Tacita Dean: Landscape

19 May-12 Aug Royal Academy of Arts Tacita Dean is one of the Young British Artists who dazzled the art world in the early ’90s. Now she’s more of a grande dame, with not one but three exhibitions in London this year. Her show, at the Royal Academy in its 250th anniversary year, inaugurates the new Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Galleries; it focuses on landscape in its broadest sense, with collections of found objects and a monumental blackboard drawing of cloudscapes. A fan of old-school 35mm film, Dean has also created a major two-screen cinematographic work, Antigone, which combines multiple places, geologies and seasons. Spectacular.

Ask the right questions If you are considering cosmetic surgery, it’s important to establish who is liable should something go wrong.

Here are the key points to bear in mind If you have ever considered cosmetic surgery, then you certainly are not alone. Figures from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) show that 28,315 surgical procedures were carried out in the UK in 2017.

Of this number, breast augmentation remains the most popular procedure with 8,251 taking place.

Speak to most surgeons and they will agree that ‘surgery season’ runs each year from April to June in readiness for the great summer getaway. This means that right now, there are private clinics across the country seeing prospective clients explaining what they can do for them and what results they can achieve.

No doubt those considering cosmetic surgery will undertake a programme of ‘due diligence’, asking many questions before deciding on the clinic to carry out

their surgery. But one of the questions that’s unlikely to be asked is whether the surgeon carrying out the surgery is employed by the clinic or is self-employed. Why, though, is this such a crucial question?

Choosing a private clinic: what you need to know The law states that a defendant (in this case a clinic) is “liable for the negligent act of a servant, committed in the course of his employment and not that of an independent contractor”.

Stephanie Prior, head of medical negligence at Osbornes, explains that it is quite clear that an NHS surgeon is a ‘servant’ and employed by the NHS. “Where things get tricky, and what a lay person making an enquiry to a private clinic may not know,” she says, “is that some surgeons are classed by private clinics as self-employed rather than employed. Therefore,

should a claim for negligence be brought, the clinic would argue that it is the individual, self-employed clinician who is liable and not the clinic!”

This was the situation for a client Stephanie recently represented.

“The surgery was performed negligently,” she explains. “The client instructed us to pursue a compensation claim and a letter of claim was sent to the clinician. It very quickly became apparent that the clinician had made himself uncontactable, so the letter was sent to the private clinic where the surgery took place. The clinic responded, arguing that the clinician was self-employed and that they were not responsible for his action. Our client was unaware that the clinician was self-employed.”

And herein lies the issue. Patients will normally make an enquiry to a private clinic rather than a specific clinician. They assume that clinician is employed by the clinic;

they are hardly ever informed that the clinician who will carry out their surgery is self-employed. The consequence is, that in the event of a negligence claim, the injured party will have to sue the clinician direct. As can be seen from the recent case, this is not always easy.

Therefore, if you are considering cosmetic surgery, it is wise to clarify the employment status of your surgeon at the outset, and insist that a direct employee of the clinic perform your operation.

Many people think big boobs are minimised by high necklines: FALSE! Go for low, soft and slightly more open, like a gentle V with plenty of collarbone on show. This adds a new dimension to the collarbone and chest area.

HERE COMES THE BRIDE Not wedded to the idea of a dress? Just because you’re getting married doesn’t mean you have to wear one, and you certainly don’t have to stick to white, says bridal designer Hannah Ollichon: “Don’t be swayed by family pressures or traditional expectations. Embrace your vision and stick to channeling who you are. Everyone is individual and I would encourage every bride to wear whatever they want. If it makes you happy and helps you to feel confident and special, go for it!” Not clear what your vision is? Hannah has the following advice

I love a splash of colour; there are a lot of dresses on Instagram at the moment with floral colours, tie dye effects or even a full on bright colour. It’s about balance, if you opt for an alternative colour for a jumpsuit, you may end up looking like a guest! If you go for a big gown it will be very clear who the bride is, so you have more flexibility to mix up colours.

Finishing touches There are so many gorgeous bridal accessories out there. I personally think a cape is an awesome way to create drama with a modern twist.

I also adore crystal crowns; they are so regal without bowing to the tiara/flower crown stereotype. On a recent shoot I also used a back drop necklace, which can really highlight a pretty back.

The design hints at the style of wedding, and the wording provides key information – timings, location, venue, etc. It is customary to send invitations out two to three months before, but it is wise to send save-the-date cards eight to 10 months before.

Depending on who is hosting, wording can get complicated, especially when you bring separated or remarried parents into the picture. A glass (medium sized wine or SlimJim 30-35cl) INGREDIENTS Ice, cubed 40ml English sauvignon blanc 30ml Spirit of Hven organic Aquavit 25ml fresh lime juice 20-25ml elderflower and borage honey cordial (this is best made using fresh elderflower bunches with no leaves: steep in boiling water with citrus peels and infuse overnight, then remove the elderflowers and citrus, add borage honey to taste and 54

heat through gently, avoiding boiling.

Remove from heat and refrigerate for 24 hours before use) 10-15ml raspberry and blackcurrant reduction (crush fresh berries in a pan with sugar and a touch of London dry gin. Simmer over a low heat to desired thickness.

1 Fill the glass with cubed ice.

2 Place all of the ingredients, except for the garnish and the berry reduction, into a cocktail shaker and add plenty of cubed ice.

3 Shake for approximately 20 seconds and then strain the liquid from the shaker into the ice-filled glass.

4 Float the berry reduction over the drink.

5 Add garnish and serve.

Food as an experience People are now more emotionally connected to their dining experiences and are increasingly likely to opt for more unfamiliar ingredients in search of new tastes and textures.

No shrinking violets Thanks to couples branching out from classic bridal shades, bright is the new white. “I’ve noticed a move towards more colour in wedding flowers,” says florist Graeme from Bloom and Burn flowers. “I love working with traditional choices such as peonies, roses and dahlias, but I like to use them in punchier colours.” Bring colour to your blooms by swapping white and blush tones for fresh apricot and zingy chartreuse hues. Or, take inspiration from Pantone’s colour of the year – Ultra Violet – and include shades of purple, from powdery lilacs to deep aubergines. When it comes to photographing bright blooms, white is still out: “I find that dark walls make a great backdrop for colourful flowers,” adds Graeme.

There’s no better place to see these seasonal trends than Instagram. A natural playground for all things floral and pretty, you’ll probably find your feed filled with bloggers clutching blowsy peonies, as well as houses and gardens decked in all their spring finery: think tumbling clematis, blooming magnolia trees and purple wisteria. Just look up #wisteriahysteria to discover some of London’s finest floral spots this season.

Something new If you’ve ever been to a wedding or dinner party and had your view blocked by an elaborate floral centrepiece, you’ll like the high-flying alternative below. “We’ve been making a lot of hanging planks covered in flowers,” says florist Anna from The Flower Appreciation Society. “They’re particularly effective suspended above long banquet tables and bars, or against a plain wall backdrop.” For an at-home version, display hanging pots housing fleshy succulents, hardy air plants and trailing houseplants. The current trend for plants and botanicals means that foliage is no longer thought of as just a filler. Interesting greenery like ferns, fragrant herbs and grasses help add texture and movement to an arrangement and are just as important as their floral counterparts.

What’s in season?

The relaxed English country garden look has replaced more formal designs for several years. Loose, wildflower-inspired displays and meadow-fresh bouquets still reign, and this style goes hand in hand with the increasing desire to shop seasonally and locally. “We have so much to choose from in May and June,” says florist Vic from Scarlet & Violet.

“English growers really come into their own with peonies, larkspur, alchemilla and frilly sweet peas all on offer.”

The good old-fashioned way Just like the current revival of vintage baby names, flowers that wouldn’t look out of place in grandma’s wedding pictures are back in style. “What’s in fashion often becomes part of our brief from a client,” explains Laura from Augustus Bloom. “Recently, we’ve noticed flowers that used to be considered old-fashioned, such as gypsophila, carnations and anthurium, are making a resurgence.”

Royal weddings can help bring outmoded blooms back in the limelight, too. Steeped in tradition, royal nuptials feature certain flowers because of their traditional meanings.

The Duchess of Cambridge’s delicate posy comprised timeless lily of the valley, Sweet Williams, hyacinths, ivy and myrtle, which still comes from Queen Victoria’s own garden; every royal bride has carried a sprig in their bouquet since the 19th century. After injuring my knee six years ago, I have been told the persistent pain I am experiencing is arthritis and that sooner or later I will have to have a knee replacement. I consider myself young (52) and I enjoy my tennis and golf. I would really like to get back to sports. Is a knee replacement on the cards for me?

A. Unfortunately, knee arthritis due to trauma or natural ageing is common. The good news is that new technologies are being developed which can preserve your natural knee. Total knee replacements have their place but I would consider joint preservation, especially with someone I would agree is relatively young.

There are many options including a procedure called osteotomy that can realign an arthritic joint. I would also consider a joint preservation technique, such as the new Lipogems technology, to rejuvenate your joint and restore the function of your knee.

Fat contains lots of blood vessels and natural repair cells.

A. I am sorry to hear your mother has been diagnosed with melanoma and I wish her the best of health.

Melanoma is partly due to genetic factors, but not entirely – your lifestyle also has an impact on this.

Risk factors for melanoma include: sun exposure, family history, how easily your skin burns and having many moles. Please do not be alarmed by any of these factors, as patients with melanoma tend to do

very well if picked up early enough.

We now have a tool called a dermatoscope to help us pick up melanoma earlier. A dermatoscope is a handheld device that allows you to see structures in the skin that you’re unable to see with the naked eye. Early melanoma has certain structures that can be seen using the dermatoscope, helping to identify it earlier.

Dermoscopy also helps pick up other types of skin cancer. It is worth having a full skin check as many skin cancers are picked up this way by dermatologists.

The most important way to prevent melanoma is sun protection. Do not allow yourself to burn, never use sunbeds and protect your skin with clothes and broad spectrum sunscreen when exposed to sunlight. In an ideal world, you would also have an annual professional skin check with dermoscopy.

As you can see, Juliet, there are many steps you are able to take to reduce your chance of developing melanoma and also to pick it up at an earlier stage.

Since graduating from The Cass in 2009, London-based Adi Toch has exhibited internationally and earned herself a literal shelf-load of prestigious prizes, including a 2017 Wallpaper* Design Award. The modern-day metalsmith creates containers with a playful tactility, which challenge the way we interact with decorative objects.

Her Vessels on Stilts series features metallic pots supported by delicate tripods, which dutifully wobble to noise, while her Whispering Vessels are so much more than the beautifully shiny house-jewels they first appear to be: with sand, steel balls or tiny gemstones moving around inside, creating waves of sound, they become palpable instruments. You’ll find the work of ceramic artist Celia Dowson at Hampstead’s Maud & Mabel, a boutique gallery and retail space dedicated to contemporary craft. A graduate of both Central Saint Martin’s and the Royal College of Art, Celia’s thoughtfully produced pieces focus on the qualities of light, unbound space and immersion, and range from the functional to the figurative. Her Shadow Works series was developed through studying light and shadows, with each piece created by carving away layers of clay to reveal a figurative form. Completing an apprenticeship at The Marches Pottery in Shropshire, Isatu Hyde moved to north west London to set up her own studio.

GALLERIST AND INTERIOR DESIGNER

Over three decades, this elegant early Victorian home has grown organically to meet the changing needs of family life. And at its beating heart is a fabulously eclectic art collection WOR DS KA R E N H E A N E Y PHOTO G R A P H Y CAT HE R I NE HYL A ND

Racheline and her husband Paul have lived in this majestic double-fronted house in Highgate for 30 years. They moved here from Hampstead and turned an unloved, rambling property into a warm, vibrant home filled with an extraordinary collection of beautiful objects: paintings, sculpture, furniture and – Racheline’s great passion – ceramics.

Their children grew up here, and now there are nine grandchildren to enjoy the 6,000 sq ft house and magnificent garden. The house has grown organically, changing shape to accommodate the different phases of family life. The Michaels added an extension to the back of the house 15 years ago, turning the footprint of the house into a horseshoe.

Two years ago, they added another extension connecting the two arms of the horseshoe; this airy, light-filled space forms a striking contrast to the front of the house. Here, the rooms have a more traditional feel, thanks to the wealth of period features – original oak panelling in the hall, an impressive vaulted ceiling in the rotunda (a room added in 1900 by the then owner, a composer, to house a grand piano).

“It’s an evolving space,” explains Racheline. “The living room was originally the kitchen… a snooker room became a table tennis room for the children.

Now that all of them have left home we only have two bedroom suites on the first floor; the top floor is now a hobby room. The interior of the house hasn’t been driven by fashion, it’s grown with us. We’ll never move from here – it’s a love affair.”

It’s the Michaels’ extraordinary, eclectic art collection that gives the house such presence. Like the house, it has grown organically over the years.

Paul’s parents were keen art collectors, three of the Michaels’ children are artists, and of course, there are the ceramics. Racheline started buying ceramics for clients when she first worked as an interior designer.

Her interest blossomed to the point where she opened her own gallery in a studio in the garden. “It was a

natural progression,” she says. “I have always appreciated form and shapes. I have a love of handmade things, things that have a soul. The feel of something is very important to me…” Now she has a separate gallery space, Hexagon Classic Design, in her husband Paul’s classic car showroom just down the road. Along with showing the work of young ceramicists in her own gallery, Racheline is a keen supporter of new talent through her involvement with the Contemporary Art Society. The charity encourages an appreciation of contemporary art by a wide audience, raising funds to purchase works by important and up-and-coming artists for museums and public galleries across the UK. It is remarkable how all these beautiful objects, in different media, from different eras, happily co-exist in this space. It takes an exceptional eye to display such an eclectic collection in such a harmonious way. “I like to play with proportions. Tall, skinny, wide – it’s counter-intuitive, but the larger the piece, the larger a room looks,” says Racheline. “A large work has presence, gravitas. It can provide a framework around which to build. I also like juxtaposing pieces from different eras – a Philippe Starck chair next to a very English table from the mid-1800s, for example.”

Sometimes a kind of alchemy is at work, says Racheline. “It’s as though the pieces just find each other, or spark a new idea.” The Dufy-like painting in the sitting room inspired her to commission a work by Natasha Daintry, one of the ceramicists she represents. Another work

by Daintry, an installation of 225 porcelain hand-thrown pots, was meant for the gallery, 68

but Racheline fell in love with it, even though it’s a study in yellow (a colour she doesn’t like and won’t have in the garden). “Things sometimes catch you off guard. I liked the work so much that I had a bespoke table made for it – and it looks fabulous with the yellow Memphis table.”

“Everything in this house has a story,” explains Racheline. “The white abstract painting

by Renouf I discovered in a gallery in Arles. It’s my favourite piece. I fell into conversation with the gallerist and discovered that she and I had distant family connections. Another treasured piece is a Paul Roberts handled raku pot. “I’d seen it in a book about Roberts’ work, and one day it appeared in an auction catalogue. It was serendipity. We finally found each other!”

It comes as some surprise to learn that Racheline started her interior design business by mistake. “I was working for Browns fashion, in the Jil Sander shop, but I always had a passion for interior design. A surveyor I knew encouraged me to do up a flat in Montagu Square, and I went on to work for a property company. After that, I started taking on projects in north London.”

So how would Racheline describe her design ethos? “You should be able to put your own things into a design without destroying its integrity,” she explains. “I like to leave gaps for clients to fill in themselves – interiors should be able grow with their owners.” It’s a philosophy that’s brought vividly to life in Racheline’s ever-evolving Highgate home.

Stockholm for design lovers In Sweden, great design is a way of life. And where better to experience it than in its stunning capital city, which is having a serious creative moment. Here’s our guide to the highlights WOR DS KA R E N H E A N E Y

Stockholmers proudly refer to their city as skönhet på vatten – “beauty on water”. It’s not hard to see why. Few capitals are as picturepostcard pretty as this Scandinavian gem, with its medieval Old Town, Baroque Royal Palace and Belle Epoque boulevards. But make no mistake, Stockholm is not hidebound by its heritage – behind the historic waterfront lies a dynamic modern capital that just oozes contemporary cool.

Visitors to Stockholm quickly discover that Scandi design isn’t just an aesthetic, it’s a way of life. Clean lines, organic textures and minimal shapes are everywhere you go, from the modest cafés where the locals come for their fika fix (coffee, cake and conversation), to the smartest restaurants and boutiques. It’s hard-wired into the city’s DNA. Even the streetlights (4) are sleek and minimalist.

Square. This former business complex in the heart of the city with its Brutalist 1970s architecture is part of a major regeneration project. The square has become the launchpad for a new breed of lifestyle hotels, including At Six and Hobo, which combine high concept, design-led interiors with communal social areas and creative workspaces.

Downtown Camper (2) is the latest arrival on the block. The hotel describes itself as a “basecamp for urban explorers”; the social areas have the vibe of a trendy hostel (giant hammocks, campfires, a games room), while the rooms are distinctly boutique hotel (minimalist bathrooms, moody lighting and window seat reading nooks). Cleverly marrying urban and rustic, the décor in the lobby pairs concrete with natural wood and active guests can hire kayaks, long boards and bikes from the front desk. If you’d rather kick back and relax, there’s a rooftop wellness area with a sauna disguised as a giant bird’s nest (yes, really) and a heated pool with stunning views of the Stockholm skyline. The adjacent cocktail bar, which serves a light breakfast in the morning, shares the same amazing vista. Definitely worth getting up for.

There’s plenty of inspiration to be had just wandering through the streets, taking in design stores and showrooms. Design House Stockholm has a flagship store on Hamngatan, a few minutes’

walk from Downtown Camper, while Svenskt Tenn on Strandvägen is a treasure trove of iconic textiles

by Josef Frank. Designtorget is a crucible for Swedish design talent; up-and-coming Swedish designers submit designs to a monthly jury, who decide which ones will be stocked in 11 stores around the country. Stockholm has three Designtorget, stocking a range of witty, clever designs, the largest is in Kungsgatan, which is just around the corner from Brunkebergstorg Square.

Bolon Lab Store (3) on Birger Jarlsgatan is a next-generation design showroom that has become a meeting place for designers, architects and enthusiasts. Bolon, a traditional weaving company, creates trend-setting flooring and rugs, collaborating with high profile names such as Missoni. For a more laid-back vibe, check out the Hem Design Studio (7) in Eastmansvägen. This independent design studio brings a fresh twist to minimalist furniture, accessories and lighting. Serious design hounds should seek out the Sthlm Design District on the island of Södermalm, where you’ll find around 30 under-the-radar Swedish furniture and textile brands.

No city break would be complete without visiting a couple of museums. Your first port of call should be the island of Skeppsholmen, just across the water from the Royal Palace, where you’ll find not one, but three stunning collections. ArkDes (5) is Sweden’s national centre for architecture and design, it hosts regular exhibitions but also serves as a “place of research, study and debate about how we will live in

the future”. Next door, with jaw-dropping views of the water and the city, is the Moderna Museet. There’s an impressive collection of modern art, covering 1900 to the present day, and a fabulous sculpture garden with some eye-catching large-scale works by Alexander Calder. Down on the waterfront, Fotografiska is a centre for contemporary photography offering world-class exhibitions, workshops and courses.

Sweden has a particularly strong tradition of furniture making (all those pine forests!), a craft that is celebrated in the recently opened Möbeldesignmuseum (Museum of Furniture Studies) (6). The location takes a little finding – a warehouse on the commercial docks (seriously cool) – but the trip is worth it. Based on the private collection of designer/architects Kersti Sandin and Lars Bülow, the warehouse is home to 700 pieces of furniture from distinguished Nordic and international designers, spanning the late 1800s to the present day.

The current exhibition is a love letter to chairs – expect to see design icons like Arne Jacobsen’s Egg Chair and Marcel Breuer’s Wassily Chair.

If you fancy taking all your design inspiration in one big hit, Stockholm hosts its own Design Week in February every year. Coinciding with the Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair, it draws the big names in the design world to the capital. The city joins in with light and media installations and special events in stores, hotels and restaurants. But if you don’t fancy braving the February cold, Stockholm has plenty to delight design lovers all year round.

HAMPSTEAD GARDEN SUBURB Called the “Suburb” by locals, this tranquil north west London enclave was founded in 1907 thanks to the work of philanthropist Dame Henrietta Barnett. She aimed to save part of Hampstead Heath from development and create a healthy and beautiful place for people of all classes to live.

Today, the area’s aesthetics are protected by the Hampstead Garden Suburb Trust. The charming layout is widely recognised as one of the finest examples of twentieth century town planning, with its mix of gently curving roads, little closes and grand vistas designed by the architect Raymond Unwin. Popular with families for its excellent schools and abundance of green spaces – Big Wood, Little Wood, Golders Hill Park and Lyttelton Playing Fields are particularly notable – it exudes that village feel. I usually start by giving my unkempt eyebrows some much needed TLC. I book regular 72

threading appointments at Fringe and sometimes I’ll treat myself to a Dermalogica facial, too – it’s the perfect antidote to the stress of the shop. After this heavy work, I’m usually quite peckish, so I’ll take a trip to Zushi; their selection of fresh sushi is acclaimed for being some of the best in London. I’d like to think I burn off the calories as hard as I can, and one of the ways I do this is by trying to fit in a class at either Pilates by the Green or Raise the Barre. Down the road, there is a speciality grocery store called Bekem’s – it’s the only

place I’ve found that sells guavas, passionfruit and fresh börek alongside a wealth of goodies for the pantry. Amber Rose is my second home and at this point I’m usually feeling pretty homesick, so I’ll make my way back to the shop to prep for the next day.

The Suburb is a unique place, with more small businesses here than anywhere else in London, so it’s great to be contributing to it, and to be a part of such a close-knit community.

DID YOU KNOW? Hoop Lane, NW11, is home to London’s first ever crematorium.

Having opened in 1902, it is one of the oldest crematoriums in Britain. A number of famous people, including Sigmund Freud, Bram Stoker and Amy Winehouse have been cremated there.

The crematorium is a redbrick building, which was built in stages as money became available, and was designed in the Lombardic style by Sir Ernest George and Alfred Yeates. The gardens are Grade I listed and were laid out by William Robinson, who was famous at the time for championing wild gardening.

The young ones A year is a long time when you’re four. So it’s no surprise that an August-born four-year-old may not have the motor skills of a classmate who turns five in September. But while children born between 1 April and 31 August will soon be able to defer a year, the change has yet to happen. And we don’t know if, or how, the private sector might respond.

So what options do you currently have if your child is young in their year? “If your child’s birthday is at the end of August, it’s possible that a school might let them join later,” says Lucy Watts, an educational consultant at Ivy Education. “But that tends to happen when the child has both a summer birthday and a specific learning need. Otherwise, parents are better off letting the child start school and addressing any issues each year.”

Lucy has seven tips for supporting a summer-born child:

1. Ask your child’s prospective school for its policy on this topic.

Does it divide the children by age, or have a spread of birthdays in each class? Does it offer a couple of half

days a week for young children in the first term?

2. Don’t underestimate what your child can do. A lot of summerborn children are ready to move from nursery to a more structured learning environment.

3. Help your child to learn the basics, such as their letters and numbers. This will give them a good foundation on which to build.

4. Get to know the curriculum and work with individual teachers to support your child. This could be help from you, a tutor or both.

5. Think about the environment: if your child isn’t ready for a larger setting at eight years old, a small middle school could suit them.

Some schools also age-weight their 8+ exam papers.

6. Look ahead. If you’re considering holding your child back, make sure you discuss it with the senior schools. Some insist children are 13 when they join.

7. If your child gets held back, look at how the school structures its classes. You don’t want them to feel left behind or that they’ve done anything wrong. (ivyeducation.co.uk)

5 ways to future-proof your kitchen If your dream kitchen is ‘broken-plan’, with metal finishes and dark cabinets, you’re bang on trend. But what if you fit it today, then fall out of love with it in five years?

“Trends do change,” says Sofia Bune Strandh, CEO of Sola Kitchens. “Dark shades have been around for a few years, for example, but I think light ones will be back soon. And you may love brass doors now, but you could feel very different in the future. You don’t want to spend £40-50,000 on a kitchen then have to completely replace it.”

The key is to ask yourself whether you’re likely to tire of your chosen style, says Sofia – then make sure you can change aspects of the design. Here are her tips for how to do it.

1. Be subtle. If you use fashionable finishes sparingly – for example, a copper splash back or section of worktop – you’ll be able to

live with them for longer. If not, they’re easy to swap.

2. Think ahead. If you want your metal doors to be shiny in three years, you’ll need a lacquered or waxed finish. But if you want them to age naturally, you’ll need to leave them untreated.

Whatever your vision, tell your kitchen designer upfront.

3. Give yourself options. We use brass and copper doors on our standard cupboards, so clients can change them further down the line. We also recommend paying the extra £3-5,000 for hand-painted units, so you can transform your kitchen at any time.

4. Break up your space with something replaceable. Open-plan

is still popular. But we’re starting to see people use doors to divide up the room, such as steel or aluminium Crittall doors. These let in the light and are easy to change if you get fed up.

5. Avoid false economies.

Clients often want to put high-end appliances and worktops on to cheaper cabinets. But when the cabinets start to break, you can’t easily change them. If you want to save money, you’re better off spending more on good-quality cabinets and less on the worktop and appliances. That way, you can always repaint the doors and buy new appliances for a completely fresh look. solakitchens.com

How did you get into architecture?

I remember drawing from a very young age and going to galleries with my mother. My art teacher wanted me to go to art school but I just had a hunch about the world of architecture and its magic.

What can you offer clients that others can’t?

We listen. I often draw and listen at the same time. Potential clients get drawn into the sketch, which promotes good discourse. We try to make each design unique to each client and will always try to find an angle on getting planning approval.

What’s your design ethos?

To make delightful, well-crafted spaces that reflect the client’s needs.

Describe your dream project Designing a religious building or boutique hotel.

What would you say to a client who wants to future-proof their kitchen?

Choose classic materials that won’t date. This way, you’ll grow into and with the space.

What advice would you give to someone looking for an architect?

People relate to people. A potential client needs to ‘click’ with their designer; they need to feel comfortable. Arriving in my orange leather jacket on a scooter lightens things up.

Q. I’m working overseas for two years and want to let my home while I’m away. What advice would you give?

A. If you’re moving overseas and letting your property, it is vital you choose the right ARLA qualified agent on a sole agency basis, and to go for the management service. I would recommend an agent with a management team based locally, who can deal with issues promptly and visit the property as needed. This will give you the best possible chance of retaining a tenant throughout your two years abroad – having a void period and needing to remarket will be costly. In order to achieve the best possible rent, my advice would be to make sure the property is presented in its best possible light – clutter free and refreshed as necessary.

Locally, Manchester Square, further afield, Chiswick High Street.
