22 January Subterania In one of just three UK performances before he heads to mainland Europe, then on to India, legendary bluesman Keb’ Mo’ will grace this Portobello music venue – one that’s no stranger to the greats. Known as the “modern master of American roots music” the singer, guitarist and songwriter presents a set filled with musical treats that are both deeply expressive and highly personal. “When you are in a certain part of your life, the concept of an album is woven into the process,” he says of 2019’s Oklahoma. Fresh from our cover shoot, north London actress Brittany Ashworth’s enthusiasm is infectious. “I had the best time,” she grins. “I loved the theme – the volume and drama of it; so cool. It was a really talented team, so it was a lovely way to spend a morning. It’s always a bit strange when you wrap one of those, because you go out in the afternoon and you’re like, well, I feel like I need to do something really brilliant now that I’ve got my make up done, but usually you just go home and work…” Work is what Brittany is here to talk about. She has been acting since the age of seven or eight, when she started attending David Johnson’s Oldham Theatre Workshop and began to get offered parts in touring productions. “I got to be in Les Mis, and Little Princess, which is obviously the most magical, fantastic thing ever when you are really little. I think it is quite a cruel thing to do to a child, to let them do that, because where do you go from that?” she laughs.

Where she did go was British television, with appearances in shows like Sons and Lovers and Mobile, after which Brittany was offered a part in the critically acclaimed Mrs. Ratcliffe’s Revolution, which went on to win the Audience Award at the Würzburg International Film Weekend. Brittany has since worked on The Crucifixion, Accident Man, and Amazon Prime’s post-apocalyptic love story, Hostile. The latter was a two hander opposite Grégory Fitoussi – “he is a very well respected French actor,” Brittany tells me, “so it was a real privilege to work so closely and freely with him.” The film, which premiered at Sitges and won 20 awards on the festival circuit, was fascinating to work on. “The preparation process was two weeks of improvisation in Paris with Grégory, then a week of training with the GIGN in France,” Brittany explains. “I learnt how to shoot and throw grenades at the police range in Versailles; to knife fight with an ex-op, and I had psychological

training which involved crawling in tiny tunnels deep underground.” Next up, a part in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen, out later this month. She describes it as: “a real classic Guy Ritchie film. Really funny, really pacy, with all the gangster, cockney stuff you’d expect,” adding, “I have always loved his films. It is just super exciting to be part of it.” It goes without saying that Guy Ritchie’s isn’t the only big name attached to the project. “It has got a real ensemble, stellar cast,” Brittany tells me. “Matthew McConaughey, Hugh Grant, Henry Golding, and some really fearsome women, too – Lyne Renée… And I was quite lucky actually because I got to work with Kate Beckinsale. You know, she was on the shoot for two weeks and then they reshot some of her scenes with Michelle Dockery, and they are both incredible women to work with.” I wonder if Brittany felt star-struck. “I think that it is all quite context bound,” she muses.
“I once met Cate Blanchett on a train – she just gets regular coach class trains to Kent – and I sat opposite her for the entire journey thinking: Cate Blanchett! Cate Blanchett! Of course I didn’t want to encroach on her space, but when I got to my stop, I heard myself saying to her: ‘Oh my God, you are my favourite actress, you are one of the reasons I wanted to be an actress.’ And I got off and I thought, why did I do that, it’s so uncool!” Work though, is different, Brittany concludes. “I think when you are at work, you have to realise that you are there for a reason, you have been chosen to do the job just like everybody else,” she shrugs. Brittany tells the story of one of her first encounters with Hugh Grant on the job. “He comes out from doing this scene and he’s all bumbly and lovely – exactly what you expect from Hugh Grant – and he goes, ‘Oh my God, I think I really fucked that up, he’s going to fire me,’” she laughs. “Of course, he hadn’t – he was
amazing. But just to see that people like that are nervous, it’s like, uh, ok, it’s going to be fine.” Having worked on both big budget films – from producers like Miramax, Warp and Warner Bros – and independent films, Brittany explains how different the experience can be. “There is so much money involved that everything is very precise, so you know in the morning exactly what is going to be shot,” she explains. “It has already been blocked out, you know exactly where the cameras are going to be, and you just step on. Whereas some of the other film projects I’ve done – some of them have been partially improvised, some of them have been adhoc indie films where you’ll arrive and find that there is a problem with something that they had anticipated being able to do… It can be totally unexpected, which can be great because you can play with it and see where it goes.” And then there’s location: The Gentlemen was filmed in London, which meant staying at

“I REALLY FEEL THAT LONDON IS ONE OF THE RICHEST CITIES ON EARTH IN TERMS OF CULTURE” home – though that’s not always a good thing, Brittany believes. “I think being away from home can really help with the immersive aspect of transforming into a different person. So, when I did The Crucifixion, which was set in Romania and about Romanian characters, the second I arrived on set for that I was able to remove myself. You don’t have that level of removal of being like, right, I’ve got to go home later and do my washing, then my friends want to hang out. You can totally separate from all of that.” Her next project will offer that sense of separation. “I’m flying out next week to Serbia to shoot a climbing film, which should be good fun,” she grins. “I am doing lots of active prep on that now, because I am playing a professional climber.” Does she feel confident being able to portray that? “I’ve climbed for fun for quite a while because my brother is really into it,” she explains, “and it’s quite a social thing to do. There are some really good places to do it in London: I think my favourite has to be The Castle. In fact, last time I

was there, Khal Drogo from Game of Thrones was there. And he can climb!” she laughs. In terms of future work, Brittany is also working on her own screenplay – an opportunity for her to use some of her other skills. “I have a short film that I am making in January that I have quite a cool cast attached to. It’s just a way for me to be able to sit in the library writing all day really!” she laughs. “It’s about stopping places within the traveller community, as seen through the eyes of two young children.” Brittany is also keeping her fingers and toes crossed that a project she has been involved in gets the funding to go ahead. “I really hope it gets green lit – it’s in pre production. It’s about the war photographer Gerda Taro, who was the first female photojournalist to die on the front line. And she is just the coolest character,” she tells me. “She was Jewish and fled Germany to move to Paris in 1933, where she met Robert Capa in a park. He began to take pictures of her, and she thought, well actually, I’ve got a bit more to me
than this. So he teaches her to use the camera, and miles and miles away from home, she realises that how she can make a difference in the war effort is to document everything she sees around her.” Photography is close to Brittany’s own heart. “I really feel that London is the richest city on earth in terms of culture. I go to visit one or two exhibitions a week. I’m really excited about the Dora Maar one that is on at the Tate Modern. I take quite a lot of pictures, too – I have got a really nice new camera as a present,” she says. “And I love that you can just step into a crowd and see things that you might never have seen. Like people’s faces… I think that you can get quite fatigued by the number of people, and stop seeing things, so it is nice to step away from that. And it is just good to be on the other side of the camera – I think that with what I do, the more you understand what other people’s jobs are, the better you can be at your job.” It certainly seems to be a strategy that is paying off.

Elleven Dental I’m always amazed how much money we are prepared to spend on clothes, hair and other such indulgences in the pursuit of looking and feeling better, and comparatively, how little we spend when it comes to our teeth. A routine examination is performed, and detailed photos taken, in order to formulate the optimal treatment plan, completely bespoke to my needs, my facial structure and health. Afterwards, we sit down together at the computer and I get to view my teeth as I’ve never seen them before. I’m horrified to discover that I have an early case of dental erosion and a misaligned jaw, but Dr Patel, ever reassuring, advises me that nothing is beyond fixing and that there is an option to try a straightening treatment should I wish to consider it (I definitely do!). The whole consultation takes about one hour, and I leave feeling positive in the knowledge that my teeth are in safe, expert hands. Kitchen at Holmes I’ve not yet been to the restaurant at the Holmes Hotel on Baker Street, but I’ve only heard good things, so when a friend suggests that it might be a good spot for lunch during a day of shopping, I jump at the chance to sample it. Inside the fire is blazing and the welcome is warm. The décor is classically modern, with herringbone floors, wood panelling and modern artwork on the walls; it feels very much like being in somebody’s – albeit Insta-perfect – home. I’m particularly taken with the open kitchen, which feels very domestic with its shaker-style units, and boasts a vast central island – the type I dream of installing in my own kitchen. In the mood to celebrate, we opt for a couple of cocktails to open proceedings. Sherlock’s Pipe combines whisky and negroni in a showstopping concoction that is presented in a pipe-shaped glass and delivered in a dramatic cloud of Applewood-scented smoke; while KT Time mixes hibiscus and elderflower with Beefeater gin, and is served from a teapot. If the team are going to make any allusions to Baker Street’s most famous fictional residents, this is surely the classiest way to do it. As we sip and peruse the menu, we

It hits all the right notes and lifts any mood, as well as fully reviving me.
tuck into crispy tempura aubergine, dinky mouthfuls of jamon Ibérico croquettes and divinely fluffy warm pita smothered in tahini. Head chef Stefano Motta’s career has taken him across the globe, working in top restaurants in Italy, New York and London, and the seasonal menu is influenced by his travels, with an emphasis on ingredient provenance. After the indulgence of the silly season, we’re after something light and fresh, and Stefano delivers. Wasabi and ponzu give the yellow fin tuna tartare a delightful zing, and we fight over the last of the wafer thin
and utterly delicious red prawn carpaccio. Afterwards, we share two salads: king crab and avocado, and roasted pumpkin and beetroot. The weather outside may be bitter, but these colourful and hearty bowls fill us with the joys of spring. There’s only so much virtue to go around, though, so we push the boat out with pud, opting for the chocolate and orange fiesta: a true party on a plate. METHOD 1. Measure 100ml of water into a pan and add the caster sugar. Turn on the heat and stir until the sugar is fully dissolved and the mixture is starting to simmer. 2. Break the cardamom pods down by covering them in a clean tea towel and bashing them with a rolling pin or similar. Pour your broken pods into the warm sugar syrup in the pan and turn off the heat. 3. Cover the pan and leave until cooled completely. 4. While the syrup is cooling, juice the apples using a home juicer, or blend to a pulp in a smoothie maker. 5. Next, squeeze the lime into the apple juice.

THE SPIRIT OF CORSICA
Enigmatic, alluring and ruggedly beautiful, Corsica might just be the Med’s best kept secret by Katie Hutley
A
s excitement levels build in the runup to our trip, evenings are spent obsessively researching the island of Corsica, hoping to absorb, as if by osmosis, something of the spirit of the place before we have so much as left for the airport. And yet, she remains (as one might claim of all the classiest French ladies) something of an enigma. Sure, the history – an inviting French/ Italian heritage, the birthplace of Napoleon – is readily available, and the images we pore over show a Mediterranean idyll to rival any other. But, like it or not, we are going to have to wait to be properly introduced before getting under the skin of the place, and so we vow that this will be a holiday with exploration and discovery at the top of our list. As every explorer knows, getting base camp right is the first step on the path to adventure. Simpson Travel, whose portfolio now takes in six countries, and only the best destinations within them, are our first port of call. Intrepid as we may intend to be, having the requisite home comforts is never less than a must, especially when travelling with a family. They suggest we base ourselves at Alto di Pinarello,

a charming apartment complex in the southeast of the island that is part of the acclaimed Simpson Kids programme. The village of Pinarello, with its cluster of beach front restaurants, lies just a 10 minute stroll away, with the loftier sophistication of Porto-Vecchio – perfect for people-watching while aperitifsipping – is within a 30 minute drive, all set along a coast abundant in beaches and coves of azure waters and shaded by pine trees. And so, with a wealth of other day trip suggestions both cultural and geographical in our clutches, we set off. Of course, as any family knows, children, and toddlers especially, laugh in the face of the best-laid plans, and so it is that we find ourselves more or less housebound for the first few days, beset by a lurgy that puts paid to our dreams of following the path less travelled. It does, however, entirely vindicate our decision to opt for self-catering; not only have we settled in to our ‘home from home’ more or less instantly, with its well thought out provision of everything we might need, the apartment itself is spacious and stylish, with a well-stocked book- and DVD-library. We take it

in turns to take a break, lolloping around in the welcome relief of the pool area, and thanks to a kindly local doctor, and some weapons-grade antibiotics, we are soon up and running again. And so, finally, we get to meet her. Having spent the first couple of evenings gazing enviously out at the sun setting over the craggy ranges visible from our capacious terrace, we are itching to get on the road and see them for ourselves. We immediately break our own holiday rule of not doing the same thing twice when, on our Simpson rep’s recommendation, we make the trip high up into them there hills to visit the rock pools of the Cavu river. With temperatures soaring, the cool emerald depths that await us are more than worth the uphill voyage to get there; vast flat rocks lead out onto pools just perfect for swimming in, ridiculously picturesque when punctuated at intervals by waterfalls of varying heights and surrounded by towering pine forests. River swimming is a new venture for me, if not for my more outdoors-y other half, and I am hooked. Of course, this doesn’t mean I am by now above your more common-or-garden beach swimming – far from it, in fact, when the beaches are of this calibre. Palombaggia beach, just a 15 minute drive from our complex, is prized for its pristine white sands and crystal clear waters, and provides those essential #nofilter pictures to really annoy the folks back home – it really is as stunning in real life as the images (which we’d assumed to be somewhat tweaked) we’d been drooling over back in Blighty. And although Palombaggia is the most well-known, we find equally droolworthy spots at every turn, discovered by taking the road less travelled and seeing what is at the end of it. Naturally, in a cultural hotspot like Corsica, there is land-based exploring to be covered as well. Our favourite is a boat trip skirting around the fringe of Bonifacio’s old town, teetering on a cliff ’s edge, then taking the quaint tourist train up its winding, narrow streets to the top, where we pick our way through the maze of cobbled streets, getting gloriously lost and picking up a few souvenirs along the way. We stand at the top of the King of Aragon’s Stairway, with its 187 steps which, according to legend, were carved by hand overnight by the King’s troops, back in

1420 – and while the prospect of descending them is appealing, the prospect of a seriously delectable local ice cream proves even more so. Maybe next time. It turns out that the enigmatic ‘thing’ about Corsica, which had made it so indefinable from afar, is the way it manages to mix the best elements of so many European holidays. The majestic, wild scenery of our favourite Mediterranean islands; the superior roads and classy supermarchés so beloved of our French trips; the cultural depth and breadth borne of its Italian heritage; and a local cuisine both totally unique, yet cherry-picking the best elements of its Franco-Italian parents. So, despite an inauspicious start, we are totally beguiled by this mystery woman who – as do all the best of her kind – contains multitudes. HEAD FOR THE VALLEYS Impeccable service, exquisite dining, sumptuous suites and views to die for are all part of the package at Bodysgallen Hall by Penny Clements
I
can’t lie, when I see the weather forecast for our weekend mini break my heart sinks: rain is predicted all day and all night. But from the minute we pull up it is apparent that a little precipitation won’t dampen our spirits. Bodysgallen Hall is reached via a small singletrack road, passing through meadows and the hotel’s 220 acres of parkland; we are greeted by the grandest 16th Century country manor house, its warm stone gothic façade set amid tranquil gardens and against a background of the rugged peaks of Snowdonia. Inside, the lobby feels cosy and intimate: dark oak panelling and heavily draped curtains are complemented with carefully selected antiques, and big comfy sofas huddle around a large crackling fireplace. There can be few better places to hibernate on a rainy, grey afternoon. Other than our room, perhaps.… The classically styled Vaughan Suite is sumptuous. A warm, bright living area boasts vintage furniture, brass light fittings and comfy armchairs, while in the bedroom there is a queen-size four-poster bed, all with views of the perfectly kept garden and parkland areas. There are two bathrooms, complete with fresh robes and luxurious toiletries. Everything feels gloriously romantic and decadent and we are happy to hibernate. Later, we head down to eat at The Dining Room. With its grand fireplace, it is easy to imagine back in the thirteenth century when this space was the main hall of the estate. Now it houses an intimate 3 AA Rosette restaurant. Our table sits pretty by the mullioned window, and a carafe of expertly chosen wine already awaits us, illuminated by flickering candlelight. This is country house hospitality at its very finest. We look out over the pristine gardens, spotting Conwy Castle in the distance. It is the perfect setting to enjoy the traditional but intelligent

menu that has been deliciously created by and cooked under the expert direction of head chef, John Williams. Rooted in a passion for the local area, John’s carefully curated menus are farm-based and plant-inspired, and make use of seasonal produce from the property’s wellestablished walled fruit and vegetable garden. A standout dish among the starters – plump, meaty scallops, roasted and served with garden pea cream and a delicious light squid ink crisp – is a case in point; so too is a balanced main course of halibut, butter poached and accompanied by Bodysgallen’s homegrown onions, yeasted cauliflower and a cream chicken and thyme jus. Desserts pull a similar trick – witness a pretty plate of poached estate rhubarb served with rhubarb parfait and topped with a delicious rhubarb sorbet. It is obvious that the team really do make the most of their garden’s produce. Before retreating to our room, we decide to grab a nightcap from The Clubroom. Here, the bartender mixes the most exquisite infusions, which together with fresh flowers and herbs from the garden, create a cocktail menu that tells a story of the land. We sink deep into the sofas as we explore the various offerings. After an excellent night’s sleep and a pinchme moment of awakening in the beautiful surroundings of our suite, breakfast beckons. We head over to the breakfast room and discover a buffet of fresh fruit, cereals and tempting pastries
alongside a hot à la carte menu, fruit juice, tea, coffee and toast, too. Enviously spying the other guests’ breakfasts, we decide to indulge with a full traditional English breakfast. Presented as exquisitely as last night’s dinner, it does not disappoint; exquisite flavours and jaw dropping views make for the perfect breakfast. Later, we amble over to the spa, enjoying the views and the bracing air on the way. The spa is situated in a cute little cottage at the bottom of the hill. I’m booked in for a full aromatherapy experience treatment, but first up, a quick stop at the gym (an attempt to burn off some of the calories from the past 24 hours). Afterwards, I have time to quickly check out the facilities before my treatment – a steam room, sauna, relaxation room, indoor pool and Jacuzzi complete the offering here. Back in the relaxation room, my therapist Mia joins me and leads me to the treatment room where she explains that the aromatherapy experience will take just under an hour, and promises to transport me to another world. She is right – I leave feeling totally relaxed and utterly blissed out. All in all, it is a memorable weekend, and we can’t help feeling that Bodysgallen Hall is a little slice of Welsh heaven. Boasting impeccable service, beautiful traditional décor, unforgettable views, exquisite dining and comfortable, homely hotel suites, we can’t wait to return.

Can you tell me a bit about the property itself ? It’s a four-bedroom 1900s house designed by the architect Frederick Llewellyn as his own home. Each room has unique features suggesting the architect was experimenting with, and exploring, different styles. For example, the doors all have different veneers and some of the rooms have exposed painted beams, whereas others have more simple coving with the beams giving an Arts and Crafts influence.
What made you fall in love with it? We fell in love with the house because it sits quite high up, surrounded by woods, so it benefits from lots of natural light and green views, even though it is still in London. This is something we have worked to reflect in the interiors throughout the house.
What do you usually look for in a property? Natural light, a garden and
Did you do anything structurally? As this was to be a family home, I wanted to create a space that reflected the function that was understated and elegant, with a restrained palette and a focus on the interior architecture. So far we have undertaken minor works with the plan to do more next year. I have plans for more significant building but this initial phase was to refresh the interiors with light decoration and new furniture.
How have you personalised the space? My style is understated elegance. All of our BradyWilliams projects combine unusual one-off pieces, with layered textures and tones to create properties that are calm and luxurious. My home was no different and the period and location of the house has meant we have probably gone for a more relaxed feel than our previous London homes. As always, we have mixed lots of antiques with mid-century and modern pieces.

Are you a keen collector? Yes, I have a Dunbar ‘Long John’ mid-century bench by Edward Wormley that was one of my first designer antique pieces and it has worked in so many spaces. Other standouts include an antique mahogany side cabinet with ADA Alabaster wall lights above it in the sitting room. The sitting room also features some brilliant 1970s Low Travertine Triangular Coffee Tables, from Pamono.
How important is character in a home? Desperately important. Period features and the heritage of a site are always at the core of our inspiration for BradyWilliams projects, across residential, hospitality and retail clients. We believe in embracing any era but what we do to the interior must be sympathetic.
Which room is your favourite? The master bedroom is a space we truly love. It’s a calming, grown-up space that makes the most of the double aspect windows. Through layering different shades of white, we have created a neutral backdrop to the amazing light that filters through the windows. But the guest bedroom is a space where we were able to have more freedom to experiment and play with bold colours. I love the clash of Paper and Paint Library’s Leather III with the burgundy leather headboard and muted golds of the billowing silk curtains.
Do you have any exciting projects coming up? We have lots on both the residential and hospitality front – 2020 is going to be another busy and exciting year for BradyWilliams! Having just completed our fourth apartment at Floral Court in Covent Garden, we are currently working on some beautiful London family homes and piedà-terres to complete next year. We are also working on our eighth, ninth and tenth projects with Corbin & King, following the successful opening of Soutine this spring. BradyWilliams’ first nightclub design is also launching in 2020 and we are looking to expand our retail portfolio following our redesign of the ground floor of Fenwick a few years ago. bradywilliamsstudio.com

One couple had a long-term plan to build their dream house on the River Thames. But it took some time to find the plot, acquire planning permission to knock down an existing dwelling and then build a new home to their exact specification

Five years ago Anna and Jake found the perfect location, a two thirds of an acre plot with uninterrupted views of a pleasant stretch of the Thames, complete with its own pontoon. The couple and their two children moved onto the plot, living in the existing property there, and started to think about creating their new dream home. One of the biggest challenges was finding the right company to translate their blueprint plans into magnificent reality, and after checking the credentials of half a dozen top-end housebuilders, they selected Octagon Bespoke. “With over forty years’ continuous experience in the luxury property market, along with reassurances from friends who owned Octagon
homes, we felt we could entrust our lifelong dream of building the perfect house to the Octagon team,” says Anna. “It’s a decision we’ve never regretted from day one.” Walking through the front door, after taking in a most dramatic trompe l’oeil decorated entrance hall, visitors discover a contemporary, light flooded open plan interior, where the rear of the house opens up to an elevated decked terrace, beyond which rolling lawns lead to the floating pontoon and the clients’ beloved Thames. The ground floor living space, with its clever undulation of differing floor levels, takes up a considerable proportion of the 9,000 sq ft home. The soft bronze tones of the Extreme Designs
kitchen, with its extraordinary leathered granite work top and latest range of Gaggenau appliances, extend harmoniously into adjoining family dining and sitting areas, with a centrepiece floating gas fired log fire. The astonishing entrance hall boasts a specially commissioned digital mural, which extends from the front door, around the vast swathe of walls, and descends via a circular sweep of marble stairs to the lower ground leisure and fitness suites. “Part of the hall has been designated for formal dining,” Anna explains, “where behind retractable glass doors, our treasured table, made from reclaimed Rhodesian railway sleepers that have been French polished, and leather lace (riempie) seated chairs take pride of place.” On the first floor are five substantial double bedrooms, three en-suites plus a separate family bathroom, and Anna’s own study. The second floor is devoted to the master suite, with a comfortable sitting room, and a double length dressing room with designated his ’n’ hers storage. The dressing room opens
onto a beautiful Perlato Olympo polished marble clad bathroom, with double open shower and freestanding bath – the warm earth tones of the marble marrying well with the antique copper taps and shower controls. The lower ground floor of their spectacular home houses a gym of gargantuan proportions, kitted out to professional standards. Then there’s the playroom, with a full size pool table, cinema screen wall, and long 90-degree angle cocktail bar, facing enough sumptuous high stools for a dozen or so house guests. “This has been a long, and at times, exhausting project,” says Anna. “We were ambitious with our vision for design and specification and our team of architects, suppliers, and not least Octagon, have been there every step of the way. Events, marketing and PR manager at West End Lane Books “I’ve lived in West Hampstead for over 20 years and have brought both of my daughters up here. I love the friendly community and the great mix of independent shops and cafés, which gives the place a really sociable vibe. We also have some lovely green spaces locally: the green on West End Lane, Fortune Green and the lovely old Victorian Hampstead Cemetery, which is full of wild flowers and birdsong... and of course, the Heath is just up the road. On Saturdays, when I’m not working, I like to stroll up to the excellent Farmers’ Market. Afterwards I might meet a friend for brunch at the fabulous Wet Fish Café, which has a great atmosphere and is the perfect spot to watch the world go by while enjoying a delicious snack or meal. Up the road in Mill Lane, I love to pop into In the Garden, a gorgeous gardening shop that offers a really fresh and unusual range of plants throughout the year. The team there are great at giving advice to gardeners like me who are keen but in need of guidance! Another favourite is The Village Haberdashery, which stocks an amazing range of fabrics, wool and millinery materials to satisfy everyone from pro dressmakers working on their next commission to amateurs who are just looking for some beautiful ribbon or trim; the shop also hosts a variety of clubs and classes. We’re also lucky to have held on to our library on West End Lane, which is something of a miracle these days! Speaking of reading, I can’t not mention West End Lane Books, West Hampstead’s long established and much-loved independent bookshop, where I have worked for 10 years. Did you know? As the area underwent rapid development in the late 17th century, only two green spaces remained: West End Green and Fortune Green. Locals battled fiercely to save them. In 1882, when hoarding was erected around West End Green in anticipation of building work, 200 men tore down the boards and set them on fire. Eventually, in 1885, the local Vestry (the equivalent of the Council), bought the land and ten years later they also acquired Fortune Green as an open space, following more local protests when it too was threatened by developers.

PUTTING COMMUNITY FIRST Establishing closer links to and engaging with neighbours and the local and wider community can be just as important as a rounded academic education. May Lee, Director of Sixth Form and Outreach at Queen’s Gate School in South Kensington explains why
W
e believe that partnerships and community outreach are not just ‘the right thing to do’, they provide a range of life-changing, inspiring and fun projects that enrich us all as individuals and allow our communities to flourish. We value partnerships with local state schools. At Queen’s Gate, we believe that state and independent schools share a moral mission: to provide an excellent education for all children who can then, together, make the world a better place. We also wish to strengthen our long-standing partnership with Age UK and the Kensington & Chelsea Foundation. Thus, outreach is a key part of our core purpose and we run a varied programme of initiative and partnership projects, which provide real benefits for everybody involved. Bursary support Each year the school offers support to the value of £500,000 to families, who may not normally be able to afford our fees, enabling their daughters to benefit from a Queen’s Gate education. Bursaries are means tested and are available in both the Junior and Senior Schools. This year the Elizabeth de Leeuw Bursary will launch, made possible by a legacy from Miss de Leeuw, a former Head Girl of Queen’s Gate and a member of staff. This Bursary will be for girls entering the Sixth Form. Age UK Lunch Club We host a weekly lunch club for the elderly in the local community, with the principal aim of fostering intergenerational contact. We are conscious of the fact that, according to the Kensington and Chelsea Foundation, 47 per cent of homes in the borough have only one person living in them – the highest in the country. Loneliness and isolation are a great concern and our project seeks to engage with this. We regularly host around 12 to 15 elderly people, plus workers from Age UK, who join a group of pupils from Year 9 upwards and a teacher for the lunch club; and our school chef always ensures that Thursdays are traditional lunch days, which are likely to appeal to our guests. We are now extending the provision to include opportunities for our elderly friends to take part in Art, Music, IT and PE lessons. In addition to the regular lunches, we also host a Christmas dinner, Easter tea and summer tea dance. The latter is a real highlight – in 2019, we invited Tom Carradine to provide entertainment for the tea dance and we all enjoyed a sing-along with old time London music hall and film favourites.
Foodbank Friday in support of the Trussell Trust and in partnership with the Kensington and Chelsea Foundation Our sixth formers organise a weekly collection of non-perishable items from pupils and staff in both the Junior and Senior Schools. They deliver these and stay to help distribute them to those in the Borough who are in need. This scheme has provided an important opportunity for our girls to learn about community services as well as developing practical, logistical and marketing skills. Our Foodbank Friday has been running for over a year now and we are delighted with the positive difference it has made in our local community. We are aiming to expand the scheme and hope to liaise with local cafés and shops, collecting surplus produce and delivering this to local food banks and homeless shelters. US Scholars Programme Queen’s Gate is hugely excited to have partnered with A-List Education to provide comprehensive support to students from the Ark Academy Group who are seeking to attend university in the United States. Through this new initiative, commencing in January 2020, we will be offering our academic teaching expertise, facilities and events to the Ark scholars, in order to enrich their learning journey and to enhance their US application. Ark students will have access to our Sixth Form enrichment programme, which includes opportunities to take part in our weekly Wider World lectures and termly Inspiring Women series, and to become actively involved in the workshops and masterclasses we have planned for Science Week and the
Lower Sixth Enrichment and Higher Education days. In addition, successful applicants will receive expert support through the entire US application process, including access to ACT examination preparation classes delivered by A-List Education and hosted at Queen’s Gate School. Furthermore, we will be setting up a ‘buddy system’ where Queen’s Gate Lower Sixth students applying to US Universities will be ‘buddied’ with Ark scholars. This should offer a forum for the students to support each other in a friendly environment where they can meet others applying to US Colleges and Universities. QG Super Saturdays Our free Saturday morning event series for children aged 2-5 years old and their families is open to everyone in the local community. From dance and mindfulness to craft and animals, our aim is to provide workshops hosted by expert facilitators that introduce children to activities outside of the curriculum. STEMming up to the mark It’s clear why there’s been such a push to get more girls studying STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) in recent years. Girls in England are still substantially less likely than boys to consider taking a STEM subject at A level. And just 22 per cent of people working in this fast-growing sector are women. Pupils at all-girl schools could have an advantage when it comes to correcting this imbalance. “They have ownership of all the subjects, rather than some being for boys and some for girls,” says Vicki Thompson, head of product design and graphic communication at Queen’s Gate School in South Kensington. “They also don’t get overlooked in class because sometimes boys can be quite noisy!” Queen’s Gate is evidently doing things right: around 30 per cent of its A level exam entries are in STEM subjects. Vicki credits this to combining a project-based approach with a growth mindset, where failure is something to learn from, not fear. “We design projects that will appeal to our cohort – such as vegan organic soaps – as well as covering computing and 3D printers,” she explains. “Design projects are iterative, so girls learn it’s okay if something doesn’t

Start at a young age by being selective about the types of toy she has. Encourage her to be interested in STEM topics, even if they aren’t
your preference. Show that you’re curious about how things work, and take her to the Design Museum and Science Museum to explore more. Learning and experimenting together is good for the growth mindset. 3. Make use of the resources available.
