Beat the blues with a stylish morning caffeine-fix
FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to your shiny January issue of Fabric, and here’s to a much better year (please!). The gorgeous Jo Hartley graces our cover this month. Fresh from an extraordinary performance as Trina in In my Skin, she’s got series three of After Life coming up later this month, with a couple of other exciting projects following later in the year. She reveals all in our exclusive interview. Elsewhere in the magazine, you’ll find our aesthetics special. Demand for non-surgical procedures is higher than ever before thanks to all those hours we’ve been spending studying our own faces on video calls. If you’re thinking about tweaking your appearance in 2022, have a read of this first – we asked the experts for their top tips, and reviewed some of the hottest treatments in town. Of course, if home upgrades are more your thing, you’ll find plenty of inspiration on that front in our interiors and property sections, from furniture for pampered pooches to hot new homes. Enjoy.

THEATRE
The Winston Machine 18 January to 19 February, New Diorama Theatre
This is the first of three major new commissions to mark New Diorama’s tenth anniversary year – and it sets the bar high. From the talented hands of Kandinsky Theatre, the play is hailed as an epic, intimate family saga about our contested heritage and the shadow of Winston Churchill. The drama follows Charlotte, who, at the height of the Blitz, is living each day like her last whilst in the grip of a passionate affair with a Spitfire pilot. Cut to 80 years later and her granddaughter Becky, stuck in her hometown and singing old songs at other people’s weddings, can only dream of a more exciting life. Urging us to stay and chat post-play, we can grab a free slice of pizza courtesy of Domino’s Camden, too. 15-16 Triton Place, NW1 (020 7383 9034; newdiorama.com)
EXHIBITION
Esther Haase: Esther’s World Until 30 January, Leica Gallery
German born Haase initially trained as a dancer, and it’s no coincidence that her figurative photographs portray a bold fluidity of movement. Working across global fashion titles, and with some of the world’s most revered fashion houses, the snapper offers a seductive visual narrative in her work, both satisfying the demands of her commercial clients, and engaging emotionally with art audiences. Curated by Sebastian Lux from the F.C. Gundlach Foundation, this is a rare chance to see the dynamic works up close and personal in Mayfair. “Esther’s pictures celebrate the joy of being, passion, the self-confident play with sexuality, the escape from the rigid corset of everyday life” said the late Gundlach. “Her female characters are self-confident and sovereign, like Esther herself they are full of energy and emotion, always in a state of dynamism.” 64-66 Duke Street, W1K (020 7629 1351; store.leica-camera.com/uk/en/gallery/home) Vladimir Malakhov, Berlin 2009

January’s offering is the Sarah Adina Smith directed Birds of Paradise, which is based on the 2019 novel Bright Burning Stars by A.K. Small. In February we have writer-director-star Nana Mensah’s debut feature film Queen of Glory, which follows a university doctoral student grappling with cultural expectations, demands and pressures. We do love a thoughtfully put-together subscription box and this one appeals on multiple levels. Words with Wine allows us to indulge in a newly released paperback every month alongside a full-sized bottle of red, white or rosé, delivered straight to our doorstep. Rather brilliantly, the wine is selected to complement the novel so you may find yourself supping a full-bodied Malbec as you get stuck into a dark and gripping thriller. Then the next month you might enjoy a crisp and refreshing Sancerre as you read a sexy summery page-turner. With membership to an exclusive online book club included, this is a ‘novel’ way to do wine pairings.

Alan Wheatley Art, Christopher Kingzett Fine Art, and Jealous Gallery are just three Londonbased art spaces amongst over 100 galleries represented at this large-scale collectors’ fair of modern and contemporary art. The five-day event also welcomes exhibitors from as far afield as Australia and the US, making it a truly international affair. As always, the inclusive LAF offers an engaging and decidedly non-snooty way in for aspiring collectors, with a series of curated displays and an inspiring programme of talks, panel discussions and artists’ insights. Prospective buyers should keep peepers peeled for some illustrious names, from Bridget Riley to David Hockney, while lesser-known painters and sculptors could well provide a shrewd investment.

ADVANCED COSMETIC PROCEDURES
ALL CHANGE FOR THE NEW YEAR WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
The battle with unwanted hair, and the removal of it, is an ongoing one for many and most people think about how to remove hair effectively and permanently at some point. Waxing and shaving, the most popular methods of hair removal, offer good results, but are unfortunately only a temporary solution. At Advanced Cosmetic Procedures the clinic offers electrolysis, the only permanent solution which focuses on the hair follicle itself, so that the hair will never grow back. Did you know that electrolysis can also be used to treat a range of skin conditions? It is also a very effective cosmetic treatment for certain skin conditions, such as thread veins, spider veins, blood spots and skin tags among others. As a fully qualified member of the British Institute and Association of Electrolysis, the owner Debbie Wilkins is a specialist in electrolysis, and with over twenty years experience in the industry you will be in safe hands. Debbie believes in using the highest standard of products, and she has had extensive training from BIAE, Sterex, Positive Pathways and HOFF International, so you can always expect a top-quality service that is tailored to meet your needs with excellent results.

ince the Pandemic started, we’ve spent more time than ever before examining ourselves on video calls, so it’s perhaps unsurprising that we’re investing more on our appearance. Many of us are turning to tweakments – non-invasive treatments that smooth, tighten and sculpt. Unlike cosmetic surgery, these types of treatments require little to no downtime, making them super convenient. Added to that, they allow us to make smaller, more incremental changes that can add up to make a huge difference – gradually building a look that is natural; us, but better. And with celebs and influencers showcasing their results on social media, there’s no longer a taboo around admitting to having work done. Everybody has heard of Botox and fillers, but as technology advances, there are so many more options available to us. We asked some of the Capital’s best aestheticians what they think is going to be big this year.

“Our aim is always to enhance and beautify, rather than alter looks… I think that this year we will see more of a focus on regenerative treatments that stimulate and harness natural collagen production, with a focus on this rather than relying so heavily on the use of dermal fillers. Injectable treatments such as Radiesse, Sculptra and Profhilo give very natural stimulatory affects that work over time with the patient’s own body to generate very natural, aesthetically pleasing results, and they are in increasingly high demand. These injectable treatments can also be combined with technological treatments that stimulate natural collagen production, such as Ultherapy and Morpheus8. Using two treatments in combination in this way often gives superlative aesthetic outcomes. Indeed, in select cases the results can be similar to surgical face lifting. I also see there being a huge focus on refining the silhouette to create healthy, toned, shapely bodies; technologies such as EMsculpt NEO reduce fat by an average of 30 per cent and increase muscle mass by an average of 25 per cent. This can be used cleverly to reduce fat in key target areas, such as on the thighs to tone, reduce fat and to enhance and improve the shape. It can also be used very successfully to tone arms, as well as on the abdomen and glutes to create shapely curves. The exciting thing about innovative technology like this is that it is bespoke to each patient’s needs – one to watch develop and evolve during 2022.” (cosmeticskinclinic.com)
“This year there will be even more focus on skin health and collagen boosting treatments such as Profhilo (a revolutionary ‘beneath the skin’ hyaluronic acid moisturising treatment). These treatments are great long-term investments in the ‘age-well’ philosophy, and I like them because they don’t actually alter your natural face shape. When these are underpinned with an intelligent sprinkling of dermal filler and skin tightening treatments such as Ultherapy, which uses ultrasound technology to target the deep structural layers of the skin and increase collagen production, we can help to optimise the best clinical outcome.” (cosmeticskinclinic.com)

back to basics in 2022: rather than following a particular trend, I think this will be the year of the individual. The year of the anti-trend – I think we will be rejuvenating patients to look like the very best version of themselves, appreciating and embracing their uniqueness. With fillers like Teosyal from TEOXANE we are now able to offer patients brilliantly bespoke, tailored treatments, suited to their individual needs – allowing them to truly embrace their own faces. It works exceptionally well for facial contouring – tightening and contouring the jawline – and can even be used on the delicate areas around the eyes to remove bags. “2022 will all be about offering people access to incredible skincare technologies, and beyond that, layering these technologies to trigger our systems to work more efficiently. That’s what EF Future Health is all about: offering future facing skin solutions that allow us to optimise our bodies, resulting in the slowdown of cell degeneration and ageing. I am very excited about our multi-layered Signal Cell Therapy Method as it uses advanced needling with dynamic penning to infuse Signalling Factors as a messenger for cellular repair, triggering a regeneration effect. What is exciting is that these brilliant signalling factors literally reeducate skin to function better, which results in it behaving like younger more vibrant skin. What’s not to love? The future of the smartest ageing is being able to trigger our bodies to truly regenerate and dramatically improve appearance and complexion, keeping our cells young and efficient.” (ef-futurehealth.com)

When a facial promises to be the “Rolls-Royce of non-invasive treatments” it really must be tried to be believed. Can it really live up to such a grand claim? As you’d expect from a facial, it starts with a cleanse and peel, and then microdermabrasion to remove dead skin cells and prepare the skin for extraction. Next comes some fairly gentle microneedling – it feels tingly rather than painful and works on sending serum deep into my skin to encourage collagen rejuvenation. What follows is a lot more sci-fi, as a collagen mask is applied, which helps to cool the skin and reduce redness (definitely required after microneedling). A seemingly not-so scientific layer of cling film is applied over the top – my therapist explains that this is because the next stage of the procedure, lymphatic drainage, is performed with electro-pulse technology, and for obvious reasons, this necessitates a dry surface. As the probes are gently applied to my face I also have the double whammy of a warming LED light shining on my face, which is working its magic rejuvenating my skin. Not just the “Rolls-Royce” of treatments, this is also a world first, because the Supreme Skin Regenerator is performed under state-of-the-art brainwave optimisation. In other words, while my therapist gets to work on de-ageing my face, she pops some headphones onto my ears, and I listen to abstract sounds that are designed to stimulate blissful alpha, theta and delta brainwaves. This hypnotic state is the very pleasant half-awake/half-asleep phase that precedes sleep and is known to support cell repair and regeneration. The sounds are a chilled out mix of jungle noises, birdsong and music, and appear to work exactly as planned. I have no idea if I have been awake or asleep when the therapist gently informs me it is time to leave (no doubt she is too polite to tell me if I have been snoring!). This ultimate facial is designed to help boost skin’s biosynthesis and improve the appearance of fine lines, firmness, tone and texture, as well as leaving the face looking refreshed and lifted. I definitely see evidence of that when I get a first glimpse of myself in the mirror. There is no redness, thanks to the cooling collagen mask, and is that a cheekbone or two I see? Hello, my old friends, it’s been while. BP

Like many, I don’t like my nose, but the thought of undergoing a nose job has always filled me with fear. Fast forward to 2022, in a growing era of lunch-hour tweakments, I am excited to learn that there are now more non-surgical options available. Non-surgical rhinoplasty, more widely known as the liquid nose job or nose fillers, is quickly becoming one of the most popular cosmetic procedures around. Practitioners are able to achieve incredible and instant results, reshaping and resizing the nose using dermal fillers. Considerably more affordable than surgery, the process is pain-free and requires zero downtime. Conveniently located in London’s West End, on Wimpole Street, Regents Park Aesthetics is reassuringly positioned within London’s most distinguished and respected private health care district. My appointment is with Kay Greveson – known for her light-handed and subtle technique, she has years of experience at top clinics under her belt, and talent in buckets. When we meet in her consultation room, her warm and down to earth approach makes it easy to chat about my concerns and what I would like to achieve. I explain that the small hump on my nose and the imbalance in my front profile is something that I notice all of the time, especially in photos when the light catches it, and that I’ve been considering doing something about it for a while. Going down the non-surgical route gives me the option to try out a new nose, safe in the knowledge that if it’s not what I want, it will return to its original shape after a short while rather than being a permanent fixture. A natural and well balanced nose is the aim of the game with Kay, and after an in depth chat during which she examines my face from every angle, she suggests using a small amount of filler to add to areas of deficit – which, for me, is along the contour of the profile and up at the top in the dent where nose meets forehead. Kay explains that this plumping effect will be achieved using Juvederm, a 100 per cent hyaluronic acid-based filling injection that has lignocaine local anesthetic built-in to enhance comfort during the procedure. I lay back in the chair and let Kay get to work. She first gently sterilises my nose and the skin around it and marks up the areas she will be treating. I can hardly feel anything as the needle is inserted, and with the lightest of touch, Kay carefully sculpts the filler as it’s gradually and precisely injected. There’s a real art to this, so it’s crucial to see somebody who is medically qualified, and who has both experience and a keen aesthetic eye. The whole procedure takes ten minutes and I’m shocked at how quick and minimally invasive it is. Kay reassures me that any side effects of the procedure will settle down in just a couple of days. Simple maintenance is required following the procedure, and it is expected to last up to a year, but it could be longer. The results are instant: my nose looks thinner, hump free and more refined, exactly as we had discussed in the consultation. It is clear that natural-looking results are Kay’s signature – I am now the very best version of me, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her. I have what you could euphemistically call an ‘English Rose’ complexion, though perhaps it would be more accurate to say that I suffer from thread veins. Having been told that electrolysis can help (no, apparently it’s not just for hair removal), I make an appointment with Harley Street-based Debbie Wilkins. It certainly isn’t the most glamorous of briefs, but I know I’m not alone in wanting to banish my red nose for good. Debbie is exceptionally qualified and experienced, not to mention warm and reassuring, and I relax the moment I step into her bright practice room. This is no new fangled procedure – incredibly, electrolysis has been around since 1875. While laser and IPL treatments seem to get all the press these days, electrolysis has been quietly and successfully dealing with a multitude of skin complaints and blemishes, way beyond the typical hair removal treatments that are usually associated with it. Not just spider veins on the face, but warts, skin tags, excessive hair – pretty much any kind of blemish you can think of can be zapped away with Debbie’s magic needle. An electrical current is passed into each individual vein through a needle the size of an eyelash, with Debbie systematically working her way around my nose, stopping every so often to allow me to have a breather – I’ll be honest, it does smart a little. It’s such an accurate method that there’s very little healing to be done afterwards (as Debbie says, “Why use a JCB digger to plant a daisy?”). While I am in the chair, Debbie offers to treat some of the little white dots (known as sebaceous hyperplasia) around my eyes. These can be caused by using the wrong types of skincare, or result from build-up of products like sunscreen in the pores. I also have a couple of rogue and very unwanted dark hairs that are swiftly dispatched. After just one session under the magnifying spotlight I can see an immediate improvement. As I head back out onto Harley Street, I feel much more confident – ready for that close-up. BP
Sometimes the oldies are the goodies – electrolysis has been used since 1875 for the removal of both unwanted hairs and skin blemishes
I don’t know about you, but after two kids and years of riding the weight rollercoaster, I don’t love my tummy. In terms of boundary-pushing, revelatory statements, I am aware that sits somewhere between “like… duh”, and “stating the bloomin’ obvious”, but I spend an inordinate amount of time pondering the state of my stomach – so much more than, say, the condition of my wrists or the aesthetics of my earlobes. Fat Is A Feminist Issue was written by Susie Orbach in 1978, so is older than I am, and yet… here we still are. When I found myself pondering a full tummy tuck, I wondered just why it was that I was prepared to put myself through expensive, painful, significant surgery – as if the emergency caesarean wasn’t enough on that front – just to appease my vanity; but still, with a wedding coming up, I want to feel as confident and comfortable in my body as I (and indeed everyone) deserve to. Enter Dr MediSpa, an award-winning group of clinics – newly opened in Knightsbridge, to join Marylebone and Loughton – who happen to be a UK Centre of Excellence for the Emerald laser fat reduction treatment. The Emerald laser is a new generation of fat-targeting treatment, particularly exciting for offering pain-free zapping with no downtime, in sessions of just half an hour each. The science is seriously impressive, but to distil it down into laymen’s terms: instead of killing fat cells, which can be counterproductive, causing the body to create more of them, the Emerald creates a temporary pore in the surface of the cells, allowing the fat to be released into, and processed through, the lymphatic system. This means the cells themselves shrink, but remain healthy and fully-functioning, enabling them to carry on sending the correct messages to the brain in terms of, among other things, appetite regulation. The results are therefore not only seriously promising in terms of inch loss but act as a ‘reboot’ to bodies – like my own – where years of yo-yo weight gain and loss have confused those messages. The time that I spend having the treatment is not only painless, but actually pleasant – half an hour, on my own, in a quiet room, knowing that I will emerge from it ever-so-slightly slimmer? Truly, who would say “no” to that? I was aware that this treatment was never going to achieve the same result as a tummy tuck – how on earth could it? – and having one’s expectations managed effectively is, in my experience, as important to the process as the outcome itself. And so, I was delighted when the brief I rather apologetically offered up – “I don’t want a miracle, I just want to look a bit better in my clothes!” – was not only met but exceeded. I lost several inches of circumference on my tummy, saw good reduction on my thighs, and even found tops fitting slightly better, all of which gave me that much-needed confidence boost ahead of my big day. Whilst it may not be able to resolve the underlying reasons that body confidence is a struggle for so many of us, above all else it helped me to hold my head a bit higher with a smile on my face, and who can say they wouldn’t benefit from that? KH A course of 10 Emerald laser sessions costs from £2,500. 18 Beauchamp Place, SW3 (020 3820 2199; drmedispa.com)

A sense of fun runs through everything pupils do at Heathside, and spending time on the Heath is integral
Opening young minds Gales of laughter from a Year 5 classroom, Year 3s practicing capoeira in the school hall and a visit from a triceratops for Year 1 – it’s all part of a normal day at Heathside “Parents instinctively know that happy children learn well. We see it with young children as they play, completely absorbed in their games. At Heathside, we take that natural curiosity and sense of fun and thread it though our teaching and learning so it is at the core of everything we do,” explains Headteacher, Katherine Vintiner. As a non-academically selective Prep school, Heathside aims to help all children to achieve the best possible outcomes that they can, whether that is entrance to a 13+ school, 11+, or nonselective school. Confidence is key A relaxed, informal atmosphere in the classroom, with everyone in the school on first name terms, helps children feel confident to have a go, push themselves and make mistakes. “We help children develop their resilience, so they are able to learn from mistakes and not be daunted when things
Well-rounded individuals Heathside’s approach is to provide a steady progression towards school entrance exams, layering in the skills that children require to do well. Preparing for exams without putting undue pressure on children is a challenging goal and requires excellent teaching. Parents are increasingly

Nurturing the spark The skill of the Heathside teachers lies in finding the spark of interest in every child and nurturing it as their maturity and understanding of the world develops. Using a topic-based curriculum that changes every six weeks, children are able to dive into subjects and acquire deep knowledge. The topics such as Towers, tunnels and turrets and Paws, claws and whiskers are used as the jumping off point for core subjects of literacy, creative writing, history and geography and STEM.
tuned into the importance of children’s mental health and expect schools to develop their resilience to cope with the competitive nature of secondary school exams. For children at Heathside, the focus is on enjoying learning – and by nurturing an individual’s progress, children thrive and want to do their best Keeping childhood special A broad curriculum, a stimulating range of clubs and excellent pastoral care are all expected at a good Prep school. So, what else can a school provide that makes it stand out? “At Heathside, spending time on Hampstead Heath is a central part of our school. We use the natural environment to stimulate children’s imaginations and allow them to enjoy free play, climbing trees and building dens. At Heathside, we believe this provides essential balance to a rich and varied curriculum and the pressures of modern city life,” Katherine concludes. Jo Hartley is buzzing, the response to her latest project, In My Skin, has been better than anything she, or anybody involved with the show, dared dream. The second series of the BBC coming of age show began showing in mid-November, and when Jo and I sit down to talk at the beginning of December, the praise has been flooding in from fans and critics alike. “I feel very, very emotional, but joyfully so…” she exclaims. “There’s just been message after message after message. Not just from people in the industry – my peers – which is incredible, but outside that, messages from people on Instagram, saying they are deeply grateful for the level of honesty and truth within this show, from all characters, and in the writing, especially.” Centred on the life of Welsh schoolgirl Bethan, the gritty, poignant storyline is based on writer Kayleigh Llewellyn’s own childhood, growing up with a mother who suffered mental illness. Jo plays Bethan’s bipolar mother, Trina. “I read the script and I was just absolutely blown away by the level of intense emotion and drama. And the sort of hilarity of the humour. The characters all jumped off the page. I was terrified, if I’m honest,” she says, recalling the process of being cast for the first series. “I just really wasn’t sure how I was going to find the levels that the character required for the performance. Obviously, in life, we all go through very difficult emotions, but bipolar is a very different experience,” she explains. Watching the show, it is evident that Jo did find those levels. “The way that I approached it was to speak to Kayleigh in depth, because her mother had it, and she had lived with it for most of her life. I did a lot of research with Bipolar UK, I watched a lot of YouTube footage of manic episodes,” she tells me. “I know that people live with this condition every day, and I wanted to know that I was being authentic and honest, and that I was doing a service in showing the truth. We didn’t want to make it perfect. It can’t be – I was doing a version of Kayleigh’s mother, and I had never met her mother, so I had to re-enact her using my own energy, and my intuition.” Preparation was key to being able to do that successfully, Jo explains. “Personally, I learnt the lines really well, and I did a lot of emotional recall, and used my five senses, and mimicry… And I used a lot of music – I produced playlists for the character. And I guess that I just had a confidence that came from being surrounded by a fantastic team of wonderful
people, so I allowed myself to just go for it. I tried to trust in myself, to be present, and to be a vessel for something to work through.” That it has been so well received is very special for Jo and the rest of the cast and crew. “When you do work, you don’t expect anything from it, even though you put everything you can into it,” she admits. “It is just mental when things work out really beautifully, and you know that all the hard work paid off, because somebody somewhere got something from it. And somebody, somewhere feels like they are no longer alone, that they can talk to people about things,” she smiles, happily. Last summer saw Jo appear in Marley Morrison’s Sweetheart, as the overbearing mother of AJ (played by Nell Barlow), an awkward teenager who falls in love with the lifeguard (played by Ella-Rae Smith) on a family holiday to a small caravan park. “Sweetheart was a very low budget movie, it was Marley’s first feature film – for me, that is where I began,” Jo explains, referring to the part of Cynth in This is England, which helped to launch her acting career back in 2006. “I always want to take risks, to give back. The cast is incredible, the story leapt off the page, my character had her own spiritual experience, a journey within Nell’s journey, so she wasn’t just an ornament, she went on this whole journey.” In fact, Jo’s performance won her a British Independent Film Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Though she didn’t win at the ceremony in early December, she is incredibly grateful for that nomination. “I feel like it is a great honour to get the nod from BIFA,” she tells me. “I think I was in town when I heard, and I was like: ‘Hey, what? Have you got the wrong number?’,” she laughs. There’s yet more to come from Jo this year, starting this month with the third series of Ricky Gervais’ critically acclaimed After Life, in which she plays June. Though she’s unable to tell me much about the series, she says that she believes it to be the best yet. “I didn’t think it could get better because it is so brilliant and wonderful…” she admits. Indeed, being involved in the series has been a real highlight for Jo. An experience that she will “never forget”. “I had such a joyful experience working with that man. He is so kind and talented and inclusive and humble,” she tells me, of Ricky. “He is very generous as well. We would prep together, he would ask me about my character, and we would do improv

on Zoom, and he incorporated a lot of things that I brought to it – my personal things that only Ricky and I know about. And I just thought that was such a kind thing – he had obviously seen things in me that he wanted to put within the character – and he does that with all his characters. For me it was the overtalking, the oversharing!” she admits, with a laugh. Another project she is excited to see come to fruition is Swede Caroline, a mockumentary focused on the world of competitive vegetable growers. “I play in the titular role, Caroline – I didn’t know what a titular role was until recently, but I like it!” she exclaims, with a giggle. “It was a riot. We had the most amazing time filming it… Caroline is part of the big veg community. She grows this huge marrow, and she takes it to a competition, and she gets disqualified, and she is heartbroken, because she could’ve been the first female champion. So, she is very grumpy. She goes home and two weeks later, it gets stolen. She goes on this crazy journey to find it; she hires a pair of private detectives… It is going to be either amazing or… I don’t know. But I have a really good feeling about it,” Jo tells me. “Finn Bruce and Brook Driver, the creative directors, they are two new guys out of the gates, and they are super talented, and they had this amazing team around them. There is a lot of buzz around it, so we will see what happens in the edit. But, again, it was a first feature film and I wanted to support it.” In fact, alongside starring in the film, Jo also acts as executive producer on Swede Caroline. “It was my first time in that role, which was very exciting – scary as well,” she tells me. “So, I was able to be part of the casting. I helped cast, and do pre-production, and I will be with them in the edit, too. So that’s 2022, Swede Caroline, coming at you like a large marrow!” she laughs, infectiously. Jo will also be seen in the third series of Sky Studios’ Das Boot, which is due for release later this year. “I play the wife of Ray Stevenson, who’s the lead in season three. We have a beautiful storyline,” she tells me. “After the first lockdown, I started filming in September 2020 with Das Boot and I did not stop. I went from that to In My Skin, to After Life, to The Cleaner
“I DID EIGHT PROJECTS BACK-TO-BACK. I WAS HAVING A LOT OF FUN, AND CONSTANTLY LEARNING LINES, THINKING: ‘WHO AM I NOW? WHO AM I NOW?’ BUT IT WAS GOOD…”
– I did that with Greg Davies, too, and that was really fun – to Swede Caroline. I have done other things, but I can’t remember now. I did eight projects back-to-back. I was having a lot of fun, and constantly learning lines, thinking: ‘Who am I now? Who am I now?’ But it was good,” she smiles. That Jo was able to work at such pace was perhaps due in part to Covid. That first lockdown proved an opportunity to get some space from work and gain some perspective. “I was able to use the time to watch movies and read books and do a lot of meditation. I did some writing – just working on some ideas. It is something that I have wanted to do for a long time, but I never really sat down and was still enough to do it,” she reveals. “I did keep fit – I did exercises on Zoom with a personal trainer, just trying to look after myself,” she recalls. “I tried to keep still, and use the time well, and accept what was going on, and catch up on things that you don’t usually have time to catch up on. It was a very difficult time for people, so there was a lot of calling to see if people were OK. There was a lot of Zooming going on – I connected with my family probably more than normal – I usually see them once a month, because they live up North. The main thing for me was the positive connections that I may not have had if I was just trudging around propelled by the intense daily schedules that we normally have. We go, ‘I’ve got to do this, this, this…’ But things came up that were more precious, and more rewarding spiritually.” Did the experience make her want to move closer to family, I wonder? “I don’t think I would move back up North; I don’t think I could, no,” she says. “I am very happy in London. I have got an incredible friendship base, and I love it. I am single, and free to do what I want. You never know what you are going to see or get here – there’s always a magical experience hidden somewhere that you haven’t stumbled on yet. It’s like you can never see all of it… So, for now, I am going to be staying in London, visiting Manchester a lot more, with maybe the possibility of a second home there.” The North’s loss is most certainly London’s gain. After Life series three launches on Netflix on 14 January. You can watch previous series on the streaming service now

FOOTWEAR
Sustainable sneakers Put your best foot forward this year in a pair of LØCI trainers. The sneakers are the brainchild of Londoners Emmanuel Eribo and Philippe Homsy, who launched the vegan, cruelty-free, and sustainable shoe brand in May last year. Each pair is made using recycled and natural materials sourced from the Mediterranean and Atlantic Coast of Africa – recycled ocean plastic, rubber, and foam, as well as bamboo and natural cork. They’re handmade by a shoemaker in Porto, using a progressive, ‘vertical integration’ production method – rather than the traditional bulk seasonal pre-orders, monthly production is scaled up or down in response to demand, helping to prevent surplus product and to manage environmental impact. And better yet, 10 per cent of the profits from each pair sold are donated to charities working in ocean preservation, including SEATURTLE.ORG, Mission Blue and British Divers Marine Life Rescue. We love the new collection, featuring mid- and high-top silhouettes in multiple colourways. “Our designers have been working hard to perfect the four new silhouettes and we’re so proud to be pushing the boundaries further with the expanded collection… there’ll be many more to come!” Say Emmanuel and Philippe.

FABRIC RECOMMENDS
Jo Hansford, Harvey Nichols The highlights that were the perfect caramel complement to tanned skin back in June have now been sun bleached to a brassy blonde that does nothing for my winter complexion, I’m hankering to return to my brunette roots (by which I mean childhood hair colour, my actual roots are sadly now grey). Who better to entrust a colour correction job to than the experts at Jo Hansford? Celebrating her 28th year in business, Jo herself has been described as the “first lady of colour” by Marie Claire and “best tinter on the planet” by American Vogue, and she has built a team of the Capital’s best colourists. Up until late last year they worked exclusively from her Mayfair salon, but November marked the opening of a second, luxurious new salon in Harvey Nichols, and I’m as keen to check it out as I am to get my tresses tended to. The space is surprising – open and bright, it features a wall of big windows that flood the salon with natural light. And it is huge, spreading expansively across 3,200 sq ft, and boasting two private rooms (for clients who prefer their privacy), pedicure stations and a treatment room offering traditional beauty services like spray tans and waxing. It is seriously impressive – easy to forget that you’re in the middle of one of the UK’s busiest department stores. My colour is being seen to by Alex, who, having worked with Jo since the age of 18, is one of her original colour angels. She agrees that the highlights need to go, and recommends a glossy, warm brown tint, through which the highlights will peep, giving the look of beautiful balayage. In no time at all she has mixed up the colour and set to work. Colour off, it’s on to styling. I’m booked in for a cut with Jessie, whose own sleek, long locks indicate that I am in safe hands. I am not disappointed, she tidies up the ends, giving me a blunt technical cut, with long layers around the face. The result is glamorous, glossy and gorgeous, a new look for the new year. LSJ Tint/vegetable colour from £130, cut and blow dry from £120. 4th Floor, Harvey Nichols, 109-125 Knightsbridge, SW1 (020 7112 1493; johansford.com)

NEXT STEPS
Encouraging creative and adaptable minds for a changing world, Hampstead’s Devonshire House Preparatory School provides an outstanding education from nursery age through to entry to senior schools Devonshire House is committed to providing outstanding care and education, to helping discover, inspire and develop pupils’ talents – and to supporting them in the move into their next schools. Children (from two and a half years) begin their journey in The Oak Tree Nursery, where a variety of sessions are available, from mornings only, to all day. The day is carefully arranged so that children attending different sessions are able to make the most of their time here. A wide, creative curriculum enables them to explore, investigate and ‘have a go’ and to calmly learn, laugh and enjoy their time with their new friends. The transition to Pre-Reception (from age three to four) is supported by the child’s teacher and other staff. Pupils are excited to move up through the School, and they are introduced to a little more structure at each stage, all the time with nurturing care. A full programme of early learning and play continues to build confidence. The results for senior school entry are exceptionally good, with some 40 scholarships and exhibitions to senior schools in the last three years. However, Devonshire House is perhaps
proudest that this is achieved in such a creative and happy school with its broad curriculum – and with so many extracurricular activities on offer, from coding and robotics, through to music ensembles and choirs. Boasting fine premises, with spacious grounds and two on-site AstroTurfed and walled gardens, the School offers a nurturing, happy, safe and calm environment that inspires a love of learning. Devonshire House is proud of its family atmosphere, it is a place where families come together for their children’s most formative years, and as such, the Head, senior leadership team and staff are committed to an open, trusting dialogue with parents about their children and are always available to advise and help throughout each child’s school career. At Devonshire House pupils learn how to work hard for their own achievements and to work with others with commitment, understanding and co-operation. They learn many things – traditional and innovative – and above all, they learn how to grow their talents and discover how they may want to apply them in their lives. Children can join in The Oak Tree Nursery, in Pre-Reception or Reception and at later stages, where vacancies arise. Discover how Devonshire House can guide your child from Early Years to senior school prep at an in-person tour. The next available event is at 10 am on 27 January. Doorstep dim sum Hibernating at home this month? Rather than resorting to the same tired takeaway options, why not treat yourself to delicious dim sum, courtesy of a brilliant new north London-based delivery service. Fans of the Chinese delicacy will probably be aware that the delectable dumplings don’t always do so well on the back of a delivery driver’s scooter, but that creating them from scratch isn’t easy – it was this that led Londoners Tom and Maya to launch their new company last year. Having been made redundant during the lockdown, they came up with a brilliant idea of delivering frozen, ready-to-cook dim sum along with a specially developed, biodegradable steamer and full preparation instructions. Freezing the dumplings before delivery locks in flavour and helps to maintain their structure. Five meal kits are available, offering a mix of meat, fish and veggie options, with each kit containing a selection of dumplings, gyoza, siu mai, bao buns, sticky rice, salad and dips to feed either two or four people. Delivery is available on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and dumplings can be stored in the freezer if you don’t want to eat them immediately. There are even subscription options available for those who really dig their dim sum. From £29.50 for a Veggie Patch box for two people (dingdongdimsum.com)

Now lovingly restored, the unique space, located in the creative St. Paul’s area of the city, houses a 23-bedroom hotel and neighbourhood hangout with coffee shop, bar, kitchen, event space and garden. Each of the very special bedrooms is unique, decorated in the eclectic style Artist in Residence hotels have become known for, with original industrial features, limited edition artworks and vintage furniture. Looking for your next big knees up? If you’re having festive withdrawals already, this Burns Night package from The Fife Arms might be just the ticket. Set in Braemar, nine miles from Balmoral, it is a beautifully restored 19th century Victorian coaching inn turned luxury highland retreat by Manuela and Iwan Wirth – two of the world’s most influential art dealers. Driven by their wish to create something truly exceptional, the hotel is a celebration of craftsmanship. The Russell Sage-designed interiors feature a thoughtful collection of historic objects, whimsical curios, artwork and artefacts, as well as specially commissioned contemporary works. And a strong Scottish narrative runs through everything. So, it should come as no surprise that they go big on Burns Night here, with a twonight package including a formal dinner commemorating the life of Scotland’s most beloved bard, poet and lyricist. The celebration includes an Address to the Haggis and evening entertainment, including traditional readings and musical performances. Of course, it wouldn’t be Burns

The cynical would say it’s a hollow, soulless place that’s all about the money. But others would argue it’s a dynamic, future-facing playground of a city, celebrating the very best in human ingenuity. Leaving any pre-conceived ideas behind at Heathrow, we were determined to see Dubai with fresh eyes and to eke out some lesser lauded parts – no matter how much we’d be dazzled by the lights. Of course, we’re taken out at the first hurdle as our late-night transfer zooms through the sprawling metropolis, every inch of it illuminated. Wide-eyed and with dropped jaws we pass spectacular buildings that would dwarf London’s skyline, learning that much of it has, impressively, gone up in the last decade. Everything here is bigger and brighter, each imposing skyscraper seemingly outdoing its predecessor. Even the palm trees – of which hundreds line the streets – are wrapped in fairy lights, because you simply cannot have too much sparkle. We arrive at the fittingly glitzy Caesars Palace with just enough time to check in, order room service and take in the twinkly, exotic view from our balcony, pondering what Dubai has in store for us over the next few days. We’ve timed our trip to coincide with EXPO 2020 (it’s come a year late but kept the branding) and like many who’ve made the pilgrimage from all over the globe, we spend our first day ambitiously dipping in and out of the mega-exhibition’s pavilions. But there’s 192 to explore, each representing a different country, and we’d need weeks to fully experience them all. Feeling a proud sense of continuity – the first universal exposition of 1851 was, of course, held at our own Crystal Palace – we visit the UK’s offering. An in-joke amongst organisers is that ours has the best queuing L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G

system, and they’re not wrong. As we dutifully criss-cross our way up to the entrance, we’re met with a magnificent conical structure projecting hundreds of interchangeable digital words. We’re told the pavilion is inspired by a project from the late great Stephen Hawking and features a collective message that’s continuously evolving, generated both by AI and visitors’ contributions, before it’s beamed into the ether. This city within a city boasts Olympian scale but a truly grounding experience comes in the form of London-based artist Nicola Anthony, who talks us through her sculptural piece in progress. One of EXPO’s central themes is sustainability (alongside mobility and opportunity), and Nicola’s delicately hand-crafted work represents an hourglass on its side, suggesting that humankind is currently at the central bottleneck, with an uncertain future ahead. In cool ocean blues, the piece comprises organic materials and coastal finds, yet it’s linked up to mind-boggling tech. Suspended ditsy lights either twinkle away or experience violent surges, all powered in real-time by the COP26 hashtag, reminding us of the global conversation on climate. Between sustenance stops (the African food hall is a must), casually chatting to patrolling robots like it’s 2076, and taking in some wonderfully moving films and installations, we have our fill of art, architecture, science and culture, and yet we’ve only seen a fragment. Back in the centre of the action we dine at Trèsind. One of Dubai’s hottest tables, the restaurant offers truly innovative Indian cuisine and in a city of wows, doesn’t hold back on the theatrics. We’re treated to the chef’s tasting menu and devour our way through ten exquisitely crafted dishes, starting with an amuse bouche pani puri. A refined version of the popular street dish, we’re advised to chomp the thing whole, dehydrated potato butterfly and all, to fully experience its outlandish burst of flavours. Other stand-out dishes include the

TRAVEL Caesars Palace is situated on the luxurious Bluewaters Island, alongside Ain Dubai, the largest observation wheel in the world
modernist chaat tart, the paneer tikka paturi starter, and the paan cotton candy, which arrives at our table to audible gasps from envious co-diners. As we sip on our last creative cocktail of the evening we pick fluffy white candyfloss from a sculptural silver tree – a suitably elaborate finale. If you want to see the city in full sparkle, then the only way is up. It comes as no surprise that Dubai’s answer to the London Eye, Ain, is the biggest in the world, reaching a tummy-turning 250m. We take a late-night spin (in fact a reassuringly gentle ride) on this colossal observation wheel to experience the cityscape in lights. Towering over the glistening marina, we view the city’s iconic landmarks and illuminated super-structures in awe. With newly confident heads for heights, we’re keen to scale the Dubai Frame, too. One of the city’s most recognisable architectural triumphs, the gilded picture frame stands at 150m and is strategically positioned with modern Dubai on one side and its older quarters on the other, offering visitors a chance to sightsee left and right, and for those brave enough, down. The giant golden structure is made from steel, aluminium and reinforced concrete, but also glass with its central see-through observation deck. Look down if you dare. Intrigued to see the less attention-grabbing side of Dubai, this time on the ground, we head to Deira for a souks and creekside food walk courtesy of local indie enterprise, Frying Pan Adventures. Led by the engaging and insanely knowledgeable Farida Ahmed, we’re immediately taken off the beaten track and into a sensory world of exotic spices and foodstuffs. We’ve seen enough gold. Here, it’s all about the frankincense and myrrh – and the intoxicating saffron, indigo and dried limes. We’d been advised to skip breakfast and soon realise why as we munch our way through hearty anda-paratha rolls washed down with a traditional cup of chai. Making our way past tiny utilitarian cafés complete with resident lazy street kittens, we take an abra ride across the creek. Finding ourselves in a vibrant textile souk in Bur Dubai, Farida shares invaluable tips on bartering before guiding us through the Indian quarter and finally on to Al Khayma, an Emirati heritage restaurant in the historic Fahidi neighbourhood. Set in one of the area’s iconic Barjeel houses, the eatery is a delightfully wholesome affair and, after our sunshiny walk, we’re more than happy to take off our shoes, curl up on cosy floor cushions, and feast on traditional rice pilafs, stews and seafood dishes, scooping it up with our saffron-stained fingers. An extreme change of scenery takes us from the narrow, winding streets of the souks to the sandy open expanse of the desert – and we’re up at the crack of dawn to do it. An intense orange sunrise greets us as we leave the city behind, headed for the Platinum Heritage desert camp – a privately owned nature reserve that strives to protect the land’s flora, fauna, and incredible history. Camel-racing is huge here and as we enter the site we meet dozens of the majestic animals, draped in cool cotton blankets and with colourful basket-like muzzles. But these are the racing kind. Before we meet our more docile (read male) humped friends we’re fitted for head scarves, tied the traditional
way, before jumping in the back of a jeep. Mounting these graceful animals in the least graceful fashion brings a mix of fear and hilarity but we soon find our stride as we drink in the incredible quiet and the disappearing horizon. Our shadows join us on the ride to the bedouin camp, at which we get an introductory lesson in falconry before we tuck into a nourishing breakfast of fava beans, fresh fruit and traditional chabab served with sweet date syrup. Back at Caesars Palace, there’s time to fully relax and, importantly, take in that winter sun we’d been craving. We spend our last day in Dubai lunching at Gordon Ramsay’s on-site Hell’s Kitchen, devouring the very best of British fare complete with a Brit-Pop soundtrack. We have our tired bones pummelled at the hotel’s luxurious Qua Spa, and we flit between turquoise pool dips and spreading out on the beachfront cabanas, ice-cold cocktail in hand as we reflect on our Arabian adventures with a smile. We’ve sure packed a lot in. From £1,429 pp for five nights at Caesars Palace on a half-board basis, including direct return flights from London Gatwick with Emirates. Depart 5 March 2022. No jargon here. No Egos. No high-pressure sales tactics. Just simple & honest advice
Buy to Let Hunter is a fresh approach to property purchase – we recently sat down with one of our early investors to catch up with him Raffi is a local business owner doing a great thing for the world – he arrived in Richmond with enough money for just 8 months. He followed a hunch and set up Bantam Materials - providing Prevented Ocean Plastic, recycling and collecting from at-risk coastal communities and creating a research centre on the Richmond Green – we think he is marvellous, and we are not the only ones! He just won: “Sustainable Initiative of The Year”. Whoop! Raffi realised that he wanted to invest in property but preferred a professionally managed structure run by trustworthy people to allow him the freedom to focus on the craziness in his own world. Raffi approached us and asked us to help. Through Buy to Let Hunter, Raffi has purchased a pure investment property and a holiday home in the Cotswolds which his family uses in conjunction with renting it out to paying guests.
Raffi says: “For me there wasn’t a second choice when I met the Buy to Let Hunter team. It was about working with someone trustworthy and when speaking to Adrian, one of the directors, a local guy, it was clear he was someone I could trust. I didn’t need to look any further. And my expectation has been more than met.” Obviously, investing in anything is risky, but understanding that, Raffi feels he has enhanced his lifestyle greatly. His money is safe, he has a lovely spot for a free holiday that pays for itself, in fact it pays Raffi just to own it.
housekeeping, managing the calendar, making sure everything is perfect for my family and visitors. I just turn up. Oh, and cash the cheques!” “And I had no doubt I could trust Adrian after I met him. The single biggest thing is that my interests were ahead of our co-profit. So, I feel I can really trust any advice and I know my money is safe.” We do love a happy punter! If you think we might be able to enhance your life in the way we have for Raffi, please give us a call or visit our website to find out more about us.
Raffi says: “My kids have a pool, access to nature, the cottage overlooks a lake…. And it’s just an hour and a half from London.”

CATH BECKETT
As one half of interior design studio Yellow London, Cath is no stranger to daring décor. Her own Notting Hill home, a Victorian conversion flat, is a celebration of colour, pattern and print WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by MATT CLAYTON
Cath mixes bold prints and bright colours with antique furnishings, for a look that is gloriously lived in
What do you usually look for in a property? I think you get a feeling from a property, it’s nice to avoid too many corridors, that’s why I liked this flat as it had a small central square hall, rather than lots of rooms off a corridor. I don’t have many non-negotiables as it depends on the situation, I think it’s important to look at the pros and cons of the specific property and weigh them up. Something that may be a negative in one, could be a positive in another, for example ceiling height. Did you do anything structurally when you moved in? I didn’t need to do anything structural, but I did pretty much everything else. Every surface was painted or papered or tiled! It was very tired before and very much less colourful. And it needed a bit of love. How important is character to you? Very important! I would always try and keep anything original in the house, or re-install features where necessary. It’s a great part of a project to find things which have been hidden, a fireplace for example, or even seeing old layers of wallpaper as they get revealed. How would you describe your personal interiors style? Somewhere between maximalism, traditional and contemporary – with comfort being key. Tell me about your furniture choices The furniture in my flat is mostly from antiques markets or sales, and then a few bespoke pieces, for example the red bedside tables and the ottoman. This is similar to how we work with our clients, too. We love using antiques where possible, but it depends slightly on the projects. Can you talk me through a few of your favourite pieces? One of my favourite pieces would have to be my tulip headboard, I’m still obsessed by that fabric which is by Josef Frank (available

from Svenskt Tenn). And then the cloud ottoman, which I designed – our amazing upholsters produced something which was better than I could have imagined. Any thrifty finds or beloved heirlooms? My best thrifty find has to be the orange table and chairs in the dining room, which are old beer festival tables from Newark Antiques. The table and two benches were £80. And in terms of beloved heirlooms, my grandmother’s horse lamps: my mum had them before me and I had been eyeing them up for years, so she very kindly parted with them. What’s next for Yellow London? Any exciting projects coming up? We have lots of lovely projects we are working on at the moment, a new build house on the coast in Cornwall, and a grade II listed house in Hertfordshire to name a few, and then some others in the pipeline, too. yellowlondon.com

Digital excellence
While many schools scrabbled to put together an online offering during the pandemic’s closures, for Queen Anne’s School, digital teaching was already in the DNA The last 18 months have changed education forever, forcing schools to embrace technology in order to make teaching accessible from anywhere, but for Queen Anne’s School in Caversham, Berkshire, an innovative digital approach had been in place for some time. Day-to-day, the QAS digital approach, which is referred to by staff as the ‘one-to-one scheme’, means that each child has a device in the classroom, and teachers and pupils can access and interact with all resources through the cloud. A teacher can share a pupil’s live work on the smartboard for all to discuss. They can even mark work in real time whilst students are working on an exercise. A system called ‘digital ink’ combines a touchscreen, a keyboard and a stylus, allowing pupils access to all the methods they may need – from handwriting their Maths workings to touch-typing as they listen to a History lecture. Of course, this doesn’t mean that everything takes place on the screen. In English, for example, paper, pen and printed books still have an important place and
L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G
20_FabricJAN22_Advertorial_Queen Anne_1p.indd 72
traditional methods are combined with the digital approach. Thanks to this set-up, throughout the lockdowns, students were able to complete almost their entire timetable remotely, illustrating the extensive benefits of access to digital excellence. Thomas Lange, Assistant Head – Digital, explains: “The full academic timetable continued online with very minimal loss of learning
time and pupils immediately had access to their resources through the cloud. In more practical subjects our teachers were equipped with the skills and resources to adapt. Art lessons became tutorial videos in some cases, our Director of Sport could be found doing live circuits around her living room and the Music department developed the QA Sounds podcast.”
The quality of the offering at Queen Anne’s is so good that they have just been awarded the prestigious Microsoft Showcase School Award for the third year running. This award acknowledges the extensive digital teaching and learning that has become integral to the school’s approach. The leading girls’ day and boarding school is one of just a small group of schools in the UK to achieve this accolade. Commenting on the achievement, Headmistress, Julia Harrington explains: “The school has to demonstrate digital excellence in four key areas: teaching and learning that is fit for purpose in the 21st century, innovation, leadership, and inclusion. Having been awarded this status for a third year running, we will continue to enhance the development of lifelong skills including computational thinking, critical analysis and problem solving.” To speak to the admissions team, or to book a place on the next school open morning on 4 March, call 0118 918 7333 or email admissions@qas.org.uk (qas.org.uk)

Local heroes LA BRASSERIA MILANESE, W1U
Known for its array of buzzing eateries, Marylebone boasts some of the best in London. And often they come with bonus celeb spots. “This is a lovely Italian restaurant that fully embraces the special café culture that we have here in Marylebone Village, says Nick Poppe from Savills. “The al fresco dining with tables across the pavement at the top of the High Street is fun and lively, and the service is superb. One can often see local celebrities such as Rod Stewart and Jude Law enjoying a bite to eat.” 42 Marylebone High Street, W1U (020 7486 3753; labrasseria.com)
DELAMINA, W1U
LE RELAIS DE VENISE, W1U
Dexters’ James Staite recommends this popular restaurant, telling us it’s his favourite place for a spot of brunch. “Marylebone is a real foodie hotspot,” he says. “One of the best things about working here is trying out the area’s best restaurants. The husband and wife team who opened Strut & Cluck in Shoreditch are behind this Eastern Mediterranean kitchen. Inspired by their family heritage, you’ll find exotic dishes like green shakshuka and fried eggs on lamb shwarma. Everything is delicious.”
When it comes to grabbing a bite to eat in the vicinity, you won’t be short on choice in Marylebone. The neighbourhood boasts a variety of international fare. Aidan Coates from Hamptons recommends this lively French bistro, telling us it’s “a local institution with amazing steak on a first come, first served basis. They run the most basic menus of a walnut salad, followed by two helpings of steak and chips with their famous sauce, but its simplicity is its charm, with perfect food, great atmosphere and service.”

Harley Street has become recognised globally as a hub for the very best private healthcare. Doctors began moving to the prestigious thoroughfare in the mid-1800s, choosing the area because of the quality housing, the central location as well as the accessibility to major train stations. Perhaps one of the most famous healthcare professionals to work here was Florence Nightingale, who was Superintendent at the Establishment for Gentlewomen at No. 1 Harley Street from 1853 73

From our agents
Charlie Rosling, Winkworth
“2021 was a year of two halves for Marylebone sales. But I’m pleased to report that international buyers have started to return and the domestic market has also galvanized into a position in which buyers and sellers want to get on with their lives. As for 2022, my hunch is a strong start to Q1, as buyers wish to secure a purchase before multiple rate rises.”
MEET THE LOCALS
Marielle Wyse
Founder and owner, Wyse London Marylebone Village was an obvious choice for my first ever flagship store, Wyse London; I love how there is a real spotlight on independent shops here. I think it’s one of the most interesting high streets in London – a hub of dining hotspots, boutiques and cafés – and it’s where I personally enjoy doing all my shopping and browsing. I have so many local favourites that it’s hard to choose just a few to talk about… I’m a big fan of the newly opened Hagen on Marylebone High Street. It’s a Danish espresso bar concept born out of Copenhagen and founded in London; their coffee is simply incredible. For interiors, I love the distinctive pieces from the Conran Shop on the High Street. I always feel inspired in VV Rouleaux on Marylebone Lane – it is the ultimate destination for designers and creatives, the mixture of colours and textures on display is a visual masterpiece. I love Diptyque for scented candles, Aesop for hand soap and The Organic Pharmacy for all things beauty and skincare. One of my favourite places is La Fromagerie on the foodie’s paradise Moxon Street; easily one of the finest cheesemongers in London, it is home to a maturing cellar, a dedicated walk-in cheese room and a cheese specialist, who is on hand to help with choosing the right cheese for your occasion. For dining, I love Ottolenghi on Marylebone Lane, and you can’t go wrong with Le Relais de Venise on Marylebone Lane; they serve just one main course, steak frites, and it is incredible.

“Marylebone is a village in the heart of a metropolis, a perfect combination of old and new: beautiful Georgian architecture and brand-new builds. Pricing-wise it’s incredibly varied. From street to street, property to property, and from new builds commanding prices in excess of £4,000 per sq ft, to one bed flats in older mansion blocks which achieve far less, it’s not one size fits all, which adds to the charm and diversity of the area.”

were as desirable as Marylebone’s – with its chic and glittering roll call of boutiques, bookshops and concept stores, it’s a fine place for a spot of window shopping
“Marylebone is a fashionable area attracting both domestic and international buyers. It boasts a village feel despite being a stone’s throw from the world-renowned shopping of Oxford Street. Further to this, it’s exceptionally well located, close to both Regent’s and Hyde Park, offering an oasis of greenery in the midst of the city. You’ll find everything from cobbled mews houses to portered mansion blocks, not to mention period conversions and luxury developments.”

Getting the best from every pupil
Photography by Birgit Tabbarah
Shona Colaço, headteacher at Knightsbridge School discusses the benefits of academically non-selective admissions, and explains why the school uses this policy “To understand the reasons for the way we select pupils it is important to consider the bigger picture. Society, and the world of work have changed, and continue to do so at a pace – accelerated by Covid and the ways in which we had to adapt to stay safe while productive and connected through the pandemic. Our children are unlikely to look forward to, or perhaps value, a job for life, and employers are increasingly stepping away from recruiting solely based on academic performance. We are encouraged as individuals to be more focused on integrating work and life in a meaningful way so that we can remain independent and fulfilled, and traditional ways of learning are becoming increasingly obsolete as access to information becomes easier. Within that landscape it makes sense to look not only at what we are teaching and how, but also which pupils we are inviting to learn with us. To be happy and successful in life beyond school pupils need to be presented with opportunities for collaboration, creativity, exploration and risk taking so that they can
understand what they need to progress and do so while being supported to remain open minded, resilient, caring and compassionate. Although the scope to achieve this certainly exists within a traditional academic model, and with the very brightest pupils, it is not only the most able who can (or who should be given the chance to) make the most of an engaging and broad curriculum or a diverse extra-curricular offering. Pupils with different skills or ways of thinking need to have their chance to shine. By having small classes and a high staff to pupil ratio we are able to devote time to the individual; to knowing their strengths as well as the areas they may need to develop; to support their educational journey and to truly embrace diversity of approach and thinking. While some of our curricular offering will be exactly what you would expect to see, we also, for example, build the fundamentals of economics and business into our senior curriculum within Life Perspectives. Our aim is to ensure that the entrepreneurial mind will not only then be able to imagine products but will be able to manufacture, price, market and sell them successfully. Speakers

from the world of business provide mentoring during the Entrepreneur Competition and provide insight and inspiration through a programme of weekly talks. Our older pupils are given opportunities to undertake independent, open-ended, and sometimes self-selected tasks. They have the support of a mentor and integrate the use of resources, including technology, as they need so that they can be prepared for university style learning and the need to self-motivate and organise in their life beyond KS. As an educator, I struggle with a system that can allow a child to be labelled not good enough at 11. Or one which means that hours of tutoring can be the only way forward. Our approach to selecting pupils for KS, and working with our KS pupils is intended to be kind, supportive and focused entirely on getting the very best from each individual.” Contact registrar@knightsbridgeschool.com. 67 Pont Street, SW1X (020 7590 9000; knightsbridgeschool.com)

n very recent inspection reports both St. Anthony’s School for Boys and St. Anthony’s School for Girls were awarded the highest scores in each category. Children from both schools progress to some of the most highly sought-after schools in the country. More importantly, the boys and girls of St. Anthony’s flourish in an environment which values each of them as unique and wonderful; every child is loved first and foremost for who they are, rather than what they do. Catholic spirituality is the golden thread that unites both schools and provides a context to their respective Wellbeing programmes. Pupils are confident, happy and proud to be part of their school community. St. Anthony’s Nursery, for boys and girls aged 2 1⁄2 to 4, officially opened in September last year, located in Ivy House, the home of St. Anthony’s School for Girls. It has seen significant interest from families seeking an environment that is nurturing and kind – rooted in the ethos of both the boys’ and girls’ schools – and academically enriching at the same time. The curriculum is informed by the EYFS (Early Years) programme and is designed to encourage curiosity, interaction, independence and, perhaps above all, a love of learning.
The pre-reception programme aims to prepare the children to be “school ready”. Teachers at both schools have worked hard to produce a coherent curriculum with a key focus on building knowledge, skills, and confidence so that the children will be equipped to transfer to full-time schooling when the time comes. Children who attend the nursery will be stronger communicators and self-assured as learners. Such basics will be the basis for growth throughout their school career and indeed beyond. An exciting addition to the pre-reception provision is St. Anthony’s Plus, a pre-nursery programme for children from birth to three years, which is about to launch. This has been carefully designed to support a child’s cognitive, social and emotional development, and to prepare them for the transition to nursery. It consists of a carefully curated digital home learning package, a parenting programme and a weekly face-to-face teacher-led session to give children the best possible start to their education. Parents interested in learning more about the Plus programme, the nursery, or reception at either school are invited to get in touch – the staff look forward to sharing their vision and answering questions regarding this exciting new development. Priority entry is given over to pupils transferring from the nursery into reception at either school. stanthonysprep.org.uk/early-years/nursery/

THOUGHT
Let’s get pastoral
T
he pandemic has taken its toll on the nation’s teenagers. In a study by the Mental Health Foundation and Swansea University, 27 per cent said they had felt ‘nervous, anxious or on edge’ on most or nearly all the days of the previous fortnight. Another 26 per cent had had trouble concentrating and 32 per cent had struggled with sleep. For Sarah Clark, headmistress of North London Collegiate School, these impacts have been the natural consequence of an extended period of uncertainty. “The pandemic also removed the usual ways young people would meet and be physically present with each other,” she says. “That’s definitely had an impact globally, and I think we’ll see the knock-on effects for some time.” NLCS’s long-standing focus on pastoral care has helped students to cope. “People tend to see schools like ours as highly pressured,” says Sarah. “But it’s our pastoral care that enables pupils to become happy, well-balanced adults who can contribute fresh ideas to society.”
Before the pandemic, the school provided at least two form tutors per class and ran weeks focused on wellbeing, kindness and friendship, among other initiatives. During the school closures, this expanded to include daily contact with each pupil, extra relaxation and sports sessions – even a Great Sewing Bee. Parents were supported, too, with talks on how to manage their children’s anxiety at home. “Children’s home life is a big part of how they’re feeling, so working closely with our parents in this way has a big knock-on effect on our students,” explains Sarah. As part of that engagement, NLCS gives its parents access to Tooled-up Education, an online bank of evidence-based resources on all aspects of parenting, education and family life. If you don’t have access to this kind of resource, and need advice on helping teenagers through their challenges, Sarah suggests listening more than you speak. “Come to the conversation with an open mind,” she says. “Don’t make assumptions, or be shocked by what your child might say. Take it seriously, offer love and support, and seek help if you need it. Schools are brilliant places to turn to – we’re experts in adolescent mental health and wellbeing, and we’re always here to help.” (020 8952 0912; nlcs.org.uk)
MEET THE HEAD
Richard Tillett Queen’s College
What attracted you to the school? As a history teacher, I was initially intrigued by the extraordinary place Queen’s occupies in the history of women’s education in this country. Founded in 1848, it was the first school to offer academic qualifications to women. Nearly 175 years later, that pioneering and ground-breaking spirit is still evident in our forward-looking approach to educating young women to achieve their full potential. How would you sum it up in a sentence? Queen’s is a place where every individual thrives; I believe we’re now one of the most high-achieving, diverse and forward-looking girls’ schools in London. What makes it different? Our primary focus on pastoral care is a real differentiator; it’s the foundation of our academic success. After all, if a teenage girl isn’t happy, she simply won’t achieve her academic potential. Our exam results, at both GCSE and A-level, have been on a strong upward trajectory for the past five years, so this approach clearly works. I also love the size of the school; it’s small enough that I can know every child and most of the families. If someone is struggling, they’ll be noticed and supported, and there can be no ‘missing middle’. But we’re also big enough to offer a huge amount of extra-curricular opportunities; dozens of music ensembles and sports teams, plays, over 80 clubs… Everyone can find opportunities here. How would you describe the atmosphere? Kind, caring and busy – with a palpable sense of community.

WELL PLAYED At Hawkesdown House School, an independent preparatory school and nursery in leafy Kensington, the curriculum is enriched through teamwork, fun and sportsmanship Hawkesdown House is a school with a strong voice and an adventurous spirit. High academic standards are matched with creativity, flair and imagination in a broad curriculum, which has been designed to challenge and inspire. Excellent teaching encourages a love of knowledge and independent thinking. Sport, music and drama are all carefully integrated into the school week. Beyond the academic rigour of the core subjects, much emphasis is placed on extracurricular activities – all pupils from Year 1 learn judo, all pupils from Year 2 are taught chess and all pupils learn fencing from Year 3. This enrichment of the curriculum provides a productive break from academic work, while helping children to build their skills outside the classroom. Research confirms the considerable benefits of extracurricular activities in enhancing a sense of belonging and helping students to develop positive feelings towards their education, reducing their odds of failure. At Hawkesdown this is evident in the excellent results and in the open, thoughtful and happy children. Sarah Gillam, Head at Hawkesdown House School tells us: “Children respond positively to learning when it is made relevant and engaging and where creativity is nurtured.” Hawkesdown House is a dynamic school where people are kind, considerate and capable and where children can start their school lives happily, making early friends with confidence. The School has high academic standards and inspires and challenges minds and the imagination. Staff know each child and understand what is important for them. Both parents and children are fiercely loyal to this Hawkesdown philosophy. To arrange a school tour, call 020 7727 9090 or email admin@hawkesdown.co.uk (hawkesdown.co.uk)

Community spirit Norwood supporters, staff and the wider community spurred the UK’s oldest Jewish charity on to raising £3.3 million over 36 hours as part of its #TogetherWeAre campaign. The fundraiser was Norwood’s first-ever matched giving campaign and was held in place of the charity’s annual dinner. The charity, which supports people with learning disabilities and autism, and children and families facing challenges, exceeded its target of £2.6 million following a bonus fundraising round, which will help Norwood continue to adapt its service provision to meet the community’s changing needs. Speaking at the end of the two-day campaign, Norwood’s chief executive Dr Beverley Jacobson paid tribute to the “incredible” support the charity had received from its existing donors
and the wider community alike. “The #TogetherWeAre campaign was conceived to celebrate the relationships at the heart of Norwood, which are so important in enabling and empowering the people we support to live meaningful and fulfilling lives. That sense of togetherness has never been more apparent than over the last 36 hours and we simply couldn’t have achieved this without the support of those most intimate with our fantastic organisation – the people we support and their families, our staff and volunteers as well as our wonderful donors. For that, we are incredibly grateful.” Aston Chase’s Mark Pollack has been fundraising for Norwood for over 25 years. Visit charityextra.com/ norwood/markpollack for information and to donate

What are the benefits of living in an urban village? To me, an urban village is an established local residential community with access to green spaces and local boutiques. It’s wonderful to have all the conveniences of transport, shopping and restaurants on your doorstep, while still being able to enjoy a residential environment consisting of local people. This sense of pride and community spirit creates the ‘urban village’ atmosphere that makes the areas of Marylebone, St. John’s Wood, Maida Vale and Hampstead so sought after. Ben Curtis, Winkworth

I love London because… it’s an amazing city but within that, Notting Hill must be one of the best areas. There are so many incredible residential roads with beautiful architecture, large communal gardens, boutique shops and restaurants. I just have to look out of the office windows down Westbourne Grove to get a real sense of the surroundings. The amazing pastel-coloured buildings, tree-lined roads and a variety of shops and delis. It’s a privilege to work here. First London home? I lived on the top floor above an estate agency on Lancaster Road with a little balcony. A great place to watch the Notting Hill Carnival from! Best type of client? I’ve worked with some brilliant clients during my time in W11 and W2. I really like the ones who call just for a catch up or a bit of advice. That, to me, is a proper agent-client relationship. Favourite eatery? There’s a place called The Good Plot on Westbourne Grove that I really like. Really friendly staff, great service and they do a very nice coffee! Where do you go for head space in the city? Holland Park. If you enter through the Holland Park entrance, next to the Italian Embassy, there’s a lovely woodland walk that takes you to the Kyoto Garden, and then you have the amazing gardens next to the café. What’s your hidden talent? I’m a self-taught exterior designer. I’ve landscaped my own garden and my wife tells me I’ve done a very good job! Period property or new-build? Period. Creature comfort? My wood burning stove with its mini oven above it.

Settle, Harrow Road, NW10 £POA Welcome to Settle. Kensal Green’s brand new development of nine 1 and 2 bedroom apartments beautifully constructed and designed by renowned developers Artform, architects Gpad and interior designers Scenesmith. Drawing inspiration from the beautiful arched apertures along the façade of Settle, Artform wished to create homely apartments with fluid boundaries between inside and out. Designers Scenesmith have weaved these sweeping forms into each apartment with arches, a prominent feature also inspired by the neighbouring church.

A new year, a new home? Professional property finder Deborah Stanton discusses why the early months of 2022 could be the best time of year to purchase your next property For many people the New Year is a special time filled with resolutions and hopes for the year ahead. It’s often also a time when plans are hatched for moving house. Property portals experience some of their highest levels of visitor traffic over the Christmas break and at the start of the year; a trend that keeps rising every year with millions flocking to websites such as Zoopla and Rightmove on Boxing Day alone. As activity in the property market returns in the first weeks of 2022 buyers should be alert to the fact that waiting for the spring market could mean they may miss some of the best buying opportunities of the year. Ahead of the crowd Many people incorrectly assume that the property market does not really offer much in the way of opportunities until the spring and may therefore hold back with moving plans for several months. Whilst this assumption may have held true several years ago, there is overwhelming evidence to suggest that this is no longer the case. The UK property market has bucked almost all traditional trends over the past 18 months, meaning historically quiet periods have been some of the busiest on record. Despite the end of the temporary reduction in applicable
not listed on portals or agents websites, meaning buyers must actively be in regular contact with selling agents to ensure their interests are registered. In many cases off-market opportunities come from varying sources, whether it is an introduction from an architect or a wealth manager. It is a buying agent’s relationships with all manner of local industry professionals that often gains access to exclusive properties.

Stamp Duty Land Tax, the numbers of buyers actively searching for properties has remained high. This is particularly evident in the prime London market where competition to secure property is heated due to the severe shortage of properties available to buy. The hidden market At this time of year, many sellers open discussions with agents and explore the possibility of selling their homes. The early months of the year can be some of the busiest in terms of ‘off-market’ activity, as discrete sellers explore whether there is a sales opportunity available to them, without the need for a full-scale marketing campaign. With off-market property sales it is ‘who you know’ that matters. These opportunities are
Buying with confidence in 2022 Despite the New Year offering fresh opportunities, there are nonetheless fresh challenges for buyers wanting to move in 2022. The often-conflicting data in press coverage, and now quite complex localised markets, can leave buyers confused and unable to have confidence when finding a property. A full understanding of what’s really going on in a local property market, together with the right connections are pre-requisite to making a well informed and successful property purchase this year. If you are thinking of moving in 2022 and would like further information on how Garrington can provide guidance and assurance, and save you time and money when finding the right property, please do get in touch without obligation.
If you would like to learn more about how Garrington can help save you time and money please contact Deborah Stanton for a free, no obligation initial discussion 020 7099 2773
