What is stress and how can we beat it? We ask the experts
THE WELLBEING ISSUE
OUR AGENTS
Beat the January blues…
W
e’re starting the year as we mean to go on – this issue is all about doing things that will make us happier or healthier in 2024, starting with our special feature, which this month addresses mental health. With the help of the experts, we look at the reasons behind stress, and explore the self-help techniques we can use to reduce it. Of course, there’s no denying that moving our bodies can improve our mood, as well as helping us to get into better shape – if you’re starting a new fitness regime this January, we reveal the kit to help you do it in style in our shopping section. For cover star Millie Gibson, the new year brings a new job and a new home, we chat to her about all things Doctor Who, and discover her take on interior design. With a FOLLOW US ON new flat to furnish, she might want to check out our interiors feature: @londonfabricmag offering inspiration aplenty for those planning a new look, it explores @londonfabricproperty the trends that we will be seeing in the home this year. Or she might take a tip from one daring homeowner, whose colourful house gives fabricmagazine.co.uk new meaning to January blues – see for yourself in our At Home With feature. Here’s to finding joy in your own special way in 2024. Liz Skone James liz@hattoncollective.com

ON YOUR MARKS
Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or taking your first steps on the running track, Mr Akash Patel, Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon offers these tips to help elevate your training and ensure you’re running towards your fitness goals with confidence Mr Akash Patel, Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at St John & St Elizabeth Hospital specialises in hip and knee disorders. He has a keen interest in sports, exercise, and surgical education. A runner himself, he has completed the London Marathon and is passionate about the sport. Running offers numerous health benefits; including improved cardiovascular fitness, weight management and stress reduction. However, like any physical activity, running can increase the risk of injury. As a keen runner, Mr Patel understands the benefits versus the risks and applies this knowledge to optimise performance and reduce hip and/or knee problems. HE OFFERS THESE TIPS FOR RUNNERS: Always warm up and cool down Warming up prepares your muscles and reduces the risk of injury; stretching the hamstrings, quadriceps, gluteal and calf muscles is key. When warming up, you should focus on dynamic (rather than static) stretching. This includes hip circles, lunges, high knees and squats. Static stretching after a run helps to increase blood flow to the muscles, which in turn boosts muscle repair. Gentle stretching will also help improve your range of motion, leaving you less susceptible to muscle strains and overuse injuries. Static stretches include seated butterfly, knee to chest and head to knee forward bend. Hydrate Stay hydrated before, during and after your run to maintain energy levels and prevent dehydration. You don’t need to chug litres, sipping a small quantity of water every 15 minutes will help your body better absorb fluids. Gradually progress Don’t push too hard too fast. Gradually increase your mileage and intensity to avoid overtraining. If you’re new to running, start with a 10-minute run and gradually build up the distance over time. Rest and recover Give your body time to recover. Rest days are crucial for injury prevention and performance improvement. 32 | FABRIC MAGAZINE | January 2024
23 Fabric-JAN24-Advertorial_St John and St Elizabeth_1p.indd 32
Add variety Unbalanced training regimes with too much focus on cardio and too little on strength, stability, and stretching can lead to overuse injuries. Incorporate strength training exercises to build a strong foundation and prevent imbalances. Listen to your body Pay attention to any pain or discomfort. It’s essential to address issues early to prevent more severe injuries. Remember that everyone’s needs are different, so adapt these tips to your specific goals and abilities. Enlisting the support of a personal trainer or physiotherapist who can demonstrate correct technique and create a personalised development plan is always worthwhile. Words by Liz Skone James Photography by Alex Beer Styling by Sarah-Rose Harrison Hair by Chad Maxwell Make up by Min Sandhu Shot on location at Montcalm East Every year Millie Gibson writes down her New Year’s resolutions in a little notebook, referring back to them a year later to tick off the ones she accomplished before making new ones for the coming year. Two years ago, aged 17 and playing Coronation Street’s Kelly Neelan, she wrote down: ‘Find a job after Corrie’. Little did she know that not only would she succeed, but that she would bag perhaps one of the most famous roles on British television. “Looking back, a year on, I was like, oh my God, I can tick that off! It was just like I had manifested it in my little book,” she laughs. On her last day filming on the iconic cobbles in September 2022, her agent phoned to check how she was feeling. “I said: ‘Oh I’m a bit down – it’s really weird saying bye to everyone’. And he just said: ‘Well this will cheer you up, we’ve got an audition through for Doctor Who’s companion.’” She recalls, happily. “I sort of said, ‘Oh, this’ll be a laugh – first one to do after Corrie’. But I ended up getting a recall after my self-tape, and that was for a chemistry read with Ncuti Gatwa in London, Russell T Davies was there too, and Phil Collinson, the producer.” She has, she says, never felt so nervous ahead of an audition. “Usually in auditions I go in quite calm and quite chill, but this one I was shaking,” she admits. “I was in the Caffè Nero opposite overthinking everything, and I remember Russell had posted on his Instagram saying something like ‘Very exciting Saturday’ with a picture of the room that they were all in. And I thought, oh my God, I’m going to be in there soon…” How did she control the nerves, I wonder. “I think they go as soon as you enter the room,” she tells me. “You can, you know, build up and build up and build up in your mind, and then as soon as you enter the room it’s like, OK time for work brain. I think it’s what everyone does when they’re nervous, you have to kind of just go into a sort of trance, where you just switch your work brain on and just do what you are best at. But everyone in that room made me feel so calm and relaxed, and I remember being in the waiting room and just hearing Ncuti’s laugh, and I was like, there he is! So, yeah, I felt very at ease once I entered, and then I just did my thing, and Ncuti is such a beautiful actor to bounce off: it was so easy in a way.” What wasn’t easy was the subsequent wait for news – it was about a month before she got the call to say she had been offered the job. “You kind of get yourself into lots of twists in your brain,” she admits. “It was excruciating, every time someone rang me, LUXURY LONDON LIVING
05 Fabric-JAN24-Interview_MillieGibson_4p.indd 35
I was like, ‘It’s them!’ And it wasn’t. It was just this nightmare! Through that whole month I had made sure that I was in the most appropriate place to hear the news, ideally at home by myself, so I could process it.” Of course, we all know what they say about the best laid plans – when the day came, she had just been for a spray tan. “I’m waiting for it to dry off, that’s when I hear,” she tells me, laughing at the memory. “I just remember trying not to cry it off, because it was fresh! I was in total disbelief; it was a crazy, crazy experience. My mum was picking me up from the spray tan appointment, and I got in the car, and I was like, ‘Don’t start the engine just yet, I’ve just got a bit of news…’ She immediately thought it was bad news, and I said, ‘No, no, it’s good, I’ve just heard back, and I’ve got the part!’.” Sworn to secrecy, she didn’t share the news with anybody else until it was revealed live on Children in Need a month or so later. I can’t imagine how she managed to keep such a big story under wraps. “Oh gosh, I think it was just easy, because I didn’t believe it myself,” she laughs. “And also, I think it helped that I wasn’t working anymore, so I was kind of at home digesting the news. And to be honest, my agent was just like, ‘Do not tell anyone or it could really jeopardise things’. I was like, yeah, you know what, I do want it to be a surprise; it will be worth it in the end.” It is perhaps not surprising that Millie found it hard to believe the news – the series, which celebrated its 60th anniversary late last year, has been recognised by Guinness World Records as the longest-running science-fiction television series in the world, as well as the ‘most successful’ science-fiction series of all time, based on its overall broadcast ratings, DVD and book sales, and iTunes traffic. Millie herself grew up watching the show and is a huge fan: “I used to watch the show with my dad all the time,” she tells me. “My personal doctor was Matt Smith – fans get really offended when I say that because it makes them feel old! But yeah, I used to watch it with my dad and my companion was Amy Pond. I just can’t believe I’ve got to a stage where I might be a little girl or a little boy’s companion too, so yeah, it’s a real, real honour.” The co-protagonist of the BBC series, the role of the companion is a vital component of the show’s stories across space and time. “In my eyes, I think it’s beautiful to see how each companion humanises the Doctor,” Millie explains, talking about the appeal of the role. “You’ll see how my companion, Ruby Sunday, does that to Ncuti’s Doctor. What’s also special is that the companions are the eyes into the Doctor’s world. And I think January 2024 | FABRIC MAGAZINE | 35

Interview / LIFESTYLE many of the Whovian fans really do want to be in the Doctor’s world – the idea of travelling in the TARDIS is just so exciting. So, to take on that role, it’s amazing.” At 19 she is the youngest ever Doctor’s companion, an achievement of which she is rightly proud. “It’s just crazy – an utter privilege,” she exclaims. “Sometimes it’s a case of older actors playing younger characters, so I think it’s really special that Ruby is my age. And you really see that on the screen, there’s this certain lovable, childlike energy about her, she’s just really fresh to the world; I’m really fond of her. And I think the Doctor and Ruby’s relationship is very different to what viewers will have seen before, in the sense that they’re kind of like two schoolgirls giggling and chatting and plotting, and yeah, they’re just the bestest of friends, and I think that’s such a beautiful thing to see on screen. Ruby is just so ready to enter the world, and I think it’s going be really exciting to see the journey she goes on with the Doctor.” While many of her contemporaries were heading off to university, Millie spent nine months shooting this latest series of Doctor Who in Cardiff. “It was a long one, I could have had a baby in that time!” She exclaims. “It was all a blur really. I did come home most weekends, but yeah, I had to move there by myself, and it was probably the weirdest uni experience anyone could ever have at my age – that’s how I kind of thought about it.” Did it feel intimidating walking onto set for the first time? “Oh my gosh, it was weird, especially because I didn’t have Ncuti for the first few months, because he was filming Sex Education,” she reveals. “So, there was a part of me that was like, is this even Doctor Who, am I even doing this right now? It just felt like a really cool drama that we were doing, and then as soon as Ncuti came on it was like, oh, OK! But yeah, just walking through the sets, and seeing them build the monsters, I was like, this is classic Doctor Who – they don’t use CGI, that’s what I’ve always loved about the show, they really bring the monsters to life. So yes, seeing all of those things was just surreal. And just being there really and taking Ruby Sunday in my stride.” It was certainly surreal – an experience like no other, but one which Millie wouldn’t change for the world. “It was so much fun!” She tells me. “I think there were days where we got used to the madness of the job, and then when other people came in to do scenes with us, they were like, ‘Oh wow, this is your job, this is what you do every day!’ And we were like, ‘Oh my God, I know!’ It was just the most fun, and yeah, we really had a crazy time. And the team was wonderful… honestly from the make up department, props department, costume, everyone… I could go on for hours listing; they were the most supportive, kind people. And in a heartbeat I would work with them all again.” I wonder if life has changed for Millie since taking the role? “Not yet,” she exclaims. “I’m kinda bracing myself for the show
to come out. This is like the calm before the storm really, because it’s not changed too much yet. I’m just kind of telling myself no pressure now, because it’s all going to come out soon!” Of course, coming from Coronation Street, Millie is used to being recognised. “When I played Kelly, it was nonstop,” she reveals. “I think because everyone watches Corrie, they see you as a kind of a friend, because they see you in their living room every night. In my experience people are usually lovely. Of course, there will always be one or two occasions where, you know, it’s not the nicest of experiences… it’ll be interesting to see how things will change when I get recognised as Ruby Sunday instead of Kelly. It’s going to be a weird shift, but I think what’s been so great up to now is how lovely the Whovian fandom is, and how supportive everyone’s been. I’m excited, and aware that it’s probably going to be a bit crazy for a few months. But I know that I’m very, very lucky in that respect.” It will be an exciting year, there is no doubt about that; I wonder what else is in store for Millie in 2024? “I think, now that the strike’s over, probably auditioning again, for parts, and seeing what’s out there,” she tells me. Having made her acting debut at the age of 14, playing the role of Indira in CBBC television series Jamie Johnson, she went on to appear in Love, Lies and Records, and Butterfly, before landing the part of troubled teen Kelly in Coronation Street, a role that saw her nominated for Best Actress at the Inside Soap Awards and brought her to the attention of Russell T Davies. For one so young, she has certainly held some big roles – so, what does she have her eyes on next? “Every year has seen such change for me, it’s hard to think what might come next. I’d like to play a villain…” she reveals. “If not that I think I’m really intrigued by biopic roles that you really need to research. I think that would be a great challenge. I don’t know, I think I’m just excited to see what’s to come.” And outside work, she has plenty to be excited about, too. “I’ve just recently bought a flat,” she tells me. “So, I’m looking forward to getting into my dream home. It doesn’t need work doing to it, it just needs furniture, and honestly, it’s the most stressful thing! I love Gustaf Westman – I’m obsessed with all his furniture, which is quite quirky, weird shapes. So, I was going to go with stuff like that, but now I’ve been looking at colours, I feel like I’m going to go for a bit more of a subtle aesthetic – I might mix it up a bit as the months go on. I have been making mood boards, to see if things go together, it’s just like, yeah… adulthood!” She laughs. Back to those New Year’s resolutions, what’s going on the list this year? “This year, I think to travel more,” she says, after a moment’s contemplation. “I really want to see more of the world – it’s a bit of a cliché answer that, isn’t it. And to maybe achieve something that I haven’t yet.” Let’s see what she can manifest in the little notebook this time. The new season of Doctor Who will be coming to the BBC in 2024
“I’m EXCITED, and aware that it’s probably going to be a bit CRAZY for a few months. But I know that I’m very, very LUCKY in that respect”

Part hotel, part east London creative hub, this unique Autograph Collection hotel champions the creativity of its neighbourhood You only need look at Montcalm East to know that this hotel is anything but ordinary. Set on City Road, opposite Moorfields Eye Hospital, the distinctive 26-storey diamond-shaped building was designed by Squire and Partners in tribute to the 1980s op art of Tate Modern luminary, Bridget Riley. As light hits its shimmering, shark-grey façade, it almost appears to shape shift, tricking the eyes – which is apt, given its neighbour. Visual surprises abound inside, too; the hotel reopened after an extensive refurbishment in May 2021, revealing a stunning new look that takes inspiration from the rich artistic heritage of the area. Photography is a particular focus – interiors by Shoreditch-based studio Blacksheep include clever nods to the theme, including optical lighting, projections and RGB colours. The team also worked with art consultant Anne Trouillet Rogers at Culture A to create an experience that celebrates London-made artworks throughout the public spaces and 288 guestrooms. Anne selected artists and makers whose work pays homage to the Capital through a variety of mediums. Highlights include a street-art-inspired textile by London-based print artist Lisa King and a large-scale, hand-painted illustrative mural by Hackney resident, Carlos Penalver. The hotel’s ground floor and mezzanine lounges act as an exhibition space for both permanent and rotating collections, curated with the help of critically acclaimed pop art specialists Proud Galleries. Meanwhile, a unique collaboration with Ravensbourne University sees the hotel hosting a photographer in residence programme in their state-of-the-art Photo Studio. Emerging artists can make full use of the space to develop their portfolio and showcase their work, while hotel guests are encouraged to drop by for expert advice 38 | FABRIC MAGAZINE | January 2024

Currently in residence is Reuben Lee, while past names include Harry Adams, Dimitar Maleshkov, Joe O’Sullivan and John Steven Martinez. You can get a taste of life through a lens with the Photo Lab experience, which is bookable for private groups: in a space on the ground floor or mezzanine, guests can sip on limited edition cocktails and capture the evening’s memorable moments, before printing their photos using the studio’s smartphone printers. Londoners are just as welcome at Montcalm East as hotel guests, not least at the gorgeous spa, Bokeh, where memberships for locals are available. With its pool, it offers a welcome break from city life. And a full range of relaxing and rejuvenating treatments are on offer here, too, through partnerships with CBD brand OTO, Grown Alchemist, Temple Spa, SkinCeuticals and OPI. If food and drink are more your scene, you’ll love the new restaurant – Marlowe is inspired by the legendary playwright, Christopher Marlowe. Boasting a casual café for all-day dining, a sophisticated restaurant and a vibrant cocktail bar, the space promises something for everyone. On offer is a modern British menu, with meat sourced from small family-owned farms specialising in heritage breeds and responsibly sourced fish from day boats and ports along the South Coast. NO STRESS
THE WELLBEING ISSUE
We all want to be happier and healthier, but we can’t truly achieve this without looking after our mental health. We ask the experts to explain the reasons behind stress, and teach us how best to manage it
Becky’s dos and don’ts of stress management:
If you suffer from stress, you’re not alone, according to a survey by Mental Health Foundation, 74 per cent of UK adults have been so stressed at some point over the last year that they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope*. And CIPHR’s Workplace Stress survey reveals that seven per cent of UK adults feel stressed every single day**. When long-term stress becomes overwhelming, its affects are felt mentally, emotionally and physically. We asked Dr Becky Spelman, psychologist and founder of The Private Therapy Clinic to explain why we feel stress, and advise us on how best to manage it. She tells us: “In short, stress is a natural response to demanding or challenging situations in life. It is the body’s way of preparing for a perceived threat, commonly known as the ‘fight-or-flight’ response. Although stress can be helpful in certain situations, chronic or excessive stress can have negative impacts on our bodies and overall wellbeing. Physiologically, stress triggers the release of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which increase heart rate, blood pressure, and the release of glucose for energy. In the short term, this can enhance focus and alertness, but prolonged exposure to stress can lead to various health issues. It can weaken the immune system, disrupt sleep patterns, and increase the risk of developing conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and mental health disorders like anxiety and depression.” (theprivatetherapyclinic.co.uk/issues/stress-management) * mentalhealth.org.uk/about-us/news/survey-stressed-nation-UKoverwhelmed-unable-to-cope ** ciphr.com/workplace-stress-statistics 40 | FABRIC MAGAZINE | January 2024

Do be aware of your stress triggers and how it affects you. Understanding your stressors can help you develop effective coping strategies. Do practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, or mindfulness to stay relaxed and reduce stress levels. Do maintain a healthy lifestyle. Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. This is good for your overall wellbeing and can improve your resilience to stress. Do organise your life effectively. Prioritise the most important tasks, delegate wherever possible, and break larger tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. This will stop you from feeling overwhelmed and will reduce stress levels. Do build a strong support system. Friends, family and support groups can help to alleviate stress by listening, helping and spending quality time with you. Don’t rely on unhealthy coping mechanisms like excessive alcohol or drug use, overeating, or withdrawing from social interactions. This may provide temporary relief but can worsen stress in the long run. Don’t neglect self-care – taking care of your physical and mental wellbeing is essential. Make time for activities you love and that help you to relax. Don’t strive for perfection – this can create unnecessary stress, so accept that nobody is perfect and focus on your personal progress rather than on achieving flawless outcomes. LUXURY LONDON LIVING

Wellbeing / LIFESTYLE DEVELOPING HABITS THAT HELP YOU TO COPE
What can I use it for?
Breathwork can be used for a wide range of purposes, including stress and anxiety reduction, relaxation, improved mental clarity, emotional release, increased energy levels and enhanced overall wellbeing. It is also used as a tool for personal development, mindfulness and spiritual exploration.
As Dr Spelman recommends, employing good coping mechanisms is essential; we take a look at a couple of the things you can do to help effectively manage stress
Poppy Delbridge, best-selling author of Tapping In and creator of the app Rapid Tapping recommends tapping – but what’s it all about? She answers our questions
How does it work?
Breathwork operates on the principle that intentional changes in breathing patterns can influence the autonomic nervous system, which regulates involuntary bodily functions. By consciously altering the depth, rhythm, and pace of breathing, you can shift from a state of stress and tension to one of relaxation and balance. This process can impact physiological functions, such as heart rate and blood pressure, as well as promote emotional release and mental clarity.
How did you discover the benefits of tapping?
Originally through my parents and then I used it when I needed to create greater calm and direction in my life after becoming a single parent with a huge career in media television. It was a lifesaver: I became addicted in a healthy way to the stress and anxiety relieving benefits. I realised I was using it to manifest my goals and I decided to change careers and become a coach.
How is it performed?
How does tapping work?
It has roots in acupuncture – but there are no needles! You tap your face at certain energy points that are known to reduce tension and increase energy to enhance vitality, and by voicing affirmations and statements at the same time, you create the change in mindset and positive outlook that it is known for.
What is Rapid Tapping?
I use both traditional techniques as a practitioner and my own approach to it, Rapid Tapping – which is a self-tapping method designed to combine the clinically proven emotional benefits of tapping with ancient energy techniques that increase daily vitality – as well as focusing on the face-tapping beauty benefits.
What can I use Rapid Tapping for?
Primarily to ease stress, anxiety and overwhelm, you can also use it to eradicate unhelpful limiting beliefs and bring relaxation, energy and emotional wellbeing – especially if you don’t sleep well, or you are spinning a lot of plates. Additionally, it has been designed with dermatologists to reduce skin stress and eye bags using lymphatic drainage, and to promote collagen production.
How is it performed?
Either with a practitioner like myself or by yourself, using the on-the-go audios and video tutorials available on the app.
How long does it take to see results?
It’s called the ‘instant mood booster’ by A list clients for good reason! You’ll see a change straightaway and the scoring system we use before and after means you can log your progress and change your state of being in just a few minutes. To find out more about Poppy, see poppydelbridge.com
Poppy describes Rapid Tapping as an ‘instant mood booster’
Breathwork techniques vary, but a common approach involves adopting focused, rhythmic breathing patterns. Examples include diaphragmatic breathing, conscious connected breathing, and specific patterns like the Wim Hof Method. Sessions are often guided, either by a trained facilitator or through online recorded instructions. Whether conducted in one-on-one sessions or groups, participants typically engage in the practice in a comfortable, quiet space, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the experience.
How long does it take to see results?
The timeframe can vary among individuals. Some people may see immediate benefits, such as increased relaxation and reduced stress, after a single session. Long-term and more profound effects, such as improved mental wellbeing and increased resilience to stress often become apparent with regular practice over weeks or months. Consistency is key, and individuals may find that incorporating breathwork into their routine has lasting positive effects on both their physical and mental health. Before I started doing breathwork I was stressed, anxious, and caught up in overworking and people-pleasing. Through having a daily breathwork practice, everything has changed. It’s not only allowed me to connect to my true self, gaining clarity on what I want in life, but it has also allowed me to become a calmer, more grounded, and, most importantly, genuinely happy person. Breathwork changed my life and I’m on a mission to share it with the rest of the world. Connect with Sarah on Instagram @iamsarahhyde, or for more details about her practice and her upcoming workshops, see iamsarahhyde.com
For Sarah Hyde, founder of Breathe with Sarah, breathwork has a profound effect on stress, she tells us about the benefits of the practice How did you discover the benefits of breathwork?
I was seeking a way to cope during a challenging phase of burnout, work-related stress and anxiety, and decided to join a dedicated week-long breathwork retreat. In the first 45-minutes I discovered more about myself than I had through years of therapy, yoga and sound healing. It sparked a personal journey of exploration that led me to my formal training. Recognising its incredible impact, I felt a strong desire to share this gift.
What is breathwork?
It’s a wellness practice that centres around consciously adjusting breathing patterns to access a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional benefits. Mindful breathing techniques and exercises help to promote relaxation, reduce stress, enhance mental clarity, and ultimately improve your overall wellbeing. At its core is the belief that the way you breathe significantly influences your mental and physical state, and by adjusting your breath intentionally, you can positively impact your health and emotions. And the great part is that it’s accessible to everyone, is totally free, and you can experience the benefits in seconds. LUXURY LONDON LIVING

BEAUTY
Too good to go
If wanting to live more sustainably is a priority, you’ll love Boop. It is estimated that an incredible 90 million beauty products are being thrown away each year in the UK. But that’s not all down to consumers – ten per cent of this wastage occurs within the supply chain thanks to things like damaged packaging, customer returns and printing errors, and over six per cent is due to over production. Boop launched late last year, an online store that gives a second chance to imperfect, excess and obsolete beauty products, by offering consumers big savings on their favourite mid- to high-end beauty brands across cosmetics, make up, skincare, haircare, bath and body, tools, perfume, supplements, and home fragrance. Think brands like Antipodes organic skincare, Bouclème hair products and Aromatherapy Associates. Some products may have imperfect packaging, others might feature an old formulation, but all products are safe to use, with each and every product on the site subject to a rigorous quality control check. Founder, Yasmine Amr tells us she’d love to: “create The Outnet for beauty.” Adding: “Consumers and brands are becoming far more conscious of sustainability and don’t really care if their product is a discontinued formulation, doesn’t look perfect or displays old branding – as long as it works.” boopbeauty.co.uk
WELLBEING
TIME FOR YOU
As illustrated by our special feature this month, we’re more aware than ever before about the importance of balancing physical health with mental wellbeing. If you’ve vowed to dedicate more time to yourself in 2024, counteracting active endeavours with some serious self-care, this brand-new partnership between the gorgeous Lanesborough Club and Spa and award-winning plant-based spa brand GROUND Wellbeing couldn’t have come at a better time. A spa therapist with over 25 years’ experience, Peigin Crowley launched GROUND Wellbeing in 2020 in response to a desire to facilitate intuitive self-care rituals that would help clients to feel more balanced and aligned, rather than simply pampered. All of her products and rituals have been designed to address issues such as anxiety, insomnia, hormone fluctuations and gut health. The Lanesborough’s luxurious new signature ritual begins with a consultation and an opportunity
to choose the GROUND Wellbeing luxury oil best suited to your mood and needs. For me it is the Uplifting Body Oil, an energising blend of grapefruit and coriander seed with sweet almond oil and calendula. The massage itself starts with some guided breathwork; as I inhale the divine scent of the oil, I can already feel my stresses melting away. The skilled therapist goes on to use firm, meditative strokes to work her way around my entire body, including my scalp, pausing to concentrate on niggles and knots as she goes. It is utterly restorative, and I leave feeling nourished and cosseted; and I feel more balanced over the following days. It comes highly recommended. LSJ The new Lanesborough Signature Massage with GROUND Wellbeing is available as a 60-minute (£190), 90-minute (£220) or 120-minute (£300) ritual. Ouronyx
This luxurious, doctor-led clinic is redefining the medical beauty space as the first global destination focused exclusively on non-surgical facial treatments. So what exactly is on offer? Words by Katie Hutley
LUXURY LONDON LIVING
08 Fabric-JAN24-StyleNews_2p.indd 43
It’s said that there’s nothing new under the sun and, having been lucky enough to see inside some of London’s most prestigious aesthetic clinics in my time, I would have been inclined to agree; each has their point of difference and area of excellence, sure, but to offer something that really feels different – a tall order. And then along came Ouronyx. Tucked away on St. James’ Street, the entrance from street to reception felt, at first, more corporate than I was expecting – to the point where I even wondered if I’d got the right place. But once I was shown through to the clinic proper – aha, the penny dropped. More akin to a private members’ club than a clinic, the space is vast, light-filled, serene and so very stylish… bedecked in Italian marble and warm wood panelling, custom artworks (I adored the butterfly installation that literally flutters as you pass it on the stairs), and a bar where one would normally expect a reception desk to be. This mission to provide something unique extends way beyond the surface level. Their philosophy blends psychology, analytic technology and a ‘less is always more’ approach to treatment; indeed, the services on offer here are limited compared to elsewhere – no medical-grade facials, no micro-needling – simply, an injectables-only approach to skin improvement that has been carefully, mindfully agreed upon between you and your doctor. The process starts with a surprisingly in-depth psychological evaluation, with the aim of the exercise being to formulate a treatment plan that works from a personality point of view, as well as a physical one; meaning your feelings around what you want to achieve, how you’d like to look and how boldly (or not) you wish to go, are just as important as what your face itself is saying. After completing said questionnaire upstairs in the lounge area, I’m led downstairs to the hub of the clinic – another beautifully considered space, this time with living walls and curved architecture, the centre point of which is a station with make up artists waiting to use speciallyformulated product that’s suitable for touching up any tell-tale needle punctures or bruises from your treatment before, say, going back to the office – a genius idea that speaks volumes about how well they understand their clientele and have taken their needs into account. But first – the analysis. Never my favourite part of any aesthetics experience, due to a period of utter recklessness that saw me living in the Mediterranean for six years and applying facial sunscreen maybe twice. The result of that, plus hormones and genetics, is a face that, while relatively unscathed wrinkle-wise, is a positive Bayeux Tapestry of hyperpigmentation (“Mummy, why have you wiped chocolate on your face?” asked our youngest on a recent holiday – thanks pal). Throw in sleep deprivation, stress and a diet that leaves a lot to be desired and I’m feeling lacklustre, to say the least. I needn’t have worried, as Dr Daniel is everything I want in an aesthetics doctor – vastly experienced, hilariously funny, incredibly warm, sensitive and yet still a straight-talker. We discuss treatment options for my pigmentation, but he’s honest enough to admit that the results will be a slow-burn situation that will require further treatments for optimal outcome, so… instant gratification-aholic that I am, I opt for some judiciously applied Botox and lip filler. After the usual ‘settling in period’ one would expect, I am thrilled with the results – my face is lighter, brighter and more youthful but, crucially, without being able to pinpoint why. (The quest to conquer the pigmentation continues, but I suspect it lies at the sharp end of an ablative laser, and until I pluck up the courage, that’s what foundation is for, right?) I skipped out in the street with my make up expertly applied, seriously impressed and quite smug in the knowledge that I’d been treated at the hottest new ticket in town. 20 St. James’s Street, SW1A (020 4542 1697; ouronyx.com) January 2024 | FABRIC MAGAZINE | 43

To celebrate the launch, we asked the Forrist team to share a delicious, healthy recipe created using staples from the collection. They say: “Get ready for a soul-warming experience with this aromatic lentil soup accompanied by rosemary and salt parsnip crisps. Bossa
Bringing contemporary Brazilian flavour to London, this sleek Marylebone eatery is the perfect antidote to the January blues Words by Liz Skone James Thank to new year dieting, the effects of post-Christmas budgeting, or just the desire to be hunkered down at home on a dark winter’s night, there seems to be an unwritten rule that January is not for dining out. It feels churlish to deny this small indulgence at a time when even the simplest pleasures seem hard to come by, though. Thus I persuade a friend that we should punctuate a day of sales shopping with a proper lunch pause. Moments from Bond Street, and a mere hop, skip and a jump from Selfridges, Bossa could not be better placed. The Vere Street eatery was opened by Alberto Landgraf early last summer, going on to receive a coveted mention in the Michelin Guide. Its success is unsurprising – the Brazilian-born chef proprietor holds not one, but two Michelin stars for his Rio de Janeiro restaurant, Oteque. He has entrusted the kitchen here to head chef Nilson Chaves, who worked LUXURY LONDON LIVING

with him for many years at Oteque and brings a contemporary spin to the menu. While evenings can get pricey, a more accessible new lunch menu offers three courses for just £45, and it is this that has drawn us in out of the drizzle. Upon stepping through the doors we are struck by how calm Bossa feels – it is a world away from the frenzy that we have left behind on Oxford Street. Perfectly pitched lighting, warm wood, and a glowing, earthy colour palette lend the space an understated elegance. A long cocktail bar stretches across the floorto-ceiling windows that look out onto the street, providing an attractive buffer from the buzz outside. We are shown to one of four central tables, where we settle ourselves on the luxuriously soft leather bench seats. Here, we have an uninterrupted view of the open kitchen and its churrasco grill, which is set behind
counter seating along the back wall. Forget the high tensions of Boiling Point, the calm vibe continues here, with the team scurrying around quietly, skilfully putting dishes together with minimum fuss. We treat ourselves to a brilliantly Brazilian Caipirinha made with Weber Haus Cachaça Branca that tastes like summer in a glass. Starters
arrive quickly, and are exquisitely presented – colourful roasted beets, creamy goat’s cheese and green leaves feel at once indulgent and virtuous. We scrape the plates clean, all the while watching our mains being prepared over the flaming grill in front of us. We’ve chosen to share chicken and sea bass. The former comes with polenta and vinaigrette – a Brazilian salsa-like salad, made here with sweetcorn. The latter, meanwhile, is served with vatapá – a creamy Afro-Brazilian seafood stew – and deliciously piquant pickled Romanesco. Both dishes are light and perfectly balanced – ideal for lunch. So light, indeed, that we have room for dessert, and our friendly waitress recommends we try the quindim, a traditional Brazilian coconut and egg custard. Vibrant orange in colour and surrounded in a crown of toasted coconut shards, it is quite the showstopper, and is deliciously sweet. Special mention goes to the toilets, which are as chic as the restaurant and feature divine-smelling (and appropriately named) Bossa soap and hand cream from luxe Brazilian brand, Granado. The sun-soaked scent lingers for the rest of the day, reminding us of an utterly sensational lunch. We both agree that the team at Bossa are bossing it. 4 Vere Street, W1G (020 3062 5844; bossa.co.uk)

MOORISH MAGIC
Recently refurbished, five-star The Residence, Tunis provides the ultimate stop-over for a long weekend of feasting, exploring and relaxing Words by Steven Short During a brilliant long weekend in Tunis I learned how to cook delicious local food, immersed myself in the culture – and found out what links King of Pop Michael Jackson, painter Paul Klee and fashion designer Azzedine Alaïa. My base was the recently refurbished, five-star The Residence, Tunis. Beautifully designed throughout – a mash-up of colourful, traditional Tunisian and modern contemporary styles, from its huge Moorish reception complete with palm trees, to the comfortable, light and airy accommodation – it’s just 40 minutes from the airport and 25 minutes to Carthage, the site of our first cultural excursion with local guide and expert on all things Tunis, Fethi Bouguezzi. Arriving at the UNESCO World Heritage site Fethi asked us, “How many Carthages do you think there are in the world? Sixty five! Of course, Cartagena is the same name, which means ‘New Town’, but ours is the oldest!” Carthage survived various attacks and two Punic wars and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1972 – sadly not before as much as 60 per cent of the internationally important archaeology was lost under modern houses. But there are still plenty of ruins to explore, including the remains of centuries old houses and burial sites. It was while looking at the tomb of an unknown teenager that Fethi told us the story of Hannibal and how, rather than surrender to the Romans, he drank poison, after which his body was whisked off to Turkey, where it remains today (its precise location unknown.) Close to the main site are the imposing Antonine baths. “They were the third largest public baths in the Roman Empire, and stood as high as a seven-story building.” A rebuilt column gives you an idea of the scale of the buildings. Hungry from so much history, we returned to the hotel for an immersive cooking class. Our lunch was shakshouka (the spicy onion, pepper, tomato and egg stew that’s currently giving smashed avo a run for its money on brunch menus), mechouia salad (chargrilled peppers and aubergine mashed up with garlic and coriander) and samosa-like brik, filled with potato, capers, 48 | FABRIC MAGAZINE | January 2024

tuna and egg. But before we cooked, we foraged ingredients in the hotel’s Earth Basket, a sustainable herb and vegetable garden that’s also home to geese and cute rabbits that are definitely not for eating (I asked.) Children are welcome in the garden too: the Residence’s kids’ club provides activities that include learning about planting and growing food, along with swimming and camel rides on the hotel’s private stretch of beach. Like everyone we met in Tunis, our chefs Akram and Ahmed were super friendly and enthusiastically answered our questions about Tunisian culture and its cuisine, something the hotel is keen to promote. Jamie Oliver filmed here recently, cooking local dishes on the beach, and the hotel was delighted that one of its team was featured. Traditional food and drink are also showcased at El Dar restaurant. Dar is Arabic for Home, and the restaurant is decorated in the traditional red and green stripes of Tunisia. Review / TRAVEL
With its vaulted ceiling and ornate columns, L’Olivier, the hotel’s Mediterranean restaurant makes quite an impression
Other dining options at the hotel include L’Olivier, which focuses on Mediterranean flavours, and Li Bai, the first Chinese restaurant in Tunis. Breakfast deserves an honourable mention at this point. Buffet-style it offers huge Continental spreads as well as local pastries, soups and delicacies including mtagbas, hand rolled pastries baked to order and that can be slathered with Nutella or filled with spicy shakshouka. There are also excellent syrupy fresh strawberry and tooth-jangly lemon juices, local teas and coffees. The pandemic, of course, was terrible for the hotel business (particularly given that Tunisia was still trying to rebuild its tourism after the 2015 terrorist attacks) but the team at The Residence, which opened in 1996, used the downtime to freshen up the rooms. The hotel has 161 rooms and nine suites, the most luxurious of which is suite 336, which has welcomed Hugh Grant, Hilary Clinton and Nelson Mandela, among others. During the pandemic they also rebuilt the glorious outdoor pool, which also has a poolside bar and restaurant. A second pool can be found inside the hotel’s Thalasso spa – another first for Tunis. The pool and its Jacuzzi are filled with saltwater heated to 32 degrees and are the ideal spot for relaxing ahead of a treatment – a seaweed, mud or oil wrap perhaps, or an authentic Hammam body exfoliation. Plenty of massages and hydrotherapy treatments are on the menu too, along with Clarins facials. The hotel also has its own 18-hole golf course that’s gloriously green all year round thanks to an ingenious (and top-secret) irrigation system, so you can play here when the UK and Europe are less inviting. A golf school offers tuition for all levels. Our second trip out with Fethi was to the newly reopened Bardo National Museum, housed within a beautiful palace with incredible domed ceilings and amazing stucco work, and home to a peerless collection of mosaics. From here we made our way to the buzzy Medina (old town). Once a walled city protected by 18 gates, of which five remain, the Medina is home to some 200 palaces and 40 souks selling rugs (so many rugs!), metalwork and traditional local chechia, a kind of red beret. There’s a gold market too: in the grounds of the Bardo museum. Fethi grabbed a pod from a tree, cracking it open to reveal a dark brown seed and pronouncing: “This is carob! They used to use the seeds to weigh gold – that’s where we get the word carat.” Finally, we were taken to Sidi Bou Said, a pretty seaside town painted white and blue, with cobbled streets and bougainvillea spilling over walls. There is a little souk, too, where, as with inside the Medina, Fethi seems to know everyone. Sitting down for coffee our guide told us about the time Michael Jackson popped into the café when he was playing at the local stadium, drawing crowds the likes of which had never been seen before. Later on, we passed the home of the late fashion designer and Tunis native Azzedine Alaïa, now a foundation celebrating his body con creations, and a sign about the 1914 visit of painter Paul Klee who spent time in the town as part of a working holiday that would inspire him for many years afterwards. It is not hard to see why.

Drawing inspiration from classic literature, this is a trend that incorporates rich, dark colours, antique furniture pieces, soft lighting, and preferably a collection of dusty antiquarian hardbacks to create spaces that are both sophisticated and atmospheric. Think moody maximalism with a Gothic twist. While the trend has been around for a few seasons, until now, it has been the domain of the living or dining room. Playfully, dark academia is now creeping into unexpected areas, such as the bathroom – where, of course, traditional claw-footed tubs match the aesthetic perfectly. Don’t be afraid to use darker colours here, or to bring in furniture pieces or décor that you’d normally find in the drawing room of a grand period property. And swap out your brightly coloured bathmat for a traditional Persian rug in rich tones of burgundy, black and navy blue.

Characterised by heritage prints, whimsical woodland motifs and delicately embroidered soft furnishings, the folklore trend is all about creating cosy spaces to hunker down in. Celebrating time-honoured craftsmanship, folksy interiors hone in on the finer details, such as scalloped edging and decorative borders. The overall effect is quirky and creative, with eye-catching interest at every turn. Although the folklore trend has much in common with maximalism, here, you’ll find a softer, organic colour palette and a more considered approach to craftsmanship and materials. Busy patterns and prints can be juxtaposed for effect – but it’s important to avoid grown up spaces looking like kids’ rooms. For a more sophisticated look, marry animalia with a bold contrasting stripe or geometric print. Painterly, nature-inspired murals and battered vintage furniture pieces work well together, while layering up embroidered cushions, bedspreads and throws is a must.

Think of florals and you picture ditsy wallpaper prints or chintzy curtains from the 1980s. Cut to 2024 and the bursting blooms trend gives us a refreshing take, essentially playing with scale. This one’s all about incorporating bold, oversized – and over the top – floral motifs into our living spaces, with vibrant pattern and shapes that successfully blur the lines between visual art and homeware. Large-scale floral motifs find their natural home in wallcoverings, whether they’re part of a repeat pattern wallpaper or an expansive mural. For the full effect, choose designs with flowers in full bloom and go bold with maximum coverage, taking full advantage of a period property’s ceiling height if you have it. Contemporary carpet design is increasingly featuring scaled-up florals, too, whether they’re woven with realism in mind, or are a little more abstract. Choose accompanying furniture wisely – simple, mid-century pieces in walnut work particularly well against a background of bursting blooms.

With design roots in ancient Greece, the Greek key pattern has never really gone out of style, but in 2024 it is set to see a resurgence. Synonymous with the Versace brand, both in fashion and homeware, it brings immediate luxe to our living spaces. Alongside these sharp geometrics is the more fluid ribbon motif, which sees looping patterns in strict symmetry across carpets, soft furnishings, and even furniture pieces. The beauty of this trend is its versatility. The Greek key and swirling ribbon motifs can be used in countless creative ways, both large and small. Where less is sometimes more, you might find the key pattern used as a border across bedding, cushions and curtains. It also makes for a striking upholstery fabric – a chic black and white colourway can bring a contemporary update. Where there’s a surface there’s an opportunity to decorate it, and even in cabinet marquetry you’ll find intricate Greek key and ribbon motifs. The latter works best when in strict parallel lines.

With the last of the festive decorations boxed up for another year, it’s time to look forward. We give you 2024’s key trends in interior design Words by Ali Howard
In the fashion world, this one’s about adopting a more subtle, understated and discreet form of luxury without the need for flashy branding or overt displays of wealth. In interiors, too, quiet luxury focuses on understated elegance and quality of craftsmanship, over and above any obvious riches. Think sophisticated, refined pieces that celebrate simple forms and honest materials. Thanks to their timelessness and longevity, these pieces also prove sustainable. Allowing the quality and craftmanship of the product to speak for itself, the quiet luxury trend sees a stripping back of any fleeting fashion and focuses instead on enduring style. The use of premium but often understated materials is a hallmark, as is attention to detail and fine finishes. We’re seeing a move towards warm earthy tones, too, and this reflects the simplicity of quiet luxury, which states that the organic materials are enough, without further decoration. Considered design is also key, and so comfort and functionality are equal to aesthetics in quiet luxury, and just as in the slow living movement, these pieces are made to last a lifetime.

Emily-Jane Brown
If you’re thinking of giving your home a fresh lick of paint this new year, take a leaf out of Emily-Jane’s book and find courage in colour Words by Ali Howard
Emily-Jane and partner Conrad worked with design studio WANDA to breathe life and colour into their period home 54 | FABRIC MAGAZINE | January 2024
14 Fabric-JAN24-Interiors_AHW_2p.indd 54
We can all swoon over colourful homes on Instagram, each post outdoing the last in its juxtaposition of daring paint shades and vibrant furniture pieces, but how many of us are bold enough to give the colour wheel a proper spin in our own home? Emily-Jane describes herself and partner Conrad as brave colour enthusiasts, with a playful sense of style, and that much is obvious the moment you step inside their multi-hued Victorian townhouse. The couple bought the property in the summer of 2021 and share their space with their two small children, Ralph and Florence, and their large fluffy Maine Coon, Spooky. “The front is grade II listed, but the inside isn’t, and at some point in the ’70s a large kitchen extension was added to the back,” Emily tells me. “When we bought the house it had been rented out to various people for the three years previously, so as well as being a little worse for wear, particularly in the garden, it was a huge white box. There wasn’t a drop of colour to be seen.” The pair worked with interior design studio WANDA on their vibrant vision. Here, the bold and unexpected ways colour is used is just as striking and significant as the colour choices themselves. Take the ground floor reception, affectionately known as The Pink Room. Save for the natural wood flooring, the pink paint playfully saturates
the space; think radiator, door, ceiling, mantelpiece, and even the ornate fireplace itself, with the exception of the original period tiles that pop out against the contemporary, Barbie-like shade. Emily describes the room as “completely dipped” in the colour. “It makes me smile! It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, there was a lot of peering from the neighbours as we started to paint the walls, ceiling, and shutters! But it totally suits us. I bought about 100 paint samples trying to get the exact right shade of pink. In the end we went with Nancy’s Blushes from Farrow & Ball, it has such a lovely tone to it, which changes as the light changes throughout the day.” The colour wouldn’t have quite the same impact in a low-ceilinged modern build, and it’s only with the property’s impressive Victorian scale, complete with period features, that the pink sits so playfully and comes across as brilliantly irreverent. Emily tells me that despite suffering a little neglect under previous inhabitants, the house, thankfully, has maintained its original sash windows and shutters, ceiling roses and cornicing, and working fireplaces, and these are all lovingly incorporated into the colourful scheme. It is also thanks to the property’s Victorian scale that The Pink Room is sizable enough to accommodate a baby grand piano, which has seemingly been plunged into an oversized tin LUXURY LONDON LIVING

GET THE LOOK of bright cobalt paint. Emily reveals: “We bought it from eBay for a bargain price and then sent it to a spray-painting company to turn it from boring dark wood to sparkling blue! It’s a real head-turner.” With pink being a neutral (the antidote to millennial grey), even more vibrant colours pop out, such as the rich purple and canary yellow in the open-plan lounge, which leads onto the L-shaped kitchen at the back. With its large open fire and plush velvet seating that perfectly matches the aubergine walls, there’s a darker, sultry mood here, but it is no less fun. The bold colours in the house are matched with equally daring artworks. I wonder if Emily is a keen collector. “As Conrad and I both work in the creative industry, in advertising, art is sort of in our DNA,” she explains. “We love contemporary, graphic art and we commissioned a typographic artist who we love, Dave Towers, to make us a triptych to hang in the lounge. We then worked with The Yorkshire Framer to frame the pieces in rainbow acrylic box frames so they really stood out from the dark wall and complemented the artwork that Dave had made for us.” Emily’s favourite spot in the house is the recently completed kitchen, and I’m keen to know its history, and the process behind the finished design. “Originally it was a bland, cream, unfunctional Ikea kitchen which we completely stripped out,” she tells me. “It had a modern dark tiled floor which didn’t suit the new style we created, or the house, so we removed that too and started from scratch. We changed the layout so the space could be used in a better way, and put in a lilac, modern, sleek kitchen from Wren. We replaced the floor with cork tiling and put up colourful wallpaper at the end of the L shape to help section it into a dining/ morning coffee space. We had bespoke white Corian worktops made, which are completely seamless (with the sink built in), which really helps to elongate the short end of the room, and a LUXURY LONDON LIVING

hand-crafted island made from ply and yellow tiles. It works so much better for us now and it’s a pleasure to spend time in, and because its around the corner from the other downstairs rooms, it’s like a final visual surprise for your eyes!” Along with the blue baby grand, Emily’s most prized piece is the range cooker that sits proudly at the far end of the kitchen. “Originally we had an old, black Aga and after the first year we realised that, although we loved Aga life, the gas bills were just too horrendous, and so we had to replace it. That’s when we found the Everhot, an electric version that has the same charm and style as an Aga but doesn’t result in a large bill every month. It’s also the same size as an Aga so we could get one that would fit perfectly in the space we had, and in January 2022 they released a new colour called Fandango Pink. It is now the star of the house.” I ask Emily-Jane what advice she would give to homeowners who might be a little cautious when it comes to using bold colours. “Just go for it!” she says. “We were nervous at first, particularly with the front room when we were painting the original stripped back wooden shutters pink, but once it was all finished the effect was stunning.” wandalust.co.uk

The site stocks a range of works to suit every taste and budget, that will work in any interior or garden environment
Tell me about Sculpture Source and how it came about Sculpture Source is the first online platform dedicated to collecting sculpture. The idea first came about in lockdown when we realised that if we provided top quality sculpture with top quality images, clients would feel confident enough to purchase sculpture without having to see it in the gallery. So we went about building a specially designed platform to help clients find the work they are looking for from a wide variety of sculptors. Tell me about your background I’ve spent the past 15 years running a sculpture gallery in King’s Cross called Pangolin London. I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the best sculptors working today alongside one of the best sculpture foundries in Europe, Pangolin Editions. How do you source, and choose, the pieces for the site? I feel it is important to have variety on the site with works to suit every taste and budget. For example, I try to make sure we have enough animal and figurative works as well as abstract, and that we have a range of works to suit any interior or garden environment. Fortunately, we have a huge network of sculptors to work with and our two main criteria are quality of craftsmanship, and would we have it in our own home? How have consumers’ attitudes changed towards buying art online? Collectors have come a long way in the past five years in how comfortable they feel purchasing art online, however they still feel more confident buying two-dimensional works like paintings and prints, hence our desire to bring to the market a top quality sculpture offering. LUXURY LONDON LIVING
15 Fabric-JAN24-Interiors_On design_2p.indd 57
How have you designed the site to be accessible for buyers? Buying sculpture can be a daunting prospect to new collectors, given its three-dimensional presence, varied making processes, and price points. Sculpture Source aims to break that all down and make it much easier for a collector to look at work. We’ve designed the site so that you can search through general terms such as size, price, material, etc. but also more sculpture specific criteria such as space, colour, texture, subject, and whether it’s for indoors or outdoors. What advice would you give to a novice collector? Buy what you love and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It sounds basic but there is so much to learn and enjoy about collecting sculpture. What’s next for Sculpture Source? We are currently working on bringing an exciting collection of new works to the site by a range of emerging and established sculptors. We are also hoping to announce a new partnership for our ‘white glove’ delivery option. sculpturesource.co.uk January 2024 | FABRIC MAGAZINE | 57

SCHOOLS / A capital education
REASSESSING ASSESSMENT
The pandemic amplified existing concerns about the dominance of timed assessments in education. Could the time be right for change? Words by Claire Atherton
do nothing but prepare pupils for exams for the preceding two terms.” The chance to gain this time back is a big part of why some independent schools are designing and badging their own qualifications. Students at The King Alfred School now have the option of taking two or three of its own courses alongside six or seven GCSEs. Latymer Upper School will replace all GCSEs except for Maths and English Language with its own internally assessed courses from 2027. And Bedales School in Hampshire plans to move to Bedales Assessed Courses (BACs) for most GCSE subjects. The flexibility to phase out or replace GCSEs is currently a privilege of the independent sector. But Alistair expects reform of some kind to follow in the state sector, regardless of who wins the 2024 general election. “The Tories are talking about replacing A levels with an Advanced British Standard, which allows pupils to study a broader range of topics,” he says. “And Labour have talked about assessing ‘oracy’ [a child’s ability to express themselves verbally]. But there’s currently no move to reduce the number of exams.”
The solution: a dynamic digital learner profile
When it comes to assessment, teachers and politicians seem to be increasingly on the same page. The last couple of years have seen a raft of reviews, reports and commissions looking into how to reform the system. Prime minister Rishi Sunak and the leader of the opposition, Sir Keir Starmer, have separately adopted several of the recommendations of the Times Education Commission. And some independent schools have announced plans to ditch GCSEs in favour of their own qualifications. So why is the topic getting so much attention? “What we’re seeing now is the effects of the 2015 government reforms on teachers and students filtering through,” says Alistair McConville, deputy head of The King Alfred School and co-founder of Rethinking Assessment. “Lockdown also provided an opportunity for teachers to step back and think about the nature of timed assessments.” 60 | FABRIC MAGAZINE | January 2024
16 Fabric-JAN24-Schools_2p.indd 60
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Alistair says the findings of the various reviews are similar: the current system is putting too much emphasis on exam performance. Not only does this timed, pen-andpaper approach disadvantage some groups, but it also creates unnecessary stress for many children. What’s more, it ignores the skills employers are looking for, like creative thinking, communication and collaboration.
More than just a numbers game
While excessive testing exists at all levels, Alistair believes that Key Stage 4 (GSCEs) is most ripe for reform. “The number of exams pupils sit is huge – around 30 for someone taking 10 GCSEs,” he says. “The exclusive focus on knowledge retention doesn’t allow students to show they can connect different bits of knowledge. And teachers are so beholden to getting good results that they
For Alistair and the advisory group at Rethinking Assessment, the ideal solution would be a ‘digital learner profile’ that allows a student to present their achievements in a cumulative way, from primary right through to applying for university and jobs. “The profile would include the results of exams and other courses, but also evidence of projects, skills in action and work experience,” explains Alistair. “So, instead of exam grades, the continuous mechanism would be a dynamic profile that students have some control over, and that teachers, parents, universities and employers could all use. It would create an incentive for schools to give kids a genuinely broad education.” Would this approach spell the end of exams as we know them? “There’s a place for assessment, but the stakes shouldn’t be so high, and the methods should be more varied,” says Alistair. “An exam-based system teaches students to fit preordained material into preordained formats, to please a group of examiners who want things to be as simple and comparable as possible. But AI could do that. We want kids to do the opposite: to think creatively, and to show they can produce something that’s their own.” rethinkingassessment.com; kingalfred.org.uk LUXURY LONDON LIVING

A HEAD START Last term Habs Boys’ School welcomed Robert Sykes as new Headmaster. It’s fair to say he’s settled in
Robert served as Head of Spanish at Habs from 2011 to 2014 and then as Deputy Head Academic since April 2020. Outside of Habs, Robert has spent the majority of his career in leading independent schools in and around London. He is passionate about providing an ambitious and dynamic education for young people, one that will enable them to have a profound impact on the local community in Elstree, but also in the world around them. “This is a very exciting moment for me, and I feel humbled and privileged to be taking on the role of Headmaster at this wonderful school,”

Mr Sykes said of the promotion. “I am fully aware of the strengths of Habs and the potential that the school has. Habs is a dynamic, ambitious, and caring school and I am very excited to be leading the school forward into the next phase of our development. As a school, we have also thought a lot about our values of ambition, curiosity, courage, and community, as well as our core purpose. We strive to empower young people to make a profound impact in the world. This might mean pupils leaving us ready to lead, to bring others along with them, and to drive profound and positive change in society. This could
equally mean having a profound impact in personal ways on those around them, growing up to be good people, caring partners and valued friends to others. By maintaining our academic ambition and enabling students to achieve the highest academic outcomes, whilst also supporting them to grow personally, and to invest in our community, we can be sure that they will leave us fully equipped to make their own profound impact in the world. As an academically ambitious school, students at Habs can expect to be challenged above and beyond any exam curriculum. We encourage students to think hard, and we nurture intellectual curiosity, all of which enables students not just to excel in exams and achieve their higher education goals, but also to develop an enduring love of learning. We develop students’ personal skills and attributes. Through our exciting curriculum and our outstanding range of
co-curricular and partnership opportunities, students develop character, independence, creativity, teamwork and the ability to communicate and motivate others. We value every individual for who they are and support our students to find happiness. We encourage students to take responsibility and ownership. Students have opportunities to lead, in Sports, Music, the Arts, CCF, through our partnership initiatives, and in many other ways, helping them to recognise the part they can play to make our community even stronger and more cohesive, whilst having fun along the way. By enabling students to achieve the highest academic outcomes, to grow personally, and to invest in our community, we can be sure that they will leave us fully equipped to make their own profound impact in the world.” For all admissions enquiries, email admissions@habsboys.org.uk (020 8266 1700; habsboys.org.uk) January 2024 | FABRIC MAGAZINE | 61

A TRUE MEASURE OF SUCCESS Kevin Carson, headteacher at RMS for Girls explains why the school ‘League Tables’ you see in the newspapers may not tell the full story, and reveals what we should be looking at
Every year, ‘League Tables’ are published in newspapers, showing how UK schools performed in the latest GCSE and A level examinations. Most headteachers are not a fan of such tables of raw results, and this includes headteachers of schools who are positioned at the ‘top’ of these lists. It’s not that we are concerned about where our school is positioned – and I write having worked at a couple of schools that were always placed highly in such lists – it is more that, as Heads, we know that league tables based on a school’s raw grades (i.e. counting how many A*s were achieved at A Level or 9s and 8s at GCSE) only really tell us how academically selective a school is. The schools that are more academically selective at age 11 and 16 will invariably be the schools that sit at the top of league tables of raw results each year – no surprises there! In addition to the flaws around what tables of raw results actually tell us, many Heads find their publication in newspapers to be unhealthy and unhelpful. It is seen as an insidious part of a culture that encourages parents to equate the ‘best’ schools with those that have the most A*s or grade 9s, and a culture that has on occasion led to unscrupulous Heads not entering their less able pupils for examinations they have studied hard for. A far more accurate, and indeed healthier, way of assessing the academic progress made by students in a school is to look at the ‘value added’ by each school. The Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM) was established at Durham University in 1983, and they are the largest educational research unit in a UK university. CEM work with UK schools, colleges, education authorities and government agencies to provide scientifically grounded research that monitors every school’s academic performance. Students sit baseline tests for CEM at ages 11, 14 and 16. From having received 40 years of this assessment data, CEM are able to give each child a scarily accurate predicted grade for every subject they study and can then standardise each school’s actual results in order to tell us how far above or below their predicted grade a student achieves, compared to a student of the same profile in another school. From this, CEM have rigorous evidence to say how much value every school adds academically. Every independent school that I have worked at over two decades already uses the CEM data internally to assess its own academic progress at a school and department level. Analysis of CEM value-added data is a standard aspect of the Department Reviews that are written every September in schools. From our CEM data this year, I can see that RMS sits on the 92nd percentile LUXURY LONDON LIVING
24 Fabric-JAN24-Advertorial_RMS_1p.indd 63
of all schools and the 87th percentile of all independent schools for value-added performance (i.e. we add more value academically than 9 out of 10 schools). At a department level, I can see which departments are performing at or above expectation and can view a rolling three-year average so I’m not placing too much weight on the results of one year group. CEM’s value-added data lets schools and departments receive just as much credit for a less able pupil who typically might have been expected to attain a Grade 4 actually achieving a Grade 5 or 6 at GCSE, as a more able pupil who typically might have been expected to attain a Grade 7 actually achieving a Grade 8 or 9. This is just how it should be, of course! Value added is the most important metric because it reflects the extent to which all pupils are truly achieving their potential. Unfortunately, it is not what is published in your Sunday newspaper each year, but then perhaps you should be questioning what value is actually added by looking at a league table of raw results. Talking points / PROPERTY over where the bank rate will peak, the political temperature is rising ahead of a general election, plus the impact of overseas conflict... Sentiment has been sapped to the extent that the seasonal autumn bounce in the UK housing market was non-existent in 2023. Demand has picked up, but sales volumes remain low compared to recent years. Is this the fabled bottom of the market? It’s probably too early to say but with inflation now under control we should see the Bank of England starting to cut rates in Q2 this year. Even with margins getting thin, lenders are keen to do business in a low-volume market and as mortgage costs fall, a seasonal bounce in the spring is looking more likely.” For Richard Gutteridge, head of Savills prime central London, there’s every reason to be cautiously optimistic, but we may have to practise a bit of patience, too. “Our forecasts indicate that PCL is expected to see the least downward pressure on prices next year, given much less reliance on mortgage debt and the relative value on offer to wealthy domestic and international buyers,” he says. “Prices are 19 per cent below

MOVING ON
2023 saw turbulent times for buyers and sellers alike. Our property experts predict what’s in store for 2024 If last year taught us anything, it’s that you can’t fully predict what lies ahead in the London property market, but the next best thing to whipping out a crystal ball is to consult the experts, who have decades of first-hand knowledge and insight to draw upon. So, as we emerge, bleary-eyed into a new year, are things looking up? “Sentiment will become more positive in the UK housing market as the economic picture improves,” Neir Gigi, Knight Frank’s head of St. John’s Wood sales assures us, “but there has been no shortage of reasons for buyers and sellers to feel hesitant in recent months. Mortgage rates have tripled in three years, there is uncertainty LUXURY LONDON LIVING

their 2014 peak and represent relative value. Our forecasts point to a bottoming out of values next year and in 2025, we expect to see price growth of 3.5 per cent, rising to six per cent in 2026 as the global economy picks up more significantly and any domestic political instability that the next general election causes subsides – although the prospect of a general election is expected to push out the timing of a recovery.” Chancellors’ regional director of London Matt Johnson also predicts a slowly but surely trajectory for the London housing market, with more stable times ahead. “Looking into 2024, with the significant drop in the UK’s inflation rate in November 2023, it is likely we have reached the peak base rate level,” he says. “Although this is unlikely to come down in the early part of 2024, it does mean it’s equally unlikely to rise further. Mortgage market competition will mean lenders should begin to compete with lower rates to gain market share, certainly in the first quarter of 2024, whilst they have more to lend. This could encourage would-be buyers to commit. This should also protect prices from the more extreme falls that were predicted as rates first started to rise. However, with the certainty of a general election in 2024, we will see buyers inevitably pause in the lead up to voting, which we have seen historically. Therefore, although I feel prices will be more resilient than the worst-case scenarios that have been stated in the media, transaction numbers will remain lower than previous peak levels. Summing up, similar to last year, 2024 will still be a good time to sell if you price in line with the market, but if you are looking to break a record or to be speculative, you might need to sit tight.” knightfrank.co.uk; savills.co.uk; chancellors.co.uk January 2024 | FABRIC MAGAZINE | 65
