The definitive guide to London living
Take an immersive journey into Bob Marley’s world

FROM THE EDITOR I am a feminist, but I once ordered a red rose to be delivered to me at school on Valentine’s Day… In the intervening years, recalling the mortifying disappointment at being single, and admitting to that need to be seen as desirable has been a source of considerable internal shame. It was only talking to cover star, comedian Deborah Frances-White, that finally helped me to get that confession out on the table and laugh about it. In fact, I had so many light bulb moments during our interview, and I hope that you will find what she has to say just as fascinating. I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with Valentine’s Day: any opportunity to show our appreciation for others, or even ourselves, can’t be a bad thing, right? With that in mind, please enjoy this issue – a token of our appreciation for you, dear readers. Whether you want to indulge a loved one, or you’d like to treat yourself, it’s full of ideas to make February a little more fulfilling.

THEATRE
Wuthering Heights
3 February-19 March, Lyttelton Theatre Emily Brontë’s epic revenge tragedy sees a fresh adaptation charged with song, dance and surprises. The production opened to sparkling reviews at Bristol Old Vic in October 2021 and is a collaborative effort between Wise Children, Bristol Old Vic and York Theatre Royal. Director Emma Rice leads a cast of passionate performers including Lucy McCormick as Cathy and Ash Hunter as Heathcliff. Expect puppetry, a live band, unapologetic camp, and, ingeniously, the brooding Yorkshire Moors in human form, like a Greek chorus. South Bank, SE1 (020 3989 5455; nationaltheatre.org.uk)
EXHIBITION
Bob Marley: One Love Experience 2 February-18 April, Saatchi Gallery
As its title suggests, this is more experience than mere exhibition, taking fans of the legendary musician on an immersive journey into Bob Marley’s One Love world. And us lucky Londoners will be the first to do it: opening at Saatchi Gallery before heading off on a multi-city tour, the One Love Experience is set to go global. Cited as a sensory celebration of one of music’s most beloved and unifying figures, we’re invited to visit the Soul Shakedown Studio, to venture through the One Love Forest, and we’ll have access to previously unseen photographs and memorabilia. Bob’s daughter Cedella Marley says: “We’ve been wanting to launch a Bob Marley touring exhibit for many years and we’re thrilled to see it come to life and debut in London, which had a very special place in Daddy’s heart.” Duke of York’s HQ, King’s Road, SW3 (saatchigallery.com)

CULTURE MUSIC
Jane Birkin: Oh! Pardon tu dormais… 5 February, Barbican
The iconic singer, songwriter and actress returns to the Barbican with her band this month, the first time since 2017, for a one-off appearance to perform tracks from her 2020 album, Oh! Pardon tu dormais…. In collaboration with Étienne Daho and Jean-Louis Piérot, the album beautifully soundtracks Birkin’s life with themes of romance, tragedy and acceptance, and it weaves Birkin and Daho’s texts with Daho and Piérot’s music to create a wistful and reflective collection of ballads. Silk Street, EC2Y (barbican.org.uk)

The Collaboration 16 February-2 April, Young Vic
It is New York, 1984, and Andy Warhol’s star is falling. When the artist persuades bright young thing Jean-Michel Basquiat to collaborate, the art world watches in anticipation of ‘the greatest exhibition in the history of modern art’. Anthony McCarten’s new play imagines the story of the two iconic artists coming together as they embark on a shared journey, not only of artistic endeavour, but of the deeply personal stuff, too. Directed by the Young Vic’s own Kwame Kwei-Armah, and with Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope as the illustrious pair, we’re promised a captivating ride. 66 The Cut, SE1 (020 7922 2922; youngvic.org)

The Forest
5 February-12 March, Hampstead Theatre French playwright Florian Zeller’s dark and unsettling new drama sees its world premiere at Eton Avenue this month. The Forest is translated by Zeller’s long-time collaborator Christopher Hampton, and is directed by Jonathan Kent, who re-unites with Zeller following his criticallyacclaimed production of The Height of the Storm. The cast, which includes Toby Stephens, Gina McKee and Paul McGann, is an impressive rollcall, too. Pierre is at a turning point in his life. Tormented by the conflicting demands of family, career and sexual desire, he struggles to resolve his crisis without fracturing his marriage or indeed compromising his moral code. A gripping tale. 27 February-1 March, Somerset House With its focus on contemporary craft and design, and specifically the work of living artists in the last five years, Collect is known for its forward-looking stance. Excitingly, this year sees a physical return to the fair’s natural home, namely the beautiful rooms at Somerset House. Interior decorator and antiques dealer Max Rollitt will be taking over the Collect 2022 VIP lounge. He tells us: “Having trained as a cabinetmaker and furniture restorer, traditional craft has always been at the heart of what I do – but, as an interior designer, it’s exciting to have followed the evolution of craft and to celebrate it now as collectible artwork that is a definitive component of each and every one of my projects.” Strand, WC2R (craftscouncil.org.uk/collect-art-fair; somersethouse.org.uk)

Beatrix Potter: Drawn to Nature From 12 February, The V&A
This is the first exhibition to tell the full life story of one our most treasured children’s authors – and it promises to be both playful and interactive. Drawn to Nature will showcase over 240 of Potter’s objects, from the professional (manuscripts and sketches) to the personal (coded diaries and family photographs). The exhibition, curated in close partnership with the National Trust, follows Potter’s journey from her childhood in South Kensington to the fells of Cumbria, where she eventually settled. We’re invited to explore the writer’s fascination with the natural world, and the story of her near-accidental rise in becoming a best-selling author. Cromwell Road, SW7 (020 7942 2000; vam.ac.uk)

5 REVISION TIPS FROM HARROW SCHOOL ONLINE TUTORING An organised and mindful approach to revision will help ease the stress for your child and family that comes with the exam period. Our tips below are designed to help your child create a calm revision space around them... Include extracurricular events in revision timetables When your child is preparing their revision timetables, encourage them to include/continue with their extracurricular activities, family commitments and other important tasks alongside their schedule. This will help them to manage their time and juggle any other commitments they may have. Breaking up long revision periods with other events will also help make the exam period seem less daunting overall. Remove distractions Encourage your child to remove distractions by switching off their phone or moving it to another room during timetabled revision sessions. It will help to remove the temptation of distraction and focus their minds.
Keep things in perspective Really importantly, remind your child that whilst exams and qualifications are stepping-stones to their future, they are not the be all and end all. Be supportive there will always be options and alternative pathways that they can explore whilst at school, and in life.
Harrow School Online Tutoring is here to support during the revision period by offering revision courses for International A Level and A level Maths and Physics and International GCSE and GCSE Maths and Physics over Easter 2022 or ongoing tutoring sessions.
‘Little and often’ beats cramming Short, regular revision sessions are far more effective than spending hours trying to cram. By allocating 15-minute blocks to particular topic areas or subjects, your child will be able to stay engaged and motivated. This is especially effective when learning lists, be it French vocabulary, scientific definitions or important equations. They should also schedule regular breaks where they can get some fresh air this will enable them to be more focused for the next session. Positive reflection It really helps to think about how successful each revision session was. At the end of each session, encourage your child to list five things they’ve learnt, three things they’ll confidently remember and three things that they’re still unsure about. When they return to their notes for further revision, they can focus on filling in the knowledge gaps.

Deborah answers my call sounding flustered and asks if she can get back to me. Ten minutes later the phone rings. “So sorry about that; my ring tone is now Another One Bites the Dust,” she jokes. “I am doing a big old fundraising show tonight, and one of the guests just called and I picked up the phone and said: ‘Don’t say it, don’t say! If you don’t say it, it’s not true’. It is just one of those times…” she sighs. It is mid-December, and with Omicron case numbers soaring in London, it seems nothing is guaranteed. The stand-up comedian is keeping everything crossed that the situation will be slightly more predictable when the tour – based on her awardwinning podcast, The Guilty Feminist – goes on the road in March. “The 2022 tour is so exciting because back in – now, when was it? 2019, God, that long ago… May 2019, we toured the UK with this huge, big live show and it was such a celebration,” she tells me. “It was like feminist Christmas. It was just so wonderful, and I had the best time. We would pitch up in different cities around the UK and it was just this glorious event where everybody came out together. It felt like an army, but really positive.” This year’s tour will see Deborah appearing in 18 venues around the UK, as well as six in Australia and three in New Zealand. It opens in Brighton on 5 March and concludes back in London on 1 October at the Eventim Apollo. Though the schedule is known, the contents of each show remain under wraps. “We don’t tend to release our bills beforehand – we let the audience find out who is coming on the night,” Deborah explains. Regardless of who the guests are, though, fans will know what to expect. Funny, frank and refreshingly honest, Deborah’s award-winning podcast, The Guilty Feminist has breathed new life into conversations about feminism, amassing more than 90 million downloads since its launch six years ago and gaining a dedicated global following. Part comedy, part deep-dive discussion and part activism, each episode begins with short stories starting with the words “I am a feminist, but...”, with Deborah or one of her special guests admitting to moments where they have done or thought something that L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G

they believe a true feminist wouldn’t. “We have a pool of comedians who we work with. So, we work with Jessica Fostekew, Sara Pascoe, Susan Wokoma, Felicity Ward… Lots of people. But then we have guests. The big guests we have had, special guests, include Emma Thompson, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Adjoa Andoh – from Bridgerton, Nicola Coughlan from Bridgerton as well. This week we have got Sandi Toksvig, but we have also got Self Esteem on the bill – pop sensation of 2021. So, we really mix it up. We have pop stars, scientists, very important and famous feminists.” Recalling how it came to be, Deborah says: “It was the end of 2015. The world felt like it was shifting. There was this new movement of contemporary feminism and I wanted to be part of it, but I felt like I wasn’t good enough,” she explains. “I would see these brilliant, very strident feminists, who seemed very sure, in the media and I used to think, ‘Well, I am a feminist, but…’ I remember that one of the first ones I did was ‘I am a feminist, but this one time I went on a women’s rights march, and I popped into a department store to use the loo, and then I got distracted trying out face cream, and when I came out the march was gone,’” she recounts. “And I remember thinking that if I admitted this on a podcast, I would be kicked out of the feminist club. But, on the contrary, I realised that hundreds of thousands of women have these moments, these hypocrisies and insecurities… So, I thought, let’s put them on the table and laugh at them. Because they don’t matter. If it does matter, if you realise that it is something that is holding you back, that it is an unfeminist act, then I would still suggest we get it out. We put it on the table and look at it. Denial, or avoidance, is the maintenance of any problem.” As the name suggests, for Deborah, feeling guilty is a big part of the problem. “Women are trained to feel guilty about everything,” she proposes. “If they are a mother and they are with their kids, they feel guilty that they are not doing more for their career. And if they are working, they feel guilty that they are not with their kids. If you are a woman and you are a CEO, are you a good enough daughter and friend? You know, all of that. And I think feminism for women just becomes another thing to feel guilty about,” Deborah expands. “A friend of mine, who works in the City – in a big investment bank – said she noticed that her female colleagues would put together a project, or a big presentation, and if it was 92 per cent there, what they would focus on was the eight per cent that they didn’t get. But she noticed that men would do a project, and there would be 75 per cent of it there, and they would go: ‘There was nothing there before, and look, now there is this. Look what I did!’ And that is all sorts of social conditioning: this isn’t about men are this and women are this. We are conditioned to feel this way. So, I am training myself and other women to look at what is there. How much of that march did you attend? Because if you went on half of it, next time you might stay longer, and the next time you might get to the end. What if

you don’t though? Just show up and be counted. Who cares? Join halfway through. There are all sorts of reasons why you might not be there for the whole thing…” It is such an important message that I wonder if Deborah ever worries that the comedy trivialises it. “The thing with comedy is that it disarms people, so I would say, on the contrary, comedy makes your message accessible, sticky, easily repeatable, and it makes people take their armour off,” she tells me, confidently. “When you are trying to get a new idea through, or an idea that somebody disagrees with, if you present it as a fact and that person has already decided that they don’t agree with that, they immediately put their armour on and say that you are wrong. But if you present it as a joke, and their body recognises a truth that makes them involuntarily laugh, then immediately their armour is down, and then it makes it easier to get in. So, I think comedy is the most disarming way of making people recognise where they have blind spots, in such a way so that it does not feel like an attack. It feels like an invitation to initiate change.” When it comes to initiating change, plans are afoot for a new The Guilty Feminist format this year. “We are starting forums,” Deborah reveals. “We are going to have a panel, and with the audience, we are going to try to solve a problem. Because so many brilliant people come and sit in our audience who know things that we don’t know. So, we are going to present ourselves a problem. It is very easy to bring a hammer and knock down what is there, but what do we want to build instead? Feminism is about the kind of world that we do want. How do we want it to look? If we are not happy with something, what would we like it to be like? So, we want to do forums looking at different areas of the world and our lives, and the way power structures work, and to just try to rethink them. What would we like, hypothetically? Because that is the beginning of real-world change. So, we want the audience to get involved in that, and we want to assemble really interesting, different panels, and we want to try and solve problems together.” From episode one, the podcast has been recorded in front of a live audience, a detail that is very important to Deborah. “Honestly, it is everything to me,” she reveals. “The show was never not live. I think that is a big part of the success of it. Because the listeners at home do not just hear me and a comedian, or somebody in the public eye talking about it, they hear the audience – laughing, or gasping, or you know, responding, and asking questions. And that is important, because if you are listening at home, you think, no, it is not just me who thinks this. And it’s not just me and a couple of comedians, there’s an army of women and people of minority genders who feel like me. And that makes you feel really empowered to speak out.” Indeed, there is only one thing that has prevented Deborah and her guests from performing in front of a live audience: the pandemic. “I wish somebody had told me at the

start not to take live shows for granted, that they might disappear for a while,” she tells me. “I never thought there would be a day when the theatres would be locked. So, I will never not be grateful for being able to be in a room with The Guilty Feminist listeners. Getting back in front of them felt like a piece of me that I thought had died had come back to life. It felt like, in terms of stand-up comedy, I had stopped believing in my own talent and suddenly it was instant and back and glorious, and just incredible.” Talk of live performance brings us back to the upcoming tour – I wonder how it differs from the podcast. “The live show is more like feminist variety,” Deborah explains. “You have comics, musicians, conversation with local feminists. I sometimes say that the only thing we lack is a feminist magician, and that we need to find one who will cut a man in half and leave him there… That is a joke! We love men; please come men,” she laughs. “No, lots of men do come to the show. It has got that feel and flavour of joy, kindness, liberation and lots of laughter. While anger is a great motivator, joy is what will draw people to the movement. And joy, and happiness, and comedy and fun and laughter, those things will make the movement resilient. So, those things are not to be underestimated!” The previous tour saw some unforgettable moments for Deborah, so she is understandably excited about this one. Top of the highlights list? Probably performing at The Royal Albert Hall, she says. “The first ever woman I saw doing stand-up live was Victoria Wood at the Royal Albert Hall, and I was a student, and I remember thinking, if I ever make it – I wasn’t doing stand-up or comedy of any sort at the time, I think I was doing improvisation – this is where I will be. And, lo and behold, 2019, I was there. So, yeah, that was pretty special.” The Capital holds a special place in Deborah’s heart, and performing here will always be a treat, regardless of the venue. “I love London!” she exclaims. “I grew up in Australia and I used to read books about London all the time. I just desperately wanted to live here. I came here in the ’90s, and honestly it was like stepping off the plane into Narnia, because it was this place I had read about all my childhood, and suddenly it was real. It has just been my spiritual home ever since I first read a book set in London. I just love the atmosphere, I love the buildings, I love the buzz of the city. I love how many shows and art exhibitions and events there are on every night.
47
06_FabricFEB22_Interview Feature (DFW)_6p.indd 47
Every single night in this city there is something else wonderful happening.” It is a wonder that Deborah has the time to enjoy any of it though – aside from the tour and the podcast, it sounds like she is going to have a very busy year. “I have written a play which is being produced. I can’t really tell you any details about it, but I am very excited. I have also got some TV projects in the works,” she begins to list what 2022 holds for her. “I am an Amnesty International ambassador and I am the creative director of The Secret Policeman’s Tour, which is a live version of The Secret Policeman’s Ball, and we are building that again. I am working with Choose Love, who work in solidarity with refugees…” Days off sound rare, but should she get a day to herself, I wonder how Deborah might choose to spend it. “I think I might meet a friend for brunch in Kettner’s in the West End, before going to the National Portrait Gallery,” she muses. “And then I think I might go over to Vivienne Westwood on Conduit Street. Maybe get my hair done at FOUR London. And then come back to north London, because I live in Camden Town, and wander up Parkway and go and have coffee at the Coffee Jar. Walk up to Primrose Hill, right up to the top, and watch the sun go down on the top. And then I might go for supper at Greenberry in Primrose Hill and finish off at Blues Kitchen, that would be fun.” To book tickets to the podcast recordings, or any of the live tour dates, see guiltyfeminist.com

January is a pretty bleak month as it is, so it doesn’t take much more than a look in the mirror to send me screaming to my bed. It’s with this cheerful thought in mind that I head off to the Lisa Franklin Clinic Privé for a winter pick-me-up. I’m booked in for a CACI SYNERGY facial, commonly known as a ‘non-surgical face-lift’. Just what I need, frankly. CACI is not a new science, in fact, it’s celebrating its 30th birthday this year, but the technology is constantly being adapted and improved. I first encountered the brand over 10 years ago as I was approaching a milestone birthday, and yep, an even bigger milestone is coming up this year, so I’m turning to my old friend again for emergency help. This total skin rejuvenation treatment features all the benefits of the original ‘Lift’ treatment, but also incorporates new breakthrough S.P.E.D (Simultaneous Photo Electrical Delivery) technology that facilitates skin rejuvenation and facial toning. CACI SYNERGY is clinically proven to provide long lasting and quick results; trials show
that wrinkle depth is reduced by up to 75 per cent and skin elasticity improved by up to 88 per cent.* Lisa Franklin is an award-winning skincare expert, product developer and nutritionist, and her private clinic in Knightsbridge is possibly the most beautiful I’ve ever stepped foot inside. With comfy sofas, cool artwork, fresh flowers and even a fridge full of fizz, it’s more like a penthouse hotel suite than a clinic. Friendly staff instantly
make me feel at home and I can see why Lisa has accrued such an army of fans. My treatment lasts for one blissful hour – it is so relaxing that I spend most of that time trying not to doze off (a fruitless task in the end). Gentle microcurrents are used to lift the muscles all around the face. An LED light is a new addition since my last CACI experience: Lisa explains that it will improve skin elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines

Forget skimpy lingerie, February is far too cold for that! On our Valentine’s wish list is a gorgeous velvet dressing gown from Fabric favourite Pearl Lowe. Vintage-inspired and made to flatter and accentuate the feminine figure, these beautifully lined gowns are handmade. Utterly gorgeous, it’d be a shame to keep them for indoors only, which is why Pearl designed them with outerwear in mind, too. Now just for an occasion glam enough to justify a coat like that…

and wrinkles. I am reluctant to leave this little oasis come the end of the treatment, though I am eager to look in a mirror. I can already feel that my face feels firmer and more lifted. It is a noticeable improvement that lasts. A course of regular treatments is recommended for the most pronounced results, and for those who have particular issues, there are also targeted treatments for jowls, eyes and even hands. With a few months before my big birthday I’ll be lining up the treatments. BP

STYLE&WELLBEING WELLNESS
Nurturing a healthier lifestyle If the New Year fitness kick is already faltering, help is at hand from London duo Evren Duru (a yoga, meditation and breathwork instructor) and Sabrina Ovadya-Lenson (a personal trainer and Pilates instructor) who together created a unique holistic wellbeing concierge platform last year to help clients achieve a more sustainable, healthy lifestyle balance. A URWell membership offers access to specialists in nutritional therapy, yoga, Pilates, barre, bodyweight, strength training, HIIT, kickboxing, breathwork, meditation and pre- and post-natal fitness, all from the comfort of home. And services offered are totally bespoke to each client. The process begins with an in-depth 1-2-1 virtual consultation and assessment, covering everything from lifestyle, diet, fitness and personal goals. A tailored membership profile is then created, consisting of a month-long customised package of consultations and exercise programmes. Through their own online dashboard, clients can access fitness videos, live classes and 1-1 consultations, and keep track of what has been achieved and what is left to complete, making it virtually impossible not to succeed. From £250 per month for a Bronze package. For details, see urwell.co.uk

JEWELLERY
Doves of love Who better to create the ultimate love token than a jeweller and a bridal designer? Annoushka X Temperley London is a collection that was designed with brides in mind, but you don’t need to be getting married to appreciate these meaningful pieces, that are just as perfect for Valentine’s gifting. Alice Temperley and Annoushka Ducas were inspired by the shape of British bluebells and a Victorian dove trinket from Alice’s own jewellery box when crafting their unique collection of rings, earrings, necklaces and bracelets, L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G

all in polished, 18-carat yellow gold, with decorative combinations of pavé diamonds, pearls and gems including aquamarines and tiny hidden sapphires. We love the romantic cocktail ring, which features a sparkling aquamarine, framed by freshwater pearls and joined by two doves who appear to be drinking from an aquamarine pool, and whose folded wings, picked out in diamonds, form the outer framework.
A trip to the city of love might not be on the cards this February, but we’ll be getting our French fix in other ways. Italian-born, London-based Alfredo Piferi’s first collection for Free Lance Paris is called Back to the Roots and embraces the heritage of the forty-year-old brand, drawing on the architecture of shoe design and celebrating form and structure. Iconic biker boots, for which Free Lance is perhaps best known, feature heavily, but the hero of the collection, La Rose is a skyscraper stiletto pump. Graphic and surrealist in shape, the breathtaking heel was inspired by the rose’s thorns and elegantly highlights the shape of the ankle. We’ll take a pair in every colour. £520 (freelance.fr/en)

NEW OPENING
Bringing hedonism to Heddon Street With jaw dropping interiors, the finest DJs in the Capital and a Brazilian-Japanese menu that promises to bring the authentic tastes of São Paulo to the Big Smoke, there’s much talk around the opening of Mano Mayfair this month. And we’re expecting great things – having owned restaurants, beach clubs and night clubs on the French Riviera since he was 18, co-founder Romain Fargette knows a thing or two about winning formulas. Along with entrepreneur Alexis Colletta, he wanted to bring something unique to London, and they’ve done just that. Food will be overseen by Luciana Berry, winner of ‘Top Chef Brasil 2020’ and a MasterChef: The Professionals semi-finalist. He has designed a Brazilian-Japanese inspired menu of sharing plates including the likes of carne seca bun (dried beef in a home-made Brazilian bun); smoked picanha with yakiniku sauce (Brazil’s national steak, hickory smoked with a traditional Japanese sauce); Luciana’s signature moqueca (Brazilian seafood stew with coconut milk and grilled sea bass) and pudim (Brazilian crème caramel made with tapioca, salted miso caramel and Brazil nuts). Cocktails crafted using sake, cachaça, Brazilian mangos and other luscious tropical fruits complement the menu. Perfect for an eclectic night out, Mano will also be open for a hedonistic Jungle Brunch every weekend. 4 Heddon Street, W1B (manomayfair.com)

FOOD&DRINK LONDON FOODIE
Barry Hilton CEO CERU NEW OPENING
Blacklock takes centre stage
What’s the last thing you cooked? A Middle Eastern inspired lamb ragout using the leftover trimmings of our famous slow roasted lamb shoulder that we serve at the restaurants. I used garlic and shallots for my base stock and just went from there – in the end, there were almost twenty ingredients used (including spices and seasoning).
London’s favourite chophouse is set to open a fourth restaurant on Bedford Street in the heart of Covent Garden’s theatreland this month. Blacklock launched to rave reviews on Soho’s Great Windmill Street back in 2015, with sister sites in the City and Shoreditch following in 2017 and 2018. The newest, which is located in a building that used to house the King’s Coachmakers, is the largest to date, with space for 110 covers. Renowned for using the highest quality meat, owner Gordon Ker and his team have championed a sustainable whole-animal approach that sees them making something out of everything. Taking this concept further, Covent Garden will see new and lesser-known cuts of meat hitting the menu for the first time, including Denver and Tri-tip steaks, offering maximum flavour at a fraction of the price. All meat is sourced from long-term partner, farmer and butcher, Philip Warren, who, with a focus on regenerative farming, manages and cares for Blacklock’s herd in Cornwall to the highest standards. The new opening coincides with the start of Blacklock’s journey to B Corp status, a certification that proves a company’s commitment to purpose over profit. Blacklock’s ‘Planet Promise’ sees a tree planted for every customer who dines with them – an initiative which has so far seen over 125,000 trees planted. In addition, Cocktails That Give Back makes a donation to charity partner, End Youth Homelessness, for every cocktail sold. We’ll drink to that.
What’s your signature dish? I would normally say the slow roasted lamb shoulder mentioned in the previous question, but our new leg of rabbit dish is becoming a big hit on our new winter menu. We serve it with harissa soaked cannellini beans and a citrus juniper dressing – when I first suggested putting it on the menu, most of my team thought I had completely lost the plot, but customers absolutely love it, so that’s what matters! What do you cook on your days off? As little as possible. I spend a lot of time on new menu development as well as cooking in the restaurants, so when I’m not working, I prefer to visit other people’s restaurants, to enjoy their food and let them do the hard work for a change.
Blacklock Covent Garden will open from 7 February. 16a Bedford Street, WC2E (theblacklock.com)
Best meal you’ve ever eaten? It’s hard to say… some meals were exceptional for the company, some for the food and some for the location and setting. I particularly enjoy Japanese and French cuisines, so undoubtedly these foods would have been present somewhere in the meal.
The Blacklock promise: to use the whole animal and make something of everything, increasing sustainability
Guilty food pleasure? Crispy grilled bacon sandwich with HP sauce – has to be HP, no other brand will suffice.
VALENTINE’S GIFTING
Strawberry crush Looking to spoil a foodie loved one this Valentine’s Day? A little something from Pierre Marcolini ought to impress. The chocolatier, who has a Marylebone boutique, as well as counters in Selfridges and Harrods, was crowned ‘Best Pastry Chef in the World’ at the World Pastry Stars ceremony in 2020, so it goes without saying that his latest collection is exceptional. Honouring strawberries, the rubies of the garden, it includes chocolate boxes, patisserie and hamper assortments, all made with love. We’ve been eyeing up the Ruby Assortment, a bumper collection that includes a strawberry strewn tablet of white chocolate; a box of colourful praline and ganache hearts, in subtle flavours of passion fruit, raspberry, strawberry, salted butter caramel, and almond praline; and a showstopping Cœur à Croquer praline heart, amongst other treats. The perfect accompaniment to an evening of whispering sweet nothings… £66, available from the Marylebone boutique. 37 Marylebone High Street, W1U (eu.marcolini.com)

If you could cook for anyone, who? I have been in discussions with a very talented female chef, Dima Al-Chaar from Syria for a couple of years now, and we have talked about cooking together, but have still not got around to it for a variety of reasons (including the most obvious one). We did a similar project with Kamal Mouzawak in Beirut in 2019 – it was a great success, and it is an experience I am keen to repeat. What should no kitchen be without? I think a good team is essential and one of the key ingredients to any successful commercial kitchen. Barry and wife Patricia have offered diners a taste of Levantine cuisine from their South Kensington restaurant since 2014. Last November saw their second opening in Queensway. 11 Queensway, W2 (020 3195 3002; cerurestaurants.com)

Santosh Shah’s Thukpa Sherpa noodle soup
Fans of Masterchef: The Professionals will know Santosh Shah, who was a finalist last year, and went on to appear in the show’s Christmas special. Before hitting our screens, the chef made a name for himself cooking in the kitchens of some of the Capital’s finest restaurants, including Cinnamon Kitchen and Benares. This month sees the release of his new book, Ayla: A Feast of Nepali Dishes from Terai, hills and the Himalayas (published by DK, 3 February, £20), which is a celebration of his Nepalese roots. Ahead of the launch, we asked him to share a taste of what’s in store. Laced with warming cumin, turmeric and timmur peppercorns, this delicious noodle soup is the perfect choice for a cold February day. Santosh says: “Thukpa is a soup shared by both Nepali and Tibetan Sherpa communities. To handle the freezing winters in high altitude, their diet is heavily based on carbohydrates.”
INGREDIENTS 100g soba noodles/egg noodles | 3 tbsp vegetable oil | ½ tsp hing (asafoetida) | 300g free-range chicken breast, finely chopped | ½ tsp ground turmeric | 50g finely chopped carrots | 180g finely chopped mixed (bell) peppers | 50g thinly sliced green French beans | 80g finely shredded white cabbage | 1 tsp salt | 800ml chicken stock | 2 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped | 1 lemon, quartered, to serve For the spice paste 1 large garlic clove | 4 tsp finely chopped fresh ginger | 4 fresh green chillies, roughly chopped | ½ tbsp cumin seeds, dry roasted | 5 timmur peppercorns, or Sichuan peppercorns | ¼ tsp black peppercorns | 1 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped | 1 small tomato, deseeded and chopped METHOD 1. Start by making the spice paste. Place all the
ingredients for the spice paste except the tomato in a small food processor or electric spice grinder. Blend until you get a paste. Add the chopped tomato and blend again. You should get a smooth spoonable paste. You can make this paste in advance and keep it in the refrigerator for 2–3 days or in the freezer for 1 month. 2. Cook the noodles according to the packet instructions and set aside. 3. Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the hing and cook for a few seconds. Add the chicken and cook for 5 minutes, until slightly golden. Add the turmeric and cook for 1 minute. 4. Add all the vegetables and stir-fry for a couple of minutes. Stir in the salt and spice paste until all the ingredients are well coated. Cook for a couple of minutes. 5. Pour in the chicken stock, bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Add the noodles and cook for a couple of minutes, just enough to reheat them. 6. Adjust the seasoning to taste, add the chopped coriander and serve with lemon quarters for squeezing over.

Celebrate love the Indian way This Valentine’s Day, St. John’s Wood restaurant Ritu Seasons of India is celebrating the richness of love, and everybody is invited Valentine’s Day can be a beautiful reminder of everything that makes our relationships rich. Perhaps you use it as an opportunity to show that extra bit of love to your partner, or to reminisce about your favourite memories together. For many Indians, this day of love is yet another opportunity to look back on the wedding celebrations that united them with their partners. This February, St. John’s Wood restaurant Ritu Seasons of India will be highlighting the beauty of Indian weddings through their Valentine’s Day offerings. Whether customers have never experienced an Indian wedding, or want to relive their own wedding day, Ritu invites them to taste, smell, see and hear the vibrancy that defines these celebrations of love. Like a traditional Indian wedding, Ritu will be celebrating across three days, finishing with a bang on Valentine’s Day. On offer will be a rich four-course tasting menu, packed with lavish Indian wedding favourites, from exciting starters through to decadent desserts. Culinary Director Navin comments: “Indian food is really designed for sharing, which is why it tends to be the centrepiece of our wedding celebrations. It’s a
reflection of the joy and love shared by all parties involved, not just the bride and groom.” Ritu will also be embracing the bright decorations involved in Indian weddings, dressing the restaurant in traditional red and gold as though it were hosting its own unity of love. No Indian wedding is complete without a packed entertainment itinerary and this celebration will be no different. Guests will be able to immerse themselves in the magic of Bollywood, complete with exquisite costumes, colours and music. But it is the people who really make the celebration. Owner Anubhav explains: “Indian weddings would be nothing without the huge numbers of people on the guest list. It’s a celebration between extended relatives and members of the community, alongside family and friends.” With this in mind, Ritu’s three-day celebrations have not just been planned with romantic dates in mind, the Valentine’s Day themed occasion will also act as a tribute to the community and the love held between families and friends. So, this February, everyone is invited to Ritu in St John’s Wood to celebrate love the Indian way. Book your table today, call 020 3857 2754. 1 Blenheim Terrace, NW8 (ritu.london)

SEASIDE ESCAPE
Contemporary coastal The sleepy Sussex seaside town of Eastbourne is having a moment. A cutting-edge art gallery, a growing foodie scene and an eclectic mix of independent stores are appealing to a whole new generation of visitors, and the town’s newest boutique hotel has added serious cool clout, too. Situated in a Victorian townhouse on the Royal Parade, just a stone’s throw from the beach, Port offers 19 luxurious bedrooms and a sensational restaurant and bar. Lovingly restored, the hotel’s calming décor takes inspiration from its surrounds – sea-facing rooms draw on a pebble-like palette with putty and stone toned walls, whilst back rooms, that overlook the town and South Downs, embrace colours from nature in shades of sage and moss green. Tapping into the renowned local art scene, artist JFK Turner’s work, giving new life and form to found objects, is on display in communal areas. Head chef Alex Burtenshaw has designed a menu that proudly showcases Sussex, with most ingredients sourced from within 30 miles of the hotel. And putting locally sourced food at the heart of Port’s dishes is all part of a wider desire to support Sussex businesses; in the bar, artisanal brands stocked include Gun Brewery beers, Ditchling Gin, Rathfinny Estate sparkling wines, Bolney wines and Chilgrove spirits. A seaside sanctuary, we think Port is a great spot from which to explore this buzzy resort. From £100 per room per night. For more details, see porthotel.co.uk

Travel-tech sits central to recognising this generation’s desire for both speed and flexibility in how they book their travel; Little Emperors is leading the way in integrating technology and automation, whilst still providing a luxurious and personal service.
3. Multi-generation travel

THE HIDDEN GEM OF THE MED Offering culture, adventure and a rich history, Malta has much to offer, and the Iniala Harbour House is the perfect base for exploring WORDS by PENNY CLEMENTS
T
he warm salty air is the first thing that hits me as I step off the plane: the sensation brings back happy memories of holidays past and makes me all the more excited for this one. Blue skies stretch far over the horizon with just a few fluffy clouds overhead. Located in the shimmering, azure waters of the Mediterranean sea, this ancient archipelago is home to some of Europe’s oldest buildings in an eclectic mix of architectural styles influenced by its rich history. From sampling gourmet culinary delights and relaxing on the pristine sandy beaches, to exploring its well preserved medieval fortresses and contemporary art museums, Malta promises a truly unforgettable trip (not least because the country enjoys 3,000 hours of sunshine every year). My hotel, the Iniala Harbour House, is just a 15-minute drive from the airport. It is set in an exquisite Maltese townhouse that was once a bank, and overlooks Valletta’s famous Grand Harbour; an idyllic location between the city’s waterfront and the higgledy-piggledy historic streets of St. Barbara Bastion. The hotel is the latest offering from British entrepreneur Mark Weingard and it is an intriguing design mix of heritage and contemporary style. With its golden stone façade and royal blue balconies (known locally as gallarijas), the exterior blends seamlessly with its neighbours in Valletta’s historic walled city. It is inside where

TRAVEL From the Michelin-starred restaurant to the sublime subterranean spa, the Iniala Harbour House offers unprecedented levels of luxury
the designers, Autoban – a design studio in Istanbul – have made their mark, creating a cool, contemporary space that subtly references the city’s heritage with bespoke artwork and tailormade lighting and furniture. Facilities include a cave-like, guest-only bar, 23 beautiful boutique rooms, a holistic spa, an ultra-contemporary gym and a Michelin-starred restaurant. When it comes to somewhere to rest your head, each room at Iniala has been exquisitely designed. My suite offers a huge and inviting bed, a walk-in wardrobe, a cosy lounge area and a view onto the quiet, pretty streets below. In the bathroom there is a double rainfall shower and divine-smelling Diptyque amenities. Every detail is luxurious and considered, with comfort key to the design. For an even more special stay, I’m told that the 156 sq m presidential suite offers the ultimate in accommodation – the exclusive space comes complete with kitchen area, plunge pools and private terraces with expansive views over the azure waters to the ancient city of Birgu. You don’t have to be in the penthouse to make the most of the views, though – on the hotel’s rooftop perches ION The Harbour. One of the most talked about restaurants in Malta, it is also one of only five here to be awarded a Michelin star. With low lighting and widely spaced tables, the vibe is cosy and intimate. At night-time the sweeping views of the twinkling harbour lights create a truly magical backdrop. A menu of fresh and luxurious flavours has been designed by executive chef Alex Dilling and the kitchen is overseen by Seumas Smith, who joined as head chef last year from Iniala Beach House in Thailand. The visually exquisite and utterly delicious dishes include the freshest Bavarois oysters from Normandy; sea bass in brown butter sabayon; a very special Hunter chicken that is lovingly prepared over three days; and a to-die-for Taïnori chocolate dessert with Gozo sea salt and caramel. A wide selection of wines, Champagne, and cocktails accompanies the menu.
The restaurant also provides a truly spectacular spot for breakfast. On the menu is the standard fare (although there is nothing standard about the quality), including a fry up that is playfully named the Full Brexit, along with more unusual offerings such as shakshuka eggs and nasi goreng. Much love has clearly been poured into Iniala Harbour House, and nowhere more than at the subterranean Essensi Spa, where I seek some well-earned time-out. Small and discreet, it is housed in the former bank’s vault. A luxurious and calm oasis, here, as in the rest of the hotel, detail is everything. The lighting in this herbal-smelling hideaway has been carefully considered; warm, glowing lanterns lead guests peacefully from room to room, and the calming yellow lighting around the sleek vitality pool and stone walls is reminiscent of pure gold. An impressive array of treatments are on offer, with everything from facials to grounding reflexology sessions, but it is the bespoke body massages that really stand out. The aromatic treatments use home-blended oils that are only available here in the spa, and are laced with local, botanical ingredients. In combination with the signature massage techniques, which concentrate on using pressure to gently ease tense muscles, they appear to have utterly transformative properties, calming my mind and boosting my mood. While the massage leaves me feeling both relaxed and energised, the oils soften and hydrate my winter skin. The approach is tailored and individual, and feels beautifully intuitive – giving me a real sense that someone is responding to my body’s unique needs. Not wanting to rush out afterwards, I enjoy

a signature spa tea in the relaxation room and enjoy a dip in the pool before strolling back to my room in the exceptionally cosy, cocoon-like robe and slippers. I have never felt quite so relaxed. For such a small and compact island, Malta’s offering is rich and I spend a few happy days exploring. The sightseeing is complemented with deliciously prepared food, luxurious pampering and warm hospitality at Iniala. I feel I could stay for life. With homeworking now a thing, perhaps I should… Rooms at Iniala Harbour House start from €350 per night and Residences from €2,000. Iniala experiences vary depending on the season. Whether residential or commercial, planning the layout of a space is the first stage of any interior work Spatial planning is a crucial first step, whether you’ve got designs on an ornate Georgian orangery or you’re planning a dream contemporary kitchen to suit your new-build apartment. It enables the space to be functional and practical yet aesthetically pleasing. It also allows you to carefully budget for the project, taking into consideration bespoke items such as inbuilt joinery – and to think about which furniture pieces, fixtures and equipment you need to buy. With any space it’s important to ask questions such as, what’s the use of the space? Is this a social area for the family? What equipment is needed for it to function? London-based interior design studio Nefarious Design works closely with clients during this all-important first step. Once these questions have been answered, they will roughly sketch the space,

seated location in the room. Whatever your budget or size of project, Nefarious are on hand from the spatial planning stage and throughout the whole design process to help realise your dream space. Nefarious Design, Studio 6, Fairbank Studios, 65-69 Lots Road, SW10 (020 3793 2216; nefariousd.com)
highlighting where the entrance, windows, architectural features, and electrical points are located. They then look at different possible layouts to give the client options on what’s best suited to their needs and the way in which they live. An example of this his can be seen in the final feasibility sketch for a recent Georgian drawing room project. In this sketch, the entrance dictates how the client will enter and exit the space and will determine where furniture can be placed. Windows will be the only source of natural light, which means that you can predict where any dark areas are located for floor or accent lighting. Architectural details, such as original fireplaces, could be a feature you’d like to celebrate so ensuring these are not blocked can also help in spatial planning. Electrical and data points need to be highlighted, too, for placement of any electrical equipment such as TVs, integrated lighting, and

If the pandemic’s had you cheating on fashion with interiors, you’re in good company. Brit designer Alice Temperley’s latest looks were born out of staying in. Inspired by a search for the perfect rug – and a childhood game of Moving House – Floored is an exquisite capsule carpet collection featuring prints taken straight from the Temperley London catwalk. Crafted from pure English lambswool, the luxurious rugs and runners are pattern-rich and explode with vibrant colour.
This month, London design studio Ceraudo unveils a playful fabric and furniture range inspired by the Orphism art movement, and more specifically, the work of French abstract artist Sonia Delaunay. Designed in-house by sisters Emily and Victoria Ceraudo, the Orpha collection comprises an armchair, slipper chair, dining chair, cushions and a rug. Upholstered in the painterly fabrics, these statement pieces are wonderfully imaginative in both pattern and shape.

SCENTS OF OCCASION Scentscaping is the art of using fragrance to craft a unique journey through our homes, boosting mood and wellbeing. We caught up with Linda Pilkington, perfumer extraordinaire and founder of Ormonde Jayne, to find out more WORDS by ALI HOWARD

Ensuring that every product created is perfect, everything is manufactured in the Ormonde Jayne laboratory in London
Can you tell us a little bit about scentscaping and how it can transform our homes?
We offer clients at our boutique complimentary consultations, advising them about the art of scenting the home in order for each area to declare its own individuality. We ask them which scents they like, and to describe their space; for instance, does it have high ceilings, what is the climate, is it a room where they entertain frequently or are they scenting a smaller private office? We have some fragrances that simply lift out, singing and shining, and you wouldn’t want that in your guest bathroom, but it would be perfect for a drawing room.
What are the health benefits?
When you return home from a hard day’s work, a welcoming scent can create a different atmosphere that helps you to disassociate from the outside world. The wonderful thing is that this happens without you even having to try: our sense of smell is incredibly powerful and immediate. Handled by the olfactory bulb in the front of the brain, odours are processed through our limbic system to the regions that relate to memory and emotion. This all happens in an instant, so sometimes that familiar waft of our favourite scent, whether it’s an amberesque rose or a woody cedarwood, effectively prompts us out of work mode and into a safe, secure world of comfort. When we choose a scent associated with happy times, it contributes to our emotional health.
What’s the connection between scent and nostalgia?
It’s scientifically proven that when you smell an aroma from your past, the cortical areas in your brain, controlling emotion and memory, are activated. A happy example of this is the nostalgia you feel on detecting a certain scent from a childhood holiday. If you happen upon this specific scent again, it can have an immediate positive, uplifting effect. That emotion can resurrect itself effortlessly in a very vivid way, especially as the memories associated with smells tend to be older and rarely brought up. When it comes to smells, we can be influenced at a subconscious level and not necessarily realise it. L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G

Ormomde Jayne founder Linda Pilkington believes that scent can be an important tool, helping to improve emotional health
Which fragrances work best in different areas of the home?
In the entrance hall, depending on the size, I would place one of our original reed diffusers. Ormonde is our house signature scent, an unconventional woody fragrance with cardamom and cedarwood – it’s the only fragrance in the world that contains black hemlock and has loyal fans across the globe. Another favourite for halls is Maison Royal, using a time-honoured accord of rose, jasmine and warm amber. Both scents spell out: Welcome Home! The creamy rich floral notes of Frangipani work so well in a drawing room. It’s one of my favourites, and a particularly attractive formulation with magnolia flower, lime peel, white frangipani, jasmine and plum. Another scent that works well in living rooms, although with a very different effect, is Ta’if. The ta’if rose is extraordinary, blooming in the intense dry heat of the Arabian desert, so it’s incredibly resilient in nature. Our formulation uses saffron, dates, orange blossom, broom and amber and it creates a sophisticated, seductive and opulent atmosphere. The kitchen/dining room is an area that needs a lot of attention as you won’t want an intense scent while you’re eating. I recommend Casablanca Lily with bergamot, lime and lily as either a scented candle or a mini reed diffuser. While you’re dining it’s nice to enjoy the aromas of the food without distraction. You wouldn’t want a particularly strong scent in the bedroom, either, but it’s nice to have a very light presence. I’d recommend one of our Sampaquita candles, or our new Peony candle, which scents the room without even being lit. It’s subtle but ever present. For the bathroom I’d choose a soothing scented candle like Champaca. This is one of our first fragrances made with basmati rice, bamboo, neroli and champaca absolute – a tiny pale orange flower from India. It’s deeply comforting, and at the same time, sophisticated and unusual. And in the home office I’d recommend a Montabaco mini diffuser. It’s a soothing, sensual fragrance and the soft leather and amber notes partner perfectly.
Looking forward to spring, what would you recommend to bring the outside in?
When the first signs of spring and new buds appear, I would choose Casablanca Lily to bring in the new season. It’s uplifting with notes of bergamot, lily and lime, with a great yield. Our new candle Peony is also fabulous for spring, centred on one of my all-time favourite flowers. I also created a recipe for Camellia Rosewater Cupcakes on my blog Gourmande Jayne, which fills our house with a delicious fragrance, not to mention the delicious cupcakes! ormondejayne.com

AT HOME WITH Shalini’s glamorous St. John’s Wood home, with its gallery-like open spaces, is full of surprises
“How you feel in your space is crucial to your wellbeing and prosperity: fluid layouts, ample natural and enhanced light, good organisation – and reducing what you have to what you need, enjoy and find valuable, are all key elements,” Shalini tells me. Her holistic approach to design is clear. And it’s apparent in every inch of the magnificent St. John’s Wood abode that she shares with her husband and youngest daughter, alongside the family cat and golden retriever. The detached, five-bed Victorian house is at once grand and cosy, mixing impressive, gallery-like open areas with pockets of private space. With clever use of glass partitions and screens, larger rooms can be opened up or sectioned off to suit the mood and occasion. “From the exterior, the house is smart, elegant, quite uniform and symmetrical – and inside it is full of surprises,” Shalini enthuses. To fully realise her vision, the designer needed to play around with the floor plan. Structurally, the house has undergone a significant overhaul, taking it from its traditional layout with lots of smaller, separate rooms, to a more contemporary space that celebrates flow. “We opened up the house by removing part of the ground floor so that we have a double height space between the lower ground floor and ground floor,” Shalini explains. “We installed two new staircases as architectural features and extended the lower ground floor at the back. We added glass doors along most of the back of the house on the lower ground floor, bringing in an enormous amount of light

and air. We made it more suitable for contemporary living and we connected the house more to the garden.” Outside space is a must: “I think that is really important, especially in a city – and if you can’t have a garden it’s important to be near a park.” In opening up the property’s interior space and inviting the daylight in, Shalini is able to appreciate the garden from her favourite spot in the family room – whatever the weather. “There are floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, which open out to a terrace and the garden beyond. The natural light in this room is exceptional, it’s so bright and it makes the room feel fresh and airy all the time,” she says. “I can observe the seasons from here.” But as much as this is a place of tranquillity and quiet contemplation, the designer uses it for professional inspiration, too. “Nature inspires my work”, she explains. “From the colours and patterns to the shapes and textures, so I really enjoy using this room to work in when I work at home. Even if I’m not directly influenced by nature, enjoying it and being close to it invigorates me.” Describing her style as “richly layered”, Shalini mixes gleaming metallics with earthy materials, while plush velvets are met with cool marble. The look is modern glamour incarnate. What’s particularly impressive – and a common thread throughout the property – is the designer’s meticulous attention to detail. “The interior is created from beautiful materials with many handcrafted elements,” she says. “My team and I did some in-depth research of British crafts and techniques, which you can see through hand-wrapped leather balustrades, marquetry on cupboard doors and bespoke patterned marble flooring. It is a space with countless artistic elements to catch your eye and admire.” Shalini believes in a sympathetic approach when it comes to period architecture and argues that as an interior designer, it’s her job to respect original features in any property. “I love the historical side of buildings,” she explains. “I often reinstate period features into properties that have had them removed over the years. Changing trends and attitudes have meant that period details were stripped from a lot of houses but
L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G

Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors in the family room flood the space with light and open it up to the garden
I think this is a very important part of our design history and we should respect it. Period details show the craftsmanship of a certain time, and this is an insight into what was important stylistically.” Period fixtures – grand fireplaces, ornate cornicing, and stately ceiling roses – feature heavily here and, in keeping with Shalini’s shrewd eye for detail, the cornicing and roses are hand-painted in gold, echoing the gilded elements in the modern lighting and the designer’s luxurious furniture choices. The mix of old and new is sassy yet seamless. Citing sustainability as a core concern, Shalini says she aims for every piece, finish and decoration to be something of value, both artistically and emotionally, “So that these pieces of furniture and decorative objects will be passed on to other generations carrying stories with them.” It is no surprise, then, that the designer loves to incorporate pre-loved antique pieces alongside her go-to high-end European brands. “I’m always on the lookout for interesting designs and pieces on my travels,” she says. “In London I love visiting Alfies Antique Market and the surrounding dealers as there are always so

many interesting vintage furniture and lighting pieces to discover. 1stDibs is great for vintage and antiques pieces as well,” she reveals. “I love Nilufar Gallery in Milan, which we collaborated with on a Mayfair apartment project. I also love the Italian brands Baxter and Promemoria. Italy has such a strong furniture design industry and the quality of these two brands is excellent.” Shalini’s home is a showcase for her design prowess, a dream of a property that, like any given one of her projects, expertly combines craft, colour, technique, technology, materials, textures, shapes and volumes to create a harmonious composition. “These are aesthetic, tactile and practical elements all tied together,” she explains. “My home shows these values through the use of intricate craftsmanship, reupholstered furniture pieces that we have loved and continue to use for years, natural materials, beautiful details and a visual and tactile warmth throughout the space. There are so many interesting pieces to look at. Comfort is, of course, key. My interiors are inviting and I want everyone to feel great comfort in them.” shalinimisra.com

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
We discover why St. Anthony’s Boys’ and Girls’ Schools are working more closely together when it comes to curriculum planning, teaching and learning, pastoral support and co-curricular activities, especially in the creative arts
At both St. Anthony’s schools, children are valued as individuals and encouraged to be intellectually curious
T
here are many advantages to single-sex education – not least that boys and girls are encouraged to be themselves and cultivate interests not stereotypically associated with their sex. At the St. Anthony’s schools, girls flourish in Maths, Technology and Science whilst boys happily sing in choirs, perform in plays and attend book clubs. The Catholic ethos that every child is a unique and imbued with specific gifts infuses everything the schools do. Both school communities encourage pupils to love their neighbours and respect everybody. The common aim is to nurture children who are intellectually curious and who genuinely love learning. The staff at both schools recognise that the worth of every child is more than can be narrowly defined by grades – in fact, the evidence of pupils’ senior school destinations shows that a ‘holistic education’ pays high dividends. Boys and girls at both schools have benefited enormously from the pooling of resources and staff expertise. One example of cooperation-in-action has been the setting up

of a Reception Hub, where Reception teachers from SASB and SASG meet to discuss lesson plans and activities, assessments and learning support – for those children who require either more scaffolding, or stretch and challenge. Such coordination and discussion have led to a smoother transition for both children coming from nursery and those starting full-time school for the first time. Additionally, the setting up of a co-ed nursery at St. Anthony’s Girls’ in September 2021 has proved to be hugely popular with parents, who recognise the long-term social and educational benefits of introducing boys and girls to each other in a learning context as early as possible. The nursery curriculum draws much from the EYFS (early years framework) and is also designed to prepare the children for more rigorous academic tasks undertaken from Reception onwards. The vast majority of boys and girls in St. Anthony’s nursery will progress to Reception at either the boys’ or girls’ schools. Entry is not automatic, but the children are well-placed to sit the 4+ assessments and are given priority admission. January 2022 has seen the launch of St. Anthony’s Plus, which is a pre-nursery programme for boys and girls from birth to 3 years. It aims to prepare children for the transition to nursery by providing a personalised programme that has been
carefully designed by early years specialists to support a child’s cognitive, social and emotional development. The programme consists of a digital learning package, guidance for parents on themes including sleep, nutrition and behaviour management, and a weekly face-to-face teacher-led session. When the boys and girls reach their single-sex prep school, increasingly there are opportunities for them to interact with each other in the creative arts and through academic societies such as debating and critical thinking. Girls are routinely interviewed by St. Anthony’s Boys’ staff as part of the senior school application process, and vice-versa for boys going through 11+ and 13+ applications. The autumn term musical concert was a joint activity as was the Carol Service. A parent webinar focusing on Digital Awareness will be shared by families at the boys’ and girls’ schools. The two schools will continue to offer the best of both worlds, where boys and girls can start their learning together before moving to single-sex prep schools, which builds confidence and fosters communication within the wider St. Anthony’s community, and as preparation for life beyond. MEET THE LOCALS
Suzi Winstanley Owner, West Town
We have been living in Westbourne Grove for over 20 years. Our daughter went to the Spanish school, Instituto Espanol Canada Blanch on Portobello Road from the age of five. Since we’ve been here, some of our old favourite restaurants and shops have gone, but more recently, new little spots are taking their place in the neighbourhood, alongside some of the great shops and restaurants that thankfully still remain. There is so much choice down Westbourne Grove alone: Bill Granger’s consistently excellent restaurant, the relaxed and casual 202, two favourite Lebanese restaurants Al Waha and the soon to reopen Fresco, as well as Taqueria, where they serve really good Mexican food and tequila. Just around the corner is the Ottolenghi deli and café, and my friend recently took me to the Tin Shed on All Saints Road, where they serve gorgeous breakfast, brunch and lunch. We are very lucky to live close to Hyde Park and Holland Park and all along the elegant, tree-lined Holland Park Avenue there are yet more fine specialist delicatessens, cafés and shops. With its classy drinks and treats, Jeroboams is the perfect place to buy presents and Michanicou Brothers greengrocers and fruit sellers on Clarendon Road is just old school and brilliant! Some of our friends own fantastic shops around the neighbourhood, too…. Rockins, and Universal Providers by Kokan To Zai on Golborne Road, and Supra, a bit further out, but close to Kensal Rise station – are all unique, very cool shops, definitely worth visiting. Also, Honest Jon’s the record shop and Portobello Road Market (especially on Fridays) are both endlessly great places to revisit. Our intention in West Town is to provide a platform for artists: painters, photographers, musicians, designers of fashion, furniture, fabrics, printed mirrors, jewellery and more. And, a place to present and promote an expansive, interesting and beautiful range of original artworks, prints and posters, records and books, mirrors and glassware, instruments and toys, clothes, accessories and many other pieces – both vintage and new – all of which we have sought out and carefully selected from the UK and around the world.
Daniel Taylor, Savills
“Demand in this enclave remains strong, with a large percentage of the market driven by the desire for outside space – and Notting Hill offers that in abundance with its garden squares and proximity to Hyde Park. With access to excellent schools and independent shops and restaurants, we expect Notting Hill to remain a popular area, and for property values to continue to increase as a result of positive sentiment.”
Toby Simmonds, Dexters
“Now that it’s cold outside, I’d definitely recommend a visit to the Electric Cinema on Portobello Road. This quirky theatre has sofas for two and attracts celebrities like Benedict Cumberbatch and Rita Ora. You can forget the popcorn and Pepsi and treat yourself to a plate of mezze and a glass of wine, delivered straight to your seat.”

WELL PLAYED At Hawkesdown House School, an independent preparatory school and nursery in leafy Kensington, the curriculum is enriched through teamwork, fun and sportsmanship Hawkesdown House is a school with a strong voice and an adventurous spirit. High academic standards are matched with creativity, flair and imagination in a broad curriculum, which has been designed to challenge and inspire. Excellent teaching encourages a love of knowledge and independent thinking. Sport, music and drama are all carefully integrated into the school week. Beyond the academic rigour of the core subjects, much emphasis is placed on extracurricular activities – all pupils from Year 1 learn judo, all pupils from Year 2 are taught chess and all pupils learn fencing from Year 3. This enrichment of the curriculum provides a productive break from academic work, while helping children to build their skills outside the classroom. Research confirms the considerable benefits of extracurricular activities in enhancing a sense of belonging and helping students to develop positive feelings towards their education, reducing their odds of failure. At Hawkesdown this is evident in the excellent results and in the open, thoughtful and happy children. Sarah Gillam, Head at Hawkesdown House School tells us: “Children respond positively to learning when it is made relevant and engaging and where creativity is nurtured.” Hawkesdown House is a dynamic school where people are kind, considerate and capable and where children can start their school lives happily, making early friends with confidence. The School has high academic standards and inspires and challenges minds and the imagination. Staff know each child and understand what is important for them. Both parents and children are fiercely loyal to this Hawkesdown philosophy. To arrange a school tour, call 020 7727 9090 or email admin@hawkesdown.co.uk (hawkesdown.co.uk)

THOUGHT
It’s tutoring, but not as you know it
T
he pandemic has driven the demand for many things, including tutors to help children catch up on lost learning. In research by Cognita Tutoring, 80 per cent of parents said it’s increased their requirements for tutoring. It’s also turbocharged the trend for EdTech, and made remote learning acceptable. “This shift has taken away geographic restrictions, so parents can now pick from a huge catalogue of tutors to find the best one,” says Ian Thistlewood, General Manager of Cognita Tutoring. “It’s enabled companies like ours to teach 100 per cent online – supported by AI technology that adjusts a child’s learning path to suit their individual needs.”
There’s more to successful tutoring than the right teacher and technology, though. For Ian, the “virtuous triangle” is when pupil, teacher and tutor come together to make a real educational impact. “We can give teachers access to our online classroom, so they’re aware of how the pupil is progressing,” he explains. “We hope it’ll help them to see tutoring as a complement to, not competition for, in-class learning.” What’s more, tutoring won’t only help children catch up on lost learning. Being out of school for long periods has denied them of socialisation, sometimes at key transition points. Having someone dedicated to helping them learn can build their confidence, which in turn helps them to perform in class. “That’s why we train our tutors in what resilience, character and confidence-building in children looks like,” says Ian. “Because confident, self-assured children make better learners.” Tutoring clearly has a lot to offer. But in an unregulated industry, it’s important to choose with care. Ian has these tips: Choose a tutor with a qualification in teaching. They’ll have experience of teaching and learning, understand the child’s needs and know the curriculum. Ask to see evidence that safeguarding checks have been done. Ask about their approach to wellbeing and character as well as academic results. Decide how you want to interact with the tutor. Ours write a mini report at the end of each session, and use the end of every sixth session as a mini parents’ evening. cognitatutoring.com

Bassett House School How would you sum up Bassett House in a sentence? A traditional, high-performing school in London with an innovative soul. What makes it different? Six pillars, which are crucial to life now and in the future, thread through our curriculum: sustainability, creativity, emotional intelligence, digital curiosity, global citizenship, and service leadership. Through a strong academic focus and a thirst for knowledge, we forge strong neural pathways for pupils who develop a life-long love of learning. How would you describe the atmosphere at the school? There’s always an inimitable Bassett buzz. Our pupils are interested, interesting and intellectually curious. As a 2021 Bassett graduate put it: “At Bassett, you are taught Maths and English brilliantly. But more than that, you are taught how to be yourself.” The Bassett Team have a talent for taking pupils’ talents and polishing them to a high shine. How do you balance your extra-curricular activities with the academic side? The world is changing, so it’s more important than ever that a rigorous education doesn’t squeeze out a strong moral framework and a rounded curriculum which sets pupils up for a bright future. We’re very proud of our arts offering as well as our unbeaten sports seasons. Excellence and leadership manifest in many forms; that’s why we develop Young Sports Leaders and are creating our own art scholarship programme. Our wraparound care features everything from sugar paste club to fencing, with something on offer for everyone. Bassett Road, W10 (020 8969 0313; bassetths.org.uk)

Looking beyond portals Professional Property Finder, Deborah Stanton, explores why house hunters might not be getting a full picture of the London property market just by looking online It wasn’t too long ago that buying a house involved walking down the high street to visit every estate agent. Today, when buying a property, most of us set up a search on a property portal and then leave the computer to tell us what we can buy. Much easier, we presume and a great way to see all the market has to offer - or is it? There is no doubt that property portals are a valuable tool to provide a high-level view of the market; indicating what's coming on, what's sold and at what price and what is not selling at all. However, home buyers need to be careful not to become over reliant on the internet as they do not always represent a true reality of what is really happening in a particular area. Whilst the impressive speed of technological advancements has certainly helped property purchasers, there are some common misplaced beliefs which may be limiting a buyers success for finding the right property. Everything for sale is on the property portals Property portals consist of a vast database of properties and most estate agents do advertise the majority of their client’s property for sale on these sites however, not everything is marketed online and in a fast-moving market, some properties simply sell before they’re even advertised. Some properties are never destined to be advertised, as the owners prefer to sell
because the vendor is bullish, or the sales agent has valued high to gain the instruction. Secondly, by restricting yourself to a tight price bracket you miss the opportunities, that with a bit of imagination or clever negotiation could prove to be your ideal home.
Deborah Stanton
discreetly away from prying eyes. Others are expected to be publicised as prime opportunities but are offered to a select few proceedable buyers in the first round of activity, then get snapped up before the wider world is aware. Portals show you what you can buy for your budget A typical buyer using a property portal to research what they can afford to buy will enter a budget range +/-10% of their top budget, and review the results accordingly and then tick the box asking for notifications of future properties entering the market in this price bracket. The problem with this approach is twofold; firstly, new houses entering the market can sometimes be overpriced and so what you are seeing may not be a true picture of a property's value - perhaps
There is 'nothing to buy' We have already established that not everything for sale is on property portals. But one of the consequences of this situation is that when homeowners toying with the idea of selling their homes take a quick look online, they are disheartened by what is shown as available to buy. It can be useful, if you’re in this position, to talk to a property professional who can provide you with a clearer idea of what’s really happening on the ground. Everything you need is on-line Over the past few years, the property market has adapted, and many parts of the process have moved to a digital format, with valuations and viewings continuing to be done via video call when preferred. In the current climate however, buyers might realise they are missing out on opportunities that require a more traditional approach to finding a home. Furthermore, despite advances in technology, there still really isn’t anything that can compare to seeing a property in person or having a professional to view on your behalf.
If you are considering your property options and would like more information on how to better navigate the London property market, contact Deborah to arrange a no obligation discussion. 020 7099 2773

Market insight from our agents MARKET NEWS
Hip pockets New research by mortgage specialists Henry Dannell shows how London’s property market fared over the last year and – music to the ears of the maths-averse – the figures released are in real pounds and pence. Analysing house prices recorded since January 2021, the firm reveals that, unsurprisingly, the Capital saw a relatively muted year, with London sold prices increasing by just 3.3 per cent. But it’s not all bad news. The higher price of London property compared to the national picture means that in real money terms, the Capital still ranks mid-table, having enjoyed a £16,469 jump. And for some London boroughs, this property price appreciation has been far greater. Nowhere more so than in the uber desirable Kensington & Chelsea, where the average price paid for a property has increased by a staggering £101,171 since this time last year. It’s all about the pockets!

ASK THE AGENT
60 SECONDS
Paul Bennett Behr & Butchoff
How many years have you been in the business? 30.
London’s best bit of greenery? Regent’s Park.
I love to live and work in London because… I have a really great network of friends, family and clients on my doorstep.
Favourite place to grab a coffee? The Coffee Cup in Hampstead.
Where was your first London home? In Belsize Park. What’s your favourite London Street? Regent Street.
Where do you go for head space in the city? The top of Primrose Hill.
Period property or new-build? New-build, but nothing formulaic – it must be unique. Take one person, dead, alive or fictional, out in London – who and where? Felicity Kendal to Claridge’s.
If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… something creative.
Aliens attack – which London landmark/ place would you save? The Royal Albert Hall.
What’s your hidden talent? Spelling!
Creature comfort? My boiling water tap.
“Yes I do, although it makes our job that much harder, because you could end up buying something completely different to what you thought you wanted! Buying a property is a very emotional process, despite it being our biggest financial outlay. If it feels right, then inevitably it will be right, and there’s no need to view dozens of properties just because you feel that you should, especially in a market with a shortage of stock. Whether it’s how it’s decorated, its location, or just its ‘feel’, when you’ve found The One, you just know it.” Nathaniel Wilde, Hamptons

Area In Focus
Ladbroke Grove Resplendent within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Ladbroke Grove represents not just one of London’s most prestigious of areas in which to live but also one of the coolest. It mixes handsome Victorian town houses, Edwardian terraces and garden flats with an eclectic array of colourful boutiques, independent shops, restaurants and bars to form a backdrop that is as interesting as it is cosmopolitan yet with a friendly community vibe. This is a neighbourhood in every sense. The world-famous Portobello Road market is a stand-out feature here and provides a truly unique experience where you will discover fabulous, sought-after vintage and antique items and will be captivated by the bustle of the place. Golborne Road too is an authentic market at the heart of the capital’s largest Portuguese and Moroccan communities. And foodies enjoy everything from fine dining to cheap eats from around the globe at a myriad of restaurants and cafes. Head to Acklam Village Market for a fabulous atmosphere, street food and bars – especially as it’s just been voted London’s favourite music venue too. Schools, both state and private, are exceptional. And commuting is served by two tube lines and the main Westway road. Both the City and the West End are minutes away.
