WHAT’S ON IN LONDON

What to see and do in the Capital this April

MUSICAL

Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations

Get ready: this Tony-award winning Broadway production features the velvety harmonies and signature dance moves of the iconic Detroit vocal group – and it promises to be one bighearted, toe-tapping, finger-clicking affair. We defy you not to get up and dance. Prince Edward Theatre, Old Compton Street, W1D (0344 482 5151; london. ainttooproudmusical. com)

SCULPTURE Lynda Benglis

Known for her visceral exploration of materials, the American artist shows a selection of large-scale, liquid-like bronzes in this mustsee exhibition. The sculptures are clay in origin but have been digitally blown out of proportion and cast in metal to create twisted, hyper-polished pieces. Until 29 April, Thomas Dane Gallery, 3 Duke Street, SW1Y (020 7925 2505; thomasdanegallery.com)

EXHIBITION Nikoleta Sekulovic: The Strawberry Thief

This Barcelona-based artist presents a collection of female nudes set against the vibrant patterns of William Morris’ textile designs. Centring the mother as muse, each of Sekulovic’s sitters, whether a friend or family member, is a mum, like the artist herself. 1-28 April, Rebecca Hossack Gallery, 2a Conway Street, W1T (020 7436 4899; rebeccahossack.com)

THEATRE A Midsummer Night’s Dream

The Globe’s artistic director Michelle Terry takes on the mischief-making Puck in this magical production of Shakespeare’s most intoxicating comedy, which marks the opening of the open-air theatre’s summer season. Why not whisk yourself away to the enchanted forest? 27 April-12 August, Shakespeare’s Globe, 21 New Globe Walk, Bankside, SE1 (020 7401 9919; shakespearesglobe.com)

MUSIC La Linea

Global stars of the Latin scene will once again descend on the Capital for this annual celebration of the best sizzling music. The festival boasts an eclectic line-up including Susana Baca, Dengue Dengue Dengue!, Grupo Luma, and the New Regency Orchestra. 21 April-7 May, various London venues (lalineafestival.com)

A HOMECOMING FOR JEWELLER HARRIET KELSALL

Known for design, craftsmanship and ethics, jeweller Harriet Kelsall will introduce their industry changing approach to bespoke design to a whole new audience thanks to the opening of a fourth studio

The bespoke jewellery specialists Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery, based on Regent’s Park Road in Primrose Hill, and in Cambridge and North Hertfordshire, are opening their fourth studio and shop in the heart of the historic city of St. Albans, bringing with them 25 years of experience and their revolutionary approach to bespoke design. All studios have won numerous awards for their store design, merchandising and customer service.

At the new studio and shop, unique engagement rings, wedding rings, eternity rings, and dress jewellery designed by the team will be showcased, as well as extensive displays that explain the ease of commissioning a oneof-a-kind piece of jewellery. Customers of HK Bespoke feel empowered to join in with the bespoke design process, as the expert designers capture every customer’s unique story, with many one-off designs reflecting the stories and personal experiences of the people who commission them. Here, gemstones will dazzle, and past designs will inspire you to start your own bespoke journey and bring your unique story to life in the form of beautiful jewellery.

All jewellery designed at the studio-cum-shop will be made locally at the multi-award-winning Jewellery Centre & Workshop, less than an hour away in rural Hertfordshire. At 3,500 sq ft, it’s an impressive space that houses a newly extended and refurbished workshop. What’s ticking in the watch world? Coming ahead of this month’s Watches and Wonders, investors in the know looked to LVMH’s Watch Week for their first glimpse of what’s in store when it comes to the latest watch trends. The world leader in luxury, the LVMH Group was founded in 1987 and today comprises 75 exceptional Maisons across wines and spirits, fashion and leather goods, perfumes and cosmetics, and watches and jewellery. At January’s event in Singapore, LVMH watch brands TAG Heuer, Zenith, Bulgari and Hublot showcased their latest designs, setting the tone for the year to come. We take a look at some of the highlights.

BULGARI

Underlining the brand’s roots in jewellery design, this year’s dazzling collection highlights the concept of time as a jewel, with gem-set watches taking centre stage.

Slim and elegant, in the Diva’s Dream collection (from £35,900), mobile petals featuring brilliantly coloured topazes, tanzanites, amethysts, tourmalines, rubies and diamonds are set in rose gold around a pearly face, designed to flutter, impelled by the movement of the wrist. Meanwhile, the Diva’s Dream Mosaica (POA) models feature spectacular bejewelled faces and diamond encrusted bracelets crafted by Bulgari’s master goldsmiths.

The irresistible Serpenti designs (from £4,620) play on the talisman-like allure of the snake, curving elegantly around the wrist like a bracelet. In this year’s model, Serpenti Tubogas Infinity (£61,000), diamonds continue the serpentine silhouette all the way from the watch case to the bracelet. The double twirl rose gold bracelet is set with 172 diamonds, while 262 diamonds pave the dial and 44 are set around the dial. Truly spectacular. bulgari.com

TAG HEUER

Since 1860, watchmaking pioneer TAG Heuer has been blending technological innovations, high-precision timing and cutting-edge designs to create products whose performance continues to shape the passing of time. And 2023 is a year of classics celebrated.

The iconic Carrera reaches its 60th anniversary this year, and the milestone is marked with the release of the Carrera Chronograph 60th Anniversary edition (£5,600) in a limited release of just 600 pieces. A faithful reinterpretation of the original, it features a striking ‘panda’ dial and a perforated black calfskin leather racing strap with pin buckle. Functional and elegant, it looks as good now as it did in 1963.

The Monza is another classic revisited for 2023 in the Flyback Chronometer (£11,450) A contemporary tribute to the link between the company and competitive motor sport, the watch offers a chronograph, a tachymeter scale which indicates average speed for a 1-kilometer or 1-mile distance, and a pulsometer. In an eye-catching, ultra lightweight forged carbon case, it features a striking black skeleton dial and smoked blue sapphire crystal subdials offer a view of the internal movement, echoing the piece’s mechanical roots. tagheuer.com

Chalcedony, a crystalline semitranslucent stone is used for the face of the DEFY Extreme Glacier

ZENITH

The focus for this Swiss brand was on its integrated-bracelet sports watches, in particular, some very chic new iterations of the DEFY range. The DEFY Extreme Glacier (£23,100) is a particular highlight – one of only a handful of chronographs that can measure up to 1/100th of a second. With an ice blue dial made from precisely cut and polished chalcedony, it is set in a sleek titanium case, and is limited to only 50 pieces, each unique thanks to natural variations in the chalcedony. Blurring the lines between precision watchmaking and sculptural, wearable art, this watch was directly inspired by the barren frozen landscapes referenced in its name.

Last year’s DEFY Skyline has also been updated for 2023, retaining the multi-faceted face, but now coming in a more feminine 36mm case with a choice of bright pink or mint green dial (£7,500) And the DEFY Skyline Skeleton (£9,700) offers a view of the internal mechanical movements. The open dial comes in black or blue and has been designed in a striking four-pointed star shape. With its geometrical silhouette, the Skyline Skeleton has a pleasingly edgy, architectural aesthetic. zenith-watches.com

HUBLOT

For its first ever watch, Hublot daringly combined gold with a rubber strap in a sporty case, with a design inspired by a ship’s porthole (‘Hublot’ in French). Thus the art of fusion was born. The brand’s guiding principle is to strive to be first, to be unique, to be different, and this year’s watches certainly do that.

Continuing Hublot’s exploration of SAXEM –an alloy of sapphire, aluminium oxide and rareearth minerals that is used in the manufacture of satellites and lasers – the Big Bang Tourbillon (£182,000) is a powerful, bright neon yellow colour which almost seems to glow from the inside. And it comes in a limited edition of just 50 watches.

Equally colourful are two new gem-set Big Bang models made from King Gold, an alloy containing platinum that offers a warmer colour. Rubies, pink sapphires, amethysts, blue sapphires, blue topazes, tsavorites, yellow sapphires and orange sapphires, each with their own unique hue, create a magical rainbow effect on the bracelet, bezel and dial – there are 174 gemstones in total for the Big Bang Integrated (£146,000) and 176 gemstones for the Big Bang Time Only (£137,000), and the bracelet for each piece features 768 and 748 set gemstones respectively. A feast for the eyes. hublot.com

LEARNING TO LET

Niamh Algar explains how her latest role gave her a new appreciation of the work done by the NHS, and made her realise the importance of switching off at the end of the day and leaving the stresses of work on set

Produced by World Productions, the team behind Line of Duty, and directed by Philip Barantini, who brought us the multiple Baftanominated Boiling Point, ITV’s newest thriller Malpractice has already piqued the interest of critics ahead of its release this month. Through the cat and mouse drama of a medical investigation, the series, written by former emergency doctor Grace Ofori-Attah, tells the story of a damaged doctor caught up in a dangerous conspiracy.

That lead, Dr. Lucinda Edwards, is played by Niamh Algar, the 2018 Screen International Star of Tomorrow and 2019 BAFTA Breakthrough Brit who is known for her roles in Shane Meadows’ The Virtues and true crime honeytrap drama Deceit. “The story begins on the most nightmarish shift of her life, that ends in the death of a young overdose patient,” Niamh tells me. “And so, an enquiry is launched into this young lady’s death, and we follow this doctor and her journey through trying to deal with this inquest, while managing her home life. But it is not like your typical, linear narrative. There are so many obstacles that are thrown in the way, and when you think you have something figured out, then another thing happens.”

Alongside the appeal of such a stellar team, the character was very tempting for Niamh. “I really felt for her,” she explains. “She was in this really unfair position. Coming from a family where my sister-in-law worked in A&E and my mum was a nurse, I felt that it really captured the pressure

that medical staff are under, and the scrutiny, and I just really wanted to be involved in it. It was a no brainer really.”

With its many twists and turns, the show is an intense viewing experience, and Niamh assures me that filming the series was equally intense. “I would be lying if I said it wasn’t,” she laughs. “It was an endurance of a shoot, but an incredibly rewarding one. There were a lot of factors to keep track of. With a show like this, we don’t shoot it linearly, so because it was such a massive arc for the character, where one thing is affecting the next action, mentally tracking that was definitely challenging. Then, on top of that, there were the medical procedures.”

Niamh was keen to give as accurate a portrayal of this aspect as she could. “Before starting this project, I consulted with as many A&E staff as I could, to get a greater understanding of what it would be like to work in that environment. I went through the script from beginning to end and took out the medical procedures and medical terminology, and broke it all down to understand exactly what was being talked about,” she explains. The most valuable insights came from shadowing an A&E consultant’, she tells me. “For me, I work visually, and I have to be able to see what it is that I am doing, or saying, for it to make sense. It was an absolutely incredible experience,” she recalls. “Just to get that opportunity to see first-hand, from start to finish of a shift. This woman that I was shadowing, she took about a half an hour break in a 12-hour shift. It is an incredibly emotionally and physically

Niamh wears, opposite page: dress by Dior, and earrings by Rachel Boston

taxing job, and just to see the level of skill that these people have is absolutely fascinating.”

Indeed, it gave her a whole new appreciation of what doctors do. “It’s the idea that you’re dealing with someone on the worst day of their life, on repeat,” she explains. “And that must be very emotionally taxing. It is a profession that I feel we have taken for granted too often; it is only now, because of all the strikes that are happening, that people are listening. It is mind boggling that there is such little empathy toward them from the government; maybe, if they went in and saw for themselves what is expected… For people to be waiting five, six hours on hospital chairs to get seen by a doctor. And the doctors know that by the time they get to them, they don’t even have a bed for them. She described it, I remember, this doctor described it to me as like being kicked in the leg before a race, and then your boss asking you at the end of the race why you didn’t win. And I was like, God, that kind of says everything!”

Something else that the consultant said while they were working together has stuck with Niamh. “We were nearing the end of one of the shifts and I asked her: ‘How do you turn off after this?’,” she recalls. “Because a lot had happened in one of the nights that I was there. And I was like: ‘How do you go home and turn off?’. And I think it was one of the first times I had asked her a question that she found hard to answer, and she was like, ‘I don’t!’.”

It was a throwaway comment that gave Niamh pause for thought about how she herself switched off once filming had begun. Though she might not have been responsible for the lives of others, the stress proved hard to shake off. “It felt real, but it was not real,” she explains. “I think that is the important thing to remember: this is not happening. It is pretend, but your body does not know that. It has created these chemicals in your brain that tell you that something bad has happened. I think that is the hard reset to have, conditioning yourself to let go of a lot of stuff that you’ve dealt with during the day, and especially when it plays on repeat because you do the same scenes over and over again.”

Where that was concerned, this shoot had its own unique challenges. “My boyfriend (Lorne MacFadyen) was in the show with me. He was playing my husband,” she reveals. “We started it out like, this is great, everything is going amazing. And then there were scenes where we were fighting and arguing with each other. And we would go home, and it would be hard to be like, OK, that was the characters…” she laughs. “Letting go is something that I’m working on. And taking a lot more seriously now that I have come out of a character like this – realising that, oh yeah, you should listen to yourself.”

So does she have any tips? “I meditate,” she says. “I got big into meditation. Just taking moments of getting away from your phone. I suppose being selfish in a way; taking an hour where you just can kind of sit with your emotions, or even just in silence, and allow yourself to kind of reset in a way. Before, I used to do a lot of exercise, I used to go to the gym or go boxing, and that’s great and all, but if you’re doing a 14-16 hour day, that’s not possible. And I like journalling, writing everything down. It’s good to focus on the really good stuff that happened during the day, and hone in on that. Because I think that we can get fixated on the stuff that we feel we could have done better – that’s naturally where we kind of default to, we are our own best critic. But you can be your best friend as well. And journalling for me has now become a natural default at the end of a shooting day.”

Niamh has another surprising hobby that helps her to unwind. “I am obsessed with LEGO, that’s something people don’t know about me,” she

laughs. “I have been in the big LEGO store like the nerd that I am, waiting for new collections. I got a Mandalorian mask at Christmas. And there is a Harry Potter themed set that I have. I find it really relaxing. If I’m trying to learn lines, I’ll listen to the script on my earphones and be making LEGO at the same time. It is a great way of distracting yourself.”

Growing up outside Mullingar, Westmeath, in rural Ireland, Niamh dreamed of acting. “I think I wasn’t so much bored as a kid, but I found myself daydreaming,” she recalls. “Daydreaming in the sense where I would imagine that I was in another world, in another setting. And as a kid, I think TV and film for me was like a form of escapism. An escape from this quite lonely, rural setting. I remember seeing Titanic when I was about 10 and thinking, that’s what I want to do, I want to be an actor. I saw Kate Winslet on screen and thought: Wow, what an incredible job, imagine being able to go on all those adventures and journeys, and playing pretend for a living!”

In her small Irish community, nobody Niamh knew had done anything like this, and drama school was financially out of reach, but she refused to let that stand in her way. “After school, I studied design, but found myself in as many courses as possible in drama and performing arts,” she explains. “I always knew that it was something that I was going to end up doing, because I am quite stubborn in that sense. I’m glad that I didn’t listen to people around me. I pursued it – if it didn’t work out, I wouldn’t be letting anybody else down, because I hadn’t made any promises to

anyone. I had only made promises to myself. You won’t regret something if you don’t try it, and go for it.”

Describing how this perseverance paid off, she tells me, “I was part of this drama centre in Dublin called The Factory, and Barry Keoghan was there as well. It was like a group of actors who weren’t doing a full time acting course, but had been part of this Tuesday workshop. And eventually they did this full-time one year course. So, myself and Barry were part of that. And at the end of that I got cast in a feature film called Without Name in Ireland. That film ended up screening at Toronto Film Festival, and from there I got my agent. From Toronto it was then going to be screening in London, and I had gotten a grant from the Irish Film Board, from Culture Ireland, and I used the £500 for the flights to get from Toronto to London, and stayed long enough to meet my agent and do a few meetings. And off the back of that came my audition for The Virtues. So, that was basically the beginning of it.”

She has been living in London and working in the industry since then, and has not looked back. From thrillers to horrors, and blockbusters to indie films, hers has been a varied career, though she does seem to be drawn to demanding characters with dark sides. So, how does she decide which projects she would like to be involved with, I wonder. “It is always going to be the team that is going to be involved,” she explains. “And the story. The story, and the characters. If it is something that you read, and it hits a nerve, in a good way, you know you are on to something.

And I always like to pursue things, and challenge myself to do something that I haven’t done before.”

Speaking of which, if she could choose her next challenge, what would it be? “I would love to do some comedy; it would make a nice change!” She laughs. “That is what I watch when I go home. I watch as much comedy as possible. I love things like Fleabag, I think it was such incredibly smart writing. And then I love, you know, Daisy May Cooper in This Country. I watched that series on repeat like five or six times. I think comedy is something that’s quite overlooked, especially in the awards season. It’s always the gritty dramas that take the attention of film critics. But I think it’s much harder to try and make someone laugh than to make them cry. So, yeah, I’d love to explore comedy, and kind of more comedic characters.”

While she waits for that perfect comedic role to present itself, she is looking forward to starting work on a new job next month. “I will start filming a feature film with Charlotte Rampling in the summertime, it’s called Mooring,” she reveals. “I am very excited about that. We have been attempting to shoot it for a while, and neither of us have been available, and now we are finally both available at the same time, so we are just going for it and we will finally get around to shooting it. She is someone whose career I am just in awe of. I’m very grateful that I get to work with her because she’s a hero of mine.” It sounds like a dream.

Malpractice will be available to watch on ITV and ITVX later this month

SEE THE DIFFERENCE

All too often we take our eye health for granted, only visiting an optician when our current prescription leaves us struggling to read, or when we want to upgrade our frames. Yet our eyes can reveal a lot about our general health – even if they don’t feel any different – so it’s hard to overstate the importance of regular checks. And when it comes to that, with various locations across the Capital, in Belsize Park, Fleet Street, Spitalfields, Kensington, St. John’s Wood and on Lamb’s Conduit Street, The Eye Place is a name on which Londoners can count.

The independent opticians are owned by Alex Kemp, a third-generation Optometrist. Dedicated to providing a ‘different level of eye care’, Alex and his highly qualified team have spent the last two decades building an enviable reputation founded on using state-of-the-art techniques and cutting-edge equipment. The Eye Place uses Optomap technology as standard in every eye exam; the process allows the examination of up to 80 per cent of the retina (compared to the 20-25 per cent seen using more conventional techniques) in a comfortable, painless, and non-invasive process that takes a detailed image of the back of the eye.

Meanwhile, even more detailed examinations are available utilising Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), which uses light waves to take cross-sectional and 3D images of the retina, allowing each distinctive layer to be seen and enabling the Optometrist to map and measure their thickness. These measurements are crucial for the early detection, diagnosis, and management of eye-related diseases and conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, Glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.

Alongside offering one of the most advanced eye examinations money can buy, The Eye Place work with many suppliers, and choose lenses depending on the prescription, frame type and what the spectacles will be used for. You’ll find a spectacular selection of frames from some of the most popular and renowned brands, with something to suit every taste and price point.

A cut above

For a long time, it’s been standard to wash hair prior to cutting it wet, but the tide is turning, and increasingly stylists are choosing to cut hair dry, including Gustav Fouche, he explains why

We all know the drill at the hairdresser – after a quick consultation in the chair to find out what we’re after, we’re led to the backwash section for a thorough shampoo and condition in preparation for the cut. Some stylists might choose to give the hair a quick blitz with the drier before adding in layers and finishing off the cut, but most of the work will be done while the hair is wet. Where dry cuts have been offered, traditionally it has been in the interests of speed, not quality of cut.

It goes without saying that you wouldn’t expect to try on a ball gown soaking wet, so why would we think it’s normal to have our hair cut and styled for us wet, lying straighter and heavier than it will be once dry? The wet cut is popular because it condenses the hair, allowing stylists to cut precise lines. Brilliant for creating specific styles like a sharp bob, but not so great if you want to embrace the natural texture of your hair and enhance your face shape; freshly washed hair behaves differently, cutting it dry allows the stylist to assess its natural shape and observe how it sits.

South African hairdresser Gustav Fouche is one of only a handful of the Capital’s top stylists using this technique. “The 3D Dry Cut is a game changer. By cutting hair in its natural state we can see and feel how your hair falls, which is essential for the blending and layering that makes a cut truly bespoke to the individual client,” he tells me. “With a lighter, fresher feel, your hair moves more freely, and looks more effortless, no matter the style you’re wearing. When you can feel this fabulous every day, why settle for anything less?”

From his eponymous Notting Hill salon, he and his team of highly trained stylists offer a revolutionary signature 3D Dry Cut, skilfully tailoring tresses to suit the natural character and curvature of each individual’s face shape. “This method allows us to work with your hair as it naturally falls,” he explains. “Not only is this technique superior when it comes to the blending and layering of the hair, but it is more effective in creating a personalised style.”

“Dry cutting allows for the style to be personalised to your own unique features and hair type. Sculpted dry, you can see the shape evolving as the cut progresses,” he tells me. “When a cut is structurally well balanced, it is easy to manage and should fall back into place naturally. And best of all, because it is precisely refined, the cut should last for much longer.”

I’m keen to see what the dry cut can offer me, and Gustav is only too happy to demonstrate. He explains that sometimes he will wash and roughly blow dry the hair first, allowing him to assess it. In my case, he feels this isn’t necessary as it is already clear how my hair falls and moves around my face. We chat about what I want from my hairstyle, and how much time I have to dedicate to styling, and he sets to work.

It is fascinating watching the new style take shape. With a wet cut, the results are only obvious after blow drying, but this way, it is much easier to see how things are going to turn out. It removes the uncertainty that often goes with a haircut.

And I don’t miss out on any of the usual luxury salon experience – cut finished, I’m treated to the traditional wash, complete with heavenly head massage. The team here use GF Fabulosity, Gustav’s own range of products. Silicone-, sulphate-, paraben- and cruelty-free, vegan and produced sustainably right here in the UK, the five shampoos and conditioners, plus Hair & Scalp Recovery Elixir, have been designed to be mixed and matched to achieve the perfect protein and moisture balance whatever your hair type. They smell utterly divine and I can’t resist investing in a shampoo and conditioner to take home.

One sleek blow dry later and I leave the salon with perfectly tossable hair that I can’t resist peeping at in every shop window I pass. Better than that, alongside my new GF Fabulosity washing regime, my hair could not be easier to style back at home. Whether I let it dry naturally, or give it a quick blast with the dryer, it looks perfect every day. It goes without saying that I’m a convert to the dry cut.

A cut and finish with Gustav costs from £220. Gustav Fouche, 82 Westbourne Grove, W2 (020 7229 1818; gustavfouche.com)

I am hugely grateful to Vanessa. When we met three years ago, she found a broken woman; grieving, defeated, weak. I knew I wanted to gain inner strength and, beyond that, had no real agenda. Painstakingly, with endless professionalism, Vanessa worked with me week-byweek. I only understand now how the growing strength in my body was also fuelling strength in my mind

FROM STUCK TO UNSTOPPABLE

Whether you’re struggling to find the energy to exercise, recovering from injury, or taking the first steps in postnatal fitness, help is at hand from The Body Whisperer

Hampstead-based Vanessa Conway has been working in the fitness industry for 19 years, with qualifications in group fitness, personal training, and Pilates instruction.

From modern jazz dance lessons to martial arts practice, movement had always been a big part of her life while growing up, but then, in her second year of sports studies, she suffered a lumbar hernia coupled with double sciatica and was advised that a career in the fitness industry would be impossible. Devastated at the thought of not being able to follow her dreams, she turned to Mat Pilates to help improve her mobility and build back her strength. She tells us that studying the Method made her appreciate how complex the human anatomy is and to gain an understanding of how important it is to listen to what our bodies are telling us. She credits this approach of putting the body first with saving her career.

Becoming a mother was another turning point for Vanessa, who suffered from diastasis recti – or abdominal separation – following the birth of her two children. “Even with a good connection with your body, Mother Nature always has a surprise in store,” she laughs. “For me, it was constant pain in my hips and pubic bone. I had to find a way to move and support my body and my baby without overusing my abs or causing pain. It took time and gentle exercises to build a new body, a new balance.”

Her experiences led her to launch Feel.Move.Be – devoting her life to helping women to feel stronger and teaching them to move their bodies with confidence, whatever their circumstances. And from Nutritional Therapists to Mindfulness Coaches, Vanessa can recommend carefully selected experts to provide a full lifestyle programme for clients, helping them to reprogram their relationship with their body.

I met Vanessa following a long hospital admission after being diagnosed with a blood clot in my lung three years ago. I have seen four physiotherapists, and to me Vanessa has helped me more than anyone – in terms of overcoming both physical and mental challenges.

Depending on the client’s needs, services range from a 90-minute Fit your Body review with Vanessa, incorporating a full physical and mental assessment leading to the creation of a tailormade plan, to full programmes consisting of a series of one-to-one training sessions with Vanessa, nutritional advice, mindfulness coaching, and personalised fitness plans, plus ongoing support to ensure that goals are met. Depending on the client’s location, one-to-one session are carried out either virtually or face-to-face.

Vanessa’s newest service is the Rise & Shine membership, offering a female-only community in which clients can explore their relationship with their body. The membership includes live streamed classes and weekly online meetings with Vanessa Membership from £49 per month. For details, see feelmovebewithvanessa.com

I would strongly recommend Vanessa to anyone, especially to those who suffer from chronic pain or anything that needs some looking after in a responsible manner

Dedicated to producing sumptuous food, the team at Heath Street Kitchen have taken great care to source the very best ingredients, and everything is supplied by local firms

GLOBAL FLAVOUR, LOCALLY SOURCED

Former gallerist Alex Costa grew up around both art and hospitality – his mother is a fine artist and his father, Angelo Costa, opened legendary Hampstead hotspot Villa Bianca in 1969 and La Sorpresa in 1977. It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that he had always dreamed of opening his own restaurant. And last summer saw him do just that when he relaunched Aeon Gallery as Heath Street Kitchen. But though the gallery may be gone, artworks still adorn the walls of this contemporary, bright space, with regularly changing exhibitions of work by local artists planned. You’ll currently find vibrant, abstract works by Kimbal Bumstead hanging here.

Working with business partner Joe Sheasgreen, part owner of Wood Green’s Goodness Brewing Company, Alex has created an all-day eatery that brings a fresh eating experience to Hampstead. “We were always intending to open a restaurant in Hampstead,” he explains, “then we had the idea to marry our two businesses together – the art and the brewery, with the restaurant in it.”

From brunch through to dinner, the restaurant is open daily, with breakfast served on weekends, too. No matter what time you dine, the menu promises exciting dishes, made with the freshest ingredients. Starting the day in the best possible way, on the brunch menu you’ll find favourites like eggs benedict and shakshouka. Come evening time, dinner is a sharing affair, with platters and grazing dishes featuring on the tempting menu – think slow cooked beef short ribs with red wine jus reduction; salt and pepper squid; and Heath Street Kitchen’s famous millionaire’s potatoes with truffle oil and aioli (which have already earned a cult following among regulars). Meanwhile, on the drinks front, you can expect great coffee, classic cocktails, unique craft beer, and exceptional wines.

To truly serve Hampstead, a place close to Alex’s heart, Heath Street Kitchen is dedicated to using only truly local suppliers, such as Meat Naturally, Hampstead Seafoods, and Jenkins and Son. Alex tells us: “As a person of Hampstead, I like the idea of the restaurant being supplied by Hampstead businesses, run by Hampstead residents and featuring Hampstead based artists – it’s a very Hampstead thing.” If you haven’t yet tried it out, now’s the time to book your table.

Alex Webb on Park Lane

Pop-up becomes permanent for the 2020 Masterchef: The Professionals winner, with a new Mayfair home

The Intercontinental’s vast lobby is all marble expanses and extravagant chandeliers. In contrast, Alex Webb’s new permanent restaurant feels small and intimate with its low lighting, and deep blue and antiqued mirrored glass walls. We’re a little early for our 7.30 booking, so are invited to enjoy a drink at the bar first. In keeping with Alex’s desire to showcase British produce, the fizz on offer is from Hampshire-based Hattingley Valley; dry and elegant, it gives Champagne a good run for its money.

The Essex-born chef started pot washing aged just 14, before going on to train at the likes of Hélène Darroze at The Connaught, his moment in the spotlight came in 2020, when he was crowned winner of MasterChef: The Professionals, with judges praising his creative flair.

His new residency follows a popup on the terrace here last summer, and features a menu that champions British produce, incorporating international influences inspired by his travels and nostalgic flavours from his childhood. There’s a seven-course tasting menu, or a three course option, giving diners the opportunity to choose from a selection of dishes. We opt for the latter, with a matched wine flight.

Alex became known for his theatrical presentation when appearing on Masterchef: The Professionals, and his dishes here do not disappoint on that front

But first, a theatrical dish of canapés to tickle the taste buds. There are exquisite tempura oysters served in their shells in a pool of divine cider butter sauce, topped with caviar; tangy Black Bomber cheddar tarts piled high with parmesan; and exquisite branchshaped beetroot tuiles with goats’ cheese and beetroot puree.

Expectations have been set high and we are not disappointed. Alex’s winning Masterchef menu featured no meat, so it is perhaps unsurprising that our favourite dishes here are fish-based. A tuna ceviche starter comes served with avocado purée, crispy capers, citrus salad, and a dramatic squid ink cracker; it is fresh and delicious. Meanwhile, the Atlantic cod that follows it is tender and perfectly cooked, served with sea herbs, onion purée, deliciously sweet and tangy pickled onions, and Champagne sauce, and is topped with intriguing puffs of crispy potato skin that look like Rice Krispies.

The hero dessert is a tonka bean and yuzu mille-feuille, served with clotted cream ice cream, that is almost too beautiful to eat. Everything is utterly perfect, not least the friendly, knowledgeable service. We will be back.

Lily Vanilli’s Easter chocolate cake

A-list baker and London institution, Lily Vanilli has recently launched her first ever online academy – a subscription service offering detailed how-to guides, videos, piping-practise sheets and shopping lists to guide users through baking and decorating cakes in her inimitable style. Subscribers can tackle projects like this moreish cake that’s just perfect for an Easter party.

CAKE INGREDIENTS

250g light brown sugar 250ml neutral oil, like sunflower 110g cocoa powder 2 eggs 250ml whole milk 70g ground almonds 140g gluten free flour 2 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1/2 tsp salt 200ml brewed, cooled coffee (not espresso)

METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan/gas mark 6 and grease 2 x 8inch cake tins.

2. Make up coffee and leave to cool completely (alternatively, brew a double strength coffee and add cold water to cool it).

3. Mix the brown sugar and oil together in the bowl of a stand mixer on high for 3 mins, then on a low speed add the eggs and milk and beat to combine evenly (you could also do this by hand).

4. In a separate bowl, whisk together all your dry ingredients evenly.

5. Add them to your mix and beat until smooth.

6. Now add the cooled coffee and mix everything to combine evenly.

7. Divide equally between your two cake tins

8. Bake for 30-35 mins or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean.

BUTTERCREAM INGREDIENTS

150g egg white 200g caster sugar 400g unsalted butter (this must be soft but not melted – no need to chop or cube this, I just soften the whole block. If a small amount is melted, don’t worry, add it in! If a lot is melted, you messed up (sorry!) and need to redo it) 4 tbsp cocoa powder (you can leave this out for a plain buttercream, or add another flavour you like)

METHOD

1. In the bowl of your stand mixer, whisk together your caster sugar and egg whites evenly.

2. Place this over a pan of simmering water to dissolve the sugar. You don’t need to mix this constantly, but keep an eye on it – it will take around 5 mins and you want to give it a mix from

time to time. One thing that can go wrong in the making of Swiss meringue buttercream is overcooking your egg whites – avoid this by not letting the bowl get too hot, and by giving it the occasional stir.

3. It’s ready when the mixture is no longer grainy to the touch (rub some of the mixture between two fingers – if you can’t feel any crystals, it’s done! If you can feel even one little grain, it’s not ready –give it a bit longer).

4. Now transfer the bowl directly to your mixer, and with the whisk attachment whip it up on the highest speed until you have stiff peaks (you have stiff peaks when you can lift up your beater and get a nice peak that stays put, holding its shape).

5. Now add all of your softened butter (you can add this at once, no need to do it gradually), and beat again on high until it all comes together evenly and the butter is completely mixed in.

6. Add the cocoa (if using), then beat again on a low speed to mix it in – so it doesn’t fly everywhere – then on a high speed just until it’s all evenly mixed in.

7. Now turn your mixer down to low and let it whisk slowly until you have a smooth buttercream. This step helps knock out the air bubbles, so it’s smooth when you’re ready to ice. For a smooth finish on your cake, always complete this step just before using your buttercream. The ideal texture is slightly firm but silky smooth. If you leave it mixing too long it may get overly soft and runny, especially in summer, so keep an eye on it.

TO DECORATE

You can find more detailed instructions and guides to all the various techniques used on this cake in my online school classes:

1. Using a dab of buttercream, secure your first layer of cake in place in the centre of your plate or cake board. Then, using a palette knife or spoon, spread an even layer of icing over the top of the layer and sandwich with the second layer.

2. Now apply an even layer of icing to the outside of the cake to serve as a ‘crumb coat’, set this in the fridge until it’s firm to the touch.

3. Once set, apply another even layer of icing across the outside, using a palette knife and a cake scraper to create a smooth surface.

4. Decorate your cake as you wish – I used Lavolio Easter eggs and some piping techniques Suitable for all skill levels, including complete beginners, the new classes are perfect for anyone who wants to grow their confidence as a cake decorator and learn some really achievable decorating tricks and techniques to use again and again. THE CONSERVATORIUM

Part of The Set Collection, this iconic hotel is ideally positioned for the world class Museum District, located directly opposite the Stedelijk modern art museum. With its Art Nouveau details and soaring glass atrium, the building is a striking blend of 19th century architecture with 21st century design; the building was originally built in 1897 and has been used as both a bank and a music conservatorium, before being reimagined as a hotel by Italian architect and designer Piero Lissoni. Luxurious and laid-back, the 129 rooms and suites are contemporary and comfortable. And the food and drink offering makes the hotel a destination for more than just a good night’s sleep – Schilo van Coevorden’s Taiko Cuisine is one of the city’s hottest dining spots, blending Asian cuisine with local ingredients and flair. And the Akasha Spa with its Hammam and serene lap pool is a true oasis in the heart of Amsterdam’s bustle. conservatoriumhotel.com

ANANTARA GRAND HOTEL KRASNAPOLSKY

Locations don’t come much better than this – right in the heart of the city, overlooking Dam Square and facing the Royal Palace, it’s within walking distance of Amsterdam’s main attractions. The hotel was taken over by the Anantara group last year, and as part of the transition, underwent an extensive renovation, launching with new contemporary guest rooms and suites. Unique dining experiences include fine-dining restaurant The White Room, under the helm of former three-Michelin star chef Jacob Jan Boerma, whose refined, modern dishes use the freshest local ingredients from the Netherlands. In keeping with Anantara’s wellness philosophies, the new Anantara Spa blends a warm, local welcome with Thai techniques applied with premium products. We love the gorgeous relaxation area here, which overlooks the Summer Garden, a peaceful outdoor space tucked away within the hotel. anantara.com/en/grand-hotelkrasnapolsky-amsterdam

THE DYLAN

Amsterdam’s most stylish and intimate boutique hotel, this is one of the city’s best kept secrets. The five-star hotel is located in two landmark 17th century buildings on the Keizersgracht, one of Amsterdam’s most famous canals, perfectly placed for both the chic shopping district and some of the city’s best museums. Choose from 40 luxurious rooms and suites spread across the two buildings – though each has its own individual design, all feature a B&O sound system with Bluetooth connection, illy espresso maker and Aesop bath amenities. The Michelin starred restaurant Vinkeles is located in a historic bakery and offers an unforgettable fine dining experience. Alternatively, choose to take High Wine at OCCO Bar and Brasserie – a wonderful alternative to afternoon tea, you’ll be treated to a selection of four food and wine pairings selected by executive chef Jurgen van der Zalm and maîtresommelier Natasja Noorlander. The Chedi’s Asian-inspired architecture is both exotic and inviting

THE LAGOON LIFESTYLE

Blending five-star opulence with personable hospitality, The Chedi is the latest luxury hotel to open in El Gouna, Egypt’s exclusive Red Sea resort

It felt utterly indulgent, and a little bit naughty, to slip away to a dream escape right in the middle of house buying stress but, still reeling from the gut-punch of the mini budget, and the seemingly endless back and forth with solicitors, it was nothing short of medicine. While our property wasn’t quite ready to move into, nor was The Chedi, and so we were especially lucky to be a part of the dry run, the dress rehearsal, the friends and family preview… we’d practically have this high-end hideaway to ourselves – bliss.

Just four-and-a-half hours from London, and a 30-minute drive from Hurghada airport, El Gouna, for all its exclusivity, is surprisingly accessible. Quickly becoming one of the world’s most desired travel destinations, the oceanfront resort town is made up of 20 small islands surrounded by a network of glistening canals and lagoons; it boasts two tour-quality golf courses, over 100 shops and restaurants, as well as 18 luxury hotels, ours of course being the latest addition. Conceived just 33 years ago by Egyptian entrepreneur Samih Sawiris, this self-sufficient, vibrant, and multicultural hamlet is all about sustainable luxury, and it is almost inconceivable to think that it was once unforgiving desert.

An evening check-in allows us to see The Chedi’s beauty at dusk. Grand and calming in equal measure, we take in the Asian-inspired architecture over a refreshing glass of Sharbate-Albaloo, and both are deliciously exotic. There’s time to freshen up before dinner and explore our room, which is chic and modern, neutral in colour and rich in texture. Here, hightech luxuries such as the Sjostrand espresso machine are met with charmingly artisanal elements like the seagrass-fronted cabinetry, and it proves a heady mix. An enormous comfy bed – showcasing the finest Egyptian cotton – is, of course, the centrepiece of this sanctuary and it is perfectly positioned

behind the huge sliding doors of the balcony for us to enjoy the vista from this beachfront bedroom. But the views can wait until morning, our al fresco table is ready.

A common theme at The Chedi is to indulge unapologetically, whether you’re dining at the main restaurant, simply called The Restaurant, the Lobby Bar, the Beach House or the elegant rooftop Japanese eatery, Nihon. Yet, there’s never the sense that you’ve overindulged, thanks to the hotel’s thoughtfully devised menus of fresh produce and healthy but no less delectable choices. Breakfast, for example, includes an array of mouthwatering à la carte dishes, and our go-to becomes the Energy Protein: soft poached eggs, crushed avocado, toasted seeds and nuts with a mix of fresh coriander, rucola and spinach on crusty multi-grain bread – the perfect plate to set you up for the day.

We head to the nearby Abu Tig marina for a lagoon tour, which is the only way to see El Gouna in all its azure glory. The water here is impossibly blue as it sparkles in the sunlight and gently laps around the impressive moored yachts that dwarf our little boat. This may be a man-made community but the Red Sea water is absolutely real, as is the sunshine beating down on our faces, and we enjoy a moment of pure tranquillity. We disembark and make our way over to the architecturally striking Steigenberger Golf Tower with its 360 degree viewing platform. From here you can see it all: the desert, the sea, the coral reefs and, of course, the perfectly manicured golf course below. Breath-taking is an understatement.

Back at the hotel, there’s time to fully relax and unwind with a signature Chedi massage at the serene spa. The 90-minute treatment takes in Balinese, Shiatsu and Thai massage techniques, and we can practically feel the stress of the last few months evaporating from our pores. The hotel’s tag line invites us to “lean into the hush”, and it feels entirely apt here, and equally so as we spend long lazy afternoons soaking up the sun poolside or on the adjoining sandy beach. There’s more nautical action to be had as we take a private boat trip out to a quiet spot amongst the reefs with shoals of tiny silvery fish zig-zagging by, making it ideal for snorkelling. Any reservations regarding Great Whites are quickly quashed as we realise how clear, still and shallow the water is. Nevertheless, we press our captain for local intel: “Yes, there are sharks, but not like that. Just don’t hang a raw steak out of the boat,” he laughs.

In such a luxurious setting with everything you could possibly want at your fingertips, it is easy to forget your geography. For a complete change of scenery – and pace –we set out on a sunset desert hike with the passionate and knowledgeable El Gouna Mountain Goats. Forget plodding camel rides, this tour sees us hurtling through the Saharan landscape on the rooftop of a dusty jeep, and as we scream and

laugh and cling on for dear life, we take in our surroundings, awe-struck. It is nothing short of biblical. We’ve been on “hikes” before but this one lives up to its name, as tour guide and Mountain Goats founder, Sytze Boomsma takes us through the rugged terrain looking for signs of wildlife from gerbils to snakes, he has us climbing seemingly impossible rockfaces to reach the perfect spot for a life-affirming sunset, and as the golden sphere disappears into the horizon, we make our way back to the jeep for a well-earned meal of traditional Bedouin foodstuffs and coffee around the campfire. Sat there under the stars, it makes for a fitting end to an unforgettable experience, and you don’t have to be religious to feel the desert’s spiritual power.

Tired, but on a wellbeing high, we arrive back at the bedroom to find another origami towel animal crafted by the hands of Amin, who has kept our room immaculate and our evening turn-downs brilliantly creative – we’ve had swans, puppies, heart-shaped sculptures and floral displays… and it illustrates exactly what we’ve come to expect from The Chedi: the finest attention to detail with a welcoming personal touch. We spend our final evening in El Gouna feasting at a steak house on the marina and nipping in and out of the local shops looking for treasures to bring home. The following morning there’s enough time for a leisurely coffee on our private balcony, drinking in the sights of this brand new hotel; the lofty palm trees, the sandy beach with rows of empty sun loungers waiting to be filled by The Chedi’s first lucky guests. But for us, there’s a flight to catch – and new beginnings at home, too

Discovering Islington’s understated super-prime lifestyle.

Striking architecture, a handsome high street with independent cafes, shops and a family-friendly spirit, all within touching distance of the City, makes Islington a firm capital favourite. It attracts those working in tech, finance and the legal professions and has a large creative community with several well-known faces among its loyal fans. Here Chelsea Whelan and Michal Bocian from Knight Frank’s Islington office explain the area’s well-balanced appeal for super-prime clients and the benefits of leveraging Knight Frank as your partner in property.

Q: Outline Islington’s lifestyle appeal for super-prime clients.

Michal: Islington is centrally located and well connected yet has a true village atmosphere. Daily life centres on Upper Street, one of London’s most attractive high streets, and the small cafes and boutiques in Camden Passage. Kings Cross is around the corner, home to Meta and where Google’s new HQ is being built, or it’s an easy walk or cycle to the City and the tech hub around Old Street. There’s beautiful historic architecture, Georgian and Victorian homes around garden squares, good schooling, and plenty of culture on the doorstep. Additionally, the price points are interesting for super-prime clients. The highest rental price that we have recently achieved, was for a beautiful

four-bedroom period house let for £15,000 per month, in a quiet location close to Upper Street. The majority of superprime rentals in Islington are between £8,000 - £10,000 per month, substantially lower than other prime North London locations.

Q: Which locations and properties are in high demand with super-prime buyers?

Chelsea: Two streets with perennial appeal are Alwyne Road and Highbury Terrace. Alwyne Road is a prime location in the peaceful Canonbury conservation area, with 4,000 square feet early Victorian homes, one of which we recently sold for £5 million. Highbury Terrace has wonderfully large Georgian townhouses overlooking the green expanse of Highbury Fields. Islington also appeals to young, wealthy entrepreneurs and creatives. We recently sold an off-market home in St Paul’s Place to a young tech professional who preferred to remain a part of the community where he had grown up. We repeatedly see this loyalty and affection for Islington from our clients, who are passionate about staying in the area. Despite the notable price rises seen here since the pandemic, Islington’s comparative value, around £1,250 a square foot compared with c. £2,000 in Notting Hill for example, brings motivated buyers from elsewhere in London.

Q: How have super-prime clients’ demands changing?

Michal: The level of demand at the top of the market has increased significantly. We’re seeing more and more interest for larger homes post-pandemic and competition has increased. Homes renting for £8,000 - £9,000 per month attract substantial interest from professional couples

and corporate relocations. It’s a reflection of Islington’s diverse, well-balanced appeal. The community includes well-known actors and actresses, writers and senior fashion executives and we have completed viewings with reputable professional athletes. They all choose Islington for its discreet, low-key feel. This is one of London’s most on-trend, yet understated areas.

Q: What are the benefits of working with Knight Frank’s super-prime team?

Chelsea: Our broad knowledge of the London market means we are quick to spot trends and can provide clear, targeted advice to clients. We get invited to do market appraisals, by those who rely on our experience and acknowledge the quality of tenants and buyers we can introduce. Our connectivity and reach, both locally, nationally and internationally, is outstanding while through our dedicated super-prime team and Private Office, clients have a single point of contact into the entire Knight Frank network. Our expertise, extensive industry contacts and personable service ease the process while our connections within Islington, including handling many off market properties, helps our clients be first through the door.

FOUR TO THE FLOOR

For interiors inspiration this month look down as we uncover the latest flooring designs across wood, carpet, tiling and vinyl

TOUCH WOOD

There’s nothing like a real wood floor to bring homely warmth to your living space, kitchen, or bedroom, which is why this flooring choice proves perennially popular. As a natural product, whether you plump for solid or engineered wood, it offers a link to the great outdoors, bringing with it a sense of calm and a whole lot of character.

The flawsome trend is all about embracing imperfection, giving pre-loved pieces a new lease of life, and marrying the old with the new to create something fresh and dynamic. Woodpecker’s new oak and pine engineered Berkeley collection features hand-finished scorched boards with deep toasted nut and cocoa hues to give them the beautifully timeworn look of historic timber – but without any draughty gaps in the floorboards.

Smaller or narrow rooms naturally benefit from a lighter wood floor but if you have an expansive space, such as an open-plan kitchen/ diner, go blond and you’ll also reap the benefits of a light, bright surface underfoot. Luxury wood floor specialists Havwoods offer a range of products in light-maximising platinum shades, including the new Blanco 13, which is part of the brand’s Venture Plank collection.

CHIC WEAVES

Patterned carpets – and more specifically stripes – are enjoying a fresh look-in this spring/ summer. While a neatly lined weave naturally lends itself to a stair runner or rectangular rug, a wall-to-wall stripe can bring a chic, contemporary edge. And just as in fashion, striped floors have the ability to either widen or elongate, so choose your carpet direction carefully to make the most of your space, even if it is a simple trick of the eye.

Alternative Flooring’s new Wool Iconic Herringstripe collection marries the texture of a classic herringbone weave with a cool, contemporary stripe and features six ballerinainspired colourways including the blush pink Fonteyn and the soothing pistachio Behrs –perfect for a bare foot pas de bourrée.

Fibre Flooring celebrates finer stripes in nature-inspired hues with the brand’s Trinity collection, which lends a laid-back botanical vibe to bedrooms and livings spaces. In Varsity, the wool carpet blends fresh grass greens with mints and mauves and lilacs and creams to create an arresting visual texture underfoot. One for fans of biophilic design with an ever-expanding collection of house plants.

ON THE TILES

Outside of conventional bathroom and kitchen spaces, a beautifully tiled floor can bring unexpected elegance, whether that’s with intricate mosaics in the hallway or heavily patterned ceramics in the conservatory. Playing on our wistful desire for overseas travel, when it comes to tiling trends, this season many designers are looking to North Africa for inspiration.

Ca’ Pietra’s new Marlborough Terracotta Arabesque tiles offer an authentic take on traditional Moorish lantern styles with their ornate, curvy shapes and their rough and rustic texture. Put them together and you’ll discover a wealth of tonal variations in the material, which awards the floor its unique character.

For a more contemporary look, but one that stays true to the artisanal spirit of traditional Moroccan tiles, The Baked Tile Co. have teamed their Marrakesh Terracotta brick tiles with their Bejmat style mint gloss brick tiles in an arresting chevron pattern. Mixing the rustic terracotta with the glossy, glazed zellige tiles offers a pleasing contrast in both colour and texture.

VINYL REVIVAL

While it may still get a bad rap, luxury vinyl brands are here to tell you that the man-made flooring material has evolved. Increasingly, homeowners are taking advantage of this versatile floor covering as a means of experimenting with colour and pattern. As for functionality, vinyl tiles are soft and silent underfoot, as well as being reliably slip, water, scratch and stain resistant, making them ideal for bathrooms and kitchens.

Just launched, Belgian brand Moduleo’s new Roots collection reimagines its core vinyl range with classic styles for 2023. One of which is the terrazzo inspired Fiastra, which features an irregular pattern of playful speckles in warm earthy tones against a cream background. Think of sustainable flooring and vinyl doesn’t immediately spring to mind, but the Roots collection is made up of 50 per cent recycled materials, while it is entirely recyclable when it comes to the end of its (long) life.

Beija Flor is a brand that specialises in luxury vinyl rugs with a wealth of styles and patterns on offer, from realistic pelt-shaped cow hides to more traditional floral designs with a contemporary twist. It may look insta-worthy but a wool carpet in the kitchen is just not practical. Enter Beija Flor’s Sofi classic vinyl mat. With its geometric tile design, its brings a laidback Mediterranean charm, and is more than a match for inevitable spills and stains.

At home with

Alice Palmer

With a love for bold earthy shades and eye-catching prints, this lampshade designer has styled her family home with colour and pattern

Alice says she loves the freedom of being able to put her stamp on a property without any restrictions that might come with its architectural style, which is handy because before she put an offer in on her north London home, she assumed it was built in the 1930s. “It has that look from the front,” she tells me. But once inside she could see that it had the grand ceiling height of an earlier Edwardian property. While the high ceilings made an impression, Alice soon set about reconfiguring the floor plan to suit the needs of her growing family, and admits she was prepared to sacrifice some characterful period features for a more liveable space. Six years later and the three-bed property is now a spacious four-bed with a wonderfully open and inviting feel. “I gutted the whole thing when I bought it and redesigned all the windows at the back, so once you’re inside it gives a totally different feel,” she says. “I did a rear extension and loft conversion, making the loft the master suite with an en suite bathroom and small dressing room. On the ground floor I kept the sitting room at the front separate – I love being able to close this off when the children are watching TV or playing in there – and I opened up the back to become one big kitchen/living room, which leads out to the garden.”

Conversely, Alice’s home is nothing if not characterful, and the moment you step inside you realise this is the house of a creative – with colour, pattern and textural interest at every turn. “I love colour and pattern, the more the merrier in my opinion! I try to inject colour into all of my rooms, I tend to lean towards strong, earthy colours – I’ve kept the walls fairly neutral and added accents of colour through painting the woodwork,” she says. “I was more adventurous in the children’s rooms, painting flag motifs on the walls and stripes on the ceilings... Pattern, I tend to add more through layers of soft furnishings, with my lampshades and cushions, as well as fabrics I have picked up when travelling.” The property acts as the perfect showroom for the designer’s lampshade collection,

of which there are plenty of the playful, skirted pieces dotted around – the trio ceiling-hung in the kitchen make for a cheery, unexpected twist. Similarly pattern-rich soft furnishings are layered up to give the house its cosy, homely feel, with rugs and table cloths and scatter cushions in abundance, and in every room. But despite this, the house never feels cluttered and there’s a sense of serenity and calm throughout, even with all the colour and pattern. Of course, this is about finding the perfect balance, which evidently comes naturally to Alice. Here, brightly painted vintage pieces pop out against calming neutral walls, while houseplants big and small are flanked with bold stripes and vibrant hues to bring a pleasing contrast – you can always rely on Mother Nature to turn a room tranquil. I wonder if Alice has noticed an uplift in clients experimenting more with bold prints and colourful accessories. “I do think people are getting a lot bolder with colour,” she says, “I would say mainly thanks to Pinterest and Instagram. There are so many fab interior images now available, which give information on which paint colours they’ve used and so on, so I think people who are nervous about envisaging a colour are maybe a bit more daring than before… A good wallpaper is always such a nice touch in a room, I am planning on wallpapering my hall and the ceiling to match when our new wallpaper launches.”

The designer is about to embark on a trip to Delhi and Jaipur to finalise some new fabric designs, which she says is really exciting. In fact, travel features heavily in Alice’s life, both at work and at home, and her abode wouldn’t have its attractive, eclectic feel without her collection of interesting global finds, such as the huge green Hundi lamp, which hangs prominently above her rustic dining table. “I’m particularly fond of it,” she says. “Travel features massively in my décor. I’m hugely inspired by places I travel to and love the idea of bringing the colours and culture back

to my home so I can enjoy them daily.” And the objects brought back from far flung places work so well with Alice’s mix of vintage treasures, antique finds and contemporary luxe furniture pieces, too. “I like to mix and match my furniture,” she says. “Upcycling is great, so eBay, Vinterior and antique markets like Sunbury, Chiswick car boot, Ardingly, and Lots Road are always good for that. OKA is great for staple pieces, I also love the loose covered instant tables you can get from The Dormy House, which give a classic feel, but can be made contemporary with a pretty fabric.”

Visual art, too, has a big role in the house, bringing vibrant colour and interest to the walls, of which none are left bare. “My favourite piece of art is the portrait of my three children by the artist Leonie Gibbs,” Alice reveals. “She has got an amazing eye and paints expressive, colourful and fabulous oil paintings.” Given the designer’s magpie-like approach to collecting, I wonder if she had a clear vision for the house from the get-go, or as I suspect, the look grew more organically over time, and will never really be finished. She confirms: “I designed the shell of the house and then moved into a fairly blank canvas. As I lived in it, I slowly added layers bit by bit, painting a hallway or adding a cupboard here and there... There’s nothing I love more than being creative in my own home and there is a never-ending list of things I want to add!” alicepalmer.co

ON DESIGN: JO LITTLEFAIR

Jo is one half of award-winning luxury interior design studio Goddard Littlefair. Whether the pair and their team are working on a residential or hospitality project, clients can expect dream spaces with a holistic and narrative-driven approach

Belvedere Gardens Penthouse reception

HOW AND WHEN DID GODDARD LITTLEFAIR COME ABOUT? Martin (Goddard) and I had worked together previously and I knew he was completely different from other designers. I saw someone who truly believed in every line he put on paper, and his passion and conviction were utterly convincing. We discovered we both spoke the same design language and that kind of connection is a very powerful one. We are both drawn naturally to different materiality, styles and colours, but when you’re able to learn from one another and combine two concepts together, then the original idea blossoms into more than you’ve envisaged in the first instance. We celebrated the tenth anniversary of the studio just a few months ago and opened our Porto office in 2020.

HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR DESIGN ETHOS? Our ethos is about combining aesthetic perfectionism and boundless curiosity with a

team-playing, collaborative attitude. We aim to constantly evolve and create truly unique spaces that work within the context of each project. Whether it’s an ultra-contemporary new build or sensitive historical refurbishment, we are inspired by a building’s architecture, location and history. We create strong stories for our interior concepts, which users instinctively understand or enjoy discovering layer by layer.

WHAT CAN RESIDENTIAL CLIENTS EXPECT FROM A GODDARD LITTLEFAIR DESIGN?

Our residential clients can expect the same luxurious, layered and considered aesthetic that runs through the DNA of our hospitality projects. We will listen to the property, consider its context and heritage and then deep dive into our client’s needs, desires, ambitions and memories. Designing a home is a deeply personal experience and we are very aware of the fact that we are creating spaces for daily living. Our clients have children, pets, and complex needs for their home environment. Martin and I have a busy family dynamic ourselves, so we bring that personal experience to our designs. We understand the need to balance practicality when it comes to selecting materials and creating different zones – if we choose a beautiful silk, we are careful to place it in the right area so that clients can still enjoy those standout aesthetic details in their home.

HOW DO YOU WORK WITH CLIENTS TO ACHIEVE THEIR DREAM SPACE? Every client is different and as a designer you are often bridging a gap between family members, trying to understand everyone’s perspectives and finding the solutions that stay true to the spaces you are working in. It’s easier to have fewer decision makers than we often experience with hotel design, however if the home is deeply personal

the decisions can be harder. It’s crucial that we agree on the design narrative early. Once we’ve established that and have layered in the influences from the building’s provenance, the culture, the purpose of the space, and the needs of our client, then we have something that holds us all steady as we develop and create the design.

TELL ME ABOUT THE ROLE OF SUSTAINABILITY

AT GODDARD LITTLEFAIR Sustainability is at the forefront of Goddard Littlefair designs, with a focus on expertly selecting timeless, quality materials to achieve timeless designs that can be experienced for many years. Goddard Littlefair’s company culture encourages sustainability to be second nature in our designs, across the whole team. Our commitment to respecting the environment is not only something the team aspires to but it’s an approach we put into practice across all of our work. From concept to completion, the team adheres to the highest standards when it comes to sourcing eco-friendly materials and solutions that work for our clients. Our commitment to this is guided by the use of design principles that help reduce energy consumption, pollution and waste, with a focus on increasing the lifespan of materials.

CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE PROJECTS SO FAR? We are thrilled to see the Four Seasons Istanbul Sultanahmet open its doors to guests after the completion of our refurbishment. The project was such a special experience – and a first for the studio in the region. A former prison, the property has lived many lives and it was an honour to restore it for a new era. When asked this question we also sometimes overlook the formative projects from several years ago. Gleneagles was one of the first projects we worked on as a new studio, refurbishing suites and estate rooms. We were inspired by the feeling that the Highlands gives you, that inimitable emotional uplift, and it really solidified our narrative-driven design approach.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR GODDARD LITTLEFAIR?

We’ve recently moved offices into a converted warehouse in the heart of the City of London and so we’re hugely looking forward to seeing that refurbishment complete and watching our team flourish in the space. This year will see the highly anticipated Guerlain Spa and PILLAR Wellbeing at Raffles London at The OWO open, which Goddard Littlefair designed. One of the things I’m personally most passionate about is spa design, where every sensorial element is considered and curated. This project breaks new ground in luxury wellbeing and it’s a space where guests can feel truly cocooned away from the busy city above them.

EXCELLENCE IN ALL AREAS

What does excellence look like when selecting the best school for you child? Top rated at inspection, North Bridge House Senior Hampstead exceeds expectation in every facet of school life

Choosing a school for your child is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make – and in London, it can feel particularly overwhelming given the number of high achieving schools in our Capital city. Naturally, you will be looking for excellent academic outcomes and comparing the different facilities on offer, but when success is relative to the individual and the environment best suited to their persona, what makes for a truly excellent education? North Bridge House, an academically non-selective school for ages 2 to 18 with six prime north London locations, has earned a reputation for treating its pupils as individuals, helping every child to find their direction in life according to their personal strengths and interests.

Having just been top rated ‘Excellent’ in all areas by the ISI (Independent Schools Inspectorate),

North Bridge House Senior School in Hampstead adopts a ‘high support, low pressure’ approach, to help every student achieve more than they believe possible. With its focus on nurturing confidence and academic success, the school provides a wealth of opportunity for personal development across a broad and diverse curriculum, which promotes students’ wellbeing and mental health as much as it does good grades.

The inspection report also highlights North Bridge House Senior Hampstead’s excellent achievements in sport, music and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Scheme, as well as high levels of skill in the visual arts and outstanding grades in drama: ‘Pupils’ excellent oral communication is supported by the constant opportunities to make presentations, enter into discussions or perform.’

HIGH EXPECTATIONS BREED HIGH ACHIEVEMENTS

‘The high rates of progress evident for pupils of all abilities are facilitated by

the high expectations of staff who have an excellent knowledge of each pupil’s needs.’

In its aim to set children on their individual pathway to academic success, North Bridge House identifies students’ strengths and challenges them with further opportunity to excel in these areas.

“We build our pupils’ confidence in areas in which they are strong – positively impacting on their overall studies – and support them when they need more time to make progress,” says Executive Headteacher, Brendan Pavey.

“There is a difference in students being taught to the test in the expectation that they will get the highest grades – some children do not respond well to this kind of pressure – and setting

high expectations reinforced by meaningful support and the nurturing of intellectual curiosity,” Brendan concludes.

JOINED UP LEARNING

Vicky Harding, the new Head

Repton Prep

Ask Vicky Harding what prompted her and her husband to leave London and start a new life in Derbyshire as she takes up the coveted position as Head of Repton Prep and her face lights up: “The beautiful location, inspirational facilities, and the passionate ambition of Repton Prep places it as one of Britain’s top-flight prep schools – it’s a dream job!”

The role is indeed the ideal combination for any ambitious Head. Nestled in 55-acres of rolling Derbyshire countryside, the school fought off over a thousand independent preps to be crowned the best country prep in The Week’s ‘Best of the Best’ issue last year.

Vicky is the first to admit that her ‘to do’ list is quite long. “I’m working on a five-year strategic plan as well as longer-term 20-year vision for the school to ensure that we are fit to deliver the best formative-years education available to all of the pupils in our care. For me this means each child developing their individual place within the school community and an understanding of transferable skills, which is something I’m passionate about. Providing links for pupils between subjects so they don’t see maths, languages, science, humanities, the arts and sport in isolation, but have the ability and tools to join the dots between the skills that they are learning from lesson-to-lesson, and even during their after-school clubs and activities, is vital.”

Transferable skills are great if you’re putting a CV together, but what value can they bring to young children? Vicky smiles: “Encouraging children to be curious is the wonderful thing about being an educator. So, during a science lesson talking about how they feel physically when they play sport and then getting outside to re-enact that; taking algebra into the woods; or discovering that many children’s authors, such as Beatrix Potter and Arthur Ransome drew inspiration from the landscape by taking an English lesson next to our lake all make for a much richer educational experience.” This joined-up learning, says Vicky, keeps every subject purposeful and interesting to every child. “Learning comes alive and takes on greater relevance; the child who finds maths overwhelming can see the role it plays in practical subjects such as DT, music and sport. It instantly becomes more accessible.”

If it seems like a lot to pack into a school day then it is, but the army of highly qualified teaching assistants to support every teacher allows for a tailored approach to education: “Small class sizes means that we can respond to the needs of every child. The inspirational team of staff ensure that all pupils feel included; flexibility and differentiation are key elements of our educational provision. Challenge and support underpin our success so that each style or approach is available to ensure that the building blocks are in place so that subjects make sense. Individual learning journeys are carefully considered, and academic rigour is not just for those at the top of the school.”

This inclusive approach to education, says Vicky, encourages children to be in the driving seat of their own success: “Developing independence and resilience are such important skills as children progress through school, but they can only do this in a supportive environment. That means being supported by their teachers, absolutely, but also by their peers. Children need to be able to make mistakes and they can only do this where outstanding pastoral care and kindness are prioritised.”

What most excites Vicky about starting a new life in Derbyshire? “Well, my husband and I are currently in discussions about whether to bring a dog or a cat into the family – I’m opting for a dog! We love the outdoors and have already had some incredible weekends exploring the area, but this county has so much to offer – beautiful market towns, quirky independent shops, a fantastic food and drinks scene – the wish list of places still to visit is pretty long. What has struck me though is how welcoming and friendly everyone is, and I can’t wait to become part of Derbyshire’s warm community.”

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THE SCHOOL?

DLD has a contemporary and modern approach to education, which I hadn’t experienced before. It’s a complete breath of fresh air. As a boarding school, it’s so unlike the traditional, and so ahead of its time. Being in the centre of London also affords us so many learning opportunities that “London is our classroom”. The staff are supportive of our compelling vision, and the governors at the Alpha Plus Group are educationalists, so they understand schools, teaching and learning, and pastoral care.

HOW WOULD YOU SUM IT UP IN A SENTENCE?

“DLD College London is one of the most unique and exciting schools in Britain: urban, modern, forward-looking and undeniably cool.” (The Good Schools Guide, 2023.)

WHAT MAKES DLD DIFFERENT?

For nearly 100 years, DLD has been at the vanguard of education and a leading light in

Being in the centre of London affords pupils at DLD with many unique learning opportunities

wellbeing, boarding and academic innovation in the sector. The school has always been willing to do things differently to meet the needs of learners. The safe learning environment it’s created, underwritten by trust and respect, allows Generation Z and now Generation Alpha to acquire the 21st-century skills needed for the jobs of the future.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE ATMOSPHERE AT THE SCHOOL?

Friendly and relaxed, with a strong focus on pastoral care and wellbeing. If the staff and pupils feel happy and valued, the pupils are going to enjoy learning and perform well academically.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR PERSONAL EDUCATIONAL ETHOS?

The courage to think independently and respect individuality is at the heart of my educational ethos. Like DLD, I have a progressive and liberal approach, which is key to building an aspirational and creative community with a global outlook. Neil Postman, the American author and educator said, “Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see.” This, I believe, encapsulates my philosophy and the experience I want my students to have.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES WITH THE ACADEMIC SIDE?

Academic qualifications give students the keys to higher education, but we want to make sure they truly know how to thrive as confident, independent young people once they leave DLD. Our extensive programme of co-curricular afterschool activities includes music, art, drama, sport, debating, Model United Nations, Duke of Edinburgh, computer science, cooking and more.

HOW DO YOU LOOK AFTER THE WELLBEING OF YOUR PUPILS?

Our approach to wellbeing has won many awards and plaudits both nationally and internationally. It includes using Affective Social (AS) Tracking to help monitor the wellbeing of our pupils; a cutting-edge PSHE programme; trained mental health first aiders, and bespoke counselling. We even teach our pupils how to sleep! These tools, along with nutritious food, fully-equipped exercise facilities and our co-curricular programme, have created a culture of care and wellbeing.

WHAT’S THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNT ABOUT EDUCATING CHILDREN DURING A PANDEMIC?

Maintaining the wellbeing and mental health of our pupils and staff is the biggest lesson I’ve learnt. It’s an area that was overlooked pre-pandemic, but has now become just as important as safeguarding in schools. I’ve also learnt the importance of flexibility and adaptability in education – in other words, keep calm and carry on!

Discover why the establishment of a co-educational Nursery at St. Anthony’s School for Girls in September 2021 has been such a huge success

With the Nursery now well into its second academic year, families seeking a nurturing and kind learning environment founded upon the values of both the St. Anthony’s Boys’ and Girls’ schools, which is academically enriching at the same time, have been delighted with the experience to date.

The curriculum is informed by the EYFS (Early Years) programme and is designed to encourage curiosity, interaction, independence and most importantly, a love of learning.

The Nursery programme aims to help prepare children for reception. Teachers ensure children develop key skills as well as knowledge and an understanding of the world around them, with regular ‘learning in nature’ lessons at Golders Hill Park.

After their time at the Nursery, children will be stronger communicators and feel self-assured as learners, owing to the carefully planned timetable they follow during their time there. Drama, music, French, Mandarin, sport, and dance have been interwoven into the schedule allowing pupils to benefit from the rich specialist curriculum on offer across the school.

The Nursery children enjoy talk time and singing and celebration assemblies, feel inspired by ‘Whacky Wednesdays’ science focus, participate in all major school events, such as the Harvest Food Appeal, STEAM week, the Remembrance service, the Christmas show, the end of term disco, and pancake day celebrations.

The Nursery children have enjoyed very colourful and creative autumn and spring terms so far, finding treasure buried in the sandpit at Golders Hill Park, travelling to space in their own spaceship, welcoming their teddy bears to school on ‘Hug a Bear Day’, discovering the fossilised remains of a dinosaur in the sandpit, being taught arts and crafts by girls in Year 6, making bread and butter and bird feeders to coincide with RSPB Birdwatching Week and so much more. BE WELL TO TEACH WELL

In recent years, pupil wellbeing has become a measure of an independent school’s success – and not only among parents. As of September 2023, five categories of student wellbeing, including physical and mental health and emotional wellbeing, will make up the Independent Schools Inspectorate’s framework for inspections.

Naturally, teachers will need to understand this framework, as well as promote and protect pupil wellbeing. Yet evidence suggests that their own wellbeing is still flagging. In the 2022 TES Wellbeing Survey: International, 53 per cent of UK independent school staff said their workload wasn’t manageable, 49 per cent didn’t feel they had a good work-life balance and only 29 per cent would recommend their school as a place to work. And the 2022 NASUWT Teacher Wellbeing Survey found only small percentage differences in the levels of work-related stress, anxiousness and adverse impacts on mental health between the independent and state sectors.

Independent schools haven’t escaped strike action, either. In 2022, staff at the 23 schools that make up the Girls’ Day Schools Trust went on strike to defend their pensions. And this February, Winchester College only managed to avert strike action by awarding a 6.4 per cent pay rise for a typical teacher.

So, what’s going on with our teachers? “Things are slightly better than during the pandemic, though we’re comparing it with a time when people were shut at home,” says Laura McInerney, founder of Teacher Tapp, a daily survey app for teachers, seven per cent of whom are in the independent sector. “But our data shows an increase in the percentage of people saying they’re struggling to pay their bills or save, or paying a higher percentage of their salaries

on living costs. They also continue to struggle with the hours they work and have issues with autonomy in certain roles.”

Pay in the independent sector isn’t necessarily better, either, once you take into account teaching on a Saturday, running after-school classes or dealing with demanding parents. Then there’s the nature of the job itself, which Laura refers to as

The good news? Parents can contribute to improving teacher wellbeing. Laura has these tips:

1. Say thank you. Teachers are always telling us that a kind word from parents has made a big difference; in fact, it’s worth more than a gift. For example, someone said they’d spent 90 minutes with a parent and received a thank you card a few days later. It meant a lot to them.

2. Be as clear as possible in your communication. When I was at school, if I lost my coat, my mum would give me a note to say I’d lost it and she’d get me a new one. Now, it becomes a six-email chain with lots of questions. Keep your communications as clear and succinct as possible, and understand that teachers don’t have extra time for emails!

3. Advocate for teachers as well as for your child. Our data shows that while pay and workload issues still need to be resolved, having a supportive team is a protective characteristic.

So, if you’re at an open day, or browsing a prospectus, look out for what the school says about:

• how they build strong teaching teams

“emotional labour, without simple limits”. “We know that lots of teachers are spending up to 10-15 hours a week on marking,” she says. “But about half said they would mark the same amount if no one else was going to know. It shows they want to put at the forefront the things that matter to the kids.”

While this dedication is impressive, though, it’s no use if a teacher who exhibits it leaves to join another school. And a teacher who’s feeling stressed and overwhelmed is less likely to perform at their best than one who feels in control and supported.

• what opportunities they offer for flexible working, and

• what continuous professional development is available.

Factors like these can have a much bigger impact on day-to-day wellbeing than more gimmicky things like mindfulness classes. And the more teachers feel positive on a Sunday evening, the better the profession will be. teachertapp.co.uk

HIT A HOLE IN ONE WITH OCTAGON BESPOKE

Renowned for their success in creating homes tailored to each client’s requirements, Octagon Bespoke are experts at designing and building award-winning brand-new homes, as well as carrying out extensive restorations and renovations. Each project champions the Octagon hallmark – a high quality design and build and impeccable service, from concept right through to delivery.

A pioneer in the luxury housebuilding industry, Octagon is no stranger to delivering bespoke requests for its clients – from leisure suites with swimming pools, steam rooms and yoga studios, to extending basements with at-home cinemas and wine cellars.

Over recent months, Octagon Bespoke has seen an influx in requests for sporting equipment in the home, branching out from the more typical request of a health spa and suite, and focusing on honing athletic skills and undertaking hobbies within the home. Marking the latest advancement in the sporting world, more and more sports enthusiasts are searching for ways to incorporate their favourite ball games into their property –and the Octagon team have risen to the challenge.

Laurence Holder, Bespoke Director, comments: “Golf simulators and putting greens are becoming a regular request from our Bespoke clients. A home golf simulator allows you to practice and play a full round without ever leaving your house, and certainly not being limited by the unpredictable British weather. It also allows one to play a much quicker round, and when time is your biggest luxury, not having to wait for the group in front of you, nor being limited to the light hours means our clients can enjoy the great game 24/7 should they so desire.

For clients looking to incorporate their favourite sports into their new home, from putting greens to bowling alleys, Octagon Bespoke are champions when it comes to providing the ultimate fitness facilities

“Putting greens in the garden are also becoming an increasingly common request from clients who want to improve their short game –again, saving time over having to make a trip to the range.”

“Meanwhile, in a step up from games rooms and cinema rooms, in terms of size and technology, more clients have started to request we incorporate a bowling alley into the designs for their new home. No mean feat given a bowling lane on its own is typically 18 metres long – but of course something the Octagon team have delivered to our guaranteed high-quality.”

Octagon Bespoke clients Tim and Charlotte explain how the team have lived up to their impressive reputation for quality and innovative design and build, and fantastic customer service. Having previously lived in a luxury Octagon house on a prestigious private estate in south London, the couple instructed Octagon Bespoke to design and build their dream home, along with Octagon Interiors to assist with the interior design.

“The team were invaluable in helping us select and source the very best materials and products, as well as advise on some of the latest interior trends. You only get one chance to make a first impression when people enter your home, and Octagon have created a truly elegant and sophisticated home for us to enjoy.”

Octagon Bespoke is growing rapidly, supporting clients across southern England with restorations, extensive extensions and new build homes. With an inhouse team of architects, planners, surveyors and interior designers, Octagon Bespoke offers a turnkey service for clients looking to create a unique and tailor-made home.

MAKE AN IMPRESSION

when it comes to their property’s online profile. “You get one chance at making a first impression and if the marketing material for your home is not up to scratch, your property may be overlooked and ignored by buyers,” he warns. “You need to create some impact – we are in a world dominated by internet searches and social media marketing, both of which rely almost entirely on reactions to images in seconds. One tool that we find very effective in generating a response is ‘dusk’ shots, as these are eye catching and impactful.”

It’s said that the human brain takes just seven seconds to form a first impression, which is why good presentation is vital if you want to secure a quick sale. And as any estate agent worth their salt will tell you, those critical first judgements start before your potential buyer has even stepped foot inside your property. “Appearance both internally and externally is equally important,” advises Nibs Lakhani from Goldschmidt & Howland. “Make the front of your home look inviting, clear the pathway and consider repainting the front door if it’s looking tired. It’s also worth tidying up the hedges and clearing away anything unsightly, like the bins!” If your home boasts serious kerb appeal, then you’ve already got your buyer on side before your agent shows them through. Nibs has some tips to create a welcoming impression once indoors, too: “Place a doormat to greet your buyers, add some flowers and a large mirror to create a space that’s bright and homely, and declutter – a bright, clutter-free hall will give buyers a positive feeling and a great lasting impression. We would also encourage clients to carry out minor repairs and have the property professionally cleaned, especially the kitchen and bathrooms.”

Nathaniel Wilde at Hamptons agrees that when it comes to engaging buyers, good presentation is essential. “First impressions are crucial,” he says. To get your property ready to put on the market, it’s a good idea to listen to advice from an agent

as to how to present it in the best light and achieve the maximum price. Honesty is key, and it’s really important not to go overboard. As a rule of thumb, it’s always a good idea to declutter, and in some instances, properties can benefit from repainting, possibly in a neutral colour, but a complete renovation isn’t necessary. I’m a big believer in advising sellers to not spend too much money before selling.”

Whether it’s a hangover from the pandemic, or simply the natural direction property marketing is going in, technology has a huge role to play in buying and selling houses. Nathaniel tells us that video tours have become more commonplace in recent years, “especially for larger houses where we will often do a 3D video tour,” he says. “During the pandemic we sold properties to overseas buyers who couldn’t get to the UK to view the property. A 3D video tour enabled prospective buyers to feel like they were on a real viewing, walking through the property from room to room, getting a sense of the space and how the rooms flowed.”

“Physical viewings are actually second viewings,” says Nibs, “as most buyers will have already carried out their research online and, armed with that information, they’ve decided it’s worth a visit.”

Arlington Residential’s Marc Schneiderman agrees that today’s sellers need to be particularly savvy

The team at Octagon Interiors know a thing or two about presentation – they are experts at designing aspirational spaces for potential buyers. Rachel Hall, head of interiors, says that “for many of our buyers and clients, seeing really is believing, so furnishing a show home demonstrates the potential of the space, and giving buyers the chance to envisage themselves living in the home is key. From the placement of furniture to the finishing touches on the walls, a styled show home brings the floorplans to life, allowing clients to visualise the possibilities of their home’s interiors.” Striking the right balance between a wonderfully homely property, and one that simply has too much of the current owner’s stamp on it is no mean feat. It can be difficult for a potential buyer to see your property as their home, especially if you’re a keen collector who’s into maximalist furnishings. There needs to be light and space. On the other hand, an empty property can be equally off-putting, which is why Marc suggests that here, staging could be a good option. “We recommend to clients of empty properties that they have their property professionally furnished,” he says. “Staging a flat or house which is empty can be invaluable in capturing the interest of a less imaginative buyer.” Alternatively, there’s always technology to bring your empty house to life. “One way around the problem of an unfurnished property is to ask your agent if they can get their photography department to create a CGI of a furnished flat,” suggests Nathaniel. “We’re able to offer that service and the quality is quite incredible – you can barely tell that parts of the image are computer generated. And even though the furniture isn’t there in real life, it can really help bring the space to life and enable buyers to see what it would be like to live there.”

With eagle-eyed property seekers looking at the finer details, Rachel suggests that adding a few luxury touches can make all the difference. “To create a real wow-factor we like to add in a few statement furnishings or focal points to each room to ensure a truly impressive experience,” she says. “These could be a brightly coloured artwork, a textured rug, or even a specific scent for the home, ensuring we hit all the senses. Not only do we want our show home to be unforgettable, but we also want clients to come away feeling inspired.”

PRACTICALLY PALATIAL

Live out your Jane Austen dreams in this glorious Regency terrace

The stuff of property dreams – and then some, this magnificent Grade II listed residence forms part of the John Nash designed Hanover Terrace, it sits stately opposite Regent’s Park and within leisurely walking distance of urban villages Marylebone and St. John’s Wood. Also on the doorstep is the iconic London Zoo, and the magical Open Air Theatre. While its location is enviable enough, the ambassadorial property boasts five storeys of luxurious living accommodation, as well as a mews house. With multiple reception rooms over the lower ground, ground, and first floors, and with an impressive seven bedrooms and six bathrooms on offer, there’s more than enough space to spread out in style – a rare commodity in central London.

Dating back to 1822, and with a rich history of past residents, the property offers a wealth of period features that have been lovingly looked after: think ornate cornicing, grand marble fireplaces, and of course, those requisite floor-to-ceiling windows so associated with a Regency property of this calibre. But this is no stuffy historic house, frozen in time. Far from it, in fact. Complementing the original features is a mix of modern glamour in the décor and contemporary luxuries in the amenities. On the lower ground floor, you’ll find a plush media room complete with a nifty home cinema set-up, and a state-of-the-art gym with adjoining sauna room, while the kitchens and bathrooms are suitably sleek and chic for modern family living.

Outside space comes in the form of a beautifully manicured 66 ft brick walled garden that’s ideal for entertaining yet compact enough for easy maintenance – and who would need anything bigger with the rolling Regent’s Park right there? We highly recommend the views from the first floor terrace –and a speedy viewing, this one won’t stick around for long. £22.5 million, Beauchamp Estates (020 7722 9793; beauchamp.com)

From Marylebone in 1822...

In 1822, our journey began in Marylebone with Thomas Charles Druce - a draper, upholsterer, and aspiring entrepreneur. Thomas’ love for London homes coupled with his genuine interest in his client’s needs has remained at the core of what Druce does for over 200 years.

Initially, the company was founded in London’s Marylebone district as a furniture and antiques dealership. Off the back of its success in the 19th century Druce grew into a department store and then underwent a transformation to an estate agency, leading the way to where we are today.

To 2023...

Our past has shaped our longstanding presence in Marylebone. Today, we are stronger than ever, placing us in the top two listing agencies for properties over 5 million GBP in the area so far this year.*

Mitchell Murphy, our Head of Sales in Marylebone

“It’s such a pleasure to be in Marylebone, where there’s an undeniable energy in the air and the quaint characteristics retain their timeless appeal. The latest statistics only confirm this excitement, as the area saw a 10.1% annual change in achieved prices and a staggering 35.6% increase in annual transactions during the last quarter of 2022. Although the number of available properties has decreased from last year, the increase in buyer registrations is incredibly promising. This heightened interest is leading to more viewings and, as a result, has recently resulted in two sales agreed through sealed bids”

Asking Price: £5,750,000

Recently, the Druce Marylebone Team accomplished the sale of a truly exceptional mews tucked away between the vibrant Marylebone High Street and the serene Regent’s Park.

And now Across Prime Central London

Druce strategically joined forces last year with another property household name acquiring Bective Leslie Marsh, founded in 1881. This extends the legacy of our long-established local agencies and an embedded network of experts to six strategically complementary locations in Prime Central London: Marylebone, Kensington, Chelsea, Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove and Brook Green. Just as Druce has flourished since 1822, our love of Prime Central London property has been the springboard to expanding our network of new offices to Dubai and Singapore.

IN SAFE HANDS

John Ennis, CEO of Chestertons tells us about his vision for the company, and his predictions for the London property market going forward

WHEN DID YOU START AT CHESTERTONS AND WHAT DREW YOU TO THE COMPANY?

I started my role as Chestertons’ CEO at the beginning of November 2022. Having worked nearly a quarter of a century in the industry, I’ve always known Chestertons to be a very strong, recognisable brand that’s steeped in history, but over the past few years, I’ve watched it grow rapidly in both size and reputation and really wanted to be a part of its future. It now has one of the largest networks of offices in London, numerous branches across the world, one of the strongest lettings divisions in the industry, a fantastic research department analysing every movement of the market, and some very clever technology behind it.

WHERE WERE YOU BEFORE?

I was at Foxtons for 23 years, working my way up to managing director of Central London, looking after 16 sales and lettings offices, as well as the new homes division of 11 offices.

WHAT’S YOUR VISION FOR CHESTERTONS?

The buying, selling and renting process is incredibly – and arguably increasingly – complex and my vision is to find new ways of making it simpler, quicker and more enjoyable for our clients. This involves studying how consumer habits have changed, exploring new technology, and introducing new client-focused processes. I’m also keen to start another exciting chapter of growth and expansion for Chestertons. This will mean that people will start seeing Chestertons appearing in new places, both here in London, and also across the world. I’m also pleased to share with you that we have recently signed a partnership agreement with Forbes Global Properties – a platform that now allows Chestertons to leverage Forbes’ global reach and enormous audience. This undoubtedly provides real benefits to Chestertons’ clients as it enables us to get our clients’ properties the right exposure and deliver them the best results. Equally important, however, remains Chestertons’ efforts to support the local communities by driving charitable activities such as our annual Coat Drive with charity London Calling. Last year, our branches’ outreach resulted in over 6,000 coat donations, which were then distributed to help vulnerable Londoners through the winter months.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT THE LONDON PROPERTY MARKET?

There are always ups and downs in the market and so short-term speculation is risky, but I am of the firm belief that London property will remain an excellent medium and long-term investment. There is widespread speculation about prices falling dramatically this year, but Chestertons’ research department has analysed

a lot of economic and market data and we believe that prices will only dip slightly this year before a strong rebound in 2024. Much of our confidence in the market rests on the fact that there are simply not enough properties to meet the amount of demand from people who want to live in London; one of the most vibrant and wonderful cities in the world.

WHAT ARE THE LONDON HOT-SPOTS TO KEEP AN EYE ON?

One of the exciting aspects of the London property market is that new hotspots are constantly emerging all across the Capital. Especially over the past few years, London has seen new and fantastic communities being created with the regeneration of King’s Cross, Wembley Park, and Battersea Power Station. With the Elizabeth Line in place, I think there will be further potential for improvement in the west and east of the city, such as Southall and Romford. In the meantime, the already well-established areas of the Capital will continue to draw in buyers and renters for different reasons. Whilst leafy neighbourhoods such as Richmond in the south west and Muswell Hill in the north remain popular with families, young professionals are increasingly being drawn to the more affordable east, to areas like Stratford, Leytonstone and Mile End. chestertons.co.uk
