FROM THE EDITOR
R E D L E T T E R D AY S … To mark this month of special dates (Valentine’s Day, Shrove Tuesday, Chinese New Year, London Fashion Week, half term…) we’ve dressed the issue up in red, and we think it’s rather fetching. I’m sure you’ll agree that cover star Pearl Mackie looks particularly striking in the gorgeous selection of scarlet numbers we took along to our shoot. We had such a lovely morning getting to know Doctor Who’s ex companion; her interview makes really interesting reading. And there’s plenty more to be read, aside from all that red. I’m feeling inspired by our feature on converting attic space – who knew there were so many options? Before starting any home improvement works though, the slopes are calling. There’s still time to squeeze in one last ski jaunt before the season ends, and we’ve found the perfect spot to stay. Don’t tell everyone…

few days ago, Pearl Mackie tells me, while she was out in Brixton, a young fan chased her down the road. Even though her stint as Doctor Who’s companion Bill is now over, being recognised is inevitable. You don’t get to appear on “one of the biggest shows in the country, potentially in the world,” she explains, without becoming something of a household name. But it’s something the actress is still getting used to. “It is sometimes glorious, and sometimes, when I don’t have enough make-up on, it is a bit disconcerting,” she confirms. “This girl was so breathless. She didn’t have her phone or a piece of paper, and I didn’t have anything either, so we went into a shoe shop and they gave her a bit of paper and I signed it for her. It was so nice to be able to do that.” They got chatting about what Pearl was doing there, and she explained, to the teenager’s delight, that she had grown up locally. “Hopefully she went away from that thinking that she could do what I did too. And that’s a nice thing to be able to pass on to her, as a young black teenager, to know that I was just like her,” she grins. Pearl can’t be too judgmental about being looked at on the street because she admits to being something of a people watcher herself. “I have always been fascinated by other people. I’ll walk down the road and look at people, and think: I wonder what it’s like to be them. We are all given a very different set of opportunities and circumstances, and within those constraints we are trying to carve out our lives in the best way we can.” It is this fascination with the lives of others that led her to acting: “It’s fantastic. You get to pretend to be somebody else! And as I’ve got older, I’ve realised that it can also be an incredible way to bring light to issues, and stories, that aren’t
necessarily told that much. It allows people to understand things on a more personal level,” she explains. Pearl’s story of the moment is Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party. Ian Rickson’s production at The Harold Pinter Theatre opened on the 9 January, on the 60th anniversary of the play’s first performance, with a cast including Toby Jones, Stephen Mangan and Zoë Wanamaker. Speaking of meeting her colleagues for the first time, Pearl says: “It is quite an all-star cast, so I was very nervous to meet these really well respected, and loved and talented actors. But everyone was so lovely, such a dream.” For an actor, that feeling of apprehension around starting a new job never really goes away, Pearl tells me. “It’s like the first day of school all over again,” she explains. “You’re like, oh God, I don’t know anyone, and am I actually good at my job? And apparently that never goes away, no matter how experienced you are.” Of course, early reviews indicate that Pearl has nothing to worry about. She plays the part of Lulu, a friend of the couple who own the B&B where the action is set. It was, she says, an irresistible part. “It’s a wonderful piece of theatre; Pinter was a genius. And the director, Ian Rickson, is fantastic. I’ve been a fan of his for years. And he is such a lovely man, very engaging and passionate. He commands attention, but in a way that you want to give it to him.” Add to that the fact that the play is being staged in the West End, and Pearl is pretty made up about the job. “It is really amazing to be playing a part like that in my hometown!” she tells me. “I had always wanted to do a play in the West End. And there is something quite romantic about doing a play in the winter, shivering at the stage door in the dark…”

“It’s a wonderful piece of theatre; Pinter was a genius. And the director, Ian Rickson, is fantastic… It is really amazing to be playing a part like that in my hometown!”
A graduate of Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Pearl had worked largely in theatre (with credits including The Crucible; The Comedy of Errors; and a long stint in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) when she landed the part of Bill in Doctor Who. Does she prefer stage or screen? Neither, she is quick to assure me, going on to explain that: “Part of the joy of being an actor is that you get to experience these different mediums, and tell different stories in different ways. I would hate to limit myself to just one of those ways. If I am lucky enough to have a career that sees me working across all of them then that would be amazing.” And in terms of those opportunities, it is clear that her stint on what is arguably the world’s most popular sci-fi show will open doors that might otherwise have remained shut to Pearl. “That’s inevitable,” she tells me. “People don’t necessarily want to take chances on somebody who is unknown. Everybody knows Doctor Who – it’s a great way of saying, ‘hey, this is what I can do’. My work on the show is a visual record in a massive arena that will last forever. No matter how ambitious you are, when you graduate from drama school you don’t think that you are going to go on to be the companion on Doctor Who. I mean, I didn’t, anyway!” Things are certainly working out very nicely for Pearl, but I wonder what she might have done if the acting jobs hadn’t been forthcoming? “Ha, what a thought. I don’t know,” she ponders, giving the question some consideration. “I am quite visual; I get quite excited by houses and furniture and things like that… some kind of interior design would’ve been right up my street,” she concludes. “It’s similar to acting I suppose, in that the way that you present things can help to create an atmosphere. You can make people feel certain things by putting things together in a specific way.” It’s an answer that has quite possibly been inspired by a very imminent house move. “I’m nearly about to exchange on my own London home, so fingers crossed that all goes through,” she reveals, excitedly. “If it does, I have got quite a bit of decorating to do. That will be exciting. I’m not sure how easy it will be to do while I am appearing in the play, but I’m not complaining. Things could be a lot more difficult than dealing with those two things,” she laughs. Decorating and birthday parties aside, I wonder what’s next for Pearl? “I’m just focusing on the play for now, and we’ll see what happens afterwards,” she explains. “Lulu is 48 |

very different to Bill. I like doing different stuff and telling different people’s stories, so hopefully whatever comes up next will be very different again.” After a long run of rehearsals and performances, some downtime would probably be most welcome, and Pearl never says no to time off in her hometown. “I love all the backstreets of Soho. Looking at the old buildings and popping into shops and getting a cup of coffee and just meandering around really. Finding new little places – I always enjoy that,” she tells me. “And walking across Waterloo Bridge – it is one of my favourite bridges and it just makes me feel really happy. I don’t know why, probably because the view of London from there is just the best. And I like going to the lidos, and sitting in parks. I mean you can’t do that now, it’s just really cold and unpleasant, and you’ve got the wet hair… Just yuck.” With over two months left of The Birthday Party’s run, the chances are the weather will be perking up nicely, ready for a dip when Pearl finishes. That’s if she gets a chance before moving on to the next big role. What, or who, that might be remains to be seen, but it’s guaranteed to be exciting. The Birthday Party runs at the Harold Pinter Theatre until 14 April (thebirthdayparty.london)

Somadome I’m ever so mindful about that resolution to be more mindful, oh yes, I’m forever beating myself up about not managing to meditate. It’s just so hard to find the space and time to switch off and focus. The Somadome, an oh-so clever pod designed to encourage deep levels of meditation, sounds like the answer to all of my prayers. According to its creators, it combines ancient healing practices with modern technology to promote stress relief, vitality, and mind and body alignment. LED colour therapy is employed to regulate and control production of melatonin and cortisol, microcrystalline tiles lining the pod block harmful electromagnetic frequencies and a soundtrack incorporating binaural beats (inaudible frequencies) are used to help guide your mind into the meditative state. I’m game to give it a go and settle into the cosy cushioned pod. Pulling down the lid, I choose a guided track which claims that it will help me to examine my heart’s deepest desires and imagine them being fulfilled. Then I close my eyes, focus on my breathing and let the words and sounds wash over me. The next thing I know, the track is finishing and it’s time to re-emerge into the real world. I feel gloriously relaxed and ready to face the day. As to those heart’s desires, only time will tell, I guess. One thing is for sure; for once I have managed to meditate. And I’m looking forward to my next session. If you fancy trying it for yourself, there’s just one Somadome in the UK, at the magnificent new 3 St. James’s Square health club; just another of the multitude of reasons why you really must join. Hair and Bone Things don’t get off to a good start: I arrive for my colour appointment to find a sign on the door informing me that the salon will open later today due to a staff meeting. I have written down the wrong time in my diary and I am a whole hour early. One of the team spots me outside looking flustered and embarrassed (I don’t make mistakes, I’ve no idea how this happened), and takes pity on me, letting me in to sit in the warm until they are finished. She even offers to make me a coffee. I could cry. Things get better still when my stylist, the wonderful Jade, comes upstairs and tells me she’ll skip the meeting (whispering, “any excuse,” and winking). I have my own private salon and feel utterly spoilt. We’ve already discussed colour and style when I popped in for a consultation and colour test a few days earlier, so she gets to work immediately mixing and prepping. The salon works with Goldwell hair colours, known for creating beautifully multidimensional tones, but more importantly, for providing good grey coverage while being kind to hair (something that is particularly important for me). Much as I love a pampering session, I’m not great at sticking to regular salon appointments, so we’ve decided on low maintenance balayage to create flashes of lighter colour through the ends, but in the main the look is darker than my current style, with more reddish tones. Perfect for this time of year. Colour finished, I settle into the divine massage chair for a conditioning treatment, before Jade gets to work on the cut. Nothing dramatic required, just some natural-looking layering around the face to give shape and movement. One swishy blowdry later and I’m thrilled. Creative colouring, cool cuts and the most attentive customer service: I’ll definitely be keeping these guys on speed dial. Ikoyi founders Jeremy Chan and Iré Hassan-Odukale are childhood friends with a passion for unusual flavours
Food&Drink
Hot table...
IKOYI After a dry, and let’s face it, rather desolate start to January (on the food and drink front, at least), the prospect of a forthcoming dinner date is exciting. Since Ikoyi opened last summer, Jeremy Chan and Iré Hassan-Odukale’s menu of modern west African-inspired fusion dishes has received glowing reviews from the critics, and won them a Best Newcomer award at the London Restaurant Festival. It is fine dining, but a quick look at the menu reveals that it is certainly not as we know it. While the location might not be the most inspiring (it is set within the St. James’s Market development, which, to me, regardless of the day or time, always feels like being in Canary Wharf on a Saturday), the space feels cosy and intimate, and the welcome is genuine. Studio Ashby, who were commissioned to design the space, chose an earthy palette: amber velvet banquettes, elm wood surfaces and ceramic textures, with bespoke, low-hung earthenware pendants creating a natural warmness. Chef Jeremy has worked in the kitchens of Dinner and Noma, but his offering here is altogether different. So different that we don’t feel confident negotiating the menu without a little guidance: Jeremy himself comes out from the kitchen to talk us through the options. We start with a selection of snacks: dambu nama (a type of Nigerian dried beef) and whipped bone marrow tarts, designed to be eaten in one delicious mouthful, and buttermilk plantain and smoked Scotch bonnet. We fall for the bold, sweet yet spicy flavour and contrasting textures of the latter, which come accompanied by a creamy, spiced mayo for dipping. I’m disappointed that the scallop starter is not available, but the Mangalitsa (a breed of Hungarian pig) more than makes up for that – it is spicy pork mince served with razor clams and crispy shredded lettuce. For mains, the Ibérico suya is perfectly cooked and presented like a work of art. We eat it with the Jollof rice, a house special, which is topped with crab meat and is gorgeously smoky and full of flavour. It is a deeply satisfying meal: thought provoking, imaginative and colourful. The perfect sunshiny antidote to a dreary winter evening. From top left: interiors have been designed by Studio Ashby; the smoked Jollof rice is a house speciality; dishes are exquisitely presented
Hands up who wasn’t affected by David Attenborough’s distressing images of plastic polluting our seas. We can’t get them out of our heads, and have been making a concerted effort to change our own habits – making packed lunches, asking for our lattes in reusable cups and buying loose veggies rather than pre-packaged ones. But this month, we’ll be taking things a step further and doing our grocery shop at Bulk Market, London’s first zero waste supermarket. Having launched last summer in a pop-up location, the store was so successful that it will open at a new permanent site in Hackney this month, with an innovative design that uses harvested waste materials found in unusual locations – including the Royal Opera House – to furnish the space. While the store
might not be on the doorstep, stocking everything from dry goods to homemade pasta and DIY natural ingredients for beauty products, we think the effort of getting there will be more than rewarded. Address details were not available at time of going to press. For more details, see bulkmarket.uk

DELIVERING EXCELLENCE If you can think of nothing worse than eating out this Valentine’s Day, but don’t fancy doing the cooking yourself, let Motu Indian Kitchen take care of the catering. Coming from the Sethi family, who brought us Michelin-starred Gymkhana and Trishna, and the award-winning Hoppers, you can rest assured that this is no run of the mill Indian takeaway. Having launched in Battersea at the end of 2016, the team quickly developed a reputation for their delicious feast boxes, inspired by traditional tiffin tins. GQ magazine even labelled the brand one of the “100 best things in the world right now”. And since the opening of new branches in Islington and Swiss Cottage late last year, north Londoners can get in on the act too. Hurrah. Exclusive to the newest Motu in Swiss Cottage are a series of Indo-Chinese specials, which introduce Chinese seasonings and cooking techniques to classic Indian dishes (think chilli chicken, keema masala egg fried rice and chilli paneer). While our memories of singing Auld Lang Syne are getting fuzzy, and most of us have already fallen off the resolutions wagon, Chinese New Year is still to come. The Year of the Dog begins on 16 February, and to mark the celebrations, London’s loftiest Chinese restaurant have 10 days of celebrations planned in the run up. Between the 5 and the 25 a special menu has been created by head chef Fei Wang. The dishes – inspired by Chinese tradition but given a 21st century twist – include handmade king prawn dumpling with hot and sour soup and steamed whole sea bass with spicy garlic sauce. The special menu will also be served on the evening of the 16, when all of the restaurant’s red lanterns will
be re-hung in a special ‘cleaning’ ceremony designed to bring good luck for the year ahead. During the celebratory dinner, guests will be entertained by a traditional lion dance, helping to ward off ‘Nian’ or evil spirits, and traditional red envelopes containing gifts and treats will be distributed. Nine course set menu priced at £88 per person. Level 33 The Shard, 31 St. Thomas Street, SE1 (020 3011 1257; hutong.co.uk)
3 BEST NEW OPENINGS: The Capital’s foodie scene is ever-changing (lucky us). Here’s the low down on our favourite new openings…
1. The Coral Room Recently opened as part of the multimillionpound transformation of The Bloomsbury hotel. With Martin Brudnizki at the helm, the space has been sensitively reimagined with the original wood panelled walls being treated to a high-gloss lacquer finish in vivid coral – perfect for
brightening up dark winter days. The bar offers London’s largest English sparkling wine selection, while the all-day food menu focuses on small plates designed for sharing. 16-22 Great Russell Street, WC1B (020 7347 1221; thecoralroom.co.uk)
2. Greyhound Café Since it launched in Bangkok in the late nineties, Greyhound Café’s fusion of Thai tradition with tongue-in-cheek global influences has seen it become something of a phenomenon. There are now 17 cafés across Asia, and last month marked the opening of the first in
Europe, Greyhound Café London. Founder Bhanu Inkawat says: “Our inspirations come from far and wide. Just like in Bangkok, we mix traditional and international, street and couture, all fused together in a beautiful, chaotic way.” 37 Berners Street, W1T (020 3026 3798; greyhoundcafe.uk)
3. Mee Market New to the Soho scene, from Linda Lee, founder of acclaimed fine dining Korean restaurant, Koba and popular street food joint, On The Bab, is this new Korean deli. A menu of Korean and Asian-inspired hot and cold foods is available to eat-in, including favourites from both
restaurants, while the deli stocks dried foods, fresh Asian vegetables and a variety of frozen meals to eat at home. A range of branded homeware, accessories and stationery is also available. We love it. 9a Archer Street, W1D (meemarket.co.uk)

London Foodie
GREGORY MARCHAND
Chef-owner of Frenchie When I was a child I wanted to be… a vet, like many other kids I suppose. I spent a lot of my childhood in the French countryside, surrounded by farms and animals. The first thing I cooked was… French toast. I made it with leftover baguette, as my grandmother did. My kitchen heroes are… Thomas Keller for The French Laundry, Marco Pierre White in his younger years for the rock and roll attitude and Alain Passard for the beauty of vegetables. My fail safe dinner party menu is… pork cooked in milk with sage, lemon and anchovy.
Looking to spoil your love on 14 February? You can count on Bea Voe, managing director of the Feed your Soul group, to know exactly how. Her latest opening, the Butterscotch Tea Room, debuts in Marylebone this month, with a soft opening from 10 February. Specialising in alluring goodies that will leave your sweet tooth yearning for more, the space is split into a relaxed café area downstairs, serving Bea’s signature cakes and bakes, with a more formal afternoon tea room upstairs. If you can’t wait to taste what’s on offer, Bea has shared one of her delicious recipes here. Enjoy. 56 James Street, W1U (020 7253 0915; butterscotchtearoom.co.uk)

Preheat oven to 165°C. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, sodium bicarbonate, baking powder and salt together, twice. In a separate bowl, whisk together the rest of the ingredients. Pour over the dry mixture and stir until well combined. Spoon into a lined cupcake pan until cases are 3/4 full. Bake for 18-22 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the cakes comes out clean. Remove from oven and leave to cool. Meanwhile, make the ganache. Heat the soya milk and golden syrup together in a pan until almost boiling. Break up dark chocolate in a bowl and pour the syrup mixture over the top. Stir until well combined. Add the vanilla extract and leave to sit at room temperature until set and ready to frost.
My last meal on earth would be… Frenchie to Go’s Reuben sandwich. It can’t be beaten! When I feel down I cook… cacio e pepe: the simplest pasta dish made from just spaghetti, Parmesan and pepper. My favourite London restaurants are… The Barbary and the Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels (an amazing wine bar and small plates restaurant). Both are located in Neal’s Yard, just around the corner from where I live, so you’ll often find me there unwinding after service, or on my days off. My ultimate London day consists of… waking early and going for a run in Hyde Park. I grab a coffee at Monmouth afterwards and pop into Paul Smith for a spot of shopping. Next up, a long lunch at The River Cafe followed by a visit to Tate Modern. In the evening I’d go to Bar Termini for a Negroni, followed by dinner at The Barbary and a trip to the theatre to see The Book of Mormon. From 12-18 February, diners at Frenchie can enjoy a special five course Valentine’s Tasting Menu including Champagne and nibbles for £75 (£125 including wine pairings). 16 Henrietta Street, WC2E (020 7836 4422; frenchiecoventgarden.com)

China isn’t all big cities and traffic jams; enjoy an exotic break with these tips from Edward Yuan, general manager of The Sanya EDITION. “Located on Hainan Island, just off the coast of Southern China, The Sanya EDITION is inspired by the sea, and water – a source of vitality and serenity – defines the hotel’s lush grounds. Continuing the watery theme, you can enjoy a taste of the sea directly from the fishermen’s skiff at nearby Houhai fish village. ‘Yupai’ is the local name given to the lively floating village of restaurants and bars here. It’s a great place to enjoy the daily catch, and everything is full of local flavour. Fancy a spot of surfing? Houhai, in Haitang Bay is also China’s secret surf spot. As well as being a base for some of the country’s top surfers, there are also lessons on offer here for beginners hoping to ride the waves. If secluded beaches are your thing, head to Yalong Bay’s yacht club, where you can hire a private catamaran, complete with your own captain who will take you to the quietest beaches and the best snorkelling spots. Looking for something slightly higher octane? A trip to the Wuzhishan Mountains offers an opportunity to explore a real tropical rainforest, and the river rafting excursions here come highly recommended. Powder and the glory
The Tarentaise Valley in France is home to some of the world’s most famous skiing, but while the crowds head for the mega resorts of Courchevel, Méribel, and Val d’Isère, the real magic is to be found in Sainte Foy, at the luxurious Chalet Merlo WOR DS P E N NY CL E M ENTS

t is early in the morning in the foothills of Sainte Foy, in South-Eastern France, and the clouds are heavy, filled with perfect, powdery snow. It floats across the sky where the air is thin, high above the Tarentaise Valley, one of the most idyllic spots in the French Alps. As I swish down the wide, tree-lined slopes, I stop
for a moment to take in one of life’s greatest riches: absolute silence. The fresh, cold mountain air fills my lungs and my adrenaline pumps. It is the start of the ski season, and at this precious moment, there is not one soul around – this couldn’t be any further from my daily life in the hustle of central London…
T R AV E L
Home for the week is one of Premiere Neige’s most luxurious catered chalet retreats. Founded in 2001, and winner of ‘Britain’s Best Ski Operator’ at the Telegraph Travel Awards 2017, Premiere Neige is Sainte Foy’s longest standing chalet company. Catered chalets are looked after day-to-day by their own hosts, who are on hand to pander to guests’ every need, both day and night, while a private chef ensures they want for nothing. And with a dedicated concierge service to arrange extras such as mountain guides, heli-transfers and spa treatments, a truly memorable break is guaranteed. Built in a quintessentially Alpine style from local wood and stone, Chalet Merlo is set high above the Isère Valley, nestled in the heart of the pretty village of Le Miroir. The cosy interiors are the definition of hygge: exposed wooden beams, comfy sofas and a seemingly
chalet’s talented team. A lavish gourmet dinner follows: the creamiest crab risotto to start, followed by tender duck breast and rounded off with a naughty-but-nice cheesecake. Everything has been prepared using the freshest ingredients and is exquisitely presented and served paired with fine wines chosen by Premiere Neige’s resident sommelier. Afterwards, replete, we stagger outside, braving the cold for a dip in the hot tub. Not just an antidote to ski-weary muscles, with its breathtaking view of the snow-covered valley and the twinkling lights of distant villages, it is a magical end to the day. I could sit here all night, but sensibly decide to turn in early, excited to get back out on the slopes the next morning. On waking, we fortify ourselves with a hearty breakfast prepared by the chef: delicious eggs Benedict washed down with strong coffee. It’s
by 4pm, when we make our final run, I’m exhausted and eager to unwind back at the chalet. An evening of luxury awaits, with a post-ski massage to soothe aching muscles, followed by another gourmet feast. The next morning the sky is crystal-clear and we are treated to the spectacular sight of the sun breaking over the Isère Valley and the peaks of Mont Pourri and L’Aiguille Rouge. The light trickles down the valley, making the virgin snow glisten. Later that day, while exploring the village, we discover Chez Mérie. Less than 100 metres from the chalet, it also happens to be one of the best restaurants in the area. Inside is gorgeous – a roaring log fire, sheepskin rugs, and lots of gnarled wood and quirky décor. We make a booking to come back later in the week, on the chalet chef’s day off.

ever-burning log fire. Floor-to-ceiling windows sweep the length of the building, affording gorgeous views of the valley below (when the weather allows). There is room for 12 of us, in six comfortable bedrooms, each with an en suite fully stocked with luxury toiletries. And while we might not be right on the piste, with chauffeurdriven minivans to take us to wherever the ski conditions are best, and all of the famous resorts within easy reach, it is the perfect spot for an extended family break (where après ski comes in the form of an on-site gym, sauna, fully secluded outdoor hot tub and private massage suite, rather than cool bars and hip restaurants). As the sun sets on our first day of skiing, heavy snow begins to fall. Thankful for the fire, we settle in for the night, tucking into predinner Champagne and canapés prepared by the
still snowing heavily and visibility is low, but despite this, I’m eager to get out. Sainte Foy itself might have only four lifts, but it offers something that the neighbouring mega resorts cannot: quiet, uncrowded slopes that are just as good for beginners as for enthusiasts who want to enjoy the vast untracked powder slopes. I’ve asked the team to arrange a guide and am introduced to Christel, of Snocool ski school, who is keen to show off the area. Before I know it we are off-piste, racing through the beautiful wooded landscape. In the middle of the day, we stop to recharge at Les Marquises, a restaurant perched high above the valley. As we prepare to leave, the sun breaks through the moody winter light for just long enough to reveal the astonishing views of Mont Pourri and the Turia glacier. We spend a glorious afternoon lapping the slopes and carving shapes in the snow, but
For me, the draw is simple: whether you live for the pistes, love a taste of Alpine culture or just fancy warming your toes in front of the fire, the dramatic sight of the Tarentaise Mountains from Chalet Merlo is unrivalled. This luxurious chalet ticks every box on the holiday wish-list, and then some…

H I G H G AT E ’ S V I L L AG E V I B E Surrounded by greenery, with quaint winding streets and a close-knit community, this sought-after neighbourhood feels more rural than urban Originally part of the Bishop of London’s vast hunting estate, Highgate has been a village since the 1500s. It was a stopping off point for travellers on their way into and out of London – which accounts for the large number of inns and pubs that locals can still enjoy today. Thanks to its lofty position – it’s the highest point in London – in the 1800s it became a retreat for the gentry escaping from the crowds and pollution of the city. Over the centuries, Highgate has been home to notable names from the world of science, politics and the arts. Famous residents have included Christina Rossetti, T.S. Eliot, Michael Faraday and Karl Marx, who is buried in the East Cemetery. Today, this quiet enclave of north London is popular with celebrities looking to escape the glare of the paparazzi – Kate
Moss, Jude Law and Jamie Oliver have all succumbed to the area’s considerable charms. Once settled in Highgate, residents tend to be reluctant to move. And it’s not hard to see why. With Highgate Wood, Hampstead Heath and Waterlow Park on the doorstep, there’s an abundance of green space, not to mention breathtaking views of the city. But if you miss the Capital’s buzz, you can hop on the Tube and be in the West End in just 17 minutes and in the

City in just over 20 minutes. The centre of the village is still dominated by Georgian architecture – few parts of London are this well preserved. But history has not got in the way of progress; there’s a fantastic range of independent shops alongside high street names, and a wide choice of places to eat and drink. Highgate is particularly well-served with historic pubs, including The Flask, The Bull (which has its own microbrewery) and The Duke’s Head. There’s a vibrant cultural scene, too – Highgate has its own theatre, Jacksons Lane (Matt Lucas and David Walliams performed their first double act there), and a thriving music venue, The Boogaloo. Kenwood House, with its world-famous
art collection, is a few minutes’ walk away on the edge of Hampstead Heath. Highgate has long been popular with young families looking for more outdoor space and good schools. Highgate School and Channing School are highly regarded independent schools, and there are excellent state options too. This ‘hilltop village’ now boasts a stunning new development of contemporary homes. Highgate Court offers a selection of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, with a penthouse and five-bedroom townhouse – just minutes from the Tube and Highgate Wood and close to the village centre.

BETWEEN THE EAVES A loft conversion is a trusted and time-honoured way to not only add extra space to your home, but to add value, too. And while converting your attic can turn a three-bed terraced house from cosy to commodious – perfect for growing families – it’s worth noting that attic extensions also exist to realise dream spaces, be that a creative home office, an imaginative kids’ playroom, or a luxurious at-home spa. In fact, when it comes to lofty ambitions, the sky’s the limit WO RDS ALI H OWARD
Furnishing an attic room comes with its own set of criteria. Unconventionally shaped spaces and sloping ceilings call for careful planning. But what you may lack in wall space, you more than make up for in versatility – as an extra room, your attic can be whatever you want it to be. Open plan loft spaces work brilliantly, particularly when planning a master bedroom complete with its own spectacular en suite. As a self-contained unit at the very top of the building, privacy is no longer an issue, so why not use the space to create the perfect 66 |

Transforming a converted loft space into an office is a home-worker’s dream. Surrounded with creature comforts yet separated from the rest of the house, the attic-turned-office becomes a wholly creative environment that, up in the rafters, affords you a bit of distance and precious head-space as you shut yourself away to concentrate on work. This Hampstead home office (main image), by interior design practice LEIVARS, makes a feature wall out of the shape of the slanting roof to create symmetry and focus, while the neutral tones and clean lines of the furnishings add to the room’s inviting sense of calm. guest room to give any boutique hotel a run for its money. Separated only by a wall of glass, this ultramodern master bedroom (left) and chic en suite bathroom beautifully exaggerate the room’s angled proportions, giving it real architectural edge. A daringly opened-up suite like this demands the clean lines of a contemporary free-standing bath to fully celebrate the space. Omina natural stone free-standing bath, £3,200 (homeetcbathroom.com)

Opposite page, clockwise from bottom left: utilise open plan space to create a boutique hotel-style guest suite; M&S’s Olin chaise has been designed with diminutive spaces in mind; find head-space in a home office under the eaves; Duette’s blinds are custommade to fit any window shape; clever modular shelving from Tylko adapts to fit in the trickiest of spaces
Of course, converting loft space to living space creates a need for seriously smart storage solutions. Bespoke fitted wardrobes can cleverly disguise any dead space in the eaves, while hidden storage in the shape of a nifty partition unit can keep the room clutter-free and at the same time, create a practical interior wall. Shape-shifting and modular shelving such as the new Tylko system really comes into its own in a loft. Whether you’re looking to erect bookshelves that follow the sliding lines of the ceiling, or a low-lying bench to fit neatly under low, angled windows (right), these box clever pieces are customisable to adapt to your living space. From £151 (tylko.com) Sloping and hard to reach windows and skylights require specialist blinds or shutters that not only block out the sunlight, but keep the strong lines of the loft conversion elegant and precise. Duette offer a range of energy efficient blinds that can be custom-made to suit any window shape (top right), along with child-friendly operating systems for those with inquisitive toddlers. Converting your attic space into a playroom or a small child’s bedroom is ideal if you’re otherwise limited in square footage. Energy saving blinds start at around £150 (duette.co.uk)
Finally, when it comes to furnishing a smaller room with sloping ceilings and limited wall space, it’s important to give careful consideration to which pieces will make the most of those tricky dimensions. Always keep furnishings in proportion and try not to overwhelm the space. We love M&S Home’s LOFT collection, which has been designed specifically for smaller rooms. The diminutive Olin corner chaise (opposite page, top left) would work beautifully beneath a slanting skylight. From £399 (marksandspencer.com) FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

N I L O U FA R BAKHTIAR-BAKHTIARI INTERIOR DESIGNER
The founder of NBB Design studied law and languages but couldn’t resist pursuing an early ambition to work in interior design. Known for creating effortlessly elegant spaces, her own home is a charming blend of classic and contemporary What drew you to this house? We were living in a small place that we’d outgrown and had been househunting for a while. After we’d seen about 50 places, I said, “This is ridiculous, we have to give it a break.” But we went to see this house anyway and I immediately fell in love with it. The joy of this house is its width – most London houses are narrow and have too many floors. This has four; it’s light, it has a garden and a roof terrace. Plus, it had very good vibes. We secured the sale because we got on well with the previous owners and they saw that we loved the house, just as they did.
What work did you carry out on it? The house was very different when we bought it – the basement was a separate flat and it was divided up into lots of rooms. But I saw its potential and talked to an engineer before we made an offer, to make sure that what I wanted to do was possible. We did a massive amount of work: we moved the staircase, put in en suite bathrooms and created a fireplace in my bedroom. We also moved the kitchen from the basement to the ground floor, so that it had light and was next to the proper dining and living room space. How did the interior design evolve? The first item I bought for this house was the pink Yves Klein coffee table in the living room. It set the bold, vibrant tone for the house. I used a colour called Suede from Paint & Paper Library throughout the house as a background. It’s a very soft base – in the living room I used bright reds and pinks to dial it up. Next to the Yves Klein table there are two Louis XVI armchairs – I love mixing classic and contemporary. I think if a space is too contemporary and neat, it looks gorgeous in a magazine, but the minute you put your handbag down, the look is spoiled. I wanted lots of bookshelves, too. Books are very important in my life, but bookshelves aren’t FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

just for books. I like to incorporate lighting into them and they can be a good way of displaying art and artefacts that can bring a room to life in a very different way. One of my trademarks is using fabric on cupboard and wardrobe doors. That’s because I hate cupboard doors! They’re cold and they shout “I’m utilitarian!”. Fabric helps bring in colour – I used a pale ochre/orange in my bedroom and it’s softer than painting a wall in a colour. The way the light bounces off fabric is different to the way it bounces off a wall. I treat every room as a living space – in my house, my daughter is on the same floor as me and my son is on the floor above, so sometimes we just sit on different levels of the staircase and chat. I always treat hallways and corridors as spaces that you spend time in and don’t just whizz through. I’ve experimented a bit in this house, too. I’ve wanted to use leather with my clients for ages, but no-one has been brave enough. So the whole of the basement floor is leather. It ages fabulously, it’s soft to the touch and warm.
Where do you get your inspiration from? I get a lot of my inspiration from art exhibitions, the last one that really fired my imagination was Rachel Whiteread at Tate Britain. Some of the objects were very straight and angular – a window frame, for example – but they were cast in very soft, sensual materials, like resin. You felt that you had to touch them. She did a series of hot water bottles that she cast from the inside and then broke them to reveal the plaster, which is a beautiful soft pink. Even building plaster has inspired me. We were working on a client’s house, and I visited one day at the plastering stage. It was at the point where it was drying out, and it was a very subtle powder pink colour. I used that colour around the windows of a beach house in Greece instead of the traditional blue and it worked so well that I’m starting to use it a lot. It works with every other colour. Anything can inspire me – I have a friend, a shoe designer, who gifted me a beautiful pair of shoes. These shoes are on display right now, because they are a source of inspiration. Travel
INTERIORS
stimulates me too. Recently, I went to Russia and brought back a lot of ideas from St. Petersburg. I’m half Persian, so of course the Middle Eastern influence is also very important to me. What qualities do you look for in the fabrics and materials that you use? I look for something that is unusual. I love working with artisans – craftsmanship is important to me. I work a lot with Rothschild & Bickers, a young company that makes mouthblown glass. Their designs are stunning. Textures are important too. I like to mix different textured fabrics in the same tones, like velvet with linen. How a fabric falls is very important to me: I love doing curtains in cashmere. I also like mixing classic and traditional – putting a flashy contemporary fabric on an antique armchair. How do you work with clients? I always tell my clients, “If you don’t tell me how you live, how can I design a home that will work for you?” I always ask them, “What’s the first
thing that you do in your house when you get home? What do you do with your shoes, your keys, your bag, your coat? Where do you head to?” How they respond to colour is important, too. I worked with a couple recently who were used to everything white. And I said, “At NBB we don’t really do all white. We might do in a project in Greece, where the light is gorgeous, but in London, I’m not so keen.” So I showed them lots of different colours, and the woman was particularly drawn to ochre. It triggered memories of her grandmother’s room, where she cuddled her and read her stories. In my own house I’ve been bold with colour; when you make a room dramatic, it erases the imperfections. I do this a lot with guest rooms, which are often small, awkward spaces. What’s your most treasured item? It has to be a Fabergé-style music box with a little singing bird that was in my father’s house. I’ve always loved it. Whenever I moved house, I always put it in my handbag for safekeeping. BELSIZE PARK
Leafy and lovely, there’s no actual park here, but with Hampstead Heath and Primrose Hill just moments away, that’s no great loss for Belsize Park’s lucky residents. And the glorious green space is not all they have to be thankful for: tree-lined streets of handsome houses, a bohemian village atmosphere, highly rated schools, brilliant local businesses, a boutique cinema, plus enough eateries to dine out every night of the week and still be spoilt for choice. And if that weren’t enough, with the delights of both Hampstead and Primrose Hill on the doorstep, too, they need never venture into town – though, prettily placed in zone two, they could be in the centre of town in just 15 minutes should the need arise

LITTLE BLACK BOOK GABY NOBLE Despite spending time living abroad and in various London postcodes, having been brought up here, the founder of Exhale Pilates London is an NW3 girl through and through.
“The quaint and beautiful neighbourhood is an oasis from the big bustling vibrant city centre, and I love the fact that I can walk to town in under half an hour. We are fortunate to still have lots of local businesses, which I make a point of supporting. My friends joke that I need to leave the ‘Bermuda Triangle’ between work at my studio in Chalk Farm, walking the dog on Primrose Hill and sipping almond cappuccinos on England’s Lane, but why would I when I have all the comforts within a stone’s throw? As a Pilates studio owner, I’m often up at the crack of dawn, so having go-to places that are reliable and convenient is essential. If I’m not running late, or starting too early, there’s nothing I enjoy more than to pick up a smoothie from the juice bar in Budgens. Brunches, lunches and catch up coffees are a given in my week, and we are spoilt for choice with the variety of cafés here. My favourite is Chamomile on England’s Lane, which holds lots of memories from my student days at the Fine Arts College. I don’t eat a lot of meat, but when I do need to buy some, Barrett’s, the butchers over the road from Chamomile is my go-to. The quality is fantastic and you’ll always be guaranteed service with a smile. Summer months are often spent in my favourite pub garden, at The Stag. It’s such a hot spot that people travel from far and wide, especially for their famous Sunday roasts. Before a night out, or when age is creeping in and hair colour is required, the team at HOB provide the necessary TLC my hair requires. The lovely team have now become my friends. Spa & Massage is where I like to unwind; the girls who work there really know 76 |

what they’re doing, and – even more of a bonus – it’s reasonably priced. I usually go on a Sunday evening. It’s such a great way to end the weekend and prepare for another hectic week. My other go to Sunday night retreat would be the reclining seats at the Everyman cinema. Should Richard Caring or Corbin & King want to expand, there would be a huge uptake for a fabulous restaurant here, and should Nick Jones be reading this, an NW3 Soho House would be welcomed by freelancers looking for a place to work and network!” Exhale Pilates London, 81-84 Chalk Farm Road, NW1 (07843 053903; exhalepilateslondon.com)

LOCAL HEROES GINGER & WHITE, NW3 There’s no shortage of cute places to get your caffeine fix in this neck of the woods, but there’s one establishment that takes the (hand-baked) biscuit as far as James Diaper of Savills is concerned. “I love to grab a coffee from Ginger & White on England’s Lane, before taking a walk up to Belsize Park Gardens, where you can admire some of the most beautiful properties in the area.” Since moving down the hill from Perrin’s Court, it’s become a local institution – you have to be quick off the mark to bag a table for their fabulous weekend brunch. 2 England’s Lane, NW3 (020 7722 9944; gingerandwhite.com) POMONA, NW3 This local deli/grocer is open from 7am to 9pm, offers home delivery and stocks up to 50 varieties of bread – what more could you ask? Martin Callaghan opened the shop on Haverstock Hill in 2002, and the residents of Belsize Park have enjoyed fresh produce and fantastic service on their doorstep ever since. The shop is a firm favourite with David Stern of Parkheath: “This is the go-to place if you are looking for fresh, organic, locally-sourced quality produce. I especially like the variety of fruit on offer, with oranges, blackberries and strawberries being my favourites. I’ve often returned to the office with fruit that I’ve bought, only to have my colleagues devour it!” 179 Haverstock Hill, NW3 (020 7916 2676; pomonafoods.co.uk)
ALLCHIN PHARMACY, NW3 Allchin’s beautifully preserved Victorian facade is a familiar Belsize Park landmark. Inside it offers everything you could possibly want from a neighbourhood pharmacy: prescription dispensing and delivery service, blood pressure monitoring and cholesterol checks, flu jabs and travel vaccinations, as well as a fantastic selection of toiletries, perfume and high-end skincare. Local resident George Miskin is a big fan. “It’s brilliant having such a well-stocked chemist at the end of the road. The travel vaccination service is particularly handy – it’s easy to make an appointment – and the staff are always really helpful.” 28 England’s Lane, NW3 (020 7586 4683; allchinpharmacy.co.uk)
DID YOU KNOW? From top: Ginger & White is a local institution; Pomona is the place to go for quality organic produce; Belsize Park’s friendly neighbourhood pharmacy
In the 18th century, the area, known then as just Belsize, became popular with well-to-do Londoners looking for somewhere to build grand country retreats. The most famous of which is probably Belsize House, where one of the richest men in England, Colonel Daniel O’Neill, opened pleasure gardens in 1720. Visitors, including the Prince and Princess of Wales, flocked there, spending their days fishing and hunting in the grounds, and their nights in the lavish ballroom – wining, dining and dancing. Things quickly got out of hand, descending into bawdiness, vice and illegal gaming, and the house was closed in the 1740s.

WHERE THERE’S A WILL THERE’S A WAY
So many people wait for a major life event before “getting their will sorted”, but putting it off can have unforeseen consequences. Here are six reasons why you should make a will now to protect your loved ones in the future Reason One. “My spouse/civil partner will get everything anyway, right?” Wrong. If you are married (and have children), your spouse will only be entitled to the first £250,000 of your estate, your personal possessions (your car, jewellery etc.) and half of the remainder of your estate. So if you want to ensure your spouse is adequately provided for (i.e. leave all of your estate to them) you must state this in your will. Reason Two. Soon to be ex-spouse or civil partner You may be separated, but not yet divorced from your spouse. In this scenario (unless you have a judicial separation), your spouse would still benefit from your estate. Therefore, if this is not your wish, it is essential to formally record this by making a will. Reason Three. Avoid your estate going to the sister you don’t talk to If you do not make a valid will, your estate will
pass to your descendants in a strict order determined by the rules of intestacy. This may not be appropriate or what you would want to happen within your family set-up, especially as these rules do not include a cohabitant or longterm partner. The initial order of those entitled to your estate will be your spouse or civil partner, children, parents, followed by your whole blood brothers and sisters, their descendants, and then your half brothers and sisters, and their descendants. Reason Four. Babies You can appoint guardians for your young children in your will. This way, you get to choose who would look after them if the worst was to happen to you and your partner, rather than leaving the grandmas to battle it out. Reason Five. Paws and fur If you are an animal lover, you can express a wish in your will about who you would like to look after your beloved pets.
Reason Six. Limit stress Leaving your affairs in a mess for your loved ones to deal with creates an added stress at an already difficult time. A will enables you to appoint responsible, trustworthy adults to be your executors so that they can deal with your assets on your death by simply following your wishes and instructions. If you would like more information about making a will, contact Tanya Lloyd at Osbornes on 020 7485 8811.

Schools THOUGHT PIECE
Body Talk Poor body image has become a big issue in schools: according to the Be Real Campaign, two in three pupils going back to school last September had appearance concerns. Among children with other risk factors, these concerns could turn into an eating disorder – and certain kinds of school could even increase the risk. A 2016 University of Oxford study found that girls at majority-female schools, with high numbers of university-educated parents, were more likely to be diagnosed with an eating disorder than girls at minority-female schools, with fewer university-educated parents. “Anecdotally, body image does seem to be a problem at highly academic girls’ schools,” says Beth Noakes, editor of The Good Schools Guide. “But it’s hard to know how much of this comes from the competitive environment and how much from the parents. Social media is definitely a factor, too – looking good online has become a constant pressure.” The problem also starts early. In 2015, a joint US/UK study found that two of the major risk factors for developing an eating disorder – low self-esteem and poor body image – can be present in children as young as eight. “To nip these issues in the bud, you need to model how you want your children to behave,” says Beth. “If you’re pushy, or
always going on diets, they’ll pick up on it. Make sure your children know you appreciate them for who they are, not what they achieve (or weigh).” A good prep school will look out for crucial early signs, too – and senior schools usually cover body image as part of their Personal, Health and Social Education (PHSE). To be sure your child’s school is doing the right things, Beth suggests checking that it: 1 has a zero tolerance policy around any kind of bullying, especially teasing about appearance 2 teaches media literacy (being able to analyse the messages being put across, and see when someone’s image has been Photoshopped, makes children more questioning) 3 offers assertiveness training, so that vulnerable children – especially girls – have confidence in expressing their own views, as well as in their bodies 4 knows and actively looks for the signs that a child has developed a problem. Directory THE INTERIOR DESIGNER
C A R LY M A D H VA N I NW3 Interiors What’s your design ethos? To teach clients how to make the best choices for now and forever. It’s not just telling them what would look best, but explaining why – and being available for the long haul. Designing a home is a privilege and my clients become friends. I mentor designers too; I love to help others learn. What can you offer that others may not be able to? My appointment-only Hampstead home-showroom is pretty special. It provides an inviting space for my clients to see where I live and work, and gives an insight into how I can help them to achieve their own harmonious home. What’s your personal ethos? That the more you work on something, the better it gets. Describe your dream project A Modernist building from Grand Designs! I’d create a furniture and decoration package from renowned designers, and source my favourite finishes (marbles, super-soft fabrics and real wood). Can I have a dream budget too, please? What’s your top tip for heating a home in winter? One of the best products I have in my home is a portable bio-ethanol fire. It’s on a stand so you can carry it from room to room, creating warmth and atmosphere. What advice would you give to someone looking to appoint an interior designer? Ask designers how they react when things go wrong. What policies do they have in place? Who can they call upon to get things moving? Situations will always arise that no one has thought of – it’s how we work them through that matters NW3 Interiors Ltd, Garden Flat, 10 Lyndhurst Gardens, NW3 (020 7209 4442; nw3interiorsltd.com) 84 |

THOUGHT PIECE
How to keep warm this winter You may love the original windows in your Edwardian villa or Victorian terrace. But they could be one of the main reasons why your home never feels quite warm enough “London homes often lose masses of heat, most of it through single-glazed windows and the roof,” says Ian Fisher of Pimlico Plumbers. “That’s why, when people ask us to install new radiators, we tell them to fit double or triple glazing and insulate the roof first. Otherwise they’ll be wasting their money.” Once you’ve tackled the main causes of heat loss, ask a heating engineer to calculate whether there are enough radiators in each room, and install more
if need be. “They might also find that your boiler isn’t big enough, and fit a superefficient condensing one,” says Ian. Some Londoners also dial up the cosiness with stoves and fires. “We’ve had an unprecedented demand for our award-winning wood-burning stoves this winter,” says Paul Chesney of Chesneys Fireside, which has a showroom on Haverstock Hill. “Our gas fires have been popular, too.” But even when you’ve invested in staying snug, the warmth can still sneak out. James Wakelin of Energy Saving Trust has three more tips for keeping heat where you want it – inside. Draught excluders are an inexpensive way to stop heat escaping under your doors. They’re quick and easy to install 1
and have very little impact on the aesthetic of your home. 2 If your fireplace is more of a decorative feature than a functional fire it’s likely to be a source of unnecessary draughts. Ask a professional to fit a cap over the chimney pot, or buy a chimney draught excluder (remember to remove the draught proofing if you do decide to light a fire). 3 If you have any unused fan outlets, ask a professional to fill them with bricks or concrete blocks and seal them from the inside and outside.

ASK THE AGENT
TEAM SPIRIT Since Jerome Walker joined TK International a few months ago, the lettings business has gone from strength to strength. Fabric put Jerome on the spot and asked him to share the secrets of a successful lettings team. He says: “Having spent six years at a large corporate agency, I was delighted to join an independent, boutique agency like TK. We can adapt our services and provide a tailored approach. That’s very difficult in corporate agencies with management departments based in a head office somewhere outside of London, run by people who have never even visited the properties they’re supposed to be managing! Using our extensive address book, we’ve managed to build our market share and are already looking to expand the team to manage the increased activity we have generated. It’s been a pleasure to help grow the department and to have had so much positive feedback from clients.” (t-k.co.uk)
BAMBOS HARALAMBOUS Goldschmidt & Howland
I’ve had lots of viewings but still no offers: is it worth repainting in a neutral palette? In a market where demand outstrips supply, buyers submit offers quickly to secure their purchase. With current stock levels, it is not surprising that buyers consider all options prior to commitment. We appreciate the effort required to provide a ‘show home’ during the marketing period, however, decluttering and freshly decorating can assist in appealing to a wider audience. This, alongside the main driver, sensible pricing, will engage motivated buyers and generate offers.
Years in the business? 17 this year. I love London because… it’s a stimulating city where I get to meet interesting people every day and every day is different. First London home? A top floor apartment in Islington that I lovingly refurbished before grudgingly selling it when my eldest child was born! If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… Bear Grylls.

Favourite London Street? Marylebone High Street. Favourite client? I have one particular client who has brought friends in to the office to introduce
to me. I get a huge sense of achievement to know that such clients trust me enough to refer their friends and family to me. Favourite haunts? The Science Museum – I have zero technical skills so find the exhibits there ever-fascinating.
Period property or new-build? Period. Take one person, dead, alive or fictional, out in London – who and where? Charles Dickens – we could walk the streets and he could tell me how they have changed.
Favourite place to grab a coffee? The Koppel Project on Baker Street. It’s actually an art gallery that sells fantastically strong coffee.
Aliens attack – which London landmark would you save? St. Paul’s Cathedral is one of the few constants in an ever evolving skyline and it is a symbol of London’s history.
Where do you go for head space in the city? Primrose Hill: it has the best view of the city and helps me to put things in perspective.
Creature comfort you can’t live without? My iPhone.
What’s your hidden talent? Definitely not dancing!
