May 2021
The definitive guide to London living Editor’s letter Liz Skone James Summer is on the way and things feel more normal with every letter I write to you. I can’t tell you how pleased I am to have a full spread of events on our Culture pages. And there are new restaurant openings on our Food pages. It’s been a long while since either of those things last happened... If you’re welcoming guests back this month, you’ll want things to look their best, so we’ve prepared a guide to creating the ultimate space for al fresco entertaining. Of course, the idea of coming back to life might make you feel a little uneasy, and that’s totally understandable after what we’ve all been through. If that’s you, we’ve got some great tips on managing stress and anxiety in our Style & Wellbeing section. Coming back to life, though in an altogether different way, is the theme of cover star Katherine Kelly’s latest role. She tells us all about the gripping new ITV series of Innocent, and explains why her greatest aim as an actor is to go through life without being recognised (the pink hair helps!). Elsewhere in the issue, we’ve got the usual property market news – things are looking good in the Capital – and we explore Fitzrovia, one of our favourite central neighbourhoods. That should keep you busy until next time, when things promise to be even better!

Doctor Who: Time Fracture From 26 May, Immersive|LDN
In 2021 nostalgia and escapism are not only forgiven but positively encouraged – and this is an indulgent slice of both. Alongside BBC Studios, writer Daniel Dingsdale and director Tom Maller take us on an adventure into the multifaceted worlds of the Time Lord. As with any immersive theatre of this ilk, we’ll find ourselves in the centre of the action – and in this case, at the heart of the original story. We begin in 1940 at the height of the Blitz. A weapon of unknown origin has destroyed a small corner of Mayfair and simultaneously opened up a rift in space and time. With the Doctor at the helm, we’re taken on a mission to save the universe as we know it, encountering daleks, cybermen and weeping angels along the way – only this time there’ll be no sofa to hide behind.

I catch up with Katherine a couple of days after our cover shoot. “It was such a joy to be able to do that and not be in continuity for anything else,” she exclaims, happily. “Usually, I’ve kind of got my hair a certain way because I am in the middle of shooting something, or I’m about to shoot something. And then it never quite feels like me… So, actually, it is probably one of the few shoots I have ever done where it is really feels like me. With my choice of hair – which, in this case, is pink!” Having made her name on the Coronation Street cobbles playing barmaid Becky McDonald between 2006 and 2012, the Yorkshire-born actress has gone on to roles in an impressive mix of television projects, including hit shows Mr Selfridge, Happy Valley, The Night Manager, Gentleman Jack, Liar and, most recently, Criminal. Yet despite a CV bursting with blockbusters, she says that she is rarely recognised – and she couldn’t be happier about that. “I want to be able to represent real life, and I want audiences to watch and not think that it is me, but to really believe the character,” she explains. “Which is also why I am quite private, because I feel like if people know me too well, they will just see me as Katherine Kelly, and not as the role that I am in. I want them to forget that it is Katherine Kelly within the first two minutes.” It helps, then, in her quest to avoid playing to type, that when it comes to taking on new work, Katherine is drawn to the different. “I am always attracted to things that haven’t been seen before,” she reveals. “I am lucky that I get sent a lot of scripts where I think, yeah, I haven’t embarked on this sort of thing before, or for a long time, and yeah, I really want to do that. I am a bit of a chameleon – I don’t get recognised from one role to the other, which I love. I embrace the chameleon,” she laughs. Her latest role is the lead in ITV’s psychological thriller, Innocent. Unusually, rather than following on from the first, this second series features a whole new cast of characters and is set in a different location. The story focuses on the plight of English teacher Sally Wright, who has just been released from prison after serving five years for a murder she did not commit. “Sally is a character that I feel I haven’t played before. And also, I don’t think I have really seen her so much,” Katherine tells me. “She is quite a vulnerable character, who has been deeply, deeply traumatised – as you would be, having gone through what she does. You find out within the first few minutes that she is indeed innocent of a crime that she served five years in prison for. And that was for the murder of one of her students. Also,
“I was never judgemental, but I am not at all now. I think being an actor gives you an understanding and an empathy…” there are rumours, and they are no more than rumours because she was never charged with it, but there are rumours that she was having a sexual relationship with him.” There is an element of whodunnit running through the series, because the police, having originally convicted the wrong person, are now hot on the trail trying to find who actually did kill this young boy. But Katherine tells me that though Sally does try to help – she wants to know who did it and is keen to offer her assistance – her personal story concentrates on the struggles she faces trying to reintegrate back into her old life. “Her journey is about finding her way back to life, integrating herself back into society and finding her freedom again at a time when we are not just tried by the jury, but we are also tried by the press. And the rumours are still strong in the village that she comes from, so she finds it surprisingly hard to be accepted again. I found it was really beautifully written and I was really interested in playing it.” Sally’s story is shocking, and Katherine says that she wanted viewers to be able to relate to it. “What happens to her is a complete tragedy, but it was important to me that she didn’t feel far removed,” she explains. “I really wanted Sally to feel

already been to university and were older – and we were up at Gower Street, where RADA is, and my friend had already been in London for three years, and she bumped into somebody she knew, and I thought, oh as if you ever bump into somebody in London. You don’t ever bump into somebody in London, it’s too big! And then, of course, of course you do…” she laughs, recalling her naivety. There was no better place than RADA to launch her career. “When you train at a classical drama school you tend to go into theatre first, so you have to have a huge casting range to get the parts,” Katherine tells me. “Brilliantly, you get your leading part, but also, you have to be ready to play a servant, and that was always the thing that got me the gig, when it was between me and a couple of others. It was like, well, she can do the other bits as well. And I have realised that I really just love variety, that’s what my passion is about acting. I don’t just mean variety of character, but variety of everything. You know, I love working across all mediums – television, radio, theatre, film…” It is this love of variety that she has built her career on. “I am lucky, I get sent lots of scripts for lots and lots of different parts, and lots of different casting directors and directors see me in very different ways, and I am really very grateful for that, because, as I say, it is the variety that I enjoy,” she smiles. Indeed, until recently, those scripts have translated into an almost constant stream of parts, but Katherine tells me that she has been rethinking the way that she works. “I was going from set to set, and at some points I was filming by day and doing theatre by night, and I felt like I wasn’t in real life enough to represent real life,” she muses. “I remember once, being stood at a bar in a drama and thinking, God, I don’t really know what the drink is that everyone is having at the moment. Prosecco, or gin, or… And I thought, God, I have basically spent the last 12 months either being in a canteen on set, or, at the other extreme, on a red carpet, and that bothered me. Because I want to be able to represent real life.” This, coupled with a desire to spend more time with her children – she has two young daughters, Orla and Rose – has led her to be a little more selective when it comes to taking on work. “When they were younger, I just used to take them along on jobs with me, but school is definitely a factor, because, inevitably, usually, this job takes you away,” Katherine tells me. “I love motherhood as much as I love my job, and I wouldn’t want one without the other. If that’s the case, you need to try and find a balance.” Which isn’t to say that she’s not currently working. “Where I find myself in terms of career, I have got the second series Gentleman Jack, which I am filming at the moment, and I am just putting the finishing touches to a podcast drama that is called Curl up and D.I., which is an absurdist comedy. And I haven’t done comedy for a while. So that is what I am on with at the moment. So, busy, but nice busy.” On which note, other commitments mean she has to dash. “I think I live life at 100 miles an hour, I fit as much as I can into a day – as much as I try to tell myself not to, I just can’t help it. I have this huge thirst for life, and don’t like to waste a moment,” she says, sheepishly. It is nothing to apologise for. The second series of Innocent is on ITV this month

like every woman. That anybody could associate with her. You either feel like she could be you, or somebody close to you.” For Katherine, empathy and acting have come hand in hand. “I was never really judgemental, but I am not at all now,” she tells me. “I think being an actor gives you an understanding and an empathy and a kindness to human beings, actually. And the more I do it, the more I dig into that.” I wonder what originally attracted her to acting? “Everything about me, when I look back at myself as a child, was all about my imagination,” she recalls. “It was fierce. I had a huge imagination, and these two younger brothers who were quite happy to go along with it!” More than that, she says that performance was in her blood. “My parents did the clubs before I was born: my mum was a great singer, and my dad a musician, and a singer, and he had the chat as well –so he did a lot of comedy and that sort of thing,” Katherine reveals. “They didn’t want that lifestyle with young kids though, so they did amateur dramatics when we came along. There was no youth theatre where I grew up, and I didn’t do any drama at school either, but myself and my brothers used to tag along with them to rehearsals. Some of my earliest memories are running around theatres. It was always something the family enjoyed – my nan would do costumes and my grandad would do lighting. It was just what we liked doing – some people like to go and play tennis, but we did this,” she recalls, fondly. The idea of doing it professionally didn’t even occur to Katherine until much later on, though. “I didn’t know any professional actors. I used to look at TV and think, I don’t know how you would ever get on television. So, it was quite an abstract thing, doing it as a job, even though it was definitely in my nature,” she explains. “When everybody was thinking about what they were going to do at university, my dad randomly brought back this pamphlet from the job centre about drama schools, and I just couldn’t believe it, that you could actually do drama all day long. And learn.” She recalls taking “a punt” and applying for RADA and a couple of the other drama schools in London – the idea of being anywhere but here never even occurred to her. “I’d been to London, because my parents loved it,” she remembers. “We used to go down to the theatre, and I think they had their honeymoon here, so to me, London was like the destination,” she laughs. She had no expectation that her application would be successful, though. “I don’t think I appreciated the enormity of it at the time, because I just did it and I was quite prepared to not be very good,” she admits. “It’s like playing football on your own, you know, kicking a ball about by yourself your whole childhood and being like, well, the adults say I’m alright at it, but I have no idea, I’ve never played against anybody my own age. And suddenly you find yourself on a pitch and you are quite prepared that you are going to be dreadful. But you might be amazing… you just never know, because you have never been in that arena before…” In fact, the adults were on to something, she was alright, better than that, in fact – against the odds she was accepted to study at RADA aged 18. And it was all she dreamt it would be. “I completely fell in love with London,” she admits. “I remember being with a friend – there were only about five of us who were 18, the rest had

Stephen Lindsay Director, Head of North London
I started out at 16 in Hampstead and couldn’t wait to get my feet under a desk to become a negotiator. That was 34 years ago and, since then, there’s been no stopping me. I love being outdoors and meeting new people, as well as the cut and thrust of negotiating; it’s a passion. I was born and bred in north London and have seen so much change since starting out—not least the prices locally. Then, no house was valued over £1 million; today the typical value for properties I personally sell is from £20 million. Having worked in the area for so long, almost all the business comes through recommendations. Despite these big sums, St John’s Wood isn’t showy. It’s become more cosmopolitan over the years, but it’s really driven by families who move here for the excellent schooling and the access to the West End. People buy and they stay. Maintaining family wellbeing amid changing routines
The pandemic has blurred the divisions between work and home, and while this has its benefits, it is important to protect your wellbeing while working from home, say the experts at Bupa Global
Children’s concerns about changing routines, busy schedules, exams or rumours from the playground shouldn’t be dismissed. For parents who recognise signs of stress and anxiety, early intervention is key. Avoid their bedroom and find a neutral space – such as an early evening walk – to open up the conversation. “Be sure to let them properly process the chat,” advises Dr Naveen Puri, Bupa Global Lead Physician, who suggests to “let them know you’re always there if they want to talk to you.” Encourage them to not bottle up their worries, however big or small, and offer them reassurance when they do open up to you.
Assess what is needed for your wellbeing Premium health insurer Bupa Global found in its Executive Wellbeing Index1 that over half of board level global executives do not plan to return to the same fast pace of life following the pandemic. But as people start to return to the office and social calendars fill up, this could be hard to maintain, bringing with it risk of burnout. Working flexibly, working from home more often, or making a distinct separation between work and personal life could be key. For Dr Luke James, Bupa Global’s Medical Director, it’s crucial to create clear boundaries at home. “Without

And, importantly, when your workday stops, stop working. Stop checking emails and focus on your home life. And at the end of the day, try to get to bed at your usual time.” Have difficult conversations on neutral ground Bupa Global’s research among HNW parents found that nearly one in five (18%) saw signs of anxiety in their families during lockdown.

WELLBEING
Keep calm and carry on With diaries gradually filling up, it’s understandable that we might have mixed feelings about the return to normality – joy at the prospect of catching up with friends, but unease at the idea of crowds of people. In preparation for life post-lockdown, we caught up with Charlène Gisèle, primal health coach and professional biohacker, to discover her tips for managing stress and anxiety. She says: “The most effective way to keep calm whilst we gear up for re-opening is to look inwards. Here are some practical techniques for doing this.” Exposure therapy When it comes to re-socialising, especially around large groups, exposure therapy, whereby you start small and take baby steps to reintegration, is the best approach to avoid feeling overwhelmed and anxious. Choose one friend you know you’ll be comfortable around and have an extended walk in a park. Then incrementally build up to a couple of friends and simultaneously ask yourself if the thought of being around more people still makes you anxious? If the answer is yes, just dial it back until you feel ready to increase the numbers again. This ‘regress to progress’ approach is the underlying principle of exposure therapy. Body scans to go introspective A great way to bring about a deep sense of calm is to practise the ancient yogi technique of body scanning and visualisation, where you take a journey in your mind’s eye away from the
Your home, your life
external world and into your own body. With closed eyes, picture your feet, methodically move up to legs, belly, chest, shoulders and head. Try to go deeper – connect with your blood circulation, hear your heartbeat, feel your breath… This will instantly bring you into the present if you find yourself worrying about the future. Practise conscious breathing Learning to do rounds of conscious breathing – where you’re aware of when you inhale and exhale – throughout the day is one of the fastest and most powerful ways to instantly activate the parasympathetic nervous system and reduce the physical symptoms of stress and anxiety. The box breathing technique is an incredibly powerful stress reliever. Breathe in for four counts. Hold for four. Exhale for four. Then hold again for four. And repeat for four minutes or until calm returns. Immerse yourself in nature Another powerful tool to help manage your wellbeing is to spend more time in nature. The change of scenery can really help to reduce stress levels as it takes you outside of your thoughts, even for just a short time. Nature can be a challenge in London, but there are parks aplenty and you don’t need lots of space. Just find a patch of grass and take a seat. Or even better, take your shoes off on grass to benefit from the naturally calming effect of ‘earthing’ and connecting with yourself. All fired up Hot news: Campfire, an outdoor fire pit restaurant and taproom at Two Tribes Brewery’s Kings Cross home has just opened. Housed in two custom built shipping containers next door to the brewery, it offers a taproom experience centred around an impressive open-fire kitchen for resident chefs, which will also act as a backdrop for visiting musicians. An exciting programme has been organised by Peter Herbert (former resident DJ of Ibiza’s Cafe Del Mar) and Two Tribes founder Justin Deighton, including top DJ sets, album previews, secret concerts and live streamed events. Campfire’s initial food residents are From The Ashes BBQ, a trio of chefs who came together in the midst of lockdown, working with top farmers up and down the country to create one of London’s most exciting new barbecue restaurants. Frank Fellows, Martin Anderson and Curtis Bell have designed a special menu which includes the irresistible sounding nduja ‘Del Piero’ doughnuts filled with smoked pork, house made chilli jam, BBQ sauce and nduja; and for dessert, fire pit ‘chocolate’ profiteroles covered with a chocolate beer sauce made with Two Tribes Symphony cocoa and sea salt stout. Founder Justin describes Campfire as: “the perfect culmination of our vision for Two Tribes, which brings together incredible food, great beer and talented entertainers right in our backyard. I’m looking forward to building our line-up throughout 2021 and celebrating this with beer, music and food fans from across London” Tileyard Studios, Tileyard Road, N7 (twotribes.co.uk/campfire-venue)

And the spectacular Grade I listed venue has now launched as Chameleon, a restaurant and multiexperiential space. Critically acclaimed Israeli chef, Elior Balbul is overseeing the food and has designed a menu of exquisite Tel Avivian sharing plates, which are currently being offered al fresco in the stunning garden lounge. Later this month will see the launch of nine exquisitely styled greenhouses, offering seating for 150 in groups of up to 30. But there is so much more than food on offer at Chameleon – the venue will also showcase an exciting programme of experiences including God’s Garden (a flower market in the courtyard, curated by Artistically Twisted), fully immersive cinema nights, magical health and wellness sessions with Xscape Studio, rotating art exhibitions, and Curious, a new party experience and multi-sensory event with headline DJs, 3D visuals and incredible set design. And, watch this space for news of a new private members’ club launching later in the year… One Events will continue to manage and run events and weddings in The Soane and The Gallery spaces within the One Marylebone site, as they have done in the past. 1 Marylebone Road, NW1 (chameleon.london)

Heavenly hampers With meet ups back on the cards, and not one, but two bank holidays this month, we’re making picnic plans with a little help from Melrose and Morgan. Their new hampers promise to bring a little luxury to your picnic blanket this summer. Showcasing produce from some of the finest artisan producers, there are a number of al fresco feasts to choose from. We love the Traditional British, an ode to the classic picnic, featuring pork sausage rolls, Scotch eggs, savoury tarts, fresh strawberries and rich chocolate brownies. Meanwhile, Heath & Hill is designed to be enjoyed on our very favourite local green spaces, and comes filled with summer salads, empanadas, seasonal frittatas, smashed avocado, hummus and chocolate Florentines. For those extra special al fresco feasts, the team can provide wicker baskets, dining sets and herringbone blankets. And for ultimate picnic perfection, a DIY hamper can be filled with your pick of delicacies and treats. Prices from £20 per person. For details, see melroseandmorgan.com
MEMBERS’ CLUB
A family affair We’re excited to welcome b-together, a new family focused community hub, to St. John’s Wood High Street this month. Thoughtfully designed by founder Maggie Bolger, this multifaceted space offers an on-site nursery, eco-led retail area, co-working and meeting spaces, studios for workshops and classes, children’s soft play zones, a designated members’ space and an apartment for short stays. But we’re probably most excited about the brasserie, AT Feast. A new culinary hub for the whole family, it offers all-day dining, cookery workshops and a coffee bar. Menus have been designed to be nutritious, unpretentious and seasonal, packed with feel-good dishes to share, plus light-bites and deli offerings, all prepared on-site with locally sourced ingredients. Through the use of innovative recipes and reusing food scraps that would normally be thrown away, the team have worked hard to ensure the menu is as close to zero waste as possible. We think it sounds like the perfect space for the community to reconnect after the most difficult of years spent apart. 47-49 St. John’s Wood High Street, NW8 (b-together.com)

Look no further for that elusive new sofa – you’ll be as snug as a bug in a rug on The Cloud Sundae corner sofa or chaise longue, new from Snug ith its sofa-in-a-box concept, Snug really is a gamechanger for London’s apartment dwellers. No longer do we have to worry about hulking a cumbersome furniture piece up three flights of stairs, nor chipping the newly painted eggshell off our living room doorway. We’ve all been there, struggling to find an appropriate angle to squeeze in our brand new three-seater, heart sinking at the thought of taking the whole door off, or worse – sending the sofa back. Refreshingly, Snug’s contemporary settees, sofa beds, snugglers and chaises arrive neatly in separate, manageable boxes, and, ingeniously, they slot together with ease and without the need for any tools. The best bit is that the products are so plush you really wouldn’t know they’re selfassembly at all – and that’s thanks to seriously shrewd design coupled with top quality craftsmanship. New to the Snug family is The Cloud Sundae corner sofa and chaise, the former being a sprawling L-shaped settee, and the latter an indulgent lounger for one, designed for putting our feet up. With the use of innovative smart locking hardware, The Cloud Sundae range can be personalised with
clever modular extensions. If you’re already a fan of the brand and have the two- or three-seater at home, you can now expand your existing sofa set-up with a corner extension – ideal for when your family grows, or, indeed, you find yourself able to spread out in style in the dreamy townhouse you’ve just exchanged on. If space-saving’s a priority, The Cloud Sundae chaise boasts optional hidden storage. Simply glide open the boxy frame and you’ll find a nifty compartment in which to keep extra blankets and cushions, or anything else you might need to throw in for a quick de-clutter when unexpected guests arrive. As with all of Snug’s offering, The Cloud Sundae range is upholstered in the brand’s signature smart velvet fabric. The soft but durable material boasts easy-care and stain-resistant qualities with four inviting colourways on offer – choose from navy, mid-grey, forest green or soft teal. These plush furniture pieces feature luxuriously deep seats, no-edge seams, and bouncy vegan-friendly “feather” cushioning, so whichever hue you plump for you’re guaranteed the height of cosy. Ready to wear brand Taller Marmo launches its debut homeware collection this May, exclusively at MATCHESFASHION. Inspired by a year of staying at home, and the intimate indoor gatherings so soon on the cards, designers Yago Goicoechea and Riccardo Audisio envisioned a typical Taller Marmo woman in her fabulously bohemian surrounds. The collection includes huge, exquisitely handembroidered floor cushions, made in Como, Italy, and just like the luxury kaftans on offer, we can expect bold colours and sumptuous textiles.
While raising three small children, Sadie Sillett spent 10 years working as a professional cleaner before founding The Funky Appliance Company with husband Joe in 2016. Playfully exaggerating mid-century lines, Sadie’s small appliances go beyond retro and into the realms of retrofuturism. The Funky iron, toaster and kettle have already caused a stir amongst design lovers, we’re told there’s also plans for a Funky microwave and Funky air fryer this year. Fun and highly functional.

EAT OUT
A desire to reconnect with family and friends, compounded by the promise of sunshine, makes outdoor entertaining more popular than ever. Whether you have a small patio space to play with or a rolling lawn to spread out on, make sure your garden get-together lasts from day to night WORDS by ALI HOWARD
THE MODERN PATIO Contemporary patio pieces put paid to notions of traditional garden furniture with designs that blur the boundaries between inside and outside space. Now, you can smarten up your terrace with a three piece suite or modular sofa that gives its indoor counterpart a run for its money. Cox & Cox’s Capri corner set (opposite page), new for spring/summer 21, is a stylish case in point. With its fuss-free mid-century lines, its angled and tapered acacia wood legs, and its sumptuous soft grey cushioning, it is made for laid-back lounging. The L-shaped settee wraps around a similarly low-sitting coffee table, making it ideal for an al fresco afternoon tea. £1,750 (coxandcox.co.uk)
NATURE’S PALETTE For casual dining outdoors, choose materials that not only complement their natural environment, but improve with age and exposure to the elements. Nkuku’s Oso wooden dining table (right) does just that. Crafted from reclaimed teak, the hardwood takes on an attractive silver-grey hue over time, further blending with our stone patio. Here, the table and matching bench is teamed with the brand’s Chari industrial dining chairs in distressed black, while tabletop accessories focus on sustainability and craft-driven wares. Don’t forget the lighting: lanterns and candlesticks in antique brass bring both sophistication and cosiness. Table from £995 (nkuku.com)

NIGHT LIGHTS Outdoor lighting is just as important as our furniture choices, especially if we want to prolong the party when the sun goes down. We can transform our garden into a magical space with the flick of a switch, either illuminating overhead or creating cosy lit corners in which to huddle. Though our outdoor living spaces are wide open, we can create structure in place of a ceiling with the use of industrial style festoon lights, or a mass of ditsy fairy lights. Think about zoning your space. Above, an informal dining area has been created with the simple addition of warm string lights over the table. Proving that sometimes less is more, it is a perfectly romantic set-up. Core Connect warm white connectable fairy lights, from £26.99 (lights4fun.co.uk)
SET THE BAR As we move from day to night, we might want to recreate an outdoor entertaining space that’s more stylish wine bar than sit down eatery – it offers a more sophisticated aesthetic. Outdoor bars are set to be big news this summer, with playful products designed to give us that going out experience – even when we’re staying in. Eos’s rectangular bar table and matching stools (above), designed by Matthew Hilton, bring an industrial edge to our patio space. Clean-lined and contemporary, the lofty bar set is finished in a weatherproof powder-coated aluminium. It’s amazing how an extra foot of height can set the mood for evening drinks. Bar table, £670, backless bar stool, £200 (casefurniture.com)
ALL FIRED UP If we reimagine our garden as a seamless extension of our living space, when it comes to furniture and accessories, the possibilities are endless. But how about a permanent fixture that, just as in a living room set-up, creates that allimportant focal point? Austrian heating brand Schiedel have come up with an imposing outdoor fireplace (right) that keeps us warm when the sun goes down and doubles as a stylish barbecue or outdoor oven. The unit is crafted from pumice, sourced from Iceland’s Hekla volcano, and comes in three configurations with options for integrated log storage. It also offers the perfect excuse to stay outside for longer. Garden 950 model, from £2,014 (gardenfireplace.co.uk)

For interiors writer Geraldine James, a house simply isn’t a home without a canine companion
W
At home with
GERALDINE JAMES Sharing her two-bed garden flat with Eddie the terrier, this interiors writer proves that stylish lateral living can be canine friendly WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by JAMES GARDINER
hat makes a house a home? For some it’s calming décor, for others it’s a vibrant family kitchen… For Geraldine, it’s the pitter patter of tiny paws. “It was my daughter who, after years of grinding me down, persuaded me to get a dog. I’ve never looked back and will always have a dog in my life now,” she smiles. “He sits at my feet when I’m writing, he sleeps on the end of my bed, and he sits on the back of the sofa guarding our home from intruders… He’s always getting photographed!” Eddie, a proud Battersea rescue dog named after his famous lookalike in Frasier, is one of the beloved pooches featured in Geraldine’s recently published book, Cool Dogs, Cool Homes. Inviting us to snoop around some inspirational abodes – and meet the four-legged friends who guard them – Geraldine shows us how a canine companion can fit right into a modern home without having to sacrifice on style. There’s even a chapter titled Design Dogs, in which high profile designers such as Abigail Ahern and Nikki Tibbles show us their beautifully curated but nonetheless dog-friendly residences. Geraldine’s own apartment, a masterclass in restrained glamour with its wealth of natural textures and mono accents, takes up the ground floor of a large Victorian semi. With a separate entranceway, high ceilings, two double bedrooms and a sizable kitchen/diner, she describes it as having “a rare sense of space”. “I was attracted to it initially because of the size. So many Victorian houses are small, but there are only four houses of this size in the street. The others, although a mixture of styles, are of a more conventional size,” she says. Despite its pleasing footprint, the flat has seen some extensive improvement work in the 25 years that Geraldine has lived here. This includes replacing period features that had been removed. Architecturally sympathetic coving, internal doors and a huge marble fire surround were lovingly reinstalled. More recently, Geraldine has given her bathroom a makeover, reclaiming space from an old airing cupboard and significantly extending it to include a walk-in shower. She has also widened the doors to the garden and created further double doors into the sheltered area at

the side of the kitchen – now a dream indoor/outdoor space complete with dining table, a painted bench with cosy scatter cushions, an assortment of vintage chairs, climbing jasmine and vine leaves overhead. “This really came about when my neighbour built an extension using lovely bricks,” she says. “It then made sense to create an outdoor covered dining area using the space. It is one of the best things I’ve done.” Along with Geraldine’s indoor dining table, the one outside came from an antiques fair and has been in her possession for years. When restrictions allow her, procurement of interesting furniture pieces and accessories takes her across Europe. “I love shopping in the Sablon in Belgium to buy mid-century furniture. My dining chairs come from there,” she reveals. “Pezenas in south west France has over 50 antique shops, I love going there and I never return empty handed. And I love Fornasetti in Milan for really mad quirky items, and Merci in Paris for glass and ceramics. I’ve broken so much returning on the Eurostar over the years,” she laughs. “And I’ve collected textiles from everywhere: African mud cloth from Brussels, Hungarian linen sheets from Kempton Antiques, cushions from Anthropologie and Soho Home…” It is good old Ikea for basics, though. Geraldine has recently added two glazed front cabinets to the kitchen, which she calls “a real game changer.” Although an avid collector, there is a discipline to Geraldine’s interiors shopping habits and the way in which she gives her favourite pieces space to breathe – the apartment is anything but cluttered. “I have never had a look in mind and mostly what happens is that it evolves and I drift from one aesthetic seamlessly to another,” she says. “I used to like a much more
Your home, your life
decorated aesthetic, but now I instinctively want a pared back look and I find myself stripping back, giving things away or loaning things.” Artwork features heavily in the flat, too, all lovingly curated, of course: “Some of my favourite items I’ve collected include an oil painting of a couple of Flamenco dancers, which I bought at the Montpellier antiques fair; a white linen dress oil painting in my bedroom, painted by my good friend Richard Nott; and a huge oil painting in my kitchen of a tutu in turquoise and green, painted and gifted to me by Laurence Amélie. “It is so striking and adds so much to any room – I have moved it around my flat.” Like so many of us, Geraldine’s lockdown experience has been a mixed one: “Family visits were on the doorstep, in fact my granddaughter had her first birthday on the doorstep,” she recalls. “But it’s also true that we’ve reconnected with our homes. I used the first lockdown to really get to grips with home tasks I’d been meaning to do. I’ve spent time making small changes, getting better organised, replacing an old rug...” Without question, Geraldine’s commodious kitchen/dining space, which spills out into the garden, proved a godsend: “It really came into its own last year when we were allowed six friends outside,” she says. “I have lights outside and plenty of seating. When lit in the summer with all the doors open it’s a great space, perfect for parties. It’s magical… And of course Eddie’s favourite place is wherever I am – apart from when dark falls, then he’s in the garden for hours hunting foxes.” Cool Dogs, Cool Homes by Geraldine James, £19.99, published by CICO Books (rylandpeters.com)

hether you’re stepping into one of Litta’s largescale commercial projects or a small residential apartment, the first thing that strikes you is warmth. A homely aesthetic comes naturally to the interior designer, whose early Persian childhood inspired her love of all things rich and exotic. Mix that with her love of the Nordic tradition – practicality, functionality and simplicity – and you have Litta’s signature style. Moving to Denmark at a young age, Litta was immersed into the world of design (her father worked for the acclaimed architect and furniture designer, Arne Jacobsen). Being so close to design royalty unquestionably made its mark on the young Litta and this strong Scandi influence can be seen today throughout her work. Fascinated by space, Litta allows her designs to really breathe, with form and function working in perfect harmony. To her, every room should have individual style and a whole lot of soul, but ultimately, it should reflect the personality of the client. These are dream spaces designed with a sense of calm and relaxation at their heart. Coastal cool In decorating this Danish beach house (top), Litta had full creative control – but she was keen to emphasise its natural coastal beauty without adding too much. Here, the decor hits the perfect balance between elegance and functionality. With oodles of natural daylight flooding through the property, the designer wanted to keep the space light and bright with the use of a white wash on the walls. Rustic wood and natural textures feature throughout, with cheery pastel colour pops making an appearance in every room.
Meet the designer
LITTA SOHI Creating contemporary spaces with warmth and beauty comes naturally to this London-based interior designer with an international outlook
Natural glamour Litta was tasked with renewing the living room of this Hampstead home (top right). The client wanted a warm and elegant space. Going against her usual Scandi leaning towards bright white walls, the designer plumped for a warm, dark and creamy paint colour. The earthy tone is contrasted beautifully with soft white voiles, while a striking black marble coffee table brings a dose of glamour to the natural palette. The look is finished with imposing house plants and a playfully oversized mid-century lampshade overhead. Breathing space As much at home kitting out a sprawling mansion as she is decorating a studio apartment,
there’s no job too small for Litta – and this one bed London flat (right) is a stylish case in point. With its limited floor plan, the designer has created the illusion of space with the use of cleverly zoned areas, sleek and clean-lined furnishings, and a neutral colour palette that awards the apartment a pleasing continuity as you walk from room to room. The result is light, bright and airy. For further information, visit littasohi.com or get in touch on 07776 016966 or info@littasohi.com

An online school in an online learning environment With online learning set to remain a key element to education moving forward, discover the advantages of a purpose-built online school
O
nline learning, digital learning, remote learning, blended learning, ed tech… these are just some of the words that have been used to describe education across the world as schools, colleges and universities have been forced to restructure their educational programmes in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. And, whilst ‘online learning’ is set to remain a key part of education moving forward, there are some fundamental differences between this method of teaching and learning and educational programmes that are specifically designed for a purpose-built online school. There is no doubt that over the past 12 months, educators have embraced online learning and have adapted to the best of their ability – with very little notice and guidance in moving to this way
of teaching. In what has been a steep learning curve, many schools have realised that what works in a physical classroom doesn’t always translate well in an online environment. But, when done well, online learning can be as effective as learning in a traditional bricks-andmortar classroom. Students at Pearson Online Academy USA, Connections Academy and Harrow School Online are just some of the 105,000 young people across the world using Pearson online learning platforms to power their learning. And the team are looking forward to welcoming even more at Pearson Online Academy UK Global when it opens its virtual doors this September. The structure of learning in an online school is noticeably different. At Pearson Online Academy the flipped classroom approach increases student engagement
and encourages critical thinking. Pearson’s proven technology enables students to study from home, progressing through interactive self-study materials to develop an understanding of subject content before joining ‘LiveLesson’ sessions in virtual classrooms with expert teachers and their fellow students across the world. By encouraging students to work through materials independently at a time and pace that suits them, and by using technology that generates deep insights about their learning, teachers can tailor lessons to the specific support or challenge requirements of the students in their class, with additional time freed up for them to work with individuals during one-to-one sessions. Introducing Heathside Fellowship For the first time ever, Heathside School will welcome GCSE students this year, headteacher Katherine Vintiner explains why they will be taking an innovative approach to learning in the senior school
H
eathside School Hampstead is a vibrant and nurturing school for children from age two. Recently granted permission from the Department for Education has allowed the school to extend the upper age range of pupils to 16 for the first time this year. Headteacher Katherine Vintiner believes that simply offering students a range of GCSEs is not enough though, so the school has found a new way to ensure that all students achieve their best possible outcomes – the Heathside Fellowship. “The true meaning of education is to bring forth what is within, and we have developed the Heathside Fellowship with that firmly in mind,” Katherine tells us. “The Fellowship is a five-pronged approach to education that enables students to gain experience and qualifications in a wide range of areas. The purpose of the Fellowship is to equip Heathside students for their future in a rapidly changing world. The five elements – Scholarship, Pre-cognition, Autonomy, Citizenship and Entrepreneurship – blend to give each student experiences that allow them to play to their strengths and interests.” First and foremost come academic qualifications: Scholarship. Heathside is a non-academically selective school, but academic standards are high. Focus is not only on the GCSE subjects but scholarship itself; how to learn, think critically and build confidence. By helping every student learn to learn, the school gives them every possibility to achieve the best results they can. Pre-cognition helps students explore the changes and opportunities that are taking place in the world around them, driven by rapid technological advances in areas such as climate change, AI or gaming. A pre-cognition convention held each year has been designed to put students face to face with speakers from innovative companies. Autonomy is about ensuring that young people have the leadership and team building skills required in the workplace, this is achieved through an employability skills qualification offered by the Association of Business Executives. Citizenship is sewn into the entire curriculum at Heathside, through the house system, and the Fellowship encourages volunteering centred on caring for others and the physical environment.
Finally, Entrepreneurship – through careers advice, employment skills training and the mini MBA, students will gain an understanding of the world of work and how to bring a commercial idea to life. “The Heathside Fellowship is driven by a clear focus on our ethos and will equip students with the information, skills and toolkit to really find themselves and become knowledgeable and engaged citizens,” Katherine concludes. “I am so excited that Heathside is able to offer young people such a wide variety of experiences and hope that we will help each student to discover the path to their own future.” For all admissions enquiries, or to book a socially-distanced school tour, call 020 3058 4011. H

Children are prepared for 7+, 8+ and 11+ examinations. The ethos and aims of the school embrace high academic standards, creative endeavour and individual attention. Adapting to change For Hampstead-based St. Anthony’s School for Boys, the past year has presented its unique challenges, but the response from pupils has consistently exceeded expectations, says Chris Kearns, Deputy Head, Academic
O
ne thing that the last year, with its extended periods of remote learning, has taught us, is just how adaptable young people are. In the first lockdown, schools immediately focused on continuing to deliver the usual standard of curriculum, incorporating the stretch, challenge and support that pupils were accustomed to finding in the physical classroom. The challenges presented by this are well documented, and Chris Kearns, Deputy Head, Academic at St. Anthony’s School for Boys agrees that it was tough at times. “Keeping
boys engaged and motivated was no mean feat, but our excellent teaching and support staff were able to rise to the challenge with a great deal of creativity, flexibility and, crucially, lots of empathy.” As adults we are all too well aware of the difficulties that sitting behind a screen and remaining focused for prolonged periods of time can present; it is a challenge that is amplified for youngsters, who need to channel a mentality of selfdiscipline and routine, which can be both daunting and, at times, rather draining. “We were delighted at how well the boys rose to the challenge,” Chris says. “Their resilience and determination shone through in all that they did. Their admirable work ethic and good humour meant that we were able to deliver a successful remote programme, with both academic progress and pastoral wellbeing at its heart – the key principles underpinning our approach at St. Anthony’s.” Furthermore, he explains, the transition into remote learning mark two was seamless, and it quickly became evident that the boys’ digital literacy skills had improved exponentially. Skills which many adults employ in the world of work became the new normal.
Boys were clearly adept in utilising a range of platforms to collaborate and communicate with each other and their teachers. “Things like screen sharing, presenting on TEAMs and ‘version control’ had become second nature to St. Anthony’s pupils. Work which pupils turned in demonstrated their improved ability to manipulate documents and coedit in a creative and collaborative manner. Their communication was deliberate and concise and ‘break out rooms’ became a popular option for learning,” Chris tells us. Indeed, feedback from class teachers, work scrutiny and conversations with the boys themselves have indicated that far from slowing down, several aspects of learning and progress actually accelerated during remote teaching. The important thing now of course is to maintain this momentum. The big take-away for senior leaders overseeing pupils’ learning is that remote learning has unearthed a wealth of opportunities which must not be forgotten as a semblance of normality resumes. Indeed, many elements of learning were enhanced, rather than denigrated by moving online. Learnings the team at St. Anthony’s
070
are determined to translate into the normal day-to-day delivery of the curriculum. Incorporating the use of platforms such as One-Note into daily teaching is just one example of this. “We are steadfast in our determination that the lessons of online learning, and the enhancements to be gained will form one of our school’s key priorities moving forward. We take this so seriously that we have already procured personal Surface Gos for all boys in Years 7 and 8, as a means of integrating digital and traditional methods both in the classroom and for prep,” Chris explains. Preparing boys for the next stage, senior school and beyond, is a responsibility that the school takes extremely seriously, not least because many of the digitally-based careers the boys will likely enter are yet to be created! “The prolonged period of remote learning has had a positive impact in many respects, and it is this legacy which we will be incorporating into our ‘new educational normal’ as face-to-face teaching resumes, albeit not as we knew it!” Chris concludes. Testing times
In an unusual year, St. Anthony’s School for Girls celebrates another set of outstanding 11+ results
T
he past year has been universally challenging, but particularly so for our young people, who have endured school closures and long periods isolated from friends and extended family. Celebrating successes during this period is more important than ever, then. One group of students who did not allow the events of the past 12 months to stand in their way are the year 6 girls at St. Anthony’s School for Girls, who achieved fantastic results in their 11+ – receiving offers for places at London’s top independent schools, and being awarded major academic scholarships. With the school being closed twice because of national lockdowns, normality was substantially disrupted when it came to this year’s cohort preparing for the 11+. The lockdowns and restrictions also resulted in numerous changes to the examination format; the Consortium schools, being unable to host 11+ testing in person, arranged for all candidates to complete computerised ISEB tests. Furthermore, the interview process was altered, with scheduled online interviews taking the place of the regular school-based ones. But the girls at St Anthony’s navigated all of these unexpected changes with calmness and confidence. They went on to receive offers at City of London, North London Collegiate, South Hampstead High, Channing, Highgate, Mill Hill, Francis Holland, Queen’s College, Queenswood, Northwood, St. Margaret’s and St. Helen’s. This is true testament to the hard work, dedication
and commitment they demonstrated while completing the St. Anthony’s 18-month 11+ curriculum, a roadmap to success for all the girls. St. Anthony’s offers its girls a bespoke 18-month 11+ curriculum, which begins in Year 5 with specialist English, maths and science teaching. Girls have responded enthusiastically to this curriculum, developing fearlessness in mathematics and curiosity in science, and becoming accomplished writers and orators. The school believes that the curriculum not only teaches to the exam, but beyond the confines of that, ensuring that their girls are fully educated for secondary school. The core curriculum is not taught in isolation, but within a broad creative curriculum of drama, music and sports. This approach ensures that no area of learning
is ‘put on ice’ until after the 11+ examinations. As one parent commented, “St. Anthony’s made the 11+ preparation seem easy.” The headteacher, Donal Brennan, acknowledged what an honour it has been to lead the second cohort of Year 6 girls to 11+ success. “They have shown true commitment and been excellent role models for the younger children – it has been an immensely rewarding experience. My thanks go to the girls, my gratitude to the teachers and my appreciation to the parents who have been so supportive of their daughters’ 11+ preparation during these challenging times.” St. Anthony’s School for Girls enters its sixth year in September 2021, buoyed by its phenomenal 11+ success, assured in its curriculum delivery and confident in the environment it provides for success. Aidan Coates, Hamptons
“Post-Covid, I’m most looking forward to returning to the wonderfully vibrant Charlotte Street. This is one of my favourite spots in Fitzrovia, with its diverse collection of bars and restaurants, from Vagabond wine bar to Bourne & Hollingsworth cocktail bar, or dinner at the five star Charlotte Street Hotel, it’s the perfect night out.”
Nick Poppe, Savills
“There’s a youthful feel here, with many international students choosing to settle in the area due to its proximity to Oxford Circus and the West End universities. Once they’ve graduated, their parents will often keep these properties as investments. There’s a variety, from the red brick quirky architecture through to the characterful developments such as Rathbone Square and Fitzroy Place, putting Fitzrovia on the map as a residential destination of choice.”
Meet the locals David Moore Owner, Pied à Terre Living in Bloomsbury, I walk to work in Fitzrovia, passing through Russell and Bedford Squares and past the British Museum. I have to pinch myself – what a commute! I head up Tottenham Court Road towards Warren Street for a morning coffee at Miel Bakery – they serve truly amazing pastries, very much worth the detour. I sit in Fitzroy Square to drink my coffee, grabbing a few quiet moments before the start of another busy day at the restaurant on Charlotte Street. If the kids are with me, we might pop into Pollocks Toy Museum on Scala Street, or stop for a snack from Homeslice on Wells Street. The kids cannot wait for the opening of Where the Pancakes Are, a new concept for Charlotte Street. My great pal Andrew Jose at No.1 Charlotte St (we’ve been neighbours on the street for 30 years) used to cut my hair (say no more!). Now the rest of the family go there instead. A guilty pleasure is to grab fish and chips from Gigs on Tottenham Street and sit in Crabtree Fields behind Pied à Terre. An unlikely bolthole for an evening glass of wine is Cleveland Street, to the west of Fitzroy Square, in the shadow of the BT Tower – it is home to several great places, including The Remedy Wine Bar Shop & Kitchen and the Fitzroy Wine Cellar & Kitchen. A sneaky cocktail at the London Cocktail Club on Goodge Street is always fun, or a cooling ale at the Duke of York on Rathbone Street. Charlotte Street is a very famous restaurant street, full of eateries including Norma and ROKA. Of course, my favourite spot is Michelinstarred Pied à Terre – in the famous words of Mandy Rice Davies, I would say that wouldn’t I, but it has been my second home for 30 years on this fantastic street in Fitzrovia. Pied à Terre is London’s longest standing Michelin star restaurant and celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. 34 Charlotte Street, W1T (020 7636 1178; pied-a-terre.co.uk)

“Over the last 15 years we’ve seen historic Fitzrovia develop and blossom alongside its big sister Marylebone. The neighbourhood offers an edgy and eclectic mix of eateries, bars, hotels and galleries. But here’s some exciting news residentially: if you wish to immerse yourself fully and live in the area, check out 204 Great Portland Street – a stunning new landscape-defining development of apartments and penthouses.”

Local heroes Fitzrovia 1 The Lamb, WC1N
Paul Finch from Beauchamp Estates names this lively central London pub as his local hero. “It’s a quintessential period pub – and it’s where Dickens used to drink,” he says. The Lamb is situated between Holborn and Russell Square tube stations, boasting a great location in the heart of the action. You really can’t miss its ornate Victorian façade with its gold lettering and bottle green tiles. Re-opening its doors on 17 May, we’re looking forward to many craft beers and much seasonal British fare to come. Book a table if you can. 94 Lamb’s Conduit Street, WC1N (020 7405 0713; thelamblondon.com)

Buzzing around town can be thirsty work, so it pays to have a favourite haunt to keep returning to for a well-earned coffee break. Located at the corner of Mortimer Street and Wells Street, Mortimer’s is exactly that: a local gem and a much-loved pit-stop for busy Londoners. “It is a fantastic independent coffee shop,” says James Staite from Dexters. “It’s the perfect spot to grab some lunch while I’m on the go. Their friendly team are always so accommodating and the fresh sandwiches are simply delicious. I would highly recommend Mortimer’s to anyone who is passing through Fitzrovia.”
You don’t have to be a tourist to take advantage of the Capital’s finest hotels – and this local treasure is a case in point. Not just for overnight guests, the hotel boasts a range of luxurious amenities for local residents, too, from the exquisitely designed Bloomsbury Club Bar to the iconic Dalloway Terrace with its hedonistic, bohemian décor that’s so fitting with the spirit of the neighbourhood. Genevieve Manning, who’s lived in Fitzrovia for over 20 years, tells us: “The Bloomsbury is so lovely and a real hidden gem. There’s the cool Coral Room, a lovely 1920s speakeasy style bar.”

Catching up postCovid
Southbank International School How would you sum up the school in a sentence? A lively community of diverse, inquisitive learners thriving in central London What makes Southbank International School different? Our focus on inquiry – a conceptbased curriculum that drives understanding, not just ‘knowing’, and purposeful action, not just ‘skills’.
While the pandemic threw up all manner of uncertainties, one thing we can be sure of is the huge disruption that Covid caused within the education sector. Let’s not forget that for the best part of a year students moved their learning online, with little to no face-to-face teaching and scant social interaction in the classroom – a significant shake-up for any young person starting out in life. Now, with pupils settling back into school and the world slowly opening up again, we’re looking towards a more normal, pre-pandemic style of education. But, as pupils inevitably feel the pressure of learning gaps left by the disruptive year, is there an element of online homeschooling that we can continue alongside the real thing? And if so, how do we navigate this hybrid digital/real life education? In a recent study, leading EdTech platform MyTutor found that 88 per cent of students reported online tutoring made them feel more confident in their abilities – especially during a time of severe academic disruption. This not only shows that extra online study can still be a valuable tool post-pandemic, but highlights the need for tailored support, with all the freedom and flexibility that online learning naturally brings with it. Ultimately, it’s about meeting
students where they are with their education, building confidence, and filling in those gaps. Bertie Hubbard, co-founder of MyTutor says: “EdTech allows us to bring life-changing learning to more kids than ever before. We provide online tuition that raises kids’ grades, boosts confidence and helps them fulfil their potential in life. Because it’s online, kids get access to amazing tutors from across the country, rather than whoever’s nearby. Tech also means we can offer high quality learning experiences at a scale not possible offline. Our tutors learn from each other in their online community, and they have access to online training built by teachers. Because they’re subject experts from UK universities, they have recent GCSE and A Level exam experience and up to date curriculum knowledge – perfect for helping teens achieve the best grades they can.” Far from replacing real life teachers with robots, MyTutor focuses on enhancing personto-person learning with a huge emotional impact on students reported – and who can argue with the need for that right now? “They love learning from ‘cool’ older role models,” says Bertie. mytutor.co.uk

Market insight from our agents MARKET NEWS
Bouncing back While we’ve had little to celebrate over the past year, the property market has experienced turbocharged levels of buyer demand with a 7.5 per cent annual rate of house price growth recorded in January. This, of course, is largely thanks to the stamp duty holiday, which caused a flurry amongst the nation’s house hunters – whether first time buyers, downsizers, or those simply looking for a fresh start post-pandemic. So what does the London picture look like? “We’re starting to see a strong reversal in the fortunes of the London property market and this isn’t just refined to the outer boroughs offering larger homes with outdoor space,” says Benham and Reeves’ Marc von Grundherr. “Momentum is certainly growing across central boroughs and, in fact, a number of inner London postcodes have seen the most transactions take place since we first entered lockdown. Despite a soon to be implemented stamp duty surcharge for foreign buyers, we expect this segment of buyers to be pivotal in the revival of the London market in the coming months as the world reopens.”

ASK THE AGENT
Q: I want to take advantage of the stamp duty holiday – what can I do to push a sale through quickly? A: It is vital that you have your property on the market immediately to give yourself the best chance of finding a buyer who can move quickly. A proactive, experienced agent will help guide you through the whole process – your agent can also recommend a solicitor to you that they know and trust, who will be quick to respond to any queries. Delays are often caused by local authority searches, so we recommend you buy the searches in advance as they are valid for several months. Some buyers will agree to buy these off you, others may not, but it is a relatively small price to pay that could speed up your sale by several weeks. And if you are selling an apartment, be proactive and purchase the managing agent pack as soon as you have offers on your property. Sam Gould, Chestertons
