The greatest threat to your property ...your tenants?

The buy-to-let market is fraught with danger for landlords. Letting out your property in London entails giving strangers free run of assets worth hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of pounds. You need to not only find the right tenants, but also make sure they leave on time, with no surprises – that is a successful let.

T H E AT R E

The Nether DUKE OF YORK’S, WC2N Set in 2050, this crime thriller is an unnerving one – largely because, like all the best fictional dystopias, it’s one that isn’t all that detached from our reality. Jennifer Haley’s virtual world – think a 3D version of the internet to step into – offers complete freedom. All you need to do is log in, choose an identity and let your wildest fantasies come true. So far, so not-that-creepy? Think again. The Nether slowly exposes the disturbing morality of identity in the digital world and quickly turns nightmarish. As edge-of-the-seat compelling as it is acutely clever, it’s no wonder this unique, award-winning show sees its much-deserved West End transfer. Until 25 April, 104 St. Martin’s Lane, WC2N (0844 871 3055; thenethertheplay.co.uk)

EXHIBITION

Modern British Artists

HIGHGATE CONTEMPORARY ART, N6 Despite not having had a permanent space to call home for over three years, the Boundary Gallery still holds an important place in the hearts of London’s art lovers, these days popping up at the Capital’s many art fairs instead. In its 25-year history, the gallery has shown us the very best of modern British and contemporary figurative art. This month, its founder and director Agi Katz will be bringing the Boundary back to life with a one-week-only exhibition showcasing a number of key works from this time – including some forgotten treasures from her personal collection. Luminaries include ‘Whitechapel Boy’ David Bomberg, Horace Brodzky, Bernard Meninsky and Jacob Kramer, whose 1924 pastel on paper, In a Pensive Mood, has got us thinking too: what other hidden gems might we uncover at this enthralling – if fleeting – Highgate show? 3 to 8 February, 26 Highgate High Street, N6 (020 8340 7564; highgateart.com) 42 | FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Arrested Development KOKO, NW1 Let us not underestimate quite how special a concert of this calibre can be: these hip-hop trailblazers haven’t toured the UK in decades. And yet, the instantly recognisable opening bars of People Everyday, Tennessee and Mr. Wendal have the power to bring us straight back to 1992 with our feet tapping along in our LA Lights like nothing’s happened. Arrested Development’s live performances were notoriously uplifting affairs (not that we were old enough to attend the first time around – ahem!), but we’re hoping they’ve not lost any of that wholly infectious spirit as they play an extensive set that takes in an astonishing career spanning over 20 years. Get ready for one feel-good ’90s nostalgia trip. Altogether now: “I… am everyday people.” 22 February, 1A Camden High Road, NW1 (020 7388 3222; koko.uk.com)

OPERA

AN INVITATION FROM

SWISS COTTAGE SCHOOL

Ruddigore

KING’S HEAD THEATRE, N1 Originally performed at the Savoy Theatre in 1887, Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic tale of ghosts and ghouls, Ruddigore, or The Witch’s Curse, returns to the Capital this month with an enticing slice of ‘Hammer Horror’ thrown in by the highly acclaimed Charles Court Opera. This is, in fact, a celebratory production marking ten years in the business for the opera company, who have now notched up a decade’s worth of rave reviews. Widely regarded as leaders in the resurgence Gilbert and Sullivan are currently enjoying, you can rest assured that this supernatural opera is in safe hands. Expect the spectacular, along with a healthy serving of the spooks. 18 February to 14 March, 115 Upper Street, N1 (020 7478 0160; kingsheadtheatre.com)

EXHIBITION

Bonalumi Sculptures MAZZOLENI ART, W1S A pivotal figure in post-war Italian art, Agostino Bonalumi, alongside peers Piero Manzoni and Enrico Castellani, has been credited with reinventing painting, no less, by blurring the boundaries between two- and three-dimensional canvasses – his resulting ‘picture-objects’ that investigate form and shadow perhaps being his most recognisable works. The next logical step, of course, is one into the world of sculpture, where Bonalumi has indeed concentrated his efforts at various points throughout his incredible six-decade-long career. The works on show here range from the 1960s up to the 2010s, and include the arresting Bronzo, its voluptuous fortune cookie-like form fashioned in bronze to reflect light beautifully. 6 February to 8 May, 27 Albermarle Street, W1S (020 7495 8805; mazzoleniart.com)

Matt Forde: 24 Hour Political Party People

SOHO THEATRE, W1D If there’s one word on everybody’s lips right now, it’s ‘election’. But where tensions run high as Britain decides its future, a little light relief could be just the tonic. Labour adviser turned stand up Matt Forde is bringing his criticallyacclaimed 2014 Edinburgh Fringe show to Soho for a short run this February. His previous London residence at St. James Theatre, The Political Party, was understandably a sell out, fearlessly going head to head with such political heavyweights as Michael Portillo, Nigel Farage, George Galloway and Stella Creasy, to name a few. Not exactly known to be backward in coming forward, you can expect sparks to fly with Forde up front. 16 to 21 February, 21 Dean Street, W1D (020 7478 0100; sohotheatre.com)

Swiss Cottage School, Development and Research Centre invites professionals and parents to the Roadmap for Life Conference – designed to promote independence for children with special educational needs. Parents of children with special educational needs (SEN) regularly feel let down by the system, and the future can sometimes seem daunting. But the new SEN reform places particular focus on helping young people over 16 prepare for their future. Working in partnership with Decipha, a not-forprofit community interest company, the school will host a two-day national conference on 15 and 16 May to help address these issues. Roadmap for Life will highlight important ways that we can help young people with SEN prepare for the future and explore some of the challenges they face – such as applying for jobs and developing new skills and relationships. Families, teachers, SEN coordinators, education professionals, service providers and professionals involved in local authority planning, health and social services are all very welcome to join. very dedicated follower of fashion will tell you that there’s a lot more to Fashion Week than catwalks, cocktails and excellent accessories. Frankly, it’s a 120-hour marathon of dawn-til-dawn shows, people to see and places to go. Ever the good scouts, we turned to stylist Ella Cutter to get us prepped:

HAVE

■ Sunglasses: To avoid the eye of any street-style snappers ready to pounce… Also handy for hangovers. ■ Phone charger: If, like most people, you’re working too. You’ll also find them along the front row at Somerset House. ■ Snacks: There’s no chance to eat, and usually all that’s on offer is cake. Not good for Fashion Week skin. ■ Flats: There’s too much standing for heels, plus they don’t agree with Somerset

House’s cobblestones. ■ PLUS: Water, make up, mints, camera, plasters, dry shampoo, and some non-fashion friends to remind you there’s another world.

KNOW

■ Dressing: Plan the night before; shows start early. And you want to look good because, well, everyone else does, but don’t go overboard; those who look best keep it simple. ■ Be organised: Have a timetable for each day with

locations, times and tickets. I have an A4 leather pouch that doubles as a clutch. ■ The press room: Apply for a pass at all times. There’s water, coffee, wifi, laptops and sockets. ■ Celeb spotting: Best outside the big shows, not Somerset House, so hunt down those venues. ■ Transport: Cabs are a bad idea; you can walk to almost every FW venue – it’s designed that way. ■ Watch out for flying objects: Some-

one fell through the floor last season. Eek! ■ Ignore social media: Twitter and Instagram flood with blurry runway pics. ■ Learn street-style photographers: If you can’t find a venue or are after good celeb spots; if you see Tommy Ton, it’s likely Anna Wintour is due. ■ Parties: Only RSVP to ones you’re actually going to – and hit the coconut water after. ■ Between shows: If you find a minute to yourself, grab some food and listen to music or read a book. It’s like meditation. ■ Finally, don't bitch: You never know who you may be behind or in front of.

Don’t think it starts and ends with Notting Hill in August; February is officially the month of the carnival – you’ve just got to go a little further to get your party on. All the way to Rio, in fact. If you’re channelling Lola on the long-haul to Copacabana, may we suggest you put on one of our party picks: something from the sartorial fiesta that is homegrown label House of Hackney’s new collection. Long-time Fabric favourite homewares label turned our go-to for goodtime-wear, nothing says “vamos festejar” better than these ecstatic tropical prints. And if you’re not, surely that’s enough cheering new-season style to keep you perky ’til it’s warm enough to, you know, wear it. (houseofhackney.com) 52 | FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Je m’aime

Much more than music, lovely lingerie is, unquestionably, our food of love. But we’ll be perfectly happy to have our other halves “play on” this Valentine’s, because we’ve already self-gifted to satisfaction, filling our drawers with dainty drawers from our new underwear crush, Madame Aime. The fresh face of French heritage brand, Monette Paris, Madame Aime’s art is in seamlessly merging underwear and ready-to-wear, believing that, as the heart of every well-stocked wardrobe, delicates shouldn’t be confined to the bedroom. And, indeed, you won’t want to keep these beauties under wraps; new to Net-a-Porter this year, we’ll be sporting this charming silk and lace body under clothes, over clothes, and – as often as possible – instead of clothes. £215 (madame-aime.com; net-a-porter.com)

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS Recently, we received a rather unusual gift: a whole pineapple. Naturally, we ate an awful lot of fruit salad that day, but we did wonder… Shortly afterwards, heading to Ham Yard Hotel for a cocktail, the plot thickened: if there wasn’t a giant golden pineapple glimmering across the courtyard. What was this piña epidemic?! Brummells of London, actually – an exquisite apothecary for fine fragrance, grooming and skincare brands. As heroic sailors once marked their return and new wealth with coveted, exotic pineapples (aha!), Brummells’ intrepid explorers travel the globe, sourcing instead remarkable, innovative and narrative-rich products from all over the world. Cocktail hour just got so much more interesting (and expensive). Denman Place, W1D (020 7287 2779; brummellsoflondon.com)

A FRESH NEW COLOUR AT DANIEL GALVIN Never having been accused of being anything approaching a trendsetter, it was with schoolgirl-ish levels of excitement that I learned the fashion gods had decided to smile upon me. For, at the very moment I had resolved to take the plunge, and transform myself from a common-orgarden brunette into a ravishing redhead, the fates aligned in their mysterious way and announced that Titian locks are the only shade to be sporting this spring. From muted copper to full-on flame, if it ain’t red, it simply ain’t happening. Grabbing the chance to make up for a lifetime of missed fashion windows, I hotfooted it to Daniel Galvin – for who else to trust with my tresses than the

certified king of colour? Daniel has been in the business for over 30 years, has an OBE to prove it, and trains each and every one of the multitude of colourists at his Marylebone salon to seriously impressive standards. Indeed, my request for such a dramatic change of colour meant I was the cause of quite the stir, quickly becoming the centre of attention (and, oh, how I hated it!) as curious members of the team came over to ask technical questions of Lily, my lovely colourist, belying a passion for their profession which was a credit to the whole salon. Being the proud owner of nearly waist length hair, I knew that this would be no part-time commitment – heck, even blow-drying it can take the best part of an hour – and so it was a staggering five hours later that I emerged, phoenix from the flames, with hair a vibrant, head-turning hue that would give even the heavenly Christina Hendricks a run for her money. Whether this is a new me, or simply a newfound dedicated following of fashion, only time will tell... But, in the meantime, I am loving both my hair, and my spot at the front of the fash pack. INGREDIENTS (SERVES 4) For the plums: ■ 1 2 ripe plums ■ 1 tbsp local runny honey ■ 1 tsp mixed spice ■ 1 tsp grated orange zest ■2 tbsp orange juice

ALMOND AND COCONUT PANCAKES WITH ROASTED SPICED PLUMS Besides carte blanche to eat only pancakes, all day, the beauty of Shrove Tuesday is that it’s essentially a New Year do-over; the diet starts tomorrow, right? But if you are still riding a health kick high, why not pick up a pancake so healthy you won’t even have to eschew it over Lent? Taken from Gut Gastronomy, a new cookbook from Grayshott Spa and health food guru Vicki Edgson, we’ll be having these protein-rich, grain-free beauties for the next 40 days and 40 nights – and feeling all the better for it.

COOK THIS

METHOD ■ Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/gas mark 6. ■ Cut the plums in half, discarding the stones, and place 8, cut-side up, on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Mix together the honey, spices, orange zest and juice and pour over the plums. Roast for 15 minutes, then remove and allow to cool. As the plums cool, they will release their natural juice. ■ Blend the 4 remaining plums with the cooking juices and set aside. ■ To make the pancakes, put the ground almonds in a large mixing bowl. Sift the coconut flour, cinnamon and baking soda over the top and mix thoroughly. ■ In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs with the coconut milk, vanilla seeds and honey, then beat this into the dry mixture to make a smooth batter. ■ Heat a small non-stick frying pan over a low heat. Add a little coconut oil and drop a large spoonful of pancake batter into the hot pan (the mixture should be enough for 4 pancakes). Cook for 1 minute, then flip the pancake over and cook for a further minute on the other side until golden brown. Slide out of the pan and keep warm until all are cooked. ■ Gently reheat the plums, then serve the pancakes with the warm plums, drizzled with sauce made from the juices. Get into the spirit of things If Burns Night got you all fired up over whisky, head to London’s oldest whisky joint this month. Milroy’s has long been synonymous with the Scotch stuff (and Irish, Dutch, Indian...), and has just relaunched, offering not just a specialist whisky shop complete with whisky bar, but also an exclusive basement cocktail bar, Simo’s. Downstairs looks set to become one of Soho’s seriously hip spots, serving seasonal cocktails made with home-infused spirits, but it’s upstairs that’s caught our attention. Whether connoisseur or whisky wannabe, with a selection of over 250 whiskies at the bar, all poured in traditional 35ml servings, you should find a blend to tickle your fancy. And should that fancy be tickled by one of the £200-plus bottles, buy the lot and they’ll lock it up behind the bar in a personal locker with your name on it, so it’s waiting for you every time you return. 3 Greek Street, W1D (020 7437 2385; milroys.co.uk) 54 | FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

F E E D YO U R APP-ETITE We’ve long loved ingenious edible atlas Where Chefs Eat – the round-the-globe guide to the very best dining spots courtesy of the world’s top chefs. From late night empanadas in Buenos Aires to fine dining in town, it’s kept us very well fed, wherever we are. But you can’t always predict when hunger will strike, and now the book features hot tips from more than 600 chefs, it’s even harder to pocket. Thankfully, to complement the all-new edition (now with over 3,000 restaurants in over 70 countries) is a new Where Chefs Eat app. Wherever in the world you’re hungry, you can access all the info in seconds, aided by a clever little interactive map. In the words of Scarlett O’Hara (whose 18” waist suggests she did not have iPhone access), we’ll “never be hungry again”! Pure Taste

DETAILS

115 Westbourne Grove, W2 (020 7727 5000; puretaste restaurant.com)

Hello February readers. Greetings from January me. In case you’ve forgotten, it’s rubbish here. With festive cheer and payday but a distant memory, all we’ve got is 31 days of punishing ourselves for no reason other than that we’re hungover and quite miss our skinny jeans. I am one such self-chastiser, shunning sugar and booze until I crack and end up on the news in some wine-and-cake accident. So where do the dieters dine? Surely not at home with their miso soup and misery every night? For, like dogs and Christmas, a good diet is not just for January. With health sites the new fashion blogs, the Hemsleys’ larder the new Susie Bubble’s wardrobe, it seems everyone’s avoiding some form of food. Apparently, they go to Pure Taste – Notting Hill’s new paleo-friendly fine diner. With each dish suited to the paleolithic ‘caveman diet’, gluten- and dairy-free, and most adhering to any number of other eating regimes, Pure Taste is inviting dieters of all description to come out of hiding. With this in mind, I’m pleased to find it is not, in fact, a sterile space full of OCD types compartmentalising their peas, but rather resembles a restaurant – a lively, nicely-lit neighbourhood restaurant at that. We take the window table and scrutinise the menu. This took a bit of a hit on first reception last month, but the January-February menu is all-new and improved. After toasty, gluten-free focaccia with avocado butter (thank God I didn’t cut out carbs), we start with pretty, pleasing starters of Asian pork, and scallops with apple and parsnip, moving on to mains of halibut, dukkah and lemon froth (“Did cavemen have lemon froth?” “Er, they had lemons. Right?”) and rich beef short ribs. ‘Diet food’ it may be, but this is real food. In January, no less, when dishes need substance, and soul. No, it hasn’t been deep-fried in MSG, so there’ll be times when the naughty tongue craves more naughtiness, but – to my diet-phobic mind – the point is that what they’re doing is borderline revolutionary: providing all the pleasure of dining out, and stripping much of the guilt from it. I do have a confession to make. Ok, two. I do have a glass of organic red. Fine, three. And I hit the petits fours with my coffee (the chocolate hazelnut fudge is paleo, vegan, and refined sugar-free). But I haven’t gotten hammered or eaten anything Bruce Bogtrotter would balk at. Instead, I leave satiated by a proper restaurant dinner – and one my skinny jeans would approve of. CG FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

There aren’t many city spots where you can dine under the stars in February, which makes this French favourite even more special. he walk-in wardrobe is a luxury feature on many a dream home wish list. An unapologetic status symbol – the notion that, Imelda Marcos-like, we have such an abundance of clothes and shoes, they practically deserve their own postcode, let alone their own room – it is every fashion-lover’s fantasy. But, just like en suite bathrooms and nifty roof terraces, sartorial storage space in the shape of a separate dressing room is fast becoming the norm, thanks in no small part to sassy developers who inherently understand our modern-day wardrobe wants. Of course, space is at a premium in our overcrowded city, and new-build or no, we need to make the most of what precious room we have. So whatever your square footage, we’re here to tell you that where there’s a SS15 collection to be had, there’s a way…

T

Words: Ali Howard

There are two schools of thought when it comes to designing your dream dressing room: with your prized garments, shoes and accessories either proudly on display, or hidden neatly behind closed closet doors. If you’re a sucker for clean lines and sleek, minimalist monochromes, a walkin that draws your eye to the back of the room will create the illusion of more space. Doubling up as an all-important wall of mirrors, the doors of this clean-line closet work wonders. Having designed and installed bespoke built-in wardrobes for the Capital’s chicest boudoirs, Hammonds can create for you a fantasy closet worthy of Carrie Bradshaw herself. We love the clever use of natural light with overhead skylights, too. Opposite page, 177-178 Tottenham Court Road, W1 (020 7255 2166; hammonds-uk.com) Lighting is, of course, key to any successful walk-in wardrobe. Think about installing a dimmer switch to give you a full range of brightness options. The office strip

light is far less forgiving than the warming glow of your favourite restaurant, after all. You might want to consider multiple light sources if, like la Bradshaw, you can’t see the beautiful birch wood through the Manolo Blahniks. This London shoe lover’s dreams have come true with a bespoke Halstock/John Cullen Lighting collaboration that displays her fabulous footwear – and handbags – in the best possible light. Below left (01935 891 762; halstock.com and 020 7371 9000; johncullenlighting.co.uk) Not just the domain of the woman who has everything, this rather more manly fitted dressing room from Neville Johnson will appeal to well-dressed gents everywhere. Striking a chic chord between muted metallics and glitzy, mirrored shelving, we love its cool understated glamour. Behind the façade (not just a pretty one, unsurprisingly), think high-function features including deep adjustable drawers and shoe racks, hand-turned trinket shelves and hanging spaces arranged at different heights. Oh alright then, if we have to share… Top right (0161 873 8333; nevillejohnson.co.uk) Torquil McIntosh, founder of Sybarite Architects, tells us “Walk-in wardrobes work best if they are created from a room, the bigger the better.” But, where the boundaries between bedroom and closet blur, this is a seriously

smart use of storage space – perfect for a smaller pad. Love me, love my wardrobe? You can practically live in it. Above middle. Studio 1, The People’s Hall, 2 Olaf Street, W11 (020 7352 4900; syb.co.uk) And if your home is less than conventional in layout, never fear:

the 8emezzo Vanity collection can be fitted with back panels – each with a range of fittings – to create an ingenious room within a room: a versatile walk-in that grows with your not-so-capsule wardrobe. Above bottom. 565 King’s Road, SW6 (020 7731 9540; gomodern.co.uk) FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

THE LOVE DOCTOR Top tips for a great escape à deux from Rosewood London’s director of romance, Kelly Hunt PREPARE Avoid the ‘who’s to blame?’ game by ensuring you pack everything you might need, from travel documents to sun cream. LOCATION Really think about what they like – and make it somewhere truly special. White sandy beaches? Try Jumby Bay. City life? Nothing beats New York. SURPRISE Pre-order some Champagne or your loved one’s favourite food for your arrival – a well-thought out surprise always adds to the magic. FLEXIBILITY If something doesn’t go quite to plan, don’t let it ruin your trip – not everything will be in your control so relax and go with the flow. ACTIVITIES Organise an unforgettable activity that you’ll both enjoy – maybe something completely new. For some inspiration, our Valentine’s package includes a helicopter ride over London. (rosewoodhotels. com)

Love in a hot climate Candlelight, roses, overbearing serenaders… yada yada yada. For a less clichéd couples’ break, Peruvian holiday specialist Inkaterra has launched a package for intrepid lovebirds after something a bit different. Four of your seven nights will be spent deep in the Amazon rainforest, where your jungle dwelling is the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica lodge on the banks of the Madre de Dios river. If you can tear yourself away from your hammock, tropical treats include gliding across Sandoval Lake and the chance to spend a night under the stars in a canopy tree house. Then it’s off to the Inca Mecca of Machu Picchu for two nights, staying at the blissfully peaceful Pueblo Hotel. Not only will you be treated to a private sunrise tour of the ruins (major must-do box ticked), but you’ll also see the world’s largest collection of native orchids, enjoy a eucalyptus sauna and take a twilight stroll to a waterfall – perfect fodder for selfie smuggery (not that we’d be so vulgar). You’ll round off your romantic tour with a dose of culture in the Inca capital, Cusco, with two nights at the city’s first boutique hotel, the Inkaterra La Casona. After admiring the city’s fine Andean Baroque and Incan architecture, you’ll feel well deserving of a foot massage and a final traditional Peruvian dinner back at the hotel. RIO CARNIVAL

MARDI GRAS, NEW ORLEANS

TERNI VALENTINE’S FEAST

Reckon you know your Salsa from your Samba? Why not show off that Strictlyinspired sashay at the Sambódromo in Rio this month? Rio de Janeiro is undoubtedly the capital of carnival, and with sunshine pretty much guaranteed, this is the perfect way to escape a frosty February in London. To make sure you miss none of the action, we recommend the über-hip Hotel Fasano. Where Copacabana meets Ipanema, this beautiful hotel is perfectly situated to make sure you experience all the riotous rhythm of Rio. 13 to 17 February (fasano.com.br)

Mardi Gras – or ‘fat Tuesday’ – has been an official holiday in Louisiana since 1875. With more floats than you can toss a garland at, this is one extravagant street party. The only surefire remedy to the revelry is a stay at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. Housed within the palatial architecture of the 1908 Beaux Arts Maison Blanche and moments from the city’s historic French Quarter, the opulent Ritz-Carlton is the hotel de rigeur. Its all-out glamour means the only ‘lagniappe’ you’ll need is an extra day’s holiday to ease that Mardihangover. 17 February (ritzcarlton.com)

If your usual routine of flowers and chocs is starting to feel a little tired, why not liven things up in 2015? The Italian town of Terni, birthplace of St. Valentine and the original city-of-love, has been bringing lovers together for centuries with a huge 14 February feast. And, with concerts throughout the month, music really can be the food of love. What could be more romantic? Waking to the cooing of doves perhaps? Stay at Torre Palombara, a lovinglyrestored dove tower in nearby Narni, and erase all memory of last year’s Milk Tray. 14 February (torrepalombara.com) WWW.FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

As co-founder of family members’ clubs Maggie & Rose, Maggie Bolger is used to creating smart spaces for every age – her home in Kensington is no exception

How long have you lived in Kensington? Since I first moved to London 15 years ago! It has always been home to me and always will be – I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Why did you decide to buy here? I’m from New Zealand and was new to London when we first bought. This was my husband’s neighbourhood, so we decided to settle here. What do you like most about it?
It’s very central, leafy and safe, which is great for raising a family. Holland and Hyde Parks are on our doorstep, as well as the V&A, Science and Natural History Museums. It’s also really handy for the West End and Notting Hill for great restaurants and shopping. Describe the area in five words? Central, vibrant, cultural, cosmopolitan, indulgent. What are your favourite local cafés and restaurants? Our favourite is Ottoemezzo on Thackeray Street, the whole family have been going there forever.

Maggie and her brood are regular visitors to the T-Rex at the Natural History Museum (above), while if she’s seeing her friends, it’s often at the Scarsdale Tavern (below left); below right: the play area at Kensington’s Maggie & Rose, Maggie’s first family members’ club

Where do you go for an afterwork drink? I love Portobello’s Electric, or Scarsdale Tavern on Edwardes Square. Where do you like to shop? Whole Foods has everything anyone could ever need! There’s also a great little set of local shops on Stratford Road, with a green grocer, butcher (Miller of Kensington has the best meat), little cafés and corner stores Describe your perfect day here I’d start with a lie in, wishful thinking with four kids! After a lazy breakfast we’d meander down to the Natural History Museum to check out the T-Rex for the hundredth time, before a picnic lunch in Hyde Park. After the kids are all puffed out, we’d spend the afternoon watching a family flick. The evening would see my husband and I head into the West End to grab a few mojitos and tapas with friends. What did you look for in a home?
I always look for potential; a property has to be a project, something that

needs a refurb. Natural light, outside space and access are also key; I didn’t want more than a ten-minute walk to the Tube, nor to be on a 5th floor, say. Have you done much work on the property? We originally bought the garden flat, but as our family grew, our home did too; we bought and knocked into the flat above. I won’t be renovating more until the kids are much older though; with four children and their friends, damage to the flat is continuous – we dream of what we can do when they’re at university and it’s ours again! If you hadn’t chosen here, where else might you have looked?
Probably east. I get truly inspired by all the fabulous things happening in Shoreditch and Dalston. The design and industrial spaces are super cool – we get a lot of interiors ideas for the clubs from our outings east. Describe your interiors style Very eclectic; I am definitely not a minimalist! I love texture and rustic finishes, like scaff boards, vintage crates, old shutters, and reclaimed woods and metals. Nothing uniform. I love working with colour – adding wicked accents to muted tones. Finally, what’s new for you? Actually, I’m currently working on a kid’s paint range, due out next spring, which is really exciting. And, following the beautiful refurb of our Kensington Maggie & Rose club, we’re now hunting for our next site – so many families across London are asking us to open near them so the search is on!

OF THE BEST WEARABLE FITNESS TRACKERS

The smarthome Yes, we like our gadgets to look good – even ostentatious, sometimes – but we’re also rather taken by products that seamlessly deliver the goods behind the scenes, like a top class Jeeves-type figure. One example is Crestron’s home automation tech that lets you adjust all lighting, heating, security and home entertainment using simple keypads. The trouble is, installing such systems often requires a small army. Not any more. Pyng is a new off-the-shelf system comprised of a single hub that works with wirelessly-controllable switches, dimmers, thermostats, locks, security alarms and (soon) audio-visual devices. No home is too big for Pyng, and there’s an iPad app that makes it a cinch to set up and execute scenarios for activities like waking, entertaining and sleeping, as well as short or longterm absences from the home. It’s versatile enough to change its settings according to the weather, and can be activated and monitored remotely, so you could be enjoying the aprés-ski at Méribel whilst anyone outside your house will think Jay Gatsby is throwing a party inside. Take flight

Why should the professionals have all the fun with drones? There’s a growing number of enthusiasts who like to send camera-equipped remotely controlled flying vehicles up in the air for sheer fun. The DJI Inspire 1 is aimed at the serious hobbyist who wants a toy that’s clever enough to return home (or wherever you happen to be) when its power pack diminishes. Controlled by a fully-featured app, the drone has GPS navigation and a built-in camera that can rotate 360°, and can shoot video at 4K resolution and capture 12-megapixel photos. Dual operator control means you can fly the thing using one smartphone whilst your buddy operates the camera. For safe landing, sensors determine the location and altitude and lower the legs automatically. Bond would be jealous. £2,800 (DJI.com)

The great gig in the sky (/sitting room) Multi-room audio is not something we’re shy of promoting. After all, who wouldn’t want the luxury of being able to stream the same music to different rooms, and not just at party time? So we were especially excited to be invited to the recent launch of BlueSound, the world’s first such system aimed at true audiophiles, thanks to its compatibility with full resolution 24-bit/192kHz files. That means we can listen to our growing collection of downloaded albums in studio master quality. It’s like being in Abbey Road Studios with Pink Floyd recording their latest disc. There are a number of players in the BlueSound range, including the Powernode, which can be operated by an iPhone or Android app and can access Cloud-based streaming services and internet radio stations, too. £599 (bluesound.com) FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

hy St. John’s? And while we’re at it, where’s the wood? The name derives from the Great Forest of Middlesex, once owned by the Knights of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, in fact. That’s before the area was seized by Henry VIII and used as one of the portly monarch’s many hunting grounds during the dissolution of the monasteries. You won’t find much in the way of wild deer these days, but it is still relatively leafy – Regent’s Park is just around the corner, as is the equally green and lovely Primrose Hill, so it’s about as countrified as you’re going to get this close to central London. Sounds intriguing! Exactly how close to town are we talking? A mere 2.5 miles north-west of Charing Cross, making it super accessible considering it is one of the Capital’s quieter neighbourhoods. Residents enjoy direct access to Canary Wharf on the Jubilee line – unsurprisingly, the area is home to many a City worker. And for fashion freaks, Bond Street Tube station is a blink-andyou’ll-miss-it six minutes away. But, boasting its own high street jam-packed with high-end designer boutiques, St. John’s Wood can easily give the West End a run for its money in the sartorial stakes, too.

W

I certainly like the sound of that. What kind of properties are on offer? You’ll find a real eclectic mix, from the truly stunning detached mansion houses of Avenue Road down to the modest ’60s apartment blocks that make up much of the neighbourhood’s character. Of course, there are properties in between – think elegant townhouses on tree-lined streets offering ample parking and outside space. Perfect! What’s the catch? Unfortunately, everybody seems to have the same idea when it comes to location. St. John’s Wood is one of the Capital’s most desirable – and affluent – areas. Many of the mansions along the prestigious Avenue Road go for tens of millions. Even a diminutive one-bed can set you back a cool £500,000, but you can rest assured you’ll be the proud owner of one of London’s most enviable addresses – particularly if you inhabit one of the smart Victorian mansion blocks along Abbey Road. As in The Beatles’ Abbey Road? That’s the one! NW8 is in no way modest when it comes to its rock ’n’ roll credentials. Home to the world-famous recording studio of the same name, as well as the lesser-known but equally cool RAK Studios, St. John’s Wood is the place to be if you enjoy a bit of celeb

spotting, particularly those of the rock star persuasion. Be prepared to dodge the tourists, though, as they flock to Abbey Road’s iconic zebra crossing, come rain or shine, to recreate that album cover. It’s up there with poking one’s head out of a red telephone box for a piccie. Not a music fan? You might be pleased to learn Lord’s Cricket Ground is another local claim to fame. I don’t like cricket. I love it! Ah, so you are a music fan… That’s right, Lord’s is a real gem in St. John’s Wood, and it’s not just about catching the latest match either; boasting one of the oldest museums in sport, it’s a great place to get the lowdown on the history of this most English of pastimes. Of course, another very English pastime is a spot of afternoon tea, which you can indulge in at the Ground’s sophisticated Long Room if the fancy takes you. Heavenly! Oh dear, I forgot about the kids. What are the schools like? It’s easily done! But don’t fret: there are three top prep schools in the area: Saint Christina’s is predominantly for girls up to 11, Abercorn School is for two- to 13-year-old-girls and boys, and the very local boys-only Arnold House School is excellent. You might want to dress up for the school run, though. You never know who you could bump into…

SHOPPING RIGBY & PELLER Gentlemen: if you must go down the lingerie route this Valentine’s Day, allow us to point you in the direction of one of our favourite luxury lingerie establishments, in which you really can’t go wrong. Boasting 75 years of experience, Rigby & Peller – with a gem of a boutique in St.

John’s Wood – is a one-stopshop for fitting, styling advice and, honestly, that delicious feeling of being thoroughly spoilt when it comes to our all-important smalls. We all know ill-fitting undies can have a detrimental effect, not only on our look but, dang, on our mood, too, and so the whole Rigby & Peller experience, from their state-of-the-art digital body scanner to their enticing list of luxury brands, is not to be underestimated. Trust us, she’ll love it. Oh, and being the incredibly personal pursuit lingerie shopping is, gift cards are available, too. Yes, that is a hint. 23 St. John’s Wood High Street, NW8 (020 7722 2587; rigbyandpeller.co.uk)

PAMPERING JOSHUA ALTBACK Keeping St. John’s Wood well coiffed for over 50 years, it’s clear Joshua Altback isn’t just our top pick; quite the local treasure, on our visit we saw one customer eagerly book in enough appointments to see her through to 2016. It’s not hard to see why the bright and buzzy salon, which specialises

in colour, is a little black beauty book bastion. We took our much-loved tresses to see the lovely Dror – senior stylist and colourist, and L’Oreal colour trophy finalist (which, trust us, is a big deal) – a rare example of that dream hairdresser: one that follows your wishes explicitly (= no tears as hardearned inches vanish) but has all the expertise to translate any hair-brained scheme into a truly flattering, doable do. The result? A swishy, stylish cut and a definite new go-to. Readers get 10 per cent off a cut or colour with Dror until the end of February. Be bold! (It’s the new black)

Daring to be different can have its pitfalls, especially so if you’re in the business of redesigning a period property – sacred stuff to some! But fortune favours the fashionable and, with the right architectural team, you can achieve a look, both inside and out, that’s bound to satisfy even the traditional set. One such property making a serious design statement on an otherwise quiet Marylebone Street is 7 Harley Place, with its stylishly noir exterior and super-sleek contemporary look indoors. Selling agents Druce are so excited by the audacious mews house, they’ve now got their eyes on another project that, they say, will further contribute to the foundation of London as a global capital of creative architecture. Simon Hedley, director at Druce, tells us: “Clever developers are finding ways to flood mews properties with light, and to design the interiors in a way that represents the pinnacle of contemporary design, often placing the interiors at odds with the period exterior. This is opening up the appeal of such properties to a far wider range of buyers.” 7 Harley Place is now on the market for £3.5 million with Druce (020 7935 6535; druce.com) and Knight Frank (020 7499 1012; knightfrank.co.uk)

Psst… We think it’s only right that Marylebone’s most desirable new

development – The Chilterns – should attract Hollywood royalty and, frankly, you don’t get any more A-list than this Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The pair are reported to have set their sights high on the development’s £25 million penthouse, no less.

But, not to overlook those classic touches, we’re rather enamoured with the elegant marble bathroom. Do not disturb! £1.1 million, Bective Leslie Marsh (020 7795 4288; bective.co.uk)

A dream to build on DEVONSHIRE PLACE, W1G

This three-bed two storey penthouse might be perched on top of medical offices, but its location in the heart of Marylebone Village is what’s really got our ventricles going. And that’s before we’ve even mentioned the smart timber flooring, the spacious, open-plan reception/kitchen area (perfect for parties, FYI), or the master bedroom complete with en suite bath- and dressing rooms. Best of all is that planning permission has been granted to create a staircase and glazed sunroom that gives access to the flat roof, which can be landscaped to create a seriously stylish terrace with far reaching views across the Capital. Over to you… £3,999,999, Druce (020 7935 6535; druce.com)
