O LIZ SKONE JAMES Editor
ur home says so much about who we are, so it goes without saying that we want it to be saying only the right things. That has very much been our focus this month, starting with our arresting cover shoot, which brings the finest art and design, both vintage and current, out into the daylight. Whether you’re looking for a real investment piece of furniture, a striking new light feature or just an update for your kitchen crockery, you’ll find plenty of inspiration here. And in our At Home With feature, we explore just what it takes to make a property into a real home, as opposed to simply somewhere to live – there’s a big difference. Finally, our area focus this month is the glorious Regent’s Park, which, with its acres of green space, feels fitting for July – provided the sun shines, of course. Here’s hoping it does…
63 Glorious greenery and magnificent Nash terraces ensure Regent’s Park is a very special place to live

FABRIC PROMOTION
A CUT ABOVE JOINING A HOST OF FABRIC FOODIE FAVOURITES ON LITTLE VENICE'S CLIFTON ROAD, PROVENANCE'S NEWEST BUTCHERY IS THE ULTIMATE CELEBRATION OF THE FIELD-TO-FORK PHILOSOPHY
L
ondon foodies will know Provenance as a destination village butcher, such is its far-reaching reputation for quality, free-range cuts and ethically sourced produce. Just 12 months after their 2013 opening in Notting Hill, they were awarded Time Out Village Shop of the Year, in fact. Since then, the butchers, run by an experienced and passionate KiwiBritish team, have opened three further destinations: in Chelsea, West Hampstead, and their most recent, in the heart of leafy Little Venice. With a warm and welcoming home kitchen feel, and deep and personal relationships with both customers and suppliers, the staff at Provenance are focused on keeping the high street a thriving place to shop – and that’s never more apparent than in their latest opening on the bustling Clifton Road. Co-founder and head butcher Struan Robertson confirms: “We believe our role is to
connect the community we serve with the fantastic farmers we’ve chosen to supply us. The producers are the focus and the stars, and we’re committed to creating an atmosphere where customers can trust us to deliver great tasting food from farmers we believe in, in an environment that is friendly, relaxed and informative.” Provenance pride themselves on their “field-to-fork” philosophy, putting animal welfare and traditional farming methods at the fore: all products come exclusively wellbred without growth promoters, antibiotics or hormones, for example. Animals are fully free range and grass fed, and that’s not only better for the environment but for flavour, too. The newly opened Little Venice shop is a must-visit whether you’re looking for a quick mid-week meal for the family, such as their hugely popular marinated boneless chicken, or whether you’re in the

Gezellig
I
’ve been pronouncing it a bit like the longlimbed African antelope, but I’ve got it all wrong, laughs smiley sommelier Wieteke Teppema. It’s actually “heh-SELL-ick”, a Dutch word that is perhaps best translated as: ‘an atmosphere which allows good times to happen’. And, though I’ve only just walked in, it feels a fitting moniker. Formerly Holborn Town Hall, the Grade-II listed space has been sensitively refurbished, retaining lots of original features. It’s all olive green walls, walnut wood and double height ceilings, but a mezzanine bar suspended over the dining room prevents the space from feeling cavernous. And a quirky collection of art referencing wine and pop art makes for an interesting talking point. I’m late, and my lunch companion, unable to wait a minute longer, has pre-ordered a selection of bar snacks. We tuck into flaky sausage rolls filled with succulent pulled pork and served with chef Graham Long’s (formerly of L’Autre Pied and Elystan Street) own take on brown sauce, light as a feather cheddar and walnut gougères, and suckling pig bitterballen with sweet mustard. The latter are the only Dutch dish on the menu – akin to croquettes they are utterly delicious. We’ve been anticipating this opening since the team popped up at Carousel in 2017, and early indications suggest that it’s been worth the wait. We’re guided by the friendly front of house team when it comes to choosing from the modern European menu, and nothing disappoints. For
me, a starter of grilled courgettes, broad beans, ewe’s curd and mint is followed by pecorino gnocchi with peas, girolles and wild garlic. Both are perfectly presented, beautifully balanced dishes. A taste of summer on a plate. The gnocchi is garnished with shavings of piquant Belper Knolle cheese, which is divine. Cosy and convivial, we’re bowled over by Gezellig. It is dangerously close to Fabric HQ, so we’ll certainly be back, next time for a boozy dinner to test Wieteke’s constantly evolving wine list. Dining, so it goes without saying that we are very excited about his new Eastcastle Street site. The London restaurant focuses on rice, which, while it may not have much presence in high-end gastronomy, has always been integral to Quique’s cooking. One of the most recognised experts in the field, he has even written a book about rice, Arroces Contemporáneos. Dishes include paella Valenciana, a traditional take on the dish that includes rabbit chop, chicken and butter
beans, all cooked over a wood fire. An open kitchen treats diners to views of the eight-metre flame grill upon which their rice is cooked. Speaking of the new opening, Quique says: “bringing our tradition and gastronomy to one of the main capitals in the world, both generally and gastronomically, is an exercise of commitment and responsibility which fills me with excitement.” 64 Eastcastle Street, W1W (020 3883 3525; arrosqd.com)

Mix this: Sacred Rosehip Spritz Long summer days call for long refreshing drinks, and Highgate-based Sacred Spirits have just the thing: the Sacred Rosehip Spritz. It is made using their Sacred Rosehip Cup, an all-natural, gently bitter aperitif, produced right here in London and made with English rosehips, sweet Spanish oranges, organic Peruvian ginger and naturally coloured with red grape skins and English rhubarb juice. Though it was originally created for the Negroni, it also makes the most delicious spritz – a refreshing and sophisticated alternative to the mainstream brands. Here’s how to do it.
INGREDIENTS 75ml sparkling wine 50ml Sacred Rosehip Cup 25ml soda water To garnish 1 orange, sliced
METHOD Take a large wine glass and fill with ice. Add the sparkling wine, Rosehip Cup and soda water, stir and top with an orange slice. Alternatively, make it up in a large jug with plenty of ice and orange slices – just remember the 3-2-1 ratio (fizz-Rosehip Cup-soda). Sacred Rosehip Cup, £24.95 for 75cl (sacredgin.com)

When I was a child, I wanted to be… a French diplomat: so I could travel and see different cultures whilst representing my own. Obviously I chose to start cooking after my studies. In a way, I believe I still followed that dream, because I’m able to mix up my French techniques with the British way of eating out. My kitchen heroes are… my dad, who taught me the basics of cooking; Pierre Koffmann, who showed me how to cook with love; and Helena Puolakka, who encourages her team to feel like they are working towards a common goal. Not many chefs have this charisma. My fail-safe dinner party menu is… a whole side of salmon from my local fishmonger. It’s the perfect dish to share with friends or family; I cook it with tamarind and spices and serve it with broccoli, chilli and soy sauce.
Pastries from Prada Exciting news from Mayfair: Milanese favourites Marchesi 1824 have launched at 117 Mount Street. It is the first location outside Milan for the group, who launched their original Pasticceria in 1824. If you caught the 2014 Harrods pop-up, or last September’s at matchesfashion.com’s new Carlos Place space, you’ll know that this is very good news indeed. Renowned for their traditional panettone, Italian pastries, chocolates and confectionery, Marchesi was acquired by the Prada group in 2014, so it goes without saying that this is one seriously stylish pastry shop and caffé. The space has been kitted out in the green velvet and cherry wood furniture designed by Prada for the existing Milan site, which sits alongside original decorative tiled walls, wrought iron butchers’ hooks, and black and yellow Siena marble floors from the historic butcher, Allens of Mayfair, which stood on the site from 1880 until 2015. So much more than a mere bakery, the Mayfair shop is open throughout the day, serving croissants and thick Italian hot chocolate for breakfast, and Milanese risotto and cocktails in the evening. It is the latest and greatest in a line of designer eateries in the Capital and the place to be seen this summer. 117 Mount Street, W1K (020 8075 5380; pasticceriamarchesi.com/en)
My last meal on earth would be… a crêpe from Brittany, filled with grated cheddar, ham and a fried egg. I love the taste of the buckwheat flour; it gives an extra kick to the dish, and it’s lovely with a glass of cider. My favourite london restaurant is… La Dame de Pic at The Four Seasons. The restaurant has a relaxed feel and serves exquisite food. I love the berlingots (pasta parcels), one of Anne-Sophie Pic’s specialities. My ultimate London day consists of… hitting the gym and heading for a nice brunch afterwards. I’d spend the afternoon looking around for inspiration, especially on a market day. Deluxe Pedi at Young LDN I’ve a hankering for shiny toes to go with my new summer sandals, and I’ve been meaning to try out Westbourne Grove’s newest salon since it opened late last year, so it feels like the perfect moment to pop in. Upstairs in the trendy ‘lounge’ area, the menu includes a variety of quick treatments, including lashes, brows, peels and make-up. There’s even an LED Bar offering express facial treatments designed to boost collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid for both anti-ageing and acne-beating purposes. Where nails are concerned, there’s everything from the express to the deluxe, via a CBD special and a special medical pedicure option. The latter is a bespoke treatment incorporating LED and laser therapy to resolve fungal nail infections, cracked feet, verrucas, plantar warts and athlete’s foot, from which, luckily for me, I’m assured I do not suffer. I settle into one of the plush armchairs for a deluxe pedicure. Armed with a pile of glossy mags and sipping on a cup of herbal tea (which comes accompanied by a tiny Kilner jar of chocolate mini eggs), it feels like a delicious moment of time-out. My cuticles are seen to and my heels buffed, I’m treated to a foot scrub and a nourishing mask, followed by the most amazing foot and leg massage using my choice of essential oil, before my preferred polish is expertly applied. I’m impressed, and all the more so when I am treated to a tour of the ‘lab’ downstairs. Here, alongside high tech facials and peels, the team offer laser hair removal, micro-needling and tattoo removal. When founder Sue Carroll’s teenage son suffered from acne, she was reluctant for him to rely on prescription medication, but found that he felt uncomfortable visiting clinics and spas for treatment. She designed YoungLDN to appeal to both this millennial and Gen-Z audience and their parents, and it’s clear to me that she has found just the right balance. ffering a sustainable alternative to fast-fashion consumption, we love this new clothing and accessories rental platform. It works much like Airbnb in that HURR Collective holds no inventory of stock, but rather facilitates the rental transaction between peers. All members are fully vetted before they are accepted, and after each rental transaction mandatory peer reviews help members build their trust score. The site also incorporates a secure messaging system that allows lenders and renters to get to know each other and ask questions ahead of time – so you can ensure that your precious items will come back exactly as they were sent out. Adding to the sustainability credentials, HURR has partnered with eco-friendly dry cleaners Blanc, and green bicycle courier Pedals. Victoria Prew, co-founder and CEO says, “With HURR we’re striving to bring sustainability to the fashion industry, which is one of the world’s most polluting industries. Our members are part of a collective of forward-thinking women that believe renting makes both economic and environmental sense.” We couldn’t agree more.
With thoughts turning to holidays, we’re hot footing it to Aspiga this month. The sustainable and ethical holiday brand was founded 13 years ago by Lucy Macnamara, who works closely with local artisans in Kenya and India, helping them build their business and stimulating the local economy. The collection includes everything from espadrilles to kaftans and beach bags to hammam towels, but we’re especially coveting the beaded leather sandals. Not least because, on a mission to help clean up Malindi beach in Kenya, Aspiga have pledged to remove a basket of plastic for every pair of Kenyan sandals sold until the end of this month. They’re being helped by a team of local children, who will be paid for their time during the big clean up at the end of July. It’s a huge step in the right direction when it comes to sustainable fashion. Kenyan sandals from £58 (aspiga.com)

Miami dreaming Taking its distinctive Art Deco façade – designed by architect Russell Pancoast in 1934 – as a starting point, acclaimed interior designer Juan Ciavarella has breathed fresh life into Miami Beach’s Peter Miller Hotel. It will reopen as the Lennox Hotel Miami Beach this summer, offering stylish boutique accommodation. The hotel – located on Miami’s iconic Collins Avenue – will offer 119 unique guest rooms, each in keeping with the original architecture. The Argentinian interior designer has chosen a scheme incorporating soft neutral tones, natural elements, handcrafted furnishings, and ecofriendly and upcycled materials. At the centre of the hotel’s four interconnected buildings an idyllic Mediterranean-style courtyard features an intimate swimming pool and poolside bar, where a sushi and grill menu is served alongside a selection of delicious cocktails. It is the perfect spot to linger at leisure, but having travelled all that way, you’ll probably wish to venture away from this little slice of paradise: a complimentary shuttle service is available within a one-mile radius, including to a private area on the beach, where lounge chairs, umbrellas and towels are all available. Life’s a beach. For more details, see lennoxmiamibeach.com
Puglia is the ‘heel’ to Italy’s ‘boot’, offering unparalleled beaches on both the Adriatic and Ionian coastlines. Some of the best beaches are San Vito, Porto Contessa, Grotte Marine, Polignano a Mare, Cala Santo Stefano and Cala Incina. The azure waters around the coastline teem with swordfish, grouper, red snapper, tuna, sardines and bonito, which you can fish using traditional methods whilst taking in the rugged scenery of the coastline on a chartered fishing trip. Meanwhile, inland, there’s an abundance of countryside to explore. For history-lovers, I recommend hiking up to Monte Saraceno in Gargano, which leads you to the necropolis of Daunia (founded between 6th-5th Century BC). Foodies will be well catered for here, too. Many of the traditional Italian foods, such as burrata, come from Puglia. The city of Ostuni, known for its whitewashed old town, is home to some of the best dining destinations in the region. L’Osteria del Tempo Perso opened in 1983 and offers the typical cuisine of Puglia and Ostuni in rustic surroundings, while Taverna della Gelosia is a charming dining spot with no English menu. For those who like the idea of playing chef for the day, our chefs at Masseria Torre Maizza offer masterclasses in time-honoured local recipes. If you’re seeking a traditional memento from your travels in the region, I recommend visiting an Apulian artisan such as Enza Fasano Ceramiche. Located on Via Caravaggio in Grottaglie (a small town just outside the Western city of Taranto), the Enza Fasano bottega produces ceramic items that are inspired by the Grottesque tradition. Finally, if you’re visiting this month, the Festival della Valle d’Itria is celebrated from 16 July until 4 August. The summer opera festival offers visitors a chance to experience a variety of Italian operas live in the impressive surroundings of ancient palazzos. It’s unmissable. Nestled in woodland just outside Birmingham, Hampton Manor offers stylish accommodation paired with friendly service, but it is the Michelin-starred restaurant, Peel’s, that is the real star of the show
T

he concept of a restaurant with rooms always fills me with joy. Food and sleep – edit out all the other nonsense and cut straight to the chase. Place such an establishment in a pretty village near Birmingham, the halfway mark of an oft-travelled journey from London to The North, and I’ll be hard pushed to stay on the M6 every time I approach the junction. Hampton Manor is the country estate of erstwhile prime minister and ‘inventor’ of the police force, Sir Robert Peel. Our imposing suite is named after George Fentham – a successful local business man and philanthropist born in the village, Hampton in Arden, in 1630. Other rooms also pay tribute to local dignitaries and help anchor the building in this overlooked garden of England. Hampton in Arden is mentioned in the Domesday book, but the NEC has rather taken over as Birmingham’s most established landmark. The house is Gothic Tudor – the taste of Sir Robert’s son Frederick, who rebuilt it in the 19th century. It’s not just a restaurant, let’s be clear, there are treatment rooms and ample lounging space on fashionable velvet sofas, but the focus rarely moves from food. There’s a tasting room, where you

can see the chefs at work, a parlour for tea, and an ingenious idea in the heart of the house called ‘the maker’s table’, where guests can pull up a stool to taste wine. We took our evening drinks on the terrace – homemade rhubarb gin – accompanied by delicious snacks, with a view of the leafy garden which slopes down to fields of grazing sheep beyond. Bear in mind there is a well-loved kitchen garden within the 45 acres and everything is pointing towards a first-class dinner. Our four courses are served in the glorious dining room (the Michelin-starred Peel’s restaurant), which has the loveliest hand-painted silk wallpaper I’ve ever seen (Fromental, apparently). Arts and Crafts is the era of choice for all of the interiors; William Morris is the muse. Each of our courses is served with passion and knowledge. Roasted broccoli is followed by crab XO with Jerusalem artichoke, coriander and lime; Longhorn beef comes with cauliflower, Tunworth (cheese) and black garlic. Treacle pudding and an array of English cheeses almost defeats us, but we are brave. Wine pairings include a Chardonnay from South Tooting. In a laudable example of teamwork, the grapes are grown in France but the wine is created in London. The whole Hampton Manor team – led by James and Fjona Hill – is clearly obsessed by food and wine. Innovation is championed alongside warmth and conviviality and the combination is a triumph.

A TREASURED ISLAND
Mykonos might be known as a luxurious party island from dusk till dawn, but there’s plenty to see and do in the daylight hours, too by Emma Vince
“Mykonos. Isn’t that like the Ibiza of Greece?” So says my taxi driver as he whisks me off to Gatwick at 4.40am. I tell him that’s what I’ve heard and doze all the way to the airport with dreams of flashy beach parties, luxurious hotels and bronzed celebrities whirling through my mind. Boarding the plane, I’m surrounded by glamorous hen parties wearing surprisingly tasteful ‘Team Bride’ tees, all chattering excitedly about their plans to party until sunrise in Mykonos Town, the main hub of bars and nightlife. I’m learning that Mykonos is an island with a reputation that precedes it, but I’m excited to see what else it has to offer beyond the partying. From the moment I touch down, I’m struck by how beautiful the island is. Against a rugged, hilly backdrop, everything shines in white and

blue, the colours of the Greek national flag. From the window of the car, cobalt shutters and domes flash past, the blindingly white buildings tumbling down toward the sea like scattered sugar cubes. So far, so scenic, and we haven’t even reached the hotel yet…
The Myconian Collection
For unparalleled views and unstuffy luxury, there’s only one place to stay on Mykonos. Or rather, one collection of hotels, with nine resorts dispersed across the island. Founded by George and Eleftheria Daktylides, and now managed by their four sons, the collection is a family venture. Just like the members of a family, each property is unique, with the same building blocks at heart: distinctive interior design, a gourmet restaurant and a luxury spa.
Five of the resorts are tucked away above Elia Beach. While they share similar views over the Aegean Sea, each is a bespoke boutique hotel in its own right, with a distinct look and feel. Among these are the metropolitan Myconian Imperial Resort, the exclusive Myconian Villa Collection, home to velvet-clad sun loungers and a fine dining restaurant, and the quirkymeets-luxe Myconian Utopia Resort with driftwood sculptures and a picture-perfect infinity pool. Unlike some of the other Cycladic islands, Mykonos is blessed with gloriously sandy beaches, and all five resorts have access to a private area of Elia Beach below. To the south of the island lies the chic Myconian Ambassador hotel designed in traditional white and blue with a vast umbrellafringed pool. The final three resorts perch on

a hillside overlooking Mykonos Town and the west coast. This is the view I see when I check in to the Myconian Kyma hotel, throw open my window shutters and step out onto the balcony. With shining, white-washed terraces and rooms with their own private pools (tip: book a Mediterranean Suite for the ultimate private infinity pool), Kyma is a relaxed haven, despite its location just a short drive from all the action of Mykonos Town. Thanks to its thoughtful architecture and art-filled interiors, it’s also easy to see why Kyma is a member of Design Hotels. Its newly opened Noa restaurant serves contemporary Greek food; I dine on melt-inyour-mouth feta crumbled over salads, creamy tzatziki, fresh mezes and sticky orange cake, all served with a side of panoramic sea views.
Experience the real Mykonos
To help guests explore the island in a more meaningful way, the Myconian Collection has curated a new, exclusive programme of experiences. And so, the next day, I visit Rizes Folklore Farmstead to learn all about traditional life in Mykonos before it became such a tourism hotspot. Our guide explains that each farmstead is like a self-sufficient village, with a multi-generational family living and working there. I (quite literally) get to sample local flavour with a brunch of fresh eggs and homemade cheese, bread and lemonade, the latter of which is so sweet it makes my tongue tingle like sunshine. Wandering around the olive groves and small, traditional buildings couldn’t be further from the glitz and glamour usually associated with Mykonos, and yet, in a way, this is the real Mykonos.
A step back in time
to forget this important archaeological site is just a 30-minute boat trip from the bustling shorefront of Mykonos Town.
Mykonos Town by day
Wandering about Mykonos Town during the day is nothing like being on the ‘strip’ in other renowned party towns. Instead, I amble down winding pathways between whitewashed, bougainvillea-draped boutiques. Every street is an Instagrammer’s dream, and I take full advantage. I stop to pose for a photo in front of the Kato Mili windmills. As ‘The Island of the Winds’, the wood-and-straw windmills were once an important part of Mykonos’ pretourism economy; now they’re an iconic part of the town’s shorefront. Evenings in Greece are the highlight of any given day, with long lazy dinners to round off an afternoon of exploring. From Mykonos Town’s position on the west coast I’m rewarded with a spectacular sunset each night, where, for once, the island swaps its whites and blues for rose-tinted buildings and orange streaked skies. Little Venice is the best spot to catch the show, with a sundowner in hand. Here, the bars hug the furthest edge of the land, perching right on the side of the sea. For those here to party, it’s the start of a night of revels. For me, it’s the close of another peaceful day in paradise.
Colourful embroidered runners and cushions inject personality to the white rooms at the Myconian Villa Collection
Classic Collection Holidays (0800 047 1064; classic-collection.co.uk) offer 7 nights at Myconian Kyma from £1,496 per person. Price based on 2 adults sharing an Apollon deluxe garden view room on a bed and breakfast basis and includes return flights from London Gatwick and private transfers. Room upgrade: Ocean junior suite sea view from £137 to £166 per person per night depending on season.

From history to ancient history, my next experience is a trip to the small, uninhabited island of Delos. Way back in the day, Delos overshadowed its neighbour Mykonos as the legendary birthplace of Apollo, becoming a hub of both religion and trade. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Delos is known as the ‘Garden of the Gods’. My guide leads me through the remains of the ancient civilisation, which was preserved underground for years before excavations began in 1872. I step into the unearthed ruins of shops and theatres and admire the freestanding columns, mosaics and statues of longforgotten Greek nobles. Surrounded by peaceful meadows of wildflowers and the odd purring cat, it’s easy

IN THE S A swimming pool is the ultimate residential luxury. The stuff of dream home fantasies, in fact. Whether inside or out, on the surface of it, only a lucky few of us have the space, but with shrewd design ideas there are possibilities: dig down to create an underground home spa; use clever lighting techniques to bring the sunshine in; or make a splash with a multipurpose space that morphs into a pool room at the push of a button by Ali Howard

fabricmagazine.co.uk
Design briefs don’t come much more ambitious than this (below). The owners of a large new build house in the suburbs wanted to create an indoor pool that could be hidden away, allowing the space to transform into a modern ballroom. The design required a hydraulic floor for the pool, and carefully selected stone for the main surface, ensuring strength and chemical resistance as well as the ability to withstand any scratches and stains that come with a heavy footfall. A revolutionary ultra-compact surface, Dekton by Cosentino, more than did the job with its elegant aesthetic that gives the room a suitably luxurious finish. (cosentino.com) Swimming pools can come in all shapes and sizes. Limited square footage could be an issue, but to an architect worth their salt, it’s an exciting challenge to rise to. In this Notting Hill townhouse (below, right), a compact, elongated
pool is brought to life with clever lighting that gives the otherwise stark space a cosy, home spa feel. Lighting design practice Nulty were tasked with complementing the room’s minimalist architecture. A line of illumination around the pool is playfully reflected in the water, creating warmth and movement, while the double-height space at the rear is softly lit to give a serene feel. (nultylighting.co.uk)
While an outdoor swimming pool has its obvious benefits, an indoor design can be enjoyed year-round. But why settle for either/ or when you can have the very best of both worlds? Octagon Bespoke, whose raison d’être is delivering dream homes, offer one example that allows for luxurious indoor/outdoor living, whatever the weather. In this modern manor of a new build (bottom), a sizeable indoor pool
WIM lies under a ceiling of glass sky lights, protecting swimmers from the elements yet keeping the space light and bright, while a full wall of fold back glass doors opens up the space beautifully on sunnier days. (octagonbespoke.com)
A residential swimming pool, despite its reputation as a barometer of affluence and excess, isn’t just for lounging. With the rise of the home gym comes a more functional approach to home pools – at times we want to put in some serious lengths rather than float off on an inflatable flamingo, piña colada in hand. Increasingly, homeowners are digging down to create a subterranean pool room that doesn’t rely on natural rays, but which recreates a luxurious hotel spa with ambient mood lighting. Take inspiration from the sumptuous 20m swimming pool (right), complete with Jacuzzi and private gym, at Holland Park Villas. (hollandparkvillas.com)
(c) James French
Another residential swimming pool from Octagon Bespoke that not only ups the luxury game, but which belies the British weather, is this heated outdoor infinity pool in the grounds of a grand family house. Carved dramatically into the very landscape of the new build’s plot, the design makes the most of its undulating surrounds – look outwards and you’re immediately at one with nature, seemingly without the confines of concrete. You’ll need a commodious back yard to install an outdoor swimming pool with a vanishing edge, but if you are spatially blessed, the horizon’s the limit. (octagonbespoke.com)

Anastasiya Malysheva Entrepreneur
This young, fashion-forward businesswoman initially rented her two-bed flat in central London, but it was only once she’d bought it that she could really call it home – with more than a little help from interior designer Sonia Pash and her ingenious storage solutions by Ali Howard
How has owning the flat improved your lifestyle? The change was incredible. I rented the flat furnished for a year before buying it, and even after all that time it didn’t feel like home. There’s something deeply demotivating about living with generic, low-quality rental furniture packages. The flat itself was charming but the furniture was unsuitable and there wasn’t enough storage. When I saw it after the fit-out I couldn’t believe it was the same space, the change was immense and it felt immediately homely. How did you work with Sonia and the Temza team to create the look? They took me through some beautiful colour schemes and design options, and they had some excellent ideas on how to maximise the space. We went through everything, right down to the size of my handbags, making sure to find the perfect storage solutions for all my items. It’s amazing how easy it is to keep the flat looking tidy when everything has its place.
Tell me about the use of colour and texture We picked lots of light, warm neutrals as the base, then layered it with blushes and darker blues, which makes it look stylish, but also very lived in. The textures are exceptionally playful; lots of geometric patterns that connect the rooms. The master bedroom has a diamond patterned wallpaper and that’s echoed in the bedside tables, which are three dimensional in texture. What’s your go-to brand for interiors? Amara is my absolute favourite; they have only great pieces! Their collection’s curated from different manufacturers so you can browse for anything you need in one place, which is useful if you’re not familiar with all the interior brands out there. Can you talk me through some of the hidden storage spaces in the apartment? In the hallway there are large bronze mirrored panels with coat storage behind them.

And the storage bench is a great addition: it has various compartments for hats, gloves, scarves and all those other bits and bobs you never quite know where to put. You could easily miss the bespoke shoe storage, which is my favourite of all the joinery. Temza did a fantastic job here and turned a dead area into the most functional space. When they first showed me the design I thought it was a dream! And how did they manage to accommodate your sartorial collection? We have completely redesigned the wardrobe to make it much more practical – there were lots of unused corners before, which are now optimised. The upside-down U-shaped storage in the second bedroom was entirely the design team’s idea. It’s the perfect space for suitcases. The design is really smart: the nook in the middle accommodates a sofa bed, and there’s a niche on either side that functions as a bedside table. How does the living room successfully marry form and function? It has some beautiful additions! The bespoke media unit is a real feature with its natural brass dividers, and the bespoke desk area echoes the design, so everything looks pretty neat together. Still, they both have quite a lot of closed storage, so I have space for all my important papers and folders, which is an absolute must if you have a home office. Which is your favourite room? My wardrobe! Everyone’s going crazy right now about decluttering your closet and getting rid of half your clothes. And if that makes you happy, you should do that. But what you can do instead is get your wardrobe professionally designed to maximise the storage space and keep all your clothes. Now, doesn’t that sound a thousand times more appealing? temza.co.uk

Regent’s Park
With the majority of local housing stock coming in the form of stuccoed terraces, all Grade I and Grade II listed, Regent’s Park locals are lucky folk indeed. In the early 1800s, architect John Nash (of Brighton Pavilion fame), at the request of the Prince Regent, designed a vast rounded park with an ornamental lake and landscaped gardens, surrounded by palatial terraces – it remains very much the same to this day. Enjoying unrivalled views of the calm, manicured spaces of the Royal park, residents also benefit from having the very best of Marylebone, St. John’s Wood and Primrose Hill’s amenities on their doorstep, not to mention being perfectly positioned to make the most of what’s on offer in central London. This is urban living at its most civilised; no surprise, then, that properties here are some of the most sought after in the Capital
Did you know? A little over a hundred years ago, London Zoo welcomed a black American bear named Winnipeg. Nicknamed Winnie, she was mascot for a Canadian regiment fighting in the First World War, who gifted her to the zoo on their way to fight across the Channel in France. Having been handreared following the death of her mother, she was good natured and loved human company. She soon became a well-loved character with visitors to the zoo, notably with author A. A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin, whose fondness for the bear was immortalised in the classic tales of Winnie-the-Pooh.

Arlington Residential “With over 400 acres of gardens, an outdoor theatre and a boating lake, Regent’s Park is great for family days out. You’ll find some of the finest homes in London within the stucco Nash terraces of the Outer Circle, with Cumberland Terrace offering some of the most elegant apartments, and Chester Terrace and Hanover Terrace offering family houses set back from the road behind beautiful gardens.”
Zach Madison Savills
“Regent’s Park is an exclusive area that appeals to a cross-section of superprime buyers. There’s a variety of property types in the area; most famously, the park itself is lined with grand terraces designed by John Nash. When it comes to prices, being close to green space commands a significant premium – as much as 24 per cent for properties neighbouring the park.”

founder and creator at Ormonde Jayne Perfumery “I’ve lived in this area for 20 years and the best thing is the amount of lush green parkland surrounding us. At least four times a week, after dropping off our children at school, I start the day with a 5km jog in Regent’s Park. I never get tired of it: watching Tai Chi groups at dawn, or American students playing Ultimate Frisbee. I’m also about to go for my first outdoor trapeze session at the Gorilla Circus in Regent’s Park, which will be a test of nerves! If it’s a weekend, we are members of the Regent’s Park Tennis Club and we can now play doubles with our two sons and hold amazing rallies – it’s the best fun. Our other favourite institution is the Open Air Theatre – it’s still a novelty to be able to walk to the theatre, sit under the stars, have a roast chicken

For eating out I love Gordon Ramsay’s York & Albany and I still pop back to my old area for Harry Morgan’s chicken soup. If it’s a special occasion, Odette’s is unbeatable. My other local favourites are Joshua Altack for the best blowdry in the world and Richard Dare’s kitchen shop, which is a haven of high quality glasses, eggcups and everything in between, and I can’t not mention their amazing customer service.” ormondejayne.com

Local heroes ZSL London Zoo
For Jeremy Rosenblatt of Dexters, this world-famous animal enclosure is a no-brainer when it comes to recommending a Regent’s Park local hero. “Even if you’re not visiting the Zoo itself,” he says, “you may hear the squawk of a unique bird, or a lion’s rumbling roar, or you could be going for a stroll through the park and before you know it you’re next to the giraffe enclosure. A recent, and popular, addition to the London Zoo family is a two-toed sloth named Elio, who was born in May this year.” Outer Circle, NW1 (0344 225 1826; zsl.org)
Open Air Theatre
This much-loved amphitheatre, tucked away in the heart of leafy Regent’s Park, is a gem for London’s theatre lovers who fancy a change of pace from the always-bustling West End. “It is truly magical,” says Dean Whitley from Chancellors, “particularly when you get a warm summer’s evening under the stars. I’ve seen a number of productions here and they often feature a Shakespeare play. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which runs until 27 July, is the obvious classic. Not to be missed.” Inner Circle, Regent’s Park, NW1 (openairtheatre.com)
Oslo Court
Undoubtedly one for in-the-know locals, this hidden gem of an eatery is set within an unassuming residential block. You’d be forgiven, then, for passing it by, but you mustn’t pass up the chance to dine here. Recommended by Emlyn Parks from Chestertons, not least for the restaurant’s proximity to Regent’s Park, you can expect a menu full of French classics delivered to your linen-covered table with old school charm. FOR THE LOVE OF SPORT ACKNOWLEDGING ITS IMPACT ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND STUDENT WELLBEING, ONE NORTH LONDON SCHOOL EXPLAINS WHY IT HAS CHOSEN TO TAKE A MORE MODERN APPROACH TO TEACHING SPORT
*Research from the Youth Sport Trust, October 2018.
T
here’s no doubt about the many benefits of regular physical activity, from improved physical and mental health to the proven positive effect on academic achievement. But with teenage angst, exam pressure and the seeming need for large school grounds, sport still has to compete for its place on the curriculum. While 38 per cent of English secondary schools have cut timetabled PE for 14 to 16-yearolds*, North Bridge House Senior Canonbury, perhaps unexpectedly, proves that sport can be a success in small but high-achieving schools. The quaint Grade II listed Tudor home to 11 to 18-year-olds is without on-site sport facilities and is known for its outstanding results – 27 per cent 9 grades at GCSE, and 28 per cent A*-A at A-Level – in the classroom as opposed to on the pitch. With 18 different sports on the curriculum however, and 14 additional after school sports, the school’s unique offering challenges that of more traditional private schools and has a clear impact on students’ academic performance, as well as their physical, social and emotional wellbeing. “We take a more modern approach to sport than a lot of independent schools:
rather than focusing on one sport per term, rugby or netball for example, we try to provide as many different activities as possible and find that one sport for everyone,” says the school’s Head of PE, Dan O’Neil. With the growing concern around mental wellbeing in young people, as well as childhood obesity, NBH Senior Canonbury’s aim is for students to find a lifelong enthusiasm for sport, promoting physical education as part of a deep, rich and exciting curriculum. “Students may not find that enthusiasm in traditional sports, particularly if they have not made the Sunday league first team or just aren’t stereotypically athletic, but they may do from alternatives like kayaking, climbing, or mountain biking,” continues the Head of PE. “It is important that young people
have the opportunity to express and challenge themselves physically, work together as well as individually, and experience a variety of different environments and activities.” NBH Senior Canonbury’s prime north London location facilitates its broad sporting curriculum, with students frequenting the best facilities for outdoor adventure and water sports, as well yoga, martial arts and fitness classes. From the Sobell Leisure Centre to Highbury Fields and Lee Valley White Water Centre, all students are exposed to the 18 sports on the curriculum in Years 7 and 8, revisiting them in Years 9 and 10 to develop their skills and interests. Nearly all those sports are then available at GCSE, with core sport still on the curriculum for students not taking PE as a GCSE option. Students do particularly well in individual sports, with NBH Senior
Canonbury also helping to engage them in specialist coaching outside of school. With a sister double act who have become renowned national swimming champions, as well as a shot putt gold medallist and now regional representative in the ISA (Independent School’s Association) Athletics Competition, the school is equally committed to promoting girls in sport. However, even for pupils who, when they join the school, do not identify with sport, NBH Senior Canonbury uses its PE lessons to engage the many, boost selfconfidence, replace adolescent insecurities with self-esteem, and encourage a strong competitive spirit, proving that, in sport, there’s something for everyone. Regent High School What attracted you to the school? Its ethos and vision as a community school that seeks the best for its students and their families. Regent High School is a dynamic, innovative, inclusive school that supports its students to achieve academically, socially and culturally.
THOUGHT PIECE
A league of their own You wouldn’t buy a car just because Jeremy Clarkson likes it. So why would you choose a school just because it tops a league table? “League tables aren’t without value, but they’re a blunt instrument,” says Brendan Pavey, head of North Bridge House Senior Hampstead. “They only allow you to compare schools by exam results – there’s no data on the other benefits of attending, or the ability of the children going in.” What’s more, schools obsessed with league tables may ignore the fact that children develop at different stages. Which could lead them to turn down 11-year-olds who go on to ace their GCSEs. A constant focus on exam results can also encourage children to focus on shortterm, rather than lifelong learning. “All this puts a lot of stress on the child, and totally goes against our belief that their welfare comes first,” says Brendan. This belief is also why Brendan favours mixedability education – but what exactly does that mean? “Even the most selective school is mixed ability, as there can only ever be one child at the top of the class,” he explains. “We’re different in
that we define ability as strength at any topic, not just English or maths. So our range of abilities is broader.” This approach allows North Bridge House to celebrate every child’s strengths, wherever they lie. “We design our GCSE curriculum so children have a free choice in the subjects they take,” says Brendan. “This means they love what they do, while learning to appreciate difference and have an open mind.” Parents are increasingly recognising the value, too – especially when they see the results. “It’s a nice surprise to our parents to discover that our results are way above the national average,” says Brendan. “But that’s secondary. Our primary motivation is to create an inspiring education.” If you’re still struggling with the idea of mixed ability, Brendan has this advice. “Listen to what universities and employers say they’re looking for: young people who are collaborative, creative and resilient, with practical as well as academic ability. A school like ours can develop those skills while bringing out the best in every child.” northbridgehouse.com

What makes it different? We place great pride in our network of partners, who support what we do in and beyond the classroom. We’re the only secondary school member of the Knowledge Quarter, working alongside 100 knowledge-rich organisations within a mile of King’s Cross. We offered over 100 trips last year, and worked with partner schools in Europe, to give our students and staff opportunities to learn more about the worlds of study and work. We also have a phenomenally hardworking team that I’m hugely proud to lead. How would you describe the atmosphere? Fantastic! I love walking around the school during lesson time and seeing students working hard to achieve their ambitions. What’s your personal educational ethos? I believe very firmly in education as a tool for social mobility. Education allows disadvantaged young people to walk shoulderto-shoulder with their more affluent peers. ASK THE AGENT
What should a good agent be doing to market my property in the current market? Peter Rickenberg
Bective Leslie Marsh
“Your agent should be giving you realistic advice, although you must realise he or she is also trying to win your business, and these two points can sometimes conflict. The Brexit market is tough but there is a market and your agent should be giving you options, even if you don’t like them. This will often be down to price, and a good agent will be providing as much evidence as possible on market activity. This means they should have knowledge of the whole market and not just their own stock, recent sales and general market sentiment. A good agent will also be keeping a keen eye on marketing. If your property has been on the market for a while it may need freshening up, maybe new photos and a relaunch to make sure it’s at the top end of portal listings and social media platforms. All the above requires a good agent in a good firm, who has real market knowledge and connections. Don’t be afraid to ask for their most realistic advice as it may well lead to a sale!

I love London because… it remains a powerful media, business and cultural hub and is still considered an influential city. It offers outstanding educational opportunities, business and financial services; a talented workforce and it remains one of the top tourist destinations on the planet. What’s not to love! First London home? A fourbed post-war semi in NW9, which is now situated in one of the Mayor of London’s top regeneration zones. The area is seeing tremendous growth. If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… a happy philanthropist. If not London, where? I don’t think that anywhere really compares to London in terms of a sound long-term property investment. Favourite place? Hampstead Heath. Discovering nature with my young grandchildren is relaxing and fun. Who would you like to take out in London? David Cameron for a pep talk: What the heck did you do? Aliens attack – which London landmark would you save? If Her Majesty the Queen is not in residence at Buckingham Palace, then I would save the Houses of Parliament as it’s one of the most striking and recognisable architectural landmarks the world over. Tower Bridge would be a close runner-up. Creature comfort? My driver! I couldn’t pack in so many appointments without him.
