s I write this, the sun is shining, but there’s a definite feel of autumn in the air, and personally, I’m delighted. A new season provides the perfect excuse for a restyle. This year go loud and proud for a warm and welcoming vibe at home – check out our interiors section for inspiration. Speaking of home, I’m taking the nights drawing in as the green card to cosy up in front of the telly – on my list this month are Carnival Row and Temple, both of which star our cover girl Chloe Pirrie. You can see what she had to say about working on the shows – and so much more – in our exclusive interview. Night on the sofa not for you? Worry not, with Cocktail Week and The London Restaurant Festival coming to the Capital this month, you could be out on the tiles every day from now until November. Brace yourselves…

BOOK
Faded Glamour by Pearl Lowe
Published 8 October Minimalists, avert your eyes. This month, rock ’n’ roll vintage queen Pearl Lowe invites us into her exquisitely styled home that celebrates the once-plush – a cacophony of colour and pattern including lived in and loved velvet armchairs, too beautiful for the scrap heap. We get a peek into the similarly glamorous pads of her fashionable inner circle, too. “To me,” she says, “an object that was once the height of elegance but is now a bit battered has far more allure than something brand new.” Hardback, £19.99 (rylandpeters.com)

Costume at the National Theatre
From 3 October | Wolfson Gallery The NT invites us to delve into the creative world of those who source, construct, alter, repair, organise and maintain costumes for over 20 new productions each year, including War Horse, Follies, and Antony and Cleopatra. The exhibition visits each stage of the process, from design and construction to dressing and repairs. The show’s designer, Tom Paris, says it “offers the chance to get up close and to touch some of the most exciting and interesting items from the extensive collection.” An unmissable insight into the extraordinary work that goes into even the most ordinary costumes. 14 October-9 November | The Old Vic Matt Smith and Claire Foy reunite in Duncan Macmillan’s unconventional love story that follows a young couple who want a child, but who, in a culture of terrorism, political tension and global anxiety, are running out of time. They want a child for the right reasons, but they just don’t know what those right reasons are. Poignant, funny, outgoing and brutally honest, we follow their story as they’re propelled into an uncertain future in the hope their relationship will survive. Drowning out the
NOISE
As she appears on screen in Carnival Row and Temple, Chloe Pirrie talks accolades, expectations and staying grounded in the real world

f you’re watching Carnival Row, Amazon Prime’s steam-punk fantasy, or Temple, Sky One’s remake of critically acclaimed Norwegian TV Series Valkyrien, you’ll know London-based Scottish actor Chloe Pirrie’s face. That’s if you didn’t already, of course. Her resume takes in everything from War and Peace and The Crown to Misfits and Black Mirror. It was arguably her role as Shell in the independent feature of the same name that first got her noticed by the critics, though. The film, which tells the story of a girl who lives with her father in a remote gas station in the Scottish Highlands, won Best Film at the Torino Film Festival in 2012 and saw Chloe win Best Newcomer at the British Independent Film Awards the following year, and resulted in her being named as one of the Screen International Stars of Tomorrow 2013. I wonder how these accolades have impacted on her career? “It’s funny this stuff,” she remarks. “There is something absurd about it. The fact that you are the most promising
newcomer, it’s like, well, I’m no longer a newcomer, is that it? And have I broken the promise? It can be very difficult, that industry noise – the expectations and the pressures, because it is hard enough just walking into audition rooms and trying to figure out a script, or trying to work out how to be convincing as a person. And if you add into it all of this expectation, I do not know where that leaves you. It doesn’t leave you with a lot of space to breathe,” she shrugs. That’s not to say that she didn’t appreciate the accolades. “Receiving that award was just one of the most extraordinary things that has ever happened to me. And I felt such a sense of achievement from that alone. You have to take these things as a real gift, because it is a lovely thing that people believe in you,” she assures me. “And it means that somebody might see you for something because they go, ‘oh yes, she got that, and she was in that film and it was very good…’ It’s another way for your agent to unlock doors.” Though it may have opened doors and presented opportunities, Chloe says she is a long way from being able

to pick and choose when it comes to the jobs she accepts. “Occasionally one goes through phases where one can make some choices, but generally I sort of see it as what chooses me,” she explains. Where there is a choice, “the main thing is writing – if something is not well written I don’t engage with it, because I just feel like I cannot see where I can put my work in it.” It is not, she admits, an infallible method: “Of course, you can get things wrong… You know, sometimes you turn away from a project, and it goes on to be made, and you go, oh, yeah, that’s not what I read. But then I just think, OK, that wasn’t for me, it didn’t speak to me at that stage, and that’s OK, because they found the story that they needed to make, and you can’t be right for every job.”
42
fabricmagazine.co.uk
So no regrets for the jobs she didn’t take, but how about those she did? Absolutely not, she tells me. “The joy is in making it, and I very much try to hang on to that. You do the job, and you say yes to the things you like, and if you believe in it, then if people don’t like it, that’s not something that is in your control, in a way.” She is, of course, very much hoping that Temple will be well received. Starring Mark Strong and Carice Van Houten, the series tells the story of Daniel, a talented surgeon whose world is turned upside-down when his wife develops a lifethreatening illness. When conventional options for treatment run out, he refuses to accept the cards he’s been dealt and starts a literal ‘underground’ clinic in the vast network of

tunnels beneath Temple tube station. Chloe plays Karen, a police officer who is trying to work out what is going on. Speaking about the series, she says: “It’s an interesting one, because it is funny, but it is also quite touching. It’s a bit of a yarn – it goes off on a lot of tangents. But it should be a good watch. It is very entertaining, and moving in parts as well. And it was a lot of fun to film.” Chloe believes that in recent years television has presented actors with more incredible opportunities than ever before. “It can just be so amazing how TV shows are crafted and put together. We are making so much more TV now and the quality is so high. A series is like a ten-hour film now. And the same directors and producers are moving between TV and film, so the differences are not as clear-cut as they used to be.” A perfect example of this is, she says, Carnival Row, in which she plays Daliah. “It was really enjoyable to do because the material is so fun, and the world that they have created is so incredible and giant, and it has so much potential in it. And the designs are amazing too; the costume and make up departments were incredible. It was a real kind of transformation role, I think.” A drawback of filming this type of TV epic is perhaps the length of the shoot? “Part of the challenge is to overcome the feeling of being on something for months on end and feeling not as connected to it as you were,” Chloe explains, thoughtfully. “In film, I love the fact that, generally speaking, it is a finite kind of thing – just five weeks, or six weeks or however long the shoot is – and then you have made something. In some ways it can feel when you are filming like it is a more free artistic experience. With TV, it’s not boredom at all, but I suppose it’s like a repetitive strain or something… It’s good discipline and it is really good for your muscles as an actor.” What about theatre – is that something Chloe would like to do more of? “It’s not a conscious thing, but I seem to be working more on screen. Again, it is that point about what has chosen me,” she says. Pausing to think, before adding: “I feel like there is a point to be made with this, because theatre is not well paid, and it is very difficult to live off theatre alone… Even if you are working at the highest level in some of the best theatres in the country, you would still be on equity minimum wage, and when that is over and the play is finished, that is it, you don’t get any royalties or anything. So I feel like there is a buy-out with theatre, and that is a significant part of it that I don’t think people talk about very much. You know, theatre is amazing and I love it and I want to do it, but sometimes you cannot afford to do it. And that is a bigger conversation probably, about class in our industry and generally… And there is probably not much that can be done about that. But I would love to do a play, the right play, something brilliant.”
“I FEEL LIKE THERE IS A POINT TO BE MADE, BECAUSE THEATRE IS NOT WELL PAID, AND IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO LIVE OFF THEATRE ALONE…”
It is a discussion that leads Chloe on to the cost of living generally, but especially in London. “It is already so much more unaffordable than it was when I moved down, and it was expensive then,” she explains, sadly. “I wouldn’t have been able to go to drama school with the current prices of rent and stuff. I don’t know where that is going, and it makes me a bit sad really, that potentially it is a bit of a talent drain, because it is becoming more of a rarefied experience to live here. And I love London. I love the fact that we have such a diversity of cultures, you could probably say that about most capital cities, but I feel like London really embraces everything – the food, the languages we hear walking down the street. It is so brilliant, the energy of the place…” The perfect place to keep you grounded in real life, you could say. “I feel it is very important to stay grounded in the real world and keep developing yourself as a person outside of acting,” Chloe nods. “Because then you have things to draw on to make interesting choices and have a point of view when you are reading a script, or working out what the motivation is for a character doing something.” This is, she thinks, one of the most important lessons she has learnt since she started acting. “And discovering ways to drown out the industry noise,” she adds. “Because it will deafen you if you let it take over. I’ve realised that the last couple of years, and that I have to protect myself and protect the artist in me. Because that is business, that is commerce and it is not why I became an actor in the first place.” All episodes of Temple are available on Sky and Now TV. Carnival Row is available on Amazon Prime Video.

Palones
Check out gorgeous new Londonbased fashion label Palones, which made its debut in September. Having launched with a capsule collection of 64 garments, designed for work, fun and special occasions, 12 new pieces will be introduced every month to work alongside the existing collection. The styles come with clever details such as interchangeable belts and reversible coats, but what we love most is the fact that everything is made using regenerated or stock fabrics and with hero pieces restricted to extremely limited runs. “Palones is about positivity, from how we design and manufacture our clothes to how we live our lives. In a world where waste is the enemy, our aim is to source the very best existing stock fabrics and produce small, exclusive batches,” explains Dave Sullivan, marketing director. These are clothes for life, not for landfill. Prices range from £35 for a t-shirt to £250 for a coat, available at palonesofficial.com

need no sales pitch when it comes to acupuncture’s benefits – in the past it has helped me to ease the horrors of morning sickness and repair a painfully cricked neck, but how does it compare to cosmetic procedures in the pursuit of eternal youth? Practitioner Melissa Day believes that it is better than Botox, and an altogether more indulgent treatment at that. I’m game to give it a go. Prior to my appointment I complete a thorough health questionnaire so that Melissa can get an idea about what I would like to achieve and whether there are any contraindications. When we meet in the plush treatment room at St. John’s Wood’s Aura Dental we continue the consultation in some depth, helping Melissa to put together a treatment plan designed to work on my appearance as well as my general health. I then hop on the bed and she sets to work applying the needles to my face and head – there are over 50 when all is done, but I feel no discomfort. Cocooned in a warm blanket, I enjoy an indulgent hand massage and am then left to relax while the acupuncture works its magic. Afterwards, I’m treated to a lymphatic drainage massage focusing on my face, neck, shoulders and head. It is divine and I don’t want it to end. I am desperate to sit up and take a look in a mirror, though, and when the time comes I am not disappointed. My skin is glowing, lines are diminished and the contours of my face look more defined. Everybody I meet comments that I am looking well. And the results improve over the coming days. It is quite extraordinary and I will certainly be back for more. LSJ Consultation, £75, Ritual, £300 for 2 hours. Melissa practices from Aura Dental, Chalbert Street, NW8 and 58 South Molton Street, W1K, to book, contact info@niroshini.com. Dinny Hall Look out for an exciting collaboration between The National Portrait Gallery and one of our favourite London jewellers this month. To mark the opening of the gallery’s Pre-Raphaelite Sisters exhibition, Dinny Hall has designed a collection celebrating the work of women involved in the artistic movement. The collection features two lines: White Petals, in sterling silver, influenced by the white petals and blossom that often feature in the backdrop of the artworks, and Sun Beams, in 22K gold vermeil, inspired by the sunlit otherworldly context of the movement as a whole. Together the lines celebrate the form and femininity of the female sitter and their ethereal surroundings. The collection costs from £65 and is available through The National Portrait Gallery store from 17 October and in Dinny Hall stores and at Liberty from 25 October (dinnyhall.com; npgshop.org.uk)

ack in 2017, locals including Eddie Izzard, Paul Simonon, Cerys Matthews, and my dear old dad were fighting to save the 150-year Kensington Park Hotel. One of the Capital’s oldest live music venues, it hosted Tom Jones’ first ever London gig and was also a favoured hangout of The Clash in the seventies, but it was facing an uncertain future in the hands of its new owner. Eventually, Harcourt Inns (of The Coach in Clerkenwell and The Hero of Maida) stepped in to save the venue and it has just reopened with ex-St. John chef Ruairidh Summers overseeing the new food menu. Everything has been beautifully refurbished with a lively pub area downstairs (which my dad would be delighted to see is offering live music nightly) and an elegant upstairs dining room. Designed by Liana Braune of Zaffera London, it features red leather banquettes, dark panelled walls and dramatic velvet draped windows. The menu is small but well thought out and it doesn’t take us long to greedily make our selections. I start with the mysterious ‘duck egg mojana’, which transpires to be toasted ciabatta topped with a fried egg and herby air-dried tuna. It is unusual but so, so tasty. My partner’s delicious Hereford beef fillet is served à la carpaccio – rare and thinly sliced, tossed with anchovy and dill. Next up, I tuck into braised lamb shoulder served with harissa, tabbouleh and crème fraiche. The phrase ‘falls off the bone’ springs to mind, but when there is no bone, all the better. In fact, my son comments: “it’s so tender I’m sinking into
the chair”. He has heartily ‘borrowed’ from my plate whilst being in steak heaven with his own beautifully seasoned onglet steak and excellent chips. We are firm believers in always finding room for dessert, so baked cheesecake with Cognac-soaked sultanas, and warm, freshly baked Madeleines finish off a fine meal. The wine list offers an excellent selection by the glass and the bottle and the service is friendly and relaxed. With a good playlist, atmospheric lighting and such excellent cooking, this hidden gem is well worth seeking out. BP 139 Ladbroke Grove, W10 (020 7199 7240; thekph.co.uk)

LONDON FOODIE
Victoria Paltina founder Haya
When I was a child I wanted to be… a ballet dancer. From a young age I trained at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Moscow before moving to the UK.
Mix this: Breakfast Martini It’s Cocktail Week from 4-13 October, so what will you be sipping? We’ve sought inspiration from internationally renowned mixologists Joe and Daniel Schofield. They’ve worked at some of the best bars in the world, from the American Bar at The Savoy, to the Tippling Club in Singapore, and their reputation for creating superlative cocktails has led to numerous awards. This month sees the launch of their new book Schofield’s Fine and Classic Cocktails (£15.99, Kyle Books), with recipes for 100 classic cocktails, re-made with contemporary ingredients and with guest recipes from some of the world’s leading bartenders. Here, they share one of their favourites.
The first thing I cooked was… sunny side up eggs.
INGREDIENTS 50ml (1¾fl oz) Tanqueray gin | 15ml (½fl oz) triple sec – Cointreau | 15ml (½fl oz) lemon juice | 1 bar spoon (5ml or 1⁄6fl oz) thin-cut orange marmalade Glassware: martini glass Ice: served without Garnish: shredded orange peel Preparation: long shake
“The Breakfast Martini was created in 1996 at The Lanesborough Hotel in London, when the legendary Italian bartender, Salvatore Calabrese, was persuaded by his wife to swap his usual breakfast of an espresso for one of toast and marmalade. A few hours later, in the Library Bar, this cocktail was born and instantly became a modern classic. This recipe is kindly provided by Salvatore himself.”
METHOD Add all the ingredients to a shaker and mix to incorporate the marmalade into the other ingredients. Add ice and shake. Strain into a chilled martini glass, garnish with orange peel and serve.
My kitchen heroes are… my grandmothers – they both always have full fridges of food and something hot in the oven. My fail safe dinner party menu is… a whole grilled fish, served with big bowls of Mediterranean salads for everyone to share. For me, the best dinner parties are the simplest. My last meal on earth would be… my grandmother’s ricotta pancakes, which in Russian are called “syrniki”. When I feel down… I don’t cook, I order pizza. My favourite London restaurant is… Barrafina or The Barbary. The food is always impeccable and they both have such a vibrant atmosphere. My ultimate London day consists of… Barry’s Bootcamp in the morning, emails over breakfast, meetings at Haya and then evening catch-ups with friends, always over dinner.

Farhri Whether you like it bitter or sweet, Chocolate Week this month gives us the opportunity to celebrate all things cocoa. We’ll be indulging with a few treats from Farhri. The Londonbased artisan confectioner was launched over 15 years ago, but has just unveiled a new richer chocolate recipe that is totally free from palm oil. We love the handpainted Bonbonnières, which make gorgeous gifts. A new taste of the Lakes
Set in 12 acres of landscaped gardens perched above Windermere, the highly acclaimed Linthwaite House Hotel boasts views to die for. The 36-bedroom boutique hotel was given a multimillion pound facelift last year, and things are set to get even more exciting this month when Michelinstarred chef Simon Rogan takes over the restaurant.
The chef, who is recognised as one of the pioneers of the farm-totable movement, opened his first restaurant, L’Enclume, in Cartmel in The Lake District back in 2002. The new restaurant will be called Henrock, derived from a rocky outcrop on the lake, known as Hen Rock, which is often visible from
the terrace of Linthwaite House. Head chef Brian Limoges will lead the kitchen team. Working together, the two chefs will use local produce along with items from Simon’s own farm, Our Farm, in Cumbria. However, in a step away from L’Enclume, Roganic, Aulis and Rogan & Co., where the focus is deeply rooted in British cooking and ingredients, Henrock will also lean heavily on influences, techniques and produce discovered on the chefs’ travels around the globe, including in Asia where Simon has recently opened Roganic and Aulis in Hong Kong. It promises to be food worth travelling for. For more details, see henrock.co.uk
Inner beauty in Bangkok Thailand’s colourful capital is sprawling, with a population more than forty times that of its second city Chiang Mai, so it’s no surprise that at times it can feel chaotic and frenetic. Find some headspace in the heart of the metropolis at the brand new Mövenpick BDMS Wellness Resort. Nestled centrally, in the heart of Sukhumvit, the peaceful resort is surrounded by 1.2 acres of lush greenery, with trees dating back over a century. Healthy living is the hotel’s focus – guest rooms come equipped with yoga mats and a dedicated health and fitness TV channel; a menu of organic food is offered in the resort’s restaurant, Tamarind Natural Dining; and the fitness
centre features state-of-the-art workout equipment. But perhaps most exciting is the partnership with BDMS Wellness Clinic, offering guests the opportunity to visit the clinic, adjacent to the hotel, for a range of preventive healthcare treatments including physiotherapy, digestive wellness, dental and fertility treatments. “With travellers placing more value on health and wellness than ever before, we are very excited to bring this innovative new concept to the market,” says Lindsay MaddenNadeau, director of well-being at Accor. We think it heralds a whole new era in holistic hospitality. For more information, see movenpick.com
“With a superb collection of Michelin-starred and independent restaurants, a fantastic array of independent and designer shopping, art galleries and parks, Edinburgh has so much more to offer than the castle. Amongst the city’s hidden gems are the Botanical Gardens in Inverleith, a beautifully quiet spot where you can enjoy the autumnal colours. If you like that sort of thing, don’t miss Dunbars Close Garden, a 17th century city garden tucked away from the hive of activity on the Royal Mile. Nearby, The Real Mary King’s Close offers tours of a recently discovered residential street under the Royal Mile – well worth a visit. You really can’t leave the city without a visit to Diagon House on Victoria Street, off George IV Bridge, it’s a fascinating gift and antique curiosities shop. The inspiration behind J.K Rowling’s Diagon Alley, it sits in Edinburgh’s Old Town, where you can also take a free, themed walking tour that offers a fascinating insight in to the inspirations behind Harry Potter. Well known for our festivals, in October we welcome both The Scottish International Storytelling Festival and the Big Big Gin Festival. On the theme of gin, if cocktails are your thing, head to the InterContinental Edinburgh The George hotel’s Printing Press Bar & Kitchen. With its highly innovative, literary-inspired cocktail menu it is the city’s reigning Cocktail Bar of the Year. The hotel, located right in the heart of the city centre, has recently undergone a major refurbishment and is the only UK InterContinental outside of London, making it a great base for any city visit.” (0131 225 1251; edinburgh. intercontinental.com)

FALLING FOR NEW ENGLAND
New England conjures images of picket fences, Anne of Green Gables and stunning coastal reaches. Covering six states, it’s impossible to see it all in one holiday, but Relais & Châteaux’s various properties offer one way to pack in some sights, and to do so in style by Becky Pomfret

e land in Boston early in the evening and drive the short distance to Lexington, where we check in to our cute and cosy room in The Inn at Hastings Park – the perfect pitstop for weary travellers. Built in the 19th century, the Inn has been lovingly and sympathetically refurbished with locally sourced wallpaper and furniture, along with modern touches like Smeg fridges in the suites. Bathrooms are stocked with full-size Molton Brown products, which is a welcome nod to being that little bit more environmentally-friendly. Service here feels very personal: I’m told that when parents and their children use the hotel as a stop-over for visiting Harvard, staff will leave a university baseball cap on the bed. The hotel's restaurant, Town Meeting, also acts as a community hub offering cooking classes and wine-tasting sessions. You can’t stay in Lexington without taking a historical, guided trolley tour with Liberty Ride, so on our first morning we climb aboard the quaint tram and set off on a 90-minute ride around the area, accompanied by our very knowledgeable and funny tour guide, Marsha. We discover so much about the history of the region, learning about the Battle of Lexington and Concord as well as about life in Colonial America. The highlight for me, though, is seeing the home of Louisa May Alcott, where she wrote Little Women – it quite turned my brain. Sadly, we leave pretty Lexington all too quickly, but we are excited to make our way to the USA’s smallest state, Rhode Island, and our next stop, Ocean House Hotel. This historical building in Watch Hill was recently rebuilt, almost brick by brick, with phenomenally respectful attention to detail. It is beautiful and charming in a quietly elegant way, and offers fabulous views over the Atlantic Ocean. Check-in is swift and professional, and the friendly staff are all passionate about the hotel and its history. The room, when we get to it, is huge, with the deepest bath I’ve ever seen. Every day when we return, we discover little personal touches: a lens cloth next to my glasses, a screen cleaner by the laptop, lavender salts for the bath, a bookmark next to my book. These small details make the stay truly memorable. The exterior of the hotel is stunning, with a wrap-around terrace for dining al fresco and a pristine croquet lawn where you can take a private lesson with world pro croquet
player, Stephen Morgan (aka Croquet Steve). Inside there is a swimming pool and world-class spa, as well as the Center for Wine & Culinary Arts, where we are lucky enough to be cooked for by Chef Tim Meyers. The fine weather means we are able to take a yacht trip around the harbour with Barton & Gray Mariners Club (these can be arranged by the hotel) and we are treated to an entertaining couple of hours looking at the beautiful boats in the harbour and sampling the excellent local wine. Some of the properties here are spectacular – we can’t help but gawp at Taylor Swift’s huge home! The weather turns the next day, so we borrow one of the hotel’s Mercedes to take a drive around the area. We enjoy a stunning dinner at sister hotel and restaurant,

The Weekapaug Inn, situated on Quonochontaug Pond. The Pond House Dining Experience offers ‘pond-to-plate’ or ‘pasture-to-plate’ specialities paired with Louis Roederer Champagne. The horizontal rain means we aren’t able to eat outside, but the food is divine, nonetheless. Indeed, the hotel feels all the cosier in the inclement weather. Offering many opportunities to go fishing and clamming, it would be the perfect base for families who enjoy the outdoors. There is even an on-site naturalist who can take guests out on the pond (which is bigger than Central Park) returning them to a warming hot chocolate in front of an open fire. The next and final stop on our whirlwind New England tour is Nantucket Island, a tiny, isolated island off Cape Cod, Massachusetts. To my jaded London eyes, Nantucket Town resembles a model village. On arrival by ferry (top tip: get in the queue early to grab front seats for the best view), it’s striking how different the architectural style here is to that in the UK. The natural habitat is the number one priority here and any building work has to be approved by the local Historical Society; 70 per cent of the land on the island can’t be built on in response to a bid to preserve the habitat. There are consequently miles of gloriously empty beaches and quiet country roads. Our new home is The Wauwinet, a short drive from the centre of town. As Nantucket’s only member of Relais & Châteaux hotels, the hotel is known worldwide for its outstanding service and cuisine, and has recently undergone a multi-million-dollar renovation. Accommodation is offered in luxury rooms and quaint cottages, offering impressive views of Nantucket Bay, where the spectacular sunsets are very Instagram-worthy. We spend our first evening dining on Wagyu beef and

lobster rolls at Topper’s Restaurant, before sleeping like babies in our rose-covered cottage. Nantucket Town is a pottering sort of place: we pass happy hours popping in and out of the myriad high-end boutiques and spend time yacht-spotting from harbourside restaurant CRU, whilst sipping on delicious ‘Crucomber’ cocktails and tucking into local fish dishes. A quick visit to Nantucket’s fascinating Whaling Museum, where you can learn about the history of the region as a 19th century whaling hub, is well worth the time, too. Our final adventure, a Great Point natural history tour, takes us on a four-wheel drive safari of the Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge at the northernmost point of the island. We are the only people on the beach there, and delightedly watch playful and curious seals frolicking in the water. It’s lovely to see how protected nature is on the island – we can only access a small part of the sand dunes here because five miles of them are closed in order to protect a pair of nesting birds. Holiday sadly over, we take a hair-raising but mercifully quick internal flight back to Boston in a nine-seater plane, distracting ourselves from the apparent perils with plans for a return visit, soon.

THE ART OF PAPER
As the design world turns its focus on International Wallpaper Week (7-13 October), we uncover this season’s new releases that offer a highbrow arty appeal: innovative design and materials that think outside the box, sitting somewhere between wallcoverings and visual art. It’s time to up our wallpaper game and take inspiration from the gallery space by Ali Howard
Different strokes
Blackpop launches a series of bespoke wall murals at this month’s Decorex International (6-9 October). Taking their delightfully punky and painterly papers a step further, these bigimpact wallcoverings are expertly crafted to meet the practical and aesthetic needs of individual spaces: made to fit entire walls or designed as panels, you can create a focal point with your mural just as you would with framed artwork. Designed in collaboration with Sir John Soane’s Museum, Hampton Hex (above) is an opulent explosion of colour: neoclassicism meets Jackson Pollock. Available also in velvet or silk to add inviting texture to our four walls. £90 per m2 (blackpop.co.uk)

To the wild
Divine Savages is a London-based husband and husband team known for their daring and glamorous homewares. This month sees the design duo collaborate with the Natural History Museum to bring us five all-new wallcoverings – along with matching fabrics and cushions – inspired by the museum’s collection of weird and wonderful flora and fauna. Forbidden Bloom, a glorious cacophony of bold and colourful botanicals, pays homage to the Bauer brothers’ infamous illustrations of the natural world. Look closely and you’ll spot slithering serpents amongst the florals, adding an air of menace to the prettiest pinks and lilacs. From £150 (divinesavages.com)

Natural beauty
Belgian brand Omexco offers luxurious textile wallcoverings that take inspiration from nature’s rugged landscapes. Also at Decorex this October, they’ll be showcasing two new environmentally friendly collections, Portfolio and Aruba. Named after the island in the Caribbean sea, Aruba celebrates, in three dimensions, nature’s seemingly endless colour palette. Here, natural materials – think waterlily and raffia in blue, green and beige – are expertly woven to reflect the island’s sea and sand in imperfect horizontal lines. With its rich and varied texture, and its colourway of ocean-bright teals and emeralds, this tactile wallcovering lends a contemporary art aesthetic. From £44 (omexco.com; decorex.com)
Paper cuts
In a literal interpretation of wallpaper as art, and to celebrate 150 years since the French artist’s birth, Murals Wallpaper launches a new collection inspired by Henri Matisse’s iconic cut-outs. The brand, who use only eco-friendly materials, and who custom make to order (thus cutting down on waste) are as passionate about sustainability as they are about design. Here, Matisse’s abstract shapes are reinterpreted for our walls in either eye-catching smaller repeat patterns or oversized bold motifs. In various earthy-toned colourways, the collection brings gallery-worthy interest to our living spaces, whether confined to a feature wall or all-over for maximum impact. £36 per m2 (muralswallpaper.co.uk)
Off the wall
Making their debut at Decorex, Belfast-based Vacarda Design focus on bespoke finishes and wonderfully tactile surfaces. The new design studio, who also create tapestries and decorative artworks, will be unveiling artisan wallcoverings that playfully reinterpret traditional plastering techniques, resulting in ethereally beautiful textures on our walls. Crafted from Italian plaster, each sculptural piece is hand-made using an eight-inch trowel – founder Tanya Vacarda has perfected the art of layering and pressing pigmented plaster to achieve distinctively textured finishes with memserising colour effects, as in the gloriously gilded Autumn Blossom mural. £890 (vacardadesign.com)

How important is character? It’s everything for me and I feel sad for the old houses that’ve been modernised with PVC glazing. Our house was covered in pebbledash when we bought it and we were euphoric when we finally got it off. The bricks were cleaned and re-rendered and so many people comment on how good it looks from the street now. We were lucky with the original fireplace in the living room and we sourced a refurbished antique replacement for our bedroom. When we bought it, the guy who sold it said “you’ll only ever light this once,” and he was spot on! But it looks nice in the bedroom so I’m glad we did it, even if we never light it again. Describe your interiors style I love colour and making a statement with a bold wall and colour popping accessories. I don’t think about things matching, rather blending in to tell a whole story. I like there to be little areas of interest throughout the house – I’m not a fan of one colour scheme for a whole home. It should flow but that doesn’t necessarily mean each room should feel the same. The kitchen is a place of energy and conversation, the lounge a place for chilling, and the bedroom should be about making you feel good for the day ahead. So many people talk about making it chilled for sleep but I think it’s so important to consider the space you wake up in, or get ready for a night out. You need to feel energised and fun

here – it doesn’t matter how it looks when you crash out in the evening! What’s your take on maximalism? I’ve always been a maximalist – I guess I just love stuff! It’s part of the reason I started W.A.Green. I couldn’t find a store selling enough of the things I liked and got bored of all the big stores selling the same products and the smaller ones focusing on a Scandi vibe. It just isn’t me. I’m loving that everyone’s embracing it now and people are feeling empowered to live how they please, rather than conform to one school of thinking. Maximalism isn’t a trend, it’s a way of life. Which interiors brands are your favourites? I’m lucky to stock one of my design heroes, Jonathan Adler – everything he does is on the right side of wrong and I just love him for it. Seletti is also fun and Pulpo work with today’s most exciting designers. For furniture, you can’t go

wrong with Ligne Roset. We bought our sofa from there over 15 years ago and it’s just starting to look like it could tell a few stories! I really like to work with independent designers in the store, as I like the things I surround myself with to have heritage or a story. At home it’s all about a high-low mix of vintage with future classics, so I often visit markets and vintage furniture stores for lighting and one-off finds. I appreciate the revered classic pieces, but I’m not so into owning them, as so many people have them and it makes things feel too safe and cookie-cutter like. What’s next for W.A.Green? We’re always looking forward and every day brings something new. We’re keen to expand, make more of our own products and to develop the team. We’ve recently refurbished the store to allow us a much larger stock room for online capacity, so we’re looking forward to stress testing it as we continue to grow. wagreen.co.uk

Claire Atherton Schools Editor
Eaton Square Prep in numbers
If, like me, you were at school in the 70s and 80s, a “character education” was unlikely to have been high on your school’s list of priorities. Thankfully, we now live in more educationally enlightened times. At Fabric, we increasingly hear schools talk about creating well-rounded individuals, and most have accepted that focusing on character isn’t just “fluff”. In fact, a University of Birmingham research report concluded that “children and adults live and learn better with good moral character”. (The same university even offers a Master’s degree in the subject.) Eaton Square Schools embody this more enlightened approach. Not only do they believe that every child has the potential to excel, but they’ve also embedded a character education into everything they do. The result is a family of schools where children develop the confidence to try new things from the security of a supportive environment. Let’s hope other schools go down the same track, and produce children who are morally and intellectually equipped for the future.

THOUGHT PIECE
Character study Gone are the days when children learn by rote and exam results were the only measure worth mentioning. In today’s schools, PSHE (personal, social, health and economic education) can be as important as core subjects like maths and English. And senior schools now look for well-rounded individuals, not just academic aces. It’s a shift that Trish Watt, head of Eaton Square
Belgravia, a nursery, preprep and prep, approves of. “Of course, you have to get the academic side right for children to achieve their potential,” she says. “But they can only do so if they’re self-assured and happy. A character education will give them that advantage.” For Trish, a character education means teaching children virtues like honesty, compassion and a sense of
civic duty. It also means giving them the confidence and resilience to try new things and solve any problems they meet along the way. “We don’t know what the future holds for today’s sevenyear-olds, but we do know they’ll have far more jobs than we’ve had,” she says. “I think this uncertainty, as well as a growing focus on child mental health, is why character education has taken off.”

Eaton Square Schools What attracted you to the school? The atmosphere, the wonderful children and parents, the fantastically warm staff team and the fact that it’s fully co-educational. How would you sum it up in a sentence? An academically stimulating, artistically inspiring, sportingly excellent and positively characterforming school that believes every single child has the capacity to excel. What makes it different? The successes each year that the school has in academic, musical, sporting and artistic fields, which we acknowledge in a modest and respectful manner. We firmly believe in the old-fashioned but timeless values of respect, politeness, kindness, tolerance, patience, hard work and dedication – qualities that are in danger of being lost in our increasingly busy world.
New school year, new building
Eaton Square School is well placed to offer this kind of education. Its location on a garden square in the heart of London makes it easy to grab opportunities for outdoor and offsite learning. And if the weather’s bad, the school’s new building on Eccleston Square (for reception to year
70

4 pupils) has state-of-the-art facilities. Trish also hopes it’ll be home to a “character tree”, which displays the moral and intellectual virtues the school espouses. “It’ll show the whole school that we really value a character education, and engrain it in everything we do.” While she’s excited about the new facilities, Trish believes that buildings don’t make a school – people do. It’s why she’d like to encourage more parental involvement. “It’s true that parents are the biggest influence in a child’s life, but we see it very much as a team effort,” she says. “It brings to
mind the poem, Unity, which is about two sculptors working together to mould a child. “We hope to build on that connection this year by offering things like art classes for parents. The parents will feel part of our school while showing the children that you can learn all through life.” 3 ways to build your child’s character as well as their brain 1. Praise them for who they are not just what they achieve. 2. Be a good role model: show compassion, give back to society and be flexible to new ideas in and outside of the home. 3. Stimulate intellectual curiosity in your child through learning experiences and travel rather than tutors. This really is the best education.
How would you describe the atmosphere? Incredible. To quote just some of the leavers this year, “It’s my second home. I’ll never forget it”; “Eaton Square will stay in my heart forever”; “I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for Eaton Square.” How do you balance your extra-curricular activities with the academic side? The school’s extra-curricular activities are essential to the pupils and their overall development. We have close to 100 after and before school clubs throughout the year. There’s constant discussion about balance with the academic side of the curriculum, together with the artistic. All aspects are vital for individual growth. Kensington & Holland Park
Part of one of only four boroughs afforded “royal” status in London, Kensington and Holland Park offer all the benefits of luxury living set alongside grand historical buildings and Michelin-starred restaurants, but with the charm of a village community style of living. For outdoor space, this affluent enclave of west London boasts a scattering of hidden neighbourhood garden squares and is, of course, home to the wonderful Holland Park. Spanning 54 acres, this gorgeous green space is famous for its strutting peacocks and is home to an opera house, tennis courts and a Japanese garden. Moreover, the area is brimming with everything from world-class shopping to royal residences. It is one of London’s most desirable residential areas for couples, professionals and families alike – and it’s not hard to see why
Did you know? Holland Park itself was originally the private deer park of a Jacobean country house: Sir Walter Cope commissioned Holland House to be built in 1605. By the beginning of the last century, the grounds had spread to become bigger even than those of nearby Buckingham Palace. It was in these gardens that the first successful dahlia flower was ever cultivated in the UK. After the house was firebombed in the Blitz, the park was handed over to the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and its many acres were made public. The famous dahlias are still grown in the park today, making it a favourite spot for botanists and horticulturalists.

Bective Leslie Marsh “Whether you’re looking for quiet leafy streets, great transport links, excellent access to some of London’s best shops (see Westfield White City), or the beautiful acres of green open space in Holland Park itself, there’s a fabulous range of facilities for both local families and young global professionals. The Holland Park area has it all.”

Benham & Reeves “The rentals market in Kensington is very positive at the moment, with demand growing, particularly for apartments priced between £650 and £700 per week. Rental requests are mostly for smaller units and stock is very limited. Right now, one-bed apartments are in high demand.”

Aside from Holland Park itself, with its colourful peacocks and newly renovated kids’ playground, one of my favourite things about our local area is the fact that there are so many fabulous restaurants and bars. We always loved Julie’s in the past because they did a mean Sunday lunch for all the family, so it’s exciting that it is finally reopening after a five-year closure. I was particularly pleased to hear about the new Champagne bar there! Another favourite is Casa Cruz, an
intimate South American restaurant on Clarendon Road; the food and cocktails are fabulous. Six Portland Road is great, too. It’s owned by a friend of mine and is the perfect spot for a light lunch. And my favourite pub ever is the Ladbroke Arms – the food is incredible and very British! For food at home, we’re lucky to live near C. Lidgate, which has to be the best butcher in London (don’t miss their delicious takeaway pies if you’ve no time for cooking!). The Cowshed in Clarendon Cross is fantastic for all things beauty. As well as stocking some lovely products, they offer amazing holistic treatments. The Cross is one of my favourite boutique shops in London. It is super stylish and is always stocked with gorgeous things – it’s a great place to shop for kids’ pressies, too. For everything else, Portobello Road is only a hop, skip and a jump away and full of shops and cafés (not forgetting the weekend market which is an absolute must). And, love it or hate it, with Westfield around the corner we’re wanting for nothing. rockthejumpsuit.com

This peaceful and verdant spot in the centre of Holland Park gets the local hero stamp from Richard Broer of Hamptons International. But to the estate agent, it’s the people dedicated to maintaining the beautiful garden that are the real heroes: “They are my local champions,” he says: “Kyoto Garden is Holland Park’s best kept secret – a slice of Japanese Zen in the urban hubbub of London. I often retreat there for five minutes to reflect on work and life. It’s well worth a visit.” Don’t miss the resident peacocks – if you’re lucky you’ll be rewarded with a colourful display. Healthy eating is a top priority for Kensington’s discerning dwellers, and with Whole Foods so prominent on High Street Ken, there’s no excuse not to get the full five-a-day. “The store is focused on promoting healthy choices, and even offers a range of in-store events,” says Toby Simmonds from Dexters. “They stock a fantastic range of organic and wholesome fruit, vegetables, bread and meat, and they cater to all kinds of dietary requirements. The store also offers natural beauty and health products, and many locals are pleased to have access to these organic choices in their neighbourhood.” 63-97 Kensington High Street, W8 (020 7368 4500; wholefoodsmarket.co.uk)

A real one-off.” Why not pull up a chair and watch the world go by whilst sipping (according to true locals) the best coffee in Kensington? THOUGHT PIECE
How would you sum up the school in a sentence? A place of fun, purpose and success, providing an excellent education, challenging the mind and inspiring the imagination.
Pupil power If you want a lesson in how to learn, look no further than toddlers, says Alison Melrose, head of Prince’s Gardens Preparatory School, which opens in Kensington in September 2020. “Toddlers can become sudden experts in dinosaurs, able to identify, name and tell you all about every type,” she says. “They can do this because they have a personal desire to learn, which as teachers and parents, we need to cultivate.” This desire to learn, along with the ability to reflect and extend learning, is at the heart of “pupil agency”. A personalised approach, it sees children learn through activities that are meaningful to them and driven by their own interests. “Giving children a choice in how they learn helps them build the confidence and competence to be lifelong learners,” says Alison. “They also develop the transferable skills they’ll need for the future: flexibility, tenacity, creativity, communication and collaboration.” Pupil agency is well supported in the state sector through self-organised learning environments (SOLE). It’s also an integral part of the curriculum for the International Baccalaureate. But recognising which schools do it well can be tricky. “It must be a wholeschool approach,” says Alison. “Schools may have specific spaces to support personalised learning (we’ll have a maker space and digitally connected classrooms, for example). But that doesn’t mean they’ve considered what pupil agency looks like at every age stage.” If you’re interested in knowing how well a school does this, Alison suggests asking:
What makes it different? We’re a family-run school that concentrates on knowing each child and understanding what’s important to every family. The philosophy is borne out in our excellent results and in the open, thoughtful and happy children.
How do you cater for different learning styles? What opportunities are there for independent learning? How do you provide for children to choose how they learn? Is digital technology discreet or incorporated? What’s your whole school approach to learning? Parents can also support the approach with their children, adds Alison. “Ask open-ended questions about topics they’re interested in – and ask them to ask you questions,” she advises. “Have a range of easily accessible materials at home (paper, pens, empty pots, Lego) so they can choose how they express themselves. And support them to use technology to present what they’ve learnt after a day trip. You’ll be delighted with the results.” princesgardensprep.co.uk

What’s the atmosphere like? Hawkesdown is a safe place that radiates kindness and consideration, where a child can start their school life happily and make early friends with confidence. What about your personal educational ethos? I want any child who comes through our doors to be assured, confident and adept at speaking up on matters that affect them and others. I also want them to maximise their intellectual capacities and skills so they can make a meaningful contribution to society. How do you look after the wellbeing of your pupils? We’re now entering the third year of a “raising resilience” programme to help pupils grow in confidence and bounce back after setbacks. As part of this, we’re making sure we meet our high academic standards sustainably while giving the children learning tools for life. We also assist pupils in helping others through charitable endeavours; we’ve recently partnered with a school in eastern Nepal. SETTING EXPECTATIONS AS ‘BACK TO SCHOOL’ EXCITEMENT HAS BEEN OVERTAKEN BY THE HALF TERM COUNTDOWN, IT IS EASY FOR STUDENTS TO BECOME DISENGAGED; SCHOOLS MUST ENSURE THAT ENERGY AND EXPECTATION REMAIN AT THE HEART OF PRACTICE, WARNS ONE NORTH LONDON HEADTEACHER
country’s best mathematicians, celebrating top grades in additional maths – a GCSE qualification designed to stretch particularly high achieving mathematicians – year on year) and are also challenged to cook a great meal or complete their Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. “There is a difference in students being taught to the test in the expectation that they will get the highest grades – some children do not respond well to this kind of pressure – and setting high expectations reinforced by meaningful support and the nurturing of intellectual curiosity and a life-long love of a subject,” Brendan concludes. Pupils’ individual learning needs are priority at North Bridge House and in setting high expectations of both staff and students, Brendan is committed to maintaining a great fun and successful place to come to work and learn in his leaderships of both senior schools. fter celebrating top GCSE and A Level results this summer, high-achieving independent school group, North Bridge House is set to continue to build on its success under the leadership of one collegiate senior school headteacher. Extending his role as Head of North Bridge House Senior Hampstead across the school’s senior and sixth form campus in Canonbury too, Brendan Pavey says that by setting the expectations very high, but supporting rather than pressurising pupils, excellent academic outcomes will follow. With NBH Senior Hampstead achieving record GCSE results for the second successive year since Brendan’s start in 2017, and NBH Senior Canonbury celebrating its best ever A Level results this year, the school’s focus on understanding teens as both adolescents and unique, individual learners has evidently created a successful learning environment for its diverse student community. NBH is not academically selective like many of its competitors – it is mixed ability. The school prides itself on developing a broader range of pupil abilities than schools that set a very high academic bar for entry.
The school has celebrated outstanding success in subjects ranging from physics and geography to French and art this year, and from students gaining straight 9 grades at GCSE to an impressive 32 per cent of A*/A grades at A Level, Brendan maintains that “it is important to consider where a pupil’s abilities lie. An eight-year-old child who may be amazing at maths and English can also be brilliant at the piano, have a passion for history and progress to the top of the class over the next 10 years. Conversely, a pupil who has made wonderful progress in primary school may find the challenges of senior school very difficult and may need to develop confidence in other areas to succeed beyond the school gates.” North Bridge House purposefully identifies students’ strengths and challenges them with further opportunity to excel in these areas, consequently exceeding even their own expectations. “We build our pupils’ confidence in areas in which they are strong – positively impacting on their overall studies – and support them when they need more time to make progress,” says NBH Senior School Head, Brendan. Those who are academically strong are pushed to achieve great things in, for example, maths (and the school boasts some of the

BUILD
Building the dream From new builds and extensions to historical renovations, offering support at every step of the way, Octagon’s Bespoke division are skilled at helping clients to create their dream home
With an unrivalled reputation across London and the Home Counties for building homes of the highest quality, Octagon Bespoke has pioneered the concept of luxury housebuilding – offering the ultimate design and build services to each and every client. Octagon’s director, John Pope explains; “The day to day of Octagon Bespoke is really varied, we could be designing a beautiful eight bedroom family home in Weybridge, renovating a Victorian townhouse in Mayfair, or extending a penthouse apartment on the banks of the Thames. Every client and every home is different, and this is why we call it Bespoke. Offering clients support from the very first steps of finding a plot of land and obtaining local planning permissions – sometimes demolishing their current home and replacing it with a brand new property – through to design and specification, the Bespoke division offers a turn-key service that works closely with the client to achieve their dream home. John continues; “Our reputation within London and the Home Counties is new build, because that’s what the majority of our speculative homes have been in the past. But we’ve recently completed a historical renovation on a Grade II* listed building in the heart of Wimbledon Village alongside English Heritage – we can do it all.”
The skilled team are also able to facilitate a major extension, with some recent commissions from repeat clients, now looking at a complete remodel or extension of their Octagon home. One example has recently been undertaken on the Wentworth estate, Virginia Water, with the client wanting to extend their already sizable 9,000 sq ft home by a third – creating more space for entertaining guests, including a bar, cinema room and two formal drawing rooms. John explains; “A Bespoke home should always be a ‘dream home’ – it is a highly personal process, and we work very closely with clients from day one, so it’s a real pleasure when clients return to us for a remodel, renovation or extension, or recommend us to their friends and family. “We once had a Bespoke client return to build an Octagon home for his parents, just around the corner from his own! He came equipped with a suitcase full of samples, cuttings and ideas based on his parents hobbies and tastes, and it resulted in one of the most artistically fascinating finished projects we’ve ever worked on.”
At Octagon, we have 40 years experience and an unrivalled reputation for building spectacular, one-of-a kind homes to the highest standard of luxury. Our discreet bespoke service takes clients on a journey from planning stages through to handing over the keys, with our in-house experts on hand every step of the way. Octagon Bespoke can help you transform your vision into something truly unique. Bespoke projects start from £1m.

ASK THE AGENT
Q: What are the current tricks and treats of the London property market? Cobi Aboody Goldschmidt & Howland “If buyer and vendor are receiving honest advice from their agent, and factual information that can be supported by a true understanding of the market, the whole process can be a treat. Some agents provide
inflated valuations, offering low fees and therefore tricking vendors by mismanaging their expectations. When property is sensibly priced, there is good demand from buyers who now feel they can take
advantage of excellent mortgage rates and competitive pricing. We have had a number of recent sales agreed with competitive interest and best bid processes in place to secure the purchases.”
Years in the business? 32. I love London for its… wonderful architecture. And because it allows me to work with a huge variety of people of all nationalities. My first property was… a two-bed garden flat in Northwood, Middlesex. It had three toilets and was a great party flat! If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… either a Formula 1 driver or a professional footballer.
A swift move?
Best sale? I recently sold a beautiful cottage in the Vale of Health with a wonderful garden. Both parties were lovely to deal with, and the sale exchanged and completed extremely quickly. It was the perfect sale.

Taylor Swift was recently ridiculed for her lyrics to new track London Boy, in which she describes a rather geographically challenging day out in our fair city. She takes in Soho, Shoreditch, Hampstead Heath, Brixton, Camden, Hackney and “Louis V up on Bond Street” – imagine the cab fare! But one neighbourhood she alludes to – for which we’re fully onboard for this very expensive taxi ride – is Highgate (“Took me back to Highgate, met all of his best mates”). If the American megastar were to settle in her beloved London, we think she could do a lot worse than this historic hot spot on the hill. So what could she get for her dollars here? Savills are currently offering a smart four-bed semi detached home on Hornsey Lane Gardens with a guide price of £1.675 million; Goldschmidt & Howland have a suitably grand eight-bed red brick mansion on Grange Road, on the market at £9 million; while Chestertons have a unique one-bed apartment on Hampstead Lane, complete with wood beams and a vaulted ceiling, for sale at £625,000.

Favourite place to grab a coffee? The Coffee Cup, Hampstead High Street. Where do you go for head space in the city? Hampstead Heath, overlooking the ponds. It can’t be beaten if you want total tranquility, and it’s only 20 minutes away from the West End. What’s your hidden talent? The ability to turn what looks like a good golf swing into an absolute shambles of a shot! Period property or newbuild? Period. I love Queen Anne, Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian architecture – but I do also like ultra-modern! Take one person, dead, alive or fictional, out in London – who and where? Bobby Moore for a tour of Wembley to relive the World Cup Final. Aliens attack! Which London landmark would you save? St. Paul’s Cathedral. Creature comfort? My UGG slippers!
