I catch up with Katherine a couple of days after our cover shoot.

“It was such a joy to be able to do that and not be in continuity for anything else,” she exclaims, happily. “Usually, I’ve kind of got my hair a certain way because I am in the middle of shooting something, or I’m about to shoot something. And then it never quite feels like me… So, actually, it is probably one of the few shoots I have ever done where it is really feels like me. With my choice of hair – which, in this case, is pink!”

Having made her name on the Coronation Street cobbles playing barmaid Becky McDonald between 2006 and 2012, the Yorkshire-born actress has gone on to roles in an impressive mix of television projects, including hit shows Mr Selfridge, Happy Valley, The Night Manager, Gentleman Jack, Liar and, most recently, Criminal. Yet despite a CV bursting with blockbusters, she says that she is rarely recognised – and she couldn’t be happier about that. “I want to be able to represent real life, and I want audiences to watch and not think that it is me, but to really believe the character,” she explains. “Which is also why I am quite private, because I feel like if people know me too well, they will just see me as Katherine Kelly, and not as the role that I am in. I want them to forget that it is Katherine Kelly within the first two minutes.”

It helps, then, in her quest to avoid playing to type, that when it comes to taking on new work, Katherine is drawn to the different. “I am always attracted to things that haven’t been seen before,” she reveals. “I am lucky that I get sent a lot of scripts where I think, yeah, I haven’t embarked on this sort of thing before, or for a long time, and yeah, I really want to do that.

I am a bit of a chameleon – I don’t get recognised from one role to the other, which I love. I embrace the chameleon,” she laughs.

Her latest role is the lead in ITV’s psychological thriller, Innocent. Unusually, rather than following on from the first, this second series features a whole new cast of characters and is set in a different location. The story focuses on the plight of English teacher Sally Wright, who has just been released from prison after serving five years for a murder she did not commit.

“Sally is a character that I feel I haven’t played before. And also, I don’t think I have really seen her so much,” Katherine tells me.

“She is quite a vulnerable character, who has been deeply, deeply traumatised – as you would be, having gone through what she does. You find out within the first few minutes that she is indeed innocent of a crime that she served five years in prison for. And that was for the murder of one of her students. Also,

“I was never judgemental, but I am not at all now.

I think being an actor gives you an understanding and an empathy…” there are rumours, and they are no more than rumours because she was never charged with it, but there are rumours that she was having a sexual relationship with him.”

There is an element of whodunnit running through the series, because the police, having originally convicted the wrong person, are now hot on the trail trying to find who actually did kill this young boy. But Katherine tells me that though Sally does try to help – she wants to know who did it and is keen to offer her assistance – her personal story concentrates on the struggles she faces trying to reintegrate back into her old life.

“Her journey is about finding her way back to life, integrating herself back into society and finding her freedom again at a time when we are not just tried by the jury, but we are also tried by the press. And the rumours are still strong in the village that she comes from, so she finds it surprisingly hard to be accepted again. I found it was really beautifully written and I was really interested in playing it.”

Sally’s story is shocking, and Katherine says that she wanted viewers to be able to relate to it. “What happens to her is a complete tragedy, but it was important to me that she didn’t feel far removed,” she explains. “I really wanted Sally to feel

already been to university and were older – and we were up at Gower Street, where RADA is, and my friend had already been in London for three years, and she bumped into somebody she knew, and I thought, oh as if you ever bump into somebody in London. You don’t ever bump into somebody in London, it’s too big! And then, of course, of course you do…” she laughs, recalling her naivety.

There was no better place than RADA to launch her career.

“When you train at a classical drama school you tend to go into theatre first, so you have to have a huge casting range to get the parts,” Katherine tells me. “Brilliantly, you get your leading part, but also, you have to be ready to play a servant, and that was always the thing that got me the gig, when it was between me and a couple of others. It was like, well, she can do the other bits as well. And I have realised that I really just love variety, that’s what my passion is about acting. I don’t just mean variety of character, but variety of everything. You know, I love working across all mediums – television, radio, theatre, film…”

It is this love of variety that she has built her career on.

“I am lucky, I get sent lots of scripts for lots and lots of different parts, and lots of different casting directors and directors see me in very different ways, and I am really very grateful for that, because, as I say, it is the variety that I enjoy,” she smiles. Indeed, until recently, those scripts have translated into an almost constant stream of parts, but Katherine tells me that she has been rethinking the way that she works. “I was going from set to set, and at some points I was filming by day and doing theatre by night, and I felt like I wasn’t in real life enough to represent real life,” she muses. “I remember once, being stood at a bar in a drama and thinking, God, I don’t really know what the drink is that everyone is having at the moment. Prosecco, or gin, or…

And I thought, God, I have basically spent the last 12 months either being in a canteen on set, or, at the other extreme, on a red carpet, and that bothered me. Because I want to be able to represent real life.”

This, coupled with a desire to spend more time with her children – she has two young daughters, Orla and Rose – has led her to be a little more selective when it comes to taking on work. “When they were younger, I just used to take them along on jobs with me, but school is definitely a factor, because, inevitably, usually, this job takes you away,” Katherine tells me.

“I love motherhood as much as I love my job, and I wouldn’t want one without the other. If that’s the case, you need to try and find a balance.”

Which isn’t to say that she’s not currently working. “Where I find myself in terms of career, I have got the second series Gentleman Jack, which I am filming at the moment, and I am just putting the finishing touches to a podcast drama that is called Curl up and D.I., which is an absurdist comedy. And I haven’t done comedy for a while. So that is what I am on with at the moment. So, busy, but nice busy.” On which note, other commitments mean she has to dash. “I think I live life at 100 miles an hour, I fit as much as I can into a day – as much as I try to tell myself not to, I just can’t help it. I have this huge thirst for life, and don’t like to waste a moment,” she says, sheepishly. It is nothing to apologise for.

like every woman. That anybody could associate with her.

You either feel like she could be you, or somebody close to you.”

For Katherine, empathy and acting have come hand in hand.

“I was never really judgemental, but I am not at all now,” she tells me. “I think being an actor gives you an understanding and an empathy and a kindness to human beings, actually.

And the more I do it, the more I dig into that.”

I wonder what originally attracted her to acting?

“Everything about me, when I look back at myself as a child, was all about my imagination,” she recalls. “It was fierce.

I had a huge imagination, and these two younger brothers who were quite happy to go along with it!”

More than that, she says that performance was in her blood.

“My parents did the clubs before I was born: my mum was a great singer, and my dad a musician, and a singer, and he had the chat as well –so he did a lot of comedy and that sort of thing,” Katherine reveals. “They didn’t want that lifestyle with young kids though, so they did amateur dramatics when we came along. There was no youth theatre where I grew up, and I didn’t do any drama at school either, but myself and my brothers used to tag along with them to rehearsals. Some of my earliest memories are running around theatres. It was always something the family enjoyed – my nan would do costumes and my grandad would do lighting. It was just what we liked doing – some people like to go and play tennis, but we did this,” she recalls, fondly.

The idea of doing it professionally didn’t even occur to Katherine until much later on, though. “I didn’t know any professional actors. I used to look at TV and think, I don’t know how you would ever get on television. So, it was quite an abstract thing, doing it as a job, even though it was definitely in my nature,” she explains. “When everybody was thinking about what they were going to do at university, my dad randomly brought back this pamphlet from the job centre about drama schools, and I just couldn’t believe it, that you could actually do drama all day long. And learn.”

She recalls taking “a punt” and applying for RADA and a couple of the other drama schools in London – the idea of being anywhere but here never even occurred to her. “I’d been to London, because my parents loved it,” she remembers. “We used to go down to the theatre, and I think they had their honeymoon here, so to me, London was like the destination,” she laughs.

She had no expectation that her application would be successful, though. “I don’t think I appreciated the enormity of it at the time, because I just did it and I was quite prepared to not be very good,” she admits. “It’s like playing football on your own, you know, kicking a ball about by yourself your whole childhood and being like, well, the adults say I’m alright at it, but I have no idea, I’ve never played against anybody my own age. And suddenly you find yourself on a pitch and you are quite prepared that you are going to be dreadful. But you might be amazing… you just never know, because you have never been in that arena before…” In fact, the adults were on to something, she was alright, better than that, in fact – against the odds she was accepted to study at RADA aged 18.

And it was all she dreamt it would be. “I completely fell in love with London,” she admits. “I remember being with a friend – there were only about five of us who were 18, the rest had

Maintaining family wellbeing amid changing routines

The pandemic has blurred the divisions between work and home, and while this has its benefits, it is important to protect your wellbeing while working from home, say the experts at Bupa Global

Children’s concerns about changing routines, busy schedules, exams or rumours from the playground shouldn’t be dismissed.

For parents who recognise signs of stress and anxiety, early intervention is key. Avoid their bedroom and find a neutral space – such as an early evening walk – to open up the conversation.

Keep calm and carry on With diaries gradually filling up, it’s understandable that we might have mixed feelings about the return to normality – joy at the prospect of catching up with friends, but unease at the idea of crowds of people. In preparation for life post-lockdown, we caught up with Charlène Gisèle, primal health coach and professional biohacker, to discover her tips for managing stress and anxiety. She says: “The most effective way to keep calm whilst we gear up for re-opening is to look inwards. Here are some practical techniques for doing this.”

Exposure therapy When it comes to re-socialising, especially around large groups, exposure therapy, whereby you start small and take baby steps to reintegration, is the best approach to avoid feeling overwhelmed and anxious. Choose one friend you know you’ll be comfortable around and have an extended walk in a park. Then incrementally build up to a couple of friends and simultaneously ask yourself if the thought of being around more people still makes you anxious? If the answer is yes, just dial it back until you feel ready to increase the numbers again. This ‘regress to progress’ approach is the underlying principle of exposure therapy.

Body scans to go introspective A great way to bring about a deep sense of calm is to practise the ancient yogi technique of body scanning and visualisation, where you take a journey in your mind’s eye away from the

external world and into your own body. With closed eyes, picture your feet, methodically move up to legs, belly, chest, shoulders and head. Try to go deeper – connect with your blood circulation, hear your heartbeat, feel your breath… This will instantly bring you into the present if you find yourself worrying about the future.

Practise conscious breathing Learning to do rounds of conscious breathing – where you’re aware of when you inhale and exhale – throughout the day is one of the fastest and most powerful ways to instantly activate the parasympathetic nervous system and reduce the physical symptoms of stress and anxiety.

The box breathing technique is an incredibly powerful stress reliever. Breathe in for four counts. Hold for four. Exhale for four. Then hold again for four. And repeat for four minutes or until calm returns.

Immerse yourself in nature Another powerful tool to help manage your wellbeing is to spend more time in nature.

The change of scenery can really help to reduce stress levels as it takes you outside of your thoughts, even for just a short time. Nature can be a challenge in London, but there are parks aplenty and you don’t need lots of space. Just find a patch of grass and take a seat. Or even better, take your shoes off on grass to benefit from the naturally calming effect of ‘earthing’ and connecting with yourself.

Spinach, leek and cheese pie Looking for something to keep the kids busy this half term?

Yes, we know, the Easter holidays feel but a moment ago – have they actually been in school at all this year? We’re planning to get the little folk helping in the kitchen, sorting dinner and entertainment in one. And there’s nobody better to ask for inspiration on that front than Maggie Bolger of b-together, St. John’s Wood’s new family hub. Here, she shares a personal family favourite.

INGREDIENTS

Place the veg mix back in the cooking pan (to save on washing up).

Crumble the feta and add to the veg mix, along with the grated cheddar. Combine these ingredients and season with salt and pepper to taste – the cheese will add saltiness, METHOD so it’s a good idea to taste first.

All fired up Hot news: Campfire, an outdoor fire pit restaurant and taproom at Two Tribes Brewery’s Kings Cross home has just opened. Campfire’s initial food residents are From The Ashes BBQ, a trio of chefs who came together in the midst of lockdown, working with top farmers up and down the country to create one of London’s most exciting new barbecue restaurants. Frank Fellows, Martin Anderson and Curtis Bell have designed a special menu which includes the irresistible sounding nduja ‘Del Piero’ doughnuts filled with smoked pork, house made chilli jam, BBQ sauce and nduja; and for dessert, fire pit ‘chocolate’ profiteroles covered with a chocolate beer sauce made with Two Tribes Symphony cocoa and sea salt stout.

For interiors writer Geraldine James, a house simply isn’t a home without a canine companion

hat makes a house a home? For some it’s calming décor, for others it’s a vibrant family kitchen… For Geraldine, it’s the pitter patter of tiny paws. “It was my daughter who, after years of grinding me down, persuaded me to get a dog. I’ve never looked back and will always have a dog in my life now,” she smiles. “He sits at my feet when I’m writing, he sleeps on the end of my bed, and he sits on the back of the sofa guarding our home from intruders… He’s always getting photographed!”

Eddie, a proud Battersea rescue dog named after his famous lookalike in Frasier, is one of the beloved pooches featured in Geraldine’s recently published book, Cool Dogs, Cool Homes. Inviting us to snoop around some inspirational abodes – and meet the four-legged friends who guard them – Geraldine shows us how a canine companion can fit right into a modern home without having to sacrifice on style. There’s even a chapter titled Design Dogs, in which high profile designers such as Abigail Ahern and Nikki Tibbles show us their beautifully curated but nonetheless dog-friendly residences.

Geraldine’s own apartment, a masterclass in restrained glamour with its wealth of natural textures and mono accents, takes up the ground floor of a large Victorian semi. With a separate entranceway, high ceilings, two double bedrooms and a sizable kitchen/diner, she describes it as having “a rare sense of space”. “I was attracted to it initially because of the size.

So many Victorian houses are small, but there are only four houses of this size in the street. The others, although a mixture of styles, are of a more conventional size,” she says.

Despite its pleasing footprint, the flat has seen some extensive improvement work in the 25 years that Geraldine has lived here. This includes replacing period features that had been removed. Architecturally sympathetic coving, internal doors and a huge marble fire surround were lovingly reinstalled. More recently, Geraldine has given her bathroom a makeover, reclaiming space from an old airing cupboard and significantly extending it to include a walk-in shower. She has also widened the doors to the garden and created further double doors into the sheltered area at

the side of the kitchen – now a dream indoor/outdoor space complete with dining table, a painted bench with cosy scatter cushions, an assortment of vintage chairs, climbing jasmine and vine leaves overhead. “This really came about when my neighbour built an extension using lovely bricks,” she says. “It then made sense to create an outdoor covered dining area using the space. It is one of the best things I’ve done.”

Along with Geraldine’s indoor dining table, the one outside came from an antiques fair and has been in her possession for years. When restrictions allow her, procurement of interesting furniture pieces and accessories takes her across Europe. “I love shopping in the Sablon in Belgium to buy mid-century furniture. My dining chairs come from there,” she reveals. “Pezenas in south west France has over 50 antique shops, I love going there and I never return empty handed. And I love Fornasetti in Milan for really mad quirky items, and Merci in Paris for glass and ceramics. I’ve broken so much returning on the Eurostar over the years,” she laughs. “And I’ve collected textiles from everywhere: African mud cloth from Brussels, Hungarian linen sheets from Kempton Antiques, cushions from Anthropologie and Soho Home…” It is good old Ikea for basics, though. Geraldine has recently added two glazed front cabinets to the kitchen, which she calls “a real game changer.”

Although an avid collector, there is a discipline to Geraldine’s interiors shopping habits and the way in which she gives her favourite pieces space to breathe – the apartment is anything but cluttered. “I have never had a look in mind and mostly what happens is that it evolves and I drift from one aesthetic seamlessly to another,” she says. “I used to like a much more

decorated aesthetic, but now I instinctively want a pared back look and I find myself stripping back, giving things away or loaning things.” Artwork features heavily in the flat, too, all lovingly curated, of course: “Some of my favourite items I’ve collected include an oil painting of a couple of Flamenco dancers, which I bought at the Montpellier antiques fair; a white linen dress oil painting in my bedroom, painted by my good friend Richard Nott; and a huge oil painting in my kitchen of a tutu in turquoise and green, painted and gifted to me by Laurence Amélie. “It is so striking and adds so much to any room – I have moved it around my flat.”

Like so many of us, Geraldine’s lockdown experience has been a mixed one: “Family visits were on the doorstep, in fact my granddaughter had her first birthday on the doorstep,” she recalls. “But it’s also true that we’ve reconnected with our homes. I used the first lockdown to really get to grips with home tasks I’d been meaning to do. I’ve spent time making small changes, getting better organised, replacing an old rug...” Without question, Geraldine’s commodious kitchen/dining space, which spills out into the garden, proved a godsend: “It really came into its own last year when we were allowed six friends outside,” she says. “I have lights outside and plenty of seating. When lit in the summer with all the doors open it’s a great space, perfect for parties. It’s magical… And of course Eddie’s favourite place is wherever I am – apart from when dark falls, then he’s in the garden for hours hunting foxes.”

Natural glamour Litta was tasked with renewing the living room of this Hampstead home (top right). The client wanted a warm and elegant space. Going against her usual Scandi leaning towards bright white walls, the designer plumped for a warm, dark and creamy paint colour. The earthy tone is contrasted beautifully with soft white voiles, while a striking black marble coffee table brings a dose of glamour to the natural palette. The look is finished with imposing house plants and a playfully oversized mid-century lampshade overhead.

Breathing space As much at home kitting out a sprawling mansion as she is decorating a studio apartment,

there’s no job too small for Litta – and this one bed London flat (right) is a stylish case in point. Introducing Heathside Fellowship For the first time ever, Heathside School will welcome GCSE students this year, headteacher Katherine Vintiner explains why they will be taking an innovative approach to learning in the senior school

eathside School Hampstead is a vibrant and nurturing school for children from age two. Recently granted permission from the Department for Education has allowed the school to extend the upper age range of pupils to 16 for the first time this year. Headteacher Katherine Vintiner believes that simply offering students a range of GCSEs is not enough though, so the school has found a new way to ensure that all students achieve their best possible outcomes – the Heathside Fellowship.

“The true meaning of education is to bring forth what is within, and we have developed the Heathside Fellowship with that firmly in mind,” Katherine tells us. “The Fellowship is a five-pronged approach to education that enables students to gain experience and qualifications in a wide range of areas. The purpose of the Fellowship is to equip Heathside students for their future in a rapidly changing world. The five elements – Scholarship, Pre-cognition, Autonomy, Citizenship and Entrepreneurship – blend to give each student experiences that allow them to play to their strengths and interests.”

First and foremost come academic qualifications: Scholarship. Heathside is a non-academically selective school, but academic standards are high.

Focus is not only on the GCSE subjects but scholarship itself; how to learn, think critically and build confidence. By helping every student learn to learn, the school gives them every possibility to achieve the best results they can.

Adapting to change For Hampstead-based St. Anthony’s School for Boys, the past year has presented its unique challenges, but the response from pupils has consistently exceeded expectations, says Chris Kearns, Deputy Head, Academic

O

ne thing that the last year, with its extended periods of remote learning, has taught us, is just how adaptable young people are.

In the first lockdown, schools immediately focused on continuing to deliver the usual standard of curriculum, incorporating the stretch, challenge and support that pupils were accustomed to finding in the physical classroom.

The challenges presented by this are well documented, and Chris Kearns, Deputy Head, Academic at St. Anthony’s School for Boys agrees that it was tough at times. “Keeping

boys engaged and motivated was no mean feat, but our excellent teaching and support staff were able to rise to the challenge with a great deal of creativity, flexibility and, crucially, lots of empathy.”

As adults we are all too well aware of the difficulties that sitting behind a screen and remaining focused for prolonged periods of time can present; it is a challenge that is amplified for youngsters, who need to channel a mentality of selfdiscipline and routine, which can be both daunting and, at times, rather draining. “We were delighted at how well the boys rose to the challenge,” Chris says. “Their resilience and determination shone through in all that they did. Their admirable work ethic and good humour meant that we were able to deliver a successful remote programme, with both academic progress and pastoral wellbeing at its heart – the key principles underpinning our approach at St. Anthony’s.”

Furthermore, he explains, the transition into remote learning mark two was seamless, and it quickly became evident that the boys’ digital literacy skills had improved exponentially. Skills which many adults employ in the world of work became the new normal.

Boys were clearly adept in utilising a range of platforms to collaborate and communicate with each other and their teachers. “Things like screen sharing, presenting on TEAMs and ‘version control’ had become second nature to St. Anthony’s pupils. Work which pupils turned in demonstrated their improved ability to manipulate documents and coedit in a creative and collaborative manner. Their communication was deliberate and concise and ‘break out rooms’ became a popular option for learning,” Chris tells us. Indeed, feedback from class teachers, work scrutiny and conversations with the boys themselves have indicated that far from slowing down, several aspects of learning and progress actually accelerated during remote teaching. The important thing now of course is to maintain this momentum.

The big take-away for senior leaders overseeing pupils’ learning is that remote learning has unearthed a wealth of opportunities which must not be forgotten as a semblance of normality resumes.

Indeed, many elements of learning were enhanced, rather than denigrated by moving online.

are determined to translate into the normal day-to-day delivery of the curriculum. Incorporating the use of platforms such as One-Note into daily teaching is just one example of this. “We are steadfast in our determination that the lessons of online learning, and the enhancements to be gained will form one of our school’s key priorities moving forward. We take this so seriously that we have already procured personal Surface Gos for all boys in Years 7 and 8, as a means of integrating digital and traditional methods both in the classroom and for prep,” Chris explains.

Preparing boys for the next stage, senior school and beyond, is a responsibility that the school takes extremely seriously, not least because many of the digitally-based careers the boys will likely enter are yet to be created! “The prolonged period of remote learning has had a positive impact in many respects, and it is this legacy which we will be incorporating into our ‘new educational normal’ as face-to-face teaching resumes, albeit not as we knew it!” Chris concludes.

Testing times

In an unusual year, St. Anthony’s School for Girls celebrates another set of outstanding 11+ results

T

he past year has been universally challenging, but particularly so for our young people, who have endured school closures and long periods isolated from friends and extended family. Celebrating successes during this period is more important than ever, then. One group of students who did not allow the events of the past 12 months to stand in their way are the year 6 girls at St. Anthony’s School for Girls, who achieved fantastic results in their 11+ – receiving offers for places at London’s top independent schools, and being awarded major academic scholarships.

With the school being closed twice because of national lockdowns, normality was substantially disrupted when it came to this year’s cohort preparing for the 11+. The lockdowns and restrictions also resulted in numerous changes to the examination format; the Consortium schools, being unable to host 11+ testing in person, arranged for all candidates to complete computerised ISEB tests. Furthermore, the interview process was altered, with scheduled online interviews taking the place of the regular school-based ones. But the girls at St Anthony’s navigated all of these unexpected changes with calmness and confidence.

They went on to receive offers at City of London, North London Collegiate, South Hampstead High, Channing, Highgate, Mill Hill, Francis Holland, Queen’s College, Queenswood, Northwood, St. Margaret’s and St. Helen’s. This is true testament to the hard work, dedication

and commitment they demonstrated while completing the St. Anthony’s 18-month 11+ curriculum, a roadmap to success for all the girls.

Meet the locals David Moore Owner, Pied à Terre Living in Bloomsbury, I walk to work in Fitzrovia, passing through Russell and Bedford Squares and past the British Museum. I have to pinch myself – what a commute! I head up Tottenham Court Road towards Warren Street for a morning coffee at Miel Bakery – they serve truly amazing pastries, very much worth the detour. I sit in Fitzroy Square to drink my coffee, grabbing a few quiet moments before the start of another busy day at the restaurant on Charlotte Street.

If the kids are with me, we might pop into Pollocks Toy Museum on Scala Street, or stop for a snack from Homeslice on Wells Street. The kids cannot wait for the opening of Where the Pancakes Are, a new concept for Charlotte Street. My great pal Andrew Jose at No.1 Charlotte St (we’ve been neighbours on the street for 30 years) used to cut my hair (say no more!). Now the rest of the family go there instead. A guilty pleasure is to grab fish and chips from Gigs on Tottenham Street and sit in Crabtree Fields behind Pied à Terre.

An unlikely bolthole for an evening glass of wine is Cleveland Street, to the west of Fitzroy Square, in the shadow of the BT Tower – it is home to several great places, including The Remedy Wine Bar Shop & Kitchen and the Fitzroy Wine Cellar & Kitchen. A sneaky cocktail at the London Cocktail Club on Goodge Street is always fun, or a cooling ale at the Duke of York on Rathbone Street.

Charlotte Street is a very famous restaurant street, full of eateries including Norma and ROKA. Of course, my favourite spot is Michelinstarred Pied à Terre – in the famous words of Mandy Rice Davies, I would say that wouldn’t I, but it has been my second home for 30 years on this fantastic street in Fitzrovia.
