FROM THE EDITOR

A R I G H T R O YA L K N E E S - U P …

With mere days to go until the marriage of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle, we’re finding ourselves a little distracted, to say the least. While this particular royal wedding might not be gifting us with an extra bank holiday (hey, we have two of those this month anyway), it is still very much the talk of the town. So, in an effort to combine wedding watching with work, we’ve put together a special supplement celebrating all things marital. Whether you’re getting married, helping your offspring to plan their special day or throwing a big (non-wedding) party to celebrate the season, you’ll find all the inspiration you need right here. And even if you’re not hosting, you should still appreciate the advice on what to wear on the day and what to buy for the couple who seemingly have everything. All of that, plus the usual interiors inspiration and the very best homes on the market. Oh, how we spoil you…

London Nights

11 May-11 Nov Museum of London Spanning the late 19th century to the present day, London Nights takes visitors on a nocturnal tour of the city through the medium of photography. The exhibition is divided into three sections: London Illuminated: capturing moonlight, lowlight, streetlight; Dark Matters, tapping into the murkier, mysterious aspects of the Capital, and Switch On Switch Off, exploring London’s night owls at work, rest and play. London Nights, a book to accompany the exhibition, is published by Hoxton Mini Press, priced £19.95.

La Traviata

Tarka Kings: Still is Still Moving

18-27 May | Jacksons Lane “Boy meets girl. Boy’s father disapproves of girl. Girl is persuaded to quit the scene.” Verdi’s best-known opera is given a contemporary spin in this summer’s Hampstead Garden Opera production. Fans of HGO know that it brings opera, fully staged with orchestra, to north London. A chamber opera company, working with young singers, it punches way above its weight, winning awards and plaudits from the critics. If you haven’t yet experienced the magic of opera in a small theatre, now’s your chance.

24 May-20 Jun Offer Waterman Gallery Few artists are as well connected as Tarka Kings. Married to David Ogilvy, the eldest son of the Earl of Airlie, her work is held in many private collections including the Duke of Devonshire, Jacob Rothschild and Susan Kapoor, wife of Anish. Kings has

(020 8341 4421; hgo.org.uk;

worked exclusively in graphite and coloured pencil for the past decade – her exquisitely detailed drawings are the result of close and contemplative observation, conveying an intimate sense of time and place. Still is Still Moving is an exhibition of 20 new works on paper, her first at Mayfair’s Offer Waterman gallery. Elegant, eloquent and enigmatic.

Bring Learning to Life

EXHIBITION

Tacita Dean: Landscape

19 May-12 Aug Royal Academy of Arts Tacita Dean is one of the Young British Artists who dazzled the art world in the early ’90s. Now she’s more of a grande dame, with not one but three exhibitions in London this year. Her show, at the Royal Academy in its 250th anniversary year, inaugurates the new Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Galleries; it focuses on landscape in its broadest sense, with collections of found objects and a monumental blackboard drawing of cloudscapes. A fan of old-school 35mm film, Dean has also created a major two-screen cinematographic work, Antigone, which combines multiple places, geologies and seasons. Spectacular. The Royal Parks provide a wealth of natural environments and hidden stories in the heart of London. This summer, the state of the art LookOut Discovery Centre gives students the opportunity to explore nature and get close to wildlife right in the centre of Hyde Park. The LookOut has inspired more than 35,000 students through hands-on experiences linked to their curriculum. Throughout the year, students learn about life cycles and camouflage tactics, experience changing seasons, and investigate invertebrates. Secondary and A-level students can also complete their fieldwork for A-level, BTEC and International Baccalaureate programmes. The LookOut and The Royal Parks’ Schools and Community programmes hold a Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge, helping teachers identify high quality educational experiences in a safe environment. And the friendly and welcoming team offers unique learning experiences adapted to the needs of each student. To find out more, visit royalparks.org.uk/ learn or email learn@royalparks.org.uk. The Royal Parks is the charity that cares for 5,000 acres of glorious Royal parkland and 500 years of history in the heart of our capital city. Every year it welcomes 77 million visitors to eight of London’s largest open spaces, including Hyde Park, The Green Park, Richmond Park, Greenwich Park, St. James’s Park, Bushy Park, The Regent’s Park, and Kensington Gardens. Registered charity no. 1172042.

LU S T L I S T

The gift of the fab

Wedding gifting has evolved: the traditional bridal registry, designed to help young newlyweds set up home without doubling up on fondue sets, seems vintage today. Chances are your sassy recipients will be on their third home – maybe even their third marriage – such is modern life. Now the onus is on gift-givers to get more creative with quirky homewares, outright luxuries, and altogether more personal prezzies, whether there’s a department store list or not. Permission to go off-registry and indulge…

A gilded crown bulb encased in intricate brass fretwork with a band of gold as a base… how’s this luxe Ligne Roset Jali table lamp for a bright idea? (£184, heals.com)

It may not be a royal wedding but bride and groom will feel like queen and king in Windsor, the ultimate silk bedspread, which is also available in Ivory for purists. (From £549, gingerlily.co.uk)

Love, peace and luxury carpets make for a happy marriage. For the ultimate treat underfoot, Illulian Design Studio’s vibrant geo Woodstock rug hits all the right notes. (£8,697, store. wallpaper.com)

Smeg x Dolce & Gabbana is a design match made in heaven. From the Sicily Is My Love collection, the KLF03 kettle makes a stand-out statement that vows to keep morning tea-making harmonious. (£400, selfridges.com)

Superior Italian artistry and craftsmanship have gone into creating this super soft leather holdall. Send them on their honeymoon in style with the Bric’s Weekender. (£340, harrods.com)

Who says marriage can be a daily grind? This beautifully handmade brass mill by Freight will make passing the pepper a joy for years to come. (£55, freightstore.co.uk)

GIFTING TRENDS

If marriage is a mirror, make sure it’s a seriously stylish one, like the timeless Ghidini 1961 Sunset mirror in polished brass. (£1,170, artemest.com)

An opulent gold velvet cushion featuring House of Hackney’s Tibetan tiger-inspired Saber motif… Here’s to a lifetime of luxury lounging on the marital couch. (£195, libertylondon.com)

The couple who swig together stay together: this traditional stainless steel hip flask by Aspinal, bound in smooth Italian calf leather, features a sneaky set of twin decanters. (£85, selfridges.com)

Still unsure what to give the couple who have everything? The personal shopping team at Harrods give us their take on modern day wedding gifts “We are proud to be able to provide our customers with the very best products the world has to offer, and wedding gifting is no exception. With a royal wedding just around the corner, our Home Stylists have seen certain gifting trends becoming increasingly popular, including gift monogrammed silverware and complete dinner sets. There has been a slight revival around home entertaining too; the more savvy guests opt for crystal decanters and eccentric barware options, whereas younger couples now tend to invest more on collector pieces such as Jeff Koons for Bernardaud, exclusive home centrepieces by Lalique or limited edition fine art pieces from the likes of Andy Warhol and Lorenzo Quinn.”

With notes of clove bud, carnation and cotton musks, Byredo’s scented Altar candle will keep memories of the nuptials alight beyond the church ceremony. (£54, net-a-porter.com)

How do you shop for the couple who (seemingly) have everything? “To really make a wedding gift special, personalisation has become key. We are able to provide this service in many different departments; one example being the new Luggage Department (ideal for the honeymoon getaway) and the engraving service in the new Wines & Spirits room, allowing gifts to be personalised with anything, from monogramming or simple meaningful messages, to elaborate personalised designs. These can be etched directly onto bottles, glassware (from Champagne flutes to decanters), leather (for hip flasks), wooden gift boxes and cardboard boxes.” Traditionally a wedding gift list helped the bride and groom to “set up home”. How has this changed over the years? “Whilst the more traditional homeware and luxury bedding by leading brands such as Frette, Christofle and Baccarat are still in demand, in recent years we have seen an increase in popularity of experiential gifts, such as fragrance or wine masterclasses, post-wedding beauty treatments at the Wellness Clinic, and once-ina-lifetime honeymoons by the in-store travel specialist Abercrombie & Kent.”

LEGAL EYE

FABRIC PROMOTION

Ask the right questions If you are considering cosmetic surgery, it’s important to establish who is liable should something go wrong. Here are the key points to bear in mind If you have ever considered cosmetic surgery, then you certainly are not alone. Figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) show that 28,315 surgical procedures were carried out in the UK in 2017. Of this number, breast augmentation remains the most popular procedure with 8,251 taking place. Speak to most surgeons and they will agree that ‘surgery season’ runs each year from April to June in readiness for the great summer getaway. This means that right now, there are private clinics across the country seeing prospective clients explaining what they can do for them and what results they can achieve. No doubt those considering cosmetic surgery will undertake a programme of ‘due diligence’, asking many questions before deciding on the clinic to carry out

their surgery. But one of the questions that’s unlikely to be asked is whether the surgeon carrying out the surgery is employed by the clinic or is self-employed. Why, though, is this such a crucial question? Choosing a private clinic: what you need to know The law states that a defendant (in this case a clinic) is “liable for the negligent act of a servant, committed in the course of his employment and not that of an independent contractor”. Stephanie Prior, head of medical negligence at Osbornes, explains that it is quite clear that an NHS surgeon is a ‘servant’ and employed by the NHS. “Where things get tricky, and what a lay person making an enquiry to a private clinic may not know,” she says, “is that some surgeons are classed by private clinics as self-employed rather than employed. Therefore,

should a claim for negligence be brought, the clinic would argue that it is the individual, self-employed clinician who is liable and not the clinic!” This was the situation for a client Stephanie recently represented. “The surgery was performed negligently,” she explains. “The client instructed us to pursue a compensation claim and a letter of claim was sent to the clinician. It very quickly became apparent that the clinician had made himself uncontactable, so the letter was sent to the private clinic where the surgery took place. The clinic responded, arguing that the clinician was self-employed and that they were not responsible for his action. Our client was unaware that the clinician was self-employed.” And herein lies the issue. Patients will normally make an enquiry to a private clinic rather than a specific clinician. They assume that clinician is employed by the clinic;

they are hardly ever informed that the clinician who will carry out their surgery is self-employed. The consequence is, that in the event of a negligence claim, the injured party will have to sue the clinician direct. As can be seen from the recent case, this is not always easy. Therefore, if you are considering cosmetic surgery, it is wise to clarify the employment status of your surgeon at the outset, and insist that a direct employee of the clinic perform your operation.

If you would like more information about medical negligence claims, contact Stephanie Prior on 020 7485 8811, stephanie.prior@ osborneslaw.com Osborneslaw.com

Fashion& beauty Dress for your shape… Many people think big boobs are minimised by high necklines: FALSE! Go for low, soft and slightly more open, like a gentle V with plenty of collarbone on show. This adds a new dimension to the collarbone and chest area. A design that nips you in at the waist will help to create a silhouette if you have an athletic figure. Pleats and peplums are also great as they add a touch of curve to the hip area. Cigarette trouser legs are lovely on petite frames as they are very good at elongating leg length. Pair with a soft capped sleeve and you’re winning! Jumpsuits looks fab on tall women, the key is proportion, so find a good balance between the top half and bottom half to ensure you make the best of your height.

The colour of love

HERE COMES THE BRIDE Not wedded to the idea of a dress? Just because you’re getting married doesn’t mean you have to wear one, and you certainly don’t have to stick to white, says bridal designer Hannah Ollichon: “Don’t be swayed by family pressures or traditional expectations. Embrace your vision and stick to channeling who you are. Everyone is individual and I would encourage every bride to wear whatever they want. If it makes you happy and helps you to feel confident and special, go for it!” Not clear what your vision is? Hannah has the following advice

I love a splash of colour; there are a lot of dresses on Instagram at the moment with floral colours, tie dye effects or even a full on bright colour. It’s about balance, if you opt for an alternative colour for a jumpsuit, you may end up looking like a guest! If you go for a big gown it will be very clear who the bride is, so you have more flexibility to mix up colours.

Finishing touches There are so many gorgeous bridal accessories out there. I personally think a cape is an awesome way to create drama with a modern twist. I also adore crystal crowns; they are so regal without bowing to the tiara/flower crown stereotype. On a recent shoot I also used a back drop necklace, which can really highlight a pretty back. SOLE MATES It stands to reason that picking the perfect pair of wedding shoes is almost as important as deciding on your dress. And it couldn’t be easier with north London-based Harriet Wilde’s bespoke shoe atelier service, which allows brides to choose any style from the collection and add their own embellishments, as well as being able to have the shoes made in their choice of colour and material, and emboss personal messages on the soles. But if you don’t know where to start, the team have this advice to ensure you don’t put a foot wrong

FACE IT Whether you’re the bride or simply a guest, wedding parties can mean long days, and knowing how to apply make-up that will last the distance is a skill (as is knowing how to make your look appear flawless in photographs). Somebody who knows all about that is awardwinning Little Venice-based makeup artist and photographer Anita Warszawska. Here are her top tips to create a lasting look:

4. Contouring and highlighting are

1. Don’t skip primer or base, which not only makes your make-up last longer, but also gives you that extra glow. My favourites at the moment are Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow and Fresh Glow Golden Radiance by Burberry. Both can be used as a base, mixed with your foundation, or used on top of your make-up.

5. Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Complexion isn’t just for under the eyes, you can also use it around your lips to prevent lip colour bleeding (a secret of every celebrity make-up artist!). And finish lips with a touch of gloss in the middle of the bottom lip. This gives a brilliant threedimensional look.

key, don’t skip them! Guerlain has a wonderful selection of Terracotta Bronzing Powders, which are brilliant for contouring (and smell wonderful!). For highlighting, I really like Hourglass powders. They are very fine and blend beautifully into the skin. In photographs their particles reflect the light of the flash really nicely, making them perfect for brides.

1. COMFORT IS KEY

If you’re not used to wearing high heels, go for low heels (nobody will think less of you). 2. CONSIDER THE TERRAIN

Whether you’ve decided on a rustic outdoors setting, a sophisticated city wedding or a traditional church wedding, bear in mind how easy it will be to navigate the surfaces.

Anita was recently named ‘Creative Make-Up Artist of the Year’ at The London Hair & Beauty Awards 2017. As well as wedding make-up, she offers make-up lessons and beauty shoots in her Little Venice studio (07766 503817; anitawarszawska.com)

3. I’m never without my Nars Cosmetics Pro Prime Smudge Eyeshadow Base, which prevents eyeshadow from creasing. And I love using By Terry’s creamy eyeshadows; they are so easy to use and give an amazing result.

46

fabricmagazine.co.uk

Choose something that you can see yourself wearing again. Coloured shoes are becoming more popular, whether they match the bridesmaid’s dresses or count as ‘something blue’. And consider suede or leather for a more wearable style. 4. THINK AHEAD

Don’t leave shopping for shoes too late. Most dress shops require you to have the shoes at the final fitting to ensure that the hem length is correct.

2. For a lasting finish, blot skin

with blotting tissues between applying layers of foundation. You can buy these in any beauty store or pharmacy. If you don’t have any of them on the day, use normal tissues, but be sure to separate them so they are very thin.

3. INVEST WISELY

SCENTS OF OCCASION

Smell is so evocative that a spritz of the right perfume can be key in making lasting memories. Step up Jo Malone’s complimentary wedding consultation service. From advising on fragrance combining, to choosing scented candles for the venue and selecting gifts for the wedding party, with a little help from the Jo Malone wedding stylists, you can ensure that the day is totally unique. Better yet, sessions include a glass of bubbles and a relaxing hand massage. For details, see jomalone.co.uk

5. FINALLY…

We can’t stress how important it is to wear the shoes before your big day. Wearing them around the house with socks will help to soften the material, and ensure that they are comfortable on the day. 21C Bickerton House, 25-27 Bickerton Road, N19 (020 7263 4147; harrietwilde.com)

WEAR IT WELL What is it about wedding dressing that’s so stressful? From the uncertainty of the British weather to the unwritten dress code, when the invitations start to land, choosing a frock can be fraught to say the least. Anyone would think the cameras were going to be on you… There’s no need to panic, says London-based personal stylist Amanda Bernstein, who gives the following guidelines for guests

Headwear

5 1.

Been invited to a posh do? Whatever the event, there’s a hat for that. Here are our favourites

5.

1. ESTABLISH THE DRESS CODE

If it’s not printed on the invite, don’t be afraid to ask your host – you don’t want to get it wrong. 2. LESS IS MORE

2.

A low neckline to show off a limited amount of décolletage is okay, but not if it’s combined with a short skirt showing too much thigh. 3. DON’T PANIC BUY

Try not to buy something new from the high street just before the wedding. If it’s a large gathering, chances are one of the guests may have shopped at the same store as you and picked up an identical outfit. Wear something you already own or buy something new well in advance. 4. A HEAD START

3.

If you decide to wear a hat, be sure it’s on correctly. And keep your hair neat and tied back so that the focus is on your headpiece and not on your hair-do.

4.

5. COLOUR ME HAPPY

Your outfit is less likely to date if it is in a plain colour, and anything goes as long as it’s not white. By using clever accessories you can update and enhance your look.

1. Culebra, £685 (emily-london.com) | 2. Navy wide brim hat, Cara Meehan for Royal Ascot Millinery Collective, £415 (fenwick.co.uk) | 3. Petrol Black Feather Cocktail Hat by Holly Young Millinery, £47 (notonthehighstreet.com) | 4. Liv Steep Upturn Disc occasion hat, £140 (johnlewis.com) | 5. Sculpted Heart Shaped Millinery, £695 (suzannah.com)

6. COMFORT IS KEY

Wear something that is comfortable. You will be in it for most of the day and there’s nothing quite like wearing an ill-fitting outfit to make you feel under par. From individual styling to colour analysis and personal shopping, Amanda offers a variety of services designed to take the stress out of shopping for clothes, whatever the occasion. SAY IT IN STYLE From the wording to the design, a wedding invitation says so much about the day. Make sure yours send the right message with this advice from etiquette expert Jo Bryant, followed by our round up of the best stationers in town

Matt Parry

Your day, your way Finding the planning a little overwhelming? Don’t

drown in the details. Susie Young, founder of award-winning wedding planning and event styling company Knot & Pop has these words of advice: “Think about what brought you together. Some of the best wedding themes come directly from shared experiences. Brainstorm all the things that sum you up as both individuals, and as a couple. “It could be a shared love of winter walks, or even a style of music that gets you on the dancefloor. Once the memories and ideas start flowing, you’ll be well on the way to pinning down the ‘scheme’ that’s right for you both. “For our couples we often don’t have a set ‘theme’, more a happy marriage of a few key elements that bring about a unique scheme and setting for the day.

“For some, it’s about creating a timeless look and feel that will stand the test of time, and for others it’s about creating a snapshot of the time and place – the here and now, with no idea or colour too bright or bold. Knowing where you fall on that scale really helps you to define ideas. “There are lots of visual resources you can use these days. A personal favourite of ours is, of course, Pinterest but beware of inspiration overload! Try to keep focus to build up a selection of images that really translate your ideas, otherwise it’s easy to get confused. And whilst we love a trend or two, don’t let these dictate your choices. It’s all about creating something that YOU love. Your day, your way.” The team at Knot & Pop create, manage, style and plan parties, big occasion events and luxury weddings. To discover more about their services, see knotandpop.com

“When it comes to wedding invitations, remember they serve an aesthetic and practical purpose. The design hints at the style of wedding, and the wording provides key information – timings, location, venue, etc. It is customary to send invitations out two to three months before, but it is wise to send save-the-date cards eight to 10 months before. Depending on who is hosting, wording can get complicated, especially when you bring separated or remarried parents into the picture. When it all gets a bit too political, just opt for the simple ‘Thomas Jones and Joanna Smith, together with their parents, request the pleasure of/invite you…’ to involve everyone and keep the peace.” Jo Bryant is an etiquette expert. She offers a range of private tutoring and professional services, including wedding planning support, British protocols and customs, afternoon tea and dining etiquette, business conduct and soft skills training. CAPTURE THE MOMENT Don’t underestimate the importance of choosing a photographer – done well,

wedding photographs will perfectly reflect your unique day and stand as a lasting memory. Make sure you’re still looking fondly at them in years to come with these words of wisdom from Mick Shah, award-winning visual artist and founder of MIKI Photo + Film Studio: 52

fabricmagazine.co.uk

“Firstly, check that your prospective photographer’s style is consistent. It’s easy to get wowed by a portfolio of curated shots, but you want to see how they shoot over the course of a variety of events, and in particular at weddings that have a similar feel to that which you are hoping to create. “It’s also really important to feel comfortable with whoever

you choose. Ask yourself if you can imagine being with that person the whole day, or if you think they’ll get along with your guests and fit in with the vibe of your day. So much of wedding photography is about relating to people; whoever you choose, you want to feel you can trust them, and that you would feel comfortable telling them exactly what you want.” (mikistudios.com)

1 Fill the glass with cubed ice. 2 Place all of the ingredients, except for the garnish and the berry reduction, into a cocktail shaker and add plenty of cubed ice. 3 Shake for approximately 20 seconds and then strain the liquid from the shaker into the ice-filled glass. 4 Float the berry reduction over the drink. 5 Add garnish and serve.

Food as an experience People are now more emotionally connected to their dining experiences and are increasingly likely to opt for more unfamiliar ingredients in search of new tastes and textures. Menu choices are becoming more adventurous and there’s a huge trend for immersive experiences that people can connect with. We love creating food that calls on all the senses. We can include specially-created scents, soundscapes, wind machines and visual triggers. This brings about a heightened emotional response, tapping into memories and creating a stronger impact. Getting personal A big trend for this year is making weddings highly personal. Bubble does this in a number of ways, including creating personalised food. Dishes that are reminiscent of the place where a couple fell in love, that represent their culture, or that incorporate customisation elements can bring a real wow factor to the day. Luxury comfort food in particular can replicate and elevate a family dinner favourite. The exciting nature of Bubble’s memorable wedding food embraces that spirit of celebration and adventure perfectly; one of our most popular tongue-in-cheek canapés is Bubble Wedding’s fish and chips served upon little edible newspaper crisps featuring the couple’s names or a special message unique to them. It is the little touches like this that can really make the day feel magical. To discover more about Bubble and the services they offer, see bubbleweddings.com

No shrinking violets Thanks to couples branching out from classic bridal shades, bright is the new white. “I’ve noticed a move towards more colour in wedding flowers,” says florist Graeme from Bloom and Burn flowers. “I love working with traditional choices such as peonies, roses and dahlias, but I like to use them in punchier colours.” Bring colour to your blooms by swapping white and blush tones for fresh apricot and zingy chartreuse hues. Or, take inspiration from Pantone’s colour of the year – Ultra Violet – and include shades of purple, from powdery lilacs to deep aubergines. When it comes to photographing bright blooms, white is still out: “I find that dark walls make a great backdrop for colourful flowers,” adds Graeme.

There’s no better place to see these seasonal trends than Instagram. A natural playground for all things floral and pretty, you’ll probably find your feed filled with bloggers clutching blowsy peonies, as well as houses and gardens decked in all their spring finery: think tumbling clematis, blooming magnolia trees and purple wisteria. Just look up #wisteriahysteria to discover some of London’s finest floral spots this season.

Something new If you’ve ever been to a wedding or dinner party and had your view blocked by an elaborate floral centrepiece, you’ll like the high-flying alternative below. “We’ve been making a lot of hanging planks covered in flowers,” says florist Anna from The Flower Appreciation Society. “They’re particularly effective suspended above long banquet tables and bars, or against a plain wall backdrop.” For an at-home version, display hanging pots housing fleshy succulents, hardy air plants and trailing houseplants. The current trend for plants and botanicals means that foliage is no longer thought of as just a filler. Interesting greenery like ferns, fragrant herbs and grasses help add texture and movement to an arrangement and are just as important as their floral counterparts. What’s in season? The relaxed English country garden look has replaced more formal designs for several years. Loose, wildflower-inspired displays and meadow-fresh bouquets still reign, and this style goes hand in hand with the increasing desire to shop seasonally and locally. “We have so much to choose from in May and June,” says florist Vic from Scarlet & Violet. “English growers really come into their own with peonies, larkspur, alchemilla and frilly sweet peas all on offer.”

The good old-fashioned way Just like the current revival of vintage baby names, flowers that wouldn’t look out of place in grandma’s wedding pictures are back in style. “What’s in fashion often becomes part of our brief from a client,” explains Laura from Augustus Bloom. “Recently, we’ve noticed flowers that used to be considered old-fashioned, such as gypsophila, carnations and anthurium, are making a resurgence.” Royal weddings can help bring outmoded blooms back in the limelight, too. Steeped in tradition, royal nuptials feature certain flowers because of their traditional meanings. The Duchess of Cambridge’s delicate posy comprised timeless lily of the valley, Sweet Williams, hyacinths, ivy and myrtle, which still comes from Queen Victoria’s own garden; every royal bride has carried a sprig in their bouquet since the 19th century. We can’t wait to see which blooms Meghan will popularise in her bouquet when she marries Prince Harry this May!

Louise Ashworth Head of Luxury Resorts, Destinology Arguably the most romantic holiday of your life, it’s no wonder a honeymoon is one of our most considered holidays. At Destinology we’re careful not to prescribe the same formula to every honeymoon enquiry, but we have a few questions and pointers, which we’ve found do tend to help couples decide where to head

“Firstly, every couple is unique and your honeymoon should be too. Whether it’s a magical minimoon in the city, a beach paradise in the Maldives, a luxury African safari or island hopping in the Caribbean, indulgent honeymoons are possible in all sorts of destinations. If you’re wildly different, then consider multi-centre trips or perhaps even a cruise, to mix and match things you’ll both enjoy – Dubai and Mauritius? Miami and the Caribbean? Do consider booking your honeymoon through an accredited tour operator – as well as your holiday being protected, you’ll also benefit from expert help, with your consultant able to recommend the best room for those wanting to escape the crowds or the best spa treatments. If you can, indulge in special treats such as helicopter tours or beach dining that can create memories to last a lifetime. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask your guests to contribute – friends and family often love to help towards your holiday of a lifetime, or to sponsor a special treat or excursion. Setting up accounts is quick and simple, and contributions can be made online or by phone, leaving you with just the task of remembering to send all those exotic thank you postcards!” For more information or to speak to a Destinology honeymoon expert, visit destinology.co.uk, or call 01204 824619

MR ALI NOORANI CONSULTANT UPPER LIMB SURGEON Q. After injuring my knee six years ago, I have been told the persistent pain I am experiencing is arthritis and that sooner or later I will have to have a knee replacement. I consider myself young (52) and I enjoy my tennis and golf. I would really like to get back to sports. Is a knee replacement on the cards for me? Steven

A. Unfortunately, knee arthritis due to trauma or natural ageing is common. The good news is that new technologies are being developed which can preserve your natural knee. Total knee replacements have their place but I would consider joint preservation, especially with someone I would agree is relatively young.

There are many options including a procedure called osteotomy that can realign an arthritic joint. I would also consider a joint preservation technique, such as the new Lipogems technology, to rejuvenate your joint and restore the function of your knee. Fat contains lots of blood vessels and natural repair cells. These cells are extracted from your own fat and injected directly into the affected area. These cells trigger a natural healing response within the body. They can regrow tissue and many patients report a significant reduction in pain. I strongly believe that my primary role, as a surgeon, is to offer accurate assessment and precise diagnosis. I can’t emphasise enough the importance of a face-to -face assessment. This allows me to give an accurate diagnosis and a personalised plan for you. The symptoms that you are describing are common, and many patients need reassurance and explanations for the problems they are experiencing.

DR BEN ESDAILE CONSULTANT DERMATOLOGIST Q. My mother has recently been diagnosed with melanoma. I am now worried that I will also be diagnosed with it. Are genetic factors a leading cause of melanoma – is it hereditary? What can I do to prevent it? Juliet

A. I am sorry to hear your mother has been diagnosed with melanoma and I wish her the best of health. Melanoma is partly due to genetic factors, but not entirely – your lifestyle also has an impact on this. Risk factors for melanoma include: sun exposure, family history, how easily your skin burns and having many moles. Please do not be alarmed by any of these factors, as patients with melanoma tend to do

very well if picked up early enough. We now have a tool called a dermatoscope to help us pick up melanoma earlier. A dermatoscope is a handheld device that allows you to see structures in the skin that you’re unable to see with the naked eye. Early melanoma has certain structures that can be seen using the dermatoscope, helping to identify it earlier. Dermoscopy also helps pick up other types of skin cancer. It is worth having a full skin check as many skin cancers are picked up this way by dermatologists. The most important way to prevent melanoma is sun protection. Do not allow yourself to burn, never use sunbeds and protect your skin with clothes and broad spectrum sunscreen when exposed to sunlight. In an ideal world, you would also have an annual professional skin check with dermoscopy. As you can see, Juliet, there are many steps you are able to take to reduce your chance of developing melanoma and also to pick it up at an earlier stage. FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Since graduating from The Cass in 2009, London-based Adi Toch has exhibited internationally and earned herself a literal shelf-load of prestigious prizes, including a 2017 Wallpaper* Design Award. The modern-day metalsmith creates containers with a playful tactility, which challenge the way we interact with decorative objects. Her Vessels on Stilts series features metallic pots supported by delicate tripods, which dutifully wobble to noise, while her Whispering Vessels are so much more than the beautifully shiny house-jewels they first appear to be: with sand, steel balls or tiny gemstones moving around inside, creating waves of sound, they become palpable instruments. You’ll find the work of ceramic artist Celia Dowson at Hampstead’s Maud & Mabel, a boutique gallery and retail space dedicated to contemporary craft. A graduate of both Central Saint Martin’s and the Royal College of Art, Celia’s thoughtfully produced pieces focus on the qualities of light, unbound space and immersion, and range from the functional to the figurative. Her Shadow Works series was developed through studying light and shadows, with each piece created by carving away layers of clay to reveal a figurative form. The sculptures are then glazed in soft, satin colours, designed to exist subtly within an interior. (celiadowson.co.uk)

Racheline Michaels

GALLERIST AND INTERIOR DESIGNER

Over three decades, this elegant early Victorian home has grown organically to meet the changing needs of family life. And at its beating heart is a fabulously eclectic art collection WOR DS KA R E N H E A N E Y PHOTO G R A P H Y CAT HE R I NE HYL A ND

Racheline and her husband Paul have lived in this majestic double-fronted house in Highgate for 30 years. They moved here from Hampstead and turned an unloved, rambling property into a warm, vibrant home filled with an extraordinary collection of beautiful objects: paintings, sculpture, furniture and – Racheline’s great passion – ceramics. Their children grew up here, and now there are nine grandchildren to enjoy the 6,000 sq ft house and magnificent garden. The house has grown organically, changing shape to accommodate the different phases of family life. The Michaels added an extension to the back of the house 15 years ago, turning the footprint of the house into a horseshoe. Two years ago, they added another extension connecting the two arms of the horseshoe; this airy, light-filled space forms a striking contrast to the front of the house. Here, the rooms have a more traditional feel, thanks to the wealth of period features – original oak panelling in the hall, an impressive vaulted ceiling in the rotunda (a room added in 1900 by the then owner, a composer, to house a grand piano). “It’s an evolving space,” explains Racheline. “The living room was originally the kitchen… a snooker room became a table tennis room for the children. Now that all of them have left home we only have two bedroom suites on the first floor; the top floor is now a hobby room. The interior of the house hasn’t been driven by fashion, it’s grown with us. We’ll never move from here – it’s a love affair.” It’s the Michaels’ extraordinary, eclectic art collection that gives the house such presence. Like the house, it has grown organically over the years. Paul’s parents were keen art collectors, three of the Michaels’ children are artists, and of course, there are the ceramics. Racheline started buying ceramics for clients when she first worked as an interior designer. Her interest blossomed to the point where she opened her own gallery in a studio in the garden. “It was a

natural progression,” she says. “I have always appreciated form and shapes. I have a love of handmade things, things that have a soul. The feel of something is very important to me…” Now she has a separate gallery space, Hexagon Classic Design, in her husband Paul’s classic car showroom just down the road. Along with showing the work of young ceramicists in her own gallery, Racheline is a keen supporter of new talent through her involvement with the Contemporary Art Society. The charity encourages an appreciation of contemporary art by a wide audience, raising funds to purchase works by important and up-and-coming artists for museums and public galleries across the UK. It is remarkable how all these beautiful objects, in different media, from different eras, happily co-exist in this space. It takes an exceptional eye to display such an eclectic collection in such a harmonious way. “I like to play with proportions. Tall, skinny, wide – it’s counter-intuitive, but the larger the piece, the larger a room looks,” says Racheline. “A large work has presence, gravitas. It can provide a framework around which to build. I also like juxtaposing pieces from different eras – a Philippe Starck chair next to a very English table from the mid-1800s, for example.” Sometimes a kind of alchemy is at work, says Racheline. “It’s as though the pieces just find each other, or spark a new idea.” The Dufy-like painting in the sitting room inspired her to commission a work by Natasha Daintry, one of the ceramicists she represents. Another work by Daintry, an installation of 225 porcelain hand-thrown pots, was meant for the gallery, 68

but Racheline fell in love with it, even though it’s a study in yellow (a colour she doesn’t like and won’t have in the garden). “Things sometimes catch you off guard. I liked the work so much that I had a bespoke table made for it – and it looks fabulous with the yellow Memphis table.” “Everything in this house has a story,” explains Racheline. “The white abstract painting by Renouf I discovered in a gallery in Arles. It’s my favourite piece. I fell into conversation with the gallerist and discovered that she and I had distant family connections. Another treasured piece is a Paul Roberts handled raku pot. “I’d seen it in a book about Roberts’ work, and one day it appeared in an auction catalogue. It was serendipity. We finally found each other!” It comes as some surprise to learn that Racheline started her interior design business by mistake. “I was working for Browns fashion, in the Jil Sander shop, but I always had a passion for interior design. A surveyor I knew encouraged me to do up a flat in Montagu Square, and I went on to work for a property company. After that, I started taking on projects in north London.” So how would Racheline describe her design ethos? “You should be able to put your own things into a design without destroying its integrity,” she explains. “I like to leave gaps for clients to fill in themselves – interiors should be able grow with their owners.” It’s a philosophy that’s brought vividly to life in Racheline’s ever-evolving Highgate home. Rhapsody in Blue, the latest exhibition of ceramics at Hexagon Classic Design, runs until 27 July (hexagonclassicdesign.com)

Stockholm for design lovers In Sweden, great design is a way of life. And where better to experience it than in its stunning capital city, which is having a serious creative moment. Here’s our guide to the highlights WOR DS KA R E N H E A N E Y

Below: 1. The spire of City Hall is one of Stockholm’s most famous landmarks 2. Rustic charm and stunning views from Downtown Camper

Stockholmers proudly refer to their city as skönhet på vatten – “beauty on water”. It’s not hard to see why. Few capitals are as picturepostcard pretty as this Scandinavian gem, with its medieval Old Town, Baroque Royal Palace and Belle Epoque boulevards. But make no mistake, Stockholm is not hidebound by its heritage – behind the historic waterfront lies a dynamic modern capital that just oozes contemporary cool. Visitors to Stockholm quickly discover that Scandi design isn’t just an aesthetic, it’s a way of life. Clean lines, organic textures and minimal shapes are everywhere you go, from the modest cafés where the locals come for their fika fix (coffee, cake and conversation), to the smartest restaurants and boutiques. It’s hard-wired into the city’s DNA. Even the streetlights (4) are sleek and minimalist. To experience Swedish design at its most cutting edge, stay in one of the hip hotels on Brunkebergstorg

The square has become the launchpad for a new breed of lifestyle hotels, including At Six and Hobo, which combine high concept, design-led interiors with communal social areas and creative workspaces. Downtown Camper (2) is the latest arrival on the block. The hotel describes itself as a “basecamp for urban explorers”; the social areas have the vibe of a trendy hostel (giant hammocks, campfires, a games room), while the rooms are distinctly boutique hotel (minimalist bathrooms, moody lighting and window seat reading nooks). Cleverly marrying urban and rustic, the décor in the lobby pairs concrete with natural wood and active guests can hire kayaks, long boards and bikes from the front desk. If you’d rather kick back and relax, there’s a rooftop wellness area with a sauna disguised as a giant bird’s nest (yes, really) and a heated pool with stunning views of the Stockholm skyline. The adjacent cocktail bar, which serves a light breakfast in the morning, shares the same amazing vista. Definitely worth getting up for. Stockholm has three Designtorget, stocking a range of witty, clever designs, the largest is in Kungsgatan, which is just around the corner from Brunkebergstorg Square. Bolon Lab Store (3) on Birger Jarlsgatan is a next-generation design showroom that has become a meeting place for designers, architects and enthusiasts. Bolon, a traditional weaving company, creates trend-setting flooring and rugs, collaborating with high profile names such as Missoni. For a more laid-back vibe, check out the Hem Design Studio (7) in Eastmansvägen. This independent design studio brings a fresh twist to minimalist furniture, accessories and lighting. Serious design hounds should seek out the Sthlm Design District on the island of Södermalm, where you’ll find around 30 under-the-radar Swedish furniture and textile brands. No city break would be complete without visiting a couple of museums. Your first port of call should be the island of Skeppsholmen, just across the water from the Royal Palace, where you’ll find not one, but three stunning collections. ArkDes (5) is Sweden’s national centre for architecture and design, it hosts regular exhibitions but also serves as a “place of research, study and debate about how we will live in

the future”. Next door, with jaw-dropping views of the water and the city, is the Moderna Museet. There’s an impressive collection of modern art, covering 1900 to the present day, and a fabulous sculpture garden with some eye-catching large-scale works by Alexander Calder. Down on the waterfront, Fotografiska is a centre for contemporary photography offering world-class exhibitions, workshops and courses. Sweden has a particularly strong tradition of furniture making (all those pine forests!), a craft that is celebrated in the recently opened Möbeldesignmuseum (Museum of Furniture Studies) (6). The location takes a little finding – a warehouse on the commercial docks (seriously cool) – but the trip is worth it. Based on the private collection of designer/architects Kersti Sandin and Lars Bülow, the warehouse is home to 700 pieces of furniture from distinguished Nordic and international designers, spanning the late 1800s to the present day. The current exhibition is a love letter to chairs – expect to see design icons like Arne Jacobsen’s Egg Chair and Marcel Breuer’s Wassily Chair. If you fancy taking all your design inspiration in one big hit, Stockholm hosts its own Design Week in February every year. Coinciding with the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair, it draws the big names in the design world to the capital. The city joins in with light and media installations and special events in stores, hotels and restaurants. But if you don’t fancy braving the February cold, Stockholm has plenty to delight design lovers all year round.

AREA GUIDES

HAMPSTEAD GARDEN SUBURB Called the “Suburb” by locals, this tranquil north west London enclave was founded in 1907 thanks to the work of philanthropist Dame Henrietta Barnett. She aimed to save part of Hampstead Heath from development and create a healthy and beautiful place for people of all classes to live. Today, the area’s aesthetics are protected by the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust. The charming layout is widely recognised as one of the finest examples of twentieth century town planning, with its mix of gently curving roads, little closes and grand vistas designed by the architect Raymond Unwin. Popular with families for its excellent schools and abundance of green spaces – Big Wood, Little Wood, Golders Hill Park and Lyttelton Playing Fields are particularly notable – it exudes that village feel. Local shops can be found on Market Place; should you wish to venture further, there are plenty more excellent options close by in Temple Fortune, Golders Green and East Finchley WO RDS N AOM I M I S Q U I TA- R I CE PH OTO G R A P H Y KATHY A N N E L I M

SONIA SOLIMANI For this Hampstead Garden Suburb florist, the close-knit community and independent local businesses here are unrivalled in London When there aren’t peonies coming out of my ears and I can tear myself away from the shop, there are plenty of things to do in the local neighbourhood. threading appointments at Fringe and sometimes I’ll treat myself to a Dermalogica facial, too – it’s the perfect antidote to the stress of the shop. After this heavy work, I’m usually quite peckish, so I’ll take a trip to Zushi; their selection of fresh sushi is acclaimed for being some of the best in London. I’d like to think I burn off the calories as hard as I can, and one of the ways I do this is by trying to fit in a class at either Pilates by the Green or Raise the Barre. Down the road, there is a speciality grocery store called Bekem’s – it’s the only

place I’ve found that sells guavas, passionfruit and fresh börek alongside a wealth of goodies for the pantry. Amber Rose is my second home and at this point I’m usually feeling pretty homesick, so I’ll make my way back to the shop to prep for the next day. The Suburb is a unique place, with more small businesses here than anywhere else in London, so it’s great to be contributing to it, and to be a part of such a close-knit community. 6 Market Place, Falloden Way, NW11 (020 8455 4050; amberroseflowers.co.uk)

DID YOU KNOW? Hoop Lane, NW11, is home to London’s first ever crematorium. Having opened in 1902, it is one of the oldest crematoriums in Britain. A number of famous people, including Sigmund Freud, Bram Stoker and Amy Winehouse have been cremated there. The crematorium is a redbrick building, which was built in stages as money became available, and was designed in the Lombardic style by Sir Ernest George and Alfred Yeates. The gardens are Grade I listed and were laid out by William Robinson, who was famous at the time for championing wild gardening.

STREET HEARTS HAMPSTEAD GARDEN SUBURB North & South Squares Running parallel at either end of Central Square (the area’s hub), these pretty streets are lined with majestic Queen Anne-style properties and Arts and Crafts homes designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Two imposing churches flank a beautiful village-style green, creating a picturesque idyll Northway The abundance of greenery, a beautiful mix of large homes and cottage-style terraced properties, plus its proximity to a plethora of shops at Market Place make this spot well deserving of its reputation Asmuns Hill A part of what is known as the Artisans’ Quarter – a development prepared by Raymond Unwin in the early 1900s – there is a distinct village feel here, with pretty little (but sometimes deceptively large) white cottages facing one another across the tree-lined street

Our agents say...

“With its village green and strong sense of community, Hampstead Garden Suburb is one of the most desirable areas in north west London. Properties in this charming environment range from cottages to castles. You can start life here with a modest £300,000 apartment and make your way up the ladder to a mansion for £50 million. “The Market Place, Temple Fortune and Golders Green are the main watering holes, benefiting from a delightfully diverse mix of eclectic boutiques, delicatessens, bistros, cafés and all manner of utilitarian shops, some of which are open 24 hours. “If you are in any doubt that London is a plural Capital, take a walk down any of the high streets here and you’ll hear a panoply of languages being spoken. This is part of why London, where we are privileged to live, is the ‘greatest city on earth’.” Trevor Abrahmsohn, Glentree Estates

LOCAL HEROES BREAD BAKERY, NW11 This bright and bustling kosher bakery is the Temple Fortune branch of the ever-popular Hendon Bagel Bakery. “They have great fresh bread baked daily and some amazing Middle Eastern-style salads,” according to Charles Bobroff of Litchfields, as well as all manner of sweet patisserie treats. The on-site bakers use traditional proofing techniques, resulting in deliciously rich breads. There’s outdoor seating for brighter days and a wealth of choice for lunch, making this an ideal spot for a pit stop. 1 Bridge Lane, NW11 (020 8455 9340; breadbakery.co.uk) LE PREMIER SHOE CARE, NW11 This is a little gem of an independent shoe repair firm in Golders Green, offering a superb quality of workmanship. As well as sprucing up

footwear that’s in need of some love, they offer a key cutting service. Plus, there’s an adjoining shop that sells shoes and other accessories; both are run by two lovely gentlemen who have 30 years’ experience in the business. Viv Harris from Heathgate thinks they are “probably the best cobblers this side of London.” 5-6 Belmont Parade, Finchley Road, NW11 (020 8209 0293) NU NOSH, NW11 A neighbourhood café that is “always packed out, especially in the summer,” says Cobi Aboody of Goldschmidt & Howland. This must be, in part, due to its ample outdoor seating, but probably mainly because of the delicious offering of traditional breakfasts, salads, sandwiches, smoothies and iced coffees – and all available to eat in or enjoy on the go. The casual atmosphere means it’s suitable for children, too. It’s just the ticket for a food or caffeine fix, and is a welcome haven, away from the bustle of the Finchley Road. 816 Finchley Road, NW11 (020 8731 8103; eatwell.nu)

“Hampstead Garden Suburb has something for every budget with a mix of starter flats, small cottages and 25,000 square foot dream homes. We are fortunate to be within walking distance of some of the nicest green open spaces in London, including the Heath Extension, 74-acres at Kenwood House and Golders Hill Park – a dog walker’s paradise! On top of this, Golders Green, Temple Fortune and Hampstead are all within five minutes’ walk. What more could you ask?” Jeremy Fine, Godfrey & Barr fabricmagazine.co.uk

Schools THOUGHT PIECE

The young ones A year is a long time when you’re four. So it’s no surprise that an August-born four-year-old may not have the motor skills of a classmate who turns five in September. But while children born between 1 April and 31 August will soon be able to defer a year, the change has yet to happen. And we don’t know if, or how, the private sector might respond. So what options do you currently have if your child is young in their year? “If your child’s birthday is at the end of August, it’s possible that a school might let them join later,” says Lucy Watts, an educational consultant at Ivy Education. “But that tends to happen when the child has both a summer birthday and a specific learning need. Otherwise, parents are better off letting the child start school and addressing any issues each year.” Lucy has seven tips for supporting a summer-born child:

1. Ask your child’s prospective school for its policy on this topic. Does it divide the children by age, or have a spread of birthdays in each class? Does it offer a couple of half

days a week for young children in the first term? 2. Don’t underestimate what your child can do. A lot of summerborn children are ready to move from nursery to a more structured learning environment. 3. Help your child to learn the basics, such as their letters and numbers. This will give them a good foundation on which to build. 4. Get to know the curriculum and work with individual teachers to support your child. This could be help from you, a tutor or both. 5. Think about the environment: if your child isn’t ready for a larger setting at eight years old, a small middle school could suit them. Some schools also age-weight their 8+ exam papers. 6. Look ahead. If you’re considering holding your child back, make sure you discuss it with the senior schools. Some insist children are 13 when they join. 7. If your child gets held back, look at how the school structures its classes. You don’t want them to feel left behind or that they’ve done anything wrong. (ivyeducation.co.uk)

How would you sum up the school in a sentence? At KAS the children and young people enjoy school, achieve impressive academic success on their own terms, develop the skills and understanding for life-long wellbeing, and are well prepared for a successful future. What makes it different? We’re committed to both academic success and

personal development. We’re informal, have no uniform and use first names. As a result, everyone can be themselves and thrive. Describe your educational ethos? Exam success is important, but I don’t believe it should be the sole focus and driver. I want children to enjoy their time at school, develop their passions,

interests and skills and be creative, flexible and innovative. It’s what they’ll need for success in the 21st century. How do you look after the wellbeing of your pupils? Wellbeing is central to our purpose. We seek to avoid unnecessary pressures and stress for young people by taking an enlightened approach to assessment. We teach

pupils about wellbeing through our personal, social and health education (PSHE) programme. And if any pupil does experience challenges or difficulties, there’s an extensive and experienced pastoral team to support them. 5 ways to future-proof your kitchen If your dream kitchen is ‘broken-plan’, with metal finishes and dark cabinets, you’re bang on trend. But what if you fit it today, then fall out of love with it in five years?

“Trends do change,” says Sofia Bune Strandh, CEO of Sola Kitchens. “Dark shades have been around for a few years, for example, but I think light ones will be back soon. And you may love brass doors now, but you could feel very different in the future. You don’t want to spend £40-50,000 on a kitchen then have to completely replace it.” The key is to ask yourself whether you’re likely to tire of your chosen style, says Sofia – then make sure you can change aspects of the design. Here are her tips for how to do it. 1. Be subtle. If you use fashionable finishes sparingly – for example, a copper splash back or section of worktop – you’ll be able to

live with them for longer. If not, they’re easy to swap. 2. Think ahead. If you want your metal doors to be shiny in three years, you’ll need a lacquered or waxed finish. But if you want them to age naturally, you’ll need to leave them untreated. Whatever your vision, tell your kitchen designer upfront. 3. Give yourself options. We use brass and copper doors on our standard cupboards, so clients can change them further down the line. We also recommend paying the extra £3-5,000 for hand-painted units, so you can transform your kitchen at any time. 4. Break up your space with something replaceable. Open-plan

is still popular. But we’re starting to see people use doors to divide up the room, such as steel or aluminium Crittall doors. These let in the light and are easy to change if you get fed up. 5. Avoid false economies. Clients often want to put high-end appliances and worktops on to cheaper cabinets. But when the cabinets start to break, you can’t easily change them. If you want to save money, you’re better off spending more on good-quality cabinets and less on the worktop and appliances. That way, you can always repaint the doors and buy new appliances for a completely fresh look. solakitchens.com

How did you get into architecture? I remember drawing from a very young age and going to galleries with my mother. My art teacher wanted me to go to art school but I just had a hunch about the world of architecture and its magic. What can you offer clients that others can’t? We listen. I often draw and listen at the same time. Potential clients get drawn into the sketch, which promotes good discourse. We try to make each design unique to each client and will always try to find an angle on getting planning approval. What’s your design ethos? To make delightful, well-crafted spaces that reflect the client’s needs. Architecture is an act of belief and an investment in society. Describe your dream project Designing a religious building or boutique hotel. What would you say to a client who wants to future-proof their kitchen? Choose classic materials that won’t date. This way, you’ll grow into and with the space. What advice would you give to someone looking for an architect? People relate to people. A potential client needs to ‘click’ with their designer; they need to feel comfortable. Arriving in my orange leather jacket on a scooter lightens things up. Years in the business? 17 years… clearly I started work at age six! I love London because… of the diversity. First London home? A starter flat in the north London suburbs. If I wasn’t an estate agent I would be… working with horses somewhere.

A match made in London With nearly sixty years as an estate agency in north London, Benham & Reeves is one of the oldest and mostrespected names in the business. Now it’s joining Dexters’ growing network of offices across the Capital. The four Benham & Reeves offices in West Hampstead, Hampstead, Dartmouth Park and Highgate are rebranding, but “it’s business as usual for now, with the same strong team in place,” says Dexters’ CEO, Andy Shepherd. Dexters has a network of more than 60 offices across the Capital,

including 28 in central London. The acquisition will supplement a thriving business, which already handles in excess of 20,000 property transactions per year and currently has more than 55,000 registered active buyers and tenants. The Benham & Reeves Residential Lettings business we know and love will continue to operate as usual – offering rentals via 16 London offices and five more located overseas. The perfect London pad awaits… (dexters.co.uk; brlets.co.uk)

Q. I’m working overseas for two years and want to let my home while I’m away. What advice would you give? A. If you’re moving overseas and letting your property, it is vital you choose the right ARLA qualified agent on a sole agency basis, and to go for the management service. I would recommend an agent with a management team based locally, who can deal with issues promptly and visit the property as needed. This will give you the best possible chance of retaining a tenant throughout your two years abroad – having a void period and needing to remarket will be costly. In order to achieve the best possible rent, my advice would be to make sure the property is presented in its best possible light – clutter free and refreshed as necessary.

Favourite London Street? Locally, Manchester Square, further afield, Chiswick High Street. Favourite client/sale? Too many to narrow down, we are very fortunate at McGlashans to have lovely, long standing clients. Favourite haunts? Regent’s Park, a little bit of tranquility in the middle of a busy city. Favourite place to grab a coffee? Inn 1888 on Devonshire Street makes a fabulous espresso martini! Where do you go for headspace in the city? The seating area outside the Wallace Collection. What’s your hidden talent? I’m a qualified make-up artist. Period property or new-build? Period property. Take one person, dead, alive or fictional, out in London – who and where? Anthony Joshua… that’s as far as I get before losing all concentration. Aliens attack – which London landmark would you save? The Tower of London. Creature comfort you can’t live without. My beautiful four-poster bed from McGlashan’s Interiors.

REASON #16

Wading into the deep end of a sale The difference between them and us, is us. While we help all sorts of folk move to all sorts of properties, fish have never been our customers. Or they weren’t until we spotted a leaking pond on a valuation. The elderly owner didn’t know what to do, so we borrowed some wellies and saved our new floundering friends. We netted the sale too.
