The definitive guide to London living 60 61
Editor’s letter Liz Skone James What do you think about our stunning makeover? I couldn’t love it any more, and what a fabulous cover to launch the allnew Fabric. Alexandra Roach looks utterly mesmerising, and her interview was pretty captivating, too. We caught up to chat about her new film, A Guide to Second Date Sex: a modern love story, set in London and full of laughs. Out on 14 February, it might just make the perfect Valentine’s date plan. Film not your thing? How about a hitting the designer shops in Mayfair, treating your beau to a relaxing spa treatment, or booking a romantic meal for two? Find the low-down on the Capital’s hottest new restaurants on our food pages, where you’ll also discover a delicious recipe from the brilliant Bryn Williams. There’s little better than a warming bowl of risotto on a cold winter’s evening, so cosy up with your date and enjoy. On which note, we’ve got ideas aplenty for updating your soft furnishings with a snuggly, layered look that’s just right for this time of year. Discover all of this and more in this issue, and do let us know what you think – we’d love your feedback. We’ll be back with more in March…

CULTURE
EXHIBITION
Part Two: Maternality Until 15 February, Richard Saltoun
From writer, art historian and curator Catherine McCormack comes a group exhibition that explores maternal politics and embodiment. Featuring works by, amongst others, Eleanor Antin, Helen Benigson, Judy Chicago, and including Robyn Leroy-Evans’ Because I Love You, 2017 (pictured), the show focuses on themes of reproduction and the materiality of maternal bodies – without holding back on the visuals. An eye-opening, multi-disciplinary exhibition on the beauty and brutality of early motherhood. 41 Dover Street, W1S (020 7637 1225; richardsaltoun.com)

EXHIBITION
Gianfranco Zappettini: The Golden Age 7 February-11 April, Mazzoleni
THEATRE
Blithe Spirit 5 March-11 April, Duke of York’s Theatre
Starring actor, comedian, screenwriter and all-round national treasure, Jennifer Saunders, Noël Coward’s 1941 comedy returns to the West End for a strictly limited
six-week run. Novelist Charles Condomine and his second wife Ruth are haunted at a séance when an eccentric medium inadvertently conjures up the ghost of Charles’s first wife, Elvira. In its first outing at the height of World War II, Blithe Spirit proved a popular distraction. Such light relief will not be lost on today’s audiences. It’s just the tonic, in fact.
This Mayfair exhibition focuses on a completely new series of paintings by the Italian artist. Investigating the symbolic meaning of gold, not just as a precious material but as metaphysical and spiritual perfection, Zappettini, whose studies in Taoism, Zen, and Sufism are intrinsic to his work, proves gold to be so much more than a colour on his palette. 27 Albemarle Street, W1S (020 7495 8805; mazzoleniart.com)

This weekendlong expo will give you the chance to meet with experts offering advice on everything from mortgages to maintenance; house history to energy efficiency. Expect practical demonstrations, panel talks, and invaluable one-to-one chats. Hammersmith Road, W14 (01795 844939; lpoc.co.uk)
THEATRE
Leopoldstadt Until 13 June, Wyndham’s Theatre
OPERA
Carmen
Until 27 February, ENO
In a world premier, Sonia Friedman Productions presents a brand new play by Tom Stoppard. Leopoldstadt is directed by Patrick Marber (who last collaborated with the playwright on Travesties in 2017) and promises to be Stoppard’s most humane and heart-breaking drama to date. Set in Vienna, it is the story of a family who made good – but it was not to last. In the fifty years that follow, they discover what it really means to be Jewish in the first half of the 20th century. A passionate play of love, endurance and loss, and one that’s not to be missed.
Bizet’s Carmen is widely considered one of the greatest operas ever written, and with good reason: it combines passion, high drama, beautiful storytelling and of course, those epochal melodies –Escamillo’s rousing Toreador Song is enough to make even seasoned opera-goers leap from their seats. Calixto Bieito’s 2020 production, sung in English, is set at the tail-end of Franco’s regime in the ’70s and features mezzo Justina Gringytė in the title role with Ashley Riches as Escamillo, while rising stars Sean Panikkar (José) and Nardus Williams (Micaëla) are set to make their ENO debuts.

ccents can be tricky in interviews. So many times I have pored over recordings, playing sections back over and over again, trying to make out names and places. But Alexandra Roach’s soft, south Wales accent is crystal clear and lilting, I could listen to her speak all day. Though she was a veteran of Welsh soap Pobol y Cwm by her early teens, and won the award for Best Juvenile Actor in a Soap at the Children in Entertainment Awards in 2003, the accent almost did for her adult acting career before it had really begun, she tells me. “I was still at RADA at the time,” she recalls, “and I had just signed up with my agent who had sent me on my first audition. I was so nervous and it was in the old BBC building, you know where they filmed Live & Kicking, and I felt like, oh gosh, I have seen this so much on telly; it’s a bit overwhelming. So I was really nervous and I go in and this old guy was the director and he was so well spoken, and he asked me where I was from, and I told him: ‘Wales, Swansea,’ and he just blanked me and turned to the casting director and said, ‘oh no, she’s not right,’” she laughs. “So I said, ‘I’m not going to do it in this voice, I’m going to do it with an English accent,’ and he was like, ‘no, honestly, there’s no point’. He just wouldn’t look at me, he wasn’t listening to me, and I could feel my bottom lip trembling as if I was going
to cry,” she admits. Though it hurt at the time, it was no great loss – indeed a big, careerdefining film role was just around the corner. Fresh out of drama school, Alexandra was offered the part of a young Margaret Thatcher in biopic The Iron Lady, sharing the character with Meryl Streep. “It was an amazing experience. A massive milestone for my career,” she tells me. “I went in most days and just watched Meryl on set, just to see how she worked. It was a great experience as a young actress, to see somebody who was so brilliant and talented, and kind to everyone. And to see how she was leading the film and the crew, and how she was with everybody. It was really inspirational actually, to see that you could be kind and be a leading lady as well; a really important lesson.” The biographical nature of that role was particularly appealing to Alexandra. “I enjoyed the whole process of that, diving into her life, and her biographies and getting underneath her skin,” she tells me. “You know, you don’t have all of that information available to you when you are just inventing a character. I think going forward I would love to get back into that,” she nods. Although, of course, there isn’t always a great deal of choice when it comes to acting. “It’s a tricky one, but you have got, potentially, not a lot of control over what jobs come your way,” she shrugs. And, of course, for those just starting out, there’s not always the
39
luxury of being able to pick and choose between those jobs. “I heard Stephen Graham on Desert Island Discs recently,” Alexandra recalls, “and he said that if you are a painter and decorator, when you first start out, you’re not going to be like, ‘oh, I’m not going to take that house because I don’t like the colour’ – you just have to crack on and paint the house. I think that when I was just out of drama school, it was such a scramble to get any work that when I was actually on set, I felt sort of lucky that I was there. But I am fortunate that the projects that I was offered have stood me in good stead in my career. But the older I am getting, the more experience I have under my belt, I find that I can be more selective with the jobs that I take. I don’t think that I have any regrets with the jobs that I have turned down though – I trust my instincts,” she smiles. Most recently, those instincts have led her to British comedy, A Guide To Second Date Sex, out this month, in which she plays Laura, the lead female role, opposite George MacKay. “It’s a modern love story about two people living in London, that meet on a night out, and then arrange to meet again,” Alexandra explains. “And it’s all about how when you are out, and you meet someone, it is really organic and natural, but then the pressure comes with a second date. So, it’s a funny, awkward take on that.” What appealed to her about the role? “The script is really charming

and funny. There are lots of funny moments in it,” Alexandra explains, adding, “I hadn’t done comedy in a really long time, and I thought it would give me a chance to flex those comedy muscles. And to work with George – I worked with him years and years ago on one of my first films, it was called Private Peaceful, so it was great to work with him again, and because we knew each other, we knew how to make one another laugh. It just seemed really organic.” Comedy is definitely something she would like to do more of this
year. “For me it has always been a passion, and something that I strive to get better at. In my own life, if I’m watching things at home, comedies are my go-to really. I love drama comedies, so anything maybe a bit darker…” she ponders. She has, she tells me, been flexing other creative muscles. “I have been writing for the last year, and I have got a few projects in development with different production companies and different organisations shall we say, but I can’t actually say too much more on that…” she tails off apologetically.
“I can say that I am looking forward to developing my writing more,” she smiles. “I am learning so much about how to develop a TV show. And I have set up a company with my best friend, in Bristol, called Yes Mate Productions. We’re focusing on doing different projects about women. As a young woman, I am always looking to podcasts and novels from women, to make sure that I am on the right track, if that makes sense. I am always looking for inspiration, from older women especially. I’m like,
will it be ok, is this how it’s meant to be – you know, about life. And I think recently I have realised that all of that knowledge that I was seeking from elsewhere, other women, it is in me already. So I am channelling that in my writing, and I am really enjoying that process at the minute,” she reveals, excitedly. After ten years living in north London, Bristol is now home for Alexandra, but she will always hold a special place in her heart for the Capital. “I loved the independence that living in London affords you; the ability to get lost in a city,” she muses. “Of course, when I first moved up that was quite intimidating. I felt really tiny in this massive city of people, but over time I came to really enjoy that feeling. Having a sense of anonymity, and waking up and having such a huge variety of options in terms of choosing what to do with my day. There’s always something to do that falls within your interests. And I miss the sort of buzz of that – but I just wanted to buy a house really, and I had to move out of London for that!” she shrugs with a grin. And, of course, work will always bring her back here… A Guide to Second Date Sex is in cinemas from 14 February

The Spa at The Beaumont While we Londoners are lucky in many ways, I often feel sad that we don’t get to stay in the Capital’s world-class hotels – it’s hard to justify a night in a suite when our own kingsize bed is less than five miles away… But arguably even more invigorating than pocket sprung mattresses and Egyptian cotton sheets are the hotel spas, about which I feel no such guilt. A new favourite has to be the hushed subterranean world at The Beaumont Spa, which announced its partnership with OSKIA last year. A sparkling Deco-fabulous white wonderland of marble and twinkling mosaic tiles, it is a world away from the bustle of Mayfair overhead. Inspired by the Turkish baths at the revered Royal Automobile Club, it is small but perfectly formed, featuring a plunge pool, Hammam table, sauna and steam room, and a secluded relaxation area. The three treatment rooms offer a menu of facial and massage treatments, from which the OSKIA Signature Glow Facial is undoubtedly a highlight. Described as a ‘non-surgical facelift’ it promises to ‘illuminate the skin and leave face, body and mind

feeling rejuvenated and skin brighter, hydrated and toned,’ all achieved through the use of specialised facial and eye contour massage techniques, lymph drainage and acupressure. It is 75 minutes of pure bliss. My therapist begins with a thorough cleansing routine to clear my skin of impurities, followed by a scrub and steam to facilitate the oh-so satisfying, but mildly uncomfortable, extraction process that comes next. Then an AHA mask is applied to shift any remaining dull skin cells. Afterwards, blissful massage, not just on the face – my neck, back and arms are treated to the warming oils, too. I’m so Zen-ed out afterwards that I can’t face returning to reality just yet, so I slope off to the relaxation area in my gloriously over-sized gown. Dressing afterwards in the gleaming changing room, I can’t help admiring my new complexion. Even without make up my skin looks fresh and dewy. The perfect antidote for city skin. LSJ

Dr Daniel Glass at The Dermatology Clinic London While you visit your doctor and dentist regularly, you might not have ever stepped foot inside a dermatologist’s room. Knowing when to see a skin specialist can be difficult because, let’s face it, spots happen, but when out of the blue my usually calm skin became irritated and acne prone, I knew I needed an intervention. Trying to keep things under control was becoming a daily battle and my skin
had become reactive to products I had happily used for years. Frustrated with not being able to manage my unpredictable complexion, I made an appointment to see Harley Streetbased Dr Daniel Glass. Dr Glass has earned an impressive reputation amongst Londoners over the past ten years, thanks to his pragmatic, moderate approach to skincare. From eczema and acne, through to cancer, he can cover all bases – whatever your concern, he really does know everything there is to know about skin. Like most firsts, the first dermatology visit feels like uncharted

territory, involving lots of questions and uncertainty. I’m told it helps to go prepared, so I arrive armed with a photo diary and a list of the products and routines I’ve been using. Professional and reassuring – Dr Glass’ manner is the ideal blend of efficiency, knowledgeability and friendliness, which puts me instantly at ease. We start by running through some quick-fire questions to establish my overall concerns, exploring my medical and family history, lifestyle and health issues past and present. It is all relevant Dr Glass explains, even the issues that you think aren’t directly related to your skin. Next (and the bit I had been dreading the most) I am gently asked to go sans makeup for a closer skin assessment, in order to get a better understanding of what’s really going on. We chat some more afterwards, and armed with all of the pertinent information, Dr Glass makes some skincare recommendations that will work with my skin type, producing a three-month regimen that, with a little bit of routine, persistence and patience, should start seeing some great results. Looking back, my overriding memory of that time is of being really self-conscious. I would wake up in the morning and my first thought would be ‘what is my skin going to be like today?’ I think that anyone who has experienced problem skin will know that feeling so well. That’s where Dr Glass at The Dermatology Clinic really helped – he’s there to find the best solutions for each and every individual and most importantly he’s helped me to take charge and regain skin confidence. Three months on, my skin has never looked better, and I’ve learnt so much along the way. PC Consultations start from £260. 55 Harley Street, W1G (020 3280 2061; thedermatologyclinic.london)
If roses aren’t typically your thing, you might be pleasantly surprised by L’eau À la rose, the new eau de toilette from Maison Francis Kurkdjian Paris, which is both fruity and floral, and utterly contemporary. The master perfumer has chosen two roses as his inspiration. Damascena rose oil from Bulgaria offers a blossoming top note; slightly spicy and with fruity hints of pear and lychee. Meanwhile, the base note of Centifolia rose absolute from Grasse gives a generous rosy floral, slightly honeyed note. Like the caress of rose petals gathered at daybreak, L’eau À la rose unfolds on the skin with a delicate floral freshness that will last long into the day. Say it with roses this Valentine’s Day. £150, available from Selfridges (franciskurkdjian.com)

INGREDIENTS 1 litre mushroom stock or chicken stock, or a mixture of both | 50g butter | 2 tbsp olive oil | 2 shallots, peeled and finely chopped | 200g risotto rice | 100ml white wine salt and pepper | 100g wild mushrooms, trimmed, washed, dried and quartered | 50g Parmesan, finely grated, plus extra for serving | 1–2 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley

METHOD Pour the stock into a saucepan and bring to the boil over a medium heat. Keep on a low heat within easy reach until needed. Now melt the butter with tablespoon of the olive oil in a heavy-based saucepan. Add the chopped shallots and cook for 2–3 minutes, or until soft. Add the rice, stir well to coat it with the butter and shallot mixture, then cook for another minute. Pour in the white wine, stirring continuously until all the liquid has been absorbed. Add a ladleful of the simmering stock to the rice, stirring all the time, and cook until the stock has been absorbed before adding another ladleful. Repeat until the rice is tender but retains a little bite – this should take about 20 minutes. When the risotto is ready, season with salt and pepper. Then remove from the heat, put on a lid, set aside and keep warm. Heat a heavy-based frying pan and, once it is hot, add the remaining olive oil. Add the mushrooms and cook for 2 minutes, or until just soft. Spoon the mushrooms onto kitchen paper to absorb any excess oil. Stir the Parmesan and parsley into the risotto. Add the mushrooms, stirring them in gently. If the risotto feels a little firm, stir through some stock before serving. Serve with freshly grated Parmesan on top.

Head chef, Charlie’s When I was a child, I wanted to be… a policeman. I was too short and academically challenged… but I found cookery, so all is well. The first thing I cooked was… a beef wellington, out of a book called Great British Dishes, which I still have. The dish was pretty successful, but I recall the cost of the ingredients making me more nervous than the cookery. My kitchen heroes are… at this stage, my brigade, for sure. But as a young cook, I looked up to chefs such as Marco Pierre White, Nico Ladenis and Pierre Koffmann. And the Roux family are a huge inspiration. My last meal on earth would be… lunch and long! I hope. But most likely by the sea, with the many marvellous ingredients it offers, accompanied by close friends and family. Sea urchins, oysters, langoustines and crab before I drift off into the night… My favourite London restaurant is… Trinity. But failing that I probably dine most at Chez Bruce. Or Noble Rot, for its incredible wine list. My ultimate London day would consist of… an early run along the Thames, a visit to the Tate Modern, lunch at The River Café, a stroll around Hyde Park, pre theatre drinks at The Donovan Bar followed by a show with my wife, then dinner at The Wolseley and overnight in a suite back at Brown’s – that would do nicely. Michelin-starred chef Adam launched Charlie’s, the new restaurant at Brown’s Hotel late last year. Albemarle Street, W1S (020 7518 4004; roccofortehotels.com)

HOT TABLE
Gaucho Charlotte Street It’s been just over a year since, motivated by environmental concerns, my meat-loving other half announced he didn’t want us to eat beef at home. Overnight, we went from eating steak three or four times a month, to eating it as a treat once in a blue moon (and then only when we could be sure of the provenance). We have no doubts on that front when it comes to the new Gaucho. The Argentinian steak chain is now in its 25th year and under new leadership. With that comes a bold new socially responsible future vision. One that is articulated in the radically renovated Charlotte Street restaurant, which reopened late last year. Gone is the cowhide which typified the original site, in its place, richly textured accents of ochre, deep blue and grey that bring to mind the wild Argentine landscapes. Buenos Aires is a city rich in Art Deco influences, and that is reflected in the dramatic mirrored bar that takes centre stage, while intimate leather seating booths evoke Argentine’s gaucho-country. Everything exudes glamour. As we sip pre dinner cocktails, the bartender explains the new concept to us; prestige Argentinian wines are available on tap, transported in kegs – significantly reducing the CO2 emissions associated with transporting bottles. In fact, the whole set up here will be carbon neutral by the end of this year, thanks to work carried out with the University of Cambridge and the University of Buenos Aires. Collaboratively they have studied the methane output of Gaucho’s cattle, in order to design a

new style of feed which will reduce it. And they are offsetting the carbon they are producing by planting trees in Argentina. Socially responsible too, they’ve worked with five key partnerships, including Clink and Only a Pavement Away to deliver a more inclusive workforce, and ten per cent of the team here have been recruited through these partnerships. We’re seriously impressed, all the more so by the food. Reinvigorated menus have been overseen by new

Good news for fans of Italian fare, one of the world’s finest Italian restaurants is opening in Mayfair this month. Say ciao to Giannino Dal 1899, which first opened its doors in Milan 120 years ago and has gone on to garner global renown for its classic menu inspired by traditional Italian home-cooking. The opening of the Mayfair restaurant signifies the brand’s first steps outside Italy: enjoying a prime spot on Blenheim Street, it has been designed by Italian architectural studio Spagnulo & Partners with an elegant aesthetic that perfectly embodies the welcoming atmosphere it has become known for in Milan. The à la carte menu will feature traditional dishes with a modern twist, think

much loved favourites such as babà di lasagne al ragù Napoletano, a perfect fusion between the culture of Southern and Northern Italy, or the revisited classic spaghetti aglio with olio e pepperoncino and Mazara del Vallo red prawns crudo, all carefully crafted by executive chef Salvatore Suzzi. But it’s the desserts we’re most excited about – if anything will break that new year diet it has to be orange cannoncini with Namelaka cream and raspberry sauce, a reinterpretation of the traditional Sicilian dessert. With a reputation that precedes it, this looks set to be one of the openings of 2020. 10 Blenheim Street, W1S (gianninoristorante.co.uk)

THE ULTIMA-TE ALPINE EXPERIENCE
Discover a new breed of Alpine chalet that intertwines traditional character with extraordinary levels of refinement, relaxation and style WORDS by PENNY CLEMENTS
Photography by Igor Laski
Megève On a clear morning, Mont Blanc looms large from the balcony of the hotel chalet. Enviably situated in the French Alps, the small town of Megève has a population of just 3,000: a little over an hour south of Geneva and mere moments from the slopes, it feels splendidly isolated and it is hard to believe that this is one of Europe’s most popular ski destinations. The beautiful boutique chalet where we are staying is Ultima Megève, the brainchild of entrepreneurs Byron Baciocchi and MaxHervé George, two young hoteliers and art pundits who have made a name for themselves attracting a particularly savvy set of travellers. From the moment we arrive, the location sets the tone. The characterful chalet building has been

carefully designed and renovated. Sprawling across 1,500sq m it is arranged on a plateau high up in the French Alps, surrounded by nature – picturesque forests, crystal clear waters and fresh air. With its wooden walls and cosy furnishings, the design is reminiscent of a traditional chalet lodge. This unique venue can host up to 18 guests, with each of the bedroom suites offering generous accommodation boasting high ceilings and vast windows allowing for breathtaking views. Impossibly comfortable beds, thoughtfully kitted out dressing rooms, luxurious bathrooms and a private terrace-balcony make up the suite offering. The interiors palette utilises a mix of gentle whites and soft textures, finished off with mirrored surfaces to perfectly bounce light around the room. But perhaps my favourite touch is that, at the press of a button at night, you can power down everything and enjoy a healthy sleep in pure darkness and

silence. All this is offset by the chalet’s comprehensive facilities and state of the art approach to relaxation, which never compromises on luxury. From the in-residence private chef, dedicated drivers and staff, the signature spa and gym, arcade games room and nightclub, to the comfy rooms and quiet corners to hide and snuggle away in, it offers the ultimate secluded spot to escape from reality, and I never want to leave. Thankfully, we don’t have to go home just yet…
Crans-Montana Our next stop is in the Valais region of Switzerland, arriving towards the end of the day we’re treated to the most spectacular views as the backdrop to the mountains turns from blue to orange. Our new home from home offers an unsurpassed mountain vista and is perfectly located for the slopes. There is something magical about Ultima Crans-Montana’s setting and we soon discover that the hotel itself is equally as special. Taking the boutique hotel concept one step further, Ultima CransMontana is based on tailor-made programmes, with dedicated concierge teams, butlers, chefs and spa therapists, as well as private helicopter and car transfers included as standard. On arrival we are wowed by one of the biggest crystal chandeliers we have ever seen (15m to be exact) – there is no doubt that Ultima Crans-Montana is an aesthete’s heaven. With no shortage of the unique, it is at once beautiful,
stylish, super luxurious and homely. The Ultima signature brand is instantly recognisable; intertwining traditional Swiss character and opulent modern touches, hoteliers Byron and Max-Hervé have worked with the best designers and artists to create a space that is totally exclusive. As the orange sky is gobbled up into darkness, I sit on a plush velvet sofa in the cosy double living room, complete with obligatory crackling open fire, beautiful designer artwork and coffee table books, and I very quickly feel at home. Completely comfortable, it is the perfect place to socialise, unwind and enjoy the atmosphere after a long day on the slopes. Spanning an incredible 4,500sq m, Ultima Crans-Montana is composed of two independent chalets accommodating up to 38 guests in total privacy. The first and larger of the two consists of eight master suites and two snug children’s dormitories, sleeping up to 26 guests. Fully blending in with the environment, no two suites here are the same – all have been designed based on the original layout of the chalet. Each screams luxury, from the most spectacular views stretching from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc, to the marble-clad bathrooms, BVLGARI amenities, sleek dressing rooms, Baobab

fragrances and large open terrace balconies. The more intimate second chalet is just as comfortable, offering six bedrooms as well as a spacious open plan kitchen perfect for hosting. The two chalets have been designed for complete intimacy and privacy, but both are directly integrated and benefit from superior five-star facilities such as direct access to the slopes, a 1,000sq m spa, clinic and outdoor pool heated to 30 degrees, a private chef, private cinema room and a dedicated concierge team on hand to cater to every whim. The Ultima collection offers a life of privilege, certainly, but also one of beauty, simplicity and sharing. After a few days spent experiencing the offering, we can see it is a vision that makes complete sense.
Rates at Ultima Megève start from €60,000 for a week in summer. Rates at Ultima CransMontana start from 35,000 CHF for a week in Chalet 2 in summer, and 75,000 CHF for Chalet 1 (41 22 779 33 33; ultimacollection.com)

Add warmth with soft furnishings: cuddle up with natural materials in the bedroom and layer your living space for an inviting look that’ll see you through to spring WORDS by ALI HOWARD
Rattan doesn’t usually conjure images of winter warmth, but when paired with natural materials in a range of neutral tones and appealing textures, it becomes an obvious choice. “In 2020, we will see a modern take on bohemian decor that’s all about creating a soothing atmosphere with soft, neutral fabrics and rattan,” says Rebecca Snowden, interior style advisor at Furniture Choice. Here, a neutral palette in the bedroom is layered up with natural sheepskins, jute rugs and seagrass storage baskets for the ultimate in cosy bohemia. Invest in rugs, throws, and an abundance of scatter cushions for depth to dive into.
Pantone’s colour of the year for 2020 is Classic Blue, a bold shade that recalls the sky at dusk. While that doesn’t immediately scream snuggly winter homewares, it does offer a sense of serenity that perfectly complements our natural look. For the design team at Sofas & Stuff, a colour pop of blue brings a calming ambience to winter interiors. Whether finished in sumptuous velvets and cotton, wool mixes or hand-woven linens, their handcrafted beds, sofas and statement armchairs are the height of cosy at any time of the year. Team the Tintinhull snuggler in blue ticking stripe with a natural jute rug for the full effect.

While soft furnishings such as cushions, blankets and throws can add layers of seasonal warmth and texture, you can really up your home comforts game with a furniture piece that is, in itself, crafted from the cosiest materials. Perch Upholstery’s Hermia footstool is topped with a knotted merino wool cushion that’s nigh on impossible not to squeeze at any given opportunity. The wool has been hand-felted for both texture and durability, and with hand-turned pale oak legs, the versatile stool offers a slice of Scandinavian cool alongside its obvious cosy appeal. Go bold and bright or stick to calming ivory to suit your neutral scheme. £300 (perchupholstery.com)

Get creative with rugs for added warmth by layering up carpets asymmetrically and in complementary shades and patterns, or even as wall-hung artworks that’ll award your living space instant glamour – as well as added insulation on the coldest winter nights. According to luxury rugmakers Woven, texture is a big story for 2020, with the use of varying fibres, different weaving techniques and innovative surface finishes throughout their latest collections. For that lived in and loved aesthetic, Louis De Poortere’s Antique Hadschlu rugs hit all the right notes. Pictured is a re-edited distressed flatweave version of the classic 782 Hadschlu design. Originally built for railway workers, Fiona’s lateVictorian red-brick property has seen some major changes over the years. The director of the award-winning beauty brand shows us around her north London home
WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by JAMES CHAMPION
A
year’s worth of renovation has seen Fiona’s house, which she shares with her husband and three boys, transform into a spacious, light-loving, and elegant property that functions as both a family home and fully operational workspace. “When we bought the house there were six bedrooms,” she explains. “But we converted one into a large family style bathroom. We added an extension to the back of the house, which serves as a gym and office. Running my business from home, and with three kids, we needed extra space for family and my work to co-exist.” Like any well-run family home, the kitchen is the heart of the property, and Fiona’s is a stylish affair, contemporary yet timeless in its thoughtful design. Sleek cabinetry in midnight blue is offset with snowy white worktops, while pops of shiny brass in the door furniture, lighting and bar stools offer understated glamour. It’s clear that in this room, which merges into an open-plan dining area, entertaining is up there with the practicalities of feeding a family of five. “The kitchen space is a non-negotiable for me when buying a house,” Fiona says. “It’s where we spend most of our time as a family, so it has to be functional as well as

comfortable.” And for this businesswoman, to achieve the optimum in flow and functionality, it’s all about the floorplan. “I’ve never liked kitchens in basements,” she says, “which we found difficult when looking for a house in London – it can be hard to find your living spaces all on one floor in the Capital! The fact that we have our living rooms, kitchen and playroom all on the ground floor sold the house for me.” While the property has seen a comprehensive refurbishment, both structurally and cosmetically, Fiona was keen to keep it a sympathetic one. Original fixtures have been respectfully restored to their former glory, as in the elegant drawing room with its polished wood floor, period fireplace and ornate cornicing (now even more of a feature in brilliant white against the chic grey walls). “Living in London for ten years, character has become something I can’t live without,” Fiona enthuses, “so we did everything we could to preserve the period features of the house. I love imagining all the families and people who have lived inside these walls. Living in such a busy modern city, it’s so nice to come home and feel a sense of history, and calm, which is what this house does for me.” Through considered use of colour – namely dark greys and blues, soft pinks and yellows – there’s a pleasing continuity between the property’s elements of old and new. And that seemingly effortless mix of styles continues in Fiona’s choice of furnishings and accessories. For every cleanlined and contemporary furniture piece, there’s a vintage find that pays homage to the house’s rich heritage. “I bought an antique chest of drawers from Portobello Market about ten years ago,” she says, “it’s so old I can’t open two of the drawers. But it’s been a staple in my house everywhere we move. It works in every room I put it in. And I have an old phone, which was my great grandfather’s, which sits in our drawing room. It adds a bit of history, and everyone asks about the phone when they see it.” nessaorganics.com

Sarah Ho Jeweller
I’ve just opened my first showroom in Mayfair and I’m still exploring everything the area has to offer. As a treat, I’ll start my morning with a chai latte from Feya, on James Street, on my way to the showroom. I spend the day designing and meeting my clients; it is an appointment-only showroom, which makes it easy to plan my day. I tend to design at home, in my studio on the top floor – a quiet and calm space where I can gather my thoughts and focus.
I normally have lunch with my husband: one of my favourite spots is Deliciously Ella, which is just around the corner from the showroom. The day can get very busy, so from time to time I like to take ten minutes out to meditate – walking around Mount Street Gardens when the weather is good is the perfect way to find a bit of headspace. When it comes to dinner, I’m so excited that IT has opened in London, I went to their opening night and it was fabulous – I’ve frequented the
Ibiza location many times over the years and love it. I am discovering more things about my new area every day and look forward to finding more hidden gems this year! 21 Woodstock Street, W1C (shojewellery.com)

Known for its traditional bespoke tailoring, it is no surprise that Savile Row exhibits an undeniable sense of class and sophistication.

The Egyptian effigy of the lion-goddess Sekhmet displayed over Sotheby’s door dates to around 1320 BC, making it the oldest private sculpture on display outdoors in London. It was part of a collection of artefacts auctioned in the late 1800s. The lot was sold for £40, but the buyer never collected the statue, and it has since remained in the care of the auction house. 69

Schools WORDS by CLAIRE ATHERTON THE HEAD show that peer mentoring can also promote self-confidence and self-esteem. It’s a picture Lindsey recognises. “Our mentees build confidence, resilience and skills in everything from revision to empathy,” she says. “They also develop friendships with older girls who’ve been where they are.” The mentors themselves get the satisfaction of helping others, while broadening their friendship groups. They also have the experience of attending an interview to prove they have a passion for the task. So is it possible to quantify the impact of peer mentoring – for example, on wellbeing or bullying? “Our girls complete a wellbeing assessment twice a year, which shows the overall effect of our interventions. But it can be difficult to pinpoint which one made the difference,” says Lindsey. “Last year, we launched the QA Spirit, which involves setting targets for developing emotional intelligence. We should be able to measure the impact of that later this year – and mentoring will definitely have played a big part.”
LET’S TALK
Passion for peers
According to the Mentoring and Befriending Foundation (MBF), peer mentoring in schools has grown significantly over the past decade. Now, it’s likely that more than a third of all UK schools have some form of provision. Why the increase? “Peer mentoring matters today more than ever,” says Lindsey Bryant, deputy head (pastoral) at Queen Anne’s, an independent boarding and day school for girls in Reading. “Children’s mental health and wellbeing are constantly in the news. By having peer mentors as role models, schools can catch mental health issues before they emerge.” So far, these programmes have mainly focused on reducing bullying. But the MBF’s recent pilot studies
4 questions parents can ask schools about peer mentoring Do you have a peer mentoring programme? If so, is it formal or informal? (According to the MBF, formalised programmes that train, support and manage the mentors have a bigger impact). If not, could my child help set one up? Do you have a dedicated coordinator I can speak to about how it all works? For example, how can my child access the support or become a mentor? How does the programme support your anti-bullying policy and how do you measure the impact it’s had? mandbf.org.uk; qas.org.uk

Caroline Townshend Eaton Square Mayfair What attracted you to the school? I had experience of setting up and opening a section of another school, which I’d thoroughly enjoyed. Eaton Square’s strong focus on pastoral care and personal development resonated with my own values. And after working in Surrey, I wanted my next school to be in central London. I love the buzz and the diversity of our school community. What makes it different? With so much that’s unknown about future jobs, it’s essential that our pupils have strong values and a strong sense of self. It’s how they’ll make choices that equip them to lead happy, meaningful lives. That’s why we’ve incorporated leadership and character education into our core curriculum for all year groups. We feel this is how we can truly prepare pupils for the world in which they will live. What extra-curricular activities do you offer? Every pupil takes part in an activities slot after lunch, where they can choose from nearly 40 different clubs and activities. Pupils have two afternoons of games and a timetabled PE lesson each week. There are also before and after-school clubs. How do you look after the wellbeing of your pupils? The role of the tutor is central in our school. Each tutor is responsible for supporting and mentoring a small number of pupils on a daily basis. Alongside this, we have timetabled PSHE lessons for all year groups, yoga and mindfulness clubs, parent talks and training. Place2Be, our in-house counselling service, also supports pupils through the challenges adolescence can present.
