WHERE THE ART IS

June brings with it one of the events we’ve been most looking forward to in 2018. No, we’re not talking about Father’s Day (though you will find some gorgeous gift ideas in our interiors section), this month sees the opening of the V&A’s hotly anticipated Frida Kahlo exhibition. Inspired by that, our Lust List honours her inimitable style, and we’ve had a bit of a Latin American fashion moment on our style pages, too. Another artist who piqued our interest this month is Josh Whitehouse, who you might recognise from his part in Poldark (Hugh of the naughty dalliance with Demelza). We had a fascinating chat with him about the new series, which starts this month, and the creative ways he fills his non-acting days – read all about it in the interview. All this, plus a guide to building your dream kit house and tips for starting your antiques collection – more than enough to keep you busy until next month…

A STORMY AFFAIR Family law partner Lisa Pepper looks at adultery v unreasonable behaviour as grounds for divorce through the lens of the turbulent Trump marriage

Since the story first broke in The Wall Street Journal in January 2018, the case of Stormy Daniels and Donald Trump has remained headline news across the world. While the mire that is Donald Trump’s personal life swirls around television channels and swells internet click bait, very little is written about the other person in this triangle – Trump’s wife Melania, who had given birth to their son just months before Trump embarked on the affair with Daniels. While rumours of marital disharmony abound, we have to wonder: what happens if Melania and Trump divorce? Let’s consider this hypothetical question using UK law as a background. The grounds for divorce In England and Wales, there is only one legal ground for divorce: irretrievable breakdown of the marriage. In a Divorce Petition, the person instigating the divorce, the ‘Petitioner’, must cite one of five facts that led to the breakdown. These are: Adultery Unreasonable behaviour Desertion Two years of separation with the consent of the Respondent Five years of separation with no consent required.

Divorce on fact of adultery – time limits For our hypothetical scenario, if Melania wished to claim divorce in the UK on the basis of adultery alone, two facts must be proven: first, that Trump had intercourse with Daniels and second, that Melania now finds living with Trump intolerable. However, here’s the rub: Melania would have to file for divorce within six months of finding out about the affair, otherwise under the current UK law, she will be deemed to have condoned the adulterous act. This six month target places a time pressure on her ability to claim divorce purely on the grounds of adultery. However, there is an alternative way of securing a divorce in the UK, without having to keep an eye on the clock – unreasonable behaviour. Divorce on fact of unreasonable behaviour Unreasonable behaviour is often cited in Divorce Petitions here and would enable Melania to start pursing divorce immediately. Most cases proceed on this basis, with the Respondent perhaps putting on record that they don’t accept the behaviour allegations alleged, but stating that they do not wish to defend the divorce. Would Trump do that though? Or would he vigorously defend any allegations against him? Claiming unreasonable behaviour does not

always guarantee a smooth divorce – it depends on the cooperation of the other party. Owens v Owens: a courtroom battle Take as an example the 2017 case of Owens v Owens, which has been a battle over a divorce on the fact of unreasonable behaviour, fought through the Courts and which has now been referred up to the Supreme Court. What the Owens v Owens case highlights is the urgent need for Family Law reform and particularly for the establishment of a ‘no fault’ divorce in the UK. So, who knows, perhaps Melania will bite the bullet, making Trump the first President to be divorced while still holding office.

You can read a full summary of the Owens v Owens case at Osborneslaw.com For more information about grounds for divorce, contact Lisa Pepper on 020 7485 8811, lisa.pepper@osborneslaw.com Osborneslaw.com

Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up

6 Jun-7 Jul | Park Theatre Life as the nation’s most-loved TV chef may sound pretty perfect, but behind the dazzling career and the sparkling kitchen studio, is it all it’s cracked up to be? Janie Dee plays the lead role of Caroline Mortimer in this witty and sharp comedy from Torben Betts, and with Eastenders’ Charlie Brooks and Poldark’s Patrick Ryecart completing the line up, you know you’re in safe hands. See what happens when the studio lights go out and the cameras stop rolling. Monogamy will have you looking at Mary Berry in a very different light…

16 Jun-4 Nov | V&A She’s a feminist symbol, an iconic artist and instantly recognisable for those eyebrows, but above all, more than 60 years after her death, Frida Kahlo continues to captivate us with her artwork. And now, as the first exhibition outside of Mexico, the V&A has curated more than 200 of her personal items. From her eyebrow pencil still in its original packaging to those distinctive Tehuana garments, the exhibition explores the artist’s unmistakable appearance and style. Displayed alongside film, photography and her own artwork, Kahlo’s compelling life story is not to be missed. Cromwell Road, SW7 (020 7942 2000; vam.ac.uk) fabricmagazine.co.uk

ARCHITECTURE

London Festival of Architecture

1-30 June | Various locations The world’s largest annual architectural festival returns this month and with 400 events, tours, debates and installations laid out across the city, you’re sure to stumble across one or two. This year, it’s all about celebrating London’s ‘identity’ in a variety of ways that will appeal to everyone from the architecture buff to the design newbie. In one of the event highlights, architectural journalist Tom Ravenscroft will take you on a walking tour of the buildings that house our own identities – data centres – of which there are 58 in our city alone. Fascinating or terrifying?

LIFT 2018

Until 22 Jul | Various venues The biennial festival is back, and bounding into London with more than 15 bold and daring productions. With world-class artists hailing from everywhere from Ghana to Latvia, this summer’s line-up is as boundary pushing as ever. Whether you want to see what happens when 150 dancers and musicians fill the Tower of London’s West Moat, or watch performance artist Taylor Mac reinterpret US history in bawdy song, now’s your chance. We’re most intrigued by the outdoor spectacle that is Fly by Night, in which American artist Duke Riley will set 1,500 LED-lit trained pigeons into the sky above the River Thames – you won’t find that in the West End.

The Royal Parks has partnered up with Avni Dhanani, a qualified yoga practitioner specialising in Ashtanga and Vinyasa, to bring a series of fortnightly yoga sessions to the heart of Hyde Park. This flow yoga class will be made up of physical practice as well as meditation and breath work. Being able to practice yoga in this incredibly beautiful space in the heart of London will allow you to find the calm among busy city life. It will enable you to connect with nature and release any tension through a series of yoga poses aimed at increasing flexibility and building strength. No previous experience is required, just a willingness to connect with your breath and your body. Classes start from 4 June and cost £15 a session. Explaining his

With series four of Poldark imminent, actor Josh Whitehouse talks about the different ways he expresses his creativity Words Liz Skone James | Photography Jack Grange Fashion Kate Sinclair | Grooming Davide Barbieri

Can’t place the face? That wouldn’t come as a surprise to Josh Whitehouse. “I don’t get recognised at all; I think I just often look very different,” he explains. “And I am quite happy about that. I like being incognito!” Chances are you’ll know of him, though. Just last month he appeared as Liam, the lead role in the film Modern Life is Rubbish, but he is probably most recognisable as Hugh Armitage in the BBC’s adaptation of Winston Graham’s epic saga, Poldark, which returns for a fourth series this month. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg for this talented 28-year-old, who also plays in a band called More Like Trees, stars in the Mr Burberry advertising campaign and draws in his spare time. “At one point I was having a sort of crisis about what I could call myself, I think I came to the conclusion that artist kind of covered it,” he laughs. 42

fabricmagazine.co.uk

So how did it all come about? “Quite organically,” he assures me. At age 19 he moved to London to pursue his musical ambitions: “Music is my first love, I have always had it in my sights that I wanted to make music,” he explains. He was model scouted at a gig and ended up appearing in a campaign for Jack Wills, shot by Elaine Constantine. The photographer consequently invited him to take some dance lessons, with a view to appearing as an extra in a film she was making. “She must’ve seen something in me because she started testing out my acting skills and sending me to meet people. And she essentially trained me up to play one of the lead roles in Northern Soul.” Off the back of that job, Josh signed with United Agents and other roles started to come in. “It all happened quite naturally, although the process to me was one of the

most unnatural things in the whole world,” Josh admits. “It was all so new to me, and it was very difficult to get my head around how you learn lines, and how things are done. There were a lot of challenges…” The fact that he has never had any official acting training doesn’t seem to be holding Josh back, though. He was put forward for the Poldark role by Demelza herself: “I met Eleanor Tomlinson, when I was working on a film called Alleycats,” he explains. “I was playing her brother and we really got along. She liked what I did, and she put me forward for the role of Hugh Armitage.” Josh was excited by the opportunity to appear in such an established show, in what was to be his first proper television role. And the character appealed. Speaking previously of Hugh, he has said: “I really feel like I can

relate… he is into the arts and literature and is a genuine romantic. Hugh refers to himself as an artist and I, myself am an artist, and like Hugh I also write poetry and music and so his interests are things we genuinely share.” It quickly became apparent to Josh that his role was to be fairly pivotal, because as well as the arts, Hugh is also very much interested in Demelza. Indeed, series three ended with the pair sharing a steamy moment in the dunes. “I know that people don’t like it when Ross and Demelza are threatened,” he laughs. “But I was actually pleasantly surprised by the reaction I 44

fabricmagazine.co.uk

got from fans: I was expecting more hate mail! It is good that people were able to open their eyes to the possibility that Hugh is not such a bad guy. My aim with that character was to try to guide people to understand what he was going through, so that he didn’t come across as such a snake.” Those wondering whether there is a future for Demelza and Hugh will be disappointed. “I could only point people in the direction of the books if they want spoilers,” Josh tells me, adding that, “it is tricky for me to say too much about what happens to Hugh in this particular

season, apart from that he is struggling with some health issues. And a broken, wounded heart…” In contrast, Josh is on something of a high. Next up in terms of acting is a role he describes as: “probably the biggest thing I have ever done, film-wise.” He will be appearing in Rachel Goldenberg’s musical adaptation of the eighties film Valley Girl. “I play Randy. That was previously Nicolas Cage’s role, so I am very excited about that. And the fact that I have to fill those boots…” he tells me. The film is now in post-production, though there’s no official release date as yet. “These sorts of things can take such a long time to come out,” Josh explains. “But I feel like, for me, this has been a year of things culminating. Everything seems to be happening now. And that is a really nice feeling. I have just got my head in scripts at the moment, trying to find the next thing to get my teeth stuck into, I suppose.”

“I was always afraid that the big city would be too big for me, and that I wouldn't enjoy being here, but I have felt so at home in London”

That’s not to say that Josh is putting his feet up – he is seizing the opportunity to dedicate some time to his real passion project. “I spent a long time trying to be a musician in London and struggling to pay the rent,” he admits. “Now I see acting as my job. I mean, it is an amazing job to have, I love the process and I love being able to act in things when I get the chance. But since acting came in, music has sort of been sitting on the back burner a bit. It will always be what I come back to after work, though.” His band released their first album six or seven years ago, a sound Josh describes as

“flamenco acoustic drum and bass.” Recently they have been working on 12 tracks for a second album. “They are currently with a producer in LA. So yeah, I am really excited to be able to show that to people. We would hope to be able to get a single out by this summer – June or July – and then the full album, maybe towards August.” And, excitingly, the band also have a couple of gigs lined up, including a festival in Switzerland later this year. “I’m always worried that if I book a gig, I’ll get an acting job, but I have been biting the bullet a bit more this year, because we barely played at

all last year – and the band miss it and so do I,” Josh tells me. He’s also working on another very personal project with his brother Tim. Together they are establishing a retreat in Portugal, a sanctuary that will inspire creativity and a place for artists to connect. “Basically I live in a property in London called The Hub, which is a creative warehouse we set up,” he explains. “We kind of wanted to create a similar thing abroad. And so we have purchased a property in Portugal and we are calling it The Hide. We are trying to be out there as much as possible, refurbishing the house.” As idyllic as it sounds, The Hide will only ever be an escape for Josh, who will still spend the majority of his time right here in London. “People come here to work, and as somebody who likes to do their work, I like being in London,” he confirms. “I was always afraid that the big city would be too big for me, but I have felt so at home in London. I think it is because there is always so much going on. It is such a big place that you can go and do your own thing. And there are always options, and always a million people to meet. Whatever industry you are in or wherever it is that you are heading, you can tap into your network.” Something he is evidently very good at. Poldark returns to BBC1 later this month fabricmagazine.co.uk

Remodelage Want to know why French women don’t get fat despite all that wine, bread and chocolate? Parisian socialites will tell you that it’s down to Martine de Richeville, whose signature treatment, Remodelage, is designed to soften fat deposits – not just in the hypodermis, but in the deep fascia too – and enhance capillary circulation, resulting in a slimmer figure, less cellulite and a general release of tension. For Londoners keen to get in on the act, there’s just one place to try it – Belgravia’s exclusive women-only private members’ club, Grace, where Martine’s son Julien is in charge. I arrive late and flustered and Julien asks me to strip down to my underwear before giving an unflinching head to toe appraisal, decreeing that my thighs require the most attention, one in particular carrying a lot more fat than the other. He explains that the technique can feel uncomfortable and advises that I might want to take some arnica afterwards if I am prone to bruising. It’s fair to say I’m apprehensive. I lie down on my back and Julien gets started on my stomach, using a pinching figure of eight 46

motion. The sensation takes my breath away and for the first time since being in labour, I find myself putting my hypnobirthing breathing techniques into practice. At one point I remark to Julien that until this afternoon I had considered myself to have a high pain threshold. He laughs and tells me that he can confirm I do. I feel for the folk who don’t, I really do. An hour later he has worked over my entire body and boy can I feel it. He remarks that I may experience soreness tomorrow, and that I will remember him when I wake up in the morning (Julien, I can assure you I will never forget you). He is correct; I wake up feeling like I’ve overdone it at the gym. But as with that scenario, I also feel lighter and tighter than I have done in some time. A course of 10 treatments is recommended and I’m as excited to see what the results will be at the end as I am scared about my next appointment. I will keep reminding myself that there’s no gain without pain. LSJ 1st session £180, package of 10 sessions £1,600. Olivia Thorpe’s second beauty product has been a long time coming, but some things can’t be rushed… And we promise it was worth the wait. Her first product, the Vanderohe No.1 Face Serum, which launched last year, left our skin looking gorgeously glowing and feeling luxuriously hydrated. As well as becoming a staple in our make-up bags, it won multiple awards. This new product focuses on the body, and like the first, is formulated from the highest grade plant oils. While it is intensely moisturising, it is so much more than a mere body serum. The carefully blended oils smell exquisite – reminiscent of an English country garden – and the scent adapts and changes with the temperature of the skin. The perfect holiday hero, it will hydrate sun parched skin and replace heavy perfumes in the heat. After a few short days, we can’t imagine life without it… £108, 10 per cent of profits go to the Bumblebee Conservation Trust (net-a-porter.com; vanderohe.com)

HAIR TO HELP Hair loss affects over 8 million women in the UK. For these women, a good wig or hair piece can help to boost confidence and self-esteem. Daniel Galvin’s new service at Selfridges is on hand to offer the very best bespoke solutions What happens at an initial consultation? These are complimentary and last for approximately one hour. Client comfort is always our top priority, so the in-depth consultations are carried out in a private room at our exclusive Selfridges salon. We discuss and identify specific hair loss issues, before demonstrating the various solutions available. We are then able to choose a solution in line with the client’s lifestyle and desired results. How are your wigs made? For a custom made item, the process begins with us taking a hard mould of the head, or in the case of a hair piece, the area to be covered. On this template the parting, crown and hairline are drawn. A second template is made showing colour variations including highlights, darkened roots and balayage effects. A third template can be made over the top of these two, indicating variety of densities and hair direction. The design process is always done in collaboration with the client, taking into account how their hair may have once looked.

Hair loss affects over 8 million women in the UK, and over 40 per cent of women will experience it to some degree at some stage in their life. Thanks to a new and exclusive Bespoke Wig Service at Selfridges, the team at Daniel Galvin can now offer support. We spoke to Gary Price, Bespoke Wig Director, to find out more about what is on offer.

Can you tell us about yourself? As well as over 30 years of experience creating looks for celebrity clients, I have a background as an integrative psychotherapist. This unique combination means I am able to offer every client a welcoming, reassuring environment while discussing the very best options for their individual needs. What sort of people can you help? We help people with thinning hair or partial hair loss, as well as those who are suffering with complete hair loss. This includes those with Alopecia, Female Pattern Hair Loss and clients undergoing Chemotherapy. What are the advantages of choosing a bespoke wig? Bespoke wigs are made to measure to ensure a perfect fit and the design process enables the client and consultant to create a wig or hair piece in any colour, density, texture and curl pattern. This means that they are more comfortable to wear and virtually indistinguishable from real hair. They also last longer than most ready to wear options.

What do you do to ensure that your wigs look as natural as possible? To ensure that all of our wigs and hair enhancers look completely natural, every piece is crafted from high-quality human hair or the finest synthetic materials, all sourced and hand-picked by me. We take into account all ethnicities and hair textures and will cut, colour and style each hairpiece to ensure the most natural finish. To ensure that this finish lasts, we offer styling tips and maintenance advice. We also provide an in-house maintenance and conditioning service for real hair wigs. Some people worry that wearing a wig might slow down regrowth of hair, is there any truth in that? Absolutely none at all: wearing a wig or hair piece does not slow down the regrowth of natural hair. How long should a good wig last? On average a synthetic wig, worn daily, will need to be replaced every 3-4 months, a real hair wig piece every 8-10 months.

The Bespoke Wig Service is now available at the Daniel Galvin Salon in Selfridges – please quote ‘FABRIC’ when booking your appointment. Body Studio on 3, 400 Oxford Street, W1A (020 7318 3663; danielgalvin.com/bespoke-wig-service; @danielgalvinldn)

Osteoarthritis and tendon injury or damage (tendinopathy) are common culprits, and now these can be treated with Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy that takes advantage of your blood’s natural healing properties. WHAT EXACTLY IS PRP? Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy – also known as Autologous

HOW DOES IT WORK? PRP therapy uses a sample of the patient’s own blood, which is spun in a centrifuge to separate the different types of blood cells. The procedure extracts and concentrates the Platelet Rich Plasma, which is then injected straightaway into the injured area. It’s a simple outpatient procedure, which takes around 30 minutes. WHAT CONDITIONS IS PRP SUITABLE FOR? The principal aim of this treatment is to reduce pain, improve joint function and potentially slow, stop or even

repair damage to the surface (articular) cartilage. At Highgate Private Hospital, Consultant Orthopaedic Upper Limb Surgeon Mr Giuseppe Sforza uses PRP to treat a number of common orthopaedic conditions, including: Osteoarthritis in the shoulder, elbow, thumb and base of the thumb joints Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) Rotator cuff disease (inflammation or a tear in the muscles and tendons in your shoulder) Tendinopathy (using PRP with a collagen scaffold injection, which can prolong the healing effects).

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF PRP? Patients can see a significant

improvement in their symptoms, with reduced pain and improved mobility. This type of therapy may also eliminate the need for surgery or other more aggressive treatments. Highgate Private Hospital welcomes all patients, whether insured, NHS funded, or paying for their own treatment. If you are covered by private medical insurance, Highgate is approved by all the major medical insurers and for self-payers, the hospital has highly competitive, all-inclusive prices. WE LOVE: BLACK BEE HONEY While researchers have proven that eating honey doesn’t actually help to relieve hayfever symptoms, there’s still much to recommend a really delicious, locally made jar. Founded by Londoners Chris Barnes and Paul Webb, and named after the native British honey bee, Black Bee Honey produces premium honey sourced from the best British bee farms. Harvested straight from the honeycomb and left unprocessed – neither heated nor blended – the Black Bee honeys carry traces of the seasons, reflecting the weather and flora of the honey bees’ natural habitat. As a result, each jar is unique in flavour, hue and consistency. With a huge variety of plants and trees in the Capital’s parks and gardens, the single origin London Honey has a mind-blowing complexity of flavours and we can’t get enough of it. £8.95 for 250g, available from Whole Foods and various independent delis (blackbeehoney.co)

Café Hampstead “There’s an underwhelming array of restaurants in Hampstead,” laments the table of locals sat next to us. My ears prick up. The conversation turns to the difficulty of finding an independent restaurant in a sea of chains. The table of locals have high hopes that the recently opened Café Hampstead might be the answer, and now so do I. The pressure is on. In the heart of its namesake London village, this friendly neighbourhood brasserie takes inspiration from the café culture of Tel Aviv. It has the laid-back yet buzzy vibe you might expect of a

café: the chef calls orders from the open kitchen over a background babble of clattering tableware, chatter and unobtrusive jazz. The décor feels more like an upmarket bistro than a no-frills urban café though. Plush velvet booths the colour of crushed pine needles hug the walls (and are by far the best seats in the house). These green accents, alongside a smattering of botanic prints and actual plants, add a verdant touch to the otherwise cream, chrome and dark wood interiors. We sit in the airy garden room, where the conservatory’s glass ceilings make the most of the

evening light, and offer a peek of the neighbouring Rosslyn Hill Chapel. But enough about the setting. We are here for the seasonal, modern Middle-Eastern menu. More specifically, we are here for the hummus, which we scoop up eagerly with thick warm pittas when it arrives. This is followed by another small plate of smoky aubergine on a bed of creamy tahini. Our large plates arrive in the form of a tasty cauliflower ‘steak’ with charred asparagus, and a steaming Moroccan lentil stew covered with a layer of the crispy fried kale. The typical Israeli ingredients mean

there are plenty of veggie and vegan options, but carnivores have lots to get excited about too, from lamb cutlets to a (sizeable) chicken schnitzel. If you’re feeling brave come dessert, the tahini ice cream – yes, really – with hot caramel sauce is an experience in itself. As we leave, still in deep discussion about that ice cream, we walk past several chain restaurants on the same street. They are nowhere near as busy as Café Hampstead. Looks like it’s just as popular with the locals as it is with us. EV 48 Rosslyn Hill, NW3 (020 3931 9191; cafehampstead.co.uk) fabricmagazine.co.uk

GORGEOUS GROG There are few better places to toast summer’s arrival than Highgate’s newest craft brewery, Gorgeous. When Rob Laub bought The Bull in 2016 he started making beer on tap using do-it-yourself brewing apparatus, working alongside head brewer Reuben Moore. That went down so well with punters that during a recent renovation of the pub he created a five-barrel microbrewery on site, complete with a beautiful beer garden. Customers can take an informal tour of the space, watching the brewing process as it unfolds and supping samples. Eight unique beers are being produced, all of which can be enjoyed at The Bull, on tap or bottled, or fresh from the barrel at the brewery’s own bar, and there are plans afoot to sell them across the Capital, too. If you needed inspiration for Father’s Day, look no further. The Bull, 13 North Hill, N6 (gorgeousbrewery.com)

Fork to Fork Food Festival Exciting news for Kensal Rise residents: the charity food festival led by Wahaca co-founder and former MasterChef winner Thomasina Miers and Caravan co-founder Laura Harper-Hinton (and sponsored by our very own Winkworth) returns on 16 June. Now in its fourth year, the annual foodie bonanaza, held in the grounds of ARK Franklin Primary Academy, was set up to raise money towards the building and development of an open air classroom at the school. The first of its kind in the UK, through growing fresh fruit and vegetables for use in the school kitchen, it champions the benefits of outdoor learning in early child development. Findings will ultimately be used as a toolkit to help benefit other schools. Not only a worthy cause, the festival is also a brilliant day out for foodies – for just £3 a dish, festival goers will have the chance to try small plates from a stellar line up of some of London’s most loved restaurants (including The Ledbury, Vinoteca, Bone Daddies, Hix and Soho House – Chicken Shop). Beavertown and Camden Town breweries will be serving a range of craft beers, alongside a bar serving wine and spirits, kombucha from LA Brewery and coffee from Caravan Coffee Roasters. And little ones will be catered for with Cawston Press soft drinks and Lickalix healthy ice lollies. Entertainment comes in the form of live music and cooking demos, plus face painting, craft activities and storytelling for kids. Not to be missed. 12-6pm, ARK Franklin Primary Academy, Harvist Road, NW6. For information and to buy tickets, visit franklinforktofork.com/tickets

Think of Raymond Blanc’s Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and the cookery school will probably come to mind, but did you know that the hotel also runs courses in gardening? With a Japanese water garden, orchards, a 17th century pond and a two-acre kitchen garden that is organically run and registered with the Soil Association, the gardens are very much a part of the Le Manoir experience – perhaps as important as the cuisine. From half-day courses on growing micro herbs and edible flowers (including tips on pairing them with your food) to fun-filled sessions for kids with Henri le Worm, there’s something for every age and ability. We’re particularly excited about the Japanese garden course

Exploring 1,000-year-old Japanese garden traditions, the one-day session will teach participants how to juxtapose practical considerations with freedom of design expression in order to create truly unforgettable landscapes. After a walk around the hotel’s Japanese Tea Garden with Robert, there will be an opportunity to create a small ‘trayscape garden’ using gravel, small stones and plants. Our beautiful city is known for art and culture: highlights include the Uffizi Gallery, the Opera del Duomo Museum or Piazzale Michelangelo, which is one of the most romantic spots to admire the city at sunset. We always recommend visiting Boboli Gardens at the beautiful Pitti Palace; you will feel transported to the Tuscan hills. Palazzo Strozzi offers fascinating exhibitions throughout the year, and is also a must see. At the moment,

Dawn of a Nation shows Florence through the eyes of Guttuso, Fontana, Schifano and a number of other great artists. June is full of surprises in Florence, and the most unexpected is certainly the Calcio Storico – or historic football – which dates back 500 years. Every year, thousands of people from around the world come here to watch three special matches, which will this year be played on 8, 10 and 24 June. For Opera lovers,

SURF’S UP The Maldives’ diving credentials need no introduction, but it may come as a surprise to hear that those crystal clear waters also provide some of the world’s most special surfing spots. This summer, having discovered 24 secret surfing spots within the Baa Atoll and Noonu Atoll, Soneva have officially launched an exclusive surf programme. Designed to pioneer luxurious yet sustainable surfing – using eco-friendly surfboards, leashes, fins, rash guards, sunscreen and board wax – Soneva Surf will be offered at both Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani, and the resident yacht, Soneva in Aqua, will offer a surfing charter. As part of the programme, in an effort to encourage the younger generation to understand the power and vulnerability of their ocean home, Soneva will also be working with the local communities to provide equipment, opportunities and training for aspiring Maldivian surfers. June also brings the famous Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Festival to the Opera Theatre. The art and history of Florence are enough to keep you out all day, but the charms of the Hotel Savoy should entice you back every evening. Dinner at IRENE restaurant offers an opportunity to sample the delights of traditional Tuscan cuisine, cooked with authentic local ingredients and presented with a contemporary

Taking the waters With its unbeatable location and inimitable style, Bath’s Abbey Hotel provides the perfect base for exploring everything the historic city has to offer WO RDS LU CY CO L E S

Ah, Bath – the original rejuvenating escape from London life. This buttery stone paradise has always been the place to come, not just to ‘take the waters’, but for other restorative treatments such as elegant cream teas and a little light flirting along the Georgian terraces. But probably the most wonderful attribute of Bath compared to London is that while it was fashion incarnate in Jane Austen’s time; nowadays it’s not at all hip. What a relief. We stayed at the Abbey Hotel in North Parade – which is not lying when it says it’s in the heart of the city. It’s right in the centre of the action, but still peaceful due to its sweeping views of the River Avon and the Cotswolds beyond. The hotel is made up of three smart townhouses with welcoming, colourful and deeply comfortable interiors. It’s alive with its own history but hasn’t given in to chocolate-box cuteness. There is eyecatching modern art at every turn – some from the owner’s private collection and some by Bath university students. Both the restaurant and the bar are honeypots for visitors and locals alike – the whole place buzzes with happy souls of all ages. The Observer’s Jay Rayner declared the food at Allium Restaurant ‘worthy of a journey’ and I wouldn’t disagree. Jerusalem artichoke soup (always a pleasure to order as it’s so fiddly to make), followed by roasted cod with a lemon thyme sauce was incredibly

56

fabricmagazine.co.uk

cheering on a chilly evening. But my favourite corner of the hotel was ArtBar, a cocktail bar that manages to be both cosy and cool and that utterly mesmerises with its gin varieties (64). Look up from your cocktail for a minute to also drink in the installation of 500 vintage wine glasses hanging from the ceiling, like souvenirs of so many of the best parties ever. Our room was simple and sleek – one exposed wall of Bath stone with an original fireplace the only barely perceptible nods to olde worlde. A Tivoli radio, TV, iPad and waffle cotton robes – what more do you want in a place to crash after a day of hand-holding strolls? The eponymous Abbey could be seen, and indeed heard (in a good way – those Sunday chimes are so cleansing), from our luxurious bed, and we wanted to chase the sun away in the morning. But do prise yourself out of that perfect duvet’s clutches and explore. It’s a five-minute cobbled walk to the glorious Pump Rooms – where you’re encouraged to drink Champagne as well as tea at any time of the day. Then nip next door to the Roman Baths, so popular in every era that the steamy waters seem to blur the lines of history between emperors and empire line dresses. To actually immerse yourself in Bath’s natural spring waters, head to the contemporary Thermae Bath Spa and emerge a goddess. Then it’s just a quick hop back to the station and London – one and a half hours, and half a world away.

“Many London fairs have a strict vetting policy to ensure that every piece is genuine”

There’s no denying that buying art and antiques can be a daunting prospect for the novice collector, but once the bug hits and you’ve purchased your first few pieces to take home and cherish, it can be an utterly rewarding experience – and one that can lead to “a lifelong passion,” according to Mary. “A good collection is worth more than the sum of its parts,” she explains. “Whether you’re buying for investment or not, the most important thing is for it to work in your home and for you to love it.” So where does one begin? It seems a large-scale fair is as beginner-friendly as it gets, what with its easy access and wide variety, and certainly in eliminating any doubt surrounding rogue dealers. “A good tip for ensuring purchases are genuine is to buy at a respected and, importantly, ‘vetted’ fair,” says Mary. “Many London fairs, like Olympia, have a strict vetting policy to ensure that every piece is checked to be genuine and of sound quality. Another way to ensure authenticity is to buy from a dealer who is a member of one of the two key trade associations, BADA or LAPADA.” An element of open-mindedness is a must if you’re looking to pick up something specific for your home, otherwise you can come away both disappointed and empty-handed. Of course, the most satisfying finds are the ones you didn’t know you wanted but would have been royally pained to leave behind. “The whole idea is to get inspired,” agrees Mary. “The variety is extraordinary, from diamonds to dining tables, Picasso to porcelain. Be prepared to be surprised by the unusual; we sell antique medicine chests, sundials, telescopes and model aeroplanes... Having said that, it will help to arrive armed with measurements and photographs if you know you need a piece of furniture for a particular space.” Haggling can be as anxiety-inducing for the neophyte collector as tipping etiquette is to the less well travelled in foreign climes, so when it comes to the art of the haggle, what’s appropriate and what’s not? “It’s so important to build up relationships with dealers,” says Mary. “Pick their brains for their expertise and ask for their help when you’re looking for something specific. Dealers are used to a haggler, but it’s important not to insult them; be realistic with your offer and don’t be put off if they turn it down. The more a dealer knows and trusts you – and sees that you’re a genuine

collector likely to come back for more – the more likely they are to give you a good price.” While choosing furniture is largely a question of aesthetics and functionality, seasoned collectors will also be considering which pieces make the best investments. That perfectly fitting chest of drawers could also turn out to be a family heirloom, treasured for generations to come. But of course, as with any kind of investment, there are no guarantees in the art and antiques world. “The old adage ‘buy the best you can afford’ holds true,” advises Mary. “Look for the unusual, ensure it’s not heavily restored and any provenance will help its long-term value. Nineteenth century mahogany furniture is very well priced at the moment and it’s hard to imagine that it won’t rise in the future. The very best example of any genre is highly likely to retain its value and would usually increase.” You might be apprehensive to introduce antique pieces into an otherwise contemporary interior, but mixing old and new can work wonderfully, especially if you’re going for an eclectic look. “A classic piece like a Windsor chair has a sculptural quality that allows it to incorporate seamlessly into almost any space,” says Mary, “while 17th century old oak furniture with its rich, dark patina works with contemporary art and interiors. Late 18th century Sheraton furniture with its simple, classic design also goes beautifully with contemporary art, while a Regency rosewood sofa table or a 19th century console with lamps on will add elegance and light up dark spaces. If in doubt, dealers will often let you take a piece home and try it in a space.” The Art & Antiques Fair Olympia runs 20-27 June. Olympia London, Hammersmith Road, W14 (olympia-art-antiques.com)

A FA I R D E A L For both serious collectors and beginners, the smaller fair offers unrivalled opportunity. Antiques dealer Daniel Cotton explains how he came to set up London’s newest fair, and why it will appeal to both buyers and exhibitors

“I have been an antiques dealer for the last 15 years, dealing mainly in antique silver and gold objects. “Aside from online, I sell at various antiques fairs around the country. One that I regularly participate in is Adams Antiques Fair at the Royal Horticultural Halls in Victoria. It was at this fair about nine years ago that the organiser of The Little Chelsea Antiques Fair persuaded me to take a stand at their next fair that coming October. “Despite being disappointed that the fair in general was underwhelming – there were very few exhibitors and attendance was low (about 300 people over the two days) – I was pleased with how well I did, and immediately booked for the next fair the following March. “Sadly, in the January, the organisers contacted me to tell me they were cancelling the fair. Including me, they had only managed to sign 19 exhibitors (and two of those were being given complimentary stands). With overheads to pay it was just not viable for them to go ahead. “I was very disappointed and in a bid to save the show, I agreed to undertake its running. Immediately I set about promoting the event and attracting new

exhibitors. The gamble paid off and we welcomed 42 exhibitors and over 1,200 visitors at my first Little Chelsea. And we have gone from strength to strength – over the years the fair has always been full and regularly attracts around 2,000 visitors. “I was certainly very fortunate that the fair, which launched back in 1980, was one of London’s longest running, and had historically always been popular. Indeed, one of the charms of the fair, which I have always striven to maintain, is that it offers a huge range of antiques from jewellery, gold and silver; furniture, textiles and carpets; sculpture, china, porcelain and glass; to scientific instruments and novelty collectables. And prices start from just £40-50, ranging up to £40,000 with everything in between,

meaning there is something for everyone. Also, with a range of expert dealers, the fair has always been friendly and not intimidating for the visitors. “Additionally, as the only ‘mid priced’ major London antiques fair (meaning that the cost for exhibitors is kept relatively low) it is always popular with visitors, who know that exhibitors are able to offer fine quality antiques at more affordable prices. “Sadly, the council decided to close the Chelsea Old Town Hall down this year in order to undertake some renovations, and so the hunt was on for a new location. Step up the Kensington Town Hall on Hornton Street, located just off High Street Kensington and very close to High Street Kensington underground station.

“Excitingly, this is a much bigger venue, providing almost double the capacity and allowing me to accommodate almost 90 exhibitors, with the added advantage both for exhibitors and visitors of an underground car park immediately below the venue. And so The Kensington Antiques Fair is born. “In the tradition of the Little Chelsea Antiques Fair, it will offer a very broad range of dealers from around the United Kingdom and from overseas, including France and Belgium. And costs will be kept low for exhibitors and buyers alike. “It is true to say that when I first took over Little Chelsea Antiques Fair, which was always known as ‘the affordable antiques fair’, I have to confess I did not understand, or appreciate, just how important and popular this banner would prove to be. Indeed, these days, I believe it is more important than ever, with customers being much better informed about market prices thanks to the internet.” The fair runs from 15-17 October at Kensington Town Hall, Hornton Street, W8. Balinese dreams

A love of Far Eastern architecture and contemporary design is at the heart of this spectacular home, constructed by eco-build specialists Baufritz WO RDS KA R E N HE ANE Y

Opposite: the infinity pool in the hallway sets a serene mood This page, above: floor-to-celing windows bring the outside in Below: the eyecatching geometry of the rear elevation

Many of us bring home mementoes of holidays spent in far-flung places. Some of us might even use them as inspiration for an interior design scheme. But very few of us would be as bold as this family, whose stunning home takes its cues from the ‘tropical modern’ architecture of their favourite resorts in Bali and Thailand, From the front, the house is elegant and understated with ivory render and tall, narrow windows that allow light to flood in, but still protect the owners’ privacy. It blends in perfectly with the rest of the street – only the enigmatic glass cube over the front door hints at the dramatic interior. But from the back, this home is truly spectacular: cliffs of floor-to-ceiling glass, steeply pitched roofs, stepped balconies that shelter the terraces below. This is a house that is seamlessly connected to nature – it sits within a beautiful park-like garden with mature trees that provide shade and screen this cathedral of glass from the neighbours. Located in a leafy north London suburb, the house is a remarkable collaboration between the owners and Baufritz, a German company specialising in luxury, eco-friendly prefabricated constructions. The couple had first encountered

the company at Grand Designs Live, where they were impressed by the fact that the company not only offered a bespoke design service, but also used sustainable and environmentally friendly materials. A fixed-price and fixedtimescale construction added to its appeal. Intrigued, they visited the Baufritz factory in southern Germany and came away persuaded that this was the route they should pursue. Breathe Architecture in Cambridge was commissioned to design the house and director Peter Cox worked with the couple on the design from the start. Many of the design accents, such as the natural stone walls, infinity water features, internal courtyards and a bridge leading to the prayer room, were dictated by the owners. The couple also prompted some of the external design elements, such as slit windows and pillars at the entrance. Getting planning approval for the 5,640 sq ft two-storey house was a challenge, as the plot was in an area of ‘special located character’, but the fact that it was an eco-house proved very helpful. By contrast, the construction of the house was very straightforward. Once the plans were approved, the couple went to the Baufritz factory and fabricmagazine.co.uk

showroom in Germany and selected all the internal finishes, from floor tiles and bathroom suites, right down to the door handles. Then the walls were manufactured in Germany, transported to London on large trucks, and a team of German craftsmen put the house up and completed all of the interiors in about six months. And what fabulous interiors… The Balinese influence is evident from the moment you step into the hallway, where you are greeted by an infinity water feature, complete with floating flowers and Buddhist sculptures. It is a calm, meditative space that sets the mood for the rest of the house. Light floods through the ground floor, which is open plan so that the soothing greenery of the garden can be enjoyed from every room. Glass walls, etched with traditional Indonesian designs, divide the kitchen from the living areas without compromising light levels. There are playful touches, too – an aquarium in a recessed wall connects the kitchen to the living and dining areas. A dramatic half-turn staircase leads to the upper floor and to one of the property’s most intriguing features: a prayer room. It sits in the cube that protrudes over the front door and is connected to the rest of the house by a glass bridge. Skylights in the ceiling create a mystical play of light in this serene space. There are five bedrooms, each with its own ‘bathing oasis’. The master bedroom has its own dressing room and gallery, accessed via a staircase. And whilst everything about this serene house is conducive to relaxation and contemplation, there’s space to get physical, too. Right up under the roof, there is a gym with an adjacent studio that’s the perfect warm down or chill out space. The décor throughout is elegantly minimalist, employing neutral tones with judicious use of accent colour. Furniture is eclectic and contemporary, but Far Eastern elements – images of wall carvings, ethnic patterned fabrics (all sourced by the couple themselves) unify the scheme. Above all, the views of lush foliage and verdant lawns from the floor-to-ceiling windows intensify the feeling that the house is sitting pretty in the Balinese jungle, rather than a north London suburb. This house is as practical as it is beautiful. It’s a masterpiece of intelligent design, with very high levels of insulation, triple-glazed windows, rainwater harvesting and solar water heating. Being air tight, it has a fresh air replenishment system, and all materials used are entirely natural and completely free of toxic compounds. Baufritz define their unique approach to construction as the coming together of “aesthetics, design and ecology”. It’s a powerful concept, and one that is beautifully brought to life in this harmonious family space. For more on Baufritz, see baufritz.com or call 01223 235632

LUXURY LIVING I N T H E C A P I TA L The Birchwood in leafy W5 is a masterful blend of design, technology and sophistication

The Birchwood, a pioneering project from Fusion, takes levels of luxury to new heights in the “Queen of the Suburbs”. Enjoying an elevated position in Park View Road, Ealing’s premier residential street, The Birchwood is set to become one of the Capital’s most prestigious addresses. This majestic building, which takes its design cues from the Georgian era, is reminiscent of an English country house. Behind the majestic façade are six sumptuous concierge-serviced apartments set within landscaped gardens planted

with birch trees. These triple aspect three- and four-bedroomed apartments push the boundaries in terms of exquisite finish, attention to detail and specification. Soothing neutral shades of white and grey abound in the elegant interiors, which are filled with light thanks to generous windows and reflective surfaces in the hallways and corridors. The kitchens are simply stunning, with sleek cabinets, marble-clad island units and work surfaces. In the living areas, delicate colour accents and textures complement

the neutral colour scheme, while objets d’art and wall art add character; bathrooms are a sophisticated marriage of heritage and contemporary styling. Wooden flooring throughout unifies the indoor space, while wraparound terraces connect the apartments to the outdoor spaces and are perfect for entertaining or simply relaxing. The jewel in the crown of this spectacular development is The Penthouse, with panoramic, 360 degree views across London to The Shard and beyond. Meanwhile, the 2,500 sq ft four-bedroom garden apartment boasts a sensational courtyard garden. The development’s amenities are no less impressive: gated underground parking, state-of-theart security features and private concierge facilities, including a cool store for grocery deliveries. The greenest of boroughs, Ealing also offers excellent road and rail connections. London Heathrow and Denham private airfield are mere 20 minutes away, and with the launch of Crossrail later this year, travel time from Ealing to Bond Street will be just 11 minutes.

AREA GUIDES

Kensington & Holland Park Though Holland House, the rambling Jacobean mansion that gave its name to the area, was bombed in 1940, the surrounding streets of grand double-fronted stucco houses remained relatively untouched, and are now amongst London’s most sought-after addresses (though the jauntily-coloured terraces, red brick Arts and Crafts houses and cobbled mews here give them a good run for their money – Holland Park is an architect’s dream). At the heart of the neighbourhood, the house’s 54 acres of grounds are now parkland… a glorious mix of woodland and formal gardens, complete with an orangery, Japanese gardens, tennis courts, a giant chess set and freely-wandering peacocks, while the remains of the house form the backdrop for the Holland Park Theatre, the home of Opera Holland Park. Add to that a mix of fashionable bars and restaurants and independently owned shops, and it’s easy to see why the area has a reputation as one of London’s most desirable and stylish places to live PH OTOGR A P H Y KAT H Y ANNE LIM

Street hearts Kensington Church Walk One of our favourite hidden spots in the Capital, this pretty little lane takes you by St. Mary Abbots Gardens, behind St. Mary Abbots Church, and up a narrow passage lined with quirky boutiques

Royal Crescent Inspired by its namesake in Bath, this curved crescent of Grade II listed terraced homes overlooks beautiful communal gardens. The highly desirable four storey, stucco-fronted properties boast striking porticoed entrances

Holland Park Mews This quaint cobbled street, entered via a stately stucco archway, has serious wow factor. Each of the wisteria-clad mews houses is accessed via an ironwork-balustraded staircase, which leads up to the main entrance on the first floor

Did you know? In the mid nineteenth century, the artist Frederic Leighton commissioned George Aitcheson, to build him a showpiece house in Holland Park. A work of art in itself, when the house was completed, Leighton filled it with classical treasures from all over the world, as well as a fascinating display of his own works and those of his contemporaries. Perhaps most notable is the extraordinary Arab Hall with its golden dome, intricate mosaics and walls lined with beautiful Islamic tiles. The house is now a museum, open to the public.

to the outdoor opera there in the summer. The Belvedere, which stands in the middle of the park, has also become a favourite for lunch. It is delicious, chic and boasts the most beautiful surrounds. For a brusquer walk I march around the Round Pond in Kensington Gardens. It seems often to be windy there, making it the perfect setting for the model sail boats and beautiful swans that glide serenely along the water. On the way home I like to buy flowers from John & Jessie on Kensington Church Street; this brother and sister team make the most wonderful arrangements. At the moment Jessie is making me a wreath of flowers for my daughter to wear for her First Holy Communion. I have four children and she is my second and last daughter. We have dried and kept the wreath Jessie made for my eldest daughter’s communion five years ago. Should my sons ever need a floral buttonhole I will know where to go. It’s not exactly in the neighbourhood, but I get my hair done by Paul Edmonds in Knightsbridge. He’s great and has sorted out loads of dodgy looks I’ve had after films. I like a pre-dinner drink at The Windsor Castle, though I don’t usually have the time. The pub is very nostalgic for me, as it is where I had my first drinks when I was a teenager and still living in our old house just off the top of Campden Hill.

Having spent all the years of her childhood in the same house in Kensington, with her two sisters and her parents, it goes without saying that the actress has an intense tenderness for the area Breakfast at Clarke’s, now on Kensington Church Street, has been a special treat since Sally first opened it when I was about 10. It is so smart but not at all ostentatious, like the best of the area. When Paul Thomas Anderson came to London he asked me to have breakfast with him there; I knew it was good luck that it should be somewhere so warmly familiar. I was right because it was at that breakfast that he offered me a part in Phantom Thread! Holland Park is a joy: my sisters and I played there with our father when we were children and I still walk there often. I love going to the Japanese garden and admiring the peacocks, I was married in its Orangery, and I often go 72

From the agents... “Holland Park and Kensington offer a diverse mix of properties, from traditional period townhouses and mansion blocks, to high specification lateral new build apartments and modern conversions.” Johnny Fuller, Savills

“The Kyoto Garden in Holland Park has an incredibly tranquil atmosphere, although it’s just a stone’s throw from Kensington High Street. It’s a great place to escape from hectic London life or to wind down after an intense day in the office – and it’s free!” Ryan Goodwin, Benham and Reeves Residential Lettings “For me, there aren’t many better ways to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon than strolling down Kensington High Street with my wife and son. I love the vast array of fashionable shops and restaurants it has to offer, together with its eclectic and multicultural atmosphere.” Lee Platt, Goldschmidt & Howland

DANIEL GALVIN, W8 Psst… Don’t tell anyone, but you don’t always have to head to the West End to have your locks tamed. This elegant salon in a quiet street in Kensington has a very loyal following in the Royal Borough. Poppy St. John-Sitwell has been going here since it opened in 2015 and wouldn’t dream of going anywhere else. “It’s everything you’d expect from a Daniel Galvin salon in terms of on-trend cuts, colours and treatments. But it’s really relaxed and the staff are super friendly. I always get a warm welcome.” 67 Abingdon Road, W8 (020 3544 6535; danielgalvin.com)

THE WINDSOR CASTLE, W8 There’s no shortage of pubs in the Capital, but few are as charming as this one. The Windsor Castle in Kensington is a fantastic summer pub, both for drinking and eating. Locals rave about the food, the ambience and the service – Bective’s Sophie Taleghani gives it a glowing review: “The Windsor Castle is tucked away on a leafy street in Campden Hill, with a lovely large courtyard and traditional panelled interior that’s full of character. It’s one of my favourite spots to bring friends and family.” 114 Campden Hill Road, W8 (020 7243 8797; thewindsorcastlekensington.co.uk)

DISHOOM, W8 Inspired by the old Irani cafés in Bombay, the Dishoom restaurants have taken the London foodie scene by storm. The latest outpost in the old Barker’s building on Derry Street is a favourite haunt of Hamptons’ Mark Sommerville. “I often treat the sales and letting teams to breakfast there – the sausage and egg naan sandwiches are unbeatable. And dinner is spot on – the black daal and awesome mattar paneer are standout dishes. The décor, which harks back to 1940s Imperial India, is amazing too.” 4 Derry Street, W8 (020 7420 9325; dishoom.com)

Schools THOUGHT PIECE

Revision, the right way You might think that the only way you can help your children with exams is to tell them to revise. But according to Ed Richardson, director of education at Keystone Tutors, you can help your child to decide what, when, where and how to revise – and with whom. Here’s how to do it.

T HE S HOR T L I ST Kensington Park School Independent co-ed day and boarding school for pupils aged 11 to 18 years (020 7225 0577; kps.co.uk)

What: “Traffic lighting the curriculum will help

your child to decide which specific components of a topic to study. Get them to colour everything they’re comfortable with in green, everything that they’re not sure about in amber and everything they can’t remember at all in red. It’s worth tackling the things they’re less comfortable with first, but mixing in the greens can help to keep confidence high.” When: “Children start school early, so it’s worth encouraging them to revise early, too – not stay up late. Regular breaks are also important. Make sure they do something to get the blood flowing, like going for a walk.” Where: “Help your child to find somewhere to study that’s separate from their switching-off space. Work in the bedroom and they could be tempted to lie down or go on the computer.” Who: “Revising with others can work well, as children can teach and test each other. This needs careful monitoring, though!”

How: “First, your child needs to create a timetable

for everything they’re going to revise and by when. Then they need to decide technically how they’re going to do it. I’d suggest creating flash cards or placemats with trigger phrases, words and dates. You can then test them on the contents, or ask them to teach you. You can also help them to come up with acronyms and mnemonics. And of course, you can give them past papers from exam boards or galorepark.co.uk, and mark them afterwards. “Finally, it’s more important than ever that your child sleeps, eats and drinks properly. Managing distractions is vital too. I suggest you have a box where everyone puts their mobile phone at revision time – including you!” keystonetutors.co.uk

What was the rationale behind founding a new school? Our governors have a clear ambition that Kensington Park School should be the next great 11-18 co-educational school in central London. Members of the management team have worked in leading schools such as St. Paul’s School, St. Paul’s Girls’ School and Bancroft’s School. Our desire is to apply the best characteristics of these

76

schools in a smaller, more personalised environment. How will the school be different? Class sizes will be VERY small – year 7 science classes will have a maximum of 12 pupils. We’ll also offer a broad and innovative co-curricular package. This will include the staple diet of football, tennis and netball alongside things such as ice hockey and horse riding in Hyde Park.

What kind of atmosphere are you hoping to create? KPS will be the kind of environment where a pupil’s individual interests and achievements are encouraged and celebrated. Pupils will be known by all and respected for who they are. How will you look after the wellbeing of your pupils? With such small classes and tutor groups, individuals will always

be under the watchful eye of well-trained, supportive staff. Tutors will help pupils manage their schedules and make sure they don’t over-commit. Parents will be an important part of the school community too, and we want to work with them in the best interests of our pupils. THE

INTERIOR DESIGNER

JIMMIE KA R L S S O N JIMMIE MARTIN How did you get into interior design? All my life I’ve been into art, fashion, furniture and interiors. Then 18 years ago those interests merged into one business. It was never planned, but I really enjoy it. It’s like my hobby.

THOUGHT PIECE

Safe as houses No one wants to come home from holiday to a ransacked house. But with 62,000 residential burglaries in London between March 2017 and March 2018, security should be for life – not just for summer. Here’s how to protect your home when you’re home and away 1. Be a stickler for security. Houses without security are five times more likely to be burgled than ones with simple measures in place. Fit locks to your doors and windows, and use them every time you go out. (Or even when you’re home, but in the garden.) Then fit an intruder alarm system that’s NSI (National Security Inspectorate) approved. “A well installed intruder alarm is worth its weight in gold, particularly if it’s monitored,” says Dave Chester of Custom Controls, supplier of high-end security systems. 2. Make your home the least attractive to burglars on the road. “Fit your alarm somewhere prominent, so it’s obvious you’ve

got security,” says Dave. “And tuck cars away so they’re not obvious when you’re walking past.” Be careful where you leave keys inside the house, too – burglars can sometimes hook them through the letterbox. And pack anything away that burglars could possibly use to get into your house, such as ladders. 3. Buy a slice of Big Brother. Some high-end security systems are monitored 24/7. “If someone enters the garden, the team sees them on CCTV and can have a conversation with them,” explains Dave. “This stops the intruder well before they can get into the house.” 4. Fake it to make it. Lights that go on at night will make it look

like you’re at home. Some systems will also open and close your (electric) curtains. Others connect intercoms to mobiles, so people don’t know if you’re answering from inside the house or the south of France. And if you want to be really flash, some monitoring stations will open the gate for deliveries if you tell them in advance. “It’s like security on steroids, with a PA thrown in,” says Dave. 5. Befriend your neighbours. They can act as an early warning system – for example, telling you if they suspect someone is watching your house. (020 3012 0321; customcontrols.co.uk)

What can you offer clients that others can’t? Most interior designers want to play it quite safe. We always try to create something a little bit unexpected, without being too crazy. Even our beige interiors have something different about them, like a big pink rug or a crazy sculpture. What’s your design ethos? The most important thing for me is to create an environment where the client feels at home and happy. We’re also about imperfection – we’ve been like that since we started. Describe your dream project I’d love to do a really nice boutique hotel. You have so many different areas to play with – the lobby, the bar, the restaurant. Even the bedrooms can all be different. What advice would you give to someone looking for a designer? For me it’s very important that the relationship between the client and the designer is genuine and honest. Positivity generates positivity, too – so smile, be happy and understand each other. Jimmie Martin, 77 Kensington Church Street, W8 (020 7938 1852; jimmiemartin.com)

BOOKS AND MORTAR

Years in the business? 36 years in the industry and 21 in the Hampstead area.

A house named after one famous poet, lived in by another… what are the chances? Byron Cottage in Highgate was home to A. E. Housman from 1885 to 1905. It was here that he wrote most of the poems that make up his most famous work, A Shropshire Lad. Grade II* listed and with a Blue Plaque celebrating its famous former resident, the charming fivebedroom house boasts many period features and is set back from the road behind a delightful garden. Byron Cottage is on the market with Savills for £2.5 million (020 7472 5000; savills.com)

I love London because… of the diversity, both culturally and architecturally. First London home? A studio flat in Canonbury Square, Islington. If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… a barrister. Favourite London street? Bond Street.

A S K T H E AG E N T

Most memorable sale? A parcel of land and houses on behalf of a charitable institution in Highgate at £16.5 million. Favourite haunt? Regent’s Park – I love the peace and quiet, the surrounding architecture and the lake.

DAV I D S T E R N PA R K H E ATH

Happy anniversary Arlington celebrates 25 years as an agency this year. So how does Arlington founder Marc Schneiderman sum up the past quarter century? “Having left school at 15 and after two spells of employment with two different firms of estate agents I felt that I could run my own business,” he says. “So 25 years ago I established Arlington Residential. I’m proud that I have a wellrespected company and am grateful for the support and trust of clients past and present. I’m also very grateful for all the people who work at Arlington Residential, each of whom has contributed towards its success.” 84

Q. Is a garden office a worthwhile investment? A. With more people now working from home, a garden office adds another room without taking space away from the internal accommodation, especially a bedroom. In my view, a garden office will add around five per cent extra value to a home. Most garden offices fall under permitted development, so no planning permission required.

Favourite place to grab a coffee? Anywhere that’s nearby when it’s raining! What’s your hidden talent? Racing car driving. Period property or new-build? Both, as long as they are interesting and beautiful. Aliens attack – which London landmark/place would you save? My house.

HEAVENLY HADLEY WOOD | KNIGHTWOOD COURT, EN4 Surrounded by peaceful countryside, but within easy reach of the hustle and bustle of the Capital, Knightwood Court offers the very best of both worlds.
