E
llise Chappell is preparing to bid an emotional farewell to Poldark, which will draw to a close at the end of series five this summer. Getting the part of Morwenna Chynoweth in the BBC’s blockbuster adaptation of Winston Graham’s novels was, without question, a career defining moment for the actress. “It has had a huge impact… something I never even expected,” she tells me, enthusiastically, adding, “I have met some incredible people and I’ve done some amazing things. I mean doing a shoot for Fabric magazine – things like that. My God, this is really cool!” she grins. Even knowing little of the story, as a lover of historical drama and dressing up, the role was an irresistible one for Ellise, who tells me: “I just adore period drama, so that was one thing.” But the appeal was, she says, so much more than that. “Morwenna just seemed like an innocent, gentle, sweet character. But then to find that she goes on such a harrowing and turbulent journey was really, really exciting. As an actress it
was definitely a challenge. And I feel like I have gone on such a huge journey with her. I feel so incredibly lucky to have been given the opportunity to tell her story.” Lucky too, to have worked with such a fantastic team, she explains. “The main thing for me is that on set, all the cast, all the crew are just so amazing. And I honestly feel like I have walked away from it with friends for life. It really was like a family, and to have that community and that network was really cool.” She will, she says, miss each and every one of them. Along with that dramatic west country scenery, of course. “Cornwall is so spectacular…” she says, wistfully. “When the weather is good it is such a stunning place. But then when the weather is bad it feels really dramatic and powerful. Especially when you have got a scene that is high emotion, or when something really dramatic is happening.” From drama to comedy, Ellise will also be seen later this month in a supporting role in Yesterday,
written by Richard Curtis, directed by Danny Boyle, and starring Himesh Patel and Lily James. It is the story of a failing songwriter who gets hit by a bus during a power cut and wakes up to find he’s the only person who can remember The Beatles. It sounds completely bonkers, but, with Curtis and Boyle on board, it’s almost guaranteed to be a box office hit. And Ellise is convinced that it is going to be “delightful,” confirming that it was: “so much fun to work on.” So that’s Yesterday, but what about tomorrow? Where future projects are concerned, she says she has no firm ideas about what she’d like to be doing. “So much is being made and there are so many amazing projects. I’m getting all of these scripts and I love reading something and just thinking: oh my gosh! Yesterday I didn’t even know that this project existed, or that this idea had been formed…” she enthuses. “I am still learning, and I am still wanting to experience so much, so for me, at the moment, if a project comes through and it sounds interesting,

There would, of course, be dream propositions: “One of my favourite movies last year was Eighth Grade, written and directed by Bo Burnham,” Ellise reveals. “I enjoyed it so much and I would love to work with him. Also Greta Gerwig, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Wes Anderson – I love everything they do…” But ultimately she thinks that what is important for her is to feel challenged: “I really love how small you can be on screen. And how intimate it has to be. It is a doubleedged sword I suppose, because it is quite terrifying how the camera picks up everything, but at the same time that is thrilling, because you are constantly striving for something that is authentic, and for something that feels truthful. I am constantly trying to go out of my comfort zone,” she tells me. “I love that challenge of making myself feel vulnerable.” Perhaps something completely different, then? A stint in the West End? “When I did my training, I did a lot of theatre,” Ellise tells me, “I really love the stage. When

you go to see an amazing play that moves you, that live aspect of it, I just love that. That is why I wanted to do this in the first place, so that I could see that live physical effect. And be there with the actors. So yeah, I would totally love to do theatre again. Alongside TV and film,” she says. The arts scene in London is one of her favourite things about the Capital. “I love how accessible it is to go to the theatre here, or to go to a gallery. You can find really quite reasonably priced tickets, and you can go to most museums for free,” she nods. “It is something that I never really appreciated until quite recently when I have visited other cities and realised: oh my gosh, you have to pay £20 to go to a museum. But here you can go to a museum for free and spend an afternoon just learning something new, which is so cool.” Art, it transpires, would probably have been her plan B. “I loved art at school, especially drawing. I always feel like I would probably have done an art history degree or something. I don’t know what I would have done with it,
but I love art history and I find it so fascinating.” It is though, she confesses, hard to imagine not doing what she is doing now. Galleries and museums aside, Ellise isn’t all about the highbrow pursuits; her guilty pleasure is RuPaul’s Drag Race. “I watch so much mindless TV… I love RuPaul’s Drag Race. It is amazing: that and a jar of gherkins and I’m all set,” she laughs. “I guess that it is not really a guilty pleasure, because it is genuinely an inspiring programme. It makes me feel like I want to be creative, and I feel all pumped up because I just think that they are all so talented and amazing,” she reflects. What else does she do that’s just for her? “I love just seeing friends, being with my family. I am a bit of a history nerd, and I grew up in the countryside, so I like exploring National Trust places. A good day off is going to a stately home,” she laughs. “And I think self-care is really important, even if that just means going to the shop and treating myself to something that I find really delicious, like a punnet of raspberries. Or going for
a picnic and enjoying that sweet, sweet vitamin D on my skin!” Where does she head for a spot of al fresco lunch in the Capital? “One of the things I love about London is how green it is. When you visit other cities and you are away for a while, you start to realise how amazing and green London is. I love Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood, Waterlow Park – there are so many lovely spots for a picnic,” she grins. Having grown up in the countryside, Ellise is drawn to the leafy loveliness of north London: “I would love to live in north London, surrounded by greenery. It is so beautiful around there, it honestly feels like you are no longer in a big city. It takes a while to adjust to London if you have grown up in the countryside, because obviously the pace is different, and it is so built up. But I definitely call it home now. I just think that it is a really beautiful vibrant city: I love it.” We couldn’t agree more. Poldark returns to BBC One this summer. Yesterday will be in cinemas from 28 June

I
’ve a dressing table groaning under the weight of all the beauty toys and gadgets I’ve accumulated over the years, but I’ve never come across anything quite like the Cryoball. One of the hottest therapy trends right now involves plunging the body to almost dangerously sub-zero temperatures, all in the name of offering pain relief, improving muscle recovery, eliminating skin conditions, boosting the metabolic rate to assist weight loss… you name it, Cryotherapy probably does it. While I’m not brave enough to try the full experience, I do want some of those benefits, and this clever little ice ball promises to deliver (and comes endorsed by the likes of Victoria Beckham). Kept in the freezer in its drawstring bag, the surgical-grade stainless steel massage ball claims to depuff and tighten the skin instantly, and I can’t wait to try it (though I do have to wait 24 hours initially in order that it can reach freezing point). KALEIDO With picnic season upon us, we think we’ve found the ultimate pack-up. eing of Glaswegian descent, I was excited to learn that fine Scottish dining was finally coming to west London. Introduced to Notting Hill by dream team Jackson Boxer and Andrew Clarke, Orasay has its sights set on becoming both a neighbourhood stalwart and a destination restaurant. No mean feat. Named after an island in the Outer Hebrides, it feels somehow fitting that we visit the restaurant on a dark and rainy evening. Inside it is cosy and candle-lit; a palette of hand dyed linen, reclaimed antique French oak and limewashed walls have been chosen to reflect the simple approach to food, and the quality of the raw ingredients used. With that in mind, it is no surprise that the menu is small but thoughtfully curated, dominated by Hebridean seafood. While we peruse it we enjoy a chilled glass of Crémant de Limoux and a Paloma signature cocktail (I’m no grapefruit lover but mixed here with tequila it opens my eyes to new possibilities). For starters we order beef and tuna tartare, and wood-roasted langoustines. Both dishes are exquisitely fresh and beautifully presented. Next up, we can’t resist sharing the 60-day aged shorthorn rib chop; 850 grams of melt in the mouth beef joy, served with an anchovy hollandaise, ubiquitous fries on the side and some white sprouting broccoli and bitter leaves, with a delicious but seemingly simple Champagne and elderflower dressing that I know I will never be able to recreate at home. There are seven wines available on tap, so we take the recommendation of our friendly waitress and enjoy a glass of white with the starter and red with the main.

f you’re looking for a show-stopping dessert to impress guests this summer, this glorious confection from renowned food writer, stylist and broadcaster Rosie Birkett ought to do the trick. It comes from her new book, The Joyful Home Cook (HarperCollins, £20), which celebrates the possibilities and pleasures that homemade food can bring us when we take the time to seek out, prepare and cook good things to eat and share. Rosie says: “This juicy upsidedown cake is reminiscent of macaroons and Turkish delight, with rose water-laced clouds of whipped cream, baked summer fruit and almond and coconut sponge. Pairing tart gooseberries with raspberries gives it a sweet, sour and textural contrast with pockets of moist fruit keeping every mouthful interesting. The sponge can easily be made ahead and topped with the cream and flower petals just before serving.”

INGREDIENTS Butter, for greasing 50g flaked almonds 250g raspberries 250g gooseberries, washed and any little dry brown tails pinched off 100g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder pinch of fine salt 100g ground almonds 100g desiccated coconut 4 eggs 120g golden caster sugar 100ml whole milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tbsp olive oil rose petals or other edible flowers, to serve For the rose water cream 400ml double cream 1 tbsp golden caster sugar 3 tsp rose water

METHOD Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6, grease a round 22cm cake tin and line it with baking parchment. Scatter half the flaked almonds over the base of the cake tin, followed by the berries and the rest of the almonds. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt and ground almonds into a bowl, add the desiccated coconut and stir to combine. Put the eggs and sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment and whisk on medium speed for a few minutes until frothy, then whisk in the milk, vanilla extract and olive oil. Alternatively, use a bowl and an electric hand-held whisk. Fold the frothy egg mix into the dry ingredients to make a thick but wet batter. Pour this over the berries and bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes, until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the cake tin, then turn it out onto a plate, with the gooseberries on top. Using a balloon whisk and elbow grease, or very gingerly with a stand mixer, whip the cream with the caster sugar until it reaches soft, floppy peaks (keeping a close eye on it so that you don’t over-whip it). When it’s almost at the perfect soft consistency, add the rose water and mix it through. Pile the rose water cream on top of the cake and scatter with rose petals or other edible flowers.
When I feel down… I bake. Nothing makes me feel better than pulling a loaf or a pie out of the oven. My favourite London restaurant is… Hereford Road. It must be the most underrated restaurant in London. My ultimate London day consists of… walking from Broadway Market along Regent’s Canal, past Victoria Park, finishing off at Crate Brewery. ON THE ROAD With nine different provinces, South Africa is a vast destination offering more bucket-list experiences than you’d ever expect. And who better to guide you through them than the locals who live there? by Emily Adams
T
hink South Africa and you instantly conjure up images of safaris tracking down the Big Five, afternoons sipping on world-class wine and a vibrant nation with a deeply complex history. But in a country so vast, and with so many stories to tell, those stereotypes barely scratch the dusty surface of Table Mountain. In reality, the southern tip of Africa offers more than any traveller could hope to achieve in one visit. So where do you begin? Hugging the southern coast is the treasured Garden Route, a coastal drive where azure seas roll up against the mountains. It’s a great starting point for first-time visitors and it’s where we kick off our trip. Ensuring we won’t miss a thing, the Tourism Board have lined up 12 expert guides around the country to help us on our way. From a local graffiti curator in Cape Town to a marine biologist in Gansbaai, there’s a friendly face waiting to greet us at each stop along the route.
Cape Town
Touching down in Cape Town, after an 11-hour flight, we only need to wind our watches forward one hour. With such a small time difference, there’s no unwelcome jetlag to interfere with our travels and we waste no time in getting acquainted with one of the country’s three capital cities. South Africa may still be emerging from a challenging past, with water shortages and electricity restrictions a prevalent concern, but seeing the city from the skies with a helicopter tour around the coast I see a positive end to the story emerging. I can pick out the brightly
painted houses in Bo-Kaap, the bustling hub of activity at the marina and the surprising colony of African penguins at Boulders Beach. Landing back on solid ground, we meet our first local guide, artist Juma Mkwela, who hosts walking tours around the Woodstock area. He shows us vibrant murals adorning the walls and houses in each street. In the early stages, he explains, the locals opposed the idea, thinking art belonged in a gallery, not on their homes. Over time, they’ve taken art to the streets, where now you’ll find more than 100 pieces by local and international artists, brightening up Cape Town’s back roads. Afterwards, we head straight for the iconic Table Mountain, which frames the city, and sits beneath a table cloth of clouds. We visit in the afternoon as the temperature cools and are rewarded as a most breath-taking sunset seeps into the horizon. Within minutes of sundown, the city beams with light like someone has switched the generator back on.
Stellenbosch
From here, it’s time to hit the road. Cliché or not, you really can’t visit South Africa without stopping off at one of the many winelands. We meet local wine guru André Morgenthal in the prestigious wine region of Stellenbosch. Having worked in the industry for 30 years, what he doesn’t know about wine just isn’t worth knowing. With a swirling mix of continental and Mediterranean climates, he tells us that South Africa provides some of the world’s most nutrient-rich land. Each wine – and we get to taste a glass, or five – including the national grape Pinotage, may get shipped over to the UK, but it tastes best on a balmy summer’s day in the Western Cape.

Further along the coast, our road trip takes us to Gansbaai for an ocean safari. Africa summons thoughts of lions and leopards on dusty plains, rather than sharks and seals, but the life beneath the

ocean is just as rich and fascinating. On a Dyer Island cruise with Marine Dynamics and the Conservation Trust, we see great white sharks, thousands of cape fur seals, African penguins (four of which we help release back into the water) and humpback dolphins, too. In peak season there’s even a chance of spotting the Bryde’s and humpback whales. These regular ocean safaris don’t just give visitors the chance to see the wildlife up close, but it’s also a way to monitor, observe and protect the marine animals, just as game reserves protect wildlife on land.
Plettenberg Bay
Arriving in Plettenberg Bay, we’re treated to the sounds of the ocean, fresh seafood and expansive white sandy shores. But moments away from the coast, we arrive in a whole new world: Tsala Treetop Lodge, a paradise playground for adults where a web of villas on stilts peer out through the indigenous forest. Surprisingly, not a single leaf or tree trunk has been moved or chopped down in the process, but still it offers the height of luxury in an eco-friendly fashion. “The best thing to do in Tsala is nothing,” we’re advised as soon as we arrive. Instead, we simply listen to the morning birdsong
and the happy chatter of baboons swinging through the trees. Our villa features its own infinity plunge pool (unheated as a conscious environmental decision), glassfronted rooms and carefully considered architectural design to give a secluded home in the most exotic location.
Kariega Game Reserve, Kenton-on-Sea
When you stumble across pure paradise, it’s no easy task saying goodbye, but something tells me that the final stop of our road trip will be worth it. We drive to Kariega Game Reserve, near Kenton-onSea, in the Eastern Cape in search of that other Big Five. I’ve learned a lot from our local tour guides, but the locals here are a little wilder… and of the four-legged variety, too. Rhinos, hippos, buffalo, elephants and lions await and within minutes, giraffes
inquisitively crane their necks to check out their new neighbours. We stay at the Ukhozi Lodge, one of five luxury lodges on the reserve. The crescentshaped infinity pool gives panoramic views over the valley: it’s greener than I was expecting, but then again, I know by now that South Africa is full of surprises. Each morning and afternoon my fellow safari-goers and I head out for a game drive with our ranger Ben, who knows the 10,000 hectares like it’s his back garden. With his help we spot four of the Big Five – only the elusive leopard escaping us. We step outside the safety of our vehicle and into the Jurassic world for a bushwalk, where Ben guides us among giraffes, zebras and ostriches. The evening ends with a traditional boma dinner served under a canopy of stars and around a central fire with braai (barbecue-style) food. As we near the end of our safari experience I’ve collected countless memories, photos and stories, but there’s one more animal waiting to meet us. A baby elephant, just two months old, bounds out of the bushes towards us, flanked by mum and dad protectively watching over her. The rest of the herd graze peacefully, nonplussed by the group of people observing them. As the sun falls to meet the horizon, the sky glows pink and I look around, counting no less than 12 African elephants – multiple generations, all shapes and sizes. For once we make like the locals, put down our cameras and succumb to the moment, all in silent agreement that this is the most memorable, other-worldly experience we could have been given on our final day. the country Spectacularly indulgent, a stay at this Buckinghamshire gem will indulge all of your country house fantasies, but in the most selfless manner possible by Lucy Coles
D
uring my blissful Sunday massage at Hartwell House it strikes me that although I’m indulging myself quite spectacularly this weekend, I am also ‘putting something back’. You see, the hotel was donated to the National Trust in 2008, so all profits go to restoring it and other worthy country piles in need of TLC. It’s a minibreak with a dash of sustainability – so 2019! This is a proper country house hotel with impeccable staff. As you sweep up the drive towards the honey-stoned Georgian façade and step into the great hall, with its imposing portraits and huge fireplace, you feel you are arriving at your aristocratic aunt’s place. You attempt to drink your first cup of tea more
elegantly than usual as a result. But this isn’t a fusty place by any means. London is only an hour and a half away after all. An overheard coffee order of “skinny latte with half a shot of decaf ” was accepted and delivered without so much as a raised eyebrow; breakfast includes the ubiquitous avocado on sourdough (though bacon and eggs seem more appropriate somehow). Our pre-dinner drinks are expertly mixed in the oak-panelled bar, which, somewhat ironically, used to serve as a prayer room. Dinner is perfect fillet steak in the flickering candlelight of a John Soanesesque dining room. Bedrooms are sumptuous – much drapery, ornaments and art – with every comfort, from
coffee machine to flat screen and a piping hot rain shower in the bathroom. Downstairs, the Rococo-style morning room and library offer expansive views over the 90-acre estate – designed by a Capability Brown contemporary. It’s worth borrowing wellies to explore (especially if, like me, you arrive in cream ankle boots). A leisurely half hour stroll takes in the pavilions and monuments dotted around the park, including a pretty bridge over the lake – a piece of which was borrowed from the original Kew Bridge in the 19th century. Inside the house, you’ll want to eschew the lifts in favour of floating up and down the grand staircase, which is lined with rather startling carved wooden figures (if you look carefully, you’ll spot Margaret Thatcher and Winston Churchill in the line-up). Hartwell’s particular charm is that it is not such a huge country estate that you couldn’t at least imagine living here one day – joining a long line of illustrious inhabitants, from kings of England and France all the way through to the girls who boarded here when it was a finishing school up until the 1980s. Though hearing the complex story of renovations over the years, it feels best that the National Trust has taken it on. There has been a dwelling on this site for 1,000 years and with the passion of its current guardians, we can dare to hope it will still be here in another 1,000. This Royal College of Art graduate creates contemporary leather specimen sculptures. Meticulously hand-crafted and fused with organic materials such as clay and wood, her nature-inspired forms are endlessly fascinating. The Welsh-born designer-maker draws on the industrial architecture of a large urban regeneration project that caught her eye, as well as the work of renowned textile artist and printmaker Anni Albers. It’s little wonder her modern monochrome pieces offer intricate textures and bold forms, mimicking the architecture of the natural world. North Londoner Richard Evans is a furniture maker with a focus on simplifying pieces without compromising their functionality or playfulness. Richard works with steel, too, and has developed a technique for bending and shaping the material into beautiful forms. Ula Saniawa graduated with an MA in architecture from the London Met. W
ith her eponymous luxury home fragrance brand, Victoria Cator’s dwelling naturally smells divine, but this is not the only assault on the senses. The perfumer lives in a glorious five-bed house that sits pretty in one of London’s most sought after conservation areas, and it’s filled with opulent textures, bold prints and arresting artworks. The property, set over four floors, is formed from two original mews houses, and has seen various extensions over the years, “including some 1970s additions that would never be allowed today,” Victoria admits. She bought the house over three years ago and shares it with her two grown-up sons, “who come and go”, Victoria has implemented a complete makeover that saw the house sympathetically restored to be in fitting with the other Georgian houses on the road. “I fell in love with the cobbled street and the width of the property,” she says, and it’s clear that as a property purchaser, Victoria leads more with heart than head – a strategy that’s more than paid off here. “Often, it’s just a feeling,” she explains. “When I was looking for a house I really wanted a garden. Mine only has a terrace, but the overall vibe was so good I was willing to forgo a garden.” Indoors, scent is of utmost importance to Victoria, who uses her superior nose to match mood and ambience with

her carefully curated décor. “In the world of design, the ability to engage with the senses is crucial, and one’s sense of smell is no exception,” she says. “The use of scent in the living and working space enhances the décor and has a positive effect on how we feel.” Victoria’s olfactory moods change from woody to floral depending on the time of year and even time of day. She has a knack for matching colours and textures, too, with wallcoverings and upholstery often playfully paired: her forest green velvety walls echo the fabric of an antique armchair, while a corner sofa blends seamlessly with the red and white jacquard print wallpaper behind it. “It’s Lotus Palmette by Soane,” she confirms. Victoria describes her interiors style as “classical with a minimal twist”, but there’s a fair dose of English whimsy in there, too. However you label it, each room has undoubtedly been put together with a lot of thought. “There is sometimes the temptation to gild the lily, when actually a less is more approach achieves a much more inviting space,” she says. There are no gilded lilies here but rather cut flowers in their natural glory everywhere you turn, adding a splash of colour, yes, but also, fragrance. Is character important, too? Period features, a sense of history? “I love a bit of character,” Victioria confirms.

“Quite often you come across a property that’s actually devoid of any character or period features but, with clever design, you can create a space that reflects a sense of history, even in the most contemporary of spaces.” Victoria’s antiques collection features some very special furniture pieces from yesteryear: “I’ve been lucky to have had some pieces passed down from my family,” she says. “My favourite is a 19th century French backgammon table, which sits under the window in my sitting room. Everybody who walks into the room is drawn to it and immediately feels the urge to sit down and throw the dice!” Add to this Victoria’s eclectic mix of modern and classical artworks and you have character in abundance. “My favourite picture in the house is a painting by Vicente Puig, which reminds me of my parents and my childhood.” The perfumer has her favourite go-to brands for décor and her taste is to be admired. The likes of Claremont feature for their fabulous fabrics: “They’re timeless and their colour palette has a sense of bygone glamour,” she enthuses. “I also adore Soane for their style of classical simplicity. Their collection of wicker furniture and accessories, along with their wallpapers and fabrics, is second to none.” Victoria’s favourite spot in the house is her study, positioned quietly at the back of the property, and offering a dual functionality as both office and sitting room. “It makes for a very calm working environment,” she smiles. It is from here, no doubt, that she’s inspired to think up her next move for the brand: “I’m very excited about the launch of two new fragrances coming out this summer,” she says, “along with a range of diffusers and room sprays. GREAT EXPECTATIONS With a background in high-end property development, Paul Hopkins and his wife Jane knew exactly who to turn to when it came to creating their dream home

Paul and Jane Hopkins knew from day one that Octagon were the developer to build their dream home. As Managing Director of St James Developments – part of Berkeley Group PLC – Paul Hopkins was well aware of Octagon’s well-established reputation, delivering high specification homes in the most desirable locations. Paul comments, “I trusted Octagon from day one, as they share a similar ethos to my company, never compromising on attention to detail or specification. There is a true art to house building, engineering out complexity without losing quality, and Octagon deliver this like nobody else.” The Hopkinses spent a number of years searching for the perfect spot to build, eventually finding a 0.6-acre plot on one of Northwood’s premier residential roads. They already knew the estate well, having lived there for five years before temporarily moving away to downsize. Once grandchildren were on the scene they wanted the space to entertain, so upsizing was back on the cards.
Paul explains: “Our aim was to find the worst possible house on the best possible plot in the best road, to knock down the existing property and build a home to our exact specification. The plot we finally settled on was perfect, backing on to a bridle path and Ruislip Woods – we just needed the house to match.” Octagon’s Bespoke team began by showing the Hopkinses a number of their earlier projects, showcasing the quality of product delivered, and providing inspiration for their own bespoke home. Paul mentions: “One particular home in Virginia Water stood out to us, and by coincidence was the perfect dimensions to fit on our plot. It was a huge benefit to be able to walk around a home that near mimicked what we were building, giving a feeling of the sense of space and light that we would achieve in our new home; a particularly rare luxury for any new build property.” With planning submitted and approved, following the inclusion of a number of mature trees to mitigate the
loss of a large oak, work soon commenced on their 6,500 sq ft, three-storey, six bed/ six bath Bespoke home, with the project completed before Christmas 2018. Paul says: “We couldn’t be happier with the end result. Every element is exactly as we envisaged, from the exquisite stone detailing on the exterior, to the beautiful landscaping surrounding the home.” “If I had to pick a favourite room, it would be the master en suite. Hidden behind pocket doors leading from the generous master bedroom, the bathroom is a masterclass in the use of book-matched marble. A feature bath sits central to a quadruple length walk-in shower, whilst a substantial roof-light offers views of mature oak trees, providing a wonderful connection with the outdoors.” Small details make a huge impact, with coffered ceilings throughout the ground floor reception rooms creating a unique and visually interesting feature, while L-shaped glass partitions on each side of the dining room enhance the sense of openness and provide a practical barrier to prevent kitchen aromas travelling through the ground floor. Paul comments: “Natural light is hugely important to us, so we incorporated a window that sweeps the height of the home, overlooking the southfacing garden; the result is a
mesmerising column of light which greets us every morning.” The Hopkinses brought onboard interior design agency Killer5 from the very start of the project, meaning important details such as the placement of electrical sockets and lighting layouts were established before the first spade hit the soil. Paul adds: “Not only did this make the process smoother and more efficient, but it also meant that the total cost stayed close to the original estimate.” “Unlike other developers and industries where you see a basic model and know you need to spend considerably more for the added luxuries, at Octagon a premium brand specification is the starting point. We chose to spend extra on media equipment, integrated ceiling speakers and security, but crucial details, from the taps in the bathrooms to the kitchen appliances, were all high specification as standard.” Paul finishes: “Working for one of the most successful and detailed developers in the UK, it was inevitably going to be tough to really impress me, but Octagon did just that. Now we get to wake up in our dream home every day, and that never could have happened without Octagon.”

Don’t let the fact that there isn’t an actual park put you off – with the Heath and Primrose Hill both within easy jogging (or strolling) distance, there’s acres of green space virtually on the doorstep. And the wide, tree-lined streets feel a world away from central London – which is, incidentally, a mere three miles away. Beautifully situated indeed. Did you know? Around the start of the nineteenth century, the area was divided into nine leasehold estates, each containing a grand country house with a handful of lodges in its parkland. The biggest of these was the now infamous Belsize House. Terraces of houses were built north of England’s Lane in the mid-1820s, but development only began in earnest after 1850 when, one by one, the big houses were demolished and their grounds covered with detached or semidetached houses. Each development was named for the house it replaced, such as the Rosslyn Grove estate and the Hillfield estate, but the largest was the Belsize Park estate on the site of Belsize House, which ultimately gave its name to the entire suburb.

Victoria has these tips for parents feeling the prep school pressure: 1. Keep an open mind. There are so many schools to choose from. And sometimes, the one you aspire to for your child isn’t where they’ll flourish. 2. Look for evidence that a school will tailor the curriculum to your child’s individual needs. Ask how they deal with SEN children as well as gifted ones, and check out their teacher:child ratio. (Ours is 1:10.) 3. Work with the teachers to understand your child’s strengths and what they need to develop, so they’re well rounded when they take the assessment. 4. Be open with your child. Talk about what the assessment will involve and how they feel about it. Explain that it’s a chance to show off what they’ve learnt, not an exam. And emphasise that they’re choosing the school as much as it’s choosing them. 5. Don’t be tempted to hire a tutor. A good pre-prep will do what’s needed. Tutors also focus on the academic side, when assessments (and careers) are increasingly about ‘softer’ skills like critical thinking and creativity. 6. Stay calm! apping out your child’s education when they’re two years old may seem extreme. But according to Victoria Playford, head at The Mulberry House School, it’s increasingly common. “We place 100 per cent of our children in selective prep schools, including St Paul’s, UCS, North London Collegiate and Haberdashers’ Aske’s,” says Victoria. “As assessments for these schools become more competitive, we’ve seen parents become more anxious about getting their children in. So they’ve begun to plan earlier.” Part of that anxiety is because the prep school a child goes to will influence which senior school they attend. But for Sioban O’Connor, of Education Advisers, this shouldn’t be the only consideration. “The ‘right’ school will bring out the best in your child,” she says. “That means giving them the confidence to meet challenges head on, to try new things and to recognise that the sweetest successes are those we have to work for.”

P
ersonal development has become a key focus in education, with school reports detailing children’s social and emotional growth as well as their academic progress. Indeed, from September this year, Ofsted will change their inspection framework to include personal development as a standalone category. This focus begins in the Early Years at the independent co-ed school, North Bridge House. From parent-child mornings to lunch dates with the older Key Stage 1 children at the Pre-Prep, North Bridge House Nursery School pupils have a busy social calendar from the moment they join the Outstanding school in Hampstead. Building relationships is just the beginning of life at North Bridge House though, where the emphasis is very much on developing the whole child. “Children’s development is holistic, which means that

A child’s development is very much a personal journey: children develop at different rates and learn in different ways,
“particularly in the Early Years of education, when curiosity can often and more naturally be sparked outside the classroom,” explains Mrs McLelland. As such, outdoor learning, school trips and extra-curricular activities are fundamental to child development and academic progress at NBH Nursery. ome landlords are reluctant to rent to a tenant with a pet, usually because they’re concerned about damage or additional wear and tear. But those who are willing to consider it will find it opens up the market for their property considerably, ensuring it lets quickly and reducing void periods. We find most pet owners make excellent tenants and they tend to stay longer term. Tenants often move to particular areas – Hampstead, Highgate, Primrose Hill, Regent’s Park and even Kensington or Bayswater – because they’re close to parks and ideal for walking dogs. We find that 69 per cent of tenants living in these areas prefer a property where they can bring a pet, so refusing them dramatically reduces the number of enquiries a landlord will receive. Lets with pets have become increasingly popular now and we’re seeing many landlords coming round to the idea of allowing a pet.
