Out with the old
Liz Skone James, Editor
No matter what your stance on New Year’s resolutions, it’s virtually impossible not to think about new starts as the calendar flips over. So it goes without saying that this issue is full of fresh ideas and new products. From our latest colour crush (petrol blue, since you ask), to this year’s hottest tiling trend (which is actually reassuringly ‘old’). And if, like so many of us, you have made a resolution to be fitter, healthier and happier this year, we’re here to give you a little helping hand. There’s advice on gym gear that not only looks great, but is also guaranteed to become a proactive part of your wellbeing; a recipe from rugby pro James Haskell designed to fuel you for fitness and a guide to the Capital’s vegan hotspots. If that all sounds a bit too much, we’ve a cheeky weekend escape to help beat the January blues. Here’s to a very happy and prosperous 2019.

Akram Khan Company: Until the Lions
Series 2 from mid-Jan If you’re looking for a New Year’s resolution that’s likely to stick, forget the gym and get your head into an inspirational podcast that gives the old grey matter a workout instead. Justyna Sowa is on a one woman mission to make design more accessible, increasing public understanding of its place – and positive impact – in everyday life. Launched late last year, the weekly podcast sees Justyna chatting to a wealth of creatives from the world of design: all talented, ambitious and passionate about what they do. This series’ guest list looks set to inspire, too. (on-design.co)
11-17 Jan | Roundhouse Wimbledon-born Khan has enjoyed a dream career, from dancing with Peter Brook’s Shakespeare company at 13, to choreographing for Kylie; performing at the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony, to receiving an MBE for services to dance. Suffice to say, his return to the Roundhouse will be incredibly
special. Adapted from Karthika Naïr’s Until the Lions: Echoes from the Mahabharata, this breathtaking production explores gender and time in a battle for justice and liberty. He expands: “As in many myths, the female characters are often the unsung heroes, the figures of strength and imagination and endurance. It is their unsung stories in particular that still haunt me today.” Chalk Farm Road, NW1 (roundhouse.org.uk) fabricmagazine.co.uk

THEATRE
Home, I’m Darling
26 Jan-13 Apr The Duke of York’s Theatre There’s a love of vintage – clothes, homewares, hairdos – and then there’s retreating into the 1950s to become the perfect housewife, complete with petticoat, rolling pin, and retro social values. Judy, played by The IT Crowd’s Katherine Parkinson, takes ’50s nostalgia to the extreme in Laura Wade’s biting new comedy. But once she’s seen husband Johnny off to work with a cooked breakfast and a kiss, the cracks begin to appear, and so does her laptop. How long can she keep up the façade? With a sell-out run at the National, Home, I’m Darling now sees its West End transfer. Timothy Ginn ©Trunkman Productions Katherine Parkinson as Judy in Home, I’m Darling (c) Manuel Harlan

Life is Rosie At just 23, London actor Rosie Day is Living the Dream. Rarely not working, she has a number of awards to her name. We caught up to talk life and latest projects by Liz Skone James
She was named as a Rising Star in the 2017 InStyle BAFTA awards, an accolade you’d normally associate with newcomers, but Rosie Day tells me that she’s actually been doing this for 20 years. Her earliest memories revolve around stage and screen: eating breakfast on catering buses as a four-year-old with her toy bunny in tow, or “performing at the National with Sir Trevor Nunn and being carried around by him,” which is, she admits, “the most ridiculous sounding actor story ever!” With her diminutive frame, fresh face, and giggly personality, it’s hard to believe that Rosie is old enough to have been doing this for that long. She is actually 23, and her CV already includes 43 film and TV credits. She played the
central character of Mary Hawkins in the timetravel saga Outlander, voiced one of the rabbits in this Christmas’ much anticipated Watership Down and has worked on the big screen alongside Uma Thurman (“When I found out, I was like: ‘Sorry, sorry what? Uma Thurman’,” she laughs). Casting directors obviously agree that she looks younger than her years, because she often gets cast in the role of a teenager, like Tina Pemberton in Living the Dream. The first series, from the makers of Cold Feet, premiered in 2017 with an audience of 830,000 – making it the biggest launch of a comedy drama on Sky One since 2012 – and it returns for a second series this month. Tina is the 17-year-old daughter of Mal and Jen (played by Philip Glenister and Lesley Sharp),
who up sticks from Yorkshire, taking their two teenaged kids with them, to run a trailer park in Florida. But their dream life there quickly, and somewhat hilariously, goes down the pan. Rosie says when she was approached about the role she was thrilled to: “read a script where a family all genuinely really liked one another,” and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work with Glenister and Sharp (“Two actors that I really admire”). She describes it as: “The loveliest job in the world: it feels like we go on holiday together and make a TV show. It is really good fun…” Series two meant four months filming away from home, which is something Rosie is now quite used to. In fact, she views seeing the world as something of a perk of the job. It is not always fabricmagazine.co.uk
43
easy though: “I think that as long as you are busy, it is fine. It is in the down moments when you start to miss people. I have a real routine at home in London, so I really miss that,” she explains. That is something that may have been behind her decision this time last year to return to her stage roots, in the premiere of Again by Stephanie Jacob, at the Trafalgar Studios. “I don’t often get to see all of my friends and family, but when you do a play, everyone comes to watch and you get to see them afterwards,” she laughs. As well as being a great social opportunity, though, taking the job turned out to be something of a pivotal career moment for Rosie. “I don’t know what happened, but it lit something in me that blew my mind. It was the best feeling in the world. I was just obsessed by it, so theatre is definitely something that I want to do more of, alongside screen.” Whether on stage or screen, Rosie doesn’t take herself too seriously: “I think of it as a game,” she grins. “We get to be other people, like we did when we were kids. It is make-believe – complete
fantasy. And what a great way to earn your pay.” The best bit of playing pretend? “Literally my favourite thing is dressing up; I love being able to go to work and not having to care about what I look like. That’s somebody else’s job!” Fun and games aside, Rosie is, she tells me, immensely proud of everything she has achieved, and of still being here, 20 years on. And she is beginning to branch out, concentrating on writing and developing scripts. “Writing is a thing I do every day,” she nods enthusiastically. “I set up a female-driven film company with a friend last year. We specifically want to make female-driven narratives. It’s a cool way to have some control in this industry.” Rosie has been hard at work, and already has plenty to show for the initiative. “Me and my friend wrote a TV series, and we have just had the pilot optioned by a production company,” she tells me excitedly. And there is more, in the form of a short film, a thriller called Tracks, which Rosie wrote and directed with friends,
fundraising on Kickstarter to get it off the ground. “We are literally just finishing up now, and we are moving on to make another one now. We’re planning to show them at the festivals…” It’s amazing she has time for anything else, but Rosie is also an ambassador for teenage mental health charity stem4, and visits schools to talk about the impact of mental illness on young people and their families. “The statistics are that one in four teenage girls are now self-harming, which terrifies me,” she reveals. “With the rise of social media, so has come the rise of mental illness in young people. The work that stem4 are doing is unparalleled; and I love kids, so to work with them… I am very proud to be a part of it.” Rosie looks after her own wellbeing by making time to run. “It clears my head: I think that is my thing,” she says, adding: “I also bake. I feel like they go quite well together… they cancel each other out! I have jokingly applied for The Great British Bake Off 2019!” If things pan out, we could be seeing Rosie everywhere this year.
“It is make-believe at the end of the day. Complete fantasy. And what a great way to earn your pay”

Wear this: Back Label Want to take a more holistic approach to wellness this year? Start by taking a good hard look at your gym gear: there’s something inherently contradictory about wearing plastic (in the form of polyester) next to our skin when it is at its most vulnerable. Following a career in modelling and consulting for niche fashion brands from around the world, Amy Perricone started to think about the growing consciousness for what we eat and what products we use on our skin, and how this could be applied to clothing. With an idea up her organic cotton sleeves, she set about creating a line of
loungewear that was safe, healthy and toxin-free, sourcing unusual natural fabrics that were PH neutral, antibacterial, breathable and extremely soft. A collection of sportswear followed, created using breathable and toxin-free cotton with the same performance as polyester. Timeless design coupled with innovative technology: Back Label is all about the belief that clothing should be more than organic and ethically-soured, but a proactive part of looking after our wellbeing whilst not compromising on style, and we love it. The entire collection is available online at backlabel.com

Facial mapping This new treatment works on the entire face and can transform round faces into defined, sharp silhouettes. Before they’ve even gone near a needle, using 3D imaging and augmented reality, clients get a chance to see what their face will look like post treatment. Results are achieved using bespoke fillers. Botox Still the number one requested treatment, in 2019 the Botox market is going to be blown apart thanks to a new B-type 2 toxin. You’ll need less of it and the results will last longer. Watch this space. No-peel peels Peels have traditionally been aggressive on the skin, but smarter peels are coming that create the same result with zero downtime. Treating everything from acne and redness to hyperpigmentation, they subtly alter the pH of the skin, to trigger a gentle but effective peel. You will still need a course of them and they don’t come cheap, but you will be able to walk straight back into work with no visible signs of shedding. Low energy lasers Meet the Biyonik – the new low energy laser that works with your heartbeat. The idea is that your cells are most permeable and receptive when your heart is about to pump, so by using a pulse oximeter, the lasers surge just before your heart beats. The Food Psychology Clinic Perhaps it’s just me, but I feel change in the air. The more I speak to other women about the age old complaints we have about our bodies, our diets, our relationships with food, the more I suspect that we are getting a bit… well, fed up. Diets don’t work: we know that. Eating healthily and exercising regularly in the long term does, but so many of us find that hard to achieve. Simultaneously, we are constantly chiding ourselves for the size of our thighs, or eating that biscuit – failing, basically, to be happy with ourselves. And I for one am over it. I want to break this cycle and undo my relationship with food, rebuilding in its place a healthier one, that is kinder to myself. As most women I know would tell you: no mean feat.
Enter The Food Psychology Clinic, and its founder Uxshely Chotai. Uxshely, formerly a corporate lawyer, is a practitioner in a range of therapies – psychoand hypnotherapy, biomedicine, neurolinguistic programming – and is passionate about helping people shift their relationships with food, from damaged and disordered to positive. I committed to three sessions with her, and we moved seamlessly between these disciplines – so seamlessly that it felt more like a safe and supportive chat with a big sister than ‘therapy’ – all rounded off with a hypnotherapy session that, to say the least, I was initially sceptical about. Cleverly, the ‘twist’ is that Uxshely sends you a recording of your hypnotherapy session, with the recommendation that you listen to it at least once a day (or as often as required), meaning the work continues long after you’ve left her cosy Holborn clinic. We worked on freeing myself from that oh-so-familiar cycle of dieting and falling off the wagon, and the idea that confidence could be mine whatever dress size I was wearing. As good as Uxshely is – and she is really, really good – no one short of a miracle worker could completely undo all those years of unhelpful habits in three sessions, of course. I have a long way to go to be in the place I would like to be. But Uxshely has given me some valuable tools (not least those pick-me-up recordings) and set me on a path to positivity that I am determined to see through. I am firmly of the opinion that investing in a healthier, happier you could be the best money you ever spend. KH Treatment costs £400 for three sessions at the clinic. 4 Staple Inn, WC1V (thefoodpsychologyclinic.co.uk)
Join the club Want to be happier as well as healthier this year? Why not swap your gym for a new breed of wellness club? Set in the heart of Notting Hill, Cloud Twelve offers a sanctuary in the city for the whole family. Facilities include a crèche and forest-themed play area for little ones (with its own plant-based café), available to members only, and an indulgent spa, luxury salon, holistic wellness clinic and healthy brasserie, which are also open to non-members. As well as a relaxation room, sauna, steam rooms and a Himalayan salt room, the gorgeous spa boasts six treatment rooms, and offers a menu of non-invasive Western and Ayurvedic-inspired treatments. Meanwhile, at the wellness clinic a mix of therapy and coaching sessions are available, alongside Chinese medicine, craniosacral therapy, osteopathy and cryotherapy. It’s all about achieving emotional, mental and physical balance, with a serious dose of fun, and we think it’s a brilliant addition to the neighbourhood (not to mention easier to stick to than the gym.) 2-5 Colville Mews, W11. A FRESH APPROACH Looking to shake up your fitness routine in 2019? Look no further than the Garuda Pilates Studio in St. John’s Wood, where classes stretch the mind as well as the body Above: the team of expert practitioners at the Garuda Pilates Studio Left: a one-to-one session on the Garuda apparatus Below: Garuda mat work develops core strength
Whether you’re looking for a group class or one-to-one training, James D’Silva’s elegant, light-filled NW8 studio is the ideal place to start your yoga, Pilates or Garuda journey. For busy, time-poor Londoners, these mindful forms of exercise are the ideal way to tune out from the stresses of urban life. The Garuda Studio offers personal training and group classes on traditional Pilates equipment, specialised Garuda apparatus, mat and barre. The vision of dancer James D’Silva, the Garuda Method combines the core strength and focus of Pilates with the balletic grace of dance. Taking its name from the mythical shape-shifting bird, Garuda offers all the benefits of a robust cardiovascular workout, while developing flexibility and poise at the same time. “Where Pilates ends, Garuda begins,” is D’Silva’s mantra. Using mat, barre and specialised apparatus, Garuda builds on Pilates’ linear stretches, adding spiral movements that connect the spine to the extremities. Routines are meticulously choreographed, with the emphasis on smooth, fluid movements that tone the body without placing any stress on delicate joints. Garuda demands total concentration, stretching the mind as well as the body – expect to end a session with a deep sense of serenity and wellbeing. The Garuda Pilates Studio boasts an expert team of highlyexperienced practitioners, led by D’Silva himself, who has worked with Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow, among others. The team works with clients from a diverse range of exercise backgrounds, from absolute beginners and those with movement limitations, to professional dancers and sportsmen and women. Individual attention and correction are central to all the classes at the Studio. Mat classes are limited to groups of no more than 14, while Garuda apparatus classes have a maximum of five per class. For those who are not sure which discipline will best suit their needs, the Studio offers taster sessions in mat and barre, as well as a four-week introductory package that offers mat and barre classes. Whether you’re recovering from a physical injury, looking for an alternative to traditional gym workouts, or you are an accomplished athlete keen to build fitness and boost performance, the Garuda Pilates Studio will get your 2019 fitness regime off to a flying start. 26-28 Finchley Road, NW8 (020 7483 4644; thegaruda.net)

Avoid pesticides and hormones
by always choosing organic meats, dairy, fruit and vegetables. Try to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables in a rainbow of colours each day. Wash everything before preparing (preferably with soap and a brush) and steam or stir fry rather than cooking in water. Alternatively, think about juicing – not only a delicious way to get your daily quota of fruit and vegetables, it will also provide a highly concentrated source of nutrients. Swap plastic wraps and containers
for beeswax or silicone wraps and use refillable glass bottles for water. Cook in coconut butter or olive oil (the latter should be stored in the fridge at all times). Add spices to every meal: ginger, turmeric and coriander are all good choices. Try to cut down on dairy: use humus, nut butter and avocado in place of butter. Alongside her work at Grace, Gabriela has also developed a range of cleansing and rejuvenating supplement programmes. Brand new to the collection this year is Gold, a seven-day programme containing essential vitamins and minerals to increase nutritional activity in the body. For more details, see gpnutrition.com
Recipe for change
Resolving to change the way you eat is very easy in the fug of festive overindulgence, but sticking to your guns when life returns to normality in January isn’t always easy. This year we’re seeking fresh inspiration in the kitchen from Hampstead-based Emily Wright, who offers bespoke meal planning services alongside personalised cookery courses, with a focus on using healthy, natural and delicious ingredients. The discovery that her husband had a BRCA 1 gene mutation (making him, and potentially both of their children, statistically more susceptible to certain types of cancers) persuaded Emily to take a pro-active approach to changing their
lifestyle, and their diets in particular. She secured a place on a Nutrition in Culinary Practice course at Leiths Cookery School, where she discovered more about the power food has in supporting health and wellbeing. And now she’s sharing that knowledge with us, with the focus very much on what we can eat. Whether you’re struggling to manage allergies and intolerances, dealing with fussy kids, or simply want to lose some weight this year, Emily will make it easy. And if you still need convincing, check out some of the delicious recipes on her website – who said healthy equalled boring? Started a new fitness regime this year? Did you know that any successful exercise plan relies heavily on eating the right diet? Enter professional rugby player James Haskell and sports performance chef Omar Meziane, whose new book, Cooking for Fitness, has been designed to help you to boost your training performance and achieve your body goals, with 79 recipes split into low-carb and high-carb meals, to reflect different training days, and healthy, easy to make, pre- and post-workout snacks. Here’s one of our favourites, a delicious breakfast designed to fuel you pre-workout.
Ingredients
knob of butter 1 large handful curly kale, tough stalks removed 2 large handfuls baby spinach leaves salt and pepper to season 200ml tomato passata 4 large eggs ½ avocado, chopped 2 tablespoons finely grated Parmesan cheese
Method
1. Preheat your oven to 200°C. 2. Melt the butter in a medium-sized saucepan over a medium heat. Toss in the kale and season with salt and pepper. Cook the kale until it begins to wilt. Add the spinach and remove from the heat, but continue to stir until the spinach wilts. Tip into a colander and allow to drain. 3. Place the kale and spinach in the bottom of a small roasting tray, spoon over the passata sauce. Crack the eggs over the passata sauce and season each one with salt and pepper. 4. Scatter the avocado over the top of the eggs, then sprinkle over the Parmesan cheese. 5. Bake in the oven for 12 minutes or until the whites of the eggs are cooked through. Serve. Cooking for Fitness by James Haskell and Omar Meziane is out now, priced £19.95 (Haskell Publishing)

If you’re at all vegan-curious, this is the time to give it a whirl – in recent years January has even been given its own vegan-based moniker (though we really, really hate it, so please don’t make us say it). With the number of vegans in the UK tripling in the 10 years from 2006, restaurateurs in the Capital have had to stand up and take notice, and even the most red-blooded of burger restaurants are starting to make concessions on their menus. Our favourite city now has one of the most eclectic vegan foodie scenes in the world, and it’s growing day by day. Don’t believe us? Perhaps blogger Serena Lees will persuade you. She founded Vegans of LDN in 2014 as a resource to share the best and most vegan-friendly places to eat and drink around London, and she’s just written her first book – a gorgeous guidebook to help you to navigate the best vegan-friendly establishments for every budget and for any occasion. It’s time to get stuck in. £9.99, quartoknows.com
When I was a child I wanted to be… a WWF wrestler in a tag team with my cousin, to my parents’ dismay! The first thing I cooked was… spaghetti Bolognese with my mum after school. When I feel down I cook… something that takes a while, like a stew, so I can mull whilst stirring aimlessly. It’s soothing. My last meal on earth would be… Sunday roast. I love rare roast beef with all the trimmings and lots of gravy. My kitchen heroes are… Keith Floyd and Rick Stein, they share my ethos of ‘simple is best’. I could watch some of their older TV reruns all day. My fail-safe dinner party menu is… anything goes. Probably some kind of slow cooked meat, presented in a serve yourself fashion and always finished with a huge pavlova. My favourite London restaurant is… Dumplings’ Legend in Chinatown. I go every Sunday, on my day off, with my partner Rufus. Each visit we try and order something we haven’t ordered before, the menu is vast! My ultimate London day consists of… a huge fry up in a proper caff, a pub lunch and then a wander round Soho, taking pit stops for mulled wine and dessert. heep-speckled, gorse-covered headland gives way to rocky cliffs that appear to tumble down into the foaming sea; we wanted remote and this appears to tick all the boxes. Clinging to the cliff edge, the Gara Rock must boast one of the best views in Devon; the hotel is set on the most southerly headland in the county, at an old lookout point on the site of nineteenth century coastguards’ cottages. With views from the headland of Prawle Point and beyond the Salcombe Estuary to Bolt Tail, it is definitely not just the buffeting winds up here that take our breath away. Inside, we are welcomed in the lounge area, where floor-to-ceiling windows ensure that the view takes centre stage. Indeed, everything about the design seems to connect the space to its surroundings, from the rough sisal carpets and unfinished wooden panelling, to the brass ship lights, rope handrails and potted coastal plants. It goes without saying that there’s a palette of blues, greens and greys, but they are tempered against neutral earthy tones, with bursts of warm yellows and oranges. Velvet sofas and armchairs are draped with sheepskins. It’s a bit raw, a bit industrial,
a bit Scandi, but overwhelmingly homely. Up in our room, a coveted corner position affords views from east to west through the many low-set, slanting roof lights, and a sheltered terrace with loungers provides the ultimate spot to stop and stare. We have our own comfortable linen sofa (set below those skylights for optimal stargazing opportunities), a log burning stove, a vast bed situated in a prime spot in front of the terrace doors and, best of all, a standalone roll-top bathtub in the middle of the room. Even the bathroom is stunning, with handpainted encaustic tiles, a Crittall-style shower enclosure and stylish brass fittings.
We tear ourselves away and head for the coast path, stumbling down the path to the beach below, then scrambling back up and striding eastwards in the direction of Langerstone Point. The landscape is wild and beautiful, climbing past cairns and through the stone walls of ancient fields. And always, to our right, the heart thumping drop to the rocky coves below. We breathe in the views and the salty sea air: it is exhilarating and magical, but with the daylight beginning to dim, we head back to the hotel and the lure of the spa. There we swim leisurely laps in the deep blue-tiled pool before soaking our walk-weary legs in the steaming hot tub, all the time gazing out to sea, mesmerised, as the sun sinks below the horizon. There’s a relaxed vibe in the restaurant, where chef Lewis Glanvill has created a sustainable and seasonal menu. Everything is cooked using ingredients from the hotel’s own kitchen garden and carefully selected local producers, farmers and fishermen, while the wine list features bio-dynamic, organic and natural wines. Happily replete, we briefly consider heading downstairs to the cosy cinema room to chill out in front of a film, but instead we decide to grab a nightcap from the bar, and take it up to our room. There we light the log burner, run the bath and settle in for some serious stargazing. Far away from civilisation, the night sky here is as sensational as Devon’s newest hip hotel. fabricmagazine.co.uk

Interiors news Floored by design Charlotte Lancelot plays with the nuances of colour in her luxe collection of rugs for GAN, launching this January. Canevas Geo explores what happens when different shades are superimposed and the weave intermixed: the effect recalls pretty plains of crop fields as seen from the air. In a contemporary twist, these traditionally handcrafted rugs come in asymmetrical shapes, perfect for a stand-alone statement, but even better when two contrasting rugs are interlocked. £2,220 from Woven (020 3176 8993; woven.co.uk)

Sustainable lighting brand NOVE, whose mantra is to bring the beauty of nature into the light, has added four new statement pieces to their collection. Fusing contemporary silhouettes with the natural patina of cork, the table lights come in a choice of two designs, available in either marbled or blackened cork finishes. You’ll want to covet them all.
Great design should be in the everyday and there’s nothing more everyday than the humble kettle. Michele De Lucchi’s new Plissé kettle for Alessi is inspired by the simplicity of folded paper and cleverly creates textured light and shade in its matte thermoplastic resin. In stark and uninterrupted black or white, the monochrome allows its sculptural form to shine. A true design lover’s cup of tea.

Back to the wall The use of traditional craftsmanship in a time of huge technological advances is reassuringly lovely, and that’s no more apparent than in the world of luxury surfaces. From encaustic and hand-painted tiles, to reimagined mosaics, there’s a whole lot of history to delve into by Ali Howard

INTERIORS
IN WITH THE OLD Encaustic tiles are enjoying a renaissance, bringing a time-honoured craft to contemporary settings. Indigenous, whose focus is natural, handmade products, offers a range of encaustic tiles inspired by the “enduring influence of many rich genres and traditions.” Made by hand with traditional frames and moulds, a mix including natural marble powder, cement and coloured pigment is inlaid to create vibrant patterns that go deeper than the surface glaze. Motifs from classic Arabic geometry, Spanish and Moorish influences, up to modernist monochrome designs all feature, but it is the colourful patchwork selection that really showcases this late medieval innovation in a thoroughly modern way. From £108 per sq m (indigenous.co.uk) HEAVY METAL Fameed Khalique, whose eponymous brand offers a range of super-luxe wall and floor tiles, is no stranger to experimental surfaces. Intricately textured and beautifully tactile, the studio’s collection of aluminium and copper products explores the timeless beauty of raw materials. Lotus, from the DXU collection, is an ornate, embossed design inspired by the heavily symbolic lotus flower of the East. Its three-dimensional texture invites light to bounce off it, creating shadows and bringing the surface to life. Where traditional craftsmanship meets innovative design, here, an ultra-chic aesthetic has been created from humble recyclable materials. £83 per tile (fameedkhalique.com)
NEW EUROPEAN Lapicida is a brand that prides itself on bringing traditional craftsmanship to the luxury market. The new Mediterranean collection takes its design cue from vintage tiling across the continent, the kind you see in dusty churches and rustic kitchens, romantically aged and all the more beautiful for it. Created to complement each other, the six variations share a laid-back colour palette ranging from traditional blue and white to decorative terracotta tones. The designs are interpreted onto newgeneration ceramics, which are tough, hard-wearing and easy to maintain, so whether laid on floors or walls, they’ll withstand our 21st century demands. £58.80 per sq m (lapicida.com) FOR MODERN MERMAIDS The clue’s in the name: Otto Tiles & Design throws back to the elaborate Ottoman art of the 16th century. But it’s not just the aesthetic that’s borrowed from yesteryear. Age-old techniques combine with the latest technology to create a collection that boasts both authenticity and contemporary sass. Their Fish Scale range offers luxurious surface textures in a glamour-filled palette from jewel colours to arabesque pink to warming bronze, echoing, too, the decadence of Art Deco. Delicately hand-painted and later glazed, these eyecatching ceramic scales find their natural home in the most opulent of bathrooms. £1.80 ex VAT per tile, minimum order 1 sq m/ approx 67 tiles (ottotiles.co.uk) STORMY SKIES Original Style have chosen Midnight Blue as their tile of 2019, encouraging us to embrace the darkness with its sultry navy tones and soft metallic sheen. Measuring an impressive 1200 x 600mm, its large-scale format adds to its sense of drama, but it’s the subtle tonal variations in the glazed porcelain that reminds us of its artisanal roots: like a bruised inky sky, flashes of lilac and gunmetal blue peek through, adding visual texture and ensuring each oversized rectangle is uniquely different to the next. But machine rectified to sharp precision, these stylish tiles offer clean lines that are anything but handmade. £59.95 per sq m (originalstyle.com) fabricmagazine.co.uk

INTERIOR DESIGNER

hen your job is to create the ultimate dream home for clients, you’re going to be most meticulous designing your own abode, even if that means going back to the drawing board – quite literally – and rearranging the blueprint. That’s exactly what Louise did in her west London townhouse with an original floorplan that couldn’t quite accommodate her creative vision. Finding herself in a conservation area proved a challenge, but it was, nonetheless, a workable one. “As the works commenced it was only the façade that remained untouched,” she says. “The house already had an existing basement kitchen and dining space, but it was missing a cosy snug to which I could retreat.” To create such a space, Louise needed to increase
the property’s footprint, while higher ceilings were achieved by digging down, and back. The project was undoubtedly an ambitious undertaking, spanning the best part of two years and including major renovations, but it’s one that Louise has pulled off with aplomb – testament not only to her interior design finesse, but her sharp architectural eye, too. The property, filled as it is with luxurious textiles and gilded house jewels, oozes glamour. Every corner has been thoughtfully designed with just the right occasional table, contemporary painting or objet d’art in place. It has an uncanny ability to be simultaneously grand and cosy, too, with commodious, light-loving open-plan areas as well as enclosed and intimate spaces, giving Louise and her miniature dachshunds, Bebe and Ellie, the best of both worlds.

There’s a narrative that runs from dining space, to kitchen, to snug, seamlessly. It is indeed a triumph of design. “It’s perfect for entertaining and then retreating to the snug and unwinding in front of the fireplace,” Louise enthuses. “And whilst it’s a basement space, I brought natural light and nature to it with a lightwell in the snug area featuring a much-loved camellia tree. I can use the snug all year round and it gives me a very welcome connection to nature.” The natural theme is evident throughout the townhouse with Louise’s expert layering of a neutral palette. Opulent beige and cream fabrics work harmoniously with the patina of natural wood and stone, while subtle touches of bronze and gold offer an inviting warmth. A stunning centrepiece chandelier borrows from nature, too, with its bare wintry branches

and glass stalactites dazzling in the sunlight. “I love muted, tranquil colour palettes and carefully layered materials, textures and shapes,” says Louise. Often people think a neutral palette isn’t adventurous, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s perfect for creating homes which feel full of light, air, warmth and energy.” Describing her style as “relaxed luxury,” Louise talks of dressing a property much like a fashion designer would, finishing off an outfit with the perfect accessory. “It is fascinating how something as simple as a vase, a lamp, or a selection of cushions can completely change the look and feel of an interior,” she says. “I have some wonderful one-off pieces that I stumbled across in flea markets in Paris and some exquisite souvenirs bought whilst travelling – they

evoke memories every time I look at them.” The whole property is sanctuary-like, exuding both opulence and serenity the moment you step inside. But it is Louise’s master bedroom that offers the ultimate in laid-back luxury: “The bespoke joinery was designed to hold my capsule wardrobe,” she explains. “The mirrored door conceals the en suite bathroom for which I used a beautiful Calacatta marble. I also found, after years of searching, a cashmere throw that fits perfectly on a king size bed. It is specially woven, seamless and organic, and it’s my absolute favourite. I added the full range of the throws to our showroom collection and they quickly became bestsellers. Who doesn’t love to snuggle up in a fine cashmere throw in the winter months?” (louisebradley.co.uk)

Area guide St. John’s Wood While it might be synonymous with the famous Abbey Road Studios and Lord’s cricket ground, St. John’s Wood’s appeal isn’t limited to cricket fans and Beatles maniacs. Spreading out from the north western reaches of Regent’s Park, a brisk stroll (or two short tube stops) from the centre of London, the area has long been one of the Capital’s grandest villages. A diverse and well-connected community, excellent schools (including the well-respected American School) and a smart, thriving high street of independent boutiques and acclaimed eateries add to the appeal of excellent housing stock. Though the area is best known for its elegant semi-detached villas, buyers can also choose from an eclectic mix of Regency homes, Victorian terraces, large detached properties and blocks of portered mansion flats, while fans of modernist architecture will love the duplexes on the Alexandra and Ainsworth Estate, designed by Neave Brown in the seventies. That there is plenty to choose from isn’t in question, but you’ll need deep pockets to claim your own slice of St. John’s Wood, as the homes in this affluent enclave are amongst the most expensive in London Photography by Kathy Anne Lim
Did you know? A family called the Eyres bought St. John’s Wood from the Crown in the early eighteenth century, but development didn’t really begin until the middle of the nineteenth century. They favoured the semi-detached villa, a groundbreaking architectural style at the time, setting St. John’s Wood apart from the rest of the Capital.
The design quickly became popular, and was copied elsewhere. Architectural writer Sir John Summerson wrote: “It was the first part of London, and indeed of any other town, to abandon the terrace house for the semi-detached villa – a revolution of striking significance and far-reaching effect.” fabricmagazine.co.uk

THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK
Carla Pozner Osteopath I was lucky enough to grow up in leafy St. John’s Wood and I have now returned as my practice is based here. There are so many great places, but there are particular gems that help get me through my day… Fuel café on Boundary Road is where I head to recharge: their freshly squeezed juices get me ready for the day. Walking my dog, Florence, is a great way to clear my head. There’s so much to see; I particularly love admiring the beautiful villas and tree-lined streets. Every six weeks we head to Hairy Hounds for a grooming session – the owners are clearly dog whisperers. Coffee and sourdough toast at The Clifton pub is my treat. It’s tucked away on pretty Clifton Hill and is owned by two good friends, the Robson brothers. Their quiz night is great, too. I love to take my toddler son to the Violet Hill playground. It holds special memories as I used to go there as a child. We bought my son’s first pair of shoes at Grizzly Kids, where they stock a fantastic selection of footwear and toys. It’s also a children’s hairdressers where they make haircuts fun. Morso restaurant is a new addition to the area; they serve delicious fresh pasta – another one of my weaknesses – and it is the perfect spot for a casual after work get together. When it’s time to pamper myself I’ll head to Shakti Veda for an Indian head massage or an Ayurvedic treatment. Total bliss. CP Holistic, 25 Springfield Road, NW8 (07968 701665; cpholistic.com)

Local heroes HARRY MORGAN, NW8 Harry’s, as it’s affectionately known by locals, is a New York style deli/restaurant that’s been serving up traditional home cooked fare for an incredible 70 years. Offering breakfast, lunch and supper, as well as delectable deli take-outs, Harry’s is all about stateside soul food: think meatloaf and mash, salt beef bagels, American pancake stacks with maple syrup… “This signature SJW restaurant does the best chicken soup in London,” says Josh Marks from Knight Frank. “Perfect for this time of the year!” 29-31 St. John’s Wood High Street, NW8 (020 7722 1869; harryms.co.uk)
“Around half of our buyers are upsizing – usually families who need more space and want to continue to school their children locally. Families often move into their forever home here. When you have all St. John’s Wood has to offer on your doorstep, it’s hard to leave” Stephen Lindsay, Savills
FORA, NW8 With a lavish Ottoman Empire styled interior you can fully expect authentic Turkish food, and this buzzy St. John’s Wood eatery doesn’t disappoint. Traditional home-cooked faves include the rude-not-to moussaka, flatbread and pide dishes, finger-licking chargrill bites, and of course, delicious sharing platters. But for local resident Hannah Herschel, it’s the vegetarian choice that really impresses at Fora. “There’s plenty of substantial dishes on offer for veggies, and the halloumi kebab, served with rice and salad, is an absolute must.” 11 Circus Road, NW8 (020 7586 9889; forarestaurants.co.uk) PANZER’S, NW8 This much-loved deli and grocers is “a St. John’s Wood institution,” according to Aston Chase’s Mark Pollack. SCHOOLS
FABRIC PROMOTION
TIME FOR CHANGE In the midst of a teenage mental health epidemic, with today’s teens under more pressure than ever before, the high-achieving North Bridge House Senior Schools in north London are taking a forward-thinking approach to promoting pupil wellbeing Prioritising students’ wellbeing from the outset, sister schools, North Bridge House Senior Canonbury and North Bridge House Senior Hampstead, work hard to address the many issues that have been brought to light surrounding young people’s mental health, from their conflicting sleep patterns to exam stress. Having worked with teen sleep expert and neuroscientist Dr Paul Kelley from the University of Oxford, both senior schools have implemented a later start time for students. “All students start school later on Wednesday: half way through the week when they will be feeling the effects of their unsociable body clock, which is two hours behind that of a fully developed adult’s, making them less receptive to early morning learning,” says NBH Senior Hampstead Head, Brendan Pavey. NBH also focuses on enhancing the wellbeing of its
students through a timetabled enrichment programme, which is “an exceptional aspect of the curriculum” (SIS, 2015), and allows students to find an outlet or interest in activities ranging from philosophy and creative writing, to self-defence, mindfulness and yoga. NBH has advanced support systems in place to further tackle key periods of stress for students. They teach revision methods devised around research into the impact of distraction on working memory, undertaken with the University of York, as well as offering individual Oxbridge mentoring and extensive UCAS support for Sixth Form students. As part of their ongoing commitment towards their students’ wellbeing, the two senior schools are also hosting established author and mental health campaigner Hope Virgo this month. While teens today grow up in a culture where
mental health is discussed much more openly than in previous years, there is still a gap in understanding between the generations. Hope’s talk is an opportunity for NBH parents to understand more about her own experience of mental health illness and to learn how to best support their children. “It is important that we harness expert advice in supporting our students’ personal needs and growth, to in turn progress their academic achievement,” says NBH Senior Canonbury and NBH Collegiate Head, Jonathan Taylor. NBH has previously seen mental health champion Jonny Benjamin and leading social neuroscientist of adolescent development Professor Blakemore inform the school’s pupil support programme and parents too, while The RAP Project have supported on the threats of social media, ‘sexting’ and body image.
Both NBH Senior Canonbury and NBH Senior Hampstead’s ‘outstanding’ pastoral systems are at the heart of school life, with regular meetings between heads of year, form tutors and the pastoral deputy, ensuring that all students are identified with on an individual basis. This is supplemented by a professional counsellor, who students can request to meet with confidentially every week. “The key to us understanding teens and identifying with their adolescent needs in our teaching and learning methods really boils down to the fact that our academic, pastoral and extra-curricular provisions are not standalone concepts, but equally vital components in the overall mix,” concludes NBH Senior Canonbury Headteacher, Jonathan Taylor. Private investigators Digital technology isn’t only changing the way we live and work; it’s changing the way children learn, too. And schools are adapting. “In recent years there’s been a significant shift away from content-rich learning,” says Mark English, deputy head (academic) at UCS Hampstead. “Now, the focus is on promoting the crucial skills pupils will need to adapt to technological change – like critical thinking, flexibility and collaboration.” Many schools have turned to collaborative online platforms and methods like ‘flipped learning’ to support this shift. But some leading independent schools have taken a more dramatic step. In 2018, UCS opened its AKO Centre, a library-type space designed to suit today’s learning needs and encourage innovation in teaching. Wellington College and Reigate Grammar have similar centres. “The AKO project gave us the opportunity to develop our work in educational research,” says Mark. “And we appointed one of our geography teachers, Emma, to lead on it as our first UCS Research Fellow.” In her first year in the role, Emma collaborated with the Institute of Education to train 10 or so UCS teachers in how to carry out research in schools. That group has become a Teachers’ Research Group, with each member running projects that’ll inform the school’s future thinking on curriculum. Emma has also presented the research results to partnership state schools. So what’s in the research pipeline for 2019? “One area of interest will be combinational creativity – how to help our pupils make links between subjects that have no apparent, or only superficial, areas of contact,” says Mark. “We’re also keen to develop their research, particularly among our younger pupils. The AKO Centre will help us with both.” Mark also has some advice for parents who want to help their children to learn in a digital world. “Don’t be hoodwinked by technology,” he says. “Ineffective or inefficient use of devices can mask mediocre teaching and learning. And speak to your children about how they learn rather than what they learn. A self-aware learner is an effective learner – and this will be increasingly important in the future.” (ucs.org.uk)

THE HEAD
Alastair Gloag Saint Christina’s School
What attracted you to the school? People say that Saint Christina’s is a very special place. It is! The children achieve some of the best academic outcomes that you’ll find. But the commitment the school has to developing the ‘whole child’ means that they’re also really happy, balanced and grounded. What makes the school different? The warmth and depth of loyalty that the strong sense of community engenders; the level of specialist teaching; the staff’s openness to innovation;
and the approach to learning that engages the pupils actively in understanding their performance. How would you describe the atmosphere? Very warm, welcoming and supportive. The staff are amazing: they’re friendly and will drop everything to meet parents and support their pupils and colleagues. The children are well-behaved and have taken ownership of the school’s Christian values.
What about your personal educational ethos? As a nation, we’ve routinely turned our children into a set of statistics in league tables. We forget that they’re all people, with their own characters and personalities, hopes, dreams and potential. It’s our role as parents and teachers to make sure we look after, challenge, encourage, nurture and inspire every child so they can be their very best. 25 St. Edmund’s Terrace, NW8 (020 7722 8784; saintchristinas.org.uk)

Ask the Agents When it comes to 2019 property predictions we might just be asking the impossible, given current levels of economic volatility (not to mention the dreaded B-word), but for want of a crystal ball, there’s always advice to be had from our expert agents. Here, Glentree’s Trevor Abrahmsohn weighs in with some sound sales advice to see us through the months ahead, while Chestertons’ Richard Davies gives us his take on the movers and shakers in the Capital’s rental market... “The market up to £1million will be reasonably liquid during 2019, provided Help to Buy continues its good work,” advises Trevor. “I imagine there will be sideways movement, with little growth, apart from pockets where there’s a shortage of supply. The middle market, £1 to 3 million, is fairly balanced with a shortage of cash buyers and properties available. I would not be surprised if there’s zero growth in values, or a modest up-take, but I don’t see retrenchment in values from this point. And in the £5 million plus market, a significant number of buyers are dependent on the currency exchange and are not affected by the machinations of Brexit.” According to Richard, “Investing in the London market is still a very attractive proposition for professional landlords, with low interest rates (which are likely to continue) and higher rental returns. Looking at a longer forecast, the supply and demand imbalance should be largely corrected by the rapidly expanding build-to-rent sector. Against this backdrop we are expecting to see a modest rental uplift this year of 2.5 per cent in the Capital and 2 per cent in Prime central London. We forecast that by 2022 we will see a total growth of 11.5 per cent in rents throughout London.” 74

Favourite place? NW8’s Oslo Court Restaurant: good food and impeccable service in a setting that’s stood for the last 30 years. Favourite place to grab a coffee? GAIL’s Bakery. Trevor Abrahmsohn
Where do you go for head space in the city? To the top of Primrose Hill. Period property or new-build? Period. Take one person, dead, alive or fictional, out in London – who and where? I would take Elvis Presley to the top of The Shard.
Richard Davies
Aliens attack – which London landmark would you save? Emirates Stadium. The one home luxury I can’t live without is... my dressing gown.
