Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition 26 April-15 September | Design Museum

Coinciding with the BFI’s major focus on the great filmmaker, this is a deep dive into Kubrick’s disquieting universe. From early masterworks 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and A Clockwork Orange (1971) to later classics, Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999), the exhibition teases a unique insight into the director's vast archive, promising original props and costumes, set models and rare photographs. Why the Design Museum? Because Kubrick’s fascination with architecture and design is evidenced in every frame of his films. Indeed, David Nightingale Hicks, whose iconic hexagonal carpet features in The Shining (1980), is just one designer who Kubrick worked closely with to achieve his distinctive visual style.

Curated by Mirta d’Argenzio, Short Stories presents Vitali’s captivating colour images of humans at leisure. The large-scale photographs, often sweeping panoramas, feature crowded plazas, sweaty discotheques, busy beaches and sunny parks swarming with picnickers. In combining landscape photography with the figurative, Vitali gives us a unique perspective on people at play. And in a new book of the same name, published this month by Steidl Verlag, each singular image depicts a significant moment for Vitali – the artist’s ‘short stories’ of a long and distinguished career.

13 April | Roundhouse MOBO-winning Laura Mvula headlines this one-day celebration of music, the seventh instalment since its successful launch in 2013, and the sister event to East Sussex’s Love Supreme Jazz Festival – for those of us who’d rather stay put in the Capital. Mvula is joined by fusion keyboardist Kamaal Williams, jazz-punk six-piece Melt Yourself Down, and young soul protégé Judi Jackson.

Edvard Munch: Love and Angst

11 April-21 July | British Museum The most comprehensive collection of Munch’s prints we’ve seen in the UK for 45 years, this exhibition focuses on the Norwegian artist’s most remarkable and experimental work.

hen ITV’s sumptuous reimagining of Queen Victoria’s early years first aired in 2016 it quickly filled a Downton-shaped hole in television schedules. The series, written by Daisy Goodwin and starring Jenna Coleman as Queen Victoria, quickly became a Sunday evening staple. This month sees it return for a third series.

While Queen Victoria and Prince Albert might be the main protagonists of the show, theirs isn’t the only love story to have captured viewers’ hearts.

Below stairs, we’ve been caught up in the romance between Mr Francatelli, the Queen’s cook, and Miss Skerrett, her head dresser (who has something of a shady past).

The role of Skerrett was an irresistible one for Nell Hudson from the outset. “It was a horrible feeling waiting to hear if I’d got the part,” she recalls. “Normally you hear very quickly. So, I thought, maybe I will hear before the end of the day – and I heard nothing. The next day was Friday and I was checking my phone a million times a minute, but I heard nothing… On Monday I thought, OK, last hope – all day I waited and then at 7pm I finally got the call from my agent telling me that I had got the part.

I think I called him a bastard for keeping me hanging so long,” she laughs.

For all of the anguish that waiting brings, that phone call with news of a casting is one of the things Nell loves most about her job. “It is this golden drug almost,” she grins. “It is the highest you can feel, ever. It is just incredible. And you sort of enjoy that for five minutes, and then the cliché is that all your neuroses fire up again and you start to think, oh God, help!

Can I even play this character?”

Having lived in Skerrett’s shoes for so long, Nell had none of those concerns returning for a third season. With each series taking around six months to film, the show has become a huge part of her life. “I think that the lovely thing about returning to a TV series year after year is that you really all just sort of settle in and bother to invest and connect to making friendships, because you know that you are going to be there for a long time,” she explains. “I have made real proper friends for life.” Having good relationships certainly makes for a very easy working environment; Nell goes on to assure me. “Not to mention a productive environment, creatively, because you feel at your safest in that sort of situation.”

So what can she tell us about this latest series? “It is mostly lots of secrets…” she shrugs apologetically. “I can tell you we pick up very shortly after we left off. So, things are very much the same with Skerrett and Francatelli. They are engaged, and when we meet them again they are having a very typically ‘them’ push and pull about him wanting to move forwards with their future and their lives together, and her feeling attached to the Queen and more reticent about that.”

Though this has been her favourite job to date, Nell, who is also know for playing Laoghaire MacKenzie in Outlander (the STARZ drama series based on Diana Gabaldon's historical time travel book series of the same name), tells me she is looking forward to playing a more modern role. “I have

done so much period drama in the five years since I left drama school,” she explains. “I do have something coming up that is set in the present day.

And I am really looking forward to that. You can focus on just inhabiting another character, rather than trying to find the truth of someone who lived in that time – you can really focus on sinking your teeth into who they are as a person, without having to contextualise them as well.”

The role in question is in an independent feature film that Nell is producing herself. “It is a sort of Yorgos Lanthimos style film – very absurdist,” she reveals. “We are telling people it is like Get Out, but about the patriarchy rather than about racism, if that makes sense. It is a dark comedy/horror, and we have got some very cool people attached, who we are very excited about. And I will be taking on the lead in that as well.”

Producing is something that she would definitely like to do more of.

“It is fun being able to have a say in how the story is going to be told, basically – there is my controlling personality!” she laughs. When it comes to how stories are told, she has also, she tells me, dabbled in writing for the screen. Indeed, writing is perhaps the one thing she could have seen herself doing if the acting had not panned out.

Right now her writing energies are being channelled in a different direction, though. “I am writing a novel at the moment and it is bringing me a lot of happiness, so hopefully that is something that I will always be able to do alongside acting,” she explains.

Nell describes the book as: “sort of like The Secret History, but set in present day London,” and she has hopes that it will one day be published.

“I showed a literary agent the first half and she really liked it and told me to finish it. So I am just sort of trying to make myself get around to it. There is something scary about finishing it, because that means that I will have to actually see if it is any good or not,” she laughs.

Along with finishing the book, Nell would like to do a bit of stage work here in London. “I have only done one play since I left drama school, so I am really out of practice. But acting on stage is what I fell in love with when I decided I wanted to be an actor, so it is definitely something that I would like to do again,” she tells me. “I think there are some really cool playwrights out there who I would really like to work with: Alice Birch, Mike Bartlett, Penelope Skinner… I think new writing is really edgy and that really excites me. I think this generation of writers are not just telling stories for the sake of telling stories. There is always an agenda to their writing, and I think that is really cool.”

It’s not just the London stage that excites Nell, though: “I am madly in love with this city,” she gushes. “I love that there is always something happening: even if it is 10pm on a Tuesday, there will be something going on if you want it. And it is absolutely, definitely the best place to be for work,” she grins.

Speaking of work, she really ought to get back to that writing… but perhaps she’ll just curl up and do a spot of reading… “I think spending an entire day reading on my bed with my dog, Maggie, is my current guilty pleasure,” she laughs. “My boyfriend will get home from work and say, ‘What did you do today?’ And I will say, ‘I just read: I did nothing all day long!’ I love reading, it keeps me sane. And also I love it for the escapism, like how playing a character for me is quite escapist. I love inhabiting another world for a bit.” Not that there is anything wrong with the real world, of course. “I am extremely happy. I think that I have been very lucky and I am excited about the future,” she concludes, with a big smile.

The Tiger Who Came to Tea at The Savoy

I

t is only when I see my five-yearold companion’s wide-eyed excitement upon entering the foyer of The Savoy that I realise I have clearly been suffering from five-star fatigue. He has his camera with him and breathlessly asks the concierge if it is OK for him to take pictures, the answer is, of course, “Why certainly, Sir”. Seeing things through his eyes is a joy.

We’ve booked afternoon tea as a school holiday treat. But this is no ordinary tea. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Judith Kerr’s bestselling book, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, The Savoy have teamed up with HarperCollins Children’s Books to produce a very

special tea for their youngest guests.

And the chefs have really gone to town laying on the perfect spread – it is a good job that, like the tiger, we are very hungry.

Never mind fancy teas, we opt for hot chocolate: creamy and delicious, it comes in a gorgeous illustrated china teapot and is served in dainty cups, made especially for the hotel by Heraldic Pottery. We sip it while tucking into sandwiches – dainty fingers of peanut butter and jelly, and honey roast ham, and pretty whirls of cheese. All simple but extraordinarily tasty. I ask for seconds but my little friend is ready for cakes. They arrive, to squeals

of elation, along with a pair of tiger ears for him to wear (and take away with him afterwards). There are tiger striped scones (served with not just cream and jam, but chocolate spread, too), pink and blue Battenberg (designed to look like Sophie’s distinctive tights), a milk bottle-shaped Kilner jar of yoghurt with a zingy raspberry compote, chocolate dipped cookies and – our favourite – a cup, filled

e’ve so long been schooled that carbs are bad for us, that a comforting bowl of pasta has come to feel like it is off limits. But we come bearing good news: thanks to a brand-new book from Julia Azzarello, you don’t need to be running the marathon this month to tuck in. METHOD Bring a saucepan of water to the boil, add salt and cook the pasta for 5–7 minutes, or until al dente. Drain, reserving some of the cooking water.

Warm a large, deep frying pan, add 1 tablespoon of the oil, the spring onions and carrot and sauté for 2–3 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the broccoli and asparagus and cook for

2 minutes. Add the butter and the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil, along with the pasta, peas, broad beans and cream. Loosen with a little of the pasta water if needed and cook for 2 minutes, then season to taste.

Serve in bowls, sprinkled with the herbs, grated or shaved cheese and edible flowers.

The George & Dragon reopened late last month after a programme of refurbishment, and features 10 luxurious guest bedrooms, an a la carte restaurant and cosy adjoining bar area, all housed in a former coaching inn dating back to the 1700s. The new menus, inspired

by Arnaud’s French and British heritage, include mouth-watering delights such as whole slow-roasted guinea fowl; south Devon mussels with homemade sourdough bread; crispy whitebait with cumin salt and spiced Marie Rose sauce; and Chapel & Swan

smoked salmon, with capers, chopped Tracy Swallan eggs and the team’s signature Marmite bread. Provenance is key for Arnaud, who has made it his mission to source the very best local produce – much of it from local supplier EJ Churchill (who supply Tom Kerridge’s The Hand and Flowers). Arnaud says: “My team and I are incredibly excited to start the next chapter at the George & Dragon. Take to the streets of the city centre to get a real feel for Roman life. Start your route from Piazza del Campidoglio, where you can visit the Capitoline Museums, see the Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara Coeli, and admire the view of the Roman Forum from the Tarpeian Rock. Then descend the staircase towards Piazza Venezia and walk along Via del Corso, one of the most famous shopping districts in Rome, to the Galleria Alberto Sordi. Hidden between the narrow alleyways behind the gallery you will find the unmissable Trevi Fountain.

Return to Via del Corso and turn onto Via di Pietra, which will take you to Piazza di Pietra, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona.

If you are in Rome on the morning of Easter Sunday, a visit to San Pietro is a must: take a walk through Borgo Pio, the medieval quarter, to get there. You can participate in the mass held in the basilica, which commences at 10am. Entrance is only guaranteed with a free ticket issued by the Pontifical Prefecture. After mass, get lost in the maze of streets in Borgo Pio. ore self-assured and less frenetic than neighbouring Dubai, Abu Dhabi has taken a leisurely and measured approach to tourism.

But I’m promised that it is not all about the sunbathing – from the bright-white beaches of the Arabian Gulf to the galleries of the Louvre, it seems there is plenty to keep one occupied in the glittering Emirate metropolis of Abu Dhabi.

I’m staying just outside the city in one of the newest luxury hotels; situated on the pristine white sands of Saadiyat Island, five-star Rixos opened last October and is already making a name for itself as the place to go.

Selling itself on an “all-inclusive, all-exclusive” approach, I’m assured that this luxury resort will take my holiday to the next level.

Inspired by the palaces of the Ottoman Empire, the tone for my stay is set the moment I walk into the chic lobby.

It is furnished in inviting turquoise and gold tones, and features tall decorative ceilings, water features and white marble floors. My stylish suite is not dissimilar in style, though a beautiful mosaic wall, a palette of gemstone green and dazzling royal blue, a sublime spa-like bathroom and luxurious white linen bed sheets ensure that it does not feel sterile. The room opens out onto a small terrace that overlooks the expertly kept, luscious green gardens and the turquoise sea on the horizon. There is a total of 366 rooms here, plus 12 three- and four-bedroom villas, all with either shared or private pools, direct beach access and a butler service – Rixos Saadiyat Island Resort is certainly vast, but it feels quiet and discreet.

TRAVEL

Out on the beachfront I discover Lounge Bar, which seems a good spot for sunset drinks to celebrate the start of my holiday. Later, I dine at Orient. Set on the fifth floor and boasting extraordinary sea views, this fine dining oriental Turkish restaurant is decked out in red, gold and blue, and looks lavish and inviting. The atmosphere is intimate and relaxed, the background music soothing, the service friendly and the food fabulous – I am not disappointed.

Breakfast the next morning – an expansive open buffet – is served at all-day dining restaurant, Turquoise. I’m keen to spend my first day familiarising myself with the resort, and it doesn’t take long to discover that Rixos’ “all-inclusive, all-exclusive” claims do not just refer to the food: the island also boasts a water park complete with wave pool for all ages, a children’s aqua park and Rixy Kids Club to keep the little ones happy. For the adults there’s the Anjana, a spa inspired by the age-old wellness customs of Turkey.

Nestled within the resort, it’s the place to go if you want to unwind in the sauna, relax in the steam room, or take a peaceful dip in the private outdoor pool.

I am up and out in the pre-dawn darkness the next morning, ready for a desert safari excursion. A short 40-minute drive sees me in the heart of the desert at the Arabian Nights Village. It is a low adobe style retreat surrounded by ancient stone walls, that is seemingly miles from civilisation. After a very light buffet breakfast (and you definitely need to go light), I’m greeted by my desert expert.

As I climb into the 4x4 I have no idea what lies ahead. It’s a bumpy ride and within minutes we are bouncing off and over the sand dunes. We fly up one dune and down another, cutting shapes in the sand. I hold on to the roll bar above my head for dear life, convinced we are going to barrel it down and be lost forever in the shifting sand dunes of Abu Dhabi.

I needn’t worry though, this guy really is an expert, and after about 20 minutes we stop on one of the highest dunes, where we jump out and marvel at the 360-degree views of the deserted landscape. Nothing short of an adventure: the journey has been exhilarating, death-defying and magical all at the same time.

Later in my stay, I arrange a visit the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

Ten years in the making, the complex, especially the geometric dome, is a work of art in itself. I marvel at French

architect Jean Nouvel’s unique use of light, and happily spend time simply wandering around under the dome.

The art on display is equally impressive: the permanent collections and temporary exhibits include loans from 13 French museums, including the original Louvre in Paris, housed in the 12 galleries spread throughout 55 buildings.

It is seriously impressive stuff.

I find more cultural fulfilment at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. One of the world’s largest mosques, it is named after the late president, who wanted to build a place that showcased the cultural diversity of Islam side-by-side with modern architecture and art. Known for its white colour – symbolising purity and piety – this place is brilliantly beautiful and best enjoyed in silence as the sun sets.

I have been blown away by Abu Dhabi. With balmy temperatures year-round, a seven-hour flight and a very manageable three-hour time difference, whether for a long weekend or a whole week away, the UAE certainly seems to have it all. And you can guarantee that a warm welcome awaits – as the locals say bayte baytak (my house is your house).

hree years after launching her blog, The Pink House, and as one of Instagram’s best-loved influencers, Emily Murray has turned @pinkhouseliving into an aspirational interiors book that, by her own admission, doesn’t take itself too seriously. Her aim? To inspire readers to create a home that makes them truly happy. Here, she shows us around her own London home, which she shares with her husband and two young boys What do you usually look for in a property?

I’m a sucker for a period property. I always lived in characterful homes as a kid, and the two London flats and Edinburgh terrace I owned before buying this house were both Victorian. I guess I look for a sense of history; a personality. I like my home to connect me to the lives that have gone before. Other than that, our main requirement in this house was that it had access to a great outdoor space for the boys. We certainly found that!

Tell me about the property It’s a five-bed Edwardian house built on top of a hill. It backs onto a beautiful private park, which plays hosts to parties, camping weekends, tennis tournaments and barbecues.

The park is accessible only from the houses on its perimeter and it’s the main reason we bought the property. That, and the amazing views of the city on the other side.

How have you personalised the space?

By adding lots of colour (including plenty of pink!), texture, pattern, some off-beat, unexpected touches, and a whole load of books, some of which are colour-coded. I also wanted to bring nature into the house as a reminder of the beautiful space outside. It’s like an oasis of countryside in the big city.

Have you done any structural work?

No, although we did replace the existing kitchen worktop with a gorgeous slab of Carrara marble; reinstate Edwardian-style cornicing; uncover and polish original floorboards; and have had various fitted cupboards, shelves

and wardrobes installed throughout the house.

The structural work starts this summer, when we plan to add a shower room extension and open up the middle of the house to create a much bigger hallway, with more storage for the huge piles of football kit our kids now own.

How does your online presence inform your interiors choices?

I’m always catching sight of a gorgeous room on Instagram and thinking, ooh, that’s a clever idea

– I’ve started saving my favourites. But I try not to take too much from Insta as it can become a bit of an echo chamber where the same ideas keep circulating. I get fresh inspiration from hotels, bars and restaurants, as well as travel and fashion. I also love discovering new brands as a way of keeping things interesting.

For all I like to discover new brands, there are a number I keep coming back to because they

always get it right. These include Bert & May (dreamy encaustic tiles and beautiful bathroom fittings), Buster + Punch (the coolest brass handles and light switches), House of Hackney (kings of maximalism), Cole & Son (they have an amazing wallpaper for every occasion), Graham & Green (their catalogue sucks me in every time), Muck N Brass (luxecyclers who live down the road) and Alternative Flooring (stunning patterned carpets). My new favourite is River Island Home for fun affordable bits that make a statement.

What was your best thrifty find for the house?

The vintage corner drinks cabinet I picked up for a steal in Edinburgh and which Muck N Brass luxecycled for me. In the photoshoot for Pink House Living it’s painted green and gold, but I recently got them to paint pink over the green and now I love it even more. It looks lush against my Farrow & Ball Hague Blue sitting room walls.

And the most extravagant?

The most extravagant items in the house are the two House of Hackney ceramic cheetah lampstands with fringed lampshades, which we use as bedside lamps. They were a 40th birthday present from the husband (he took the subtle hint) and they take the room to the next level.

The kitchen. It’s got everything going for it: a pink and green colour scheme (my favourite combination); loads of plants and planty prints; beautiful ceramic tiles and marble worktops; my incredible De’Longhi coffee machine, which I can operate remotely with my phone; a view out over our south-facing back garden and the park beyond. It’s pretty much my favourite place in the whole world, especially if there’s an open bottle of pink Champagne kicking about...

Area guide Marylebone Old timers rub shoulders with trendy new boutiques, and traditional caffs mingle among Michelin-starred establishments: the winning village-vibe here might feel like a happy accident, but the cleverly balanced businesses have been carefully curated. Marylebone’s Psycle offers local gluttons for punishment a collection of class-based workouts designed to help clear the mind and tone the body. Aston Chase’s Mark Pollack is a regular here: “I love cycling so this is a quick fix if I haven’t got time to hit the roads,” he says.

I

f you’re prone to neck problems, you might want to avoid graphs depicting the rise of London school fees. According to the Independent Schools Council, they rose by 24 per cent between 2012 and 2017, taking the average annual day fee to £16,572.

This has put private education out of the reach of families who could previously have afforded it.

It also explains why St Paul’s School has introduced a bursary scheme to offer “more generous support to families with incomes less than £120k.”

In fact, a growing investment in bursaries is one of the reasons for the steep rise; state-of-the-art recording studios and 50-metre swimming pools is another. But with schools racing to out-do each other on the facilities front, how do you know which one offers the best value?

“As independent schools tend not to run SATs, it’s going to come down to what matters to you,” says The Good Schools Guide’s Francis Hamlyn. “For parents who don’t get home until 7pm, an extra hour of education can add value, as can the range

of after-school activities on offer. Children can now try their hand at everything from drama and creative writing, to stamp collecting and sport.

“Many parents also value smaller class sizes because they usually bring better results. With many state school classes having 30 or more pupils, it’s not uncommon to find children in the private sector taught in groups of 15 or fewer.”

Your child’s strengths and interests are another important factor, says Francis. “If they’re great at sports, central London schools may not be the best choice, as they don’t usually have facilities close by,” he advises. “In that case, you could consider boarding schools outside the Capital, which have more space for playing fields and sports pitches.

“Finally, an academic child won’t necessarily thrive in the hothouse environment of the Capital’s best (and most expensive) day schools. Many nonselective schools still get great results because they have small class sizes and plenty of teacher contact.

How did Another Country come about?
