The definitive guide to London living
42
FROM THE EDITOR If you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you’ll be excited to hear that the prequel hits our screens this month. It hardly seems possible that the last series of the cult show finished three years ago, but then the intervening years have been fairly eventful… We caught up with north London-based actor Steve Toussaint, who stars in the new show, House of the Dragon – you can see what he had to say about it in our exclusive interview. In other television-related news, we spoke to Escape to the Chateau’s Dick and Angel about their fairy tale home, Château de la Motte-Husson; the ultimate doer upper. Elsewhere in the magazine, we explore the new market in luxury retirement living. With facilities akin to five-star hotels, these fabulous developments are something to seriously aspire to, but they don’t come cheap. Time to start setting aside those pennies. And that’s just the highlights – there’s plenty more in this issue to keep you entertained, as always. Here’s to a superb summer…

CULTURE THEATRE
The Tempest
Until 22 October, Globe Theatre There’s always magic at Shakespeare’s famous amphitheatre, especially so this summer as the Bard’s tumultuous tale of reckoning and redemption is brought to life with a fresh adaptation. Directed by Olivierwinner Sean Holmes, and with Ferdy Roberts as sorcerer Prospero, Nadi Kemp-Sayfi as his daughter Miranda, Ciarán O’Brien as the monstrous Caliban and Rachel Hannah Clarke as spirit Ariel, we’re in for an enchanted treat. As always, groundling tickets are just £5 – the same price as when this wooden ‘O’ opened back in 1997. Fingers crossed the tempestuous weather stays on the stage. 21 New Globe Walk, Bankside, SE1 (020 7401 9919; shakespearesglobe.com)

Cruise
13 August-4 September, Apollo Theatre
CRICKET, ETC
The Hundred 8, 24, 27 & 30 August, Lord’s
For the uninitiated, this is a high-octane competition that fuses world class cricket with the best in family-friendly entertainment. Taking place across the UK, with a number of clashes held at Lord’s, fans will have the chance to see some of the best players in the world go head-to-head alongside suitably rousing musical performances and DJ sets. Partnering with BBC Introducing, the line-up features some of the UK music scene’s most exciting artists, guaranteed to bowl you over.
One of the first productions to premiere in the West End when theatres reopened in May 2021, Cruise was met with huge critical acclaim, picking up an Olivier nomination for Best New Play. This strictly limited summer run at the Apollo is one hot ticket, then. Written and performed by Jack Holden, and with an original electronic soundtrack performed by John Patrick Elliott, the play is both a celebration of queer culture and a moving tribute to the veterans of the AIDS crisis. Holden and Elliott say, “This incarnation of Cruise will be bigger, brighter, louder and prouder. We can’t wait to get back on stage, make one hell of a noise, and take our audiences back to 1980s Soho.” Shaftesbury Avenue, W1D (cruisetheplay.co.uk)

EXHIBITION
Angela Santana
Until 31 August, Saatchi Yates
In her first UK solo show, this Zurich-born, New York-based artist both explores and rejects the male fantasy through 14 large-scale oil paintings. Hailed as an empowering reinterpretation of the male gaze, the exhibition positions the Internet as a modern-day muse. “By shifting the object to become the new subject, I highlight how, throughout history, images of women were often passive and pleasing,” says Santana. A visceral and thought-provoking exhibition that observes the history of the female form in the arts and its lasting influence in today’s digital age. 6 Cork Street, W1S (020 8187 9445; saatchiyates.com)

hree years on from the final season of Game of Thrones, HBO will transport fans back to Westeros this month with a highly anticipated prequel to the franchise. “The events in House of the Dragon take place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and they sort of chronicle the fall of the House Targaryen, which is the house of Daenerys, played by Emilia Clarke,” Steve Toussaint explains when we catch up to chat about his role in the show. The story is primarily based on the George R.R. Martin book, Fire & Blood, and was created by Martin alongside executive producer Ryan J. Condal. “We meet the Targaryens in House of the Dragon when they are on top,” Steve explains. “My character is called Lord Corlys Velaryon, also known as the Sea Snake, because he is an incredible explorer and a great naval seaman – every time I say that word it still makes me laugh, I am very immature,” he laughs. “He is the richest man in the land after his nine voyages. His family is thought to be the oldest family in Westeros. According to his books they were the first ones to make the journey to Westeros and settle there, even before the Targaryens.” Little is known about the series, but we do know that it will tell the story of a war for the Iron Throne, fought between rival factions of the Targaryen dynasty. “At the beginning of the series, there is a choice about who should rule this land,” Steve explains. “And the choice is between my wife, Rhaenys Targaryen, played by Eve Best, and Viserys Targaryen, played by Paddy Considine. And the realm chooses Viserys, and my character feels that he is a nice man, but that it should be my wife ruling. So, a lot of this series is me plotting and trying to find ways to get my wife closer to the throne, and in fact onto the throne.” For a fan like Steve, the appeal of the role was obvious. “I would’ve loved to have been in Game of Thrones,” he tells me. “So, superficially, there was that. But actually, what it came down to, when I came to meet Miguel (Sapochnik, the director) and Ryan, when we were first discussing the job, one of the things we talked about a lot was fathers, and fatherhood, and hopes for your family and all of that sort of stuff. So, despite the fact that, as I said, Corlys is rich and he is a guy who wants to seal his legacy, he is a husband and a father, and he wants the best for his family. Now, that doesn’t always mean that it is what is best, but it’s what he thinks is best. I liked the angle that they were coming at it from – that,

OK, we can have big swords and all that stuff, but actually, these are still people. I get to show quite a few different sides – there is rage, there is intellect and manipulation, but also there is bloody mindedness.” Whether the approach has paid off remains to be seen, but Steve is impressed with what he has seen. “Like everyone, I have seen the trailers, and a tiny amount when I had to go in and do a little bit of ADR a couple of weeks ago,” he explains. “I can say that what I have seen looks epic, as you would expect – no expense spared. But I am as keen as everybody else to watch it unfold properly, rather than having the highlights picked out of it.” Steve rarely watches his own work, but this is something he will make an exception for. “Over the last, I don’t know, ten or fifteen years I have barely watched the things I am in, I find it excruciating!” He exclaims. “Unless I am in something where I don’t really look like me, do you know what I mean? So, the last thing that I was in that I watched… OK, yeah, I did an episode of Steve McQueen’s Small Axe, and I watched that, because they put a wig on me, and a moustache and glasses, so I thought, well, I’ll have a look at that. And I will watch this, because I don’t usually have foot long dreadlocks and a big white beard,” he laughs. Steve thanks both Gary Oldman and Frank Bruno for the fact that he is now working in the industry, though neither man is probably aware of the role he played. “I grew up in SE London: New Cross/Deptford, that sort of area,” Steve tells me. “And sometimes people would go, ‘Haha, you’re funny, you should be an actor,’ but I didn’t know anybody who was an actor from my neighbourhood, so it was never something that I thought was within my reach. Years later, I went to university, and while I was there, I was offered a part in a play by the Nigerian Poet Laureate Wole Soyinka. And I did the play and really enjoyed it. But I still didn’t think that acting was something that people from Deptford did. So, when I finished university I started temping, working in banks.” Things might have worked out very differently if it hadn’t been for going to see Prick Up Your Ears. Steve describes watching Gary in the film and thinking how amazing he was, then later learning that the actor had spent his childhood very close by, in New Cross. “I was like, oh my God, people like me can be actors. So, then I called up drama schools, because I had asked how you become an actor and been told, well, you go to drama school, and then you audition, and you get in. So, I rang up a couple of drama schools and they said, yes, come along and audition, bring your money. And I was like, well, if I don’t get in, do I get the money back. And they laughed and said, no, we keep that.” Determined to pursue this ambition, but reluctant to part with his hard-earned cash, Steve decided to enrol in acting classes. “I thought, well, what I had better do first is find out if I actually can act. So, what I will do is I will go and do evening classes, and find out if I actually have any talent,” he explains. As it transpired, the evening class tutor thought that there was talent there, and encouraged Steve to approach various theatres, asking for work. “I wrote to some, and one of them, The Churchill Theatre in Bromley, was looking for a tall black man to play the genie of the lamp in their pantomime. The year before, Frank Bruno had played it at The Dominion, so I guess they thought, hang on, what a great idea. Then my letter came through the door, and I was cheap. I auditioned and I got it. And that is kind of how I got in,” he shrugs.

INTERVIEW
Steve is incredibly grateful that things worked out the way they did. “I’m not sure what I would’ve done if they hadn’t,” he admits. “The office work used to kill me. I studied politics at university, and I am interested in politics, especially these days, as an observer, but I don’t think that I would want to be involved in politics. I might’ve been a photographer, but I’m not sure that I have any talent in that department. I just like taking photos of people. I do like to think that I would’ve found my way into something creative, though. Perhaps I would’ve taken my writing more seriously because I always liked writing back when I was at school.” In fact, this is something that Steve has been focusing on lately. “A couple of years ago a friend of mine, a director, wanted to get back into directing – he had been in academia, teaching, but he wanted to get back into directing – so he asked me if I could write a short that he could direct and use as a calling card,” he tells me. The pair were both fans of 1970s style political conspiracies and decided to write something along these lines. “I was doing some research: we’ve had 55 prime ministers and 28 of them have come from Oxbridge. John Major is famous for being one of the ones who didn’t. So, I thought it could be interesting to write something about somebody who hadn’t followed this route. Somebody who had risen to prominence through street politics and so forth. And then, something that had happened in his past threatens to scupper his ambitions. So, I wrote this thing, called A Viable Candidate, and we made it,” he explains. They took the film to various festivals, thinking that that would be the end of it, but it wasn’t. “A couple of years later, someone from a major broadcaster got in touch saying they had seen it, and that they thought it might make a TV series,” Steve reveals. “So, they have allowed us now to try to develop it into a six-parter, which is what I am doing at the moment. Finally, this week I should be finished with it. So, I have had to expand the world, develop a pilot episode, write a six-episode arc, create a small biog of the main characters… I’ll then send all that in and hope that they like it and that we can develop it further. It is still very early days, but yeah, it is exciting. We’ll keep our fingers crossed and see what happens.” This isn’t something that has come naturally to Steve. “The funny thing is that I like the idea of telling stories,” he admits. “I think, oh, imagine if this happened, and then that happened and so on… And that’s great. That’s fun. But once you write something down and then somebody critiques it, and starts going: ‘Well, why would they do that? And that doesn’t make any sense. And what’s the arc? And what does it really mean?’ It becomes incredibly tedious, and I absolutely admire people who get up every day and write. People who do it as their job and have these wonderful stories that they have to tell. Purely from a selfish point of view, I am writing because there is a part in it that I would like to play, so I’ve got to write that part, sort of thing.” So, what is it that makes for an irresistible part? “That’s a good question,” Steve ponders. “The actor’s answer is something that is different to what I did before, which is true, but I think, ideally, and I don’t always get to play these roles, the character who is caught up in something bigger than themself. Characters who have both internal and external foes and oppositions to overcome are the best of them. So, in an ideal world, that would be what I would try to do. Which is what we are trying to do with A Viable Candidate. But then, also, sometimes it can just be: ‘Oh my gosh, I’ll be working with that actor, or that particular director’ or ‘I like this writer’s work, so I just really want to do that’. It varies.” If Steve’s CV is anything to go by, it is a formula that is proving fruitful. In a career spanning over 20 years, he has appeared in many big name projects including Prince of Persia, The Knock, Line of Duty and most recently Small Axe and It’s A Sin. And right now, aside from House of the Dragon and A Viable Candidate, there are a couple of exciting jobs in the pipeline for him. “I have got a part in this film by the directors of a movie called Boiling Point – I don’t know if you saw that?” He asks. “It was all one shot set in the kitchen with Stephen Graham. Good movie. So, anyway, the producers of that are producing another film, shooting as we speak, called Gassed Up, and I am in that, so that will be out next year. And, during the lockdown I shot a crime series for Channel 4 called Before We Die, and it proved to be very successful, so I will be going back to do season two of that in a couple of months’ time. So, yeah, that is keeping me busy until Christmas.” Meanwhile, catching up with those Targaryens promises to keep us busy for the next month or so, and personally, I can’t wait.

LATER LIVING
The future’s BRIGHT
With spas, bars and automated parking facilities for fancy cars, the Capital’s newest ‘later living’ developments are a far cry from the banal, beige retirement complexes of the past
Above: Auriens champions active ageing with a world class spa facility Below: smart technology in the kitchens ensures residents can continue to lead independent lives
It is estimated that the number of people in the UK over the age of 75 is set to double by the middle of this century. But we’re not just living longer, we’re increasingly enjoying better health for longer, too, so it goes without saying that lifestyle expectations for those later years are changing. The traditional retirement home no longer appeals, this growing market demands homes that are sophisticated and respectful. And increasing numbers of developers are catering to this new 60-plus market, building homes that are intelligent, futureproof, and luxurious, offering community living with a focus on lifestyle. Recent research by Savills showed that over the past five years, 41,464 new housing units for independent seniors have been built across the UK. And London is leading the way when it comes to luxury later living.
AURIENS
A leading example is Auriens, located just off the King’s Road in Chelsea. Here, hospitality design specialist, Richmond International, has redefined luxury later living with a collection of stunning private residences in one of the Capital’s most desirable locations. Combining the best elements of a five-star hotel, private members’ club, and luxury, full-service health and wellness spa, Auriens is home to 56 high-end apartments and an impressive selection of dining and wellness options. The apartments have been designed in collaboration with The Helen Hamlyn Centre at The Royal College of Art, a specialist Disability Discrimination Act consultant. All discreetly incorporate pioneering technology to futureproof the homes; in the sleek, contemporary kitchens, hydraulic pull-down cupboards and waist height pull-out dishwashers seamlessly offer support if needed, and the bathrooms feature gorgeous anti-slip marble flooring alongside technology that alerts staff if a lack of movement is detected. The philosophy here is to enable friends and family to remain central to residents’ lives, and with this in mind, a stylish subterranean cinema and intimate speakeasy bar provide the perfect spaces for entertaining. And the idyllic on-site spa ensures that wellness is at the heart of the community. Apartments are available to lease and are priced from £13,750 per calendar month for a one-bedroom apartment. For more information, see auriens.com
At Fitzjohn’s in Hampstead, Pegasus, part of the Lifestory Group, a leading developer of premium retirement communities, has created a community of apartments perfectly suited to modern living. The expansive homes, featuring high ceilings and picture windows, ensure that residents need not make any sacrifices on space when making the move from a large family home. And the floorplans feature interconnected rooms and hallways to offer maximum flexibility in how the spaces are used. A dining room might become a second living room; a bedroom could be used as a library, study or dressing room; and two adjoining bedrooms could be combined to create L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G

BELLE VUE
Down the road from Fitzjohn’s, Belle Vue is another Pegasus development. Set in landscaped grounds, world-leading architects Morris+Company have designed a striking building with details that echo those of Hampstead’s historic houses, while making a new and unique contribution to the area. Inside, the one and two-bedroom apartments offer accessible open-plan living areas that again maximise living space and natural light. Many enjoy a dual aspect, with loggia-style terraces and balconies offering striking views and helping to bring the outside in. Communal facilities are enviable here, too. Residents benefit from a ‘Lifehost’ – an invaluable part of the experience, they provide a sense of safety and security to the community. A pool, gym and stretch studio encourage a healthy lifestyle, while the sauna, steam room and treatment rooms are the perfect place to unwind. There’s an onsite restaurant, Sunday, which is also available to locals, and the Owners’ Lounge with its honesty bar provides a sociable space for residents. And, when friends and family come to visit, a guest suite provides comfortable accommodation at a reasonable rate.

MADE TO MEASURE, HOLLANDGREEN
Of course, for some, nothing compares to home. HollandGreen, a multidisciplinary practice of architects, interior designers and landscape designers reveal that they are finding increasing numbers of clients in their mid and later stages of life looking to expand, convert or renovate their homes to allow for ‘multi-generational living’. Like the clients who bought a plot on the banks of the Thames with the vision of creating a dream home for their retirement. Their brief was to create a beautifully architectural modern home, with plenty of light and space for family to stay. The resulting design is all on one level, but this is no bungalow. A cantilevered roof gives a sense of sitting outside in all weathers, and the sliding glazing
across both sides of the house allows a breeze to flow through. Despite the clean, white design and triple-height ceiling in the entrance and main living space, there is a cosy feeling, with a fireplace, underflooring heating and a separate TV snug room. The mechanical ventilation with heat recovery system – pushing out stale air and drawing in fresh – also gives a feeling of security after the pandemic. “What’s been so lovely is our clients telling us how their home gives them a sense of wellbeing – how the light, space and outside-inside feel really gives a sense of calm – imperative after their grandchildren’s visits!” says HollandGreen’s Stephen Green. hollandgreen.co.uk

ombining luxury living with lifestyle amenities, Fitzjohn’s, by Pegasus, part of the Lifestory Group, is arguably the finest new later living community in Hampstead. Located at No.79 Fitzjohn’s Avenue, the development consists of 29 apartments available exclusively for those over 60, for immediate occupation either through purchase or rent. Each residence at Fitzjohn’s has a distinctive design and layout, ensuring the customer has unrivalled options and choices that meet their personal requirements. Perfect for homeowners used to living in large family houses, the extremely spacious apartments have grand entrance halls, large dual aspect rooms with deep bay windows, high ceilings and full height windows. The development’s elevated hilltop location provides the apartments on the upper floors with sweeping panoramic views over Central London. Within Fitzjohn’s, each apartment offers interconnected rooms and hallways which allows for maximum flexibility in how the spaces are used, with Juliet balconies to all the principal rooms allowing fresh air and light to cascade into the living spaces. Residents could turn a dining room into a second living room; a bedroom could be used as a library, study or dressing room; and two adjoining bedrooms could be combined to create a large principal bedroom suite with bedroom, day room, main bathroom and twin walk-in wardrobes. The spacious kitchens are well equipped with integrated appliances, breakfast bar and marble worktops. The Bradden Method Boost Sarah Bradden appears to possess magical powers: she can tell simply by inspecting my tongue that I have just ovulated. A fact that I need to perform some quick mental maths to verify. And she suspects that – underneath my floaty smocked midi dress – it is causing me to suffer from bloating. It is, though I hadn’t made the connection. Cosmetic acupuncturist and founder of the Bradden Method, Sarah – who works exclusively from a beautiful space in Hershesons Belgravia – is one of London’s most sought-after holistic therapists. Her bespoke approach is a highly effective form of biohacking that combines cutting-edge medical wellness technologies, cosmetic acupuncture and emotional healing to help clients to achieve and maintain optimal health, prevent and reverse signs of ageing, and promote a positive state of mind. A spiritual reset and facelift rolled into one, if you will. The original treatment is 90 minutes long, but a new Boost treatment offers all the benefits in half the time. It sounds too good to be true. As I settle in for the treatment, we chat about my physical health and current mental state. I am extra stressed today, having had to navigate unexpected tube strikes to get here on time – the supremely comfortable chair, covered in a toasty heated pad, is already helping to make me feel more relaxed, though. This is no ordinary heat pad, Sarah uses a PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field)

All too soon, my Boost is over. I feel utterly rested and my complexion is glowing. I float out of the salon feeling totally removed from the stresses of my manic Monday morning. The sense of Zen stays with me for days and several friends remark that I am looking well. It is no surprise that Sarah’s services are so sought after, and I’ll definitely be back. mat which incorporates crystal, negative ion, and infrared therapies to provide a deep level of healing. She explains that it works by sending a low-level frequency throughout the body to recharge cells, speed recovery, and calm the central nervous system. It’s been scientifically proven to improve chronic pain conditions, ease inflammation, and improve immune response. Coupled with this, I’m wrapped up in a cosy weighted blanket, designed to provide a deep, constant pressure to aid relaxation and encourage better sleep. Never mind the treatment, I’m certain that
a quick cat nap here would do me the world of good. Before she begins applying the needles to my face and neck, Sarah attaches nasal cannulas to deliver activated oxygen while the treatment progresses. She explains that this helps to enhance the body’s repair mechanisms, improving digestion, metabolism, blood pressure, sleep and stress. Headphones are placed over my ears so that I can listen to meditative music as Sarah works her magic. While the needles are left to do their work, an LED light-therapy mask is placed over my face to stimulate collagen and elastin production. It feels as though I am lying in the warm sun, and with the sound of waves lapping the shore playing through my headphones, I imagine myself miles away on a tropical beach. The deep sense of relaxation is amplified by acupressure massage on my feet and hands, and, after the needles have been removed, Gua Sha facial massage. Finally, Sarah applies my personal prescription of ear seeds; a type of auriculotherapy, a traditional Chinese medicine technique, these tiny acupressure devices stimulate particular areas in the body. They look like jewelled piercings and apply constant pressure for up to five days. Sarah recommends squeezing each seed twice daily to apply additional pressure for an instant feeling of calm.

Sustainable skincare Unlike other skincare brands, Nêô Sephiri sells only one, single ingredient product, and when you try it, you’ll understand why. Their 100 per cent natural Pure Kalahari Melon Facial Oil is a little miracle worker. The fast-absorbing oil is produced from cold pressing the melon seeds and contains a unique combination of vitamin E and essential fatty acids that hydrate, nourish and protect the skin. It also acts as a natural cleanser, helping to unclog pores and remove excess sebum on the surface of the skin, without leaving a greasy residue. Skin hydration is significantly improved, oil production is balanced, and the skin’s natural barrier is restored. Apply a few drops as the final stage in your nightly routine, pressing gently into the face with fingertips until absorbed, and massaging into the neck and decolletage. It’s good for the planet, too: Nêô Sephiri is created entirely in sync with the local ecology of the Kalahari Desert where it is produced. Over 95 per cent of melon waste from the production process is recycled as organic fertiliser for the next harvest, leftover seed from cold pressing is fed to local grazing animals and any clean water left over from production processes is reused to irrigate the land. And local production secures the livelihoods of indigenous people in the remote Kalahari Basin communities that have been directly impacted by climate change. You could say that it’s working wonders on all fronts. £85 (neosephiri.com)

Feast your eyes on this month’s finest NEW OPENING
Last of the summer wine Raise a toast to Golborne Road’s newest opening, lively new neighbourhood wine bar, restaurant and music venue Caia. Since its opening last month, head chef Jessica Donovan has been wowing diners with a delicious menu of grill-based dishes produced from the very best seasonal produce – think asparagus with smoked onion to start, followed by monkfish with ancho chilli and beetroot, and an irresistible smoked cheesecake with Kentish strawberries to round off the meal. In the intimate 10-seater wine room, a floor-to-ceiling display showcases the exceptional wine list, which has been put together by expert Beth Brickenden and general manager Florent Giovannone to complement the foodie offering. The selection covers everything from storied producers to young upstarts and local London wineries. The basement is the beating heart of Caia, here, from lunchtime through to the end of the evening, guests can enjoy a carefully curated vinyl collection by Stranger Than Paradise Records founder Noreen McShane, taking them from the heyday of rare jazz, funk, tropical and disco, right up to the more sophisticated soulful selections from the here and now. And a number of takeovers and residencies from some of London’s leading DJs, record stores, label owners and producers have also been planned. Co-founder Tim Lang tells us: “We’re bringing together some of the best artists in London which is going to add something new and fun to the neighbourhood.” We like the sound of that.

This month sees an exciting new opening in the heart of Hampstead. Oak & Poppy is the latest venue from First Restaurant Group, the team behind north London favourites The Summerhouse and The Waterway. Seasonal nutritious dishes are the order of the day here, with an emphasis on casual grazing from breakfast right through to dinner time. And a peek at the opening menu promises good things – fish tacos with pickled slaw and chipotle mayo; lemon sole with a vibrant fennel salad, crushed potatoes and green salsa; and maple, soy and lime glazed salmon with egg noodles, pak choy, shiitake mushrooms and sesame seeds, for a start. The cocktail menu looks equally tempting – hands up for the Poppy’s Orchard with gin, Drambuie, fresh apple juice and lemon. But it’s the venue itself that we think is extra special – the dining room is housed in a gorgeous conservatory featuring a retractable glass roof and decorated with lush greenery and with a striking tree at its centre. It looks to be the perfect spot for drinks and dinner on a sunny summer’s evening.

FOOD&DRINK RECIPE
Apricot Greek Milk Pie
SERVES 3-4
Looking for something summery and sweet to round off your meal? Asimakis Chaniotis, executive chef at Pied à Terre recommends this delectable dish. He tells us: “This is my refined take on a classic Greek Milk Pie. I created it last summer when I was in Greece, back at my family home on the island of Kefalonia, where we have apricot trees in the garden. I had fun experimenting with the harvest and made lots of apricot ‘membrillo’ to go with our cheese course at the restaurant, along with this creation. The dessert is simple to make but has a wow-factor – give it a go!”

INGREDIENTS 6 filo pastry sheets 7x7cm | 6 filo pastry sheets 6x6cm | 6 filo pastry sheets 5x5cm | 6 filo pastry sheets 4x4cm | 3tbsp melted butter | 3 fresh and ripe apricots – cut in half, stones removed and then cut into wedges about 1cm thick For the cream filling: 300ml milk | 130g sugar |60g fine semolina | 2 eggs | 1tbsp butter | 1/5 vanilla pod (seeded, scraped) or 2 drops of vanilla essence For the lavender syrup: 50ml water | 50g sugar | 1tsp lemon juice | 2 sprigs of lavender METHOD 1. Preheat your oven to 180°C. 2. Start with the filo pastry which you have
already cut into different sized squares. Butter each piece and stack each same-sized piece together so you have 6 piles, all different sizes. This will create an impressive tower shape when you serve your dessert. 3. Place the filo piles onto a baking tray, lined with greaseproof paper, and bake for 15 minutes until golden brown.

4. Meanwhile, make your lavender syrup by adding
all of the ingredients into a pan and bringing to a boil, before taking off the heat. Remove the sprigs of lavender. 5. Over a wire rack, pour the hot syrup over the hot cooked filo pastry and leave to cool until the pastry dries out and is crispy. 6. Bring the milk to the boil and add the semolina, whisk constantly until it boils and thickens. 7. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs with the sugar and the vanilla. Take the milk mix off the heat and allow to cool slightly. When still warm, but not scorching, slowly start adding the milk mixture to your bowl whilst whisking constantly. Add the butter and mix until emulsified. 8. Leave the mixture to cool down but mix it every 5 minutes to prevent it forming a crust on top, then cover with clingfilm and place in the fridge for around an hour to set completely. 9. When set, remove from the fridge and whisk for a minute before transferring to a piping bag. 10. To serve, place the biggest piece of filo onto a serving dish. Pipe on a circle of cream, leaving space around the edge. Repeat until you’ve finished up all of the filo and you have a tower shape. Place the wedges of apricot into the layers of filo and cream. Serve immediately.
Ollie Dabbous has done it again, with a spectacular summer menu at his Michelin-starred restaurant, HIDE. The exquisite new dishes look almost too good to eat, presented as veritable works of art on the plate. Expect earthy dishes blossoming with taste – we love the gorgeous pea tartlet with fragrant herbs; the picture-perfect steamed tulips with sunflower seeds, garlic and basil; and the playful mango and galangal ice lolly. A true taste of the season, this is Instagramworthy food if ever we saw it.
What’s your signature dish? I would say my salmon gravlax, which we have on the menu currently – it is simplicity at its finest, showcasing just the best, quality produce in an uncomplicated way. I served this dish to the Swedish royal family during a gala dinner on their visit to London earlier this year, so it feels extra special to me now. What do you cook on your days off? I have to be honest, when I’m at home I go for quick, easy meals. I especially like one pot dishes to save on the washing up! My current favourite is a Thai curry with chicken and lots of vegetables – really easy to make but packed with sweet and spicy flavours. Best meal you’ve ever eaten? My best and most memorable meal was at Le Pré Catelan in Paris. Start to finish, everything was perfect, from the service and atmosphere to every single dish and drink that was put in front of me. Guilty food pleasure? I really love a nice burger. It has it all for me – a quality meat patty cooked to pink perfection, crunchy lettuce, dirty sauce and a brioche bun. What should no kitchen be without? It’s not fancy, but the best gadget in my kitchen is a little £2 Ikea whisk. It’s so useful and is such a versatile piece of equipment. Many of the chefs I have worked with over the years have also invested in the same whisk after I have raved about it so much! What’s the last thing you cooked? Last night I was working in the restaurant, and I spent time on the garnishing section, so it would have been the garnish for our new monkfish dish: cracked wild wheat, braised gem lettuce and brined and grilled king oyster mushrooms. The dish is then completed with a very light and airy carrot sauce.

The best of both worlds
Post-pandemic, more and more London parents are opting for flexible boarding, Elaine Purves, Head of Queen Anne’s School in Berkshire explains why
More and more London families are realising the benefits of flexi boarding

With working parents across the country under more pressure than ever to re-establish their work-life balance post-Covid, many London parents are actively exploring ways to help their family move from ‘surviving’ to ‘thriving’. Boarding schools are responding with gusto, with many now providing extended care and a home-away-from-home in the form of flexible (or ‘flexi’, for those in the know) boarding. At Queen Anne’s School in Berkshire, 50 per cent of pupils attend as day pupils but 50 per cent take up the chance to board in top-notch facilities set in beautiful grounds on the border of the Oxfordshire countryside. Girls aged 11-18 board from as little as two or three nights a week, and the school has seen a rise in popularity for staying at school for the Monday to Friday working week. “We really are on London’s doorstep: Monday morning pick-up points through central London include Chiswick, Kensington and Brentford, and the girls are returned on Friday evening to the same points. There is increasing interest for these services from London families looking to make the best of both the city at the weekends and the country for their child’s education,” says Head of Queen Anne’s, Ms Elaine Purves.
“The school day can be long for our young people, especially when extracurricular activities – everything from sport fixtures to music rehearsals and academic homework to jewellery-making club – are factored in. Of course, having social time to relax and develop friendships with peers is all-important, too. It makes sense for many to reclaim their travel time and stay overnight with their Boarding House families for at least part of the week,” Elaine continues. ‘Fun’ comes up a lot when talking with pupils about their experiences of boarding – the school’s Houseparents go above and beyond to balance downtime with a programme of activities ranging from fire-pits and stargazing to cricket matches and pizza nights. Caitlin in Year 9 says: “One of our favourite activities that we do is the Mocktail Night. We all get together, make a variety of drinks, chat, and just have a great time. What we absolutely love about boarding is that there is a great sense of community. Everyone is so inclusive and there is always someone to talk to. The way the House is run really makes it feel like a second home with all your friends around you.” While fun is a big part of the appeal for the girls, there are benefits for parents, too. “For us it is weekly boarding perfection, Amelie gets to sleep in her bed and enjoy her Sunday night at home before the school bus collects her from our road at 6.20am,” says Queen Anne’s parent Julia Colls. And then there is the positive impact flexi boarding has on the girls’ development. Victoria Edwards, mother of Annabel in Year 7 explains: “We went from being anxious parents worried about our first-born going to boarding school, to being extremely proud of the grown up, caring, yet fiercely independent girl she has become in a short time at QAS.” Find out more about Flexible Boarding options at Queen Anne’s Open Morning on Saturday 17 September. Doing Santorini in style Picture whitewashed villages perched on the cliff face, pristine white sand beaches lapped by calm aquamarine waters and some of the world’s most spectacular sunsets – it’s easy to see why Santorini is so in demand with stylish sunseekers. And this summer the Greek island got a little more desirable, with the opening of Nobu Hotel Santorini. The group’s first venture in Greece brings with it the brand’s understated luxury flair coupled with their customary levels of service, as well as a new sea-facing dining destination – the country’s very first Nobu Restaurant, no less. The kitchen here will be overseen by executive chef Ricardo Marin, who has already been on the brand’s culinary frontline in key destinations like Shoreditch, London and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Situated on the island’s mesmerising northeast coast in Imerovigli, on the route of the famed Oia to Fira hiking trail, the boutique hotel features just 25

This summer sees the relaunch of ÀNI Private Resorts, the world’s first collection of private resorts. Named from the Swahili word andjani, meaning path ahead, ÀNI offers ‘unscripted journeys’ at exclusive retreats in the most beautiful and far-flung corners of the earth, from the Caribbean to Southeast Asia. Each of the four ÀNI destinations – in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Anguilla and Dominican Republic – is designed exclusively for a single group of guests, accommodating up to 30 across 10 to 15 suites. The exquisite design at each property uses local materials, with a focus on expansive outside-in living, and it goes without saying that the views are exceptional. The unique concept allows guests to experience unrivalled levels of privacy and personalised service. And because stays are all inclusive, every dining experience, spa treatment, activity and tailored excursion can be enjoyed at no additional cost. The resort teams get to know each guest ahead of arrival and then tailor their service accordingly – though it is always discreet, sensitive and most of all, heartfelt. Founded by arts patron Tim Reynolds, the company runs alongside nonprofit ÀNI Art Academies, which offer an art skills education to aspiring local artists in each of the destinations, at absolutely no personal cost. Guests are encouraged to visit the academies during their stay.
“Saint Tropez offers cool creds in abundance. There are so many options when it comes to where to stay, but L’Hôtel des Lices is a favourite. It has been around for over half a century but has recently undergone a sensational refurbishment by interior designer David Granata. Meanwhile, slightly out of town, La Réserve Ramatuelle offers a luxurious spa escape. Since its debut twenty years ago, Nikki Beach Saint Tropez has become the go-to for international jetsetters and celebrities. Chilled Champagne, innovative dining experiences, fantastic DJs and incredible events come together here to create a truly wonderful place to while away the summer days, but if you can drag yourself away, there’s lots more to see locally. Don’t miss a stroll through the old town, where the cobbled streets are lined with designer boutiques selling clothes, shoes, art, antiques and dazzling jewellery. If you’re feeling energetic, the Sentier du Littoral is a breathtaking coastal path. It extends from the old quarter of La Ponche all the way to the Plage des Salins, a glorious pine-shaded cove. Alternatively, take a stroll to Chapelle SainteAnne, where Bianca and Mick Jagger were married. It’s a gorgeous, peaceful spot, offering panoramic views of Saint Tropez. I recommend lunch at legendary Club 55 – it’s a little different these days to the beach shack where Brigitte Bardot and the crew ate while filming And God Created Woman. For a typically Provençal experience come dinner time, try Les Moulins de Ramatuelle. Enjoy an aperitif in the spectacular garden while playing pétanque before tucking into a feast of authentic Mediterranean food. Finally, if you’re visiting this month, check out Jazz à Ramatuelle. The legendary annual festival is sponsored by Nikki Beach, and celebrates its 37th anniversary this year. Not to be missed.

UNDER THE SICILIAN SUN
Hidden away from the hordes, these luxurious Sicilian sanctuaries are strictly for those in the know WORDS by PENNY CLEMENTS
T
he first glimpse of Sicily from the aeroplane window takes my breath away. Sitting just off the shores of southern Italy, in the middle of the brilliantly shimmering Mediterranean Sea, its mosaic of undulating hills, covered with olive groves and vineyards is dizzyingly beautiful. It is easy to see why this little isle has been luring travellers for centuries; the warm weather and many hours of sunshine make Sicily one of the most popular year-round destinations in Europe. And, while the beaches are the stuff of holiday dreams, a trip inland is rewarding, too. This is a part of Italy that will satisfy most travellers’ desires – from the exquisite, farm-fresh cuisine to the island’s stimulating culture, and spectacular scenery, there is something for everyone. Arriving at Catania airport in the early afternoon, we are warmly greeted and ushered into a waiting air-conditioned private transfer. And before we know it, we are whizzing through the Sicilian countryside. While the scenery is stunning, the agitated Sicilian drivers take some getting used to, but as we pull onto the long, quiet driveway of Casale degli Erei, everything feels delightfully calm. We’re welcomed by the sight of prickly pear fields, Italian cypress trees, and
pockets of perfectly farmed land, beautifully lit in the sunshine. Situated on a working farm in San Michele di Ganzaria in the Catania region of Sicily, this beautiful, traditional villa with its pretty stone courtyard is one of a collection of 70 meticulously selected properties across the island offered by Villatravellers. Boasting nine en suite bedrooms set across the main building and guest house, it can sleep an impressive 17 guests. And it has facilities that would be the envy of most hotels: a spa fully equipped with hydro-massage pool, jacuzzi, sauna, Turkish bath, and chromotherapy shower. There’s even a private chapel, making this an appealing spot for an intimate wedding. Set in multiple acres of privately owned land in the heart of the Sicilian countryside, this quiet little retreat offers the ultimate mix of luxury and rustic charm. I am staying in one of the comfortable rooms in the guest house, located just steps away from the main house, it is decked out in Mediterranean-inspired colours. And like the rest of the property, it has been decorated with intriguing paintings and antique objects. Indeed, the main house is a veritable treasure trove of historic finds, lending it authentic soul that fits perfectly with the traditional setting.
Villatravellers prides itself on offering the most sensational villas in the very best locations across the island, and this is complimented by a range of guided trips and authentic experiences that offer a taste of the real Sicily

TRAVEL
While there is plenty to keep adventurers happy on the island – from visiting the majestic Mount Etna and UNESCO World Heritage sites of Sicily, to wine tasting and cultural tours (all of which can be booked through Villatravellers) – we are more than happy to spend our days soaking up the facilities on offer at the house. There is no scene here, just guaranteed calm; this is a place to disappear. We happily hop into our swimsuits and spend our days lolling around in the glistening outdoor swimming pool and very slowly moving between the sun-drenched terrace and the communal living rooms of the main house, which offer respite when the sun is high and hot. We are reluctant to drag ourselves away come dinnertime, so Villatravellers come to the rescue one evening with a luxurious private chef dining experience, served al fresco under the stars. Maria and her husband blow us away with their farm-to-table-cooking. We dine on homemade pasta lovingly served in the villa’s handmade white ceramic bowls. Everything is made with the finest, locally sourced ingredients and washed down with Casale degli Erei’s very own wine. It is difficult to imagine a more idyllic place for a hard-earned escape from it all – and it is hard earned, luxury like this does not come cheap. But there’s no doubt that it is money well spent, and we are reluctant to move on when the time comes.
An hour’s drive from Palermo airport, and a short distance from the buzzy coastal town of Cefalù, our second island home is in Santo Stefano di Camastra, in the north of Sicily. We’ve seen the pictures, and are expecting great things, but we are not quite prepared for the beauty and size of our second Villatravellers property. Il Borgo del Barone lies high up in the green hills, overlooking the deep blue Mediterranean. The magnificent villa can sleep 14 across two separate wings and is set in an immaculately restored 17th century stone baglio. While the exterior remains true to the building’s origins, there are surprises to be found inside. The dramatic entrance hall, featuring concrete floors, stone arches and towering ceilings

sets the tone – architecturally sleek, it could not be more different to Casale degli Erei, where the emphasis is very much on the traditional. Here, the design is modern, but the combination of natural materials used perfectly reflects the surrounding landscape, and the owners have shown the greatest respect to the building’s history – the villa features some jawdropping details, like the original ancient olive press wheel, the preserved storage room, and the quirkily upcycled furniture. The restoration has been beautifully orchestrated, and everything here has been artfully designed. The interiors are rich and minimalist; adorned with luxurious linens and custom-designed furnishings, every room and suite feels special. A pared-back, neutral colour palette runs through the entire villa, from the lounge area and study to the dining room and abundant chill out areas. The design, including vast glass walls that let in oodles of light, and the layout, have been conceived to allow maximum enjoyment of the spectacular views, though these are best enjoyed from the large villa length balcony. As different as Villa Il Borgo del Barone is, it is still very much a place for low gears and downtime. We bask poolside on the comfortable loungers, and kick back in the shaded gazebo and charming inner courtyard, spending our evenings cooking up Italian feasts in the vast, well-equipped kitchen. Our experience here is so superlative that it goes without saying that I want to stay for much, much longer than the allotted holiday allows. Our time in Sicily has made it abundantly clear that Villatravellers’ exceptional fivestar villas offer the ultimate way to experience the island – traditional or modern, countryside or coastal, whichever you choose, you won’t want to leave. Summerill & Bishop’s design ethos is a simple one: to bring people together around a table. Their range of exquisitely crafted linens and tableware certainly boasts some conversation starters, including La Piscine, the latest in the brand’s whimsical summer offering. Comprising 100 per cent pure linen napkins and rectangular tablecloths, the pieces are printed with an eye-catching image of rippling sunlit water, awarding our outdoor tablescaping schemes a dynamic backdrop.
A GLASS ACT
If you’re a sucker for pretty packaging, you’ll love One Gin’s new glass bottle, designed to be repurposed as a beautiful water carafe once we’ve swilled our last glass of award-winning sage-infused gin – simply remove the labels. Intricately etched with an art deco-inspired butterfly motif, and finished with an embossed wooden topper, it makes a stylish statement. In partnership with The One Foundation, at least 10 per cent of profits are used to fund lifechanging, sustainable water programmes in the world’s poorest communities, too. Chin-chin!

CELEBRATING SUSTAINABILITY
IT’S AN INTERIORS BUZZWORD, BUT REAL SUSTAINABILITY – NOT JUST THE PERFORMATIVE KIND – CAN BE FOUND IF YOU DIG A LITTLE DEEPER. HERE, WE CELEBRATE THE BRANDS THAT GO THE EXTRA MILE TO BE PLANET-KIND. WORDS by ALI HOWARD
MAIE Founded in 2021, this young design studio aims to empower mindful consumption in interiors. Coinciding with the recent opening of a Notting Hill pop-up, the brand’s launch product is The Coffee Table (above), a sleek and contemporary sculptural statement, which is fashioned from natural stone and made up of two sharp-angled pieces. In keeping with MAIE’s slow living philosophy, the tables are made-to-order, crafted locally, and produced with minimum waste – expect to receive some beautiful home accessories repurposed from offcuts with your order. From £1,890 (maieliving.com)
REVOLUTION OF FORMS This online shop is the brainchild of Raffaella Goffredi, whose passion for crafted objects was further cemented during an inspiring trip to Mexico in which the designer met with talented artisans. The brand sources ceramics, glassware, textiles, and home accessories produced from natural or recycled materials and made with traditional techniques that do no harm to the environment or the maker. London-based ceramicist, Lucia Ocejo has created a series of bespoke vessels for the brand. Titled Earth and Water, the range explores her nomadic trajectory, using British techniques while honouring her Mexican heritage. From £280(revolutionofforms.co) L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G

INTERIORS Dhurrie rugs are slim and lightweight presenting a firm, resistant and knotless surface, which makes them clean and easy to maintain.
NANIMARQUINA Re-Rug is a new collection of chic, homely carpets fashioned from the mountains of leftover wool generated from Nanimarquina’s suppliers. Committed to offering more sustainable rugs, the brand worked closely with their artisan makers to produce a recycled yarn suitable for weaving. Each Re-Rug, made with the handloomed dhurrie technique, uses one kilogram per square metre of reprocessed wool, which has been shredded, mixed, and colour matched. This directly helps to reduce unmanaged waste, and with no virgin materials used in producing the yarn, the brand is offsetting its carbon footprint with reduced CO2 emissions. From £1,240 (nanimarquina.com)
ETHICAL BEDDING A brand that wears its eco-credentials on its sleeve, Ethical Bedding aims to make a positive impact on the environment with 100 per cent organic sheets, duvets and pillows crafted from eucalyptus silk, a luxurious vegan alternative and one that’s reassuringly Earth-kind: the eucalyptus trees are grown in biodiverse, FSC-protected forests, using 95 per cent less water than cotton. But the focus isn’t only on materials. The brand is partnered with The Vegan Society and WWF, and is part of 1% For The Planet, meaning at least one per cent of Ethical Bedding’s annual revenue goes to global sustainability initiatives. From £29 (ethicalbedding.com)
ABIGAIL EDWARDS This renowned wallpaper designer revisits her signature Seascape design with a new environmentally friendly collection, Eco. Edwards’ calming, hand-drawn wave pattern now comes in a non-woven substrate made from 99 per cent renewable raw materials. Not only that, but polyethylene fibres have been replaced with renewable, plant-based fibres, meaning the wallpaper can now be recycled along with our food and garden waste and turned into compost when it comes to the end of its life. Choose from three nature-inspired colourways: Moonlight, Midnight, and Solstice. £103 per roll (abigailedwards.com) The authentic pieces in TOAST’s House & Home collection come complete with makers’ marks
TOAST It may be a big name in fashion and interiors but there’s not a whiff of mass production in TOAST’s offering. In fact, the brand has sustainability at its heart, with a long-term commitment to supporting traditional crafts and techniques, collaborating with like-minded artisans, mills and weavers from around the world. True to form, the new House & Home collection features intricately hand-stitched Kantha quilts, arty screen-printed textiles, and rustic earthenware complete with organic makers’ marks. DICK & ANGEL STRAWBRIDGE We catch up with the stars of Channel 4’s Escape to the Chateau and their French fairy tale of a renovation project, namely the 19th-century Château de la MotteHusson in Martigné-sur-Mayenne WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by IAN WALLACE AND TWO RIVERS MEDIA/CHATEAU TV
The Chateau could be described as the ultimate do-er upper. Now that you’ve had more than a few years to settle in, what would you say were your biggest successes on the DIY front? A: With a building of this age and size, naturally there are a great many challenges, so even the smallest successes are moments to be proud of. On the largest scale, replacing the roof and rendering the entire Chateau was incredibly worthwhile as it means our children, Arthur and Dorothy, will not have to do it in their lifetime. Dick adores the Walled Garden; it’s really been a labour of love that has given us a lot of joy, as well as sustenance. On a design level, the wallpaper museum is one of my first and proudest moments. Finding all the original off-cuts in the attic was just magic for me! And the toughest learning curves? A: I think on a project like this, you just expect them, so in fact, when you get a set-back, or can’t get hold of something, you change direction! What advice would you give to someone wanting to take on a project like this? D: Do it… but plan ahead! We cannot stress this enough. We’re both advocates for ‘giving it a go’ but the key is always in the planning. Consider the tools you need if you’ve doing the work yourself and do some research into the best method and execution. Use an expert for the things you really need help with, and don’t cut corners – this can end up costing time and money. For bigger projects, a budget is really important. Costs can escalate wildly, so plan a contingency for the unexpected. How did you combine your skills as engineer and designer in making over the property? D: We complement each other very well. We are both doers and our combined skills and interests mean we’re able to take on a great many tasks and make things happen. This is something we don’t take for granted and we know how lucky we are to have such

a partnership. When undertaking an interior design project, it’s usually Angel who comes up with the creative concept and I work out how we are going to make it happen on a practical level. We both get stuck in with the tougher jobs. In the early days when we first bought the Chateau it was often just the two of us doing everything. Can you tell me a little bit about the role of sustainability and self-sufficiency at the Chateau? A: Dick is really passionate about living sustainably. This is something he’s lived and breathed for decades, and of course has influenced every decision we make. From top to bottom and in everyday life, it’s part of what we do. From the way we heat the Chateau, to the installation, to how we try and re-use pre-loved furniture and materials and buy quality that will last and not end up in landfill… Dick also tried, where possible, to include our Walled Garden is his sanctuary; it’s absolutely thriving and this year’s harvest was bountiful. We very much follow the cycle of the seasons and as well as fruit and veg, we have chickens, geese, and have reared turkeys and pigs! How would you describe your interiors style? (And are you always in agreement over it?) A: Eclectic but homely. First and foremost, the Chateau is our home and everything has been designed around working for us as family, as well as reflecting our taste and love of old things. Every room in the Chateau has a story and is a reflection of us. Dick is generally quite happy for me to get on and design the interiors. In such a sprawling property with so many rooms, would you say that your work is ever finished or is it a constantly evolving project? How do you deal with the enormity of it? A: We’re not sure the Chateau will ever be finished! We have done a lot but then you notice something else and think, “must add that to the list!”. The potential of what we can do next is what we love about it. Dick always says, “you eat an elephant one bite at a time”. At some point, you never know, Arthur and Dorothy may take over. Arthur is a true gourmand and has dreams of running a restaurant from here, so watch this space!

Tell me about your furniture choices. Where do you shop? A: So many places! France has incredible brocantes and flea markets full of treasure. We go to Emmaus shops a lot and have sourced many wonderful items there. They are all over France and are a brilliant charity. We’ve also found some amazing things on eBay, including our barge, Le Bateau at the Chateau, which we renovated to accommodate guests, and Le Van du Vin, now a bar for all our events! Talk me through a few of your favourite pieces A: We have a Victorian penny machine in the Salon, which I adore, as well as lots of original fairground signage. Most of this came from the UK. My very old pineapple light that lives in the entrance hall came from America via eBay. Dick had to re-wire it just before our wedding! And we love our faux taxidermy pieces – the unicorn, giraffe, zebra and wolf – which were handmade by our friends Broken Hare in Wales. Favourite thrifty finds/family heirlooms? What’s the story? D: It’s a hard one because we have a Chateau full of them! We love history and the Chateau is like a living museum. Many of the
1
treasures we’ve discovered here, like an old musket, side saddle and a sword, have been given pride of place in one of the turrets, called the ‘Tower of Curiosity’ so family, friends and visitors can see some of the Chateau’s history being brought back to life. Which is your favourite room, and why? D: In the Chateau, it’s probably the Sou-Sol, the basement. I have my kitchens down there, the preserve cupboard, and it’s the heart of house. A special memory for me was when my Big Boy James (eldest son) came over. James, Arthur and I all spent the afternoon cooking together in the professional kitchen.
The Chateau product range includes homeware, gifts and accessories all inspired by the 19th century property, while Dick and Angel’s latest book Living the Chateau Dream is now out in paperback, priced £9.99
What are you working on at the moment? A: We’re back filming for a new series of Escape to the Chateau, which is really exciting and there are some interesting projects at the Chateau that we can’t wait to share with everyone. I’m busy designing and working on The Chateau Collections and in amongst all our ventures we’re looking forward to lots of family time over the summer holidays – the kids are growing up so fast! thechateau.tv

THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION
Online learning, digital learning, remote learning, blended learning and ed tech… just some of the words that have been used to describe education across the world in recent years. While others rushed to adapt, Pearson have a long established reputation in virtual schools and online learning
T
he transition to online learning ended up happening at a much faster pace than anyone who works in education could have ever imagined, primarily due to the pandemic and the forced need for schools, colleges and universities to restructure their educational programmes. Whilst ‘online learning’ will be a key part of education moving forward, there are some fundamental differences between this method of teaching and learning, and educational programmes that have been specifically designed for a purpose-built online school. When done well, online learning can be as effective as learning in a traditional brickand-mortar classroom, say the team at Pearson. There are over 110,000 students across the world using Pearson Online Classroom to power their learning. Students at Pearson Online Academy UK and US, Connections Academy and Harrow School Online understand that the structure of learning in an online school is noticeably different. At Pearson Online Academy and Harrow School Online, the flipped classroom approach increases student engagement and

encourages critical thinking. Proven technology enables students to study from home, progressing through interactive self-study materials to develop an understanding of subject content before joining LiveLessons® in virtual classrooms with expert teachers and their fellow students across the world. By encouraging students to work through materials independently at a time and pace that suits them, and by using technology that generates deep insights about their learning, teachers can
tailor lessons to the specific support or challenge requirements of the students in their class, with additional time freed up for them to work with individuals during one-to-one sessions. In contrast to online learning, being part of an online school requires the provision of an all-round education. In addition to their rigorous and inspiring academic experience and extracurricular pursuits in sports, the arts, community service and academic enrichment, Pearson online school students engage in activities that develop their leadership skills, perfect their English communication, build relationships and allow them to serve their global and local communities. Empowering students to achieve academic excellence whilst supporting them to pursue their passions alongside peers from other countries means that online schools, like Pearson Online Academy UK and US, and Harrow School Online, are able to create a global campus in which students broaden their understanding of different cultures and build an international network of friends. alternatives. “One of our students has got a degree apprenticeship with Goldman Sachs, with a guaranteed job at the end,” he says. “We also had a student last year who went straight to an apprenticeship at Google. The advantage is that you’re earning a living without getting saddled with debt. And it’s good for universities to have some competition.” So with the options growing, how can parents help their child make the right choice? Sean has these tips: 1 Start early. The sooner you start sharing information and discussing your child’s options, the better informed they’ll be. 2 Encourage them to explore the subjects they’re interested in beyond the A-level curriculum. This “supercurricular” work could involve reading journals, watching YouTube videos, shadowing someone or doing online work experience. 3 Let them choose what’s right for them, not you. An ex-polytechnic may not be your first choice, but if it’s one of the best places in the country for what your child wants to study, employers in that niche will look there first for prospective employees. What’s more, if your child has made their own decision, they’ll be intrinsically motivated and far more likely to succeed. 4 Encourage them to develop the characteristics universities and employers look for: reliability, a positive attitude and the ability to work independently. Ashbourne operates like a halfway house between school and university; if a student doesn’t have a lesson until 11am, they don’t have to come in. The freedom can go to their heads a bit at first, but they soon learn if they fall behind!
THOUGHT
WHY UNIVERSITY NEEDN’T BE UNIVERSAL Neither the high costs, nor the shift to online learning during the pandemic, seem to have deterred young people from going to university. In September 2021, a record-breaking 37.9 per cent of 18-year-olds in the UK were due to take up places. For Sean Pillai, a head of sixth form at Ashbourne College, their enthusiasm is understandable. “Unis are very
exciting places, full of ambitious young people with diverse views,” he says. “You don’t get the same spontaneous challenges and in-person interactions if you’re sitting at your computer at home.” That said, as Sean points out, the majority of young people still don’t go to university. And increasing numbers of Ashbourne students are opting for

What attracted you to the school? I was excited by its positive ethos and the opportunity it gave me to explore bilingual and bi-cultural education within a forwardthinking British environment. How would you sum it up in a sentence? A warm, happy learning environment that celebrates the language, culture and heritage of both the UK and China. What makes it different? It is the only school in Europe that provides a fully immersive bilingual primary education, with 50 per cent of the curriculum delivered in Mandarin and the rest in English. How would you describe the atmosphere? A nurturing and dynamic learning environment that celebrates intellectual curiosity and opportunities to explore interests and passions. Collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. What’s your personal educational ethos? ‘Happy children learn’ is my motto, combined with a passionate belief that kindness is free. How do you balance your extracurricular activities with the academics? Our extra-curricular activities complement the opportunities and skills developed in the school day. We offer everything from traditional clubs such as football, tennis, drama and chess, to programmable robotics, Chinese calligraphy and karate. What did the pandemic teach you about education? That children love to learn and that the smallest things can engage them. It also highlighted that they thrive when they have contact with peers, and the opportunity for this via online live learning sessions was essential. One child, who was in lockdown abroad, joined a lesson while being driven to the airport, such was her enthusiasm to stay connected! Warwick Road, W14 (020 3096 2888; kensingtonwade.com)

GET SET FOR SEPTEMBER: YOUR PARENTING SUMMER HOLIDAY GUIDE
How can you use the six weeks of the summer holidays to best prepare your child for the ‘back to school’ milestone? Successful north London school group, North Bridge House shares their top tips
T
he school summer holidays: six weeks of planning childcare and entertainment, juggling work and an overflowing laundry basket, and somehow getting set for the new academic year in September. Whether your child is taking those emotional first steps to nursery, making the move from nursery to ‘big school’, or starting out at secondary school, it’s likely that you will be concerned with buying their uniform, establishing their routine, trialling the school run and preparing them emotionally and developmentally. Summer camps are saviours Not only do they provide working parents with childcare solutions and single parents with the opportunity to run a comb through their hair, but summer camps are a great way to develop social skills and extra-curricular interests ahead of your child starting school. At North Bridge House, families starting the Nursery & Pre-Prep in September are able to join the much-loved NBH Holiday Club, while those higher up the school have priority places at the external camps run on site. The New to North Bridge programme – a series of settling in events which take place in the academic year prior to entry – also initiates friendships between children and parents, presenting the opportunity to connect and have play dates over the summer holidays. “This is a great way for parents to prepare themselves for September – starting school can be a daunting experience for them too,” says North Bridge House Nursery & Pre-Prep Head, Eilish Sleator. “It is an emotional and unknown experience for first time parents and going through the process with other parents in your child’s class is refreshingly reassuring. And opportunities for your child to socialise
in, and kids are generally a lot more invested in how they look. Liberal schools like North Bridge House will also have a gender-neutral uniform, so take the time to go through the options with your child and ensure they have picked out the items they will feel most comfortable in.
are so important in helping them to develop empathy and kindness towards others, as well as improving their confidence and communication skills,” she continues. Hammer home the importance of homework… … metaphorically speaking! “The summer holidays are important downtime for your child, and they should not feel bogged down by the curriculum they are yet to start, nor do they need to know their times tables off by heart before any member of their future class,” Brendan Pavey, Executive Headteacher of North Bridge House reminds us. However, come September and their first piece of homework, they will be all the more motivated to complete it if you have created a special homework station over the summer. Whether it’s in the corner of the home office or in the conservatory, get the tools out of the garage and, together with your child, build a super cool, grown-up homework space, equipped with a desk and shelves, a picture of their pet and a stash of epic new stationery. Some fairy lights and a colourful chair could make it all the more a place they want to be rather than have to be. And having a dedicated space for your child to work will improve their focus come that first assignment.
Journalling is your best friend “Transition booklets are something we find very useful here at North Bridge House – creating one is a cathartic opportunity for children to visually represent and process their transition, including photos and descriptions of previous and new settings, teachers and friends to look through over the summer,” says Michelle Blaber, Headteacher of North Bride House Pre-Prep, Hampstead. Making an ‘All About Me’ booklet or summer journal is also a creatively beneficial exercise; it’s something children can share with their new teachers and classmates in September and will keep them occupied over the holiday. Open up the conversation “Starting a new school or moving up a year can feel like a big leap for children and there is no better way to normalise their feelings and settle any apprehension than by talking,” says Tom Le Tissier, North Bridge House Prep School Head. By opening up dialogue about our children’s transition, we nudge them towards retrospection, which encourages both resilience and enthusiasm for the next step. Schools that are part of educational wellbeing communities and platforms like North Bridge House will have access to a wealth of parent resources, to prompt and support these conversations; make the most of the tools on offer to promote your child’s mental health and don’t be afraid to seek further advice from the school. To find out more about the schools in the group, see northbridgehouse.com
Don’t buy secondary school uniform too big “Adolescence is a challenging time for children and with it can come concerns over image and experimenting with identity,” says North Bridge House Senior Canonbury Headteacher, Charlotte Tassell-Dent. Kids do not want a blazer two sizes too big because you said they would grow into it. (An oversized school hoodie however is much more on trend!). While respecting the uniform rules and encouraging your child to take pride in their appearance and representation of the school, allow them to be as confident in their uniform as possible. Starting a new school comes with the anxieties of making new friends and wanting to fit

TUTORING YOU CAN TRUST Attitudes to online education provision have changed dramatically in recent years, and the quality of teaching and resources has never been better, making online tutoring an excellent option, says Harrow School Online
A
s the world has changed dramatically over the last two years, so have attitudes and feelings around online learning, this is also true for Online Tutoring. Tutoring has traditionally always been focused on face-to-face delivery, but a recent survey by Bramble has shown that there has been a shift in attitude towards the adequacy of remote education. 84 per cent of students surveyed said they found online provisions more effective than, or as effective as, the in-person alternative and 75 per cent of parents, tutors and organisations declared it to be at least as effective as in-person tutoring. This suggests that the education community is quickly adapting to the use of innovative technologies and that it is open to exploring new digital ways of teaching and learning. Harrow School Online believes that virtual learning can and does provide a complete school experience with a wide range of benefits, a belief that is corroborated by recent research findings, too. When asked about the main benefits of online learning, tutors, students and parents were quite unanimous in the benefits they shared and agreed on.

MEET THE LOCALS
Zoe Roberts founder ButterNut of London
As a born and bred Londoner I’ve lived in all corners of this city, but there is nowhere I have felt more at home than in this quiet, leafy neighbourhood, with its tree-lined boulevards, Regency era white painted stucco houses and the idyllic meandering fork of the Grand Union Canal. Taking full advantage of the central-ish location here, I start my day with a workout. For long runs I head south to Hyde Park and a lap of the Serpentine, while for sprints I head to the 400m track at Padding Rec. The drop-in sessions at the old school All Stars Boxing Gym on the Harrow Road keep me fighting fit. A table in the sun at the newly opened Bondi Green, by the canal outside Paddington station is my go-to for a relaxed business meeting over coffee and the tastiest Lamingtons in town. A secret spot for lunch known only to locals is the Grand Junction Café. This unassuming café makes the most delicious sourdough toasted sandwiches. Overseen by the lovely Andree, the staff are friendly, the portions are big and the prices reasonable. Everything is made fresh, so be prepared to wait; it’s worth it. I set up ButterNut of London to bring innovative flavours to the nut butter market. My silky smooth and seriously crunchy varieties have won a bunch of Great Taste awards. Each is handmade in small batches from the finest sustainably sourced ingredients. Our flagship shop is at the worldfamous Borough Market, and we sell online and to lots of lovely independent shops nationwide. The beautiful Flotsam & Jetsam café at Clifton Nurseries is where I love to bring my laptop and spend the afternoon working, surrounded by nature. After staring at the screen too long, a stroll along the canal, weaving in and out of the prams, tourists, and cyclists, helps me clear my mind and refocus. My quiet enjoyment of this tranquil oasis is such a big part of my thinking process that when we redesigned the labels last year, the canals were incorporated. You can spot this homage on my award-winning Smooth Peanut Butter. Before heading home, I pay a visit to the independent shops on Formosa Street to pick up fresh bread, wine, French cheese, charcuterie, and Belgian chocolates. For dinner out in Little Venice it has to be Kateh. This elegant, understated restaurant oozes charm, while the richly flavoured and gorgeously aromatic food transports you to another continent. butter-nut.com

COMMENT
From our agents FABRIC FAVOURITES
Local heroes VENICE LONDON, W9
With interiors as delectable as the cakes they sell, this little coffee shop in the heart of Maida Vale offers a visual treat as much as a sugary one: think plush velvet seating, chic brass accents, and a whole wall of blooming roses. Venice London’s selection of Insta-worthy celebration cakes is of an incredibly high standard, too, with weddings, christenings and birthdays all catered for. “The staff are all extremely helpful and create incredible cakes, offering a hub for locals and visitors to the area, to eat and socialise,” says Ben Haftel from Goldschmidt & Howland.
Dean Whitley, Chancellors
“This area of prime central London is typified by elegant streets of white stucco-fronted houses and traditional red brick mansion blocks, which often back onto extensive, hidden, resident-only communal gardens. Regent’s Canal, which runs through the heart of Little Venice, provides peaceful walks, enchanting canal boats, chic restaurants and waterside pubs.”
14 Clifton Road, W9 (020 7121 0003; venicelondon.co.uk)
THE WATERWAY, W9
As its name suggests, this casually elegant eatery sits canal-side, offering diners a chance to drink in its tranquil surrounds. It’s only fitting, then, to do that with a refreshing summer cocktail in hand, something Stuart Rothstein from Winkworth most certainly approves of: “The Waterway offers delicious food, a great selection of cocktails, and a wonderful location on the canal,” he says. Generous brunch and à la carte menus are pleasingly meat, fish, veggie and vegan friendly. And the Sunday roast, complete with all the trimmings, is a rude-not-to weekend treat.
Paul Bennett, Behr & Butchoff
“Looking westwards down the canal, with elegant period houses on either side, canal boats gently meandering along the waterway, and a glimpse of the basin ahead is my favourite view. The best place to enjoy this picture-perfect scene is the terrace at the back of Cafe Laville, which is located at the Edgware Road entrance to Blomfield Road.”
54 Formosa Street, W9 (020 7266 3557; thewaterway.co.uk)
CLIFTON NURSERIES, W9
A veritable oasis of calm in the Capital, this is London’s oldest and arguably most beautiful garden centre. At its heart is a fairy tale-like glasshouse filled with exotic flowers and house plants – a biophiliac’s dream. Clifton Nurseries also boasts a lovely gift shop, says Alex Fleck from Arlington Residential. “The garden centre is hidden down a passage between elegant period townhouses and is a great place to step away from the city. Some of the staff have been there for years,” she adds. Beyond the potted plants the company also offers garden design and landscaping services.
Steve Kadi, Hamptons
“For an area so close to all the amenities of central London, Maida Vale has been able to retain something of a village feel, with a strong sense of community. The area of Little Venice is a particular haven with its quiet streets, Georgian townhouses and canal views. The market has remained very strong throughout 2022 and we see the market stabilising for the remaining part of this year.”

This month’s hottest properties FOR SALE LITTLE VENICE ESTATE, W9
This is a rare opportunity to purchase an exceptional four-bed abode with planning consent for an additional, adjacent 5,300 sq ft property, buying you the perfect family home with a juicy investment opportunity to boot. The main red brick house was built in 1929 by the esteemed Scottish architect Charles Stanley Peach. Unapologetically opulent, grand period fireplaces are met with sleek internal Crittall doors, while the vast bathroom is clad in floor-to-ceiling marble. The epitome of modern glamour. £17,950,000, Aston Chase (020 7724 4724; astonchase.com)
FOR SALE MAIDA VALE, W9
There’s so much to love about this beautiful Little Venice property, not least its history. The raised ground floor of the four-bed duplex was once a grand banking hall and still retains many of its original architectural features. Access to the commodious, high-ceilinged and open-plan reception is through imposing double doors of the old bank, while a row of stately arched windows offers bags of character. This might be an old financial institution, but the property is nothing if not fresh, light and bright. You’ll be laughing all the way… £3.25 million, Arlington Residential (020 7722 3322; arlingtonresidential.com)
FOR SALE RANDOLPH AVENUE, W9
Those who appreciate a clean contemporary line will be in their element in this three-bed lateral flat, which seamlessly leads onto a fittingly manicured 79 ft private garden. Newly renovated to exacting standards, the apartment boasts its own entranceway, sleek and chic kitchen and bathrooms, and is neutrally decorated to match. But far from clinical, those modern lines are offset with beautiful wood floors and rustic wooden accents in the kitchen. £2.35 million, Winkworth (020 7289 1692; winkworth.co.uk)

If you’re looking for a home that marries the convenience of a central location with the tranquillity of waterside living, this smart new development by St George is just the ticket. Chelsea Creek brings a chic, European vibe to West London with its tree-lined streets and winding waterways. On offer is a selection of one- and two-bed apartments, which have been fitted out to a high specification. Not only that, but lucky residents can get their fill of leisure facilities here, including an indoor swimming pool, sauna, steam room, gymnasium and treatment room at the exclusive sanctuary that is The Spa. Add to that beautifully landscaped courtyards, managed car parking, 24-hour concierge and an enviable selection of shops, bars and restaurants, quite literally, on your doorstep. The dream!
How long have you been in the business? 21 years. If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… an actress. I love London because… it’s my home; it’s diverse, exciting, and has everything except decent weather and sea. First London home? Swiss Cottage. Favourite London street? Mount Street. It’s beautiful in every way. Where do you go for head space in the city? Regent’s Park, every day. It lifts my soul and puts a spring in my step. Best place to grab a coffee in the Capital? Hagen, a cute new place on Marylebone High Street with very friendly baristas. And good, strong coffee! Favourite London restaurant? Ceconni’s for its great food and Lady A rosé. And it’s just about OK noise level wise! Most memorable sale? Sealed bids for a large house, which went to attended exchange. Achieved much higher than we had anticipated.

It’s said August is a quiet month for the property market, but can ASK I use that to my advantage?
THE AGENT
“Even a momentary drop in demand can trigger a dip in prices, but there are local variables to consider. In wealthier areas, people who have holiday homes tend to go away for much longer than the traditional two weeks, so anyone looking to buy a property in July or August will generally face less competition. The market for flat sales is less affected by this as many buyers are younger and do not have children in school. Demand in prime areas will always be high, so there is less price fluctuation, but you are likely to get a better deal if you buy on a busy road, above a shop or beyond walking distance of a train station.” Chris Cooper, Benham & Reeves
