July 2021

The definitive guide to London living Editor’s letter Liz Skone James If you’d normally be jetting off to foreign lands around now, we’re here to introduce you to the delights of holidaying at home. Firstly, you might not be spending hours poolside on a lounger, but you’ll still need a summer read, and that comes courtesy of cover star Jessie Cave. She tells us that she was inspired to write her brilliantly bittersweet debut novel after unexpectedly losing her brother in 2019. Read what she has to say about the power of creativity in our revealing interview. Meanwhile, our staycation wardrobe comes courtesy of new London label By Committee, whose easy-wear silk separates are the definition of cool (whichever definition you choose). And we don’t need to leave home to feast on worldwide cuisine this month – Middle Eastern marvellousness, Spanish simplicity and heavenly Hungarian are all on the cards, as you’ll discover on our food pages. Holiday entertainment comes courtesy of a host of exhibitions and performances right here in the Capital, and I couldn’t be happier to see real life events filling our schedules again. Finally, as you’ll be saving all that holiday money, how about splashing out on home renovations? This season’s big ticket improvement is glazing. Forget boring bifolds, we show you windows with wow. Happy holidays.

God’s Own Junkyard: Electric City Until 31 July, Leadenhall Market

In a two month long takeover of the historic Leadenhall Market, eminent neon artists God’s Own Junkyard present a dazzling immersive production. If you don’t know the studio, it’s likely you’ll know their work. Founded by the late Chris Bracey and now in the hands of his wife Linda and sons Mathew and Marcus, they’re responsible for bringing to life the visual landscapes of some of the biggest movies, including Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut. In the 1999 film, parts of Greenwich Village were recreated, sign by sign, by the team. “We’ve spent around 40 years working on film sets,” says Linda. “There are many items and anecdotes that haven’t seen the light of day that people might like to see and hear about.” Installations include works from Judge Dredd, The Dark Knight, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Tomb Raider. A must-see for the Capital’s dedicated film buffs – and the rest of us? A truly enlightening experience. Leadenhall Market, EC3V (godsownjunkyard.co.uk)

THEATRE

The Two Character Play 17 July-28 August, Hampstead Theatre

With such a rich history, Hampstead Theatre looks into its own archive for inspiration this summer, as Tennessee Williams’ innovative psychological thriller is restaged. The play received its world premiere at Hampstead back in 1967 and, as is the case with much of the American playwright’s work, it remains as powerful and pertinent to today’s audiences. Williams described it as: “My most beautiful play since Streetcar, the very heart of my life.” Directed by Olivier-nominated Sam Yates, and starring Kate O’Flynn and Zubin Varla, the drama follows Clare and Felice, siblings and fellow actors who’ve been on tour for far too long. Abandoned by the rest of their troupe in a decrepit “state theatre in an unknown state,” all that’s left is each other, an empty stage, and an expectant audience. MUSICAL

Come From Away

22 July-February 2022, Phoenix Theatre What better way to mark the return of live theatre post-pandemic than with an uplifting musical that celebrates humanity at its very best? This international hit show first opened in the West End in March 2019, following sell-out stints on Broadway and a whopping 60-city North American tour. It’s up there with Hamilton as far as devoted audiences and critics are concerned, with a glittering collection of gongs – including four Oliviers – to its name. The musical tells the true story of a small town in Newfoundland, which welcomed almost 7,000 stranded air passengers in the immediate wake of the 9/11 attacks. The confused grounded travellers came from 38 diverted planes and from over 100 different countries. Inevitably, cultures clashed at first, but when uneasiness turned into trust, and the music played into the night, gratitude grew into enduring friendships. A feel-good frolic we all deserve. MOVING ON Actor, comedian and illustrator Jessie Cave reveals how grief shaped her debut novel, and explains why humour helps her to dust herself off and carry on when life gives her lemons WORDS by LIZ SKONE JAMES

fter Jessie Cave’s brother Ben died suddenly, following a tragic accident in 2019, she describes feeling like her world had collapsed. “It was game over for us as a family in a million ways,” she reveals. “But we had to find a way of living and doing good and finding meaningful things and reasons to be here and human.” For Jessie, that was writing. “I was looking for things to read about sudden traumatic loss,” she explains, “and there were all the usual books that you are told to read when something like this happens – about grief, and the stages of grief, and what to do in this type of situation, and they are all very formulaic and didn’t make sense to me. And I found there was very little about sibling loss.” She had known for some time that she wanted to write a book but did not initially know what form this would take – the answer came during this period. Sunset, Jessie’s debut novel has just been published in hardback by Welbeck. It tells the story of sisters Hannah and Ruth – perplexingly different, they are bonded by love, and together, make an invincible team. But one summer, a tragic accident occurs, and it changes everything. Heart-breaking and at the same time achingly funny, the book is a deeply moving exploration of the strength of sibling love. “It is completely inspired by my relationship with my sister,” Jessie tells me, referring to younger sister Bebe Cave, with whom she presents hit podcast We Can’t Talk About That Right Now. “The sisters in the story are kind of opposites in many ways, but they are best friends, and they are dependent on each other. It is about a tragedy, an accident happening. The worst thing that could happen to one of them happens, and the book looks at how the other sister deals with that. This is a book that is completely clouded in death, but also quite hopeful, if that is possible.” Reviews ahead of the book’s release were overwhelmingly good, with Dolly

Alderton describing it as “phenomenal” and Sara Pascoe warning that it would “break your heart and put it back together again.” Jessie is understandably grateful for the positive response. “I think I would’ve absolutely been devastated if that hadn’t happened, so I feel reassured by that. But at the same time, I am prepared for it not to be loved by everybody, and for it to be quite a niche thing. I am open to that,” she shrugs. Fleabag-esque, it is filthy in places and astonishingly raw, so it is entirely possible that it will divide opinion, though it will certainly appeal to fans of Jessie’s other work. Consumed by her brother’s death, Jessie says that she found the writing process very difficult, but that being able to express her feelings of grief was deeply cathartic. “It was a complete coping thing for me. It saved me in a lot of ways – it was absolutely an ordeal to write, but I think that if I had not had it to write, I would have been a lot worse off. So, I am grateful to writing,” she tells me. “I had to sign loads of books on Saturday, and I was looking through the pages, because I haven’t looked at it since a couple of months ago – and I was just staggered, because I wouldn’t be able to write that now, because I was at a different stage of grief. It is fiction, and it isn’t me, and it isn’t the same accident or the same relationship, but it is definitely rooted in real life experience, and knowing what it is like to go through something quite traumatic. I find the act of creating things incredibly therapeutic – I am always aware that awful things can, and do, happen, but that there is some power in reclaiming those things, and writing about them, or performing something about them, or drawing something about them… There is always something positive that can come out of the worst things. And especially with grief,” she explains. It was acting that first brought her into the spotlight, notably playing Lavender Brown in the Harry Potter franchise, but Jessie is perhaps best

known for critically acclaimed solo shows I Loved Her (2015) and Sunrise (2018). Together they chronicled her somewhat unconventional relationship with partner, fellow comedian Alfie Brown – from a one-night stand that resulted in Jessie getting pregnant, to starting dating, having another baby and breaking up, then starting to date other men as a single mum (the couple have since reunited and had a third child together late last year). Nakedly autobiographical, emotionally intelligent, and unflinchingly honest, the shows laid bare her innermost thoughts, sparing absolutely no detail. “It is my natural response to try and find humour in things,” Jessie explains, when I ask whether she has ever regretted sharing so much of herself. “I think that it is something that I learnt from awkward things happening early on in life and having to decide if it was going to break me, or if I was going to carry on. I have always found comedy to be the easiest therapy. I did Sunrise over 150 times. Towards the end it felt like nothing to me to stand on stage and reveal this stuff about myself.” That said, she came back to the show earlier this year, when she was asked to produce a video recording for Soho Theatre’s on demand streaming service. Performing to an audience consisting of just Bebe, she was surprised at her own reaction to the material. “Doing it again, two years later, after my brother dying, I realised that my skin had become a lot thinner. I am more vulnerable now, to everything,” she admits. “It was like, ‘oh, wow, this is way too personal, what the hell was I doing?’ And now that my kids are older, and they are not babies anymore… Writing about some of the stuff that I did… I was a different person.” Which is not to say that she has any regrets, quite the opposite, in fact. “It is great, because I can look back at it now and go, OK, that was me at 30, or whatever age, and now I am a different person, and I am glad that I documented it, otherwise I wouldn’t remember who I was.” Jessie, who went to art school, also has a large following for her relationship-based doodles, which she sells from an online shop, and her first book of illustrations, Lovesick, was published by Ebury in 2015. With so many creative hats to wear, I ask how she would classify her work. “I don’t know, I guess I make things,” she shrugs. “I find it a bit embarrassing

sometimes when people ask me what I do, because I genuinely do not know how to answer. And I look a bit mad when I say, ‘oh, well I’ve done this, and this, and this…’ What is so great about creativity is the power of doing it yourself. There is more freedom to do different things and to wear different hats. I think if I had known at 18 that I could do five different things, I would’ve been a lot happier as an adolescent, or a young adult – I could’ve been more relaxed about what I was going to do with my life. I would say, from my heart, that I write, and I always have, but I sometimes do other things,” she concludes. If it is confusing for her, it is even more so for her kids – the eldest are now six and four. “The bulk of their lives has been me working on Sunrise or Sunset: they think that everything I do has sun in the title. So, they’re like, ‘what are you going to do next mummy? I think you should call it moon something!’ So, I have to go along with the lie that the next thing I do is going to be called Moonrise,” she laughs. “It is very sweet.” Fitting any type of career around three small kids must be hard, but for now, writing is something that Jessie finds works well alongside parenting. “I think because I have always worked on top of the kids – because I have no choice, I am a desperate freelancer – I am quite good at working efficiently in small periods of time,” she explains, recalling how she got Sunset finished in what has been a difficult year for everybody, but especially so for Jessie who was also pregnant. “I am quite good at knowing that I have got half a day and filling that time. In the second lockdown, when I was editing the book, my mum lived with us, and I was able to just go upstairs and she home-schooled my kids while I wrote. And the book was supposed to be finished before my baby was born, but he came early – he decided to arrive literally the week of my deadline. So, something that should’ve taken me a week took me four months in the end. But, you know, I had to just get on with it. I think I am still recovering in a way… But, yeah, my mum is everything. We have all learnt from the best mother in the world.” Fans will know that alongside her grandparent duties, Jessie’s mum plays a big part in bringing her stories to life, hand sewing props and backdrops for shows and podcasts. “She was a doctor, but she should’ve been something creative – that’s why she has always been so brilliant at encouraging me to do what I wanted to do,” Jessie explains. Continuing the theme, her needlework has also been used on the cover of Sunset. “When I was told that I was allowed to do the cover myself, I immediately knew she should do it: it was a no brainer. And I think for people who have known me other than for this book, and who have seen my work, they will know that it is her.” With book number one hot off the press, Jessie is already working on her second. “It will be completely different, and hopefully not called Moonrise,” she laughs. “It focuses on the first character that I ever drew at art school, where I was told that I couldn’t draw! I would always draw the same character, and they would say that I needed to try different things. And I was like, no, but this is my character… This is the story about that character. Initially I did write it as a young adult book, when I decided that I wanted to write longer form, but I have since decided to come back to it and make it adult.” Jessie is hoping to have it completed within a year but knows that deadlines can and do move. Equally as important, right now, is spending time with her kids and being present for them. “I am so aware that time is going so fast. I am in a very weird phase of grief, and realising that life is just incredibly short, and you have got to make the most of it. So really, I have just been trying to enjoy the moment a bit more,” she explains. It feels like this is Jessie’s moment, so here’s hoping that she can enjoy it. Sunset is out now in hardback (Welbeck, £12.99); Sunrise is available to stream on Soho Theatre On Demand (sohotheatreondemand.com) and Jessie’s podcast is on YouTube each Thursday

working alternate days. When they are in the salon, they are only seeing one client at a time – whereas in the past they might have applied one client’s colour, and then moved onto another’s cut while it developed. It means that there are fewer people in the salon at any one time. I have to say that I like this new, quieter vibe – it is easier to chat, and feels much more exclusive. I confess to the dye digressions and explain that I have flirted with embracing my greys. Nick thinks it’s too soon – for which my other half, who is against this plan, will be grateful. He suggests that in addition to my usual balayage and tint, I could experiment with some babylights in the root area – alongside these, the greys will be less noticeable when they grow back through. I am happy to let him take the lead. Express yourself with personalised colour and a new, individual cut

It’s been eight long months since my hair was last tended to professionally, during which time there has been a brief flirtation with DIY dye and a little trimming of split ends. About which my hairdresser Nick is impressively diplomatic. I can tell that he’s itching to get to work rectifying my wrongs though, and I probably don’t need to tell you that the feeling is mutual. I’m in Charles Worthington’s bright and airy flagship salon, in the heart of trendy Fitzrovia. The neighbourhood, I am happy to report, is buzzing. It’s one of my first trips into the centre of London since lockdown, and I couldn’t be happier to be back. The salon itself is an oasis of calm, though, which may be due to the Covid precautions that have been put in place. Nick tells me that the team have formed two bubbles,

And breathe The past year has been especially overwhelming for children; North Londoner Dr Kiki Morriss believes that yoga may help them to cope. She herself fell in love with the practice aged six, when she took a class in a friend’s playroom. Having studied medicine at King’s College, London, and trained as a yoga teacher at the Sivananda Ashram, Canada (going on to qualify as a yoga therapist with the Yoga Biomedical Trust, London and as a pregnancy yoga teacher with Birthlight), she set up Primrose Hill Yoga – combining her skills to provide a unique, holistic approach to health. She offers group and one-to-one classes from a beautiful studio in her Primrose Hill home – though these are currently online due to the pandemic – and has always been particularly interested in sharing the transformative power of yoga with children and their parents. So much so that she has just released a book designed to do just that. Nurturing Your Family with

Yoga (YogaWords, £16.99) shows how yoga can be a part of everyday family life, bringing happiness and harmony to the home. It’s packed with fun and practical suggestions, including the A–Z of Yoga – an engaging game that introduces children to 26 classic yoga poses; breathing exercises to strengthen and balance the nervous system and steady the mind; visualisations to reduce anxiety and build resilience; and a ‘Yoga in Bed’ sequence to help children settle down to sleep. There are guided meditations, affirmations and reflections that will inspire and inform interesting and thoughtful discussions with children, as well as tips and tricks to help adults to share yoga with their children successfully. We think it is an invaluable tool as we navigate these challenging times. Nuturing Your Family with Yoga is available now from Amazon and leading bookstores. Cruella Afternoon Tea at The Lanesborough I confess, though I’ve missed eating out during lockdown, I’ve come to relish the fact that, come teatime, I can lock the door and pop my PJs on without any fear of missing out. And I’m not quite ready to relinquish the 10pm bedtime yet, even though, in theory, I could be painting the town red every night… I’m sure it’s temporary, and that I’ll find my evening mojo soon, but in the meantime, I’m making up for it with brunches and afternoon teas. Two of my all-time favourite treats. So, I jump at the chance to sample The Lanesborough’s newest tea – themed around the new Disney film Cruella – not least because it involves catching up with a friend who I haven’t seen in months. And it is such a treat, we are welcomed like long lost family and ushered into the hotel’s serene

Céleste restaurant. The sky is blue for the first time in weeks, and it is glorious sitting beneath the domed glass roof. No sooner have we settled ourselves, than a much-needed glass of bubbly appears, and we toast our happy reunion. This is no traditional tea: yes, there’s sandwiches, pastries and scones, but not as we know them. Paying homage to Disney’s chic villain, head pastry chef Kevin Miller has let his imagination run wild creating something he describes as “a little bit wild.” The spread is truly a work of art. There’s a golden ‘insideout’ lemon cheesecake, complete with an injection of blackcurrant sauce (“don’t eat the pipette,” we’re warned); a clever chocolate hat sits atop a red choux bun; striking black hearts enclose a refreshing raspberry mousse; pouting red lips

Adding to Marylebone’s fabulous foodie offerings, chef restaurateur and food writer Yotam Ottolenghi has opened a brand-new deli on Marylebone Lane. As well as a delicious selection of freshly prepared ready meals and pantry essentials, the new deli provides an opportunity to dine in, too. A no-reservations dining area inside sees guests seated around a vast Amazonian table, while there are also a couple of al fresco tables out front. From breakfasts (including those famous shakshuka eggs and homemade granola) and mid-morning cakes (we challenge you to resist the pistachio, rose water and semolina cake), to lunchtime salads (we love the roasted aubergine with lemon and lime yoghurt, amba, harissa oil and masala peanuts) and mains (like the roasted cauliflower, vadouvan feta cakes with spinach, basil and rocket pesto), there’s something for everybody, and any time of day. We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome them to the neighbourhood. 63 Marylebone Lane, W1U (ottolenghi.co.uk)

The recipes showcase Spanish cuisine’s deep flavours and vibrant colours: learn how to make a paella that packs a punch without spending hours in the kitchen, create a tapas feast for friends, and even whip up a delectable Spanish dessert in minutes. Traditionally this recipe was made using the whole chicken, however it is so much more shareable when made with wings.” 100 Foolproof Spanish Recipes for Every Day

by Omar Allibhoy (Quadrille, £14.99)

INGREDIENTS 400g (14oz) chicken wings | 1 lemon | 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil | 4 sprigs fresh thyme | 1 garlic bulb, cut in half | a pinch of sweet pimentón (sweet smoked paprika) | 3 tbsp honey | 2 tbsp chopped fresh coriander leaves | sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Bring a pan of water to the boil, add the chicken wings and boil for 5 minutes. Remove and drain on kitchen paper for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, zest the lemon, halve it and squeeze out the juice, but don’t throw the rest of it away. Heat the oil in a frying pan over a high heat. Add the thyme sprigs, chicken wings, squeezed lemon halves and the garlic, and fry for a couple of minutes on each side. Sprinkle the pimentón over the chicken and after 10 seconds drizzle the lemon juice and honey into the pan. Season with salt and pepper. Continue to sauté the chicken, allowing the liquid to reduce while making sure the wings are fully coated in the glaze. Add the lemon zest right at the end as it turns bitter if added too early and loses its fragrance quite quickly. Sprinkle with the chopped coriander and sea salt before serving.

What do you cook on days off? Anything that’s in season. I love cooking both Italian and Indian food.

Avinash Shashidhara What’s the last thing you cooked? A delicious dish of langoustine with wild garlic, ajwain and chilli, just before I sat down to write this. Our langoustines come fresh on the train from Scotland every day. What’s your signature dish? Asparagus with hemp seed chutney

Best meal you’ve ever eaten? The meals that I ate growing up, cooked by my mum. They were very simple, seasonal and vegetarian. It’s amazing how we never saw the need to eat fish or meat with that kind of simple South Indian vegetarian food.

If you could cook for anyone, who? The late Rose Gray. I still remember when she employed me at the River Café – she always said she loved Indian food and I only got to cook for her once. I wish she could see what I’ve been cooking at Pali Hill. What should no kitchen be without? Someone passionate who inspires the team. STYLISH STAYCATION

The art of self-catering Fancy some coastal air this summer? With its traditional holiday-town charm, a world-class art gallery, sandy beaches, cool café culture and quirky boutiques, Margate is but a short hop from the Capital – perfect for Londoners looking for a seaside escape. And if cool is your criteria, there’s nowhere better to stay than The Clay House, a new project from Bompas & Parr. Famous for its culinary art exhibitions, the design and creative studio was drawn to Margate by its artistic flare and diverse food scene. The spacious three-bed Georgian apartment sits above The Fabulous

Showboat arcade and overlooks Margate Main Sands. Bompas & Parr’s decadent design has been brought to life by local artisans over a two-year period. The colours are taken from Turner’s iconic Margate paintings: walls plastered with pink terracotta clay, the cantilevered staircase painted an intense blue, whilst stormy deep green panelling leads to the upstairs bedrooms. The staircases are built from larch – a close match to the timber that was abundant in Regency and Georgian homes. Over time this should naturally weather with foot traffic, imprinting a

Memories are made in the Lake District where the untouched beauty of nature is paired with a quintessential Britishness. If you’ll be exploring the National Park this summer, check out (or into) a brand-new hotel on the shores of Lake Windermere, where everybody is welcome – including our four-legged friends. Formerly The Hydro Hotel, The Ro has undergone a multi-million-pound refurbishment and now features 87 bedrooms in eight different categories, from the small but perfectly formed Snug rooms, to the stunning Ro Suite, with its breathtaking lake views. Taking inspiration from the surrounding countryside, the aesthetic focuses on a cool blue and turquoise colour palette, complemented with natural stone and traditional grey slate. The restaurant, Lacu, offers honest comfort food made from ingredients that are sourced responsibly, seasonally and, where possible, locally, served in a relaxed, informal environment to residents and local guests at any time of the day. And with breakfast served until 5pm, there’s no need to rush out of bed in the morning – though there’s so much to see here that you probably won’t want to lie around all day. Rooms rates from £295. TRAVEL Guests can experience quintessential country house living at York’s Middlethorpe Hall and Spa

PERIOD LIVING A Yorkshire country house hotel provides the perfect post-pandemic weekend escape WORDS by PENNY CLEMENTS

London will always hold a special place in my heart, but sometimes, city living gets too much. Not least when there has been no break from it: having missed the luxury of travel over the past year, and wondering when foreign travel might be back on the cards, I decide a mini break a little closer to home might be the kick start I need to get me out of Covid-hibernation and help me to leave 2021’s first bleak months behind. Set into 20 acres of the most magnificently landscaped gardens and parkland, Middlethorpe Hall and Spa’s beautiful location feels deeply rural, despite it being just a short ten-minute drive from the bustling centre of York. Pulling up in front of the handsome grade II listed house (which is managed by the National Trust) feels like stepping onto the set of a BBC period drama. With its impressive red brick and limestone façade, it has irresistible historic appeal. My companion and I are warmly greeted by a smartly dressed doorman, who takes charge of our luggage and leads us to the front desk,

where we swiftly check in. The entrance hall is imposing, but at the same time welcoming, with the feel of a beautiful family home – albeit a rather grand one. With its original stone-flagged floor, black marble fire surround, dark oak panelling and sweeping cantilevered oak staircase – lined with hanging portraits – it’s easy to believe that you have stepped back in time, an impression that is heightened if you check into one of the 10 elegantly designed principal suites situated on the first and second floors of the main house. Our room is on the first floor, right at the top of the stairs, and as soon as we open the door, it’s clear that the same care and detail has gone into designing the bedrooms as the reception areas. Every detail is just perfect. Appropriately furnished with an antique four-poster bed and pretty little armchairs, it is decorated in a soft colour palette with floral details. A large cast iron fireplace creates a focal point and huge shuttered windows offer unrivalled views of the gardens – this really is country living at its finest. Don’t expect a Nespresso machine, though, here it’s all about the old school charm. We order our tea through the hotel’s room service, and it arrives promptly on an antique tray, complete with freshly baked biscuits. What could be more quintessentially British? Of course, part of Middlethorpe Hall’s attraction was the prospect of a lazy afternoon of pampering at the spa, which is located in beautifully quaint converted Edwardian cottages. Situated on site and just 30 seconds down the lane, the spa has

a home from home vibe and it is immediately clear that we will be able to completely switch off here. There is a large indoor swimming pool, spa bath, sauna, steam room, and a small gymnasium tucked inside a Victorian summer house. The adjacent terrace, complete with comfortable daybeds, is a real sun trap and the perfect spot for catching some rays with a glass of bubbly – and, I soon discover, catching forty winks. The spa also has three beauty rooms offering a menu of therapeutic Aromatherapy Associates face and body treatments. I opt for the ultimate aromatherapy massage: 50 minutes of pure indulgence, it relieves tension and leaves my tight, stressed muscles feeling instantly relaxed. Dinner at Middlethorpe Hall is a real occasion. The elegant, two AA rosette rated restaurant is a fine dining, table-clothed affair. Indeed, with its elaborate oak panelling, the dining room is one of the grandest rooms in the hotel. Small and intimate, we enjoy both breakfast and dinner here, sampling nearly everything on the short but sweet menu over the course of our two-night stay. You can also book a traditional afternoon tea or a lighter lunch on Middlethorpe’s terrace, taking in the views over the gardens. We discover that this is also an unbeatable spot for an al fresco pre-dinner tipple. Before we leave, we take an early, undisturbed morning stroll through Middlethorpe’s grounds, passing the wildflower walk and then stumbling out onto the banks of the river Ouse beyond the gardens. We wander aimlessly back, revelling in the grandeur. We will certainly be sad to see the credits roll on this weekend. Room rates from £230 per night, including access to the spa (01904 641241; middlethorpe.com)

It brings warmth, cosiness and soul to any space.”

LITTA SOHI This Kensington-based interior designer creates dream spaces that really breathe

The best interior designed properties boast an effortless look, as if they haven’t been expertly put together at all. Rather, these are beautiful, relaxing homes designed to be lived in and loved in the long term. Iranian-born Litta Sohi offers just that, hers are calming spaces with soul. Now based in west London, the designer looks to her early Persian childhood for inspiration, specifically a sense of the exotic and of sensuality. But it is her love of the Nordic tradition – practicality, functionality and simplicity – that really brings her spaces to life. Indeed, Litta grew up in Denmark where she was immersed into the world of cutting edge design. Her father worked for the famous furniture maker and architect Arne Jacobsen, no less. The design lineage is strong and this Scandinavian influence can be seen throughout Litta’s projects, whether residential or commercial, large or small. Litta has always been fascinated by space and likes to see each room as a blank canvas. For her, a room should have beauty, functionality and harmony – and it needs to strike the perfect balance between space and object. The Danish practice of hygge is one that comes naturally to

Of course, hygge goes hand in hand with the use of natural materials and organic shapes and textures. Litta’s recent residential projects include the revamp of a Danish beach house, in which light-loving white washed walls act as the background to rustic wood furnishings, rattan pieces and pure wool weaves. Even in an urban setting, Litta manages to incorporate Mother Nature’s gifts, either with a chic neutral colour palette borrowed from the great outdoors, or in unexpected indoor/ outdoor furniture pieces. “I’m all about nature,” she reveals. “It has a big impact on my work and I try to incorporate as many natural elements and materials as I can. I particularly love the use of wood; I think it’s a fantastic material that’s not only pretty and practical, but also has a naturally warm texture. I’ll often incorporate bamboo in the form of lampshades or baskets to create a softer, natural texture in my spaces.” For Litta, the most important thing is the feel good factor. Every room should have individual style and a whole lot of soul, but ultimately, it should reflect the personality of the client. “It’s vital we obtain the very best feeling we can have in our homes,” she says. “Finding the right balance will create the perfect hygge feeling: one of relaxation, peacefulness, and of being at home.” For further info visit littasohi.com or get in touch on 07776 016966; info@littasohi.com

In their latest anniversary edition, twentytwentyone pays homage to legendary textile designer Anni Albers. Marking 25 years in the business, the brand joins forces with renowned rug maker Christopher Farr and The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, to recreate and reissue a historic design from the archive: Wall hanging 1925/2021. Numerous techniques have been used to stay true to the complex woven detail of the original – a classic example of the artist’s modernist approach to colour, texture and pattern.

WINDOW SHOPPING ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING WAYS TO ENHANCE OUR HOMES, WE SHINE A LIGHT ON ARCHITECT-DESIGNED SPACES WITH CREATIVE GLAZING TO INSPIRE WORDS by ALI HOWARD

Your home, your life

INTERIORS Left, below and opposite: the creative glazing in this new build home respects the surrounding Victorian architecture Bottom: a large expanse of glazing over the gable end allows this barn conversion to really make the most of its views

HIGH SOCIETY In this new development, creative glazing has been used to make the very best of natural daylight, keeping the look light and airy whilst staying sympathetic to the surrounding Victorian architecture. At its heart, the scheme integrates modern function and light as key design components, with ceiling heights reaching an impressive 3.4m in some apartments. Angled, black-framed glazing brings a cool, industrial edge to a light and bright penthouse study room, while in the elegant bathroom, light-loving floor-to-ceiling glazing frames its ornate neighbouring home, creating a heady contrast that playfully marries the classic with the contemporary. 80hollandpark.com “The glazed links between each of the new villas were designed to sit as quietly as possible whilst offering a polished transition set back from the richness of the main frontage. Layered with projecting fins, this adds more interest, rather than simple flat glazing. At the fourth floor, the building steps back with a contemporary mansard roof and glazing in order to provide a visually recessive crown to the building.” Liam Saxby, Studio Indigo

GREEN GABLES For this striking barn conversion, the brief was to add large expanses of glazing with narrow, contemporary profiles that delivered on durability, without compromising on style. Thames Valley Window Company came up trumps with floor-to-ceiling gable end windows, which were chosen to flood the internal room with daylight, whilst maintaining uninterrupted countryside views. In keeping with the original architecture, the gable end glazing brings a sense of grandeur and symmetry to this characterful property – a sanctuary -like holiday home away from the city. Proving that going bold pays dividends, the house boasts a harmonious blend of contemporary and traditional styles. tvwindows.com “Working closely with the homeowners, it was decided that Solurlux slimline aluminium sliding doors would be installed in a beige grey colour to complement the honey-coloured stonework and seamlessly integrate the old with the new. Insulated aluminium frames, with sealed joints and Planitherm toughened glass delivered excellent thermal performance and superior weather resistance.” Ryan Thomas, Thames Valley Window Company

INTERIORS Left and below: double height vertically sliding sash windows add serious wow factor to this Art Decoinfluenced abode

RAISE THE GLASS This magnificent new-build home with Art Deco influences is all about the glass. The aim of the project was to maximise on natural daylight and forge a strong connection with the property’s expansive manicured lawns. While the house offers an array of innovative, designled, and high tech glazing, its pièce de resistance is its minimalist double height guillotine window system at the rear. These vertically sliding sash windows are designed to be counterweighted, allowing the homeowner to lift the lower pane, which simultaneously draws down the top pane, perfectly lining them up with the fixed centre window. A triumph of form and function. iqglassuk.com “As the property benefits from a large outdoor area, IQ designed a glazing package that included direct links between the home and garden. To add a unique edge, an oversized vertical sash window was specified for the double height rear façade. Split into three panes with the middle pane being weighted, the vertical sash allows the space to be opened up for indoor/outdoor living whilst creating a coherent exterior design with other glazed elements.” Carly Coren, IQ Glass

FRAME NOIR Thoughtfully refurbished, this large Victorian family home in Holland Park makes use of Crittall windows to bring a sense of continuity – and that all-important flow. The black steel-framed glazing has been used inside and out in a way that, ingeniously, opens up the space yet divides the rooms. Crittall glazing has a timeless quality, adding a slice of industrial chic and suiting contemporary and period properties alike, but, as is the case here, it works best when you have some serious ceiling height to work with. Dramatically opening up the rear of the property, the double-height Crittall glazing is suitably imposing and stylish. 318.studio “We wanted to create a sense of openness throughout the house, in particular within and between the principal floors. There was some conflict between this desire and the need to create functional spaces that could be used separately and privately. Glazed partitions provided the best of both worlds, creating separation but retaining the strong visual connections that we sought.” Guy Stansfeld, 23+GS/318

Luxury living at Lyons Place

Including five contemporary townhouses, Lyons Place offers a leafy village lifestyle in the heart of London

S

et at the meeting point of Maida Vale, Little Venice and St John’s Wood, Almacantar’s boutique new homes at Lyons Place couldn’t be better placed. The development features 22 apartments, two duplex-penthouses and five three-storey townhouses, all surrounded by green space with the verdant Regent’s Park a tantalising stone’s throw away. You’d be forgiven for thinking you weren’t in Zone One at all. Indeed, Lyons Place offers a quiet, village-like lifestyle, but one that’s very well connected: here, you have some of the Capital’s best loved parks, canals and boutique high streets at your fingertips, yet there’s an impressive five tube stations to choose from – all within walking distance – should you wish to nip into the West End on a whim. The exclusive Townhouse Collection at Lyons Place comprises five contemporary three-storey homes (with just two remaining units still available) that are both ideal for families and perfect for entertaining – think large, open-plan living spaces and generous outdoor terraces. Elegantly designed by renowned architect (and long-term local resident) Sir Terry Farrell, the properties promise residents all the charm of a period London townhouse, but of course they’ll benefit from modern uplifts and purposeful design, too. The concept of ‘upside-down’ living playfully places reception rooms on the top floor, maximising views of the leafy surrounds and making the most of the natural daylight. Plus, all living and dining rooms open onto at least one integrated terrace, with full height windows, allowing for an inviting and on-trend indoor/outdoor feel. Add to that a multimedia package, which includes access to exceptional

pre-installed fibre optic broadband, and you really have the best of both worlds. Striking contemporary kitchens have been thoughtfully designed, boasting high spec materials and bespoke detailing, while top of the range Miele appliances ensure quality and sophistication. Similarly, bathrooms are all about modern luxury with the use of natural stone complemented with chrome Dornbracht sanitaryware. If that’s piqued your interest, why not take a look? Award-winning interior design studio Alexander James was tasked with dressing the Townhouse show home – the brief was to reflect the development’s bold colour and form, and to capture the unique character of the surrounding area. Beautifully put together, the Townhouse features a carefully curated colour palette that reflects the waterways of neighbouring Little Venice: think crisp blues and deep olive tones, as well as textural interest by way of woods, metals and aged glass. Kathrin Hersel, Property Director at Almacantar, says: “Lyons Place presents a truly boutique offering, in one of the most lively and charming areas of London. Working closely with Sir Terry Farrell’s building and interiors team, and interior designer Alexander James, we have created a beautifully crafted collection of homes, offering residents the chance to embed themselves in a vibrant local community, all within minutes of the city centre.” To register interest, contact Sales Manager Dawid Dziegielewski at 020 7535 3948; dawid.dziegielewski@almacantar.com (lyonsplace.co.uk)

JENNA CHOATE

As co-founder of boutique interior design studio, Interior Fox, Jenna certainly knows how to put a room together. Doing up her own home, however, meant going deeper than the cosmetic WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by VERONICA RODRIGUEZ

Never ones to shy away from a project, Jenna and husband Ben got to work immediately when they bought their threebed Victorian home in north London back in 2017 – they had been searching for the right property for a full year. If the idea was to gut the place and start again, you’d be forgiven for wondering why they’d be so picky, but the interior designer knew she needed to find a house with “unique and original bones” in order to realise the ambitious renovation. “We finally found a special property,” says Jenna. “Being endof-terrace, you get a larger lot and a side return in the back garden, plus garden entrance from the street. And we needed somewhere that had enough space to re-configure the layout to create a more modern living flow.” Jenna and Ben share the property with their two sausage dogs, Stella and Chloe – by no coincidence names from the fashion world, in fitting with their stylish abode. The house offers a rich feast of natural textures, clean modern lines, and contemporary artworks and objects. For Jenna, it’s all about relaxed and luxe global interiors with strong European influences. “I love sunny destinations and outdoor living,” she explains, “so my interiors style usually incorporates elements from this type of lifestyle. I love off-white linen, clean lines, worn wood, and I love mixing patterns and prints. I am obsessed with a stripe!” The renovation came to life in two distinct phases: phase one saw the master bedroom reconfigured, opening up the small bedroom next door and creating a walk-in wardrobe and en suite, while the original family bathroom down the hall was converted into a guest room with a small en suite bathroom. “We also white-washed all the walls and stained all the floorboards black for a neutral base,” says Jenna. “I recommend doing this when you move into an old/new space to really see the bones and make a fresh start.” Phase two consisted of a lower ground floor side extension with an internal structural refurb. “We moved the entire ground floor staircase to create a small home bar in the dining space and a laundry room behind it,” Jenna explains. “The kitchen extension was a must for this space as the previous kitchen was sunken and very dark. The basement bedroom and hallway were re-configured and opened up to create a larger guest bedroom, built-in storage and a window seat.”

Your home, your life

Clockwise from above: Jenna describes the striking mezzanine chill out space as a work of genius; white walls and black stained floorboards allow the period bones of the living room to shine; a small bedroom has been converted into a dressing room for the master suite; the once dingy kitchen is now chic and stylish; the master bedroom transformation formed phase one of the house project

60

The look is effortlessly chic. You wouldn’t know it, but each room has been meticulously planned out, rather than coming together over the years in an organic, thrown together fashion. (Conversely, the property looks entirely organic and thrown together – in the best possible way). “I treated my own home like I would a client’s,” Jenna reveals. “I planned each room out with a mood-board of products and colours and took it from there.” But being a seasoned interior designer, she knew when to go with the flow, too. “Not everything goes to plan,” she admits, “so being able to adapt or adjust as you go is important as well. I knew from the get-go things like floor colours, wall colours, electrical outlets, and hardware, and from there each room had a concept. For bathrooms, I was excited to pick out the tiles and really get playful with the combinations. If I have the opportunity to add a wall light or a ceiling pendant, I will.” Going from room to room, you’re met with surprising elements, either structurally or in the décor – the inviting window seat in the guest bedroom, for example, or the feature wall of wooden slats in the study, which gives the room a distinct Scandi feel and a sauna-like warmth. Perhaps the most inspired, however, is the mezzanine. “This room used to

AT HOME WITH

go all the way to the windows, which were French doors with a spiral staircase that went down to the garden,” Jenna reveals. “It was beautiful but completely impractical as it was wasting so much space below.” The couple worked with east London’s MAP Architecture for this part of the renovation, citing them as ‘genius’. “We originally called this room the library and imagined a two-storey bookcase, but we realised we don’t actually have that many books!” Jenna admits. Instead, the space was designed around a work by fine art photographer Tom Blachford. “He photographs famous mid-century architects’ homes at night in Palm Springs,” says Jenna. The picture certainly sets the vibe, and with the addition of an imposing indoor tree, ’70s style tan leather armchairs, and white pendant lights with excessively long fringing, it is a quirky but ultimately calming space, impossible not to relax in. “We use this space for yoga, for drinking coffee, for taking a phone call,” says Jenna. “It’s a bonus chill zone.” There’s lots to look forward to for Interior Fox, not least an upcoming loft conversion, a commercial showroom, and a restaurant makeover on the cards. With a busy workload, it’s imperative that Jenna’s own property is a sanctuary of calm. The designer says that she’s in her happy place when she can truly mix indoor and outdoor space, and this connection with nature is no more apparent than in the bright and airy kitchen. “I love the main kitchen wall with quartz stone and white tongue ’n’ groove,” she says. “The bright white feels like the light you get on a sunny day. When I’m standing in my kitchen and open the sliding doors to the outdoor seating area, that is my favourite moment. The outdoor patio was all custom built from block work and then my sweet mother-inlaw made all the custom cushions. The hot tub sits just behind the seating, so it is a triple treat for me.” interiorfox.co.uk

of mind: “I’m a strong believer in being able to see everything you have easily, otherwise you won’t use it,” she says, proving that her decluttering service goes way beyond the cosmetic, it’s about functionality as much as creating a calming space. For those drowning under a mountain of clothes, Litta sorts into separate categories: for the charity shop, items the client definitely wants to keep, the ‘not sure’ box – to be decided at a later date, and a box for items to sell on eBay or Depop. “Some old items we have are especially meaningful so these can be difficult to get rid of,” she says. “I’ll often put these in a special box on a shelf labelled ‘sentimental’ so they are easy to access and they are all together.” Ultimately, clearing, decluttering, organising and rearranging has

If the past year has taught us anything about our homes it’s that space is a precious commodity. Indeed, spending so much time at home, we’ve been able to reassess our immediate surroundings and question whether we are, in fact, utilising every inch of them in the best possible way. Stretched to both social and home working limits, it’s little wonder we might be in need of a good old clear out, if not a shrewd new way to organise our belongings. Alongside her comprehensive interior design service, Kensingtonbased Litta Sohi also offers clearing, decluttering and organising, and with that, clients’ homes will naturally get the designer’s personal touch. Growing up in Denmark, Litta was immersed into the world of design. For her, the concept of hygge has a very special meaning, it’s at the heart of everything she does and this strong Scandi influence can be seen today, throughout her work. “I love order, harmony, and beauty,” she says, “but I believe that the way that you feel about yourself and your home is what truly matters.” When it comes to being super organised, the designer calls on her own experience, having lived all over the world and relocated numerous times. She tells us: “Having a big family with four children, dogs, horses, you name it, I had to come up with systems that worked brilliantly.

I focus on clearing, decluttering, organising and rearranging any room, ideally keeping what the client already has in terms of furnishings and storage and only adding essentials to renew and refresh the space. I’ve helped many families and I manage to give the homes I work on a lovely warm feeling of positive energy.” Whether she’s clearing garages or kitchen cupboards, organising kids’ rooms or rearranging clients’ refrigerators, Litta works on the premise that out of sight equals out

transformative effects on our wellbeing. For Litta, eliminating what she calls “decision fatigue” – feeling overwhelmed by our stuff, having to decide where items belong – can reduce stress. A cathartic clear out can also improve mental focus and can even save time going forward. “What is important is how you feel about your home: it’s something very personal and emotional,” she says, “it’s not just about the mechanics of decluttering… I love nothing better than helping people to get their home set up in a way that really works for them.” For further information, visit littasohi.com or get in touch on 07776 016966 or info@littasohi.com

The force of nature How one north London nursery and pre-prep is using an outdoor curriculum to accelerate academic and personal growth in the early years of education The theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week and central to the UK Parliament’s new Environment Bill, nature is top of the agenda for 2021. Ahead of the trend, North Bridge House Nursery & Pre-Prep West Hampstead opened its doors last September to provide a unique Early Years education, centred entirely around continuation of the curriculum outdoors. With sheltered teaching and outdoor play space, teachers can collapse the timetable and take any lesson outside at any given time. And with a vegetable garden, mud kitchen, timetabled Forest School and school pets, children connect with nature as part of their everyday life. While access to nature has been directly linked to improved mental and physical health in the early years, one in five (21 per cent) London households has no access to a garden (National Office for Statistics, May 2020). North Bridge House Nursery & Pre-Prep West Hampstead aims to create a greener future for children, providing a home from home that transforms their childhood experience when it matters most. “The early years are fundamental to a child’s academic and personal development and to their future successes. Nature and outdoor learning provide the building blocks

for educational achievement, developing all of creative, communication and language, maths and problem-solving skills,” says Head of School Eilish Sleator. But for NBH Nursery & Pre-Prep West Hampstead, the force of nature promotes more than just the school’s pursuit for academic excellence, developing children socially, emotionally and physically in a society rife with childhood mental health and obesity concerns. With 50 per cent of mental health problems established by age 14 (mentalhealth. org.uk), Eilish aims to promote wellbeing from the outset of children’s education, and school dog Wilson has proved invaluable to creating a wholesome environment for little ones starting out on their school career. “Sometimes a child starting school has felt a little shy or anxious, but they have been greeted by Wilson at the door and immediately reassured. Some of our Nursery children are very young and therefore only just learning to communicate clearly and process their feelings, but if something is bothering them, a cuddle with Wilson always makes everything better!” continues Eilish. NBH Nursery and Pre-Prep West Hampstead further builds on children’s affinity for animals and the natural world, often introducing guest residents such as caterpillars and ducklings to inspire pupils’ understanding of the world and their empathy towards others. “The holistic development of children is integral to the approach we take here at NBH West Hampstead and connecting with the natural world is an important part of the Early Years curriculum, stimulating the imagination to think, question and hypothesise while inspiring that sense of wonder which motivates lifelong learning,” says the Head of School. The school places particular emphasis on developing independence and self-confidence in pupils, harnessing the freedom of the great outdoors to facilitate learning by doing and experimenting with ideas. Each week the children attend Forest School, a 96-acre site which is full of new experiences and challenges to overcome. “The unique woodland environment is naturally abundant with opportunities for children to explore and discover, work together, make decisions and learn from mistakes. In a natural world of opportunity, children feel empowered as they learn more about themselves and the environment around them,” explains Eilish. A study by The Forestry Commission into physical activity at Forest School found that activity levels in Forest Schools are typically 2.2 times higher than during an active school day (i.e. a day that includes PE). The study points out that, on average, children do not meet the daily recommended one hour of vigorous physical activity on a typical school day, while Forest School presents a novel way to promote better physical health and wellbeing, engaging boys and girls equally in active pursuits. “NBH Nursery & Pre-Prep West Hampstead children are actively searching for animal habitats, building dens, or even swimming in the stream!” says the Head of School. All the while, staff continue to assess each child through observation, gaining a better understanding of how they tackle new tasks so that support and teaching can then be tailored to the individual most effectively. NBH Nursery & Pre-Prep West Hampstead presents a rather unique central London offer, taking children beyond the conventional constraints of the classroom and into the natural environment, where they are stimulated through all kinds of sensory, practical and organic experiences as part of their day-to-day education. “Our aim is to create a healthy balance between a forwardthinking curriculum and the great outdoors, connecting the mind to nature and the wider world to develop key critical thinking skills in the formative years of education,” concludes NBH Nursery & Pre-Prep Head.

Exposing children to nature and spending plenty of time outdoors form the building blocks of the Early Years experience at NBH Nursery & Pre-Prep

MEET THE LOCALS

From our agents...

1. Jeremy Stecker, Benham & Reeves “The stamp duty

holiday has fuelled purchases of all sizes of homes, with flats in both new builds and conversions achieving sold prices of £550,000 to £800,000. Houses have also fared well in the last three months, achieving £1.4million to £2.5million, depending on condition and location. House prices in West Hampstead are up 4-5 per cent and it’s looking like the local property market is not ready to take a back seat just yet.”

Ruth Hockman

Founder and Creator of Rain On Me UK (ROM) and Ride and Raise

I’ve lived here since 2005 and it has always felt like home thanks to the brilliant sense of community. Whether you’re engaging in a debate about our bridge wall mural by Justice Through Arts, grabbing a drink at The Alice House or tucking into fried chicken at The Gallery, there’s always a local to hang out and have fun with. I set up Rain on Me to brighten up the landscape with neon and glitter during the first lockdown. The studio and showroom is on Finchley Road, at Uthink Hampstead. Before heading to my dungeon of dreams to crack on with the spray paints, a gossip with fellow artist in residence Lucy Jagger is essential. Hampstead Cemetery and Fortune Green are my local outdoor calm spaces and have become backdrops for ROM photo shoots. Another favourite spot is Wayne Kirkham Way,

which runs next to the railway (it reminds me of a marble run I used to play with circa 1985). A go to for coffee and pancakes is Have An Avo – recently, the location for discussions with Rosanna Tucker, owner of immersive fitness studios Studio Society, to plot the next Ride And Raise charity spinathon event. A pavement table pit stop at The Wet Fish Café is also a must. I love watching the local goings on over a bottle of their Sancerre Rosé and a plate of polenta fries. Fridays are for challah and there’s only one place for that – my friends at Roni’s have kept me in rolls, bagels and Tahini for over 16 years. West End Lane’s charity shops are firm favourites, particularly The Children’s Society and Scope, where I’ve made some incredible finds (from a Max Mara belt to a Donna Karan blazer).

I’m a big fan of the ham and cheese croissant from Gail’s, which I treat myself to whilst browsing. The flakes get everywhere, much like the paint from my “designed to weather” raincoats – oops! Post office trips to either Ann’s Community Shop on Mill Lane or the Sheriff Centre are always a pleasure thanks to the friendly, helpful staff. I’m not a natural blonde: I’ve got Bryn Samuel at Hob Salon to thank for that. And Tran and Queeny at Unique keep my hands and hoofs colourful! West Hampstead and its people continue to be a huge source of inspiration to me and ROM. It can be noisy and a little chaotic here, but it has character, and I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. 2. Vivienne Harris, Heathgate “West Hampstead has become a buzzing throng of activity due to the interesting High Streets of Fortune Green Road and West End Lane, plus its ample transport links. The housing is mainly Victorian, interspersed with new builds and some lovely mansion blocks. It has become a ‘younger’ Hampstead, with less expensive housing making it popular and more affordable than the NW3 postcode located across the Finchley Road.”

Local heroes Dany’s Barber, NW6

We were all guilty of taking local hairdressers and barbers for granted until lockdown hit and had us attempting hilarious home cuts with little success. Indeed, we have a new found appreciation for those who are masters of the clippers. Mark Rees from Parkheath nominates this popular neighbourhood barbers as his local hero, telling us: “They are an excellent long-standing business catering for all local residents and clients. They are friendly, efficient and care about the local community.” 8 Canfield Gardens, NW6 (020 7372 0960; danysbarber.com)

For veggies, it’s a luxury knowing you’ve got an entire menu to choose from, but perhaps that only adds to the indecision – especially with fabulously hearty and wholesome fare on offer. Dexters’ Felix Brown hails this vegetarian eatery, located in the heart of West Hampstead, as a real hidden gem. “The restaurant and café creates dishes with Mediterranean and Asian influences,” he says. “It’s known by many for its incredibly friendly staff, it’s a great local business and an absolute must visit. I’d recommend the mac and cheese and the curry cauliflower, both delicious! 77 Mill Lane, NW6 (020 3802 8578; theswing.london)

Say what?

Euphorium, NW6

For Savills’ Harriet Davies, West Hampstead is foodie heaven, with a great choice of eateries, delis, cafés and of course the bustling farmers’ market that’s open every Saturday. One particular favourite is this enticing bakery and café on West End Lane. “I live in West Hampstead and love it,” she tells us. “Saturday mornings are great for walking down to Euphorium Bakery for a mocha and a pastry.” Choose from a seriously tempting array of cakes, pastries and bread, or sit down for a hearty breakfast or lunch and watch the world go by. 236 West End Lane, NW6 (euphorium.uk.com)

Many musical memories have been made in West Hampstead: Dusty Springfield was born here; Shirley Bassey once owned a record shop on West End Lane; The Beatles were famously rejected after an audition at Decca Studios on Broadhurst Gardens (now home to the English National Opera); and U2 played their first gig outside Ireland at The Moonlight pub (now The Railway). 69

Digital wellbeing

North Bridge House Nursery and Pre-Prep West Hampstead How would you sum up the school in a sentence? A place of boundless opportunities; a hub of creativity; a warm, open, and vibrant community; a home away from home.

Schools provide a great deal of structure and support for children’s ongoing education around internet safety. But how do parents ensure this doesn’t drop off during the holidays? Jonny Pelter, CEO of new online safety and digital wellbeing service Just Ask Max provides us with these tips to make the holidays more harmonious. Set expectations It can be really helpful for both kids and parents to use an informal agreement that sets out clear expectations around internet use in the house. Vodafone has released a fantastic tool, which creates your own family internet use pledge, communicating to kids that there are responsibilities involved in using the internet. It takes about ten minutes to complete and provides a PDF to be printed out and stuck on the fridge. Secure their communications Parental controls are a useful tool we can use to not only ensure that our little ones don’t see inappropriate content online, but also that the wrong people can’t get access to them in messaging and social media chat rooms. Gone are the days where parents need to physically check their children’s phone. Remember, some parental control apps are incredibly invasive. They record every single tap and keystroke your child makes, undoubtedly invading their privacy, so try to avoid apps like mSpy, Tiny Keylogger and Spyzie. Explore using something like SafetoNet or Bark, which are designed to protect your child without invading their privacy and compromising parent/child trust. Online gaming Your kids will no doubt binge on their favourite

online games during the holidays, so be aware of what the risks are, which can include cyber bullying, sexual predators, adult content and being overly addictive. You can use our guide to set up spend limits and parental controls on your games consoles, to ensure both parents and kids are protected while gaming. Digital detox Almost all of us who try a digital detox report multiple health benefits – even if it’s for a short period. We become more focused, our concentration improves, our ability to manage digital distractions is increased and, ultimately, we display greater ability to be ‘present’ with people. There are two methods to combine when performing a digital detox for the family. The first is to regulate behaviour: this includes defining tech-free spaces in the home; having a family charging station so that everyone puts their devices on charge before bedtime; and learning how best to handle tech tantrums when screens are taken away. The second is to regulate tech: use screen time controls or a parental app that enforces a screen time schedule, disable push notifications – a quieter phone is used much less, and utilise the ‘Do Not Disturb’ functionality on your devices. What makes it different? North Bridge House is a nonselective, all-through school. That means children automatically progress from each key stage to the next, without the stress of entrance exams. The West Hampstead school is a brand-new building, with facilities that use natural, sustainable products as much as possible. Our children can grow their own vegetables and look after chickens. We also offer state-ofthe-art immersive technology and apply Philosophy for Children (P4C) to improve communication skills, teamwork and resilience. How would you describe the atmosphere? Our school is a growing hub for the local community, where parents and children are made to feel safe and comfortable. It’s all about fostering a genuine love of learning among happy, confident children. What about your personal educational ethos? In a future where technology will play an increasing role, our children will need to have excellent communication and social skills. I believe our creative, immersive spaces, as well as the co-ed environment, will facilitate these. A co-ed setting in particular is very important in shaping the children’s social skills in these formative years. Young children need to be exposed to diversity so they can adapt to different environments as they grow up. 85-87 Fordwych Road, NW2 (020 7428 1520; northbridgehouse.com)

Sporting chance

A good all-round physical education at school is so important. We talk to Jonny Dunne, St Anthony’s Assistant Head, to find out how the school’s sports curriculum benefits their boys

All boys from Year 3 up play competitive fixtures in a variety of sports, regardless of ability

Your home, your life

What are the health benefits of physical education in schools? I don’t think there has been a more important call for physical education in schools for a long time. Children have spent large periods of the last year locked up at home, missing out on the physical, mental and social aspects of sport. The benefits to both body and mind are countless and at St. Anthony’s we will continue to offer a wide range of organised sport and co-curricular activities to allow this generation of children to get back on their feet. Are there life lessons to be learnt through participating in sport? Sport can engender persistence, integrity, teamwork, trust, accountability, patience and passion, all important life skills. At St. Anthony’s we use the CARDS initiative to teach our boys lessons that can be implemented both on and off the sports field Creativity The ability to overcome a problem in different ways Awareness Recognising individual and collective opportunities and thinking of others Resilience The skill of adapting to pressure and overcoming adversity Decision Making Being confident in selecting an effective action in all situations Self-organisation This could mean remembering to pack a PE kit or turning up to an exam on time.

072

How does physical education benefit academic achievement? There has been countless research into the benefits that PE has on academic performance. Some of the results from these studies show that PE can increase focus and concentration in the classroom, increase oxygen to the brain and significantly improve pupils’ attitudes to learning. It is not a given that being able to run 5K will help children to excel academically, but the evidence is clear that our boys are much happier and more confident – both in and out of the classroom – when they stay active. What is the ethos behind the sports education offered at St. Anthony’s? St. Anthony’s has a “sport for all” ethos and we encourage and nurture the importance of taking part in physical activity to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. All our boys, from Year 3 through to Year 8 play competitive fixtures in a number of sports, and we stretch and challenge our most able athletes by entering both local and national competitions. Our U13 Football Squad recently went on tour to Spain, where we trained with coaches from both Atletico and Real Madrid. Our hope is that we can forge a lifelong trend for participation in sport and teach pupils to be sympathetic to others in both a social and sporting context. How does sport fit into the curriculum at St. Anthony’s? Every pupil has the opportunity

How do you ensure that every child is involved? As I already mentioned, all of our pupils take part in weekly competitive fixtures from Year 3. We offer a high number of activities in both PE and games to allow every pupil to develop a passion for sport. We differentiate lessons to allow all levels of pupil to make progress and our boys are taught the importance of kindness both in and out of the classroom. This includes making sure that every pupil feels included, regardless of ability. What facilities are available to pupils? On site we have two large playgrounds that are used for multiple sports, including basketball fixtures and badminton. We have a 15-metre pool on site that is used by every pupil at the school and is a key training facility for our gala squad. Our indoor hall is used for gymnastics, dance and Key Stage One PE and our sports ground at Brondesbury offers football and rugby pitches, cricket nets and pitches, tennis and squash courts. Athletics equipment is also available, including high-jump and long jump facilities and an athletics track during the summer term. For enquiries, call 020 7435 3597 (stanthonysprep.org.uk)

to take part in PE, games, swimming or cocurricular activities almost every day of the week, including some weekends. All pupils from Reception up have timetabled swimming and PE lessons and boys from Year 2 to 8 have timetabled games lessons throughout the week. Our boys are very good all-rounders and are capable of transitioning from a maths lesson to a football pitch very quickly!

From tennis courts to football pitches and a 15-metre swimming pool, the St. Anthony’s sports facilities are truly first class

How does the curriculum change throughout a child’s time at the school? The number of sporting opportunities increases greatly as boys progress through the year groups at St. Anthony’s. In Key Stage One, the focus is on gross motor skills, teaching sportsmanship and learning the enjoyment of movement. In Key Stage Two, boys begin to play competitive fixtures with other schools and enter competitions such as those run by IAPS in football, rugby, hockey, cricket, and table tennis and inter-school fixtures in cross-country running, tennis, basketball and athletics. We aim to teach game awareness, resilience and teamwork through these competitions. In Key Stage Three, our pupils go on residential tours including our Spanish Football Tour and the Prep4Sport Tournament at St. George’s Park. They complete a unit of work on Health-Related Fitness and develop a sense of leadership and organisation. Additionally, pupils in Years 6 to 8 are looking forward to a ski-trip planned for 2022. Are there opportunities for pupils to get involved in extra-curricular activities, too? We run a number of extra-curricular clubs for Years 2 to 8. These include a Fit HIIT club, swimming club in our own pool, running club on Hampstead Heath, multi sports club where boys enjoy badminton, basketball, football and cricket, plus we have clubs in yoga, dance, boxing and from September we will have a karate teacher, too!

Market insight from our agents VIRTUAL EVENT

Welcome to the ’Wood Beauchamp Estates have unveiled their stylish new flagship branch on St. John’s Wood High Street – and they’re in seriously good company. The neighbourhood is famed for Abbey Road Studios, with its iconic zebra crossing made famous by the Fab Four; for Lord’s, the veritable home of cricket; for having the sanctuary-like Regent’s Park on the doorstep; and of course, for its residential property offering, which isn’t too shoddy, either: think classic Regency style houses, detached villas and stucco-fronted terraces, alongside the area’s ever-popular apartment blocks, whether new build or chic mid-century. Gary Hersham, Beauchamp’s founding director says: “St. John’s Wood is one of the most vibrant markets in London at present, due to the supply of high quality houses with home offices and gardens, and luxury apartments with proximity to parks, which is exactly what people want. Homes are in high demand here and this is why we are delighted to be opening our new St. John’s Wood office, located right in the centre of the High Street.” 80 St. John’s Wood High Street, NW8 (20 7722 9793; beauchamp.com)

Q. How important is a good de-clutter in order to sell?

TK International I love London because… of its cultural variety. There are so many interesting people to meet and there is always something going on, whether that’s a new restaurant to try or exhibition to see, and the many green spaces come to life in the sunshine! First London home? I was raised in Primrose Hill, then moved to Maida Vale and then Hampstead. But the first property I bought was a one-bed in South Hampstead.

Favourite client? I let my grandmother’s properties, so obviously she has to be my favourite! Period property or new-build? Period property every time. Some new builds are architecturally interesting but I think they are few and far between. If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… a food critic, ideally, more likely a waiter. Favourite London street?

Honourable mentions to Portobello Road, Golborne Road, Neal’s Yard and Southbank. But I’ve always loved Fitzrovia, so I’ll go Charlotte Street. Favourite place to grab a coffee? Dark Habit in Queen’s Park, Ginger & White in Hampstead, Kaffeine in Fitzrovia… Gail’s is ubiquitous and offers solid coffee, too. Favourite eatery? Lisboa Patisserie on Golborne Road,

for both the cakes and the nostalgia. My dad took me there as a kid and it hasn’t changed at all in 35 years. I get withdrawal symptoms if I go too long without having one of their Pastéis de Nata. Where do you go for head space in the city? A walk in the park with my family. Hampstead Heath, Primrose Hill, Regent’s Park and Queen’s Park are my favourites.

75

A: A well-presented property in any market is vitally important to attract the maximum number of potential buyers. In the current climate, where, understandably, applicants remain selective about which properties they choose to view, it really is essential for a home to be shown at its absolute best. Often the most effective – and certainly the cheapest – way to achieve this is to de-clutter as much as possible, not only will your rooms feel bigger, but you can go on to create a welcoming ‘lifestyle feel’ to the home. In addition, clean lines, along with a bunch of flowers or a bowl of fruit positioned strategically on the kitchen island or dining table, can make all the difference. CORRINGHAM, 13-16 CRAVEN HILL GARDENS, BAYSWATER, W2 £625,000 A stylish and beautifully presented spacious duplex apartment with its own private east facing balcony, which looks directly onto the mature and well-stocked pretty landscaped communal gardens. This striking modernist apartment has plenty of natural light throughout, open plan living, long lease, live-in-porter and located on one of Bayswater’s most sought after addresses. A distinctively modernist and rare Grade II early 1960’s building - Corringham was one of the most elaborately planned private blocks of its day. Designed by a Kenneth Frampton - regarded as one of the world’s leading historians of modernist architecture. The plan was executed with a sophisticated offering - an ideal east-west aspect to every property, with a maximum of through light and ventilation. This visionary design allowed each flat to be double aspect with sitting rooms at the front of the building and bedrooms at the back of the building looking out onto the mature pretty communal landscaped gardens. Almost within a stone’s throw of Hyde Park and within an easy walk to Paddington main line Station (Heathrow Express / forthcoming CrossRail), Lancaster Gate (Central Line) and an eclectic mix of shopping and eateries at Queensway and Westbourne Grove. Grade II listed
