Until 28 September Noël Coward Theatre This Tennessee Williams drama began life as a short story back in 1948. It wasn’t until 1961 that it saw its Broadway debut as a full-length play, with an Oscar-winning film adaptation in 1964, and a host of productions on both sides of the Atlantic to follow. Proving its perpetual appeal, it has returned for a sizzling summer in the Capital, and stars Clive Owen alongside Anna Gunn, Lia Williams and Julian Glover. Set in a dilapidated Mexican hotel, the play promises themes of freedom, desire and despair. This two month season celebrates one of the most beloved actors to have ever graced the big screen, with an indulgent line-up of films, talks and even an evening course to explore his incredible legacy. Part one features early works such as Blonde Venus (1932) and The Awful Truth (1937), while an illustrated talk from Dr Charlotte Crofts, Cary Grant: From Knockabout to Knockout, takes place on Wednesday 7 August.

ello! How are you? I’m so sorry about this morning,” Aisling Bea exclaims as we settle down to chat. We have had to put back our interview due to a double booking; I assure her that we wouldn’t stand in the way of an audition. “You’d stand in the way of my future,” she exclaims, with mock indignation. “Yeah, I’ve been juggling a few things around. Dammit, must do better Aisling!” she adds. “Suddenly, going, ‘I’m really busy’, isn’t a badge of honour anymore, because it’s like, oh, you’ve clearly not managed yourself well. You know? For me the last year has been all about how to work as well, but in a more sustainable fashion. I think that is a lot of us. I think culturally that is happening a lot now…” It is an interesting point, given that we’re here to talk about new Channel 4 sitcom, This Way Up, about a woman recovering from a breakdown. The series is not only written by Aisling, but stars her, too, alongside the wonderful Sharon Horgan. “It’s hard to describe what something is when it’s not a big action movie,” Aisling tells me. “You know, like two people get caught in a twister and have to make their way out… It is sort of just about life really. The core characters are Aine, who I play, who is little sister to Shona, who Sharon Horgan plays, and we start the show – this is a spoiler for the first five minutes – with me getting out of rehab after a nervous breakdown.”

Poignant and funny, the show is essentially about the pursuit of happiness, and how that journey is harder for some than it is for others. “What I wanted to do was to make a show not about falling apart, but to show the daily-ness of getting better, I suppose. I’d like for it to be more complex than that, but it’s not.” Does the sisters’ relationship in the show reflect Aisling’s relationship with her own sister? “Erm, maybe not with my sister, but my relationship with Sharon…” Aisling tells me. “I mean there are threads of so many things in there. There’ll be a complexity of people in a character that you might write. I think with writers, they might meet an interesting character in a café, and then five years later the thing they did will make it into a sketch. So, it’s like your brain becomes a sort of creative dictaphone.” Whatever it is based on, the relationship between the sisters comes across as being very natural, and that is genuine, Aisling assures me. “We’ve been working together for I think nine or ten years now. Sharon is like a big sister to me, maybe more so than a friend. Sometimes you meet somebody who you just get on with really well, and the chemistry pops out through the screen.” This portrayal of sisterhood is something the pair have been working towards for some time. “When we made the pilot a year and a half ago,

it was like, oh finally, we get to do this thing! Because I first played Sharon’s sister in Dead Boss, and we wrote a movie together, and a year later we made a TV show, then that got cancelled, and we wrote another TV show, and they said no to that. And then I wrote this one on my own, and she’s my sister in it. So, it’s been a long old process together. And I think we couldn’t have done it if we didn’t really love one another,” she declares. Thinking for a moment, before laughing: “I think, anyway – she might be like, ‘oh God, finally let me loose on this woman!’” Aisling is perhaps best known for comedy now, but acting is where she started out, 17 years ago. “I think a lot of the time one begins acting to transform into somebody else – am I sounding like a total wanker? The challenge of transforming is lovely and can be good for your soul sometimes.” Comedy was always on the cards, though: a personality that turned into a job, as Aisling puts it. “One of my great loves has always been making people laugh, and I can’t really imagine doing anything else,” she tells me. “I wish I could say that I used to be really quiet and shy and it gave me a way to speak out, but as soon as I could talk, I wouldn’t shut up! It was annoyingly the only thing I could do; you know, like when somebody is good at maths and they’re like, I don’t really want to be an accountant, but what else is there I can do….”

hat’s not to say that the path has been an easy one. “When I started, I found it nerve-wracking,” she explains. “Because I had been an actor for so long. Feeling like you are a professional in one part of your craft and then starting another one and being a real newbie, that was the nerve-wracking thing,” she explains. And baring her soul to audiences wasn’t always easy, either. “Being myself is a totally different thing to pretending to be somebody else,” she explains. “You definitely feel the knocks more with stand-up. It is harder to separate the work from who you are, because it is you and it is your stories, and your point of view and stuff, you know.” It is definitely, she assures me, a job that requires: “a high threshold for shame.” That said, Aisling’s stage personality isn’t exactly the version of her that her friends know and love. “Imagine you are paid to go to a dinner party and you have to be lovely,” she explains. “That’s the stand-up version of me. The stakes are just slightly higher than just assuming your normal personality. You are ‘on’, if that makes sense.” The dinner party analogy is never more fitting than when it comes to appearing on panel shows. “It’s weird, you know when you go, ‘oh that’ll be a lovely dinner party,’ but then you turn up and somebody has had a bad day, or you’ve had a bad day and you are feeling weird. It’s kind of the exact same as that, because comedy is all about the feeling in the room. And the way you feel,” Aisling explains. “I mean, you see 23 minutes of time, but they record for two and a half hours, minimum. There’s some that are, of course, quite fun, but that is the most jobbed form of being a comedian. So, they can be tough, and I think that anybody who says that they aren’t is lying. And you can call them out on it!” she declares. If Aisling isn’t watching panel shows to unwind, what does she switch on instead? “Box sets are my guilty pleasure,” she tells me, adding, “I don’t know if I feel guilty about that though. Guilty pleasure suggests that it is something I feel guilty about. Murdering that guy, oh but I loved it…” she cackles. “I’ve been watching loads of stuff, but I am going to say my favourite is Derry Girls, just because it is so bloody brilliant. Lisa McGee who wrote it, who I know quite well, is just a genius really, because she is educating Britain about Northern Ireland through giant big belly laughs. So that is one thing I love.” What else does she love? “There’s a pub near me called The Myddleton Arms that does the nicest roast in all of London. On Canonbury Road. Oh my God the roasts are just bloody delicious. I love that: papers, friends and roasts,” she sighs. “That is just a joy of a day in London – walking there or going for a walk afterwards because we are all so big and piggy tummied. That is one of my greatest joys,” she grins, adding: “Do you know what, I have been in London for 11 years now and I really just feel like it is my home. I would love to go around saying, oh I really love the art galleries, but I don’t think I ever really go to art galleries! I love being in pubs in London – I just love the vibe.” So, will we still find her here in London in five years’ time, propping up the bar at The Myddleton? “The life things: who bloody knows really,” she shrugs. Work is different though: “I’d love to think that the show went for three series, and I think it would just be the three series. Maybe two. I’d like to think I had a few what I feel like are firm steps on the ladder filled in. If that makes any sense? And I feel like I am almost getting there. I feel like I have been given an amazing year and I am very grateful for it, but to really lock it down I would love to do a few movies.” Exciting times ahead… This Way Up will air on Channel 4 this month

I

have been cursed with natural corkscrew curls; no matter how many compliments I receive, I always dream of silky straight locks. But as tempting as the idea of a straightening treatment was, I could never quite reconcile myself with the harsh chemicals and the intensive heat treatment required. haring isn’t a concept that comes naturally to most siblings, but my brother and I are happy to give it a go when it comes to eating out. Particularly when the food in question comes from a three Michelin-starred chef. Arros QD in Fitzrovia is Quique Dacosta’s first restaurant outside his home country of Spain. Specialising in rice, the basic staple often bemoaned by the contestants on I’m a Celebrity…, it doesn’t sound exciting, but we’ve been assured that this place is far from ordinary.

Dacosta’s mission is to share his passion for seasonal dishes by reinterpreting traditional Mediterranean favourites. The centrally located kitchen brings a real sense of theatre, with flaming wood fires, on which the food is cooked, creating a dynamic and dramatic atmosphere to enjoy whilst you dine. Our knowledgeable waitress recommends we choose three dishes to share for starters. First up we are presented with what look like four black pebbles, but are in fact cheese stones. A hard shell of cocoa butter gives way to a rich and creamy combination of

Parmesan and manchego. The seasonal cherry tomatoes, with tomato snow and sundried tomato emulsion that follow are refreshing and packed full of flavour. But the stand out dish is the prawn skewers topped with tomato salsa. They are absolutely delicious! So much so that one each left us wanting more. Fortunately we save ourselves for the main event, Iberian presa paella for two. You needn’t worry about meagre portion sizes here, there is certainly plenty to go

around. The meat, a prized rare cut, melts in the mouth and we scrape the caramelised edges of the giant pan until it is clean. There’s still space for dessert, though. I plump for the pistachio sponge, while my brother tries the cheesecake. Both prove to be light, flavourful endings to the meal. Managing to taste both truly authentic but modern at the same time is no mean feat, but Dacosta has successfully managed to evolve the traditional Spanish favourite, losing none of what makes it a classic in the first place. Head pastry chef at The Bloomsbury When I was a child, I wanted to be… a stage magician and illusionist like David Copperfield. I still perform magic for corporate and private clients; I use food in a lot of my tricks. I also try and put a little magic in my desserts, where possible! The first thing I cooked was… cakes with my mother. Professionally, the first kitchen I worked in had bread and butter pudding as a staple on the menu, which was probably the first dessert I made.

Iced delights Can’t decide between a long, cold summer drink or a delicious frozen gelato to cool you off this summer? My kitchen heroes are… Antonin Carême for his contribution to modern cuisine. He is recognised as the first celebrity chef, having cooked for everyone from Napoleon Bonaparte to the Tsar of Russia and George IV of England. In the modern day, I would say I take my hat off to anyone who can manage to make profit whilst producing wonderful food. My fail-safe dinner party menu is… carrot and coriander soup followed by Feijoada (a Brazilian stew that I am just completely hooked on), dessert would be a deep wedge of passion fruit tart with coconut coulis and whipped crème fraîche. My last meal on earth would be… my mum’s fish pie.

THE JEWEL IN DEVON’S CROWN

Forget the South of France, on a beautiful summer’s day there are few finer places to be than the English countryside, and nowhere finer to stay than the Highbullen Hotel by Penny Clements

either Dartmoor nor Exmoor; Rivieraesque south coast or surfer cool north, Highbullen Hotel sits in grand isolation in the heart of the glorious Devonshire countryside. Set in its own estate of 127 green acres, the hotel boasts some of the best leisure facilities in the area, with an 18-hole golf course, tennis courts, swimming pool and spa. Pulling up outside its deep porch we are suitably impressed by the Gothic manor house, which houses the main hotel. With its gabled roof and dramatic stone archways, it was built as a family home in 1879 by architect William Moore, taking inspiration from the Victorian Arts and Crafts movement. There are 11 individual rooms within the manor house, each lavishly decorated with antique furniture and chandeliers, and 26

contemporary estate rooms in various buildings around the estate. Wherever you lay your head, though, there is no doubting that Highbullen offers the ultimate in sophisticated luxury. We spend our first morning exploring the vast estate; marvelling at the abundant wildlife and feeling our city stresses melt away. Later, retreating to the Laura Ashley Tea Room, we while away the afternoon enjoying a Devon cream tea (cream before jam, naturally). Replete, we head to the sun loungers on the veranda, where we sip on cocktails, mesmerised by the uninterrupted views of rolling greenery. There’s just time before dinner for a little extra indulgence at the Highbullen Spa, where I am pampered with an Elemis Superfood facial and the most divine aromatherapy massage. Afterwards I float between the serene indoor

pool and Jacuzzi, both offering panoramic views. As night falls, there are more delights to be discovered at Highbullen. With its striking blue and gold palette and exclusive atmosphere, the Devon View Restaurant is the place to be. We enjoy a bottle of expertly selected wine and tuck into an unforgettable dinner experience. Executive Head Chef Stephen Walker has created a menu that blends flavours, aromas and textures from the local countryside. Slow-cooked rump of Exmoor lamb, locally-reared pork, Skrei cod and seabass served with different styles of potatoes and steamed greens all make an appearance and nothing disappoints. Settling down in our supremely comfortable bed, we reflect that it is easy to see how this stylish hotel has made a name for itself as ‘the’ place to stay whilst in this region of Devon.

T

he early morning mist evaporates off the surface of the infinity pool in front of the shala as the sun rises above the hill in the distance. The only sound is the ringing of cattle bells in adjacent fields. It is about as far from my London life as is possible to imagine. I have agonised over whether I deserve this particular indulgence – wondering if my family will cope without me for four days, and if the money would have been better spent on a trip for all of us. Right here, right now, I can say that I categorically do deserve it, and I have never felt such overwhelming gratitude. I’m in Alentejo, rural Portugal, for a fournight yoga and fitness retreat organised and

hosted by the wonderful Shani van den Borst, of Fit Birds and Cami Vidal, of La Masion Wellness. Our base for the long weekend is Margem, a tiny white-washed Portuguese village surrounded by wheat fields, cork oak forests and wildflower meadows. It is so peaceful that it feels almost untouched by the 21st century. Our group has taken over the whole of Herdade da Maxuqueira, a 500-year-old working farm, now offering very chic agritourism breaks. The days begin with guided meditation, looking out over that vista, after which we are led through an hour’s fast and dynamic Vinyasa yoga flow. We cool off afterwards with freshly prepared smoothies and juices before

tackling a HIIT session in the shade under the nearby orange trees. And we are rewarded with an exquisite breakfast spread – all deliciously healthy, save for the pastéis de nata, which come fresh from the oven every morning, and are impossible to resist (when in Portugal, and all that… and of course, what are those burpees for, if not to sanction a little indulgence from time to time?). The day is ours to spend as we wish: running through the fields, borrowing bikes and taking leisurely rides through the neighbouring villages, exploring local vineyards, or simply relaxing by the pool, journaling on the terrace outside the room or chatting to new friends.

We come together in the evening for a yin yoga session – a glorious hour of assisted deep stretching as the sun sets. SHEDDING LIMITATIONS

When it’s not filled to the brim with garden tools and miscellaneous household junk, a garden shed can offer indulgent me-space away from the main property: a media room, a crafts workshop, a bar, a yoga studio... Whether you’re thinking of converting your existing outhouse, or creating a dedicated extra room from scratch, the possibilities are endless by Ali Howard

Architect Rodrigo Moreno Masey built his own contemporary outhouse without an existing structure to work with. He set out to create a flexible, multi-functional space for the whole family to enjoy What was the inspiration behind the build? I’m inspired by the changing face of garden sheds, and how they’re no longer purely functional buildings for extra storage; they’re often considered a completely distinct and separate place from the home, where different activities can take place. What is the space used for? A multitude of purposes including an office, a study, a gym, a TV room, a playroom, a cinema, a library, a bar – and sometimes, just a simple shelter to provide some solitude! Talk us through the design. I wanted the look of a classic garden shed – four walls with a pitched roof. It’s taller and deeper than most sheds, framing the outside space where it sits. I used timber cladding to distinguish the building from the house – as being a non-domestic and entirely different space. I wanted the shed to look beautiful so I thought carefully about the layout of the cladding. The silvered, aged oak boards are arranged to create a geometric pattern, running over the entire building. There are no gutters as I wanted the roof and walls to blend seamlessly. Inside, I used practical tiles on the floor which

extend out to the terrace creating a continuum between indoors and outdoors. I used plywood on the walls inside and installed some shelves for storage. What advice would you give to homeowners wishing to build an extra garden room? The most important part of the design for an outdoor shed is its impact on the main house. The building will be in view from the house forever so it must be elegant, timeless and beautiful. Outside spaces need to be flexible, so consider wiring the space and include plumbing, just in case. And always make sure you obtain the correct planning development rights before you start. It’s worth engaging with neighbours and the council to see what’s possible in your garden. A West Hampstead family wanted to replace an existing shed with a flexible outhouse that spanned the width of the garden, providing an art studio, ample storage and a retreat from the main property. For this, they appointed architect Amos Goldreich Which materials did you use to protect the structure from the elements? For cladding, we sourced recycled sheets of corrugated steel that had weathered naturally during their previous use. This material was chosen to reflect the light industrial buildings in the neighbourhood – and especially the workshops opposite. For windows and doors, we used oak that had been specifically treated for external use. We also used this for the decking, steps and the landscaped elements of the garden.

How does the studio reflect its surrounds? A green roof was installed to act as natural insulation whilst enhancing the appearance of the studio when viewed above from the neighbouring properties. The green roof also softens the metal cladding and contributes to the local biodiversity, absorbing rainwater. Are there any particular challenges when designing an outdoor structure? Connecting the studio to the existing services in the main house is a challenge. The studio is completely separate, meaning all hot water, power, waste and drainage has to connect through the garden into the existing utilities. This was complicated here due to a steep slope from the studio to the house, so it required careful coordination between sub-contractors. Building in the garden meant there were no existing foundations to the garden walls, which also complicated the build. Tell us about the use of natural light in the design. Adding natural light is always a priority within our architectural proposals. From the outset, we wanted to install as many roof lights as possible to ensure a high level of natural light was achieved in the studio – at any given time throughout the day. We also added a large window and door with a glazed panel at the front of the studio, to add natural light, but also to create a visual connection between the studio, the garden and the main house. agarchitecture.net

When Maurizio bought the one-bed London pad he shares with partner Chris and their dog, Ralph, the plan was to expand from the get go by Ali Howard

The apartment is located on the top floor of a Victorian house, which allowed the Italian designer to extend up into the empty roof space. With this extra square footage to play with he was able to reconfigure the accommodation below, and has created a sleek and chic living space that makes shrewd use of its limited footprint. The living room boasts two large, front-facing windows that bring an abundance of natural light into the flat. Maurizio stole space from the existing commodious bedroom to create a smaller guest bedroom and a new bathroom, while he converted the loft space to create a large master bedroom with two skylight windows for natural light and fresh air – and as much storage space as possible. With deft design, he’s even managed to squeeze in a small walk-in wardrobe. “During the renovation,” he says, “I opened up what used to be a very dark and small living room space, removed the bathroom, which was oversized in the context of the apartment, and removed part of the kitchen wall to create an open plan living space.” The kitchen/dining room feels deceptively spacious with the use of lustrous floor to ceiling cupboards in dark wood, echoing the flooring. Far from

imposing, the dining room doors create a clean line that continues into the kitchen, drawing the eye nicely. And it’s thanks to Maurizio’s eye for potential that any of this could have happened. “To understand what you can do with the space is crucial,” he says. “You have to look beyond the initial appearance. I do the same with all of my client projects. When visiting a client for the first time, I look at what I can do with the space to make the very best of it.” Whether for clients or for his own home, Maurizio creates modern, timeless and elegant interiors. The apartment mixes mid-century furniture pieces with contemporary stylings in a palette inspired by nature: the rich mahogany is offset with slate greys and broody blues. There are some cherished design classics in there, too: “The Eames Lounge Chair upholstered in Missoni fabric is probably the most valuable – and my favourite – piece in the apartment,” he enthuses. “I originally bought this piece from a vintage shop in very bad condition and I had to spend time restoring some of the woodwork. I used one of MissoniHome’s classic patterns for the upholstery as I wanted to create something different and make it stand out.” It’s clear Maurizio enjoys a project, and doesn’t shy away from a labour of love. The apartment is unquestionably a triumph of design, on both floors, but which room is his go-to for everyday comfort? Where does he spend the most time? “The open plan living space is definitely my favourite room,” he says. “The flat is not very big, but by opening up the walls and creating an open plan kitchen, I was able to create a cosy and inviting space. Chris and I love cooking and entertaining, so the kitchen is perfect as we’re able to have guests around and cook whilst enjoying a nice glass of wine and a gossip!” So what’s next for the man who lives and breathes design? “I recently launched a very exciting project, as I was able to create a monobrand property in the heart of Mayfair. Now, we’re working on three new projects: a loft in Shoreditch for a young businesswoman, and two family homes in Chelsea. I’m also working on my first Italian project, a large apartment in Milan, which is and will always be my first love!” mauriziopellizzoni.co.uk

Queen’s Park

Centred around a 30-acre park this trendy area boasts a strong sense of community. With the local farmers’ market once voted best in the UK, and an annual Queen’s Park Day celebration held in mid-September (complete with baking contest, dog show and food stalls), this will come as no surprise. Beautiful rows of period properties line the park, the majority of them unconverted, making the area popular with families. And there are two high streets, filled with independent shops, cafés and restaurants. Meanwhile, the park itself offers six tennis courts, a playground and paddling pool, a small petting zoo and botanical gardens. It’s easy to see why the locals consider themselves so lucky

Did you know? The park, named in honour of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, was designed by Alexander McKenzie, one of the most influential park designers of his day. His vision included small formal gardens, large open areas of lawn and colourful shrubberies. When it first opened, legend has it that a park keeper called Long Tom would chase children from the shrubberies brandishing a long stick (a bench in his memory can be found on the east side of the park). During the Second World War the park was used as allotments for locals, and housed airraid shelters, army huts and a barrage balloon. Still very much a valued community space, it was given a Green Heritage Site Award in 2014 for its care and conservation of open space and facilities.

Above all, I love just chatting with customers. Queen’s Park is different to other places I’ve lived in London over the last eight years (including Shoreditch, Marylebone and Notting Hill). It’s a beautiful suburb full of young families, with a great mix of both creative and finance backgrounds, but what sets it apart is the strong community feel – everyone says ‘hi’ when you pass them on the street. TURNING TO TUTORS WITH MORE AND MORE PARENTS TURNING TO TUTORING IN AN EFFORT TO HELP THEIR CHILDREN TO WIN PLACES AT ACADEMICALLY SELECTIVE SCHOOLS, A GENERATION OF YOUNG PEOPLE ARE BEING PUT UNDER UNNECESSARY STRAIN, SAYS ONE NORTH LONDON SCHOOL

P

rivate tutoring in the UK is a multibillion-pound industry, with London the epicentre of this highly lucrative sector. Reports suggest between 40 and 45 per cent of the Capital’s children have received tutoring at some stage of their educational journey, meaning we are approaching the point when non-tutored pupils will become the minority. Perhaps, given that the industry is largely unregulated, we have reached that point already. However, tutors are only filling a gap in an insatiable market, says Jonathan Taylor, Head Teacher at North Bridge House Senior Canonbury in Islington. The current tutoring epidemic is the inevitable consequence of an academic arms race that shows no signs of abating. It has fostered a negative cycle whereby academic selectivity feeds the tutoring industry, which in turn fuels academic success, which further justifies academic selection. This is repeated ad infinitum. And nowhere more so than in London. Parents eager to give their children the best start in life are both unwitting victims and necessary contributors to this ever more competitive and somewhat demoralising system. Feeling compelled to secure places at the ‘best’, most academically selective schools, they turn in hope to expensive tutors. Once a place has been secured these same parents are subject to the pressure of having to maintain the school’s reputation for academic excellence; faced with the prospect of their child’s place in Sixth Form being in jeopardy, not to mention the socially ostracising potential of a less than perfect academic record, the parent once again submits to the services of the trusty tutor. Or, in many cases, several tutors. This symbiotic relationship between highly selective schools and tutoring agencies is not a sector specific issue; academically selective schools in both the state and independent sectors provide a boon to the industry. This is obvious to all but those who have a vested

interest in denying the link. Research last year by John Jerrin and Sam Sims from University College London identified that around 70 per cent of those who received tutoring won a place at a grammar school, compared to just 14 per cent of those who did not. It is clear who the winners are in the current system, and it isn’t a generation of young people whose emotional and mental wellbeing is under strain like never before. Exams and academically selective schools have always existed; it is merely the stakes that have changed. So when an increasing number of parents are sourcing tutors for their child in preparation for 4+ entrance exams, despite the revelation that three quarters of UK 5-12 year olds already spend less time outdoors than prison inmates, perhaps we should pause to consider; if tutoring is always the answer, are we asking the right questions? Dealing with the fallout When writer Keren David found out she’d flunked two of her A Levels, she was devastated. “It was a horrible shock,” she recalls. “I still feel sick thinking about it.” Evolutionary psychology is to blame for this response, says consultant clinical therapist Mira Schauble. “To survive, we have to adapt ourselves to the norms of the group. Society values academic success highly, so failure puts us at perceived risk of being ousted from the group – which threatens our survival.” Young people are particularly vulnerable because they’re still developing a sense of self. They’ve also yet to build the emotional resilience to counter negative experiences, so exam failure may lead to feelings of worthlessness. Mira has some practical tips for helping them to deal with the fallout. Do: Explain that exams don’t define a person. Then do an exercise to identify the child’s strengths and build up a broader sense of self-worth. Present the bigger picture: it’s just one blip in years of taking exams. And talk about successful people who failed exams or left school early. Examples include Richard Branson and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Work out what went wrong. Often, there’s an emotional reason, like a disruption in the peer group. Your child needs the space to talk this through, either with you or a therapist. If they flunk for no apparent reason, consider getting an assessment from an educational psychologist to see if there’s a learning difficulty. You can then make sure they get the tailored support they need. Don’t: Dismiss their concerns and say: “Don’t worry – you’ll be fine next year.” Instead, empathise first, then make a plan. Project your own disappointment on to your child. They’re already dealing with their own disappointment and that of their teachers and peers. Leap straight into hiring a summer tutor. When we push children to see tutors during their down time, we teach them it’s not okay to rest, which could be harmful to their future mental health. If you think it’s important they get a tutor, perhaps leave it to the end of the holidays, or stick to just a few sessions a week. You can read about Mira’s work at theedpsych.com. full arts and humanities A Level curriculum was added. By the early 1990s, a GCSE programme was in place, and the college was thrilled to welcome its first Year 9 pupils last September – a natural entry point to prepare for GCSEs. Fine Arts College also offers a Portfolio course, aimed at preparing students for Art Foundation. Its founders always saw the college as a bridge between school and university, a place that encouraged self-discipline and self-motivation, and this distinctive philosophy is still very much in evidence today.
