What to see and do this month

EXHIBITION & FILM

Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition 26 April-15 September | Design Museum

Coinciding with the BFI’s major focus on the great filmmaker, this is a deep dive into Kubrick’s disquieting universe. From early masterworks 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and A Clockwork Orange (1971) to later classics, Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999), the exhibition teases a unique insight into the director's vast archive, promising original props and costumes, set models and rare photographs. Why the Design Museum? Because Kubrick’s fascination with architecture and design is evidenced in every frame of his films. Indeed, David Nightingale Hicks, whose iconic hexagonal carpet features in The Shining (1980), is just one designer who Kubrick worked closely with to achieve his distinctive visual style.

La Linea

25 April-5 May | various venues London’s irresistible 10-day Latin music festival returns with an explosion of Argentinian psychedelic rhythms, samba-infused jazz, Cuban nu-electronica and more. It’s all highly infectious and takes place across concert halls, clubs and the Capital’s best-loved art hubs. Highlights include a historical resurrection of Las Maravillas de Mali. The Afro-Cuban group are back together for a retrospective 50th anniversary. EXHIBITION

Massimo Vitali: Short Stories

12 April-24 May | Mazzoleni This month, the Mayfair gallery opens its first solo fine art photography show. Curated by Mirta d’Argenzio, Short Stories presents Vitali’s captivating colour images of humans at leisure. The large-scale photographs, often sweeping panoramas, feature crowded plazas, sweaty discotheques, busy beaches and sunny parks swarming with picnickers. In combining landscape photography with the figurative, Vitali gives us a unique perspective on people at play. And in a new book of the same name, published this month by Steidl Verlag, each singular image depicts a significant moment for Vitali – the artist’s ‘short stories’ of a long and distinguished career. 27 Albemarle Street, W1S (020 7495 8805; mazzoleniart.com)

hen ITV’s sumptuous reimagining of Queen Victoria’s early years first aired in 2016 it quickly filled a Downton-shaped hole in television schedules. The series, written by Daisy Goodwin and starring Jenna Coleman as Queen Victoria, quickly became a Sunday evening staple. This month sees it return for a third series. While Queen Victoria and Prince Albert might be the main protagonists of the show, theirs isn’t the only love story to have captured viewers’ hearts. Below stairs, we’ve been caught up in the romance between Mr Francatelli, the Queen’s cook, and Miss Skerrett, her head dresser (who has something of a shady past). The role of Skerrett was an irresistible one for Nell Hudson from the outset. “It was a horrible feeling waiting to hear if I’d got the part,” she recalls. “Normally you hear very quickly. So, I thought, maybe I will hear before the end of the day – and I heard nothing. The next day was Friday and I was checking my phone a million times a minute, but I heard nothing… On Monday I thought, OK, last hope – all day I waited and then at 7pm I finally got the call from my agent telling me that I had got the part. I think I called him a bastard for keeping me hanging so long,” she laughs. For all of the anguish that waiting brings, that phone call with news of a casting is one of the things Nell loves most about her job. “It is this golden drug almost,” she grins. “It is the highest you can feel, ever. It is just incredible. And you sort of enjoy that for five minutes, and then the cliché is that all your neuroses fire up again and you start to think, oh God, help! Can I even play this character?” Having lived in Skerrett’s shoes for so long, Nell had none of those concerns returning for a third season. With each series taking around six months to film, the show has become a huge part of her life. “I think that the lovely thing about returning to a TV series year after year is that you really all just sort of settle in and bother to invest and connect to making friendships, because you know that you are going to be there for a long time,” she explains. “I have made real proper friends for life.” Having good relationships certainly makes for a very easy working environment; Nell goes on to assure me. “Not to mention a productive environment, creatively, because you feel at your safest in that sort of situation.” So what can she tell us about this latest series? “It is mostly lots of secrets…” she shrugs apologetically. “I can tell you we pick up very shortly after we left off. So, things are very much the same with Skerrett and Francatelli. They are engaged, and when we meet them again they are having a very typically ‘them’ push and pull about him wanting to move forwards with their future and their lives together, and her feeling attached to the Queen and more reticent about that.” Though this has been her favourite job to date, Nell, who is also know for playing Laoghaire MacKenzie in Outlander (the STARZ drama series based on Diana Gabaldon's historical time travel book series of the same name), tells me she is looking forward to playing a more modern role. “I have

done so much period drama in the five years since I left drama school,” she explains. “I do have something coming up that is set in the present day. And I am really looking forward to that. You can focus on just inhabiting another character, rather than trying to find the truth of someone who lived in that time – you can really focus on sinking your teeth into who they are as a person, without having to contextualise them as well.” The role in question is in an independent feature film that Nell is producing herself. “It is a sort of Yorgos Lanthimos style film – very absurdist,” she reveals. “We are telling people it is like Get Out, but about the patriarchy rather than about racism, if that makes sense. It is a dark comedy/horror, and we have got some very cool people attached, who we are very excited about. And I will be taking on the lead in that as well.” Producing is something that she would definitely like to do more of. “It is fun being able to have a say in how the story is going to be told, basically – there is my controlling personality!” she laughs. When it comes to how stories are told, she has also, she tells me, dabbled in writing for the screen. Indeed, writing is perhaps the one thing she could have seen herself doing if the acting had not panned out. Right now her writing energies are being channelled in a different direction, though. “I am writing a novel at the moment and it is bringing me a lot of happiness, so hopefully that is something that I will always be able to do alongside acting,” she explains. Nell describes the book as: “sort of like The Secret History, but set in present day London,” and she has hopes that it will one day be published. “I showed a literary agent the first half and she really liked it and told me to finish it. So I am just sort of trying to make myself get around to it. There is something scary about finishing it, because that means that I will have to actually see if it is any good or not,” she laughs.

44

fabricmagazine.co.uk

Along with finishing the book, Nell would like to do a bit of stage work here in London. “I have only done one play since I left drama school, so I am really out of practice. But acting on stage is what I fell in love with when I decided I wanted to be an actor, so it is definitely something that I would like to do again,” she tells me. “I think there are some really cool playwrights out there who I would really like to work with: Alice Birch, Mike Bartlett, Penelope Skinner… I think new writing is really edgy and that really excites me. I think this generation of writers are not just telling stories for the sake of telling stories. There is always an agenda to their writing, and I think that is really cool.” It’s not just the London stage that excites Nell, though: “I am madly in love with this city,” she gushes. “I love that there is always something happening: even if it is 10pm on a Tuesday, there will be something going on if you want it. And it is absolutely, definitely the best place to be for work,” she grins. Speaking of work, she really ought to get back to that writing… but perhaps she’ll just curl up and do a spot of reading… “I think spending an entire day reading on my bed with my dog, Maggie, is my current guilty pleasure,” she laughs. “My boyfriend will get home from work and say, ‘What did you do today?’ And I will say, ‘I just read: I did nothing all day long!’ I love reading, it keeps me sane. And also I love it for the escapism, like how playing a character for me is quite escapist. I love inhabiting another world for a bit.” Not that there is anything wrong with the real world, of course. “I am extremely happy. I think that I have been very lucky and I am excited about the future,” she concludes, with a big smile. Victoria airs on ITV on Sundays at 9pm and you can catch up on ITV Hub

This is Silk

T

hink you’re too busy to treat your tresses? Think again – the most effective frizz control system we’ve come across actually works while you sleep. Local barrister Sonal Keay’s silk pillowcases have something of a cult following, with fans devoted to their antiageing benefits. And now she’s introduced luxurious hair wraps to her collection. “Given that our hair is made out of the same substance as our skin (keratin) it makes sense that silk has many benefits for our hair, too,” she says. Unlike chemicals, which challenge the hair shaft and cuticles, like sulfates do, silk has a natural synergy with our hair and complements and nourishes it, which is why you find it in miniscule amounts in premium shampoos and conditioners. Silk used in this way is beneficial for the hair as it fills the gaps where keratin has been damaged, but it is ultimately a product which is washed off. The real benefits come from wrapping hair in silk each night. Don’t believe us? Give it a try. You’ll experience fewer tangles, less greasy roots, and your hair will be stronger and shinier. Talk about a hair hero. £39.99 (thisissilk.com)

And stretch... If you’re a runner, you’ll know the importance of a good stretch, but you don’t have to be marathon training, or even remotely athletic, to appreciate the newest class from Ten Health & Fitness. Innovative and results-driven, TenStretch is the brainchild of master trainer Erica Foulds, who says: “Often people do not realise how much tension they are holding, and when they release it it’s a relief. They begin to sleep better and move better.” A progression of dynamic stretches work to improve all-round flexibility and mobility, with specific focus on problem areas and muscle groups most adversely affected by the muscular imbalances and postural challenges of 21st century living. Expect steady and controlled movements designed to carefully align the body and produce isolated stretches to specific muscles. It’s challenging, but in a gentle yet dynamic way, and we can’t get enough of it. From £30 for a single class, for more details of times and locations, see ten.co.uk

Exercise is key, she says, in both the recovery from, and the prevention of, many musculoskeletal disorders, so yoga-based postures, meditation and breathing techniques are prescribed as homework. Carla even emails step-by-step instructions to me, so there really are no excuses! Combining an osteopathic method with the ancient practice of yoga allows for an optimum approach to healing, and it feels proactive and positive to be able to continue Carla’s good work when I am at home. The Tiger Who Came to Tea at The Savoy

I

t is only when I see my five-yearold companion’s wide-eyed excitement upon entering the foyer of The Savoy that I realise I have clearly been suffering from five-star fatigue. He has his camera with him and breathlessly asks the concierge if it is OK for him to take pictures, the answer is, of course, “Why certainly, Sir”. Seeing things through his eyes is a joy. We’ve booked afternoon tea as a school holiday treat. But this is no ordinary tea. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of Judith Kerr’s bestselling book, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, The Savoy have teamed up with HarperCollins Children’s Books to produce a very

special tea for their youngest guests. And the chefs have really gone to town laying on the perfect spread – it is a good job that, like the tiger, we are very hungry. Never mind fancy teas, we opt for hot chocolate: creamy and delicious, it comes in a gorgeous illustrated china teapot and is served in dainty cups, made especially for the hotel by Heraldic Pottery. We sip it while tucking into sandwiches – dainty fingers of peanut butter and jelly, and honey roast ham, and pretty whirls of cheese. All simple but extraordinarily tasty. I ask for seconds but my little friend is ready for cakes. They arrive, to squeals

of elation, along with a pair of tiger ears for him to wear (and take away with him afterwards). There are tiger striped scones (served with not just cream and jam, but chocolate spread, too), pink and blue Battenberg (designed to look like Sophie’s distinctive tights), a milk bottle-shaped Kilner jar of yoghurt with a zingy raspberry compote, chocolate dipped cookies and – our favourite – a cup, filled

with moist chocolate cake, topped with cream cheese icing and a fragment of Oreo cookie, with an edible label bearing the legend: ‘Tiger Food’. Our verdict? Probably London’s most purrfect afternoon tea – you’ll have to take my word for it as it was my companion's first ever. LSJ £40 per child (5-12 years old). W

e’ve so long been schooled that carbs are bad for us, that a comforting bowl of pasta has come to feel like it is off limits. But we come bearing good news: thanks to a brand-new book from Julia Azzarello, you don’t need to be running the marathon this month to tuck in. Skinny Pasta (£14.99, Kyle Books) offers the dream: satisfying meals that are big in flavour but low in calories. It is a mix of timeless classics and contemporary interpretations, focusing on fresh, healthy and nutritious ingredients, with many of them vegan, vegetarian, gluten- and dairy-free. And all of the recipes come in at under 500 calories. Here’s a little taster to whet your appetite. Julia says: “This dish is delicious in the spring when asparagus and broad beans come into season. It is vibrant and green – just like the grass after an April shower in your garden, when flowers are blooming and hopes of summer days are not too far away.”

(c) Tara Fisher

METHOD Bring a saucepan of water to the boil, add salt and cook the pasta for 5–7 minutes, or until al dente. Drain, reserving some of the cooking water. Warm a large, deep frying pan, add 1 tablespoon of the oil, the spring onions and carrot and sauté for 2–3 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the broccoli and asparagus and cook for

2 minutes. Add the butter and the remaining 1 tablespoon of oil, along with the pasta, peas, broad beans and cream. Loosen with a little of the pasta water if needed and cook for 2 minutes, then season to taste. Serve in bowls, sprinkled with the herbs, grated or shaved cheese and edible flowers.

Creating a stir If you can’t get through the day without a caffeine fix, head down to Fitzrovia this month, where you’ll find a new kid on the coffee bar block. As well as the classic coffees, you’ll find specialities like the Spanish latte (coffee marbled

If you go down to the Wood today… We hear that the wait may soon be over – Corbin & King’s new St. John’s Wood site looks set to open at the end of this month. The duo, ranked eighth in The Caterer’s Top 100 most powerful people in hospitality, are behind The Wolseley, Colbert, Brasserie Zédel, The Delaunay, Fischer’s and Bellanger, so it goes without saying that we’re excited about their latest venture, Soutine. Not least because it couldn’t be more local. We’re told that it will be similar in many ways to Colbert; an informal neighbourhood rendezvous, taking inspiration from the great boulevard cafés of Paris. x-Pierre Koffmann and Gordon Ramsay chef Arnaud Stevens has won praise (and awards) for his Shoreditch restaurant Plate, so we’re excited for his latest venture, a pub with rooms in the charming National Trust village of West Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. The George & Dragon reopened late last month after a programme of refurbishment, and features 10 luxurious guest bedrooms, an a la carte restaurant and cosy adjoining bar area, all housed in a former coaching inn dating back to the 1700s. The new menus, inspired by Arnaud’s French and British heritage, include mouth-watering delights such as whole slow-roasted guinea fowl; south Devon mussels with homemade sourdough bread; crispy whitebait with cumin salt and spiced Marie Rose sauce; and Chapel & Swan

smoked salmon, with capers, chopped Tracy Swallan eggs and the team’s signature Marmite bread. Provenance is key for Arnaud, who has made it his mission to source the very best local produce – much of it from local supplier EJ Churchill (who supply Tom Kerridge’s The Hand and Flowers). Arnaud says: “My team and I are incredibly excited to start the next chapter at the George & Dragon. It’s an exciting time for us and the opportunity to fully utilise the location and produce that the beautiful village of West Wycombe has to offer is one we look forward to taking on.” We, meanwhile, very much look forward to our country getaway. Take to the streets of the city centre to get a real feel for Roman life. Start your route from Piazza del Campidoglio, where you can visit the Capitoline Museums, see the Basilica di Santa Maria in Ara Coeli, and admire the view of the Roman Forum from the Tarpeian Rock. Then descend the staircase towards Piazza Venezia and walk along Via del Corso, one of the most famous shopping districts in Rome, to the Galleria Alberto Sordi. Hidden between the narrow alleyways behind the gallery you will find the unmissable Trevi Fountain. Return to Via del Corso and turn onto Via di Pietra, which will take you to Piazza di Pietra, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. If you are in Rome on the morning of Easter Sunday, a visit to San Pietro is a must: take a walk through Borgo Pio, the medieval quarter, to get there. You can participate in the mass held in the basilica, which commences at 10am. Entrance is only guaranteed with a free ticket issued by the Pontifical Prefecture. After mass, get lost in the maze of streets in Borgo Pio. Finally, if you’re shopping for chocolate eggs, you’d do well to pay a visit to Pasticceria De Bellis, La Bottega del Cioccolato, Giuliani Fabbrica and Grezzo Raw Chocolate – all of which are particular favourites of mine. REVIEW

SAND AND THE CITY All year desert sunshine and Arabian hospitality await in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, a considered, confident city that melds traditional with state-of-the-art, luxury and tranquility by Penny Clements

M

ore self-assured and less frenetic than neighbouring Dubai, Abu Dhabi has taken a leisurely and measured approach to tourism. But I’m promised that it is not all about the sunbathing – from the bright-white beaches of the Arabian Gulf to the galleries of the Louvre, it seems there is plenty to keep one occupied in the glittering Emirate metropolis of Abu Dhabi. I’m staying just outside the city in one of the newest luxury hotels; situated on the pristine white sands of Saadiyat Island, five-star Rixos opened last October and is already making a name for itself as the place to go. Selling itself on an “all-inclusive, all-exclusive” approach, I’m assured that this luxury resort will take my holiday to the next level. Inspired by the palaces of the Ottoman Empire, the tone for my stay is set the moment I walk into the chic lobby. It is furnished in inviting turquoise and gold tones, and features tall decorative ceilings, water features and white marble floors. My stylish suite is not dissimilar in style, though a beautiful mosaic wall, a palette of gemstone green and dazzling royal blue, a sublime spa-like bathroom and luxurious white linen bed sheets ensure that it does not feel sterile. The room opens out onto a small terrace that overlooks the expertly kept, luscious green gardens and the turquoise sea on the horizon. There is a total of 366 rooms here, plus 12 three- and four-bedroom villas, all with either shared or private pools, direct beach access and a butler service – Rixos Saadiyat Island Resort is certainly vast, but it feels quiet and discreet.

TRAVEL

Out on the beachfront I discover Lounge Bar, which seems a good spot for sunset drinks to celebrate the start of my holiday. Later, I dine at Orient. Set on the fifth floor and boasting extraordinary sea views, this fine dining oriental Turkish restaurant is decked out in red, gold and blue, and looks lavish and inviting. The atmosphere is intimate and relaxed, the background music soothing, the service friendly and the food fabulous – I am not disappointed. Breakfast the next morning – an expansive open buffet – is served at all-day dining restaurant, Turquoise. I’m keen to spend my first day familiarising myself with the resort, and it doesn’t take long to discover that Rixos’ “all-inclusive, all-exclusive” claims do not just refer to the food: the island also boasts a water park complete with wave pool for all ages, a children’s aqua park and Rixy Kids Club to keep the little ones happy. For the adults there’s the Anjana, a spa inspired by the age-old wellness customs of Turkey. Nestled within the resort, it’s the place to go if you want to unwind in the sauna, relax in the steam room, or take a peaceful dip in the private outdoor pool. I am up and out in the pre-dawn darkness the next morning, ready for a desert safari excursion. A short 40-minute drive sees me in the heart of the desert at the Arabian Nights Village. It is a low adobe style retreat surrounded by ancient stone walls, that is seemingly miles from civilisation. After a very light buffet breakfast (and you definitely need to go light), I’m greeted by my desert expert. As I climb into the 4x4 I have no idea what lies ahead. It’s a bumpy ride and within minutes we are bouncing off and over the sand dunes. We fly up one dune and down another, cutting shapes in the sand. I hold on to the roll bar above my head for dear life, convinced we are going to barrel it down and be lost forever in the shifting sand dunes of Abu Dhabi. I needn’t worry though, this guy really is an expert, and after about 20 minutes we stop on one of the highest dunes, where we jump out and marvel at the 360-degree views of the deserted landscape. Nothing short of an adventure: the journey has been exhilarating, death-defying and magical all at the same time. Later in my stay, I arrange a visit the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Ten years in the making, the complex, especially the geometric dome, is a work of art in itself. I marvel at French

architect Jean Nouvel’s unique use of light, and happily spend time simply wandering around under the dome. The art on display is equally impressive: the permanent collections and temporary exhibits include loans from 13 French museums, including the original Louvre in Paris, housed in the 12 galleries spread throughout 55 buildings. It is seriously impressive stuff. I find more cultural fulfilment at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. One of the world’s largest mosques, it is named after the late president, who wanted to build a place that showcased the cultural diversity of Islam side-by-side with modern architecture and art. Known for its white colour – symbolising purity and piety – this place is brilliantly beautiful and best enjoyed in silence as the sun sets. I have been blown away by Abu Dhabi. With balmy temperatures year-round, a seven-hour flight and a very manageable three-hour time difference, whether for a long weekend or a whole week away, the UAE certainly seems to have it all. And you can guarantee that a warm welcome awaits – as the locals say bayte baytak (my house is your house). All-inclusive rates start from £360 per person, per night, staying in a deluxe garden view room (+90 216 444 1797; saadiyatisland.rixos.com)

A home library is every bibliophile’s dream: we want our beloved books to have a special place in our properties. If space is at a premium, you don't need a dedicated room to house a hefty collection of well-thumbed novels or oversized design books, as these clever designs show by Ali Howard

In a complete refurbishment of this Bloomsbury property, west London architects Stiff + Trevillion were tasked with increasing usable space and introducing daylight into the middle of a deep plan. A major focus of the award-winning project is the imposing wall of books that draws the eye up and above the mezzanine level. Sleek mid-century furniture and lighting pieces in black, white and natural wood contrast with the owner’s vibrant collection of books, awarding the tomes pride of place in an otherwise neutral setting, while natural daylight floods in from a huge flanking window, casting light on their colourful spines. For architect Ben Kilburn and his wife Jane, the only way was up when it came to displaying the reading material in this, their own ambitious home project. Converting three flats into a lofty five-bed family house gave Ben free rein to play with height. The upper and lower ground floors of the property were opened up to connect both storeys of living space, allowing for a double-height library wall that makes use of every available square inch – even wrapping the doorway in bespoke shelving to accommodate the books. Mia Karlsson Interior Design came to this Regency house in Notting Hill with a brief to create a modern, practical and clean family home. Proving it’s never too early to own a bespoke home library, the Highgate-based studio came up with a dedicated reading space for the littlest of bookworms. With an impressive collection of picture books, all that was needed was a shallow shelving unit with supportive dowling to accommodate the frontfacing titles. While little ones might need help to reach the upper shelves, the floor-to-ceiling wall of colour in a mono contemporary scheme offers a big impact. (miakarlsson.co.uk)

Today’s living spaces need to work harder than ever, with multifunctionality high on our list of demands. A general move towards more flexible working means the home office often plays a big role in open-plan arrangements. Go Modern’s LEMA Selecta rises to the design challenge, comprising a bookcase, TV and home office rolled into one. The modular system is made up of hundreds of individual components, allowing homeowners to create a bespoke library with an integrated work station – perfect for grabbing just the right book when inspiration strikes. Emily Murray Blogger and author

This uniquely styled London pad mixes influencer Emily's penchant for all things pink with a shrewd eye for design by Ali Howard

T

hree years after launching her blog, The Pink House, and as one of Instagram’s best-loved influencers, Emily Murray has turned @pinkhouseliving into an aspirational interiors book that, by her own admission, doesn’t take itself too seriously. Her aim? To inspire readers to create a home that makes them truly happy. Here, she shows us around her own London home, which she shares with her husband and two young boys What do you usually look for in a property? I’m a sucker for a period property. I always lived in characterful homes as a kid, and the two London flats and Edinburgh terrace I owned before buying this house were both Victorian. I guess I look for a sense of history; a personality. I like my home to connect me to the lives that have gone before. Other than that, our main requirement in this house was that it had access to a great outdoor space for the boys. We certainly found that! Tell me about the property It’s a five-bed Edwardian house built on top of a hill. It backs onto a beautiful private park, which plays hosts to parties, camping weekends, tennis tournaments and barbecues. The park is accessible only from the houses on its perimeter and it’s the main reason we bought the property. That, and the amazing views of the city on the other side. How have you personalised the space? By adding lots of colour (including plenty of pink!), texture, pattern, some off-beat, unexpected touches, and a whole load of books, some of which are colour-coded. I also wanted to bring nature into the house as a reminder of the beautiful space outside. It’s like an oasis of countryside in the big city. Have you done any structural work? No, although we did replace the existing kitchen worktop with a gorgeous slab of Carrara marble; reinstate Edwardian-style cornicing; uncover and polish original floorboards; and have had various fitted cupboards, shelves

62

and wardrobes installed throughout the house. The structural work starts this summer, when we plan to add a shower room extension and open up the middle of the house to create a much bigger hallway, with more storage for the huge piles of football kit our kids now own. How does your online presence inform your interiors choices? I’m always catching sight of a gorgeous room on Instagram and thinking, ooh, that’s a clever idea

– I’ve started saving my favourites. But I try not to take too much from Insta as it can become a bit of an echo chamber where the same ideas keep circulating. I get fresh inspiration from hotels, bars and restaurants, as well as travel and fashion. I also love discovering new brands as a way of keeping things interesting. Which brands are your favourites? For all I like to discover new brands, there are a number I keep coming back to because they

always get it right. These include Bert & May (dreamy encaustic tiles and beautiful bathroom fittings), Buster + Punch (the coolest brass handles and light switches), House of Hackney (kings of maximalism), Cole & Son (they have an amazing wallpaper for every occasion), Graham & Green (their catalogue sucks me in every time), Muck N Brass (luxecyclers who live down the road) and Alternative Flooring (stunning patterned carpets). My new favourite is River Island Home for fun affordable bits that make a statement. What was your best thrifty find for the house? The vintage corner drinks cabinet I picked up for a steal in Edinburgh and which Muck N Brass luxecycled for me. In the photoshoot for Pink House Living it’s painted green and gold, but I recently got them to paint pink over the green and now I love it even more. It looks lush against my Farrow & Ball Hague Blue sitting room walls. And the most extravagant? The most extravagant items in the house are the two House of Hackney ceramic cheetah lampstands with fringed lampshades, which we use as bedside lamps. They were a 40th birthday present from the husband (he took the subtle hint) and they take the room to the next level.

Which is your favourite room? The kitchen. It’s got everything going for it: a pink and green colour scheme (my favourite combination); loads of plants and planty prints; beautiful ceramic tiles and marble worktops; my incredible De’Longhi coffee machine, which I can operate remotely with my phone; a view out over our south-facing back garden and the park beyond. It’s pretty much my favourite place in the whole world, especially if there’s an open bottle of pink Champagne kicking about...

Area guide Marylebone Old timers rub shoulders with trendy new boutiques, and traditional caffs mingle among Michelin-starred establishments: the winning village-vibe here might feel like a happy accident, but the cleverly balanced businesses have been carefully curated. As recently as the mid-nineties, one third of all of the shops on Marylebone High Street were empty, urging the Howard de Walden Estate – responsible for around 92 acres of property in the area – to implement a strategy of rejuvenation, encouraging new tenants in the form of key community services such as newsagents and dry cleaners, alongside restaurateurs and fashion retailers paying competitive West End rents. The strategy has paid off, Marylebone is now one of London’s most desirable areas. And what a place to live – housing stock here ranges from grand Georgian townhouses situated around gracious garden squares, to smaller early Victorian terraced houses, and quaint mews properties, while the flat market is characterised by a mix of ’30s mansion blocks and luxurious newbuild apartments. No wonder so many of us would love to make Marylebone our next move Photography Kathy Anne Lim

Local heroes A.O.K Kitchen & Bakery

This newly opened eatery, the brainchild of restaurateur Kelly Landesberg, is all about inclusivity, and turns the notion of special dietary requirements on its head: rather than seeing them as an inconvenience, the menu is actually based around gluten- and dairy-free produce, promoting health and wellness as part and parcel of its delicious offering. How’s that for forward thinking? Alex Ross from Savills says: “It’s set to be one of the area’s latest trendy spots and offers a healthy take on typical dishes.” 52-55 Dorset Street, W1U (020 3889 9400; aokkitchen.co.uk)

“Marylebone is popular for its flats, both purpose built and period conversions, and also for its stately Georgian homes. Prices start at £650,000 for a one-bed flat, £900,000 for a two-bed, and £2 million for a three-bed. Smaller houses are currently starting at £2 million and for large family houses, prices can range anywhere from £5-£15 million.”

La Brasseria Milanese

A family-owned Italian in the heart of Marylebone, this buzzy restaurant offers a full complement of breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner menus, as well as a comprehensive wine list. And in such stylish surrounds, it would be tempting to stay seated for all of it. Richard Douglas, director of Marylebone’s Beauchamp Estates, would wholeheartedly agree: “They’ve just had a refit and it looks amazing,” he says, adding that he looks forward to eating here in the summer. “The tables outside are a sun trap. It’s the best al fresco dining in Marylebone and of course, the food’s great!” 42 Marylebone High Street, W1U (020 7486 3753; labrasseria.com)

Marylebone’s Psycle offers local gluttons for punishment a collection of class-based workouts designed to help clear the mind and tone the body. Aston Chase’s Mark Pollack is a regular here: “I love cycling so this is a quick fix if I haven’t got time to hit the roads,” he says. “There are few other workouts as dynamic, within a limited period of time, which suit my busy schedule.” 76 Mortimer Street, W1W (020 3150 2644; psyclelondon.com)

My perfect day starts by taking my dog, Arthur, to Regent’s Park: you can’t beat a walk there on a sunny, crisp day. I absolutely love being outside and I find being around nature really grounding. I am lucky to be able to get my morning coffee right here at A.O.K, but when I want a bit of variety, I go to The Monocle Cafe, which is still very much a favourite. We are proud of the healthy menu at A.O.K Kitchen & Bakery, but I also love to eat at Il Blandford’s. Jessica, who is in charge, runs an excellent business and the pizzas are just delicious. FABRIC PROMOTION

ONE OF A KIND FOR ONE NORTH LONDON SCHOOL, NURTURING HEALTHY SELF-CONFIDENCE AND ENCOURAGING KINDNESS EACH AND EVERY DAY COMES ABOVE ALL ELSE

Making choices about your child’s education can feel like a daunting prospect. It goes without saying that you want to find a school with fantastic facilities and a team of inspiring, experienced teachers, who will encourage your child to learn and help them to grow. Add to that feeling safe in the knowledge that a school will prepare pupils not just for exams, but for anything that life may present. But how to find such a place? Experts suggest that as revealing as prospectuses and results are, sometimes the most important thing is to get a sense of a school's ethos: staff come and go, extra-curricular activities change, but a school's ethos will be much more lasting. Sir Frederick Treves, the great Victorian doctor who famously treated Joseph Merrick (‘the Elephant Man’), is quoted as saying: "Don't worry about genius, and don't worry about not being clever. Trust rather to hard work, perseverance, and determination… You hold your future in your own hands.” This sentiment of having a sense of responsibility for self is one that the team at Lyndhurst House, an independent preparatory and pre-

preparatory school for boys aged four to thirteen, agree with wholeheartedly. Their focus is on providing a full and rounded education, which, for them, means paying particular attention to the individual needs of every pupil. This is achieved through keeping class sizes small throughout the school. In this way, staff are able to give boys the individual attention they need – whether that means pushing them on towards

scholarship work or giving them extra support in areas where they may be struggling. Reflecting its diverse north west London community, the school is nondenominational and welcomes families of all religions and all cultures. Boys are taught to be tolerant and respectful of the opinions of others. Put simply, they are taught to value the importance of kindness. Ask a Lyndhurst House boy what the most important thing about being at the school is and he may give you many answers: to have fun, to work hard, to make the most of your opportunities… but the most common answer will be to be kind to each other. Headmaster Andrew Reid says: “In a world where we see so many examples of people acting intolerantly and with anger, we believe that the next generation should understand the need to listen to others with patience, to express one’s opinions with restraint, and to take time out when tempted to act or speak in haste.” Lyndhurst House School, 24 Lyndhurst Gardens, NW3 (020 7435 4936; lyndhursthouse.co.uk)

Abercorn School What attracted you to the school? It offers a mix of traditional British education with future-focused attention to the needs of an everchanging world. How would you sum it up? Abercorn shapes thought with purpose, identifying and enriching talent while developing and nurturing capability to make sure every child succeeds.

THOUGHT PIECE

Does your child’s school offer value for money?

I

f you’re prone to neck problems, you might want to avoid graphs depicting the rise of London school fees. According to the Independent Schools Council, they rose by 24 per cent between 2012 and 2017, taking the average annual day fee to £16,572. This has put private education out of the reach of families who could previously have afforded it. It also explains why St Paul’s School has introduced a bursary scheme to offer “more generous support to families with incomes less than £120k.” In fact, a growing investment in bursaries is one of the reasons for the steep rise; state-of-the-art recording studios and 50-metre swimming pools is another. But with schools racing to out-do each other on the facilities front, how do you know which one offers the best value? “As independent schools tend not to run SATs, it’s going to come down to what matters to you,” says The Good Schools Guide’s Francis Hamlyn. “For parents who don’t get home until 7pm, an extra hour of education can add value, as can the range

of after-school activities on offer. Children can now try their hand at everything from drama and creative writing, to stamp collecting and sport. “Many parents also value smaller class sizes because they usually bring better results. With many state school classes having 30 or more pupils, it’s not uncommon to find children in the private sector taught in groups of 15 or fewer.” Your child’s strengths and interests are another important factor, says Francis. “If they’re great at sports, central London schools may not be the best choice, as they don’t usually have facilities close by,” he advises. “In that case, you could consider boarding schools outside the Capital, which have more space for playing fields and sports pitches. “Finally, an academic child won’t necessarily thrive in the hothouse environment of the Capital’s best (and most expensive) day schools. Many nonselective schools still get great results because they have small class sizes and plenty of teacher contact. Describe the atmosphere It’s bursting with the personalities and aspirations of all connected with it. There’s an atmosphere of engagement and common purpose, with shared values and collective pride. Each of our three sites feels homely, too, which makes building relationships easier. How do you balance your extra-curricular activities with the academic side? We offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities, which take place both on and off campus and within and outside of the normal school day. SCHOOLS

FABRIC PROMOTION

CAPITAL EDUCATION THOUGH NOT SURROUNDED BY FRESH AIR AND ROLLING FIELDS, LONDON SCHOOLS CAN PROVIDE EVERYTHING THAT THEIR COUNTRYSIDE COUNTERPARTS OFFER, AND MUCH MORE, SAYS NORTH LONDON SCHOOL GROUP, NORTH BRIDGE HOUSE

L

ondon is a wonderful, cosmopolitan city, but its crowded, chaotic culture can sometimes taint its educational appeal, particularly for parents seeking the best, allround education for their child. Though it may be tempting to move, or explore boarding provision, it is worth exploring all that London schools have to offer, from high academic standards to specialist sports facilities. North London school group, North Bridge House utilises the rich diversity of the city itself to facilitate academic excellence and character development way beyond the curriculum. “London’s rich culture and heritage act as an extension of the classroom; they enable teaching well beyond the boundaries of the school,” says the Head of North Bridge House Senior Hampstead, Brendan Pavey With campuses in Hampstead, Islington and Regent’s Park, North Bridge House School finds itself perfectly placed, with the world’s top museums, galleries and music venues all within easy reach. Furthermore, London’s famous landmarks, beautiful parks and

open spaces all enrich pupils’ learning on a daily basis. And while the school’s unique campuses – including charming Victorian villas, a grand former convent, an impressive five-storey building and a Grade II listed Tudor house – may not have big outdoor playing fields, with Hampstead Heath, Regent’s Park and Highbury Fields as their home grounds and everyday outdoor sport facilities, they have arguably upped their game. “For children fortunate enough to be educated in and around the Capital, the diversity of culture, business and character offer fresh, exciting experiences every day,” says Jonathan Taylor, Head of North Bridge House Senior Canonbury. “Where else can students spend the morning at the Chemistry Bar in the Science Museum’s Wonderlab, the afternoon doing work experience with international business leaders in the City, play a sporting fixture with local rivals after school, and enjoy an evening performance of Tosca in the West End?” London is big, but it is also local – it is a series of villages, all of which enjoy their own unique

resources. On North Bridge House Senior Canonbury’s doorstep, for example, is the prestigious Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art. Through a partnership with the gallery, students visit regularly, develop a contextual understanding of the artwork and even host student takeovers to debate what they see, feel and hear. This in-depth experience wouldn’t be achievable if the school were not so close by.

Similarly, North Bridge House Nursery and Pre-Prep Schools have developed strong community links with local charities, including the Age UK Camden centre, where the children regularly sing for the elderly residents. It goes without saying that London is an enormous generator of talent and opportunity. To compete in the highly competitive international job market, school leavers need ‘global skills’. At North Bridge House, this means that students learn how to think for themselves and to deliver creative and innovative solutions to problems through direct experience of innovative business, which London has in abundance. North Bridge House’s World of Work programme has developed partnerships with London businesses spanning all major industry sectors, including creative, high tech, engineering, legal, medical and finance. This helps to prepare students for their future careers and provides endless resources to enhance the curriculum taught in the classroom. Everything adds up to the most rounded of educations. Directory Future-proofing your kitchen

I

nstalling a brand new kitchen is one of life’s biggest expenses and a task you don't want to repeat too often. To get the most out of your new kitchen it’s wise to think about future proofing when deciding on a design. You can do this by opting for a classic contemporary scheme that won’t look dated come next season, but will maintain a fresh aesthetic. Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets, with their London showroom on Chalk Farm Road, specialise in high quality kitchen cabinetry with a timeless appeal. Their collection of solid wood cabinets, doors and worktops is finished to the highest standard and, with their large stock-

holding, you don’t have to wait the usual six weeks for delivery. Lead-time is just 14 working days, meaning you can be sat in your brand new kitchen enjoying a cuppa in no time. So what style do you opt for if you want your kitchen to pass the test of time? Showroom manager Marek Nagajek advises: “Modern touches within a traditional style will mean that none of your creature comforts are lost in an effort to create a particular look.” For him, Shaker style is a kitchen trend that’s not going anywhere. “I don’t see Shaker style doors ever disappearing from our homes,” he says. “The style is that popular.”

Q&A

Catherine Aitken

Designer at Another Country

Showroom assistant Robert Kigozi agrees, saying: “Shaker kitchens, amongst other classic English looks, have never been more in fashion.” With Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets’ vast product range to choose from, you can design a kitchen full of bespoke charm. From base cabinets to oven housing units, to curved and wall cabinets and solid oak doors, there’s plenty of options available to suit every taste. The company also supply a range of timber worktops and frontal accessories, including cornices and pelmets, to allow you to complete your kitchen in style. “Coupled with another British favourite, Farrow & Ball paints,” says Solid Wood Kitchen Cabinets’ Director, Dan Wilson, “we are providing a look that’s not only quintessentially English, but can be adapted to suit any setting. The colour options mean the possibilities are endless.” 70 Chalk Farm Road, NW1 (020 7485 7203; solidwoodkitchencabinets.co.uk)

How did Another Country come about? The brand was launched in 2010, around the time there was much focus on design-led, fast furniture, and our founder, Paul de Zwart, saw a market (and a need) for furniture that was the antithesis of this. It started with a carefully crafted stool, Stool One and from there Series One was born. What can we expect from a visit to your showroom? A range of furniture pieces from across our collections, complemented by a selection of accessories and lighting. It’s a modest but charming space, perfect for browsing or sitting down to review fabrics for your new sofa! What’s your design ethos? Our mission is to be a responsible, purposeful and useful company that’s fit for the 21st century, and our ambition is to sell our sustainably made furniture to as many people as possible. To do this, we strive to balance craft and industry. What are your eco-creds? We aim to run our business as sustainably as possible: we use wood from sustainably managed forests and natural fibres and fillings for our upholstery, furthermore we make to order to minimise waste, and consider the entire lifecycle of our products. Any new releases? You can expect a new shelving system designed by Mathias Hahn, a new chair by Alain Gilles, and a new edition to our much loved Hardy Collection, the Hardy Stacking Chair. 18 Crawford Street, W1H (020 7486 3251; anothercountry.com)

Property news 60 SECONDS

Alex Bourne

Beauchamp Estates Why I love London… The food, culture, diversity, architecture and energy. If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… a food critic. Though that may be pure indulgence, in which case I’d revert to my previous: actor. Or else interior designer and architect. Favourite London Street? Marylebone High Street. Best sale? A Knightsbridge property that sold for £16 million in a 48-hour exchange. Favourite place? Claridge’s. I got married there so it has a special place in my heart.

Hail a Hamptons

Favourite place to grab a coffee? Fischer’s – great coffee, tempting cakes.

T

o celebrate a whopping 150 years of estate agency, Hamptons International has launched a fleet of branded London cabs displaying the impressive strapline, “Moving together since 1869”. Throughout the year, the taxis, in blue, gold and white, will be making some guest appearances at a number of high profile London events, including the Chelsea Flower Show and Open Garden Squares Weekend. Lesley Cairns, managing director of Hamptons International, says: “We couldn’t be happier with our branded taxis and look forward to seeing them in action. London’s black cabs are part of our Capital’s great heritage and with a history of 150 years in the property industry, Hamptons International are very proud to promote our big anniversary year on the iconic London cab, recognised worldwide.” Next time you hail a cab, make sure it’s a history-making Hamptons one. Where do you go for head space in the city? In spring and summer, the meditation garden in Regent’s Park, otherwise I just try to find a quiet coffee shop.

Better together Eagle-eyed property seekers may have noticed that Benham and Reeves’ individual sales and lettings companies have recently merged under one ownership to become, simply, Benham & Reeves. The brand now offers property sales alongside the existing lettings business for the first time in decades. Managing director Anita Mehra has for a long time wished to see the two companies unite. “I am delighted we’re now returning to a single, united lettings and sales business,” she says. “It was always a logical fit and means we can now assist clients throughout the entire lifecycle of a property investment, from purchase to lettings, furnishings or refurbishment, to property management and eventual sale.” (benhams.com)

What’s your hidden talent? I am a really good chef and not a bad crooner. Period property or newbuild? I always wanted a period property but ended up living in a new-build: I think the attraction of period for me was the design detail and proportions of rooms, but modern design and building techniques are increasingly delivering all this and more. Take one person, dead, alive or fictional, out in London – who and where? My grandfather, who I’m named after, but never got to meet: I’d show him how London has changed since he lived here and end our tour with tea in Claridge’s.

Living socially is the new living well Luxury Living Exclusively for the Over 60s. Who said later living was all about winding down? With 20% of the current UK population expected to see its 100th birthday, what it means to retire is changing. Technology, travel and improved healthcare are just a few reasons why today’s retiree is seeking a life full of culture, trips abroad and keeping active. Property developers have had to meet this demand, by designing flexible accommodation that can easily cater to larger social gatherings, whilst also keeping within the parameters of quiet space and home comforts. Take Belle Vue for example, a cleverly designed development by PegasusLife that is a true demonstration of how social spaces can be brought to life in Hampstead. The PegasusLife ethos is all about nurturing close-knit communities - therefore the arrangement of all shared spaces, including entrance lobbies and corridors, lounges and leisure areas are designed to create opportunities for social interaction.

Why not start the evening with a quick glass of champagne before heading out into the local scene. In fact, Belle Vue allows any culture vulture to nip into central London to enjoy world-class shows, restaurants and galleries whenever they please. There’s certainly no shortage of things to do in and around the development, offering the very best facilities to support homeowners to live well.
