to get truly hands-on, designing and even helping to create their own dream piece. Explaining the concept behind the shop, jeweller Vashi Dominguez says: “We always prefer you to handpick your own diamond, to play with them while you choose the one that appeals most to you, and then to put your own heart into making your jewellery, with us as your support crew.” Just brilliant. 46 Piccadilly, W1J (0800 530 0541; vashi.com)
AND SO TO SLEEP These days a simple stocking won’t suffice, now the kids want a Christmas Eve box, too, providing all the ingredients for a cosy family night in, thus adding a whole new dimension to Christmas shopping lists. But while we might moan about it, we rather love the idea. We’ll be getting in on the act this year with some new PJs for ourselves. And this stylish cotton “granddad” set looks just perfect. Designed by Queen’s Park local Sally Roberts and made from 100 per cent cotton, they are oh-so wearable. And their star motif couldn’t be more Christmassy. Before you check out, take a few moments to discover the rest of the Somerville Scarves collection, which might just inspire you with a few present ideas, too. Snuggly slipper socks, cute cashmere beanies, pretty pashminas and beautiful bags are just some of the luscious loot on offer in Sally’s online store. Long cotton PJ star set, £95 (somervillescarves.com)
LA MAISON HÉDONIQUE With no formal training, Lucy Akhurst is a bit of a maverick in the fragrance world. Having long sought a signature scent for herself, and finding nothing that clicked, she bought a fragrance kit and set about composing for herself, following her heart to create something that not only smelled good, but also haunted the wearer. The resulting capsule collection of scents, which launch later this month, feels beguilingly personal and unique. Created with the highest quality rare ingredients and beautifully minimalist in appearance, these creations make for a truly special gift. And for the ultimate present, Lucy offers a bespoke fragrance blending service. For more details, see lamaisonhedonique.com

’TIS THE SEASON
Written in the stars This year’s Michelin guide has just landed, and with it, good news for London’s foodies. No restaurants lost stars this year, and with 10 new stars across the Capital, the city’s total now stands at 70. One of the biggest winners was Mitsuhiro Araki’s rather special The Araki, which scooped two extra stars to become one of just three London restaurants to hold three stars, and the first Japanese restaurant in the UK to hold that accolade. Claude Bosi was awarded two stars for Bibendum, while six restaurants were awarded one star, amongst them Fabric favourites Aquavit, Le Dame de Pic and Jamavar. Ten London restaurants were also awarded Bib Gourmands.
A TASTE OF CHRISTMAS Move over mince pies, there’s a new taste of Christmas on the block. Joel Braham, Alex Coppard and Oded Mizrachi, founders of The Good Egg, have become known for playing fast and loose with Jewish culinary traditions. Their limited edition babka comes twisted with marzipan and packed with currants, golden raisins, cranberries and spiced butter, all topped off with toasted almonds and oozing with sweet, sticky syrup. Available from their original Stoke Newington deli, as well as the brand new all-day restaurant, bakery and bar in Kingly Court, you can pre-order to pick it up fresh from the oven. We guarantee it won’t make it home in one piece. Unit G9, Kingly Court, Carnaby Street, W1B (thegoodeggn16.com)
Amid the parties and presents, it’s easy to forget those less fortunate; that’s where StreetSmart comes in. In the words of advocate Stephen Fry, “Its ambitions are to connect the lucky citizen who can dine out with the unlucky ones for whom dining out means queueing up in front of food banks.” Celebrating its twentieth birthday this year, the charity has raised over £8.2 million for homeless and vulnerable people across the UK. Through the months of November and December, participating restaurants (including the likes of Gymkhana, 10 Greek Street, Lemonia and Yasmeen) ask diners to add a pound on to their bill, which – thanks to sponsorship by Deutsche Bank – is donated in full to reputable local charities supporting homeless people (Cafe from Crisis, House of St Barnabas and The Marylebone Project among them). As Mr Fry says, “One pound may be a drop in the ocean, but the ocean is made up of drops. And there are millions of us…” For more information on the work of StreetSmart, and to see a full list of participating restaurants, see streetsmart.org.uk

FOOD & DRINK Speaking of the new restaurant, Adam says: “I want it to be unlike anything else currently in Covent Garden”
UP ON THE ROOF Christmas shopping in the West End? We suggest a little post retail therapy in the shape of Woody Bear, an exciting new rooftop bar entered via a secret entrance on the corner of Marble Arch and Park Lane. The first wintertime pop up at 535 Oxford Street – home to summer hit Sisu – is inspired by an abandoned fairground, and brought to life with animal see-saws, swings and repurposed seating booths made from teacup fairground rides. Warming eggnog and hot gin punch cocktails are served from a coinoperated dispenser. Park yourself under a heater, wrap up in a blanket and toast the season while taking in the unrivalled skyline views. Ever the advocates of sensible drinking, we recommend lining your stomach with a delicious bite from street food vendors Madame & Monsieur. Their melty London raclette on potatoes is served from a mega 6kg wheel. Swoon. 535 Oxford Street, W1C (woodybear.london)
Hot table...
THE FROG Adam Handling has talent (and then some). At just 25 he reached the finals of MasterChef: The Professionals. A year later he was crowned British Culinary Federation Chef of the Year, then Scottish Chef of the Year. Unsurprising, then, that before The Frog E1 opened, the waiting list for a table was two weeks long. The restaurant has since won a Bib Gourmand and been named London Restaurant of the Year and UK Restaurant of the Year in the Food and Travel awards. I book well in advance for his new flagship’s opening… The site, in Covent Garden, promises a large open-plan kitchen and private dining room with its own kitchen and speakeasy-style basement bar. And a menu built on The Frog E1’s foundations – Adam is known for his careful sourcing of seasonal ingredients and a particular focus on Asian flavours and techniques. It has a more formal feel than its Shoreditch sibling, but with graffiti-esque artwork adorning one wall it is by no means straight-laced. With its big windows and open-plan kitchen, it is bright and lively on a sunny weekday lunchtime, and the staff could not be more welcoming. We opt for the five-course tasting menu, with matched wines – all the better to experience what’s on offer – and are bowled over from the minute the first of the snacks arrive. Adam’s famous chicken butter is everything we’ve been led to expect, with the addition of oozing, rich gravy in the centre. We spread the bread thickly and aren’t ashamed to lick the butter dish clean. Beef tartare served on seaweed crackers with a hint of anchovy is also excellent. First up of the “main” dishes is a kingfish ceviche. Served with jalapeno and avocado it is a delicious twist on a Japanese favourite. Next up a celeriac and truffle
dish first created for Adam’s newly vegetarian mother – we think she probably approves. The halibut that follows is my favourite though, served on a bed of crab and in a pool of an exquisitely moreish lobster custard that I think I could happily slurp from a soup bowl. We finish with the blackberry dessert – light-as-air sponge with the freshest cucumber sorbet and impressive “nitro” meringues, created at the table in a sea of dry ice. It is truly memorable (but heed my advice and wait for the ice to clear before tucking in). From start to finish the meal is a triumph. Divinely presented, theatrically delivered and perfectly matched with some really individual wines. We’ll be back, and urge you to come, too. Hop to it… LSJ 34-35 Southampton Street, WC2E (020 7199 8370; frogbyadamhandling.com)
THESE SHOES WERE MADE FOR WALKING While you might think you know the Capital inside out, it’s always good to see it from a different point of view – and there’s no better time to take in the sights than with all the Christmas lights twinkling. European sensation, Walking Dinner has just introduced its famous culinary walking tours to London, combining to-die-for tucker with a 30-minute walk taking in some of the Capital’s most famous landmarks. After enjoying a starter of beef carpaccio at Villandry, guests work up an appetite during the stroll to Bank Westminster, where they tuck into duck with honey roast apples, before moving on to end the evening with a well-deserved strawberry mascarpone tart at Brumus. This one’s definitely not just for tourists. £58.95 per person. To book and for more details, see walkingdinner.com

Chef at Ella Canta When I was a child I wanted to be… a curator in a modern art museum. The first thing I cooked was… exotic tamales, with my artist mother. Game season has been very much game on for a couple of months now, providing us with the perfect opportunity to go wild in the kitchen. If, like us, you’ve been struggling to know how to make the most of it at home, take inspiration from this Michelin-starred recipe from Atul Kochhar of Mayfair favourite, Benares – modern Indian flavours with a distinctive British twist. And if you’re not inclined to get your hands dirty at home, you can still taste the dish for yourself, as it’s currently on the menu at Benares. 12a Berkeley Square House, W1J (020 7629 8886; benaresrestaurant.com)

Remove the legs from the carcasses individually. Split each bird down the back, then using a sharp knife, cut through the carcass either side of the backbone. Flatten out, then carefully remove the rib bones. Heat a saucepan, add the tamarind pulp, jaggery, fennel powder, ginger powder, cloves, cardamom and half a cup of water and simmer until mixture is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Strain the sauce and leave it to cool down. Make a marinade with the tamarind sauce, yoghurt, chilli powder, garam masala, ginger and garlic pastes, oil and salt. Whisk to a smooth consistency, then rub on to the quails and leave, covered with cling film, in a refrigerator for a minimum of 6 hours. Meanwhile, remove the skin from the corn cobs. begin to brown evenly and soften. Remove from the heat, allow to cool slightly and trim the kernels from the cob with a sharp knife. Cut the cucumber into fine dice, lightly salt and leave in a refrigerator for an hour. Once the cucumber has softened, mix with corn kernels, chilli flakes and lemon juice. Slice off the kernels from the remaining cob. Place in a pan with half a cup of water, butter, whipping cream, cumin seeds, green chilli, chopped ginger, salt, lemon juice and turmeric powder. Bring to the boil and simmer until the kernels are soft. Whizz in a blender until smooth, strain. Skewer the quail supremes and legs, and bake them in a preheated oven at 200°C/ fan 180°C/gas mark 6 for 10 minutes, or cook on a barbeque. Serve the grilled quail on a bed of corn purée with salsa sprinkled on top.

THE PERFECT FUSION Antoine Christoforou, managing director of Fusion, explains how the company has built an unrivalled reputation through a combination of iconic design and quality craftsmanship Can you tell us a bit about Fusion? We’re an award-winning boutique design house. Established in 2006, we create exceptional residences in the most exclusive locations around London. In just over 10 years we have built a strong reputation within the industry and we are known for our blend of iconic design and the highest quality of craftsmanship. Every member of our multidisciplinary team is passionate about being the best at what we do. And how did you personally get into property? What was the appeal? I started my career in 2003, in a residential agency. Two years later I met my now partner in a restaurant and we started working together. I knew from a very young age that property was for me: I always loved the idea of being able to leave a legacy. There are very few industries where you can be so expressive, so entrepreneurial and meet so many different people, all at the same time. What can buyers expect from a Fusion home? A very special residence that they can be immensely proud of, and one that is truly unique. How have buyers’ expectations evolved in terms of luxury in and around London? Our clients are very discerning and they have a right to be, especially at this level of the market. They are used to enjoying the finest things in life without having to make any compromises, and this is what they expect from our residences and the service they receive from our team. Today, nothing should be unobtainable or unachievable, so our clients expect us to have considered every detail and they want to receive world-class service at every step of the process. How do the wider team of designers, architects and landscapers work together to create a Fusion home? We work with some of the most passionate and talented professionals from around the globe. At the start of every project we carefully select the right team and bring everyone together to run through the project brief. There are so many intricate details to think about, so we absolutely cannot compromise when we are putting together a team. We only ever work with the best. What does the next year hold for the new homes market in London? The property market is very volatile at the moment, with so

many external factors at play. There are, however, always serious buyers in the market. Of course, they will only make their move if they find a dream residence that ticks all of their boxes. We are selling lifestyles, not just property, and attention to detail is everything. Can you tell us about some of the developments you are currently marketing? Our latest project – The Birchwood – in Park View Road, Ealing, W5, is due to launch shortly. The Birchwood comprises six bespoke lateral apartments, with gated underground parking, private concierge facilities and expansive open-air terraces. Everything has been completed to an exceptionally high specification that has
never before been witnessed in Ealing. The Garden Apartment has already been sold, off plan, and prices for the other apartments start from £1.95 million. The Penthouse has 360-degree views across London, to the Shard and beyond. With the launch of Crossrail next year, travel time from Ealing to Bond Street will be just 11 minutes. What’s next for Fusion? We have just started work on an exciting scheme in Hertfordshire, called The Radlett, which will comprise 10 beautifully appointed two- and three-bedroom apartments. It is due for completion in 2019. fusionresidential.co.uk

Best of British Fancy a bit of R’n’R before party season hits fever pitch? If you get in quickly, you could be one of the first to experience an exciting transformation at The Swan Southwold, which first opened in the 1600s. The hotel, which is owned by Adnams brewery, has been completely redesigned by award-winning, London-based Project Orange. The team have retained many

LET IT SNOW Suffering from Alpine apathy? This year we’re planning on skiing stateside. Aspen might seem like a long way to go for your snow, but it didn’t become one of the world’s most famous ski resorts for nothing. Equally appealing to advanced skiers, absolute beginners, families, couples and singles, here you really can have everything. Small wonder it has become synonymous with the jet set and renowned for being home to some of the most luxurious ski hotels in the world. And the best known of these, The Little Nell – Aspen’s only five-star, five-diamond hotel – is better than ever this season, following a stunning makeover earlier in the year. “The Little Nell’s new design recalls in texture, tone and attitude, Aspen’s soul and its distinctiveness as a silver mining town,” says Alexandra Champalimaud, founder and president of Champalimaud Design, who are responsible for the gorgeous new look. You can expect light and welcoming spaces, superior craftsmanship and elegant styling. See you on the slopes. thelittlenell.com

Lakeside living
A contemporary Cotswold retreat with a sprinkling of A-list glamour provides the perfect venue for a weekend away with the whole family WO RDS L I Z S KO N E JA M E S
Photography: Mel Yates
here are big birthdays on the horizon… Tasked with planning a gathering for the extended family, I am aghast at the idea of actually “hosting”. While some people have entire guest suites decked out with fluffy towels, 200 thread count Egyptian cotton sheets and scented candles, ever ready to welcome visitors into the bosom of the family home, my spare room is where I go to escape the family I actually live with (it may be my home, but with kids around, it definitely isn’t my castle). What we need, I reason, is neutral ground. So I begin looking for a place that will put
us all up in style. Never mind home away from home, I want something blow-your-socks-off amazing, and a quick nosey around their website convinces me I have found just that at The Lakes by YOO. Avant-garde design collective, YOO Studio chose 850 acres of Cotswolds woodland, meadows and lakes (a former quarry) as the location for their rural retreat – a five star, private estate of second homes and 11 exclusive holiday rentals, close to Lechlade-on-Thames. While the setting might be the definition of bucolic bliss, with YOO at the helm, and interiors designed by the likes of Kelly Hoppen and Philippe Starck, I’m expecting the designled holiday homes (in five categories ranging from “special”, through “fabulous”, to “one-of-a-kind”) to be anything but rustic. The concierge team at The Lakes propose that the one-of-a-kind five-bedroom Barnhouse – Kate Moss’ interior design debut, no less – will be perfect for our group. Who am I to argue? They then set about making plans for our visit: ordering breakfast hampers and meals, setting up spa appointments for the grown-ups of the group and generally going out of their way to ensure that we have to do nothing beyond packing and getting there. And we almost fail on that front, so unobtrusive are the signs directing us off the quiet country road. But then discretion is key when second homeowners here include Jade Jagger (which also explains the security on the gate). We’re expected though, and welcomed like long lost friends, before being guided through the estate to our home for the weekend. Set away from the lakes, in a secluded copse of silver birch trees, the Barnhouse is no typical Cotswolds cottage. Built from a mixture of local stone and FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

TRAVEL Right: a heated swimming pool takes pride of place in the secluded garden Below: floor-to-ceiling windows celebrate the glorious setting
green oak, the house may have been inspired by traditional agricultural buildings, but floor-to-ceiling windows (all the better to make the most of that glorious setting) opening onto a stunning deck with heated swimming pool, ensure that there is a distinctly modern twist. It is inside that really takes our breath away though. The house is eclectic and oh-so-cool. Playfully retro, the aesthetic takes its style cues from various eras, while perfectly complementing the house’s natural setting. There are plush silver silk carpets reflecting the trees outside, and velvet sofas in earthy, jewel bright tones. A vast custom-built table with deco detailing is already set for our evening meal, with vintage cutlery and glassware. Lining the walls are works of art by Allen Jones, Mit Senoj and Damien Hirst, there are even a few framed photos of Kate Moss herself. And my musical nephew is delighted to discover a Crosley turntable, complete with a curated collection of vinyl, and an acoustic guitar ready to be played. Upstairs, the kids’ bedroom is decked out in bold black and white striped wallpaper, with bright pink curtains and colourful artisan bedcovers from Peru. And in pride of place, with windows overlooking the living space below, the master suite features an epic, mirrored four poster bed, decadently spread with faux furs. No Toto, we are definitely not in Kansas anymore…

And so we set about a weekend of country pursuits: eating and drinking far too much in front of the roaring log burner; strolling by the lakes to work off the calories consumed; open water swimming for the foolhardy of the group; trampolining, fishing, sailing and generally letting off steam for the youngsters; and glorious Bamford bespoke facials and decompression time in the sauna at the heavenly Orchard Spa for the rest. Happily at home in the house that Kate built, we are reluctant to pack up our things at the end of the trip. It is easy to see why so many have been tempted to secure their own piece of lakeside luxury here, and, armed with estate maps, brochures and floorplans, we start dreaming about what might be… To discover more, see thelakesbyyoo.com

2017 T R EN DS The best-dressed trees of 2017 forgo last year’s spirit of quirkiness with an altogether more grown-up and glamorous aesthetic. Where we saw pop art-inspired icons like sequinned ketchup bottles and irreverent emblems of royalty, this year the mood shifts to incorporate themes of opulence and otherworldliness.
Oh Christmas tree! If you enjoy the run-up to Christmas as much the big day itself, dressing the tree is one seasonal ritual that’s sure to ignite the warm and fuzzies. Whether you’re a purist who insists on a traditional fir to give your home that cosy festive scent, or you’ve got designs on a contemporary masterpiece in deconstructed form with faux neon branches, you’ll need to know the decoration trends of 2017. And with expert styling advice from Dan Cooper, seasonal buyer at John Lewis, you too can create a show-stopping designer tree WOR DS A L I H OWA R D

recommend echoing the feel of the outdoors with winter whites, shades of blue and shimmers of silver. Once you’ve decided on your colours, stick to it so the tree doesn’t become too confused.
HOW DO WE CREATE AN OPULENT, LUXURIOUS LOOK?
DECO RATI NG TI PS
If anyone knows how to dress a tree, it’s the “King of Christmas” Dan Cooper. We asked him for the inside scoop on creating the perfect spruce John Lewis Christmas Market, 300 Oxford Street, W1C (020 7629 7711; johnlewis.com)
Before decorating, it’s important to ensure the tree’s branches are ready, so fluffing the tree is key to the decorating process. Play with moving and lifting branches, extending the angles and sprucing the pine needles to optimise the fullness of the tree. Fuller trees with a generous profile and upward sloping branches are happy trees, giving you plenty of space to hang baubles. HOW DO WE CHOOSE A THEME?
If you’re unsure of which decorations to hang, I would recommend picking a colour scheme first. Red and green is the most traditional colour combination but I’d also
IN WHAT ORDER SHOULD WE HANG THE DECORATIONS?
Once you’ve placed your lights, think about depth. Don’t just hang all decorations on the tips of the branches as it will look messy and the baubles will most likely fall off. Hang some baubles further into the foliage – I’d recommend the plain coloured baubles to add shade and tone to the tree – and then place your more precious and statement baubles further out so guests can fully appreciate them.
As well as colour, don’t forget texture. A tree is an inviting feature and it should be tactile. Sequin, glitter and frosted decorations add a luxe look and complement traditional glass baubles. ANY FINISHING TOUCHES?
Yes, make sure the tree looks even. Once all the baubles have been hung, leave the room and revisit in ten minutes, to give you a clear mind. The tree should be balanced and considered, with no gaps. Once you’re happy with it, switch the lights on, sit back and relax!

You’d never guess that this sleek, contemporary interior with its impressive art collection was created to meet the needs of a lively family of six. But Joyce’s stunning period home in St. John’s Wood is living proof that you don’t have to sacrifice aesthetics for practicality WO RDS KARE N H EANEY

Far left: the lightflooded family room opens onto the garden Left: contemporary art adds splashes of vibrant colour to the living room Below: even the swimming pool has its own artworks
Behind the elegant 19th century facade of this doublefronted villa in St. John’s Wood lies an unapologetically 21st century interior. Clean contemporary lines, lightflooded spaces and a neutral palette with pops of vibrant colour from a jaw-dropping art collection create a sense of order and calm. So it comes as something of a surprise when Joyce mentions that this serene environment is actually home to a family of six. “We have four sons, so I wanted a home that was not only contemporary but also adaptable. I didn’t want things to be so precious that my kids couldn’t run around or have their friends over,” she explains. “I definitely wanted a space with a strong sense of design, but at the same time one that was liveable in.” When Joyce and her husband bought the house they only intended to have cosmetic work done. But their plans were derailed when they discovered that the woodwork was rotten. “We had to rip everything out – mouldings and woodwork – and completely rebuild the interior,” she says ruefully. Working with KSR Architects and Susan White of Iggi Interior Design, Joyce completely refurbished the house and added an extension that opened the house up to the garden. For a house in a conservation area, it was an ambitious project; remarkably, the work was finished in just 18 months. How did she manage to complete such a major transformation in such a short time frame? “I’m pretty
decisive,” laughs Joyce. “I’d already put a lot of thought into it, this house was an opportunity to put all my dreams into one place and I was very clear about the direction I wanted to go in.” The house has a strong aesthetic that’s minimalist but not remotely austere. The open-plan kitchen and living areas are a symphony of grey and white, a soothing colour palette that Joyce chose to create a cohesive sense of space. “Everybody laughs when I say this – my house is fifty shades of grey, even downstairs in the kids’ playroom,” she says. Grey ceramic tiles by Mosa used throughout the house and around the basement swimming pool amplify the colour’s unifying effect. Fifty shades of grey also provide the perfect backdrop for Joyce’s great passion: contemporary art. There’s a strong irreverent streak to the collection: the family room features an animal sculpture by Robert Bradford created from recycled toy parts, while the female torso by Cat James in the living room is covered with découpage from vintage magazines. Adding to the sense of fun is an axe with a Louis Vuitton print handle in a case over the guest loo, with the legend “In case of fashion emergency, break glass”. Her favourite piece, says Joyce, is by Charlotte Hodes, Totem Silhouette. “It’s a totem pole made from Venetian glass with beautiful female figures inlayed in gold and silver leaf. When I first saw the piece it made me happy on a bad day, so I knew I had to have it.” Joyce worked very closely with Susan White on all aspects of the interior design. “Susan really understood my vision. We went to a lot of shows together – Salone de Mobile in Milan, MAISON&OBJET in Paris – and we sourced the furniture together. It was very important for me to be part of the process from beginning to end and to have as much of me as possible in the house.” The only area of the house where Joyce took a step back from the decision-making was the children’s bedrooms. “My sons got to choose the look of their own rooms,” she explains. “One is a Chelsea supporter, so his room was designed around his football paraphernalia; another loves Arsenal and is also into graffiti, so I chose a palette that worked with a lot of red and had his name graffitied onto the wall.” The box extension at the back of the house, with its FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

floor to ceiling glass, opened the house up to the garden. With four sports-mad boys, a manicured lawn was out of the question, so Joyce took away as many trees as possible, put down artificial grass, installed a football net and created a basketball court. “It’s an entirely practical solution,” she points out, when every weekend her four boys each invite three or four friends over. “I’ll have 10-15 boys in the house and at least some of them can be playing football, while the others can be playing basketball. Artificial grass means that I don’t have to worry about them tracking mud through the house.” Joyce moved to London from the States 12 years ago, renting just a stone’s throw from where she lives now. So what has kept her loyal to St. John’s Wood? “I just love the idea of being able to live in a house with backyard space and still be somewhere convenient with so many things located nearby. I can get into Mayfair, I can get into Marylebone, but I still have the luxury of living in this house with all these kids.” As co-chair of Holiday House, which launches in London this month and is hosted in two properties in Hamilton Terrace, Joyce is forging even closer links with the neighbourhood she loves. Founded in New York in 2008 by interior designer and breast cancer survivor Iris Dankner, Holiday House showcases the work of top interior designers and lifestyle brands and raises money for breast cancer causes. Joyce needed very little persuasion to come on board. “My friend and co-chair Rachel Laxer had participated twice in New York. She knew that I was passionate about art and interior design, and, that as a breast cancer survivor myself, the cause was very close to home. So of course I said yes.” With 25 leading designers exhibiting in two properties, it promises to be a highlight of the interior design year. It’s been about a year and a half in the making, explains Joyce. That’s roughly the same time that it took to remodel her fabulous house – we can’t wait to see what this formidable organiser and design visionary has helped bring to life in her beloved NW8.
Holiday House launches in London at 59 and 61 Hamilton Terrace, NW8. The showhouses, both of which are for sale, will be open to the public from 9 November to 10 December. HAMPSTEAD
Hampstead’s fan club of millionaires – apparently there are more living here than in any other UK area – speaks volumes for its appeal. The high street might look more countryside than Capital, but with its mix of fine dining establishments, delightful delis, chic boutiques and high-end independent stores, it is the last word in sophistication. A haven for lovers of period architecture, the village streets serve as a reminder of the area’s history as a hilltop spa. An attractive mix of rare Queen Anne and Regency properties, as well as Georgian, Edwardian, Victorian and modern developments are on offer. From detached houses on leafy avenues to charming cottages on winding lanes, there’s something for every taste – if not budget! And with the Heath on the doorstep – 790 acres of woodland, meadows, swimming ponds and playing fields, plus some truly spectacular views of the Capital from Parliament Hill – there’s green space to make the rest of London positively green with envy PHOTO G R A P H Y KAT H Y ANNE LIM

Located right next door to Keats House on the historic Keats Grove, this library is now run by volunteers. To generate much-needed funds to keep it going, the Keats Community Library Group arranges community events throughout the year. Jeremy Karpel of TK International is a patron and passionate advocate of the library’s work. He says: “With technology increasingly taking over children’s lives, community libraries that nurture the joy of reading a real book are needed more than ever.”10 Keats Grove, NW3 (020 7431 1266; keatscommunitylibrary.org.uk)

FEELING FESTIVE
LITTLE BLACK BOOK Abida Halstenberg, founder of SAMAYA Ayurveda, tells us why she’s happiest in Hampstead. “My children studied in Hampstead for many
years, which is why we made the ‘big move’ from Marylebone four years ago. On my rare days off, the Heath is my favourite escape: we live a block off the Finchley Road, so I enjoy meandering along the peacefully winding back roads as I make my way to its wild expanse (where I get lost every single time). On the way back, I find it impossible to resist the invitingly cosy café upstairs at Waterstones, where I can retreat with a pot of tea and a good read. Afterwards, the antique market stalls beckon as I make my way home, and I often pop in to inspect the curiosities. I once found a stunning set of mother-of-pearl cufflinks there, which proved irresistible. When I’m with my children, there is no option but to join the queue snaking down the high street for one of the best crêpes in London, from La Crêperie de Hampstead. The spelt bread at Le Pain Quotidien is also a staple in my home and I always indulge in a cappuccino whenever I pop in. I have to admit to liking a good gelato, too, so I find it hard to stay away from Venchi, which is a more recent local addition. The Wells is another favourite, as is the garden at the Freemasons Arms. We love attending post-brunch Sunday concerts at the historic Burgh House, especially when the talented Masami Suzuki performs. French & Corry offer the best facials and massages in Hampstead so they are my go-to when I need some pampering. They stock SAMAYA, so I can enjoy a bespoke Ayurvedic dosha-balancing facial performed with my own skincare range, which is fantastic! I also enjoy strolling down to Belsize Park’s Revital store, where I pick up my natural and organic supplies while checking up on their SAMAYA stock. At night, the Everyman cinema is a lovely place to relax in front of a movie while enjoying a glass of wine and some nibbles.” samayaayurveda.com
With the lights twinkling on the high street, few places feel more Christmassy than Hampstead at this time of year. We’ll be getting our festive fill early, at the Marie Curie Winter Market on 24 November. The family event will raise funds for the hospice in Lyndhurst Gardens. As well as stalls selling luxury gifts including jewellery, ceramics, homewares and Christmas decorations, there will be delicious festive fare in the form of mulled wine and baked goods, plus a mini fairground in the car park of the hospice. Organisers will be donating all proceeds to help with the running costs of the hospice on Christmas Day. The Everyman Cinema in Belsize Park will be getting involved, too, with two charity screenings of children’s Christmas films planned for the day, one at 10am and another at 11am. Ticket prices are £5 for adults and £2.50 for children. 11am-4pm, Marie Curie Hospice, 11 Lyndhurst Gardens, NW3
OUR AGENTS SAY....
PARKHEATH “I would say Downshire Hill and Well Walk are my joint favourite streets. Both are charming, quaint roads, situated moments from Hampstead Heath, with both housing famous old pubs!” David Stern
CHESTERTONS “While the market is more challenging than it has been in previous years, Hampstead is still an area in high demand, with a wide range of both domestic and international buyers purchasing in the area. The majority of Hampstead homes fall in the price range of £500,000 to £5 million.” Sam Gould
SAVILLS “Property here varies from Georgian to contemporary and even notable listed Queen Anne mansions. My favourite area is the village, where all the properties have real character and intrigue.” Peter Brookes

Schools THE HEAD
VICKY BINGHAM SOUTH HAMPSTEAD HIGH SCHOOL
How long have you been head? Since January this year. I was previously academic deputy at Guildford High School. What attracted you to the school? It’s an academic powerhouse, but with kindness and curiosity at its core – and the most phenomenal co-curricular activities. There are 143 clubs a week on offer this term alone, from yoga to Young Enterprise, football to fashion school, life drawing to ukulele orchestra, maths to Model UN. Many societies are initiated and run by the girls.
How would you sum it up? We focus on what really matters – our pupils are our Northern Star. What makes it different? There are no factory settings here. We encourage girls to be themselves, to develop and express their own opinions. We attract highprofile speakers to help shine a light on a diverse range of topics. Our music scholars play lunchtime concerts each Friday. We even have a poet-inresidence this term. How would you describe the atmosphere? Busy,
buzzy, friendly and unpretentious, with a steely ambition underneath. We aim to foster intellectual spark, creativity, debate and a real joy in learning. What’s your personal educational ethos? Opening doors, hearts and minds. More than ever, we need to help develop creativity, humanity and a commitment to life-long learning. Our pupils should leave us as confident, adaptable and pioneering young women, ready to make their mark on the world and to lead happy and successful lives. How do you balance your co-curricular activities with making sure pupils realise their academic potential? With lots of one-to-one
support from tutors. It’s about balance and perspective. How do you look after the wellbeing of your pupils? We have a life coach, a counsellor, a full-time nurse and at least two, if not three, tutors per form. We have a peer-mentoring system, great talks for parents on welfare issues and the best school food I’ve ever eaten. I’m also a passionate advocate of sport as a critical tool for mental wellbeing. South Hampstead High School, 3 Maresfield Gardens, NW3 (020 7435 2899; shhs.gdst.net)
THE SHORTLIST Today’s young people also need to negotiate social media, which encourages comparisons with others and triggers timeless teenage angst around being ‘good enough’. Add a culture of testing that encourages both parents and children to fixate on granular differences in results and you’ve got a potentially toxic combination.
Words: Claire Atherton
How hard should you push your child? Every parent wants their child to be the best they can be. But with rates of teenage depression and anxiety up by 70 per cent compared with 25 years ago, something’s clearly going wrong. “Many parents have big aspirations for their children,” says Eve JardineYoung, principal of Cheltenham Ladies’ College, which puts wellbeing on an equal footing with academic achievement. “The trouble is that they don’t always articulate what all the extra tutoring and ballet lessons are for. Often, because children love and want to please their parents, they can put themselves under pressure to live up to what they believe their parents’ aspirations to be.”
So how can you tell when the balance is about to tip? “Judging when you’re close to this invisible threshold is a very imperfect science,” says Eve. “It’ll also be different at different ages, and with different strengths and personalities. All you can do is to approach your child with an open mind and a belief that anything is possible – while also showing that your love and acceptance is unconditional. Try asking yourself things like: What did I hear today when I really listened to my child? How much of my response comes through the filter of my own experiences? How would I feel if I was being parented the way I’m parenting? Remind yourself, too, that the person your child becomes as they strive to reach their grades is as important as the grades themselves. It’s through this process that they’ll learn vital life skills such as how to think creatively, be flexible, influence others and respond to problems.” Eve Jardine-Young will be discussing this topic at the Independent Schools Show, Battersea Park, 11-12 November. For many a Londoner, the appeal of St Albans is obvious: the small but buzzing cathedral city, steeped in history and situated in leafy Hertfordshire, offers an altogether more tranquil lifestyle away from the hustle and bustle of the Capital, yet its enviable transport links make it the perfect reverse commuter spot – especially for those of us with NW postcodes. Here, you’ll find St Albans High School for Girls, an esteemed establishment that’s consistently making the lists of the UK’s top schools, and one that’s well worth travelling for. Even the headmistress, Jenny Brown, hails from Highgate. “I really value my fifteen-minute train journey each day – it’s a great time to plan and reflect for the day ahead,” she explains, adding, “It must be one of the most relaxed London 86 |

commutes.” And the school’s location isn’t just convenient when it comes to the practicalities: while it beats with the same energy and ambition as a London school, it boasts a much more grounded, unstuffy feeling. The independent day school is affiliated with the Church of England, and provides an all-round
values-based education through inspirational teaching and firstclass facilities. From when girls start at the school aged four, right through to the sixth form, the focus is to provide an exciting and challenging education that fosters independence, creativity and risk-taking. Pupils are encouraged to set themselves ambitious goals, both intellectually and personally. Critical and creative thinking are promoted, and a strong emphasis is placed on independent research and investigation. Important though they are, outstanding results are welcome by-products of the real business of education: inspiring a love of learning. And with that in mind, a caring community and strong pastoral care are at the heart of the school. The individual talents of every pupil are nurtured:
staff listen to students, talk candidly with parents and help to encourage every girl to be confident in who she is. It goes without saying that strong emphasis is placed upon extra-curricular activities, too. Through a broad range of activities encompassing sport, music, drama, expeditions, international exchanges and service to others, girls are encouraged to push their boundaries and develop strength of character, leadership skills, empathy and, perhaps most importantly, a love of adventure. In Jenny’s words, “the High School is a vibrant and supportive community where girls thrive. Pupils step out of the door confident and well prepared for the next phase of their lives.” For more information, visit stahs.org.uk

Property A P I R AT E ’ S TA L E Favourite London street? Burlington Arcade off Bond Street. Not strictly speaking a street, but an elegant throwback and what all shopping centres should aspire to be.
W11 Opera has been encouraging young people to sing their hearts out since 1971 and Knight Frank Notting Hill is a long-time supporter of their inspirational work. Every year, the community-based company stages professional-standard productions with parts for more than 70 local children of all abilities; they also run workshops in state schools for youngsters who might not otherwise experience the magic of opera. Former W11 Opera cast members include Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Eve Best – both are now keen patrons. This season sees the premier of The Cutlass Crew, a swashbuckling tale based on the adventures of Lady Mary Killigrew, a 16th century gentlewoman turned pirate.
Favourite sale? The most satisfying sales are those you bring back from the brink. There’s little more rewarding than helping people buy and sell family homes. Favourite London restaurant? Hawksmoor. I’ve had nothing but great experiences in all of their restaurants. The food, wine and service are all spot on. Favourite place for coffee? I don’t drink coffee, but if I did, I hear that the Ginger & White is hard to beat.

Years in the business? More than 15, all of them working around Highgate.

I love London because… I’m not sure any other city has quite so much to offer to quite so many people. There are few places where I’d rather be.
Period property or new build? Having lived in both, I’d have to say new build; but show me the right Georgian town house…

First London home? I grew up in London and lived for a time in Dartmouth Park, but the first home I purchased was a one-bedroom garden flat in Whetstone, twenty years ago. If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… something to do with protecting the environment. Or maybe a Ninja.

Take one person, dead, alive or fictional, out in London – who and where? I reckon BoJo knows his way around and could show me a thing or two. Aliens attack. Which London landmark would you save? The Natural History Museum. Surely one of the Capital’s most beautiful buildings. And there are plenty of places to hide in there, too!
CHESTERTONS COAT DROP
Rather than relegate last year’s winter coat to the back of the wardrobe, drop it off at a Chestertons office. Throughout November, the agency is supporting Calling London’s ‘Winter Coat Campaign’, which collects unwanted coats to help needy Londoners keep warm each winter. Last year, Chestertons received a staggering 1,000 donations – help them beat that total this year. (chestertons.com)

GALLIARD HOMES “We have found the market to be quite buoyant of late, despite negativity. We are down to one unit left in The Chiltern’s (a twobed duplex) and have seen strong sales at Hanway Gardens, where Galliard is instructed as sales agents. Owner-occupiers remain prevalent, looking to buy properties in finished developments, ready for occupation.” David Galman
“Lighting is key to selling a property, but it’s often overlooked. Good lighting, golden hues and shadows make a space look warm and welcoming on a dark day. Work out how best to light a room before a viewing; make use of table and feature lights, as well as dimmers and recessed lighting. Dead light bulbs are an absolute no-no. If someone feels cosy walking into your home from the cold, you’re already part way there.”
