CONTENTS

August 2021

The definitive guide to London living Editor’s letter Liz Skone James Rules, restrictions and guidelines might be changing faster than you can keep up with, but you can always rely on your monthly copy of Fabric to bring you the very best of life north of the river in London. This month is no exception – amongst other things, we give you the low-down on the most talked about exhibitions and performances; a review of a hot new Indian eatery in Fitzrovia; a sneak peek at a fabulous new fashion label from a creative and entrepreneurial pair of locals; and the insider view on living and working in magnificent Mayfair. Our cover stars the beautiful and oh-so talented actor and model Ella-Rae Smith, who tells us about her latest role in independent film Sweetheart, and explains why coming home to London always makes her feel emotional. On the interiors front, our focus this month is on art and its place at the heart of the home. Discover tips on creating and curating your own collection, and explore the home of an artist duo who know exactly how to show off their favourite pieces to perfection. Meanwhile, if you’re still feeling uncertain about foreign travel, read our review of a wonderful weekend escape in Wiltshire, and discover how one luxury tour operator is taking the stress out of holiday planning. We’ll see you again in September.

fix WORDS by ALI HOWARD

THEATRE

2:22 A Ghost Story

3 August-16 October, Noël Coward Theatre Popstar Lily Allen has seen a number of transformations, but this is perhaps her most remarkable. Making her stage debut, Allen takes on the role of Jenny in a new play by Danny Robins. Hailed as a unique mix of horror and social commentary, 2:22 A Ghost Story is directed by Matthew Dunster and also stars Hadley Fraser (City of Angels), Julia Chan (Katy Keene) and Jake Wood (EastEnders). Jenny is convinced that her new home is haunted but husband Sam won’t hear of it. The couple argue with their dinner guests, old friend Lauren and her new partner Ben. Can the dead really walk again? Something certainly feels strange, and it’s getting closer, so the four decide to stay up… Allen says: “Danny’s play is everything I love; wit, a meditation on marriage and relationships and family all hinging on a frightening plot.” Book now, if you dare. 85-88 St. Martin’s Lane, WC2N (0844 482 5151; 222aghoststory.com)

Barry Cawston: Dreamstates Until 15 October, Observatory Gallery

In this unique retrospective of the fine art photographer’s extraordinary snaps, Cawston takes us on a surreal road trip across countries and continents, further stirring our wanderlust as we embark on a dream-like journey. His colour-rich and often sun-drenched pictures are cinematic in feel and the landscapes breath-taking, but there’s an eerie quality to them, too. We’re drawn in by Cawston’s deft composition and find ourselves in “the alone of dreams that is never quite fully alone.” Whether we’re voyeur or ourselves being followed is unclear, and that’s wonderfully unsettling. A must see. Prints can be purchased through the website or by contacting the gallery directly on enquiries@theobservatory.org. 64 Marchmont Street, WC1N (020 7813 9877; theobservatory.org)

CULTURE MAGIC

Wonderville

Until 30 August, Palace Theatre Being part of a live audience again is magical in and of itself. This month, we’re promised illusion and technological trickery alongside the awe-inspiring magic as leading conjurors join forces to bring us a dazzling performance that’s definitely not just for kids. The line-up includes mind-reader extraordinaire Chris Cox; Britain’s Got Talent breakout star Josephine Lee; Young and Strange – the duo hailed by magic legends Penn & Teller as “one of the greatest magic acts in the world”; and three times Magic Circle champion Edward Hilsum. The show’s rotating line-up of guest stars includes Magic Singh, whose 2 million social media followers will be familiar with his wonderfully unique style of magic and mindreading; and circus performer Emily England, who is, excitingly, swapping Vegas’ Caesars Palace for a few nights in the West End. Expect to be charmed. Shaftesbury Avenue, W1D (wondervilleuk.com)

THEATRE

The Browning Version

Until 29 August, Riverside Studios The Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company’s production of Terence Rattigan’s classic play features a cast made up entirely of RADA grads – including Branagh himself, who both directs and takes on the role of despised teacher Andrew Crocker-Harris – or “Crock”, as his students have nicknamed him. A late summer’s day at an English school brings the end of term – and the end of intrigues, deceptions and lies in the lives of its inhabitants. “Rattigan demands detailed, truthful performance,” says Branagh. “RADA works hard to train actors for that. It will be exciting to see the two combine.” Profits will be donated to the illustrious drama school whose ability to deliver world-class training suffered a huge blow during Covid. This production marks the launch of Stage Critical, RADA’s vital fundraising campaign.

Melissa McGill: In Venice

101 Queen Caroline Street, W6 (020 8237 1010; riversidestudios.co.uk)

Until 18 September, Mazzoleni

In her first solo show at this Mayfair art space McGill presents works in a range of media related to her acclaimed 2019 project Red Regatta – an unprecedented series of four large-scale performances in Venice’s dream-like waterways that saw 52 traditional vela al terzo boats sail in choreographed regattas, each with sails hand-painted in red. The exhibition includes works with sailcloth and paper, hand-painted photographic renderings, an installation in glass, and a new series of watercolour studies of the Venetian Lagoon. “Red Regatta and its related artworks speak simultaneously of the individual, intimate, local and handmade,” McGill says. “While also emphasising the collective, large-scale public and global community. Bringing individuals together on both intimate and collective scales, uniting for a common goal – this is the core of my work.” 27 Albemarle Street, W1S (020 7495 8805; mazzoleniart.com)

INTERVIEW

Actor Ella-Rae Smith’s parallel modelling career might have made her comfortable in front of the camera, but it hasn’t yet afforded her a magazine cover. “I’m so excited. It was so much fun! I am really, really, looking forward to seeing the photos…” she tells me, when we speak about the shoot at the interview a week later. “It’s my first cover. Ever! I am over the moon!” If you watched last year’s Netflix thriller The Stranger, the chances are you’ll recognise Ella-Rae. She played Daisy, the girlfriend of Thomas, whose mother Corrine disappears in the first episode. The rising star has also made notable appearances as Nix in AMC’s Into The Badlands and Phoebe Parker-Fox in BBC’s Clique. Next up is independent film, Sweetheart, which is due to be released in cinemas next month. Directed by Marley Morrison, it tells the story of a socially awkward, environmentally conscious teenager named AJ (a first lead role for Nell Barlow, another up-and-coming young actor), who is dragged to a coastal holiday park by her painfully ‘normal’ family. Over the course of her stay she becomes unexpectedly captivated by a lifeguard named Isla, played by Ella-Rae. “I think the first time I read the script it connected with me because it is just a classic teenage love story, that just happens to be between two young women,” she tells me. “So many queer stories are about coming out, but what happens after you come out? What is that next step? I think that is really important – normalising these stories. It is not about the novelty of being gay, it is about the reality. I wish I had had a film like Sweetheart when I was growing up.” Ella-Rae has fond memories of filming, which took place over the course of a few weeks on location at Freshwater Beach Holiday Park on Dorset’s Jurassic coast. “We all basically lived there for the whole shoot,” she recalls. “It really was our playground. That’s quite fun as an actor, because you are living where your character lives, so you are just lost in that world. We had no phone signal, I didn’t have a car, so I was kind of just completely stranded there for three weeks… but it was so much fun. I made one of my best friends on set; we got matching Sweetheart tattoos. We all became like a family of filmmakers. It was very friendly; a small and gentle set.”

It was such a special experience, in fact, that she tells me it is probably, her favourite project to date. “Working on independent films is amazing, because you have such a small crew, such a small cast – it feels a lot more collaborative, and everybody gets stuck in. You don’t have as much money – people are working out of passion and love. Sounds really cheesy, but I think that is one of the main reasons that Sweetheart is so important to me,” she explains. “But also, knowing how important this film is to so many people – it is an incredibly important film for me, and I wish that it had existed when I was a teenager. So, being able to give that to other teenagers. That’s why I do what I do, so that we can share these stories which are important and have a message, and make people feel seen and heard and understood in ways they haven’t been before.” Ella-Rae first felt this desire to tell stories when she took her first steps on stage aged 12. “My primary school did Shakespeare plays as our leaving school show, and I was cast as Olivia in Twelfth Night,” she recalls. “I had never acted before. I didn’t really know what I was doing, but I just found myself doing the right thing. Responding to the other characters and getting really into it. And a teacher pointed it out, and I realised, oh, I have no idea what I am doing, but I am doing it right. Okay, let’s explore this.” She describes wanting to learn more about the craft and taking weekend and holiday jobs in order to earn money to pay for courses. It was being scouted by a modelling agency that gave her the opening to pursue her dream further. “I signed with my first modelling agency when I was 16, which completely changed my life, I met some of my closest friends and it was my first time being plunged into London,” she says. “And then I kind of got really lucky, I was looking to create opportunities for myself and it all kind of happened at the same point – so I did my first film, signed with my agent and then did a modelling job that paid me enough to leave home, and off I went – jumped into the working world.” Ella-Rae still models – now represented by Next Management she has recently featured in campaigns for Hugo Boss and Rimmel. “When I first came to London, modelling is how I financially supported myself – so I could afford to not get any acting jobs,” she explains, when I ask how the two careers work together. “I have always done both. I love fashion and dressing up and being glamorous. Acting is not glamorous, but I like it because of that. People think it is way more glamorous than it is, but in reality, I have got muck under my nails every day, and I have to wake up at stupid o’clock. Modelling feels much more glamorous – dressing up in pretty dresses is always fun. I like having the balance: glamour and sparkles and then muck and being wild!”

If she was forced to choose, she admits that acting would win. “I think acting is where my soul is,” she tells me. “Modelling is fun, but my soul is not in it. If that makes sense. I feel like modelling is the preparation step for acting, but you cannot fully commit and dive off into the character, do you know what I mean? And I like to jump off into the character and not have to care about looking nice. To be sort of wild and malleable.” As much as she loves the work, there is one part of the job which was difficult to master – the art of auditioning. “One of the biggest parts of being an actor is rejection. And you have to learn that it is not personal; it is not about you. It’s often about a bigger picture. You are a small piece of a bigger puzzle. Sometimes, you might not be the right piece, and that is okay, ultimately it is not to do with your talent. It is not a reflection on you as a person, it is just how it is,” she reasons. There have, of course, been audition experiences that she would prefer to forget. “I remember I once got told by a casting director that they couldn’t cast me for a part because it would be too hard to cast me a family – which is very uncomfortable,” she admits. “I think you have to be resilient to be an actor, you have to be able to walk into a room and put up a wall when you come out. But when it crosses over from professional to personal… that is not appropriate for anybody to say something like that. I like to think that the industry is changing though. It is changing a lot. It is becoming a lot more diverse. I don’t feel too worried about it, you know?” The events of the past 18 months have meant other worries, though. There has been very little going on work-wise for Ella-Rae, though she insists that there are silver linings to this. “I have been at home, which has been nice. 2019 was really busy for me, which was amazing, but I hadn’t really stopped. My feet hadn’t touched the floor. And I hadn’t been at home for more than a month at a time,” she explains. “So, being in my own house for a whole year has been weird, but really nice. Being in one place, I notice the seasons now: you watch the flowers bloom, and then you watch them die. You watch spring turn to summer, and summer turn to winter, and it makes me feel a lot more connected to where I am. And I have normal things now, like I go on a dog walk, and I see the neighbours and we say hello, and I know people in my neighbourhood. I am a bit more grounded now. It’s been hard, but it has been grounding.” These aren’t the only seasons she has been watching: “I have binged on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” she admits, smiling guiltily. “You can box set straight from season one, and I did that during

That’s why I do what I do, so that we can share these stories which are important and have a message, and make people feel seen and heard and understood in ways they haven’t before

lockdown. I think there are 11 seasons, I don’t know how many hours of these women arguing I have watched, but I am invested. I wish I had a classier box set binge. But a binge is meant to be fun and comforting, right? I’m at the point now where episodes are coming out live. It is hard going back to the old-fashioned ways! I am feeling the pain of having to wait for a week. But I do quite like it, because it gives me something to look forward to,” she laughs. Of course, she has more to look forward to than catching up with the next instalment of the lavish lifestyles of the Beverly Hills set. “Obviously, Sweetheart is coming out in the cinema. And I just worked on a short film called Blood Rites that is based on a short story by Daisy Johnson,” she reveals. “It was so much fun. It was directed by Helena Coan, who just did a documentary called Audrey, about Audrey Hepburn, which I really, really encourage everyone to watch. And then there are a couple of things which are question marks and maybes, which I cannot talk about, but which I am very excited about!” There were, of course, mixed feelings about going back to work. “I was so nervous beforehand – I was thinking, will I know what to do, will it all come back to me,” she reveals. “But it is like riding a bike, you don’t forget, you just slip back into work mode and hang out with people and have funny conversations and make art. I just really love being on set. I am a big geek. I love going to work.” As much as she loves working again, Ella-Rae is longing for a proper holiday, though. “I have missed travelling so much,” she confesses. “I used to hop around the globe like it was nobody’s business. I was always at the airport.” So, where’s next on her bucket list when restrictions allow? “I would love to go to Tokyo; I have never been anywhere like it. My partner and I are kind of half joking, half seriously thinking about going to Tokyo Disneyland. Well, why not? It’s meant to be a crazy Disneyland. Obviously, there is loads more to see in Japan, but when we go, that will be on the list. I would also love to go somewhere gorgeous like Bali. Or Sri Lanka. I think I want to go somewhere otherworldly. Or that feels otherworldly in comparison to London.” Which is not to say that there is anything wrong with London, she assures me. “I love London, I do,” she exclaims. “My favourite thing is that there is a place for everyone. A very different, secret spot. It doesn’t matter who you are, or where you are from, you will find your place here. I’ve had so many times when I have been flying over London, and I look out and I see the Thames and I cry because I am so excited to come home. Ever since I was little, to me, it has been this big sparkly, shiny place. I think that’s because I am not a born and bred Londoner. I didn’t grow up here, so it has still got that sparkly mystique to it. It is a special place.” I couldn’t agree more. Sweetheart will be released in cinemas on 24 September

REVIEW

Feet for Life For me, one of the positive things to have come out of lockdown is a new-found love of running. Thanks to Couch to 5K I can now shuffle around my local park without requiring medical assistance. Unfortunately, my feet, unaccustomed to such abuse, are suffering. A mysterious and particularly livid bruise has appeared on the top of one foot, and it simply refuses to get better. Convinced I have bunions, I head to Feet for Life on Wimpole Street in search of professional advice. There I meet Junaid Ahmed, a podiatrist with over 20 years’ experience. He immediately sets my mind at rest, reassuring me that my bunion-related fears are unfounded. The bruise is merely a symptom of trainers that are half a size too small (now I feel a bit silly). A medical pedicure allows him to fully assess my feet. Patiently chipping away at the dry skin on my heels and filing my nails, he explains about the most common types of problems his clients bring to him. He prescribes a simple rubber pad to be worn over my toe to protect the sore area and assures me that it was sensible to seek advice. Our feet suffer endless abuse, so where they’re concerned, prevention is definitely better than cure. Going for regular treatments like this ensures that any problems lurking under your socks can be picked up early. Often a bad back or a knee issue can be linked to a foot problem, and the solution can be as simple as placing an orthotic in the shoe. I’m sent home with some Barefoot Cannabis Therapy – the best foot cream, he tells me – and instructions to use it daily and only file my feet once a week. The treatment has left me with the summer ready baby-soft feet I have dreamed of – I’ll be proud to don my strappy sandals now. BP 18 Wimpole Street, W1G (020 7631 0724; feet4lifeuk.com)

Alongside the original Southall restaurant, the brothers now hold an incredible 18 contracts with some of London’s finest venues, including The Savoy and The Landmark, and run restaurants at The Grove and the Sheraton Skyline Hotel. Though each restaurant offers a slightly different experience and price point, wherever they dine, guests of Madhu’s are always guaranteed the very best food, service, ambience and value for money, whether they come for an à la carte dinner, or for cocktails and a sharing platter. The latest Madhu’s restaurant opened in The Dilly, Piccadilly’s newest luxury hotel, in June, and promises to be the finest yet. The setting is the hotel’s opulent Grade II listed Oak Room, which provides the perfect backdrop for the vibrant Indian cuisine for which Madhu’s is loved. Offering an exquisite à la carte menu, highlights from Madhu’s of Mayfair include the Robata grill offering – try the exquisite paneer tikka, marinated in chilli and turmeric yoghurt, or the Madhu’s Machi, a signature dish of whole seabass in an onion and carom seed marinade. Following in their grandfather’s culinary footsteps, teenagers Sanjay and Sanjeev Anand launched their own restaurant in 1980, in Southall, London. Madhu’s Brilliant, as it was initially known, was named for both the brothers’ grandfather, and their father Jagdish Kumar Anand, whose nickname was Madhu. As the name suggests, it was very much a family affair – and this is still the case 40 years later. Specialising in Punjabi cuisine with a Kenyan twist, Madhu’s success lies in the secret recipes which have been handed down over four generations.

Feast your eyes on this month’s finest HOT TABLE

Pali Hill You might think it a bold move to open an Indian restaurant on the site of one of Captial’s most legendary curry houses, but the team behind Pali Hill are more interested in offering diners a new taste of India than filling Gaylord’s shoes. The London debut of New Delhi-based Azure Hospitality is named after an old suburb of Mumbai. Gone are the white table cloths and dark carpets, the new interior is kitsch and colourful with Pondicherry yellow and inky blue paintwork, art deco light fittings, mid-century inspired rattan furnishings and folk patterned cushions; eclectic artwork has been specially commissioned for the walls. Head Chef Avinash Shashidhara (previously River Café and Hibiscus) and his team work from an open kitchen at the back. The concept: regional Indian small plates, adapted from home recipes and traditional techniques, made to share in an informal setting. I visit with old university friends. We haven’t been together since early last year, and have much to catch up on, so we are slow to make our dinner choices. The waiter suggests a papadi chat to share while we digest our options. We’re pleased he does: a popular north Indian streetfood, it is made with fried flour crispies (papadi), spiced yoghurt, red and yellow tomato, pomegranate, sev, mint and tamarind chutney. It is pleasingly crunchy, sweet, spicy and extremely moreish, and bodes well for what is to follow. And we are not disappointed; the langoustines – which come fresh from Scotland on the train daily – are succulent and juicy, served in a delicious wild garlic, ajwain and chilli dressing, which we mop up with the warm tandoori sourdough roti (though, dripping with house ghee, this is equally good eaten alone). We fight over the sea bass, which comes steamed inside a banana leaf and topped with matchstick potato chips, served with raw mango, mint, coriander and lime. The fragrant Cornish lamb biryani is a safe option, but one we’re pleased we made, and is perfect accompanied by an excellent dal tadka. Plates licked clean, we’re told we simply can’t leave without sampling the Alphonso mango cheesecake, and we concur that it was good advice. The perfectly ripe mango is sweet and juicy. We are too full to sample Bandra Bhai, the funky looking underground bar, but vow to return soon and work our way through the cocktail list, too. RECIPE

Classic Pesto Pasta

SERVES 4

North west Londoner, Angelo (AKA Bello) is well known on Instagram for his “super sexy” recipes and flamboyant videos showcasing authentic Italian cooking. Now he has launched his very first cookbook, Bello’s Sexy Pasta (£19.99, cookt.co.uk), in an interactive format. Angelo says: “For Italians, food is more than simple nutrition, it is culture, relations, memories and family. My aunt Rosanna is the Queen of Pesto! I always follow her recipe when I make pesto and I have to say, the result is always absolutely delicious. If you close your eyes for just a couple of seconds while eating this dish, you will be immediately transported to my aunt’s backyard in sunny Italy. Enjoy the trip!”

INGREDIENTS 320g trofie pasta | 30g fresh basil leaves | 55ml extra virgin olive oil |3 tbsp Parmigiano cheese (grated) | 1 tbsp pecorino cheese (grated) |1 garlic clove (peeled) | 10g pine nuts | a pinch of salt

METHOD Toast your pine nuts in a pan over medium-low heat for about 90 seconds or until golden, stirring occasionally. In a blender, add your fresh basil leaves, extra virgin olive oil, grated Parmigiano and pecorino, garlic clove, your toasted pine nuts and a pinch of salt. Mix everything until nice and smooth. Add your pesto into a bowl and set aside. Boil your pasta in some salted water, drain it and mix it with your pesto, adding some pasta water if needed. It is very important you never heat up your pesto, this is why I like to use a bowl instead of a pan. Serve with some more grated Parmigiano cheese on top. Buon appetito!

TIP You can use any pasta shapes for this preparation. Trofie, orecchiette and linguine are my favourite ones! For a vegan dish, simply leave out the cheese or substitute it with the same amount of nutritional yeast. Serve it with a nice glass of Sauvignon.

Chet Sharma Chef patron, BiBi

What’s the last thing you cooked? At home, a fish curry. It was a classic Mysore/Karnataka style, rich with roasted coriander and cumin, and bright with tamarind and curry leaves. At work we have just finalised our opening menu, so I’ve been tasting a lot of those dishes, too. There’s only one dish that is yet to be boxed off, which is our chocolate dessert. It’s made with malted rice and some unbelievable chocolate from Pondicherry. I liken it to classy Cocoa Pops. What’s your signature dish? It’s cliché, but I don’t have one – I cook with what’s available and at its best in the market. What do you cook on your days off? Earlier in my career I rarely cooked at home. Now I’m cooking a

Your home, your life

07_FabricAUG21_Food&Drink_3p.indd 50

lot more on my days off. I’m a sucker for a barbecue, so cooking anything over charcoal keeps me very happy. Best meal you’ve ever eaten? A great question. As an experience, Blue Hill at Stone Barns, in the Pocantico Hills, New York state was pretty hard to beat. The whole set up there is a real celebration of ‘farmto-table’. For one of 30+ courses, we had two ‘single udder’ butters drawn from individual cows of the same age and breed, to highlight the impact a cow’s dietary preferences have on their butter – mind-blowing! Guilty food pleasure? I love a good crisp. Pringles have made it back into my life in a big way during the past year, as well as Kurkure, which are much-loved crisps in India. I’ll be using them in a dish at BiBi.

If you could cook for anyone, who? My grandmother. I would have loved the chance to cook for her at BiBi; even better would have been to have her around for dish development! She was a strict vegetarian which is one of the many reasons we have such a strong vegetable focus. I would probably be most excited to give her the buffalo-milk paneer, which I really do believe to be the best paneer I’ve ever tasted. What should no kitchen be without? A sharp knife – far less dangerous than a dull one. While £200 plus seems excessive, the investment on a proper artisan knife will last a lifetime. Backed by JKS Restaurants, BiBi opens on 9 September. 42 North Audley Street, W1K (bibirestaurants.com)

EAT LOCAL

Hot off the coals Love the taste of barbecued food but can’t get to grips with cooking it? Why not let Belsize Village local Jake Finn take the tongs this summer? His new restaurant, Cinder celebrates cooking over charcoal, with every dish on the

menu produced using his Josper grill. Jake, who has previously worked at La Petite Maison, COYA and The Ritz says: “I think there is nothing purer that cooking food over fire. I’ve been obsessed with barbecue and cooking over grills since I was little… for me it’s unadulterated cooking; food as it was intended to be eaten. At Cinder I’m pushing that out but also bringing some ‘cheffiness’ into the

proceedings, with sauces, reductions, stocks, and killer sides. It’s a dream come true.” Having originally intended to open last May, Jake instead created a home delivery service during the lockdown,

gathering a large local fan base. His debut restaurant has now been open for a couple of months and those numbers are growing, attracted by Jake’s delicious fare. Stunners such as seared tuna, black beer ponzu, radish and spring onion; the tenderest lamb kebabs marinated in yoghurt, maple syrup, oregano and sage; and grilled Mastelo (a Greek cheese that is similar to halloumi) with Kalamata glaze and oregano. All served up alongside a curated wine list hand-picked by Alex Percy, AKA The Modest Merchant, as well as fine wines from Bibendum. Welcome to the Village, Jake. 66 Belsize Lane, NW3 (020 7435 8048; cinderrestaurant.co.uk)

NEW LAUNCH

More toast, less tipple The landscape of low- and no-alcohol drinks has changed beyond recognition over the past 10 years. No longer limited to fizzy pop and fruit juices, non-drinkers now have a whole host of options available to them, and we’re excited about a new launch in this field. Oddbird, one of the largest producers of wine that has been ‘liberated’ from alcohol, has just launched its Blanc de Blancs and Sparkling Rosé wines from France and its Spumante from Italy. The wines are produced using the finest grapes from the best vineyards, selected at the right level of maturity and then fermented using traditional methods before being “liberated from alcohol” using a unique, patented vacuum distillation method (preserving the wines’ natural flavours and aromas). Not just alcohol free, these delectable drops also contain on average one tenth of the calories found in wine with alcohol, so you can truly indulge without the guilt. Whether teetotal or sober curious, these zero-alcohol sparkling expressions look set to make special occasions unforgettable this summer. From £8.99, available from 31dover.com and Harvey Nichols. WILTSHIRE WANDERINGS

Holidaying in the UK? You can take your four-legged friend along, too, on this luxury Cotswold country escape WORDS by BECKY POMFRET

It is with great excitement that we pack up our car and set off on the A4 out of London, Wiltshire-bound. It’s our first trip away since early 2020, so, truthfully, we’d be pleased with any change of scenery, but we are thrilled that we’re off for a two-night break at five star The Manor House in Castle Combe. Not only is the hotel located in a 14th Century beauty of a building, the village itself is chocolate box pretty and has been used as a film location on numerous occasions. As we motor up the winding driveway it does feel a little like we’ve stumbled onto a film set. A white vintage Rolls Royce is parked outside, providing the perfect backdrop to some Instagram snaps before we’ve even checked in. A romantic mini-break it might be, but we have not travelled alone – our chocolate springador Rocky has been invited along, too. After months of our undivided attention, he has been prone to suffering a touch of separation anxiety since our diaries starting filling up again, so we were reluctant to leave him behind. Indeed, part of the attraction of The Manor House is that it is dog-friendly. To Rocky’s delight he can roam freely and off the lead around the beautiful hotel grounds. Rooms are found in the main house and in a row of mews cottages, which is where we are situated, right beside the ancient village church. Our suite is in an old converted stable with beamed ceilings and stained glass windows. It mixes old and new effortlessly, with stylish accessories and modern amenities like Le Creuset mugs and a Dyson hairdryer, as well as a pair of yoga mats. Rocky doesn’t miss out as there is a bed for him, too, along with bowls and

a tasty treat. In fact, the treats are in abundance – we find a bottle of Taittinger and some home-made fudge waiting for us. The main house is cosy and comfortable, in a classic country style; stone fireplaces, low lighting, comfy wingback chairs, and plenty of little nooks and small lounges to hide away in. There is a Michelin-starred restaurant and a well-stocked bar, and an afternoon tea that is so highly-rated, we’re told people travel from far and wide to sample it. All the staff clearly love dogs and there’s a seemingly never-ending supply of treats from every pocket. Though don’t be put off if you’re not a dog-lover: they are limited to only certain areas in the hotel, meaning it’s easy to enjoy dog-free peace if you wish it. On our first night we eat in the local pub, The Castle Inn, which is owned by the hotel. It’s but a minute’s stumble from our room, and we dine on excellent, hearty food including salt beef croquettes, battered catch of the day and sticky toffee pudding.

55

09_FabricAUG21_Travel Review - Manor House_1p.indd 55

Having the dog with us ensures that, in spite of the weather being pretty awful, we get out to explore the local area. The hotel staff furnish us with easy to follow maps for local walks, offering a variety of distances. We opt for an hour long stroll out of the village and Rocky enjoys a bracing dip in the babbling Bybrook river. It’s such a treat to be out of London and the countryside is stunning, as are the hotel grounds. It is a popular spot for weddings, and it’s easy to see why. When Rocky digs his paws in, refusing to get into the car to go home, he’s not the only one who is reluctant to leave this heavenly spot. From £252 per night bed and breakfast, based on two sharing (exclusive.co.uk/the-manor-house)

or art-lovers, a house isn’t a home until the walls are adorned with original works, but if you’re new to collecting, it’s difficult to know where to start: the art world can seem inaccessible and hard to navigate. Thankfully, a number of new initiatives are popping up that aim to break down the barriers of art’s exclusivity, allowing homemakers to purchase an original print with the same confidence they would a stylish new furniture piece. Founded by Claudia Kennaugh in 2019, Art & People was set up to bridge the gap between artists and collectors, providing professional coaching and curating advice respectively. Since then, and with new pandemic rules in place, the service has exploded internationally and found its natural home online, with a much wider virtual audience keen to connect through art. With clients as far-flung as Colorado, Claudia has spent the past year providing one-to-one sessions, six-week courses and group-based workshops online. And while there’s nothing quite like the buzz of a bustling real life art fair, there’s certainly something to be said

for discovering our favourite new artists in the comfort of our own home. From this September, Art & People is offering streamable online tutorials with invaluable advice for artists covering a range of topics such as writing and talking about your work; pricing your artwork; exhibiting your work; and gallery submissions. Whether they’re fresh out of art school or seasoned exhibitors keen to progress, Claudia will be sharing her expertise with artists, guiding them towards compatible galleries, platforms and projects. For those of us wishing to expand our collection at home, the curating course – in three digestible half-hour tutorials – covers advice on how to buy, frame and hang artworks. Encouraging us all to be bold with framing, whether that’s for a stand-out statement piece or an abundant gallery wall, Claudia will demonstrate how we can bring character and contrast to a collection – wherever we are in our curatorial journey. “It’s not what you know about

Just as Covid has moved Claudia’s venture into the virtual world, leading art consultant and curator Kath Wood takes a look inward by bringing the conventional art exhibition into the domestic sphere. Kath & Company is a brand-new visual arts agency, whose initiative Art at Home presents seasonal collections of affordable and original art by living artists, and, just like Art & People, its raison d’être is to connect artists with new audiences. Excitingly, Kath & Company has invited 12 artists over the course of 12 weekends to host a series of two-day selling exhibitions, developed specifically for the newly refurbished project space in Kath’s west London home. In doing so, the agency is side-stepping the often clinical gallery space and instead, offering collectors a chance to view the works and engage with artists in a relaxing, homely environment – which makes perfect sense when you consider an artwork’s

ultimate destination, our own four walls. In taking the works away from the conventional gallery and into a real-life home setting, Kath is also highlighting the impact of visual art on interior design. “In our post-lockdown world, I want to attract and capture a new market and demographic of buyers for original, contemporary art by providing a new relaxed meeting point in a real physical space,” she says. Visitors can expect a wide-ranging variety of media, from paintings and sculpture to ceramics and textiles, with featured artists imagining original art for every room. Refreshingly, the initiative is designed to demystify the act of art buying whilst encouraging a broader view of the role of visual art in our everyday lives – at home. Pop the kettle on and get collecting. Until 17 October, Lion House, 13 Sion Road, TW1 3DR (kathandcompany.co.uk; newartathome.co.uk)

At home with

ROB & NICK CARTER

This renowned artist duo have transformed their central London mews house with colour pops that complement the artwork WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by VERONICA RODRIGUEZ

Can you tell me a bit about the property itself? R: It was built in the 1800s to house horses. The Hyde Park Stables are at the end of the mews and have been in operation since 1835. We’ve tried to retain some of the character, but have modernised to make it more comfortable. It has windows on all sides, which makes it light and airy. N: It has three floors with three bedrooms on the second floor for us and our two daughters. We’ve turned the old hayloft at the top of the house into a library bar. Then on the ground floor we have a sitting room, dining room and a large kitchen, as we love to cook. What was the house like before the refurb? R: It was a bit tired actually. The bathrooms hadn’t been touched in a while and now the girls are adults we wanted a more grown-up space at the top for all of us to use together.

Your home, your life

12_FabricAUG21_AHW_3p.indd 62

N: We use this space every day and really enjoy having somewhere to relax as a family. We also extended the kitchen and built more storage – it doesn’t matter how much we declutter, we seem to need more cupboards as the years go by! What made you enlist architect Ben Masterton-Smith for the project? N: We knew Ben from working with him at The Groucho Club so didn’t hesitate to work with him again. Would highly recommend. How has the house been opened up to make the most of light and space? R: The property has windows on three sides, which is, of course, great for light and air, although quite unusual for a mews house. We also put big skylights in the top room to maximize the light in the bar/library area. The whole house is very bright.

62

AT HOME WITH

How does colour feature in your home? R: Colour is the central part of our studio practice, so it was inevitable that we would have lots of colour in our home. N: We love a ‘cluttered hang’ on white walls with colour coming from the artworks. Art plays a central role in the home, can you tell me about your favourite pieces? N: I’ve been curating the artwork at The Groucho Club since 1989, so the work in our home is by friends that we’ve met over the years. Our collection includes work by Polly Morgan, Charming Baker, Rachel Howard, Jason Martin, David Shrigley, Boo Saville and Marc Quinn… to name just a few! All the works have a story and are very personal to us. Tell me about your furniture choices N: We wanted a relaxed home, not too precious. The furniture is mostly retro Danish or Italian mid-century, which we’ve acquired over the years.

AT HOME WITH R: We love to source unique vintage and antique pieces from Vinterior. Our dining table was a wedding present. It was a Victorian scullery table so has a rich history you can almost feel. N: We wanted it to be strong enough to dance on! I love the blue plaque, can you tell me about it? N: The Blue Plaque is an artwork we’ve always liked, it’s by our friend Gavin Turk. I bought it for Rob for Christmas one year. It makes us smile. Which is your favourite space? N: I like the downstairs floor probably the most as it is the womb of the house, somehow. It changes every day though, depending on my mood. Tell me about living (and working) in Connaught Village R: We enjoy hanging out here as it’s so close to home and has a lot to offer… unique boutique shops and great cafés. We love The Victoria pub, too. We enjoyed making artwork for Connaught Village during lockdown. Our gallery space is also located here, so we can walk to work, which is a nice bonus.

N: It’s so convenient – we can access the whole city from here. We are so lucky to live so near to Hyde Park, which we adore. The parks are the lifeblood of this incredible city and we felt this even more during the lockdowns, spending time in one of the Royal Parks every day is a delight. What’s next for Rob and Nick? R: Over the last three years we’ve been working with KUKA and a team of cutting-edge software programmers to teach a robot to paint in our style of choice. N: The robot’s been busy over lockdown executing commissioned portraits and we’re continuing to push the boundaries of using this new medium with the introduction of painting in colour. R: We’ve also just acquired another robot to paint with light in complete darkness, which we’re filming at the moment. N: In terms of exhibitions, we’re delighted that our first colour Robot Painting is currently on display at Van Gogh Alive in Kensington Gardens. R: A rendition of Van Gogh’s famous Sunflowers – one of our favourite paintings in the National Gallery – our transcription was executed over 40 hours of continuous painting by our robot. N: We’re now working with our robot to execute six identical Van Gogh Sunflowers paintings and we’re busy working on new pieces at the studio for upcoming art fairs and exhibitions. We’re also thinking of new ideas for a new film for our Transforming series. We might be doing a residency abroad and shows overseas – when things open up again! robandnick.com

MAYFAIR PHOTOGRAPHY by GEORGIA WATSON

The home of high fashion, art and culture – and some of the world’s best restaurants and hotels – this is one of the most prestigious postcodes in the Capital. Quintessentially British with its Georgian architecture, yet cosmopolitan and modern, it is no surprise that Mayfair is the most sought-after square on the Monopoly board Your home, your life

From our agents...

Host team manager at 45 Park Lane There’s nowhere in London quite like Mayfair, and it’s a great privilege to work here. A perk of my job also means that I’m well placed to know about all the best local spots, many of them foodie… Hideaway is my go-to for a coffee: situated on Mount Street, it was launched by Ollie Dabbous and his team from Hide, so the food is pretty special too – think filled lobster rolls. Afterwards I’ll head to Selfridges for a spot of shopping; voted the best department store in the world you really can get anything here. For brunch, Hush Mayfair is my go-to, or for a special occasion, COYA’s incredible bottomless Champagne brunch is hard to beat – such a treat! For lunch, Michelin-starred ROKA Mayfair: the contemporary Japanese food is delicious and it’s an amazing place to sit outside on a warm sunny day and watch the world go by. My favourite Mayfair restaurant has to be C London, though. It’s a sophisticated Italian and I think there’s no better way to spend a Sunday

than having an indulgent lunch here. For drinks, I love Mr Fogg’s, or the rooftop at Alto by San Carlo at Selfridges. The latter is a really special place, and the views are fantastic. For dinner, you can’t beat Amazonico; it’s just so unique and the food is totally different to your typical restaurant. I also like to go to Nobu on Park Lane – it’s a classic and the best place in London for sushi, in my opinion. Of course, we’re lucky to have an exceptional food and drink offering at the hotel, too. 45 Park Lane is home to CUT and CUT Out, renowned for the best steak in London and led by newly appointed executive chef Jamie Shears, as well as BAR 45, famed for its legendary Negronis. We’ve recently launched a brand new menu of art deco cocktails, celebrating the hotel’s unique architecture and longstanding ties with the artistic era. “Market conditions in Mayfair are still slightly challenging, due to travel restrictions, but the demand is still there, with deals being done all the time, especially in the £7.5 million plus region. There are fewer viewings happening, but the buyers who are looking are actually buying. This is one of the most famous areas in the world and it will always continue to be a popular place to live or visit.”

2. Claire Reynolds, Savills

“Properties here include traditional red-brick buildings, which take in apartments and larger homes, through to newer world-class developments. Prices range from around £700,000 through to around £100 million. For a prime property fronting Grosvenor Square, buyers can expect to pay circa £7,000 per sq ft. Despite challenging market conditions over the past year, the Mayfair market has seen strong activity and some significant sales take place.”

Simon Hedley from Druce nominates this aptly named restaurant and bar, which is tucked away in one of Mayfair’s many hidden courtyards – a proper local gem. “It’s always festooned with flowers and foliage,” he says. “It was opened by Roger Moore’s son Geoffrey and it has the most wonderful al fresco dining terrace. Inside, the walls are littered with black and white celeb friends all giving the ‘hush’ symbol with their finger to lips.” While the flowerfilled courtyard is a must-visit this summer, so too is the opulent cocktail lounge.

For an authentic taste of Italy in central London, this buzzy eatery is a must-visit – Serafino Fiori opened his first restaurant, Il Marchese at 121 Mount Street back in 1953. Danish Arif from Chestertons says: “The family run restaurant boasts friendly service and has a vibrant atmosphere. They do the best pizzas in Mayfair, and it’s an ideal spot for lunch or an evening meal with a drink or two.” With plenty of veggie options, and delicious mains including Pollo alla Milanese, you might want to start with a Negroni as you peruse the extensive menu.

Historic Mayfair has evolved to feature some of the coolest galleries, shops and restaurants the Capital has to offer – but parts of it remain charmingly old fashioned. This gentlemen’s club, set within a beautiful Edwardian townhouse in the heart of the neighbourhood dates back to 1868. Hamptons’ Jonathan Hough is a member, telling us: “I enjoy spending my time here. It is host to one of the finest dining rooms and is bursting with charm and panache. The club and its members exude friendliness and conviviality, and for me, it really is a home away from home.”

A personalised Pearson education

One of the biggest benefits of online schooling is the ability to personalise learning, but what does that actually mean? And how can it be achieved?

T

o personalise is to design or produce something to meet an individual’s requirements. “Personalising a student’s learning isn’t a one-time process,” Jo Vigneron, Principal at Pearson Online Academy UK Global tells us, “It is an ongoing process with students, Success Coaches, parents, and teachers working together to set, review and adjust goals for the student and determine a timeline for accomplishing these individualised learning goals during the school years.” Pearson Online Academy UK Global is a high-quality personalised online private school delivering Pearson Edexcel International GCSEs and A Levels for students aged 14–18 that can be accessed virtually, anywhere. The school inspires and empowers its students to achieve academic excellence through an affordable online education that prepares them for brilliant futures. “At Pearson Online Academy UK Global, our Personalised Performance Learning approach gives EVERY student the best chance to flourish,” Jo says. “We ensure they receive the one-on-one, tailored attention they deserve, and it starts from the point at which successful applications are made.” As students enter the school they discuss their strengths, skills, and previous school performance with their teachers, Success Coaches and parents to help inform and guide the best teaching and personalised online learning approach.

These conversations, along with assessments and other data, are used to identify and evaluate a student’s strengths, weaknesses, and talents to help select courses and create a learning plan based on the student’s individual needs. “We uncover skills that may need improvement and look for ways to enhance the student’s learning potential – a practice that continues throughout the school, where subject testing is used to identify areas of strength and weakness, measure progress, and establish learning goals. Regular communication schedules and adjustments to learning plans and timetables, as well as electives, mean teachers, Success Coaches and students can collectively ensure individual needs are met,” says Jo. Underpinning this Personalised Performance Learning approach is over 20 years of experience supporting online schools to engage and flourish. “We’ve specifically created our educational programmes for online learning to ensure that every student is fully engaged in their learning and that our teachers are equipped to bring out the very best in them,” Jo reveals. “Within the structure of a complete school programme, students use our online learning platform to study from home, joining ‘LiveLesson’ sessions to deepen their understanding with expert teachers and their fellow students across the world. This ‘flipped classroom’ has been proven to increase student engagement and encourage critical thinking, whilst working alongside peers from other countries helps to broaden their understanding of different cultures and build an international network of friends.” Pearson’s online learning platforms are currently being used by over 105,000 students to power their learning. Students follow an individual learning pathway, working through high quality, interactive, self-paced study materials, with teachers using LiveLesson sessions, office hours, and other contact time to stretch them where possible and offer more support when needed. The flexibility of self-paced learning combined with the extracurricular activities and a Success Coach helps students stay on track to meet their personal targets and allows them to thrive with their education. By building and managing their own timetables, students receive a personalised experience that gives them control over their learning and fosters independence and self-discipline. “This approach sets our school apart from the rest and ensures each and every student is able to achieve their potential,” concludes Jo. THOUGHT

A sense of belonging In an increasingly globalised world, jobs can take families to far-flung lands. But the advantages of experiencing new cultures and seeing the world are weighed against repeated and regular moves, and the losses associated with these. Parents who find themselves in this situation naturally want to ensure that their children maintain a sense of stability, community and a rooted identity. And the fear for expat families is that this may not always be possible. Third Culture Kids (TCKs) was a term first used by US sociologist Ruth Hill Useem in the 1950s, to describe children who spend their formative years in places that are not their parents’ homeland. Globalisation and a transient job market have made TCKs more common. Perhaps reassuringly, though, it is widely recognised that TCKs develop their identity based on people rather than locality. David Laird, principal at the International Community School in London tells us: “Having worked as an international school head teacher in China and Portugal, and now at the ICS in London, I have often had parents share their TCK concerns with me during school admissions tours or when their children arrive for their first day at school.

“An important message I convey to parents is to focus on the substantial advantages that being part of an international school community, like ICS London, brings for young people. Part of the role of schooling is to prepare children for a future world that does not yet exist. I would argue that international schooling is best placed to meet this need. We live in a global, technological and fast changing society. As well as providing academic rigour, schools must provide an environment for learning where students can build resilience and foster an ability to constantly adapt. Furthermore, access to collaboration within a multicultural community can only further nurture tolerance, respect and a young person’s ability to find their place in a future global community. However, we often yearn for those past school experiences of our own and seek to bestow them upon our children. It’s a mistake often made by politicians and elders alike. As parents, grandparents and guardians, we must ask ourselves the question: Take yourself back to your scholarly days – Did your school prepare you for the world we live in now?” (020 7298 8800; icschool.co.uk)

We ensure each pupil has time to progress in areas of interest to them. How do you prepare the students for life after school? Our in Preparation for Life Programme is being designed to prepare pupils for life beyond school in the broadest sense. Core modules include: ‘Political Understanding’, which addresses topics such as how the British political system works, the role of an MP, British political parties and global politics; and ‘Financial Literacy’, which explores what inflation, interest rates and tax are, and how loans and mortgages work. What are you most proud of? Always ensuring that pupil wellbeing comes first. Online schooling – the next big thing? Online schools are growing in popularity, says Heather Rhodes, Principal of Harrow School Online. Her team explain why and reveal what makes their school different

Benefits of online schools In today’s uncertain landscape, online schooling offers stability and security for pupils – something which is particularly important during those school years when pupils are preparing for crucial exams. Online schooling can reach students wherever they are located and give them the flexibility to fit learning around their lives. The ability to personalise learning to individuals is incredibly powerful, too – pupils can be stretched where possible and supported when required. Students at a well-designed online school can thrive academically while developing the skills and mindset to become better independent learners, which they will need in order to excel at university. And the sector is expected to continue growing as more students discover the benefits and flexibility of online learning. Introducing Harrow School Online Harrow School Online is the first of its kind – a fully online sixth form school offering a world leading independent British education. “It brings together the richness and heritage of a Harrow School education with leading online learning

technology and teaching practices,” Principal Heather Rhodes tells us. “We started planning several years ago and opened our virtual doors to the first cohort of A Level pupils in September 2020. “We believe that online education done well can be as effective as classroom-based teaching, but the key is not to try and translate what works in a traditional bricks and mortar school directly into an online environment. Each environment has its advantages, and virtual schooling should be organised to make the most of its innate strengths.”

interactive, and teachers make use of tools like polling, interactive whiteboards, and break out rooms where pupils work with their peers. Laurie Phippard, Mathematics and Further Mathematics teacher explains the advantage of this approach: “One of the fantastic benefits of studying maths at Harrow School Online is that you can access the mathematics content at your own pace. You can revisit it as many times as you wish. Your tutor will also support you with topics that you might find daunting, but in addition enrich or extend as needed for other topics, and of course encourage.”

Flipping the classroom Online teaching works particularly effectively with a ‘flipped classroom’ teaching methodology – a method that has been implemented at Harrow School Online. It involves students working through interactive self-study materials to develop an understanding of subject content, and then having targeted lessons in a virtual classroom where teachers explore their understanding of that material. Class sizes are small – no more than ten pupils – so teachers get to know their pupils well. Lessons are highly

Pastoral care Alongside this focus on academic excellence, Harrow School Online ensures all pupils are safe, happy, involved and able to perform to their potential through regular meetings with a Success Coach, and a House system which forms the backbone of the school community and provides the chance for peer support and encouragement. Success Coach, Dale Krause, brings a wealth of experience of supporting high achieving pupils and co-ordinating support for pupils who require additional assistance. He says: “From day one I coach pupils on university selection and provide carefully tailored career planning. I develop in them the skills and mindset for success, both at our school and beyond. In fortnightly one-to-one coaching sessions, and small group workshops, I provide students with careful guidance on how to become effective independent learners.” On demand open event Prospective pupils and parents can get a flavour for what sixth form is like at Harrow School Online by watching an On Demand Open Event or signing up for a virtual event or taster lesson, offering the opportunity to hear from the teachers and pupils. No jargon here. No Egos.No high-pressure sales tactics. Just simple & honest advice. We caught up with one of our new clients, Neil Dickins, to show him around his new property. Within three weeks of the house purchase we did all external work identified by the survey as needing attention and internal beautification to bring it up to spec before the first guests arrived. What were you hoping to achieve when making an investment with BTLH? “I make very high risk, seed stage investments in tech companies, and wanted an investment to balance my portfolio. Like all assets, property values fluctuate but the likely downside compared to stocks (or early stage companies!!) is lower.” Why did you choose BTLH? “For me the most critical word in seeking success is ‘niche’. I loved the niche, under-represented ‘mid-term let’ idea as outlined by Adrian. My due diligence consisted of meeting his business partners Alex and Lucy, who also impressed me greatly and convinced me that the company was solid and would

deliver on its promises. The great thing about the space that BTLH has carved out for itself is that it needs a particular kind of focus and attention, which I don’t think potential competitors will understand even if they try to emulate BTLH. The other reason, of course, is that the ROI makes sense.” What has your experience been working with BTLH? “Excellent from the outset. I’m 100% confident that the outstanding service levels will continue. We’ve also rented the house out for an excellent medium-term rental even before it has been listed, which I’m sure is a positive portent of things to come.”

Any advice to someone else who might find themselves in your situation? “Call me to invest in some crazy risky early stage tech companies. Eschew sensible investments like BTLH!” So… if you find yourself looking for an investment all piquant with crazy risk and excitement, contact Neil Dickins direct to hand over your hard-earned cash for him to invest in some dodgy early stage tech companies – and if you feel more like Neil, then get in touch with BTLH and see if we can find you a little gem like his so you can make a sensible investment. Neil’s parting words to us were: “I might start thinking about my next project with you guys…” You heard it here first!

RESEARCH

Notable neighbours Benham and Reeves have conducted a fun study to see which London landmarks command the highest property prices – important if you happen to be house-hunting in the vicinity. Analysing data across postcodes home to 15 of the Capital’s best-known locations including the British Museum, Tower Bridge, and Piccadilly Circus, it makes an enlightening read, with the Royal Albert Hall pushing neighbouring property prices up by a staggering 524 per cent compared to the London average.

ASK THE AGENT

Q. What pitfalls should I be aware of when buying a do-er upper? A: Probably the biggest pitfall is the perception that it will be a lot cheaper than buying a ‘ready made’ home – often building work can come in well above budget. So, before making an offer, I would recommend finding out how much work is required and what it will cost to complete. Try to obtain quotes from a couple of contractors. Also, make sure you have enough time put aside to deal with sourcing materials and managing contractors, and that you are able to cope with stressful times. If you don’t see any of this as being a problem, then go for it! David Stern, Parkheath
