WHAT’S ON IN LONDON

What to see, read and do in the Capital this June

EXHIBITION

Launching A Landmark: The Unseen Opening Weeks

This month, London’s iconic Tower Bridge will host a captivating free open-air exhibition, featuring a series of previously unseen photographs from the building’s construction and early days in 1894. These images were recently uncovered by the descendants of Edward Cruttwell, a Victorian engineer who played a crucial role in the bridge’s history. The exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the lives of the workers and the first users of the bridge. Expect AR features and additional digital content, providing a deep dive into the personal stories that underpin this worldfamous landmark. Patrick Molineux, Cruttwell’s great grandson who discovered the photographs, reveals: “My mother had stored the photos for decades in an archive box, and we were pleasantly shocked to discover that they’d never been seen publicly. It’s always been a source of pride for our family to have such a connection to an icon like Tower Bridge so we couldn’t quite believe we’d discovered such a piece of history.” 22 June-31 August, Tower Bridge, SE1 (towerbridge.org.uk)

FESTIVAL Meltdown

This year’s Meltdown is curated by the inimitable Chaka Khan, kicking off on 14 June with an unmissable performance by the diva herself, and spanning two weekends packed with both free and ticketed events, with a stellar line-up that includes Emeli Sandé, Bruce Hornsby, and legendary funk/rock/soul/Latin band War. The festival also features performances from Malian supergroup Les Amazones d’Afrique, indie artist Master Peace, and Black feminist punk band Big Joanie, complemented, as always, by vibrant club nights – DJ extraordinaire Norman Jay and techno powerhouse Adonis are amongst those slated to command the decks. Plus, an extensive free programme on the Riverside Terrace and in the Clore Ballroom highlights Khan’s dedication to community and wellness. We can’t think of a better way to kick start a sizzling summer in the Capital. 14-23 June, Southbank Centre, Belvedere Road, SE1 (020 3879 9555; southbankcentre.co.uk)

THEATRE

Wedding Band: A Love/Hate Story in Black and White

Monique Touko returns to the Lyric this season, directing an emotive production penned by the esteemed American playwright Alice Childress. The play, set in 1918 in the deep south, navigates the turbulent waters of an interracial romance against a backdrop of oppressive anti-miscegenation laws. This ground-breaking work delves into the devastating effects these laws had on personal lives, mirroring the harsh realities the playwright faced during the Civil Rights era. Touko says: “This is my first attempt at an African American classic, told by a writer ahead of her time, who centred Black women and exposed the highs and lows of the human condition. I feel a big responsibility with this revival to ensure it is handled with care and speaks to contemporary audiences.” Expect a poignant exploration of race and class in this not-to-be-missed retelling. Until 29 June, Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, Lyric Square, King Street, W6 (020 8741 6850; lyric.co.uk)

COMMUNITY CONCERT

Finding the Poetic

NW Live Arts introduces an inspiring fusion of music and storytelling with an event set to enchant audiences at the historic Cecil Sharp House. This is, in fact, the grand finale of a seven-week series of innovative workshops designed to unite community members with professional musicians. These sessions have fostered a unique exploration of cultural and communal connections, and the concert boasts a collaborative effort from celebrated artists including Jacqueline Shave, Joely Koos, Catrin Finch, and Kuljit Bhamra. Together, they’ll present an evening of eclectic music spanning various cultures and eras. Expect a blend of improvisation, folk, and classical music that celebrates the resilience of humanity, offering stories of hope and beauty emerging from adversity. The initiative not only showcases diverse musical traditions but also highlights the transformative power of the arts in bridging communities and inspiring individuals in uncertain times. 6 June, 2 Regent’s Park Road, NW1 (020 7485 2206; efdss.org)

BOOK

Nineteen Eighty-Four

The Folio Society marks 75 years of George Orwell’s seminal work with a limited-edition release, restricted to just 750 copies. In collaboration with The Orwell Foundation, this collectors’ edition epitomises the chilling dystopian narrative that’s captivated global audiences. The book boasts eight dramatic full-page illustrations by design duo La Boca (of Black Swan poster fame); it comes housed in a striking metallic cloth binding and a mirrored box that conceals exclusive collectibles; and it boasts a fresh introduction by acclaimed novelist Elif Shafak, who draws parallels between Orwell’s fictional world and contemporary realities, with insights into the novel’s enduring relevance. That the anniversary coincides with the rise of AI, turbulent changes in social media, presidential elections, and birth of reality TV (Candid Camera also turns 75 this year) is doubleplusgood.

A FOOT INN THE DOOR

With a play, an improv show and a new job hosting The Great British Sewing Bee, Kiell Smith-Bynoe has never been busier, and it’s all thanks to the school nativity, he tells us

by Alex Beer Styling by Toni Caroline Hair by Mucktaru Kargbo Grooming by Vaneza Londoño Shot on location at Jumeirah Carlton Tower

“Shall we start by talking about The Government Inspector,” I ask, at the beginning of my phone interview with Kiell Smith-Bynoe. “It’s not a great line, for a minute there I thought you said shall we start by talking about the government,” he laughs. “I wouldn’t know where to start…”

Kiell is partway through a five-week run of Nikolai Gogol’s satire at the Marylebone Theatre. Directed by Patrick Myles, the cast includes his Ghosts co-star Martha HoweDouglas and Shooting Stars’ Dan Skinner. Myles’ hilarious new adaptation of this classic comedy tells the story of an over-privileged, vainglorious liar who is mistaken for a highranking government inspector by the corrupt local officials of an English parochial town. Desperate to cover up their crimes and escape censure, the town’s Governor and his cronies pull out all the stops to try and bribe this dishonest buffoon with money, wine and women.

Kiell plays Percy, the lead. “It’s a bit of a new experience for me, because I haven’t done a play, play – a proper play – for about eight years now. So, it’s new, I mean the play is not new in any way, it’s almost 200 years old, but it is still extremely relevant to today, and what’s going on in politics at the moment. It brings up a few things to ponder. And yeah, it is a lot of fun. I get to be really silly; Percy is a really fun character, and not like anything I’ve done before,” he says.

He is, he says, very glad that he didn’t go with his first instinct to turn down the audition. “It came through my agent; they just asked if I would be up for it. I was like, ‘I don’t want to do a play…’,” he recalls. “It’s been a tough year for TV, I think. There’s a lot of uncertainty in terms of work, like what’s coming next, or if something’s coming at all. And you have got to make good business decisions, as well as choosing things that you are passionate about. So, you say: ‘OK, how much am I earning? Am I going to make any money?’ And plays are not notorious for being money spinners, so, you know, I was really hoping that a nice TV part, or maybe a film or something like that would come up… I was like, come

on, I don’t want to do theatre, but then I read it, and I loved it. I had to do it.”

The job represented a bit of a mindshift for Kiell. “I’m an improviser, always have been, the idea of getting on a stage, just walking on stage, is really easy. So, despite the fact that I hadn’t been in a play for eight years or however long it is, I’d been on stage because I’ve been in my live shows. I’m really comfortable on a stage. I guess it’s like the idea of a tennis player learning to play badminton. Where you’re like, well, it’s got some of the same bits, but it’s really quite different. I have to remind myself: ‘Oh no, that is the line, and I have to say that line because that’s someone else’s cue so that they can say their line’. So, there’s remembering all of that stuff, but also, there’s an apprehension that comes from inanimate objects. We had a… I was about to say incident then, but incident is quite strong! For my entrance in the second act, I sort of storm on, and I’m completely dishevelled, and I think I dishevelled myself a little too much, because my waistcoat was hanging off, and as I stormed onto the stage, it got caught on the door handle, and just ripped the door handle and half of my waistcoat off. And in an improv show, you could just sort of make a joke about that. But when you’re doing a classical piece, an ensemble piece, everyone needs to be on the same page. So, when things like that happen, it’s just very obvious that it’s a mistake.”

There’ll be a chance to flex those improv muscles again very soon, though, when Kiell brings Kool Story Bro to the Theatre Royal Stratford East later this month. “My baby!”, he exclaims when I ask him about it. “It’s the most fun… It’s just me and my mates being silly. The whole idea of the show is that we get stories from the audience, and we improvise scenes based on the stories that we have been told. And sometimes the stories are quite tame and boring, and we have to do a lot to make it more entertaining for a wider audience. But sometimes, we actually have to make it tamer, because some stories are mental! Absolutely wild,” he laughs.

“So, we’re doing 7 June, which I’m really looking forward to. But then also we’re doing six nights in Edinburgh, which will be great, because that’s where the show started. So, it will be a sort of one year anniversary of the show – we’ve only done it about 10 times. So, I’m really looking forward to getting into a six-night run, and just finding out what’s happening in all these mad people’s lives! We’d love to do a tour as well… go and do it for like a proper regional audience, who I feel will be less, ummmm, what’s the right word? They might be more inclined to share their stories than a London audience, who I find can be sort of like, ‘Well, there might be someone here who knows me…’.”

We’ll be seeing Kiell’s face on television screens this month, too, when The Great British Sewing Bee returns with him as presenter. It is perhaps not the most obvious of castings, how did it come about, I ask. “I was a contestant two years ago on the Christmas special, and I did what I would call, the best that I could! Whether or not that was enough, I don’t know, but that is what I did. And I had a nice time. And then I got a DM from Patrick, last year, last summer, asking if I’d like to do Sewing Bee. And I was like, ‘Have you forgotten that I have already done it?’,” he laughs. “And he was like, ‘No, I mean the main gig’. And I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ And yeah, turns out that they were asking me to present it, and it was a bit like with the play, initially, I was like: ‘No! I don’t want to present the Sewing Bee’. And then I thought about it, and considered it, and then went: ‘Yeeeah… yeah, I could do that…’.”

“I think if someone did some STATISTICS , an Excel spreadsheet, they would FIND that most of the PEOPLE that went into a career in the MEDIA were innkeepers. I’d say that comes from a JEALOUSY at not being cast as JOSEPH , or ANGEL GABRIEL ”

And he is very glad that he had a change of heart. “I had a great time. It’s so different from anything I’ve ever done before. I think I’ve got a whole new respect for presenters –I mean, I already had a respect for presenters, but I’ve got a whole new level of respect for them now,” he tells me. “It is such a hard job, especially when you’re dealing with people’s real lives. You know, this is a competition, and people want to win, and they want to stay in the competition, and it means a lot to them. And sometimes they know that what they’ve done is not going to cut it. And that might be what makes the difference between them staying in the competition or going home. And you sort of have to manage those emotions, as well as just carrying on presenting the show, and keeping with the format of the show – you have to go over and say, what are you up to? Even though you know they need half an hour to get their head down and they’ve only got five minutes. So yeah, it’s very difficult. And it’s quite hard to pitch as

June 2024 | FABRIC MAGAZINE | 31 LUXURY LONDON LIVING Interview / LIFESTYLE

well. You know, things that I might find funny, I have to sometimes think, OK, this is for a mainstream BBC One audience, so maybe take that joke out! You have to do quite a lot of editing as you go, which is new for me, it’s not something I’ve really had to do before.”

Aside from teaching him new work skills, I wonder if it might have sparked a new hobby. Has he been sewing since filming wrapped? “Absolutely not! Not at all,” he chuckles. “I mean, I learnt some words, sure. I know what cross-stitch means; I could correctly identify an overlocker… Aside from that, I’m useless!”

Performing clearly comes naturally to Kiell. “I’ve wanted to do it since I was four years old,” he tells me. “Before I even really understood that it was something you could do as a job. I’m part of the alumni of nativity play innkeepers. I think if someone did some statistics, an Excel spreadsheet, they

would find that most of the people that went into a career in the media were innkeepers. I’d say that comes from a jealousy at not being cast as Joseph, or Angel Gabriel. I think that’s what gives you that motivation.”

From innkeeping, he says that he went on to take every dramatic opportunity that came his way. “Saturday drama school, then after school drama and summer school drama. Then Theatre Royal Stratford East Youth Theatre, then East 15 drama school. Then I was doing YouTube sketches and skits… ” he reels off his CV. “I started doing sketches and writing with Kayvan Novak just after Fonejacker and Facejacker. And then I was also auditioning, as well.” The parts eventually started coming, as Dean the estate agent in Channel 4’s Stath Lets Flats and as Brummie nobody Jovell in BBC’s Man Like Mobeen. And from there, the part of Mike in Ghosts

The beloved grown-up comedy from the Horrible Histories crew came to an end after four glorious seasons with last year’s Christmas special. Was Kiell sad to bid it goodbye?

“Oh yeah, definitely! I mean, not as sad as some of the people who stop me in the street and tell me that I made their kid cry, but, still quite sad about it,” he says. What he’d really love now, though, would be a nice meaty role in a drama. “Oh, get me in a drama!” He exclaims. “I mean that’s what Dreamland was,” he says, recalling his role in Merman’s six-part adaptation of Sharon Horgan’s short tackling the darker side of family dynamics. “Dreamland was perfect: it was a great job, it was a great cast, great group of people, the scripts were amazing, the character was really good. It came out and I was like, yeah, it is really good. And then someone just said, ‘Nah, don’t want series two’. And I was like, ‘What? I cried in that’. I mean, sure it was all the tear stick, but I made the noises! So, yeah, I was actually gutted; I did think that was the start of my journey into drama. I mean, going back to your question of why I wanted to do the play – it was because I wanted to show that I can act seriously. That’s why I started this thing, and I have sort of come off that road a little bit, by doing panel show stuff, and entertainment, hosting the The Great British Sewing Bee and that’s all good, but it’s also important to remember what the plan is. What I wanted, and what I want, which is to act. And I wasn’t getting paid anything for that nativity, so it shouldn’t be a thing now!”

So, what’s the dream role? “I wanna get on a horse,” he laughs. “You are probably thinking you can do that in your own time, but no, I want to do a period drama. Yeah, a period drama villain. I would love a bit of that! A good one though. Could you make that happen?” Never say never… The Great British Sewing Bee airs weekly at 9pm on Tuesdays on BBC One, and is available to stream on iPlayer. Kiell is starring in The Government Inspector at Marylebone Theatre until 15 June. Kiell Smith Bynoe: Kool Story Bro is at Theatre Royal Stratford East on 7 June. Tickets on sale now

JUMEIRAH CARLTON TOWER

The height of sophistication, this five-star hotel rises high above Sloane Street, offering the perfect mix of heritage and contemporary luxury

On location / LIFESTYLE

Jumeirah Carlton Tower cuts a striking figure, towering over London’s most luxurious shopping street. Situated in the heart of Knightsbridge, it boasts one of the world’s most prestigious addresses, just steps away from Harrods and offering views of – and guest access to – the exclusive, private Cadogan Gardens. With service levels to match its location, it is no surprise that the hotel has long attracted an elite clientele. It closed in 2019 to undergo an extensive renovation, reopening two years later having been reimagined for a new generation of discerning guests.

As part of the £100 million works, all the 186 guest rooms were refurbished to the highest standard, incorporating cutting edge in-room technology, and classic, timeless décor. Sumptuous bathrooms feature floor-to-ceiling marble and are stocked with toiletries by Grown Alchemist. The new design offers a sense of tranquillity with an emphasis on light and space in all rooms; to take advantage of the stunning views across London, 87 of the rooms and suites boast a balcony.

All rooms offer access to The Peak Fitness Club, as well as the pool, sauna, steam room and spa. Bathed in natural light and occupying a stunning double height space with a glazed roof on the hotel’s second floor, the 20-metre pool is the longest naturally lit pool in London and utilises innovative ‘PoolSan’ chlorine-free technology, a system that improves water quality while eliminating the need for harmful chemicals. Meanwhile, the spa offers five elegant treatment rooms and a luxurious relaxation area as well as a dedicated consultation room. The extensive spa menu includes a tempting selection of Grown Alchemist, Seed to Skin Tuscany, 111Skin and Omorovicza treatments for face and body.

Living up to its name, The Peak Fitness Club is located on the ninth floor; full-length windows ensure that this is an equally light filled space, offering jaw dropping views as you work out. Possibly London’s most exclusive private health and wellness club, the facilities are open to a strictly limited number of members, alongside hotel guests. A selection of bespoke Technogym equipment and an extensive programme of group fitness classes ensure that everyone can enjoy their preferred method of training. Additionally, hotel guests and members have access to the two all-weather tennis courts in the private Cadogan Gardens. Workout over, the members’ Club Lounge area, with its staggering wall of windows, beckons. It is the ultimate spot to relax, network, or make yourself at home while enjoying the all-day menu of drinks and snacks. This truly is a world-class wellbeing experience in a five-star setting. jumeirah.com

YOUR DAY, YOUR WAY

Looking for wonderful wedding inspiration? We asked two leading wedding planners to reveal the trends they’ve loved seeing at this year’s most stylish soirées

For a ceremony that is so rooted in tradition, weddings are ever evolving, reflecting fashions and the world around us. It should be a once in a lifetime event, so it goes without saying that you want it to be unforgettable, but with so many ideas out there, how do you choose the ones that will make it a day to remember? Especially when you add in the complication of family expectation – anyone who has planned their own day knows that this can weigh heavy, and balancing that with creating something that feels special to you can be tricky.

In search of inspiration, we asked Sarah Balfour from Orchid Events, and Matthew Shaw from Sauveur to share some of the best bits of the weddings they’ve planned recently – although both agree that when it comes to weddings, it’s always best to avoid trends and do something that is ultimately personal.

“Our weddings are as unique as our couples, and we love to embrace the special details of their story to make the day truly about them,” Sarah points out. “With that in mind, we’re not always guided by ‘what’s in’ and ‘what’s out’, more that if it feels right and appropriate for our couple then it’s 100 per cent ‘in’ no matter what the trendsetters say!”

Matthew agrees: “At Sauveur our ethos/mission is to ensure that each client’s event or wedding experience is as unique as possible – not a ‘copy’ of what’s on Pinterest or currently trending,” he explains. “That said, in the ever-evolving world of weddings, there are things that work really well.” Here are a few of their suggestions.

SCULPTURAL FLORALS

“Immersive floral installations are a beautiful way to elevate your wedding,” says Sarah. “This is all about creating a cohesive floral story from ceremony to reception, bridal bouquets to buttonholes, which flows through all elements of your big day.

And this isn’t just about flowers – think foliage rich arches, tree-lined aisles, tablescapes with moss and pea-lights, or even cloud effect ceiling-hung installations which mix fresh with everlasting flowers and grasses.

Taking decadent floral displays to the max level can be breathtaking, and working with some incredible floral artists, we’ve adored seeing this trend bloom! More of this in 2024/2025 please!”

MORE VARIETY IN ENTERTAINMENT

The days of the disengaged DJ are gone. “Today, more of the couples we work with are moving away from simply ‘booking a band’ or a couple of other performances throughout the day/evening,” Matthew tells us. “By adding more diversity and getting creative with the entertainment that’s available – be this using performers to guide guests to the next location, booking immersive artists to engage with guests, or planning surprise moments throughout the evening – the result is a more enjoyable, interesting experience for everyone, and one that evolves across the whole of the wedding day and evening.

Try being creative with the entertainment available; depending on the venue, couples have the opportunity to move their guests around the wedding’s location to create a more exciting, involved experience that elevates the entire wedding experience – rather than just watching ‘one or two performances’.”

DOCUMENTARY WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEOGRAPHY

If you’re compiling a list of staged group shots, you might like to consider something different. “In a thankful step away from staged and posed shots, we’re loving the continued rise of documentary style photography and videography,” Sarah reveals. “In a world where every moment is captured, this style embraces the naturally candid and spontaneous moments of a wedding. It feels so much more authentic and represents a truer representation of how unique every wedding is. We’re delighted to work with couples who want to capture their special day in such a way and have wonderful relationships with incredible photographers and videographers who are skilled at capturing the essence of a wedding. We feel that this will be the go-to standard for wedding photography now and can’t wait to see how the weddings that we are orchestrating over the next few years will be captured!”

EXTENDING THE CELEBRATIONS

Ask any bride and groom and they’ll probably tell you they didn’t want their day to end. And there’s no reason why you shouldn’t extend the party if you want to. “We have seen more requests to separate out the different elements of a wedding celebration, which allows the couple, and their guests, to focus on each event,” Matthew tells us. “The traditional wedding consists of a ceremony which then rolls straight into a drinks reception and sometimes a rather early dinner. The timings of this can be difficult to get right from a guest experience point of view. With this in mind, a number of our couples have opted to have a morning ceremony and then leave the afternoon free for guests to relax (or explore a new destination!) before regrouping in the evening for the reception and dinner. This can be a great way of programming your day and also ensures your guests arrive at the evening celebrations fresh and ready to party.

An alternative is to host your wedding with a more relaxed dinner and dancing on the first day, and then really get into the party spirit the next day. This can be great if you have quite a mixed guest list as it allows everyone to get to know each other before coming back together for round two.”

BLENDING CULTURES

Weddings celebrate the coming together of two people, often from very different backgrounds; something that both Sarah and Matthew are seeing is a desire to bring these differences into the day.

“At Sauveur we are noticing more and more that people are wanting to weave their two cultures together to create a new experience,” Matthew explains. “By blending and combining elements from each of their cultures, the result can be truly unique, enjoyable and spectacular.”

Sarah agrees, telling us: “There’s nothing more romantic to us than a love story that transcends borders and we love to work with couples who embrace each other’s family heritage to compose a truly unique fusion wedding.” So how to do it?

“Think décor, music, lighting, food...” She suggests. “Multicultural celebrations can be the most joyous occasions and a feast for all the senses.”

It can be eye-opening, too, believes Matthew. “Last year we planned a winter wedding in London that wove together Azeri, Italian and traditional English heritages to create something totally new. For those in attendance, on each side, the guests were familiar with their own traditions, but by blending new cultures, they had the opportunity to discover and celebrate something totally new and unique, too.” orchidevents.co.uk; sauveurstudios.com

MARYLEBONE SMILE

CLINIC’S MINI SMILE MAKEOVER

Remember that episode of Friends where Chandler and Monica go to get engagement pictures taken? I am Chandler when faced with a camera, contorting my face into the most ridiculous expressions. My excuse? My teeth. They are a little crooked (not enough to warrant a teenage brace, mind), chipped at the front (goodness knows how), and bear the evidence of my penchant for coffee. I’m so intent on hiding them that I will only ever allow myself to smile with my mouth closed –more gurn than smile, if I’m honest.

I’ve a big event coming up, though, and am determined to do something about it, but I don’t have long for my transformation. Not to worry, Dr Sahil Patel assures me, after assessing my teeth, he’s confident that he can transform them in time – he even produces a simulation to demonstrate how it might look. The cosmetic dentist and founder of Marylebone Smile Clinic has created a three-part Mini Smile Makeover that’s minimally invasive, pain-free and guarantees results in as little as an hour (with some aftercare at home).

His clinic, on the world-famous Harley Street is smart and spa-like, with high ceilings, period features, and vast windows letting in the natural light. It is furnished in a chic, minimalist way, even the chair gives off mid-century lounger vibes, rather than the utilitarian look more commonly associated with a dentist’s chair. And when it is tipped back, it affords the perfect view of the ceiling-mounted television (Dirty Dancing is playing – the perfect distraction).

We start with a thorough dental examination, checking gum and tooth condition before moving on to a full mouth professional clean – or “stain blasting” as Dr Patel refers to it. The innovative high-pressure cleaning system uses a fine jet of compressed air, water and fine powder, which combine to gently blast away the surface stains from each tooth. Next up, a spot of subtle contouring, known as enameloplasty. With this, Dr Patel is focusing not just on the chipped tooth, but also two of my top incisors, which have a

slightly rounded, bulbous shape, which makes my teeth look crooked. By filing these surfaces down gently, the teeth will appear more aligned. The process uses aluminum oxide impregnated discs, which rotate at high speed, almost like a sanding machine. It sounds awful, but it really isn’t – I can barely feel it. And we work bit by bit, checking progress in the mirror to ensure that I am happy with the results and that we do not go too far. Dr Patel’s touch is light and masterful, and the immediate change is remarkable.

Afterwards, moulds are taken of my teeth in order to make bespoke whitening trays which will be sent to me at home. I’m given a set including peroxide solution and instructions on how to use it. Even before whitening the results are quite staggering – I barely recognise my own mouth. And after using the whitening kit consistently, it just gets better. Come the big day I can’t wipe the smile from my face. LSJ

The Mini Smile Makeover is priced at £695. 66 Harley Street, W1G (020 7126 8526; marylebonesmileclinic.co.uk)

ON FASHION: KATE HALFPENNY

Halfpenny London’s founder and creative director on breaking the rules with her British-made bridal brand

What’s your brand philosophy? We make creative, inclusive British Bridalwear which empowers women to express their individuality and feel incredible. Clothes have enormous power. Your choice of outfit can completely change how you feel, and tell the world so much about who you are. When I was younger, finding my own style gave me freedom to be unapologetically myself. When I was growing up there were so many dos and don’ts in fashion, so many standards and expectations about what we were supposed to look like. Fortunately, I’ve always been a fan of breaking the rules! Finding my tribe of amazing women – who are all so confident dressing for themselves – was life changing for me. They gave me the confidence to discover my own, unique style. It set me free, and that’s what we do every day at Halfpenny London.

Describe your bridal style? I very much design from the heart and I’m not interested in any trends. My tastes are very eclectic, my inspirations come from nature, architecture and art, so this is reflected in my pieces. There’s often a juxtaposition within my designs – a beautiful contrasting trim for example, or a graphic silhouette in an ultra-feminine fabric. I love experimenting with textiles, allowing myself the freedom to play with proportions and break the rules. I create beautiful pieces that excite me, push the boundaries, and –more importantly – make brides feel like the very best version of themselves when they wear them.

How do you want women wearing your bridalwear to feel? I want women to feel like they’re truly expressing themselves when wearing one of my dresses. I want them to light up and feel beautiful, powerful and completely at peace. We always know when a bride finds ‘the one’. Some brides get so overwhelmed with emotion they burst into tears but for others it’s much more subtle – their eyes light up and they stand straighter, walking out of the fitting room with their head high. It’s such a great feeling to watch it happen!

Is there anyone you’d really love to see wearing one of your pieces? I spent years as a celebrity stylist before starting Halfpenny London and I’ve been lucky enough to dress some incredible women

2005, originally as a bespoke bridal dress business born from private commissions 42 | FABRIC MAGAZINE | June 2024 LUXURY LONDON LIVING

like Rihanna, Kate Moss and Cate Blanchett. While that’s absolutely wonderful and lots of fun, there’s honestly nothing like working with any bride and giving her that once in a lifetime experience.

What do you see as being the big trends in bridalwear this year? The modern veil. I’ve always loved veils and it’s always fun to experiment every season to discover a new take on this tradition. In our new collection we have a number of chic options, from the blue Kahlo veil cut to the floor at the front and short at the back to showcase an incredible statement back, or the cocoon-like Emma veil, which is nipped in at the waist or hips. For me, veils are the ultimate wedding day accessory.

I’m also very excited by lace and so are our brides. At the very beginning of the brand – almost 20 years ago now – I used a lot of the most beautiful French lace in my collection and I’ve brought it back in this season in a nod to Halfpenny London’s heritage. I always like to add in a contrasting trim or graphic shaped sleeve or some other detail for a contemporary take. Lace used in a modern silhouette can be the perfect balance of contemporary and traditional.

Can you tell us about the role of sustainability in your business? Sustainability is such a big word, and we do everything we can, day to day, while we’re on our path towards it. The nature of our business is that we’re made to order, so nothing ends up in landfill. Even our off cuts are repurposed into embellishments for new collections, or donated to schools or universities to inspire the next generation, and we support organisations like Peatbog and SeaTrees to help offset our carbon footprint. We are proud to design with a conscience.

What’s next for Halfpenny London? We have lots of exciting plans and upcoming collaborations which we can’t wait to shout about. I’m just about to start work on the collection for next April and I’m brimming with ideas. It’s such an exciting time and I love working in an industry that’s so full of love and passion for what we do. It’s a huge privilege making a bride’s dress and it’s something I’ll never, ever take for granted. Flagship boutique, 10 Woburn Walk, WC1H (020 7388 7300; halfpennylondon.com)

The LOUIS XIII Caviar Experience invites guests to pair a glass of LOUIS XIII cognac with a choice of exclusive Beluga or Osciètre caviar. The large, lustrous pearls of the former offer a buttery essence that complements the intricate notes of Louis XIII without overshadowing them. The latter, meanwhile, has a nutty, slightly sweet profile, that elegantly accentuates the floral and fruity undertones of Louis XIII, accentuating its complexity. Either choice comes accompanied by traditional garnishes and offers an indulgent experience that promises to elevate the palate for an elite tasting ceremony. WINE

In the pink

Celebrating a wedding or special occasion this summer? Toast the event in style with Veuve Clicquot’s newest cuvée, the divine La Grande Dame Rosé 2015. The new vintage rosé harmoniously blends the sun-filled 2015 vintage with the precision, depth, and character of Pinot Noir. Spice notes, such as pepper, nutmeg, and clove, intertwine with the delicate aromas of red fruit, as well as floral hints of rose and violet. It has been created as a tribute to Madame Clicquot, who defied conventional practices by blending the red wine from her beloved ‘Clos Colin’ parcel with her white wine. Criticised at first, she is now acknowledged as the inventor of rosé Champagne. For the first time in its history, Veuve Clicquot has collaborated with an artist to reimagine the bottle and giftbox for this very special release. For the box, Italian ceramicist Paola Paronetto has chosen a vibrant light pink that expresses both the freshness and the depth of the cuvée. It has been made sustainably in France from 100 per cent natural hemp paper and 100 per cent reusable and recyclable cardboard. £205 (clos19.com)

INGREDIENTS

• Oil, for greasing • 150g Kent strawberries, hulled and sliced, to serve

Pancake batter

• 130g plain flour • 10g caster sugar • 1½ tsp baking powder • Pinch of fine sea salt • 35g yoghurt • 1 egg • 120g whole milk • 20g unsalted butter, melted

Vanilla crème anglaise

• 125ml whole milk • 125ml whipping cream • 1 vanilla pod, split lengthways and seeds scraped out

• 60g egg yolks (from about 3–4 eggs) • 40g caster sugar

Poached Yorkshire rhubarb

• 300ml water • 50g caster sugar • 20g grenadine syrup (optional) • 1 vanilla pod

• 200g Yorkshire rhubarb, trimmed and cut into segments

METHOD

Pancake batter

The day before you plan to make the dish, blend the batter ingredients in a blender or a food processor. Transfer to a bowl, cover and leave to rest in the fridge overnight.

Vanilla crème anglaise

Heat the milk, cream and vanilla seeds in a saucepan over a medium heat until steamy. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar in a large bowl until smooth. Whisking constantly, gradually add the hot milk mixture to the beaten egg and sugar until completely incorporated, then pour the mixture back into the saucepan and heat, whisking, to 82°C on a kitchen thermometer. As soon as the temperature is reached, immediately strain the mixture into a heatproof bowl. The

crème anglaise will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days and can be served hot or cold.

Poached Yorkshire rhubarb

Place the water, sugar, grenadine syrup, if using, and vanilla pod in a saucepan and bring to a simmer. Add the rhubarb and simmer gently for about 5–6 minutes until the rhubarb starts to soften but is still holding its shape. Remove from the heat and keep warm.

Pancakes

Lightly grease a frying pan and an 8cm cake ring with oil. Heat the frying pan over a medium heat and add the cake ring. Pour a 1 cm depth of pancake batter into the cake ring and cook for 2 minutes, then remove the ring and, using a flat spatula, carefully flip the pancake. Cook for a further 2 minutes or until the underside is golden brown. Remove to a plate and repeat to make 8 pancakes.

To finish

Spoon some crème anglaise onto each plate and top with 2 pancakes. Add some rhubarb and sliced strawberries to the top of each and serve.

With

idyllic beaches and stunning scenery, Mauritius sets the scene for an unforgettable honeymoon, and it is home to some of the world’s most romantic hotels

There are 200 individually designed rooms and suites across the resort; interiors offer thoughtful touches of local character – think custom-made furniture and artworks. All come with exquisite sea views and many boast direct access to the sandy shores. For those who prefer to lounge poolside, there are two to choose between, one set in a palm grove that is reserved for adults-only, and features a whirpool tub and double daybeds. Delectable food and drink options include innovative Asian cuisine at Le Bazar; exquisite Japanese fare at Kushi; classical Indian cuisine with Mauritian influences at Safran; and unforgettable, bespoke private dining experiences courtesy of the resort’s exclusive Dine by Design program. CONSTANCE PRINCE MAURICE

This luxury hideaway boasts an idyllic location on the island’s north-east coast, on the outskirts of Bras D’Eau National Park. There are 89 suites and villas here, set in low built, thatched buildings spread across 60 hectares of verdant tropical gardens – our favourites are the overwater lagoon villas that sit on stilts above the mangrove, offering the ultimate escape from it all. Loungers and palm-fringed parasols line the main stretch of beach, where a water sports centre offers complimentary paddleboarding, water skiing, snorkelling, and kayaking. Afterwards, soothe aching muscles at the spa, where the extensive menu offers classic treatments that use organic products from the Indian Ocean; exclusive Sisley Phyto-aromatic treatments; and a Brice Nicham range of pedis and manis. All of which should work up an appetite, which can be ably sated at one of the resorts’ three excellent eateries, among them the romantic Barachois, Mauritius’ only floating restaurant, specialising in authentic flavours from the Indian Ocean. constancehotels.com

FOUR SEASONS RESORT MAURITIUS AT ANAHITA

There’s much to love here, including stylish accommodation in thatched pool villas, and a Zen-like spa on stilts in the mangrove. Spread throughout tropical gardens on a secluded lagoon, the resort is home to 90 one and two-bedroom villas, 45 private retreats ranging from two to five bedrooms, and the jewel in its crown, the five-bedroom Royal Island Sanctuary, which boasts not one, but two private swimming pools. There are seven restaurants and a lagoon-front bar to choose between, serving a mix of cuisines, including Mauritian, Creole, Indian and Italian. All are excellent but be sure not to miss Acquapazza by the Michelin starred Chef Marco Garfagnini. Meanwhile, in the spa, a menu of locally inspired treatments is on offer, using products made with ingredients harvested in the garden here. For those who are feeling more energetic, there are a host of activities available, including glass bottom boat tours, windsurfing and waterskiing, as well as guided mangrove tours to learn about the resort’s conservation work. A POCKET OF PARADISE

Sirru Fen Fushi: where modern Maldivian hospitality blends with white sand beaches, swaying palms, and a sweeping turquoise lagoon

When it comes to dream destinations, you’d be hard pushed to top the Maldives With the prospect of escaping the London drizzle making it even more fantastical, we leave our world behind and set off on a civilised early evening flight, first to Doha, then on to Malé, where we stretch our legs and indulge in an afternoon tea complete with cucumber sandwiches and strawberry tarts in the serene airport lounge. The quintessential Englishness of it is not lost on us, and feeling giddy with half-sleep, we have no idea of date, or time, and nor do we want to.

Our final leg of the journey is by seaplane, courtesy of Trans Maldivian Airways, and we’re beyond excited to board our mini aircraft with the thrum of the engine and the splash of the water finally waking us up. Only from here can you truly get a sense of the vastness of this archipelagic state with its chain of 26 atolls stretching out across the impossibly blue horizon.

We are greeted at Sirru Fen Fushi, first by a stately heron, whose job is to pose by the water’s edge silhouetted by a pink sky, watching the seaplanes come in and out. And secondly, by the linen-clad staff who give us a traditional Boduberu welcome including drums and handclaps, ice cold towels and fresh coconuts to sip from. It feels entirely White Lotus, and coupled with the sleep deprivation, it is perfectly – brilliantly – surreal. That famous Maldivian hospitality rings true.

to our Beach Sunrise villa, and the wows keep on coming. We have our own pushbikes parked outside ornate, jade painted gates, through which we find our luxurious home for the next few nights. It is huge, and we’re thrilled to discover that this commodious thatched building and its surrounding lush garden – complete with sundappled plunge pool – is ours alone to indulge in. The interiors are a contemporary take on ’70s boho chic, with natural colours reflecting the pale sand and the turquoise waters, successfully blurring the lines between indoors and out. But there’s dark drama, too. A vast black macramé hanging drapes from the vaulted ceiling and hugs the headboard of our super king-sized bed like a manta ray. Our private tropical garden opens up directly onto the beach, offering a secluded slice of paradise with the ocean just a few steps away. With toes in the sand and drinks in hand, we watch the sunset paint the sky in hues of fiery orange and soft pink.

A hilariously wobbly, but thankfully short bike ride (we hadn’t been on one of those since lockdown), brings us to the buzzing Raha Market for a perfectly relaxed buffet dinner with its plethora of local and international flavours and influences. The bustling marketplace setting, combined with seemingly endless choices, makes for an exciting culinary discovery, and we have eyes bigger than stomachs. We’re thrilled to discover this will also be the setting for the most indulgent, leisurely breakfasts to come, and we can’t wait.

A highlight of our stay is the guided snorkel. Led by passionate marine biologist and on-site turtle expert, Neus Segura, we explore the island’s vibrant house reef, a thriving ecosystem bustling with marine life including various species of fish, rays, and sea turtles. This immersive experience proves an eye-opener, and we gain a newfound appreciation of the ocean’s wonders, but more specifically, the biodiversity of the Maldives. Our visit to the Coralarium – an innovative underwater art installation by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, which doubles as an artificial reef – further impresses on us the

resort’s commitment to sustainability. As does its partnership with neighbouring island Goidhoo, on which local primary schoolchildren are involved in manually cleaning up the beaches. Our trip takes a delightfully unexpected turn as we’re invited to visit the island and get stuck in with the kids, ridding the sandy stretches of polluting plastic bottles and discarded fishing nets. Of course, we are welcomed like royalty here, with the drums, and the handclaps, and floral garlands placed delicately over our heads, and we are more than happy to help with their quest. The fruits of our labour – shockingly huge bags of plastic rubbish –come back with us on the boat and ingeniously, are recycled at the resort’s own sustainability lab, into brightly coloured products big and small, from contemporary furniture pieces to turtleshaped keepsakes.

Our hard graft is rewarded with an indulgent signature massage at the tranquil spa, designed as a veritable oasis, and offering a serene space to rejuvenate amongst the natural beauty surrounding us. As we peacefully drift in and out of sleep, we cannot want for anything more. Until thoughts of food come around again, and here, we have our fill of decadent dinners, at Japanese restaurant Kata, with its modern menu of sushi and sashimi; and at fine dining eatery Azure, with its creative seafood offering. Both are a pescatarian’s dream.

While we’ve packed a lot in, much of our time here is spent blissfully soaking up the sunshine in our private pool with a coffee and a gripping summer read in hand – the pace of the island is deliciously slow, and so it is with slight trepidation that we agree to move over to the other side of the resort. (Note that “we” did none of the moving, that was all taken care of by attentive staff in a buggy). Sad to say goodbye to our little beach-side Eden, but excited to see what comes next, we find ourselves in an even more luxurious Water Sunset villa, this time, an over-water thatched residence on stilts that manages to be even bigger, and somehow more glamorous than our previous

abode: think enormous oversized copper bath, an art deco inspired mirrored screen divider in bright jade rattan, and enough luxurious space to genuinely forget where you placed your welcome glass of fizz for a full five minutes. The landscape is different on this side, too, slightly wilder, with the sea comparatively lively, and lapping underneath us. It would be a crime not to take full advantage and dive straight in.

It’s all gone too quickly and our final evening at Sirru Fen Fushi is a fittingly indulgent one. We enjoy a farewell hosted dinner under the stars in the grounds of the resort’s pièce de résistance, the beautiful Beach Tented villa. Complete with twinkling fairy lights and the soothing sounds of the ocean, it is the perfect ending to a truly spectacular stay. A dream, in fact.

A HOME LESS ORDINARY

We catch up with Harriet Cotterill on her eponymous practice, and her natural progression from fashion to interiors

What drew you to interior design, and what were you doing beforehand?

I worked as a stylist in fashion, music and advertising. I travelled widely and enjoyed working with different teams of professionals, and the variety of the work. When my son was born, being abroad and away from home for long periods was no longer an attractive option and I sought a career that would enable me to work locally. I’ve found many skills are transferable from fashion to interiors, from dealing with clients and working well in a team, to choosing and putting styles and looks together, and producing and organising shoots. My training has given me an expert understanding of fabric and fibres, helping me in my ability to choose materials and create successful colour schemes through layering and matching textures, colours and prints.

How would you sum up your design ethos?

Creating beautiful, unique spaces filled with character! I love the challenge of working in period properties, working with the bones of the building, accentuating the features and making

the most of the spaces I am presented with. I then choose the colours and work up the scheme incorporating textures, prints and lighting. I design with the era of the property as a guide, but will still create a contemporary feel by mixing modern elements with traditional. I’m also mindful of the environment when designing, and source vintage and antique furniture and fittings, often reupholstering found or clients’ furniture. I also try and source from local artisans and craftspeople here in the UK, and the paint I use is always eco-friendly.

What can clients expect from a Harriet Cotterill project? I enjoy working with my clients and listen intently to their brief. I come back to them with innovative and inspiring solutions to any problems they might have in their homes. I work to understand the needs, habits and lifestyle of the family in order to redesign their home. I create mood boards and visuals so that the clients have a clear understanding of what’s proposed. And I like to go above and beyond what the client might be expecting. My attention to detail and expert eye help bring the project to life.

What’s been your most enjoyable project so far? I’ve been very lucky to work with one particular client on several projects and their central London house is a favourite. It’s a 1920s mansion located in Marylebone, which was used during World War II as the headquarters of the French Resistance in London! The property was reimagined with wood panelling and intricate carved mouldings. I increased the height and width of the doors to make grand entrances, installed hand-made tiles in the kitchen and hallway, and hung exquisite chandeliers. I sourced statement antiques and reupholstered some of the clients’ own items. I commissioned beautiful bespoke cushions which I layered and styled throughout. The kitchen was reconfigured with a redesigned banquette seating area, new doors, worktops and artisan glass lighting. And the bathrooms had handmade chinoiserie wallpaper hung. It’s now a stunning property, which my clients are happy to live in, and they are now proud to host guests.

What’s next for the practice? Any exciting projects coming up? I’m currently designing phase 2 for my clients’ central London house. This will entail redesigning all the guest bedrooms and en suite bathrooms to complement the overall design. I’m also working on a north London fashion designer’s house, which is looking to be a really exciting project. The collaboration is vibrant, individual, and very special. This project involves quirky ideas giving freedom to the client’s sense of fun and their love of the eccentric, but retaining a chic and stylish ambiance. harrietcotterillinteriors.com

Sam Daly’s latest textile collection draws inspiration from an interrailing journey across Europe. Captivated by the architectural intricacies of railway stations – from the intertwining rails to the hanging cables and vivid signage – Sam has ingeniously translated these elements into bold, graphic designs. The collection showcases linear travel patterns through a fusion of distorted weft, smocking knit, and passementerie techniques. Colour is central, infusing vitality into robust fabrics suited for diverse applications like bags, home products, and furnishings. Committed to sustainability, Sam utilises dead stock yarns and innovative methods to reimagine waste materials, emphasising durability and circularity in design. artsthread.com/profile/samdaly

The fluid, ever-changing nature of glass allows her to embrace imperfection creatively, providing a therapeutic respite from her need for structured routine. Marsha Ramlogan and Glen Burns At home with

Bold designs meet functional spaces in this playfully reimagined Victorian home

Marsha and Glen’s vibrant home is a place where bold hues meet thoughtfully curated spaces, reflecting a life full of zest and creativity. Built in 1896, the house proved an exceptional London find: a detached period property boasting two lounges and a wealth of space that immediately captivated the pair when they were house hunting back in 2010. It had already undergone some renovations but ultimately, these adaptations couldn’t accommodate Marsha and Glen’s growing family – the couple now share their home with their ten-year-old twin daughters. “The property was renovated by a developer beforehand where he did two small extensions,” Marsha tells me. “Generally, it was done to a poor standard, and we really wanted to make it our own.”

Motivated by a desire to infuse the space with their personal touch, Marsha and Glen embarked on further renovations to enhance its functionality and to better suit their dynamic family life. “The renovations we’ve done to date have included extending the kids’ bedroom and adding an en suite which, when we had the twins, meant they had loads of space,” Marsha says. “We also extended the kitchen to allow for a dining table closer to it, and in doing so, were able to use the old dining area as a playroomcome-office. Having an extra space away from the kids’ bedroom for toys and storage and playing on the ground floor has transformed our home, and being able to dine in the kitchen area overlooking the garden is perfect in the summer when we can open the bi-folds and enjoy indoor/outdoor living. We’ve also added a dressing room to the principal bedroom, which adds that extra luxury.”

And when it comes to aesthetics? “Our style is very much, ‘punch you in the face’ with colour and pieces that will always make you smile!” Says Marsha. “I’m from the Caribbean, so colour really

speaks to me, and I love clashing unexpected colours. No matter how much I sometimes want to love classic styles, I’m always drawn back to bold colours and interesting artwork.” I ask whether the pair always agree on décor choices. “As a couple we generally agree, but sometimes I have to override my husband’s need for muted colours. Over the years his taste in art has grown to match mine, choosing pieces with bold prints and colours – and sometimes his taste and style is bolder than mine.”

I’m keen to know how the pair found it working with Nathan Kingsbury Design on their latest home projects, in particular their open-concept kitchen/dining room, because Marsha and Glen strike me as dream clients, both playful and fearless in their design choices. “Nathan first did a mirror for our dressing room and a sideboard for the dining room, and since then, working with him has been like a drug,” Marsha laughs. “What was key to us continuing to collaborate with him was the chemistry – like dating! He really understood our style. He respected and admired it and was able to offer designs and décor that matched our style, but I hope he agrees that he

also had a certain amount of freedom to create, as both of us are quite open and not too constrictive in our briefs.”

The kitchen/diner features sleek white cabinetry, boldly outlined in a contemporary neon stripe; a chunky, utilitarian dining table complete with playfully mis-matched seating, all centred within those light-loving bi-folds; and the pièce de résistance: a statement island crafted with mixed metallics including patinated brass and raw oxidised metal for a bright turquoise colour pop that you wouldn’t typically find anywhere near neon yellow – and yet it works beautifully. “The island was the one thing we stipulated to Nathan,” says Marsha. “We wanted the rust metal effect. Nathan then ran with that and came up with the stunning lines and shapes and floating effect you see today. We have so much trust in Nathan, which he continues to earn time and time again, because his design offerings always enhance our brief. And we literally can’t say no when he suggests something.” Dream clients indeed.

That the kitchen island is sculptural and angular and wouldn’t look out of place in a

gallery is entirely in fitting with the property’s overarching aesthetic, where artwork plays a significant role, from bold, colour splashed canvasses to safari-inspired sculptures that can be seen incongruously roaming the garden of this London home. “I must give credit to my husband for the artwork”, says Marsha. “The colour came from me, and he ran with the sculptures. The giraffe, elephants and teacup are all his. Again, I think interest and the unexpected is what draws us to certain pieces. They’re things you don’t usually see.”

Look up and you’ll see spectacular bespoke lighting throughout the house, again, a Kingsbury addition, and again, as much veritable works of art as the pictures on the walls. “The lighting designs are Nathan’s genius,” Marsha says. “For ages, we were looking for something that would be a statement, and not what you’d see in everyone else’s houses. We mentioned this to Nathan and he suggested he could design something that would pick up the architecture of the kitchen lights as well as cast gorgeous and interesting shapes and shadows through the days and seasons. He drew up and presented the designs, and we talked about how it would work, how they would be fitted, how they would fall, if there would be enough light to be practical – and away he went.”

I wonder which room or space has become a favourite – where do the family spend most of their time? “I love the small lounge and kitchen,” says Marsha. “It makes me happy to see both rooms in harmony, and sitting at that island chatting with friends and family really is the heart of our home. We’ve never seen one like it and Nathan spent a lot of time making sure the patination on each piece was exact – which only a true perfectionist would do.” nathankingsbury.com

ON DESIGN: SOILE MAKKONEN

Ada & Ina have all your luxury linen needs covered; we chat to founder Soile on blending natural materials with quality craftsmanship

Tell us about the brand and how it came about Ada & Ina embodies the essence of nature-inspired aesthetics, simplicity, and the allure of linen fabrics. My journey with linen began decades ago while working for a small independent fashion label in Finland. Relocating to the UK at the turn of the century, I encountered a challenge: sourcing quality linen for interiors at reasonable prices proved elusive. I started selling on eBay but soon realised that it was not the right platform, so I established my first online store for selling fabrics only. Recognising that customers desired more than just fabric, I collaborated with skilled artisans, particularly adept women proficient in the art of handcrafted bespoke curtains, and I sought to marry the beauty of linen with their expert craftsmanship. This union not only honoured the fabric but also celebrated the talent and knowledge of these remarkable seamstresses. Along this linen journey, our offerings expanded to include a diverse range of products, such as linen bedding and Ada & Ina’s in-house printed curtain fabric collection.

What’s your design ethos? I want to honour linen fabric and offer affordable luxury fabrics without the luxury price tag. This principle extends to both our plain and printed fabric

collections. Inspired by Scandinavian minimalism and nature, our printed fabrics reflect simplicity and elegance. However, my years of experience with UK clients have shown me the bold and courageous way British people embrace colour in their interiors, which I deeply admire. While designing printed fabric collections, I prefer one-colour prints. This deliberate choice aligns with our vision of creating curtains that are modern yet timeless. I firmly believe that simplicity is key when selecting the perfect fabric for bespoke curtains – less is indeed more!

Tell us about the role of sustainability at Ada & Ina The flax fibre used in linen fabric already boasts a significantly lower environmental impact than cotton, and it is biodegradable. Nevertheless, we are committed to minimising fabric waste as much as possible. In instances where waste is generated, we diligently explore avenues to repurpose it. For instance, we offer fabric remnant bags on our website at a fraction of factory prices, providing customers with materials ideal for crafts and small projects. Additionally, we transform roll ends, an inevitable by-product of the fabric printing process, into Roman blinds and cushion covers. We try to maximise the utility of every piece of fabric while minimising our environmental footprint.

Why should homeowners invest in bespoke window treatments? Opting for high-quality natural fabrics paired with expert craftsmanship guarantees durability over time. There is much more choice in the heading styles, linings, and even in Roman blind chain colours. We have 12 different curtain heading styles to choose from. For instance, hand-finished curtains, such as the very fashionable tailored pleat, which maintain a neat appearance with flawless draping. In bedrooms, it’s important you don’t just cover the window with curtains that have blackout lining – you have to make sure the curtains cover the whole window when closed. By choosing bespoke curtains you can create this hotel curtain look and perfect darkness.

Tell me about the linen bedding offering The ethos driving our linen bedding mirrors that of our fabrics: delivering luxurious bedding at accessible prices. It seamlessly complements our linen fabric range. While white linen remains our top seller, our oatmeal natural linen bedding is gaining significant popularity. Unbleached and undyed, it harmonises beautifully with today’s beige-toned interiors and pairs effortlessly with any colour scheme. Plus, its natural charm only enhances with each wash. Additionally, we’ve injected some vibrancy into our collection with a selection of colours and timeless neutral stripes. Striped linen bedding brings a delightful summer ambiance to any bedroom.

What’s next for the brand? We’re excited to announce the launch of several new prints this spring/summer. And we’re going to enable ordering relaxed Roman blinds directly on our website. While we’ve been offering relaxed blinds for a while, we’re now making it even easier for our clients to place their orders online and hassle-free. linenfabrics.co.uk

The Early Years approach to learning at St Anthony’s is informed by the latest scientific research, and developed to give children the very best educational start

THE EARLY YEARS ADVANTAGE

A St Anthony’s

Early

Years education does not just prepare children for primary years and beyond, it gives those children a significant advantage for accelerated future learning

What is key for young children is that they experience and learn about the world relationally with other children. Peer-to-peer learning affects brain formation up to the age of six years old. Once a child starts thinking for themselves, they keep thinking for themselves, with the evidence suggesting that school-based nurseries have significant long-term benefits in terms of personal and academic development.

The best Early Years settings integrate child learning with childcare. Encouraging boys and girls to make connections with the world around them, whilst forming strong relationships with other children and adults in order to build knowledge and confidence. Once this framework is established, then literacy and numeracy can take hold; in the best Early Years settings one sees an interplay between transmitting didactic teaching with creative pedagogy. Maths and English take priority alongside enquirybased approaches to learning.

Scientific research is clear that the benefits of excellent Early Years learning are transformative for later learning. An OECD study published in January 2020 showed that quality Early Years education makes a significant difference to pupil attainment in the longer term; the key findings in this research emphasised the importance of the highest quality early years learning, as opposed to simpler childcare, to enable this positive effect.

At St Anthony’s, part of The Inspired Education Group, the Early Years approach to learning is informed by the latest developments in cognitive science to ensure the deepest early years learning, and therefore the greatest future accelerant of learning in later academic years for these children.

Inspired’s approach epitomises the necessary quality referred to in a 2020 OECD report, which states that making connections and relationships through enquiry-based learning enables a child to start thinking for themselves, an approach that feeds directly into better literacy and numeracy. The LEGO Foundation report, Learning through Play states that: ‘as children grow, preparing them for the demands of school and the wider society is key… (and whilst) attaining key content and facts is important for school and life, children also need a deep, conceptual understanding that allows them to connect concepts and skills, apply their knowledge to different situations, and spark new ideas’. At St Anthony’s, the creative and exploratory pedagogies used in Early Years prepare children to maximise learning as they move up into the school’s rigorous teacher guided curriculum. Families choose an Inspired approach to Early Years in order to provide their children with a unique advantage compared to others.

It is clear that research is now beginning to underpin what Early Years practitioners have known for years: depth of learning at pre-school level is directly linked to the speed of a pupil’s progression through school. Investing in Early Years is the most potent means of proofing a child’s future success.

Weekly ‘Stay & Play’ sessions enable parents and children to experience the St Anthony’s nursery in action, to book, call 020 7435 0316. For more details, see stanthonysprep.org.uk

Inspiring

Young

Donal Brennan Ivy House School

What attracted you to Ivy House?

It was immediately evident to me that the teaching staff were engaged in a pro-active, caring and considerate relationship with the children they taught. This can be rare in education. To witness this sensitive, positive interaction, in spacious airy classrooms overlooking Golders Hill Park, confirmed that this was a unique learning environment.

What makes it different?

Ivy House is a young school with a distinguished provenance, having been the Jewish Cultural Centre, Middlesex University Arts Department, the home of renowned ballerina Anna Pavlova and the family home of surgeon and anatomist William Bowman. The pioneering work of those who came before us affirms it as a stimulating and exhilarating space to learn. Children are encouraged to question, enquire, and embrace new experiences in lessons where excellent teachers engage in higher-order questioning. This can lead to lightbulb moments and exclamations when children think beyond the predictable.

How would you describe the atmosphere?

It’s infectiously optimistic and positive. The children are assertive and willing to share their thoughts, knowing that a culture of care surrounds them. This allows them to take learning risks, reassured that their efforts will always be acknowledged. There’s also an atmosphere of productive ‘busy-ness’; we attend to tasks until they are completely finished, which gives children the satisfaction of a task well done.

What’s your personal educational ethos?

I believe learning shouldn’t be rushed. There are milestones to reach, and children need to be guided along a clearly defined path with highly visible signage to make sure they reach their end destination. They also need to experience life in the real world, not via a sanitised version behind screens. That’s why we limit screen time, ban smartphones and social media and protect young children from any devices that numb their sensitivity, awareness and alertness to the

How do you balance your extra-curricular activities with the academic side?

Our extended school day (from 8am to 4pm) ensures that we offer an effective, balanced timetable. This is complemented by a diverse after-school club programme from 4pm to 5pm, followed by our Stay and Play wraparound care until 6pm. The academic side is at the core of our learning: we always teach English and maths in the morning, carefully tracking our learning targets in these areas. Extra-curricular activities are interwoven into the timetable, allowing dance, drama and music to inhabit secure positions. We also make time for football,

to test a child’s potential beyond their cognitive ability; (16+) at least seven GCSEs at grades 9-6, including English language and maths. Places are occasionally available at other stages – contact the admissions team for more details Destination universities:

How do you look after the wellbeing of your pupils?

We’re a listening school and aim to be nonreactionary in our responses to what comes our way. The children acknowledge the ‘kindly leadership’ of the teachers, expressing how secure they feel. They know that their teachers are there to listen and will always be ready with an authentic response to their queries. At Ivy House, everyone matters: all children get speaking parts in plays, for example. This approach permeates all areas of school life. MULTILINGUAL MAGIC

Research found that, across many sectors of employment, a second language isn’t desirable; it’s essential
Learning languages broadens children’s horizons while also opening doors to work and study. Here’s how to help your child become a linguist

The number of students studying foreign languages has nosedived in the state sector since 2004, when the government dropped the requirement to take a language at GCSE. But according to Oliver Hopwood, chair of The Independent Schools’ Modern Languages Association (ISMLA), language learning remains “pretty buoyant” in many independent settings. “We’re fortunate in that parents often see the ability to communicate with different people as a good thing,” he says. “Depending on the size of the school, you’re also likely to find more languages on offer – Mandarin, some Russian, and some lessertaught languages like Italian, Japanese and Arabic.”

Oliver can wax lyrical about the many benefits of studying languages because he’s experienced them firsthand. “As a teenager, I loved the access it gave me to the world beyond my immediate horizons,” he says. “Learning a language changes how you think about yourself and others and builds confidence in areas beyond your comfort zone. And the higher up in education you go, the more other subjects it touches upon, like history, politics and literature.”

Then there are the doors it opens at university and beyond. Between 2020 and 2022, Oxford University offered places to 45 per cent of applicants for its modern language courses, compared with under 6 per cent for computer science and under 9 per cent for economics and management. And research by the University of Portsmouth found that, across many sectors of employment, a second language isn’t desirable; it’s essential.

So, how can parents cultivate a love of language learning in their child, and find a school that will help it to flower? Oliver has these dos and don’ts.

Do:

• Foster curiosity about the languages being used around where you live

• When you’re abroad, encourage children to say the little things, like hello, please and thank you. It’ll normalise the experience and show them that people appreciate their efforts

• Role-model being a voracious consumer of

language of all kinds. Expose your child to as broad a range of words, in as broad a context, as possible. And encourage curiosity about the ways we use language, including English, when we speak, write and read.

Don’t:

• Go with a shopping list of languages you think your child should learn. If they don’t like your choice, they aren’t going to learn it

• Choose schools based on which languages they offer, or how many. Instead, look at how they teach them, and the experience pupils have. Are the teachers positive, or do they say, “Learn this or you won’t get a job?” How do they present the subject to its fullest value, both in and beyond the classroom? And do they make good use of the exciting technology available to support language learning? Do they tap into the rich supply of authentic language available on free and paidfor platforms, for example, or use technology for virtual language exchanges? ismla.co.uk

Language learning in focus

Jesse Elzinga, headmaster of Sevenoaks School, is justifiably proud of language provision at the school. Of its 1,200 pupils, 600 are studying French or Spanish, 200 Mandarin, 160 German and 100 Russian.

“We’re unique in that our students study languages until they’re 18, as part of the International Baccalaureate (IB),” he says. “We have 76 different nationalities in the school, so our large modern languages department has trilingual and bilingual students, as well as beginner learners. Many of our staff are native speakers who offer regular conversation lessons

and accompany children on our numerous trips, plus language clubs and debating clubs.”

To assess the quality of provision at a non-IB school, Jesse suggests looking at the numbers of students who choose to study a language at A level.

“If they’re taught in an inspiring way, with great teachers and a strong department, they’ll want to keep going,” he says.

Like Oliver, though, he advises against pushing or nagging a child. “As children get older, you have to persuade them of the value of doing something. So, explain why it’s important to study a language and what they’ll gain.”

BEYOND EXAMS

New research by The King Alfred School highlights the problems with the current exam-focused assessment system

The number of voices questioning the dominance of timed, written assessments is growing. In the current system, students could arrive at university having aced every exam they’ve been set, but with no experience of the skills needed to work in a group or of presenting their ideas. The King Alfred School believes young people need to be prepared for the rich variety of tasks on which their degrees will be judged, and which more accurately reflect what they will face in the workplace.

The school recently commissioned some research, along with Rethinking Assessment, which shows universities are making ever more use of multi-modal assessments. Of the 240 undergraduate degrees the research looked at, not one used exam-only assessments. Instead, they employ a mix of ‘non-traditional’ methods including group work, creative projects and industry-related assignments, alongside exams.

This is why the school has begun to offer their own accredited courses, which feature a wider range of assessment methods. They know that they are not alone in taking this step because there was standing room only in a breakout session about School Directed Courses at the recent Next Generation Assessment conference. Delegates were supportive of a change that would mean students being assessed on a wider range of subject-specific, practical, and technical skills and not having their abilities reduced to a series of letters or numbers.

At The King Alfred School they’ve developed a GCSE equivalent course called Global Challenges, which introduces students to big socio-economic, environmental, and ethical challenges facing the world, and allows them to develop their own social impact projects. The project-based nature of the course gives them a real-world learning experience and the opportunity to build relevant skills, as well as giving them an accredited ‘Higher Project Qualification’ and a Junior Research Fellowship certificate.

Looking at how schools teach and assess students is just one part of the puzzle. Schools need to look at what they record as achievements for our young people too. They need to evidence skills like creativity, spoken communication and collaboration in student learner profiles which provide a much fuller picture of what the student is like as a learner. Core skills and knowledge are vital, but they are only one element of the toolkit needed to move from school into Higher Education, where the assessments are far more diverse.

The King Alfred School is committed to holistic skills development and hope this research will help others to build these skills into the educational experience earlier.

Adventures in renting

From strategic timing to flexibility, our property experts reveal key strategies for thriving in London’s competitive rental market

Navigating London’s rental market with its shifting currents can feel both daunting and dynamic. If you’re looking to find your perfect pad, adapting your strategies to the ebb and flow of market conditions is not just advisable; it’s essential. Arron Bart from Aston Chase paints a picture of a rental market that’s still feeling the aftermath of the pandemic, with increased competition particularly evident in Prime central London. Indeed, lockdown caused many to renew tenancies long-term, rather than seek new residences, squeezing available stock and driving up competition.

Aaron’s advice for renters is pragmatic: “A tenant needs to be realistic in their expectations,” he says. “With dwindling stock numbers, often tenants are not going to get everything on their

Tenants need to know what they’re willing to compromise on, and what they are willing to pay
Arron Bart, Aston Chase

wish list, so working out what’s negotiable early on is important. With many negotiations entering best bid scenarios, tenants need to know what they’re willing to compromise on, and what they are willing to pay, because there’s no point missing out on something you love for a relatively small amount and later regretting it. Competitive bidding is a tough business. Often at the end of a best bid scenario, further offers aren’t considered, so put your best foot forward and be sure to understand what it is the landlord is looking for to make your offer the most attractive.”

Marielle Papadopoullos, head of lettings at Savills’ Hampstead branch, echoes the sentiment of competitive readiness but focuses on the seasonal fluxes that influence the market

dynamics. She suggests: “The seasonal shift of spring and summer brings a wave of rental activity, and so to stand out in a more competitive market, I’d suggest that tenants put themselves in the most attractive position possible. Understanding what the landlord is after, by way of a tenant profile, contract length, and a move in date, could help give you a competitive edge and secure the property, particularly if there are multiple interested parties.”

Marielle also emphasises the importance of flexibility in tenant expectations. She says: “It’s also important to have an open mind when it comes to renting. I would always advise that tenants have a few non-negotiables and then be prepared to be flexible outside of those ‘must have’ parameters. Doing this will help tenants rule in, or rule out properties and be ready to put in an offer.”

Glentree’s Josh Sagal highlights the resurgence of the north west London rental market, and his tips are geared towards preparation and agility: “If you’re actively seeking a rental property, best prepare yourself to guarantee you’re in the strongest position,” he suggests. “And stay in touch with the agents. In a competitive market the best properties will be rented off-market regularly, so check in with agents to see what’s available offline so you don’t miss out. Give yourself as much time as you can by starting early, know what you can afford when offering on a property, have all the required documents to hand so as not to cause delay, and finally, be available – and be quick!”

The key takeaway from the experts, then? A blend of preparedness, prompt action, and practical expectations. Look lively! astonchase.com; savills.co.uk; glentree.co.uk

LET US TAKE CHARGE

TK International’s Laine Berry heads up the company’s management service, she tells us what’s on offer for landlords and comments on the outlook for the lettings market

I head up TK International’s management department, working alongside the lettings team. Many domestic and non-resident landlords, looking to optimise the potential that their property holds, are opting for our fully managed service. We oversee the property in a complete capacity, and cater for both long and short term lets, giving our clients total peace of mind. We also offer a rent collection service which allows us to collect the rent from the tenant, without overseeing the tenancy whilst it is ongoing.

The government continuously introduces new legislation for landlords, so it is vital to be fully compliant with the latest requirements; our department always has a finger on the pulse where this is concerned, enabling us to implement changes immediately. Because of this, we’re seeing more and more landlords upgrading to our fully managed service.

We provide a top tier, completely hands-on approach. Attention to detail is key, and we offer a number of added services, such as an out of hours team, an end of tenancy

checklist for tenants, and full integration of checks for landlords. The rule that we adopt is that every landlord should have full peace of mind with every department at TK International, and within that we strive to ensure that the management department provides truly standout service. As with all departments within the residential real estate industry, the current problem is lack of stock versus surprisingly high demand. When there are fluctuations in the mortgage market, buyers are understandably cautious about making long term financial commitments, and they often decide to wait out the uncertainty while renting. This adds extra pressure on landlords to make sure that their properties are in the best condition to attract and retain tenants. We believe this will be the case for the foreseeable future. Current hotspots continue to be NW3, NW8, W1, W5 and SW3.

To discuss your management needs, contact the department on 020 7794 8700, or email lettings@t-k.co.uk (t-k.co.uk)
