F RO M THE EDITOR
Christmas is coming
Liz Skone James, Editor
While it might not be December yet, whether you want to hear it or not, Christmas is now imminent (don’t shoot the messenger). Personally, I love this time of year, and it has been an absolute delight to put together our annual gift guide for you: we’ve trawled the shops to find 2018’s ultimate gifts (for everybody and every budget). And with the holiday season in mind, we’ve also included a guide to decorating your home with festive florals; because when it comes to botanicals, there’s so much more to Christmas than the tree. Don’t want to think about all that mistletoe and wine and good cheer just yet? Fear not, this issue still contains all of your regular favourites, including a tour of an extraordinary west London home created in an old MOT garage. See you next month, when I will make no apology for going full on festive…

FESTIVAL
UK Jewish Film Festival
8-22 Nov | various venues We’re in for cinematic treats and silver screenings galore as this annual celebration in celluloid marks its 22nd edition. Aiming to bring the best of contemporary Jewish cinema to the heart of British culture, its comprehensive programme of premieres, panel discussions and special events is punctuated with opening, closing and centrepiece galas – a diverse trio of films not to be missed… Screenings in various north London cinemas, for details, see ukjewishfilm.org
Working Woman Michal Aviad’s UK premiere is cited as a cautionary tale for our times, and a timely one at that. The Israeli drama follows Orna, a newlyappointed property marketing manager determined to prove herself to her new boss, whilst sacrificing family life and free time. But when Benny’s flirting becomes harassment, Orna struggles to restore her sense of dignity and self-worth.
Promise at Dawn

Three Identical Strangers The true story of triplets separated at birth, Tim Wardle’s prize-winning documentary is as remarkable as it is disturbing. Raised by their respective adoptive families within a 100 mile radius, siblings Robert Shafran, Eddy Galland and David Kellman grew up oblivious to the fact they each had two identical brothers. Stranger than fiction.
Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg as an overbearing Jewish mother, Éric Barbier’s latest filmic offering is a powerful adaptation of novelist Romain Gary’s 1960 memoir, and an ode to complex mother-child relationships. Both heart-breaking and hilarious, it promises an emotional ride.

Christmas Shopping Evening
Black Mirror: Art as Social Satire
5-8pm, W2 (connaught-village.co.uk)
Duke of York’s HQ, King’s Road, SW3 (saatchigallery.com)
22 Nov | Connaught Village Love it or loathe it, the seasonal shop is a time-consuming task that requires considerable planning. An opportunity to combine the gift-getting with an evening of music and masterclasses, however, is a delight. This luxury shopping and dining destination will open its doors late, allowing us to take in the carol singing, the opera and jazz, whilst perusing the boutiques and getting stuck in with style tutorials and food and drink pairing. Sounds like hungry work? Shoppers can make a night of it with a dinner reservation at one of the village’s independent restaurants.
Until 13 Jan | Saatchi Gallery From “fake news” to the rise of neo-fascism, these are tumultuous times for modern-day politics. A deep delve into how political uncertainty influences the art world, this exhibition features 26 contemporary artists whose work reacts to today’s divisive climate. Exploring the role of art in social satire, and in doing so providing light relief, the show’s highlights include Richard Billingham’s Ray’s A Laugh series – confrontational photography, or “squalid realism” as it’s been coined and John Stezaker’s Marriage series (above), which splices and overlaps publicity shots of iconic film stars, with unsettling results.

Unseen Icons by Phil Griffin
Until 23 Nov | Brownsword Hepworth Gallery It takes a special skill to capture something different in the world’s most photographed. Griffin’s work as a creative director in the entertainment industry enabled him to forge close relationships with his celebrated subjects. In doing so, he got a glimpse of his sitter’s honesty and vulnerability, revealing a level of intimacy few celebrity snappers could get close to. Here, the photographer presents a series of portraits taken over a 25 year period, featuring the famous faces of Diana Ross, Amy Winehouse, Annie Lennox and more. “To me, a good photograph is never taken – but given,” Griffin says. Now, he’s giving us a gem of an exhibition.

PERFORMANCE
The Wider Earth Courtesy of The Trustees of the Natural History Museum
Until 30 Dec | Natural History Museum Theatrical history is being made here as an ambitious 357-seat performance space is erected within the Jerwood Gallery to accommodate the European premiere of David Morton’s Darwinian drama. That the production has found its natural home amongst the many specimens Charles Darwin collected on his expeditions is pure poetry. But it’s the sublime puppetry that’s really making audiences’ jaws drop. Featuring a cast of seven, with 30 extraordinary handmade puppets, The Wider Earth is an ingenious coming-of-age story which celebrates the natural wonders of our planet. Takeo Paper Show: Subtle
29 Nov-7 Dec | various venues With free entry to most events and talks, there’s really no excuse not to immerse yourself in the Capital’s art world come 29 November. From special selling exhibitions and auctions to one-off shows and discussions, there’s a weighty 5,000 years of fine art to cover here. LAW’s series of winter Salons invites new audiences to explore pre-contemporary art whilst providing a platform for more than 40 dealers and auction houses to engage with curators, connoisseurs and collectors alike. In fact, free entry or no, this could prove expensive for those of us with a fine art habit. Various galleries, for details, see londonartweek.co.uk
13 Nov-24 Dec | Japan House With its roots in Japan’s only paper industry show, held since 1965, a quiet celebration of perhaps the most humble material opens this November. Presenting the works of 15 creators across art, animation, architecture, fashion, graphic design and literature, the exhibition serves to highlight our most innovative ways with paper. Focusing on texture, colour and technique, Subtle invites visitors to observe each intricate piece up close and in minute detail – and that’s the only way to fully appreciate Misawa Haruka’s hyper-faceted work, Paper Flower.
Winter cheer in the Royal Parks This December, The Royal Parks is hosting two festive activities in Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens aimed to spread some holiday cheer. You can escape the bustle of Christmas shopping and enjoy a relaxing morning creating your own festive wreath using local greenery and natural materials from Hyde Park on Saturday 8 December. There’ll be festive music, drinks and nibbles to enjoy. That same day, join the team for a stroll in Kensington Gardens to discover how Queen Victoria and her consort Prince Albert introduced many of the traditions we recognise today: discover why the robin features on Christmas cards and see first-hand where the geese were traditionally fattened for Christmas dinner. To find out more, visit royalparks.org.uk/whatson/upcoming-events The Royal Parks is the charity that cares for 5,000 acres of glorious Royal parkland and 500 years of history in the heart of our capital city. HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM PROPERTY FRAUD Earlier this year, after the longest criminal trial in UK history, property fraudster Edwin McLaren was jailed for 11 years. Simon Nosworthy, Head of Residential Property at Osbornes Law, looks at what property fraud is, who is considered vulnerable to property fraud and what homeowners can do to protect themselves. What is property fraud? Property owners are increasingly at risk from fraudsters who are constantly finding more inventive ways to commit crimes. Common types of property fraud include fraudsters selling properties they do not own to innocent third parties, or obtaining mortgages and stealing the money. More sophisticated types of fraud involve persuading people to pay into non-existent investment funds. Simon Nosworthy describes property fraud as: someone pretending to be you to buy, sell or mortgage your property or pretending to be a solicitor to trick people into directing cash into their account. Also, people hacking databases or intercepting emails between people and their solicitors in a bid to divert payments. Who is especially vulnerable to property fraud? Anyone is a potential victim of property fraud. However, properties that are either vacant, tenanted, being refurbished or mortgage free are especially vulnerable. The elderly are also considered more at risk. In McLaren’s case, he took advantage of older people by offering his services as a financial adviser, and over time encouraged them to sign over their properties to him.
Why does property fraud occur? Homeowners may be unaware that information held with the Land Registry is available for anyone to view through the Land Registry website. This unfortunately includes fraudsters, who can find out who owns a property and if there are any mortgages over it. Fraudsters can also find out lender details and sample signatures. In 2003, the Land Registry also did away with traditional paper certificates, which had to be presented to the Land Registry on any dealings relating to the property. The Land Registry now provides copies of the registers on completion of a registration, and official copies of a title can be requested by all persons. Also, with email now becoming the preferred method of communicating, individuals leave themselves open to fraud if their email account is not secure. How you can protect your property One of the best ways to protect your property is by registering for property alerts at the Land Registry website. Once registered, if anyone applies to change the register of your property you will receive an email alert. Although the service will not stop any changes from being made, it will alert you to any fraudulent intentions on your property.
As a homeowner, you can also place a restriction on your title, which prevents the Land Registry from registering a sale or mortgage on your property unless a solicitor certifies that the application was made by you. It is also important to ensure that your property solicitor has a rigorous anti-money laundering and identity check process to reduce the risk of property fraud. Finally, if you are going to use email it is important that you keep your antivirus software up to date and watch out for suspicious emails. Osbornes Law are accredited by the Law Society under the Conveyancing Quality Scheme, a kitemark awarded only to law firms adhering to strict requirements of the Law Society to prevent fraud. Osbornes Law can advise you on any residential or commercial property issue. The firm also has a specialist property disputes and litigation department, which, in the first instance, will always seek to assist you resolve a matter without going to Court. Maybe you’ve fallen in love with a little black dress, but you’ve never had an occasion to wear it, or you snapped up a sale bargain in a smaller size, wrongly assuming that the New Year diet would work, for once. And then there’s the stuff you kept meaning to return, but never did… Whatever the reason, all of us own gorgeous things that we’ve never worn, or perhaps worn, but only once. Step up My Wardrobe Mistakes, an online marketplace for preowned (“first-and-half hand”) luxury fashion apparel and accessories, launched late last month by fashionista Virginie Alvarez to offer these shopping mistakes a second life. We love: Hairstory New Wash
FA B R I C R E C O M M E N D S
Su-Man Chi Flow Contour Facial I’ve long been a fan of ballet dancer turned facialist to the stars Su-Man, whose treatments are based on a combination of Pilates, Shiatsu and traditional Chinese facial massage, and have been dubbed the natural alternative to Botox. News that she is launching a new facial, available exclusively at agua Spa at Sanderson, is music to my ears: I ensure I’m first on the list to sample it. Incorporating elements of her now famous Skin Reborn Sculpting Facial, the Chi Flow Contour Facial is based on the ‘skin scraping’ Gua Sha technique (a traditional Chinese healing art form), and is designed to unblock meridians, balancing body and mind. After guiding me through the somewhat bewildering white curtained corridors of the spa (carrying my bags and chastising me for their weight), Su-Man settles me on the bed and begins her unique skin analysis. I’m familiar with it from her original facial: a clever device tells her just how hydrated my skin is (good news: it’s not as bad as I imagined) and a head and shoulder massage enables her to detect areas of stagnation and stress (and begin the process of clearing said blockages). Steaming,
cleansing and extraction follow. Su-Man asks if I mind her removing a milia that has recently appeared on my eyelid, I’m delighted, but do not anticipate quite how uncomfortable this will be: “Whatever you do, don’t move,” she instructs as I lie, frozen, with a tear rolling down my cheek. All pain is forgotten when the scraping begins; it feels deeply relaxing and, with eyes shut, I enquire if a roller is being used: “No, rollers are for lazy people who don’t know what they are doing,” I’m told. Su-Man runs a combination of sticks and plates over the skin of my face and décolletage to encourage the circulation under the skin, bringing nutrients and boosting collagen and elastin. Incorporated with her famous massage techniques, my skin is given a thorough workout. Afterwards I can’t help but stare at my reflection in the mirror. My pores are visibly smaller, I have cheekbones where once there were none and there is definition around my jawline. Su-Man brings Shakespeare’s Hermia to mind, she is little but make no mistake, she is fierce. LSJ £220 for a 60-minute treatment. agua Spa, Sanderson, 50 Berners Street, W1T (020 7300 1414; su-man.com)
We can’t tell you the number of things we’ve been led to believe will change our lives. But from the digital perm to the Power Plate, nothing ever seems to quite live up to expectation. Giving up shampoo really is a game changer, though; trust us. And no, we’re not validating the dreadlocks and self-cleaning hair theory. Hairstory’s New Wash is not a shampoo and not a conditioner, it’s a replacement for both. A detergent-free, 100 per cent biodegradable cleanser that washes hair without stripping it. And it was dreamt up by Michael Gordon, the founder of famed hair empire Bumble and bumble, so you know it’s going to be good. The body lotion-esque consistency and the fact it doesn’t foam up take some getting used to, but stick with it – we promise the results are worth it. And in keeping with our recent resolve to limit use of single use plastics, the New Wash Club offers members a refillable dispenser that’s topped up whenever you’re low. Truly a hair revolution. It is lauded as much for its high-octane atmosphere as its unique cuisine and we couldn’t be more excited about this latest incarnation, which comes just in time for the festive season. Entered via a stunning spiral staircase, the restaurant spreads over an impressive 9,000 sq ft, with a theatre-style open kitchen and robata
grill, an eye-catching red marble sushi bar with bespoke lighting installation, and a lush living ceiling – the first of its kind in Covent Garden – planted with South American and Japanese plants. An open-air terrace offers panoramic views of the Piazza, while the private dining room features its own entrance and balcony. The menu will look familiar to fans
of the existing Heron Tower restaurant, but with a few exciting additions – we’re having a hard time choosing between the pork belly with butterscotch miso; scallops with vanilla, jalapeño, mango and aji amarillo; and octopus with aji panca, peppers and nori from the fiery robata grill…. 35 The Market, WC2E (020 3053 0000; sushisamba.com)

Caractère We have lunch at Emily Roux’s restaurant on one of the gloriously sunny October days within the first week of its opening. Expectations are high – with Emily’s name comes great promise (and for her, no doubt, pressure). Her debut venture is a collaboration with husband Diego Ferrari, who she met while training in Monaco at Alain Ducasse’s Le Louis XV. It’s actually Diego doing the cooking, with Emily focusing on front of house, but the menu has been designed and tested by both; perfectly blending their Italian and French culinary roots and focusing on different subtleties of flavour. The décor is simple and chic: marble tables, velvet-upholstered chairs and exposed brickwork are offset by cleverly placed gold-mirrored panelling and statement light fittings. With the autumn sunshine flooding through the large windows, everything gleams with possibility. The friendly front of house team talk us through the menu, which is divided into six sections varying in flavour intensity. First up, though, a platter of glorious canapés – the playful savoury Bourbon biscuit with sardine filling wins top marks for presentation. We start in earnest with cacio e pepe. Emily has told us that her husband’s take on this classic dish would be her last meal on Earth, so there’s no way we’d miss it. It is served here with ribbons of celeriac in place of pasta, and is excellent. As are the scallops we choose to accompany it. For mains, we opt for grilled monkfish, which comes served in a delicate raw citrus and aniseed dressing, and is exquisite. In contrast, ras el hanout gives the rack of lamb a
bold and punchy flavour. Each and every dish is matched with its own wine, all passionately introduced by the knowledgeable sommelier. Having abstained from eating cheese for a month, the sight of the vast round of Stichelton being wheeled up to a neighbouring table is irresistible, so we opt to share the cheese course, and go halves on the chocolate cake, which is, apparently, already a firm favourite with diners. It is indeed excellent, but almost finishes us off in all of its glorious gooiness. We vow that we will not eat for the rest of the day, but somehow succumb to the chocolate pizza, which comes at petit four time with our fresh mint tea. And we’re glad we made the space: it is curiously savoury yet sweet and rounds off the meal in the best possible way. The restaurant and its team certainly seem to have character in spades. We can’t wait to see how they fare. LSJ. 209 Westbourne Park Road, W11 (020 8181 3850; caractererestaurant.com)
When I was a child I wanted to be… a chef. When I was growing up my parents owned a restaurant and we lived directly above it. I first cooked… pavlova. It rose perfectly and I topped it with kiwi (a quintessential New Zealand fruit), passionfruit and strawberries. My kitchen hero is… Gary Skelton, the guy I trained under in Australia. Other than Gary, like-minded chefs like Nieves Barragan (of Sabor) and Stephen Harris (of The Sportsman). My fail-safe dinner party dish is… spaghetti alle vongole. My last meal would be… Jamón Ibérico as a bar snack, followed by BBQ prawns and a truffle gratin, and chocolate fondant with pistachio ice cream to finish – if we’re going for the whole deal! When I feel down I cook… pasta. Any type, as long as it’s handmade. My favourite London restaurant is… The River Café: it’s an institution. The cooking is simple, but their results are next level! Between now and New Year’s Eve, Cameron and the team will be joining numerous other eateries in supporting StreetSmart, by asking diners to donate a pound at the end of their meal to help change the lives of local homeless and vulnerable people. Now in its 21st year, the charity has raised over £8.5 million across the UK. For more details, see streetsmart.org.uk 10 Greek Street, W1D (020 7734 4677; 10greekstreet.com)

Ryvan Holder, Concierge Manager at The Crane Resort, Barbados shares his top island hot spots With its beautiful palm-fringed beaches and year-round sunshine, it’s no surprise Barbados is a popular paradise escape. But it’s absolutely worth taking a break from the sun lounger to explore. One of the best spots to discover the island’s rich colonial heritage is St. Nicholas Abbey, a Jacobeanstyle mansion and old plantation house with its own rum distillery. Following a museum tour, you can observe the rum-making process, sample a few varieties and take home your favourite! Shipwrecks lie in the island’s crystal-clear waters, where you can snorkel amongst shoals of glittering tropical fish and giant turtles. Take the plunge in style with a Jammin’ Catamaran Cruise, where you can enjoy unlimited rum punch as you sail the seas – Bajans know how to throw a good party! After a day of exploring, don’t miss the best night spots of St. Lawrence Gap. My favourites are McBride’s and The Cove. Foodies should definitely sample the local cuisine: a delicious mix of African, Indian, Creole and British influences. Head to Oistins Fish Fry for fresh-off-the-boat mahi mahi and snapper or try a traditional fried fish sandwich at Cutters bar (just next to Crane Beach). Or for the ultimate Bajan experience, savour our national dish – cou cou and flying fish – at our very own clifftop L’Azure restaurant, whilst enjoying a panoramic view of the stunning Atlantic coast. It is early in the morning in Lisbon and already the city’s narrow streets are buzzing with people. They are flitting in and out of proud, colourful buildings and sipping espresso at pavement cafés. Just down the road the bells are chiming in the church tower, while in the distance the Tagus Estuary shimmers in the morning sunshine and the imposing 25 de Abril Bridge (blink and you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in San Francisco) dominates the skyline – Lisbon in late summer couldn’t be more idyllic. Our base for a long weekend away is York House, a small and quaint boutique hotel housed in an old 17th century Carmelite convent. It is tucked into the eastern edge of the city’s upscale Lapa quarter: a quiet, leafy and residential area of Lisbon bordering the Tagus river. The somewhat unlikely name comes from the two Yorkshire women who ran the hotel in the late 19th century. The entrance is a surprise – tree canopied stone steps and high, pink-stucco walls ascend into an intimate cobblestone courtyard, fringed by a jungle of flowering trees and shrubs. Contemporary and unfussy, it isn’t hard to see that the hotel has focused on what the modern traveller needs: spacious rooms, airy communal spaces, good food and friendly and efficient service. Each of the suites and rooms are individually decorated and unique in style. We are in one of the more classic suites overlooking the courtyard. The traditional elements of the room are perfectly married with modern lighting and contemporary furnishings. A lattice work of ancient wooden beams screens the sleeping area from the living area, while allowing natural light to flood through the space (and ensuring that the luscious greenery of the courtyard and the apparently eternally bright blue sky can be seen from

the large and comfy bed – making prising yourself out of it a difficult task indeed). Full of characterful quirks, the interiors throughout the hotel feature antique furnishings, high vaulted corridors, marble flooring and traditional azulejo tiles, while the beautiful, leafy garden terrace is the perfect place to relax, read a book or sip on a chilled glass of Vinho Verde. A leisurely breakfast of warm, fresh bread, delicious homemade jams, scrambled eggs, bacon, fresh juice and pastries is served every morning in the restaurant, which spills out onto the courtyard. In the evenings, the restaurant is transformed into a formal dining space – there is nothing better than rewarding yourself with dinner here after a long day sightseeing (or should that read hill walking?) in the city. Open to locals as well as guests, it serves a simple but delicious menu of traditional Portuguese food. We enjoy several incredibly laid-back and romantic candlelit dinners here. The food is insanely good: be sure to try the prawns à lá guilho, grilled octopus and caramel chocolate mousse for dessert – all are not to be missed. In fact, we cannot find fault with anything at York House. With its quiet, traditional ambience, it is a haven from the outside world, and proves itself to be the perfect sanctuary during our stay. Lisbon may well be a small city, but its attractions are huge – the people, the food, the culture, the history, all add up to make the ultimate weekend getaway destination. Simply wandering around the streets of Lisbon at any time of day or night is magical.

Judith Blacklock is a floristry luminary and runs a comprehensive series of courses in her eponymous Knightsbridge flower school, including wreath-making masterclasses throughout November and early December. We asked the green- and nimble-fingered Judith for her pick of the best yuletide florals and foliage. What are the floral trends for Christmas 2018? Sustainability is a key element for Christmas this year. Glitz and baubles are less evident and the emphasis is on glorious woodland foliage, such as ivy and pine, with added detail provided by cones, seedpods, dried flowers and berries. Colours for this season are copper and brass and these can be incorporated into designs with baubles, ribbon, vases and fabric to give seasonal sparkle and interest.
How can we decorate with foliage indoors? An easy way to decorate the home is to cut branches and place them in a vase at the entrance. Holly from the garden never has enough berries, and it is good to leave some for the birds, so I buy Ilex verticillata (deciduous holly) from the florist to mix amongst my leaves. Alternatively, use berried sprays of Skimmia which is an easy to grow garden shrub. I love to decorate the

mantelpiece with branches of fragrant spruce. You could use those cut from the bottom of the Christmas tree! Intersperse them with thick candles, apples and cones, using foam in a shallow dish as a support. What do fresh flowers offer that faux arrangements don’t? Life and vitality – a warmth not obtainable in faux flowers. I am not against faux flowers, they certainly are useful, especially in hard-to-reach places which would be difficult to water, but they can never replace fresh flowers for bringing warmth and comfort into the home. What do you recommend to achieve that unmistakable Christmassy scent indoors? Ivy is available to all along riverbanks, in woods and growing up fences. Tall growing ivy produces wonderful fruits that turn black at Christmas, and are a delight to use. Quick growing Leylandii is also useful at this time, especially when mixed with other foliage with a contrasting form, such as Choisya ternata (orange blossom). Pine is one of my favourites; its long needles add distinction to any design of mixed foliage. Skimmia produces red berries which are wonderful mixed with other evergreens. Rosmarinus (rosemary) has a lovely fragrance, and has beautiful blue flowers that may be on show in December if the winter is mild. What can we expect from a wreath-making workshop? From one of my workshops you can expect to create a unique, larger than average circle of gorgeousness that will last well into the new year. You will then have the skill and knowledge to recreate one every year that follows. Anyone can become a wreath maker if they are given the right advice and a fully comprehensive handout to follow. 4-5 Kinnerton Place South, SW1X (020 7235 6235; judithblacklock.com)

“Why would you want to get from A to B through a humdrum corridor when you can go via a bridge, or a porthole, or a fireman’s pole?”
The site of a former MOT garage, on a quiet street in west London, offered the perfect opportunity for architect Alex Michaelis to create a dynamic family home filled with lateral light and space. The new build sits boldly amongst its comparatively lacklustre neighbours – namely threestorey office blocks – and its playfulness is immediate. “The soft curving shape of the house is a response to the hard jagged-edged buildings which surround the site,” Alex confirms. It stands out for all the right reasons. A contemporary take on Corbusien Modernism, with its sculptural and geometric forms, the curvy design is interrupted with dramatic glazing, inviting maximum daylight to penetrate the house’s challenging long and 64

narrow footprint. It’s also flipped upside down, which helps, with landscaped gardens on the roofs of its two voluptuous towers, not only elevating its outside space to the heavens, but offering Alex and his family spectacular city views. In fact, its curves are penetrated by regular rectangular and circular apertures along key view lines that respond to surrounding structures. Alex’s shrewd attention to detail continues indoors, too, as he describes how daylight reacts – and refracts – to the design. “Natural light flows in and around all the curves,” he says. “It floods in through the many glass roof lights, through the large porthole windows and through the floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors, which lead onto the pool courtyard… .” And when the sun sets? “At night, the artificial lighting creates magic. We had help from Sally Storey who is a lighting genius! We incorporated playful elements into the lighting on the glass bridge, for example, where cleverly concealed lights in the wood floor wash the space with ever-changing rainbow colours. It’s dynamic and fun.” The interior is every bit as fun as the property’s street view promises, engaging its inhabitants with intriguing

spaces accessed by unconventional means: why would you want to get from A to B through a humdrum corridor when you can go via a bridge, or a porthole, or a fireman’s pole? Alex’s childlike eye for design is utterly endearing, and his natural sense of play recalls the dream houses we all used to imagine and draw as children, without bounds. “Design doesn’t have to be too serious,” he enthuses. “Play is so important and playful elements are integral to the house; the Corian slide, which runs alongside the curved staircase, and the fireman’s pole for quick access to the ground floor, invite everyone to play.” Styling a home with such imposing architectural bones must come with its own set of challenges, but these are not necessarily limitations, according to Alex. Bespoke, semi-circular seating hugs the curved walls of the den while a rounded free-standing bath only reflects the bathroom’s swooping lines. The use of a neutral palette gives flow to the property’s open-plan living spaces and, importantly, allows its structural form to shine, both outside and in. “I like to bring nature in,” the architect adds, with a nod to the new build’s green credentials. “We used simple natural materials and finishes throughout; with off-white unfinished plaster on the walls and ceilings, Dinesen Douglas fir wood on the floors, white marble in the bathrooms and kitchen, and leather-clad handrails and door handles. The muted tones create a calm backdrop for the colourful artwork.” The art collection indeed adds contrasting colour pops to the mix, but beyond that it brings personality and a warm, homely feel. Unsurprisingly, it’s fresh, contemporary and playful. “There is a huge pink Harland Miller piece, Love Saves The Day, in the entrance hall,” says Alex. “A deep blue kinetic mobile by Daniel Chadwick gently spirals above the swimming pool, and a full-size wire frame sculpture of a grand piano and pianist by David Macilwaine stands in the front courtyard serenading visitors!” You wouldn’t expect anything less in this beautifully irregular abode. Area guide Primrose Hill Primrose Hill’s summit might sit at just 63 metres above sea level, but the views from the top are so expansive that they are famously protected. And it’s not just that virtually unrivalled vista that attracts the Capital’s literati and glitterati: from its brilliant location, to its pretty pastel-coloured houses and villagey vibe, there’s something pretty special about this NW postcode. It’s a little piece of countryside on the very doorstep of central London (and there’s no shame in admitting that, sometimes, you need to escape the bustle of our beloved city). Mix some pretty special properties with a quaint high street boasting the very best high-end boutiques, cafés, restaurants, wine bars and independent shops, and those lucky Primrose Hillbillies certainly seem to have it all. THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK
Bryn Williams Chef patron at Odette’s “As well as Odette’s being located in Primrose Hill, I live locally, so I certainly consider the area to be my London home. My favourite thing about it is the atmosphere: despite only being about 10 minutes from central London, you could easily think you were in a village, full of friendly locals, independent shops and plenty of greenery. I like to get my morning coffee at The Little One – they do such great coffee, the best I’ve come across in London. For breakfast or brunch, Greenberry Café serves the tastiest eggs Benedict in the area, but you have to get there early on the weekends as it’s a very popular choice! For an evening drink, The Engineer is a classic and proper pub, perfect for a pint at the end of the day. The best way to make the most of the area is definitely to walk up the hill to enjoy the spectacular views of the city. I’ve found that Primrose Hill has been a really great location for the restaurant over the years – we celebrated its 10-year anniversary last month, which is a fantastic achievement in the London restaurant industry. We wouldn’t have been able to reach it without a very loyal following from locals, but we equally see many people coming from the centre of town, especially those wanting a bit of an escape to a quieter area.” 130 Regent’s Park Road, NW1 (020 7586 8569; odettesprimrosehill.com)

Did you know? London’s skyline, so long dominated by St. Paul’s Cathedral – offering its promise of the afterlife – could have been overtaken by a resting place for bodies expectantly awaiting resurrection. In the early 1800s British industry was booming and London’s population was greater than that of any other city in the world. With that boom came the problem of what to do with the bodies of the dead. In 1831, inspired by the ancient Egyptians, architect Thomas Wilson suggested a pyramid shaped cemetery as the solution. Known as the Metropolitan Sepulcher, it was to be built on 18 acres of Primrose Hill, rising 94 storeys high with a capacity of up to 5 million corpses. Built from brick, with granite facings, it would feature a steam powered lift, a chapel and accommodation for a keeper, sexton and superintendent. It did not win the approval of the authorities and was never built – had it been, it would have stood not far short of The Shard, and almost as wide as it was tall.

From the agents... “Primrose Hill boasts large detached Victorian houses, many of which have been separated and renovated into flats. A one-bed flat currently sits between £500,000 and £700,000, while a two-bed is from £750,000 upwards. A terraced house starts at approximately £3.5 million, and a large house could be anything up to £20 million, presently. Family houses don’t come to the market often, so when they do, competition is high!” Ricky Dengel, Sandfords

The always-buzzing eatery serves up a comprehensive menu of traditional Greek fare, including kleftiko, papoutsakia and a rude-not-to moussaka, as well as fish and veggie dishes, charcoal grills and meze specials – little wonder it’s a firm favourite amongst Primrose Hill locals. “It’s friendly, hospitable and they only use the freshest ingredients,” says Jake. “It’s a great place to relax in with its light-filled, leafy, bohemian interior.” 89 Regent’s Park Road, NW1 (020 7586 7454; lemonia.co.uk) OKA, NW1 With so much to choose from at this pan-Asian and sushi restaurant, you’d be wise to take your time perusing its extensive menu whilst enjoying a sparkling sake. It’s very close to Regent’s Park and London Zoo, but the park itself is a personal favourite with its far-reaching views across London. The area also boasts some stunning period architecture and garden squares.” Emlyn Parks, Chestertons “Currently there are very few areas in London in which demand outweighs supply, however, Primrose Hill is one of these. SCHOOL OF LIFE Sebastian Hepher, Principal of Eaton Square Schools, discusses the benefits of attending an all-through school children of all ages with the skills and values that will prepare them for life.” Creating well-rounded individuals Preparing pupils for everything that life may present them with is very much at the heart of the school’s ethos. Whatever age the child, Hepher explains, parents entrusting their children to the care of Eaton Square School can be ensured that equal importance will be placed on intellectual, artistic, physical and musical pursuits throughout their educational journey: “We pride ourselves on making sure all our pupils are happy and confident, so they can progress and thrive as individuals.”
Choosing the right school for your child can be difficult. It’s their first step into the world of education and there are many factors you should take into consideration when evaluating options. Not only academic results, but also things like the quality of the facilities on offer, and whether the pupils are happy and the staff engaging. Worth considering are the many benefits of an all-through school. Something for everyone All-through schools combine at least two educational stages – usually primary and secondary – in one establishment. A number of schools also offer nursery classes and sixth forms, taking children right through from age two to age 18. Having welcomed its first pupils from the age of 11 into the newly opened upper school – the first co-ed private school to open in central London for decades – last September, Eaton Square School is now one such establishment. Principal, Sebastian Hepher explains: “Eaton Square School provides a seamless co-educational learning experience from the Early Years in our three central London nursery schools, through to the preparatory school in Belgravia and
now onto the upper school on Piccadilly. We carefully considered the benefits that continuous education brings – not only to the child, but to the whole family – and have created a vibrant co-educational school that educates your children right through their school career.”
Knowing what’s right Of course, no prospectus or website can ever truly convey what a school is really like; Hepher has this advice. “Make sure you do your research, establish your needs and take the time to visit all the locations you are considering – your gut instinct will point you to the right choice. After all, you are the experts when it comes to your own children.”
Reaping the benefits This model of schooling is still relatively unusual, but it is becoming increasingly favoured by educationalists. The most obvious advantage is that it eliminates the unsettling transition period between primary and secondary. “Transitioning from school to school is a big step in a child’s life. Our aim is to transform a stressful time into an adventure, where every child feels comfortable with their surroundings,” Hepher tells us. And there are other advantages, such as the fact that younger children benefit from having specialist language and science teachers on hand, and can enjoy access to the very best facilities. Hepher says: “Consistency is key in education: offering continuity in the formative years of a child’s life and a shared philosophy and ethos with teachers working together across different year groups, our school provides

Coping with emotional contagion You might worry about your child catching a nasty infection at school. But according to a 2016 study by the University of British Columbia, they can also catch the negative feelings of their teachers. The study found that students whose teachers were suffering from burnout or emotional exhaustion had higher levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. “Emotional contagion is the vibe you pick up from others that influences your own emotional state,” says Mira Schauble, a psychotherapist at The Ed Psych Practice. “It’s a natural social drive, so it has always been around. But because people are much more aware of it now, they’re addressing it directly.” Hilary Wyatt is one of them. As head of Eaton Square School, Kensington, she’s passionate about teachers (including herself) leaving a positive “emotional wake”. Her tactics include doing a mindfulness practice in staff meetings, so teachers don’t take their stress with them into the classroom. But emotional contagion can pass from child to child, too – as well as from parent to child. Hilary believes that teaching pupils emotional intelligence is key to preventing the former. That’s why hers do yoga for 45 minutes once a week, followed by 15 minutes of mindfulness. Year Ones have the school guinea pigs in class with them in the mornings, while Year Six have tea and toast with Hilary each Friday. There’s also circle time for children to talk about how they’re feeling and an emotion wheel on the wall with advice for what to do if they’re angry or sad. Preventing negative emotional contagion from parent to child starts with awareness, says Mira. “It’s normal that our nervous system activates – otherwise we’d be asleep all the time,” she says. “But if you’re stressed and angsty, everything from your heartbeat to your breath is affected. And a child can read that subconsciously.” If this happens, Mira recommends naming what’s happening so the child understands but doesn’t feel responsible. “For example, you could say, ‘Mummy’s a little stressed now and what helps me is to take three deep breaths so I can be calm.’ This way you’re creating awareness and modelling the strategies for calming your nervous system.” (theedpsych.com; eatonsquareschool.com)

THE HEAD
Jane Rogers The Cavendish School
How long have you been head at the school? Since April 2017. Previously I was at City of London School for Girls, where I was head of prep for seven years. How would you sum up the school in a sentence? A hidden gem; The Cavendish School is a place of calm, joy and ambition. What makes it different? The ability to combine joyful learning and high aspirations within a nonselective environment. We also make time for our pupils, getting to know them well as individuals.
How would you best describe your personal educational ethos? A desire to celebrate and learn from each other’s differences and strengths within a multi-faith, multicultural setting. Making the most of what London has to offer. Strengthening all areas of the curriculum for girls so they can open all doors to their futures – whatever they may hold.
How do you balance your extra-curricular activities with the academic side? Both are hugely important and develop together. Personal interests and skills benefit all areas of learning; for example, the links between learning an instrument and mathematical thinking are well known. On top of our outstanding music lessons, we offer a very wide range of extra-curricular clubs and activities, including circus skills, chess and cooking. CULTIVATING CREATIVITY Having expanded its facilities Hampstead Fine Arts College continues to help students aged 13 to 19 to achieve their full academic and artistic potential in an informal, collaborative environment atmosphere, believes Cave, which inspires a love of learning that extends well beyond formal exams and into adult life.
Tucked away behind wrought iron gates in a quiet corner of Belsize Park, Fine Arts College has an enviable reputation as a school that draws out students’ individual talents in an atmosphere that one parent has described as “industrious informality”. Alongside a full academic curriculum, it offers an exceptional range of art-based subjects – including fine art, textiles, film, photography and graphic design – with students’ work in these disciplines being recognised by institutions such as the Royal Academy of Arts. Unusually, there is no restriction on subject combinations, so students are free to create a study programme that is tailored to their strengths. An original vision Principal Candida Cave, a graduate of the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford, founded the Fine Arts College in 1978 with fellow artist Nicholas Cochrane. It started life as a specialist sixth form college for art and art history with just 20 pupils; numbers grew and in 1982 a full arts and humanities A Level curriculum was added. By the early 1990s, a GCSE programme was in place, and the college was thrilled to welcome its first
Year 9 pupils this September – a natural entry point to prepare for GCSEs. Fine Arts College also offers a Portfolio course, aimed at preparing students for Art Foundation. Its founders always saw the college as a bridge between school and university, a place that encouraged self-discipline and self-motivation, and this distinctive philosophy is still very much in evidence today. As Cave points out: “The informal nature of relationships between staff and students strengthens high expectations and encourages a rigorous approach to work.”
A unique ethos Entry to the College is based on academic and creative potential, rather than prior academic performance. The process varies slightly at GCSE, A Level and Portfolio stage, but references from previous schools and an informal interview play an important part. The College’s ethos is rooted in the belief that, with the right encouragement, students can flourish academically and creatively. The school prides itself on being able to identify and nurture talent that may have been overlooked in other school environments. Small class sizes, outstanding teaching and excellent pastoral care make this possible. And it is reflected in the impressive results achieved: this summer, students celebrated a nine per cent year-on-year improvement on A level results. Leavers have gone on to a wide range of prestigious destinations, including Russell Group and US universities and elite art colleges such as Central Saint Martins and Parsons School of Design in New York.
Outstanding teaching and facilities The students at Fine Arts College are fortunate to be taught by staff who, as well as being highly experienced educators, are often distinguished musicians, artists, filmmakers, writers and actors in their own right. And facilities at the college rival those at leading universities; this year saw the opening of a cutting edge new home for the Fashion and Textiles, and Media and Film Studies departments in a former interiors shop on England’s Lane. Classes are kept small, and the teaching atmosphere is informal and collaborative. It’s this open, energising

DIRECTORY
Q&A
Directory Recipe for success If all you want for Christmas is a brand new kitchen, ensure it is the ultimate multi-use space – both stylish and practical – with these top tips for developing a dream design
Where once it was a hidden away workspace, households are gravitating more towards the kitchen as a place to spend time together. The modern kitchen is a place to relax, to entertain and last but not least, a place to cook: very much the heart of the home. If you’re designing a new kitchen, much rests on getting things right. Rebecca Malyon, head of design at Neptune kitchens has these tips on making the most of your space while maximising storage and functionality. Start by considering whether your current space works or if you are able to open it up or extend it. A larger space will allow you to create an open-, or broken-, plan design with different ‘zones’: “Factoring in primary zones for cooking and socialising allows the kitchen to become a multipurpose hub, bringing the whole family together. It also lets you make the absolute most of a room: every nook and cranny is explored.” When you’re sure of the space you have to work with, her advice is to really think about how you, and your family, want to use it, as well as asking yourself questions like who you cook for, what you cook and how you cook: “It’s so important to have an idea of
Dr. Richard Mitzman Mitzman Architects LLP what you want before approaching a designer,” she explains. Don’t forget that a kitchen doesn’t have to be fitted. Freestanding, individual furniture pieces can be really practical, not only looking beautiful but giving mountains of storage space, too. And consider countertop cabinets, which allow you to keep things like toasters, kettles and coffee machines plugged in and easy to use, but hidden behind the bifold doors when you aren’t using them. Consider incorporating an island or peninsula – not simply the ultimate multi-tasking space, but a good way to delineate the kitchen space without cutting it off. “Having a kitchen island has huge benefits that go further than just the additional work surface. A beautifully designed island also turns into a beautiful piece of furniture with ample storage, if used wisely you can make your kitchen work efficiently for you,” says Rebecca. When you have a clearer idea about what you want in the kitchen, you can start thinking about how it will look. Don’t be afraid to do something different. Colour, on walls or cabinets, suggests Rebecca, is “a very clever tool” for transforming the way a space feels. “Dark greys, brave navy and, more recently, moss greens set a strong mood. They have instant impact but in a more dramatic way than the lighter end of the spectrum, especially when paired with contrasting hardware or a spectacular stone worktop.” (neptune.com/kitchens)

After several years carving marble in Italy, wanting to push my work in a spatial direction, I enrolled on a part-time degree course in architecture. I qualified in January 2000.

Property news Celebrating 20 years of TK International
Q+A AS K TH E AGENT
60 seconds with
Jeremy Karpel Years in the business? I’ve been an agent in Hampstead for 31 years, and this year, my partner Daniel Epstein (pictured) and I are celebrating TK International’s 20th anniversary. There are only a handful of old school agents left; I’m a firm believer that there’s no school like the old school for professionalism and knowledge. I love London because… as Dr. Johnson says: “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.” The history, the charm, the architecture, the parks, the restaurants, the cafés, the great shopping and the international vibe – and Hampstead is simply a microcosm of London. First London home? A two storey maisonette in Hatch End, which I moved into the day after I came back from my honeymoon. It all seems very provincial now… If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… a film production designer. I worked in the film industry as a trainee set designer for Warner Bros. in the 1980s. Favourite London street? Jermyn Street. I used to work there in Alfred Dunhill. This last peaceful vestige of a more elegant time is full
up watching the ducks on Hampstead Ponds with the incongruous parakeets flying over South Hill Park.
of the finest shirt- and bootmakers, tailors and fine art galleries that you could find anywhere in the Capital. Favourite client? I’ve had the pleasure of dealing with so many wonderful clients, some of whom I still deal with today – and in some cases I deal with both their children and grandchildren. Favourite place? Cecconi’s in Mayfair, with its wonderful, ever-present maître d’, Giacomo Maccioni overseeing the always flawless service. My favourite place to grab a coffee is… Gail’s in Hampstead, which doubles up as my second office. It’s a great place to meet people; it serves sublime coffee and consistently good food.
My hidden talent is… not so hidden. I’m a sketch artist and illustrator and have exhibited my work. My last exhibition was at Tom Conti’s home last year, the proceeds of which went to Marie Curie and the Hampstead Arts Festival. Period property or new-build? I love all architecture, my degree is in architecture and interior design. But striking contemporary with integrity is my favourite. Take one person, dead, alive or fictional, out in London – who and where? David Niven for lunch at Le Gavroche. Aliens attack – which London landmark would you save? I’d save St. Paul’s Cathedral: Wren’s masterpiece. Creature comfort? Fortnum & Mason’s thick cut marmalade.
If I need head space… I go for a long walk over Hampstead Heath and end
Paying it forward Chestertons has funded a ground-breaking programme set up by St. Mungo’s, which recruits volunteers to help tackle the number of rough sleepers in the Capital. The role of a full-time coordinator has been fully financed by the London estate agents and has proved vital to the charity’s First Response scheme. Q. What’s the etiquette around taking my own photos when viewing a property? A. “A good agent will ensure a property is fully photographed from all angles, and those images should be available online or in the brochure. But if there is something a potential buyer wishes to photograph, they should ask the permission of the owner, if present, or the agent. In most cases, a polite request will be agreed to, though this may be refused if there are issues of privacy and/or security.”

It’s that bit more inconvenient when it means you’ll arrive at your new property a whisker before midnight, fully loaded with luggage, but no keys.
