In an age when front row seats and unimpeded access to every ilk of fashion house are both at the touch of a trackpad, it seems impossible to conceive of a time that fashion and the World Wide Web weren’t intrinsically linked, stranger still that the internet barely featured as recently as 1997 – the year McQueen debuted at Givenchy, Galliano at Dior, and the year Christine Suppes began fashionlines.com. Pioneering a nowubiquitous media with a cash value circa Sagan’s number, e-mag Fashion Lines started as
Suppes grew a collection of couture. A passionate patron, she never bought before fully versed in a piece, and was soon compelled to share. Beyond an e-mag, instrumental in how we engage with fashion, this led to an exquisite, educated collection. Now, for the first time, we’re granted access to it, via a stunning new book, Electric Fashion, shot by Fabric favourite Frederic Aranda. More than a beautiful catalogue of couture (though, with this calibre of sartorial porn, that would do), Electric Fashion is a storybook. It tells

As much a part of the area as the Heath itself, Hampstead has always been home for author and journalist Joseph
How long have you lived in Hampstead? I was born in Hampstead, and have never lived anywhere else. Not in the same house, of course… but really, there seems no good reason for moving away. My roots are here – and it’s rather lovely. It frankly has never occurred to me to buy anywhere else. The only trouble is that these days the peace is regularly disrupted for inordinately prolonged periods by rapacious neighbours – excavating, demolishing and generally being a damned nuisance. What do you like most about it? The Heath is beyond words; you would have to travel as far as Wales to find an expanse of similar rugged moorland; the serendipitous juxtaposition of architecture in the Village; and just the sense of history amid a bustling and aware community. Describe the area in five words Leafy. Expensive. Welcoming. Stylish. Home. What are your favourite local cafés and restaurants? As I write a weekly restaurant review for the Ham & High I am always

looking for new local places. The best at the moment is The Wells. Villa Bianca continues to hold its own – though it’s rather lively in the evening. Where do you go for an afterwork drink? Because I work at home, the evening tipple of wine would be taken there. The Holly Bush is lovely – otherwise I would tend more to be in the Garrick Club or, further afield, the Chelsea Arts Club. Where do you like to shop locally? Because of ever-rising rents and rates, it is harder to find humble and useful shops. Zana in Flask Walk is unique, however: perfect for unusual jackets, scarves and jewellery for women. Waitrose, of course… Describe your perfect day in Hampstead A writer lives an upside-down life: when you are at home, you are working – when you are out, you are not. So the perfect Hampstead day would be in my study, with the work going well.
What did you look for in a property? Smallish, surrounded by trees, and invisible from the road. I have this theory that all of Hampstead’s most interesting houses are unknown, because they can’t actually be seen. Have you done much work on your home? Not in the sense of excavation and demolition (see above), which I actively deplore: people should buy a house they actually want to live in. So it’s more a process of upkeep and occasional titivation. Describe your interiors style Eclectic, colourful, and always with too much stuff. The house is virtually held up by books, the gaps filled in with pictures. If you hadn’t chosen here, where else might you have looked? The only other part of London I have ever thought I could live in is Chelsea. Outside of London… Edinburgh, maybe Bath. Finally, what’s new for you?
