FROM THE EDITOR
Decorating the house has to be one of my favourite moments in the build up to Christmas. We crank up the festive tunes, stir up a batch of mulled wine and get into the festive spirit. If you feel the same, you should love our interiors feature this issue, which is full of tips to ensure that your home is brimming with seasonal sparkle and cheer. And speaking of sparkle, how gorgeous is cover girl Chanel Cresswell? This month sees her playing the role of Colleen Rooney in the TV adaptation of this summer’s libel case between her and fellow footballer’s wife Rebekah Vardy. The part couldn’t be more different to that of Kelly, the skinhead gang member who helped to launch Chanel’s career, winning her a BAFTA in the process. See what she has to say about that, and her hopes for 2023 in our exclusive interview. It’s hard to believe that the New Year is almost upon us – we have some treats in store for you then, but more on that to follow. Until then, have a wonderful Christmas.

WORDS by ALI HOWARD
EXHIBITION Honor Titus: Bourgeoisie In Bloom
Until 14 January, Timothy Taylor
This Brooklyn-born artist is known for his simplistic paintings that often feature flat patches of colour alongside faceless figures in minimal landscapes. Because of this, his work has an eerie quality to it, a sense of isolation and loneliness. Titus’s latest exhibition focuses on themes of ritual, nostalgia and class through depictions of young adults presented to society at debutante and cotillion balls. My Baby’s Breath sees a floating figure in a meringue-like white dress against a backdrop of strict wallpaper stripes, while a female figure seeks solitude on a balcony under a show of fireworks in Shimmering Jubilee. Do yourself a favour this festive period and grab a rare moment of solitude at this Mayfair art space.
15 Bolton Street, W1J (020 7409 3344; timothytaylor.com)
THEATRE
Baghdaddy
Until 17 December, Royal Court Theatre
Jasmine Naziha Jones’ powerful debut was developed as part of an Introduction to Playwriting group at the Royal Court, proving that the theatre’s stance on supporting grassroots drama continues to pay off. For eight-year-old Darlee, the Gulf War rages 3,320 miles away, yet it is right here in her living room, too; in her father’s fears and tears as he attempts, desperately, to phone home. Described as a devastating coming-of-age story, Baghdaddy touches on themes of cultural identity, generational trauma, and father-daughter relationships, all against the backdrop of one of history’s bloodiest conflicts. But it is not short on comic relief, either.
50-51 Sloane Square, SW1W (020 7565 5000; royalcourttheatre.com)
THEATRE
The Fir Tree
15-31 December, Globe Theatre
One to warm your cockles: the Globe will transform into a magical forest for Hans Christian Andersen’s festive fairy tale. Michelle Terry, the theatre’s artistic director takes the helm in this timely retelling by Globe resident writer Hannah Khalil. Open to all ages, we’re promised an immersive experience including carol-singing and tree decorating (mulled wine or hot chocolate in hand), while kids can meet friendly handmade puppets and are even encouraged to make and bring their own. All we need now is a clear sky and a starry night to ensure the ultimate in Christmassy wholesomeness.

“The last thing we wanted to do was to make these people into caricatures – what you see in the newspapers, that is not who these people are,” Chanel Cresswell tells me when we sit down to talk about the upcoming Channel 4 adaptation of the libel case between Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy. Chanel plays Coleen in Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama, which also stars Michael Sheen and Natalia Tena and will be on screens this month – it is a remarkable turnaround when you consider that the court proceedings, the talk of social media this summer, only concluded at the end of July.
“It all happened really quickly,” Chanel agrees. “I remember getting a phone call originally asking me to do the audition, and thinking, oh my God, they’re actually going to make this into a story. I was quite surprised really, but obviously it had captured the nation’s interest. Literally within two weeks we were flying out to Budapest, to film. The speed with which production started was crazy – even if we did want to reach out to the people we were playing, we just didn’t have time. It all happened very quickly.”
The production uses the actual court transcripts, so the dialogue is completely true to life, but Chanel’s portrayal of Coleen’s characteristics required a little more thought. “When you play a character that nobody knows, it is your interpretation, and you are allowed that artistic licence to create the character you want. But with somebody like Coleen Rooney, everybody has their own interpretation of this person,” she tells me. “I have been seeing her on the cover of magazines since I was little, but I’ve never met her, and she doesn’t do much in the way of public interviews, so there’s not much material out there. I didn’t follow the trial at the time, and I am glad that I hadn’t, because I was coming in with an unbiased opinion.”
So, how did she go about preparing for the role? “You have to think, OK, let’s look at this person – what makes them tick, what characteristics can you play,” she explains. “The one thing that
I thought was, don’t think about stereotypes, don’t think of her as a WAG – what is her family like? What is her background like? Where has she come from? What has she been through in her life? What struggles has she had? She is a very loyal, strong person, and that became apparent very quickly – loyalty is everything to her. She has a very strong family unit behind her, and friends. So, this court case was about more than somebody leaking her personal information, it meant more to her than that.”
No matter how much preparation went into the role, there was still so much guesswork involved that I wonder if Chanel is feeling nervous about how Coleen might perceive her portrayal. “Yes, massively,” she laughs. “I don’t know how to elaborate on that other than to say that I am definitely apprehensive.”
The perfectly groomed footballer’s wife is a far cry from Chanel’s first role, that of skinhead Kelly in This is England – a part that threw her into the spotlight at the age of just 15, in 2006. Revealing how the job came about, Chanel tells me: “I was in the Television Workshop, which was a workshop for kids who probably didn’t have the means or the resources to go to drama school. I had auditioned to get in when I was 11 and got a place. Then, a few years after that there was a director, Shane Meadows, who was very heavily linked to the workshop, and he came down because he was casting this film. We were all really excited, because we’d heard that he was a really big director. I remember walking down to the audition and there were just so many people that there weren’t even enough chairs for us all to sit down. I had to sit on my friend’s knee,” she recalls. “And I remember thinking, there is just no way on God’s earth that he is going to look over at me; there are just too many people here. So, I just sat back and kind of gave up on the idea, because there were so many kids there. And then at the end, somebody came up and told me that he really, really liked me and wanted to re-call me. And then, before I knew it, I had been offered the job. They said, ‘Yeah, you’ll probably

have to shave all your hair off’. And I was like, ‘Yeah, course!’. Little did I know they weren’t kidding – a few weeks later I was in a hairdresser getting all of my hair shaved off,” she laughs.
The film was so well received that a spin-off TV series, This is England ’86, was commissioned, and that was followed by two further sequels. “It paved the way for my career,” Chanel tells me. “I had no idea how big it was going to be. And I am kind of glad in a way; the naivety was probably a blessing in disguise.” Indeed, it meant that she walked onto the set on her first day armed with the bravado of the young and none of the nerves that come handin-hand with experience.
Recalling that day, she says: “Me and my best friend would watch Snatch on repeat on the DVD player. And I remember walking into the Broadway Cinema in Nottingham when they had got all of the final gang together, and Stephen Graham was there, and I remember ringing her up and going, ‘Oh my God, Tommy, The Tit’s here, Tommy, The Tit’s here out of Snatch!’ And she was like ‘No!’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, he’s in it, he plays Combo!’ I was just so excited to work with him.”
Though she has gone on to play a huge variety of roles since, Chanel tells me that Kelly will always hold a special place in her heart. “I have played so many different roles – I have been very lucky – and I have loved every role I have played, I really have,” she tells me. “I look back on them and it’s like having loads of children. But the one character who I really do have a connection with is Kelly. I have always felt very protective of her. When we were doing This is England ’90 and there was speculation about how bad things were going to get for Kelly, and whether she would actually survive, I remember Shane sitting me down and talking me through this awful path she was on. And I literally just broke down and I was like, ‘Oh my God, you can’t do this’. I was really heartbroken.”
Though heart wrenching, that particular storyline was responsible for Chanel winning a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress; it was an unforgettable time. “It was like I was in a bubble. I took my sister with me, and we had these great days together in London. I had my dress fitting on Bond Street in Escada – it was all just so surreal,” Chanel recalls. “I remember when I was on the red carpet before, and I was just feeling so lucky to be there, my dress
broke. The back was done up with a little clip, and I wasn’t wearing a bra, so I really needed this dress to stay put. And it broke, and I just remember looking at my sister in horror. And I had Stephen Graham’s wife trying to safety pin me back in, and it kept pinging back open. And I remember saying, ‘If this is how tonight means to go on, we are screwed!’ But no, I ended up winning…”
Despite the nomination, the award was a big surprise to Chanel. “Everyone in my family had been saying, ‘Chanel, remember that it’s just a bonus that you have even been nominated’,” she tells me. “And then on the night, I sat there with my sister, and I had Shane and Stephen behind me. I remember, my sister looked at me and she went, ‘Chanel, now, you might not win… but if they do read your name out, try to be cool’. I was like, ‘OK, same to you’. And she was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll be cool, you be cool, we’ll both be cool’. The next minute, they read my name out! I was screaming, my sister was screaming. All of that completely went out of the window…” she laughs at the memory.
“It definitely is an achievement, and it is amazing to be able to say that you have won a BAFTA award, and I feel lucky every day that I get to say that I have one of those brass faces at home,” she tells me, though she admits that winning for a role like this can be something of a double-edged sword. “You do have to prove your abilities in other areas. You still have to keep working hard to persuade people that you have the ability to play all kinds of parts. I think it does take a few years for things to settle down. And then you almost have to start proving yourself within the industry again and proving what else you can do.”
On that note, I wonder whether there are any types of roles that she hasn’t been offered yet that she would like to try her hand at. “I would like to do something in the supernatural world. Because I have always grown up believing in that sort of thing. So, I would like to do something like that,” she says, after giving the question some thought. “And also, some really crazy character. I love Helena Bonham Carter; she gets all of those really fun, abstract roles, and I love that. That is how I started off at the workshop, playing all of these crazy characters. So, something like that would be fun…”
Chanel tells me that she believes there should always be an element of choice when it comes to the parts an actor plays. “I do pick and choose what is right for me, because there has to be an element of truth in it somewhere,” she reveals. “When I do more serious dramas and things like that, something has to resonate with me. I want to be able to portray the part properly, to do justice to it. So, I do take those roles very, very seriously. If I don’t feel like something is right, or I don’t quite know what the script is trying to get at, and I don’t understand it, I tend to step away.”
Heart set on a part, there is nothing better than being told that she has been chosen to play it. “I don’t think there is one time when I haven’t cried after being told I have got a role. That is how much it means to me. It is incredible,” she admits. “I just take it very personally when somebody gives me an opportunity to play a role that I really wanted. To me it is huge.”
That moment felt even more significant with her latest job offer. “I really, really wanted a role in this production – it was a director that I have loved since I was very young. My dad passed away in January, very suddenly, and I have this picture of him, and I hadn’t realised that I had hung this picture so that it looked through into my self-taping room… I walked past, and I said to the picture, please let me get a part in this… I ended up getting a phone call telling me I had got that part, and I just started crying. I was just so, so happy. It felt like my dad was there and that he had helped,” she reveals. “I don’t think that I can tell you anything about the role at the moment, but it is definitely a childhood, bucket-list moment ticking off! I am actually going down to London tomorrow for costume fittings and meeting the director. And I am just so excited about that.”
It sounds like there will be lots to look forward to in 2023, but aside from exciting work opportunities, I wonder if Chanel has any wishes for the year ahead. “If somebody actually did give me a wish, it would probably be for 10 other wishes. So, then I had a few, and if I made an error, I could correct it,” she laughs. “But I guess it would be for everybody to be healthy and happy, really. Because obviously I have lost one of my parents this year, so I think that is very important for me.”

‘YOUR STORY, OUR DESIGN’
Pieces of jewellery inherited from loved ones or handed down from previous generations are precious but are sometimes in need of a new lease of life. Redesigning jewellery can be a fantastic way to carry the sentimentality over into something wearable, in your own style and size. It is also a great ethical option, as no new mining need take place.

The team lovingly create wonders daily; a recent favourite being an extraordinary, handcrafted solid gold umbrella figurine as a tribute to late Grandma June who would often lend out umbrellas to her loved ones. For the Harriet Kelsall Bespoke team, it’s important that each piece of jewellery keeps telling its own special story.
Recent customer Lesley summarised her bespoke journey after working with Primrose Hill designer Tom: “I felt so involved in the design, it really was very special and exciting. When my ring was finally ready I was stunned at how beautiful it was, the original stones looked even more stunning and yet it was a completely different ring; totally unique and it looked amazing on my finger. From the drawings to the real thing it was breath-taking.”

FABRIC RECOMMENDS
Luke Ormsby Hair, Primrose Hill
In the long dark days of lockdown, I made a promise to myself that when it was all over, I’d prioritise pampering treatments. I’m embarrassed to say that since then I’ve visited a hair salon all of three times. I was blessed with naturally straight, shiny hair with plenty of body – in the days before the greys started appearing in earnest I could go for months between appointments. I’m sorry to say that this is no longer the case, and the sight that confronts me in the mirror demands urgent attention. Not least because I’m meeting with an old friend who I haven’t seen since 2019.
The new Luke Ormsby Hair salon in Primrose Hill offers salvation. I’ve no time for a full colour overhaul, but I know that a good cut and a bouncy blow dry will, at the very least, distract from the greys. The day of my appointment is cold and drizzly, but the welcome is warm and the salon itself is bright and inviting. With wooden floors and furnishings, luscious green plants everywhere and lighting that is just right, it feels like summer in here, even if nowhere else.
After a quick consultation in which we decide I can afford to lose at least four inches (I had no idea how long these locks had grown), I’m shown over to the backwash station. The next 10 minutes are heaven – the reclining chair incorporates a clever mechanical massage system, and as the knots are kneaded from my back, post shampoo, I’m also treated to what is possibly the best head massage I have ever experienced. It is bliss and I wish I could stay here all day. The products smell divine, too, making this feel like a true spa experience. Luke and his team use Oway, a haircare brand made with organic, biodynamically grown ingredients to deliver salon-professional performance. Produced on one farm in Italy, the products are packaged in gorgeous apothecary style glass bottles which protect the contents from UV damage.
Back in front of the mirror, the cutting begins, and as my stylist gets to work, we chat happily while I sip on a coffee – it comes served in a thermal mug, which is genius. I can’t count the number of times I’ve had to abandon a long cold cuppa in salons in the past… Once the length has been sorted, I’m given a swift blowdry in order for layers to be added and shape cut in. I can already see that the appearance has been vastly improved. Once the final cuts have been made, my locks are curled to give the look a little more volume and movement. The difference is staggering, and I can barely notice the greys at all. Though I do seize the opportunity to have a quick patch test and colour consultation so that I can pop back in and complete my transformation when I have a little more time.
I leave the salon with a bounce not just in my bob, but my step, too, there really is nothing better than a spot of pampering. LSJ

DRINKS Spirit of the night
No ordinary gin, SEVENTY ONE was created by legendary fashion photographer and artist Mert Alas, who so loved sipping a gin on the rocks before a night out that he spent four years distilling the ultimate blend. With the care that goes into creating a luxury fragrance, his small batch premium gin is created using the finest balance of complex botanicals, including the orchid cactus, Queen of the Night, which blooms for just a single night a year and imparts a jasmine-like delicacy to the drink. With its irresistible art deco styling, the exquisite packaging, too, takes its cues from the world of fragrance. The name comes from the 71 nights that the gin spends resting in casks. A mix of virgin Spanish oak, ex Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and ex-Cognac casks are used, allowing the botanicals to gently marry, imbuing the spirit with an amber glow. One superior sip, this is the perfect gift for the gin lovers in your life this Christmas, or a seriously classy addition to your cocktail cart.

Lina Stores Arancini with Gorgonzola
Since 1944, Lina Stores have been selling authentic Italian produce and fresh, handmade pasta, panini and dolci from their delicatessen on Brewer Street in Soho, and over the years the Lina Stores family has grown to include a restaurant on Greek Street, restaurants and delis in Marylebone and King’s Cross, and a restaurant in the Bloomberg Arcade. From panettone, panforte and torrone to Christmas gift hampers, indulgent Italian chocolates and traditional confectionery, their festive collection (pictured, right) promises gorgeous gifts for the foodies in your life, and the team are on hand for advice on Christmas catering, too. To give an idea of what’s on offer, they shared this recipe with us – it’s perfect for serving as an appetiser at drinks dos, or as a starter with a difference on the big day. Squisito!
INGREDIENTS
500g Arborio rice | 450g Gorgonzola | 150ml white wine | 80g shallots, finely chopped | 1 garlic clove, finely chopped | 125ml rapeseed oil | 300g Parmigiano Reggiano, grated | 1.5l vegetable stock | 50g flour | 4 eggs, beaten | 100g breadcrumbs | Salt and black pepper to taste | 50ml rapeseed oil, for frying | Pear Mostarda, for dipping
MAKES 20 – 25 Arancini balls
METHOD
1. Add rapeseed oil, chopped garlic and shallots to a large pot and sauté for 1 minute at a high temperature. Add the rice and fry the mixture for a further minute. Deglaze with white wine and cook until reduced (for a further minute or two). Reduce the heat to low, add half the vegetable stock and simmer gently while stirring for 3 minutes. Add the rest of the stock and cook on a gentle heat, stirring until the rice is fully cooked, approximately 9-10 minutes. The consistency should be like thick but runny risotto with a little bit of bite left. Do not overcook the rice.
2. Remove from heat and pour the rice mixture into a large bowl, add the grated Parmigiano Reggiano, as well as salt and pepper to taste. Mix
thoroughly and leave to cool until around room temperature.
3. Once fully cooled, roll a small portion of rice mixture in your hands until you have a round, perfectly formed ball. Fill with 15-20g of Gorgonzola. Set up three separate bowls with one containing the flour, one containing the beaten eggs and one containing the breadcrumbs. Roll each ball in flour, followed by egg mixture and finally in breadcrumbs. Put aside.
4. Heat oil on high in a deep pan and deep-fry Arancini for 3-4 minutes until they are golden and crispy all over.
5. Serve with Pear Mostarda for dipping.

Executive Head Chef, Norma
What’s the last thing you cooked?
Funnily enough, nothing Italian – it was a cheeseburger with Applewood smoked cheddar, onion relish and loads of gherkins in a proper bun.
What’s your signature dish?
More than a signature dish, it’s a dish that I always cook when I am entertaining or with family, which is chorizo and sundried tomato pasta, with datterinni tomatoes, tomato sauce, a dash of double cream, fresh rocket leaves and loads of parmesan.
What do you cook on your days off?
I prefer not to cook on my day off to be honest! But I often end up making a torta salata (a type of savoury tart) with whatever happens to be in the fridge. This is my go-to dish when I am in rush, and it always turns out amazing – though I am never able to create the same one twice.
Best meal you’ve ever eaten?
It’s my mum’s homemade sheep cheese ravioli with fresh tomato sauce, there’s nothing like it! So many memories…
Guilty food pleasure?
I love a Pinsa Romana (a Romanstyle pizza) with porchetta, potato and truffle. (And secretly I die for a Nando’s!)
If you could cook for anyone, who? I would love to cook for Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones. I am obsessed!
What should no kitchen be without? This is going to sound a bit cheesy, but I think it’s love. When you put love into your cooking, it’s just everything.

Further afield, the market in front of the Palace of Charlottenburg is worth a visit and both Potsdam Old Town and the Dutch Quarter markets make for a great day trip.
The perfect place to warm up is Zur Letzten Instanz, allegedly the oldest restaurant in Berlin, dating back to the 17th century – it serves one of the best schnitzels. And for something a bit more unexpected, Hotel de Rome’s own CHIARO restaurant serves an Italian Japanese fusion concept.
For a spot of culture, Staatsoper, Berlin’s oldest opera house, is highly recommended. At this time of year you can enjoy a festive classic such as Swan Lake or Mozart’s The Magic Flute. It’s a must visit for both first time and seasoned visitors!

A WARM SCOTS WELCOME review
WORDS by LIZ SKONE JAMES
Perched on the bonnie banks of Loch Lomond, with the wild and moody Trossachs National Park on its doorstep, the outlook from Cameron House is as spectacular on a sunny day as it is when the rain sets in, which is fortunate, because the sun seems reluctant to show its face for much of our stay.
It is a holiday of firsts for us, the first time we have been to Scotland and, incredibly, the first time we have stayed in a hotel with children. There is, of course, nothing better than spending a few days ensconced in luxury while your every whim is catered to, just not with little ones in tow… why ruin the experience with tantrums, early tea times and enforced bedtimes, we have always reasoned. And until now, we’ve saved hotels for stolen weekends of grown-up pleasure and stuck to self-catering breaks when it comes to family holidays. But this time I’m after a real break, with no domestic responsibilities, so we decide to revisit our opinions on this.
Five-star Cameron House promises to offer everything families could want – no less than six restaurants to suit all palates and dinner-time schedules, leisure facilities both inside and out to appeal to young and old alike, and beautiful bedrooms and suites with room for everybody to spread out and find their own space.
Though it has been sympathetically extended over the years, the heart of the hotel lies in a 17th century baronial mansion complete with towers
and turrets. This part of the hotel was almost destroyed by a devastating fire in 2017, and the whole hotel has since undergone a multi-millionpound restoration project which saw the original manor painstakingly rebuilt and included the addition of the sparkly new Lomond Wing that opened this year – it now offers 208 bedrooms including 28 suites, with 115 self-catering cottages and apartments set across 400 acres of land. It sounds vast, but, with exceptional service from the Guest Experience Team – you can’t miss them as they’re impeccably dressed in bespoke Johnstons of Elgin attire – it has an exclusive, boutique feel. We are welcomed like family and shown to our room, which boasts a cosy bunk room, as well as a comfortable sitting area overlooking the Loch and a luxurious marble-clad en suite. Decorated in an autumnal palette with richly patterned wallpaper, dark wood, tactile leather and tartan fabrics, the aesthetic is Scottish country house chic, and there are all the little luxuries you would expect, including flat screen TVs in both the main bedroom and the bunk room, a Nespresso machine and fluffy robes in a selection of sizes for the whole family.
I’m booked into the spa for a treatment and the children are keen to explore the leisure facilities on site – an 18-metre swimming pool complete with water slide beckons – so we don’t hang around for long. I head to the reception area, where I am ushered into one of the Cameron House cars for the short transfer to the spa, which is located,
along with the golf clubhouse, a few minutes’ drive down the Loch shore. Here, a tempting menu of ESPA treatments are on offer, along with thermal and hydrotherapy facilities, and a serene indoor swimming pool with vast picture windows plus a rooftop infinity pool, both offering views of the spectacular Scottish scenery. I spend an idyllic afternoon having my tensions massaged away before making full use of the facilities and relaxation areas, dragging myself reluctantly out of the bubbling rooftop pool as the sun begins to set.
We eat dinner on our first night in the Cameron Grill, which is relaxed and welcoming for the children, but still manages to feel like an indulgent treat for us. The menu focuses on locally sourced meat and fish, though there are some more unusual veggie options, too. And the children’s menu is well received by our brood. The littlest orders macaroni cheese and is delighted at the attentive service he receives: “Sir would like ketchup with his pasta? Why of course…”
Breakfast is served here, too, and in the light, we appreciate the spectacular views of the Loch, which is dramatically wreathed in mist on this drizzly day. We’ve an action-packed morning planned, so we fill up from the buffet and treat ourselves to something cooked from the à la carte menu, too. Afterwards, we head to the Marina, where we have been booked onto an exciting excursion on the hotel’s speedboat, Wee Warrior. Whipping across the water with the spray in our faces, bumping over waves and landing with a splash is a truly exhilarating experience, and from here we can admire the hotel from a whole new vantage point. It is certainly commanding viewed from out on the water.
We speed across to Inchcailloch island, pulling up at the wooden jetty to disembark. Here, there is time to explore, and we spend a happy hour discovering this little uninhabited Eden – scrambling up the winding summit path to the viewpoint to admire the vista, skimming stones from the windswept beach at Port Bawn and discovering the old, ruined farm. Nature is giving us quite the show, with the autumn leaves at their fiery finest, and we spot fallow deer darting off through the undergrowth.
Reborn after a major renovation, Cameron House offers world-class facilities and five star service, with a programme of activities that will appeal to all ages
46 LUXURY LONDON LIVING
Back at the hotel, we are just in time for an early afternoon tea in the light-filled Lobby Bar, where the children are treated to their own tea, especially designed for little folk. The attention to detail is incredible. Full and happy we head to the Cameron Cinema, where we curl up on the comfortable seats and enjoy a cosy afternoon watching a family film with little boxes of popcorn from the kiosk.
There’s another swim on the cards when the film finishes, which is just as well, because we are far from being in calorie deficit today. It’s my first experience of the leisure complex and it doesn’t fail to impress. With a bubbling spa bath as well as the fun flume, it certainly has something for all of us.
Dinner that evening comes courtesy of the Boat House, which is a short stroll from the hotel, set in a gorgeous position overlooking the Marina. Decorated in boardwalk chic, the menu is unpretentious, and seafood-led. We enjoy our food and then linger over wine, while the children enjoy beach-combing on the sand outside, making friends by the giant chess board. It has been another successful evening for family friendly dining.
We’re due to check out the next morning, but there’s no pressure to leave, with guests encouraged to enjoy the facilities for as long as they wish on the day of departure, so we stow our luggage at reception after enjoying another hearty breakfast and then hire bikes to explore the local area, returning for one last swim before hitting the road. Holiday expectations have been well and truly adjusted – there’s no doubt we could all get used to this level of luxury.

Sofas & Stuff’s new Peruvian collection started life during the pandemic when founder Andrew Cussins dipped into past editions of textile magazine Selvedge for inspiration. During this period of isolation, Cussins felt the desire to connect with artisans from across the globe who could make unique fabrics suited to highend upholstery. The result is a limited-edition collection of just 60 sofas, chairs and footstools featuring the vibrant and intricate work of spinners and weavers from the Centre for Traditional Textiles in Cusco.

Where sound tech meets street art, Bang & Olufsen has teamed up with visionary urban artist Fin DAC to create a special Beoplay A9 speaker. Fin DAC is known for themes of female emancipation and empowerment, readjusting the male gaze, and disrupting colonialist attitudes around the Eastern experience, so the aesthetic is as powerful as the sculptural smart speaker itself. “Bang & Olufsen is one of the most renowned brands of the late 20th and 21st centuries with a definitive Scandinavian style and design,” says the artist. “A collaborative opportunity like this had to be jumped at.” Limited to only 30, we’d suggest you jump, too. £3,999 (bang-olufsen.com)

A festive flourish
WORDS by ALI HOWARD
A TOP TABLE
The big Christmas lunch is an opportunity to hone our tablescaping skills – not to mention all the spirited get-togethers with friends and family both before and after the big day. We’ll want to show off our expert layering as much as possible over the festive period. Rebecca Udall’s nature-inspired Christmas table offering features linen tablecloths with matching ruffled napkins; waxed Italian linen placemats in wintery hues of burgundy and emerald; scalloped crockery and serveware designed to be layered up for maximum effect; and tall tapered candles in tonal, earthy shades that will add sparkle without taking up precious table space. Leave that to the impressive centrepiece of glittering baubles and fresh botanicals.

HEARTH OF THE HOME
A welcoming Christmas fireplace is a must for period property dwellers, especially if you’re hoping a certain visitor in a red suit and big black boots will drop in. Showing us how it’s done, luxury floral designer Ronny Colbie teams up with Owen Pacey, founder of leading fireplace specialist Renaissance London. “Styling your home with gorgeous mantelpiece garlands should complement your interiors yet remain in keeping with festive tradition,” says Colbie. “If a traditional red and gold theme resonates, wintery red hydrangea adds both opulence and warmth, and pairs perfectly with burnt beech and fresh pine, which can be sourced locally or foraged in the garden. To complete a perfect garland, use a mixture of everlasting fillers such as pampas grass and pine cones amongst the fresh foliage, they will dry gorgeously by the fire to be enjoyed throughout the Christmas season.”

Pure, Christmassy magic
WINDOW DRESSING
One way to counter the gloom of the shortest days of the year is to illuminate our homes with Christmas lights. While it’s tempting to go all out with a sparkling display, this year we’re also painfully aware of conserving electricity, being conscious of both our monthly bill and our environmental impact. Thankfully, less is more when it comes to festive lights, as Cox & Cox’s delicate starburst-tipped light-up curtain proves. As is tradition, lit candles – and more recently, LED operated lights –in a window show warmth and hospitality, and importantly, an invitation to step inside and out of the chilly darkness. These ditsy festive lights feature barely there silver wiring, the effect of which is a window filled with stars suspended in the dark.

O CHRISTMAS TREE!
Some homes offer a natural spot for a magnificent Christmas tree display, an ornate period bay window being the obvious choice. (Go large to make the most of those high ceilings). It’s also worth thinking about where you’ll be spending the majority of the day, and where the heart of the action will be on the 25th – kids, of course, will want to be where the pressies are. That said, a Christmas tree in a wide hallway can turn this functional walkthrough space into a magical winter wonderland, whilst giving your beautifully decorated Scots Pine its own dedicated room for the greatest impact. Evoking feelings of warmth and homeliness, traditional colours of crimson, emerald and gold are getting a fresh look-in for Christmas 2022, as in Amara’s imposing tree that makes the best use of this grand, double-height entrance hall.
Christmas tree decorations start from £15 (amara.com)
DOOR J’ADORE
A beautifully crafted wreath hung on the front door not only adds seasonal cheer but offers a symbol of hospitality to neighbours and passers-by. Whether you go glitzy and contemporary with a synthetic wreath, or you favour the more traditional festive foliage of real pine, eucalyptus and dried citrus fruits, you’ll be announcing to the world that you and your home are well and truly in the Christmas spirit. West London’s Real Flower Company offers traditionally handcrafted Christmassy creations made from only natural materials, including its citrus and spice ecofriendly moss door wreath. Featuring dried oranges, pink pepper berries, and packed with long-lasting winter foliage sourced from climate-positive, carbon-negative farms, you’ll be the envy of your street with a wreath that’s both spicy and sustainable.

IAIN PRITCHARD & GLENN ROBB
WORDS by ALI HOWARD
Partners in business and in life, Iain and Glenn were perfectly positioned to pick up this half-finished renovation project with both sets of expert eyes seeing the property’s potential beyond the bare boards, the materials left lying about, and the cacophony of dust and mess left behind by builders. As two halves of interior design studio Alexander Thomas, the pair know a thing or two about creating dream homes. Not only do they offer a comprehensive design service but they also boast their own line of lampshades, soft furnishings, and furniture pieces, too. “The property had been left empty for a number of years,” explains Glenn. “But it still had an amazing feeling.” The couple share their grand Georgian house (complete with a later Victorian addition of the main
drawing room) with their pack of six dogs. “Although four of them are really tiny, so we always say that two count as one,” Glenn concedes.
Iain tells me that the project came to life with a whole lot of hard work, patience, time, energy, and not to mention deep pockets. “We definitely had a strong vision for how we wanted the house to look and feel,” he says. “But it grew as we worked our way from room to room. We spent many months with bare boards and moving boxes while we tackled each space. It takes time to create a lived in, homely space, layering with art, antiques and soft furnishings… We never feel a space is ever truly finished. We’re always changing things around, moving furniture, switching cushions and art… It keeps the space alive and real.” While the couple were determined to stay true to the heritage of the period property during the renovation process, Iain explains that the house isn’t without its modern creature comforts, not least the large, eat-in kitchen with its smart navy cabinetry, stone flooring, and expansive four oven AGA. “We feel our signature look is Modern Country House,” he says. “A nod to a bygone era, but with a fresh approach. For instance, we love to blend a bleached antique burr walnut chest with a piece of modern British or contemporary art. Equally, we’ll hang an 18th century oil portrait over a glass contemporary console. It’s about the juxtaposition and element of surprise. Often things that shouldn’t work on paper do in real life.”
Iain and Glenn like to source their antiques from every corner of the UK and Europe, and it helps that they have excellent relationships with various dealers. “We especially love a good auction and are particularly excited when there’s a sale from a prominent country house,” says Glenn. “Very few items in our home are new. We’ll often buy old chairs and have them re-upholstered rather than sourcing new.” One of the couple’s most cherished possessions is the late 18th century bleached oak linen press that sits stately in the drawing room. “We love the pediment detailing to the top and the scale is perfect for the room,” says Iain. “Also in our drawing room are a pair of antique blue and white lamps, which we picked up from a great antiques shop in Herefordshire one Saturday afternoon. They were one of those finds that if we didn’t buy them there and then, they would be gone.”
Both designers are also keen art collectors, citing works by Shirin Tabeshfar and Trudy Montgomery (who they now represent through Alexander Thomas) as particular favourites.

This interior design duo took on an abandoned renovation project and won. The result is a commodious home of grand proportions and calming neutrals
52 LUXURY LONDON LIVING
Not afraid to mix styles and genres, these works hang in sharp contrast to the magnificent oil painting positioned over the mantelpiece in the drawing room. “It came out of a very important country house in Derbyshire,” says Iain, proudly. With its expansive floor plan, there’s plenty of luxury living space here for Iain and Glenn to spread out in, but if they had to choose a favourite spot, it would be a toss-up between the drawing room and the master bedroom. “They are both spaces we spend the most time in and are probably the rooms we’ve given the most focus and attention to. The drawing room is grand, which gave us the scope to hang artworks by stacking them above one another,” explains Glenn. “There is nothing worse than large walls with the postage stamp look,” adds Iain. “The original marble open fireplace nearly always has a roaring fire going in the autumn and winter months and the three huge floor-length sash windows give us a wonderful view of the gardens we’ve created,” says Glenn. “In contrast, our bedroom is serene, calm, and has incredible views. We kept the palette in here very neutral and soft.”
It’s hard to imagine that these perfectly serene spaces were not so long ago covered in dirt and dust, but that’s of course testament to the couple’s ability to deliver jaw-dropping transformations. I wonder what advice they’d give to anyone looking to tackle a project like this. “Be patient and double your budget and time to get it done,” says Glenn, not even joking. “A big house will always take more time and money that you think. Live in it if you can, before making final decisions. Sometimes in life I think we all have grand ideas to use rooms in a different way, or plan to move a kitchen, for example, to another part of the house. But when you live in it, you notice the way the light moves around, the way you live and function day to day, and you inevitably find the house reminds you that it’s just perfect the way it has always been.”

WORDS by CLAIRE ATHERTON
THOUGHT MONEY’S ALRIGHT TO MENTION
If, like my friend, you find 10 pounds and a note saying “for the mortgage” in a birthday card from your son, you know he’s picking up on the national mood. And he’s not alone. The latest Young Person’s Money Index found that 81 per cent of young people feel worried about their financial situation – up 14 per cent on 2021.
The findings don’t surprise James Yelland, Communications and Marketing Manager at The Money Charity, which helps build money management skills in young people and adults. “The cost-of-living crisis has been so prevalent in the news that young people will have talked about it themselves, or heard others talk about
it at home,” he says. “But the upside is that 72 per cent say they want more financial education in school. They’re looking at the adult world and thinking ‘I don’t want that to be me’.”
Financial education has been on the National Curriculum since 2014, but state schools can lack the resource and confidence to offer specific provision. And even independent schools have resource constraints. So the topic can end up getting absorbed into numeracy, which – while important – is only part of the picture. To plug the gap, The Money Charity uses fun, interactive in-school or virtual workshops to teach young people relevant and practical skills, like how to budget for a holiday with friends. But with research showing that our approach to managing money is set by the age of seven, parents can do a lot to help, too. James has this advice.
1 Get your child used to basic concepts early. Playing shop is a foundational learning process, for example. You could also give them a bit of pocket money and teach them about saving it for something bigger. Or you could involve them in choosing between differently priced options in your online grocery shop.
2 Challenge your school about its financial education provision. If it’s falling short, suggest bringing in an independent expert like The Money Charity.
3 Make it normal to talk about money. We need to shift mindsets in the UK so people see money not as a hindrance, but as a tool that can help you achieve your life goals. Other topics that used to be taboo have now been normalised; we need to do the same with money.

King Alfred School
What attracted you to the school?
I came from the state system, which I found had become too driven by exam results at the expense of broader education. King Alfred School (KAS) shared my beliefs about what education should be.
What makes it different?
KAS takes a child-centred and holistic approach which marries strong academic progress with a genuine commitment to personal development and wellbeing. We build the education around the child rather than making the child fit into the system.
What’s your personal educational ethos?
Education can be both academic and nurturing of the whole person, and that’s what I hope for all children and young people in my school and beyond.
How do you balance your extra-curricular activities with the academic side? We have a thriving programme and are especially well known for our performing and visual arts. Our philosophy, though, is that this kind of learning should happen within the curriculum, as well as at lunchtimes and after school. We therefore have a ‘Choice’ afternoon once a week in which everyone can explore their passions and develop their love of learning for its own sake.

How do you look after the wellbeing of your pupils?
We have a wide range of provision, including pastoral staff and school counsellors. But above all, wellbeing is about culture. The children and young people need to feel valued and known for who they are, rather than as a data point on a spreadsheet. There needs to be a close and positive relationship with families, and an environment which recognises and celebrates the things at which children succeed.

“This is a fantastic spot on the high street in Highgate that produces traditional and authentic hand-made Argentinian empanadas and sweet treats called alfajores,” says Ali Ishaq from Savills. “It’s a great place to pop into between viewings for a quick boost of energy. There are plenty of flavours to choose from, including spinach and ricotta, spicy chicken, and dulce de leche, which are a few of our team favourites. It’s a much-treasured local business and the staff in there always take time to chat to us and other customers.”

THE GATEHOUSE, N6
For Benham & Reeves’ Billy Boyle, you can’t beat a beloved local boozer to bring the community together.
“This is a family-friendly pub that also serves as one of Highgate’s main community hubs,” he confirms.
“The Gatehouse offers traditional pub fare with an Iberian twist. An upstairs theatre and themed evenings, such as live jazz and wine dinners, ensure that there is something for everyone at this beautiful hillside location. And the all-weather garden is a particular favourite with locals.” Cheers to that!

TURQUOISE KITCHEN, N6
Mixing Turkish, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern fare, there’s something for everyone at this lively village eatery – including plentiful veggie and vegan options. Vivienne Harris at Heathgate is a regular at Turquoise Kitchen, telling us: “It’s a really lovely family restaurant with delicious food.” Choose from an extensive menu that includes hot, cold and mixed mezze; charcoal grills and burgers; seafood and salads, as well as a good selection of rude-not-to desserts, from authentic baklavas and sütlaç, to the unapologetically gluttonous chocolate fudge cake. Treats all round!

Nell Gwynn became one of the first ever English actresses when she joined the King’s Players in the 1660s, but that’s not the only thing she was famous for. She caught the eye of King Charles II, and the pair went on to have a son together. Legend has it that while staying as guests of the Earl of Lauderdale at Lauderdale House, Nell dangled their son out of the window in a bid to get him an aristocratic title. “Make him a duke or I drop him,” she proclaimed, “God save the Earl of Burford!” Charles shouted back

Peggy Vance & Karen Paul
Founders, Stellar Theatre
Stellar Theatre is all about creating a different experience of theatre, bringing rehearsed readings of new plays into people’s homes or private venues. Where better for us to find constant inspiration and artistic nourishment than literary and culture-infused Highgate?
One of the greatest joys of living here has to be its relationship with the Heath. Karen walks with her two (crazy!) Labradors across the wondrous gardens of Kenwood House and past the ponds to meet Peggy in Swain’s Lane. Here the amazing foodie shops and cafés provide our daily haunts. We perch with dogs in tow outside Superette, sipping delicious coffee, and admiring the little tincan vases of wildflowers on the tables from Electric Daisy Flower Farm. We often talk for so long we can’t face cooking and end up buying something ready-made for supper-to-go for the kids.
We also enjoy meetings with actors and clients over yummy dishes at Kalendar, chatting to the charming owner Alex and the lovely Monica. Sometimes we huddle there to warm up with hot chocolate after swimming in the Ladies’ Pond. What a special place to be, with women young and old circling the sparkling water, sporting bright woolly hats, perhaps noticing the heron, stock still on the life rings, and the autumn oak leaves floating on the silky surface of the pond. There are smiles all round as the ducks invade the changing room before being shooed out by naked women!
Kenwood House is our go-to spot for outdoor celebrations – whether it be one of our kids’ birthdays or finding a wonderful new play for our roster – or to experience a delightful artistic feast within the magnificent interior of the house, a particular favourite of Karen’s being Rembrandt’s Self-Portrait with Two Circles.
We are also spoiled for choice with nearby Lauderdale House, which is steeped in Highgate lore – Nell Gwyn lived there and Andrew Marvell’s house was nearby. We love the sound of children gambolling on the lawn in front of the café.
In Waterlow Park, we walk past the statue of Sir Sydney with his rolled up umbrella – the only

Streethearts
umbrella on a statue in London – on our way to check out Mary’s Living & Giving and the other brilliant charity shops of Highgate Village. We’ve enjoyed some fabulous fashion finds, so this is a must before hosting a Stellar theatrical event! Literary tips from the ever-knowledgeable Anna in the Highgate Bookshop are always much appreciated, too.
Langbourne Avenue holds a particular place in Peggy’s heart as she has lived in four different homes there over as many decades. The flats were built as Lady Workers’ Homes for the female workers needed in London after the first World War, and they are now affectionately called ‘the Tudor cliffs’. There are so many friendly faces here that a quick trip to the shops can in a flash turn into an hour of catching up with neighbours.
Indeed, there’s so much to admire in Highgate that we could wax lyrical all day – Mickey’s annual foresting of Tesco with his perfect Christmas trees deserves a mention, though, as do the colourful cyclists training on Hillway, making the uphill slog look effortless. Rather them than us!

The best route from village to Heath, this private road has the feel of a country lane and is home to some of the area’s most fascinating – not to mention expensive – modern houses
COMMENT From our agents
Mark Sumray, Dexters
“Highgate and the surrounding areas are affluent suburbs with many residents known for being in the media, arts and sports. The appeal for high quality housing comes from both international and UK buyers and tenants. One of my favourite streets is Stormont Road because of its proximity to the Heath and several excellent local schools.”
Nathan Taylor, Goldschmidt & Howland
“From grand Georgian townhouses to world-famous modernist buildings – and what’s rumoured to be the second largest family home after Buckingham Palace – Highgate is home to an array of properties. But the true beauty is its green spaces, independent high street and its residents. Over the past 18 months we’ve been busiest with the family house market and particularly sales between £2 million and £6 million.”
Robert Bixby, Chancellors
“For me, like most residents through lockdown, the daily walks allowed one to peel away another layer and to appreciate Highgate village for its true beauty. From the much written about cemetery, to the character of Holly Lodge Estate, the playground of Angela Burdett-Coutts, to the striking modern architecture in contrast to the remnants of the 17th century market town... Just don’t expect to find a cash point!”

EVENT
St John’s Hospice, which is supported by Winkworth St. John’s Wood, is holding a very special celebration on Monday 5 December that’ll not only get you into the Christmas spirit but will raise vital funds for the hospice, too. Light Up a Life is a multi-faith gala with poems, readings and music, which aims to bring the community together and make a real difference to those living with life-limiting illnesses – and of course, their loved ones. The celebration takes place at St. John’s Wood Church and is followed by a reception at Lord’s Cricket Ground. What’s more, attendees will go home with a free hand-crafted wooden bauble to hang on the tree, and cherish. Here’s how your support can help: £10 could fund a nutritious meal and drinks throughout the day for a patient visiting the hospice’s day care unit; £30 could fund an emergency fuel top-up card for a patient out in the community; and £50 could give a bereaved child or young person the opportunity to attend St John’s invaluable winter activity programme. Get involved!

ASK THE AGENT
Can buying and selling over the Christmas period be more challenging than usual?
The number of home buyers browsing for properties on the property portals and on our website (g-h.co.uk) is increasing every year. People have more free time and motivation to make a change in time for the New Year, so it can be a great time to buy and sell. Christmas is a busy time for families, so we don’t disturb our clients, we direct enquiries to our social media channels but refrain from viewings until after the New Year. We would recommend trying to instruct your agent prior to putting up any Christmas decorations, this prevents the photos from looking old if it doesn’t sell instantly.
Lakhani, Goldschmidt & Howland
How long have you been in the business? Over 40 years, although perhaps I shouldn’t admit to that! I’m still learning every day.
If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… an actress. I used to be in all my school plays and loved performing, although I still really enjoy what I do.
I love London because… it is vibrant, beautiful, eclectic, and multi-national. There’s no other city that compares to London.
First London home? A small cottage in Hampstead Garden Suburb; I really loved it and was sad to leave when the time came.
Favourite London street? Oh, too many to mention – but if I had to choose I would say Regent Street because of the grand architecture and width of the road. It feels more like a boulevard.
Where do you go for head space in the city? Hampstead Heath, Primrose Hill and Regent’s Park, or for a long yoga session.
Most memorable sale? I sold two houses next door to each other, to two families who were friends. Not only were the sellers delightful to work with but both sets of buyers were charming, too. I’m still friends with all of them.
Property pet peeve? When the layout is not practical or well thought out, so that there is no flow, or one needs to go through one room to get to another.
London’s most impressive building? The Shard – lovely from an architectural point of view, can be seen in every London skyline, and offers wonderful views across the Capital from the upper floors.
Favourite Londoner? Sherlock Homes, I love the way he thinks outside the box and the speed at which his mind works.
